- 2:27he's sitting calmly and carefully chilling out, relaxing
- 2:31in his car as half our guests do that very, very much.
- 2:35We are now talking to former 13 year relief pitcher Jake McGee.
- 2:39Jake, what's up, buddy? How's it going?
- 2:42Thanks for having me. Absolutely.
- 2:44And I want to thank Nathan for, you know, landing us you, I know
- 2:48you're a busy guy, 13 years in the major leagues.
- 2:51Well, obviously you play for the Giants, an organization that has
- 2:56found ways to win and they they know how to find pitchers.
- 3:00Tell us a little bit about your time with the San Francisco
- 3:04Giants. Giants, It was really cool
- 3:08because we was living in Florida and we moved to Reno, NV has
- 3:12only three and a half, 4 hour drive to San Francisco.
- 3:16And luckily I was a free agent, went there and I actually played
- 3:20with the bullpen catcher or the bullpen coach who was there,
- 3:24Craig Alvarez. And now he's the bench coach for
- 3:27Stephen Vogt. And they had a really young
- 3:30staff and Andrew Bailey's a pitching coach there and it was
- 3:34great. They're really on top of their
- 3:36game and you'd send me videos of how many balls move in and
- 3:39highlights over after every game.
- 3:42So you played for a team early in your career that had one of
- 3:45the greatest regular season comebacks, the 2011 race.
- 3:47What was that run like getting into the playoffs the way they
- 3:50did and the Red Sox falling apart the way they did?
- 3:55That was probably one of the craziest games I've ever been a
- 3:57part of because I'm ever sitting in the bullpen and we were
- 4:00losing 7 nothing. I think Mark to share hit a
- 4:03Grand Slam off a off of David Price earlier in the game.
- 4:06We're like, ah, we're done, we're done.
- 4:07And then all of a sudden later in the game, we ended up tying
- 4:10the game and going extra innings and actually pitched that night,
- 4:13got the win. I pitched the night before and
- 4:15got the win. I don't even think I was going
- 4:16to pitch that night. But how it all worked out with
- 4:19like the fans seeing, seeing the other game lose and then
- 4:23Longoria literally hit the home run like not even a minute
- 4:26later. The whole stadium was crazy.
- 4:28Yeah, that was cool. Yeah.
- 4:29Thanks, Jake. Good reminder.
- 4:31Appreciate you, bud. Yeah, do you?
- 4:32Do you? Do you catch that game too?
- 4:34No, I no, I didn't. I didn't.
- 4:36I want to say Proctor gave it up.
- 4:37I believe yeah. Proctor was on the man.
- 4:40That was like his second stand after 840 appearances under
- 4:44Tori. But I mean, he ran him out there
- 4:46all the time. But no, I think it's always,
- 4:49it's always funny. Obviously we kind of came up
- 4:51together and played each other all the time.
- 4:54And so, but playing with like all the other teams, because
- 4:58you, you played for a little few more than I did.
- 5:00Like, did you take a piece from each team or did you just try to
- 5:05turn the page when you win it? Because I know sometimes it's
- 5:07hard to distinguish, especially when you play, you know, four or
- 5:10five years with the team to kind of, you know, break that cycle
- 5:13and that and kind of the, and it's always weird going into the
- 5:16visiting clubhouse when you've been on a team for that long.
- 5:18So did you take like a piece with each team or did you just
- 5:21try to turn the page and like and start over?
- 5:24I kind of took a piece with each team and then every team was a
- 5:28little different. Luckily, majority of teams were
- 5:31very heavy analytical, except for the Rockies.
- 5:34So they're still a little behind the curve a little bit with some
- 5:37of that. And but once I, once I got
- 5:40traded to the Rockies, I, you know, talked to the GM and Susan
- 5:45GM and we got kind of things moving with the analytical side
- 5:48and, you know, getting reps Otos and Trackman and kind of
- 5:52learning more of that. But I think from starting at
- 5:54Tampa, I had a super good building block.
- 5:57They'd give me my pitch movements, how to pitch, just
- 6:00use my fastball up in the zone. And then to by the end of my
- 6:02career, luckily I was able to play with the Dodgers and the
- 6:05Giants. And, you know, they run really
- 6:08good organizations, really good communication and trainers and,
- 6:11you know, keep guys healthy, you know, really well.
- 6:14We are talking to former 13 year vet relief pitcher Jake McGee.
- 6:19He pitched from 2010 to 2022 with the Rays, the Rockies, the
- 6:23Dodgers, the Giants, the Brewers, the Nationals, won a
- 6:26World Series with the Dodgers. As you know, he probably has a
- 6:30very beautiful ring that it keeps in a safe.
- 6:33You know Jake, the UCL tear is a very common injury right now for
- 6:37pitchers. A lot of people have been going
- 6:39back and forth and and arguing why some of these pitchers are
- 6:43having injuries like this. What do you think is the reason
- 6:47why these UCL terrorists have been so so so in so bad for
- 6:53baseball right now? I think with some of the guys,
- 6:56it's training with the heavier balls and the weighted balls.
- 6:59And if you've never really trained with it and your arm
- 7:03pass is already kind of set, and then you just try to throw
- 7:05heavier balls and you know, and then gain Velo and your body's
- 7:09not really used to gaining Velo that quick and your muscles
- 7:12aren't really used to it either, I feel like.
