- 1:15Speaker 1: we're having an outdoor gear manufacturing convention. Did you catch that? Dave?
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yes? I got that. Okay, that's probably all I'll get today.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Joining party by Dave Smith, and we're gonna we're gonna
- 1:27Speaker 1: clear something up right away. Dave isn't hearing everything. And
- 1:31Speaker 1: last time he was on the show, his wife told
- 1:34Speaker 1: him he sounded arrogant. I didn't catch because he'll just
- 1:40Speaker 1: he was just missing parts. Are you open about this? Yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 1: oh yeah, I explain to your problem.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Well yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And by the way, my wife before this, she gave
- 1:50Speaker 3: me some words of encouragement. She said, she said, remember, Dave,
- 1:54Speaker 3: you don't have to be funny, charming and intellectual, just
- 1:57Speaker 3: be yourself. So I was like that that really helped
- 2:02Speaker 3: a lot. But yeah, I just I can't hear shit.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I mean, it's just way too much shooting and with
- 2:09Speaker 3: without wearing hearing protection and guiding. And I've taken as
- 2:12Speaker 3: many as twenty four goose hunters by myself on one hunt.
- 2:18Speaker 2: And so don't don't be Dave.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Wear hearing protection because it sucks when you get in
- 2:24Speaker 3: this situation, that's for sure.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Okay, he's got isolated, You got your hearing aids in.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Got him, got him cranked up. We'll do the best
- 2:31Speaker 2: I can.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:32Speaker 1: So if you're at home thinking, man, Dave guy's an
- 2:34Speaker 1: arrogant bastard. He may be, it's just that he can't hear.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I don't feel like that's gonna be a problem for today.
- 2:40Speaker 5: No.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Joined also by Jason Phelps, the team from the founder
- 2:48Speaker 1: of Phelps Game Calls. Joined by the Lewises from f
- 2:54Speaker 1: HF GEAR. Yep, I won't say say a little bit
- 2:58Speaker 1: more now.
- 3:00Speaker 4: What you want us to say?
- 3:02Speaker 1: The highly ever Bowls, the highly ver Bowls Paul Lewis
- 3:05Speaker 1: and John Lewis from FHF Gear.
- 3:07Speaker 4: My wife's here to tell me that same encouragement.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Is going to give you live feedback. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: because you guys are designers, like you guys are designers,
- 3:21Speaker 1: so you spend a lot of time just not you
- 3:23Speaker 1: spend a lot of quiet time.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Yeah, we just that'd be.
- 3:26Speaker 1: The goal anyway, It is the goal.
- 3:28Speaker 6: We just got done with the shows down in Salt
- 3:30Speaker 6: Lake and Portland, and for me at least, like my
- 3:33Speaker 6: voice is gone by the first day because I'm I'm
- 3:36Speaker 6: used to sitting in sitting in it, like Dave said,
- 3:39Speaker 6: a dark dungeon and not talking to anybody. So yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 6: needs to exercise the vocal cords a little bit.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Are you all visited out after doing trade shows?
- 3:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I think we both get where we need to.
- 3:50Speaker 6: Just this will be the most socialization. We'll do probably
- 3:54Speaker 6: for the next week or so. How many trade shows
- 3:56Speaker 6: did you go to?
- 3:58Speaker 7: This is number two we have of three four, so
- 4:02Speaker 7: we have three more.
- 4:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know. I try not to keep track.
- 4:06Speaker 6: But it's a lot, a lot of people, a lot
- 4:08Speaker 6: of talking. All yeah, man, but it's good. I mean,
- 4:10Speaker 6: I enjoy seeing seeing the customers and like getting that feedback.
- 4:15Speaker 4: It just my voice goes out fairly early in the
- 4:19Speaker 4: trip usually.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Phelps, Did you like doing trade shows?
- 4:22Speaker 4: I love them.
- 4:22Speaker 8: They do they wear on you, though. I mean, I
- 4:25Speaker 8: like being at them, but I'm not in the same breath.
- 4:28Speaker 8: I'm glad that they were on the same weekend this
- 4:30Speaker 8: year and they're just done and over with. But no,
- 4:32Speaker 8: it's always good to catch up with your customers and
- 4:34Speaker 8: listen to hunting stories and shoot the crap.
