- 0:00Speaker 1: And we're back with Dan Hurley. You've gone Men's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show, Mike chris Pino back online here thanks to
- 0:04Speaker 1: Bob Joyce for jumping in.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Coach.
- 0:06Speaker 1: You were talking about Alex Caraban in the previous segment.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Number one in the league in field goal shooting now
- 0:13Speaker 1: over fifty two percent and he plays monster minutes over
- 0:16Speaker 1: thirty three minutes a game. What's different about Alex this
- 0:20Speaker 1: year in terms of his offense? In your mind, he's
- 0:22Speaker 1: shooting it better, he seems more comfortable out there. Maybe
- 0:26Speaker 1: he's under a little less pressure, I'm guessing because you
- 0:29Speaker 1: have a deeper team.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's got a better team, so he's
- 0:33Speaker 2: just got a lot a lot better support. But you know,
- 0:37Speaker 2: he's the best player. He's he's you know, he's the
- 0:40Speaker 2: leading player. He's you know, he's the face of his team.
- 0:43Speaker 2: He's you know, he's he's the guy. And you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: I think his mindset, you know, being a you know
- 0:51Speaker 2: what he's accomplished in his career at the championship success
- 0:54Speaker 2: he's had, and you know, and then what he went
- 0:57Speaker 2: through last year just not being on a team at
- 1:00Speaker 2: quite that level. I think it's made him tougher. I
- 1:03Speaker 2: think it's it's made him better. I think it gave
- 1:05Speaker 2: him things to work on in the offseason. He's gotten
- 1:08Speaker 2: better driving the ball, he's gotten more efficient shooting the ball.
- 1:12Speaker 2: He's you know, he's a better defensive player, he's you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: he's better in every way. I think he's always playing, like,
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know, at an All American level.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yep, Dan Hurley with us the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
- 1:25Speaker 1: Solo Ball had a couple of big days in a
- 1:28Speaker 1: row here. He had a little injury, couldn't play in
- 1:31Speaker 1: one of the games to Paul, But in his last seven, coach,
- 1:36Speaker 1: he's sixteen to forty nine from three, so he's almost
- 1:39Speaker 1: up to thirty three percent in that area in those games.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Are you seeing him getting in the groove that he
- 1:46Speaker 1: was in last year in terms of his distant shooting.
- 1:48Speaker 1: He seems more comfortable here in the last few games.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I think, you know, as as as Bradlin, well,
- 1:56Speaker 2: first of all, he's too good of a shooter to
- 1:58Speaker 2: kind of be where where he was. Those numbers are
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, obviously going to come up and hopefully they
- 2:04Speaker 2: continue to come up. But I just think with Braylan
- 2:06Speaker 2: with with with Mulley or Munson or bray or whatever
- 2:11Speaker 2: we're calling him these days. As he as he gets
- 2:14Speaker 2: more comfortable offensively and becomes more of an impact player,
- 2:18Speaker 2: just the better that's going to be for Solo and
- 2:22Speaker 2: Alex and Tarris and Silas and and really the whole team.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Just getting better opportunities, you know, allows you to be
- 2:29Speaker 2: more efficient. He's going to get a better quality of shot.
- 2:33Speaker 2: As Braylan becomes more of a threat like he was
- 2:36Speaker 2: the other day, you know, maybe sometimes Solo is going
- 2:39Speaker 2: to get the weaker defender on the perimeter to guard
- 2:42Speaker 2: him as opposed to always getting the defensive stopper. So
- 2:48Speaker 2: I think for Solo just becoming a better defensive player.
- 2:52Speaker 2: We know the shooting is going to come around, but
- 2:54Speaker 2: I think he's showing signs of better defense, better finishing
- 2:57Speaker 2: at the rim, and those things there just as important
- 2:59Speaker 2: as whether he makes the threes or not.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Braylan Mullins at Xavier six of eleven, five of
- 3:05Speaker 1: ten from three. He is one of those guys every
- 3:08Speaker 1: time he shoots it, you feel like it's going in
- 3:11Speaker 1: every single time. I mean, have you seen a guy
- 3:13Speaker 1: like that in your time coaching?