- 7:14And I think my biggest thing is I think you have to do your arm
- 7:17exercises before and after the game.
- 7:20But I think the biggest thing is the weight of balls and the
- 7:22training programs in those ways. And when you throw, when you're
- 7:26throwing 88 and all of a sudden you're throwing 94, you know,
- 7:29your UCL doesn't have time to catch up in that, in that amount
- 7:32of time, you know? So your your training program,
- 7:35the pitching performance Nevada that you have been running for a
- 7:37while now to what are some of the points of emphasis you have
- 7:40in that type of pitching program and do you think some of those
- 7:43concepts could be adopted to higher levels to make sure this
- 7:45doesn't happen as much? Yeah, definitely.
- 7:48It's when I started doing lessons.
- 7:50I've had a lot of kids to use like a water ball on the mound,
- 7:54using like lighter Med balls. And then we use plyos.
- 7:57We don't use the plyo over 8 ounces, so starting with the
- 8:01foundation that way. And my biggest thing I tell all
- 8:03the kids is do your arm bands before and after every time you
- 8:08throw off the mound. Do some kind of arm bands every
- 8:11time. I did that pretty much my whole
- 8:12career and luckily after I had my Tommy John, I only, I didn't
- 8:15have one shoulder, shoulder problem after that.
- 8:18And I think a lot of times the some of the kids they'll just
- 8:21throw off the mound and not do anything after.
- 8:24Yeah. Did you, did you think to like
- 8:28they're the misuse of it too. I'm, I'm not saying misuse, but
- 8:32overuse. Like not enough kids take a
- 8:36season off or they take time off because sometimes less is more.
- 8:40And do you think overuse and not resting is, is leading to that
- 8:44too? And I'm, I've never been a fan
- 8:45of weighted balls either. But yeah, do you think that's
- 8:47part of it too, that that helps into this or hurts in in this
- 8:51situation? Yeah, I think so for sure.
- 8:53I think it's usage and understanding how much you're
- 8:57throwing off the mound on all the weighted balls and all the
- 9:00other things you're doing. You listen to your body a lot of
- 9:02times and can't push it too hard.
- 9:04And if you're doing weight balls and then you're throwing a 45
- 9:06pitch bullpen, it's not good for your arm.
- 9:09And I think a lot of kids, they don't even take time off in the
- 9:12offseason if your arm if you don't build up enough and build
- 9:14up the right way and have the right, right throwing program
- 9:17too. Now obvious Trevor Bauer has
- 9:19been a big story for baseball over the last couple of years.
- 9:22And Trevor Bauer was a Cy Young winner.
- 9:25This guy has been a dominant pitcher.
- 9:27He went over there to Japan. He was a Cy Young.
- 9:30What he what? He was the best pitcher in
- 9:31Japan, in Mexico, He's the best pitcher in Mexico.
- 9:35He was, he was accused of something and then went to court
- 9:38and everything was dropped and, and baseball has not allowed him
- 9:42to come back. When you look at these stories
- 9:45and obviously who Trevor Bauer is, and I don't know him
- 9:48personally, maybe you know him, Jabba knows him.
- 9:51Obviously he's not too fond of him.
- 9:52Do you think baseball should allow Trevor Bauer to obviously
- 9:56come back to baseball and and have an opportunity to play
- 10:00professional baseball again in the major leagues?
- 10:03Well, well, I I don't know. I think they should let him come
- 10:06back. He wasn't really, you know, he
- 10:09didn't get convicted of anything.
- 10:10But I think sometimes in baseball and I've seen over the
- 10:13years, if something gets out to where a guy isn't most liked in
- 10:18the clubhouse and you know, a lot of the team, it's a culture
- 10:21in the whole clubhouse to where if then if all the G Ms. here at
- 10:25like 1 of the things I'd learned early in my career is try not to
- 10:28burn any bridges. And then when you burn a bridge,
- 10:30everyone talks to everyone from the clubhouse staff to the G Ms.
- 10:35and you know, like I've I've I'm kind of surprised that not a
- 10:39team one team hasn't like just given him a offer and brought
- 10:42him back. But I feel like the, you know,
- 10:44everyone together is probably on the same page.
- 10:46Like, no, let's not let him back in.
- 10:48And, you know, he was a big part of the bringing the media in the
- 10:51clubhouse and having his own own channel.
- 10:54And then with all the sticky stuff getting started like it,
- 10:58there was just a lot going on in that situation with him.
- 11:01If you were AGM right now for that organization, you were AGM
- 11:06for an organization right now and you needed a pitcher, you
- 11:08need a starting pitcher and he's available, would you dig deep
- 11:14and bring him to your organization, no matter how much
- 11:16backlash you would get it from the media or somebody else from
- 11:21the organization, Would you actually dig deep and actually
- 11:24bring him to your organization if you have a chance to make the
- 11:26playoffs? Well, no, I don't.
- 11:29I don't think so, honestly, because it, I was saying
- 11:31earlier, like baseball's such a culture.
- 11:33And when there's too many distraction, it, it can and it
- 11:37messes with five or six of your guys on your roster, you know,
- 11:40it can throw you into a losing streak, you know, And it's, I
- 11:44don't know if that'd be best for an organization.
