- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo. Before getting started, I
- 0:07Speaker 1: want to thank Tim Kirkchin for hosting on Monday with Alana.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And I'm going to admitute Alana admitt it right off
- 0:14Speaker 1: the bat. I've got a little bit of a WBC hangover.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I'm going to south through today. I'm playing hurt a
- 0:19Speaker 1: little bit. But man, that was something else.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I tell you it has come and gone.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I hate that every three years, but what a blast
- 0:27Speaker 3: that it was. And I tell you what, Ken, it
- 0:30Speaker 3: was a lot of fanfare, a lot of celebrations, but
- 0:33Speaker 3: some moments really stood out.
- 0:34Speaker 2: What for you?
- 0:36Speaker 1: Well, Thank goodness. By the way, it's only three years.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I don't know if I can do it every year,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but let's start with one that I know we've both identified.
- 0:44Speaker 1: You take it away, all.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Right, Show Hey Otani.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I mean, and I know everyone thinks I'm a Dodger homer,
- 0:49Speaker 3: but I think you just have to be a baseball
- 0:51Speaker 3: fan to appreciate. Maybe I don't even have to be
- 0:53Speaker 3: a baseball fan to appreciate with show, Hey Otani not
- 0:56Speaker 3: only getting emotional pre tournament when he saw the Japanese flag.
- 1:01Speaker 3: It was a beautiful, seamless transition from the flag though
- 1:03Speaker 3: Tani's emotion. But the grand Slam, the batflip, I mean,
- 1:08Speaker 3: just everything that this guy does, tremendous numbers of course
- 1:12Speaker 3: during the WBC that just has carried on from last
- 1:15Speaker 3: season with the Dodgers. This matters, guys, the base of
- 1:19Speaker 3: the game, both domestically and internationally. Show Heyo Tani. It
- 1:24Speaker 3: was pretty pretty sweet to see ken a lota.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I'll go with another one from the Japan side of
- 1:30Speaker 1: the tournament, the pool in Japan. This was when the
- 1:34Speaker 1: Czech electrician Andreas Satoria got an ovation in Japan. They
- 1:38Speaker 1: knew it was his final game. Now, the backstory with
- 1:41Speaker 1: Satoria is not just that he's an electrician, but that
- 1:44Speaker 1: he struck out Otani in the twenty twenty three WBC
- 1:48Speaker 1: And it was just a really sweet moment and he
- 1:50Speaker 1: stood on the field, he took it all in. It
- 1:53Speaker 1: was really just touching to see how the Japanese fans
- 1:57Speaker 1: were embracing this player from the Czech repub or Chechia,
- 2:01Speaker 1: i should say, And it was one of the more
- 2:04Speaker 1: heartwarming memories that will all take from the tournament.
- 2:08Speaker 3: It just goes to show you that just because you know,
- 2:10Speaker 3: you don't have to be the size of Aaron Judge
- 2:13Speaker 3: to make an impact in this game. I mean, this
- 2:15Speaker 3: is a very non assuming, unassuming person, and he delivered
- 2:20Speaker 3: brilliantly in both of the World Baseball Classics that he
- 2:22Speaker 3: was in. Somebody that has a bit more of a
- 2:24Speaker 3: well known name, Ken Vinnie pas Quentino obviously plays for
- 2:28Speaker 3: the Kansas City Royals, but he was the absolute ring
- 2:31Speaker 3: leader of Team Italy and being able to obviously have
- 2:36Speaker 3: the three home runs in one game, and then the
- 2:39Speaker 3: espresso shots for each home run, and then the double
- 2:43Speaker 3: kisses and all of the things. We know that that
- 2:45Speaker 3: Ned Colletti of course was the architect of the team
- 2:47Speaker 3: in terms of as the general manager, but Vinnie pass
- 2:50Speaker 3: Quentino really was the rallying cry for Team Italy, and
- 2:55Speaker 3: the attention paid to Team Italy and baseball well has
- 3:01Speaker 3: gone up leaps and bounds because of this tournament and
- 3:04Speaker 3: kind of the Cinderella story of what Team Italy was
- 3:06Speaker 3: supposed to do, all led by Vinnie Pasquentino.
