- 2:15Speaker 2: I thank you, but Jackson definitely thanks you because he
- 2:17Speaker 2: spends hundreds and hundreds of hours on it to get
- 2:21Speaker 2: it where it needs to be. We're excited about football season,
- 2:24Speaker 2: but we're talking a little baseball here. This is a
- 2:27Speaker 2: big baseball state. Skip Bertman coach at LSU. He won
- 2:30Speaker 2: five national titles and he's one of the most successful
- 2:35Speaker 2: coaches in North America in the history of sports. But
- 2:39Speaker 2: in collegiate athletics he's up there. I mean, if you
- 2:43Speaker 2: want to put him on the Mount Rushmore, you could,
- 2:45Speaker 2: regardless of sport. When you win five national titles in baseball,
- 2:51Speaker 2: you know, from nineteen ninety one to two thousand and
- 2:53Speaker 2: you go to eleven College World Series and then you
- 2:57Speaker 2: all the MLB players that that have gone through LSU
- 3:03Speaker 2: and what they did at alex Box and the impact
- 3:08Speaker 2: that he has had on college baseball. Skip Burtman passes
- 3:12Speaker 2: away over the weekend, and he invented modern college baseball
- 3:20Speaker 2: as entertainment. He understood the entertainment component, and he wasn't
- 3:25Speaker 2: as locked in and focused as he was on building
- 3:29Speaker 2: a championship program, which meant year in, year out, they
- 3:32Speaker 2: always had a chance, right Yeah, because once he got
- 3:36Speaker 2: there in eighty four and got it up and run
- 3:38Speaker 2: in just a few years later and again Ben McDonald
- 3:41Speaker 2: might be Anko among many others in the late eighties
- 3:43Speaker 2: really got it going. And then in the nineties they
- 3:46Speaker 2: completely dominated college baseball. Dominated. When they showed up, you
- 3:51Speaker 2: knew who the biggest, you know, the big dog was,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and it was the LSU Tigers. And it was at
- 3:59Speaker 2: a when we were also we were good in football,
- 4:07Speaker 2: but not necessarily dominating, Okay, like LSU was not. LSU
- 4:13Speaker 2: was a total roller coaster in the seventies, eighties and nineties.
- 4:17Speaker 2: In football, Bama you know, totally lost their way post
- 4:23Speaker 2: Paul bear Bryant nineteen eighty two. Then they get Jens
- 4:26Speaker 2: Stallings plugged in in the early nineties, and then of
- 4:30Speaker 2: course he wins it in ninety two, but then they
- 4:32Speaker 2: go off the grid for years, you know, a decade
- 4:37Speaker 2: plus before getting it right, well, fifteen plus years actually,
- 4:42Speaker 2: before Saban comes in. As far as basketball, we were,
- 4:48Speaker 2: you know, we had some rup and Kentucky were rolling
- 4:53Speaker 2: coming out of World War Two. But then you know,
- 4:56Speaker 2: joebe Hall couldn't keep that going, so in basketball we
- 5:00Speaker 2: would have little spurts. But then, of course, I've talked
- 5:02Speaker 2: about this. Patino and Nolan totally changed the game right
- 5:07Speaker 2: around the same time as Spurrier changed the game in football.
- 5:10Speaker 2: But Bertman had already changed the game and would win
- 5:14Speaker 2: more titles than any of them. Yeah, Nolan got one
- 5:17Speaker 2: and he was great. Yes, Ricky p at Kentucky. Patino
- 5:20Speaker 2: got one and he was great. And yes, Spurrier got
- 5:23Speaker 2: one and he was great. Right, I mean they are.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But Bertman won five national championships from ninety one to
- 5:31Speaker 2: two thousand, and he did it by being a ferocious
- 5:37Speaker 2: and relentless recruiter. But then the weight room and the again,
- 5:42Speaker 2: he believed in the visualization part and self actualization. I
- 5:47Speaker 2: mean he talked about it all the time. I mean,
- 5:49Speaker 2: Drew Brees has talked about it. Tom Brady has talked
- 5:51Speaker 2: about how you have to visualize it manifested to get there.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Skip Bertman did that with his players all the time.
- 5:58Speaker 2: We will we will start, but we will think about
- 6:01Speaker 2: what it's going to be like to dog pile in Omaha.
- 6:05Speaker 2: That is our goal. That is the only goal that
- 6:07Speaker 2: we have. It's not anything else. We're not gonna We're
- 6:11Speaker 2: not going to talk about a bunch of other nonsense.
- 6:13Speaker 2: We're here to win national championships. And he did, and
- 6:18Speaker 2: he laid such a foundation and built so much momentum.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Look where they are today, you know, twenty something years
- 6:26Speaker 2: later after he stepped down to be the athletic director
- 6:29Speaker 2: at LSU, LSU still wins big in baseball. Minary got one,
- 6:35Speaker 2: Jay Johnson got two? Right, Yeah, because of the blueprint
- 6:42Speaker 2: that was laid out before them. Is he the most
- 6:45Speaker 2: underrated great coach in all of college sports history. He
- 6:50Speaker 2: built alex Box into a circus in a good way. Fireworks, music, sellout.
- 6:56Speaker 2: You know, he would go through the he would walk
- 6:57Speaker 2: through the stands. You would be you could see him
- 7:01Speaker 2: underneath walking through before the game. For years, that's what
- 7:06Speaker 2: college baseball was. You may go get a coca cola
- 7:11Speaker 2: and some nachos in nineteen eighty six at an LSU
- 7:16Speaker 2: baseball game, and Bertman would be talking to who was
- 7:20Speaker 2: serving you that coke because they were friends and they
- 7:24Speaker 2: were in rotary together or whatever. Crazy. That's what SEC
- 7:28Speaker 2: sports was, long before all the money and all the
- 7:31Speaker 2: cameras and the lights and the action and the big stuff.
- 7:35Speaker 2: He connected with people. He went all around town and
- 7:38Speaker 2: all around the area to connect with people come see it.
