- 0:47Speaker 2: We have another guest on the program, a man who
- 0:49Speaker 2: is not just a boxing promoter, but a former professional
- 0:52Speaker 2: fighter himself. I'm so excited to talk to this guy,
- 0:55Speaker 2: so let's not waste any time. Let's welcome to the ring,
- 0:58Speaker 2: mister Bobby Hits. Bobby Welcome, Hi, guys, how are you fantastic?
- 1:04Speaker 4: Fantastic?
- 1:05Speaker 2: So yeah, I really appreciate you being here and got
- 1:09Speaker 2: a lot of questions for you. But first things first,
- 1:12Speaker 2: you're here to promote a fighting event, a showcase. This Saturday,
- 1:16Speaker 2: July nineteenth, Bridgeview Illinois. Can you give us a little
- 1:19Speaker 2: preview of this event, what kind of fights, how many
- 1:22Speaker 2: fights we would expect, any names we should be keeping
- 1:24Speaker 2: an eye out for it. Please let us know all
- 1:26Speaker 2: about this.
- 1:27Speaker 3: You know, this is one of our series of fights.
- 1:30Speaker 3: We just started working with the hard Rock Casino here
- 1:32Speaker 3: in Rockford, Illinois. So I called this the hard Rock
- 1:35Speaker 3: Fight Series because they are one of our title sponsors
- 1:38Speaker 3: of the event. And this is just a great show,
- 1:40Speaker 3: good local flavor with some you know. I have the
- 1:44Speaker 3: heavyweight Deontay Pettigrew, number seven in the world and the
- 1:48Speaker 3: WBA expecting big things out of him. Marlon Harrington from Detroit.
- 1:54Speaker 3: On the comeback trail. You have Hunter Lee, who is
- 1:57Speaker 3: part of the brand new Kronk Stable, who the branding
- 2:02Speaker 3: is fantastic being part of Kronc. If you're a boxing fan,
- 2:06Speaker 3: Kronk was all the rage and it's gonna be back again,
- 2:08Speaker 3: and so I hope the least part of that, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: Eddie Ala Veriz, Lucas Moldenauer, Local Chicago kids, Lane Lane Hamlin,
- 2:17Speaker 3: Tellia Halverson, Jonathan Cruz, Demetrius Green. This is a stacked card.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It is it. We're gonna have twelve thirteen fights. It's
- 2:29Speaker 3: gonna be in a stravaganza. I'm just crossing my fingers
- 2:33Speaker 3: that the rain holds out. This is an outdoor event
- 2:35Speaker 3: and a beautiful soccer stadium where the Chicago Fire played.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It was our professional soccer team here. But if we
- 2:42Speaker 3: have to move, and we'll move it inside to the
- 2:44Speaker 3: dome and the show must go on. So we're still
- 2:46Speaker 3: in business. We're good.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I love it. Got to have a backup plan. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 2: So for those of you who don't know you, you
- 2:53Speaker 2: know you're a Chicago promoter, Chicago based promoter. I went
- 2:57Speaker 2: there once many long time ago. I got to get back.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But what's the fight culture out there like in Chicago.
- 3:02Speaker 2: You know, all we hear is New York and Vegas,
- 3:04Speaker 2: New York and Vegas. What is what does Chicago bring
- 3:06Speaker 2: to the table.
- 3:08Speaker 3: You know, Chicago is under the radar, so to speak,
- 3:13Speaker 3: and I like being that way. I don't like being
- 3:16Speaker 3: in the spotlight. I don't like all eyes on you
- 3:19Speaker 3: because it's a bigger it's a bigger risk for the fighters.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And right now we're in a redevelopment stage. We're gonna rebuild.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's like having a professional sports team you know you
- 3:31Speaker 3: you have a nice run. I've had a great run.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I've been doing this over thirty years. I've had many
- 3:36Speaker 3: guys fight for world titles, regional titles, top ten, like like,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I've run the gamut. Every single base has been covered
- 3:45Speaker 3: as far as far as I have accomplished in boxing,
- 3:49Speaker 3: except winning a world title, a real world title, which
- 3:54Speaker 3: that's the only thing missing. But as far as building guys,
- 3:57Speaker 3: getting him raided, getting him to a title, getting to
- 4:00Speaker 3: the next level, we've done all that so right now,
- 4:03Speaker 3: and it's really post COVID, because you know, COVID, we
- 4:06Speaker 3: lost almost three years of business and a lot of
- 4:09Speaker 3: guys who were part of the roster have just fallen off,
- 4:12Speaker 3: turned off the boxing, and at the phenomenon nowadays, the
- 4:15Speaker 3: guys have seven, eight, nine fights and they just decided
- 4:18Speaker 3: to quit. It's too much for them. So the days
- 4:21Speaker 3: of having the guys that have fifteen, eighteen, twenty twenty
- 4:24Speaker 3: five fights here in Chicago, that's you got a better
- 4:29Speaker 3: chance to see him Bigfoot. But we're developing that. We're
- 4:33Speaker 3: developing that again and bringing this new crop of talent.
- 4:36Speaker 3: So all the folks I mentioned earlier are all part
- 4:40Speaker 3: of the rebuild, and like I tell these these fighters, listen,
- 4:44Speaker 3: Chicago's dying for a superstar. Is it going to be you?
- 4:47Speaker 3: You know, so Chicago's wide open for one of these
- 4:51Speaker 3: kids to step up and take the mantle.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Now we've heard a couple of times from different people,
- 4:56Speaker 2: other guests that yeah, after COVID, you know, kind of
- 4:58Speaker 2: things fell off. And I'm not even saying asking this
- 5:01Speaker 2: as a joke. You think because everybody was inside and
- 5:04Speaker 2: nobody was working out, everybody just started eating and you know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: kind of not taking care of themselves. Is that part
- 5:09Speaker 2: of it?
- 5:10Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you, being a fighter is a lot
- 5:13Speaker 3: about discipline. It's a lot about you know, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 3: doing the right things. And I think when you have
- 5:21Speaker 3: all that free time, I even know myself, My god,
- 5:24Speaker 3: COVID was the best thing that ever happened to me
- 5:26Speaker 3: because I finally in my whole entire life got like
- 5:28Speaker 3: a three year vacation. It was fantastic. I had. I
- 5:32Speaker 3: had a blast during COVID. It was fantastic. But your
- 5:35Speaker 3: eye gets off of work, Like to me, I wasn't
- 5:38Speaker 3: like I'd wake up every day like what day is it?
- 5:40Speaker 3: What do I have to do? Absolutely nothing? You know,
- 5:43Speaker 3: and we'd hang out all day long. The camaraderie between
- 5:46Speaker 3: me and my pals were just it was fantastic. It
- 5:48Speaker 3: was a it was it was an extensive spring break,
- 5:52Speaker 3: so to speak, for three years. But as a fighter,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I couldn't imagine not having anything to do. So I
- 6:00Speaker 3: think once it happens and you become a little I
- 6:02Speaker 3: guess the word civilized like you know, wow, there's you know,
- 6:05Speaker 3: like like wow, it feels good not to get up
- 6:08Speaker 3: and have to go to the gym and have to
- 6:10Speaker 3: spar and then then your whole life takes out a
- 6:12Speaker 3: different connotation. So it's like, I think COVID did a
- 6:16Speaker 3: lot of a lot of not good things for a
- 6:19Speaker 3: lot of people as far as business wise and mindset
- 6:23Speaker 3: and whatnot, because I think people became very complacent.
- 6:28Speaker 2: No, definitely, Yeah, it's a weird time for all of us.
- 6:31Speaker 2: For myself, first, of course, I got very, very very fat,
- 6:34Speaker 2: but then it was too much and so I got
- 6:36Speaker 2: into boxing classes at that time actually after COVID, so
- 6:38Speaker 2: I started to going to the gym doing sparring and
- 6:41Speaker 2: all that stuff, and it was a lot of fun.
- 6:42Speaker 2: So but it didn't work the same for everybody. Yeah, right,
- 6:46Speaker 2: but right, So, so you're you're a professional fighter, and
- 6:52Speaker 2: I wanted to see just some thoughts on your career overall.
- 6:55Speaker 2: What did you think you know, you've fought in the eighties,
- 6:57Speaker 2: Uh was it fun or what?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Because was a job?
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know, maybe it wasn't as fun it was too
- 7:02Speaker 2: focused because like I said, my boxing lessons were a
- 7:04Speaker 2: lot of fun, but I wasn't competing. I was just
- 7:07Speaker 2: farring with friends.
- 7:08Speaker 3: It was an absolute blast. It was the easiest thing
- 7:11Speaker 3: I ever did in my life compared to my life now.