- 3:09Speaker 1: A lot of you're absolutely right, Team Italy in many
- 3:11Speaker 1: ways was the story of the tournament. This was our Cinderella,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and those guys were a riot with the espresso chugging
- 3:18Speaker 1: and everything else that they were doing. The Armani jackets.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I remember at the start of the tournament. Initially the
- 3:25Speaker 1: espresso was too hot and the trainers of the athletic
- 3:29Speaker 1: trainers of Team Italy kind of had to take over
- 3:31Speaker 1: and pre make the shots so the players weren't burning
- 3:34Speaker 1: their throats. That was just a fun team to be around,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and man, what a performance they had. Now I'll go
- 3:39Speaker 1: with another one right off the bat. This is advancing
- 3:42Speaker 1: to the championship game. Bryce Harper's two run game tying
- 3:47Speaker 1: homer in the eighth inning, not just the homer, but
- 3:50Speaker 1: the full Harper effect, the trot around the bass third base,
- 3:55Speaker 1: He of course salutes coming around third and Nanny points
- 3:59Speaker 1: to the US flag on his jersey, and then coming
- 4:02Speaker 1: home he pumps his fist in a big way. At
- 4:04Speaker 1: that moment, so many of us thought, Okay, US is
- 4:09Speaker 1: going to figure this out. They haven't hit really the
- 4:11Speaker 1: way they should have the entire tournament, but they're gonna
- 4:14Speaker 1: get there. And it didn't happen. And it didn't happen.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Why because of the team of course that they faced
- 4:20Speaker 1: and Team Venezuela what a tremendous run to the WBC title.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Their first WBC title, it was their first final, and
- 4:29Speaker 1: you saw throughout the tournament, but especially that final night
- 4:34Speaker 1: all of the emotions on display. And this Bryce Harper
- 4:36Speaker 1: as well, greeting the members of Team Venezuela after the game.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But the Venezuelan passion that we saw and the emotion
- 4:45Speaker 1: that we saw, just the way that they played, the
- 4:48Speaker 1: way they went about it. It was a lot for me,
- 4:50Speaker 1: one of the cooler things that I can remember in
- 4:54Speaker 1: any ballpark. And I'll give you a funny story too,
- 4:56Speaker 1: and a lot of you'll appreciate this as a former
- 4:58Speaker 1: sideline reporter during the Venezuela Italy game the semi final,
- 5:03Speaker 1: when they made their run. I think it was in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the eighth inning. I can't remember exactly, but Venezuela of
- 5:08Speaker 1: course got that one inning. They got it really going.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Crowd was going nuts in Miami. There's a ton of
- 5:12Speaker 1: Venezuelan's in Miami. And I'm standing in the photo pit
- 5:17Speaker 1: where I always am, and you have contact with fans.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They're right behind you. Know, there's usually a netting that
- 5:23Speaker 1: separates the reporters and the photographers from the fans, but
- 5:27Speaker 1: you're right there. And at one point when that rally
- 5:30Speaker 1: was going on, there's stuff coming out of the stands,
- 5:33Speaker 1: water and beer and peanuts, and I'm getting nail and
- 5:37Speaker 1: I turned around just kind of looked around and this
- 5:39Speaker 1: Venezuelan and fans said, Ken, have you ever seen anything
- 5:43Speaker 1: like this? And the answer, of course was no, I
- 5:45Speaker 1: had never seen anything like it. And congratulations the team
- 5:48Speaker 1: venezuela amazing performance and just cool to see how they
- 5:54Speaker 1: reacted and how much it meant to them. It meant
- 5:57Speaker 1: so much.
