- PlayBetter: MGI's released their most advanced electric caddy yet, the new AI Navigator Halo. It does things no previous MGI cart does, including a follow-me feature and geofencing. But if you want everything that it can do, you're looking at $3,000. So is it worth it? Should you get one? Or is it overkill with an overinflated price tag? Our guy Daniel Fitzpatrick's been hands-on with the Halo for a few weeks now. And today he's sharing his experience and thoughts. This is Golf Tech Weekly, presented by PlayBetter. Reminder to everyone to please like, subscribe, comment. ⁓ we really do appreciate the feedback and support. Thank you all for watching and listening. And ⁓ don't forget to use code GTW at playbetter.com for the best pricing on qualified products. ⁓ all right, Daniel. ⁓ you've you've always been a carry bag guy. you never even used a a manual pushcart and and now you're jumping straight to the ⁓ to the Ferrari with a with a full blown Electric caddy. ⁓ what made you want to try one of these things? Yeah, so ⁓ yeah, like you said, I mean I've always been a guy who just threw the clubs on my back and and went and walked nine or eighteen ⁓ holes, even you know, all the way from when I was a junior golfer. So ⁓ yeah, I've just never been fond of using push carts. I think when I was growing up it was like only, you know, people with a physical limitation or the old guys at the course were were using ⁓ or something like that. ⁓ it just it just wasn't something that I I ever used. And it might have just been, you know, in the friendship group, the you know, you kind of got some slack if you were using one or something. Now you fast forward to today and every single kid has one because there's proven data that shows that you can shoot lower scores if you use one. So yeah, I was actually visiting HQ, ⁓ Play Better HQ in Baltimore and and we did an unboxing ⁓ video of of this MGI Halo. And I'd even played around a little bit with one at the at the ⁓ PGA show and was kind of like, okay, these things are getting pretty cool now. And you know, push comes to shove and I I had one showing up at my door to do some demo stuff with and make some videos and stuff. So I've I've been fortunate enough to ⁓ to use one now for right around twenty nine whole rounds of golf here at the golf course. So kind of excited to share the experience. There's a lot of pros, a few cons. ⁓ but kind of want to talk about how I've changed from probably never using one to never wanting to go without using one now. So love it. Love that. Well before we get into kind of what it's like on the course, why don't you tell us a little bit about the kind of the setup experience, ⁓ the the unboxing, the the assembly, ⁓ and I'm curious to hear the the folding and unfolding process because I think on some of these cards that can be a bit cumbersome. Curious about your experience with that. Yeah, so unboxing it was pretty pleasant. Their packaging is really impressive. Everything's really protected inside. So ⁓ the one thing I will say it was a little bit hidden where some of the power cables and stuff were, but that was just for good reason so stuff wasn't shaking around in the box and stuff like that. ⁓ you know, it didn't take much assembly at all, honestly. ⁓ the only thing that that I had to do is really click the wheels in, the back rear wheels. And then you push or you pull one little lever and it pulls right into shape. So if you ever use like a click gear or similar like manual push cart where you kind of push one button and fold it and then the wheels separate and it and it's ready to go. Right. That's basically the process of of getting this thing out and ready to go for golf. ⁓ it is much heavier because the battery that's in it is heavy. I will admit it is a heavy push cart. ⁓ but that's for good reason. It gives a good low center of gravity so it doesn't tip over easy. So really you you pull it out of your trunk, you pop a button, flip it out, and then you you slide out the anti tip wheel and put on your golf bag and you're ready to go. So I mean it's it's like less than thirty seconds to get it fired up and ready to go. So I I was pretty impressed with the assembly process and even just going to play around a golf. I it literally takes me thirty to forty seconds. ⁓ to to get going in the morning. So I I really appreciate how simplified they've made that process. And that battery is removable, right? So you talk about the weight, a good amount of that weight is going to be in that in that battery, ⁓ which of course is rechargeable. But if I'm not mistaken, you can remove that from the chassis. So like if you're lifting it in and out of your trunk, you can pull that battery out to to make it a little bit lighter on yourself. Yeah, totally. And actually that's how you charge it. You pop the battery out of its out of its actual holder and and you charge it. ⁓ So that that it definitely