- 7:43Speaker 2: He understood that it should be a circus. That's a
- 7:46Speaker 2: good thing, and that music and a circus and fireworks
- 7:52Speaker 2: of course, minor league baseball, right, I mean, this is
- 7:55Speaker 2: where he's pulling this stuff from. You all lived it
- 7:58Speaker 2: with the Jackson Mets starting in nineteen eighty eighty one
- 8:01Speaker 2: eighty two. I mean, come on, we didn't have a
- 8:03Speaker 2: lot of entertainment in the Sun Belt, or you could
- 8:06Speaker 2: argue much coast to coast. It was a big deal.
- 8:09Speaker 2: You go out to a college baseball game or a
- 8:10Speaker 2: minor league baseball game, you got fireworks, hot dog and
- 8:13Speaker 2: somebody's run around on some outfit on the field. Bertman
- 8:18Speaker 2: got it. It's entertainment. I need people to come here,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and maybe they don't just want to watch baseball for
- 8:24Speaker 2: nine innings. So let's do some other things. I'm a promoter,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm a coach. We need to do car washes, we
- 8:30Speaker 2: need to sell hot dogs, we need to sell blueberry muffins. Today.
- 8:35Speaker 2: These guys that walk in these facilities this morning couldn't
- 8:37Speaker 2: even fat. They won't even some of them won't even
- 8:40Speaker 2: go out and shake hands with the lumps. Right, Bertman,
- 8:44Speaker 2: there was never anybody that he didn't run into at
- 8:47Speaker 2: a local restaurant cafe. And of course he was a
- 8:50Speaker 2: big walker again, and you know the lakes down by
- 8:52Speaker 2: LSU that eventually grew in a ball of development. Wise, Hey,
- 8:56Speaker 2: I'm skip Bertman. I already know you go to death Valley.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I need you to come over here to alex Box
- 9:02Speaker 2: and check out what we're doing. He did more than
- 9:05Speaker 2: we can ever imagine. And then he built a dynasty,
- 9:10Speaker 2: the only SEC baseball dynasty outside of vand Or built
- 9:14Speaker 2: in Corbin. I think that's fair. Yeah, oh yeah, if
- 9:19Speaker 2: you consider them there, because bandy what one two played
- 9:24Speaker 2: for two more lost lost in Mississippi State and Florida
- 9:28Speaker 2: maybe someone else and went to a bunch. Yeah, this
- 9:31Speaker 2: day and age, I think it is Yeah. We're powered
- 9:35Speaker 2: by RPT and Rix Pro Truck spraying bedliners and lift
- 9:38Speaker 2: kits three locations in the Metro area, Rix Pro Truck
- 9:43Speaker 2: dot Com.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Lokor Waggle Off the Waggle Off the Waggle.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Hey Hey, out of bounds ESPN one oh five nine
- 10:38Speaker 2: the zone. We're live in the Bank Plus Studio. The
- 10:42Speaker 2: show is brought to you by Farm Bureau Insurance. Bundle
- 10:45Speaker 2: your auto and home and save with your local Farm
- 10:48Speaker 2: Bureau Insurance agent. We'll have Tom Logan Bill, National College
- 10:52Speaker 2: Football Analyst with ESPN at eight thirty and then Nathan
- 10:57Speaker 2: McCarty will dive in at nine thirty and the The
- 11:00Speaker 2: Elijah Craig barrel pick is now at Briarwood Wine and Spirits,
- 11:04Speaker 2: forty nine forty nine Old Campton Road. We picked it
- 11:08Speaker 2: out several months ago. It's not the one we did
- 11:10Speaker 2: a couple of weeks ago, all right, That one will
- 11:13Speaker 2: be here, hopefully maybe before Christmas. Before taste the Italian Kitchen.
- 11:16Speaker 2: It obviously takes a minute, but the Elijah Craig barrel
- 11:21Speaker 2: pick that we picked out months ago has hit the
- 11:24Speaker 2: shelves at Briarwood Wine and Spirits. It's delicious. Elijah Craig
- 11:30Speaker 2: barrel pick. You'll love it. We're gonna taste it in
- 11:32Speaker 2: the third hour. It's here right in time for football
- 11:35Speaker 2: season and so on. So we're excited about that. Logan
- 11:38Speaker 2: Bill in fifteen minutes and then nine thirty Nathan will
- 11:43Speaker 2: come in and we'll talk about the Elijah Craig barrel pick,
- 11:47Speaker 2: which we're really excited about. And that was the one
- 11:50Speaker 2: where we went last year and picked it out and
- 11:54Speaker 2: had a great time up in Louisville, Kentucky or Bargstown
- 11:58Speaker 2: as y'all know. Okay, Bo bound straight funk with you.
- 12:03Speaker 2: We're talking Skip Bertman kind of time him in with
- 12:07Speaker 2: Bear Bryant, Nick Saban Rup, Pat Summit, you know, Don Staley.
- 12:21Speaker 2: There's some others that I'm I mean, I gotta put
- 12:23Speaker 2: spur Even though Spurrier doesn't have the national championships, he
- 12:28Speaker 2: has six SEC championships. That was at a time when
- 12:31Speaker 2: they were really valued and coveted, you know, I mean,
- 12:36Speaker 2: there's still a big deal. But you'll know now we're
- 12:39Speaker 2: so can you make the playoffs? Can you get in
- 12:42Speaker 2: the playoffs? And it's just like the NFL. If you
- 12:44Speaker 2: can get in, you don't ever know right, you could
- 12:48Speaker 2: bottle it. You could. You may get the right matchup.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Maybe the team you're playing has one or two players
- 12:55Speaker 2: that are down and then all of a sudden you're
- 12:58Speaker 2: in another round or two. But when I think of
- 13:01Speaker 2: Skip Bertman winning five national titles at LSU, and I
- 13:06Speaker 2: think of Paul bear Bryant winning six at Alabama, and
- 13:10Speaker 2: what Saban did it both LSU and Bama, and what
- 13:13Speaker 2: Pat Summit did at Tennessee and Rupp did at Kentucky.
