- 5:21I know you don't have to thank me, but here we go.
- 5:23Check this out. The interval of the week is
- 5:27brought to you by Jersey Mike's, a sub above.
- 5:32Jeffrey, welcome. Jose in the house.
- 5:35Come on now. Come on, come on.
- 5:38You know, you got too high energy, guys.
- 5:41I don't know. I don't know if the audience is
- 5:43even ready. I mean, we're out here 2
- 5:44minutes. Come on now.
- 5:47My brother, welcome, man, welcome.
- 5:49Welcome to the podcast. We are so honored to have you,
- 5:52man. This is really stupendous,
- 5:54Gracia, you know, for being here, man.
- 5:57So I, I, I want to, I want to start off before the titles and
- 6:01everything. Who is who you are before this,
- 6:04where you from, how you got raised?
- 6:06We want to know everything about you and my brother.
- 6:08Well, let me say this man, first and foremost, thank you.
- 6:12Thank you to the podcast for allowing me the opportunity to
- 6:16spend a little time with you and for what you do for not just
- 6:21your military brothers and sisters, but for really even a
- 6:24larger community, how you put yourself out there to to learn,
- 6:28to give, to motivate, to push, to encourage.
- 6:32So before we talk about me, man, I got to just say upfront, just
- 6:36a shout out to you Jose, and the great work you're doing on your
- 6:39on your podcast, brother. Gracia Gracia Sir takes a team
- 6:42in the village. The, the two man, I mean the two
- 6:46man version really about me. I am, I'm Puerto Rican.
- 6:52I was born in New Jersey. So that makes me nor Rican, I
- 6:55guess, right? Is that how that glory goes?
- 6:58And then when I was about 6 years old or so, I moved out to
- 7:03California and my mom and my brother and I, I lived with my,
- 7:08my cousin Ben, my Uncle Ben, his family out there.
- 7:11We, and so I, I grew up in Daly City, CA and then my mom wanted
- 7:15to move back to the East Coast where her parents were living as
- 7:18well. Everybody was from the New York,
- 7:20New Jersey area. Everybody had done the, the
- 7:22traditional coming from Puerto Rico, doing the, the factory
- 7:26work and everything else in New York.
- 7:27And then we had spread out to Maryland.
- 7:29And so the idea was for us to move from California to
- 7:32Maryland. And so I, I moved from Maryland
- 7:35when I was in my teens and then grew up really in the, in the,
- 7:39in the DMV, man. I grew up in Takoma Park, MD,
- 7:42Silver Spring, MD and I went to University of Maryland.
- 7:46Shout out, are there any terps in the house?
- 7:48If there's any terps, go ahead and speak out as well.
- 7:52So I spent a lot of time on the on the East Coast and, and
- 7:56growing up for me was, you know, you and I have talked before and
- 8:01you don't know you're poor until you're out of the circumstances
- 8:05that tell you that. But my mom raised two boys by
- 8:09herself without any without any really help.
- 8:12She never made more than $11,000 in a year.
- 8:15She sent us both to private school for high school.
- 8:19So I don't even know how that math works, special math, but it
- 8:22worked. And and we had as a center of
- 8:26our lives one central thing man, and that is, you know, building
- 8:29a relationship with Christ. And I did not always walk at the
- 8:35right pace in cadence, but he never gave up on me.
- 8:38And, and fortunately I was able to, to, to grow up and then get
- 8:42into a whole career stuff. We'll talk about that later and
- 8:45some some good things along the way.
- 8:47No, that is stupendous. You're right about how we
- 8:49migrated with New York. You know, my dad came from PR
- 8:52and just Yeah, that that's an amazing for all of us.
- 8:56You know, we come with that first generation.
- 8:58But thank. Thank you for sharing that.
- 9:00But I want to I want to ask you something.
- 9:02I know. Como este este, one of the first
- 9:05major, he said pivots in your life came from an unimaginable
- 9:08personal tragedy. How did that moment change the
- 9:11direction in your life? Yes.
- 9:13So I was in the Washington DC area, you know, as I said
- 9:16growing up and I got involved in, you know, money in banking.
- 9:21I was working in that area and my grandparents who were in in
- 9:26in the Washington, DC area who were married for 65 years.
- 9:30So say, think about that for a second, 65 years.
- 9:34They owned a little tailor shop. They would walk holding hands,
- 9:37going to work together. My grandmother would say, you
- 9:40know, if that guy misbehaves, I'm not worried about it because
- 9:42I'll just put on another dress. I'll find another man.
- 9:44I'm not too worried about him. You know, old school style.
- 9:48Everybody in the neighborhood knew them.
- 9:50They'd wave at people when they would go by.
- 9:53And, and the biggest and, and really the, the 1st and the
- 9:56strongest pivot of my life came. And what happened is there was
- 10:01a, a, a fire that started in their home, started 2:12 AM And
- 10:07it was an electrical outlet that had malfunction and it sparked.
- 10:13And from it, they, they had a whole bunch of materials because
- 10:18they were, you know, again, they were, they, they were tailors.
- 10:21And so they had a whole bunch of clothing materials in the
- 10:23basement of their house. That outlet caught on to the
- 10:27materials in their house. And unfortunately, the house
- 10:30caught on fire. I was fortunate enough in the
- 10:34Washington, DC area to grow up with a bunch of really good
- 10:37friends who I've had for more than 40 years. 1 is a guy named
- 10:41Kevin Karine. Kevin, what had happened is I
- 10:46had gotten home. I'd been out that night, you
- 10:47know, as we live and I, I'd gotten home that night.
- 10:54I'd gotten and I was informed that my grandparents house was
- 10:58on. So I, I, I jumped in my car.
- 11:02I spit over there. When I pulled up to the house, I
- 11:05could see the orange and flame. I could see the house was in
- 11:11flames. I got out of the car.
- 11:14I tried to run in. Kevin tackled me and he laid on
- 11:18top of me and he said, hey man, you can't get in there.
- 11:22And I, I watched the firefighters go in.
- 11:27Kevin stayed with me and we found out later that my
- 11:31grandfather died in in bed. He was 92 at the time.
- 11:37My grandmother was 85 and and she was heard screaming for her
- 11:44life, the door she was found by the door of the house.
- 11:51And that night everything Jose. That night everything changed
- 11:56for me, man. My grandmother would always say,
- 12:01why are you doing the work you do?
