- 0:18Speaker 1: how are we doing over here?
- 0:20Speaker 2: I'm just trying to get along.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Man now, Doug c Doug sings the song that you
- 0:27Speaker 1: hear at the beginning of Meat Eater Trivia, and he's
- 0:30Speaker 1: offered to play us a live rendition today.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Is that right, Doug, that's right, Dream, I'm true.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We're gonna let's let you take it away here.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's a meat Eater podcast, talk about things you might
- 0:47Speaker 2: want to hear. It's the Mediater Trivia show. People talk
- 0:59Speaker 2: about out things you might want to hear, asking about
- 1:09Speaker 2: hunting and fishing, conservation, and occasionally about white tailed Dear
- 1:23Speaker 2: Spencer Newhart, he's a host, that buttery voice, he lays
- 1:28Speaker 2: those questions down. Yes, Spencer from South Dakota. He's the
- 1:38Speaker 2: host using those smooth, mellow tones. He lays them questions down,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and he likes taking those two and three year old bucks.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And he's an avid amateur lockhound. So welcome to the podcast, friends.
- 2:08Speaker 2: There's so much to think about and talk about and learn. Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 2: welcome to the podcast friends. There's so much to think
- 2:22Speaker 2: about and talk about and learn. And here's one last
- 2:31Speaker 2: thing to remember. It's not ours, it's just our turn.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Hell yeahs dog wonderful. Thank you, Doug. What a treat.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That's the best I could do somebody else's guitar.
- 2:52Speaker 1: And the best you can do is pretty damn good.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Oh here this is for you.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And he wrote that last night in his in his
- 3:00Speaker 1: hotel room. He's got the lyrics here for me, Signed
- 3:03Speaker 1: Douctor in five point fifteen twenty four, Bozeman, Montana. Thank you, Doug.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Beautiful.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Well it's all downhill for here from here for me.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You think so. You've bet on media or trivia before,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but this is Carl Malcolm's first time. Do you have
- 3:18Speaker 1: any advice for Carl Doug as a vet? Just be yourself, Carl, Okay,
- 3:23Speaker 1: be yourself? Carl. Did you bring any music with you today?
- 3:27Speaker 4: Well, I've always got some music with me, man, But
- 3:30Speaker 4: I feel like it's a tough act to follow right there.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, no one's gonna try. No, Thank you, Doug, there's
- 3:35Speaker 1: a lot of fun. When when did you decide you
- 3:38Speaker 1: were gonna write that little tune?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Uh? You know that before that year where we all
- 3:43Speaker 2: had to stay home, there were gonna be some live shows,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and Steve had asked me to do a couple of them,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and he said, hey, and bring your guitar. Uh huh,
- 3:51Speaker 2: And I said, uh why, and well, yeah, maybe you
- 3:57Speaker 2: could play a couple songs before we get started, like
- 4:00Speaker 2: sure some covers? He goes, oh, no, right, one, Like
- 4:03Speaker 2: somehow I could just sit down and write a song,
- 4:05Speaker 2: right yeah? But uh I did, And then of course
- 4:10Speaker 2: we all had to stay home, so that never happened,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and it ended up writing seven verses for that song
- 4:15Speaker 2: and I the second verse is actually in the original
- 4:18Speaker 2: version is about him, but there we go. We changed
- 4:21Speaker 2: it up for.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah, It's the Meat Eater podcast blues trivia version. Well done, Doug. Now, Carl,
- 4:27Speaker 1: this is your first time on trivia. How do you
- 4:29Speaker 1: feel about your chances?
- 4:31Speaker 3: Well, I'm intimidated by the room.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I know we've got some very solid trivia experts in
- 4:36Speaker 4: that house. But the categories are subject matter near and
- 4:42Speaker 4: dear in my heart. So I figured figure out ald
- 4:43Speaker 4: my own.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Okay, that's what I'm hoping.
- 4:45Speaker 3: For, Spencer. I have a little Carl Malcolm trivia for you.
- 4:47Speaker 3: All right, Carl was in attendance at the Mouse the Palace.
- 4:51Speaker 1: WHOA really, where were you sitting at?
- 4:54Speaker 3: I was sitting through the beer. No, I definitely did not.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I did see.
- 5:01Speaker 3: I saw.
- 5:03Speaker 4: So if everybody's not familiar with the Mouse at the Palace,
- 5:05Speaker 4: was this brawl between the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It would have been like.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Two thousand and two, two, two thousand and four. So
- 5:14Speaker 4: I was there in the house and I saw. I
- 5:17Speaker 4: saw this fan throw the drink that hit roun our
- 5:20Speaker 4: Test in the chest while he was laying on the
- 5:22Speaker 4: scorer's table, and the melee that ensued. It's one of
- 5:24Speaker 4: the one of the craziest sporting event experiences I've ever had.
- 5:28Speaker 3: For this is the best factoid I've learned all week.
- 5:30Speaker 1: That's great. That was probably like a ticket stub era.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Do you have the ticket from that game? You know?
- 5:34Speaker 5: I do know, I do not.
- 5:36Speaker 1: You need to get your hands on one. Just didn't have.
- 5:39Speaker 4: That's the first time that that has ever entered my thought.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Maybe that young lady that you took to the game.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Has It's sad we're out of the ticket stub Ara.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I'd love to have all my tickets to concerts and
- 5:52Speaker 1: games and stuff like that.