is user removable. ⁓ I guess if you maybe wanted to get a second battery if you're if you're crazy going more than thirty six holes in a day or something. but yeah, no, it it it's definitely removable and I have done that. I've taken the battery out because I store it on my in my four seasons porch here so that way ⁓ it's out of the weather. So to carry it up and down some stairs, I I pull the battery out just to make it a little easier to maneuver. So Yeah. Well, let's get to the good stuff. Let's jump on the course. ⁓ Tell us ⁓ tell us what it's like to actually use an electric caddy, then we'll get into kind of some of the specific features that make this one special. But but what's it like? I mean, it's pretty looks pretty luxurious to me. Yeah, it's definitely luxurious. It definitely turns some heads. ⁓ you know, especially the first couple of days I was using it. Not only the the staff at the club, but even just some of the other members playing were kind of just like, What what is the how is this go? How is this push card out in front of him so far, you know? it definitely takes some getting used to. ⁓ the first couple of rounds definitely had slower pace of play because I was getting use of where to position it before I go to the next, you know, I was I was so used to just carrying my bag up to the green, carrying it to the next hole. ⁓ but just getting used to driving the cart with the remote, using even the Halo follow me feature, just kind of getting used to honestly the all the features because there's a ton of features in the damn thing. ⁓ but it it really is ⁓ a learning experience. But I would say after like three to four rounds, like I feel like I'm a pro at using it. Like I I sometimes don't even take the remote out of my pocket and I'm driving this thing around like a remote control car. So it it is pretty cool. and it it it actually has become really an aid to playing the round of golf because now I can grab my putter, I can drive it over next to the next T box, I can, you know, position it somewhere to where it's not in the way. ⁓ It it definitely saves me energy when I'm playing rounds of golf. Like I get done with golf and I'm I'm fresher. I don't feel like I've ⁓ maybe maybe not a good thing. I I don't feel like I've done as good of a workout when I've done when I'm done. But at the same time, like it doesn't completely wear me out to where that's the only thing I can do for that day. So ⁓ overall the experience has just been mind boggling to me about how much fun it is to use it, but also how beneficial it's been to use it too. So it feels like ⁓ it feels like playing with a caddy, really really, right? I mean you're Yeah, it does and and it kinda is like a caddy 'cause it does I mean it has a built in GPS too. So like using that on board is really useful just to be able to glance at that, see yardages. It'll track your distances, your stats. I've I've recently learned that they even sell range finders. You can pair range finders to it to get the pin data on there. So it's like It it just it's so it's it really is like a smart AI like caddy, like you said. I mean it literally is with you at all the way around the golf course and and it's nice to have those features and and just kind of play golf and not worry about ⁓ you know the technology holding you back. Yeah. So let's talk about some of the the features that make this one ⁓ unique. ⁓ of course MGI has has a line of electric caddies. ⁓ one of them was the ⁓ was was a ⁓ GPS ⁓ model that has that ⁓ that built-in screen on the console just like this this new model does. but this one does some things that previous versions didn't. ⁓ And I I guess it's important to kind of note what this product is. It sells initially for $2,600. but then if you want to add the ⁓ what they call the halo which is the the attachment that makes it ⁓ that gives you that follow me. feature if I'm not mistaken, ⁓ that's another $400. So that brings that total price to to $3,000 retail. ⁓ Daniel, what is the what is using the Halo like? What's what's it like to install the thing? ⁓ and talk a little bit about kind of the follow me feature, ⁓ how it works versus controlling it with the remote control. And do you ever use it as kind of a hybrid operation of those between those two? Sure. So the Halo feature is actually what kind of is the breakthrough in my opinion with with this attachment and and with this cart. ⁓ it works hand in hand with the GPS. So it's actually just ⁓ an arm bar that that slides onto the cart. It's a threaded ⁓ quick bolt in, so it takes just a few seconds to put it on. ⁓ and then it it connects via USB C right underneath of the GPS module. So right at the handlebars basically. And it has ⁓ I believe it's like a radar or LIDAR scanner of some kind ⁓ that basically has an eye that points forward for the cart. So when I say it works hand in hand with the GPS, it actually does. So it you