- 2:39is going to be stopping by the show as well. But it's Monday,
- 2:44which means we welcome in a different mayor to the show each week. One
- 2:46of our favorites, they're all our favorites, but this guy, especially one
- 2:50of our favorites. It's Sam to Alban's Mayor Scott James. Good morning,
- 2:53sir. How are you? Good morning, Dave. I am wonderful for
- 2:55a Monday, especially for any anytime you're actually all out about on the Monday,
- 3:00it's it's a good thing. How are How are things in the lands
- 3:04of the of the Red Dragons? There mayre just great things are happening all
- 3:08the time. People are coming to Saint Albans to attend our events and eat
- 3:15at our restaurants and shop at our shops, and good things are happening.
- 3:19And uh, you know, we're always looking to get better. So it
- 3:23keeps me busy. I'm sure it does. We've got several things I want
- 3:25to talk to you about this morning, but to overall, what's what's new
- 3:29in town? Well, Friday night or this past Saturday night. You know,
- 3:34we build a plaza there off Old Main on C Street, and we
- 3:38had a dedication this past Saturday night. We call it named it the Joe
- 3:42Dobbs Plaza. Now for people that it's not familiar with Joe, he passed
- 3:46away in two thy fifteen, but he come to Appalachia about fifty eight years
- 3:51ago, and he brought Appalachian music to the world. I mean he's he's
- 3:55now worldwide. Was a great fiddler player, but he was the original owner
- 4:00of Fret and Fiddle right there off Main Street on Pennsylvania. And you know,
- 4:05he has a lot to do with the exploding live music scene that we
- 4:10have gone on on Old Maine in Saint Albans. I mean, three four
- 4:14nights a week, there's music being played somewhere. So he had the dedication.
- 4:17Yes, we did if well attended. And you know, I couldn't
- 4:21think of a better person than name it that. Yeah, And that's kind
- 4:25of one of those iconic places. And long before I even moved here,
- 4:28I was familiar with Fred and Fiddle because it's just one of those places that
- 4:30people kind of if you're into live music, people kind of gravitates toward music
- 4:34of all kinds. They just kind of travitate toward the place. Yeah,
- 4:39they used to have a lot of jam sessions. And there's a friend of
- 4:41mine that used to go and have jam sessions with Joe. I personally,
- 4:46in my sixty four years, I never met the gentleman, but I've heard
- 4:51nothing but great things about him, and I would love to have heard him
- 4:56play the fiddle. I know, you guys have been working. Last time
- 4:59you were here, the last couple of times you talked about the demolition of
- 5:02the old high school. How's that coming along. It's coming along fantastic.
- 5:06We've got the gym area down, we've got the auditorium area down there in
- 5:13the process of kind of abating the middle part of the building, and once
- 5:16they getting it abated, the rest of it's going to come down. So
- 5:19we're excited about there. It's been there an iore for thirty two years and
- 5:25soon to be no more. And again, it's just one of those things.
- 5:28We talk about this with you and with others from county officials on down.
- 5:31The public sees these buildings, they drive by him, they see what
- 5:34iceores they are, how dangerous they are for for kids, and sometimes you
- 5:39have squatters and things like that, and there it's not that easy to just
- 5:42go in and say tear it down. There's a long process that goes along
- 5:46with them. That's a huge process. We didn't own the building, yeah,
- 5:49and we started finding the owner and he owed us seven hundred plus thousand
- 5:55dollars in fines, so in lieu of the fines, he signed the building
- 5:58over to us. But we had a lot of legal issues and hoops we
- 6:02had to jump through, but it is coming down now and then once it's
- 6:08done, then city council will determine what the purpose of that property is going
- 6:13to be. Now. One of the issues we have in Saint Albans is
- 6:15newer housing. I personally think one thing it needs to be discussed about that
- 6:20is subdividing it into lots, build single dwelling homes that people own, no
- 6:26rental property and start bringing property values back up in the area, but also
- 6:30start bringing newer housing to Saint Albans, and that's certainly something that has needed.
- 6:35Scott James with us, the Mayor of Saint Alban's. Let's review a
- 6:39little bit. How was yack Fest of the Tour de col biggest and the
- 6:44best yack fest that we've had to date. Saturday night might have been the
- 6:47biggest evening we ever had. We had Bucky Covington at six o'clock and Davidson
- 6:53Brothers at eight o'clock. It was unbelievable. Friday night we had Handed Asher.
- 6:58There was some geo fencing done on numbers. We haven't gotten those back
- 7:01yet, but we're expecting that they'll show that it's the biggest crowd we've ever
- 7:06had, and they estimated they had about fourteen fifteen hundred paid participants for the
- 7:15Torticol, but they estimated probably closer to twenty two hundred going down the river
- 7:19because people just put in wherever and join the party and everything else. So
- 7:25it was a great weekend for Saint Albans, the Coal River Group, and
- 7:30just the area in general. The great thing about those events, Mayor is
- 7:34people don't just as you said, put in the river, they eat,
- 7:38they go to the restaurants, say, they go to the various businesses and
- 7:42stuff. And so I'm presuming over the next couple of months you'll get the
- 7:46final numbers and even into the economic impact, because i mean hotels or fall
- 7:50everything right, You're exactly right, and you know we have airbnbs in Saint
- 7:57Albans. We're trying to get in touch with you there to see if you
- 8:01know. I'm sure they were rented. I know people were looking for him.