- 5:54Speaker 6: I feel that way about hunting licenses, although it's much
- 5:57Speaker 6: easier to go to haunt with an app and just
- 6:01Speaker 6: tag your animal with an app. I have a very
- 6:05Speaker 6: thick folder of twenty years of hunting licenses, and as
- 6:09Speaker 6: of a couple of years ago, there's just nothing being added.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Yeah, kill more trees in the world, That's what I
- 6:16Speaker 1: always say. Now, this is a ten round quick mohow
- 6:19Speaker 1: with questions from meat Eater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing,
- 6:22Speaker 1: conservation and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat Eater
- 6:25Speaker 1: will donate five hundred dollars to the conservation organization of
- 6:28Speaker 1: the winner's choosing, and because this episode is brought to
- 6:31Speaker 1: you by Heart and Soil, they're matching our donation at
- 6:34Speaker 1: the end of the game. Thanks to Heart and Soil,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the winner will make a one thousand dollars conservation donation
- 6:40Speaker 1: today and for the stat of the week. This week
- 6:43Speaker 1: we're looking at the first time that Doug was on
- 6:46Speaker 1: Meat Eater Trivia. It was our fifth ever game, which
- 6:49Speaker 1: was episode three oh seven. Steve was our winner that
- 6:52Speaker 1: day with eight points. Doug, do you remember how well
- 6:55Speaker 1: you did?
- 6:56Speaker 2: I don't think I matched the Shelby index.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Doug was the loser that day with two correct answers.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I think I checked out after like number five. But
- 7:07Speaker 2: wasn't Jim Hefflefinger there he was.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Jim Hefflefinger was there. He came in second place. He
- 7:11Speaker 1: had seven correct answers. Doug, do you think you're now
- 7:14Speaker 1: better equipped to win media to trivia than you were
- 7:16Speaker 1: two or three years ago?
- 7:18Speaker 2: No, I've lost memory and stuff. So unless you uh
- 7:23Speaker 2: throw me a bone, which I tried to send you
- 7:26Speaker 2: a message last night, I want to tell you about
- 7:28Speaker 2: the integrity of this game. Spencer, you know, said well,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to having you on. So I actually
- 7:34Speaker 2: sent him a question, not the answer, just the question.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But he's like, no, no, I've got a bone.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Doug, the first ever guest who tried to send me
- 7:43Speaker 1: the question that would be there on the podcast. That
- 7:48Speaker 1: will not be in today's episode, but you'll probably use
- 7:51Speaker 1: it some other times some other time.
- 7:52Speaker 5: I think so good questions.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It was a good question. Did you know the dog
- 7:56Speaker 1: could just ask you guys, Doug, you could just use
- 7:58Speaker 1: your question right now if you'd like.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Uh. The movie Rancho Deluxe was filmed in this area
- 8:08Speaker 2: and was written by a famous resident of the area
- 8:13Speaker 2: since the nineteen sixties. He's a rancher, he's a hunter.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Jim Harrison Brody got it him.
- 8:20Speaker 8: Sure.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I think McGain is probably a good bet.
- 8:23Speaker 2: He didn't, you know. He looked at me like, oh,
- 8:24Speaker 2: come on, give me something harder than that.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So there was that was the bone that Dug wanted
- 8:30Speaker 1: me to throw him. I heard the set of that
- 8:32Speaker 1: movie was crazy.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston. There's also a scene
- 8:38Speaker 2: that was recorded in downtown Bozeman in the back in
- 8:42Speaker 2: the day when they had little fly tie in shops
- 8:44Speaker 2: and they walk in and Jeff Bridges is talking to
- 8:48Speaker 2: the gallon there. The really good trivia question is what
- 8:52Speaker 2: fly were they tying that day?
- 8:54Speaker 1: All right, Brody? What fly were they tying? I don't know.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Royal co was in the seventies.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It was the Royal Coachman.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Oh did you know that one? Chester just a guess.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Right, well, because he watched What Fly Your Time to day?
- 9:08Speaker 2: And she goes to the Royal coachman and you see all
- 9:10Speaker 2: these people moving on. There's just rows of them.
- 9:14Speaker 4: It's a good fly for Hollywood.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the Doug During trivia portion of our
- 9:19Speaker 1: show today, now here's our Infrequently Asked Questions segment. If
- 9:23Speaker 1: you have a trivia related question for our crew, send
- 9:25Speaker 1: it to trivia at the Meat eater dot com with
- 9:28Speaker 1: the subject line, I f a you Chase Hayhurt says,
- 9:32Speaker 1: do games with Steve last longer than games without him?
- 9:35Speaker 1: This is a question. About a dozen folks have sent
- 9:37Speaker 1: it in. It's actually a question I answered about two
- 9:39Speaker 1: years ago in a stance portion of the show. I
- 9:42Speaker 1: looked into it at that time. I compared about fifteen
- 9:44Speaker 1: episodes with Steve fifteen episodes without. We found that episodes
- 9:48Speaker 1: with Steve are nine percent longer than the episodes that
- 9:51Speaker 1: don't have Steve. Uh. He injects some extra banter and
- 9:54Speaker 1: usually arguing into the show. That makes him a little
- 9:58Speaker 1: little longer. I've heard from a lot of listeners that
- 10:00Speaker 1: if they open up the podcast on Wednesday morning and
- 10:02Speaker 1: they see that it's over like forty five minutes, they
- 10:05Speaker 1: know that either Steve is here or went to overtime.
