- 0:07Welcome to the Duckfellas Podcast, your weekly dose of waterfowl wisdom,
- 0:12blind banter, and hunting stories that might just be mostly true.
- 0:17Hosted by Tyler, Cade, and fucking Austin.
- 0:21Three fellas chasing feathers and good times.
- 0:25Do us a favor, hit that like button or subscribe wherever you're listening in at today.
- 0:35Say something. I was waiting on you They want to hear something They want to
- 0:41hear you talk That's a lie,
- 0:45Well, we're back. Episode 8.
- 0:49Weekend? How was y'all's weekend? Even though I think I hung out with you guys
- 0:53all weekend, which was terrible.
- 0:55Yeah, I spent way too much time together. You were with us all weekend. I don't know why.
- 1:00Yeah. Well, hunting this weekend was adventurous, to say the least.
- 1:07Not good. Not good. No. I mean, we killed one bird and acquired two bands.
- 1:15We killed one with a gun. I killed one with my hands.
- 1:19Yeah. That one doesn't really count, though. It had the bird flu. Yeah, allegedly.
- 1:24I don't know. He looked pretty lively whenever you went to kill him.
- 1:27Oh, yeah. Yeah, that thing beat the living shit out of me.
- 1:32The three decoys that he bounced off of floating down, though.
- 1:37Poor guy. He was going through it. It's, you know, it really sucks to see,
- 1:41but we're, looks like we're starting to have a bad case of the bird flu hit
- 1:45us for in the honkers at least.
- 1:47Yeah, it's a lot different. You see that shit on Facebook and it's just kind
- 1:50of like, yeah, it happens.
- 1:52And then when one of your riverbank spots are just fucking stacked up with dead
- 1:56geese, it's like, oh shit.
- 1:58Yeah. I mean, I've seen it, I've seen it up north on snow geese a lot,
- 2:04but this is the first year I've really seen it hit the honkers hard personally.
- 2:09And it don't look good. No, there was about eight or ten laying just on the
- 2:14sandbar. And then we watched another four or five float down the river.
- 2:18Easy. And then, like today, I was driving around the lake. And I seen a good
- 2:22handful of birds dead or just bobbing their head. You know, they could tell they had that bird flu.
- 2:29That shit's hard on them. It's no good. Hopefully that gets figured out.
- 2:33I mean, nature's going to run its course on that.
- 2:35Nothing we can do about it, really, that I can know of.
- 2:38So this week, we're going to talk about whatever pops up. We don't have any
- 2:43topics. We got one, I guess. Pookie picked one.
- 2:46We're going to talk a little bit of stories and then just kind of bullshit.
- 2:50I mean, we're kind of saving some good topics here as we come along.
- 2:54We got some pretty juicy ones coming up, but this week's going to be kind of
- 2:58laid back as we come into the holidays here and really get our goose season going again.
- 3:02We kind of, nobody hunted last week. It was nothing was really open.
- 3:05So we'll just kind of run through some stories here and Pookie can lead story time.
- 3:12Why does it always got to be me that leads story time? One time you have to lead something.
- 3:18Because that's the only time you talk is story time. Yeah, no, you're right.
- 3:23I wish we were live streaming this or video recording it because Pookie shows
- 3:30stories with his coloring book and it's pretty fun.
- 3:33We should do one. I mean, it'd have to be like a two-hour thing because obviously
- 3:38not everybody gets on the internet at the same time.
- 3:40But it'd be cool to do like a Q&A live. That would be fun.
- 3:45It would be a good topic to do a Q&A to as well with the permission stories and whatnot too.
- 3:53I'm sure we would hear some pretty funny ones.
- 3:59Robots. Robots are taking over Pokey's house. Oh, no, not the internet.
- 4:05No, you're good now. You just had a robotic moment. You're back.
- 4:09No, I think we're getting close to maybe doing some live streaming ones or at
- 4:13least posting videos of the podcast.
- 4:16We're lacking one camera here to get the quality up a little bit on one person's camera.
- 4:21I mean, I'm not going to point fingers or anything, but I do believe it's one of us.
- 4:26Yeah, why would you do that? Everybody that knows me knows that I have a camera. Right.
- 4:32And I think, didn't you just buy one, Tyler? I'm pretty sure you just got one.
- 4:37You know, I do believe I acquired one recently.
- 4:41I'll confirm. Yeah, no, I'll go ahead and confirm that. Yeah, acquired one.
- 4:46That leaves one motherfucker. He's kind of a weird individual, though.
- 4:52Oh, he's being a robot again. Yeah, no, he's glitching all over the place here. Oh, boy.
- 4:58I think he's got the bird flu.
- 5:01If you see my head start bobbing and i'm doing circles over here send help we'll
- 5:06send kate over to wring your neck no he's not banded yeah i'm not banded so
- 5:12kate wants nothing to do with me,
- 5:14nobody is branded that is fair
- 5:17so you're gonna lead story time or what honestly
- 5:21though before you get started what are the odds of that that the one goose that
- 5:24floats down our side of the bank floats right the
- 5:27decoys and i'm like i can't not check it pick it
- 5:30up sure shit banded sure shit waxed
- 5:33me 15 times right in the forehead with its wings yeah no
- 5:37that was i didn't really believe you but the excitement you had right away i
- 5:42was like it's definitely banded and then just to find another one walking up
- 5:48yeah where was that one from by the way canada.