- 7:14Speaker 3: If I could go back and do it all over again,
- 7:17Speaker 3: trust me, I'd have a do over tomorrow. I only
- 7:20Speaker 3: had three amateur fights and I turned pro, so I
- 7:24Speaker 3: learned on the job, which back then was a little
- 7:26Speaker 3: bit easier to do. But I said to myself, listen,
- 7:30Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to give myself at least three or
- 7:34Speaker 3: four losses before like I know my way around the
- 7:37Speaker 3: ring because I only had three amateur fights, so I
- 7:40Speaker 3: had no experience. Everything that I did in the ring
- 7:44Speaker 3: was brand new. So but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The
- 7:51Speaker 3: friendships I made in the relationships last to today. And
- 7:56Speaker 3: it was fun, Like I really enjoyed it. It got
- 7:59Speaker 3: serios is, but even the seriousness was fun because I
- 8:02Speaker 3: just really enjoyed fighting and doing what I do now.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Being a fighter was way easier if I had to
- 8:10Speaker 3: compare the two.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Trust me, that's very interesting to hear from, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 2: an insider's perspective, And I appreciate you talking about taking
- 8:18Speaker 2: losses and having to do that to learn, because a
- 8:21Speaker 2: lot of folks I think might be afraid to lose
- 8:22Speaker 2: these days, they don't take as many risks. That's my opinion.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Listen. You can't win unless you know how to lose,
- 8:30Speaker 3: because when you lose, if you take something away and
- 8:33Speaker 3: learn something, you actually won. And so you know, I
- 8:38Speaker 3: never I never got all caught up on all that
- 8:41Speaker 3: because to me, the goal I was setting myself on
- 8:45Speaker 3: what was to you know, fight for a time, whatever
- 8:49Speaker 3: the case may be. Like I didn't have I didn't
- 8:51Speaker 3: really have a end game in my mind, like, oh,
- 8:55Speaker 3: I want to be a world champion. I want to
- 8:56Speaker 3: see how far I could take it with as little
- 8:59Speaker 3: experience as I so to me, you know, listen, I
- 9:02Speaker 3: I you know Jackie Callen, I was her first fighter,
- 9:07Speaker 3: and then James Tony joined our stable and I got
- 9:10Speaker 3: to be part of his whole rise to fame. And
- 9:14Speaker 3: you know, the night he beat Michael Nunn, I was
- 9:16Speaker 3: in his corner and like so to me, like I
- 9:19Speaker 3: got my Harvard education in boxing in that that time period.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So it was the greatest thing that ever happened to
- 9:25Speaker 3: me because I got to use that in my business
- 9:28Speaker 3: life now as a promoter. So it was it was
- 9:31Speaker 3: a well, a well valued run for me. Great.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Well, I have a ton more questions, but I don't
- 9:37Speaker 2: want to monopolize the conversation. Jamison, please jump in. You
- 9:41Speaker 2: got any questions for a guest?
- 9:43Speaker 4: Yeah, So you mentioned that what you do now is
- 9:45Speaker 4: a lot more challenging than than boxing. What are some
- 9:48Speaker 4: of those challenges that you come against as being a promoter,
- 9:52Speaker 4: especially in this day and age.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Well, the first thing is making real fights, getting these
- 9:58Speaker 3: fighters to convince them that they have to have real fights,
- 10:01Speaker 3: because I tell them it's about building credibility. And a
- 10:04Speaker 3: lot of these guys they just do not want to.
- 10:08Speaker 3: They do just don't want to do the heavy lifting
- 10:12Speaker 3: and you know, or fight a local guy or whatever
- 10:15Speaker 3: the case may be. It's just I don't know. To me,
- 10:19Speaker 3: that's the hardest part making good fights, because my goal
- 10:23Speaker 3: every time out is to make good fights, make good
- 10:26Speaker 3: competitive fights. And when I can't make that for the
- 10:30Speaker 3: silliest of reasons, it's really troublesome to me. It's a
- 10:34Speaker 3: lot of like brain damage for no reason, Like my god,
- 10:37Speaker 3: Like you know, you could lead a horse to water,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you can't make him drink it. Well, these a lot
- 10:42Speaker 3: of these guys just they have this idea and I
- 10:46Speaker 3: think a lot of it comes from the buying a
- 10:48Speaker 3: fight syndrome. I can't tee how many phone calls I
- 10:51Speaker 3: get saying how much have to buy a fight on
- 10:53Speaker 3: your show? I'm like, I don't do that. So you
- 10:56Speaker 3: have these guys that call themselves promoters and literally have
- 11:00Speaker 3: guys buy on pay what's called the slap fee and
- 11:02Speaker 3: all this stuff. Like to me, you know, when I
- 11:05Speaker 3: started doing this, that was the exception, not the rule.
- 11:10Speaker 3: But now these kids will go and go fly to
- 11:13Speaker 3: these third world countries and pick up these fights and
- 11:16Speaker 3: everybody can tell what they're doing. And the problem now
- 11:19Speaker 3: is there's too much information. You can't bullshit the public.
- 11:22Speaker 3: You cannot build your record against these guys and actually
- 11:26Speaker 3: believe that they're going to believe it because the minute
- 11:29Speaker 3: someone hears your fighting, they jump on the internet and
- 11:31Speaker 3: they pull them right away. They can see what's going on.
- 11:34Speaker 3: So you can't fool these people. And to me, I
- 11:37Speaker 3: don't want to do that. I don't you know, Like
- 11:40Speaker 3: to me, if you're gonna be a fighter, be a fighter,
- 11:42Speaker 3: if you're gonna put in all that heavy work and
- 11:45Speaker 3: do all that stuff that you do to be a
- 11:46Speaker 3: fighter and train every day, then put that to test, like,
- 11:50Speaker 3: see what you're made of. There's no listen. I'd rather
- 11:53Speaker 3: you fail trying than not try it all. When I
- 11:56Speaker 3: got guys that literally will call me and say I
- 12:00Speaker 3: want to fight a bum, I don't like that term.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And I'm like, well, there's no such thing as a bum,
- 12:05Speaker 3: because anybody that climbs those steps, it just means someone's
- 12:08Speaker 3: better than someone else. But to say the word bum,
- 12:10Speaker 3: if you climb those steps, to me, you're a winner
- 12:12Speaker 3: in my eyes. There are guys that give less of
- 12:15Speaker 3: an effort. I get that those are I have another
- 12:17Speaker 3: word for them. I won't use it, but but you know,
- 12:21Speaker 3: I think if you're a fighter who trains hard and
- 12:23Speaker 3: does everything you're supposed to do, and then you don't
- 12:26Speaker 3: put that to work, you know, like Sonny, like they
- 12:30Speaker 3: said in the Bronx, till waste the talent, Like why
- 12:32Speaker 3: do all that if you're not going to put it
- 12:34Speaker 3: to the test to see where you're at, So waste
- 12:37Speaker 3: everybody's time, you know. So that's those That's one of
- 12:40Speaker 3: the things that's really problematic. Another thing is guy's idea
- 12:45Speaker 3: about how things go. Like they'll tell you when they
- 12:47Speaker 3: want to fly in where like where they want to go.
- 12:49Speaker 3: It doesn't work that way. Like I'm hosting this party,
- 12:53Speaker 3: you're my guest, I'm bringing you in, and here's how
- 12:55Speaker 3: we're going to do things. It's just it's just crazy,
- 12:58Speaker 3: you know. And it comes from being directionalists by the
- 13:01Speaker 3: people who are around you, because you know, I came
- 13:05Speaker 3: from an era being around the great Emmanuel Stewart and
- 13:08Speaker 3: the great trainers here in Angelo de d and Patlakasa,
- 13:11Speaker 3: all these different people right who literally kept kept the
- 13:15Speaker 3: fighters in in in the corral kind of like you're
- 13:21Speaker 3: a fighter that you're supposed to do and let the
- 13:23Speaker 3: business people do the business. But now the fighters all
- 13:26Speaker 3: of a sudden all want to do the business. And
- 13:28Speaker 3: to me, you can't be all things, all people, all
- 13:31Speaker 3: the time something's going to give. If you're a fighter,
- 13:35Speaker 3: surround yourself with good quality people. Let everybody do their
- 13:39Speaker 3: job and you do your job. But when they want
- 13:42Speaker 3: to start doing everybody's job, it creates mass confusion and
- 13:45Speaker 3: it's like it's a recipe for disaster. It just this.
- 13:48Speaker 3: It's difficult.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So you said you've been doing this for thirty years.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Is that something you say it was more recent or
- 13:54Speaker 2: has it always been like that?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Oh, no, it's more recent. It was never like that.