- 10:08Speaker 1: So if we get to fifty minutes, then it's probably both.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Now here is some housekeeping to get to. In a
- 10:14Speaker 1: previous game of trivia, we had a question about podhunters,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and Steve was upset that he got it wrong and
- 10:20Speaker 1: pivoted to blaming dictionary dot Com for not providing a
- 10:24Speaker 1: good definition. I tried the counter Steve by reading a
- 10:27Speaker 1: Merriam Webster Dictionary definition, but accidentally pulled the Collins Dictionary
- 10:31Speaker 1: definition instead. So I just wanted to clear up those
- 10:34Speaker 1: definitions today. Dictionary dot Com and Collins Dictionary both define
- 10:38Speaker 1: podhunter as a person who hunts for food or profit,
- 10:42Speaker 1: ignoring the rules of sport. Oxford Languages defines pod hunter
- 10:47Speaker 1: as a person who hunts solely to achieve a kill
- 10:50Speaker 1: rather than a sport, and Merriam Webster defines podhunter as
- 10:54Speaker 1: one who hunts game for food. I think if Steve
- 10:58Speaker 1: were here now, he'd agree that Merriam wab Robster had
- 11:00Speaker 1: the weakest definition of all four of those dictionaries. And
- 11:04Speaker 1: he was just mad that Randall got it right and
- 11:07Speaker 1: he got it wrong like he didn't he so the
- 11:12Speaker 1: he was upset that the definition I pulled was from
- 11:15Speaker 1: Collins Dictionary and dictionary dot Com, and it was you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: what's the nine letter word for a person who hunts profits?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Answer that that's right. He didn't. He didn't get it right.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Randall did.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yes, and he won that day. Yes, thank you. Context
- 11:33Speaker 3: really helps round it out.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Now. The Shelby Index for today's round is a four
- 11:37Speaker 1: and a half, so our winner should get nine correct answers.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And with that we're onto the game of trivia. Play
- 11:43Speaker 1: the drop, Phil, Look, I need to know what I
- 11:49Speaker 1: stand to win everything? Was just tend to win everything.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Demon Suckers.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Question one. The topic is nature. This will be multiple
- 12:06Speaker 1: choice and this first grade question is via Tiffany Sipe. Alaska, Hawaii, Maine,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and Vermont have banned these in an effort to preserve
- 12:17Speaker 1: their states natural beauty. Is it billboards sell towers, skyscrapers,
- 12:23Speaker 1: or wind farms? Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, and Vermont have banned
- 12:32Speaker 1: these in an effort to preserve their state's natural beauty.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Your four choices billboards sell towers, skyscrapers, wind farms? This
- 12:44Speaker 1: is question one. This will be your only multiple choice
- 12:47Speaker 1: question in the game. Billboards sell towers, skyscrapers, or wind forms?
- 12:53Speaker 1: And the four states are Alaska, Hawaii, Main and Vermont.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Does anybody know this? No, everybody is is taking a guess.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It appears m hm, Yanni, is anything coming to mind?
- 13:10Speaker 1: I feel like you've you've been to most of these states, right.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Actually I've only been to uh.
- 13:18Speaker 5: One of those.
- 13:20Speaker 1: He doesn't know it. Alaska, Hawaii man in Vermont have
- 13:24Speaker 1: banned these in an effort to preserve their state's natural beauty. Billboards,
- 13:29Speaker 1: cell towers, skyscrapers, or wind farms. Yanni, you're the only
- 13:34Speaker 1: one who doesn't have an answer right now.
- 13:38Speaker 8: By the way, there is no way for you to
- 13:40Speaker 8: hold that whiteboard without somebody seeing it. You mean you're
- 13:45Speaker 8: cheating and didn't say that.
- 13:48Speaker 1: He hasn't changed his answer yet.
- 13:51Speaker 8: Well, when you turn to Yannis and you're holding your
- 13:53Speaker 8: whiteboard up like a billboard.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I can see Garrett's billboard right now.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Hold on?
- 14:00Speaker 1: Okay, Brody has nailed it down.
- 14:02Speaker 5: To te meanie mining moll, catch tiger bye. That's all.
- 14:07Speaker 5: If he hollers he did.
- 14:09Speaker 1: It, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Chessire
- 14:13Speaker 1: saying billboards, Carl saying skyscrapers, Tresa skyscrapers, Randall billboards, Garrett skyscrapers,
- 14:22Speaker 1: Brody billboards, Yanni billboards, Bubbly Doug billboards. The correct answer
- 14:31Speaker 1: is billboards. Most of you got that right. Those are
- 14:35Speaker 1: the only four states in America to ban billboards, with
- 14:38Speaker 1: Hawaii being the first in nineteen twenty seven and Maine
- 14:42Speaker 1: being the most recent in nineteen seventy seven. When the
- 14:46Speaker 1: main governor signed that bill, over eight thousand highway billboards
- 14:49Speaker 1: were ordered to be removed. Even the state's president of
- 14:53Speaker 1: the Chamber of Commerce was in favor of the ban,
- 14:56Speaker 1: saying that billboard law improved Maine's quality of life. Only
- 15:00Speaker 1: four states to eliminate billboards.
- 15:02Speaker 8: You know, not to pull Steve here, but just being
- 15:05Speaker 8: in Hawaii, I'd like to know the definition of a
- 15:07Speaker 8: billboard somewhat size sign are we talking about? Yeah, pretty
- 15:11Speaker 8: big signs along the road.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And in some states now or some businesses in those states,
- 15:16Speaker 1: we'll just put their billboard on wheels, so then it's
- 15:19Speaker 1: like they're not technically breaking the rule, right if it's
- 15:21Speaker 1: on the side of like a U haul something like that.