- 5:58Speaker 3: It's such a beautiful tournament and the emotion was so real.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And I love what you said about Bryce Harper. Obviously
- 6:04Speaker 3: he was the offense in the final game for Team USA,
- 6:07Speaker 3: but pointing to the United States flag when he's rounding
- 6:09Speaker 3: the bases, and we all thought that would be a
- 6:10Speaker 3: lasting moment in a victory for the United States, but
- 6:14Speaker 3: you had mentioned it quickly, Ken, when Bryce Harper went
- 6:16Speaker 3: and congratulated each member of the Venezuelan team, I thought
- 6:19Speaker 3: that was such a class act. Another moment that stood
- 6:21Speaker 3: out to me and we didn't even discuss in our
- 6:24Speaker 3: production meeting, was when Team USA sent Team USA Hockey
- 6:28Speaker 3: sent Team USA Baseball all of the game warn jerseys,
- 6:31Speaker 3: and you know, it's like, I think it was PCA
- 6:33Speaker 3: that had Jack Hughes's jersey, and seeing the guys walk
- 6:36Speaker 3: in with the hockey sweaters, I thought was such a
- 6:39Speaker 3: cool moment. Because we've talked about it at length Ken
- 6:42Speaker 3: how the WBC some guys say perhaps it's a little
- 6:46Speaker 3: bit more important than a World Series championship, and how
- 6:49Speaker 3: I would like to see baseball back of the Olympics
- 6:52Speaker 3: with major league players in the Olympics. It doesn't matter
- 6:55Speaker 3: what sport it is when you're watching the Olympics, right,
- 6:58Speaker 3: I always go back to when they're doing the cross
- 7:01Speaker 3: country skiing and they're shooting. I apologize, I don't know
- 7:03Speaker 3: the name of the sport, but you're watching for the jersey.
- 7:06Speaker 3: You're not watching for the sport. And I think that's
- 7:08Speaker 3: what makes this so unbelievable to watch, is when you
- 7:11Speaker 3: put on a USA jersey or Venezuela jersey, your team
- 7:14Speaker 3: Italy or Brazil or you know, Chetsia or whatever. It
- 7:17Speaker 3: is so important to these players. So that really stood
- 7:20Speaker 3: out to me too. But when you're talking about Venezuela
- 7:22Speaker 3: in general. You talk to him after the game, can
- 7:25Speaker 3: A you henne O Suarez with the emotion he has
- 7:28Speaker 3: the Venezuelan flag draped over him coming out of the
- 7:31Speaker 3: dugout Palencia. Before he even threw the final out of
- 7:35Speaker 3: the game. Can he had tears on the mound coming
- 7:38Speaker 3: from his eyes. We all know that baseball is a
- 7:43Speaker 3: product of levity for people. It's an escape for people.
- 7:46Speaker 3: We all know what's happened to Venezuela in terms of
- 7:49Speaker 3: civil unrest over the course of the last five, six, seven,
- 7:52Speaker 3: eight years. But for Venezuela to be able to say
- 7:54Speaker 3: that they're the best in baseball, at the emotions that
- 7:57Speaker 3: were shown and the path that they took to get
- 7:59Speaker 3: h I tell you it was a very special moment.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I'm so psyched that you were able to be their
- 8:05Speaker 3: phenomenal coverage all around the board, and I can't wait
- 8:08Speaker 3: for the next one.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Well thanks, Alana. It was a privilege and a pleasure.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It was just so much fun. And I always tell
- 8:15Speaker 1: people I remember saying this before the tournament. I believe
- 8:18Speaker 1: on our show that if you don't like it, I
- 8:21Speaker 1: get it. If you don't believe that it should be
- 8:23Speaker 1: taking place in spring training when we're getting ready for
- 8:25Speaker 1: the major league season. I understand that concern, that criticism,
- 8:28Speaker 1: but what I always tell people is just watch the games.
- 8:31Speaker 1: The games are amazing, and we saw that again in
- 8:34Speaker 1: this WBC.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Now back to the major league portion of our program
- 8:38Speaker 4: and our schedule. We've got some news out of Blue
- 8:41Speaker 4: Jays camp this morning, and it's disturbing news, not necessarily surprising.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Treya Savage, the great rookie who had that amazing run
- 8:49Speaker 4: in the postseason last year, is going to start the
- 8:51Speaker 4: season on the injured list with a shoulder impingement.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Now they've been slow playing with him. They feel he's
- 8:58Speaker 1: going to be okay. But this is the fourth Blue
- 9:01Speaker 1: Jays starting pitcher to go on the IL. Or who
- 9:04Speaker 1: will start the season on the IL Shane Bieber, of course,
- 9:08Speaker 1: he has yet to throw off a mound four on
- 9:10Speaker 1: fatigue is his situation. Jose Berrios, he has a stress
- 9:14Speaker 1: fractor in his elbow. Boden Francis has already undergone season
- 9:18Speaker 1: ending UCL surgery, So they're left with a rotation that
- 9:22Speaker 1: is still pretty good. Don't get me wrong. It's Gossman
- 9:25Speaker 1: and Cease and Scherzer and Cody Ponce and Eric Lauer,
- 9:28Speaker 1: who was feeling he was going to get left out
- 9:31Speaker 1: early in camp and now you're the fifth started out.
