- 0:00Speaker 1: At a public auction, Boston Blackie outbids a mysterious man
- 0:04Speaker 1: in a green hat for a vase admired by Mary Wesley.
- 0:08Speaker 1: The rival demands the object, and after the messenger taking
- 0:12Speaker 1: it to Mary is fatally wounded, Blackie and Inspector Faraday
- 0:16Speaker 1: seek the reason an ordinary piece of pottery has attracted
- 0:19Speaker 1: such attention. Their inquiry moves from the auction room to
- 0:24Speaker 1: Blackie's apartment and Mary Wesley's residence. From the Richard Colmar
- 0:29Speaker 1: syndicated run, this is Boston Blackie, originally broadcast February 26, 1946,
- 0:34Speaker 1: episode 59, A Vase Leads to Murder. Here is the
- 0:36Speaker 1: original broadcast. ¶ ¶.
- 0:59Speaker 2: THE END What am I bid for this gorgeous piece
- 1:22Speaker 2: of hand-painted pottery from the effects of the late Nancy Kittredge?
- 1:25Speaker 3: $ 20.
- 1:26Speaker 4: The man in the green hat says $ 20.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Do I hear 25?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Let him hear 25, Blackie. You sure you want to marry?
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yes, I do.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I got 20. Do I hear 25? 25.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Do I hear 30?
- 1:33Speaker 3: 30.
- 1:40Speaker 4: The man in the green hat says 30.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Do I hear 35?
- 1:43Speaker 4: 35.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I heard it, and thank you, sir.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Do I hear 40?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Uh-oh, that man in the green.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Hat is coming over this way.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Do I hear 40?
- 1:50Speaker 2: For what? This is a public auction. Do I hear 40? 40.
- 1:54Speaker 2: The man in the green hat says 40. Do I
- 1:56Speaker 2: hear more?
- 1:57Speaker 4: You better not hear more, bud.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Do I hear any more?
- 2:00Speaker 2: I've got 40. 40.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Do I hear any more?
- 2:02Speaker 2: The man in the green hat has bid 40.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Do I hear 45?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Oh, you can only bid $ 50, huh? $ 60.
- 2:08Speaker 4: $ 60 is bid.
- 2:10Speaker 2: What does the man in the green hat say? The
- 2:12Speaker 2: man in the green hat doesn't say anything. And it's
- 2:16Speaker 2: $ 60 going once, going twice. Sold for $ 60. Congratulations, sir.
- 2:22Speaker 4: So you got the bays and congratulations, huh? Maybe condolences would.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Be a better word.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 2:35Speaker 5: And now, back to Dick Calmer as Boston Blackie. Enemy
- 2:39Speaker 5: to those who make him an enemy. Friend to those
- 2:42Speaker 5: who have no friend.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Hello? Blackie, this is Mary. I'm home now.
- 2:52Speaker 5: You can bring that vase over any time you want.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Well, I'm going to be busy for a couple of hours, Mary.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I'll send it over by messenger, huh? Oh, thank you, darling.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Okay.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Okay. I'll see you for dinner? Oh, yeah, I'd like.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I like.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Oh, that's probably the messenger for the phase now.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Tell him not to drop it.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I'll tell him what it costs, then he'll drop it
- 3:13Speaker 2: in fright. I'll call for you around 6.30, how's that? Well,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I'll be ready. Bye.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Bye.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Come in. Well, your messenger, sir. Oh, the man in
- 3:24Speaker 2: the green hat. Yeah. Sorry, there's no auction here today.
- 3:29Speaker 2: But there's something here that was bought at an auction today,
- 3:32Speaker 2: and I'd like to have it. Then why didn't you
- 3:34Speaker 2: outfit me for it? I didn't have the dough with me.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Too bad. Look, I'll give you the 60 bucks you
- 3:41Speaker 2: paid for it if you let me have it. Sorry,
- 3:43Speaker 2: but it isn't mine. I bought it for someone else.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Well, tomorrow I'll give you $ 500 for it.
- 3:49Speaker 2: No deal, pal.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Look, but I want that vase, and you're going to
- 3:53Speaker 4: give it to me.