- 12:02You should help people and and what happened is they died
- 12:07principally because there was a failure in the municipality they
- 12:11lived in. They lived in an under
- 12:13underserved, basically brown and black community where two
- 12:16different counties were deciding who should send their 911
- 12:20system. And they played ping pong and it
- 12:23took 22 minutes for the fire truck to get to their house.
- 12:27So, so you know, you sit there and you say, OK, you know, what
- 12:31am I going to do with my life now?
- 12:33Because you can't live life the way that you did.
- 12:35And so I decided that I wanted to get, I want to, I figured if
- 12:40you're going to make a change in something, you got to get into
- 12:42it itself. And so I decided that I would
- 12:47pivot from the work that I was doing and that I would work in
- 12:50government and specifically I'd work in government so that
- 12:54government could better serve the Latino community.
- 12:57And it could, it could provide a services not just to the Latino
- 13:03community, but it could provide services in a way that could,
- 13:05could change the world. And so, you know, the reward for
- 13:08good work is more work. And so I got hired for one job
- 13:10and then I ended up doing 2 jobs.
- 13:13And then I started a whole career in the government that
- 13:16really that, that really it was nothing I ever could have
- 13:20imagined. And lots of, lots of which I'm
- 13:23grateful for. Wow, No, that's thank you for
- 13:26sharing that. You know, and, and before I get
- 13:29into the question about, you know, about the government and,
- 13:32and although we, we, we officially kick off Hispanic
- 13:35Heritage Month next Tuesday, I want to actually, you know, on
- 13:39that because you mentioned Hispanic about I think this
- 13:41year's month at Unidos Somos Mas together.
- 13:45We are more, you know, what's, what's your view being Latino?
- 13:48How important is that? You know that we celebrate.
- 13:51Well, ironically, you know, this week I went to the Hispanic
- 13:54Heritage Awards, which took place in Minneapolis, MN.
- 13:59And you know, if you know, it's called like the Latino prom,
- 14:02right? 4000 people get together and,
- 14:06and it was, it was a beautiful ceremony this time because when
- 14:11we talk about being united, being able to do more, they
- 14:15hosted it, not the Kennedy Center, which it's been there
- 14:17for 38 years, for year 39. They hosted it in Minnesota.
- 14:21You say why in Minnesota? Because it was in response to
- 14:25what had been taking place with the operation.
- 14:29It where I, you know, ice was in in Minnesota and they were they
- 14:33wanted to celebrate and recognize the people of
- 14:38Minnesota. So they have 6 awards and their
- 14:40last award is called the humanitarian award.
- 14:43They gave it to the people of Minnesota for how they responded
- 14:48to protecting, engaging, loving, guiding their brothers and
- 14:53sisters united. We can do more.
- 14:58And you know, my biggest belief is that, you know, you got to
- 15:03give before you get you got to offer before you ask.
- 15:06You got to put yourself out there.
- 15:08You got to give yourself and the communities you're a part of a
- 15:11chance to learn and grow. And, and, and I've, I've really
- 15:15been blessed to have a multi colored, multiracial just
- 15:21experience of life that has enriched every part of my life.
- 15:27So I'm a big believer that whether you were born in the
- 15:31states or you were born somewhere else, whether you're
- 15:33fluent in Spanish or you're not fluent in Spanish, whether or
- 15:37not, you know, you live in a multi generational household
- 15:40like I do. My mom's 94, she's upstairs.
- 15:43You know, my wife and three kids look, or you're somebody who's
- 15:47living a different life. At the end of the day, you walk
- 15:50in and you are welcomed because our community, the Latino
- 15:54community, we are going to welcome you.
- 15:57We are going to let you know that you belong.
- 15:59We're going to welcome you in four different ways, Right,
- 16:01right, right. First and foremost, you belong.
- 16:05You have identity in our community.
- 16:07You can learn, you can contribute, you can challenge.
- 16:11We believe in that is stronger when we do that.
- 16:15We just got to remind ourselves because sometimes the noise, we
- 16:18got to separate signal and noise.
- 16:20Sometimes the noise is loud, but you got to look at the signal
- 16:24and that goes to your gifts and your opportunities.
- 16:26Yeah. No.
- 16:27And, and I can relate to, you know, growing up in New York, I
- 16:30didn't even know I was Latino, to be honest.
- 16:32My parents came and you know, I missed it when I left New York
- 16:37and I found my roots, you know, with other Latino.
- 16:39It was an amazing transformation.
- 16:41So I can definitely relate to that, you know, but thank you
- 16:45for sharing that. And and I want to talk about the
- 16:48next pitiful pit you made. There was a huge pivot when you
- 16:52were leaving the the federal federal service and opportunity
- 16:56and moving to Denver without an established network.
- 16:59What made you willing to make that move?
- 17:02Why did you make it? Yeah, You know, pivots in life
- 17:06happen. And so my wife wanted to move
- 17:10out West. And, you know, when your wife
- 17:13wants to do something, she smiles a certain way.
- 17:14You know, it's already done. She's just informing you that
- 17:17you get to go along for the ride.
- 17:19But she says, yeah, so so we said, you know, let's look at
- 17:22Phoenix, Let's look at look at Dallas, Denver, a couple of
- 17:25other places. But the deal was she would take
- 17:29her federal job with her when she left.
- 17:31And that I, I would go ahead and I would start this consulting
- 17:35career. So, you know, I, I had this
- 17:37career in government where I was in charge of learning for the
- 17:40nation's nuclear weapons program.
- 17:42There was no kaboom there. So then I moved on.
- 17:44I was in charge of learning for a part of the government that
- 17:47overseas the futures, options swaps, cryptocurrency and
- 17:53predictive marketplace worth $600 trillion.
- 17:57Man, it's crazy. So I had AI had a responsibility
- 18:00of overseeing learning for that. And during that whole time I, I
- 18:05did a ton of interagency work and I was focused on workforce
- 18:09development activities, specifically on generations, how
- 18:13we communicate again, grossed across generations, how we
- 18:16engage, how we grow leaders across generations, etcetera.
- 18:20And so I was doing probably 25 gigs in the government every
- 18:26year essentially for free for more than 10 years.
- 18:30And I was developing an expertise.
- 18:31And so we came to an Apex where my wife said she wanted to move.