- 13:15Speaker 2: In the list, you know, there's others. Burtman was a
- 13:21Speaker 2: promoter and a hype man and a master motivator. His
- 13:27Speaker 2: players just absolutely one hundred percent burned the ships. Believed.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And y'all can think this is corny, but Vince Lombardi
- 13:35Speaker 2: did it, and many others, Okay, Barry Switz. I mean
- 13:41Speaker 2: they believed when they walked out on the field they
- 13:43Speaker 2: were going to beat or you know what, I saw
- 13:46Speaker 2: it in the nineteen eighties as a kid, as a
- 13:49Speaker 2: college student in the nineties and so on, and man,
- 13:54Speaker 2: the similarities between Bertman and Saban. I know Bertman had
- 14:00Speaker 2: a little more of an outgoing personality, promoter, hyper hype man,
- 14:05Speaker 2: but still when it came down to running a program
- 14:08Speaker 2: and motivating and locked in and a championship driven culture.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Bertman and Saban holy smokes, think about the way, Saban,
- 14:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry, LSU was not a national brand. They're now
- 14:23Speaker 2: a top five without a doubt in a small state.
- 14:26Speaker 2: They are an They are a top five national brand
- 14:31Speaker 2: in collegiate athletics to go with like Ohio State, right,
- 14:35Speaker 2: and big big universities that have been bigger longer right
- 14:41Speaker 2: in the Midwest and Northeast and have had more student enrollment,
- 14:45Speaker 2: which means you have more alums and so on. But
- 14:48Speaker 2: and can you imagine if Bertman now a little bit
- 14:51Speaker 2: different today? The league is brutal. I mean, hell, the
- 14:55Speaker 2: first twelve teams out of sixteen are loaded. Now A
- 14:59Speaker 2: lot of that is because to Bertman in Polk Okay, right,
- 15:02Speaker 2: and show on. But but skip understood, and let's drop
- 15:09Speaker 2: the one on counting fans. Bertman under he took minor
- 15:14Speaker 2: league baseball and said, I've got to inject this into
- 15:20Speaker 2: my and we will sell blueberry muffins, we will sell pizza,
- 15:25Speaker 2: we will do car washes, and we'll do them and
- 15:27Speaker 2: do them and do them because we are going to
- 15:28Speaker 2: raise money for this program, and we're gonna get people
- 15:30Speaker 2: in the stands. This is Burtman about talking about counting
- 15:35Speaker 2: fans early in his tenure in career. Down in lsu Baton.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Rooch, I counted the people, and there were three hundred
- 15:42Speaker 4: and sixty four. But they sat in a funny way
- 15:45Speaker 4: like this. They sat like this. Nobody said anything. If
- 15:51Speaker 4: you didn't talk, all you heard was birds on the pa,
- 15:57Speaker 4: all boring, don and dump, and you couldn't understand them.
- 16:02Speaker 4: And nobody cared. And I remember distinctly hearing the aluminum
- 16:07Speaker 4: bat hit the ball like you normally don't hear because
- 16:11Speaker 4: of the noise at Miami. It was so quiet.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Bertman immediately put a charge into the atmosphere surrounding baseball
- 16:21Speaker 5: at the box, Responding to Captain Dynamites Ad and the
- 16:25Speaker 5: Sporting News, Bertman made the call not to the bullpen,
- 16:29Speaker 5: but to curious fans who would respond to a world
- 16:32Speaker 5: series of promotions, among them Major League Baseball San Diego Chicken.
- 16:40Speaker 5: He recruited families for his fan base, utilizing summer camp
- 16:44Speaker 5: for kids as players, connecting with the community in a
- 16:48Speaker 5: way unfamiliar to his athletic directors. With backgrounds in football
- 16:52Speaker 5: and basketball.
- 16:53Speaker 4: They're not six foot ten, they don't bench press four
- 16:57Speaker 4: hundred pounds like many other student athletes. They're great students,
- 17:02Speaker 4: they're wonderful with people. They look like, you know, you're
- 17:07Speaker 4: next door neighbor. You know. Yet they play shortstop because
- 17:10Speaker 4: you don't have to be that big to play baseball.
- 17:12Speaker 4: And I said, everybody will come. It's a kids sport.
- 17:16Speaker 4: It doesn't cost much. And said in Mississippi State draws
- 17:20Speaker 4: four thousand a game three times, and at Miami we
- 17:24Speaker 4: drew four thousand, and Florida State does that. And the
- 17:29Speaker 4: ad would say, you don't understand Skip, You're just a coach.
- 17:33Speaker 4: I got to get that a lot. You know, you
- 17:35Speaker 4: don't understand Skip, you're just a coach. And I said, no, no, no,
- 17:40Speaker 4: you can do this. This is a money machine. They'd laugh, doesn't.
- 18:01Speaker 2: All right, So let's walk through some of this. He
- 18:06Speaker 2: was a promoter, but he understood connectivity. Did you hear
- 18:10Speaker 2: what he just said? Ads and other people football people
- 18:14Speaker 2: told us we couldn't do this. Now I'm going to
- 18:16Speaker 2: go out in the community and get people to come
- 18:18Speaker 2: to the game. And I'm going to do this. Y'all.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Remember the San Diego Chicken in nineteen eighty two, eighty forties,
- 18:23Speaker 2: like that was a big deal. When it would come
- 18:25Speaker 2: through Smith Wills, Bertman looked at it and said, oh no, no, no,
- 18:29Speaker 2: we'll we'll bring him in here. People said, you can't
- 18:31Speaker 2: do that. That's what people do, Well, that's not what
- 18:34Speaker 2: people did before here. He didn't give a dam. He
- 18:37Speaker 2: was the ultimate hype man and promoter for a circus
- 18:40Speaker 2: which he turned into LSU Baseball, which then turned into
- 18:45Speaker 2: an absolute and total dynasty. And in fact, skip Bertman
- 18:49Speaker 2: was the only dynasty between well outside of Pat Summit,
- 18:53Speaker 2: between coach Paul bear Bryant and Nick Saban at Alabama.