- 14:00Speaker 3: This is more recent. Like I wouldn't have lasted thirty years.
- 14:05Speaker 3: If I had to start today, I would start and
- 14:08Speaker 3: finish in one day. I'd be done. Anybody that says
- 14:10Speaker 3: they want to be a promoter, I go, what are
- 14:12Speaker 3: you met at? Your money? Like, why do you want
- 14:13Speaker 3: to do this? Well, they're like they're like, well you're
- 14:16Speaker 3: doing it. I have no choice. I'm over thirty years
- 14:19Speaker 3: on the business and I'm stuck. You have other choices.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Don't do it, Go buy a building, go do something else.
- 14:25Speaker 3: You do not want to do this. It's a it's
- 14:28Speaker 3: a thankless job because the promoter is always the bad guy.
- 14:32Speaker 3: The promoter is the guy that's always I love these
- 14:34Speaker 3: guys when they're turning pro and you go to make
- 14:37Speaker 3: a deal to sign them and they say, I don't
- 14:39Speaker 3: want to be taking advantage of it, and I just
- 14:41Speaker 3: laughed taking advantage and I go, let me ask you
- 14:43Speaker 3: a questions, son, you're a nice kid. How much money
- 14:45Speaker 3: do you have in your pocket? I got two dollars
- 14:47Speaker 3: and thirty seven cents, okay? And where do you live
- 14:51Speaker 3: with my mom and dad? And what kind of car
- 14:52Speaker 3: do you drive? Why drive my dad's car? And okay,
- 14:55Speaker 3: Well that's all fine and Danny, because that's how it
- 14:57Speaker 3: should be when you're a young kid. You that I
- 15:00Speaker 3: could take advantage of you, for the only guy that
- 15:02Speaker 3: could be taking advantage of is me. So there's nothing
- 15:05Speaker 3: I can take advantage of you for. You don't have anything.
- 15:08Speaker 3: But if the day comes or I can take advantage
- 15:12Speaker 3: of you, We're all gonna hop in my car, we're
- 15:13Speaker 3: gonna go to church and we're gonna say a prayer,
- 15:15Speaker 3: and I'll go, why is it? Because that means you
- 15:17Speaker 3: became something. So like, let's hope for that day and
- 15:21Speaker 3: then we'll worry about that at the time. But there's
- 15:23Speaker 3: not a thing that I could do to take advantage
- 15:26Speaker 3: of you because I need you to win. If you win,
- 15:29Speaker 3: you're in So like, why would I take you on,
- 15:33Speaker 3: attempt to build you and then not want what's best
- 15:36Speaker 3: for you. So like, just the promoter always gets the
- 15:41Speaker 3: bad name when it's really a lot of times it's
- 15:44Speaker 3: the fighter. People don't want to believe that the fighter
- 15:47Speaker 3: can be the bad person, but they one hundred percent
- 15:50Speaker 3: can be. I've been victim to it many times, and
- 15:54Speaker 3: I can honestly say there's never been a fighter that's
- 15:57Speaker 3: been with me that hasn't gotten paid, hasn't gotten everything
- 16:00Speaker 3: they have coming to them, that I've gone over and
- 16:02Speaker 3: above to take care of them. And I could probably
- 16:05Speaker 3: probably say the deads of gods out of the truth
- 16:07Speaker 3: because my integrity to me means more than anything. So so,
- 16:11Speaker 3: there are some unscrupulous people in this business, and I
- 16:13Speaker 3: get why people are larry, but Bobby Hits isn't one
- 16:16Speaker 3: of them. So when I could both, I could boldly
- 16:18Speaker 3: say that.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Now, with all that being said, what are some of
- 16:22Speaker 4: the craziest things you've had to go through as a promoter?
- 16:25Speaker 4: You mentioned you've been in the game so long. You're
- 16:28Speaker 4: dealing with boxers, dealing with trainers, You're dealing with agents.
- 16:31Speaker 4: What are some of the crazier things that the public
- 16:33Speaker 4: necessarily wouldn't know about? How five gets made some of
- 16:36Speaker 4: the crazier stories, but some of the things that are
- 16:38Speaker 4: kind of regular in your line of business that you're
- 16:43Speaker 4: allowed to say certain things, I know you're probably not
- 16:45Speaker 4: allowed to say.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Well, you know, I I think, you know, I think
- 16:51Speaker 3: just just just the the being uninformed about how business
- 16:59Speaker 3: actually works and kind of subscribing to the Floyd Mayweather
- 17:03Speaker 3: way of doing things, and fighters want to follow that
- 17:06Speaker 3: same path, which is nice to want to be a
- 17:08Speaker 3: world champion, but let's face it to me, I'm not
- 17:10Speaker 3: a fan of his. I don't think think I think
- 17:14Speaker 3: what Floyd did was great for Floyd, but I don't
- 17:17Speaker 3: think anybody should want to mimic that because you're not
- 17:21Speaker 3: Floyd Mayweather. It worked for him. Let him be him.
- 17:24Speaker 3: But you know, like listen, we all have our favorite singers,
- 17:26Speaker 3: we have our favorite baseball player, whatever it might be.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, we still have
- 17:32Speaker 3: to stay true to who we are. And when you
- 17:34Speaker 3: lose sight of that, you know. So, I mean, there's
- 17:38Speaker 3: crazy stuff that happens every day. Expectations like I can't
- 17:44Speaker 3: even you know. I had a manager one time who
- 17:49Speaker 3: I was trying to make a fight for their fighter,
- 17:51Speaker 3: and it was a kid's mom was his manager, and
- 17:56Speaker 3: I literally offered them ten fights that they said no to,
- 18:02Speaker 3: every single fight, And I'm like, like, this isn't like
- 18:06Speaker 3: I don't have a factory where I called back to
- 18:08Speaker 3: my warehouse and go, hey, Joe, go to aisle ten shell, fourteen,
- 18:14Speaker 3: six to the left and one on top. Give me
- 18:16Speaker 3: that guy that's undefeated, good looking, has a great record,
- 18:21Speaker 3: can't punch and can't take a punch. Give me that guy.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Like it doesn't work like that, you know. And so
- 18:27Speaker 3: when when I finally offered them the eleventh guy, I'm like,
- 18:30Speaker 3: this guy has to be the guy. Imagine that eleven
- 18:33Speaker 3: fighters you went through and you couldn't say yes to
- 18:35Speaker 3: any of them, Like like that's crazy. And I said,
- 18:39Speaker 3: why are you not taking this guy? Why am I
- 18:42Speaker 3: not taking him? They go, did you hear his interview?
- 18:45Speaker 3: I go, well, what did you hear his interview? Did
- 18:48Speaker 3: I hear his interview? I go, this isn't a debate,
- 18:50Speaker 3: it's a fight. The guy's a good speaker, God bless him,
- 18:53Speaker 3: but you're not debating him. You're fighting him. What does
- 18:56Speaker 3: the interview have to do with you taking the fight?
- 18:58Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, he did not without fighting him.
- 19:01Speaker 3: So like the silliness of stuff like that, you know.
- 19:05Speaker 3: I remember one time at one of my weigh ins. Uh.
- 19:09Speaker 3: This was early on, and you know, early on in
- 19:12Speaker 3: my career as a promoter, we had canceled the fight
- 19:15Speaker 3: like two weeks earlier because the guy who was fighting
- 19:18Speaker 3: got hurt, was sick or something. The fight got canceled. Well,
- 19:21Speaker 3: the guy showed up, and this guy was a former contender,
- 19:24Speaker 3: fought for a world title, and he came in trying
- 19:28Speaker 3: to shake me down to pay him still, and I'm
- 19:30Speaker 3: doing my book working on and I was married at
- 19:32Speaker 3: the time. My wife said, he says, hey, let him
- 19:34Speaker 3: do his stuff. He'll talk to him in and he said,
- 19:36Speaker 3: shut up, woman, this is a man's business. Mind your
- 19:38Speaker 3: fucking business to my wife, right, and she was pregnant
- 19:41Speaker 3: at the time. So he starts walking towards her very aggressively. Well,
- 19:45Speaker 3: I jumped up and left hook this guy right at
- 19:47Speaker 3: the way and bow my left hook him knocked him
- 19:49Speaker 3: out cold at the wig And and this guy just
- 19:52Speaker 3: fought for a world title you know, and I had
- 19:54Speaker 3: been retired for I don't know, four or five years
- 19:56Speaker 3: at a time, like, wow, I still got it, you know,
- 19:59Speaker 3: I mean that guy. But it's like the commission was
- 20:02Speaker 3: there and they're like, I can't believe you did that.