- 18:35And there was an opportunity then for me to start my own
- 18:38company. And so we made a pact to say,
- 18:41OK, let's move out West. Let's go ahead and make this
- 18:43pivot. And let me tell you, Jose, you
- 18:45know, I had what a lot of people say is sort of a a golden
- 18:48opportunity. I really did.
- 18:49I had great people. I was making a fantastic salary.
- 18:53I was a senior leader in government.
- 18:55I was doing what I wanted to do. People say, I have lots of
- 18:59people who said, why in the world would you do that?
- 19:03And then I had some other people who said, OK, if you want to do
- 19:05that, you better know what you're doing.
- 19:07I'm going to test you. So one friend of mine, Mark,
- 19:10Mark Collins, came over my house, gave me a four hour
- 19:12drill. Wow.
- 19:19I want to know all about what you're going to do.
- 19:21Tell me about it. And he drilled me, you know, but
- 19:24you need people in that life. And I made a pivot, my brother.
- 19:27I jumped off the ledge with having no clients, no for sure
- 19:34income, three young kids. Wow.
- 19:38But I got to tell you something man, the greatest parachute that
- 19:42you ever have is the one that God gives you, cuz when you jump
- 19:46and you know he has you, you will land as you know, spending
- 19:5130 years in the army. Yes, Sir.
- 19:53You know, the if the equipment is right and you trust the
- 19:58equipment, yes, when you take the jump, you're going to land.
- 20:02Yes, yes. Now most people don't take that
- 20:07jump. And what made it different for
- 20:10me was, look, he had taken me through so much in my life.
- 20:16I just believe he would never give up on me.
- 20:19And so I, I took this jump, Jose.
- 20:21I said maybe I, I had maybe 6 or 7 workshops.
- 20:26I didn't know that today we would have 60 workshops, 60, but
- 20:32in 13 different industries. So little math 60 * 13 that we'd
- 20:38be doing stuff with 80 organizations, large ones.
- 20:42Unbelievable. That is stupendous, man.
- 20:44Hey, we got a shout out real quick from Albert Vargas, he
- 20:49says. Proud of you brother.
- 20:50Keep it up. Come on now, come on that that
- 20:54that and that is my brother Albert, who literally isn't is
- 20:59in Florida himself, who is a an an an IT expert has been through
- 21:05a lot as well. And let me say this family is
- 21:10twofold. It's blood and the people who
- 21:13choose to spend time with you and you choose to spend time
- 21:15with as well. And like I said, Albert's
- 21:18wonderful guy, my brother Ken, fantastic.
- 21:20He lives close to me here in Colorado.
- 21:22And I got a ton, a ton of guys that I grew up with in the
- 21:25Washington, DC area who are who are, who are my Blood Brothers.
- 21:29I would do anything for them and they really teach me a lot about
- 21:34life. And it's, it's, it's those kinds
- 21:36of relationships that allow you to that allow you to jump.
- 21:39And so when I had some self doubt, I call one of those guys
- 21:42and they remind you of who you have been so you can become who
- 21:47you're supposed to be. We all need that network, Jose.
- 21:50We all need the opportunity to knock on doors of places we have
- 21:55been so people open and they remind us of what we can do, not
- 22:00what we're not. Maybe the current moment that
- 22:02we're in because my brother that at that time is going to pass.
- 22:05Yes, yes, absolutely. No, you are absolutely correct.
- 22:09You know, and you know, you talk about recognizing fear and doing
- 22:15it anyway, cuz that's, that's what I've been hearing.
- 22:17And then were you really, let's say, courageous during those
- 22:22major decision, or were you afraid it simply moved anyway?
- 22:27I was scared to death, man. Yeah, I was thinking to myself,
- 22:32I how am I going to support my family?
- 22:35I gave up the kind of job that people work their whole life
- 22:38for. If I lose, we all lose.
- 22:43And I also have an incredible, I mean, I have, I have an
- 22:47incredible daughter. She's 19 now.
- 22:49She is smart as a whip, intellectually curious, funny, a
- 22:55great person. She also has cerebral palsy.
- 22:59So I have 3 kids, one with special needs.
- 23:02Like the safety part of you says, don't, What are you doing?
- 23:06Right, right, right. But the other part of you says,
- 23:11what are you doing if you don't? You have to take those moments
- 23:16of pivot and actually take action.
- 23:19You have to move from where you are to where you got, and you
- 23:25cannot let fear guide you. You cannot.
- 23:28Fear can be a motivator. Let's not get crazy now.
- 23:31It can help motivate part of what your challenge is.
- 23:35Fear cannot guide. Fear can be part of the
- 23:37motivation, right? I don't know if you ever played
- 23:39sports. You know, if you played football
- 23:41and you getting chased, you're not trying to get hit by that
- 23:44big dude. You go run fast, right?
- 23:47But it can motivate you. But that's not your purpose.
- 23:50That's not why you're out there. So you got to be able to take
- 23:53what's in front of you, recreate opportunity and then move
- 23:58forward with your head up and with a a strong belief set that
- 24:03he is going to take you through this storm.
- 24:05And he's going to your vision of what's your, your, your, your
- 24:11ceiling is. He changes that and that becomes
- 24:14your floor. The things you thought that
- 24:16that'd be great if I could achieve it.
- 24:17He's like, OK, you're going to achieve that.
- 24:19And then but, but that's part of having that faith to go forward,
- 24:23not because of you, but because of what he wants to do through
- 24:26you. Absolutely.
- 24:27We got some more. You have a LinkedIn user that
- 24:30says find your Tribe. I think you were talking about
- 24:33the people that support you. Thank you.
- 24:35And we have also Mark Collins that speak that truth, brother.
- 24:40Who's Mark Collins? Who's Mark Collins?
- 24:42You know. Man, Mark Morrell Collins is
- 24:46probably the smartest person that I've ever met.
- 24:50He was a my roommate in college. Mark Collins is an executive
- 24:55with a very large medical system.
- 25:00He is a brilliant human being that cares deeply.
- 25:06The one thing that I'll tell you about Mark Collins and This is
- 25:09why this the person who said in LinkedIn, find your tribe, Mark
- 25:13is part of that tribe. Mark is a truth teller.
- 25:18If you're doing the right thing, he's like, brother, I got your
- 25:21back. If you're not doing the right
- 25:24thing, he's going to bring you to the side and let you know.
- 25:29Absolutely. He's more than just a friend.