- 18:58Speaker 2: He built a dynasty at LA Shoot. So we had
- 19:01Speaker 2: to be the recruiter, the promoter, the hype man, the
- 19:04Speaker 2: setting up the lights, lining the field and everything else.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I mean, we got coaches this day and age in
- 19:10Speaker 2: the SEC they get ballet to the door, dropped off
- 19:15Speaker 2: by a graduate assistant driving them in an suv. They
- 19:20Speaker 2: couldn't fathom what guys like skip Bertman did. Absolute legend.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Tom Lugan Bill national college football analyst with ESPN. Coming
- 19:31Speaker 2: up next, check out our YouTube channel Out of Bound
- 19:35Speaker 2: Sports Back with Logan Bill in a second.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Of the wackle. Yeah, you damn right.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Here we go out of Bounds ESPN one oh five nine,
- 20:22Speaker 2: the zoned or do I not currently have a pulse?
- 20:27Speaker 2: We're live in the Bank Plus Studio. The show is
- 20:29Speaker 2: driven by your next GMC Sierra Truck, GMC Yukon check
- 20:34Speaker 2: out the Denali package, Fowler GMC dot com and Fowler
- 20:39Speaker 2: GMC Pearl Brandon. You can watch the show right now
- 20:42Speaker 2: on YouTube search out of Bound Sports. We welcome in
- 20:46Speaker 2: our friend Tom Louganville, national college football analyst with ESPN
- 20:52Speaker 2: and Luke's joins us on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line.
- 20:56Speaker 2: All right, are you getting excited about it? I mean,
- 20:58Speaker 2: do you still get the butter flies and get fired
- 21:01Speaker 2: up now that we're just a couple of weeks out.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 21:04Speaker 3: Absolutely, But I got a hit on one thing. That
- 21:06Speaker 3: little SoundBite you just played. Could any of your listeners
- 21:10Speaker 3: name who that is and what happened?
- 21:12Speaker 2: No? No, no, no?
- 21:15Speaker 1: That?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Oh man, come on you that's your trivia.
- 21:18Speaker 2: The day now, man, Well I should do that. That's
- 21:21Speaker 2: a great point to frame that up. You obviously cover
- 21:25Speaker 2: that school, and you know who the coach was. Jeff
- 21:28Speaker 2: Brown from Louisville.
- 21:30Speaker 3: That's exactly right. That was Jeff Brom played for the
- 21:32Speaker 3: Orlando Rage in the two thousand and one XFL season
- 21:36Speaker 3: where he got hit. I thought he was dead, Like, yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 3: it was. It was one of those hits that and
- 21:44Speaker 3: when he went when he went to the ground, he
- 21:47Speaker 3: did not move and it was one of those deals
- 21:49Speaker 3: where his head was off to the side but his
- 21:51Speaker 3: face mask was pointing straight in the air.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Oh good, And.
- 21:56Speaker 3: He got absolutely quobber in the You just played a
- 22:01Speaker 3: snippet of the sound bite, But what he says in
- 22:04Speaker 3: the in the in the full comment is football two
- 22:09Speaker 3: its core. So if you get a chance, go to YouTube,
- 22:12Speaker 3: rewatch it back and listen to the whole thing. But yes,
- 22:15Speaker 3: to answer your question, I am pumped. I just got
- 22:17Speaker 3: back from Clemson Georgia Tech, MC State and I head
- 22:23Speaker 3: to Louisville actually next weekend as my final camp tour
- 22:25Speaker 3: before we get ready for the season.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Oh that's gonna be so perfect because we got Ole
- 22:30Speaker 2: Miss and Louisville in Nashville week one, which is awesome
- 22:35Speaker 2: with Brom going against Golding and and Trinidad and the crew,
- 22:40Speaker 2: and then Louisville's breaking in I don't know what's gonna
- 22:43Speaker 2: happen there, if they're gonna go with the Ohio State
- 22:45Speaker 2: guy or if this West Georgia guy is gonna be
- 22:48Speaker 2: I don't want to compare it to Trinidad coming out
- 22:50Speaker 2: of nowhere from Fair State when Austin Simmons got hurt.
- 22:53Speaker 2: But it sounds to me like there's a lot of
- 22:55Speaker 2: back and forth going on here. Because you mentioned earlier
- 22:59Speaker 2: a month ago Lugs that Brom and maybe he didn't
- 23:03Speaker 2: mean to do this. They may have missed out. I don't,
- 23:06Speaker 2: you know, who knows what happens behind the series. They
- 23:08Speaker 2: may have missed out on three, four or five guys.
- 23:10Speaker 2: But Brom at Louisville, who plays old miss week one.
- 23:14Speaker 2: He's been going with guys who have a lot of experience. Yeah,
- 23:18Speaker 2: and the West Georgia guy has played, but this Ohio
- 23:20Speaker 2: State guy that transferred in has not. So that's a
- 23:24Speaker 2: little bit different animal for Brom in Louisville, right.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I was really surprised about it, you know, I
- 23:31Speaker 3: asked him about it at Act kickoff in July. He
- 23:34Speaker 3: kind of skirted around it a little bit because you know,
- 23:36Speaker 3: he went from Jack Plumber to Tyler Schuck to Miller Moss,
- 23:40Speaker 3: and all of those guys were fifth or six year
- 23:43Speaker 3: guys that had played a ton of football. And now
- 23:46Speaker 3: Lincoln Keenholds, who is super athletic, really mobile, has a
- 23:51Speaker 3: lot of upside, but you don't know what he's gonna do.