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I have your comparison. Yeah, I mean, well, well,
- 3:22Speaker 2: Cam Spencer, you know, he was a good shooter. Yeah,
- 3:25Speaker 2: still is, and Jordan Hawkins and then you know, just
- 3:29Speaker 2: those two guys here at Yukon, I feel like, uh, now,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you know, he's he's different. He's got aspects of both
- 3:36Speaker 2: of them, you know, like the potentially the efficiency and
- 3:40Speaker 2: accuracy of Cam with the movement shooting of Jordan, the
- 3:45Speaker 2: ability to do at full speed and from deep range.
- 3:50Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean Brayllen, Uh, you know that's a
- 3:53Speaker 2: great development when you start to see him start to understand,
- 3:56Speaker 2: you know, how to use screens in our offense. Uh,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and just his ability to go off script and uh
- 4:03Speaker 2: and just take take shots in the flow of just
- 4:05Speaker 2: basketball happening. Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 1: He made that baseline jumper there of the shot clock
- 4:09Speaker 1: running down the other day at Xavier. That was that
- 4:12Speaker 1: was outstanding. Seventeen points also at six rebounds. This guy's
- 4:16Speaker 1: tougher than we all think. I don't know for assists.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He's a good passer. You made the point, he's a ballplayer.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Let's watch this guy play. It's going to be fun
- 4:26Speaker 1: to see the next two months with him.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he's got some physical strength, he's he
- 4:30Speaker 2: doesn't he's got to get better defensively, all young players do.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But he's not a liability for us on defense. He's
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, he's learning, he cares, you know, he's probably
- 4:41Speaker 2: physically stronger than you think, you know, and he's a
- 4:45Speaker 2: great team guy. You know, he just you know, he's
- 4:48Speaker 2: there's no ego. You know, he's a guy. Obviously it's
- 4:51Speaker 2: showing up and you know potentially is a one and
- 4:54Speaker 2: done lottery pick, but you wouldn't know it by what,
- 4:58Speaker 2: by how he responds to coaching, or his willingness to
- 5:02Speaker 2: just play hard, whether he's getting shots or not.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, when you first met him Braylan Mullens and his family,
- 5:10Speaker 1: what was your first take? Because you just don't know sometimes,
- 5:13Speaker 1: but you get a chance to really talk to somebody,
- 5:16Speaker 1: sit down with him. He is like the perfect guy
- 5:19Speaker 1: to be in this program in my mind, because he
- 5:21Speaker 1: does all those things you were just talking about.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, Quiet, you know, I probably first he say, man,
- 5:26Speaker 2: this guy's cool, little quiet. Does he like us? You know,
- 5:29Speaker 2: does he have it? Is he enjoying the visit? But
- 5:32Speaker 2: then you just you love the family, I mean just
- 5:34Speaker 2: you look you spend time with the family and you
- 5:36Speaker 2: just say, these are our type of people. I mean
- 5:38Speaker 2: they fit right in with the with the with the
- 5:41Speaker 2: Bill Klingen and the Spencer family and Craig and Jasmine Hawkins.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I mean they just they fit right in with what
- 5:48Speaker 2: you know, with with with the makeup, the castles. I mean,
- 5:51Speaker 2: it's just all about us winning and just trusting us
- 5:54Speaker 2: coaches to get the most out of their kid. And
- 5:57Speaker 2: that's the that's their mindset. And then that's why you
- 6:00Speaker 2: knew it was potentially going to be a match when
- 6:03Speaker 2: we got into the process. But yeah, he uh, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 2: for a kid that uh you know again is going
- 6:09Speaker 2: to have a chance to to you know, to potentially
- 6:11Speaker 2: be a one and done lottery level player, you never
- 6:14Speaker 2: know that, uh from the way he responds to uh,
- 6:17Speaker 2: to his teammates, to his coaches. Uh, practice is hard.
- 6:21Speaker 2: He's not a complicated kid. He's not on social media.
- 6:25Speaker 2: You know, he's just a ballplayer and a competitor.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Pretty darn good too, Dan Hurley with us, if we
- 6:30Speaker 1: take a quick break, we're going to look ahead a
- 6:32Speaker 1: little bit at Marquette. Also want to talk about the
- 6:34Speaker 1: dual center thing that Yukon's had going for four years now.
- 6:38Speaker 1: It's amazing back to back to back years where they've
- 6:41Speaker 1: been able to put two centers together productively. You're listening
- 6:44Speaker 1: to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on lear Field