take the remote, you stand in front of the push cart, there's a button that has a person on it, you sk it's you push the button and it scans your body. And then you can as soon as you get a blue light on the remote, you can just start walking and it follows you. And it'll always stay eight feet behind you at all times. Now, how it works with the GPS is if you get too close to the green, too close to a hazard or a water ⁓ hazard or a or a bunker, it stops. So it's not gonna drive into anything that's gonna ruin the push card. It's not driving somewhere where it's not supposed to be. and then it gives you a vibrating pulse in the remote so that way you don't get 40 yards, 50 yards ahead of it, look and thinking, ⁓ where the heck is this? Now crap, now I gotta walk. Back and get it. It it it is very smart in the fact that if it if it finds trouble or it's not able to do something, it it alerts you on the remote. ⁓ I definitely use it in a hybrid way though, just for the fact of a few features or for a few reasons. it always stays eight feet behind you, like I said. So when you get up to your golf ball, you look back and like, okay, now I gotta walk back and get my range finder, walk up to my ball, shoot the distance. Walk back to the cart, get my club, walk up, hit the so usually when I'm fifteen, twenty feet away from the ball, I'll grab the remote and drive it up next to my ball. I'll stop it there, hit my shot, do my, you know, rangefinder, hit my shot, grab my next club. Hopefully it's my putter when I'm going to the green, and then have it just follow me to the green. ⁓ there's even times where when I get close to the green, I might use the remote and drive it around to a certain side of the green while I'm, you know, sitting there reading my putt or something like that. Again. That took time to do because I wasn't that good at driving it first off. And now I've I've gotten pretty good at driving it even when I'm not right next to it. So yeah, I definitely use it in a hybrid way. I I would say when it comes down to it, I probably use the remote more than I use the follow me feature. But it is nice to have that geo fencing. If you want to go remoteless, you can just walk and it'll follow you like a normal caddy would. Yeah. Yeah, the geofencing is really, really a big, big point of differentiation from MGI's other carts and and other competing electric caddies. ⁓ pretty slick technology. ⁓ you know, to think that it's all pre mapped out and so the cart knows not to not to follow you into the bunker and not even to follow you onto the green, you know, ⁓ much less a water hazard. You're playing down there in the middle of the ocean. ⁓ there's water all around you. salt water at that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So ⁓ pretty awesome. ⁓ it's also got a ⁓ a point-to-point feature I know where you can you can kind of ⁓ using the touch screen on the on the console, you can you can select a point. Maybe you want to drive it over to your next T box, you can just simply touch the the the point on the map where you want it to go and send it on its way. ⁓ so just a lot of advanced technology. With that built-in screen, Daniel, did you find yourself using that? Like I know you're a guy that's had an opportunity to test a lot of different range finders, different golf watches, different handheld GPSs. when you when you have this cart, were you were you relying on the screen for your yardages and your information, or did you find yourself going back to your same old kind of systems that you're accustomed to using? Yeah, when I'm when I'm walking I usually use that as my GPS. ⁓ now I will not lie, I fire up my arcos just so I get all my all my strokes gain stats and stuff going at the same time, but I don't have to have my phone on. So I I literally just keep my phone turned off and that saves phone battery, which is nice. ⁓ but yeah, I actually like using the GPS just because of how convenient it is. It's always right there. It switches the holes automatically for me. ⁓ I I like using the the GPS right there on board. It's on anyway, so I I kinda just think why why not use it? I did test it alongside like my Garmin watch and I have tested it alongside just like a phone GPS app like Arcos just to test the accuracy of it. It's exactly the same. So I I don't see any differences or reasons to do multiple at once. ⁓ so yeah, I I find it very useful just because it's it's right there and ⁓ It's also cool too. Like if you're playing a golf course and you see something wrong on the GPS, you can report it and then they'll update their maps and stuff too, which is nice. So ⁓ you like the remote control functionality, you like the onboard screen. I guess that begs the question, is it worth adding that halo attachment? ⁓ do you do you get enough out of that follow me feature to to do you think to make to justify the four hundred dollar cost? Any thoughts on that? I