- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain
- 0:29Speaker 2: Time on Thursday, May first, and we're live for Meat
- 0:32Speaker 2: Eater HQ and Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Brody Henderson,
- 0:36Speaker 2: and I'm here today with Corey Calkins and Crin Schneider,
- 0:39Speaker 2: who is busy checking her stocks just recently. We'll talk
- 0:44Speaker 2: more about that later maybe if we have time. On
- 0:47Speaker 2: today's show, we're going to talk about our Dad sheep
- 0:50Speaker 2: with Corey Krin and a special guest from Texas Parks
- 0:53Speaker 2: and Wildlife. We're also going to get a field report
- 0:57Speaker 2: from some of our favorite turkey hunting gurus. After that,
- 1:01Speaker 2: we'll share some wild game meals we've made recently, and
- 1:04Speaker 2: we're gonna wrap it up by speaking to a Montana
- 1:07Speaker 2: Regional Wildlife manager about aerial big game surveys and a
- 1:12Speaker 2: bighorn sheep hunting closure here in Montana. That's gonna that'll
- 1:17Speaker 2: be pretty interesting. It's also kind of a bummer, but
- 1:20Speaker 2: hopefully we'll get some good news out of it too.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Before we get in the show, I want to send
- 1:26Speaker 2: out another request all of our dedicated diehard fans to
- 1:32Speaker 2: submit a photo of their fed up old truck for
- 1:35Speaker 2: our twenty twenty six calendar. We're still looking for images
- 1:39Speaker 2: of unique hunting trucks, and for the folks who are
- 1:43Speaker 2: watching today's episode on YouTube, Phil just put up an
- 1:47Speaker 2: example a kind of hunting rig we're looking for. We're
- 1:50Speaker 2: getting a lot of good ones, we're getting some not
- 1:53Speaker 2: so good ones, and we're getting some bad ones. But
- 1:57Speaker 2: this is this is like a prime exam ample of
- 2:00Speaker 2: what we're looking for.
- 2:01Speaker 3: That's right, and Brady, this is what we're not looking for.
- 2:03Speaker 2: That is what we're not looking for.
- 2:06Speaker 4: I understand.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yeah, there's just like some confusion on the left up
- 2:11Speaker 2: part of it.
- 2:11Speaker 5: Yeah, that's effed up, all right.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Also the formatting is wrong. See I thought about it.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I thought about fixing it, but then I decided that's part.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Of the Yeah, we don't need pictures of wrecked trucks
- 2:23Speaker 2: and ditches, So uh, send us something like that first picture.
- 2:27Speaker 4: And uh, what was that classic looking red truck with
- 2:31Speaker 4: a dead with a big old.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Gobbler, a couple of big spotlights on the front.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's a that's a hunting rick.
- 2:38Speaker 5: Yeah, you're not sneaking up on any elk in that thing?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Is that a fresh killer? Do you think the guy
- 2:42Speaker 4: drives that hunting rig with the bird on.
- 2:45Speaker 5: The front all the time fresh kill? I think yeah, probably,
- 2:49Speaker 5: but I wouldn't doubt there's been a deer on that
- 2:51Speaker 5: hood well.
- 2:52Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, that gentleman sent us picture
- 2:55Speaker 2: of that same truck with another good picture some bucksworthy.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, man, we're gonna have to We're gonna have
- 3:03Speaker 2: to take a look at all of them. But here's
- 3:05Speaker 2: the deal. Send us a picture of your truck to
- 3:09Speaker 2: Fucked Up Old Trucks at the mediater dot com, and
- 3:13Speaker 2: over the next few weeks, we're gonna kind of get
- 3:15Speaker 2: a collection of I don't know, fifty to one hundred
- 3:19Speaker 2: of the best pictures we get. We're gonna put those
- 3:22Speaker 2: on the website, and then you can go vote for
- 3:24Speaker 2: the rigs that actually make the calendar, so you you'll
- 3:29Speaker 2: have a hand in deciding which pictures get in the calendar.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The people who get their rigs in the calendar are
- 3:36Speaker 2: gonna get a sweet prize package two hundred and fifty
- 3:39Speaker 2: dollars Mediater store gift card that's good across all all
- 3:43Speaker 2: the mediatter brands. You're gonna get a free BHA membership
- 3:47Speaker 2: and BHA is gonna throw in some additional swag. The
- 3:51Speaker 2: calendar is gonna come out in a few months, like
- 3:54Speaker 2: late summer, early fall. And here's why you gotta buy it,
- 3:58Speaker 2: because we're donating two dollars from the sale of each
- 4:01Speaker 2: copy of the calendar to BHA to help them keep
- 4:05Speaker 2: fighting all these attack never ending attacks on our public lands.
- 4:09Speaker 2: So it's all it's going to a good cause. You
- 4:12Speaker 2: put that thing up in your garage and you feel
- 4:14Speaker 2: good about yourself, so send us your pictures. We need
- 4:18Speaker 2: more folks moving on. You guys, Krinn and Corey a
- 4:26Speaker 2: little jealous. You just went to go to the like
- 4:30Speaker 2: West Texas Desert Mountains to hunt for our dad, So
- 4:36Speaker 2: I want you to give us a rundown of that hunt,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and then we're gonna be joined by a guest from
- 4:41Speaker 2: Texas Parks and Wildlife to talk about some of the
- 4:44Speaker 2: problems that these non native sheep are causing for native wildlife.
- 4:48Speaker 2: But first, just just give us a rundown of your hunt.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Yeah, let's see, Krinn, her significant other, Matt, and myself
- 4:55Speaker 5: were invited down to West Texas by doctor Phil Loretzki,
- 4:59Speaker 5: who's been on the Meteor podcast and this show more
- 5:03Speaker 5: than once. The Duck DNA Turkey DNA guy good friend
- 5:07Speaker 5: of ours. He invited us down to hunt odd ad
- 5:12Speaker 5: on the Indio Research Indio Mountain Research Station, which is
- 5:16Speaker 5: right on the border of Mexico, right on the Rio
- 5:19Speaker 5: Grande in the trans Pacos region of West Texas. There. Yeah,
- 5:24Speaker 5: we hunted two full days. Gratefully it wasn't as hot
- 5:28Speaker 5: as it normally is in early April down there. We
- 5:31Speaker 5: got really lucky and never saw tempts over seventy degrees.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I don't believe the first day we killed two ewes,
- 5:39Speaker 5: which was kind of our primary goal down there, was
- 5:41Speaker 5: to do what we can to minimize the odd ad
- 5:46Speaker 5: population on that ranch by taking a few ewes females.
- 5:52Speaker 5: There's Curris my boyfriend Matt with a beautiful ew right
- 5:57Speaker 5: at last light. That was pretty incredible.
- 6:00Speaker 2: That's some cool looking country man.
- 6:01Speaker 5: It was. It was way more rugged than I expected.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Did you get any a step on, any rattlers or
- 6:07Speaker 2: get any cactus spines in your ass?
- 6:08Speaker 5: Definitely some cactus in the bus.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Was it ste or I forgot who it's like? Who
- 6:13Speaker 4: said something about like the down there, like the thorns
- 6:15Speaker 4: having thorns, you can't you couldn't grab hold of anything.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Everything wants to bite you, stingya.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's all spot in stock.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, all spot in stock. We drove around a
- 6:25Speaker 5: little bit inevitably to find the sheep. We had to
- 6:27Speaker 5: put a lot of miles boots on the ground and
- 6:30Speaker 5: uh yeah, we killed those two ewes on day one
- 6:33Speaker 5: and then day two, Karinn, Phil and I went out
- 6:36Speaker 5: and glassed up this group of twenty three odd ad
- 6:39Speaker 5: on this the high it was actually the highest point
- 6:41Speaker 5: on the ranch, forty thousand acre ranch, and we were
- 6:44Speaker 5: able to stalk in. Took a couple hours to stalk
- 6:47Speaker 5: into four hundred yards and I was able to put
- 6:49Speaker 5: down this beautiful ram and Karin actually harvested a nice
- 6:54Speaker 5: sub adult ram as well. But in front of us
- 7:00Speaker 5: is the recently euro mounted you.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Uh.