- 25:32He's, he's a kind soul, a great man and a fantastic father.
- 25:38And he's the kind of person that should be celebrated, not just
- 25:42on this kind of podcast, This person in, in the LinkedIn who
- 25:45said you got to find your tribe. Let me just say another way to
- 25:48think about that is you want to find your own personal board of
- 25:51directors. That's three to five
- 25:53individuals, Jose, but they only have one thing in common.
- 25:56They know you and they care about you.
- 25:57And when you talk about making a life pivot, you bring it to the
- 26:02board. And that board, here's what
- 26:04happens. If anybody's had to, you know,
- 26:06live with the direction of a board.
- 26:08If they tell you yes and you were hoping they were saying no,
- 26:11you better get ready. You better go for it.
- 26:14And if they tell you the opposite, you got to follow it.
- 26:16But but having your tribe, nurturing your tribe, and loving
- 26:21your tribe is an opportunity and responsibility for all of us.
- 26:24Yeah, and just so you know, I got a text and Yvette said that
- 26:27was me who said about the tribe. What's up?
- 26:32We have another comment from Nicole Cameron.
- 26:35She says yes, your community and connection is so important and
- 26:40you are such an inspiration. Jeff, thanks for all you do.
- 26:44Grateful to call you a friend. Let me say this about Nicole.
- 26:49Nicole is also an executive. She has her own consulting
- 26:54company. We've collaborated and we're
- 26:56going to continue to collaborate.
- 26:57In fact, we're going to be hosting some podcast activities
- 27:01bringing synergy and opportunity and what she does and her
- 27:05uniqueness. And she's part of this.
- 27:07She's she's new to the tribe. She's in the tribe too.
- 27:11But part of this is that she has a vision for herself and others.
- 27:16Nicole is exceptionally present with people, which draws them
- 27:21in, and she's a fantastic listener.
- 27:23When you're present and you listen well, the Sky's the limit
- 27:26about what you can produce. Jose, you get me all worked up
- 27:30here. Now come.
- 27:30On what I need Hey, I need the raw data.
- 27:33I got one more this Lincoln user, which I'm I know who it
- 27:36is. It's it's evac and she says your
- 27:39daughter and family is amazing. Amazing brother.
- 27:43Yeah, it is amazing. So.
- 27:46You know, you know, that's amazing.
- 27:47And she is. She is a man.
- 27:49She is that, she's the WOMAN, the woman and charge large and
- 27:53charge, you know what I'm saying?
- 27:55So we're going to, we're going to go with a, you know, come on,
- 27:58say you say, you say we shouldn't seek validation and
- 28:01record all recognition, but we should embrace it when it comes.
- 28:05How do you appreciate recognition without becoming
- 28:09dependent on it? Beautiful question.
- 28:11You know, don't walk in a room and say, did I do a good job?
- 28:14Have I done a good job? Right?
- 28:16You don't do that. You got to walk in with
- 28:17something. One of my clients is West Point,
- 28:19the United States Military Academy, and one of the things
- 28:22they they teach and stress over there is confident humility.
- 28:26You might have the answer, but you don't always have to ask it.
- 28:29So the balance really comes in this whole ideology of
- 28:33curiosity, right? So how can you be curious in the
- 28:38moment? And the, the reality is you
- 28:41don't need to seek validation cuz that at the end of the day,
- 28:45if you're doing his work, you're already in the right spot.
- 28:48The second part is, you know, the idea of, of, of putting
- 28:53yourself in that situation is then you become so dependent on
- 28:56it. And then if you don't get it,
- 28:59you start to doubt yourself. So even when the wind blows in
- 29:03the direction you're not going, but you know you're going the
- 29:05right direction, right? Go ahead and put the hoodie up,
- 29:08you know, tighten it up, keep walking straight because you're
- 29:11going in the right place. And the validation and the
- 29:16opportunity and the success is going to come and it, it'll show
- 29:20up at the right time. But let me tell you what, the
- 29:23wilderness teaches you something.
- 29:25It teaches you something. Sometimes the best lesson for
- 29:30your growth is a moment of significant humility, right?
- 29:35And all of a sudden you say to yourself, I thought I could.
- 29:38And then you say, oh, man, that's the problem.
- 29:40I was thinking more about me and less about we.
- 29:44So I thought I could do XY or Z, but if I was doing it in my own
- 29:47strength, that's why we're not doing it the right way.
- 29:50It's got to be about what we can do together.
- 29:52But these moments where we Jose, we've got to spend time with
- 29:57ourselves, sometimes in silence, sometimes in where we just
- 30:02change the pace and cadence to ask ourselves 3 central
- 30:07questions. Man, who is it that you are
- 30:10today? Who is it that you want to
- 30:13become tomorrow? And watch this one.
- 30:16Get ready. What are you going to do about
- 30:18it? Amen.
- 30:21Yeah. Wow.
- 30:24The execution of it, sometimes it's hard for some people.
- 30:27I got you. Oh, wow.
- 30:28Yeah. Wow.
- 30:30OK, that's deep. Yeah, you.
- 30:33I told you my man, we, we're going to get deep today because
- 30:35at the end of the day, one of the things I do not apologize
- 30:38for is, is asking people to look inside of themselves And look, I
- 30:43want, I want you to love you. I want you to like you.
- 30:48I want you to care about you. I want you to motivate you.
- 30:52I want you to celebrate you. I want you to have that, and I
- 30:57want you to give yourself that gift because guess what?
- 31:00When you do that, and you're doing it and you can do it with
- 31:04strength and humility, you invite people in for them to
- 31:08celebrate themselves too. Absolutely.
- 31:10Yeah, Well, absolutely. I got a text from Yvette and she
- 31:16said, you know, why is your business about generations?
- 31:19And then after that, we're going to get into how people can
- 31:21contact you, your website, so. Sure, sure.
- 31:26I mean, we can I'd love to talk about my business and and you
- 31:28know, we can have a conversation about what we do.
- 31:32The name of it is called generationology, the seven
- 31:36syllables you got to practice saying it out loud a few times.
- 31:40And our focus really is helping organizations figure out how to
- 31:44manage and lead matter of. Fact.
- 31:46I'm gonna bring it up, then we're gonna bring it up.
- 31:48There we go. Let's let's let's go right into
- 31:51it. Let's get into it, my man.
- 31:52Let's get into it. Yeah.