think I w I do like it and that's the f I'm not not I think I like it. I do like it because like we've talked about like some of these other push carts, it has to have a Bluetooth connection to the remote and it just kind of follows you that way. But the way that it interacts with the GPS is like no other one. So ⁓ I think I would definitely add it just for the fact that it's so simple to use and it's actually cool. Like even when I leave my house in the morning and I'm walking 'cause I I live, you know, like six houses down from the pro shop. ⁓ so like I put it together, I go down to the street, I turn it on, and it follows me down the road, ⁓ all the way to the golf course. And there's even people that'll be out walking their dogs and it's like a head turner even with that too. They're like, ⁓ it's like a robot, you know? So it's ⁓ it's not just for like a cool feature. Like I actually find it useful. Like I don't have to worry about if I if I need to look at my email or ⁓ get my arcos fired up while I'm walking to the course in the morning or if I'm drinking my energy drink or something. I'm not like Trying to drive it between all the cars and s and stuff like that. It's literally just following me there. ⁓ and it's the same way on the golf course. Like if I want to just take a specific route or like if if I don't know where my ball went, 'cause sometimes I just don't see it, I can walk around and look for it and it just kind of follows me around like a puppy dog. So I find I find some nice uses to to have it there and not have to be dedicated to like driving it everywhere I go, which is nice. Yeah. Definitely attracts some attention, huh? I mean it's ⁓ that thing's a head turner. Yeah. It it a hundred percent is. and and people are always, you know, thinking like, ⁓ that's not necessarily why would you buy that? You know, is it really hard to push your own cart? No, it's not that hard to push your own cart on our golf course, but golf courses with terrain, golf courses, people that may have a physical limitation, a hundred percent this can certainly help them. I mean, I there there's a there's a feature on there too called the power assist and It's basically the button that's on the handlebars and you can basically push it and still steer the cart. So it'll it'll drive, but then you can steer the cart. So it's great for when you're around the T boxes in tight situations. You're driving ⁓ from hole to hole, maybe on a cart path that has a bunch of curves on it. I've found myself even playing an entire hole just using the power assist because I can set the speed a little faster than I normally walk and then it makes me walk a little faster too. So ⁓ it doesn't have to be something where you drive by the remote. You can use it like a standard push cart without actually having to push it too. So it's like it it's kind of crazy how many ways you can use it, whether it's in follow me or the remote or or that powered assist. Like it it's kind of cool. You can you can choose how you wanna use it when you're playing around to golf, I think. Yeah. I think another cool thing about those MGI carts is is those rear wheels are operated on independent motors. And so it's awesome for like side hills because instead of it like a some carts, if you get ⁓ on the side hill, ⁓ they'll start veering, of course, you know, naturally. Whereas this one, like one motor will slow down and the other will speed up so that it maintains a straight line, even if it's going on a side hill, which is ⁓ pretty pretty awesome ⁓ as well. So ⁓ What about the overall build quality of the thing? Are are you impressed with that? Or does it feel cheaply made or solidly made or no? Definitely not cheaply made. I I love the build quality of it, honestly. ⁓ like we were talking about, it's a heavier push cart, but I like that. ⁓ because I I don't think it's gonna tip over ever on me. The only time it has once tipped over on me was my own fault. I didn't put the anti-tip wheel out and I went I went up a T-box and and it spilled and my clubs went over. That was my own fault. ⁓ so it it's very well designed. The the pieces of it are are very, very well built. ⁓ the one thing I wish it was that it doesn't have is a full waterproof rating. So when I was done, I wish I could hose it off, which I can't. ⁓ so I actually take the wheels off and I kind of hose them off and and dry ⁓ off. But because of the way the battery is, it's not something that's fully waterproof. ⁓ which I wish it was, just for the fact that I wish I could wash it down because I since I do walk in the morning, it gets a lot of grass stuck on it. ⁓ But overall, build quality wise, it's it's pretty damn impressive, honestly. Overall, it's very rugged, very durable. I I know this like yeah, it's expensive, but the way it's built, you know that you're gonna get a lot of rounds of golf out of it. Yeah, yeah. ⁓ other than the the waterproof