- 11:46And bringing a lot of noise and distraction is, you know, I've
- 11:49learned is usually not the best and any, any pro sport really.
- 11:54So a lot of the new rules that have come out in baseball
- 11:56recently, obviously after the lockout, I think your last year
- 11:58in MLB was after the lockout that year after and the first
- 12:01year of the pitch clock was right after that.
- 12:03So what are your thoughts on some of those, the pitch clock,
- 12:05the three batter minimum, stuff like that?
- 12:07I don't really mind if 3 batter minimum too much earlier in a
- 12:10career job I probably knows too. It was getting out of hand
- 12:14sometimes when you'd have the lefty in and the next area you
- 12:17bring in the righty and you know is at least the three batter
- 12:21minimum. You know, it teaches a lot of
- 12:23guys in big leagues to learn how to use their pitches against
- 12:26lefties and righties. And then the pitch clock.
- 12:29I feel like they should add a couple more seconds because I
- 12:32feel like I would have had a hard time with the time that is
- 12:35now because I always look down and look up and get my sign and
- 12:39you know, I feel like I would I'd be rushed a little too much.
- 12:43I think that could have should be adjusted by a couple more
- 12:45seconds. For me too, I think adding a
- 12:48couple seconds too. And as you being left-handed,
- 12:51you guys cheat because you can actually stare at the runner.
- 12:54And so for me it was like playing the game of cat and
- 12:57mouse. Like can I hold?
- 12:58And then now I get it's hard enough to get guys outlet alone.
- 13:02Like OK, I disengaged the rubber just to step off.
- 13:04Then I picked OK, now I either have to pick them off and then
- 13:07it's like, OK, I got to go. I got to look at the clock and I
- 13:10think they should add I was a guy that worked fast.
- 13:13Anyways, when it comes to that situation, why do you think
- 13:16stolen bases are up? They made the bags bigger than
- 13:19they've they've done stuff like this.
- 13:21But I'd like your opinion on, you know, there was there was a
- 13:23pitch today that was literally right down the middle and he
- 13:25called it a ball. What is your feeling on ABS as
- 13:30far as I'm an old school guy? Like I love the umpires, but
- 13:34it's getting ridiculous on some of these things.
- 13:36And, and you know as well as I do being in in meetings with our
- 13:39Pennsylvania and, and how umpires are not held
- 13:42responsible. Like they don't have to answer
- 13:43questions, but when it's getting to this point in your house,
- 13:46they don't have to. Do you think that's a good thing
- 13:48or bad thing for baseball? It's a good thing because I when
- 13:50I was rehabbing a AAA for a couple games because they've had
- 13:54ABS there a while and there's one inning where I didn't even
- 13:56know they're using it. I had a good inning, but during
- 13:58the inning I asked where, where pitch was like the umpire and
- 14:02he's like, I don't know. And I was like, why do you say I
- 14:04don't know, like and they're like, oh, they don't give them
- 14:07like the exact pitch locations in triple AI guess.
- 14:10So I was like, I have no idea. But I think that ABS how it runs
- 14:15in AAA and seeing some of that, it runs really smooth and it's
- 14:18you know, it's a cool visual for the fans too, to see it up on
- 14:21the Jumbotron and like seeing where the pitch misses.
- 14:24But like you were saying about the accountability for all the
- 14:27umpires, there's so many of them who if you try to talk to them,
- 14:31they're rude back to you. You can't even ask them
- 14:33anything. And they're never held
- 14:34accountable even if they blow a call.
- 14:36So I think this will work, and I'm glad that they're not
- 14:39rushing it into the big leagues, like if they would have put it
- 14:41in this year or even next year. So at least they'll have two
- 14:45years of spring training to use it, get used to it, and then
- 14:49then be implemented from there. But I think accountability for
- 14:51the umpires will be big in that way.
- 14:52Steroids has really been a problem when it came to the
- 14:56major leagues, and a lot of guys are not in the Hall of Fame.
- 14:59Alex Rodriguez will never see the Hall of Fame.
- 15:01Mark McGuire, obviously. David Ortiz is in the Hall of
- 15:04Fame. Jeff Bagwell is in the Hall of
- 15:06Fame. Mike Piazza is in Hall of Fame.
- 15:08Because they were, even though a lot of people believe they want
- 15:10steroids, there was no proof, obviously.
- 15:13Do you think that guys like Barry Bonds?
- 15:15Roger Clemens and some of these other guys should be in the Hall
- 15:18of Fame and should have like an asterisk on their name, don't
- 15:22you believe? I mean, I believe it.
- 15:24We've asked a lot of ex players and even players in a league
- 15:27should these guys be in the Hall of Fame?
- 15:29Do you believe guys like that should be in the Hall of Fame?
- 15:32Yeah, I, I agree. I think they should be in the
- 15:34Hall of Fame, you know, because back then it wasn't really
- 15:37regulated as much. And, you know, it sounded like
- 15:41everyone was doing it and it wasn't regulated.
- 15:44And I think just the talent and how hard baseball is and all the
- 15:49numbers those guys put up, like Barry Bonds year is what he put
- 15:52up is ridiculous. And you know, even before he was
- 15:55accused of terror rights, he was probably would have been a Hall
- 15:57of Famer. And then with Rodger Clemens
- 16:00and, you know, it's I think those guys are those accolades.