- 8:05Hotels in neighboring communities. The businesses in the area always have record weekends
- 8:11during that weekend, and so we are trying to figure out the economic impact.
- 8:16It's gotta be six figures in there. I'm not sure exactly how high,
- 8:20but uh, it's just a great event and it's great for the city
- 8:24of Saint Albans and neighboring community. Yeah, it's not just about Saint Albans,
- 8:28it's in It impacts South Charleston, Tays Valley and all the other areas
- 8:31as well as somebody who is a native Saint what do you what do you
- 8:37guys call yourself Saint Albion's, Saint albans Nights, Saint albans Tonians, Saint
- 8:43albans Tonians. All right, As a native Saint alban Tonian, did you
- 8:46ever think that you would have that many people that would be interested in coming
- 8:52to float down the river and to come. I mean, I know Saint
- 8:54Alban's and when you were grown up was I mean it was a hub for
- 8:58everything. He had a lot more people there. But did you ever think
- 9:01it would be a destination like it is now? No? Not until we
- 9:05started, when I became mayor and started the yac Fest, we didn't know
- 9:11how it was going to go. We knew the tour to Cold grows every
- 9:16year. Bill Curry and the Cold River Group does a great job, but
- 9:20uh, you know, a lot of volunteers just grabbed the bull by the
- 9:26horns and no, to be honest, I did not see that happening.
- 9:30But now we just see bigger and better things coming to Saint Alban's. Any
- 9:33new businesses coming to town here? Lately? We had a Curry Creations open
- 9:39up on Old Maine. It's a cool little store. She will customize water
- 9:46bottles, t shirts, different things like that. She's got a variety of
- 9:50items there. It's fantastic. Just out as Saint Alban's Sight Sounds open up
- 10:00there where the Go Marty is. They're in Jefferson right behind there. So
- 10:07uh, you know, we continue to look for businesses. We've been in
- 10:13contact with our d Management out in New York about the mall. They've had
- 10:18a couple of bites on a couple of the buildings there, but they're not
- 10:22the easiest company to work for. You know, they won't go in and
- 10:26fix the building up for companies. They expect them to do it themselves.
- 10:30And you know, you got to work with people to be successful. Indeed,
- 10:35again we're talking to Mayor Scott James here on Mayor Monday five eighty live
- 10:39from the Parmar Stores Studio a couple of big events I want to get to.
- 10:43One of those actually involves us, and that's the stations here at WVRC
- 10:48Media teaming up with Parmar Stores to give away five hundred gallons of free gas.
- 10:52Now you can registrate a number of places to get that gas including Trojan
- 10:58Landy, Marine Valley Outdoors, the West Virginia Marketplace, inside Capital Market,
- 11:01Kidderouse, p Furniture, Pepperoni Grill, Saint alban City Hall, or the
- 11:05Appalachian Cannabis Company. And we're actually going to draw the winner of that.
- 11:09Again, that's five hundred gallons of free gasoline. We're gonna draw the winner
- 11:13on July twenty ninth. We'll all be down there a broadcasting live down at
- 11:18Old Maine. Big Old Party starts at ten am noon down there. So
- 11:22it's a great opportunity to possibly come down and win yourself five hundred gallons of
- 11:26gas and who couldn't use that, but an opportunity to kind of hang out
- 11:30an old main too. Yeah. Well, it's a great opportunity to bring
- 11:33people again to Old Maine, to Saint Albans in the process of them participating
- 11:39in the gas giveaway. They're going to visit our shops, and you know,
- 11:43we always encourage our business owners to leave your doors open during these events
- 11:48so people can visit and see what we have to offer, and good things
- 11:54usually happen from that. We appreciate West Virginia Radio Corps choosing Saint os O
- 12:01Main Street to uh hold this event, and we're looking forward to it again.
- 12:07That's July twenty ninth, ten to twelve, five hundred gallons. We
- 12:11have a place over at City Hall, the Parmar and Saint Albans any Parmar
- 12:16storm, Yeah, and the other other locations that Dave mentioned. Put your
- 12:22name in, guys and come on down on July twenty nine. Is gonna
- 12:26win it to me as well. Be you. You got a couple of
- 12:28other big events going on in Saint Aubuns you want to talk about, Yeah,
- 12:31we do. August twelfth is Heritage Days. It used to be known
- 12:33as Founders Day. It's put on by the Saint Augus Historical Society. They
- 12:39have formed a committee. Uh there. We're excited about that. It just
- 12:45you know, just celebrate the heritage in the history of Saint Albans. It's
- 12:48going to be a great event. And then on that's August twelfth, starting
- 12:52at eleven am, goes to five pm. Then August twenty sixth, we're
- 12:58gonna have the second Mountaineer Mayan Street. Last year was a great event.