- 20:04Speaker 3: It's always gonna take my wife. And the one commissioner
- 20:06Speaker 3: said to me, I used to like you, now I
- 20:08Speaker 3: love you. It's about time someone stood up to these
- 20:10Speaker 3: guys when they try to bully everybody. I go, well,
- 20:12Speaker 3: it just wasn't right what he was gonna do to
- 20:14Speaker 3: my wife me. I could care less about me. I
- 20:16Speaker 3: would have worked it out with a guy, but I
- 20:17Speaker 3: felt so bad I invited them to Thanksgiving dinner, like
- 20:20Speaker 3: the next to the next day, the next week, so
- 20:22Speaker 3: I f I invited him to my house for Thanksgiving dinner.
- 20:25Speaker 3: So you know, that was that was crazy. They have
- 20:28Speaker 3: to have. But like these sometimes they push you to
- 20:31Speaker 3: the limit. You know, when I want to start getting
- 20:33Speaker 3: aggressive with women, you can't do that. It's not right.
- 20:35Speaker 4: I agree.
- 20:36Speaker 2: There's an age old that talk shit, get hit right.
- 20:41Speaker 2: So so Bobby, you know, I didn't want to talk
- 20:44Speaker 2: about your professional career a little bit more. I hope
- 20:46Speaker 2: you're not sick of talking about this, but yes, you
- 20:48Speaker 2: did fight George Foreman in nineteen eighty eight, and I
- 20:51Speaker 2: asked some questions about that. Uh, this was George's come back,
- 20:54Speaker 2: a year and two his comeback. What was the general
- 20:56Speaker 2: perception of him at that time? Is it was he
- 20:59Speaker 2: still very or was it this old guy like he's
- 21:02Speaker 2: got nothing? What was the vibe at the time when
- 21:04Speaker 2: you fought him?
- 21:06Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it was Well, first of all, gotta remember
- 21:10Speaker 3: I was a young kid. I was maybe twenty three
- 21:12Speaker 3: maybe or something, so to me, he was old, right.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But ye, but you have the idea that like fighters
- 21:21Speaker 3: weren't coming back at that age. I mean, guys were
- 21:23Speaker 3: retiring at twenty five, twenty six, twenty eight years old, right.
- 21:26Speaker 3: I think when I fought him, he was like thirty
- 21:29Speaker 3: six years old, which is a young guy. He was
- 21:31Speaker 3: thirty six or thirty eight, which is still young. I mean,
- 21:34Speaker 3: right now, forty is the new twenty as a fighter, right,
- 21:37Speaker 3: fighters fighters are fighting well into their forties and being
- 21:41Speaker 3: very competitive. But it was an anomaly back then, so
- 21:44Speaker 3: no one like really figured out me. I took the
- 21:46Speaker 3: fight on four days notice. I was supposed to fight
- 21:49Speaker 3: him three other times, and every time they pushed me
- 21:52Speaker 3: out of the fight and put someone else in. And
- 21:55Speaker 3: he I was supposed to be his very first fight
- 21:57Speaker 3: of his comeback. The fight was gonna be in France.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Something happened. They moved over here. By that time, it
- 22:02Speaker 3: moved over here to the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California.
- 22:06Speaker 3: He took on Steve Szowski. They had pushed me out
- 22:08Speaker 3: and put Steve in the fight, but I had already
- 22:10Speaker 3: been training like six months, so they didn't want any
- 22:13Speaker 3: part of me. And so like that happened three other times. Well,
- 22:18Speaker 3: the fourth time, I literally, you know, was come off
- 22:23Speaker 3: a hand injury. I was hanging out in a nightclub,
- 22:25Speaker 3: like the last thing I was thinking about was fighting,
- 22:27Speaker 3: and I went and checked my messages and my trainers like,
- 22:30Speaker 3: let me a message on my recorder saying meet me
- 22:33Speaker 3: at the airport tomorrow. We got the form and fight
- 22:34Speaker 3: and I was I was dead broke, and they offered
- 22:37Speaker 3: me lifetime type money and it was like, okay, let's go,
- 22:40Speaker 3: you know, like I didn't. I didn't believe that I
- 22:44Speaker 3: would have anything to worry about. And this is an
- 22:46Speaker 3: old guy, right, Well, I learned real quick what old
- 22:49Speaker 3: is right, and so when they say youth is waistedunded young,
- 22:53Speaker 3: it held true to me. But out of that fight
- 22:55Speaker 3: a lot of great, tremendous things happened, and so I
- 22:58Speaker 3: was very you know, I formed a great friendship with
- 23:01Speaker 3: him after the fight, him his corner which was Archie
- 23:04Speaker 3: Moore and Ron sand Like, we all went out for dinner.
- 23:07Speaker 3: It was great. We had a great time, and through
- 23:09Speaker 3: the years we would stay in touch, and I had
- 23:11Speaker 3: fighters fighting for world titles and he's doing the HBO
- 23:14Speaker 3: commentating and just very friendly his brother Roy. So when
- 23:18Speaker 3: he passed, it was very saddening to me because it
- 23:21Speaker 3: was like an end different era and him and I
- 23:23Speaker 3: will forever be connected to one another. And what that
- 23:27Speaker 3: fight against him did for me as a person opened
- 23:31Speaker 3: up a whole bunch of doors, which then trickled down
- 23:34Speaker 3: and opened up a whole bunch of doors for a
- 23:35Speaker 3: lot of other people. So like me taking one bad
- 23:38Speaker 3: situation and almost kind of throwing myself on the sword
- 23:43Speaker 3: for the betterment of what I do now was basically
- 23:47Speaker 3: what is the takeaway. I don't like talking about it.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm a winner. I don't like to lose. I'm not
- 23:53Speaker 3: happy about it. I don't I take no. You know,
- 23:57Speaker 3: when people talk to me about it, I really don't
- 23:59Speaker 3: like it, you know, but at the end of the day,
- 24:04Speaker 3: let's face it, if I would have beat George Foreman,
- 24:06Speaker 3: you guys would have been enough to Bobby hits Grown.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Who'd want to do that?
- 24:11Speaker 3: So so, you know, so like to me, like it
- 24:16Speaker 3: all happened the way it was supposed to for everybody.
- 24:18Speaker 3: But you know, and uh, you know, Jerry Cooney's my
- 24:22Speaker 3: friend I love to death, And you know I told Jerry, Jerry,
- 24:25Speaker 3: no difference between me and you against George's here was
- 24:28Speaker 3: what I go. I got up. You didn't, all right,
- 24:30Speaker 3: he goes, you want to go ahead it again? Like
- 24:32Speaker 3: so it's like, you know, to me, like you know,
- 24:34Speaker 3: like we're all fighters, we're all brothers. And like about
- 24:37Speaker 3: two months ago, I got to be at an event
- 24:40Speaker 3: here in Chicago, and it was Jerry Cooney, Lou Savorice
- 24:44Speaker 3: and myself and all of us at the Common Bonds.
- 24:47Speaker 3: We all thought George Foreman. So it was kind of
- 24:49Speaker 3: neat to be that a lot of people like that
- 24:52Speaker 3: resonated with a lot of people because George is a legend,
- 24:55Speaker 3: and and and I gotta tell you like, his passing
- 24:58Speaker 3: really affected me. I was very sick and by it.
- 25:00Speaker 3: And you know, because that was the last of the
- 25:04Speaker 3: great heavyweights of that era. Larry Holmes is the last
- 25:06Speaker 3: guy left. But Larry Holmes was kind of on the
- 25:09Speaker 3: tail end of what Muhammed Ali, Ken Norton, you know,
- 25:12Speaker 3: Joe Frasier, and like, I was fortunate enough to meet
- 25:16Speaker 3: and know all those men. So it's like, like, I
- 25:19Speaker 3: just feel so blessed what boxing has done for my life,
- 25:23Speaker 3: in meeting my heroes, meeting my contemporaries, all those things
- 25:27Speaker 3: that you know, boxing has just done so much for
- 25:29Speaker 3: me that you know, those heavyweights will forever be legendary,
- 25:34Speaker 3: and I was fortunate enough to call them friends, you know,
- 25:38Speaker 3: just great.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Well, apart from the boxing, you know, Jamis and I
- 25:42Speaker 2: are and I were both born in eighty six, so
- 25:45Speaker 2: I literally would have starved to death without the George
- 25:47Speaker 2: for mcgrill in college.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Literally, yeah, well it would have been to Bobby Hits Grow.
- 25:51Speaker 3: You know, I'm in the restaurant business also, so you
- 25:53Speaker 3: would have liked it if it was the Bobby Hits Grow.