- 7:05Speaker 5: There was a lot of fun to euromount. Actually you
- 7:07Speaker 5: got to pop these horns off, uh, and then you
- 7:09Speaker 5: can boil the skull bleached it kind of glistened up
- 7:13Speaker 5: the horns and then glued him back on beautiful mount.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Thank you. Yeah, but the the you meat is delicious,
- 7:22Speaker 5: very blown away by the texture and the flavor of
- 7:25Speaker 5: the meat. The rams a little tougher, but got about
- 7:27Speaker 5: one hundred pounds of meat off the ram.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Yeah, they're burly animals, they really are.
- 7:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 5: He probably before we field dressed and weighed about three
- 7:36Speaker 5: hundred pounds, so he wasn't easy to roll around. We
- 7:39Speaker 5: did make some there's a photo up of us making
- 7:43Speaker 5: I think that was the ribs off of my ew
- 7:47Speaker 5: over the fire as we packed up camp made some
- 7:51Speaker 5: great last Steve here he'd be.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Tearing you up about how you're saying you oh you
- 7:57Speaker 2: oo ooh you you you?
- 8:00Speaker 5: What did I say?
- 8:03Speaker 7: You?
- 8:04Speaker 5: Phil?
- 8:04Speaker 3: Who me?
- 8:05Speaker 7: You?
- 8:06Speaker 6: Audio?
- 8:08Speaker 3: Classic?
- 8:10Speaker 2: So you guys had a good time we did.
- 8:12Speaker 5: It was a hell of an experience.
- 8:14Speaker 4: And tough hunting. Tough hunting for sure, tough.
- 8:17Speaker 2: To meaning tough physically.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Tough, tough for yeah, maybe toughest for me. But yeah,
- 8:23Speaker 4: the it's it's really punishing territory, I mean, and those
- 8:28Speaker 4: those animals are robust to be able to live out
- 8:31Speaker 4: there striving. They eat forage, cactus. Maybe there's a little
- 8:36Speaker 4: bit water, a little bit of water here and there,
- 8:38Speaker 4: but yeah, they're it's tough tough to hunt them.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Well, that's a great segue into our first interview. Our
- 8:48Speaker 2: first guest is Texas Parks and Wildlife Desert Big Horn
- 8:52Speaker 2: Sheet program leader Freulin Hernandez Brolin. We got you on
- 8:57Speaker 2: the line.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yep, no, thank you for having me on the show.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Glad to be here.
- 9:02Speaker 2: So Freudlan, these oudad are you'll also hear them called
- 9:05Speaker 2: barbary sheep there. They're native to northern and western Africa.
- 9:11Speaker 2: But yeah, in decades past they've been cut loose in
- 9:15Speaker 2: places like New Mexico and Texas to provide additional hunting opportunities.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Can you give us like a brief history of the
- 9:25Speaker 2: out ad population in West Texas and then we'll get
- 9:28Speaker 2: into why there's such a big problem for desert big
- 9:32Speaker 2: horn sheep.
- 9:34Speaker 6: Yep, yep no, So again, thank you for having me. Uh.
- 9:37Speaker 8: You know, ironically the text Sparks and Wildlife brought him
- 9:41Speaker 8: in back in the mad thirty fifties. They brought him in,
- 9:44Speaker 8: as you say, as an additional game species, and there
- 9:48Speaker 8: was also some private reintroductions and I know they were
- 9:52Speaker 8: up in the in the final Luto Canyon of the
- 9:54Speaker 8: Panhandle of Texas and then some in the in the
- 9:57Speaker 8: in West Texas. And at that time, I don't think
- 10:00Speaker 8: anybody envisioned that they would do as well as they've done.
- 10:03Speaker 8: And so now they occur in all the mountains in
- 10:05Speaker 8: West Texas, they occur up in a Poolutle Canyon, and
- 10:08Speaker 8: again in a Panhandle and also in Central Texas. And
- 10:11Speaker 8: they've done really, really well just in the in the
- 10:14Speaker 8: trespakers of Texas. We estimate that there's probably twenty to
- 10:18Speaker 8: twenty five thousand odd that in those West Texas mountains.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So there's twenty five thousand of those suckers out there.
- 10:27Speaker 2: What's your best guess on like a historic high population
- 10:33Speaker 2: of like how many big horns used to occupy the
- 10:37Speaker 2: mountains of West Texas?
- 10:40Speaker 6: Yep.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Well, And so back in the eighteen eighties there were
- 10:43Speaker 8: estimates of hunting a fifteen hundred, twenty five hundred, not
- 10:47Speaker 8: up there even three thousand, and up until recently, about
- 10:51Speaker 8: five six years ago, we had hit that historic kai again.
- 10:55Speaker 8: We were seeing fifteen hundred animals, fifteen hundred big horns
- 10:58Speaker 8: in the West Texas mountain. In twenty nineteen, we've got
- 11:02Speaker 8: a first disease event and we are now, uh, we've
- 11:08Speaker 8: lost over fifty percent of the herd now we've got
- 11:11Speaker 8: about six hundred to seven hundred of big horns in
- 11:14Speaker 8: the state, when just five years ago we were up
- 11:16Speaker 8: to again the eighteen eighty levels.
- 11:18Speaker 2: And and that disease event that that's pneumonia.
- 11:22Speaker 8: I'm guessing correct, that's the No, We've had three independent
- 11:27Speaker 8: disease events since twenty nineteen, and that's the Michael plasma
- 11:31Speaker 8: of pneumonia or the mov that causes pneumonia.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Are so are the ourdad transmitting that to the big
- 11:42Speaker 2: horns or the ourdad just out competing them for resources?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Like what kind of problems are the ourdad actually causing
- 11:49Speaker 2: for the native desert big horns in Texas.
- 11:53Speaker 8: It's a it's a combination of those two things and others.
- 11:56Speaker 6: But those two things and so the add that do
- 11:59Speaker 6: carry that in.
- 12:01Speaker 8: We've done research in pen conditions, pen setting and the
- 12:06Speaker 8: odd that are able to transmit that bacteria to the
- 12:10Speaker 8: desert big horns.
- 12:12Speaker 6: We have not definitively proved that in a wild setting.
- 12:16Speaker 8: We've tested thirteen different mountain ranges in West Texas, and
- 12:21Speaker 8: in all thirteen mountain ranges we have found that all
- 12:25Speaker 8: that carry that bacteria and in some cases up to
- 12:28Speaker 8: sixty percent of the animals that we've sampled carry that bacteria.
- 12:32Speaker 6: So it's a it's a.
- 12:33Speaker 8: Huge problem from a disease standpoint.
- 12:36Speaker 6: The competition.
- 12:38Speaker 8: They completely outcompete the big horns, not just through because
- 12:43Speaker 8: of numbers, but also they're just a bigger, hardier animal.
- 12:48Speaker 8: They hoard the big horn ewes and and push off
- 12:52Speaker 8: the big horn rams and so ad that rams create
- 12:56Speaker 8: their own big horn hairm type of deals.
- 12:58Speaker 6: So they're socially disruptive. I mean, it's it's it's just
- 13:01Speaker 6: you name it. You know. They just outcompete, the outcompete
- 13:05Speaker 6: the big horns.
- 13:06Speaker 8: And that's just from a competition standpoint. In the numbers
- 13:11Speaker 8: that they occur, they just devastate the habitat. There are
- 13:15Speaker 8: places that the countryside has almost peeled to the ground
- 13:18Speaker 8: and that's simply just a density result of the high
- 13:22Speaker 8: densities that they're they carry in yep.
- 13:26Speaker 2: So this is like a problem that's not necessarily unique
- 13:30Speaker 2: to Texas, but Texas is I think something like ninety
- 13:33Speaker 2: eight percent private land, and the area where these our
- 13:38Speaker 2: dad are living is also almost exclusively private land. And
- 13:44Speaker 2: you've got a lot of landowners that are charging folks
- 13:47Speaker 2: to go hunt for our dads. So my question is like,
- 13:52Speaker 2: can a hunting really have an impact and is it
- 13:55Speaker 2: a challenge with getting landowners on board to really knock
- 13:59Speaker 2: back those out aut numbers through hunting.
- 14:03Speaker 6: Well?
- 14:04Speaker 8: And so, uh, you got two things going on there.