- 3:54Speaker 2: You won't want what I'm going to give you. Now
- 3:57Speaker 2: get out of here.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Look, I can get.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Keep your hand out of your pocket, pal. The only
- 4:00Speaker 2: hand I like to see with a gun in it
- 4:01Speaker 2: is mine. Like this. Okay. You win. This time. And
- 4:08Speaker 2: there had better not be a next time or I'll
- 4:11Speaker 2: knock that green hat right off your head the hard way. Coming. Hey,
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm coming. Just a minute.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Oh! Yes, yes, but... Oh, you're hurt.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Now come in and sit down.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Here, here, take it easy.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I'll take the package.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I have it all right.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Now just sit down.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Let's see what's the matter with you.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Oh, you're bleeding, and then badly, too.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Please, please, take it easy.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Here, let me unbutton your collar. I'm all right.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I was driving here in my car, and.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Don't talk anymore.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I'll go get a doctor right away for you.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 4:57Speaker 2: But I don't think....
- 4:59Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 5:05Speaker 2: No, I don't think you do need a doctor now.
- 5:08Speaker 4: But I need Blackie.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And the police. So, what did he do, Miss Wesley?
- 5:22Speaker 4: Deliver this vase to you and then die right here
- 5:23Speaker 4: in your apartment?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yes, he did, Inspector Faraday. I was going to call
- 5:26Speaker 2: a doctor, but it was too late. I'm not blaming
- 5:28Speaker 2: you for this, Mary, but I wish you hadn't liked
- 5:30Speaker 2: that vase at the auction.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Well, what's the vase got to do with this, Blanky?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Everything, Faraday.
- 5:34Speaker 4: That funny-looking piece of clay on the table there?
- 5:37Speaker 2: Now, you don't know what you're talking about. Inspector, it
- 5:39Speaker 2: is not funny-looking. You're so right, Mary. It's beginning to
- 5:42Speaker 2: look rather gruesome to me. And what it means to
- 5:45Speaker 2: the man in the green hat, I don't know.
- 5:47Speaker 4: What man in what green hat?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I bought this vase at an auction this morning, Faraday.
- 5:52Speaker 2: A man in a green hat bit against me until
- 5:54Speaker 2: I went too high. About an hour ago, he came
- 5:56Speaker 2: to my apartment and practically pulled a gun on me
- 5:59Speaker 2: because I wouldn't sell it to him.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Are you trying to kid me?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Faraday, that guy had murder in his eyes when I
- 6:05Speaker 2: told him he couldn't have this vase for any price.
- 6:07Speaker 2: He must have had murder in him. He killed the
- 6:10Speaker 2: messenger boy. Yes, I'm pretty sure he did, Mary. Just
- 6:14Speaker 2: after he left, the messenger came to my door... Green
- 6:17Speaker 2: Hat must have seen him, followed him, taken a shot
- 6:20Speaker 2: at him. But the messenger managed to make it here
- 6:23Speaker 2: so Green Hat didn't get the vase.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Mike, do you mean to tell me a guy would
- 6:26Speaker 4: kill for that funny-looking piece of junk?
- 6:29Speaker 2: The looks of a piece of pottery may be only
- 6:31Speaker 2: clay deep, Faraday. Maybe it's a valuable vase. An antique.
- 6:36Speaker 2: One of those Ming Dynasty things worth thousands of dollars.
- 6:39Speaker 4: What's a Ming Dynasty thing?
- 6:42Speaker 2: Something that's old and valuable. And if I expect to
- 6:45Speaker 2: live to be old and valuable, I think I'd better
- 6:48Speaker 2: find out what the vase is worth. Oh! You're an
- 6:58Speaker 2: expert on pottery, Mr. Dandy. Could you tell by looking
- 7:01Speaker 2: at a vase how much it's worth? Well, not to
- 7:03Speaker 2: the dollar, Blackie, but I could say whether or not
- 7:06Speaker 2: it was valuable. Unwrap the vase, Faraday. Let Mr. Dandy
- 7:09Speaker 2: have a look at it.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Okay. Be careful, Inspector. That's mine, remember? Yeah, and you
- 7:14Speaker 4: can have it.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Miss Wesley.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Here, Blackie.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Thanks. How much did you pay for these, Blackie? Sixty
- 7:21Speaker 2: dollars at an auction. Sixty dollars? Don't tell me I
- 7:25Speaker 2: fell into a bargain, Mr.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Dandy. It must be worth plenty. But can I commit
- 7:28Speaker 4: murder for it?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Murder, Inspector?