- 5:56The last one we checked on the way back to the truck was freaking stainless
- 6:00band from canada can't make that up you really can't i really want to know how
- 6:06many more down there are banded that have floated down since then,
- 6:11I would bet there's definitely a handful on that river dead right now that are banded. Yeah.
- 6:18I might run down there tomorrow after work and check it out. See if there's any ones.
- 6:23Anybody listening? He said might. That definitely means he won't. Oh, bullshit.
- 6:31Oh, I love that it's just a nonstop roast session in our group.
- 6:35It's my favorite. Really? It really has to be. Nobody's ever safe.
- 6:41I think that's what keeps it interesting. Well, yeah.
- 6:45All right, Pookie. Story time. Let's go. All right. Let's roll into it.
- 6:50Permission stories and strategies are a lone topic for the week.
- 6:54I'm actually not mad about leading this one because I get to ask you guys the questions.
- 6:59You guys have been doing this a lot longer than I have, Tyler especially.
- 7:04I thought we were telling stories, not asking questions. No.
- 7:07Yeah, no. There should be no questions asked here. You're not allowed to ask
- 7:09a question. It's all statements, bud.
- 7:11This is my topic. I decide how it goes.
- 7:15Wow. No, especially with Tyler, has hunted many different states like we've
- 7:21alluded to over the last couple episodes and whatnot.
- 7:24I would love to hear what is the hardest state that you've hunted in to acquire
- 7:32permission on private fields.
- 7:36The hardest? I mean, nowadays, I would say North Dakota.
- 7:41But you go back pre-COVID, I would say North Dakota was one of the easiest to
- 7:47get access and permission.
- 7:50Before COVID, I would say probably Kansas was probably the hardest one to get
- 7:56permission for private ground.
- 7:57There's just a lot of guides, outfitters down there.
- 8:01But there's a lot of bigger farmers. Down there, it's a lot of cattle farmers,
- 8:05so they own a shitload of ground for pasture. And it's really hard to find the
- 8:10owner itself and get permission from them.
- 8:12The weird thing about North Dakota, too, is like, I've talked to,
- 8:16I think, five or six different people now, and they're like,
- 8:18oh, well, when we went, it wasn't that hard to get it. It's like, when did you go?
- 8:23Oh, beginning of October. I'm like, well...
- 8:27That explains it. There ain't nobody up there yet. I mean, for the guides-wise,
- 8:32there's just not the outfitters there. Right.
- 8:35Well, it really differed from one side of the state to the other.
- 8:39When we were out there, it was incredibly hard.
- 8:44And then as we moved, I would say probably further away from the guides and
- 8:50whatnot, we were able to get back on birds and acquire at least a handful of permission.
- 8:58Yeah I would agree with that for sure I mean it still wasn't easy but I mean
- 9:03the success rate went up by a substantial amount compared to the other part of the state.
- 9:10Absolutely and what about any funny encounters with farmers or landowners you
- 9:17guys have had spit it out kid I haven't really had any funny ones I mean I've had some,
- 9:24very stern notes very stern nose I've had some very stern get the fuck off my
- 9:29doorsteps nothing nothing too crazy though i never had a gun pointed at me or
- 9:34anything anything crazy like that some of the shit that you hear but yeah i've
- 9:38had my fair share of hell knows and get the fuck out of here's,
- 9:44yeah the hell knows make it interesting but honestly the the ones that are just
- 9:49jacked that you ask them and excited about it really make up for the the nose
- 9:54that you get told or told to get off their property.
- 9:56They don't let anybody hunt no more because Joe Blow rutted up his field 20
- 10:01years ago and destroyed it.
- 10:03The one that sticks out to me was in
- 10:07North Dakota when we had flagged down a farmer because we were trying to locate
- 10:12contact information for a different farmer and it was almost like he got offended
- 10:18that we didn't want to hunt his fields and we're asking him for contact information for another guy.
- 10:24We're like no like we would love to hunt your field as well too and.
- 10:30Rockmire and Tyler got roped into this two, two and a half hour long tour guide of this guy's property.
- 10:38Like, yeah, this is where people have hunted in the past. This is where they've
- 10:41had success. Like do whatever you want. Kill them all.
- 10:46Yeah. He was definitely one of the nicest landowners I've ever came across for
- 10:51just, I mean, literally telling us everything about everybody's hunt they've ever had there.
- 10:57And also told us his entire life story that afternoon while we were sitting
- 11:01there talking to him about where we were going to hunt,
- 11:03and he was showing us how to access the field the easiest and it was easily
- 11:08a two-hour event just sitting there and listening to that old boy tell his stories.
- 11:12I mean, he had lots of stories.
- 11:14Should have got his number and brought him on the pod, bud.
- 11:17We do have his number. Call him up. Get him on.
- 11:21Yeah, yeah. Yeah, this would be probably a three to six hour episode if we got him on here.
- 11:27That was awesome, but I don't know if we could contain him for that short of an episode.
- 11:34Yeah. And kind of the same thing, like you were saying, Austin,
- 11:37some of our, which we have never hunted it.
- 11:40I have before, but we as a group haven't hunted it. But a guy with a shitload
- 11:44of land around here and some good access to the river.
- 11:47One of the farmers that I talked to a couple of years ago, they were neighbors
- 11:50and he's like, Hey, tell him to go hunt my shit. He can hunt whatever he wants.
- 11:54And it's like just that kind of cool word of mouth is, is hard to find. And it's really cool.