rating or lack thereof, ⁓ any other cons that come to mind, things that you wish were different or improved? Yeah, I I would hope that they could make an update in the in the f in the firmware of the software with the follow me feature like I was talking about, where like if I stop moving and there's nothing geofence around me that it would just pull the cart right up next to me. ⁓ I think that would be a cool ⁓ type of an upgrade so that way I don't have to manually get by my, you know, it would just really perfect the follow me mode, I think. But in reality, like there's not a ton of cons to it. ⁓ it is very sensitive in the follow me mode with with hazards and bunkers, but I don't know if that's really a con. Like I'd rather be more sensitive than, you know, drive into a pond and be ruined forever. Yeah. so that that would really be the thing. I mean, for me, like it's a little bit harder to store at times just because I, you know, in QS we have small living quarters. So ⁓ in reality it's the same size as every other push cart. Honestly, when you fold it up, it goes into a standard trunk of a car. So ⁓ I just like to store it indoors because it's, you know, a nice piece of technology. I don't I don't want it to get stolen or something like that. So ⁓ very few cons, honestly. I I think overall it's a huge asset to me playing golf and walking golf. ⁓ I actually almost returned the new golf bag I bought because I didn't look at how heavy it was gonna be when I was carrying it. And lucky enough for me, this showed up on my doorstep for testing not long after I got my golf bag and saved me from from returning the golf bag. So ⁓ how was that? How was that by the way? Does your ⁓ the the bag that you bought, is it a is it a carry bag, is it a hybrid bag, is ⁓ is that it's not a cart bag, right? No, it's it's a hybrid bag. So it's a fourteen way large stand golf bag. ⁓ that is maybe one con I would say they could probably ⁓ fix in their in their design actually, is it doesn't quite sit perfectly in the s in the saddle, basically. ⁓ It is definitely secure. I'm not worried about ⁓ falling out or anything. But at times if it goes over a lot of rough terrain, my bag seems to kind of twist and not sit straight up and down. And it's just because of the top V, they're adjustable, but they don't spread out or go closer. If these were adjustable in or out, I think that it would be perfect. ⁓ that's nitpicky. I understand that. But I think that if you have a standard carry ⁓ standard ⁓ carry bag or a or a standard cart bag, it'll fit fine. But the hybrid bags, I think, because of the stand on them and the way they're positioned, it just doesn't fit perfectly. It's just an awkward size bag at the end of the day. Yeah. Yeah. Probably designed for a cart bag. And probably if you were I mean, you tell me, if you were going to use this as your as your daily driver for forever and ever, would you probably invest in a cart bag? Would that be the most natural pairing with this thing. Yeah, if I knew I was gonna have this and not be carrying my bag hardly ever, I I wouldn't have gotten a hybrid bag anyway. I I would have got either a full blown ⁓ like cart bag like you said. ⁓ I I probably would have went that route because I I mainly ride in a cart anyway. I just went with the hybrid route because I wanted the ability to still walk and have a stand, honestly. And like I said, I don't need that anymore. So I mean That that's literally why I thought I was gonna return it's because it was so heavy. And then yeah, I I got this this automatic push cart. Now it's like, okay, this is perfect. Yeah. So Daniel, big question here. Would you buy this with your own money? Yeah, I've I've contemplated this a lot. ⁓ for me personally, if if I was walking ninety percent of the rounds of golf that I play. I would one thousand percent buy this with my own money. ⁓ it definitely is an aid to playing golf. It makes playing golf, walking playing golf a a true pleasure. Like you don't even think about, you know, wasting energy carrying your bag or pushing your bag around or anything like that. The features it comes with with the GPS and everything like that. There's no subscription to it, by the way. We didn't mention that, but e there is GPS on it and stuff. There's no type of subscription with it, which is nice. Great point. ⁓ But yes, I I totally would. Now, if I was a person who like maybe I only walk once every couple of rounds or maybe like, you know, not at least seventy five percent of the golf I play, I probably wouldn't buy it. ⁓ but for me, I I still would buy it. I mean, I do a d majority of my golf is walking, and even though our golf course is very flat, it's it's awesome. I like you said, I never had a push cart and I've I've gone from From zero to a hundred in a in a lightning flash. So like I sit there and think like, ⁓ I don't think I want to push my bag around, you know. And that