- 7:31Speaker 1: I can't understand why this is a cheap factory-made vase.
- 7:34Speaker 4: There's even imperfection in the design.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I would say it was not worth more than two dollars.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Where are we going, Bracken?
- 7:51Speaker 2: Well, Mary, if this vase is worth only two dollars...
- 7:54Speaker 2: Then the man in the green hat isn't after the
- 7:56Speaker 2: vase itself. But what's inside it?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Well, what could be inside it?
- 8:00Speaker 2: A lot of things, Faraday. Baked right into the clay.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Well, we could break it and see. Oh, no, you don't.
- 8:06Speaker 4: That's my vase, and I like it the way it is.
- 8:08Speaker 4: In one piece.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Don't worry, Mary. We don't have to break it to
- 8:12Speaker 2: look inside it. That's why we're taking it to an
- 8:14Speaker 2: X-ray lab. We're going to find out what's inside this
- 8:17Speaker 2: vase that would make a man in a green hat
- 8:19Speaker 2: see red. Blackie, here's the X-ray picture of your vase. Oh, thanks, Doctor.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Come on, Faraday. You can have a look at it, too.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yeah, you bet I can. Let me look, Blackie.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Here, here, get in here. Thanks. Well, what do you see?
- 8:42Speaker 4: The... the outline of a vase.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yes, but nothing else.
- 8:49Speaker 2: This means there's nothing in it, Doctor? Not a thing, Blackie.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's just a plain vase made of plain clay.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Well, maybe this picture doesn't show what's really in it.
- 8:57Speaker 4: It shows there's nothing in it, Inspector, and pictures don't lie.
- 9:00Speaker 4: I say this one does. Let's break the vase. That's
- 9:03Speaker 4: the best way of seeing what's in it. Oh, no,
- 9:04Speaker 4: you don't, Inspector.
- 9:05Speaker 2: That's my vase, and I like it.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Well, I don't like it. It's the cause of a
- 9:09Speaker 4: man being killed, and I'm going to break it.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Faraday, don't be a nut, will you? Inspector, just give
- 9:13Speaker 2: me that vase. Give it to her, Faraday. Oh, all right.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Take it, Miss Wesley.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Oh, don't let go of it so fast.
- 9:21Speaker 4: It's heavy and I.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Oh!
- 9:23Speaker 4: I thought you didn't want it broken, Miss Wesley. Oh, golly,
- 9:26Speaker 4: I would drop it.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Oh, fine, General Mary. Let's look at the pieces and
- 9:30Speaker 2: see what's in them. Yes, look at the pieces, Blackie.
- 9:33Speaker 4: And prove to Inspector Faraday my picture didn't lie.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I think this will convince him, Doctor. Look at those pieces, Faraday.
- 9:40Speaker 2: There's none bigger than a dime. My beautiful vase. Your
- 9:43Speaker 2: beautiful vase was. Your beautiful vase, Miss Wesley, is a
- 9:48Speaker 2: beautiful mess. And this beautiful mess, Inspector, poses a beautiful question.
- 9:52Speaker 2: If there's nothing in this vase, why did the man
- 9:55Speaker 2: in the green hat kill that messenger? Here's 51 Sunset Parkway, Faraday.
- 10:10Speaker 2: This is where I stand.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I can read, Blackie. This is where you get out,
- 10:14Speaker 4: get off, and get going.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Now, just what was the meaning of that?