- 15:24Speaker 1: But Maine, I think Maine had very specific definitions. Can
- 15:26Speaker 1: be with so many feet of a road, can't be
- 15:29Speaker 1: of a certain size. You know folks will bend the rules.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Question two, The topic is hunting. This is our listener
- 15:35Speaker 1: question of the week, which was won by Jeff Sessions
- 15:38Speaker 1: for sending this great question. Jeff is going to get
- 15:41Speaker 1: a board game signed by.
- 15:42Speaker 3: The crew the Sessions Who's.
- 15:47Speaker 1: If you want a chance to win our listener question
- 15:49Speaker 1: in the week and send your question to Trivia at
- 15:51Speaker 1: the meat eater dot com. The topic is hunting. The
- 15:55Speaker 1: five subspecies of this game animal are American or Mexican
- 16:01Speaker 1: peninsular and sonoran, says question two. The topic is hunting.
- 16:10Speaker 1: The five subspecies of this game animal are American organ,
- 16:16Speaker 1: Mexican peninsular, and sonorin. Our players appear to be stumped.
- 16:22Speaker 1: No one has come up with an answer quite yet,
- 16:26Speaker 1: and this is according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
- 16:29Speaker 1: The five subspecies American organ, Mexican peninsular, and sonorin.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Are are all of the subspecies a sustainable huntable population.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Not gonna tell you anymore, American organ, Mexican peninsular, and sonoran.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Brody begrudgingly came up with an answer. Brody, do you
- 16:52Speaker 1: like your answer or not? Maybe? He says, chester you
- 16:57Speaker 1: have an answer. How do you feel about your answer?
- 17:00Speaker 2: Name is Brody?
- 17:00Speaker 1: Just can maybe this is question two?
- 17:07Speaker 2: Well, there goes my confidence.
- 17:10Speaker 1: M bubbly, Doug. You got the first one right though,
- 17:13Speaker 1: so he's one for one. Doug even wrote down the
- 17:18Speaker 1: Shelby index in the corner of his whiteboard. M.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Gotta have goals man.
- 17:24Speaker 1: The five subspecies of this game animal are American organ,
- 17:29Speaker 1: Mexican peninsular, and sonoran. What do you got, Randall.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Any additional hints you can offer?
- 17:41Speaker 1: Not giving you any hints again? This was from the
- 17:45Speaker 1: US Fish and Wildlife Service.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Complete stab in the dark.
- 17:51Speaker 8: I wish sometimes you could just not answer to not
- 17:54Speaker 8: shed light on how stupid you are.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You could you could just not the answer, Garrett, That's fine.
- 18:01Speaker 5: I would.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I didn't say it was talking about me. Oh yeah,
- 18:05Speaker 1: that was for Brodie's sake.
- 18:07Speaker 5: You see what he's right?
- 18:08Speaker 1: American organ, Mexican peninsular, and sonorin Carl, how do you
- 18:16Speaker 1: feel about your answer? Okay? Is everybody ready?
- 18:20Speaker 5: No? How much time do I have?
- 18:23Speaker 2: Somebody has the same answer I do, so I don't
- 18:25Speaker 2: feel really.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Okay, Yanni, Brodie, you boys are running out of time.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I think we're just waiting on you. He wait m
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yanni also declared he has a heart out in about
- 18:39Speaker 1: thirty minutes. So yeah, I will remind you of that
- 18:42Speaker 1: as you sit there with a blank white boy.
- 18:44Speaker 6: Oh gosh.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Five subspecies, Brody, did you change your answer? You're sticking
- 18:51Speaker 1: with what you had? Okay, change his answer.
- 18:54Speaker 5: No, that's not right, Yanni.
- 18:59Speaker 1: It's the hard you got kids to pick up from volleyball.
- 19:02Speaker 1: That's right, Okay, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 19:06Speaker 1: have Chester saying blacktail, Carl saying rail, Tresa saying deer,
- 19:13Speaker 1: Randall saying desert bighorn, Garrett sang mountain lion, Brody saying
- 19:19Speaker 1: desert bighorn. Yanni says iguana. Oh, bubbly, Doug says raccoon.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Nobody got it. Correct answer is pronghorn antelope.
- 19:29Speaker 9: Although the US Fish and Wildlife Service says there are
- 19:34Speaker 9: five subspecies of antelope, other agencies say that if you
- 19:38Speaker 9: go by genetic testing, then there are just three.
- 19:41Speaker 1: The peninsular and Sonoran pronghorn are on the endangered species list.
- 19:45Speaker 1: It's estimated that there are about one hundred and fifty
- 19:47Speaker 1: peninsular prong horn and four hundred sonoran prong horn left
- 19:51Speaker 1: in the wild.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Question now that you've heard it, No, I.
- 19:59Speaker 6: Think we might have had a little snippet about it
- 20:03Speaker 6: in The Meter's Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game,
- 20:08Speaker 6: Volume one.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Question three, the topic is cooking. The Food Network describes
- 20:14Speaker 1: this as quote a traditional Korean dish made with salted
- 20:19Speaker 1: and fermented vegetables. Is question three. After question two, there
- 20:25Speaker 1: are no perfect games remaining. The topic is cooking. The
- 20:29Speaker 1: Food Network describes this as a traditional Korean dish made
- 20:34Speaker 1: with salted and fermented vegetables. Brody Carl Randall appear to
- 20:40Speaker 1: be confident. Randall, you got this one right.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I feel pretty confident.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Carl, you got this one right.
- 20:46Speaker 4: I am feeling pretty confident.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I feel better than I did one question ago.