- 25:55Speaker 3: But who'd want to eat at that? Who's Bobby Hits
- 25:57Speaker 3: Nobody but.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I got one more topic to get to. But Jamison,
- 26:02Speaker 2: you got something you want to jump in with.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Yes, with boxing entering a different era now where you
- 26:07Speaker 4: have a lot of outside money, non traditional people are
- 26:10Speaker 4: backing it now than ever before. Where do you see
- 26:13Speaker 4: boxing at going the next five or so years.
- 26:16Speaker 3: You know, I've always been the tortoise in the hair,
- 26:20Speaker 3: and I've always been the tortoise, right, I've always just
- 26:23Speaker 3: done my own thing and blazed my own trails and
- 26:26Speaker 3: worked with my own money and didn't have investors and
- 26:28Speaker 3: made good deals. And we do it the old fashioned way.
- 26:30Speaker 3: We sell tickets and we just you know, we just
- 26:33Speaker 3: kind of grind it out, like I would be a
- 26:35Speaker 3: great farm system for one of those bigger guys who
- 26:38Speaker 3: like where I build guys. But at the end of
- 26:40Speaker 3: the day, like I've seen in my thirty plus years,
- 26:45Speaker 3: seen a lot of multimillionaires come into boxing and become
- 26:49Speaker 3: one hundred ears when it's all said and done, this
- 26:52Speaker 3: is a thankless sport and it's expensive, and you know,
- 26:58Speaker 3: you know, to me as a promoter, I want to
- 27:03Speaker 3: see asses in the seats. It doesn't like like like
- 27:06Speaker 3: I'm an old fashioned promolee. I'm grassroots, Like we're knocking doors,
- 27:09Speaker 3: we're selling tickets hand to hand combat, you know, we're
- 27:12Speaker 3: hanging posters were social media and now that which with
- 27:16Speaker 3: social media, these kids have so much more than I
- 27:19Speaker 3: had as a fighter. But when I was fighting, my
- 27:22Speaker 3: little group, we would easily sell six seven hundred tickets
- 27:26Speaker 3: amongst my my little following, you know. So I mean
- 27:29Speaker 3: to me, I wish I had a fighter that did that.
- 27:32Speaker 3: So I have to put a whole collection of guys
- 27:34Speaker 3: to just make up what I did as a fighter,
- 27:36Speaker 3: you know. And so I can imagine what I could
- 27:38Speaker 3: have done with social media back then, because if I'm
- 27:42Speaker 3: selling that many tickets in a day where social media
- 27:45Speaker 3: didn't exist, who knows. There was a guy here, Irish
- 27:47Speaker 3: John Collins. This guy would sell ten thousand seats like
- 27:51Speaker 3: he was a gigantic draw, you know, and you would
- 27:54Speaker 3: just say his name and people would go to the
- 27:56Speaker 3: box office. But he had his little band of workers,
- 28:00Speaker 3: family and everybody. It was very grassroots, and I kind
- 28:03Speaker 3: of took the same approach as a fighter, and I had,
- 28:05Speaker 3: you know, I had one of my friends would literally
- 28:08Speaker 3: have the tickets and we go to our local establishments
- 28:11Speaker 3: and have bus trips out of there, and we we
- 28:13Speaker 3: would we'd bring a good following when I fought, and
- 28:17Speaker 3: you know that was that was heavy work back then.
- 28:20Speaker 3: You know, nowadays you could touch so many more people
- 28:22Speaker 3: very easily that it's a wonder these kids don't sell
- 28:26Speaker 3: a thousand tickets apiece well with all the the people
- 28:30Speaker 3: they can reach very simply.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Yeah, So totally pivoting to another topic. Seems that you're
- 28:36Speaker 2: an actor as well. You're been in a lot of
- 28:38Speaker 2: TV shows, more most importantly the TV show South Side,
- 28:41Speaker 2: which is one of the funniest things I've ever seen
- 28:43Speaker 2: in my life. That absolutely what what got you into that?
- 28:49Speaker 2: How and why did you get into acting?
- 28:52Speaker 3: I started The first play I ever did was in
- 28:55Speaker 3: eighth grade, The Good It was a Good Man Charlie Brown.
- 28:58Speaker 3: I played Snoopy, and my friends and myself. The only
- 29:02Speaker 3: reason why we joined the play because you got to
- 29:04Speaker 3: get out of class. So our plan was we'll get
- 29:07Speaker 3: out of class, we'll go to these play practices, and
- 29:10Speaker 3: then when the play comes, we just won't do it.
- 29:12Speaker 3: We're not doing the play. So it got down to
- 29:16Speaker 3: the eleventh hour, the plays about a week away and
- 29:19Speaker 3: we tell the teacher I don't think we can do this.
- 29:21Speaker 3: We're not doing it. You guys have to you have
- 29:24Speaker 3: a commitment. The whole cast is counting on you. You
- 29:27Speaker 3: guys are the leads, because we got the leads in
- 29:29Speaker 3: the play and everything, well the other studies can do.
- 29:31Speaker 3: And this teacher convinced us we had to stick with it.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Well that was it. So then I really liked it.
- 29:38Speaker 3: And then I had a rock and roll band in
- 29:40Speaker 3: high school, and you know, I raced motocross and like,
- 29:44Speaker 3: I was just kind of like having fun. Then, like
- 29:47Speaker 3: Sophtmare in high school, I found boxing and that became
- 29:51Speaker 3: my thing. And then I got I was on a
- 29:55Speaker 3: couple of different TV shows, you know, in my late
- 29:58Speaker 3: teens early twenties, and then I got a wave making.
- 30:04Speaker 3: I was in the restaurant business and I was starting
- 30:07Speaker 3: to promote. I didn't have time to do it. And
- 30:09Speaker 3: then in two thousand and like ten, I got onto
- 30:12Speaker 3: a series ten or twelve called Mob Doctor. I had
- 30:16Speaker 3: a reoccurring role with William Forsyth, and I really was
- 30:19Speaker 3: at the point of my life where I could afford
- 30:21Speaker 3: to be an actor. And I was worked with Michael Matson,
- 30:24Speaker 3: who recently deceased, who became a good friend and William,
- 30:28Speaker 3: and I asked both guys, listen, what do you think
- 30:30Speaker 3: my path should be. Michael was like, listen, you're a natural,
- 30:34Speaker 3: be yourself. There's a lot of roles for you. You'll do great. William,
- 30:37Speaker 3: who's a well studied wall travel thesbian, He's like, listen,
- 30:41Speaker 3: when you were a fighter, what did you do? I go,
- 30:43Speaker 3: I went to the gym every day bingoing this craft.
- 30:46Speaker 3: You need to work on your craft all the time.
- 30:49Speaker 3: So I hired an acting coach, and you know, it
- 30:54Speaker 3: was the best advice I ever took. And Michael gave
- 30:56Speaker 3: me great advice also. So when I ever get a role,
- 31:00Speaker 3: to try to use both methods in implementing into the role.
- 31:03Speaker 3: So tonight I have to actually go to a premiere
- 31:06Speaker 3: for a movie I just shot called Before Dallas, which
- 31:09Speaker 3: is about the Kennedy assassination, and it's it's about real people.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Sam g and Connor, who was a Chicago mob guy.
- 31:17Speaker 3: My role is a guy named Milwaukee Phil Theorissio, who
- 31:20Speaker 3: is a Chicago mob other boss worked with Sam and
- 31:23Speaker 3: and our thing is it's set up the Kenny was
- 31:26Speaker 3: supposed to be killed here in Chicago, So I have
- 31:30Speaker 3: I have, you know, a few nice scenes. Then I
- 31:33Speaker 3: have another script that was just sent to me that
- 31:35Speaker 3: I'm gonna be working on in October of film So
- 31:39Speaker 3: and I've been on you know, like you said, Southside
- 31:42Speaker 3: to me, that was the most fun, the best show
- 31:44Speaker 3: I ever did in my life. And I've been on
- 31:46Speaker 3: a bunch of stuff, but the cast of south Side
- 31:49Speaker 3: was awesome. They accepted me like amazing, and the directing
- 31:55Speaker 3: with all that was just it was like, here's your lines,
- 31:59Speaker 3: but now just improv like do your thing like Ed liveds,
- 32:02Speaker 3: do the say what's that like it? So we got
- 32:04Speaker 3: to just have fun with with the scenes. And so
- 32:08Speaker 3: literally they brought my character, they brought him back again,
- 32:11Speaker 3: and then he was supposed to really be in like
- 32:14Speaker 3: I was. I was earmarked to be in like maybe
- 32:17Speaker 3: three or four episodes of season, which was fine for me,
- 32:19Speaker 3: and then that show got canceled. But what a great
- 32:22Speaker 3: group of people. It's so much fun. I really enjoyed
- 32:25Speaker 3: that show a lot. That was fun and I was
- 32:27Speaker 3: looking forward to having more time on that show.