- 10:18Speaker 4: I mean, I think you're holding out on me. You
- 10:20Speaker 4: took something out of that vase. Something the guy in
- 10:22Speaker 4: the green hat wanted.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Faraday, there was nothing in it to take out.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what you say. Now, come on.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Tell me the truth.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Won't mean you've done anything wrong. After all, you bought
- 10:35Speaker 4: the vase. That gave you a right to whatever was
- 10:39Speaker 4: in it.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Well, thanks for that much, Faraday. But I'm telling you
- 10:42Speaker 2: the truth. There was nothing in that vase when I
- 10:45Speaker 2: bought it. There was nothing in it when I... Well,
- 10:47Speaker 2: when it broke. You saw that yourself.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Well, I'm taking the broken pieces to headquarters to have
- 10:52Speaker 4: them looked at.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Just the same. You're wasting your time, Faraday. With the
- 10:55Speaker 2: pieces of that vase and with me. Want to come
- 11:00Speaker 2: up to my apartment with me?
- 11:01Speaker 1: No.
- 11:02Speaker 4: I'm going back to headquarters and see how we're doing
- 11:04Speaker 4: on finding the guy in the green hat.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Close that car door, will you?
- 11:09Speaker 2: Oh, sure. There, Faraday, I've closed something for you. Now
- 11:14Speaker 2: see if you can close something for yourself. The case
- 11:17Speaker 2: of the man in the green hat. Find out about
- 11:20Speaker 2: the man in the green hat, it'll be a feather
- 11:22Speaker 2: in your cap. Ah, home sweet home.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Don't move, Blackie, unless you look good in life.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Well, so it's that green hat again with that man
- 11:43Speaker 2: under it again. Where's that vase? That vase? Oh, it's
- 11:47Speaker 2: all over. It's broken. You lie. I don't lie very well, mister.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Not at all, with a gun pointing at me. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: told you it's broken.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I could kill you for that.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yes, I suppose you could. You've already killed one person
- 11:57Speaker 2: to get that vase.
- 11:57Speaker 4: What if I did?
- 11:58Speaker 2: The vase is important to me. You killed that messenger boy?
- 12:01Speaker 5: Yes, and I'm going to kill you right now unless
- 12:03Speaker 5: you give me that vase.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Then tell me where it is. If you weren't so
- 12:06Speaker 2: intent on keeping your eyes on me, you'd see the
- 12:08Speaker 2: vase you're looking for over in the corner there.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Which corner?
- 12:11Speaker 2: Where? There, or rather here. How's your chin, pal? Oh, no,
- 12:16Speaker 2: I'll put that gun of yours in my pocket. You
- 12:19Speaker 2: can't be trusted with it. There. There's no vase in
- 12:23Speaker 2: the corner there. No? Well, there isn't a brain in
- 12:25Speaker 2: your head, either. Oh, you'd know the trick I just
- 12:28Speaker 2: pulled on you is the oldest in the book. Okay.
- 12:33Speaker 2: What happens now? I happen... I have me call police headquarters,
- 12:36Speaker 2: and then you'll happen to be taken to a nice,
- 12:38Speaker 2: clean cell.
- 12:47Speaker 5: And now, back to Boston Blackie. Blackie and Mary Wesley
- 12:57Speaker 5: buy a vase at an auction. Later, a man in
- 13:00Speaker 5: a green hat who'd bid against them comes to Blackie
- 13:03Speaker 5: and tries to get the vase from him.
- 13:05Speaker 4: But Blackie refuses to give it to him and sends.
- 13:08Speaker 5: The vase to Mary's by messenger. The messenger is shot
- 13:11Speaker 5: and killed. Investigation proves the vase has no value.
- 13:15Speaker 4: And nothing is found inside it.
- 13:18Speaker 2: But obviously, the man in the green hat has thought
- 13:21Speaker 2: it worth his while to kill for it.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Unable, however, to find out anything about the vase or
- 13:26Speaker 5: the man in the green hat, Blackie returns to his
- 13:29Speaker 5: apartment where he confronts the strange man a second time.
- 13:33Speaker 5: In a fight, Blackie overpowers him and calls for Faraday.