- 13:03This year it's gonna be bigger. I know the pep bands coming. H
- 13:07They're gonna have at least five athletes there to sign autographs and pictures, including
- 13:13Owen Schmidt. Were excited about that. Uh, it goes from one to
- 13:16eight. Uh, they're gonna, like I said, the mascot's going to
- 13:20be there, the dance team, that cheerleaders. Again. It is a
- 13:26wonderful event. So mark you calendar and come on down. It's always the
- 13:31Saturday before w opens this season. A lot of good things going on in
- 13:35the Land of the Red Dragons. Mayor is always. I appreciate you being
- 13:37here. Well, I appreciate you having us, Dave, and we're excited
- 13:41about the direction we're headed in. And Uh, anytime you need me up
- 13:46here to talk about Saint Alban's you know that's one thing I do well.
- 13:50You do. See you're a good talker. Yeah there, You're gonna be
- 13:52okay once you learn how to open up a little bit more. Yeah,
- 13:56there's Scott James. I appreciate if five eighty Live is bright to part by

- 17:07Bob Huggins situation. Yet another another turn in that Jeff Jenks is going to
- 17:11join us from the newsroom to talk about that a little bit later on.
- 17:12I want to welcome in though now Conankanicy Commissier Ben Celano. Good morning,
- 17:15Sarah, how are you? Good morning doing great? Thanks for having me
- 17:18on. Thank you for being there because I know it's a busy day for
- 17:19you and not just you, but everybody in the county. And I'm gonna
- 17:22get to that a little bit later on, but before we get into that
- 17:26and the dealings of the Commission, I'll talk about to you a little bit.
- 17:30You made the announcement last week via social media and press release and also
- 17:33you were on Hoppy Show that you will not be running for governor on the
- 17:36Democratic ticket next year. What led to that decision, you know, it
- 17:38was I'd been considering it for months, and you know, when I got
- 17:41into the twenty twenty race, I got in late. It was around Octo
- 17:45of twenty nineteen when I announced. I knew that I had an uphill battle
- 17:48against the sitting governor, and I knew that it would be a tough race.
- 17:52But I've never really backed down from a fight, so decided to get
- 17:56in. Had a blast, honestly, especially the debate and you know,
- 18:00even the Democratic debates in the primary. But uh, you know, when
- 18:03you make a decision like that, it's not just my decision, it because
- 18:07it affects everyone. It affects my family, it affects my law firm,
- 18:10it affects the other businesses that I'm a part of. And so ultimately,
- 18:14when I decided that I wasn't going to run, it was based on,
- 18:18you know, several factors. Number one, did I want to put that
- 18:21much money into a race, you know, try to thread that needle in
- 18:26the general at the end and try to win it, you know, when
- 18:29there's considerable risk, you know, running statewide without the last named mansion as
- 18:33a Democrat is very difficult, and so I didn't know if I want to
- 18:37do that. I didn't know if I wanted to take a year off from
- 18:41my you know, being with the family and miss soccer matches and everything else,
- 18:45and and and uh, you know, also taking a year off from
- 18:48my law firm. That that would be very to end the commission. You
- 18:52know, I need to be at the Commission right now. And so those
- 18:55things were really ultimately decided. Um made me decide that I wasn't going to
- 19:00It was all those things. And it is believe that Huntington Mayor Steve Williams,
- 19:03your friend, is going to be running for governor. Formal announcement is
- 19:04expected from him at some point soon. Could be some opposition from the other
- 19:10Democrats, but if he runs, he will be the nominee and he'll face
- 19:12off against filling name here could be Attorney General Patrick Morris, He's Secretary of
- 19:17State, Warner Automagneate, Chris Miller, Auditor J. B. Mccuski,
- 19:21out of More Cabina, et cetera, et cetera. Will you be actively
- 19:22campaigning for Mayor Williams? You know what, I'm gonna wait and see.
- 19:26I you know, the mayor hasn't announced. Obviously, we are good friends.
- 19:29I think the world of him. I think he's done a great job
- 19:30in Huntington. I think he'll do a great job if he wins the election
- 19:33as governor. But he's got an uphill battle as well. You know.
- 19:36It's one of the good things that I had was statewide, decent statewide name
- 19:41recognition, not to the point of you know, some of the others that
- 19:45have been in politics forever, but I was between seventy and eighty percent statewide.
- 19:49So he's he's got to spend some money. He's got to raise some
- 19:52money and spend some money gainst name I d up there, and then convince
- 19:56people that he's not one of the national Democrats. You know that. They
- 20:00say, that's a big battle for Democrats right now. It is tough.
- 20:03It is tough, and whenever you're fighting kind of that message, it is
- 20:07an uphill battle. But I you know, obviously Steve Is is a dear
- 20:11friend, uh And I've got dear friends on the Republican side too. You
- 20:15know, I think the world Chris Miller, he and I you know,
- 20:18he's helped a lot of a lot of families in Kanaan and in Cabal and
- 20:23more capital. You know, there's some really good people on both sides.
- 20:26So we'll see what I do. UM, I want to get to Commission
- 20:30business. First of all, Commission President Kent Carper was back behind the desk
- 20:33last week followed his health issues and everything else will win along any comment on
- 20:37Commissioner Carper being back, You know what I'm I'm glad he's back. You
- 20:41know, this is uh Commissioner Wheeler. Commission Wheler does a great job.