- 20:50Speaker 1: We may have went from a zero percenter to a
- 20:52Speaker 1: one hundred percenter here, Garrett says, no, is everybody ready?
- 20:59Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Chester saying miso.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Carl says kim chi. Tresa and Randall and Garrett and
- 21:08Speaker 1: Brody and Yanni and Bubbly Doug say kim chi. They
- 21:12Speaker 1: got it. Oh, the correct answer is kim chi kimchi flavor.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Is described as sour, sweet, and spicy, which it accomplishes
- 21:21Speaker 1: through ingredients such as Napa cabbage, garlic, ginger fish sauce,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and chili flakes. According to Anna Borgman's Meat Eater article
- 21:29Speaker 1: called Gut Microbes one oh one, eating kimchi is a
- 21:32Speaker 1: delicious way to introduce natural microbes to your body. Question four,
- 21:37Speaker 1: the topic is fishing. This brand, which is known for
- 21:42Speaker 1: its legend and mojo fishing rods, is named after a
- 21:47Speaker 1: river on the Minnesota Wisconsin border.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Look at Chester, go, thank you, Brody.
- 21:55Speaker 1: On that one, the topic is fishing. This brand, which
- 21:59Speaker 1: is known for its legend and mojo fishing rods, is
- 22:03Speaker 1: named after a river on the Wisconsin border. Okay, Brody,
- 22:09Speaker 1: he's very confident. We have a few players in the
- 22:13Speaker 1: room here from Wisconsin, Doug, Carl Chester. They look like
- 22:19Speaker 1: they know it.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I'm hoping that wasn't my bone.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not confident, Doug.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I feel pretty good about it.
- 22:28Speaker 1: This brand, which is known for its legend and mojo
- 22:31Speaker 1: fishing rods, is named after a river on the Minnesota
- 22:35Speaker 1: Wisconsin border.
- 22:37Speaker 8: If I'm right, this is a really weird name for
- 22:39Speaker 8: a river. Oh.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I can't wait to see that.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Did you go with Muskox hide, No, No, Randall, do
- 22:51Speaker 1: you have this one right?
- 22:52Speaker 3: I believe so?
- 22:52Speaker 1: Okay, he's everybody.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I was trying to think of all the rod company
- 22:56Speaker 3: names that would be a funny river. I'm curious to
- 22:59Speaker 3: what Garrett has if I came up with that one.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Chester and
- 23:04Speaker 1: Carl saying Saint Croix, Treessa saying red. Which is the
- 23:08Speaker 1: opposite border on Minnesota. That's the Minnesota North Dakota border.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Randall says Saint Croix. Garrett says the ugly stick river.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Rody and Yanni and Bubbly. Doug say Saint Croix.
- 23:22Speaker 3: That's gonna go with Lamaglass.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Actually, the first one that came to my mind was ugly.
- 23:28Speaker 1: The correct answer is Saint Croix. Most of you've got
- 23:31Speaker 1: that right. Saint Croix was founded in nineteen forty eight
- 23:35Speaker 1: by Bob and Bill Johnson. They broke onto the scene
- 23:38Speaker 1: by creating the first multi section bamboo fishing rod on
- 23:42Speaker 1: the market. The river that the company is named after
- 23:45Speaker 1: starts just south of Lake Superior, then follows the Minnesota
- 23:48Speaker 1: Wisconsin border for one hundred and twenty five miles before
- 23:52Speaker 1: draining into the Mississippi. Are Wisconsin folks in the room.
- 23:56Speaker 1: What familiarity do you have with the Saint Croix River?
- 23:59Speaker 1: You ever go fish there? Do you ever do anything
- 24:00Speaker 1: around the Saint Croix?
- 24:02Speaker 2: I bought a fish and rod from that company.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Okay, that that helps, Carl Chester and anything. Just know
- 24:11Speaker 1: it exists.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Never have I fished it.
- 24:13Speaker 4: But I bought a rod of theirs that I like
- 24:14Speaker 4: so much that I then bought two more. So I
- 24:16Speaker 4: have three identical setups that are just there.
- 24:19Speaker 1: You got the bomb. Good. You're a good Wisconsin angler
- 24:22Speaker 1: for supporting that Wisconsin brand. Here's question five. The topic
- 24:26Speaker 1: is wildlife. This next great question is via Sam Why Rick.
- 24:29Speaker 1: This is an audio question. Phil is going to play
- 24:32Speaker 1: you thirty seconds of an animal vocalization. You need to
- 24:36Speaker 1: identify what animal is making that sound, and here is
- 24:40Speaker 1: your clue. This is the second most popular state bird
- 24:45Speaker 1: representing Kansas, Wyoming and more. Play the clip.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Phil Chester needs to put some headphones on if you
- 24:52Speaker 7: want to. Yeah, sure, thanks, Okay, here we go.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Again. That's the second most popular state bird representing Kansas,
- 25:27Speaker 1: Wyoming and more.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And more.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Chester knew that one right away. He just needed to
- 25:34Speaker 1: hear those first few knows.
- 25:36Speaker 2: A sick look on his face here in the headlights.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Okay, Brody, you know this one.
- 25:43Speaker 8: I'm not I think I do, but I did hear
- 25:46Speaker 8: a magpie waiting.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Well again, I told you that you're naming the second
- 25:51Speaker 1: most popular state bird. So if you think that's a magpie,
- 25:55Speaker 1: then I encourage you to write it second most popular
- 26:00Speaker 1: the state bird representing Kansas, Wyoming and more. It's everybody ready,
- 26:10Speaker 1: quick answers? Doug Duran, how well do you know your birds?