- 9:33Speaker 1: We need you, buddy. So that's where the Blue Jays are.
- 9:36Speaker 5: It's not ideal, obviously, but what they'll try to do
- 9:39Speaker 5: is obviously get through with the rotation pieces that they have,
- 9:43Speaker 5: and then as these players come back from their injuries,
- 9:47Speaker 5: they should be in a better place, assuming, of course,
- 9:50Speaker 5: no one else gets hurt.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right about the remainder of the rotation.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Can thank goodness that Dylan Cease went there right, Thank
- 9:59Speaker 3: god that Max Shr's are really wanted to go back
- 10:02Speaker 3: to Toronto obviously. Kevin Gossman just said yesterday on foul
- 10:05Speaker 3: Territory because foul Territory was at Blue Jay's camp, he'd
- 10:08Speaker 3: love to finish his career in Toronto.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So they still have some good guys there.
- 10:13Speaker 3: But it's a shame to hear that the left shoulder
- 10:15Speaker 3: impigment with excuse me, with your savage is a right
- 10:19Speaker 3: shoulder impingement rather with you savage is happening.
- 10:22Speaker 5: All right?
- 10:22Speaker 3: Another bit of news, if you will say a Suzuki,
- 10:25Speaker 3: do you have an update with him and the Cubs can.
- 10:28Speaker 1: No the Athletics. Patrick Mooney has reported that they're continuing
- 10:31Speaker 1: to evaluate him and it's a strange posterior cruciate living.
- 10:37Speaker 1: It's obviously not ideal, but Craig Counsel believes that it's
- 10:41Speaker 1: actually good news. You see they tweet from Patrick there yesterday.
- 10:44Speaker 1: The club is going to wait until the weekend before
- 10:46Speaker 1: making a decision on his Opening day availability. Opening day
- 10:49Speaker 1: is overrated. If the guy's not ready for opening day,
- 10:52Speaker 1: no harm, no fouls, can start the season in five
- 10:56Speaker 1: days and ten days, whatever. But as long as he's
- 10:58Speaker 1: not going to miss a significant amount of time, that
- 11:00Speaker 1: is good news. The other significant injury in this tournament
- 11:04Speaker 1: was to the White Sox catcher Kyle Tiel, who was
- 11:06Speaker 1: playing for Team Italy. But overall, by and large, there
- 11:10Speaker 1: weren't many injuries in this tournament. Now, could there be
- 11:13Speaker 1: a carryover effect with some of the pitchers, yes, of course,
- 11:17Speaker 1: But for the most part, that fear that all teams
- 11:20Speaker 1: have about their players getting hurt, those fears were not realized.
- 11:24Speaker 1: And as much as the team sit on the WBC
- 11:28Speaker 1: managers and coaches to protect their guys, seems like the
- 11:32Speaker 1: WC managers and coaches did a pretty good job, and
- 11:35Speaker 1: of course some of this is luck as well, and
- 11:37Speaker 1: of course injuries happen in spring training as well. I
- 11:40Speaker 1: always kind of get amused by all the worry and
- 11:44Speaker 1: all the pressure that the Major league clubs put on
- 11:47Speaker 1: the WBC clubs. I don't know that the major league
- 11:50Speaker 1: clubs do such a great job keeping their players healthy,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and yet they're in a constant panic about the WBC.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Honestly, Ken, we've talked about this before.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Some of the wacky injuries that have happened to guys
- 12:01Speaker 3: Chris Sale riding a bike clip barm has fallen up
- 12:03Speaker 3: the stairs with a rack of beer on his back,
- 12:06Speaker 3: or whatever the heck it was.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Things happen.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But getting out of the WBC relatively unscathed, I will
- 12:14Speaker 3: take that as a win. Fair territory with Ken, Rosenthal continues.