- 4:37Speaker 1: You know what I liked that I didn't know you
- 4:38Speaker 1: guys had is at your booth. You have that chart
- 4:42Speaker 1: that like game call that that the major ram call matrix.
- 4:47Speaker 8: Yeah, it's just because you spend so much time explaining
- 4:50Speaker 8: the same thing, so it's easy to point, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 8: and like, hey, this calls down here, this calls up here.
- 4:54Speaker 9: I would have rigged it, so it was work like
- 4:58Speaker 9: had a goal, so work better, works better, works better,
- 5:02Speaker 9: then nobody leads to a high price margin.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Man, I thought we could. I was gonna say, at
- 5:09Speaker 1: some point, we're not going to buy the ones that
- 5:11Speaker 1: work worse. But I get that damage the sales on
- 5:14Speaker 1: the little on the little working calls Clay's here. He
- 5:16Speaker 1: doesn't make anything. All his trust, all his stuff is
- 5:20Speaker 1: written in words.
- 5:21Speaker 10: That's right.
- 5:23Speaker 1: He makes a little. He makes cute carvings and artworks. Yeah,
- 5:26Speaker 1: did you see your picture out there?
- 5:27Speaker 11: Yeah?
- 5:27Speaker 10: Man, yeah, krink.
- 5:29Speaker 1: He grabbed the picture so we can show the picture again.
- 5:31Speaker 10: Finally made it. Made it.
- 5:32Speaker 1: We're doing you know, we're doing a T shirt design.
- 5:34Speaker 10: Yeah, I heard about that.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I like it. I'm gonna show it again.
- 5:38Speaker 10: Hey, I was gonna say, I was going to ask
- 5:39Speaker 10: you a question, Jason about your trade shows. Are you
- 5:42Speaker 10: the guy that's elk bugling like NonStop, just like just
- 5:47Speaker 10: like attracting attention?
- 5:48Speaker 8: Yeah, and then like the specially because this is where
- 5:52Speaker 8: I put it, Clay, can you and your own words
- 5:54Speaker 8: quickly explained?
- 5:55Speaker 10: So a couple of years ago I found this at
- 5:59Speaker 10: my mom and dad's house and had completely forgotten that
- 6:03Speaker 10: I had drawn this when I was a junior in
- 6:05Speaker 10: high school in art class. It's a pen and ink
- 6:08Speaker 10: of a muscled up dude, like a future man, yeah,
- 6:12Speaker 10: with a machine gun shooting a big hog in a
- 6:15Speaker 10: cyper swamp. And I made a living in high school
- 6:20Speaker 10: man off drawing muscled up guys. I don't know what
- 6:23Speaker 10: it was, but I was like, I just like drew
- 6:26Speaker 10: those guys NonStop. And I think this is a This
- 6:28Speaker 10: is the first time I've realized this. This is a
- 6:30Speaker 10: spin off the Bo Jackson wearing his wearing his shoulder
- 6:34Speaker 10: pads with the with a baseball bat. Yeah were you
- 6:37Speaker 10: do you remember you? Oh, this was inspired by that, well,
- 6:40Speaker 10: the shoulder pads. He's wearing football shoulder pads.
- 6:42Speaker 1: He's been on the show.
- 6:43Speaker 10: Yeah, Bo Jackson man, Now he had Bo Jackson had
- 6:46Speaker 10: a famous baseball card or football card where he had
- 6:50Speaker 10: his shirt off, shoulder pads on with a baseball bat.
- 6:54Speaker 10: I think that's what inspired the shoulder pads. But yeah,
- 6:57Speaker 10: so we're gonna make a T shirt machine gun.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Oh, that'd be a good name for the shirt.
- 7:05Speaker 10: That's what I think. That's what we referred to it as.
- 7:07Speaker 1: That's great, it's great.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Artwork that's really cool.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Uh and then uh, Dave Smith. Of course you're from
- 7:14Speaker 1: from uh D s D. You know, how do you
- 7:16Speaker 1: guys handle that there's Dave Smith decoys and then D
- 7:20Speaker 1: S D decoys. Have ever asked you about this?