- 13:37Speaker 5: As we return to our story, Faraday has just arrived. Okay, Faraday,
- 13:42Speaker 5: here he is, the man in the green hat.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Come on.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Now, how do I know this is the man in
- 13:47Speaker 4: the green hat?
- 13:48Speaker 2: Because I say so. He pulled a gun on me.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Oh, no, Blackie, not that. Since when have you started
- 13:53Speaker 4: to get excited about somebody pulling a gun on you?
- 13:56Speaker 2: I don't actually care about that, Faraday, but this guy
- 13:59Speaker 2: confessed to me that he killed that messenger.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Is that right, mister?
- 14:02Speaker 2: That guy's wacky, Inspector. He probably killed that messenger himself.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Now, Blackie, what kind of a slap are you trying
- 14:08Speaker 4: to make out of me?
- 14:08Speaker 2: Any kind you prefer. If you can't figure out a
- 14:10Speaker 2: way to get this guy down to headquarters.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Well, to get him down there, I have to hold
- 14:13Speaker 4: him for something. And what's he done wrong that you
- 14:16Speaker 4: can prove?
- 14:17Speaker 2: All right, Faraday. If you can't arrest him for what
- 14:19Speaker 2: he confessed to me or for pulling a gun on me...
- 14:22Speaker 2: Then arrest him for carrying a concealed weapon. I never
- 14:25Speaker 2: carried a gun. Oh, no? You might search him and see.
- 14:30Speaker 4: Why, of all the... I'm getting out of here.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Search him, Faraday. Just once over lightly. Yeah, go ahead,
- 14:37Speaker 2: search him. Then maybe this guy will keep his mouth shut. Oh,
- 14:40Speaker 2: it's a good idea.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Find anything?
- 14:44Speaker 4: You know I'm not going to find... Hey, what's this?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Looks like his gun, Inspector.
- 14:51Speaker 4: Hey, I didn't have that on me a minute ago.
- 14:53Speaker 2: That's what you do now, don't you? I put it
- 14:56Speaker 2: on you where it belonged. And now you're going to
- 14:59Speaker 2: jail where you belong.
- 15:10Speaker 4: I got it, Blackie. We took fingerprints of the men
- 15:12Speaker 4: on the green hat and found a match for them
- 15:14Speaker 4: here in our files.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Oh, swell. Who is he?
- 15:17Speaker 4: Uh, Frank Kittredge.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Kittredge, Kittredge. Yeah. Are they? You know, I have part
- 15:23Speaker 2: of the answer to this already. Huh?
- 15:25Speaker 4: The vase I bought.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Once belonged to a Nancy Kittredge. Yeah? She died last week,
- 15:30Speaker 2: killed in an auto accident. Could be this Frank Kittredge
- 15:33Speaker 2: is her husband, her brother. So what?
- 15:36Speaker 4: The vase was still worthless, Blackie. Now, Kittredge still killed
- 15:39Speaker 4: that messenger in trying to get it.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Well, look, who was Frank Kittredge? What had he done
- 15:44Speaker 2: to get his prints in your file? Robbed a bank
- 15:46Speaker 2: six years ago.
- 15:48Speaker 4: He was let out of jail just the day before yesterday.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Well, now we're getting somewhere, Faraday. He robbed a bank, huh?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Ever recover the money?
- 15:54Speaker 4: Not a dime of it.
- 15:55Speaker 2: This is getting almost simple. Kittredge wanted that vase because
- 15:59Speaker 2: it had something to do with the whereabouts of that
- 16:01Speaker 2: stolen money. Well, what could that vase have had to
- 16:03Speaker 2: do with it?
- 16:04Speaker 4: It was empty, and there was nothing buried in that clay.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I know. The thing is, Kittredge thought it had something
- 16:09Speaker 2: to do with the money. We know that vase didn't.
- 16:13Speaker 2: But there may be another vase.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Well, then why wasn't Kittredge after the other one?
- 16:17Speaker 2: For the same reason. He thought that he wanted the
- 16:22Speaker 2: one we had. Look, how long are you going to
- 16:25Speaker 2: hold Kittredge?
