Speaker 1: Let us pray. In the 600th year of Noah's life,
• 0:05
Speaker 1: in the second month, the 17th day of the month,
• 0:08
Speaker 1: the same day were all the fountains of the great
• 0:11
Speaker 1: deep broken up and the windows of heaven were opened.
• 0:16
Speaker 1: Genesis 7, 11. Dear Lord, give me the resolve to
• 0:22
Speaker 1: stand for what is right in a world that is
• 0:25
Speaker 1: tempted to do wrong. Give me ears to hear your
• 0:29
Speaker 1: instructions on how I'm supposed to build my life, my family,
• 0:34
Speaker 1: my business, and my relationships. Like Noah, I will build
• 0:40
Speaker 1: to the specifications that you've given me. I will not
• 0:45
Speaker 1: live a carbon copy when you've called me to build
• 0:48
Speaker 1: my life in originality. As I build on your promises,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: thank you in advance that when the storms come, I
• 0:57
Speaker 1: will be protected and safe until you place me on
• 1:01
Speaker 1: dry ground in my new promised land. Through the life
• 1:07
Speaker 1: of Noah, I am choosing to rest on the fact
• 1:11
Speaker 1: that even though evil abounds, I know that the promises
• 1:15
Speaker 1: of God still prevail. Therefore, I will not be afraid
• 1:20
Speaker 1: to stand for righteousness and to be different from the crowd.
• 1:25
Speaker 1: For I know that it is my difference that creates
• 1:29
Speaker 1: my rewards. Thank you for protection and for always guiding
• 1:34
Speaker 1: me to safety. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
• 1:40
Speaker 1: praying with us today. Continue your time with God by
• 1:44
Speaker 1: listening to today's Bible story, brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
• 1:56
Speaker 2: Noah and the Ark.
• 1:58
Speaker 3: Before this story, we were told the story of humanity's
• 2:02
Speaker 3: first bloodshed, Cain and Abel. Cain's hatred for God and
• 2:08
Speaker 3: jealousy of his brother led to the brutal murder of Abel.
• 2:12
Speaker 3: But evil did not stop with Cain. Evil continued its
• 2:16
Speaker 3: reign over the hearts of man. God, for the good
• 2:20
Speaker 3: of humanity, now has a plan.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: For purification and redemption. inspired by the book of Genesis.
• 2:29
Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
• 2:32
Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. As we begin today's story,
• 2:37
Speaker 4: we find that since Cain was cursed to wander the earth,
• 2:40
Speaker 4: humankind has multiplied, spreading out across the earth as God
• 2:44
Speaker 4: had intended. But something else is also growing, evil. It
• 2:49
Speaker 4: is a theme that's repeated throughout the Old Testament. Evil
• 2:53
Speaker 4: is reigning in the hearts of man. And that is
• 2:56
Speaker 4: not at all what God wants. Each new generation is
• 2:59
Speaker 4: growing more and more evil. Sin is spreading like wildfire
• 3:04
Speaker 4: until finally God has had enough. He cannot ignore the
• 3:07
Speaker 4: depravity any longer. God is grieved at what has become
• 3:12
Speaker 4: of humanity. He is ready to wipe mankind off the
• 3:15
Speaker 4: face of the earth. With a great flood, he's going
• 3:17
Speaker 4: to wash the earth clean of evil humanity. But there
• 3:21
Speaker 4: is one man who is different. Noah, we're told, was
• 3:25
Speaker 4: righteous in God's eyes. It must have been extremely challenging
• 3:30
Speaker 4: for Noah to live a righteous life in the midst
• 3:32
Speaker 4: of such rampant evil. Like Noah, you may often feel
• 3:36
Speaker 4: surrounded by evil in our world today, and like Noah,
• 3:40
Speaker 4: you must stand apart from those living to satisfy their
• 3:43
Speaker 4: own desires. As you listen today, think about how Noah
• 3:47
Speaker 4: and his family must have felt building this giant ark.
• 3:51
Speaker 4: They'd never before even seen rain or experienced a flood.
• 3:55
Speaker 4: Think about the immense amount of faith that's required. Imagine
• 3:58
Speaker 4: the fear in their hearts as they enter the ark
• 4:00
Speaker 4: and watch God close the door. But then watch as
• 4:04
Speaker 4: God carries them through the flood, protecting them from all
• 4:07
Speaker 4: harm and providing for them every step of the way.
• 4:11
Speaker 4: Let's listen now to the story about a man, an ark,
• 4:15
Speaker 4: a great flood, and God's plan of redemption for a
• 4:18
Speaker 4: world filled with evil.
• 4:24
  Speaker 2: Mankind multiplied.
• 4:27
Speaker 3: With more people filling the earth, more opportunities.
• 4:30
  Speaker 2: For evil abounded.
• 4:32
Speaker 3: Sons and daughters of Cain established corrupt kingdoms. Men treated
• 4:38
Speaker 3: women as property, and the twisted hearts of people cast
• 4:42
Speaker 3: the world into darkness. Even the lives of people began
• 4:46
Speaker 3: to shorten, and humans were dying.
