Transcript
- 0:00All right, y'all. So today we are talking about building
- 0:04a mental health toolkit. If you don't know what
- 0:07that is, you're going to learn today. This is something that's so important for
- 0:11everyone to understand. One thing about me is I
- 0:14feel like I have a plethora of things that I can go to when I'm struggling.
- 0:18And I don't just go to those things when I'm struggling. I also work
- 0:22on those things on a regular basis. I look at it as like my medicine for
- 0:26living life. So I always give this example. I'll say like, if
- 0:29you were struggling with diabetes and you had
- 0:32to take insulin, like you're going to take it every day because if you don't take it,
- 0:36you know, your blood sugars is going to be off and it's hard to survive
- 0:41without your insulin. I think about most of us are
- 0:45living in survival mode, and we're trying to move into more
- 0:48of a living space where we're allowing peace, where we're
- 0:52allowing joy into our lives. But it's hard to do that if
- 0:55you don't have the tools to deal with life, especially because
- 0:59life happens, right? You could be minding your business and
- 1:02so much is going on, and then what do I do? And so many
- 1:05of us have either frozen or we've learned
- 1:09how to self-medicate in ways that doesn't
- 1:13help us and it keeps us stuck. And so my goal is to help you kind
- 1:16of learn these things that you can do. And so when
- 1:20you think of a mental health toolkit, I want you to think of
- 1:23it as something that is
- 1:26there kind of like a first aid. I just thought about that. A first aid
- 1:30kit, right? Where it has the Band-Aids, the gauze, all these different things,
- 1:34right? that's there, I want you to have that.
- 1:37But also looking at it as like, this is something I'm going to go to
- 1:41on a regular basis. So we're going to go through the different
- 1:44things that I want you to think about having in your toolkit. And I want you
- 1:48to think about ways that you can work on implementing
- 1:52this like now, today, right? Because my goal is to help shift the way you
- 1:55think. Use what you can, start where you can. That
- 1:59is so important. So self-care practices are
- 2:02so important, like things like exercise, what
- 2:06you're eating, right? So these are certain things that
- 2:10needs to be in your toolkit, like what am I doing with my physical
- 2:13body? How am I sleeping, right? What am I
- 2:17eating? And am I moving my body? So
- 2:21when you think about those kind of physical aspects of your
- 2:24day-to-day, make sure that's in your toolkit on
- 2:27things that you can do. When I work with people and I talk about moving their body, And
- 2:31one thing that they realize is like, they don't always feel
- 2:34like doing it, but when they do it, they feel good. And so
- 2:38one of the things I tell them is that, put it in your schedule. And
- 2:42those moments, because I have those moments too, where you don't feel
- 2:46like doing it, I want you to think about what's going to happen when you get it done.
- 2:50I think about snoozing the alarm. And
- 2:54I've been guilty of snoozing the alarm, but
- 2:57I also, more likely than not, I get up
- 3:00and not snooze because I recognize if I snooze this alarm, if
- 3:04I don't start first thing in the morning because I have such a packed day, what's
- 3:08going to happen is I'm going to run out of time. I'm going to be working late. I'm going to
- 3:11be anxious or overwhelmed. And I don't like the way
- 3:14anxiety feels. I recognize it. I see how it shows up in my body.
- 3:18So for me, I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure
- 3:21that I'm giving myself what we need. So
- 3:25when you think about that toolkit, ask yourself what
- 3:28kind of self-care practices are in there and
- 3:33any hobbies. What am I doing for myself to maintain?