- 16:26Speaker 4: We're going to arraign him in a couple of hours.
- 16:29Speaker 4: You'll have to testify against him.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Okay. I'll be back in an hour. Where are you going?
- 16:33Speaker 2: Back to where this all began, Faraday, to that auctioneer's.
- 16:36Speaker 2: There must have been another phase in the effects of
- 16:38Speaker 2: Mantry Kittredge. That's the one Frank Kittredge wanted, and the
- 16:42Speaker 2: one I'm going to get. Hello? Yes, I auctioned off
- 16:53Speaker 2: all Nancy Kittredge's property. Just sold the last piece this afternoon, Blackie. Well, look, Mr. Smith,
- 16:58Speaker 2: do you remember the vase I bought this morning? Yes,
- 17:01Speaker 2: I think I do. There must have been another vase
- 17:03Speaker 2: in the stuff of hers you auctioned off. There has
- 17:06Speaker 2: to be another one. No, I'm mistaken, Blackie. There was
- 17:09Speaker 2: no other vase. I'm sorry. You're sorry? You don't know
- 17:14Speaker 2: how sorry I am.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Next case.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Frank Kittredge, charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
- 17:28Speaker 2: How do you plead, Kittredge?
- 17:30Speaker 4: Not guilty.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Who preferred charges, Inspector Faraday?
- 17:33Speaker 4: Boston Blackie.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Boston Blackie, come forward, please. I'm right here, Your Honor.
- 17:37Speaker 2: You charged this man with carrying a concealed weapon? No,
- 17:39Speaker 2: Your Honor, I did not.
- 17:41Speaker 4: What's the matter with you, Blackie? You told me this
- 17:43Speaker 4: guy pulled a gun on you.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Sorry, Faraday. Then there is no charge. You can go, Kittredge. Thanks.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Wait, wait a minute, Your Honor.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Case dismissed. Next case.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Blackie, you double-crosser. What's the idea?
- 17:55Speaker 2: A good one, Faraday. I'll tell you all about it later.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Hello?
- 18:14Speaker 2: Mary, this is Blackie. Oh, Blackie.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Did the auctioneer have another vase?
- 18:17Speaker 2: No, but I'm convinced there is another one. And I'm
- 18:20Speaker 2: letting Kittredge lead me to it. How? Well, I got
- 18:23Speaker 2: him out of that charge of carrying a concealed weapon.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And that guy's not dumb. He did just what I
- 18:28Speaker 2: thought he'd do. He's come right to the auctioneer's.
- 18:30Speaker 4: How do you know that?
- 18:31Speaker 2: I trailed him as far as the auctioneer's building. He's
- 18:34Speaker 2: upstairs with the auctioneer now. And I'm down here in
- 18:36Speaker 2: the lobby of the building in a phone booth. What
- 18:38Speaker 2: can the auctioneer tell Mr. Kittredge that he didn't tell you?
- 18:41Speaker 2: All he can do is tell him the same thing. So,
- 18:44Speaker 2: then Kittredge is going to go look for it.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Oh, I see.
- 18:47Speaker 2: And you're going to tell him. Uh-oh. Here he comes now.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I'll call you later, Mary.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 18:54Speaker 2: No, wait, Mary. He's getting into the phone booth next
- 18:56Speaker 2: to mine.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Are you able to hear what he says?
- 19:00Speaker 2: I'm not interested in that. If I can just count
- 19:02Speaker 2: the clicks as he dials, I'll know what the number
- 19:04Speaker 2: is he's calling.
- 19:05Speaker 3: All right.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'll be quiet. One, two. One, two. One, two, three, four, five. One, two, three. One, two.
- 19:18Speaker 5: One. One.
- 19:19Speaker 2: One.
- 19:20Speaker 4: You got a problem?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Yes, Mary. It's Barrett, Abbott, or Acree, 53211.
- 19:27Speaker 4: I'll call you back.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I want to get in touch with Faraday right away.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Right. Faraday speaking.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Faraday, this is Blackie.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Yeah, Blackie, but speak louder, will you?
