- 0:01Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I'm your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:05And with me today is singer songwriter, Nathan Wade.
- 0:07Nathan, welcome to the show, brother.
- 0:09Hey.
- 0:09Thanks for having me, Bubba.
- 0:10Appreciate it.
- 0:11Well, man, it's a pleasure.
- 0:12We've already been talking a little bit off camera, and no.
- 0:15We gotta hit record already, man.
- 0:18For our listeners who don't know who you are, why don't you share a little bit about, you
- 0:22know, who you are and your backstory, we'll get into what you're up to now.
- 0:26Well, that's probably most of your listeners.
- 0:28There's a there's a running joke back in the day when I when we playing were with the band
- 0:31and that, you know, my ex wife actually made these shirts that said, who the f is Nathan
- 0:36Wade?
- 0:37So that was that was pretty funny, but, you know, I'm I'm just a guy who who loves to write
- 0:44songs.
- 0:45And for a while there, I was writing songs to send to Nashville, try to get other people to
- 0:49record them, but I wanted to sing them myself.
- 0:51So I finally got a band together.
- 0:54We did really well, and they didn't wanna sing more of the original music.
- 0:58So it's really tough out here in Nebraska.
- 1:00By the way, we got a game tonight here in Nebraska.
- 1:04It's actually down at Arrowhead, but, go big red.
- 1:06So
- 1:06we I live in Southeastern South Dakota, so I'm friends with a lot of Husker fans.
- 1:13Yep.
- 1:13They're everywhere.
- 1:15I'm hoping for a good year.
- 1:17But music wise, man, I just I just love it and telling stories.
- 1:23For me, it used to be more about me.
- 1:25And this time around, it's just gonna be more about the music and getting it out there and
- 1:30getting people to to feel what I feel when I sing it.
- 1:34And that's what it's all about.
- 1:36You you shared a little bit of your story of working with with guys that only wanted to play
- 1:40covers, and they're, you know, kinda letting their fears permeate into the band about, well,
- 1:45you know, if we're not a cover band, then we maybe we're not making the money, and maybe
- 1:49people aren't coming out to see us for these reasons or that.
- 1:52But you're never gonna make it in this business if you can't establish yourself as an artist,
- 1:58and you're never gonna make any money unless you have your original music and you're you're
- 2:03continuing to push that side of it.
- 2:05And even if you have the greatest songs in the world, you're probably never gonna crack
- 2:09Nashville unless you got a quarter million dollars in your pocket.
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:12Nashville.
- 2:13I gave up on Nashville years ago.
- 2:14It's not really my my scene.
- 2:16I'm, I'm still a little more traditional, and I actually I did find a band here last year, and
- 2:22they were looking at having me on there.
- 2:23And, then they listened to my music and said I sounded too traditional.
- 2:27I said, thank you.
- 2:30Goodbye.
- 2:30I appreciate that.
- 2:32Well and in this day, and we talk about it a lot on the show that, you know, this is the age
- 2:37of the independent artist.
- 2:39And the the age of the big break and the, you know, record deal and, like, if you want a
- 2:45record deal in this day, you are insane.
- 2:49You because now they're all three sixty deals.
- 2:51Right?
- 2:52They want some of everything that you do Yeah.
- 2:54Because nobody's paying for music specifically.
- 2:57Right?
- 2:58So the only way to really do it and to to feel good about it, you know, for me and for guys
- 3:04like me and you, I think I could speak for both of us here, is to do it independently, to treat
- 3:09your band like a business from the get go, to continue to build yourself as an artist and as
- 3:15an original artist, first and foremost.
- 3:18That doesn't mean that you can't play covers, but you need to be the artist and not just a
- 3:24band that plays other people's music.
- 3:26I I just think that there is less and less room for people like that because you have bands
- 3:32that are at the top.
- 3:33You know, some of these tribute acts are already out there doing it, and they're
- 3:36probably way better than you and your buddies.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:38Oh, yeah.
- 3:39And and that's the thing out here in Nebraska.
- 3:41It's it's hard.
- 3:41Like I said, I've I've I put something out at least once a year trying to look for band
- 3:47members, but, nobody wants to take on an original project.
- 3:50And I'm like, man, I've sold thousands of CDs of my music and and those kind of things.