- 26:13Speaker 3: You know?
- 26:14Speaker 2: I have that app on app on my phone and
- 26:16Speaker 2: I've been just digging it during Turkey season. Yeah, and
- 26:20Speaker 2: I'm sure I know what that one is. But then
- 26:22Speaker 2: there's some stuff that threw me at the end, because
- 26:24Speaker 2: this is a fairly common bird.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Okay, Ecologist Carl, do you know this one?
- 26:29Speaker 4: I am middle in on my response.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Okay, Oh, Chester is going through. We have some uh,
- 26:35Speaker 1: we have some bird themed coasters on the table here.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I don't know if you got to what might help
- 26:41Speaker 1: him out or not. Is everybody ready go ahead and
- 26:45Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Chester saying meadow lark. Carl
- 26:49Speaker 1: sang meadow lark, Tresa and Randall and Garrett and Brody
- 26:54Speaker 1: sang meadow lark. Yanni says red wing blackbird, bubbly, Doug
- 26:58Speaker 1: says red wing.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Black and he crossed out metal lark.
- 27:02Speaker 1: The correct answer is what Doug crossed out the western
- 27:06Speaker 1: meadow lark. Everybody but Yanni and Doug got that one.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I'm never looking at ard again.
- 27:14Speaker 1: You boys thought that might be the second most popular
- 27:17Speaker 1: state bird. I wonder if there's any state bird or
- 27:19Speaker 1: if there's any state that has the blackbird as their
- 27:22Speaker 1: state bird, the red wing the red wing blackbird. Western
- 27:26Speaker 1: metal larks are the state bird of Kansas, Montana, Nebraska,
- 27:30Speaker 1: North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming. According to the Cornell Lab,
- 27:34Speaker 1: they have a complex, two phrase primary song that begins
- 27:38Speaker 1: with one to six pure whistles and descends to a
- 27:41Speaker 1: series of one to five gurgling warbles. Metal larks develop
- 27:45Speaker 1: a repertoire of about a dozen songs that range from
- 27:48Speaker 1: courtship songs to intruder songs. Phil, we're halfway through the
- 27:53Speaker 1: game of trivia. What you got Chester?
- 27:54Speaker 2: Oh?
- 27:54Speaker 10: I was just gonna say. The cool thing about metal
- 27:56Speaker 10: larks is, I don't know if there's any other birds
- 27:59Speaker 10: like this, but you'll be driving down the interstate like
- 28:02Speaker 10: I ninety, going eighty miles an hour, and it cuts.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Through like you can hear them.
- 28:08Speaker 1: M I never noticed.
- 28:11Speaker 10: But through the seals are your doors.
- 28:14Speaker 1: And the Western meadow lark. Phil give us a scoreboard
- 28:18Speaker 1: update after halfway through. After we're halfway through a game
- 28:21Speaker 1: of trivia.
- 28:22Speaker 3: You do all right, Doug?
- 28:24Speaker 2: I'm just you know, what is it you say when
- 28:27Speaker 2: you're a kid? Cheaters? Proof? That's what I get for cheating.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Sitting next to Brody, I'd been better off.
- 28:36Speaker 11: Tressa and Garrett have two points apiece, Carl, Jannis, Doug
- 28:41Speaker 11: and Chester I'll have three, and tied up in first
- 28:44Speaker 11: place are Brody, Henderson and Randall Williams with four points.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Everybody's really excited about it.
- 28:53Speaker 5: Anybody's game.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is woodsmanship. This next great question
- 29:07Speaker 1: is via Andy del Forge. Merriam Webster defines this seven
- 29:12Speaker 1: letter word as quote the carrying of boats or goods
- 29:17Speaker 1: overland from one body of water to another.
- 29:22Speaker 3: How does Collins Dictionary define it?
- 29:24Speaker 1: I have a bet pretty similar. Merriam Webster defines this
- 29:27Speaker 1: seven letter word as the carrying of boats or goods
- 29:31Speaker 1: overland from one body of water to another.
- 29:35Speaker 8: Don't know a lot of seven letter words.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Okay, did the little hangman sketch and see if you
- 29:41Speaker 1: can come up with your seven letters or not? Chester,
- 29:44Speaker 1: can you adjust your mic thing on the butt?
- 29:47Speaker 8: Oh?
- 29:47Speaker 1: There we go, fix it?
- 29:49Speaker 2: So is that the bone is?
- 29:58Speaker 1: Just?
- 29:58Speaker 2: Wait?
- 29:59Speaker 1: Well the bone? One was the question about the river
- 30:01Speaker 1: on the Minnesota Wisconsin border, and it's only like one
- 30:04Speaker 1: hundred miles from your farm, Doug. Right, that's right right
- 30:08Speaker 1: in your wheelhouse.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I'd say, I feel like this is some bonage as well.
- 30:12Speaker 12: Okay, seven going off on seven letter word the carrying
- 30:18Speaker 12: of boats or goods overland from one body of water
- 30:22Speaker 12: to another.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Is everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 30:29Speaker 1: have Chester and Carl saying portage. Trest, this says travels.
- 30:33Speaker 1: The rest of the room says portage, and they got it.
- 30:35Speaker 1: The correct answer is portage, Doug, Why would that be
- 30:39Speaker 1: your bone? Am I missing some sortage?
- 30:41Speaker 2: Wisconsin is thirty miles from me. There is a very
- 30:44Speaker 2: very famous area because the storage canoes from the Fox
- 30:48Speaker 2: River to the Wisconsin River, therefore connecting the Atlantic Ocean
- 30:53Speaker 2: to the Gulf of Okay.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Well, then we threw two bones your way.