- 3:38The next thing I want you to think about is mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
- 3:42This is another important thing that should be in your toolkit. One
- 3:46thing that we all have access to is breathing. And
- 3:50one of the things that I recognize I've gotten so in tune with
- 3:54is my breath. And I can recognize if I'm feeling like I'm running out
- 3:57of breath or You see how I just did that? If I'm feeling anxious,
- 4:02I realize I'm not breathing regular. And
- 4:05when people come on the screen, when I start working with
- 4:08people for the day, and they'll come in with that energy, and
- 4:11I'll say, hold on, let's just take a break. Because I'm so mindful and I'm in tune
- 4:15to it, I can recognize when it's not happening for people. And
- 4:18I'll just say, you know what? Let's just take a deep breath. And I take
- 4:21a deep breath. And they're like, OK. That's
- 4:25something that we have access to that we're not utilizing. So
- 4:30really thinking about, am I utilizing
- 4:34my breath, especially when you're struggling? What can I do
- 4:37to help myself in those moments? One of the things you
- 4:41can do if you're watching this, I have my hand up. Put your hand over your heart. I'm
- 4:46just taking a deep breath, something. Even just now, I just did it intentionally,
- 4:50and it felt so good. It just allows my body to
- 4:53calm down. Sometimes we're so used to being in high alert
- 4:57that we're just going, going, going. And this is
- 5:00something I would recommend you try to work on doing. On
- 5:04YouTube, there are these, you can type in a breathing
- 5:08circle, and you could type in two-minute breathing circle. Literally,
- 5:11the circle will breathe in, and then it goes
- 5:15and expands, breathe out, right? And you could just follow that,
- 5:19right? And I don't want, you know, because some people may be like, oh, it's
- 5:22breathing. No, it's not. It's like we're breathing because we need to breathe
- 5:25to be here. But are we breathing intentionally? Is
- 5:29our breathing labored? So many times we
- 5:32are so used to living on high alert that we don't even recognize what's
- 5:35happening. We don't recognize that our shoulders are up all the time. Another
- 5:39thing you can do on YouTube, they have these five-minute body scans
- 5:43where it literally will go through your entire body and says, all right,
- 5:47take a seat. And it'll say, pay attention to
- 5:51where your jaw is. Is your jaw clenched tight?
- 5:55And you'll be surprised that your jaws clench tight. Even now, as
- 5:59you're listening to this, pay attention. Are your hands folded
- 6:03up? Is your shoulders high up? These are like small
- 6:07things, and I don't want to, when I say small, these are little steps we
- 6:11can take, but they're significant, right? I want you to, when I say
- 6:14small steps, every step matters that we're taking to
- 6:17get to where we need to be, right? And so if you can
- 6:21work on creating some mindfulness practices,
- 6:25even like a shower meditation, Taking time
- 6:29in the shower to take a deep breath, smell the soap, feel the
- 6:32water on you, right? Pay attention to what
- 6:35you have going on for the day. What are you smelling? What are
- 6:38you seeing? Use your five senses and get engaged. I
- 6:42love the idea of a shower meditation because that's something
- 6:45that you're doing on a regular basis. So I'm not asking you to create more
- 6:49time because I know for some people, they don't have a
- 6:52lot of flexibility in their schedule. And I don't want you to look
- 6:55at these things that I'm asking you to do as one more thing you
- 6:59have to add to your plate. I want to think about ways you can implement
- 7:02it to things that you're already doing. So in your toolkit, one,
- 7:06we said self-care practices. And then we said our
- 7:10mindfulness. What are we doing for relaxation? Are
- 7:14we making time to just sit down and breathe? Are we
- 7:18making time, as we're sitting down, just maybe have a cup of
- 7:21tea? hot chocolate, listen to something
- 7:25that is very relaxing. I can't tell you what it
- 7:28is. And remember, everybody's toolkit is going to look different.
- 7:32There are certain people I like listening to that might bother you. You
- 7:35might not like the way their voice sounds. So as you're
- 7:39thinking about this toolkit, think about what's going to work for
- 7:42me, because we're all different. And the things that work for one person
- 7:46may not work for another. The next thing I want you to think about in
- 7:49the toolkit are your coping strategies. What do you use when
- 7:52you're coping? And so this is
- 7:56like journaling. Do I listen to music? Do
- 7:59I get to talk to a friend? Because sometimes
- 8:03some of the coping mechanisms we're using are not healthy.
- 8:07into engaging in relationships that, like, maybe in the moment it's
- 8:11comforting, but we recognize, like, the after effect won't
- 8:14be the best for us. Especially in the wintertime, you really got
- 8:17to be mindful on how easy it is to get caught up in some crappy
- 8:21relationships that may be causing you more harm than good.