- 16:04A lot of them aren't, you know, a lot of people aren't even
- 16:06gonna catch some of those records.
- 16:07So I feel like to where, you know, I feel like they should be
- 16:09in the Hall of Fame. They shouldn't, you know,
- 16:11shouldn't wait too long to try to put him, put him in, you
- 16:13know. The media shouldn't have choice
- 16:15on who goes to the Hall of Fame, who doesn't.
- 16:17Players should. Your peers should vote you in
- 16:19the Hall of Fame. Don Mattingly should be in the
- 16:20Hall of Fame. I know he didn't have that long
- 16:23career, 13 years because of his back injury.
- 16:26Albert Bell should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 16:28The numbers that he was putting up.
- 16:29And then you have other guys. Tony Larusso was on the
- 16:32committee, obviously allowed to go to the Hall of Fame.
- 16:35I The problem right now in baseball is there has to be some
- 16:38kind of control and the players should have a say.
- 16:41The media, if they don't like somebody, they couldn't
- 16:44interview them or they just didn't like their attitude, they
- 16:47didn't obviously vote them in the Hall of Fame.
- 16:49Jorge Posada, this is one of the best catchers of the last 25
- 16:53years. How many votes did he get?
- 16:55I think he didn't even get. I don't even think I had 3% of
- 16:57the votes and he was right off the ballot.
- 17:00Jeff Kent. How many second basemen were as
- 17:02good as Jeff Kent? Because he wasn't light or his
- 17:06notoriety as far as his peers, He wasn't inducted into the Hall
- 17:10of Fame. He was.
- 17:10I think he was out of the picture, what, within like two
- 17:13or three years after he had his opportunity to be on that list.
- 17:16Why do you think these players are still not in the Hall of
- 17:20Fame? I think they should, you know,
- 17:21eventually change it a little bit.
- 17:23It shouldn't be all, all, all up to the writers.
- 17:26I think the players should have some part in it and then after
- 17:29when they follow the ballot, then do the people who are
- 17:32inducted vote. They can vote it in after.
- 17:34I don't know the exact. They changed the rules the.
- 17:38Rules about it, right? Yeah, they came all the time,
- 17:40but I think. Yeah, now it's the commit, the
- 17:42committee vote if you've gone past.
- 17:44Yeah, yeah. And I feel like some of those
- 17:45guys should have been in there because you see, you know, the
- 17:48other Hall of Fames, they induct tons of people in there.
- 17:50And I feel like baseball, they're super limited and very
- 17:53picky. Oh, you're saying the media, if
- 17:54you pissed off the media in your career, you have no chance of
- 17:57being in the Hall of Fame. That's for sure.
- 17:59So my last question now, you got to go soon, Dodgers you won a
- 18:02championship with in 2020 during the pandemic year.
- 18:04So what was that year like? And now a lot of people saying
- 18:06the Dodgers ruining baseball with this deferred money and all
- 18:09the big contracts they've given now, what are your thoughts to
- 18:11that? She's being paid.
- 18:15No, I'm just kidding. In 2020, that was probably the
- 18:17weirdest years ever. And people say it was like, oh,
- 18:21it was like quarter of a quarter of a year.
- 18:23Like, not really a real like earned championship, but what we
- 18:28had to go through as players and our families and during the
- 18:30season, we had to do spit tests every day and our families
- 18:33couldn't really go have a normal life because then if they got
- 18:37COVID and I got COVID, you know, it was really hard.
- 18:39And when we were in Texas, we are just hotel in the field,
- 18:42hotel in the field. And we were there for almost 40
- 18:44days and very stressful. But in the end, winning the
- 18:46World Series is great. And then your second part of the
- 18:49question, I think the Dodgers are just using the system the
- 18:54right way and they've built a really good culture there and
- 18:57everything from their trainers to their coaches and everything.
- 19:00And you doing it the right way. And all, all other 29 teams can
- 19:03be doing the same thing, using more deferred money, building
- 19:06their culture a little differently and bringing in
- 19:08people. And I think overall, I think as
- 19:10a player, I'm sure Java would agree to to where, you know, if
- 19:13there's great culture and great trainers and coaching staff
- 19:16like, and you're getting paid well and you can have a chance
- 19:19to win a World Series, you know, they're going to keep getting a
- 19:21lot of players. Yeah, and I mean, that's the
- 19:23funny part that people don't realize.
- 19:25Like Deferred, he's been happening for years.
- 19:27It's just not to the standard of realm that it's going right now.
- 19:30But I always like putting people on the spot because, you know,
- 19:32you play for different teams. You have to have a favorite.
- 19:34I know there's always like, oh, you're, you know, your first
- 19:38ever appearance, your first ever call up your World Series like,
- 19:41and we we both kind of experienced it.
- 19:43What was your best experience? A single experience or a
- 19:46favorite team with experiences. I mean, I'm going to say I
- 19:49experienced a lot of good times with your Rays teams.
- 19:51Yeah, I mean Tampa by far was probably is my favorite team
- 19:55overall and I learned so much from they would bring in
- 19:59veterans my first couple years. I remember playing with Johnny
- 20:01Damon and Manny Ramirez one of their first years and having
- 20:04called Kyle Farnsworth in the bullpen and.