- 23:53Speaker 3: He hasn't played and so I was just really surprised
- 23:56Speaker 3: that he went that route at the quarterback position because
- 24:00Speaker 3: it's such a far deviation from what he's done the
- 24:02Speaker 3: previous three years.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and I wonder if he did miss out and
- 24:07Speaker 2: or because he has won there and he has chips
- 24:11Speaker 2: and he's in, you know, nowhere close to the hot seat,
- 24:15Speaker 2: if he was looking at this like, okay, we'll take
- 24:19Speaker 2: we'll take our licks. If as this guy gets up
- 24:22Speaker 2: and running and hopefully by game six or seven, he's
- 24:26Speaker 2: a totally different QB this year, and then if we're
- 24:28Speaker 2: able to hold on to him, then he could have
- 24:30Speaker 2: a really special year for them next year.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Well, yeah, he's got multiple years of eligibility. I think
- 24:36Speaker 3: that's what you know, what you're getting at is, you know,
- 24:39Speaker 3: so many of these guys are one and done, and
- 24:41Speaker 3: that's great, and he's had three straight of them. But
- 24:44Speaker 3: I think at the end of the day too, Like
- 24:46Speaker 3: every program, if you asked, every coach in America, like
- 24:49Speaker 3: Dave Dorn at mc state is going on his third
- 24:51Speaker 3: year with C. J. Bailey, Like that doesn't happen, like
- 24:56Speaker 3: you think about that, Like you had Haines King at
- 24:59Speaker 3: Georgia Tech been there for Like now, if a guy
- 25:03Speaker 3: doesn't play, he leaves, then you don't know what's going
- 25:06Speaker 3: to end up, you know, happening with him or guy
- 25:08Speaker 3: transfers and you know he's only got one year of eligibility,
- 25:11Speaker 3: so there's no like long term investment or development and
- 25:14Speaker 3: create stability at the position. I think every program in
- 25:17Speaker 3: America faces that challenge.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Agree Tom Logan Bille with ESPN on the Farm Bureau
- 25:22Speaker 2: Insurance guest line, and he'll be wrapping up his road
- 25:26Speaker 2: trip at Louisville next week and then that next week
- 25:32Speaker 2: week not week zero, but week one. As y'all know,
- 25:35Speaker 2: we have ole Miss and Louisville in Titan Stadium in Nashville,
- 25:40Speaker 2: and it could, I mean ole Miss has better players,
- 25:43Speaker 2: but brom is a hell of a coach with ten
- 25:45Speaker 2: plus years at Western Kentucky and Purdue and Louisville and
- 25:48Speaker 2: is one everywhere. So this may be this game could
- 25:53Speaker 2: go into the second half and could get a little
- 25:56Speaker 2: crazy and wild, even with Trinidad and Lacy, and that
- 26:00Speaker 2: will miss defensive line. Okay, So, Lukes, I didn't have
- 26:07Speaker 2: Indiana on my bingo card this time of year. Last year,
- 26:10Speaker 2: I recognized that they had gone to the College Football Playoff,
- 26:13Speaker 2: but I didn't have them going undefeated, slamming the door
- 26:16Speaker 2: in Alabama and Ohio State and then beating Miami and
- 26:20Speaker 2: winning the national championship. I text you a few minutes
- 26:24Speaker 2: ago with this new NIL era, and we're getting out
- 26:29Speaker 2: of the Bama, Georgia, LSU, Clemson, Southern col all that run,
- 26:34Speaker 2: you know, And I think it's tough to put your
- 26:36Speaker 2: finger on it. But how many teams do we have
- 26:39Speaker 2: out there they could win it? Considering Indiana did it
- 26:42Speaker 2: last year without the biggest NIL budget and as a
- 26:45Speaker 2: kind of a mid thirties recruiter. When you combine NIL
- 26:48Speaker 2: in high school, Lukes.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Are you talking about the funding and the resources to
- 26:52Speaker 3: be able to be a contender or are you talking
- 26:54Speaker 3: about talent acquisition and all that stuff.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I think I'm talking about how how many teams do
- 27:01Speaker 2: we believe have a legitimate shot to win the national championship.
- 27:06Speaker 2: As we're a couple of weeks away from the.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Season, I would probably say to maybe ten to sixteen,
- 27:14Speaker 3: somewhere in that range. And again, a lot of the
- 27:17Speaker 3: answer to that question too, and Indiana's a great example
- 27:19Speaker 3: of this is if you have the stars aligned and
- 27:23Speaker 3: the chips all fall where they're supposed to, and it
- 27:26Speaker 3: just makes for a magical year. It's kind of like
- 27:27Speaker 3: gene Chisck at Auburn that year where everything just played
- 27:31Speaker 3: the way it was supposed to, but with nil number one.
- 27:36Speaker 3: In order to get difference maker type of players, you
- 27:38Speaker 3: got to be able to compete in that realm. So
- 27:40Speaker 3: from a resources standpoint, you have to say, okay, well,
- 27:44Speaker 3: how many people are Georgia, how many people are LSU,
- 27:47Speaker 3: how many people are Techas or Ohio State? Well not many, right,
- 27:52Speaker 3: But if you have the funding and don't necessarily have
- 27:56Speaker 3: the brand, then you have the opportunity to do it.
- 28:00Speaker 3: Indiana did because you through funding and through the acquisition
- 28:05Speaker 3: of talent. As a result of that funding, you now
- 28:07Speaker 3: all of a sudden have the opportunity to change the
- 28:10Speaker 3: narrative what your program is. Right, because brands used to
- 28:13Speaker 3: be just succeed everything right. Well, now, yes, the brand helped.
- 28:17Speaker 3: It can put you in position, and obviously you're you're
- 28:20Speaker 3: well resourced. But you know, in Indiana, which everybody kind
- 28:24Speaker 3: of found out after the fact last year, I don't
- 28:28Speaker 3: think anybody realized they had the type of money coming
- 28:30Speaker 3: in that they had, which explains a lot, right, And
- 28:34Speaker 3: so you know, I don't you know who is that
- 28:36Speaker 3: next team. I think it just depends on if the
- 28:39Speaker 3: university and the institution decide that they're going to you know,
- 28:42Speaker 3: cast their line in that lake.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And just a few years ago it was I don't know,
- 28:49Speaker 2: two to six teams max they could win it.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean we I remember, you
- 28:55Speaker 3: know we're talking about and it was like this for
- 28:57Speaker 3: the first few years, you know, we're talking about Okay,
- 28:59Speaker 3: well you span from four to eight or or four
- 29:01Speaker 3: to twelve or whatever. We end up spanning to twelve. But
- 29:03Speaker 3: we ended up with essentially the same teams that we
- 29:08Speaker 3: all expected to be in the running or be playing
- 29:11Speaker 3: for the championship. We ended up having all those same teams.