- 8:26Am I, like addiction, like marijuana and
- 8:29alcohol are legal. Well, marijuana in certain states are
- 8:33more legal than other states, but it's not
- 8:36about the marijuana or alcohol, but the way you're utilizing it,
- 8:39right? When I'm having a bad day, am I always going to the liquor
- 8:43store and getting a bottle? Am I always lighting
- 8:47up? When I light up, it relaxes me,
- 8:51but I find myself feeling stuck. For some people,
- 8:55it gives them what they need and then they're good. Pay
- 8:58attention to the coping mechanisms that you've been using now. I
- 9:02want you to think about when you're stressed, what do
- 9:06I do when I'm stressed right now? If it's
- 9:09working for you and it's not causing you any harm, I love
- 9:13that for you. If it's maybe working
- 9:16for you in the moment and it's causing harm after, I really want you to
- 9:19think about interrupting that cycle. And for some people going
- 9:23cold turkey is very hard, but I want you to think about instead
- 9:27of, let's just say like my go-to is wine. I have wine.
- 9:31Cause some people don't look at wine as a big deal because it's like, it's wine. It's
- 9:34not like they'll say like, it's not like a hard liquor.
- 9:39But as you're thinking about, let's say I'm getting wine every day
- 9:42after work. And I used to do that at one point when I
- 9:45worked in a high pressure place where I'm hearing all these stories. And
- 9:50this is before I understood how energy impacts
- 9:54me. I didn't understand the heaviness that
- 9:57was happening and I was feeling was from all of the things I was listening
- 10:01to. And so I would have wine, but because I
- 10:04worked in addictions and I'm a
- 10:08type of person, I pay attention to the way things work. I
- 10:12grew up in the hood and I seen like, yeah, some people had
- 10:15nice clothes and nice cars, but I also seen they were getting locked up
- 10:18or they were dying. They was getting killed. There
- 10:22was so many things that I paid attention to. And
- 10:25I said, It looks pretty and good, but
- 10:29I don't want it to end that way. And
- 10:32so the wine was fine in the moment, nothing
- 10:36came of it, but I wanted to interrupt that cycle. And
- 10:40I said, you know what? Let me go for a walk. I
- 10:43interrupted that cycle. So what I want you to think about doing Interrupting
- 10:47that cycle with doing something that you enjoy that's
- 10:50in your toolkit, like, do I want to color? Do I want to go for a
- 10:53walk, get some of this energy out? Do I want to go for a run? Do I
- 10:56want to listen to something? Do I want to take a hot shower? Right? Like,
- 11:00think about some of these things that you can do to
- 11:04help, to help you in
- 11:07those moments where you find yourself struggling. Add this
- 11:10to your toolkit. The next thing in your toolkit I
- 11:14want you to think about is what are my supports, right? And
- 11:17this can be tricky for some people because some people may not have the
- 11:21supports like other people have. And
- 11:25what I mean by that, someone that you can talk to, like who's your go-to
- 11:29person? Pay attention. You may say, like, yo, I
- 11:32got go-to people. But are those go-to people helpful? Because
- 11:36sometimes people are only able to give you what they understand
- 11:40or what makes sense for them. And so let's just
- 11:43say that you're struggling with trying to work on
- 11:47being an entrepreneur. Right? And you're going to
- 11:50somebody that works a nine to five and has no desire to
- 11:53be an entrepreneur. Like it's not even in the cards for them, which is fine. Like
- 11:57it's not the road everyone wants to go down. You're talking to
- 12:00them about it and they're like, man, I don't know. That don't make no sense. Like
- 12:04if it feels more discouraging, maybe they're not the
- 12:07best people to talk to about it. Right? And that's okay. It
- 12:10doesn't make them bad people, but they're not people that you can go to for
- 12:14this. Maybe if there's something else that you can go to
- 12:17them for, that's great. But pay attention to who you're talking to
- 12:20and how you're being affected by it. Sometimes we're so used to having certain
- 12:24people in our lives and going to them for everything that we don't realize it's
- 12:28a hindrance to us. And again, it's not about them being
- 12:31bad people, but they don't have the skills or
