Speaker 1: Chapter thirty two, in which Pinocchio's ears become like those
• 0:07
Speaker 1: of a donkey. In a little while he changes into
• 0:12
Speaker 1: a real donkey and begins to bray. Every One, at
• 0:19
Speaker 1: one time or another, has found some surprise awaiting him
• 0:25
Speaker 1: of the kind which Pinocchio had on that eventful morning
• 0:29
Speaker 1: of his life. There are but few w what was it? Well,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: I will tell you, my dear little listeners. On awakening,
• 0:40
Speaker 1: Pinocchio put his hand up to his head, and there
• 0:44
Speaker 1: he found guess. He found that during the night his
• 0:50
Speaker 1: ears had grown at least ten full inches. You must
• 0:57
Speaker 1: know that Pinocchio, even from his birth, had very small ears,
• 1:04
Speaker 1: so small indeed, that to the naked eye they could
• 1:07
Speaker 1: hardly be seen. Fancy how he felt when he noticed
• 1:12
Speaker 1: that overnight those two dainty organs had become as long
• 1:17
Speaker 1: as shoe brushes. He went in search of a mirror,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: but not finding any, he just filled a basin with
• 1:26
Speaker 1: water and looked at himself. And there he saw what
• 1:31
Speaker 1: he never could have wished to see. His manly figure
• 1:35
Speaker 1: was adorned and enriched by a beautiful pair of donkey's ears.
• 1:42
Speaker 1: I leave you to think of the terrible grief, the shame,
• 1:46
Speaker 1: the despair of the poor marionette. He began to cry,
• 1:53
Speaker 1: to scream, to knock his head against the wall. But
• 1:57
Speaker 1: the more he shrieked, the longer, and the more Hairy
• 2:01
Speaker 1: grew his ears at those piercing shrieks. A dormouse came
• 2:07
Speaker 1: into the room, a fat, little dormouse who lived upstairs.
• 2:12
Speaker 1: Seeing Pinocchio so grief stricken, she asked him anxiously, what
• 2:19
Speaker 1: is the matter, dear little neighbor. I am sick, my
• 2:24
Speaker 1: little dormouse, very very sick, and from an illness which
• 2:29
Speaker 1: frightens me. Do you understand how to feel the pulse?
• 2:35
Speaker 1: A little? Feel mine? Then, and tell me if I
• 2:39
Speaker 1: have a fever. The dormouse took Pinocchio's wrist between her paws,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: and after a few minutes, looked up at him sorrowfully
• 2:53
Speaker 1: and said, my friend, I am sorry, but I must
• 2:58
Speaker 1: give you some very sad news. What is it? You
• 3:06
Speaker 1: have a very bad fever. But what fever? Is it?
• 3:15
Speaker 1: The donkey fever? I don't know anything about that fever,
• 3:20
Speaker 1: answered Pinocchio, beginning to understand even too well what was
• 3:25
Speaker 1: happening to him. Well, then I'll tell you all about it,
• 3:29
Speaker 1: said the dormouse, know then that within two or three
• 3:35
Speaker 1: hours you will no longer be a marionette, nor a boy,
• 3:42
Speaker 1: or what shall I be? Within two or three hours
• 3:47
Speaker 1: you will become like a real donkey, just like the
• 3:51
Speaker 1: ones that pull the fruit carts to market. What have
• 3:55
Speaker 1: I done? What have I done? Cried Pinocchio, grasping his
• 4:00
Speaker 1: long ears in his hands and pulling and tugging at
• 4:04
Speaker 1: them angrily, just as if they belonged to another. My
• 4:10
Speaker 1: dear boy, answered the dormouse, to cheer him up a bit. Oh,
• 4:14
Speaker 1: why worry now? What is done cannot be undone. You know,
• 4:19
Speaker 1: Fate has decreed that all lazy boys who come to
• 4:22
Speaker 1: hate books and schools and teachers spend all their days
• 4:26
Speaker 1: with toys and games much sooner or later turn into donkeys.