- 12:01Yeah and i mean we've talked about it in the past too
- 12:04about when like on the strategy side of it be willing
- 12:07to like like i've gone out and like helped
- 12:11farmers and it like even if they say no but
- 12:14then they still want to chat with you that generally leaves the option open
- 12:18that hey you might be able to hunt this if you stop by throughout the year and
- 12:22offer up your helping hand with whatever around the farm right you might be
- 12:28able to get permission then yeah for For sure. That goes a long ways.
- 12:31Like persistence is huge when you're trying to secure a no answer,
- 12:37especially like you said, if they sit there and talk to you for another half
- 12:39hour, you can get it at some point.
- 12:42Yeah. Might not be right away, but within a couple of years, you can probably get it.
- 12:46And I've been told on land before and then, you know, every year going by and
- 12:51asking or talking to them. And then a couple of years later,
- 12:53you get permission for it.
- 12:55Yeah. And they give you sole permission. Like you're the only guy that has it.
- 12:58That's the best they're loyal
- 13:01i love it we do have a lot
- 13:04of old boys out here that are running like solo single single man operations
- 13:10with their farm too so like you sit there and chat with them help them out do
- 13:15whatever like they remember that stuff and they're used like in my experience
- 13:19they've been really good about giving permission after that.
- 13:25For sure. As far as strategies, like you were mentioning, Tyler,
- 13:29you were talking about like standing there and talking to people.
- 13:33Do you, I guess, have you ever even thought about what works out better talking
- 13:40to people in person, talking to people over the phone?
- 13:44Have you ever like really realized or even thought about your rate of getting
- 13:50permission in either of those two categories?
- 13:55Honestly, I've always been an in-person type person to go talk to them.
- 13:59But anymore, I've had almost as much success just calling them.
- 14:04If I have their number or if I acquire their number off of Google,
- 14:09it's really 50-50 nowadays because people don't, not as many people nowadays
- 14:14care about the personal experience of meeting someone face-to-face to give them permission.
- 14:19I mean, if they're going to let people hunt it, they're going to let anybody
- 14:21hunt it half the time nowadays.
- 14:25I'd say it does go a longer ways in the long run, meeting them in person and talking to them, but,
- 14:32it's really, I think it's really even nowadays for getting permission,
- 14:34whether you're in person or not.
- 14:36I think you have a better chance at long-term, like keeping the permission or being told no.
- 14:42And then maybe getting it later down the road, if you go and talk to him in person.
- 14:46Oddly enough, dude, like if you can't find a phone number or,
- 14:51I mean, it's hard with Onyx not to find an address, but sometimes you knock
- 14:54on the door, people don't answer, they're not home or whatever.
- 14:57Dude, if you can find someone that's a relative on Facebook,
- 15:00you just shoot them a message, nine times out of ten, they're going to send
- 15:03you the phone number that you need.
- 15:05It's freaking crazy. Like, it's really not that hard to get in contact with people.
- 15:10No, that, I've done that route before, too, and gotten access or gotten told no. Yeah, same.
- 15:20You get excited because I message you back and give you the contact you need,
- 15:24and then they're like, no, you're not hunting my ground. Oh,
- 15:26okay. My bad. So I won't call again.
- 15:29Yeah, that happened to me last year on that On behind Austin's house.
- 15:35Got all excited, called the guy. He's like, no, I like watching them.
- 15:39I'm like, all right, well, can I at least come down and take some pictures?
- 15:42And he's like, oh, hell yeah.
- 15:43Perfect. I just want to take some pictures.
- 15:48That's the worst thing. No decoys, no nothing, just laying on the bank of the
- 15:52pond, and these geese are just like 10 feet in front of you. It's like, oh.
- 15:57At 10 feet, we all know that I'd miss, but. Yeah, you don't stand a chance.
- 16:01I'd just stand up and boogoo, boogoo, boogoo, shoot him on the way out.
- 16:05I have uh definitely called a couple farmers and like
- 16:09you could tell that they're they were busy while i was on
- 16:11the phone with them they're like well why why
- 16:14don't you just stop out here and talk to me real quick and
- 16:17it's like yeah gladly i would so much rather me
- 16:20personally i would so much rather talk to somebody in person anyways
- 16:24but then you end up following them around their
- 16:27farm doing whatever for the next half hour
- 16:31to an hour whatever but i don't i don't
- 16:34mind it it's i mean it's kind of fascinating to me kind of
- 16:36cool to see all their setups and then you end up hearing stories from them about
- 16:40how their farm came to whether it was been generational farm so on and so forth
- 16:46and like you never know i mean just like you guys were saying like you get information
- 16:52about neighbors that could possibly let you hunt and then,
- 16:56Just continued success with clinician, I feel like, when you end up talking to people on the phone.
- 17:03Yeah, and I try to make a point to make sure I have plenty of time to where
- 17:08I don't have to hurry up and try and rush out of there.
- 17:10If I'm going to talk to a landowner about hunting his ground,
- 17:13because you just, you never know how long you're going to be stuck there talking to that guy.
- 17:17Which, sometimes it's the most enjoyable thing you've done all day,
- 17:19sitting there talking to him and hearing their life stories and all about their
- 17:22farm history and everything else.