- 14:07Speaker 8: One is the hunting aspect of it, and uh, it's
- 14:15Speaker 8: supplemental income for for landowners. But just from a sheer
- 14:20Speaker 8: number perspective, a density perspective, hunting alone is not going
- 14:24Speaker 8: to reduce the numbers down the levels that aren't detrimental
- 14:29Speaker 8: to the habitat or that they don't compete with our
- 14:32Speaker 8: native unculates and and and so when you have twenty
- 14:36Speaker 8: to thirty thousand big horns out on the landscape and
- 14:40Speaker 8: only a few hundred big horns, I mean it, it's
- 14:44Speaker 8: a well, it's just it's just a huge, huge challenge
- 14:49Speaker 8: for us for us to overcome.
- 14:52Speaker 6: I will say that the mindset is changing.
- 14:54Speaker 8: Landowner mindset is changing, and they are recognizing that the
- 14:58Speaker 8: odd dead not only uh have negative impacts on our
- 15:01Speaker 8: big horns, but but also on on mule deer.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And we're looking at that.
- 15:07Speaker 8: Yeah, so we've got research looking looking into that. And
- 15:11Speaker 8: so you got you know, the odd ad out competing
- 15:14Speaker 8: the big horns. They're also uh you know, wreaking havoc
- 15:17Speaker 8: on muleier populations and the habitat, and so landowners are
- 15:20Speaker 8: are are finally realizing that, uh, too many out of
- 15:24Speaker 8: that on the landscape are detrimental. So we don't want
- 15:28Speaker 8: we Texas Parks and Wailave would like to see all
- 15:31Speaker 8: of that gone, but realistically that's not a that's not
- 15:34Speaker 8: a realistic goal. And so we're working with landowners to
- 15:37Speaker 8: lessen those densities adreakys those densities, the levels that that
- 15:42Speaker 8: aren't detrimental to our native ungulates or the habitat.
- 15:45Speaker 2: What what's that kind of work look like?
- 15:47Speaker 9: Uh?
- 15:48Speaker 2: I mean, like, do you see a potential of ourdad,
- 15:54Speaker 2: you know, getting knocked back to the point where there's
- 15:57Speaker 2: a healthy desert big horn population again? And like what
- 16:01Speaker 2: kind of human human intervention does that involve.
- 16:06Speaker 8: It's gonna it's gonna require partnerships. I mean that there's
- 16:09Speaker 8: no two ways about it. It's gonna require partnerships with
- 16:12Speaker 8: parks and Wildlife, with landowners, with NGOs, with the hunting community.
- 16:17Speaker 6: Uh to be able to address that.
- 16:19Speaker 8: You know that that monumental challenge, and it's not gonna
- 16:23Speaker 8: happen overnight. And and it's again, it's gonna require everyone
- 16:27Speaker 8: getting on that same ship and saying, Okay, we've got
- 16:29Speaker 8: to do something. Uh, we've got to decrease the population
- 16:33Speaker 8: all that populations, uh dramatically for for there to be changed.
- 16:37Speaker 8: And and again I'm pretty optimistic. I like to consider
- 16:40Speaker 8: myself an optimistic person. Uh, but I do realize I'm
- 16:43Speaker 8: also a realist, and I do realize that it's not
- 16:46Speaker 8: gonna happen overnight. And so we got our work cut
- 16:49Speaker 8: out for us. And when I say we, I'm not
- 16:51Speaker 8: just talking Texas parks and wildlife. I'm talking landowners, NGOs,
- 16:55Speaker 8: a hunting community.
- 16:55Speaker 6: You know, just everybody's gonna.
- 16:57Speaker 8: Have to get on board to be able to to
- 16:59Speaker 8: move in a in a positive direction.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Great, So can you crystal ball a future for desert
- 17:07Speaker 2: big Horns and say twenty years like even like if
- 17:12Speaker 2: you're being super optimistic, like you, you like like what
- 17:17Speaker 2: you would like to see eventually happen now?
- 17:20Speaker 8: And so my goal uh, and I'm charged with with
- 17:24Speaker 8: that responsibility. But my goal, professional and personal goal is
- 17:28Speaker 8: is to see the West Texas Mountains, all of the
- 17:31Speaker 8: West Texas Mountains that are considered uh historical big horn
- 17:35Speaker 8: range for them to be occupied by big horns, and
- 17:39Speaker 8: so can we do that?
- 17:40Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely we can.
- 17:41Speaker 8: We can do that, but again, as I mentioned, we're
- 17:43Speaker 8: all gonna have to you know, kind of roll up
- 17:46Speaker 8: our sleeves and get the work. We just did a
- 17:49Speaker 8: capture and translocation from our only clean soares in the state, and.
- 17:53Speaker 6: That's Elephant Mountain.
- 17:54Speaker 8: Whilefe bataging area, we captured seventy seven big horns. We
- 17:58Speaker 8: took them over, translocated them to the Franklin Mountains which
- 18:02Speaker 8: are situated within El Paso. And and you know, we
- 18:05Speaker 8: hope that that population there does well, it takes hold,
- 18:09Speaker 8: it becomes you know, sustainable on its own, and then
- 18:12Speaker 8: it grows and we're able to do capturing and translocations
- 18:16Speaker 8: off of their two other mountain ranges. So uh, you know,
- 18:19Speaker 8: again I'm optimistic that we're able to do that, but
- 18:21Speaker 8: we need to address all that densities first.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Gotcha you mentioned some n g O s Uh, what
- 18:29Speaker 2: are some menos people can throw a little cash towards
- 18:33Speaker 2: to help out.
- 18:35Speaker 8: You know, two of our greatest partners are the Texas
- 18:39Speaker 8: Bayhorn Society and the Wildsheet Foundation. You know, we've we've
- 18:43Speaker 8: you know, they've been with us through thick and thin.
- 18:46Speaker 8: They've supported us, you know, financially as well as logistically.
- 18:50Speaker 8: So those two organizations are you know, have been at
- 18:53Speaker 8: the forefront with us, you know, trying to trying to attack.
- 18:56Speaker 5: These these issues.
- 18:58Speaker 8: But then you also have you know, in fact that
- 19:00Speaker 8: was at a conference just last week and talking to
- 19:02Speaker 8: some folks from uh Grand Slam Club, Ovist. We got
- 19:06Speaker 8: the Texas Wileff Association, Dallas Safari Club, Houston Safari Club,
- 19:10Speaker 8: any conservation organization. Uh, they lend a hand. But our
- 19:15Speaker 8: two greatest partners is the Texas Big Horn Society in
- 19:18Speaker 8: the Wallsheet Foundation.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Great. Okay, last question, Freulan, how did get a bad
- 19:24Speaker 2: raps table fair? What's your what's your favorite way to
- 19:27Speaker 2: eat those things?
- 19:29Speaker 7: Man?
- 19:29Speaker 8: I love them, I love them and and they and
- 19:32Speaker 8: they do they do get a bad rap. And I
- 19:33Speaker 8: think they get a bad rap because most of the
- 19:35Speaker 8: animals that are harvested are are tough old rams and
- 19:39Speaker 8: so as you might suspect it's it's it's probably not
- 19:43Speaker 8: as tasty as as a lamber or you.
- 19:46Speaker 6: And so Corey was mentioning that, uh, you know, I heard.
- 19:49Speaker 8: That he he harvested a couple of years and they
- 19:51Speaker 8: were a great taste to Manna.
- 19:53Speaker 6: I love them. I grew up on gold. I love
- 19:56Speaker 6: it to me. It tastes very similar to goat.
- 19:58Speaker 8: You know you got you can do it and be
- 20:00Speaker 8: yeah you can, uh you know, do some steaks, you
- 20:03Speaker 8: name it. I've done some sausage that processed my own
- 20:06Speaker 8: meat and so I've done some odd that sausage and
- 20:09Speaker 8: that's the best eating sausage that I've had so far.
- 20:11Speaker 6: So now they're good eating out. I would like for
- 20:14Speaker 6: people to try them a little more.
- 20:15Speaker 8: Maybe change that perspective or change that uh, change that attitude.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure, I want to come down there and
- 20:21Speaker 2: have you cook for you.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna hit you up for some
- 20:23Speaker 4: recipes after you jump off the line.
- 20:27Speaker 8: Absolutely, yeah, from down I'll yeah, you know, y'all come down.