- 32:30Speaker 2: It was heartbreaking when it got canceled. It was it
- 32:32Speaker 2: was a very sad day for me because I absolutely
- 32:34Speaker 2: loved it, Like I said, but.
- 32:36Speaker 3: Those guys are talented and funny and they're just great.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah, just still be up on HBO Max for the
- 32:41Speaker 2: listeners Southside on HBO Max. Check it out every season.
- 32:44Speaker 2: So it's not a huge commitment. But uh, and you know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: on this show, we don't just talk about boxing news.
- 32:49Speaker 2: We also do pop culture. Do you happen to have
- 32:51Speaker 2: a favorite boxing movie or do you not watch it
- 32:54Speaker 2: because you're so into the life.
- 32:57Speaker 3: You know, this man was a good friend of mine
- 33:00Speaker 3: with Jake Lamatta was a good friend of mine. So
- 33:04Speaker 3: one of my rituals before I fought was I would
- 33:06Speaker 3: watch The Raging Bull and Jake was literally true to that.
- 33:11Speaker 3: That was Jake Lamatta. I liked that movie. I liked
- 33:15Speaker 3: The Champ with John Voight. Somebody up there likes me.
- 33:20Speaker 3: You know. They did a movie about about Jackie Kallen
- 33:24Speaker 3: Against the Ropes with Omar Apps played James Tony character,
- 33:28Speaker 3: but that character was made up of myself and James.
- 33:31Speaker 3: That kind of implemented our situation. James had a much
- 33:34Speaker 3: bigger career than I, but they had given me a
- 33:39Speaker 3: role on there. But I'm like, no, I want this
- 33:44Speaker 3: type of ro if I can't have that role, and
- 33:46Speaker 3: I'm not doing it. But I'm like, hang on in
- 33:47Speaker 3: and I go. None of this would have happened without me,
- 33:50Speaker 3: you know. There's a backstory that you know, and we
- 33:53Speaker 3: laughed about it. But it's like that was also a
- 33:56Speaker 3: pretty good movie, but it wasn't accurate at all to
- 33:59Speaker 3: what really happened in our stable and on our team
- 34:02Speaker 3: between Jackie, James, myself, and the rest of the guys.
- 34:04Speaker 3: It wasn't real. And I think Hollywood did that movie
- 34:07Speaker 3: a great disservice because I think the really story, the
- 34:10Speaker 3: real story of Jackie was much better, much more. Uh,
- 34:14Speaker 3: she was much more of a philanthropist that they didn't
- 34:16Speaker 3: that didn't come out. She really tried to help everybody.
- 34:21Speaker 3: And as she did, and and and and I I
- 34:24Speaker 3: was the guinea pig for learning how to become such
- 34:27Speaker 3: a great manager, like I got all the bumps and bruises.
- 34:30Speaker 3: So so it was great, but that movie didn't do
- 34:34Speaker 3: any justice. But there's a lot of good boxing movie
- 34:36Speaker 3: though it's okay, you know, they it all depends on
- 34:41Speaker 3: how they who who choreographs it, you know, like listen,
- 34:45Speaker 3: I'm a Rocky fan, like Rocky, you know, so Rocky
- 34:48Speaker 3: one is very true to life. Rocky two, Rocky three,
- 34:51Speaker 3: they got a little bit corner, but those the first
- 34:53Speaker 3: three were pretty pretty close to the life of a fighter.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Again, that's great to know from somebody who was who
- 34:59Speaker 2: is there on the inside. Jameson, We're gonna start wrapping
- 35:02Speaker 2: this up at Jameson.
- 35:03Speaker 4: Got something to add in here? Oh no, I'm good,
- 35:06Speaker 4: he was right.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, one last quick thing before we let you
- 35:10Speaker 2: go to your premiere, Bobby. I also noticed in your
- 35:12Speaker 2: record you found a guy named Michael Tyson. Have you
- 35:15Speaker 2: ever said, yeah, I fought Tyson and then left it
- 35:17Speaker 2: at that a million times?
- 35:19Speaker 3: Well, that record's missing, that's missing five of my wins.
- 35:22Speaker 3: I was actually twenty one and four. But that's why
- 35:25Speaker 3: you can't believe everything you read. But I used to
- 35:28Speaker 3: get denied fights because it said I beat and guys
- 35:31Speaker 3: wouldn't fight me because I beat Mike Tyson. It was
- 35:33Speaker 3: iowa Mike Tyson. But I've won a lot of bets
- 35:36Speaker 3: saying listen, I beat Mike Tyson and nobody believed me.
- 35:39Speaker 3: So so I've used it to my advantage. I'm still
- 35:42Speaker 3: making money on Mike Tyson's name.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Excellent. Well, we can't thank you enough for being here.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Just another plug for your event Saturday, July nineteen, twenty
- 35:50Speaker 2: twenty five. What is the name of it again?
- 35:52Speaker 4: Sorry? Uh?
- 35:54Speaker 3: Well, this is called Boxing under the Stars, an evening
- 35:58Speaker 3: of phistic uh magic under the stars. But at my range,
- 36:03Speaker 3: we're moving inside maybe I don't know so so we
- 36:06Speaker 3: have a plan B if we have to implement it.
- 36:08Speaker 3: But this is Boxing under the Stars, a beautiful night
- 36:11Speaker 3: in Chicago, hoping for and it'd be just a great
- 36:14Speaker 3: night to be in this venue. Fantastic. Yeah.
- 36:16Speaker 2: The tagline is boxing It's better live and I absolutely agree.
- 36:20Speaker 2: So if anybody wants tickets, go to Hits Boxing dot com.
- 36:23Speaker 2: That's Hits with a Z, Hits boxing dot com. Bobby,
- 36:26Speaker 2: is there anywhere people who can follow you on social media?
- 36:28Speaker 2: Or how can we keep up with news for your
- 36:30Speaker 2: future events?
- 36:31Speaker 4: Uh?
- 36:32Speaker 3: I'm on my let's see Instagram, Bobby Hits, Bobby Hits Live. TikTok.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I don't, I haven't.
- 36:41Speaker 5: I don't use it. I'm sixty two years old. I
- 36:44Speaker 5: don't use all Facebook. I'm on Facebook.
- 36:49Speaker 2: That's okay, that's okay.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Well, and I'm on my Space. I'm on my Space.
- 36:52Speaker 4: There you go.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Exactly live journal, you know, all the cool stuff from
- 36:56Speaker 2: back in the day. Bobby, We cannot thank you enough.
- 36:59Speaker 2: This was an amazing time talking to you, and we
- 37:02Speaker 2: really appreciate your time here. Hopefully we can have you
- 37:04Speaker 2: back again so you can tell them.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Oh it was, it was so great.
- 37:07Speaker 5: Uh, you know, and you're a very handsome man, Ali,
- 37:11Speaker 5: you cover your face, You're very handsome. Yeah, it's like
- 37:18Speaker 5: seeing him without his without the mask on, was like
- 37:22Speaker 5: seeing the first time I saw a kiss without makeup.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much, and yeah, well let you go,
- 37:30Speaker 2: but hopefully we'll catch up with you against soon.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Thank you, Thank you so much to see you guys.
- 37:33Speaker 3: I appreciate your time.
- 37:34Speaker 4: Thank you, appreciate you.
- 37:36Speaker 2: All Right, we are back. That was an amazing interview.
- 37:39Speaker 2: But we don't want to let you all go Jesse yet,
- 37:40Speaker 2: because we've got to get some boxing news that happened
- 37:42Speaker 2: over over the weekend. Jamison, do you watch any boxing
- 37:44Speaker 2: this weekend? Anything interesting happens that you heard about it.