• 4:49
Speaker 2: Earlier and earlier. Mighty men of old would steal away women,
• 4:54
  Speaker 2: rape them.
• 4:55
Speaker 3: These things God would not ignore. The actions of people
• 5:00
Speaker 3: at this time reflected a broken and corrupt heart. God
• 5:05
Speaker 3: saw this wickedness and regretted greatly the state of humanity.
• 5:10
Speaker 3: In sorrow he said, I will blot out man whom
• 5:14
Speaker 3: I have created from the face of the land. Yet
• 5:18
Speaker 3: out of this twisted generation there was one man named Noah,
• 5:23
Speaker 3: who was righteous in God's eyes. God said to Noah,
• 5:28
Speaker 3: I have determined to make an end of all flesh
• 5:31
Speaker 3: for the earth is filled with violence through them.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
• 5:39
Speaker 3: The wrath of God would descend in the form of
• 5:42
Speaker 3: rain and water from beneath the earth would come after.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: This was God's punishment. The flood was coming.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: God instructed Noah and his sons to build an ark,
• 5:56
Speaker 3: a mighty vessel that would preserve him, his wife, his sons,
• 6:00
Speaker 3: and their wives from the coming storm. Noah and his
• 6:04
Speaker 3: three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, built the ark exactly
• 6:10
Speaker 3: as God had instructed. He also instructed Noah that he should.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: Bring every animal with them in.
• 6:16
Speaker 3: Pairs and keep them alive in the ark. Even now
• 6:20
Speaker 3: God was making promises to.
• 6:22
  Speaker 2: Redeem the world.
• 6:25
Speaker 3: Noah fearfully and obediently followed every instruction that God gave him.
• 6:30
Speaker 2: When the time had come.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: For the flood to begin, God told Noah, Go into
• 6:35
Speaker 3: the ark and take your family with you. The rain
• 6:39
Speaker 3: will fall for forty days and forty nights. It will
• 6:43
Speaker 3: destroy the land and all those who live on it,
• 6:46
Speaker 3: but your family, and all the animals that come to
• 6:50
Speaker 3: you will be saved. When Noah's family and all the
• 6:54
Speaker 3: animals were secured in the ark, God shut the door.
• 6:59
Speaker 3: Seven days later, the rain began to fall, and the
• 7:03
Speaker 3: cleansing power of God opened. Water fell from the skies,
• 7:08
Speaker 3: and the springs of the earth burst open violently. The
• 7:12
Speaker 3: water rose, covering the mountains, and washing away all the
• 7:17
Speaker 3: corrupt and evil kingdoms built by the wickedness of mankind.
• 7:22
Speaker 3: God once breathed life into mankind, and now he took.
• 7:27
  Speaker 2: Their breath away.
• 7:29
Speaker 3: All was destroyed, all but those on the ark. After
• 7:34
Speaker 3: forty days had passed, the raining ceased, and the earth
• 7:38
Speaker 3: was still underwater for a hundred and fifty days. At
• 7:42
Speaker 3: the end of the hundred and fifty days, the water
• 7:45
Speaker 3: had receded enough for the ark to land on the
• 7:48
Speaker 3: side of a mountain. After four months had passed, Noah
• 7:53
Speaker 3: opened a window and sent out a raven to find
• 7:55
Speaker 3: dry land, but the raven never returned. Noah then sent
• 8:00
Speaker 3: out a dove to seek out dry land, and it
• 8:03
Speaker 3: returned because there was no dry land for it to
• 8:06
Speaker 3: perch on. Seven days later he sent the dove out again,
• 8:11
Speaker 3: and it came back with an olive leaf, meaning that
• 8:14
Speaker 3: the dove had found dry land and came back. Noah
• 8:18
Speaker 3: waited another seven days and sent the dove out again,
• 8:22
Speaker 3: hopeful that it would not return, meaning the land was
• 8:25
Speaker 3: ready to live on. This time it didn't return, so
• 8:29
Speaker 3: Noah knew that the water was not covering the earth anymore.
• 8:34
Speaker 3: After a month had passed, Noah opened the door and
• 8:37
Speaker 3: saw that the land was dry. God beckoned Noah to
• 8:41
Speaker 3: come out of the ark. So Noah brought his family
• 8:45
Speaker 3: and the animals out of the ark and offered a
• 8:48
Speaker 3: sacrifice to the Lord, just as Abel did before them.
• 8:52
Speaker 3: God was pleased to receive their offering and vowed to
• 8:56
Speaker 3: never flood the earth again. So God gave Noah permission
• 9:00
Speaker 3: to eat animals and plants so they might multiply the
• 9:04
Speaker 3: earth again. With the newness of life, God put a
• 9:08
Speaker 3: rainbow in the sky as a symbol of his promises.