- 20:30Speaker 8: I'll definitely burn some meat for y'all.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Well, great froul and thanks for checking in with us
- 20:36Speaker 2: and and and learning us up on this. It was
- 20:39Speaker 2: it was real interesting talking to you.
- 20:41Speaker 8: Yeah, man, drive safe now, you bet. Thank y'all again,
- 20:45Speaker 8: appreciate what y'all do. H your interest in getting the
- 20:48Speaker 8: story out. Man, it's it's awesome. Y'all do great work.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Great thanks man, have a good day, you think likewise.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Gosh, that's really interesting. I didn't realize that the odd
- 21:00Speaker 4: ad rams gather big horn females.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he Yeah, I mean I think he
- 21:08Speaker 2: was more saying they like push like push him out,
- 21:12Speaker 2: but they're real aggressive.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Well, I guess there is evidence that the will gather harems.
- 21:18Speaker 2: And then the big horn rams just can't get to them, right, Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 5: Yeah, gotta wonder if yeah, out competing just stuff in
- 21:26Speaker 5: their blood to be kind of bullies and they think
- 21:28Speaker 5: they're all bad ass the bullet hits them.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Will you guys make me want to go down
- 21:33Speaker 2: there and hunt them?
- 21:33Speaker 5: Now?
- 21:34Speaker 2: It's pretty fun, but I'm a turkey hunter this time
- 21:39Speaker 2: of year. And uh, next up, we've got some regional
- 21:44Speaker 2: turkey hunting reports. Oh it's music to my ear. Wow,
- 21:52Speaker 2: it's my favorite favorite two sounds.
- 21:54Speaker 5: In the world. Well, he's goblin.
- 21:58Speaker 2: We got uh, We're gonna check in with Giannie, Brent
- 22:01Speaker 2: and Doug and get a report from those guys.
- 22:04Speaker 1: First, All right, turkey report from southern Colorado Giannis putell
- 22:10Speaker 1: Us and Steven ronello. As you can see, we've got
- 22:13Speaker 1: a couple of dead birds. We actually had three in
- 22:15Speaker 1: the last three days. But the turkey hunting has been tough.
- 22:20Speaker 1: We found him on the roost. They've gobbled good on
- 22:23Speaker 1: the roost. Once they hit the ground, they've been silent.
- 22:26Speaker 1: We killed two of the latest birds we've ever killed.
- 22:30Speaker 1: The one fellaw that was here for the TRCP hunt
- 22:32Speaker 1: killed a bird at about seven thirty seven forty and
- 22:36Speaker 1: I killed a bird almost by at eight o'clock last night. Now, Steve,
- 22:42Speaker 1: anything to add to that.
- 22:45Speaker 6: No, it's been tough.
- 22:46Speaker 7: They're they're glued to the hens. You know, guys will
- 22:49Speaker 7: be like, oh, they're all hand up, but glued to
- 22:52Speaker 7: the hens. The turkeys we've killed, I mean to be
- 22:55Speaker 7: honest with We've had to bushwhack our turks.
- 22:57Speaker 6: We've had to like hunt them like spot in stock
- 22:59Speaker 6: turkey hunting.
- 23:02Speaker 7: After a lot of calling attempts, a lot of calling attempts.
- 23:08Speaker 9: I'm hunting at one of my most favorite places with
- 23:10Speaker 9: some of my most favorite people. It's Missouri turkey season
- 23:15Speaker 9: week two. Yesterday, first day that I got here, it
- 23:20Speaker 9: rained all day. It was cold and miserable, and my
- 23:24Speaker 9: hunt was cold. And miserable. But I was turkey hunting,
- 23:27Speaker 9: and that beach work any day. No goblin from the roost,
- 23:31Speaker 9: no goblin from the ground. They didn't even see a
- 23:34Speaker 9: goblin where I was hunting.
- 23:36Speaker 6: This morning, a new day, a new hunt.
- 23:40Speaker 9: No goblin from the roost, just a little bit of wind, cloudy.
- 23:44Speaker 9: You would think they had been goblin, but is luck
- 23:47Speaker 9: would have it, you didn't. So it was discouraging, to
- 23:49Speaker 9: say the least. But if you stick with it long enough,
- 23:52Speaker 9: if you're going to be a turkey.
- 23:53Speaker 6: Hunter and you're committed to being a good one.
- 23:55Speaker 9: You gotta stay with it as long as you can.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Sometimes he is a virtue.
- 24:05Speaker 5: It's goblin time in Missouri.
- 24:09Speaker 10: Well we're hearing the report from stan what's that? What
- 24:12Speaker 10: did you hear down there? You morning after?
- 24:18Speaker 6: Wow? How about before? I heard a couple of them?
- 24:24Speaker 10: Huh? Well, so fight it down is the report from
- 24:28Speaker 10: southwest Wisconsin. I still think that if you're out hunting
- 24:32Speaker 10: turkeys in this area, the best thing you can do
- 24:34Speaker 10: is find a spot where they're likely to be wanting
- 24:38Speaker 10: to move, and be patient and stay there. We certainly
- 24:42Speaker 10: employ that strategy at the first part of the season.
- 24:47Speaker 10: Really sitting in blinds or finding a location and finding
- 24:50Speaker 10: a good tree to lean up against and stay on,
- 24:53Speaker 10: but keep the running and gun into a minimum minimum.
- 24:58Speaker 10: We've done really well with that strategy. We're seven for seven.
- 25:02Speaker 10: Keifer is the first one so far. It hasn't got one,
- 25:04Speaker 10: but this was just the first day of it. It's
- 25:07Speaker 10: April thirtieth, the first day of season, seeing Wisconsin, and
- 25:12Speaker 10: that is the report from here. Be patient and stay
- 25:15Speaker 10: after him.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Yeah, nice, thanks guys.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Man. I don't know about Johannis and Steve. Maybe they're
- 25:21Speaker 2: not good at Collin turkeys. Everyone else is getting them.
- 25:24Speaker 5: Yeah, it was interesting while they're flaying some breasts on
- 25:27Speaker 5: the tail. Yeah, but they had to earn him. It
- 25:29Speaker 5: sounded like it looked like it was hot down there.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Yep, yep. I've been out a couple times here in
- 25:35Speaker 2: Montana season open to fifteenth. I killed one opening day
- 25:39Speaker 2: like classic, you know, gobbling on the roost, gobbling a
- 25:44Speaker 2: little on the ground, and then worked on him for
- 25:46Speaker 2: an hour and killed him. And then went out last
- 25:49Speaker 2: week and got a couple with my boys. So it's
- 25:52Speaker 2: like it's been good here in Montana. It's I mean,
- 25:56Speaker 2: it's always the thing where they gobble like crazy on
- 25:59Speaker 2: the roost and slowed down for a while, And it
- 26:01Speaker 2: seems like an hour after they hit the ground, the
- 26:05Speaker 2: hens leave them and the goblin picks up.
- 26:07Speaker 3: So like it's it's.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Been good here. That's that's really all I can say.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it sounds like there's been a lot of success
- 26:15Speaker 5: around the office. Yeah, yeah, opening day especially.
- 26:18Speaker 2: And man, I think it's like any other kind of hunting,
- 26:21Speaker 2: Like someone's hunting one spot, it's like, Eh, they're not
- 26:24Speaker 2: gobbling here, And like you talk to someone who's hunting
- 26:27Speaker 2: ten miles away or twenty miles away, and they're like, God,
- 26:30Speaker 2: they're gobbling like crazy. They came running in. So like
- 26:33Speaker 2: regionals is a regional reports good? But I like, I
- 26:37Speaker 2: think it's like real important to like know what's going
- 26:41Speaker 2: on on a like micro level local level too.
- 26:44Speaker 4: We went turkey hunting. I this is only a second
- 26:47Speaker 4: time I've ever gone. We saw four different hens, came
- 26:53Speaker 4: real close, but no.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Gobbles, no goblins, gobbles. You haven't been out you're you've
- 26:59Speaker 2: just been out there.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Yeah. I like to kill a bear before I go
- 27:02Speaker 5: turkey hunting, which should have one down in twenty four hours.
- 27:06Speaker 5: How to buddy miss one last Friday. It's a long shot, though,
- 27:10Speaker 5: make sure your dope's accurate.
- 27:12Speaker 2: There you go, there's a good.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Tip, hot tip.