- 37:47Speaker 4: I have to watch a guy lean back to watch
- 37:50Speaker 4: the pure fight. Uh, you know, she cares one of
- 37:53Speaker 4: the guys where you know, he's one of the faces
- 37:57Speaker 4: of boxing going forward, like he's one of the younger
- 37:59Speaker 4: guys that has a high talent and it was a
- 38:03Speaker 4: very impressive night for him. And we're not taking to
- 38:06Speaker 4: the other guy just yet, but it was good to
- 38:08Speaker 4: see a guy that is built is being very good
- 38:11Speaker 4: kind of winning away. We haven't seen him win and
- 38:14Speaker 4: it's good to see that he can throw punches in
- 38:19Speaker 4: the Millville ring. He can trade without you know, he
- 38:23Speaker 4: showed a different type of fight this time around, which
- 38:27Speaker 4: was good to see. We'll see how the big fights
- 38:29Speaker 4: happened going forward. It was just good to see a nice,
- 38:33Speaker 4: solid fight, even though he won decisively no matter how
- 38:37Speaker 4: you had it. So people had a ten to two,
- 38:39Speaker 4: some people had at nine to three. No matter how
- 38:41Speaker 4: you sliced it. He won the fight. He was dominant,
- 38:44Speaker 4: but it was it was a good contested fight, like
- 38:47Speaker 4: he got hit with some shots. By the end of
- 38:49Speaker 4: the day, he was victorious. And he moves on and
- 38:52Speaker 4: hopefully he fights a bigger name and we can get
- 38:54Speaker 4: a a mini mega fight with him and whoever else
- 38:57Speaker 4: it might be in the future.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to give you a shout out, Jamison
- 39:02Speaker 2: as usual. You know, you know, you know what you're
- 39:04Speaker 2: talking about because previous episode number nineteen. You said, you said,
- 39:09Speaker 2: I want to see Sugar be challenge, have to really
- 39:12Speaker 2: do something different, fight differently, adapt all of that, and
- 39:16Speaker 2: williams Cepeta over the weekend he you know, shout out
- 39:19Speaker 2: to him by the way. You know, yes, it was
- 39:21Speaker 2: a pretty clear loss, but William Sieppeta has my respect.
- 39:24Speaker 2: He put on a wonderful performance. The man did not
- 39:27Speaker 2: slow down, did not tire. He came to play. But
- 39:31Speaker 2: he really put shit Court through the ringer.
- 39:33Speaker 4: You know.
- 39:33Speaker 2: He had to not just rely on sliding around, moving
- 39:37Speaker 2: away fighting like Zippeeda got him in the corner many times.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Chakor's defense had to be as best as ever been.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Sa Court showed a lot of power. Zipeta took all
- 39:46Speaker 2: those power shots with grace, and I think it's definitely
- 39:49Speaker 2: should Core's best performance. What I really think, I hope
- 39:53Speaker 2: rather is that this shuts up the haters, you know,
- 39:55Speaker 2: because again I've been a Schkor fan, I've been a supporter,
- 39:58Speaker 2: and even I will admit that, you know, yeah, his
- 40:01Speaker 2: fights are not the most dynamic, exciting, energetic, especially the
- 40:04Speaker 2: Edwin Dillo Santos one.
- 40:06Speaker 4: We talked about that.
- 40:06Speaker 2: We're not going to rehash it. But yeah, you said
- 40:09Speaker 2: that you wanted to see. I think we saw exactly
- 40:13Speaker 2: what you wanted to see. Is that the case absolutely.
- 40:16Speaker 4: When it comes to really good fighters, you want to
- 40:18Speaker 4: see if they can win in multiple ways, right, because
- 40:20Speaker 4: we all know everybody has a fastball, every fighter has
- 40:23Speaker 4: their strengths, but what do they do when they got
- 40:26Speaker 4: to win via plan bc AD. That's what makes a
- 40:30Speaker 4: great fire in my opinion, when you have to win
- 40:31Speaker 4: we don't have your best stuff, or when you have
- 40:34Speaker 4: to just on the fly, how do you do that?
- 40:37Speaker 4: That's always my thing. So it was good to see
- 40:39Speaker 4: him fighting a different element. It didn't look like he
- 40:42Speaker 4: was really challenged by the strength of the opposition. Didn't
- 40:48Speaker 4: feel that way. It didn't feel that way. Could be wrong,
- 40:50Speaker 4: but it didn't feel like he was worried about the
- 40:52Speaker 4: powers beta. So that's just kind of how it goes.
- 40:55Speaker 4: But it was just good to see him exchange a
- 40:58Speaker 4: little bit more than he has asked, take more chances
- 41:01Speaker 4: would also be the aggressor, like we haven't seen a
- 41:04Speaker 4: whole lot in the past, so it was definitely good
- 41:05Speaker 4: to see.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're definitely correct that he wasn't worried
- 41:09Speaker 2: about power, but I think he definitely got caught by
- 41:11Speaker 2: Septa speed. Yes, it was moving fast and you know,
- 41:15Speaker 2: known for being one of the best at hitting and
- 41:17Speaker 2: not getting hit. Uh it, he got hit. He got
- 41:21Speaker 2: hit several times. There was that one. Oh I wish
- 41:24Speaker 2: I remember which round, but it was one of the
- 41:25Speaker 2: earlier ones.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Through a round.
- 41:28Speaker 2: He got wobbled. He got hit in the chin, he
- 41:30Speaker 2: got wobbled. So you know, she Core is not not unbeatable.
- 41:33Speaker 2: He's not invincible by any means.
- 41:35Speaker 3: And paid out.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Like I said, definitely put up a strong fight no
- 41:40Speaker 2: matter what. You know, I want to see z to
- 41:41Speaker 2: pay his next fight, win or lose. He's proven himself
- 41:44Speaker 2: to be to be a yeah, definite contender. And I
- 41:48Speaker 2: also will take some some credit here for being on
- 41:50Speaker 2: shikhors side even when people were talking shit, saying, you know,
- 41:53Speaker 2: he's boring, he's he's over hyped, et cetera. I guess
- 41:57Speaker 2: I kind of felt that the kid had this in him,
- 41:59Speaker 2: had this kind of and you know, hope we see
- 42:01Speaker 2: it going forward. So Chaquor ends a beta, I'll be
- 42:05Speaker 2: there definitely for your next fight. The other thing that
- 42:08Speaker 2: happened this weekend, which is more hilarious than than anything
- 42:12Speaker 2: is Edgar Berlanga over hyped, burnout. Edgar from New York.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Puerto Rican fighter from New York fought against Hems this
- 42:22Speaker 2: year as and Edinburgh. Langa talked a lot of shit.
- 42:25Speaker 2: You know, he's after his canial loss. Somehow he talked
- 42:28Speaker 2: even more shit because he didn't die. I don't know.
- 42:30Speaker 2: I don't know what that reasoning was.
- 42:32Speaker 3: But he got.
- 42:33Speaker 2: Knocked out in very clear and hilarious fashion on round five.
- 42:37Speaker 2: After talking in interviews about how his chin, Bro, you
- 42:40Speaker 2: can't You've never seen a chin like this. I don't
- 42:42Speaker 2: care if I get hit with a bulldozer. I'm standing
- 42:44Speaker 2: up on my two feet.
- 42:45Speaker 3: Blah blah blah.
- 42:47Speaker 2: What did you think about this? The results of this fight?
- 42:50Speaker 4: One, it was funny, but two, it's very hard for
- 42:54Speaker 4: guys to fight at home. It's very hard, man, and
- 42:59Speaker 4: I don't think it would have changed. I'm not a
- 43:00Speaker 4: big fan of his in general, but it's just very
- 43:03Speaker 4: difficult to fight at home. There's a certain expectation you
- 43:06Speaker 4: have when you're at home that it's not the case
- 43:08Speaker 4: in other places. So but yeah, it was more hilarious
- 43:12Speaker 4: than anything for all the shit he talked previously, and
- 43:15Speaker 4: for that to happen, it was kind of wild, but
- 43:18Speaker 4: that's how it goes sometimes. But yeah, it's curse of
- 43:21Speaker 4: Fat Joe. Fat Joe walked the Yankees out game through
- 43:24Speaker 4: the World Series last year. They lost on a way
- 43:26Speaker 4: of getting bounced in five games in the World Series.
- 43:30Speaker 4: And of course he walked Berlanga out this past weekend.
- 43:33Speaker 4: And you know, y'all saw him get leaned back. So yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 4: y'all see, Yeah, it's good.
- 43:40Speaker 2: I love the sports so much because it could be
- 43:41Speaker 2: very serious and tense and dramatic, but also it can
- 43:44Speaker 2: be hilarious, like like you said, just now, oh man,
- 43:47Speaker 2: Now you know, I'll admit I was a bit naive,
- 43:50Speaker 2: you know when Berlino was up and coming. I think
- 43:52Speaker 2: he started when I noticed that he was fighting. It
- 43:55Speaker 2: was during the RONA because I remember some fights without crowds,
- 43:58Speaker 2: and his whole thing was like, oh, fifteen first round knockouts,
- 44:01Speaker 2: you know, in a row, like he just kept knocking
- 44:04Speaker 2: out guys, and I was like, Okay, well, you know,
- 44:06Speaker 2: I understand the hype machine, but hey, this guy's got
- 44:09Speaker 2: good power. You know, maybe with time and he develops
- 44:11Speaker 2: the skills, but he might be a great fighter, but
- 44:14Speaker 2: that kind of crashed and burned pretty quickly. I think
- 44:18Speaker 2: I don't remember which fight I saw where I actually
- 44:20Speaker 2: went the distance and I was like, oh no, this
- 44:22Speaker 2: guy's definitely been overhyped and with any real competition, you
- 44:26Speaker 2: know he's going to be laid out. I don't think
- 44:28Speaker 2: he deserved the Canelo fight. It was. It was a
- 44:32Speaker 2: fun fight though. I had a good time, a lot
- 44:34Speaker 2: of energy, so I really enjoyed that fight. So I'm
- 44:37Speaker 2: not going to talk shit about the match itself, but
- 44:40Speaker 2: it goes to show that, you know, the biggest name
- 44:43Speaker 2: in boxing, le face of boxing, could not knock out
- 44:45Speaker 2: Edgar Berlanga when hams Ashiers did in five rounds. That's
- 44:49Speaker 2: another thing, not even like round eleven or twelve, that part.
