- 0:00Speaker 1: And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod
- 0:03Speaker 1: he smote the rock twice, and the water came out abundantly,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and the congregation drank, and their breasts also. Numbers 20.11
- 0:16Speaker 1: Dear Lord, when I am weary on my journey to greatness,
- 0:20Speaker 1: help me to stay mindful that I do not move
- 0:23Speaker 1: outside of your command. When the weight and the pressure
- 0:28Speaker 1: of those around me closes in, I will not be
- 0:32Speaker 1: moved by the external pressures of others. But instead, I
- 0:37Speaker 1: will be moved by my internal principles of obedience to you.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I will not allow anger and frustration to cause me
- 0:47Speaker 1: to step out of my alignment, to step out of
- 0:49Speaker 1: alignment with my character. Protect me, Lord, from doing anything
- 0:55Speaker 1: that would hinder me from stepping into my promised land.
- 0:59Speaker 1: As I learn from Moses in Numbers 20 and 21,
- 1:03Speaker 1: I will intentionally set my life story before me as
- 1:07Speaker 1: I lead and guide others. It will serve as a
- 1:12Speaker 1: reminder that I'm my truest self and most effective when
- 1:17Speaker 1: I live according to your plan. Thank you for giving
- 1:21Speaker 1: me stories and examples so that I can ensure my
- 1:25Speaker 1: life is a success. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you
- 1:34Speaker 1: for praying with us today. Continue your time with God
- 1:38Speaker 1: by listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Water flows from the rock. In our last story, we
- 1:57Speaker 2: learned about Korah's plot to overthrow Moses. Korah openly challenged
- 2:02Speaker 2: Moses in front of all the people, claiming he was
- 2:06Speaker 2: a dictator and thief of glory. God's rage against Korah boiled,
- 2:11Speaker 2: for Moses was his chosen leader over the people. Korah
- 2:16Speaker 2: and all those who followed him were swallowed up by
- 2:18Speaker 2: the earth and cast into the fiery depths of Sheol.
- 2:23Speaker 2: In this story, we learn about the weariness of Moses
- 2:27Speaker 2: and how his past struggles with anger resurface. as inspired
- 2:31Speaker 2: by the book of Numbers.
- 2:36Speaker 3: I'm so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:38Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. But before we get to today's episode,
- 2:43Speaker 3: I want you to know that I would absolutely love
- 2:45Speaker 3: to send you my daily devotional that will give you
- 2:48Speaker 3: fresh encouragement every single morning and day. From the moment
- 2:53Speaker 3: we wake up to the moment our head finally hits
- 2:56Speaker 3: the pillow, there are thousands of things demanding our attention.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But it's in the midst of all this crush and
- 3:03Speaker 3: hustle and bustle that you and I need peace and
- 3:06Speaker 3: truth in God's Word. That's why I want to help
- 3:09Speaker 3: you spend time each day growing in God's life-giving, life-changing
- 3:14Speaker 3: Word by sending you my free daily email devotional, PowerPoint Today.

- 3:25Speaker 3: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our last story, we learned of
- 3:32Speaker 3: the rebellion by Korah against Moses and Aaron. We saw
- 3:35Speaker 3: how God punished Korah and other leaders for their attempt
- 3:39Speaker 3: to overthrow his servant. We also saw how the people
- 3:43Speaker 3: turned on Moses, and God dealt swiftly with them. Moses
- 3:47Speaker 3: again came to their defense, and because of him, the
- 3:49Speaker 3: Lord spared many lives. But just as we've seen before,
- 3:53Speaker 3: Moses was not perfect. He has dealt with anger before,
- 3:57Speaker 3: and today his weariness with the people will trigger that
- 4:00Speaker 3: anger to devastating personal consequences for Moses. We'll also hear
- 4:06Speaker 3: how their journey of wandering in the desert is not
- 4:08Speaker 3: an easy one. It is a far cry from the
- 4:11Speaker 3: rest they could have enjoyed in the promised land, if
- 4:14Speaker 3: only they had trusted God. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 4:20Speaker 2: The days were long and hot. The scorching sun set
- 4:24Speaker 2: its gaze upon the Israelite camp, and all those under
- 4:28Speaker 2: it grew weary and unpleasant. Water became scarce, and the
- 4:33Speaker 2: people grew irritable. Once again, like children, the people rose
- 4:38Speaker 2: against Moses and Aaron. To die in Egypt would have
- 4:41Speaker 2: been a kinder death, they yelled. Why have you brought
- 4:44Speaker 2: us out here into the wilderness to die? There is
- 4:47Speaker 2: no water, no figs, no pomegranates and no grain. The
- 4:52Speaker 2: people scowled like hungry dogs. Moses and Aaron sought guidance
- 4:57Speaker 2: from God once again. They too were weary and beaten
- 5:01Speaker 2: from the sun. Even more, they were plagued with the
- 5:04Speaker 2: constant complaining of the children of Israel. God said to them,
- 5:09Speaker 2: Take your staff and speak gently to the rocks before
- 5:13Speaker 2: the people. Make them watch as I provide them water.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly of people together and
- 5:21Speaker 2: walked towards the rocks. Their grumblings echoed in Moses' ear
- 5:26Speaker 2: like a constant trip. They mocked him more, complaining the
- 5:30Speaker 2: whole way. Their gripes were endless. Moses had a continued
- 5:36Speaker 2: battle with his internal rage. He grew up as a
- 5:39Speaker 2: part of two worlds, never truly accepted by either. His
- 5:44Speaker 2: righteous anger once caused him to kill an Egyptian and
- 5:47Speaker 2: flee to the wilderness. When he had finally found peace
- 5:51Speaker 2: with his new family, God called him to free hundreds
- 5:54Speaker 2: of thousands of people and lead them into the desert.
