- 2:44I want to welcome to the show now State Senator Amy Grady. Good morning,
- 2:46Senator. How are you. Good morning, Dave. I'm doing great.
- 2:51How are you today? I'm doing fine. Thank you for being here.
- 2:53I always love having members of the legislature on, especially when they could
- 2:57talk about their fields of expertise outside the walls of the capital. Though.
- 3:01You're an educator, and of course we just came off interims, so first
- 3:07of all, I want to ask you about school year House, a school
- 3:08year going so far. Oh, the school years fantastic. I have a
- 3:12whole nine kids in my fourth grade class this year, and remind people where
- 3:15it is that you teach. I'm at Leon Elementary in Mason County. We
- 3:19have one hundred and sixty kids approximately between the grades of pre k through sixth
- 3:23grade. And for some reason, this class size has been small since they've
- 3:27since they've been in school. Nobody really knows why, but it's a wonderful
- 3:30problem to have because the things you can do together with nine students is amazing.
- 3:36I mean, so is that the smallest class that you've ever taught?
- 3:38As nine? It is the smallest the for every first year that I taught
- 3:43fourth grade day I had twelve students and I was two brand new to really
- 3:46appreciate that because it was my first year in the classroom, and you know,
- 3:51twelve kids might as well have been twenty five. But as I am
- 3:53now a veteran teacher, having nine students is it's an amazing feeling. I
- 3:58mean it's the classroom is so fluid, you can just change things up as
- 4:00you need to. The one on one time that you can spend with each
- 4:03student is amazing, and you know that they can learn so much more because
- 4:08of that. Well, they're not going to be able to get by with
- 4:09a whole lot either from a discipline standpoint, because there's less of them.
- 4:13Yeah, that's true. But so far they haven't had very many issues.
- 4:15They're a pretty good kid. Well, that's good to know. So I
- 4:18want to ask you, and move away from elementary for a moment. I'll
- 4:21ask you about this high school transfer rule. I've spent a lot of time
- 4:25talking about it. I know others news organizations have as well, and I'm
- 4:29going to get into something related that a little bit later on in the show
- 4:31if I have time. What is your take on the high school transfer rule
- 4:34that has so many people up in arms? Senator Well, I I've had
- 4:38so many people ask me, does Dave? Honestly, they have asked,
- 4:40you know, jumped on to it and said we need to change this right
- 4:43away. We haven't given it time. In my opinion, we haven't given
- 4:46it time to see if it's going to work. If it's not being successful,
- 4:49one week of high school football does not do it. And as a
- 4:53matter of fact, if you look back to I guarantee if you look back
- 4:56to twenty twenty two high school football season, twenty twenty one high school football
- 4:59se and I guarantee you'll see scores just like we saw the very first weekend.
- 5:03I actually saw where somebody had posted something about that. It was somebody
- 5:06in the world of politics that had posted a list of scores from last year.
- 5:12And they said, if you saying I'm kind of paraphrasing here, I'll
- 5:15try to do it off my memory. But it was basically something that said,
- 5:18you know, these aren't scores from twenty twenty three that this person posted.
- 5:21These are scores from twenty twenty two before the transfer rule really went into
- 5:25effect, right, And we saw what last weekend. Some of those scores
- 5:30were fliplock. Some of those teams that that won by a had a marginal
- 5:32victory actually lost this past weekend. So you know, I think everybody just
- 5:36kind of jumping into that really quickly. Was it was a knee jerk reaction,
- 5:41is what we call it. You know. The reason that we did
- 5:44that and is when you look at transfers and you look at students that need
- 5:47to transfer, student athletes that need to transfer for some reason, whether they
- 5:51choose too or not. But when we if they're choosing because because they want
- 5:55to go to another school, or if their parents are moving or have a
- 5:58job somewhere, it makes it more convenient for them to go to another school.
- 6:00We have to make it easier for them. You know, having a
- 6:03student athlete set out a year isn't fair to them. Whenever a student comes
- 6:06from another state and transfers into West Virginia, they didn't have to sit out.
- 6:12They could immediately go in and start playing. But a student within the
- 6:15state would have to sit out a year. And that I was a student
- 6:16athlete growing up, and I know that if I didn't have sports, I
- 6:19don't know where I would have been because that was my life. And so
- 6:23that was the whole goal, was to make things fair and in fairness.