- 3:55And I think I got some really good songs that touch people's lives.
- 3:58And, man, if I had a band behind me, I think it'd be great.
- 4:00But, I gotta say since I got back into this a few months ago, just me and my guitar and my
- 4:05songs, and I haven't had to play a single cover song.
- 4:08So That's beautiful.
- 4:10It's been awesome.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:12That's beautiful.
- 4:16Shifting.
- 4:17And, thankfully for us that, I think there's a hunger for original music.
- 4:23I think there's a hunger for connection with artists.
- 4:26You don't need a million followers and a million fans anymore.
- 4:29You know?
- 4:30The the thousand true fans method, I think, is pretty well spoken at this point.
- 4:34If you've got a thousand people out there in the world that love you and love your art and
- 4:38are willing to support that art, you can make a living in this.
- 4:43Now we all have different lifestyles that we may be, you know, trying to maintain.
- 4:47Someone who's 22 and single and, you know, can sleep in their car on tour and do all those
- 4:54things is obviously in a lot better situation than someone who has, you know, a wife and
- 4:59family at home, a house to maintain, and all those things.
- 5:01So, yes, there are limitations to it still, but there's plenty of money to be made, especially
- 5:07in the Midwest, in just performing.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13Like I said, I've been doing really well.
- 5:15I've got one bar I wanted to shout out here in Lincoln, which is really shocked me, actually.
- 5:20I know some people from there have been to that bar, but it definitely does not have a country
- 5:25vibe whatsoever.
- 5:27And but one of the bartenders decided to talk to the owner and try to get me in there because
- 5:32they didn't have a lot of live music, and I've been asked back three times already.
- 5:37It's called One More Bar here in Lincoln.
- 5:39And just a little strip mall, just a little neighborhood bar, and it's just super cool to
- 5:44get in there.
- 5:45And we've got places like tanks down in the rail yard here in Lincoln that they have a
- 5:49singer songwriter and I have been able to do.
- 5:51Thanks to Todd and Drew over there.
- 5:54The dog house
- 5:55park.
- 5:56Hold on, Nathan.
- 5:58You're alright.
- 6:01Well, I've been trying to crack that little scene down there, man.
- 6:04I mean, obviously, you have you know, Nebraska is down there, a a huge market of young people.
- 6:11And I think a lot of them Midwestern kids, right, that grew up going to street dances and
- 6:17things like that.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:19And I think there is a hunger, especially in this Midwest and in that younger community, for
- 6:25live music.
- 6:26And unfortunately for them, a lot of their peers don't play instruments and don't do those
- 6:32things because the culture kind of shifted and went away from traditional music, not just in
- 6:38there, but the traditional way of making music as well.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:41Anything, well, the AI thing is really kinda bothering me at this point, but, you know,
- 6:46that's just that's a whole another egg you're gonna crack.
- 6:49But, yeah, it's just being original for me.
- 6:52It's always been that way.
- 6:53And and the reason I I got back into this, you know, I basically took a ten year hiatus.
- 6:58My last studio album was, 02/2015.
- 7:02And, you know, I listened to the voices that said, you're you're not gonna be able to do it
- 7:06without doing cover music.
- 7:08You know, people aren't just gonna listen to a guy with a guitar telling stories they've never
- 7:12heard, and and I listened to that.
- 7:14And then my grandson came around, and he got dropped off on our doorstep.
- 7:21And two years later, we adopted him.
- 7:24And so he's he's about eight and a half now, and he's doing he's a level two brown belt in
- 7:32Taekwondo.
- 7:33He has also just started competitive gymnastics, and the kid is just unreal.
- 7:39But when he got dropped off right before his second birthday, he was he knew maybe two
- 7:43words, and we were able to adopt him.
- 7:47And I kinda got out of it and used it as a crutch and as an excuse that I had to raise
- 7:53him.
- 7:54So, you know, the music didn't matter.
- 7:55I had to do this.
- 7:56And this past year, man, I had this job that was just dragging me down.
- 8:00And I looked at him and I thought, I'm pushing him to do his best and and chase things and
- 8:06work hard.
- 8:07And I said that's but I'm not doing that.
- 8:10I said, I I have I have music and I gave it up and why?
- 8:13So I quit that job and I started booking shows again.