- 19:48Speaker 2: I can't. Listen. Go to your telephone. number crossfire, will you?
- 19:51Speaker 2: And give me the address of the number for Barrett, Abbott,
- 19:54Speaker 2: or Acri 53211. Well, there is no.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Barrett or Acri 5, Blackie. It's got to be Abbott.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Okay, look it up, will you?
- 20:02Speaker 4: Sure.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Hold everything. I'll do that later, but right now, I'll
- 20:05Speaker 2: just hold the phone. Hello?
- 20:20Speaker 4: Yes?
- 20:21Speaker 2: Is Frank Kittredge here? Why, I know. Who are you?
- 20:25Speaker 2: Boston Blackie. He just called you. Sure he did. What
- 20:29Speaker 2: do you want with Frank? Nothing right now, Miss Thomas.
- 20:31Speaker 2: But I want something from you.
- 20:33Speaker 4: A vase. A vase?
- 20:35Speaker 2: You must be in the wrong... In the wrong house? Well,
- 20:37Speaker 2: right or wrong, I'm in.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Look, I don't understand what this is all about.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You're on a minute as soon as I find that vase.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I'm sure you must be in the wrong house, and
- 20:44Speaker 4: I'm in no mood to.
- 20:44Speaker 2: There it is, on the table over there. Exactly like
- 20:46Speaker 2: the one that I bought at the auction. Oh. Oh, yes.
- 20:49Speaker 2: My sister made that for me. She gave it to
- 20:51Speaker 2: me years ago. You're Nancy Kittredge's sister, huh? Well, that
- 20:54Speaker 2: explains a lot.
- 20:55Speaker 4: Wait. You can't take that vase.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I'm not taking it anywhere. I'm leaving it right here. Well,
- 21:00Speaker 2: you can sweep it up. What did you do that for?
- 21:02Speaker 2: To find this. This little cylinder.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Where'd that come from? The vase was empty.
- 21:08Speaker 2: This was baked into the clay. Why? Only your sister
- 21:11Speaker 2: could tell you that. She made this vase, you said?
- 21:14Speaker 5: Yes.
- 21:15Speaker 4: She used to work in a pottery, but what's that... Okay, Blackie,
- 21:18Speaker 4: where is he?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Did you find that other vase?
- 21:19Speaker 4: Was there anything in it?
- 21:21Speaker 2: One thing at a time, Faraday. Yes, I found the vase.
- 21:24Speaker 2: There it is on the floor in pieces.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Good heavens, the police too? Well, Blackie, did you find
- 21:28Speaker 4: anything in that second vase?
- 21:29Speaker 2: Yes, Faraday, this little cylinder. And inside it, guess what?
- 21:33Speaker 2: A receipt for a trunk in storage at the Jefferson Warehouse.
- 21:37Speaker 2: And in that trunk, I think you'll find the money
- 21:39Speaker 2: Kittredge stole from that bank. Thanks, Blackie. Uh.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I'll take that. And now we're going to stay here
- 21:44Speaker 4: and wait for Kittredge.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I don't know what makes you think he's coming here.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Didn't he phone you about a half an hour ago? Wait. Yes.
- 21:51Speaker 4: He doesn't say he wasn't coming out to dinner.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Didn't he ask you about a vase?
- 21:54Speaker 5: Wait. No, no.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Well, that means he didn't know it was here.
- 21:57Speaker 2: I know. That tells me where he thinks it is
- 22:00Speaker 2: and where he is, too.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Where?
- 22:02Speaker 2: At Mary's. He still doesn't believe my story. Come on.
- 22:05Speaker 2: He killed a messenger. He tried to kill me, and
- 22:06Speaker 2: he may try to kill Mary. Oh. Look, Miss Wesley, stop.
- 22:17Speaker 4: Lying to me.
- 22:18Speaker 2: You've got that.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Face, and I know it.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Please, how many more times do I have to tell you?