- 29:14Speaker 3: It might have been a combination of two or three
- 29:15Speaker 3: here and there, but that was what ended up taking place.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Tom Lougan Bill on the Out of Bounds Show ESPN
- 29:23Speaker 2: one oh five nine The Zone. You know, before we
- 29:28Speaker 2: went to this new model, I would say on the
- 29:30Speaker 2: air for years that that Notre Dame, for example, Notre
- 29:32Speaker 2: Dame couldn't win it. Okay, you know when we you
- 29:36Speaker 2: and I were growing up, they were considered a power
- 29:39Speaker 2: and then they kind of left the the grid or
- 29:44Speaker 2: the zip code of championship level football. I know Kelly
- 29:48Speaker 2: took him to the National Championship in twenty twelve, but
- 29:50Speaker 2: they were embarrassed and Shaban took his foot off the gas.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You remember that game, and now you know, look at
- 29:58Speaker 2: their schedule in the end kind of just did it.
- 30:02Speaker 2: It's if you get your act together and get the
- 30:04Speaker 2: right coaching and funding, which I think dozens of teams
- 30:07Speaker 2: can do if they choose to do Lukes. Now it's
- 30:12Speaker 2: open to damn near thirty to fifty teams, not every year,
- 30:16Speaker 2: but they have the capability if they do things the
- 30:18Speaker 2: right way. Do you agree with that?
- 30:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I absolutely agree with that. But it comes down
- 30:23Speaker 3: to the exact thing that you just said, and that
- 30:25Speaker 3: is what are you willing to put forth right right?
- 30:28Speaker 3: And if you're willing as a university or from a
- 30:34Speaker 3: funding standpoint, whether it's a collective or booster donors. And
- 30:38Speaker 3: you know, combination of all of those sorts of things.
- 30:41Speaker 3: You know, you can't expect eleven and one results with
- 30:46Speaker 3: six and six resources, right, And so you've got to
- 30:50Speaker 3: make sure you put yourself in a position. And then
- 30:53Speaker 3: of course you know coaching and player evaluation and getting
- 30:56Speaker 3: the right guys. I mean, I think that's the one
- 30:58Speaker 3: thing it's easy to talk about this with Indiana. You
- 31:02Speaker 3: talk about a team that went out and hand picked.
- 31:08Speaker 3: It was almost like moneyball, like they knew exactly what
- 31:11Speaker 3: they needed, what they wanted. They age in year of eligibility, Trump,
- 31:17Speaker 3: name and ranking come out of high school, whether you
- 31:20Speaker 3: played at quarterback or didn't play at quarterback was a
- 31:23Speaker 3: deciding factor on who they took. And they had taken
- 31:25Speaker 3: Curtis Rourke who'd been a three year starter at Ohio
- 31:28Speaker 3: Banana Mendoz who started getting hot at Cal the year before,
- 31:31Speaker 3: and he wasn't on a very good team, but he
- 31:33Speaker 3: played a lot of football. Like there's certain common denominators
- 31:36Speaker 3: that make up the recipe for success in this era.
- 31:38Speaker 3: And if you have the financial resources and you have
- 31:41Speaker 3: a blueprint and a plan you can compete and be
- 31:43Speaker 3: in that top twelve to sixteen conversation every year.
- 31:49Speaker 2: So I think the SEC is they'll be fine. Okay,
- 31:55Speaker 2: I don't buy into this. Oh my god, they haven't
- 31:57Speaker 2: want it in three years, the league's going to be fine.
- 31:59Speaker 2: It's an adjustment. They went to non games. I don't.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I don't necessarily agree with it, but understand the financial impact.
- 32:08Speaker 2: But I think as long as they're letting in G
- 32:10Speaker 2: six teams, which I don't agree with, that that's where
- 32:12Speaker 2: we are right now. And when you catch a year
- 32:15Speaker 2: like this year, Lukes, I want you to walk me
- 32:17Speaker 2: through your thoughts. Where Penn State has an unbelievable schedule,
- 32:21Speaker 2: Indiana has an unbelievable schedule, and Notre Dame. Yeah, they may,
- 32:27Speaker 2: they may lose a spot here to pit with the
- 32:32Speaker 2: non game schedule and cannibalizing each other until we get
- 32:36Speaker 2: an expanded playoffs.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Your thoughts, Yeah, I mean I think so, But you
- 32:41Speaker 3: know what I don't. I don't believe you know, the
- 32:44Speaker 3: SEC not winning the title for three years has all
- 32:47Speaker 3: that much to do with any type of scheduling or
- 32:49Speaker 3: going to nine games. I think it has to do
- 32:51Speaker 3: with talent dispersement, and the fact that it's almost impossible
- 32:56Speaker 3: now to hoard all of the talent right and to
- 33:00Speaker 3: keep the twos and threes on your roster that could
- 33:03Speaker 3: be started somewhere else. So you what you've done is
- 33:07Speaker 3: you've made everybody better through the transfer portal, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 3: whether that's been in an unintended consequence or just the
- 33:15Speaker 3: nature of what the sport has become. And so I
- 33:20Speaker 3: think a lot of it it is scheduling, but not
- 33:22Speaker 3: so much going to nine games. It's who you do
- 33:24Speaker 3: or do not play, you know, Like, for example, NC
- 33:28Speaker 3: State has a great quarterback in CJ. Bailey. Amusing them
- 33:31Speaker 3: as an example because they have maybe the best schedule
- 33:35Speaker 3: of anybody in the ACT. I don't think they have Miami,
- 33:38Speaker 3: they don't have Loisle, they don't have SMU and so
- 33:42Speaker 3: they could be in a position where they've got this
- 33:44Speaker 3: great record, but the luck of the draw fell in
- 33:47Speaker 3: their favor, and that happened to Virginia last year. Virginia
- 33:51Speaker 3: had the best schedule of anybody in that conference. It
- 33:54Speaker 3: wasn't even close. They happened to hit on a quarterback
- 33:56Speaker 3: boom magic. So I think a little bit of is
- 34:00Speaker 3: just year in and year out. Do you hit on
- 34:03Speaker 3: all of the right marks or do you hit on
- 34:04Speaker 3: enough of them that put you in position? Because I
- 34:08Speaker 3: you know, I look at the SEC and I see, okay,
- 34:10Speaker 3: maybe they haven't won the national title. But I look
- 34:13Speaker 3: at their top to bottom depth, and I look at
- 34:15Speaker 3: the Big tens top to bottom death and I don't
- 34:17Speaker 3: think the Big ten's very good outside of three or fourteenths, right.