- 12:18Speaker 3: In just a moment, we're going to be back from
- 12:20Speaker 3: with a few words, and we're going to be back

- 13:30Speaker 2: All right, we.
- 13:30Speaker 3: Welcome you back to Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal Ken.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Our first question here on Grill and Ken is from
- 13:35Speaker 3: Elvis Santoyo. When discussing a player's decision to participate in
- 13:40Speaker 3: the World Baseball Classic, the focus tends to be on
- 13:42Speaker 3: the potential negatives, makes sense, risk of injury, leaving the
- 13:45Speaker 3: team to schedule those types of things. What are some
- 13:47Speaker 3: of the positive things that are less discussed effects.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I love that. Take the silver lining.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I love that too, Elvis. And it's a great point
- 13:56Speaker 1: you're making, because there is a lot of positive now.
- 13:59Speaker 1: The biggest positive obviously for players is they get to
- 14:02Speaker 1: play for their countries, and that means a lot to
- 14:04Speaker 1: so many of them, including the US players. We'll get
- 14:07Speaker 1: to that in our next segment. But another positive for players,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and American players have spoken about this, perhaps a little
- 14:15Speaker 1: bit more in depth than other players from other countries,
- 14:20Speaker 1: the idea of being with so many quality players, sharing ideas,
- 14:23Speaker 1: sharing information, being around each other and just kind of
- 14:27Speaker 1: vibing off each other, for lack of a better phrase.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Young players learn from the older players. Bobby with Junior,
- 14:33Speaker 1: for instance, in twenty twenty three, learned from the veterans
- 14:36Speaker 1: Roman Anthony. This year, of course, he played a pivotal role,
- 14:39Speaker 1: was all tournament, but just being around Aaron Judge and
- 14:43Speaker 1: Kyle Schwarber for him, that was a big deal. So, yes,
- 14:47Speaker 1: there are a lot of positives to playing in the WBC.
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'll give you one more. Carlos Santana had just joined
- 14:53Speaker 1: the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, and the Diamondbacks allowed him
- 14:57Speaker 1: to play even without insurance because they they wanted him
- 15:00Speaker 1: to be with Martee and Perdomo on the Dominican Republic team.
- 15:03Speaker 1: These are new teammates. They wanted them to get to
- 15:05Speaker 1: know each other. So there are all kinds of positives.
- 15:08Speaker 1: And there's one more I'll mention too. I know I
- 15:10Speaker 1: keep saying one more. Griffin Jacks mentioned this to me
- 15:13Speaker 1: that you have to prepare quickly obviously for the WBC,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and once you get in the game action. He felt
- 15:20Speaker 1: he wasn't necessarily ready, but he got ready real quick.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So it does prepare players for the season in that sense, Ken.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Could the WBC be any sort of auditioning platform for players,
- 15:31Speaker 3: Perhaps not on major league not on a Major League
- 15:34Speaker 3: Baseball roster, but think about the eyes of the world
- 15:37Speaker 3: on all of the games and all of the players.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Perhaps if a guy is trying to make his way
- 15:40Speaker 3: to the big league level or another professional team someplace,
- 15:43Speaker 3: the KBO or whatever it is, could it be a
- 15:46Speaker 3: kind of a jumping off point for a guy trying
- 15:48Speaker 3: to get a.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Job a lot And that is a great point too,
- 15:50Speaker 1: And I'll give you two examples of this, John Birdie
- 15:53Speaker 1: playing for Team Italy, the infielder veteran was without a job,
- 15:57Speaker 1: still without a job, but his performance, well, maybe that
- 16:01Speaker 1: will get him a minor league deal somewhere as the
- 16:03Speaker 1: season gets closer. And the other one, this is not
- 16:06Speaker 1: major league related, but it was really interesting that first
- 16:09Speaker 1: US Brazil game. Joseph Contreras, the son of Jose Contreras.