- 17:25Yeah it's it's always cool shit but like you said you gotta you gotta
- 17:28plan that out right and not get stuck out there till
- 17:31freaking seven o'clock at night sometimes every time i've tried to like go there
- 17:36quick and i got i need to go scout somewhere else i'm going to talk to this
- 17:39landowner it's always somebody that wants to sit there and talk for 30 40 minutes
- 17:44at least on the short side and then it's dark and you're like well shit but at least we got the field,
- 17:51yeah on me personally on days that I'm trying to acquire permission I just don't
- 17:57even plan on scouting that days I solely plan on going and talking to landowners
- 18:01and and what not too because,
- 18:04along with the farmers I'm a talker so like it's nothing for me to continue
- 18:09a conversation like well past they're probably like alright dude like I already
- 18:14gave you permission like you can leave I'm just interested,
- 18:18always doing that Yeah, but even when you plan on scouting, you don't go scouting.
- 18:22So what does that matter?
- 18:24That's true. I try not to. I try to do the best I can at getting out of all
- 18:29work that involves helping you.
- 18:33Andy says that he's a talker, but this is the most talkative episode he's had on our podcast.
- 18:39Yeah, I think he's beating his words count by a lot right now.
- 18:43It's hard to get words in with you guys.
- 18:45Oh, bullshit. Get out of here with that guy. You guys talk a lot. It is what it is.
- 18:51Don't be mad about it. Just because I called you out doesn't make it any less true.
- 18:57Wow. Pookie's choosing the wireless sign. Yeah, no, he's attacking.
- 19:02He's no longer on the defense. He's on the attack side. Oh, my gosh.
- 19:06Relax. Now you guys are being dramatic.
- 19:09He must have listened to the Acorn Cow podcast for like two days straight.
- 19:12He did. Got my courage really built up.
- 19:18Speaking of that, we'll touch on that real quick.
- 19:21We did do a podcast. We recorded it a few weeks ago, and it just got released,
- 19:27what was it, this past week?
- 19:30We did a podcast with Living Legends Outdoors. Kuki can tell everybody a little
- 19:35bit about that since he kind of lined up the whole gig.
- 19:39Yeah, so the guys that are involved with Living Legends Outdoors,
- 19:43I've known all of them personally, grew up with
- 19:46almost all of them all the way
- 19:49through grade school and such really good group of guys uh that
- 19:52they primarily only do deer and turkey
- 19:56hunting but they wanted to do a collaboration with this one night uh just so
- 20:01happened that tyler had to go back to work so he was the only one there not
- 20:05in person we were still able to get him on the podcast uh just back from michigan
- 20:10but Cade and I went over there, had a couple beers with those guys.
- 20:14If I'm not mistaking, I believe that the podcast went just over two hours long.
- 20:22Yeah, it was two hours and three minutes,
- 20:24I think. It took a while to get through it. But it was a good one.
- 20:27It was a lot of fun, and there is no shortage of shit talking in that podcast.
- 20:34It is constant for those two hours. It's just, I mean, what you would imagine
- 20:39a group of waterfowl hunters going back and forth with a group of guys that
- 20:43have never done any of it before.
- 20:46So I thought that they had a lot of really good questions for us.
- 20:50I was really informative to their community that might not necessarily do a
- 20:56whole bunch of what we talk about a week in and week out.
- 21:01Yeah, for sure. We definitely need to do another one that Tyler is in person.
- 21:06You could tell that Tyler wanted to talk shit, but he couldn't read the room
- 21:10because he wasn't there.
- 21:12Yeah, it really sucked on that part. And I feel like there's a lot more that
- 21:15we can touch on between the two groups too.
- 21:19I mean, we touched on quite a bit, but there's a lot that, like after listening
- 21:23to it again, there's a lot of questions that I have that didn't dawn on me at that point in time.
- 21:28You know I thought about that and I kind of wish we would have reached out to
- 21:32him a little sooner but I was like man you know being this week we didn't have
- 21:34a whole lot to talk about on the agenda we should have reached out and seen what they were doing,
- 21:39Sunday night or Monday night which we're recording this on a Monday night unlike
- 21:42normal I guess normally lately we're just all over the place,
- 21:47we don't have a normal day anymore no that's out the window I think we were
- 21:51all a little too tired last night to attempt it I know I was.
- 21:57But I was asleep and a shortage of shooting birds this week and I think took
- 22:02it out of us that was terrible let's quit talking about that,
- 22:08But no, I was, I wish we would have got out with them and seen if they wanted to record.
- 22:13We could have went to them and just brought our stuff and used,
- 22:17hooked their mixer into the computer and record it all.
- 22:19But it would be fun while I'm home, at least. I'd like to go over there and
- 22:23meet them in person and bullshit one night.
- 22:27Oh, I'd imagine we'd have to get a DD to come home.
- 22:31But if we drank some beers with those boys, the amount of shit that would get talked would be insane.
- 22:38I'm down Ellie can go and she can be the DD,
- 22:43We had alluded to,
- 22:47hopefully getting those guys out on a goose hunt with us still this winter too
- 22:51so if we're able to get that opportunity I think that would be a good thing
- 22:56to do and then a good thing to continue our collaboration with those guys and
- 23:01get them on you know that we'd have to do a gentleman's hunt with those guys and,
- 23:07if they miss a shot they're going to hear it.
- 23:11Oh, as much shit as they were talking absolutely they would never hear the end of that.
- 23:16Yeah, if they actually do decide to come, which they said they would after January
- 23:2010th when deer season's done, if they actually do, I'll dedicate my time to
- 23:25be the video guy and then there's no, oh I didn't miss that shot. Yeah.
- 23:32We need to find a, we need to keep a juicy field lined up for when they want
- 23:36to go, just so we can know we can land geese and just watch them miss.
- 23:42I'd miss them, too, if they were landed, just to be fair. Unless they land at
- 23:4660, you should be good then. Yeah, then I'm money. Yeah.