- 34:20Speaker 3: I think it's very very average. But there's this perception
- 34:23Speaker 3: that it's just really really good. Now Indiana's added to that, obviously,
- 34:29Speaker 3: but you still have a lot of fledgling programs. You know,
- 34:32Speaker 3: Michigan State hasn't been what they've been, Wisconsin certainly hasn't
- 34:35Speaker 3: been what they've been. We all know the struggles Nebraska
- 34:38Speaker 3: has had. Iowa has basically been Iowa. Northwestern's struggled. You know,
- 34:44Speaker 3: I think it's it's fair to point those things out
- 34:46Speaker 3: about that conference.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Tom Louganville on the Adda Bounds Show, brought to you
- 34:51Speaker 2: by your next GMC Sierra Truck at BOWLERGMC dot com.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Do you have do you have a team that you're
- 34:58Speaker 2: picking as the leader in the clubhouse? Is it Notre
- 35:01Speaker 2: Dame is it Ohio State, is it Georgia? Is it
- 35:03Speaker 2: another team going into the season.
- 35:06Speaker 3: I think when you look at the least amount of
- 35:08Speaker 3: turnover and the returning production of two teams from the
- 35:14Speaker 3: twenty twenty five year till now, you got to look
- 35:16Speaker 3: at Notre Dame in Georgia, very few defections through the portal,
- 35:20Speaker 3: very few additions unless absolutely needed, player development, established pillars
- 35:25Speaker 3: and foundation within the program. Both of those teams are
- 35:31Speaker 3: not spending anywhere near as much time trying to figure
- 35:35Speaker 3: out the pieces of a puzzle is the vast majority
- 35:38Speaker 3: of college football right now because they don't have the
- 35:41Speaker 3: roster swing to me, that gives them advantages.
- 35:44Speaker 2: And Georgia actually, for the SEC, Georgia pulls a pretty
- 35:49Speaker 2: damn good schedule and then Notre Dame's is a cake walk.
- 35:54Speaker 3: So there's no excuses for Notre Dame to not be
- 35:56Speaker 3: eleven and one or twelve and zero.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Yeah, how good do you so? For our listeners? You
- 36:02Speaker 2: know we have we have SEC fans from several different
- 36:06Speaker 2: schools listening right now, so they could they could run
- 36:09Speaker 2: into Notre Dame in the playoffs if they make it.
- 36:12Speaker 2: How good in your opinion? Because we're talking Trinidad, Chambliss
- 36:16Speaker 2: down here and then Arch and then maybe you know
- 36:22Speaker 2: a little bit of Sam Levitt and Gunner for those
- 36:25Speaker 2: that haven't watched him. How good is CJ. Carr the
- 36:29Speaker 2: quarterback at Notre.
- 36:30Speaker 3: Dame Elite top five, top ten at the worst pick
- 36:37Speaker 3: in next year's draft? In my opinion, I think he's special. Now.
- 36:41Speaker 3: He's more of your classic, pure prototypical quarterback in the
- 36:48Speaker 3: sense that he's going to play with his mind and
- 36:50Speaker 3: his arm and his feet within the pocket. He's going
- 36:53Speaker 3: to go through progressions. He's going to process quickly. He's
- 36:55Speaker 3: not to pull a rabbit out of the hat create
- 36:58Speaker 3: when things break down and make a bunch sandlot players.
- 37:00Speaker 3: That's not who he is. He's timing, precision, accuracy, armtown
- 37:05Speaker 3: is fantastic. I think he's really really good.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Okay, and you so you have the elite group? Is CJ. Carr,
- 37:17Speaker 2: Dante More, Trinidad, Chadliss, CJ.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Bailey, Arch, Yeah, maybe the kid at USC Mavea, Oh.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay.
- 37:30Speaker 3: He's really good, you know. And then I you know,
- 37:33Speaker 3: I want to wait and see on guys like Matier
- 37:36Speaker 3: and Sam Levitt to number one, see if they can
- 37:38Speaker 3: stay healthy, that's number one, and see if they can
- 37:41Speaker 3: play clean football. And then you know, you got guys
- 37:45Speaker 3: like Josh Hoover now at Indiana, who was spectacular at
- 37:49Speaker 3: tc although he turns the ball over a lot. I'm
- 37:51Speaker 3: a little worried about that because that's one thing Indiana
- 37:54Speaker 3: does not do. They do not beat themselves and they
- 37:56Speaker 3: don't turn the ball over. But I think he's a
- 38:00Speaker 3: a really good player and he's played a ton of football.
- 38:02Speaker 3: And then the guy that's replacing him at TCU through
- 38:05Speaker 3: like forty five touchdowns to ten interceptions as a starting
- 38:08Speaker 3: quarterback at Harvard for the last two years. So we'll
- 38:11Speaker 3: see how he makes a jump from the STS to TCU.
- 38:14Speaker 3: He played a really, really good player, so it'll be
- 38:17Speaker 3: Byron Brown's another one great production at USF. How does
- 38:21Speaker 3: he transition to Auburn. I think that's gonna be fun
- 38:24Speaker 3: to watch it. So there's gonna be some guy will
- 38:26Speaker 3: be interested to see emergence this fall for our listeners.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Logan Bill Luke's mentioned matteer Ole Miss will play down
- 38:35Speaker 2: again this year and they go back to Oklahoma just
- 38:37Speaker 2: the way the scheduling went, and he mentioned Sam Levitt
- 38:40Speaker 2: who was in Startville last year. Y'all remember that game,
- 38:44Speaker 2: and Ole Miss and Mississippi State will play Levitt and
- 38:48Speaker 2: then Mississippi State will host Auburn this year and they'll
- 38:51Speaker 2: play Byron Brown. So just to give you an idea
- 38:54Speaker 2: as far as connecting the dots on what quarterbacks you
- 38:58Speaker 2: will see if you go Georgia one in the SEC,
- 39:04Speaker 2: and I agree with returning starters and how they've recruited
- 39:10Speaker 2: and retention. Yeah, who's the second team for you? Is
- 39:14Speaker 2: it LSU, Texas, BAM or someone else.