- 31:54So, so we really believe that there's four ways that we can
- 31:58help organizations be successful.
- 32:01And and ultimately the 30,000 foot is that we believe this,
- 32:06that leadership. Leadership is a behavior,
- 32:11Leadership is a choice. And leadership is something that
- 32:15one can increase. We believe trust is a behavior,
- 32:20Trust is a choice, and trust can be something that can be
- 32:24increased so leaders can get better.
- 32:28They can trust better, they can engage better, they can
- 32:31communicate better because all of it is a behavior, all of it
- 32:35is a choice and all of it is something that we can improve.
- 32:39And we think I'll say there's really four ways that we go
- 32:42about doing it. Like I said earlier, we have 80
- 32:45plus clients, huge organizations like the United States
- 32:49Geological Survey, the FBI, MI TS Lincoln Lab.
- 32:56We, I just came back from doing some stuff with the Space Force
- 33:01in, in Florida. We're going to be doing stuff
- 33:04with White Sands Missile Range here later on this month.
- 33:08We've got local, local, local companies here as well.
- 33:12We are the training, leadership training entity for the 7th
- 33:16largest city and Colorado. I'll stop there.
- 33:20Look, the one thing that everyone of those clients have
- 33:23in common is that they want to improve and we want to help them
- 33:27do it. And so we, we really, we really
- 33:30see that opportunity in four ways how we develop leaders and
- 33:36we believe that developing leaders requires presence.
- 33:41So we have design, develop, deploy, interactive workshops
- 33:47that are two hours in length. They can be up to 4 hours in
- 33:50length or they can be as as much as a half a day.
- 33:54But we do workshops in 13 different industries.
- 33:59So our manufacturing workshops are customized to the
- 34:03manufacturing world. One of our clients is Boston
- 34:05Children's Hospital. So our workshops are focused on
- 34:09healthcare. And so they're nuanced so that
- 34:13they meet the industry where the industry is.
- 34:16We do tons of research to understand where their workforce
- 34:19is and where their workforce is going.
- 34:21And so we're able to offer from our studio here in Colorado and
- 34:25we're talking to you from or in person at their location
- 34:29workshops. And those are, and those are
- 34:31interactive workshops. You're not going to sit back and
- 34:33listen to Jeff, you're going to work.
- 34:35We use David Rock's theory of of engagement.
- 34:38So every 17 minutes there's some activity so that take place.
- 34:42So that that's that's one of our areas, Jose.
- 34:44And then another is elevating teams.
- 34:48So we bring leadership teams together and we have real
- 34:52conversations that helps them collaborate better.
- 34:56We focus on collaborative intelligence.
- 34:59So you might have a team of 10 or 12, but how are they working
- 35:02well together? How are they seeing each other?
- 35:05How are they showing up for each other?
- 35:06So we do that. We have another area where we
- 35:11call human experiences. My brother, I could talk on that
- 35:14for an hour. This is Caliente Senor Miracomo.
- 35:18It is hot stuff. This is where Nicole and I are
- 35:22doing our podcast where it's called the Soul of Work podcast.
- 35:28And so we talked to business owners and individuals working
- 35:32in companies to really dig deep. What's the soul tell you about
- 35:36the work you're in and the things that you want to do?
- 35:38We want to feature organizations and feature leaders from that
- 35:43perspective. We have a program too, with my
- 35:46daughter. 1 is called Love Letters from Poppy Jose.
- 35:52I wrote a book for my daughter before she went to college, 24
- 35:54chapters. And it's and it's the thoughts
- 35:57that most fathers want to say to their daughters, but they may
- 36:00not have the opportunity or time to do it.
- 36:03And and so she and I have the opportunity where we read
- 36:07chapters of that book together in an environment where fathers
- 36:10and daughters are together. And it's a reminder to a father
- 36:13that you can love your daughter out loud.
- 36:15Let me say that all again. You can love your daughter out
- 36:18loud and you give her space to grow.
- 36:20There's times she go like you, not like you.
- 36:23Sometimes you're on the list, sometimes you're off the list.
- 36:26But at the end of the day, she's a girl and you want to be able
- 36:29to have that opportunity. She's also, well, my daughter's
- 36:33name is Sochi. She's also an incredible
- 36:35speaker. She just did a, a gig herself
- 36:39and she, she talks on how to work with Gen.
- 36:43ZS who have disabilities. So she helps businesses,
- 36:47government agencies, state and local governments as well.
- 36:54Things that I need to be aware, things that I need to do to best
- 36:57engage, to really engage this workforce that has a lot to
- 37:01offer. Again, she is cognitively off
- 37:04the charts, but she might take a little more time in doing
- 37:08things. And the last part of the human
- 37:09experience, Jose, which I'm totally in love with my man.
- 37:13We talk more about this later, but I'm doing this with my buddy
- 37:15Dave Griffiths, who you're going to have on I think in December.
- 37:18It's called the Say It Experience.
- 37:20Say it experience. Where we help people learn how
- 37:23to express themselves through the writing of music and the Say
- 37:28it experience is is a 2 hour workshop where we use the gifts
- 37:34of storytelling and music to come together and AI tools to
- 37:38write music. March the 8th Jose March 8th I
- 37:43started writing my first song. March.
- 37:47Eighth, Wow. I've written 94 songs as of
- 37:50today and anybody can go into any platform they want to just
- 37:55type in Jeff Vargas Music. 8 songs are out and every Friday
- 38:01from now until the end of the year there'll be another song
- 38:03that comes out. This is Hispanic Heritage Month.
- 38:06That's right. So y'all listen up.
- 38:08You got to go to Jeff Vargas Music on your favorite platform
- 38:12and download Latina Queen. That's the English version.
- 38:17And then that's like a that's like a outdoor like or, you
- 38:20know, little concert action. And then you got to download the
- 38:23Spanish version, Reyna Latina, which is that slow groove.
- 38:28You know what I'm talking about, Jose.
- 38:29You remember those days, You know, Sir, I see it on you.
- 38:33It's one of those songs. Marcos knows those songs, right?
- 38:35It's a slow. It's a slow groove.
- 38:37You know what you got to do during that song?
- 38:39Oh. Yeah, absolutely.
- 38:41But you're celebrating Latinas, which is something that is on my
- 38:45heart we should do for Hispanic Heritage Month.