- 12:34the mindset that you need to take you to the next level
- 12:38that you're trying to get to in life with whatever that is. So
- 12:41whether it's friends, family, it could be a therapist, it could be somebody from your
- 12:44your church or wherever your spiritual practices is,
- 12:48right? Sometimes it could be a coworker, right? There's
- 12:52people in our lives that are good people that
- 12:55we may have a reciprocal relationship with that we don't
- 12:59realize, like, oh yeah, that's right, I can't talk to them. I've spoken to
- 13:02people over the years and they'll talk about these different people in their lives, aunts,
- 13:06like, and I'll be like, oh, well, why didn't you talk to so-and-so? They were like, dang, I
- 13:09didn't even think about that. You know, and so I
- 13:12want you to have this somewhere. Like, you know what, I do have some supports because
- 13:16when you're struggling, I promise you, your mind will play tricks on
- 13:19you and you will forget to dig into that toolkit. But if you have
- 13:22it somewhere visibly available to you, you can go to
- 13:26it. Right. The next thing in your toolkit, I want you to
- 13:29think about resources and tools. So whether it's
- 13:32Celeste's Therapist podcast is a resource, because
- 13:36what I do is I help you shift the way you think. And I
- 13:39have over 400 episodes. Some people say, when
- 13:42they're struggling, they'll just pop on an episode. They'll listen to, I
- 13:46have a ton of interviews that I've done over the years, a ton of solo
- 13:49episodes. So podcasts are a great resource. Books
- 13:52are a great resource. I've learned so
- 13:56much about mental wellness, about the body, about
- 14:00being still from books, not from school, but
- 14:04just from my own reading for pleasure. They
- 14:07have so many self-help books. That's why I say it's not the lack of
- 14:11information available that's keeping us stuck. It's like, how do we apply it
- 14:15to our life in real time? Because sometimes it can feel like
- 14:18a lot. It could feel like, is this really possible to happen? So
- 14:21really being mindful. So books, we're talking about podcasts, maybe
- 14:26some videos that you can watch, some information that
- 14:30can help you really think about things in a different way.
- 14:34But Those are things that I listen to on a regular basis.
- 14:37I'm always listening to somebody that's motivational, listening
- 14:40to podcasts. I'm always reading, right? I'm allowing
- 14:44my mind to expand because if I don't do that and
- 14:47if I just allow social media, the news, like the
- 14:51negativity that happens in this world today, if I allow
- 14:54that to be the only information that my mind is absorbing,
- 15:00Life gets really challenging and hard because that's the only thing
- 15:03my mind has to look forward to. But if I'm constantly feeding
- 15:07myself new information, my mind has
- 15:10a different way of thinking and looking at things. And I don't think
- 15:13we realize the conversations we have, the things that we're listening to, like
- 15:17how they affect us really deeply. So
- 15:22we got the resources, so let's just start from the top, right? So
- 15:25we are talking about what we can do to put in our toolkit. We
- 15:28got our self-care practices, that's one. We got mindfulness,
- 15:32like what are we doing to stay mindful and
- 15:36present and how are we using that to Help us with relaxation. We
- 15:40got our coping strategies, like what are we using to cope when
- 15:43we're struggling? And then in our other part of our
- 15:46toolkit, we have our support systems. Who are our go-to people
- 15:50that we can talk to when we're having a hard time? And then we
- 15:53got some resources and tools like books. We talk
- 15:57about podcasts, maybe YouTube episodes, things like
- 16:00that. And so goal setting, right? I want
- 16:04you to think about as you're setting these goals to work on
- 16:07these things, please be realistic. If you're not getting
- 16:10out of your house and you say, you know what? I'm going to start going
- 16:14for a walk seven days a week. Be realistic with yourself. That's a
- 16:17lot. Because if you say seven days a week and you get
- 16:20out one or two days, you're going to feel discouraged. You're going to be like, oh, can I really do
- 16:24this? I'm starting off with one or two days. Like, it's okay.