- 22:21Speaker 4: Not many, because if you don't stop lying to me,
- 22:23Speaker 4: I'm going to put a bullet right through your head.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I want that face.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I don't have it.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Honest, I don't. The police do, and it's broken to
- 22:28Speaker 4: bits anyway.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Stop lying.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I'm telling you the truth.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Okay, I said I'd kill you, and I'm going to...
- 22:32Speaker 4: Put down.
- 22:34Speaker 2: The hand, Mary. Pick up his gun.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Oh, I got it, Blackie. Thanks, Mr.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Blackie.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Come on, Kentridge. We're going to jail. Oh, Blackie, I've
- 22:41Speaker 4: never been so happy to see anybody in all my life.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Oh, shucks, Mary. It weren't nothing. It weren't nothing. Hello.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Remember me?
- 22:59Speaker 4: Well, hello, Blackie. We going to break any more vases today?
- 23:03Speaker 2: No, Mary. In fact, I've brought you another one to
- 23:05Speaker 2: replace the one you broke. What? Now may I come in? Well,
- 23:09Speaker 2: of course you may, but you didn't have to buy
- 23:10Speaker 2: me another one. No, I wanted to. Oh.
- 23:14Speaker 5: You know, I still don't know what this is all about.
- 23:16Speaker 5: How did that storage receipt get into that vase in
- 23:19Speaker 5: the first place?
- 23:20Speaker 2: Well, Mary, Frank... Frank Kittredge robbed a bank and knew
- 23:24Speaker 2: he was going to jail for it. So he put
- 23:26Speaker 2: the money in storage and gave his wife the storage receipt.
- 23:29Speaker 2: And then she put it in the crate as she
- 23:30Speaker 2: was making the vase, huh?
- 23:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 2: And according to Frank's confession this afternoon, he watched her
- 23:35Speaker 2: do it, too. Yes, but darling, she made so many
- 23:37Speaker 2: vases in the pottery.
- 23:39Speaker 4: After it was baked, how would she know which one
- 23:40Speaker 4: held the receipt?
- 23:41Speaker 2: She made a slight error in the design. Then bought
- 23:45Speaker 2: it from the pottery herself.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Well, yes, but weren't there two vases just alike?
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yes, there was. And that's what caused all Frank's trouble.
- 23:53Speaker 2: After he went to jail, his sister decided to double-cross him.
- 23:56Speaker 2: She made another vase just like the first one, gave
- 23:59Speaker 2: the real one to his sister, and kept the phony
- 24:01Speaker 2: one for Frank to have when he gets it back.
- 24:03Speaker 5: But didn't she think that Frank would know she tricked
- 24:05Speaker 5: him when he didn't find the storage receipt in that vase?
- 24:08Speaker 2: She was going to pretend someone else had made a
- 24:09Speaker 2: mistake in the design, just like hers. And you have
- 24:12Speaker 2: to believe her, because he saw her put the receipt
- 24:15Speaker 2: in the clay before she made the vase. Oh, I see.
- 24:18Speaker 2: And she was going to use the stolen money herself. Yeah, someday.
- 24:21Speaker 2: When she felt she needed it, she might have taken
- 24:23Speaker 2: it out of store as soon as Frank went to jail,
- 24:25Speaker 2: but she was afraid it was too hot. Well, here's
- 24:28Speaker 2: the vase I brought you to replace the one you broke.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Don't you want to see it?
- 24:31Speaker 3: I certainly do.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Finish unwrapping it, will you?
- 24:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 24:37Speaker 5: There.
- 24:38Speaker 2: How do you like it?
- 24:39Speaker 4: Oh, Blackie, it's beautiful, isn't it?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Here, here, let me have it. I'm glad you like it.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Here you are. I'm going to put it.
- 24:46Speaker 4: Right over here.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Oh!
- 24:48Speaker 2: Oh!
- 24:48Speaker 4: Oh, Blackie, wouldn't you know it?
- 24:50Speaker 3: It smashed it.
- 24:52Speaker 2: That's all right, Mary. Only when I come back, I'm
- 24:55Speaker 2: going to bring you an iron bucket. Oh! THE END.
- 27:34Speaker 1: That concludes Boston Blackie and A Vase Leads to Murder.