- 27:14Speaker 2: All right, Phil, What do we got on the listener
- 27:17Speaker 2: feedback here?
- 27:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, just a reminder let's get some questions in
- 27:21Speaker 3: for the hosts, especially if they're specific to any of
- 27:24Speaker 3: the hosts. Prody Krin Corey. We had this question last week,
- 27:28Speaker 3: but it's a whole different crew this week, and it's
- 27:30Speaker 3: a popular question I've noticed, But the dubster is asking
- 27:35Speaker 3: for those favorite turkey recipes other than standard frying. I'm guessing,
- 27:39Speaker 3: like you know, I hear about nuggets all the time,
- 27:41Speaker 3: and schnitzel that was the popular.
- 27:43Speaker 5: That's all.
- 27:44Speaker 2: It's like, six is different versions of frying turkeys. They're
- 27:48Speaker 2: all good. Something I like to do, that's like my
- 27:53Speaker 2: whole family loves is just slow cook braise those thighs
- 27:57Speaker 2: and drums and wings. Like it's a pain in the
- 28:01Speaker 2: ass to cut turkey wings off of those birds, but
- 28:05Speaker 2: it's worth it. Like you get two wings off of
- 28:07Speaker 2: a gobbler and there's like a significant chunk of meat
- 28:10Speaker 2: off of those wings. So you throw all that stuff
- 28:12Speaker 2: in some stock raise it for however, long. It takes
- 28:16Speaker 2: five six hours. Then you then you pull all that
- 28:20Speaker 2: stuff off the bone and just make tacos out of it.
- 28:24Speaker 4: What's a flavor profile that you're normally doing that?
- 28:29Speaker 2: I mean flavors, Yeah, citrus and cumin, a lot of that.
- 28:35Speaker 2: And you can fry that stuff that that that pulled
- 28:38Speaker 2: meat and get a little crisp on it.
- 28:40Speaker 5: That sounds yeah. Go to the meat eater website and
- 28:43Speaker 5: look for Danielle Pruetz tequila turkey tacos. That's my favorite
- 28:47Speaker 5: way to eat those legs.
- 28:49Speaker 3: M This one is something I know nothing about, but
- 28:56Speaker 3: Jeremy asks. He says, I've been I've recently been hunting
- 28:59Speaker 3: pigs in close cords with a lever three fifty seven
- 29:01Speaker 3: as anyone else had success with hunting with a pistol
- 29:03Speaker 3: caliber rifle. Cheers from either Australia or Austin or Austria,
- 29:10Speaker 3: We don't know. He cut off the word there.
- 29:11Speaker 2: But you know, I've never never done it. I don't
- 29:14Speaker 2: see why it wouldn't work great if you were shooting
- 29:17Speaker 2: them up close.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Yeah, never tried that.
- 29:21Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Thank God, we don't have pigs up here yet yet.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Brandon asks Brodie what was more fun competing on Meat
- 29:29Speaker 3: Eater Roast or judging on the show.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Obviously, it's like it's just way more relaxing judging, But
- 29:39Speaker 2: it was fun cooking too. I don't know. I liked
- 29:41Speaker 2: him both. You know, you got Steve and Jesse were
- 29:44Speaker 2: a little harsh with their judging. I got thick skin.
- 29:51Speaker 2: I liked him both. I'd like another crack at the
- 29:54Speaker 2: cooking though.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yeah, this is gonna be a Brodie specific question, I'm sure,
- 29:59Speaker 3: but Nick asks what advice does the crew have for
- 30:01Speaker 3: someone trying to get their first turkey in Pennsylvania? Definitely
- 30:05Speaker 3: three years zero turkeys, he says.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I would I don't know, Like Pennsylvania is a big
- 30:11Speaker 2: ass state with a lot of different kind of country.
- 30:15Speaker 2: You could be hunting turkeys on a twenty acre chunk
- 30:18Speaker 2: of private or you could be hunting thousands of acres
- 30:22Speaker 2: of state forest. So like, I don't know, man, if
- 30:27Speaker 2: I was hunting in the middle of the state where
- 30:29Speaker 2: there's a lot of public land, I would kind of
- 30:33Speaker 2: look at it like elk hunting out west and just
- 30:35Speaker 2: like hike into some stuff that's just not getting hunted.
- 30:40Speaker 2: But I don't know if that's that's nixt situation here.
- 30:43Speaker 2: If there's turkeys around and you're hunting a small chunk
- 30:46Speaker 2: of private, take Doug's advice and just like, find a
- 30:50Speaker 2: good spot where there's turkeys passing through and just sit
- 30:54Speaker 2: there as long as you can and just call now
- 30:56Speaker 2: and then, and eventually something good's gonna happen.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Cool, let's see here. Jacob asks, Hey, Corey, I was
- 31:04Speaker 3: going turkey hunting this weekend and I might see a bear.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I was going to carry my slug barrel too. I'm
- 31:09Speaker 3: using a twenty gage. Do you think if I keep
- 31:11Speaker 3: it under one hundred yards, I'm assuming I could kill
- 31:14Speaker 3: a bear.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Man, I'd get even closer than that. It's a long
- 31:18Speaker 5: shot with a slug fifty yards.
- 31:21Speaker 2: Yeah, just the idea of having to, like, oh there's
- 31:23Speaker 2: a bear, change barrels and then all it's like that.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I'm not telling him not to do it, but he's
- 31:29Speaker 2: making life awful difficult.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Yeah. I've done that before. I've carried shotguns around and
- 31:35Speaker 5: a bow on my back because tis the season for
- 31:38Speaker 5: both turkey and bears to be on the docket for hunting.
- 31:42Speaker 2: But if you were hunting a spot where you could
- 31:43Speaker 2: run bears with hounds, Yeah, there you go. That slug
- 31:48Speaker 2: gun work just fine.
- 31:49Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Shoot him out a tree, yeah yeah, yeah, I get tight. Man,
- 31:52Speaker 5: that's a one hundred yards would be tough unless you're
- 31:54Speaker 5: that confident. But I'd say get right in there and
- 31:57Speaker 5: shoot him in the forehead.
- 31:59Speaker 3: McKenna is asking you, guys, what caliber you used for
- 32:01Speaker 3: your on your odd ad hunt.
- 32:04Speaker 5: I had a three hundred wind mag very trustworthy caliber
- 32:09Speaker 5: I've used since I was twelve.
- 32:10Speaker 4: I brought my six', five which would have been, fine
- 32:13Speaker 4: but THEN i Used corey's rifle just because of the whole.
- 32:16Speaker 5: Situation, yeah it was All we were set up on
- 32:19Speaker 5: this rock pile surrounded by cactus and just found like
- 32:23Speaker 5: the one little body shaped size that didn't have, cactus
- 32:26Speaker 5: AND i shot mine and the odd. Ad most of
- 32:28Speaker 5: the Odd ad went off the, cliff but a couple
- 32:30Speaker 5: stayed there And kringe jumped up onto my gun that
- 32:32Speaker 5: the dope was dialed and, everything and.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Got rifle that sig cross the saw. Tooth, yep you
- 32:39Speaker 2: run a suppressor on. It, yep got The so the
- 32:42Speaker 2: recoil didn't bother you with that suppressor, On.
- 32:44Speaker 4: No not at. All normally recall coil doesn't bother me
- 32:47Speaker 4: too much for for any kind of bigger Guns i've
- 32:51Speaker 4: shot suppressed or. Not that normally doesn't bother me. Much
- 32:54Speaker 4: but a six' five would have been fine, for that
- 32:56Speaker 4: and probably a couple of other calibers would have been.
- 33:00Speaker 4: FOR that i probably would have shot up used my
- 33:03Speaker 4: three h eight too on. That hunt that would have worked.
- 33:06Speaker 3: For sure, all right we'll do one more here for,
- 33:08Speaker 3: this segment and we'll move it. Along here this is the, Big.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Question karinn but this is, For. You karin what is
- 33:15Speaker 3: your most memorable? MOMENT outdoors i think we can narrow
- 33:19Speaker 3: that down to the last six years, or so since you, working,
- 33:22Speaker 3: HERE well.
- 33:25Speaker 4: I would honestly have to say bits of this recent odd.
- 33:29Speaker 4: AD hunt i think because it was, so so so challenging,
- 33:33Speaker 4: for me traumatizing now.