- 6:26When we think about families and or students transfer into another high school, it's
- 6:30not an easy decision. You know, that's a there's a that's a huge
- 6:33burden that they're taking with trying to trans transport their child to the school,
- 6:38get them there. And we also have to consider why are they wanting to
- 6:42leave their community school so quickly? What's going on? Maybe administration needs to
- 6:46take a deep look into you know, why do they want to leave that
- 6:47team, or why do they want to leave that school? That could be
- 6:50a bigger issue, and they're just so many things that's surrounded. I think
- 6:54we're jumping the gun. What's saying we need to fix it, because I
- 6:56think we need to have this sometimes. I think it is going to be
- 6:58brought up at Lee. I don't know how far it'll get Senator, but
- 7:00I know there was a press conference yesterday held at the Capitol some members of
- 7:03the House and they talked about that and that it was going to be at
- 7:08least addressed. They were wondering if it could be done in a special not
- 7:12necessarily a special session, maybe in terms or whatever. But it is definitely
- 7:15according to some and again we have a story posted about at wv metronews dot
- 7:18com. It is going to be addressed, I think in the upcoming session
- 7:23which will begin in January. So my friend Dana Ferrell's there Fromkinalla County.
- 7:26He has hated this before we even passed it. He was never a fan
- 7:30of it to begin with. We had lots of discussions over it. So
- 7:31I know he'll lead that charge and that's what he needs to do if he
- 7:34feels that's what's right? You know? So I don't. I don't really
- 7:39think the Senate really takes that stand on it. I think the Senate's gonna
- 7:42wants to give it a little bit of time to make sure that we're not,
- 7:46like I said, having an jerk reaction to it. So I'll be.
- 7:48But you know, anything can happen in the legislature. You never know
- 7:51during session. It seems like sometimes the easiest things become really hard to do,
- 7:56and sometimes the hardest things fly through easily. So I will wait and
- 8:00see. Talking to was sendor Amy Grady here on five eighty five, I
- 8:03was doing some reading on something called the third Grade Success Act And for those
- 8:09who may not know about it, what exactly is this third Grade Success Act?
- 8:15And as an educator, what are your feelings on That? Was my
- 8:20number one piece of legislation that I wanted to see past last year. It
- 8:24is modeled after legislation that has been done in Mississippi, North Carolina, a
- 8:28lot of successful states. Basically modeled after the Mississippi model where it teaches science
- 8:35of reading to kids in K through three and it also places instructional aids in
- 8:41those first grade, second grade, third grade classrooms. And we are implementing
- 8:46it by doing it one year at a time, and that to save on
- 8:48costs and to make sure that we're implementing it correctly. So this year,
- 8:52all first grade classrooms have instructional aids, and next year, second grade classrooms
- 8:54will have instructional aids, in the next year third grade classrooms, and you're
- 8:58going to We're going to see a huge, a huge amount of growth in
- 9:01our students and they're learning, they're learning to read, and our test scores
- 9:05in the third grading up are going to really show improvement. I have no
- 9:09doubt following the model that Mississippi has done will make a huge, a huge
- 9:13difference. There is a published report that I had just read as I kind
- 9:18of referenced that that says, I don't know if you want to weigh in
- 9:22on this or not, that I guess there was an unintended consequence of this
- 9:26that there may be a lot of special education aids that will lose their jobs
- 9:28because of this. Well, you care to address that or is it this
- 9:33has been your experience or what absolutely day not that they're losing their jobs.
- 9:37Okay, what we're seeing is a lot of special education aids are transferring into
- 9:41those instructional AID positions. And the reason for doing that is because it is
- 9:46and I'm going to do air quotes here, you can't see an easier job,
- 9:50and you know, and it's not an easier job, it's just a
- 9:52different type of job. When you are in a classroom where you're dealing with
- 9:54special needs kids and there's a lot of there are a lot of things that
- 9:58you have to be able to do and be willing to do for those children,
- 10:03and to go into being an instructional aid, you are providing the service
- 10:07of a teacher. You know, you're sitting down and you are actually responsible
- 10:11for giving instruction to students, and that's more enticing to a lot of people.
- 10:13So we have lost I think it was forty eight percent of the positions
- 10:20of special education aids, forty eight percent of them transferred into those instructional age
- 10:24positions. So what's happened is we have new people that are hired as aids
- 10:28and they're qualified as aids are filling those special education positions. And that's not
- 10:33necessarily a bad thing. So those positions are filled, it's just that the
- 10:37person that's been in there that maybe has more experience has decided to move out,
- 10:41and so we need to see how we can make it more enticing for
- 10:45those experienced special education aids to stay in that room instead of transferring out to
- 10:52another position. One more thing before we let you go, Senator, and
- 10:56I know you've been keeping a close eye in the situation at West Virginia Universe.
