- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Well done, you've made it to the
- 0:16end of another week. It's Friday the 21st of
- 0:18February, and here we are ready to put down the Old Testament
- 0:23narrative that we have been working our way through this
- 0:26week and to come sit down at the foot of the wise one who is
- 0:31going to teach us more about the way to live.
- 0:34Yes, we are going to read another series of Proverbs.
- 0:38Are you enjoying the proverbs so far?
- 0:39No, this is just week 3 and we're just getting started.
- 0:42But they're so cool, aren't they?
- 0:44It's it's so unlike anything that we read in today's culture
- 0:49where we are able to sit down and hear this unfettered wisdom
- 0:53from the wise one. Yeah, we get to put down our
- 0:57cynicism for a moment and just take some good advice, not
- 1:01bankable guarantees, but advice about the way the world tends to
- 1:06be. Yes.
- 1:08If if you want something amusing, you can do a little
- 1:11Google search for promises from the Proverbs or God's guarantees
- 1:16in the Proverbs. Not true.
- 1:18Not true. These are observations about the
- 1:20way the world is, and so we are going to hear these observations
- 1:24and learn a bit more of God's wisdom for our lives.
- 1:28So you ready, friends? Excellent.
- 1:30Me too. Let us read together Proverbs
- 1:33chapter 1013 to 18. Wise words come from the lips of
- 1:48people with understanding, but those lacking sense will be
- 1:53beaten with a rod. Wise people treasure knowledge,
- 2:00but the babbling of a fool invites disaster.
- 2:05The wealth of the rich is their fortress, the poverty of the
- 2:11poor is their destruction. The earnings of the godly
- 2:17enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on
- 2:22sin. People who accept discipline are
- 2:28on the pathway to life, but those who ignore correction will
- 2:33go astray. Hiding hatred makes you a liar.
- 2:39Slandering others makes you a fool.
- 2:54Oh, Jesus, it's so interesting as we reflect on these proverbs
- 2:58and your wisdom for our life and this proverb that says the
- 3:03earnings of the godly will enhance their lives, but evil
- 3:07people squander their money on sin.
- 3:10So often the world has its magnifying glass, its focus on
- 3:16our earnings and our money and the things that we achieve.
- 3:22But here in this Proverbs, you teach us that it's our heart,
- 3:29it's our approach to life, it's our posture of worship that
- 3:34dictates what happens with the things that we have.
- 3:39Ah, so Jesus, I pray that you would shift our focus away from
- 3:43achievement and earning and possessions to our character.
- 3:48Because no matter what we have, what we possess, our character
- 3:54defines what good that will do in our lives or how easily we
- 3:58will lose it. So continue your slow, good work
- 4:02of transformation in us. We just surrender ourselves to
- 4:06you, Jesus, and pray that through your Spirit you continue
- 4:10to build our character to be men and women, boys and girls of
- 4:16your Kingdom so that as we live, we live in a way that brings
- 4:22glory to you and brings attention to a different way of
- 4:26being. We love you and we want to be
- 4:31more and more like you, Jesus, our loving Saviour, our perfect
- 4:35example. And we pray all of this in your
- 4:38name, Amen.