- 8:19And I was able to when we first got him, I had a show booked right after that and we're like,
- 8:25we'll just bring him with us and he's two years old sitting on a tailgate listening to me sing
- 8:29and he hasn't seen me sing live since.
- 8:32And just this year, I booked a show out at Country Drive.
- 8:36That's another good one in in Ashland.
- 8:38It's right off a golf course.
- 8:40I got some friends in Ashland.
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:42They had this it's a beautiful venue, man.
- 8:44It's right on the golf course, but they got this huge building, this great stage.
- 8:49And I was honored to go out there and actually open for one of the number one Johnny Cash
- 8:54tribute bands.
- 8:56So that was super cool.
- 8:57But after I decided to do the music, I finally came up with the song that told the story about
- 9:02how we got Jax.
- 9:04And I was able to get him on stage and sing it, and it was just quite a quite a moment for for
- 9:10me and for him and just kinda full circle.
- 9:14And, man, it was awesome.
- 9:16So I'm I'm really doing a lot of this for his benefit.
- 9:19Now the money is gonna have to keep coming or else, know, I got my transmission going out in
- 9:25my car and, you know, all that stuff that traveling musicians have and, you know, split
- 9:30time.
- 9:31I've got, you know, we've got split custody.
- 9:34So it's, it's kind of a grind, you know, when I have them every other weekend.
- 9:38So trying to book shows and stuff like that has been you know, it's tough, but this is what I
- 9:44wanna do.
- 9:44And there's no place I feel better than that three square feet on a stage to be able to sing
- 9:49my songs.
- 9:50That's that's just what it's about for me, and I want him to see that.
- 9:54So
- 9:55That's beautiful, man.
- 9:56Shout out to Jax.
- 9:57He sounds like an impressive young man.
- 9:59He is.
- 10:01That's our future.
- 10:03Right?
- 10:03And exactly what you have done and taken upon yourself is that if we don't live in as example
- 10:08to these young people, and and you can talk about it and they find it on the Internet, oh,
- 10:13chase your dreams, and you can be anything you want, and you can do these.
- 10:17But when you look to your elders and you see them not doing that, it it it kills the belief
- 10:24in that.
- 10:25Right?
- 10:26And similar story, Nathan.
- 10:28I was working in a factory, you know, eighteen months ago, welding, hating my life.
- 10:33It wasn't who I was put here to be.
- 10:36I had pretty much, you know, abandoned music totally.
- 10:39I was playing on some weekends and things like that, but it just wasn't it.
- 10:43I've been very grateful to not just have music, but now podcasting as well.
- 10:47But but that's because I can't evolve into this.
- 10:50And in eighteen months, we've built ourselves up to being an award winning podcast network.
- 10:55We're able to empower other creatives and to bring them onto our network, other creatives
- 10:59like yourself that are being guests, that are raising the the platform that they have built
- 11:04and doing this all together.
- 11:05So I'm very grateful, but it would have never happened if I kept giving someone else fifty
- 11:10hours a week of my time.
- 11:12Right.
- 11:13And does it take adjustments of lifestyle?
- 11:15Does it take sacrifices?
- 11:16Yes.
- 11:17Of course.
- 11:18But what was I sacrificing to go to that job every single day?
- 11:22It all your time, man.
- 11:23Your time and and your your soul.
- 11:26Right.
- 11:26Pieces pieces of what's inside of you or dying.
- 11:29Who you are.
- 11:30It's you know?
- 11:31When when it's just I know you feel it too, but when you're talking about your music and and
- 11:37what you create, it's just it's a whole different thing, man.
- 11:42You can't people people outside of it, it's hard for them to feel I mean, I got stuff going
- 11:48all over my head all the time, but when when you can condense it and put it in a three
- 11:54minute song that tells a story of someone's whole life, and, I mean, that's just that's
- 12:00magic, man.
- 12:02It's awesome.
- 12:02Truly is.
- 12:03Truly is.
- 12:05Nathan, love the backstory, man.
- 12:07Can't wait to meet you and down there.
- 12:09What are you working on now?
- 12:10You got another album that's coming out soon or one you just released?
- 12:14Well, like I said, I've been out of the game for ten years.
- 12:17I don't think anybody even buys CDs anymore.
- 12:20I'd sure love to put one of those out, but, I mean, I've got so much music that's not
- 12:24recorded.