- 20:47He and I've tried to hold down the fort while Kent was gone. You
- 20:48know, it's there's a lot that goes on, particularly when you're you know,
- 20:52he's the president, so he deals with a lot of stuff every day,
- 20:56just administrative type of things, and so we would try to fill in
- 21:00for him. And you know he's back. Uh, it's hard to replace
- 21:03that kind of experience. Uh. Whatever happens at the County Commission quite frankly,
- 21:07Kent has seen it before. Uh. And and Hill reference you know,
- 21:11oh, well this happened back in you know, nineteen ninety eight,
- 21:15and this is how we dealt with it. And we just don't have that
- 21:18institutional additional knowledge, you know, so uh, you know, we're glad
- 21:22that that that is back and um you know Lance, uh, Lance and
- 21:26I you know did all we could while he was gone, and uh,
- 21:30you know, now that he's back, that will that will definitely help out,
- 21:33particularly when you're dealing with the what's in your first foundation those types of
- 21:34things coming up, and Kent was very involved in the drafting of of you
- 21:40know that law and uh you know, worked with folks at the state to
- 21:45kind of move that forward. Talk with the canal Kunty Commissier Ben Selango here
- 21:48on five ety live. Editors note, I have reached out to Commissioner Carper
- 21:52and his staff and I hope hope to have him on the show either to
- 21:55day tomorrow. That's fingers crossed. I'm working on that right now. Five
- 21:57ety Live is brought to part by Gender Physical Therapy seven convenient locations along I
- 22:02sixty four and they are hiring for both license and technically trained staff. If
- 22:06you need more information, visit generations PT dot com. All right, Commission's
- 22:08talk about today. Today's a special day. Hey, it's a big day.
- 22:11If five years ago today we cut the ribbon at the Shawnee Sports Complex
- 22:15and today we're going to we're having an event at ten thirty at the Shawnee.
- 22:21Everybody's welcome. It's free play, all day, pools free, everything's
- 22:25free. We've got snow cones that'll be it'll be a nice event. I
- 22:26think the weather is looking good last time I chat. Yeah, it's gonna
- 22:30be great. So, and we're also going to unveil the economic numbers,
- 22:33which you know, thanks to Charleston CVB for calculating those numbers. Over the
- 22:37years. I would get the numbers from individual tournaments, individual events, but
- 22:42I had never seen the actual overall economic impact calculated. But just to give
- 22:48you, I'll let you break a couple of the numbers here this morning,
- 22:52just to give you some idea of what we're talking about. Since Shawnee opened
- 22:56in twenty eighteen, we have had fifty three thousand, five hundred and sixty
- 23:03four athletes at the facility. There are over thirty seven thousand hotel rooms sold
- 23:10directly attributable to the Shawnee Sports Complex. So those are the type of numbers
- 23:14we're going to release today just to kind of give people an idea of,
- 23:17you know, how their money was spent and how it's impacted the community since
- 23:21twenty eighteen when you first, you and others first came up with the idea,
- 23:26and it was I mean, you were you were the big dog behind
- 23:30this when you first came up with this idea. You knew commission that it
- 23:33would be big, But did you have any idea in your wildest imagination that
- 23:37it would be this big? What I knew is I knew it would work.
- 23:41I didn't know if it would work to this extent. And you know
- 23:45it's we had that commercial during the governor's race a few years ago when when
- 23:49we talk about how I sketched Shawnee out and Hapy, that's absolutely true.
- 23:52I was sitting Autadelphia with a couple of other people and sketched it out and
- 23:56it was a terrible rendering. It was awful when oh, you're not an
- 23:59arc, Oh yeah, trust me, I am not. I cannot draw.
- 24:02But um, I knew it would work. I knew it would bring
- 24:04people into town because I had seen it. You know, our youngest son,
- 24:08Cayden, played travel soccer all over He's been all over the world playing
- 24:14and so I knew that there would be a nice draw coming in. Would
- 24:18we be able to do it on budget was a big question that I had.
- 24:22You know that that area is primarily it's fielded, and so you had
- 24:27we had to go in and put I think it was like a million cubic
- 24:30feed of concrete down just to stabilize here. And so there was a lot
- 24:34of challenges with that area. So I knew that it would if we could
- 24:37build it, it would work. The question was could we built it on
- 24:41budget on time, and we did and it's been a overwhelming success. So
- 24:45the entire community is in the county and all other regions are invited out for
- 24:49for the big happenings today and new it starts at what time ten thirty?
- 24:52I think Mayor James was here just a minute where he's a tough act follower,
- 24:56but the I think he's coming out too. I think he's coming out.