- 11:00The It's Old Brad Michael Hannay yesterday and the show Different Day, twelve
- 11:03different stories come out in the Messine Morgan's own program. We note here by
- 11:05the way Hoppyhead on the show yesterday WVU President Gordon Gey. If you did
- 11:09not hear that interview, it's worth going back and listening to. For sure,
- 11:13you can find it at WV metro news dot com. Rob Alsop from
- 11:16WVU is going to be on Hoppy today. Your thoughts, Senator on the
- 11:20problems at West Virginia University. How did we get here? And uh,
- 11:22well, here's a million dollar question. How do we fix it? Well,
- 11:26I how do we fix education in general? Dave? That's that's the
- 11:28million dollar question. But I have one hundred percent a full confidence in Gorden
- 11:33Gey, I really do. I've had several conversations with the man who he
- 11:37has. He has always had a plan. He is. He West Virginia
- 11:41is important to him. West Virginia University is important to him. He would
- 11:45never do something that would that would harm the students of WVU or harm WVU
- 11:50at all. Sometimes it just, you know, it takes a little bit
- 11:52of looking at the hard numbers and and a lot of it. You know,
- 11:56I think I think it was is it nineteen graduate programs? It was
- 12:01nineteen graduate programs that were cut, which affects about four percent of graduate students.
- 12:03Well, part of that problem we've talked about this for the last year
- 12:07or two with Gordon and with President Brad Smith at Marshall, is that,
- 12:11you know, you have all these universities that are offering online programs, online
- 12:15graduate programs. So people who are taking their graduate trying to get their masters,
- 12:20or doing doing it a graduate program, it's easy for them to access
- 12:24those courses online from home. You know, a lot of these people have
- 12:28families and that and they have a job already, and that's easier to do
- 12:31and it's a lot cheaper too. So a lot of those online programs are
- 12:35causing all of our universities to struggle with that and you know, with the
- 12:39eliminating a lot of a few of the majors and double majors. I think
- 12:43that was less than affected, less than one percent. You know, making
- 12:46cuts is never fun. It's never fun in anything you have to do.
- 12:50But you have to take a good, a good hard look at things and
- 12:52say is this needed? You know, And and a lot of times I
- 12:56think we look at the people instead of the position, and we look at
- 13:00the people instead of the program, and we really just have to look and
- 13:03say, if it's not needed, it has to go. And that's a
- 13:05really hard decision. But I think they're trying to do their best with what
- 13:07they have. So you're Grady. It's always a pleasure to talk to you,
- 13:11especially when we get into things that have to do with education, because
- 13:15that is your background. I appreciate it. We'll let you get back to
- 13:18it. Thanks a lot. We'll talk soon, all right, Thanks Daves,

- 18:00Talking about Brian Wood, he joins us. Now, mister Wood,
- 18:02good morning, how are you sir, good morning, how are you,
- 18:03sir? Great, great to have you here, Thank you, thank you,
- 18:06thank you for having me. Uh So, first of all, I
- 18:08have to say, I'll follow you on social media and and you've you've been
- 18:12putting the miles on the on on the old truck out there. I've reached
- 18:18out to every every county and physically I've got nine more counties to hit,
- 18:22and and obviously we're revisiting those counties I've already hits. And you know,
- 18:26think about it is, Brian West Virginia is a small state, you know,
- 18:30compared to other states. But when we we I I've mentioned this to
- 18:33be before, it's a very diverse state. And what I mean by diverse
- 18:37is it's totally different world in mcdowe County than it is in Morgan County,
- 18:42Sir, Ohio County has nothing almost to do with Raleigh County. It's just
- 18:47it's it's very different depending on where you go, uh in the state.
- 18:49But I mean I've seen you, you know, a lot to various places
- 18:52you're down in in my my old stomping grounds down in Logan County. I
- 18:56saw that too, Yes, Sir, visited Logan Mingo boon and uh and
- 19:00caught the Winfield Chapman Bill game. Yeah, I'm well sure you're probably happy
- 19:04about that, right, Well, you know, I just love good football.
- 19:07I know. Yeah. You gotta say to them the politically correct they've
- 19:11been a Winfield guy. You gotta say, you don't want to make the
- 19:11people Chapmanville mad. All right, So, Brian, what are you hearing
- 19:15from the voters as you're out campaigning and what are you trying to tell them
- 19:18about Brian wood Wells. As far as hearing from the voters, once they
- 19:22hear my story, they love it. They love the fact that I have
- 19:26the experience that I have, that I'm committed to this office, that the
- 19:30dial has not moved from this office. They love the fact that, you
- 19:33know, I know the elections like the back of my hand. I've got
- 19:37twenty years experience and manage and safe, clean elections of Putnam County, and
- 19:41I wanted to do that for the state of West Virginia. So I guess
- 19:44when you're out there, what part of the thing. And I've said this
- 19:47on the show, Brian too, is when people think Secretary of State's office
- 19:49and I know something about it because I used to work there. People think
- 19:53elections, uh, and that that's what that's what gets the news. But
- 19:59but there's a whole lot more to it than just that. And I think
- 20:02sometimes you educate. I mean I found when I worked there, I had
- 20:03to educate people that didn't realize that's the secret that if you're a notary,
- 20:07it goes to the Secretary of State's office. That if you're part of a
- 20:10nonprofit organization, it goes through the Secretary of State's office. If you have
- 20:12an h o A. It goes to the Secretary of State's office. If
- 20:15you're gonna be process, yeah, all those things, and nothing becomes a
- 20:22law when you see the governor signing, you know, things on television or
- 20:26whatever. It's not that's just ceremonial. That means absolutely nothing until it goes
- 20:30through the Secretary of State's office. Right. And the Secretary of State's Office
- 20:33is a lot like the County clerk office in that we were main hats.