- 16:14Speaker 1: He got Aaron Judge to ground into a double play.
- 16:16Speaker 1: He's seventeen years old. Did he raise his draft stock? Oh?
- 16:19Speaker 1: I believe he raised his draft stock. So there are
- 16:22Speaker 1: all kinds of benefits. Now, he obviously is not a
- 16:24Speaker 1: major league player. It's a different scenario. But you get
- 16:27Speaker 1: what I'm saying here, and a lot of you're right that.
- 16:31Speaker 1: I'm sure there are certain players who improve their standings
- 16:34Speaker 1: in their organization. Some of those Team Italy young players
- 16:37Speaker 1: certainly did, and yes, there are benefits in that way.
- 16:41Speaker 2: The E line wants to know.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Ken In regards to Rocky shortstop Ezekiel Tovar's value has
- 16:46Speaker 3: it grown due to his WBC performance. He had a
- 16:50Speaker 3: great tournament.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Tovar is a player who is coming on, and he
- 16:54Speaker 1: reported to camp in great shape, looking really athletic, and
- 16:58Speaker 1: he's a guy that was all ready an emerging star.
- 17:01Speaker 1: But he played with a certain level of intensity in
- 17:03Speaker 1: this tournament, as a lot of players did that. Maybe
- 17:06Speaker 1: we haven't seen to the same extent. It's a lot
- 17:08Speaker 1: different playing for your country than for the Colorado Rockies,
- 17:11Speaker 1: let's face it. So I expect Tovar, who already has
- 17:15Speaker 1: won a goal glove, to continue improving offensively and to
- 17:18Speaker 1: be someone we're talking about in the All Star conversations
- 17:21Speaker 1: going forward. He is a unique player. The Rockies love him,
- 17:25Speaker 1: love his maturity, love the way he goes about it,
- 17:28Speaker 1: his professionalism. So yes, he is a rising star.
- 17:32Speaker 3: I think the Rockies are going to be better this
- 17:34Speaker 3: year than they have been in recent past. They have
- 17:36Speaker 3: some new ownership, not ownership, but leadership. I'llbe it, same owner,
- 17:39Speaker 3: some same lineage, but looking for some outside ideas, which
- 17:43Speaker 3: I think is going to be good for them. Okay,
- 17:45Speaker 3: another question here, Ken is in regards to Connor Griffin.
- 17:49Speaker 3: We keep talking about this young man. He was just
- 17:51Speaker 3: on the show a couple of days ago on foul
- 17:53Speaker 3: Territory when we were at Pirates Camp. Is Connor Griffin,
- 17:57Speaker 3: nineteen years old? The best prospect that we have ever seen.
- 18:01Speaker 3: That's an interesting adjective.
- 18:04Speaker 1: That's a strong comment, and we're all always victims of
- 18:08Speaker 1: recency bias. Now, is he one of the better prospects
- 18:11Speaker 1: we've seen?
- 18:12Speaker 5: Yes?
- 18:12Speaker 1: Is he kind of at the level where Trout and
- 18:15Speaker 1: Griffy were at the same stages of their careers, just
- 18:18Speaker 1: in terms of not hype, but the way teams view them. Yeah,
- 18:22Speaker 1: I would say he is. Now. That doesn't mean he's
- 18:24Speaker 1: going to break with the Pirates and open the season
- 18:26Speaker 1: with them, but there are teams that have internal metrics
- 18:30Speaker 1: on him based on his minor league performance, that rate
- 18:33Speaker 1: him really highly, almost shockingly highly. I had one tell
- 18:37Speaker 1: me that he would be the fifth best shortstop in
- 18:39Speaker 1: the major leagues right now by their evaluation. That's incredible.