- 24:59So you would have a lot of mayors and others will be out there
- 25:00too because it's a a weather's going to be great, So invite everyone and
- 25:03if you've never had an opportunity to see what they've done, you know,
- 25:07maybe you don't have kids or grandkids that will take apart and just go out
- 25:08there and check it out. Today. Yeah, come out, you know,
- 25:11We've made a lot of upgrades since twenty eighteen. We've added the Shawnee
- 25:15Pavilion, We've enhanced the grass area so it's more in line with what USU
- 25:21Soccer requires when they're when we're hosting larger and larger events. We're getting ready
- 25:26to build the new entrance building. You know, the Senator of Mansion was
- 25:30able to secure a three million dollars grant, and you know Kudo's to Governor
- 25:33Justice, he also got us a million dollar grant. So we're building a
- 25:38four million dollar entrance building and just expanding on what we have. So we've
- 25:42made a lot of upgrades. We've got pickleball, We've spent a lot of
- 25:45money on the pool. We've added a championship style basketball courts out there.
- 25:51So a lot going on. If you have not been out, police stop
- 25:53bytes free to play all day. Bring the kids, let them run around.
- 25:56It'll wear them out for a bedtime. What is the latest commission with
- 26:02the Capital Sports Complex downe to him, we're moving. I mean, you
- 26:06know that's uh. In fact, it's I'm glad this event is today because
- 26:10when people see the numbers, I think that even those are that are a
- 26:11little bit hasn't about the Capital Sports Complex. Will understand how significant of an
- 26:15impact these facilities can have. So we're We've got a board meeting that will
- 26:19be coming up soon and then we'll be making some decisions. Obviously, any
- 26:25decision the board makes, it's more of a recommendation that goes back to city
- 26:27Council and goes to the County Commission. So you know, the board won't
- 26:33have a blank checkbook. You know, if they want to spend money,
- 26:34it has to be approved by the by the City Council and by the County
- 26:38Commission. So but we're pressing forward. There's been some criticism, uh,
- 26:42Commissioner levied at the projects, and it isn't funded properly. The money isn't
- 26:47there. It's a kind of pie in the skytop project, which, by
- 26:49the way, some of the thing things that said about the Shawnee Sports Complex.
- 26:53Any comment to any of the naysiers, Well, um, first of
- 26:57all, I yeah, I mean I'm used to that. I think anytime
- 27:00that there's a project, there are folks that are that are critical. But
- 27:04that's that's good. I mean I want to hear their perspective. Uh,
- 27:08you know, when we when we move forward with the Capital Sports Complex.
- 27:14We went forward, we went and we've asked for We did a forty million
- 27:17dollar grant requests through the Federal Government, Center's mansion and capita that was a
- 27:22joint through the city in the county. Twenty five million of that is advanced.
- 27:26We're actively working with um. I've got some meeting schedule with some local
- 27:30companies that want naming rights to the facility. We've got hospitals interested in the
- 27:36facility using it for therapy, So there's a there's a lot of money out
- 27:40there that can come in. Of course, the kind of Commission just transferred
- 27:42five million dollars over for the architectural engineering side and potential property acquisition. But
- 27:49yeah, no, I hear those comments. I hear those criticisms. It's
- 27:52the same thing I heard with Shawnee. And here we are, you know,
- 27:56five years later, and it's been a tremendous success. Speaking of criticism,
- 27:59we got a tech for you, because I know you're always open any
- 28:00time you come on the show to take a text or social I got one
- 28:03for you. Said, how in the world can the Kanaw County government justify
- 28:07three new magistrates, one new circuit judge, while closing three Title one schools
- 28:12due to declining population. It doesn't add up. Well, um, that
- 28:18was the state legislature did that? I mean they, I guess there was
- 28:22a survey that went out from the Supreme Court and then it was presented to
- 28:26the legislature. The legislature added three magistrates and one circuit judge in Kanaw County,
- 28:33and there were other magistrates and other circuit judges throughout West Virginia. And
- 28:36so it wasn't our decision, it wasn't our option. When you get a
- 28:40mandate from the legislature, you follow it. And so the only thing that
- 28:44we have to do is figure out how to pay for it. Yeah,
- 28:45I mean that truly. They it was an unfunded mandate. And now we're
- 28:51we've hired we're going to hire an architect to come up with a plan where
- 28:53we can add space. It's it's actually considerable amount of space that you need.
- 28:57It's not just like a magister courtroom or a circuit court. You've also
- 29:00need office space either. So yeah, no, I hear you. And
- 29:04there was some some some talk in the news last week about some security issues
- 29:10that need to be addressed. I know, we don't want to go into
- 29:11all the I loved by the way I was listening, I think to the
- 29:15kind of commission meeting and somebody had made it. One of the judges made
- 29:18a comment or something, and you said, do you really want to do
- 29:19this online? Well? Probably not a good idea, but overall, let's
- 29:23talk about yeah, so security. Yeah, and in fairness that judge,
- 29:26I don't think he realized it was streaming. And so anytime we get like
- 29:30undercover police officers or indent or some of the others that come in, we
- 29:34always cut the live feed for their safety and for their protection. So I
- 29:37didn't want there to be you know, you don't want any perceived security deficiencies
- 29:44broadcast. YEA, generally speaking, not a good idea. Yeah, so
- 29:48that's the only reason I said that. But I will tell you that the
- 29:51judges concerns I think are well founded, and we've been working on them for
- 29:56several months now. You know, we've engaged he is an architect, we're
- 30:00working with the Sheriff's department. It makes sure that we can we can solve
- 30:03any any of those issues. Covered a lot of ground that day in a
- 30:07short amount of time. I know, you got to get out to Shawnee,
- 30:08So Commistreser Slango's always pleasure to having the show. We'll talk soon man.