- 20:37You know, we're in charge of pay roll, bookkeeping, the financial statements.
- 20:41We're in charge of the record room and recording deeds and so forth.
- 20:45We're in charge of the elections obviously, and so there's no other job in
- 20:52the world I can think of that mirrors the Secretary of State's office as much
- 20:56as a county clerk's office. And that was going to be my next question,
- 20:57your experience as a county clerk. You think it'll it parallels, as
- 21:02you said, with the Secretary of State, because there's a lot of different
- 21:04things at a lot of things that are that are the same. It'll absolutely
- 21:08pay dividends for State of West Virginia. It'll pay dividends for that office.
- 21:11I'm the only candidate and we'll be the only candidate in this race that can
- 21:15hit the ground running from day one. I know the team in place,
- 21:18I know the vendors, I know the equipment. I know where we're at
- 21:22in the process as far as National change of Address, you know NCA,
- 21:27the different things that we know we're moving for right national change of address.
- 21:32Where we're moving forward with the process. Everyone else is gonna have to back
- 21:36up learning and it will be two years before they get caught up too.
- 21:40And two years is too much to wait. You know, it's not on
- 21:41job training program. We need somebody needs to know it from day one,
- 21:45especially with the world we live in with elections in election or if you are
- 21:49elected, and again we're talking with Putnam County Clark Bryan Wood is candidate for
- 21:52Secretary of State. Brian, if you are elected and you go in,
- 21:56what are some of the things on day one day, two day, first
- 21:59one hundred days and say say under the capital though that you would want to
- 22:02look at. Well, right now, I think we're moving in the right
- 22:06direction. Uh, there's sometimes where we need pauls for a second, dought
- 22:10eyes and cross our tees. I'd like to do what we do better.
- 22:14Know that that our our state wide voter registration is shared up. Know that
- 22:18you know, it's it's easibly usable for the clerks throughout the states, so
- 22:22they can they can provide that service to the the public. You know,
- 22:26that's where it kind of all the starts in our state wide voter registration system.
- 22:29Once we do that, you know, our different apps and stuff like
- 22:32that from military voters and disabled voters. We want to make sure that you
- 22:34know it's is there any stop gaps there that's that's hindering the voter from having
- 22:41a smooth transition into the processing their ballot. If there isn't, wonderful,
- 22:45If there is, we need to fix those once we look at that and
- 22:48do what we do well, then we'll move forward in other directions. And
- 22:51we hear Brian across America about all of these, you know, real or
- 22:56imagined problems with with voting around the country. But West Virginia, and again
- 23:03I used to work there and I'm from southern West Virginia. Double whammy there.
- 23:06So I've heard all of the stories in the past about this. It
- 23:08really doesn't happen in West Virginia these days. It doesn't. It simply doesn't
- 23:12happen. Voter fraud is not a thing in West Virginia. Well, you
- 23:17never can take a out off the ball and you for you know, so
- 23:19we're not gonna say no never, because we prosecute to people for fraud.
- 23:23But if you look at it, the numbers compared to other areas. I
- 23:26degree, I believe our voters are confident in our elections. I believe our
- 23:32our our kunt of clerks are poll workers. The Secretary of State's office and
- 23:36the staff works hard to ensure the voter integrity in West Virginia. We have
- 23:41good election laws in West Virginia, some of us due to our bad habits
- 23:44in the past, and so can you learn from your mistakes, man,
- 23:47and we do, and then we do, and then you put those laws
- 23:49in place and you correct them and you go forward. So now we also
- 23:55know that a couple others that are in the race, Delegate Chris Chris Pritt
- 23:59from here Kanag County's and on the show. Former Delicate Ken Reid has also
- 24:00been on the show. There are rumors that there may be more to enter
- 24:04the race. How do you feel that you stack up against the ones that
- 24:10are already confirmed to join the race for Secretary of State? Bran You You've
- 24:12invited me a couple of times to be on your show, and I've told
- 24:15you, I've told you, well, no or other way it out or
- 24:18other way. I'm the kind of guy that wants to know what's out there
- 24:21and know what's going on before I get on the microphone and speak. And
- 24:25because I didn't, you know, one time they're running for this, next
- 24:27time they're running for that. They're not showing up to any of the meet
- 24:30to candidates. I don't know who's running, who's not running, what they're
- 24:33running for. Today, I'm here and I've accepted your invitation only because of
- 24:40what I've heard Monday the possible rumors. Okay, and I'll go ahead and
- 24:45address that. There is a I had former Delegate Doug scaff who just resigned
- 24:49from his office on Friday as a delegate. Uh. He certainly, if
- 24:53you go back and listen to the interview, certainly sounded like he was going
- 24:56to be a candidate for secretary of state. You your thoughts. It's free
- 25:00world. He could be a candidate for secretary of state. But shame on
- 25:03the Republican if he switches parties. Shame on the Republicans if that happens.