- 38:48So if there are any Latinas that are listening right now or
- 38:52Latinas by birth or Latina, because we just brought you in
- 38:55the community, let me tell you this, Jose and I right now, we
- 38:58just want to take a moment and celebrate, yes, for your
- 39:02resilience, your strength, for the way that you love and the
- 39:06way that you show up for your families.
- 39:08It's next level. So these songs are are set up to
- 39:12celebrate that. Jose, you got me.
- 39:14I mean, I'm drinking water now, man.
- 39:15Let me just be quiet. I mean, it's just you got me
- 39:17rolling, Sir, rolling. Hey.
- 39:19Hey, the world is your oyster, my brother.
- 39:21It's all you, man. This is what it's all about,
- 39:24man. Hey, yeah, I'll go to let me see
- 39:29the next slide talks about this this.
- 39:33Yeah, this is our retreats. And so for this listen, we,
- 39:38we've been, we've been blessed. I mean, we had the entire, it's
- 39:44called Boston Children's Hospital, their cardiac division
- 39:49and their radiologists and anesthesiologist.
- 39:55We've, we've spent time with them where they have taken time
- 39:58off. Listen, these folks are world
- 40:00renowned. Sometimes it takes two or three
- 40:02years to literally get an appointment with them.
- 40:05And we've spent dedicated time helping them figure out how they
- 40:09can work better with themselves and provide even better patient
- 40:14care. We've been humbled by that
- 40:15opportunity. We've worked with the entire
- 40:17leadership team of the National Credit Union Administration to
- 40:20figure out on how they can't promote collaboration and
- 40:24civility in their own organization.
- 40:26We've done tons of work with folks like the United States
- 40:28Geological Survey, and we are a big believer that if you want
- 40:33people to focus on getting better as a unit, let's find a
- 40:37place to go to. Let's create some interactivity
- 40:41and watch this. Let's not just have fun with
- 40:44this, but let's leave making commitments to two places,
- 40:47ourselves and the organization, and let's see what we can grow
- 40:51and let's track it. And as I say, we bet you a shiny
- 40:54nickel that the data is going to prove that when we do that,
- 40:57everything changes. And so, you know, we believe
- 41:03that this kind of environment, it gives us a chance to have
- 41:07organizations put, give their leaders a chance to get together
- 41:12and then they can learn and grow.
- 41:14Our, our new website just came out last Monday.
- 41:17So it's cinematic. Every single modal, which is a
- 41:22call to action like that big green button is customized to
- 41:26whatever it is you asked for. We have a team.
- 41:30We get back to you within about 24 hours and we want to make
- 41:34sure that the engagement that we are offering meets your specific
- 41:39We are a boutique leadership and performance company.
- 41:45We understand that your needs may be different than someone
- 41:48else's needs and we want to make sure that we are focused on
- 41:51meeting those. Oh, wow.
- 41:53OK, Yeah. So that just tells you more
- 41:56about our facilitation and the kinds of things that we do.
- 41:59Yeah, lots of good stuff. And these are these are it, man.
- 42:03These are my 4 now. This is the human experience,
- 42:06Jose, right? Yeah.
- 42:08So generationology, media, we do we if somebody wants to write
- 42:13about a workplace subject that they that's on their heart, they
- 42:19can send me the article and I have a media company, we can
- 42:21publish it in media Medium. Excuse me.
- 42:25And that's where we have blogs about workplace activities that
- 42:30that we we launched the soul of work is the podcast I'm doing
- 42:35with Miss Kim. So that's our dance.
- 42:37Nicole, shout out if you're still there.
- 42:38Yes, the Say It experience is so look, I, I'm not, I mean I play
- 42:44trumpet, but I wouldn't say I have a music musical back
- 42:48writing. I wasn't a writer, but I'm a
- 42:51storyteller and using AI tools and the power of storytelling,
- 42:56Jose, anybody can write a song. Anybody can tell that story in
- 43:03music. And we're Dave and I really
- 43:06focused. It's for everyone.
- 43:07There's a particular niche for men who have trouble expressing
- 43:11themselves. Let me tell you what, you go
- 43:13spend 2 hours with us and you're going to come out with a song, 2
- 43:17versions of that song, and then a way to send that song to
- 43:21somebody that you love, man. Wow.
- 43:22No, that is that is unbelievable.
- 43:24Oh my goodness. Wow.
- 43:26And I know you talked about the love letters from Boppy.
- 43:29Come on man. I.
- 43:31Know, man, that's the out of all of them, that's the deepest one,
- 43:35yeah, from this perspective. Because in our world we're
- 43:40rushing, man, yeah. Beating each other.
- 43:43Yeah. And I really don't want another
- 43:46father to miss a moment with his daughter.
- 43:49I want I want him to feel comfortable expressing how he
- 43:54cares about her and that he wants to be there for her.
- 43:57And these, these love letters are serious, man.
- 44:01Just, you know, I'll give you an example, a love letter that
- 44:07says, Hey, I want you to love and I want you to learn how to
- 44:10protect your heart, right? So to help her understand that
- 44:15it isn't an instruction guide because the time you get that,
- 44:19but my daughter has a lot of thoughts on this.
- 44:21And she says, you know what, dad, I want us to work with a
- 44:25company so that we could put a special pocket in a coat where
- 44:29she knows she's got a, she's got a love letter from dad.
- 44:32So when she's being bullied, she can pull out that love letter
- 44:35and read it in real time at school.
- 44:38So there's a whole whole bunch of stuff that's coming with
- 44:40this, but it's a moment, man. It's a moment.
- 44:44Because for us and my company, man, we believe that AI is
- 44:49wonderful. And I do a lot of AI and I'm
- 44:51going to talk about that in a minute.
- 44:52But I don't want us to lose the human aspect of who we are.
- 44:57We can help people grow and organizations grow, and we can
- 45:00do that without losing our humanity.
- 45:03We got to love out loud, man. We got to care for real.
- 45:07We got to give people a chance to grow and and so that and that
- 45:10that's really the purpose of what we do.
- 45:13We've been blessed with clients and we'll work with more.
- 45:14We're always, always, always, always open to work with even
- 45:17more. Absolutely, But but that's kind
- 45:20of our mission and what we're what we're, what we're looking
- 45:22towards. All right.
- 45:26And then you did it, man, you just let the match for AI.