that's probably just, you know, being elitist at the end of the day because I I we we have access to this stuff, right? You know, so ⁓ I I totally would buy it if if I was a majority walking player, that's for sure. Or if I just, you know, if I like nice things and I have the money to spend and I walk golf every once in a while, why wouldn't you? Yeah. It it makes everything enjoyable. Yeah. I think too, I mean, you're still a young guy. put a few years on you and there's that much more reason why you might be interested in something like this, right? I mean, you you still maybe want to enjoy the exercise of walking the golf course, but pushing or carrying maybe becomes that much more of a of a problem for your lower back or whatever the case may be. And so this introduces it becomes really be at that point beyond a luxury and really like a sound investment. It it's almost as if you're investing and in giving yourself the opportunity to to still enjoy walking and and getting that exercise. ⁓ and so at that point, maybe three thousand dollars if you're going to be using it enough, doesn't sound like such an unreasonable price. Is that ⁓ certainly and yeah, I mean there there's quite a few senior golfers that walk nine holes in the morning here where I play and they've seen it and they've already been considering getting one just ⁓ for the fact like I like I said, usually when I when I'm driving it, if I don't have the halo on, like it'll go I think like up to 150 yards in front of you and still be remote controlled. And so like they'll see me have that thing shoot off the T box and then I'm almost like chasing it. And it actually cause does kind of make you walk faster. And a few of them have played with me while I use it and they're like, wow, like my heart rate got up faster because they'll they'll have a smartwatch and they're like, ⁓ I kind of like this. Like it makes me walk faster. And there's just like little hidden benefits that you may not think of that it can it can help maybe make it more of a a better walking workout and still not stress the body so much. Yeah. Yeah. Super cool. ⁓ well one more question. I did want to ask you about that halo attachment. Forgot to ask you, is that something that cause I hadn't seen anything on this? Do you have to take that thing off to fold the cart down? Where do you put it? What's what is that like? Yeah, a thousand percent. So very, very good question. ⁓ you 100% have to remove it to fold the device up. Now the other attachments, the phone clip, the umbrella mount, the drink holder, those all come with it too. Those can stay on. So you literally only have to take the halo off. If you don't, you'll snap the USB C cord and you'll have to basically thread a new USB C cord through it or get a replacement and thread it through. So it's not catastrophic if you do accidentally fold it up, but you cannot fold it up with that. Now, it does come with a nice drawstring soft sided bag to store it in. So if you have a big pouch in your golf bag, I have a big pouch on the side of my golf bag. So when I fold it up, I just slide it in the side of my golf bag and I know it's protected and it's there. ⁓ but yes, you you one hundred percent have to take that off when you fold it up. Again, the only attachment that you do have to take off, but it's probably a good thing 'cause when you're moving the cart around, you might bang it into something and damage it anyway. So it's it's probably for more reason than just breaking the cord too. Yeah. Wow. Well keep enjoying that thing. ⁓ you gonna play ⁓ you gonna play today or sometime soon? Get out and Yeah, so I I played this morning. used it this morning. I'll I'll play tomorrow. Usually Thursday, Friday, Sundays are my walking days to to get some golf in. So ⁓ Yeah, I I look forward to using it every single time. It honestly is is it's fun. I think it's fun just to drive it around sometimes. You'll catch me sometimes even just using the remote to do circles with it in the in the middle of the fairway. I'm such a kid sometimes, but it's ⁓ it's fun just to drive it around. Yeah. Is it ⁓ Daniel, of all these these different products you've got to play with, ⁓ is it is it one of if if if not the most like ⁓ fun or interesting or engaging or or or just kind of ⁓ enjoyable of of the tech products that you've had a chance to test? It's definitely one of the most unique and fun. I was a kid when I grew up who always liked like remote control cars and airplanes and stuff like that. So like I like I said, I find myself kind of being a kid with it once in a while. And like I'll be walking down the fairway and I'll zoom in over to the side and make it go over hills. And I I'm you know, I I just mess around sometimes. You get bored out there, but it's it's fun. Honestly, it's it's really cool. He's easily one of the coolest products I've been fortunate enough to to do some testing with. Awesome.