- 44:53Speaker 4: But also I'm always I'm always weary of guys that
- 44:56Speaker 4: are knockout artists, especially when they're not fighting any quality
- 44:59Speaker 4: fighters best what's quick. It's one thing not the get
- 45:03Speaker 4: a guy out in six, seven, eight rounds, but when
- 45:05Speaker 4: you're like, knock guys out in one or two rounds
- 45:07Speaker 4: normally not fighting anybody like, that's always a you know,
- 45:10Speaker 4: a telltale sign of things like if you're if you
- 45:14Speaker 4: just taking if you're getting people out here in the
- 45:15Speaker 4: first sec round, you're not fighting quality enough guys for
- 45:18Speaker 4: you to be talking like he was talking, and it showed.
- 45:21Speaker 4: Boy did his show.
- 45:23Speaker 2: I think we talked a couple episodes ago about Mike
- 45:25Speaker 2: Tyson and how his first round knockouts and you know whatever,
- 45:29Speaker 2: a minute and twenty seconds, minut and a half knockouts.
- 45:32Speaker 2: You know, they were for the more casual fans, you know,
- 45:35Speaker 2: real boxing fans weren't really all about that because they
- 45:38Speaker 2: got all dressed up, went out and then all of
- 45:40Speaker 2: a sudden events over. But the difference is that Mike
- 45:44Speaker 2: Tyson had the skills, you know, he could back up
- 45:46Speaker 2: the talk of the hype like he was a very strong, skilled,
- 45:49Speaker 2: technically skilled fast fighter. Uh. And I think guys, I
- 45:54Speaker 2: think we all as an audience need to be wary
- 45:56Speaker 2: of somebody who wants to be the new Mike Tyson,
- 45:59Speaker 2: does it have all of the technical skills that he
- 46:02Speaker 2: brought to the table to the ring.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Rather Also, you got to realize, like this too, we
- 46:08Speaker 4: have biases towards fighters from certain parts of this country.
- 46:12Speaker 4: So if there's a guy from New York, no matter
- 46:13Speaker 4: what race, he is we're gonna hype them up, like,
- 46:16Speaker 4: we're gonna give them a lot of hype for whatever reason.
- 46:18Speaker 4: If they're from the East Coast, there's more boxing media
- 46:20Speaker 4: out there, there's more press in general, there's more boxing
- 46:25Speaker 4: venues and more boxing like for instance, like Philly, Baltimore, DC, Jersey,
- 46:32Speaker 4: New York. All those places have had events, like big
- 46:36Speaker 4: events and a lot of fighters from there. Their media
- 46:39Speaker 4: does very well with their athletes just in general, like
- 46:42Speaker 4: they really cover the sport well. They will pub him,
- 46:45Speaker 4: they'll hype them. The celebrities from there will go overboard
- 46:48Speaker 4: and hype their own guys out. It happens a lot,
- 46:51Speaker 4: happens a whole lot. So all that being said, we
- 46:54Speaker 4: kind of have to be wary all becaustomis from New
- 46:57Speaker 4: York or somebodys from Philly. That don't mean they a
- 46:59Speaker 4: great fine. That just means they have some celebrity fans
- 47:02Speaker 4: that like them. So we got to be very very careful.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Well, speaking of big hype fights that might not lift
- 47:10Speaker 2: up to the expectations, This Saturday, July nineteenth is the
- 47:15Speaker 2: big comeback of many pact YEA, we won't be getting
- 47:17Speaker 2: into the details. We talked about it in a couple
- 47:19Speaker 2: episodes back. Suffice to say, we're I'll say this, I'd
- 47:26Speaker 2: be very curious to see what shape many is in.
- 47:29Speaker 2: You know, we just talked about George Foreman. The man
- 47:31Speaker 2: was in his forties when he won a heavyweight title.
- 47:33Speaker 2: It is for a belt, it is for a title,
- 47:35Speaker 2: so it's not just a random little showcase. So I'm
- 47:37Speaker 2: taking it more seriously.
- 47:39Speaker 4: Than I would.
- 47:39Speaker 2: You know, the Mike Tyson come back from last year.
- 47:43Speaker 2: But let's get real, like, let's put it out there
- 47:45Speaker 2: right now. What do you think the results are going
- 47:47Speaker 2: to be? Jameson as I don't know.
- 47:51Speaker 4: It's hard picking a boxer in their forties when they
- 47:53Speaker 4: haven't fought in a while, especially when this is like
- 47:56Speaker 4: a cash grap It's not like he wants to keep fighting,
- 47:59Speaker 4: he wants to be a champion again, it's a cash grab.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Like if the fight wasn't for money, he wouldn't care
- 48:05Speaker 4: who has a belt. It's very very, very very difficult
- 48:09Speaker 4: to find out what kind of shape is in, but
- 48:12Speaker 4: also why is he fighting? Why? And we think about it,
- 48:18Speaker 4: why does any boxer fight when they're in their forties
- 48:21Speaker 4: because they're broke and or they need money, and to
- 48:24Speaker 4: be honest with you, I don't think he cares about
- 48:26Speaker 4: the wind of loss. I think he's there for the
- 48:28Speaker 4: pay day. So that's the case. I cannot bet on him.
- 48:31Speaker 4: I cannot take him. Could be surprised, could be shocked.
- 48:34Speaker 4: But he's been kind of washed for a while now,
- 48:38Speaker 4: and I think we see more washing this on Saturday.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Okay, well, I'm gonna go ahead and give the man
- 48:44Speaker 2: a little bit of credit and say that I'm not
- 48:46Speaker 2: gonna say that he's gonna win. I'm going to say
- 48:48Speaker 2: that it's going to go the distance, and Mario Barrios
- 48:51Speaker 2: is gonna take it by a decision. I don't know
- 48:54Speaker 2: if maybe you know, if Barrios are any other fighters
- 48:58Speaker 2: who are fighting the legend kind of that gets in
- 49:00Speaker 2: their heads and they're like, well, this guy has sure
- 49:02Speaker 2: he's Manny now, but it was also Manny then. I
- 49:05Speaker 2: don't know if that makes him a little gun shy,
- 49:07Speaker 2: But I think that if Manny's gonna come back, he's
- 49:11Speaker 2: not going to come back just kind of half asking it.
- 49:13Speaker 2: He's gonna try his best, whether he's washed or not.
- 49:16Speaker 2: I think he's going to go the distance, but I'm
- 49:17Speaker 2: still gonna give it to Bodios, so we'll see. I
- 49:19Speaker 2: have never Yeah, I've never been worried about being wrong
- 49:22Speaker 2: on this show or in life at any time. But
- 49:25Speaker 2: that's my solid prediction. So whether I'll bet on that,
- 49:29Speaker 2: I don't know. You know what, I think I might
- 49:32Speaker 2: start betting on draws just across the board, like putting
- 49:34Speaker 2: five bucks on draws every single fight because the odds
- 49:36Speaker 2: are so against it. I'm just gonna make something right.
- 49:38Speaker 4: I mean, it's like sometimes draws like twenty to one
- 49:41Speaker 4: the first Canelo Triple G fight, it was a draw
- 49:46Speaker 4: and a lot of people were mad because they bet
- 49:48Speaker 4: one or the other. But you're truly out of draw
- 49:51Speaker 4: just because of what you just said, so I understand completely.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that just might be my new thing.
- 49:56Speaker 2: I'm the draw guy. It's like always betting on black
- 49:59Speaker 2: but it's gonna be always bet on draws, right all right?
- 50:02Speaker 2: So well, when we come back, we're gonna talk about
- 50:04Speaker 2: the results of this fight and any other fights coming up.
- 50:06Speaker 2: So let's wrap this up. Jamison, Where can people find