- 39:19Speaker 3: I think it would be Texas right now. And then
- 39:23Speaker 3: I think you can lump LSU at Alabama all those teams,
- 39:26Speaker 3: you know, old myths kind of together. Uh. You know,
- 39:28Speaker 3: we don't know on Florida yet, we don't know, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 3: which South Carolina team is going to show up, so
- 39:36Speaker 3: it'll I would probably say Texas. I think Texas on
- 39:39Speaker 3: offense could end up being like having a spectacular, like
- 39:44Speaker 3: defining season on offense.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Yeah, they need to bounce back. They've struggled, haven't they
- 39:49Speaker 2: the last couple of years. On the the.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Last six or seven weeks the last season they were
- 39:54Speaker 3: on fire. So if if arch Manning's progression picks up
- 39:59Speaker 3: where left off there. I mean with the additions they
- 40:02Speaker 3: made on offense, Hollywood, some others at running back, Cam
- 40:05Speaker 3: Coleman at wide out, like they've they've got some real weapons.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Uh Ole. Miss and Mississippi State play back to back
- 40:12Speaker 2: weekends at Texas in late October, so and Arch Manning.
- 40:18Speaker 2: I still can't believe Misissippi State was up seventeen points
- 40:21Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter on Now, that was earlier in
- 40:24Speaker 2: the year, right, this is before Lougan Bill referencing around
- 40:29Speaker 2: game six or seven when they started to figure it out.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Even even Sark talked about it this summer that he missed,
- 40:35Speaker 2: and you know, they they got their ducks in a
- 40:37Speaker 2: row and then started started rolling Tom Luganbill on the
- 40:41Speaker 2: Out of Bound show ESPN one oh five nine of
- 40:45Speaker 2: the Zone. Okay, if there's a surprise, you know, two
- 40:50Speaker 2: names were not talking about because there's just so many
- 40:53Speaker 2: big names in the league is and they've been kind
- 40:57Speaker 2: of tucked away. But they've proven that they can win,
- 41:00Speaker 2: and that's hypel at Tennessee and Elko at A and M.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Do you think that they could sneak up on some people?
- 41:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I think A and M is going to be
- 41:07Speaker 3: very good. I think the Tennessee is going to depend
- 41:09Speaker 3: on if they end up playing with a true freshman quarterback.
- 41:11Speaker 3: They could end up, you know, lining up with Faison Brandon,
- 41:14Speaker 3: a true freshman, and then you know, they got to
- 41:16Speaker 3: play on the road at Georgia Tech week two, so
- 41:19Speaker 3: that that would be interesting. I think Josh Hipel's done
- 41:22Speaker 3: a great job. Mike Colco has done a great job.
- 41:24Speaker 3: I don't think there's any reason why those two teams
- 41:25Speaker 3: shouldn't be playoff contenders.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Wow, I didn't realize that Tennessee goes to Georgia Tech'd
- 41:34Speaker 2: be interesting to see what Tech can do without Haines
- 41:37Speaker 2: King and Faultner.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Oh yeah, uh.
- 41:41Speaker 2: Haines was one of my Haines King is one of
- 41:44Speaker 2: my favorite players the last few years in college football,
- 41:47Speaker 2: talking about like a reboot and redemption story coming out
- 41:50Speaker 2: of A and M and having a great career Tech.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Of course you started there too, and I mean he
- 41:57Speaker 2: was ridiculous, ton of fun to watch. He may make
- 42:01Speaker 2: some noise with the Carolina Panthers, Bryce Yon and you
- 42:05Speaker 2: know Bryce Young and them. All right, all right, so
- 42:08Speaker 2: where you headed this week?
- 42:10Speaker 3: I go to I got College Football Live on Thursday
- 42:13Speaker 3: and Friday. Then I head to Louisville over the weekend
- 42:16Speaker 3: for their camp tour, and then I don't have a
- 42:19Speaker 3: game on week here, but I open up with Mississippi
- 42:21Speaker 3: State Week one.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Oh, you're going to be in Starbull MSU.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Yeah, in Louisiana Monroe.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. So Camaro Taylor's somewhat you know, I mean,
- 42:32Speaker 2: he started a couple of games at the end, but
- 42:36Speaker 2: people are all fired up about the the six foot
- 42:40Speaker 2: four to two and thirty pounds true sophomore out of
- 42:43Speaker 2: Knoxby County, which is Jeffrey Simmons, among others. Those that
- 42:48Speaker 2: program beats people damn near every Friday night. So all right,
- 42:52Speaker 2: this is going to be great. We're going to be
- 42:54Speaker 2: able to do even more of a deep dive with
- 42:56Speaker 2: LUs on Louisville as we get ready for week one
- 42:59Speaker 2: O miss in Louisville, Tom Lougan Bill, have a great week.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Thank you, buddy.
- 43:03Speaker 3: We'll do man, Thank you, Bud.
- 43:04Speaker 2: That was great. Logan Bille talking quarterbacks, how many teams
- 43:09Speaker 2: could win a national championship, he thinks up to twelve
- 43:13Speaker 2: to sixteen teams now in this new era and model
- 43:17Speaker 2: of Nil and Portal and where you can steal talent
- 43:21Speaker 2: from the from the big boys and the big brands
- 43:25Speaker 2: and the powers. But he likes Georgia and Notre Dame,
- 43:28Speaker 2: the retention who they have coming back and can't wait
- 43:34Speaker 2: to see what plays out. We're live in the Bank
- 43:36Speaker 2: plus studio, out of bounds, ESPN one oh five. Down
- 43:40Speaker 2: to the Zone,