- 25:07And you know this, this is and I don't want to sound like I'm
- 25:14a Republican. If you want a friend, you got a friend of me,
- 25:17whether you're a Democrat Republican. But you know me well and you know
- 25:19how I run my office in Putnam County. But the party system is in
- 25:23place to try to educate the voters, to let them know where a candidate
- 25:29stands as far as what their priorities are. And it's it's essential, especially
- 25:34in state races where the candidate may not be able to get out to every
- 25:38voter, or the voter may not have time enough to educate themselves on the
- 25:45candidates. So uh, this sticking your finger up in the air and seeing
- 25:49which way the wind blows and deciding which you know, Okay, I'm going
- 25:52to be a Republican this time, I'm gonna be a Democrat that next time,
- 25:56and essentially lying to the voters for self gain. That's not where it's
- 26:03at. I've been a Republican since I've been registered to vote. I ran
- 26:07as a Republican Punnam County when they had thousands more voters than the Republicans did.
- 26:12And one because because I went out and met the people. They know
- 26:15who I am, they know what I'm about, they know my integrity,
- 26:19so you know I Doug is the was the Democrat minority leader. You know,
- 26:27he brought bills to the floor such as House Bill twenty eight fourteen,
- 26:33which was in twenty twenty one, which is the Election Elections, Security,
- 26:38Access and Monetization Act of twenty twenty one. Okay, and basically what that
- 26:44is is a copy of a Washington S one and hr one, which basically
- 26:51is a Washington takeover of our local elections. Let me just tell you some
- 26:56of the things that are in in these bills, and no SCU absentees absentee
- 27:03must be mailed. Absentee ballots must be mailed to every active voter drop boxes,
- 27:07uh one per ten thousand voters. Different things like that. All the
- 27:14horror stories you hear in these other states about their elections, you know,
- 27:18not getting their results on election night, is in this bill. And he
- 27:22was standing there on the floor promoting this bill. And so Republicans, Conservatives,
- 27:30Democrats that worry about our deggery of our elections, you need to look
- 27:33and investigate and educate yourself on this because this is what he's promoting. Now
- 27:37he'll say, well, I'm the I was the minority of the leader.
- 27:40I had to go along with the team and this and that and whatnot.
- 27:42But he said on your show, you are who you are. You gotta
- 27:47be who you you, you gotta be. Well, we know what he
- 27:52is because he's standing up there on the floors, and I just I care
- 27:56too much about it, h you know, my my, I'm not sitting
- 28:00back at home deciding, well, do I want to run, do not
- 28:03want to run, don't want to be a Republican, don't want to be
- 28:06a Democrat. I'm out here asking for votes because I care about the integrity
- 28:10of that office. And if I'm if a not Secretary State, then I'm
- 28:12gonna be the kind of clerk of Putnam County. And my my needle has
- 28:17never moved. I'm not wishy washy uh. I care about our elections.
- 28:22I care about the people of West Virginia, and I care about election.
- 28:26It's not just for the Republicans, for the Independence and the Democrats as well.
- 28:30And once once you hit office, the politics stop and the law is
- 28:34the law, and you gotta you gotta go by the law, and I
- 28:37believe in that. But to get there, unfortunately, it has to be
- 28:41politics. I don't like it. It's not fun. It's you know,
- 28:44this is it's it. And it's fun in the sense that I get to
- 28:48see the people, meet the people, and that that that's a blastemy go
- 28:53through a parade and seeing kids and all that. I love it. I
- 28:56love it, every bit of it. But what's not fun is the aikiness
- 29:00of the politics and the akiness of a state race because you got so much
- 29:06wishy wash. You got people telling people just saying what they want to say
- 29:10just so that they can get a vote. And I'm not that way.
- 29:12I'll tell you exactly what I think. Hopefully we can agree. If we
- 29:17can't agree, I hopefully agree to disagree. But I'm not. I'm not
- 29:19I'm going to stand for what I stand for, believe in what I believe
- 29:22in. With that said, I have open ears and I'll listen and I'll
- 29:26contemplate your concerns and stuff, and if it makes sense, I will change
- 29:30my opinion of what I think. But so I'm not steadfast, and this
- 29:36is I'm always right and nobody else's nobody else is wrong. But at the
- 29:40same time, I'm not going to tell you something you want to hear just
- 29:44to get your vote. It's still early, Brian, and they haven't happened
- 29:48yet, but I'm sure they will. Debates among secretary of state candidates.
