Marriage Matters in Contemporary African American Culture

In VEIL AND VOW, Aneeka Ayanna Henderson critically examines the representation of Black women and their relationships in popular fiction, music, and movies in the 1990s while critiquing the devastating impact economic policy and federal legislation had on black inequality. Among those she reviews are the main characters in novels by Terry McMillan and Sista Souljah, and the lyrics of songs by Anita Baker and Public Enemy. Aneeka Ayanna Henderson is assistant professor of sexuality, women's, and gender studies at Amherst College.