- 33:36Speaker 5: It was it was just.
- 33:37Speaker 4: Really tough at ONE point i was probably close to.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Being dehydrated the the heights and the incline were pretty terrifying,
- 33:51Speaker 4: for me so. Definitely memorable there was a POINT where i, was,
- 33:55Speaker 4: like SO so i guess weekend buy it. ALL that, i,
- 34:01Speaker 4: Said like i'm very grateful for, the Experience but i'd
- 34:04Speaker 4: never do. It again and obviously that's not that's not
- 34:06Speaker 4: true Now that i've come. Through it but but that
- 34:10Speaker 4: hunt was was probably up there and then probably my second,
- 34:15Speaker 4: solo Meal. Deer hunt it was just very uh gratifying
- 34:21Speaker 4: to take something on my own that that's always a
- 34:26Speaker 4: little bit of a of a boost to know that
- 34:29Speaker 4: you could be successful out there on. Your own.
- 34:31Speaker 5: That's huge and there.
- 34:33Speaker 4: You?
- 34:34Speaker 3: Go cool is?
- 34:35Speaker 8: That?
- 34:36Speaker 3: It phil we've got more, coming in, but yeah, we
- 34:38Speaker 3: can we. Can tackle there's gonna be another segment at
- 34:40Speaker 3: the end of, the show so don't stop submitting questions
- 34:43Speaker 3: and we might tackle a few that people have. Already
- 34:45Speaker 3: asked so, all right it's.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Time For Meat.
- 34:48Speaker 11: Eater menu in, that said.
- 35:01Speaker 3: What that's a?
- 35:07Speaker 2: New, one, yeah excellent excellent job again.
- 35:12Speaker 3: NEXT week i mean THAT'S when i was editing that,
- 35:14Speaker 3: THIS morning i was just laughing at how that's probably
- 35:17Speaker 3: my most. Dumb one it's. So stupid.
- 35:23Speaker 5: Those notes made.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Me cry, oh good, All right metior menu is when
- 35:30Speaker 2: our hosts uh cook up a wild wild food dish
- 35:33Speaker 2: and we're gonna share those dishes wish with you and
- 35:37Speaker 2: show you, a picture and then we're gonna do something
- 35:39Speaker 2: a little different. This time we're gonna we're gonna let
- 35:42Speaker 2: the listeners decide who made the best, best meal which
- 35:45Speaker 2: is only based on. A picture, of course you know
- 35:48Speaker 2: you can't, taste it but you know the eyes are
- 35:51Speaker 2: important when you're eating.
- 35:52Speaker 5: Eating foods don't nobody be licking? Their, Computer well.
- 35:57Speaker 4: I'M glad i didn't end. UP cooking I thought i
- 36:01Speaker 4: may have had time.
- 36:02Speaker 2: To do why THAT'S what i wanted.
- 36:03Speaker 5: TO see i just had, a busy.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Busy, week well tell people what you were going.
- 36:08Speaker 4: To, Do okay so this, past fall a bunch of
- 36:13Speaker 4: us uh with meat eater experiences Fished. In louisiana and
- 36:18Speaker 4: there were we when we were, Cleaning fish STEVE and
- 36:23Speaker 4: i cleaned up some some, fish head AND so i
- 36:29Speaker 4: was going to look into you're, Talking, about well. There's
- 36:34Speaker 4: two so we actually have we have it in our
- 36:37Speaker 4: in our in. Our freezer here we have some ginormous.
- 36:39Speaker 4: TUNEA head i want one. Of those but we we
- 36:43Speaker 4: also cleaned up the heads of of the red fish and.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Some OTHERS so i think there were red fish HEADS
- 36:48Speaker 4: that i brought HOME that i was thinking of doing
- 36:50Speaker 4: some kind of grill.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Or stew there's a surprising amount of meat when you
- 36:57Speaker 2: started digging around and like certain kinds.
- 36:59Speaker 4: Of fish and the cheeks and, the collar and then
- 37:04Speaker 4: there's ACTUALLY like i, don't know what do you, call it,
- 37:07Speaker 4: FOREHEAD meat.
- 37:12Speaker 3: I mean.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Nothing else you can make a big batch at. Seafood, stock.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Yeah and, you know for some people looking at a,
- 37:19Speaker 4: fish head it does not conjure up like that REAL
- 37:23Speaker 4: like i want to. Eat, you yeah, you KNOW but
- 37:27Speaker 4: i mean people people cook hold. THE head i mean,
- 37:31Speaker 4: For me, FOR ME i i associate looking at like
- 37:36Speaker 4: fish head soup with you get in. My BELLY but
- 37:39Speaker 4: i did not make THAT because i didn't. Have time
- 37:41Speaker 4: and instead we are going to show some photos From
- 37:46Speaker 4: the canada goose stir FRY that i made on A
- 37:50Speaker 4: Recent Meat eater. Roasts episode so This Was yannie's canada Goose.
- 37:57Speaker 4: FROM arkansas i believe this is the FIRST time i
- 38:01Speaker 4: had ever. Cooked goose i've never, hunted goose and this,
- 38:05Speaker 4: IS probably i, don't know the Third time i've, eaten
- 38:08Speaker 4: goose so not that much experience with. The bird, and
- 38:12Speaker 4: uh it was a really. Beautiful breast and stir fry
- 38:17Speaker 4: IS something, I mean I guess i didn't really get,
- 38:19Speaker 4: creativity points but sturfries IS something i whip up. At
- 38:23Speaker 4: home it's, pretty easy AND so i, used soy a
- 38:30Speaker 4: little bit of OYSTER sauce i think was in. The
- 38:33Speaker 4: kitchenfries do it.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Perfect for roast because you can just kind of throw it.
- 38:40Speaker 4: Together exactly you can throw any sortied sauce or, sauce
- 38:46Speaker 4: combination uh for. A sturfry so how it. Turned out
- 38:51Speaker 4: so one of the judges was my Dear Friend, linda
- 38:55Speaker 4: huang who Is a, chinese Chef and YANNI thought i
- 39:00Speaker 4: was making a stir fry, TO like i, don't know
- 39:02Speaker 4: make it easy. For MYSELF but i told him it
- 39:04Speaker 4: was actually going to be more Difficult because linda's standards
- 39:07Speaker 4: would be. Very high so she was she. WAS surprised
- 39:10Speaker 4: i was, surprised myself but she was surprised that it
- 39:13Speaker 4: turned out that it turned out as. IT did i
- 39:16Speaker 4: just tried to not overcook.
- 39:17Speaker 2: The meat THAT'S what i was.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Ask challenge it, was tender and SHE had I don't
- 39:23Speaker 4: i think that was the first time She's eating canada
- 39:25Speaker 4: goose and she said if she, didn't know she she
- 39:27Speaker 4: would have thought it was, Like, beef.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Yeah nice what's your garnish? On, that oh.
- 39:32Speaker 4: There's some scallions and, sesame seeds and then the vegetables
- 39:38Speaker 4: were it was yellow pepper and. Some, mushroom yeah it.
- 39:41Speaker 5: Looks delicious tough to beat, That.
- 39:43Speaker 2: One, corey oh.
- 39:47Speaker 5: Let's see well, Wait here, I'M sorry.
- 39:50Speaker 3: I couldn't remember how many. Pictures coincidentwave.
- 39:56Speaker 11: This is here.
- 39:57Speaker 5: We go, oh, yeah man that looks good, Right now
- 40:01Speaker 5: i've made a Black bear california crunch rap supreme black?
- 40:05Speaker 2: Bear burger is?
- 40:06Speaker 8: That?
- 40:06Speaker 2: Like what kind?
- 40:07Speaker 4: Of?
- 40:07Speaker 5: LIKE so i took a black bear shoulder roast and
- 40:11Speaker 5: braised it, for gosh nine hours. Or so kind of forgot, about,
- 40:15Speaker 5: it honestly but that was probably for.
- 40:16Speaker 2: The best the nice blaze on.
- 40:19Speaker 5: That, bear yeah from A bear i harvested. Last spring
- 40:22Speaker 5: they call that a. Chevron, chevron yeah it looks like
- 40:26Speaker 5: a wearing a. Good thing he had that going for
- 40:29Speaker 5: him because his back was rubbed off. REALLY bad i
- 40:32Speaker 5: got That late may and he had already rubbed too.