- 29:52Is that something when that happens that you're looking forward to? Yeah? Absolutely
- 29:57absolutely, And there will be no other can that knows knows the equipment,
- 30:02knows the processes, you know. Hopefully the the questions won't be skewed and
- 30:07they'll be they'll be into the nitty gritty nuts and bolts of what what elections
- 30:11in that in that office is about. And it won't be it won't and
- 30:17it won't be something where it's generically this and that and this the person who
- 30:22can can say what the voters want to hear the best. You want to
- 30:26talk about the specifics of the office and the races. Absolutely, and I'm
- 30:30confident that there's no other UH candidate in this race that it's going to know
- 30:36as much about that office as I do, and about elections as I do,
- 30:38and about managing the public office as I do with multiple multiple divisions and
- 30:44stuff like that. I'm I'm not in Most of these candidates are in it
- 30:52too. UH. I feel in it to advance themselves, to hire high
- 31:00ground, governor Congress, whatever it may be. What if I get elected
- 31:03Secretary State, I'll go on the record right now I will not run for
- 31:07governor on or not run for Congress. I'm in it for Secretary State.
- 31:11I'll serve one or two terms, three terms, and then whatever the people
- 31:15will have me, and then I will go to the House or go do
- 31:18something that you know, teach coaching kids or something like that. You know.
- 31:22But right now, we've still got gas in my tank. I still
- 31:25care about there, still care about this process, and I want to be
- 31:29UH the next Secretary State and concentrate on that, and you know, as
- 31:36county clerk, you're not allowed to have any other jobs, so you got
- 31:38to concentrate on And that's fine, I understand that. You know, you
- 31:41got concentrate on the people you serve. These other candidates they got law firms,
- 31:47pharmacies, newspapers, things like that, you know, and so they're
- 31:51concentrate on that, trying to get you know, their richest through that,
- 31:53and then they're also trying to serve the people West Virginia. My sole thing
- 31:57will be my family, my eight and and then and then conscious in the
- 32:01office, you know, and so I'm dedicated to that office. I was
- 32:07I was thinking on my way up here, you know, I was like,
- 32:08I can see the commercial in the paper right or the cartoon in the
- 32:13in the paper right now, you know, the little Derek Queen looking boy
- 32:15with a dark hair instead of blonde hair, with a figure up in the
- 32:19air saying which way the wind blowing? You know, as far as but
- 32:22the problem is, you know what, guess what, he owns the paper.
- 32:25So I don't we'll see that that cartoon, you know it you maybe
- 32:30Allden'll pick it up. I don't know. But but as far as uh
- 32:32as far as that goes, I'm not and I'll fight tooth and nail to
- 32:38make sure that the conservative people out there, the Republican Party, that they
- 32:45get a candidate that is as like minded as them and not us, not
- 32:50just somebody that's what you washed you back and forth he ran for he ran
- 32:55as a Republican as at a House of elegance in Wan County in the tooth
- 33:00and two, I believe it was. He wasn't on the general so and
- 33:02I haven't had enough time to investigate why, and I'm not gonna say anything
- 33:07about it because I don't know just yet on why he wasn't on the general.
- 33:10What's to say that he gives the nomination now Natalie Tenants on the or
- 33:15somebody else's on the on the Democrat side, and any withdrawals, and then
- 33:19now that gives the up bridge to the Democrat and then now we have a
- 33:23Democrat Secretary of State because he withdrew like he did like it possibly did in
- 33:31two thousand and two as a Republican, because he's still playing for the team
- 33:36that he's been with for the last ten years. Let me close with this
- 33:39because somebody had asked about it about One of the things that the Secretary of
- 33:44State Mac Warner kind of prided himself in his office did with the help of
- 33:46the county clerks, was was cleaning up the voter rolls and taking up taking
- 33:51a lot of names off the voter roles. We had a text here that
- 33:52somebody said that they did not support being taken off the rolls until the person
- 33:58requests to be taken off. The problem with that is is that nobody,
- 34:06there's very few that come back in and say, hey, we've moved from
- 34:09West Virginia to here, West Virginia to wherever or and so forth. So
- 34:15at some point you've got to clean these roles. You can't keep them rolling
- 34:20rolling, rolling. One, it costs the money to the counties taxpayers dollars
- 34:22because you got to buy you got a program ballots. You got to buy
- 34:25ballots for each and every one of those voters. Uh So, so it's
- 34:30important that we have some system in place. The system in place is kind
- 34:35of a federal thing, not a local thing. It takes essentially two federal
- 34:42elections plus another period of time prior to that that you've been been inactive.