• 4:34
Speaker 1: But is it really so, asked Pinocchio, sobbing bitterly. I'm
• 4:40
Speaker 1: sorry to say it is, and tears are now useless.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: You should have thought of this long before. But the
• 4:50
Speaker 1: fault is not mine, believe me, little dormouse. The fault
• 4:55
Speaker 1: is all lamp Wicks. Who is this lamp Wick? He's
• 5:00
Speaker 1: a classmate of mine. I wanted to return home, I
• 5:05
Speaker 1: wanted to be obedient. I wanted to study and to
• 5:08
Speaker 1: succeed in school. But lamp Wick said to me, why
• 5:12
Speaker 1: do you waste your time studying? Why do you want
• 5:15
Speaker 1: to go to school? Come with me to the land
• 5:18
Speaker 1: of toys. There will never study again. There we can
• 5:22
Speaker 1: enjoy ourselves and be happy from morn till night. And
• 5:28
Speaker 1: why did you follow the advice of that false friend.
• 5:32
Speaker 1: Why because my dear little must dormouse. I I am
• 5:37
Speaker 1: a heedless marionette, heedless and heartless. Oh, if I only
• 5:41
Speaker 1: had a bit of heart, I should never have abandoned
• 5:44
Speaker 1: that good fairy who loved me so well, and who
• 5:48
Speaker 1: has been so kind to me. And by this time
• 5:53
  Speaker 1: I I should no longer be a marionette. I should
• 5:56
Speaker 1: be a real boy, like all these friends of mine. Oh,
• 6:03
Speaker 1: if I meet lamp Wick, I am going to tell
• 6:06
Speaker 1: him what I think of him, and more too. After
• 6:10
Speaker 1: this long speech, Pinocchio walked to the door of the room,
• 6:15
Speaker 1: but when he reached it, remembering his donkey ears, he
• 6:20
Speaker 1: felt ashamed to show them in public and turned back.
• 6:25
Speaker 1: He took a large cotton bag from a shelf, put
• 6:29
Speaker 1: it on his head, and pulled it far down to
• 6:33
Speaker 1: his very nose, and thus adorned he went out. He
• 6:38
Speaker 1: looked for lamp Wick everywhere along the streets, in the squares,
• 6:44
Speaker 1: inside the theaters, everywhere, but he was not to be found.
• 6:50
Speaker 1: He asked everyone who he met, but no one had
• 6:54
Speaker 1: seen him. In desperation, he returned home and knocked at
• 6:59
Speaker 1: the door. Who is it, asked lamp Wick. From within,
• 7:05
Speaker 1: it is, I answered Pinocchio. Wait a minute. After a
• 7:12
Speaker 1: full half hour, the door opened. Another surprise awaited Pinocchio.
• 7:21
Speaker 1: There in the room stood his friend, with a large
• 7:25
Speaker 1: cotton bag on his head, pulled down to his very nose.
• 7:31
Speaker 1: At the sight of that bag, Pinocchio felt slightly happier
• 7:36
Speaker 1: and thought to himself, my friend must be suffering from
• 7:41
Speaker 1: the same sickness that I am. I wonder if he
• 7:45
Speaker 1: too has donkey fever. But, pretending he had seen nothing,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: he asked with a smile, Oh, how are you, my
• 7:54
Speaker 1: dear lamp Wick? Very well? Like a mouse in a
• 7:59
Speaker 1: parmesan chees? Is that really true? Why should I lie
• 8:05
Speaker 1: to you? Well? I beg your pardon, my friend, But
• 8:10
Speaker 1: why any of you wearing that cotton bag over your ears? Uh?