- 20:07You know, Grant Balfour and, you know, learning from those guys
- 20:11helped me play as long as I did in my career.
- 20:13And, you know, he's picking their brain and learning in that
- 20:15way. And we're in Tampa, we're in the
- 20:18playoffs pretty much every year. And I was very lucky my first
- 20:21five years playing with, you know, competing to go to the
- 20:24playoffs every year. It was really awesome.
- 20:26You know, Jake, you mentioned Kyle Fondsworth.
- 20:28Have you seen what he looks like now?
- 20:30Oh yeah, I think last time I was a Tampa I saw him and he's been
- 20:33playing semi Pro Football in Orlando.
- 20:36He went from retired to the MVP of the league because he was
- 20:39bored and he's a black belt. Two different like martial arts.
- 20:43Yeah, I saw his son in Tampa a couple years ago and asked him
- 20:46about him. He's like, yeah, like he did the
- 20:48Pro Football thing and, you know, now he's like trying to be
- 20:52more of a bodybuilder now He's so.
- 20:55Big human. He's always been that shredded.
- 20:58Oh yeah, his whole career, yeah, he's always been that shredded.
- 21:02He definitely he looks like Zoo. Who do you think has the
- 21:04nastiest stuff pitch wise? I would say Paul Skeens.
- 21:08And then I think just I've seen how he works and the work he
- 21:13puts in and just all of his pitches and how they move.
- 21:15And he seems like a guy who's going to keep adapting with the
- 21:19game and want to get better and better.
- 21:20And you know, his stuff just blows everyone away and how many
- 21:23pitches he has is really nasty. But the young kid with the
- 21:26Brewers is when he gets more under his belt because I've
- 21:30heard, I've talked to other pitching guys and they said his
- 21:32extension is like the farthest in baseball because he's so tall
- 21:37and he throws 102. So they're like, he's going to
- 21:40be really, really good. It doesn't make any sense.
- 21:42You're 64, Jabba 6 and they got Kyle Farnsworth.
- 21:45Anyways, Jake, we really appreciate the.
- 21:47Time I got one. One question for Jabba.
- 21:49Go ahead, I'll see if he remembers this.
- 21:51What do we got? Remember, if we're playing
- 21:53against each other in high and it's got to be the most track
- 21:57case you ever had in one game in the minor leagues, our team was
- 22:00not that good and I think you had like 16 or 18 strikeouts
- 22:04against us and threw like 8 innings.
- 22:06Oh, you guys were in. First of all, we're.
- 22:07In Vero Beach. Yeah, Vero Beach it was.
- 22:09Hot. Yeah.
- 22:10So yeah. Yeah, I think, I think I had 16.
- 22:14Like, I just remember like we had that bootleg auxiliary
- 22:17locker room had to walk over summers in Florida.
- 22:20Team strikeouts. Yeah, Vero Beach, their fence,
- 22:23their outfield fence was like 3 1/2 feet too.
- 22:25Yep. Yeah.
- 22:26And we didn't have like and the dugouts were small.
- 22:29We didn't have no awning or anything like I think.
- 22:32No talk to the dugouts either. Yeah, yeah.
- 22:34No talking. I went in and and tried to cool
- 22:37off. Yeah, I do remember that one.
- 22:39That place sucked. Yeah, that was brutal.
- 22:42Well, Jake, I know you're busy, hopefully next on Station Place,
- 22:46but we know you're busy and we really.
- 22:47Appreciate. Yeah, no, that sounds good.
- 22:49Yeah, no, Mondays are probably my busiest days.
- 22:51Other other days should work pretty well.
- 22:53So just yeah, just reach out and I'll, I'll come out again
- 22:56sometime. Absolutely, we appreciate it
- 22:58because I know you're busy. Imani gave us the time.
- 23:00We really appreciate. It Yeah, they have a daughter's
- 23:02team dragging the field right now they're just finishing up
- 23:05softball practice so there you. Go, man.
- 23:07You're a girl, Dad. Yeah.
- 23:08All right, Jake, Thank. You, man.
- 23:11Good to see you, Jake. Good to see.
- 23:12You. Jake Mickey, ladies and
- 23:15gentlemen, I thought he gave us some really good information.
- 23:17UCL. We talked about the umpires, the
- 23:21different rule changes. We talked about the Hall of
- 23:24Fame. We talked about steroids.
- 23:26Anyways, we call this Speedy 6 Pack of the day.
- 23:31Let's have a sixer. Hey, who wants to play Drink the
- 23:34Beer? It's time for the Speedy 6 pack
- 23:37of the week. All right, Speedy, this is the
- 23:43deal. You got six stories in baseball
- 23:45to go over, you're going to read them off and we're going to get
- 23:48one person to comment on them after the.
- 23:50First fish is not a panty dropper.
- 23:52Get the music on starting off with.
- 23:55A lovely saying. So the big news of the day, Java
- 23:58texted it in the group chat. Emmanuel Class A is on
- 24:01administrative leave, connected to betting.
- 24:03His teammate Luis Ortiz, so they just traded for this offseason,
- 24:05also connected as well. The seventh player to be caught
- 24:08with gambling 1. Of them I need a blow pop.
- 24:11And the first All Star caliber player.