- 34:47So essentially it's like six to eight years before you actually can be removed from
- 34:53the roles if you're inactive so U and then at that time we must send
- 35:00you an NCOA card and we talked about that, or a national change of
- 35:04address and we send you a card to the the address that you were currently
- 35:08at. And and once once you get that card, you can melt it
- 35:13back and say, hey, no, I'm still here, I want to
- 35:15still be right, or no, I've moved, take me off the rolls,
- 35:20or if we don't hear from you, we put you in an active
- 35:22status. Was still can vote if you're still there, and that will put
- 35:27you back active again. But if it's not. If you go to an
- 35:30active status and you miss those two federal elections, that's the only time we
- 35:34take you off. So there's this long period of time between now and then,
- 35:37and if that I feel sorry, you know, if that voter missed
- 35:39an opportunity to vote, I'm sorry for that. There's no kind of clerk
- 35:44in the state or in the Secretary of State's office that wants a voter not
- 35:46to be able to have their voice heard. But at the same time,
- 35:50we have to keep the roles clean and secure. We gotta wrap it up

- 39:06Got a lot of texts to get to and I'm I got several things.
- 39:08I need more time, Jeff car Hopey tell him I need more time,
- 39:12okay, Uh. Anytime that I have somebody on, with all due respect
- 39:16and I love my Texters, but anytime I have somebody on that is running
- 39:22for statewide local office, we always get these national questions and I'm sorry,
- 39:24but I'm not going to ask them. If if like the text says,
- 39:29is Brian would a pro sex abuser, meaning a Trump Conservative. You know
- 39:32that's we're gonna concentrate on West Virginia. We're not going to concentrate on national
- 39:37things. When I have these folks on U. Text says one of these
- 39:39politicians who quit their current job or after being elected, announced Candida to see
- 39:44for another position, think that people will vote for them. I was unaware
- 39:47that quitting h the acquitting the commitment was a West Virginia value. According to
- 39:53a texter, A texture says, I will be voting for Brian Wood for
- 39:58Secretary of State. He's an honorable man with no ulterior motives. He is
- 40:00one of us. According to a texture, texas Dave, I don't believe
- 40:07it would reflect well on West Virginia if a media mogul such as Doug scaff
- 40:12was given the reins the state level office that controls are voting systems and procedures,
- 40:16much different conflicts of interest in his prior role as a delegate. Let's
- 40:21just keep in mind. No that you know, with all due respect,
- 40:23Doug Scaff, who I considered to be a friend, had him on the
- 40:25show on Monday. He did not say he was running for secretary of State.
- 40:30He sounded a heck of a lot like he was going to run for
- 40:31secretary of State. But that's not you know, he's look at it.
- 40:36He said, the office has intrigued him. As far as the changing parties,
- 40:38those rumors have been around with scaff for some time. I don't know.
- 40:43He didn't want to answer it right now. He doesn't know what he's
- 40:45gonna do. He told me off the air that there's going to be some
- 40:47announcements made in the coming weeks and we'll just kind of wait from that.
- 40:51A couple of programming notes. First of all, coming up on talk line
- 40:53with Hoppy Teno six delegate and candidate for governor More Capital, and I am
- 41:00told told there's gonna be announcement of some sort from Delegate Capital that we don't
- 41:05want to miss. That's first up on talk Line. Also More as I
- 41:08mentioned earlier WVU News with Rob Alsoft on the show This show tomorrow. Judge
- 41:13Stephanie Abraham, who was recently appointed by Governor Justice to be the judge for
- 41:16the thirteenth Judicial Circuit serving Kanawa County, will be on the show tomorrow.
- 41:21Plus reb Fest starts tomorrow headed Riverfront Park and Charleston. We're gonna do a
- 41:24deep dive Jeff into the barbecue vat tomorrow and talk about rib Fest a little
- 41:30bit. And I'm told on Sunday there's gonna be a wing eating contest as
- 41:34part of the rib Fest WVU legend. Major Harris is going to be a
- 41:37part of that. Our own Woody Woods from a sister station one oh seven
- 41:40three to beat Anthony Lewis, Kenny Bass, Jim Strawn and how mag did
- 41:45Jim Strawn to get in? There should be fun. Rib Fest again is
- 41:49starting tomorrow running through the weekend had Ed Riverfront Park. Please note the new

- 42:07mention this too a long. If you're a longtime listener to this station,
- 42:12you may remember the name Rick Johnson. Rick Johnson for years, his name
- 42:16was synonymous with the stations here at eleven eleven, particularly with this station,
- 42:21and he hosted the afternoon show if you remember with Mike Agnella. Rick Johnson
- 42:24is going to be returning at least for one day. Rick is gonna be
- 42:28my guest host this Friday on Friday Funhouse. Definitely looking forward to that.
