- Lucas: Welcome back to another episode of Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. We are so glad you are here again. It feels like we have been on quite the journey together. Lucas: It really has. We have visited the beach, tried on clothes, got haircuts, and even cooked in the kitchen. But today, we are changing the scene completely. Luna: Oh, I know where this is going. We are going somewhere quiet. Somewhere with culture. A museum! Lucas: Exactly. Museums are wonderful places to practice Cantonese because the atmosphere is calm. You speak softly, you observe carefully, and you learn a lot. Let us start with why we are there. Luna: To see the art! That is the main reason. In Cantonese, how do I say 'I want to see the exhibition'? Lucas: The phrase is: 我想睇展. I will say it slowly for you. 我. 想. 睇. 展. 我想睇展. Luna: Okay. 我. 想. 睇. 展. 我想睇展. That means 'I want to see the exhibition'? Lucas: Yes. 睇 means to look or watch, and 展 is short for exhibition. So 我想睇展 is perfect for when you buy your ticket or talk to a friend at the entrance. Luna: Right. So if I walk up to the ticket counter, I can just say 我想睇展. Let me try that again. 我想睇展. Lucas: Spot on. And once you are inside, you will see many pieces of art. Some might be paintings. If you see one you love, what do you say? Luna: I should compliment it! How do I say 'This painting is very beautiful'? Lucas: You would say: 呢幅畫好靚. Let's break that down. 呢幅 is the classifier for flat objects like paintings. 畫 means painting. 好靚 means very beautiful. Listen closely. 呢. 幅. 畫. 好. 靚. 呢幅畫好靚. Luna: Hmm. 呢幅畫好靚. This painting is very beautiful. I love that structure. It sounds so polite. Lucas: It is. Using 呢幅 makes you sound specific and attentive. You are not just looking; you are noticing details. Try it with me. 呢幅畫好靚. Luna: 呢幅畫好靚. Oh, I really mean it too. It looks amazing. Okay, Lucas, now I am curious. Can I take a picture of it? Lucas: A great question. Rules vary by museum. To ask politely, you say: 可以影相嗎. Here, 可以 means may or can. 影相 means to take a photo. 嗎 makes it a question. Listen: 可. 以. 影. 相. 嗎. 可以影相嗎. Luna: Okay. 可以影相嗎. May I take a photo? I hope the answer is yes. Sometimes museums say no, but it is good to ask first. Lucas: Always ask. Respect the rules. Now, imagine you are enjoying the exhibit, but you notice the lights getting dim. The museum is closing soon. How do you ask when it ends? Luna: That is practical. I don't want to get kicked out unexpectedly. How do I say 'When does the exhibition end'? Lucas: You say: 展覽幾時結束. 展覽 is the full word for exhibition. 幾時 means when. 結束 means to end or finish. Listen slowly. 展. 覽. 幾. 時. 結. 束. 展覽幾時結束. Luna: 展覽幾時結束. When does the exhibition end? Got it. And if I need to find the restroom or the exit, I need to ask for directions. Lucas: Yes. In a large museum, things can be far apart. To ask 'Where is it?', you use: 請係邊度. 請 is a polite marker, often used before a request. 係 means at or is. 邊度 means where. Listen: 請. 係. 邊. 度. 請係邊度. Luna: 請係邊度. Where is it? Polite and clear. So if I am lost, I can point and ask 請係邊度. It feels very natural. Lucas: It is. Let us review our five phrases for today. First, to enter: 我想睇展. Second, to compliment: 呢幅畫好靚. Third, to ask about photos: 可以影相嗎. Fourth, to check time: 展覽幾時結束. And fifth, to ask location: 請係邊度. Luna: Wow, those cover everything I would need. I feel ready to visit the Hong Kong Museum of History tomorrow. Or any museum, really. Lucas: That is the goal. Small phrases make big differences. When you use them, locals appreciate your effort. It opens doors, literally and figuratively. Luna: I agree. It changes the interaction from just staring at things to actually connecting with the space. Thanks for teaching me these, Lucas. Lucas: Anytime, Luna. And thank you to our listeners for practicing along. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we want to share something important with you. Luna: Yeah. We keep these episodes ad-free and consistent because of people like you. Even a small monthly contribution makes a real difference. Lucas: It helps us keep the servers running, hire better voices, and create more content just like this. If you want to support us, visit buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Just a couple of dollars a month goes a long way. It genuinely keeps the show alive and growing. Thank you for considering it. Lucas: We appreciate every bit of support. Now, back to the museum. Imagine you just asked 請係邊度, and the guard points you toward the gift shop. Luna: Oh, nice. I was hoping for the restroom, but maybe I can grab a souvenir postcard. That counts as learning, right? Lucas: Absolutely. Buying a postcard is a great way to remember your trip. And you can say 我想睇展 when you look at the map, then 呢幅畫好靚 when you pick one. Luna: See, I am already using them. This is so much easier than I thought. Just simple sentences, repeated until they stick. Lucas: That is exactly how it works. Repetition builds confidence. Next time you are in a gallery, try saying 可以影相嗎 to yourself. See how it feels. Luna: I will. And if I see a really cool sculpture, I'll shout 呢幅畫好靚. Even if it is stone, not paint. The spirit is what matters. Lucas: The spirit is everything. You are doing great. Keep listening, keep repeating, and keep exploring. We will be here with more Cantonese soon. Luna: Practice these till we chat again. Have a wonderful day, everyone. And enjoy your next museum visit.