- 18:43Speaker 1: He hasn't played a major league game yet, So yes,
- 18:46Speaker 1: he is one of the better prospects we've seen in
- 18:48Speaker 1: some time. And whenever he gets to Pittsburgh, it's going
- 18:52Speaker 1: to be a really exciting.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Moment, all right, So more exciting perhaps or better prospect
- 18:57Speaker 3: than Steven Strasburg or Paul Skimes.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Both those guys are pretty big prospects, and there was
- 19:04Speaker 1: a lot of excitement over both of them. Both were
- 19:06Speaker 1: number one picks overall, and the draft Connor Griffin was
- 19:09Speaker 1: not so alta. We could make a list of guys
- 19:12Speaker 1: and those are two good ones who have been hyped
- 19:16Speaker 1: and had anticipation around them. Connor Griffin is in that category.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I don't know if he's the best prospect we've ever seen.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I don't know that you can raid him that way,
- 19:25Speaker 1: but he is in that kind of conversation that will
- 19:29Speaker 1: take place when we talk about, Okay, who were the
- 19:32Speaker 1: best prospects ever to reach the majors. Roman Anthony was
- 19:34Speaker 1: a great prospect last year when he reached the majors.
- 19:37Speaker 1: So it's kind of a subjective thing, but he is
- 19:40Speaker 1: way up there.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a man among boys, I guess in terms
- 19:44Speaker 3: of obviously his stature, his body, his physique and his
- 19:48Speaker 3: poise and just the way that he goes about his
- 19:50Speaker 3: I mean, he's nineteen years old, Kenny's already married. There's something,
- 19:53Speaker 3: you know, just a little bit more mature, it seems
- 19:55Speaker 3: about Connor Griffin.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Nice young man.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Of course, I enjoyed getting to know him a little
- 19:59Speaker 3: bit earlier this week. All right, much more to come on,
- 20:02Speaker 3: fair territory a few words after this, but we're gonna
- 20:05Speaker 3: hear a dude and dork of the week in a moment.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:10Speaker 3: D all Right, Ken, I think I'll go first on
- 20:19Speaker 3: my dude of the week. Earlier this morning, it was
- 20:22Speaker 3: announced by how He Rose, the long time radio play
- 20:25Speaker 3: by play announcer for the New York Mets, that this
- 20:28Speaker 3: season will be his last in the booth. I love
- 20:31Speaker 3: how He Rose. He's always done a tremendous job. Obviously,
- 20:34Speaker 3: he's covered the Metropolitans for decades. He's so well regarded,
- 20:38Speaker 3: pretty revered. And congratulations Howie. You deserve to go out
- 20:42Speaker 3: on your own terms and in your own way. And
- 20:44Speaker 3: we had a comment Ken in our chat from armand
- 20:48Speaker 3: is amazing how he Rose announced his last season as
- 20:50Speaker 3: Mets radio announcer. Do you have any stories with Howie?
- 20:53Speaker 3: Obviously this is someone that you've known for a long
- 20:55Speaker 3: time as well.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I actually don't I know how how he to say hello,
- 20:59Speaker 1: And obviously we've talked over the years, but I don't
- 21:02Speaker 1: have any particular stories. But a lot of what is
- 21:05Speaker 1: so cool about this is that he is revered that
- 21:08Speaker 1: fan base the New York Mets fan base loves him.
- 21:11Speaker 1: They've listening to him. He is an encyclopedia of Mets knowledge.
- 21:15Speaker 1: That's gonna be a big loss in some ways. The
- 21:17Speaker 1: institutional knowledge he has of this team, there's no one
- 21:21Speaker 1: else who will ever have that. He's been there for
- 21:24Speaker 1: all these years and it's been a joy to listen
- 21:27Speaker 1: to him. He's a class act. Everybody loves him. It's
- 21:30Speaker 1: just a great choice for Dude to the Week. I
- 21:32Speaker 1: will go with Team Venezuela's manager, Omar Lopez, who is
- 21:36Speaker 1: someone that we don't talk about much when we talk
- 21:39Speaker 1: about future managerial candidates, and yet he should be in
- 21:43Speaker 1: that conversation. And you saw what he did with this
- 21:45Speaker 1: team in the WBC. He said it was a little
- 21:47Speaker 1: bit different than some of his past teams because the guys,
- 21:51Speaker 1: the younger guys, were quieter and he wasn't so sure
- 21:54Speaker 1: about them. But obviously they got there and he got
- 21:57Speaker 1: them there. And he has a terrific personality. He's got charisma,
- 22:01Speaker 1: he has all the things you would want in a
- 22:03Speaker 1: major league manager. And I know everybody wants to hire
- 22:06Speaker 1: the next big college manager, the next thirty one year old.