- 30:56Speaker 3: This Yeah, Peter stark Y, he was talking about that,
- 31:02Speaker 3: he's going to try to take it on the summer.
- 31:04Speaker 2: And I was during that podcast, was going, well, you
- 31:07Speaker 2: know there's a canal, and then he gets to the
- 31:10Speaker 2: talking to the podcast, right and he says, well, you
- 31:12Speaker 2: know there's a canal, so whether or not he'll yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 2: I drive through there fairly often.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Portage was borrowed from French in the fifteenth century, when
- 31:22Speaker 1: it simply meant carrying or transporting. The definition of moving
- 31:26Speaker 1: boats over dry land was born in sixteen ninety eight
- 31:30Speaker 1: and was first used to describe the canoeing obstacle that
- 31:33Speaker 1: is Niagara Falls. Question seven. The topic is fishing. The
- 31:38Speaker 1: George Perry World record largemouth bass was caught on Montgomery
- 31:43Speaker 1: Lake in this state.
- 31:47Speaker 8: You guys, hear fishing questions.
- 31:49Speaker 1: All the time. Is question seven? The George Perry World
- 31:54Speaker 1: record largemouth bass was caught on Montgomery Lake in this state.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Brody and Randall appear to know it. Carl, you know
- 32:05Speaker 1: this one as well? Maybe he says, Doug, do you
- 32:11Speaker 1: know this one?
- 32:13Speaker 2: No? And I don't want to say what why?
- 32:15Speaker 1: I okay.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I came up with the answer because it would be
- 32:18Speaker 2: a hint.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Are there any largemouth bass on the Duran farm? As
- 32:22Speaker 1: a matter of fact, there are really okay.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Little uh we have little farm pond that's got fast
- 32:30Speaker 2: bluegills and crappies in it, and they are spawning like crazy.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Did you put them all in there? Have they been
- 32:35Speaker 1: in there?
- 32:37Speaker 2: Yeah? I'm not sure how they got in there?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Okay, no clue, they just dugs. Okay. The George Perry
- 32:51Speaker 1: World record large mouth bass was caught on Montgomery Lake
- 32:56Speaker 1: in this state. Is everybody ready?
- 33:00Speaker 8: Hm?
- 33:00Speaker 1: Hm?
- 33:03Speaker 2: Who's not ready?
- 33:04Speaker 1: Mister Fisherman Chester Floyd says he's not quite ready yet.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Chester has a get Tomorrow night. He's playing some music. Chester.
- 33:14Speaker 1: You're playing all originals or all covers or a.
- 33:16Speaker 10: Mix, playing about seven originals. My buddy's playing about three originals,
- 33:24Speaker 10: and then the rest are covers.
- 33:25Speaker 1: What give me some examples of the covers?
- 33:27Speaker 10: You're playing the covers? A Trampled by Turtles song, Ain't
- 33:32Speaker 10: no use in trying. We're playing a couple of Jim
- 33:36Speaker 10: Crochey songs like walking back to Georgia and uh what else?
- 33:42Speaker 10: A camp song called Bye and Bye, A couple of
- 33:48Speaker 10: cowboy tunes.
- 33:49Speaker 1: You should play a Trampled by Turtles cover when you
- 33:52Speaker 1: open for Trampled by Turtles. You did, what did you play?
- 33:56Speaker 10: Ain't no use?
- 33:57Speaker 1: Oh? Okay? Yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 10: The band members after that we're like, we were like
- 34:03Speaker 10: listening and then we like that song sounds familiar.
- 34:08Speaker 1: That's a ballsy movie. Yeah, well, no I asked before
- 34:13Speaker 1: you should you should play a Tom Petty cover of Wildflowers,
- 34:17Speaker 1: which is also a trample by Turtles cover, So you
- 34:19Speaker 1: can do it. It's like a triple cover. Oh at
- 34:22Speaker 1: that point, they didn't do it.
- 34:24Speaker 10: I'm doing one one more show that people Sylvie able
- 34:27Speaker 10: to show up for June first out at Bridge of Brewing.
- 34:29Speaker 10: It's a brewfest, so.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Come on out for that one. It's everybody ready. We're
- 34:34Speaker 1: looking for what state Montgomery Lake is where the world
- 34:37Speaker 1: record large mouth came from. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 34:41Speaker 1: We have Chester saying Florida, Carl says Texas, Tresa Minnesota,
- 34:47Speaker 1: Randall saying g A. Carrott says Minnesota, Brody says Georgia.
- 34:53Speaker 1: He crossed out Alabama. Yanni says Alabama. Bubbly Doug says Alabama.
- 34:58Speaker 1: We have a correct answer in the can you come
- 35:00Speaker 1: up without yourself, Doug, it's Georgia. Brody and Randall got
- 35:05Speaker 1: that one sight.
- 35:06Speaker 3: I was afraid of you work in it the way
- 35:07Speaker 3: you read my border.
- 35:08Speaker 10: I was afraid were catching fashion Georgia rather walking back.
- 35:13Speaker 1: He very skeptically said, ged the g was a little
- 35:17Speaker 1: funny looking, so I was. I was caught off guard
- 35:19Speaker 1: by a second.
- 35:19Speaker 3: When I looked at it, I thought it was a
- 35:21Speaker 3: perfectly natural g.