- 40:35Speaker 5: Many trees, but yeah big, old bear fifteen year old
- 40:37Speaker 5: black bear, meats delicious every single morsel. Of it but
- 40:41Speaker 5: this was the last chunk. OF it I figured i
- 40:44Speaker 5: might as well eat IT before i kill another one.
- 40:46Speaker 5: This SPRING but i tried To Copy taco Bells Crunch
- 40:51Speaker 5: wrap supreme and It's the California crunch RAP because i
- 40:54Speaker 5: threw some avocado.
- 40:55Speaker 2: In, there yeah explain the layering you got going.
- 40:57Speaker 5: On there, let's see it's bear a crispy, corn, tortilla,
- 41:03Speaker 5: cheese avocados and some hot sauce and then you just
- 41:07Speaker 5: wrap it up all pretty kind of like. A quesadilla
- 41:10Speaker 5: but there's two flour tortillas all pressed and heated and
- 41:15Speaker 5: warmed and melted. And gooey AND then i got a
- 41:17Speaker 5: little not homemade salsa to go with, it there Ripping Off.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Taco bell you don't need. Homemade, salsa oh it was
- 41:24Speaker 2: pretty easy To Outdo. Taco, bell, yeah great.
- 41:29Speaker 6: All right.
- 41:32Speaker 2: The old. Fried turkey we were talking about fried turkey
- 41:34Speaker 2: just a minute ago that there is a fried. Turkey
- 41:38Speaker 2: SANDWICH so i just you take a lobe or half
- 41:42Speaker 2: of a turkey breast and slice that against the grain
- 41:45Speaker 2: and get your cutlets and then just pound those. Things
- 41:48Speaker 2: OUT then i like to soak them in buttermilk for a,
- 41:52Speaker 2: little while and then, it's uh you throw like one
- 41:57Speaker 2: layer of the, breading on get them in a. Dry
- 42:00Speaker 2: breading then you dip them in an egg egg milk
- 42:03Speaker 2: wash and then get another layer of that breading. On
- 42:05Speaker 2: THERE and i did these in my. Deep frier you
- 42:08Speaker 2: can do them in a in a cast, iron pan,
- 42:10Speaker 2: you know with whatever half an inch of grease in.
- 42:12Speaker 2: THE bottom i did these in the. Deep, friar honestly
- 42:16Speaker 2: this is how in my family we eat most of
- 42:19Speaker 2: our turkey breast meat because my boys. Love it it
- 42:25Speaker 2: actually stretches it out more than making just a big batch,
- 42:28Speaker 2: of nuggets like we always have leftovers for extra sandwiches
- 42:33Speaker 2: from one. One lobe, very simple and it's just like
- 42:38Speaker 2: a solid meal that my. KIDS love i love. It
- 42:40Speaker 2: too and that's. A buffalo i think It's Like frank's
- 42:46Speaker 2: buffalo wing sauce.
- 42:47Speaker 3: On there, All right i'm gonna put a pole up
- 42:50Speaker 3: in the live chat. Right now who had the best
- 42:54Speaker 3: meat eat or? Menu dish Was it Krins, Stir, Fry
- 42:57Speaker 3: canada Goose, Stir Fry Corey's black California crunt Rap Or
- 43:03Speaker 3: Brodie's Fried. Turkey sandwich and.
- 43:05Speaker 2: We're just gonna come back to.
- 43:06Speaker 3: That later how about after the interview with our, next
- 43:09Speaker 3: guests we'll check.
- 43:10Speaker 5: IN there i don't know if anyone's paying attention or
- 43:11Speaker 5: they're all Talking to spencer in.
- 43:13Speaker 2: The, chat, Yes yeah spencer is always lurking, in, THERE
- 43:16Speaker 2: man i don't.
- 43:17Speaker 5: Like.
- 43:17Speaker 2: It okay our next Guest Is, Montana fish Wildlife And
- 43:25Speaker 2: park Region Six Wildlife Manager. Scott, thompson scott, YOU there
- 43:32Speaker 2: i am Mayor got welcome to, the show and thanks
- 43:35Speaker 2: for chatting with. Us, today yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 7: You bet thanks for, The.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Invite scott can you tell us about your ROLE with
- 43:42Speaker 2: fwp conducting aerial big game surveys In? Northeast, montana.
- 43:49Speaker 6: Yeah you.
- 43:49Speaker 7: BET so i am the regional wildlife Manager for. Region.
- 43:54Speaker 7: Six uh that area is a huge northeast Corner of
- 43:59Speaker 7: montana For About north dakota over to The Sweet grass
- 44:03Speaker 7: hills about halfway over to. The front so my ROLE
- 44:08Speaker 7: is i have the privilege of leading a team of.
- 44:11Speaker 7: Wildlife biologists they get to do most of the fun
- 44:15Speaker 7: work in the field in the backseat of the supercub.
- 44:18Speaker 7: Counting critters in my, PREVIOUS life i did a lot
- 44:23Speaker 7: of that for about FOURTEEN years i was an area biologist. As, well,
- 44:27Speaker 7: so yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 2: And you guys do those aerial big game surveys like
- 44:32Speaker 2: late winter? Early spring is that typically the time you're
- 44:35Speaker 2: out there. Doing, that.
- 44:38Speaker 7: Yeah, it varies but that is right for most of
- 44:41Speaker 7: our big game species except, for antelope which are spring or,
- 44:46Speaker 7: excuse me summer surveys where we're trying to get an
- 44:51Speaker 7: idea of fawn production and so we can react to
- 44:56Speaker 7: changes in the population for the upcoming fall.
- 44:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Away Gotcha, uh so when when these biologists are going
- 45:03Speaker 2: out in, the plane uh to do to? Do account
- 45:08Speaker 2: are they focused On one they're they're like each flight
- 45:12Speaker 2: has the goal of doing a survey for one species
- 45:17Speaker 2: or are they kind of gathering into all the information
- 45:20Speaker 2: they can or what's kind of the process most?
- 45:25Speaker 7: Of them most of the surveys are designed to collect
- 45:28Speaker 7: data on. One species so, for instance some of the
- 45:33Speaker 7: pictures here are during winter, elk surveys And The missouri
- 45:38Speaker 7: river breaks of course at high elevation in. Those photos
- 45:42Speaker 7: but uh so the primary target and, Is elk but
- 45:47Speaker 7: biologists do record what we would, call incidentals sightings or
- 45:53Speaker 7: observations of, meal deer, you know other. Species encountered uh the,
- 46:00Speaker 7: elk survey we do also a bighorn cheap survey at the,
- 46:04Speaker 7: same time so that is a dual.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Purpose survey, But gotcha and what's the actual? Counting process,
- 46:12Speaker 2: look like like is are they sitting up there with
- 46:14Speaker 2: a clicker, or like how are they doing the? Actual
- 46:18Speaker 2: counting are these are these guys just good enough they
- 46:20Speaker 2: can like look at that photo right there and, be,
- 46:22Speaker 2: like man that's like thirty.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Right, THERE.
- 46:28Speaker 7: Yeah i challenge you to count elk once they get
- 46:32Speaker 7: past about thirty to fifty in. A. Bunch. Yeah it
- 46:38Speaker 7: so there's a couple couple things that the biologists. Will
- 46:41Speaker 7: do so, you know the idea is to get the
- 46:48Speaker 7: animals on a side profile that that helps us not
- 46:53Speaker 7: only count how, many animals but then they're. Also classifying
- 46:57Speaker 7: they're looking for how many calves are in, the bunch
- 46:59Speaker 7: how many bulls or bucks or in. The bunch so
- 47:03Speaker 7: oftentimes it's finding a group of animals and. Circling them
- 47:09Speaker 7: if they're in a super cub, for example if they're in,
- 47:13Speaker 7: a helicopter you're kind of moving with, the herd but
- 47:18Speaker 7: both trying to count and trying, to classify and so
- 47:22Speaker 7: it's a bit of. A process you might spend, you
- 47:26Speaker 7: know five ten minutes with a group until you really
- 47:28Speaker 7: get a sense of what's in. The group sometimes photography.
- 47:33Speaker 2: CAN help i was going to ask you if that plays,
- 47:36Speaker 2: a role like you come back later and count from
- 47:39Speaker 2: pictures that.