• 8:15
Speaker 1: The doctor has ordered it because one of my knees hurts,
• 8:20
Speaker 1: and you, dear Pinocchio, why are you wearing that cotton
• 8:26
Speaker 1: bag down on your nose? The doctor has ordered it
• 8:31
Speaker 1: because I have a bruised foot. Oh my, poor Pinocchio,
• 8:38
Speaker 1: Oh my, poor lamp Wick. An embarrassingly long silence followed
• 8:47
Speaker 1: these words, during which time the two friends looked at
• 8:52
Speaker 1: each other in a mocking way. Finally, Pinocchio, in a
• 8:58
Speaker 1: voice sweet as honey and soft as a flute, said
• 9:03
Speaker 1: to his companion, tell me, lamp Wick, dear friend, have
• 9:11
Speaker 1: you ever suffered from an earache? Never? And you never? Still?
• 9:24
Speaker 1: Since this morning, my ear has been torturing me. So
• 9:30
Speaker 1: is mine yours too? Which year? Is it? Both of them?
• 9:37
Speaker 1: And yours? Both of them too? I wonder if it
• 9:42
Speaker 1: could be the same sickness. I'm afraid it is. Will
• 9:49
Speaker 1: you do me a favor, lamp Wick, gladly with my
• 9:53
Speaker 1: whole heart? Will you let me see your ears? Why not? Ah?
• 9:59
Speaker 1: But before I show you mine, I want to see yours,
• 10:04
Speaker 1: Dear Pinocchio. No, you must show yours first. Oh no,
• 10:11
Speaker 1: my dear, yours first? Then mine? Well, then, said Pinocchio,
• 10:19
Speaker 1: let us make a contract. Well, let's hear the contract.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: Let us take off our caps together, all right, all right, ready.
• 10:33
Speaker 1: Then Pinocchio began to count one, two, three, and at
• 10:40
Speaker 1: the word three, the two boys pulled off their caps
• 10:45
Speaker 1: and threw them high in the air. And then a
• 10:50
Speaker 1: scene took place which is hard to believe, but it
• 10:53
Speaker 1: is all too true. Pinocchio and his friend lamp Wick,
• 11:00
Speaker 1: when they saw each other, both stricken by the same misfortune,
• 11:05
Speaker 1: instead of feeling sorrowful and ashamed, began to poke fun
• 11:10
Speaker 1: at each other, and after much nonsense, they ended by
• 11:15
Speaker 1: bursting out into hearty laughter. They laughed and laughed, and
• 11:19
Speaker 1: laughed and laughed again, and laughed until they ached, laughed
• 11:23
Speaker 1: until they cried. But all of a sudden, lamp Wick
• 11:29
Speaker 1: stopped laughing. He tottered and almost fell pale as a ghost.
• 11:35
Speaker 1: He turned to Pinocchio and said, help, help Pinocchio. What's
• 11:39
Speaker 1: the matter? Oh help me? Ah, I can't stand up.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: I can't either, cried Pinocchio, and his laughter turned to
• 11:47
Speaker 1: tears as he stumbled about helplessly. They had hardly finished
• 11:52
Speaker 1: speaking when both of them fell on all fours and
• 11:56
Speaker 1: began running and jumping around the room. And as they ran,
• 11:59
Speaker 1: their arms turned into legs, their faces lengthened into snouts,
• 12:05
Speaker 1: and their backs became covered with long gray hairs. This
• 12:12
Speaker 1: was humiliation enough, but the most horrible moment was the
• 12:17
Speaker 1: one in which the two poor creatures felt their tails appear.
• 12:24
Speaker 1: Overcome with shame and grief, they tried to cry and
• 12:28
Speaker 1: bemoan their fate. But what is done can't be undone.
• 12:35
Speaker 1: Instead of moans and cries, they burst forth into loud
• 12:41
Speaker 1: donkey brays, which sounded very much like e aw e
• 12:45
Speaker 1: aw eat aw. And at that moment a loud knocking
• 12:51
Speaker 1: was heard at the door, and a voice called to them, apin,
• 12:57
Speaker 1: I am the little man, the driver of the wagon
• 13:02
Speaker 1: which brought you here. Open, I say, or beware. End
• 13:12
Speaker 1: of Chapter thirty two.