• 9:12
Speaker 3: The story of evil does not end here, but the
• 9:15
Speaker 3: story of God and his passion to preserve and protect
• 9:19
Speaker 3: those he loves is still unfolding. Evil abounds, but the
• 9:24
Speaker 3: promises of God prevail still.
• 9:28
Speaker 4: As the story of Noah begins, we get a picture
• 9:31
Speaker 4: of just how bad things can and do get when
• 9:34
Speaker 4: mankind follows only their own heart. Just four chapters removed
• 9:39
Speaker 4: from when everything was perfect in the Garden of Eden,
• 9:42
Speaker 4: the world is in disarray, death, violence, abuse. God simply cannot,
• 9:49
Speaker 4: will not allow evil to go unchecked. He will not
• 9:53
Speaker 4: stand idly by and watch the world he created be
• 9:56
Speaker 4: destroyed by sinful men. There had to be a reckoning,
• 10:01
Speaker 4: a judgment, and we see here in today's story what
• 10:04
Speaker 4: God's righteous, holy anger can do. The truth is, we're
• 10:09
Speaker 4: all deserving of such a flood of judgment for the
• 10:12
Speaker 4: evil and sin in our own hearts. But God is
• 10:15
Speaker 4: full of mercy and compassion. And here in the story
• 10:18
Speaker 4: of Noah, we see that he is making a way
• 10:21
Speaker 4: for his ultimate plan of redemption to be carried out.
• 10:25
Speaker 4: We are not told much about Noah other than the
• 10:28
Speaker 4: most important thing, that he was walking in a right
• 10:31
Speaker 4: relationship with God. He was not perfect. He was also
• 10:36
Speaker 4: touched by the sin nature passed down from Adam, but
• 10:39
Speaker 4: he was righteous in the sight of God, righteous in
• 10:43
Speaker 4: God's eyes. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament says,
• 10:47
Speaker 4: tells us that it was Noah's faith in God that
• 10:49
Speaker 4: made him righteous. He took God at his word even
• 10:52
Speaker 4: when he had never seen what God told him was coming.
• 10:56
Speaker 4: Look at how God delivers the news to Noah. First
• 10:59
Speaker 4: the bad, then the good. Genesis 6, verses 17 through 19.
• 11:05
Speaker 4: Now behold, I myself am bringing the flood of water
• 11:08
Speaker 4: upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which there
• 11:12
Speaker 4: is the breath of life from under heaven. Everything that
• 11:14
Speaker 4: is on the earth shall perish. But I will establish
• 11:18
Speaker 4: my covenant with you, and you shall enter the ark, you,
• 11:22
Speaker 4: your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall
• 11:30
Speaker 4: bring two of every kind into the ark to keep
• 11:33
Speaker 4: them alive with you. God made a covenant, a promise
• 11:37
Speaker 4: with Noah. He and his family would be safe, along
• 11:41
Speaker 4: with the animals that were on the ark. And through
• 11:44
Speaker 4: Noah's family, God was going to save a remnant of
• 11:47
Speaker 4: humanity to start afresh and even the animal world as well.
• 11:52
Speaker 4: But first came the flood. For 40 days it rained.
• 11:57
Speaker 4: Waters rose and destroyed every person not on the ark,
• 12:00
Speaker 4: just as God had said. But it wasn't over. Noah
• 12:03
Speaker 4: and his family stayed on the ark for a full year.
• 12:08
Speaker 4: God provided rescue for Noah and his family during the
• 12:11
Speaker 4: flood and provision far after the flood. Isn't that the
• 12:15
Speaker 4: way we see it in our lives as well? God
• 12:18
Speaker 4: is with us during the storm and through the storm.
• 12:21
Speaker 4: He stays with us, providing for our every need through
• 12:24
Speaker 4: the aftermath of the storm. When it was finally safe
• 12:28
Speaker 4: to step outside, what did Noah do? He offered a
• 12:31
Speaker 4: sacrifice to God, worshiping him, thanking him for his protection,
• 12:36
Speaker 4: his presence, his provision, and his mercy and grace. And
• 12:41
Speaker 4: God gave Noah a beautiful sign of his covenant. a
• 12:44
Speaker 4: rainbow in the sky. The story of Noah is a
• 12:48
Speaker 4: powerful reminder that God, even in his anger, loves his
• 12:52
Speaker 4: children and offers salvation and new life to those who
• 12:56
Speaker 4: put their faith and trust in him. This was a
• 12:59
Speaker 4: fresh start, but sadly not the end of sin and evil.
• 13:03
Speaker 4: That would take a much bigger act, a sacrifice only
• 13:06
Speaker 4: God himself can offer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for
• 13:11
Speaker 4: this story that shows the consuming power of your righteousness
• 13:15
Speaker 4: and justice for sin. Thank you also for what it
• 13:18
Speaker 4: shows us about your loving heart to save those who
• 13:22
Speaker 4: trust in you. Help us, as Noah did, to have
• 13:25
Speaker 4: faith in you through Jesus Christ and follow you wherever
• 13:30
Speaker 4: you lead. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's Bible