- 23:50Bold and birds. In my defense, I did shoot one at, like, 10 feet off my gun
- 23:55barrel this weekend. I was proud of myself.
- 23:57Yeah, no, poor Daniel. You're pleasantly surprised. Yeah, poor Daniel.
- 24:03The guy just wanted to kill his first confirmed goose kill, and he whiffed on
- 24:08his first. Did he shoot twice?
- 24:10He shot twice, and then I was like, all right, this thing is not leaving.
- 24:14Yeah. I can't believe, I still can't believe he missed that.
- 24:17I mean, it was, it was literally 10 yards on the water. Yeah.
- 24:21In his defense, he said he was tucked down, like had his head tucked.
- 24:25He didn't even see it laying. He didn't, he's straight up said,
- 24:28he's like, when you said shoot him, I was just like looking in the decoys and
- 24:31I couldn't pick out where he was.
- 24:32And I'm like, dude, he was right in front of you.
- 24:37It happens. We'll get him one.
- 24:41That one floating away looked really good, too.
- 24:47I cut deep. Yeah. $50 just floating down the river. It had the bird flu. It's fine.
- 24:55What? It had the bird flu. It's fine. No, we needed that one because it matches
- 25:00half the other geese out there.
- 25:03That is true. I mean, back to this weekend hunting.
- 25:07Sunday was that was a lot of ice we broke Sunday was an absolute shit show,
- 25:13speaking of that I need to go get that Milwaukee battery out of the boat or
- 25:17out of my truck and charge that for tomorrow,
- 25:19yeah yeah you do once we're done here try to remind me before we get off of
- 25:24here but I'll make sure I get that done so we can cut some willows hey don't
- 25:29forget to go get your Milwaukee battery and charge it,
- 25:33oh god put your coloring pencils down and listen to what I'm saying here.
- 25:38But I finally learned how to cut her inside the lines. I'm calling bullshit
- 25:43on that one. Yeah, prove it.
- 25:46I do have an extra Milwaukee charger I can give you if you want one for the
- 25:51boat. I've got like seven of them.
- 25:53I do need to fill up the generator tomorrow too. And you still can't charge
- 25:55the battery. What the hell? No, I know.
- 25:58I got some charge. They're just in my truck.
- 26:01It's a good spot. In my personal truck that's at the Chevy dealership right now.
- 26:06That's tough. I have like three of them in here if you need. a couple for the week.
- 26:10I've got a couple. I think I took batteries out of it too. I think I got one
- 26:14on my half inch impact that's in the shop and I've got a couple other ones.
- 26:18I don't have any excuses for why we didn't have a charged battery.
- 26:21I'm just saying I didn't have a charged battery on Sunday.
- 26:24I'm glad you said that because I was about to say it for you.
- 26:27Yeah, no, I seen the look in your eyes and I'm like, I'm getting ready to get fucked here.
- 26:31Plenty of mistakes were made on Sunday. Yeah, I definitely thought we were going
- 26:36to be stranded for a little bit.
- 26:38That was, whenever that ice broke, or it didn't even break, it just settled
- 26:43on the sandbar, and we were on top of it, and we could not move.
- 26:48I was like, are we going to walk back to the boat ramp, or what are we going to do now?
- 26:53Yeah, because there was no shot there's anybody that, for one,
- 26:57would have the time on a Sunday, or for two, had a boat that would make it to us.
- 27:02That was the first thing that went through my mind, was like,
- 27:04who has a boat that can get here? Like, I don't even want my little boat coming out here in this.
- 27:08And that's pretty much about the biggest boat that anybody that we know has.
- 27:13Yeah. Yeah, no, and we were the only ones dumb enough to try it.
- 27:18Yeah, I mean, we made it to a spot. We did not make it to the final destination that we had chosen.
- 27:26No, neither one of them. We picked two holes and we didn't make it to either of them.
- 27:30We made it halfway to the second one. We did. We made it halfway to the first one, too.
- 27:35Yeah. I think we maybe could have made it there if I knew for sure where that channel was.
- 27:42But, I mean, the ice was breaking. It just, it didn't, it couldn't,
- 27:45it couldn't go down far enough to break it. I mean, it was only like,
- 27:48what, eight inches deep right there? Yeah.
- 27:51Yeah, the rest of this week will really change stuff up with these abnormally
- 27:55warm temperatures that we're getting for Christmas time.
- 27:59So it'll be interesting to see what the birds do and how much they spread out
- 28:03with more open water coming to us.
- 28:07I'm really excited for tomorrow because, I mean, the ice stalled a lot today.
- 28:13You could see all the skim water on top of the ice today, and then you could
- 28:16just see it was like looking rotten.
- 28:19So with it being, I think, 50-something tomorrow again, I can't remember,
- 28:23it's 45 or 50. Yeah, I think so, somewhere around there.
- 28:27But when temperatures are that high and you have sunshine, which we didn't have
- 28:31sunshine today, and we still got quite a bit of ice melting,
- 28:34I believe, today, it's going to go fast.
- 28:37I wish we had more wind all week to really rip it open, but we'll just take what we get.
- 28:43Hopefully that sun shines. Hmm Shine bright like a diamond.
- 28:50Yeah we'll see I'm not ready for the work that We're gonna have to put in to
- 28:54break More ice tomorrow with just Two guys,
- 28:59Yeah no I never heard back From the other guy invited so I'm pretty sure it's
- 29:03gonna be just me and you Since Cade thinks he has to go to work Or something,
- 29:08Somebody's gotta do it We know you're not going to.