- 42:32I understand we have a call, so let's go to the phones and let's
- 42:35talk to Kenny. You're on the air. Go ahead, Yes, Dave,
- 42:39you're talking about the Secretary of State's office. I noticed there's still one
- 42:45person and hasn't decided whether she would run again, Okay, and that would
- 42:52be Madly Nat Lieutenant former Secretary of State. And I don't know what her
- 43:00ands are politically or anything like that, but I think it'd be a good
- 43:05time for her to jump back in there since she knows basically everything there is
- 43:08to know about that. And but uh, like I said, that's up
- 43:16to her. I know she's had some medical issues and stuff like that during
- 43:20the last year or so. Yeah. Well, and she's also been doing
- 43:23some things I think on the national front, to uh, with the with
- 43:29the Brennan Institute, and she's been doing some things with that. I don't
- 43:31know, I have not I don't know. I don't know what what her
- 43:35future plans are. I mean, the bottom line is it would be hard
- 43:37for at this point, With all due respect of Miss Tenant or anybody else,
- 43:42it's gonna be hard for any Democrat to be elected statewide and West Virginia
- 43:45at this point. But hey, you know what, I think the more
- 43:46people that you have running and the different parties the better, so best electacyccess
- 43:52run. I would agree with what he said about being elected one party and
- 44:00the switch and then I think we had a governor. Yeah, we've had
- 44:07a few that seems to be that seems to be quite common. The governor
- 44:10probably be the biggest of them. I meant that I'll leave it alone,
- 44:15but yeah, No, you're right, and there have been several some members
- 44:17of the legislature that have that have done it as well. There's a lot
- 44:21of folks that think that that shouldn't be allowed to happen, that if you're
- 44:23elected, you should have to serve and stay at least in that office.
- 44:27What would your your take on that? If you're elected as an office to
- 44:31an office, Kenny, as a Republican, I'll say, should you have
- 44:34to remain a Republican? Yes, throughout that term and then you need to
- 44:38run again as a Republican. That's what you want okay, all right,
- 44:43well, Kenny, I appreciate your phone call. Thanks a lot. It's

- 48:15You heard Delicate Data Farrell last week on this show and others have spoken out
- 48:20against it. Well, yesterday, Delicate Ferrell others at the Capitol announced their
- 48:23support of what's being called the High School Sports Integrity Act. Now you can
- 48:29read about it again and during a part of Jeff storywv Metronews dot com.
- 48:34It was announced during a press conference yesterday at the Capitol. Delicate Walld Hall,
- 48:37who represents an area around Saint Alban's, alluded to the fact that that
- 48:40Port Saint Alban's High School a triplate school based on enroll, but may not
- 48:45even be able to finish the seasons. How bad it is. Getting back
- 48:50to the Delicate Farrell, he believes that there is the support there to reverse
- 48:52it. However, if you heard Senator Amy Grady in the first part of
- 48:57this show, he says it's a no go in the Senate. So I
- 49:01suppose we are going to see what happens. DA text says mistake of the

- 49:30Uta Sek has a story on the website remember states coronaviruses are Dr Klay Marsh,
- 49:37well, he was on. He's been talking vaccines again. Now the
- 49:40of the new Maderna Advisor boosters have been approved by the FEDS. The updated
- 49:45vaccines will be available for those eight six months and older now. Doctor marsh
- 49:51says that the new vaccine is designed to offer increased protection against the new omicron
- 49:57variant, which is spreading quickly as they say. There was a interview with
- 50:01doctor Fauci. Yeah, he's back in the news these days. I think
- 50:06he's a professor now at Georgetown University. Faucci urging people to get the booster
- 50:09but it's stopping short in fact of all, not saying there will be and
- 50:14he said there will be no need in his opinion, no need for lockdowns,
- 50:17mask mandates, et cetera, like we saw going back to twenty twenty.
- 50:22Of course, none of this matters in the world of social media or
- 50:23people are already posting that they will not comply with mandates, which not going
- 50:28to happen. So calm down, Karen's. But I do think a lot
- 50:31was learned from the last round of lockdowns, mask mandates, etcetera, etcetera.
- 50:37The experts seem to think that the masks may have helped, and we
- 50:44know the vaccines did. But as for the lockdowns, you know, I
- 50:46continue to ask the question was it all worth it? Talking about the lockdowns
- 50:53of what it did to this country, crippling and entire economy that we're gonna
- 50:58be a long time recovery ring from. And I think this story and the
- 51:02way we handled COVID is going to be studied for hundreds of years. I
- 51:07mean, you know, this is something of Courtunately, I don't have time
- 51:09to get into it right now, but I'm wondering, how how concerned are
- 51:13you about about COVID right now? I mean, it's out there, it's
- 51:16happening again, but it seems to be a whole lot milder. A lot
- 51:20of that is because of the immunity that people have gotten. A lot of
- 51:22people have already the majority of people I know I had it. I had
- 51:25at August of last year. This was after having the vaccine and the booster,
- 51:30And I mean to be honest with you. Had I not gone to
- 51:31a medical facility, which I rarely do, to be tested for it,
- 51:36I would have never even known I had COVID. I had a runny nose.
- 51:37That was it. I was lucky, and I'm not downplaying it because
- 51:40I lost one of my best friends at fifty years old who died of COVID.
- 51:45Was was very mild. Thankfully, other people weren't. Weren't so lucky.