- 12:26And I think some of my best songs are not on an album anywhere, but I do have you know, you can
- 12:30go to iTunes or any of that stuff.
- 12:31There's three albums, I think, on there.
- 12:34But, yeah, right now, I'm just trying to build the network back up to where I can consistently
- 12:40get shows, get out, sing my music.
- 12:44I'm writing again, which is awesome.
- 12:47Been writing some new songs.
- 12:49One of my favorites right now is, god and gasoline.
- 12:53That's a pretty cool song.
- 12:54A little revved up.
- 12:55Get god in there anytime I can.
- 12:57So, yeah, if I can get this thing built up, I'd love to put some more music out.
- 13:04Selling T shirts again.
- 13:06My ten year anniversary of the what I love and what I do album, so I put that T shirt out
- 13:10again.
- 13:10We're doing that.
- 13:11So just anything I can do to get the music out there.
- 13:15And, like I said, my first album was called My Own Name, and it was also my first tattoo.
- 13:21Got a lot of those since.
- 13:22But now it's more about just getting my songs out there.
- 13:26It's not even really about me.
- 13:28It's about other people appreciating it, you know, like I do.
- 13:34Amazing, man.
- 13:35Well, I know you got a sleepy Frenchie at your feet.
- 13:38I can hear
- 13:39Can you
- 13:39hear him?
- 13:40Oh, yeah.
- 13:40I just that puts a big smile on my face, man.
- 13:43I'm such a such a big dog person.
- 13:46I like cats too, but a a squishy faced dog will always have my heart.
- 13:50Nathan Wade, why don't you tell everybody where they can find you online once for me, and,
- 13:56yeah, I'll let you get out of here.
- 13:58Sure.
- 13:59Basically, I'm just rolling off Facebook right now.
- 14:02So it's just Nathan Wade country.
- 14:04You can look me up, give that a like, be my friend.
- 14:08Again, you can find my music at Nathan Wade Country on YouTube, iTunes, CD Baby, all that
- 14:13stuff.
- 14:15I've heard Spotify is kinda going out the window.
- 14:17So I actually pulled up a couple of my songs on Spotify the other day, and it was playing the
- 14:21wrong song.
- 14:23I have a lot of my friends who are independent artists who were posting a lot about how they
- 14:27they took their albums down out of nowhere because they're saying that it it, they thought
- 14:32it might have been AI generated.
- 14:35And these are, like, real deal artists.
- 14:37Oh oh, like the pop music that's that we're hearing on the radio?
- 14:41The Yeah.
- 14:42Yeah.
- 14:42It's it's just terrible.
- 14:44I I can't I can't listen to the radio.
- 14:46Hey.
- 14:46You know what?
- 14:47You're you're on it, man.
- 14:48You you are on it.
- 14:49You're doing the right thing.
- 14:50I will tell you right now, people do buy CDs, but it's just different.
- 14:53They're not buying it to consume it.
- 14:55They're buying it because they know that supports an artist.
- 14:58I'm I'm gonna put I've been working on an album myself with songs that, haven't seen the light
- 15:02of day in in a decade or more.
- 15:04And, I'm thinking about just taking it straight to vinyl like some of my friends back here
- 15:09behind me have.
- 15:10And
- 15:11That is the new thing, man.
- 15:12We're back to records.
- 15:13Well, it's visceral.
- 15:15Right?
- 15:15And I think I think it matters, and and I think people understand it.
- 15:20I think they they realize that the sound quality is way better.
- 15:23I think we're all sick and tired of renting music Gener yeah.
- 15:26Generated.
- 15:26Spotify.
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:28Generated crap.
- 15:29You know?
- 15:29It's I don't know.
- 15:31For me, like, yeah, I'll sit in a bar.
- 15:32I'm not I'm not a guitarist.
- 15:33I say I'm a singer, songwriter, guitar ish.
- 15:37If I can get enough of the chords together just the right way to play my music, you know, it's
- 15:42like Harlan Howard.
- 15:43It's, you know, three chords and the truth.
- 15:46That's it.
- 15:47Well, Nathan Wade, thanks so much for sharing your story with us today, and thanks for being
- 15:52part of the scene.
- 15:53Absolutely, Bubba.
- 15:54Appreciate it, man.