- 24:13So blowjob. So job, I'll let you.
- 24:16Take this, but you were the. One who broke it?
- 24:17What are your thoughts? Yeah, well I mean he's an idiot.
- 24:20They now that everybody goes in he's out till at least the 31st
- 24:25of August and Luis Ortiz has been out for at least be two
- 24:28months and now they're going back and showing his non
- 24:31competitive pitches in an OO count with nobody on in the 9th
- 24:36inning and it's been 20. I think it was 25.2% and when it
- 24:42was runners on and he needed an out, it was like less than 5.8%
- 24:48out of the zone. And it literally like it just
- 24:52makes it super obvious and why these guys are I have no idea
- 24:56what they're thinking or like why or you're already getting
- 25:00paid a buttload of money. What could this possibly do to
- 25:03and and you know, you know, the ramifications of betting like
- 25:07this isn't a secret. I don't get why they keep doing
- 25:12it, getting caught or like even entertaining the fact of what it
- 25:15is. Like if you're betting on
- 25:16football with a buddy or whatever, yeah, that's one
- 25:19thing. But I'm not saying he was
- 25:22betting on his game. Don't know.
- 25:24It's just this he's on administrative paid leave.
- 25:27So really like, what is it doing?
- 25:30I just, it makes zero sense to me why these guys are still
- 25:32doing it. It's frustrating because it
- 25:34makes the game of baseball look bad And, and for guys that, you
- 25:38know, respect and treat the game with dignity.
- 25:41And it just, it just makes it look bad for for a lot of us
- 25:45that that are still playing and, and played before and, and will
- 25:48play after. #5. Big performance of the weekend.
- 25:53The Nick Kurtz of the A's, A rookie tied for the most in MLB
- 25:57history with 19 total bases, tied with Sean Green 1 of 20
- 26:01players ever hit four home runs in the game in the first rookie
- 26:04to do that. As such, I thought it was
- 26:08incredible. First of all, I think he's one
- 26:10of the best young players we've seen.
- 26:12The A's have and the A's always find these guys and then wind up
- 26:16gone after their arbitration. They can't hold on to these
- 26:19guys. This guy has a tremendous amount
- 26:21of talent, tremendous amount of power.
- 26:23And over there in Oakland, I I mean the stadium is, is huge.
- 26:27I mean you're hitting bopping home runs like that.
- 26:29Joanna suspicious. Remember when they took a
- 26:31chance, we going to suspicious the other ones that brought them
- 26:34from Cuba and look what I think it was Cuba right you and it
- 26:37says and, and look what he turned out to be the ace.
- 26:40Get these guys, they transition, they become superstar players
- 26:44and then they trade them away pitchers, great players and then
- 26:47they go to other teams and win World Series or help teams get
- 26:51to the World Series. I I think this kids special.
- 26:54I think this kids going to be 1 hell of a player and 6 for six,
- 26:58four home runs in a game at 22 years old.
- 27:00I, I, I don't think you see this every single day.
- 27:03So it was absolutely incredible. And I, I think this kid will be
- 27:06a Yankee in the future or maybe a red sock or a met.
- 27:09I mean, that's where he's going. If he turns out to be a
- 27:12superstar player and he puts up these kind of numbers every
- 27:15single year. You keep shaking your heads,
- 27:17Mike, he's going to Vegas. He's not, he's going to get
- 27:20signed. He's definitely not the A's that
- 27:24that the same organization. They're the same organization,
- 27:27same owner. They're not resigning With
- 27:29Vegas, absolutely. It's his first year in the
- 27:31league. He's going to be on the they
- 27:33never. It's more years.
- 27:34That's fine. And voter a contract.
- 27:36They gave Butler a contract. You want to bet?
- 27:40You want to bet He doesn't stay with.
- 27:42Yeah, He's not. He's not staying with the.
- 27:45He's not staying with the. He's definitely.
- 27:47What's the bet? We'll figure it out.
- 27:49I want to know now. I'm like, Mike, just zipper your
- 27:52mouth. What do you think you're going
- 27:53to do this live? When I think of it, I mean, I'm
- 27:55hosting a damn show. You want me to think, Hey, you
- 27:57know what? What's the bet, Mike?
- 27:59You stick your thumb up your ass on live radio.
- 28:01How about that? All right, You do it right now.
- 28:04Yeah. I mean, you're probably stink
- 28:06stick. Who knows?
- 28:07You'll probably stick fucking cookies up your ass every single
- 28:09day. You eat it Every time I munch.
- 28:12There it goes. All right.
- 28:14That's OK, we're not up to #2 yet, but number. 4.
- 28:18Cephaluga, who many people thought would be traded,
- 28:20actually signs an extension with the Royals.
- 28:23Traditional stats say he's been done well. 2.5 ERA, one point O
- 28:268 WHIP, but his advanced stats fielding independent pitching
- 28:294.27, a lot like Luis Severino and 9th worst among qualified
- 28:33starters with a 46% hard hit rate.
- 28:36You want to jerk me off? This guy with former Met, you
- 28:40know that he had he was the Cy Young, the Royals not having a
- 28:44great season and they're going to pay this guy to pay play for
- 28:48them for another couple years. I got to show you these advanced
- 28:51stats from Baseball Savant here and.