- 22:09Speaker 1: How about a guy who's kind of been in the
- 22:10Speaker 1: trenches forever, a guy who has paid his dues. We've
- 22:14Speaker 1: gotten away from that. It bothers me, we've gotten away
- 22:16Speaker 1: from that. Here is a candidate who would make a
- 22:19Speaker 1: lot of sense the next time openings arise. Omar Lopez due.
- 22:23Speaker 5: To the week.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved his embrace with Francisco Cervelli after Italy
- 22:28Speaker 3: lost to Venezuela as well. All right, time now for
- 22:30Speaker 3: our dork of the week. All right, Ken, I'm going
- 22:40Speaker 3: to go to the Giants. They're gonna make their foul
- 22:43Speaker 3: poles with a Chick fil A sponsorship. Listen, I love
- 22:46Speaker 3: Chick fil A. I'm always bummed when I want Chick
- 22:48Speaker 3: fil A and it's on a Sunday because they're closed.
- 22:50Speaker 3: I love the chicken sandwich, extra pickles, It's amazing. But Ken,
- 22:53Speaker 3: there's not a Chick fil A in the ballpark. There's
- 22:56Speaker 3: not even a Chick fil A in San Francisco.
- 22:59Speaker 2: What are we doing?
- 23:01Speaker 1: I don't know what we're doing a lot, but I
- 23:02Speaker 1: know this. The Giants are going to get a check
- 23:04Speaker 1: from Chick fil A, and that's what they want a check.
- 23:07Speaker 1: So this is what drives teams, It's what drives the League.
- 23:12Speaker 1: It's what drives really the entire American economy. Everybody looking
- 23:15Speaker 1: for the next check world no different ourselves than individuals, So.
- 23:19Speaker 5: I get it.
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's just a little weird that there's no Chick fil
- 23:22Speaker 1: A available at the park or in the city.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta go to you gotta go to Oakland
- 23:28Speaker 2: to get your sandwich ken. All right, who's your dork
- 23:30Speaker 2: of the week?
- 23:31Speaker 1: My dork of the week are all of those people
- 23:34Speaker 1: out there who believe the Team USA players did not
- 23:38Speaker 1: care as much as the players from Venezuela, the players
- 23:41Speaker 1: from the Dominican Republic. No, they might not have shown
- 23:45Speaker 1: that they cared as much as those players did. They
- 23:48Speaker 1: didn't have the outward passion that we saw from the
- 23:52Speaker 1: other countries. But obviously they cared, and they cared a lot.
- 23:56Speaker 1: You saw that when they walked off the field after
- 23:58Speaker 1: getting to Meddle. Some of them were taking the metals off.
- 24:00Speaker 1: They didn't want silver, and this whole notion of the
- 24:04Speaker 1: other countries want it more. Well, I would say the
- 24:07Speaker 1: Dominican Republic probably wanted it more than the United States.
- 24:12Speaker 1: But did they win. No, they got beat by the
- 24:14Speaker 1: United States because guess what, the US guys wanted it to.
- 24:18Speaker 1: So it's so funny to me. Ten years ago, fifteen
- 24:23Speaker 1: years ago, we had the unwritten rules. We were talking
- 24:25Speaker 1: about celebrations by certain players in a negative way. Oh
- 24:29Speaker 1: my gosh, how can you do that? It's an offense
- 24:31Speaker 1: to the game. Now, if you don't do that, that's
- 24:34Speaker 1: an offense to the game.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Just stop it.
- 24:36Speaker 2: These guys can off your mind.
- 24:38Speaker 3: All you need to know, America is that we got
- 24:40Speaker 3: a massive smile and a woo out of Paul Skiings.
- 24:44Speaker 2: That's how much they care. Paul Skiin smiled. Everybody.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Thanks for getting in your questions for Ken. We appreciate it.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Ken as always, thank you for all of the insight.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Don't forget everybody. Fair Territory returns on Monday with Ken.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Until then, have a great wait. Don't forget Dodger's territory
- 24:59Speaker 3: this afternoon at three pm Eastern.