- 45:28So look, look, we also because we have been working a lot in
- 45:33the AI area and Nicole has her own company that does great work
- 45:36with AI and generations AI as we all know.
- 45:40And I don't want to, we won't belabor this.
- 45:43Either you're in it or you need to be in it.
- 45:45There's, there's only two camps, right?
- 45:48And so we have two products, 2 focuses for AI1 is for
- 45:54individuals, particularly those who are 40 and over that know
- 45:58they have to be effective in the job market.
- 46:00And so how do we utilize AI for that?
- 46:05A good friend who has blown this up, I started helping him and
- 46:09now he's helping me. Christopher Hoppy, he's gotten
- 46:1117 certifications in AI since October of last year.
- 46:17I can tell you this that you have to understand how to build,
- 46:23design, deploy your resume using AI tools.
- 46:27You have to, because on the other side of the fence, there
- 46:31are lots of evaluation tools that are looking through and if
- 46:37you don't have the right kind of pace and cadence and language,
- 46:40you having the opportunity to get a job is going to be
- 46:44significantly compromised. So that's one side of the fence.
- 46:48The other side of the fence is we work with organizations who
- 46:51want to look beyond. They want to use AI and still
- 46:54stay human. So how do you do that?
- 46:57So you can have a strategy on how you want to sift for your
- 47:01job, so to speak, but what about that person who doesn't meet all
- 47:05that criteria, but they are the diamond in the rough?
- 47:10How do you identify, analyze and engage them?
- 47:12So AI is the 4th part of our program and our activity.
- 47:17And we're doing AI work over at White Sands and other places,
- 47:21helping people. The other part to that is we
- 47:23help people understand how to present AI information to senior
- 47:28leaders for action. Because at the end of the day,
- 47:31you can be a great leader, but if you're a great leader that
- 47:35doesn't know how to present, you still got more to go in terms of
- 47:38your ceiling. So presentation skills, your
- 47:41presence, you know, you got to give yourself the present of
- 47:45presence as you grow as a leader.
- 47:48And so we talk about that as well.
- 47:50Yeah. But that's the kind of stuff
- 47:51that we're involved in in my company, Sir.
- 47:53Yes. It's stupid, ladies and
- 47:55gentlemen. There is the website as it
- 47:57scrolls on the bottom. I went through the website.
- 47:59It is clear, concise, to the point, user friendly and I'm
- 48:03from New York and I got issues and I was able to understand it
- 48:07made sense to me. So please check it out.
- 48:09And that's one way. And also we got people how they
- 48:12can get a hold of you on LinkedIn too.
- 48:14Yes, Sir, they, they can, We have a contact page on my
- 48:16website and they can get a hold of me on LinkedIn.
- 48:20You know, it's Jeffrey Vargas. And then LD is learning and
- 48:23development, so you can get to me from that perspective.
- 48:27I'd love to answer any questions that you have and spend a little
- 48:31time with you just being present.
- 48:32Look, this leadership dance for all of us is a journey.
- 48:37All of us continue to grow. And when we make a choice,
- 48:40because leadership is a choice for us to show up better and
- 48:44show up differently, man, the world changes not just for us,
- 48:48but it changes for the people that we have the privilege and
- 48:51the honor to engage. Oh my God, Lee.
- 48:54And we had a couple of comments and this is from Chairman
- 48:56Johnson Burgo. Jeff, I am in agreement with
- 48:59everyone else. You are true inspiration.
- 49:01Thank you for always giving back and pouring into others.
- 49:06Give big hug to Charmaine. She and I did a lot of projects
- 49:08together when I was in government and she's a fantastic
- 49:11soul and she's back in government and she's killing it
- 49:15once again. Here's another one and this is
- 49:17from Christopher Hop, Hop Hopi. And he said, Jeffrey, knowing
- 49:21you for 30 plus years, you have been one of the greatest powers
- 49:25and my closest brother I have ever known.
- 49:27Thank you. Continue to share your wisdom.
- 49:31Let me tell you what y'all, you can get in touch with me and
- 49:34then get in touch with Christopher.
- 49:35He's an incredibly wise and caring person who is officially
- 49:41and it like there's some people call themselves an AI expert.
- 49:44I fool around with AI. I'm OK, I'm not an expert.
- 49:48Christopher has 17 certifications including them
- 49:51from a little place called Cambridge.
- 49:53So you know, if y'all need you need some some activity, Mr.
- 49:56Hoppy got you. Oh my goodness.
- 49:58And we have another one from Joe.
- 50:01I ain't even going to try. Yes.
- 50:04OK proud of you my brother. Amazing testimony and an even
- 50:07greater impact than others. You've never forgotten where you
- 50:10came from, and God continues to use your journey to inspire so
- 50:14many. Joe is an unbelievable national
- 50:20leader. He's in charge of Emergency
- 50:22Management for one of the biggest cities in our country.
- 50:25And that dude, I got emotional thing about Joe.
- 50:30Joe. Joe shows up for everyone in his
- 50:34life and for people all over the country.
- 50:39Joe is when you talk about givers.
- 50:43Yeah, that brother gives his, that brother gives everything
- 50:46that he has and more. And he's married to a great
- 50:48woman, which is my sister's. So OK, let's go.
- 50:50Let's do that. One that is cool, yeah.
- 50:52And then of course, the goal said the Soul of Work podcast is
- 50:55going to be incredible. And of course I'm still here.
- 50:57I. Know she got stuff she got to do
- 51:01too so I. Know, I know, get in mind, I
- 51:04know probably that it's the book out this is from most likely
- 51:07it's from evac, right? No, Sochi and I read excerpts of
- 51:12it, but but we haven't published it itself.
- 51:15We working on several finalized pictures and we're changing the
- 51:18forward because when we put it out it was on her way to college
- 51:22and now she completed that year. So we wanted to update it when
- 51:26it goes forward. And, you know, and, and, and
- 51:29there's, there's my man Mark Collins, who again, if people
- 51:32want to talk to a leader who has overcome struggles that most of
- 51:35us could never understand, I'm happy to put you in touch with
- 51:38Mark and he can tell you a little of his testimony.
- 51:41Good people man, Good stuff for sure.
- 51:43Yeah, Mark said. Love your use of AI to promote
- 51:45human connections. Help.
- 51:47We got one more from Nicole. Let me see where is right.
- 51:50Here he goes. It says life is too short to not
- 51:54live in your purpose and to your full alignment.