- 33:29And unfortunately that's kind of where we are in the world of sports tourism,
- 33:34so on and so forth. You've got to have the corporations to be involved.
- 33:37I mean, if you're a major league fan of NFL, major League
- 33:40baseball, basketball, whatever, you know, you got to have those corporate
- 33:43sponsors. But I do, I do appreciate the texture bringing it up.
- 33:46What a welcome in now WV all American, former Kansas City chief and all

- 34:08Kids Golf Tournament and all that goes along with it. Yes, sir,
- 34:12looking forward to it. Yeah, this is our this is our thirty third
- 34:15year rock in this thing, and we haven't missed the year, even even
- 34:20the COVID year. We were we were able to slide this thing in prior
- 34:23to them shutting the state down. So we're we're excited. I mean,
- 34:29a bunch of great, great alumni going to be involved this year and uh
- 34:32and you know, keeping my fingers crossed for the weather and hopefully the weather
- 34:37is is uh, you know kind to us, and you know, just
- 34:42a great gathering for for a wonderful cause. Man, it's all about them
- 34:45kids and and the hospital up there WVU, the Children's Hospital and the Buddy
- 34:52Walks supporting them them folks. Uh, it's just a it's just a it
- 34:57warms my heart day. It just warms my heart that this thing is still
- 35:00doing what it's doing. And thanks to you know, Parmar and types of
- 35:05you guys are our title sponsors, and you guys have been very generous to
- 35:09us and to them kids as you are in all the communities that you can
- 35:15find a Parmar store. Uh. You know, we love you guys and
- 35:17appreciate you being part of it. Anxious to see y'all. It's gonna be
- 35:22a great time, you know, it always is. And of course it
- 35:23all starts on Thursday. There's a be a kickoff party at Tropics. They're
- 35:29at Cranberry Square, Morgantown, followed by the golf with a lot of a
- 35:32lot of folks from the business community and a lot of WVU legends are on
- 35:36here. I mean last year Joe's was my first time at the golf tournament
- 35:38and I'm out there with a couple folks and I'm looking around them going,
- 35:43Okay, my god, there's you know, filling name here, and there's
- 35:45this one, there's it's it's it's hard to believe there's that many WVU legends
- 35:50all in one place. At this golf tournament. Well you know something I
- 35:54think again, Uh, you know, the motivation is as the Children's hospital.
- 36:00You know, these guys and gals, uh, you know, because
- 36:05we've got cheerleaders and you know basketball represented and and you know the football guys
- 36:10and you know, we all we all were part of you know the relationship
- 36:16with Children's Hospital. We went over and visited the kids when we were in
- 36:22college and you know, keeping that going, uh, and the camaraderie of
- 36:25it. You know, we're all mountaineers. Man, we're mountaineers and we
- 36:30get together and you know, we we share the stories and we you know,
- 36:35we feel the love and it's just a it's a real it's a real
- 36:39treat. And yeah, the list, the list of of folks, I
- 36:44mean we're talking you know, the who's who of Mountaineer at athletics and Mountaineer
- 36:50football. And really some of these guys are are the you know, the
- 36:55crown Jewels. I mean you know you're talking about you know, the major
- 36:59Harry Susan and Jeff Hostetler's and of course Coach Neeland and mister past Along both
- 37:05attend uh. Coach Neeland has been our honorary chairman because he's the one that
- 37:08got us going way back when with the relationship of the children's hospital. But
- 37:14I mean, dude, we got like thirty five guys that are gonna be
- 37:19uh you know, Mike Fox, Aaron Beasley, Bull or Land of Avon,
- 37:22Cobur and Major Harris, Mike College, Quincy Wilson, Charlie Bowman,
- 37:25Willie Edwards, Brad and Hunt oh Schmidt, Jake Kels, there the Snakes,
- 37:30I mean, you know, Mike Vander Jack's coming. Uh So,
- 37:35just just some just some great, great time, good people and they all
- 37:38take they all take again. Uh, they all take time and and come
- 37:43and support this thing and and uh, you know makes me feel makes me
- 37:47feel pretty good that that. You know, I'm kind of that ring leader
- 37:51with this thing. And uh, you know, we all we all get
- 37:53together and you know, we're there, you know for a lot of reass
- 37:58we're raising money and awareness, you know for w Chovi's Hospital. That's that's
- 38:01what we're doing. And that's what this relationship is all about. Uh,
- 38:06seeing to it that you know, those kids get that everything they need to,
- 38:10you know, make it true whatever they're making it true, you know
- 38:14what I mean. Yeah, and these kids Joe's I mean, you guys
- 38:16are big, tough football players because you went on to play in the NFL.