- 47:40Speaker 7: You're, taking, yeah, yeah yeah it's hard to get the
- 47:44Speaker 7: classification data from. A photo sometimes, you can but the
- 47:48Speaker 7: photo really helps. Verify that, you know it's, a snapshot
- 47:52Speaker 7: you can. Count it when you have almost four hundred
- 47:56Speaker 7: elk in a group and you're trying to count that
- 47:58Speaker 7: and they're, all moving that's.
- 48:00Speaker 5: Pretty.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Difficult gotcha so one of the main other than getting
- 48:06Speaker 2: the lowdown on how these, surveys works the main reason
- 48:10Speaker 2: we wanted to talk to you Today IS montana fwp
- 48:15Speaker 2: was recently forced to close hunting for bighorn Sheep in
- 48:20Speaker 2: district six twenty two after a really drastic decline in
- 48:26Speaker 2: cheap numbers in that unit in. Recent years how many
- 48:32Speaker 2: sheep were in, that unit say ten, Years.
- 48:35Speaker 3: Ago.
- 48:39Speaker 7: Yeah so sheep numbers in that district have ranged between
- 48:45Speaker 7: one hundred and fifty and three hundred animals that we
- 48:49Speaker 7: observe on. The survey our population objective is about two,
- 48:57Speaker 7: hundred animals so obviously it kind of varies through.
- 49:01Speaker 4: The.
- 49:01Speaker 7: Years yep so ten years ago we had over three
- 49:03Speaker 7: interren animals and.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Gotchaulation things but things were looking good, back then maybe
- 49:09Speaker 2: too many in.
- 49:10Speaker 7: That, unit, yeah yeah that really signaled to us to
- 49:14Speaker 7: be a bit, more aggressive especially with you harvest and
- 49:17Speaker 7: provide a lot of either sex or ram harvest at,
- 49:21Speaker 7: the time and so we were, pretty aggressive allowing quite
- 49:24Speaker 7: a few hunters access to hunting there and trying to
- 49:27Speaker 7: bring it back to about two, hundred cheap which we
- 49:29Speaker 7: did for a period of about five or.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Six years and so how many when you went out
- 49:36Speaker 2: there to do your survey. This spring i'm sure you
- 49:39Speaker 2: guys that were already aware that there was a decline,
- 49:41Speaker 2: going on but this spring when you did your, aerial
- 49:44Speaker 2: survey how many sheep did you guys see in. That, unit.
- 49:49Speaker 7: Yeah we were prepared for, a reduction but probably not
- 49:53Speaker 7: what we saw and that was.
- 49:55Speaker 3: Five wow.
- 49:56Speaker 7: Five rams no hunters us fall had kind of had
- 50:02Speaker 7: some trouble, finding cheap so we knew something was.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Going on and what is? Going on what's the main
- 50:09Speaker 2: driver for the decline in? That, unit.
- 50:13Speaker 7: Well it is, Disease related uh. You know we we
- 50:17Speaker 7: were able to get some samples from both hunter harvested
- 50:20Speaker 7: sheep last fall an additional sample. This spring pneumonia is
- 50:27Speaker 7: a driver here visible pneumonia in the lungs of several
- 50:32Speaker 7: animals in some recent lab work from. Those samples, you
- 50:39Speaker 7: know there's a number of bacterias and pathogens in, the
- 50:44Speaker 7: herd and we've known that, for years but this is
- 50:47Speaker 7: the first time. We've detected one of the key ones
- 50:50Speaker 7: is michael plasma, ova pneumonia so we did detect that
- 50:55Speaker 7: in the herd for the. First time, so yeah it's
- 50:59Speaker 7: it's a. Complex thing there's a lot of a lot
- 51:01Speaker 7: of bugs that can affect sheep and. Respiratory health and
- 51:05Speaker 7: it looks like you hit them hard in six two.
- 51:08Speaker 2: And and so the habitat there is in good shape,
- 51:13Speaker 2: like that that's not playing a role at. All, here yeah.
- 51:17Speaker 7: Habitet's good, you know we see the ups and downs
- 51:20Speaker 7: with drought of rights a couple of years of dry
- 51:23Speaker 7: conditions and we see lamb production suppressed during those times
- 51:27Speaker 7: and then they. Bounce back, but yep so no overlying
- 51:31Speaker 7: habitat issues that.
- 51:32Speaker 2: We see So Like i've i've spent a little bit
- 51:35Speaker 2: of time up in that part of, the STATE and
- 51:39Speaker 2: i know there's, sheep nearby you know where these sheep
- 51:44Speaker 2: kind of dropped off. To nothing is there a concern
- 51:49Speaker 2: about the sheep and units that are adjacent to six,
- 51:52Speaker 2: twenty two where these these sheep at a really. Tough, time.
- 51:58Speaker 7: Yeah. It, Did this this die off did cause us
- 52:05Speaker 7: to do just a quick check on those, neighboring herds
- 52:08Speaker 7: and it looks like we're not seeing the same thing. Happen,
- 52:12Speaker 7: there thankfully we have a pretty. Good separation there's about
- 52:16Speaker 7: forty to fifty miles between, those populations so we can
- 52:23Speaker 7: expect to have minimal interchange between those populations, of sheep
- 52:28Speaker 7: but it. Can happen rams do go wandering, at times
- 52:31Speaker 7: but at this point we don't have any major concerns for.
- 52:36Speaker 7: Those populations.
- 52:39Speaker 2: Is there any hope for recovery in six? Twenty two
- 52:43Speaker 2: will those well we'll sheep from those adjacent units maybe,
- 52:47Speaker 2: fill in or will you guys maybe get active and
- 52:51Speaker 2: putting sheep back? In there are you just gonna like
- 52:54Speaker 2: kind of see. What, HAPPENS.
- 52:58Speaker 7: Yeah a common question and. GOOD question i would say
- 53:03Speaker 7: there's a lot of decision points between.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Here, and yeah what's The early.
- 53:07Speaker 7: We're probably on about step two of ten and where
- 53:11Speaker 7: do we go with? This HERD and i think at
- 53:13Speaker 7: this point we really need to know more about, you
- 53:17Speaker 7: know where did work you know them ov it appears
- 53:22Speaker 7: to be a, new strain and so learning more about
- 53:26Speaker 7: what does?
- 53:26Speaker 3: That mean.
- 53:29Speaker 7: And then there are a few individuals and we've learned
- 53:31Speaker 7: of a few other individual sheep that hunters and recreationists
- 53:36Speaker 7: have seen. Out there so now there's a handful of,
- 53:39Speaker 7: sheep left so it would be good to know what
- 53:42Speaker 7: is what is their status before we take any. Additional.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Steps, gotcha well thanks a lot for talking. TO us
- 53:52Speaker 2: i know this is not necessarily the happiest discussion, to
- 53:56Speaker 2: have but it's important for people to know what's going on.
- 53:59Speaker 2: OUT there, i mean you're talking about like a pretty pretty,
- 54:04Speaker 2: well known pretty well regarded area for. Sheep hunting it's
- 54:08Speaker 2: a place people, you know dream about drawing a big.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Horn tag so hopefully the future's got got some bright
- 54:15Speaker 2: spots in it for those sheep.
- 54:16Speaker 7: Up, there, yeah YEAH and i hope. So too, and,
- 54:20Speaker 7: yeah well we'll certainly be working hard to see if
- 54:22Speaker 7: we can't recover that, that heard it's still, good habitat
- 54:28Speaker 7: and you know we have we have a lot of
- 54:31Speaker 7: support to. Do.
- 54:32Speaker 2: That, Great, great Well, thanks scott it's been good talking,
- 54:35Speaker 2: to YOU and i hope you have a, Great Day,
- 54:37Speaker 2: Thanks scott thank.
- 54:38Speaker 7: You guys, All, right.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Phil who made the best food in?
- 54:44Speaker 3: THIS room i would love to let, you know let's end.

- 55:26Speaker 3: Questions yeah i'm going to answer this one for ban
- 55:29Speaker 3: unless current has some uh specific examples From The meat,

- 55:45Speaker 3: ET cetera i would direct you to The wonderful Cutting the,
- 55:48Speaker 3: distance podcast which is hosted by our Good, Friend jason Phelps.