- 29:12Absolutely not. To be honest, though, I mean, we haven't had a lot of hunts
- 29:18this year that were just me and you.
- 29:20I mean, we usually picked up a third guy, like comparing it to the year before
- 29:25where we did like, what, like 19 or 17 hunts.
- 29:29Just me and you, like we were nowhere close to that this year.
- 29:33Do we even have a hunt just me and you this year yet? Yeah, I'm trying to think.
- 29:37I don't know, between a couple hunts that we brought my cousin on and then Newendorp
- 29:43here and there on random days, I really don't think that it was just me and
- 29:48you. Yeah, I think we hunted.
- 29:51One or maybe two. I know there was for sure one day. I can't put a finger on
- 29:55exactly what date it was and what time.
- 29:57Well, you should be able to if you're going to spit that out.
- 30:00I know for sure there was one day that you guys went out by yourself.
- 30:03Maybe. I can't remember it, but I'm not saying it's not true.
- 30:08Just saying I don't believe you. If I remember right, it was exactly like every
- 30:13other time that you and Austin go out and you shot like shit.
- 30:15Because I remember calling you and giving you a hard time about it and you were still pissed. Whoa.
- 30:21Where did that come from? Yeah, who is this guy?
- 30:26No, because I I'm pretty sure we had Zach with us that day that you're even
- 30:31talking about. Oh, there was more than one day you shot like shit. Come on.
- 30:36There was like three or four days like a stretch in a row that I shot like trash,
- 30:41you did have like just one really bad week it was awful we all have it, it happens,
- 30:50not Austin, he's perfect no, I wish I wish he just sucks all the time damn straight,
- 31:01Oh, don't you guys worry. I'll be there.
- 31:06Nobody's worried about you being at the sucking party. Don't worry.
- 31:10Sick. All right. I didn't even say anything mean to you.
- 31:15I mean, talked about you getting the boat stuck.
- 31:20You being super old. Like, I haven't even, I haven't brought anything out. And then here you are.
- 31:26Somebody's got to start it. I thought this week was going to be different.
- 31:30You guys were kind of laying off me there for a while.
- 31:33No, it's not going to be different. I can promise you. It's the same every week.
- 31:39Got to give the people what they want. I'm just counting how many weeks that
- 31:45you say my name and a different variation for the start of the podcast.
- 31:50It's all the time, bud.
- 31:54What did I even say today? I don't even know how I started it today with what I said to your name.
- 31:59You added the f-word in front of it on this list what if I told you that my
- 32:06grandma listens to this how would that make you feel she'd probably be jacked
- 32:10about that she's heard your mouth whoa,
- 32:15she'd probably think that you're a badass because I've got fucking Austin here,
- 32:21I can assure you guys that if Linda listened to this she would not be impressed with us.
- 32:30Block it from her yeah yeah i don't even i i mean i didn't mess up i wore our
- 32:37sweatshirt to my family christmas this weekend got a ton of questions about it but i'm like,
- 32:43i you know i don't know if you guys are gonna like what we have to say on here it's fine it'll puff,
- 32:53So we never did make our plans for tomorrow yet, Austin. What time do you want
- 32:57me to pick you up for our date?
- 33:00I'd say at the latest 2 o'clock.
- 33:03PM? Yeah, no, that makes sense. Yeah. No, AM for sure. No. Negative.
- 33:08Yeah, if you think that I'm getting up that early to do this,
- 33:12you're wrong. You just hop by yourself.
- 33:17Cade can hum by himself, because I'm not going out in two in the morning either.
- 33:21I'm not either tomorrow. No. No, I think if you pick me up at five,
- 33:26that'll give us plenty of time to make our way to at least a couple of the spots
- 33:32that we talked about earlier today, get a whole pro coat and get set brushed in and go from there.
- 33:39Yeah, because, I mean, what time did the geese really start flying somewhat decent yesterday?
- 33:45About eight o'clock. Was it 8? Yeah. It was like 8 or 8.30. Yeah. Dang.
- 33:53It was, I mean, it was, they were flying before we got stuck on that piece of
- 33:58ice. Mm-hmm. The first one.
- 34:01I think we left the ramp at 6.30, and it took us, I bet you,
- 34:05every bit of 45 minutes to get down to where we got stuck at.
- 34:08Oh, yeah. Yeah, so.
- 34:11It shouldn't take us long to get to where we got to.
- 34:16I mean, that should be mostly open or pretty thin ice.
- 34:21No, I'm thinking probably 10-15 minutes to get to where we had to turn around
- 34:26yesterday, but then we'd probably have another half hour, 40 minutes to get
- 34:32to where we were talking about today.
- 34:34And then, I mean, at least we'll be in wadeable water, so clearing the hole
- 34:40might be a little easier, hopefully.
- 34:42It'd be a lot easier if we can get out of the boat and walk once I go around
- 34:47a couple times in the boat and break the edge,
- 34:49we're golden yeah I was gonna say there's no hopefully to it it's gonna be a
- 34:54lot easier yeah well don't forget we have to sit or him getting stuck in the ice again,
- 35:01happens one time at band camp. I don't know what that was, but that was not a mic drop. Oh, yeah.
- 35:08Yeah, I'm done with your shit tonight. No, you're not.
- 35:13But I think as long as we are set up at least somewhere around 8 o'clock ready
- 35:18to go, I mean, shoot our six, don't burn it down quite yet, get the heck out of there.
- 35:25Dude, we could never burn it down, just two of us. Unless we're shooting into groups like 50.