- 5:59Speaker 2: There was no more room for patience in his heart.
- 6:02Speaker 2: He was growing mad with the constant bombardment of grievances.
- 6:06Speaker 2: The group was behind him murmuring to one another. Finally,
- 6:10Speaker 2: in madness, he turned around to the people and yelled,
- 6:13Speaker 2: Hear me, you insolent children! You want water so bad?
- 6:17Speaker 2: And immediately Moses struck the rock with his staff, beating
- 6:21Speaker 2: it twice, and water came spilling out for everyone to drink.
- 6:26Speaker 2: It was an unsatisfying outburst. The people ignored Moses' pain
- 6:31Speaker 2: and went straight to the water to drink. They passed
- 6:34Speaker 2: him smiling and cheering. Not one of them said thank you,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but the Lord took notice. You did not believe me,
- 6:44Speaker 2: God said. I told you to speak gently to the rock,
- 6:48Speaker 2: but you struck it violently. Your anger will keep you
- 6:52Speaker 2: from seeing the promised land. And just like that, Moses
- 6:56Speaker 2: was forbidden from living long enough to see his dreams realized.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Israel continued to journey forward in search of fertile lands
- 7:05Speaker 2: to settle close to Canaan. To travel forward, they needed
- 7:09Speaker 2: to pass through the land Edom, descendants of Esau. So
- 7:14Speaker 2: Moses sent messengers to their king, saying, The king, hearing
- 7:17Speaker 2: the message from Moses, replied, IF YOU TAKE ONE STEP
- 7:35Speaker 2: INTO MY LAND, I WILL PUT A SWORD THROUGH YOU.
- 7:39Speaker 2: THEY BEGGED HIM, OFFERING TO PAY FOR ENTRY AND PASS
- 7:42Speaker 2: ON FOOT. THE KING SPAT ONTO THE GROUND AND POINTED
- 7:46Speaker 2: HIS SPEARS AT THE MESSENGERS. YOU SHALL DO NO SUCH THING.
- 7:51Speaker 2: AND HE GATHERED HIS MEN AND RODE TOWARDS ISRAEL WITH FORCE.
- 7:54Speaker 2: THEY GALLOPED TOWARDS THE OUTSKIRTS OF THEIR CITY AND MADE
- 7:57Speaker 2: THEIR CLAIM OF OWNERSHIP OVER THE LAND. THEY WERE GREAT
- 8:01Speaker 2: AND MIGHTY IN NUMBERS. so the people of Israel fled
- 8:04Speaker 2: from them. The detour added weeks to their journey. The
- 8:09Speaker 2: people of Israel dragged their feet through sand and stone
- 8:12Speaker 2: towards Mount Hor, which overlooked the promised land. God spoke
- 8:17Speaker 2: to Moses and Aaron, Gather Aaron's people, for this is
- 8:21Speaker 2: where his journey ends. So they took Aaron to the
- 8:25Speaker 2: peak of Mount Hor to overlook the land flowing with
- 8:28Speaker 2: milk and honey. Moses took Eleazar, Aaron's son, with them,
- 8:33Speaker 2: Eleazar carried his father up the mountain, for Aaron was
- 8:36Speaker 2: old and on the brink of death. Moses stripped Aaron
- 8:40Speaker 2: of his priestly clothes and put them on Eleazar. The
- 8:44Speaker 2: three of them sat there for a while, watching the
- 8:47Speaker 2: sun set over the land. Everything shimmered like gold under
- 8:51Speaker 2: the descending sunlight. There, beside his brother and son, Aaron
- 8:56Speaker 2: breathed his last breath. The people of Israel mourned his death, for.