- 38:19But these kids are are the real warriors, not somebody that carries a
- 38:22ball. With all due respectaball players, would you agree with that? Oh,
- 38:27you know that in the psychological realm of it all, that was one
- 38:31of the reasons why you know, Coach Sneelin would take us over there,
- 38:36not only to bring a smile to a kid's face, meet their family,
- 38:42uh you know, represent WZU. But I think I think really part of
- 38:47that motivation was, you know, you're you're you know, you're out there
- 38:52trying and moaning about a couple of sprints in the heat, and you know,
- 38:57little little Betsy's over there dealing with stage three leutinia and she's eight years
- 39:01old, so put this in some perspective. They're young men. So it
- 39:07helped keep us on the ground. Uh yeah, you're a you're a big
- 39:10time football player, but you know you better look around and know that that,
- 39:15uh, other people are are really the true warriors because a lot of
- 39:21them are in the battle for their life. Yeah exactly. You know,
- 39:25that's a realization that that I think is as a youngster, uh, you
- 39:30know, eighteen nineteen years old is very impactful. Yeah. Indeed, talking
- 39:36about with Brian Joe's, we act about that, Joe Joe's, No's,
- 39:38kids, golfing and everything that goes along with it later this weekend Morgantown,
- 39:43Joe's before we let you got one of the things that always amazes me,
- 39:45you know, in the world of college athletics, even going back to the
- 39:49days when when you play not everybody is a West Virginian per se. You
- 39:53know, you come here from you know, wherever, Florida, Pennsylvania,
- 39:57whatever, to play at at WVU. But there's something about West Virginia,
- 40:02the state I'm talking about, that just leaves a mark on people. And
- 40:06so they come to a WVU and they play sports, and they go on
- 40:10to pursue that the NFL, or are they in their careers and they go
- 40:15to the business world, or they move out of state. Even the ones
- 40:17that aren't native West Virginians, and the majority of the ones Joe's that you
- 40:22mentioned are not native West Virginias. They may have only been here three or
- 40:25four years, but it leaves a mark on the man, and they want
- 40:29to come and they want to give back. That's I can't. I can't
- 40:34say any better than that. You know, it's not that it even leaves
- 40:37it a mark on you. It gets into your soul. The mountains,
- 40:43the people that occupy this this state have a love and a passion for it,
- 40:49and those natives, you know, when you come. You know,
- 40:52I'm from Baltimore, and when I came over here, I was I was
- 40:55welcome into the I'm with you, the West Virginia family, and we're all
- 41:02over the place. I see that West Virginia logo all over the places I
- 41:07travel and drive around this this great country man, and honestly, goodness,
- 41:12Uh, it just gets into your soul. And uh yeah, I can't
- 41:19say any better than the way you just said. You know, you want
- 41:21to come back. I get to come back, you know, thirty three
- 41:24years now in a row for this golf tournament. And every time I come
- 41:30back, you know, when I when I hit that West Virginia line,
- 41:34I'm home. Yeah, it's wonderful. All right, Joe's we gotta go.
- 41:39I appreciate it, and we'll talk to you soon and I'll see you
- 41:42a Thursday and Friday in morgantime. Man, Thanks a lot. Absolutely,
- 41:45brother, Hey, we appreciate you. Travel safe and we'll see a Thursday.
- 41:49Than sounds good, Brian, Joe's react mountaineer legend and one of the
- 41:53all around nicest guys you will ever meet. I never got a chamber,
- 41:57of course. I remember Joe's got playing with the most Hawk and everything that
- 42:00they did all American, played for the Kansas City Chiefs as well. And
- 42:02I didn't get to meet Joe's in person till a couple of years ago.
- 42:06And you talk about a class act man, he is a class act and
- 42:07he's doing some great things with his organization. So again, in the annual
- 42:13Joe's Knows Kids Golf Classic, sponsored by Pepsi and Parmar Stores this Friday at
- 42:16lake View Resorted, Morgantown, things will get underway. There's a kickoff party
- 42:20Thursday night at Tropics followed by the golf tournament and lots of WVU legends.
- 42:24Man. I just I was blown away by it when I was there last
- 42:28year. Proceeds benefit WU Medicine and the Hoss Foundation. There's they got a
- 42:31really good Facebook page, Joe's Knows Kids, And if you know Joe's you
- 42:36can't expect it. To be spelled any other way. Joz n O z
- 42:39k I d Z. That's the Facebook page for more information, so go
- 42:44check it out. Speaking of WVU, not so much positivity out of Morgantown
- 42:51over the weekend with the situation with Coach Huggins. Jeff Jenkins from the Newsroom's
- 42:55going to join us to talk about it. Right after this from the Parmar

- 45:31the resignation or maybe not from wvuhead basketball coach Bob Huggins. Jef Jenkins from
- 45:37the newsroom joins the Jeff Good Morning. It seems all the Huggins controversies happened
- 45:42over the weekend. He was busted for DUI and Pittsburgh on a Friday night,
- 45:45then that resignation came that weekend, hours after the DUI. Now over
- 45:49this past weekend, he says he never resigned. What's up, That's what
- 45:52he says. I mean, that's what an attorney out of Cleveland has sent
- 45:57the university a letter and said, and you can read all these letters at
- 46:00our website ww Metronews dot com. UH university got a letter Friday that said
- 46:05that Bob Huggins didn't resign and UH that he voluntarily went to rehab and when
- 46:12he's done with rehab, he's ready to take back over his job, and
- 46:15that the university, didn't you know, didn't give him a chance for rehab,
- 46:20didn't discuss anything with him, just basically, uh said you have to
- 46:24you know, you have to resign and so but they said that the letter
- 46:30says that he didn't really resign, although WVU did provide a an email from
- 46:39his wife, June Huggins's account that says, I resign and retire basically um.