- 35:29I mean, we'd have to kill one, out of every group of 50 to burn it down.
- 35:34It's been done before. I mean, we have definitely shot into big groups and done stuff like that.
- 35:42Usually the only time we shoot in big groups of geese though is when we have
- 35:45a big group of guys. Like four, five plus.
- 35:48No, I'm hoping... We can actually rain like eight or ten of them out.
- 35:51Yeah, that's really cool. I like doing that.
- 35:55I would say hopefully a group of six comes in in the morning and we kill all
- 35:58six, but I think Pokey would probably kill maybe one and, That'd be about all he got.
- 36:03Yeah, you're probably right. But if that did happen, that would be super sweet.
- 36:08I hope we kill like three out of the six we kill tomorrow. I hope our band didn't.
- 36:14We just send all the pictures to Cade while he's push the dirt, scoop the dirt.
- 36:21I'm not going. You guys are not going to shoot a band. Just get that out of
- 36:24your head. That's fair. Yeah, he's probably right. You're not even going to
- 36:27see a band unless I'm there.
- 36:29Yeah, but, you know, if we do kill him tomorrow and we do send pictures to Cade,
- 36:35you know, who's not going Wednesday, and also who will be probably going Wednesday...
- 36:42Austin's not going to go Wednesday. Why? I get off at 5 o'clock in the morning
- 36:47and have to be back at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.
- 36:49Like, that's not happening. There's no way. What's the problem? Yeah, sleep.
- 36:56Who the fuck needs sleep? Me. I need sleep.
- 37:01You did a plenty fine job yesterday. I did, yeah.
- 37:06Yeah, you were sawing some serious logs in that boat. Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:10My favorite thing to do in there when we're not shooting stuff.
- 37:13I don't even know why we brought a chainsaw. This guy could have cut all the
- 37:16willows down himself. I should have.
- 37:19I mean, we really didn't bring the chainsaw. We got to use it for 10 minutes.
- 37:26It wasn't as tenuous 10 minutes was the problem. It was ripping for 10 minutes.
- 37:32But you know what? We got out. I don't know if we had got out if we didn't cut
- 37:36that hole in front of the boat and along the side of it.
- 37:39The side was the biggest one, I think. If we wouldn't have cut that,
- 37:41we'd have been, that boat would still be sitting there.
- 37:44Yeah. We'll pick you up in the spring. Yeah.
- 37:49Stick the spud poles in and we'll come back later.
- 37:52Call the Corps. Hey, can you guys drop the lake real quick?
- 37:57Well, no kidding. Don't worry. They'll do that on their own.
- 38:01That is true. You'd have to call them and tell them that you want it raised.
- 38:04Yeah, I don't really know what dropping the lake would have done for us.
- 38:06I think that would have made it worse.
- 38:09Well, at least your boat would have been there. Yeah, it wouldn't leave the trap.
- 38:13I don't like that. Or, you know, in March when everything's above the willows.
- 38:19I hope that doesn't happen this year.
- 38:23So did you agree to pick me up at five or? Hmm. We can do five. I mean, that'll work.
- 38:31It's either five or 4.30. 4.30 or five, one of the two that I pick you up.
- 38:36I mean, it's going to take us 20 minutes to get to the boat ramp.
- 38:39All right, 4.30 it is. I just said either one. I don't care which one don't
- 38:44act all butthurt and upset right now yeah now 4th time is still 5 o'clock anyway so,
- 38:50Didn't I beat you to the boat ramp by like an hour on Sunday?
- 38:55Yeah, but I was on my freaking deathbed. Oh. Doesn't count.
- 38:59There's no excuses allowed in this. Yeah.
- 39:02Yeah, I was late. My bad. Talk about it, be about it.
- 39:07I'm pretty sure that was the first day that I've been, I mean,
- 39:09I've been like five or ten minutes late, but that was the first day that I was an hour late.
- 39:14You've been married to a leavet for too long. You run on their time now. Shit.
- 39:20I am cooked. Speaking of 11, we do have some new hoodies coming here soon.
- 39:25Hopefully, he did respond to my email today and said, oh, so does that design work?
- 39:29I'm like, yeah, that's what that meant when I said, let's order this X amount of hoodies.
- 39:36Yes, please. Hopefully, they'll be done probably not until after New Year's
- 39:41now because it means Christmas, and I'm sure he's not working Thursday or Friday, and then New Year's.
- 39:45He ain't working New Year's. Ain't no way.
- 39:49No we will all be in rough shape yeah that's gonna be tough not i i gotta work
- 39:56at five o'clock in the morning yeah be on my best behavior oh so we got a dd
- 40:04yep i'll be here take you guys home,
- 40:08do whatever imagine how pissed he'd be if we called him at 2 30
- 40:11in the morning hey we need a ride i just
- 40:14i just stay up like drop you
- 40:17guys off come back drink my morning coffee get
- 40:20ready for work at that point yeah but
- 40:24i'll say i think i think he'd be down to do it if he knew we were not capable
- 40:28of driving uh yeah oh yeah absolutely i would much rather you guys call me than
- 40:34try to do some hero shit getting yourself home and something happened well you
- 40:40don't gotta worry about kade Driving home, he just walks home in the middle of winter anyways.
- 40:47I am known for that. Yeah, but I don't think it's going to be cold enough on
- 40:50New Year's for him to like really attempt that.
- 40:52I think he needs it to be negative 15 or whatever it was.