- 16:27And I think, you know, I know people really want to change,
- 16:31but sometimes we set our expectations so high that we don't give our
- 16:34brain the confidence that we can do it. When people struggle with
- 16:38consistency, I'll tell them, let's just start with making
- 16:42up our bed. And somebody who makes up their bed every day may be like,
- 16:45oh, that's not a big deal. It's a huge deal. Because if you're not already making
- 16:48up your bed every day and you start making up your bed, guess what? Your mind
- 16:52is like, oh, shoot. I can't be consistent. I've been doing this work for
- 16:55a long time. I see it happen all the time, where people are finding
- 16:58themselves feeling hopeful and confident from
- 17:02the little things that they are trying to do to help build themselves
- 17:06up. So I really want you to think, as you're on this journey of
- 17:09trying to work on taking care of yourself and
- 17:12building this toolkit, don't look at things that you're
- 17:16doing as slow. It's not a big deal. Big up yourself. uh,
- 17:22celebrate yourself, celebrate those goals of
- 17:25how you're making things work, because it's so important. And
- 17:29if you don't celebrate yourself, the one voice that really
- 17:32matters because you're with yourself 24 seven Celeste, the therapist podcast
- 17:36is not in your ear 24 seven, but you are, if you can
- 17:40make that voice count, I promise you, it would be
- 17:43so, so good for your mental health. Right? So
- 17:48pay attention to that. As we're closing, right,
- 17:52we just talked about the different things that you should have in your toolkit.
- 17:57I want you to think about where am I going to place this,
- 18:00right, whether it's digital, right, like something you create,
- 18:04there's some creative people out here, where you put it together and
- 18:08you're looking at it every day, whether it's physical, right, you're writing
- 18:11it out. You're putting it on your mirror. It's a screensaver on
- 18:15your phone. It cannot be something that's going to collect dust. You
- 18:18need to have touch points. When I say touch points, where
- 18:22you have access to it on a regular basis. In
- 18:25my office, if you are watching,
- 18:29I have motivational quotes on my wall. It's from my guided
- 18:33journal, 365 Days of Intentional Living. I'm
- 18:39big on quotes, I'm big on affirming and for people to
- 18:42see things a certain way because guess what? Their mind is absorbing it.
- 18:46And so you can listen to this podcast and be like, oh my gosh, that's so good.
- 18:49I want to do that, right? You can listen to it and say that, but
- 18:53then like, unfortunately the world is not cheering you on
- 18:56to be healthy and they want you to buy something. They want you
- 18:59to feel insecure. They're not, they don't want you to do the
- 19:02things that where you're empowered. Cause if you're so empowered, you
- 19:06don't have to spend money. And so you have to
- 19:09be intentional about the process of building out your toolkit and
- 19:12making sure that you're giving yourself what you need, right?
- 19:16That's so important. So I really want you to think about that. As
- 19:20we close, I really want you to be patient and
- 19:23flexible with yourself. Have grace with yourself as you're trying this
- 19:27out. Don't let this be the last time you're thinking about your mental
- 19:30health toolkit. I want you to really embrace this
- 19:34idea. And if you want to
- 19:37share, I would love to hear from you and hear what
- 19:41you are doing to build your mental health toolkit. I'm actually
- 19:44having a vision brunch party at the end of the year. So if
- 19:48you are in the Massachusetts area and want to come
- 19:51where the beginning part, I'll talk about the different areas of our lives and
- 19:56how you can think about working on creating goals in those areas
- 19:59in a very intentional way. Um, if you want to come, if
- 20:02you go to stw yt.com slash events,
- 20:06you'll find the event there. I'm so excited about it. I want to
- 20:09make it a, now that I have my own space, I want to make it a quarterly
- 20:13thing. every three months where we're checking in because I
- 20:16got this space around the end of the year. So it just so happens that it's
- 20:21the end of the year. So I don't think that we should just be looking at our
- 20:24goals around December going into January. I
- 20:27do think we need to be touching it on a regular basis. So if
- 20:30that's something you're interested in, definitely, I would love to have you here. I
- 20:37want you to know that you have power to create change, but
- 20:41you have to have faith to believe in yourself, right? So if you have faith and
- 20:44you start believing in yourself, I always tell people, no one can take that away
- 20:47from you. So if you want to learn more about me, you
- 20:50can go to celestintherapist.com. If you want to learn more about
- 20:54my wellness center, you can go to stwyt.com, and
- 20:57that stands for shifting the way you think, .com. We're located
- 21:01in Stoughton, Mass. Um, and if you want to have a
- 21:04wellness prevent, we have space for that. So I'm really excited