- 28:53This is my way. If you're going to use advanced
- 28:55stats, this is the place you should be going.
- 28:58It's real simple to read. Blue bad, red good.
- 29:03Not a lot of red. Statistics.
- 29:05Errol, I'm trying to make it as simple for you as possible.
- 29:08Blue bad, red good. You see one thing in light red
- 29:14for him on the entire chart, which means they're saying his
- 29:18great. Stats are good.
- 29:20Of a 295 ERA. I have no sack.
- 29:24Seven and five record. He should be at 455 ERA.
- 29:28People should be hitting 260 off of him.
- 29:29He only throws 91 1/2 miles an hour.
- 29:32He is an average pitcher and he just got paid.
- 29:36Good for him. Well, don't you look at it,
- 29:39don't you look at it to where because Kansas City's been
- 29:42everybody else's farm system that this is actually somebody
- 29:45to help with their younger kids in their rotation.
- 29:47So they kind of paid him to stay.
- 29:48He has done well regardless of that graph you just showed us.
- 29:52And I I'm not sitting there saying he's a great pitcher, but
- 29:55he's quality. I I would say that graph says
- 29:58he's worth half as much as he got paid, but you're not wrong.
- 30:03He's 35, he's been around the league.
- 30:04He's certainly an important veteran presence.
- 30:07Maybe they're paying him for that, but it shouldn't be for
- 30:10the numbers that I. Mean, I agree.
- 30:13I mean, if I'm Kansas City, I would have traded him, but I'm
- 30:15just saying maybe he doesn't want to leave.
- 30:16He found the home there. He's been successful and they
- 30:19have kids coming through this system.
- 30:21Breaking news. 1st is about old man Speedy. #3.
- 30:25All right, the Braves entire starting rotation from opening
- 30:29day is now injured. A couple out for the year, so
- 30:32here's one, but minus Ronaldo Lopez who pitched in four-game
- 30:35one game, so he doesn't count those 4 pitchers that are.
- 30:38Hurt right now. 3.34 ERA Everyone else who started a game
- 30:42this year for the Braves. 5 point. 3 ERA Droba.
- 30:47The the Braves are a debacle. I mean, it's it's hurt them for
- 30:53a couple years now. It's just I would I wanted to
- 30:56dive deeper into that when I saw that come up early to see when
- 31:00the last time all five guys from from literally the opening day 5
- 31:07are not. And I mean, we're 100 games in a
- 31:09little 100 games, but are all hurt.
- 31:12I mean, it sucks. I know it's part of the game,
- 31:14but to have it all accumulate into one, I mean, you might as
- 31:17well just open up the cut and just pour a bunch of salt.
- 31:20I'll let you because my butt, that stinks.
- 31:24Spencer Schreider came back and he hasn't been very good.
- 31:27He's got 2 miles an hour off his fastball.
- 31:29He's pitched tonight. He's just not the same guy right
- 31:31now. He's probably going to need a
- 31:32year to recover. I wouldn't get back to he's on
- 31:34fire. So the Braves suck right now,
- 31:36Speedy. #2. So some more Phillies taking
- 31:40shots at the MLB fraud office. This time it's Bryce Harper and
- 31:43Nick Cassianos. Bryce Harper cussing out Rob
- 31:45Manford over the idea of a salary cap and Nick Cassianos
- 31:48also taking shots at Manford, saying he's desperate to get
- 31:51this cap in place. This is the same Bryce Harper
- 31:53that took shots the MLB umpires last year, too.
- 31:55And Cassianos, we know, love. He likes to speak.
- 31:58I I honestly believe there should be a salary cap.
- 32:01Well, because I think every single sport has a salary cap.
- 32:04Why should the sport just keep driving?
- 32:06So you're telling me, yeah, absolutely.
- 32:08What we're going to see the first billion dollar player,
- 32:10you're going to tell me right now when you see guys like Soto
- 32:14get what, $678 million or whatever, $768 million, the next
- 32:19guy, the next big superstar that's going to become available
- 32:22is going to get a billion. It's over these guys, it's over
- 32:24saturated. These guys are making too much
- 32:26money. I I just think it's ridiculous.
- 32:28The fact that that Manfred with the CBA when, when the CBA
- 32:32becomes when, when's it going to be up 22,000 2020?
- 32:36626. 26 There has to be some kind of and I know the players
- 32:40union is going to fight this all the way to the end, but if
- 32:43basketball is doing it, the NHL is doing it and the NFL is doing
- 32:46it, there has to be something. They got to do something because
- 32:50it's getting out of hand. We're eventually you got guys
- 32:54deferred money. Otani Otani's not even He's
- 32:57making one $2,000,000 from the Dodgers until 12 years when he's
- 33:01not even playing in the league anymore and he's still making
- 33:03what, $102,000,000 a year with endorsements?
- 33:07It's ridiculous. There has to be something the.
- 33:10Leader, why do you want these these oil tycoons and tech guys
- 33:14to keep that money? Because that's who's going to
- 33:16keep it If you don't give it to the players, don't.
- 33:18Why not give them the market value?
- 33:19Who cares if the tech guys? Don't over don't over stop these
- 33:23these all these fans that are going to ball games and spending
- 33:26four, $500 help the fans out, lower the prices, lower the
- 33:30ticket prices. I mean, honestly, to me, fans
- 33:33are spending too much money to go to games.