- 40:55Yeah, I think the wind chill that night was like 30 some below zero. Yeah.
- 41:00It was way too cold to be walking home.
- 41:03I think that was like the coldest day of the year last year when you did that.
- 41:08Yeah. Because it was below zero wind chills when the sunshine was out. Mm-hmm.
- 41:14You know, it was pretty cold goose hunting that day. That was a rough one.
- 41:18You know it's bad when we're like taking shifts with our 10-man group for Goose
- 41:22Wars, taking shifts back and forth to the truck because it's so fucking cold out.
- 41:27Not even that. We were taking shifts on who was going to call because everybody was too cold to call.
- 41:32It was fun, but it would have been a lot more fun if it wasn't below zero.
- 41:38If it would have even been zero, it's a different game. But that was brutal.
- 41:43Mm-hmm. Yeah, because, I mean, the geese didn't fly until, what, the last hour of the day?
- 41:47Like, we didn't see anything in the morning, afternoon, until,
- 41:51I think, 3 o'clock at the earliest.
- 41:54Yep, 3 o'clock. And the 3 o'clock groups were more friendly than the half hour
- 41:59before shooting time groups.
- 42:02Those groups were assholes. I hate late season geese. Izzy gets like that so much.
- 42:07When you start to mess with them city birds, especially on the last weekend
- 42:10of the season, they've been called at so much.
- 42:13Unless they truly want to be in that field, it's hard. Yeah,
- 42:18especially when you've got the guys chasing them all year that have bands on them.
- 42:22Trying to kill all them local city bands.
- 42:26Well, what are we coming up this week? I guess Christmas, huh?
- 42:30You guys got all your Christmas stuff to do? Yeah.
- 42:34I always forget that Christmas is coming up.
- 42:38I don't know. Hey, do you have to do any traveling for Christmas?
- 42:42We're going the weekend of, I guess it's the weekend after New Year's.
- 42:46We're going to go out to Lincoln and see my sister.
- 42:50Nice, nice, nice, nice. No traveling for us this year. I got to work the whole time.
- 42:56So we're staying in Iowa and we did Thanksgiving and everything with her family.
- 43:01So we try to usually trade off.
- 43:03So that's what we got going in the little household this year.
- 43:08You got, Tyler. Me and Ellie are going to go goose hunting.
- 43:13We're taking the boat. Yeah. Nah, I mean, I'm not going to go back home this year.
- 43:20I'm just going to stay home, and I got a bunch of stuff going on at home here.
- 43:24We're trying to sell this place.
- 43:26We definitely had to sign a bunch of documents today, get that ball rolling.
- 43:30Hopefully, get this house sold this next couple months.
- 43:35That would be nice. yeah what's coming after that
- 43:38what's coming after you sell it where
- 43:41are you going i'm staying local hopefully seeing a
- 43:45couple pieces of property today i liked a couple of them one
- 43:48is probably going to be well out of the price range but it was pretty badass
- 43:53found another one that is i think in the price range i'll know more once i kind
- 44:00of get pricing together here this week on and what size building I want to put
- 44:04up, and what I'm going to put into that.
- 44:06But we'll know more soon on that. I mean, it's not a bad location,
- 44:09not too far from where I'm at now.
- 44:12I definitely look forward to hopefully this summer getting the building put
- 44:16up and having a heated shop to thaw the boat out in instead of relying on Mother
- 44:21Nature to thaw the boat, which takes sometimes all winter.
- 44:27But no, a lot of big things coming, hopefully. Hopefully things work out.
- 44:32It just means more work for you.
- 44:35No, I mean, nothing I ever do makes life easier for myself. It always makes my life harder.
- 44:41But it makes money. Yeah.
- 44:46It makes memories. I have short-term memories, so I forget all of them anyways.
- 44:51It doesn't matter about that.
- 44:51I forgot you're a goldfish. All right.
- 44:56All right. Hmm.
- 45:00That was a good one. There it is.
- 45:03I'm not that much older than you guys. Come on. I don't know.
- 45:07I don't receive any AARP stuff in the mail yet. So.
- 45:12I don't either. I just get, I get phone calls about it.
- 45:18I'm getting a lot of spam calls lately about insurance and stuff like that.
- 45:22I'm like, whoa, not that old yet. Let's back it off a little bit.
- 45:27Just whenever it gets that time, you can make one of us your medical power of
- 45:32attorney. and we'll make sure that you go to a good home.
- 45:36Absolutely not. I will go find a homeless person on the side of the road and
- 45:39choose him before I choose either one of you two.
- 45:42Good call, good call. Absolutely. I mean, absolutely not.
- 45:49Well, do either one of you got anything else to add to this wonderful podcast
- 45:53we've had this week of just bullshitting our way through it?
- 45:57Not really, no. I think really the only thing that I wanted to say was just
- 46:02to everybody that listens to us that's traveling for the holidays, safe travels.
- 46:07Hope you guys get to spend that time with your family and have a Merry Christmas.
- 46:12Yeah, that's really nice of you. What he said.
- 46:15That's one of the nicest things I've ever heard you say. Like,
- 46:18and you said it to a bunch of random-ass people that you don't even know.
- 46:22Coincidentally, I like all of them better than I like you. No,
- 46:25that makes sense. No, checks out.
- 46:29This guy's bringing his guns out tonight. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:34Close us down. You know what? No, we're going to carry this on for another fucking hour.
- 46:41I'm just sitting here staring at each other. I'm going to go eat dinner.
- 46:44So you guys have fun. Wait, what's for dinner?