- 46:46And but they're saying that he did not resign. Their threatening to lawsuit
- 46:51if w doesn't reinstate. Now key here is wvuh answered all of that.
- 46:58So they just you know, the story didn't come out with just here's Huggins's
- 47:01letter and w's kind of back tracking box skate. They release their response at
- 47:06the same time, right, so you website, you get the letter release
- 47:10plus the ww response, which says this is revisionist history. Basically, uh,
- 47:15he did resign. Here's the conversation dot dot dot dot dot. And
- 47:22they also say, hey, we're frankly confused because his attorney bought fitz Simmons
- 47:28is talking to our attorney on Thursday saying, Okay, what are the benefits
- 47:32since the resignation. Let's settle this out. You know what are you know,
- 47:36what's the financial what's the final pay, what's the benefits? And then
- 47:39the next day we get this letter from another attorney saying you didn't resign,
- 47:43and you know, they say, you know, they say these the the
- 47:47uh, the letter does not represent the fox and they will go. It
- 47:52sounds like to me, toe to toe on this uh. And so now
- 47:58I would guess the next move would be in his court so to speak,
- 48:02um to you know, to see if they're going to file a lawsuit.
- 48:06Now, remember when you file lawsuits and think back to the Rich Rodriguez thing,
- 48:10all the depositions, all the things that came out in depositions. That
- 48:15opens you up to a lot of things. You have to go under oath
- 48:16give a deposition, and people get in trouble for lying there. So I
- 48:22mean, so we'll see, you know, we'll see where it goes.
- 48:25H what's the play here? Does he really that that's that's the question.
- 48:30Does he really want to coach? Is it financial? Is it? I
- 48:34mean, what is it? Yeah? It's uh, you know, and
- 48:39you know, just from social media reaction, it seems to me to be
- 48:46ninety percent or more that are criticizing Huggins for doing this. Yeah, and
- 48:52and and this is what I guess I don't understand, Jeff. It's just
- 48:55this is just it's embarrassing, uh, not only for the university, but
- 49:00for a true Mountaineer legend and one of the greatest college coaches of all time
- 49:04in Bob Huggins. I mean, he's better than this. And in my
- 49:07opinion, he and maybe, like you said, we don't know all the
- 49:09details, but he's better than this, Jeff, in my opinion, Well,
- 49:13it is uh, you know any um, you know, any different,
- 49:19any opportunity I think for you know, things to get healed up within
- 49:23the next couple of years. You know, I think that that makes it
- 49:28very uh minute that anything would happen. It would take a long time for
- 49:32this type of thing to heal. But we'll see. I mean the university,
- 49:36uh, you know, they they released all this information. You can
- 49:38read a point by point from their attorneys their answer, uh saying this,
- 49:44you know this is indeed now you know this might get down into contract law
- 49:46and all those things. But WVU feels obviously that is in a pretty strong
- 49:52position here. Um, you know, with the resignation in hand. All
- 49:57right, Well, again, you can read all the documentation the Jeff's referring
- 50:00to on the website ww metronews dot com. Joe Procado's got a great story
- 50:05up there. Plus, you know, may want to check out the podcast
- 50:07The Hobby and the Gays did yesterday before the game. Jeff, I appreciate
- 50:10it. Man. We'll be following the Straill today again. And Harvey Peyton's

- 50:50I got state treasuring candidate for Congress, Riley Moore and Metro new statewide correspondent
- 50:52Brad Michaelhaney on the show tomorrow as well. Interesting stuff by Brad posted on
- 50:57the website. Candidate finding deadlines were Friday for the second quarter. Brad and
- 51:01I will do a deep dive on that tomorrow as it pertains to racist for
- 51:05governor or secretary, state attorney general, so on and so forth, and
- 51:07that will be on the show tomorrow quickly. More people leaving the Democratic Party
- 51:13and a release from the state Republican Party. This morning, the county clerk
- 51:15in Marion County, Julie Kincaid, has switched from Democrat to Republican or Statements
- 51:21included wards like quote to the Republican Party and West Virginia represents the values to
- 51:24the people of the state, believe in devotion to God, patriotism, etc.
- 51:30And continuing quoting under the leadership of President Joe Biden, the Democratic Party
- 51:34no longer stands for those values and no longer have room for the vast majority
- 51:37of West Virginians in quotes. Now, I'm told that the sheriff and the
- 51:44county clerk in Logan County also recently switched their parties for the same reason.
- 51:50Get ready because more are coming all right tomorrow State Treasury and congressional candidate Riley
- 51:54Moore will be on the show tomorrow, and as I said, Brad mcahanny
- 51:57will be here as well. Dave will sent for Hobby coming up again.
- 52:00Harvey Peyton will be in as the legal counsel for this whole Huggin situation coming