- 33:36I, I see, I, I had a friend recently go to a game with his
- 33:40two kids. He said he spent $680 for three
- 33:44tickets and food for the whole day.
- 33:46Is that fair to the fan? They're spending the day at the
- 33:49ballpark and spending that kind of money because it's going into
- 33:52the players pockets and the owners pockets.
- 33:54So if you don't, if you're saying that it shouldn't go to
- 33:56the owners, it shouldn't go here, then cut the prices and
- 34:00make it fair for the fans so everybody can go to a ball game.
- 34:03It's unaffordable. It's unaffordable.
- 34:06I just, I'd just rather side with millionaires than
- 34:08billionaires. I don't know.
- 34:11It's just unaffordable and these speedies are making so much
- 34:13money. Number one, alright.
- 34:15We'll finish it off with the Hall of Fame.
- 34:17Congratulations to all the inductees.
- 34:18I'll give one a little bit on each of them.
- 34:20Dave Parker, one of 14 players to win batting champions and
- 34:24back-to-back years. Dick Allen for the White Sox had
- 34:26a 212 our bat which is 1972, which is higher than the career
- 34:31highs of Frank Thomas, Dan Musial and Hank Aaron.
- 34:33Billy Wagner long overdue 703 games finish which is 6 all time
- 34:38and doing it in 186 less innings than Trevor Hoffman was the next
- 34:41lowest each row. Only player to have 10
- 34:44consecutive 200 hit seasons and CC Sabathia the fourth fastest
- 34:483000 strikeouts. Thoughts of these Hall of Fame
- 34:51guys? Oh, it's, it's great.
- 34:53Speeches were unbelievable. Dave Parker's son reading the
- 34:56poem at the end was absolutely awesome.
- 34:59Love how he just took his jacket off because it was, it looked
- 35:01like it was roasting CC just dripping onto his onto his
- 35:05thing. Ichiro, you know, shouting out
- 35:08the dude that that didn't didn't vote for him.
- 35:11And I guess the dude recognized himself on Twitter as the guy
- 35:17that didn't vote for him. He was like Ichiro mentioned me
- 35:20in his in his speech and you know, will Allen just, you know,
- 35:24saying, you know, how great, first of all, he swung a 42
- 35:29ounce back. Do you realize how ridiculous
- 35:31that is? That's stupid.
- 35:34And then how the relationship that he created with that kid,
- 35:37that kid now is 7 years old and was able to be there.
- 35:40And you know, I, I, it was just, it was, it was awesome.
- 35:43I I love watching it and sitting.
- 35:45I mean, it's, it's one of my favorite days other than opening
- 35:47day, watching those guys and families.
- 35:49I'd like, I'd like to know how much, how much weight CC
- 35:53actually lost standing there and sweating his butt off.
- 35:56I mean, he's not eating Captain Crunch anymore.
- 35:58And the Crunch Berries. So, man, he was, I was, I was
- 36:01talking to his cousin as it was going and I'm like, man, and I
- 36:06was like, he has a towel. Like nobody cares if you're
- 36:08sweating. Like just use your towel.
- 36:09Like he kept trying to do this and it kept tripping.
- 36:12That shirt was being sweat through immediately.
- 36:15Oh, that jacket was breaking news.
- 36:17I want to hit it. But it was it was great.
- 36:20I loved it. It's it's one of my favorite
- 36:21times of the year, bringing those guys back and, you know,
- 36:24seeing all, all of them and and very well deserving.
- 36:26And Billy being who he was and how he learned to throw
- 36:30left-handed because he's not naturally left-handed.
- 36:32And you know, first one, first left-hander to never start a
- 36:36game to, to be in the Hall of Fame is pretty cool.
- 36:39And it was really cool just hearing their speeches.
- 36:42And hats off to Ichiro. Like, I knew it as a teammate,
- 36:46but hats off to him from doing it all in English.
- 36:48It was. It was really cool to see.
- 36:50I hope not. You know.
- 36:53Ichiro's joke, They said like, I didn't even know the Miami
- 36:56Marlins were a team before you offered me a job.
- 37:00He was great. He like, people don't realize
- 37:02how funny he is. He like.
- 37:04He was hilarious. I got to play right field with
- 37:06him every day. And the stuff that he said to me
- 37:10that I can't say it, it absolutely blew up because you
- 37:14see him at like I faced him and obviously as a baseball fan, it
- 37:18was, it was the the worst at bat ever.
- 37:20I hated facing him. It sucked because it was like,
- 37:23you know, he's not going to strike out, he's just going to
- 37:25put in play, blah, blah, blah. Drama likes my cocktail.
- 37:30Get to know him and, and just just how fun and put how
- 37:34meticulous he is about, you know, just certain things.
- 37:37Me and and Brian Hoke, we're going through stories of Ichiro
- 37:41and just, you know, he would, he would lint roll in front of his
- 37:44locker, then put a towel down, then he would stretch and just
- 37:46everything was so precise and he was just an absolute.
- 37:50I mean, crazy to think I got to play with two Hall of farmers on
- 37:54the same team and share a clubhouse with them was.
- 37:56Was really You want my creampie? All right, time to recycle the
- 38:00cans. Speedy up.