- 9:02Speaker 1: 30 days after.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Today's story finds the Israelites stuck in the wilderness. The
- 9:10Speaker 3: days were long and hot, the sun bearing down upon
- 9:13Speaker 3: their necks. Water was scarce, and their thirst consumed their thoughts.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So the people grew tired and weary, exhausted. And as
- 9:23Speaker 3: we've seen so many times already, it's a recipe for complaints,
- 9:26Speaker 3: and that's exactly what the Israelites did, complain and complain
- 9:31Speaker 3: some more. They went to Moses and whined, dusting off
- 9:35Speaker 3: the tired argument that we should have never left Egypt.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I can't even imagine Moses' frustration. Moses and Aaron go
- 9:44Speaker 3: to God, knowing that he could bring water from even
- 9:46Speaker 3: the most unlikely source. God tells Moses to take his
- 9:49Speaker 3: staff and speak gently to the rock. God would bring
- 9:53Speaker 3: water out of the rock for his people. Moses assembles
- 9:58Speaker 3: the people. But I imagine... there must have been grumblings
- 10:01Speaker 3: in the crowd. More doubts and fears were being sown.
- 10:05Speaker 3: These troublesome children exasperate Moses. I think most parents listening
- 10:11Speaker 3: right now could say, I've been there. There are days
- 10:13Speaker 3: when frustration just bubbles over and sin rears its ugly head.
- 10:19Speaker 3: That's what happens with Moses. God called him to speak gently.
- 10:23Speaker 3: But on this day, gentleness, which is in the New
- 10:26Speaker 3: Testament a fruit of the Spirit, is far from Moses' mind.
- 10:30Speaker 3: He speaks harshly to the people, calling them rebels, and
- 10:32Speaker 3: he strikes the rock in anger. Water flows freely as
- 10:36Speaker 3: God said it would. The people drink to their fill,
- 10:39Speaker 3: but Moses has committed a grave sin in the sight
- 10:42Speaker 3: of God. He directly disobeyed God's instructions, striking the stone
- 10:47Speaker 3: rather than speaking to it. And worse than that, he
- 10:50Speaker 3: seeks out his own personal glory for the miracle that
- 10:53Speaker 3: takes place. Moses knew that he had no power of
- 10:57Speaker 3: his own. This was all the work of God. But
- 11:00Speaker 3: he points to himself and to Aaron, taking the focus
- 11:02Speaker 3: off the God who provides and placing it upon himself.
- 11:06Speaker 3: It can be tempting to want to take credit for
- 11:08Speaker 3: what God has done. but we always need to remember
- 11:12Speaker 3: where our blessings come from, not from our own hands
- 11:15Speaker 3: or our own works, but all blessings. Every blessing flows
- 11:20Speaker 3: from God who provides for this sin of pride and rebellion.
- 11:24Speaker 3: God tells Moses that he and Aaron will not enter
- 11:27Speaker 3: the promised land. Moses will continue to lead the people,
- 11:31Speaker 3: but he will never set foot in the land he's
- 11:33Speaker 3: dreamed of and desired for so long. In this reading,
- 11:37Speaker 3: We've also heard how the Israelites continued to move, searching
- 11:40Speaker 3: for fertile lands. When they tried to pass through Edom
- 11:43Speaker 3: to make their journey easier and shorter, the king there
- 11:46Speaker 3: denies them entry and the Israelites fled in fear. This
- 11:50Speaker 3: hardship could certainly have been avoided if they had only
- 11:54Speaker 3: believed God and obeyed him and followed him in the
- 11:57Speaker 3: path to the promised land. As we close the story,
- 12:01Speaker 3: Aaron reaches the end of his life. He hadn't been
- 12:04Speaker 3: a perfect servant, but he did serve Moses and God
- 12:08Speaker 3: faithfully for many years. Aaron finally breathed his last, and
- 12:12Speaker 3: though he never entered Canaan, he entered into eternal rest.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Let's pray. Dear God, thank you for this story that
- 12:21Speaker 3: reminds us that you alone are the giver of every
- 12:24Speaker 3: good and perfect gift that comes from above. Help us
- 12:28Speaker 3: in our anger and our fears and frustration to rather
- 12:32Speaker 3: exhibit gentleness, and kindness by the work of your Spirit
- 12:36Speaker 3: in us. And we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Thank you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