- 35:22Speaker 1: The George Perry bass was caught in nineteen thirty two
- 35:26Speaker 1: and weighed twenty two pounds four ounces. Perry was twenty
- 35:29Speaker 1: years old at the time. Using the one lure he owned,
- 35:33Speaker 1: which was a Creek Chubb fantail shiner, he had the
- 35:36Speaker 1: bass weighted at the post office, then fed the fish
- 35:39Speaker 1: to his family for the next three days. Perry's record
- 35:42Speaker 1: still stands, but was tied by a Japanese angler in
- 35:46Speaker 1: two thousand and nine. Question eight the topic is cooking.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Divide these parts of a turkey into white meat and
- 35:55Speaker 1: dark meat. According to Cooks illustrated, leg, breast, wing, thigh,
- 36:03Speaker 1: you need to divide those four parts of a turkey
- 36:07Speaker 1: into white meat and dark meat. Leg, breast, wing, thigh
- 36:18Speaker 1: is your marker struggling over there, Brody, I'm just being emphatic.
- 36:25Speaker 1: You need to divide these into white meat and dark meat.
- 36:27Speaker 1: And this is according to Cook's illustrated leg breast, wing, thigh.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Carl very quick to answer, Carl, you got this one right.
- 36:37Speaker 4: If it's not right, I would take issue with illustrator.
- 36:40Speaker 1: There we go. I'd like you to direct your anger
- 36:42Speaker 1: at them, not me. Doug, you had some feedback.
- 36:46Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, for all the complaining I've
- 36:48Speaker 2: heard about the whiteboards, the pens work great, racer works great,
- 36:52Speaker 2: and the white.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Well, these are whiteboards two point zero. We're at the
- 36:56Speaker 1: beginning of their life span. Probably in a year or so,
- 36:59Speaker 1: we will uh auction these things off once folks have
- 37:02Speaker 1: heartily complained about them leg breast, wing, thigh.
- 37:06Speaker 10: I feel like this is like a trick question.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Okay, is everybody ready?
- 37:11Speaker 2: Nope?
- 37:13Speaker 8: I don't think it's as easy as you think it is.
- 37:15Speaker 5: There ain't no tricks. I want a turkey.
- 37:17Speaker 1: No, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have chesters
- 37:24Speaker 1: saying white meat is breast, dark meat is leg, wing thigh.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Carl says white is breast and wing, dark is thigh
- 37:34Speaker 1: and leg Tresa with the same answer. Randall says white
- 37:40Speaker 1: is breast and thigh. Dark is leg and wing. Garrett
- 37:45Speaker 1: says dark is leg, wing, thigh, white is breast. Brody
- 37:51Speaker 1: says white meat is wing and breast. Dark meat is
- 37:56Speaker 1: leg and thigh. Yanni with the same answer Bubbly Doug
- 38:01Speaker 1: saying the wing, thigh and leg are dark meat and
- 38:06Speaker 1: the breast is white meat. The correct answer is leg
- 38:11Speaker 1: and thigh are dark meat and breast and wing our
- 38:15Speaker 1: white meat. We had a few of you get that
- 38:19Speaker 1: one right, but I think Randall and Brody.
- 38:22Speaker 3: Is no change it from that.
- 38:26Speaker 1: I got it, Yanni, Brody, Tresa, Carl okay again, leg
- 38:32Speaker 1: and thigh are dark, breast and winger white. Similar to chickens,
- 38:35Speaker 1: turkeys spend far more time on the ground than in
- 38:38Speaker 1: the air. Because of this, their legs and thighs have
- 38:41Speaker 1: more myoglobin, which is a red protein that helps supply
- 38:45Speaker 1: oxygen to the muscles. And since turkey breasts and wings
- 38:49Speaker 1: are lesser used muscles, they have less myoglobin. So legs
- 38:53Speaker 1: and thighs are dark meat and breasts and wings are
- 38:56Speaker 1: white meat.
- 38:57Speaker 8: That is bullshit because when you get an all dark
- 38:59Speaker 8: meat eight piece meal at Rosars Bell.
- 39:06Speaker 1: We have two questions. Who remains in the game, and
- 39:10Speaker 1: I do it often.
- 39:11Speaker 6: It was according to Cook's Illustrated, not Rose Hours.
- 39:14Speaker 1: And I, you know Cook's Illustrated was who I signed
- 39:17Speaker 1: this to. But almost everybody on the internet agrees that
- 39:19Speaker 1: is how you categorize.
- 39:21Speaker 2: The connected wings, wings and breast leg I can't believe
- 39:25Speaker 2: that I did that.
- 39:26Speaker 11: Tresa, Garrett Chester and Yes, Bubbly Dug are no longer
- 39:31Speaker 11: in the running for the win, but Carl and Jannis
- 39:34Speaker 11: have five points apiece, Randall with that slip up, has six,
- 39:37Speaker 11: and in first place is Brody with seven.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Question nine, the topic is conservation. Part of this nineteen
- 39:47Speaker 1: to ninety Kevin Costner and Oscar winning film was shot
- 39:51Speaker 1: in bad Lands National Park. Brody and Randall pure to
- 39:56Speaker 1: be confident. Brody feels like this one's too easy. Part
- 40:00Speaker 1: of this nineteen ninety Kevin Costner Oscar winning film was
- 40:04Speaker 1: shot in bad Lands National Park.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I cannot believe I didn't think of it.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Okay, let us know when we can start making jokes.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know what jokes you want to make.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Dogs Doug has a blank board, so I feel like you're.
- 40:21Speaker 3: I didn't know that The Postman won an Oscar.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And it was shot in the bad Lands National Park.
- 40:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 40:32Speaker 1: You can make your your whatever jokes you're gonna have dog.