- 51:57Jeff, everything you do teaches this.
- 52:01And is I tribes are good, man. Tribes are good.
- 52:06And, and, and, and I'll tell you this, Jose, what you're doing is
- 52:11impactful. It's necessary.
- 52:15And you are my brother. By hosting this kind of
- 52:19platform, you are giving change makers an opportunity to have a
- 52:26chance to connect with audiences that they may or may not be
- 52:30familiar with, man. And that that's that's deep work
- 52:32you're doing, Sir. So I wanna thank you.
- 52:34No, and I could not do this by myself.
- 52:36To have to give kudos to Yvette Delgado.
- 52:38She is my anchor. She is, she is my superwoman and
- 52:43without her, I will not be where I'm at.
- 52:44And I give credit to her and to my faith and to God.
- 52:47So it's thank you for those. But I, you know, we all need our
- 52:50board of director. She is my board of director.
- 52:55And we got one last one, I guess I say I agree with you.
- 52:59I agree with you about Joe. So, yeah.
- 53:03And as we come down, Jeff, any last words, anything we didn't
- 53:07cover that you want to say to the audience, to the people?
- 53:11There's there's just two things that come to mind.
- 53:14One, don't be too afraid to try something you've never done
- 53:19before. I am.
- 53:22I'm 60 years old man. I started writing songs.
- 53:27I, I got this, this app that helps you.
- 53:30Do you know songs using AI? Because I want to do a project
- 53:33with my sons and they said, Nah, dad, we don't want to write with
- 53:36you. And I said, shoot, I already
- 53:37paid for this thing for the year, so let me go ahead and,
- 53:40and do it. And then my buddy Kevin and I
- 53:44were talking and he said, hey, man, you know, my anniversary is
- 53:47coming up and, and you know, and, and I've known his wife
- 53:49since they met and you know, the, I know their whole story.
- 53:52So I said, let me go ahead and fool around with that.
- 53:54And so I wrote a song called Valerie My Angel.
- 53:58And, and then I wrote a bunch of tribute songs, man.
- 54:02I wrote tribute songs to a lot of these guys that I've grown up
- 54:05with. I wrote one to all of them
- 54:07called They Were Loved. And I just jumped in it.
- 54:10And the next thing you know, it took on a life of its own, man.
- 54:14And now there's thousands of people that have listened to it
- 54:16on YouTube and 15 different countries.
- 54:19And I, I don't man, there's many days I'm like, I cannot even,
- 54:24but let me say this, you got to try something that you've never
- 54:27tried before. Jump in it and see where it
- 54:30leads. Today I walked up to five
- 54:33different people. I I flew in from Minneapolis.
- 54:36I got off at the airport in Denver.
- 54:37I walked up to these three ladies who weren't busy.
- 54:39I said, y'all aren't busy. I think you like music.
- 54:42I'm going to play something for you.
- 54:44There were three Latinas. I played Latina Queen.
- 54:46And this young lady started crying and she said, Sir, I'm
- 54:49getting married. I want to know if I could play
- 54:51that at my wedding. I said, you can I take the bus
- 54:55to my car. I get out there, there's a lady
- 54:58who's sitting there on the bench, and I said, you look like
- 55:00you're ready to go to see the Colorado Buffalo's place.
- 55:02She says I am. I said, I think you like music,
- 55:05too. I think I want to play something
- 55:06for you. I don't know why.
- 55:08There's a song called Temporary. I play it for her.
- 55:10She starts crying. She says, you have no idea what
- 55:12I'm going through. Look, here's the thing.
- 55:15If you were told me six months ago, I'd have done those things,
- 55:17Jose, I told you, you are crazy, as they used to say, right?
- 55:21But she's got to do things that you've never done before.
- 55:25The next thing is celebrate people along the way.
- 55:29It cost you nothing. Encourage people, cheer for
- 55:33them. My boy Glenn Charles, don't know
- 55:35if he's on the line. He just got a job recently, man,
- 55:37we had a little party for him. We we just cheered for him.
- 55:40Cheer for him. I got my boy Alonzo Starling.
- 55:43Well, I love to death. I don't know if he's on.
- 55:45I wrote a song for him, for his brother called Carlton.
- 55:48Change the room because his brother passed away a few years
- 55:51ago, changed the room and he should not be forgotten.
- 55:53Look, celebrate people, man. Love people out loud and let
- 55:58yourself discover a new sense of you when you try something new
- 56:02that you've never done. Oh my God, Yvette just shot me a
- 56:05question right there. Jeff, if you can sit with your
- 56:07younger self, what would you say about the twist turns and pivots
- 56:10that shaped you? I would say 2, I'd say I'd say
- 56:13two things. One, stick with them because you
- 56:16don't know the end result of that twist or pivot that you've
- 56:20had. And the second is it's not about
- 56:22you. You're going to learn something
- 56:24that you got to pass on to somebody else.
- 56:26So learn the lesson and share the lesson with somebody else.
- 56:28But thank you for that. And before I say my last word, I
- 56:31want to let the orders next next Saturday as we bring Hispanic
- 56:35heritage months, we're going to have the incredible Ines salvo.
- 56:38He's a Puerto Rican contact creator, entrepreneur, had the
- 56:41opportunity to talk to this young lady.
- 56:42Please. You don't want to miss peaks and
- 56:45valleys. It's an incredible stories about
- 56:47resilience. So I want make sure you tune in.
- 56:49So I want to make sure I I put that out there And, and Jeff
- 56:53Gracia, I want to say thank you for being on the podcast.
- 56:57You drop so many golden Nuggets and we'll be in touch.
- 57:00Hopefully one day I get to see you in person brother.
- 57:02Yes, Sir. Yes, Sir.
- 57:03That's happening. That's happening.
- 57:07And I want us to ladies and gentlemen, thank you for being
- 57:09hey, and if you're off YouTube, make sure you hit that like and
- 57:12subscribe. Let's keep it moving, support
- 57:14HBO help the brother out. That's what it it stands for me,
- 57:18but better I will. It was a pleasure my brother,
- 57:27having you here and when you do your book, let Yvette and I know
- 57:31so we can get you on and brother keep your blessings and doing
- 57:35what you do man, I pre gracia Gracia Puerto.
- 57:39Thank you, Sir. You have a great afternoon.
- 57:41Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for everybody.