- 7:23Speaker 3: So I've always tried to push D s D because
- 7:26Speaker 3: it sounds less because arrogant.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Exactly because you're arrogant.
- 7:33Speaker 3: So I meant at the beginning, I wanted to call
- 7:35Speaker 3: them zombies zombie decoys, and that just didn't stick. You know,
- 7:40Speaker 3: people were just like, you know, you got to go
- 7:42Speaker 3: get Dave Smith, you know, if you got any of
- 7:43Speaker 3: Dave Smith, and that just sort of that just sort
- 7:46Speaker 3: of happened.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So but now you know, we're.
- 7:48Speaker 3: A larger you know, larger company and part of a
- 7:51Speaker 3: larger company and everything like that.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Like I don't it just so you're comfortable.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I don't offend Jason because of the Felps scholar or
- 7:58Speaker 3: whatever like that. But I just like felt like it's
- 8:00Speaker 3: it's a I have, you know, not I'm not like
- 8:04Speaker 3: the you know, the big decision maker on everything, you know,
- 8:07Speaker 3: I mostly do the artwork part of it and stuff
- 8:10Speaker 3: like that. So it's a there's so much contributors to
- 8:14Speaker 3: DSD that I wanted to make sure that it wasn't
- 8:16Speaker 3: all about me.
- 8:18Speaker 1: So you're comfortable to be in DSD decoys.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah whatever d s D.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I mean, DSD Decoys doesn't really make sense because it's
- 8:26Speaker 3: Dave Smith decoy, so it'd be like, yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 8: I'm I'm changing Phelps game calls the PGC after him
- 8:35Speaker 8: talking about arrogance and his name.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I'm gonna Philips.
- 8:37Speaker 1: We're going back to PGC.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Oh Man, already, already, I'm alreadysier to say than f
- 8:44Speaker 2: h F.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Joined also by Brad Cochran, who's never been on the
- 8:48Speaker 1: show before. Brad Cochran from DSD.
- 8:50Speaker 12: Thanks for having me.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, man, I want to get to something. I want
- 8:57Speaker 1: to get something about your decoy philosophy. Okay, we'll talk
- 9:02Speaker 1: about it later. He well, no, we'll I want to
- 9:08Speaker 1: touch on then we'll delve into it later. You you, uh, hey,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you need to just go all the way.
- 9:14Speaker 10: You always do this. You always go you touch on
- 9:18Speaker 10: like the most thing, and you're like, we're gonna get
- 9:22Speaker 10: back to it. Just go for it, Okay, just let's
- 9:24Speaker 10: go all in.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You uh all right, you have a rule that you
- 9:28Speaker 1: don't want to shoot. Now you've bushwacked turkeys in the
- 9:31Speaker 1: past and done all the oh sure, yeah.
- 9:33Speaker 12: I mean I got into turkey hunting when I was
- 9:35Speaker 12: fourteen years old, so you know, I imagine, like a lot
- 9:39Speaker 12: of new turkey hunters, it was all about getting a bird, oh.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Yeah in the beginning, and belly crawling, bushwacking, yeah, ditch crawling, yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: strangling whatever it took. Yeah, but you got now you
- 9:54Speaker 1: don't want to hunt them if you're not using a decoy.
- 9:57Speaker 2: For sure.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Walk me through that. Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 12: Well, I mean there's a lot of reasons for it,
- 10:03Speaker 12: I would say, first and foremost, for me, it's really
- 10:07Speaker 12: about the the experience I've found that there. There's just
- 10:14Speaker 12: there's there's nothing quite as memorable to me as having
- 10:17Speaker 12: that really close encounter, and with decoys, I can draw
- 10:21Speaker 12: them in as close as I want. Essentially, you know,
- 10:24Speaker 12: I mean, obviously I have to be concealed. That's certainly
- 10:29Speaker 12: an important component to it. But there's also you know,
- 10:31Speaker 12: it's it's challenging. I like to let I like to
- 10:35Speaker 12: let my season, you know, I like it to last
- 10:38Speaker 12: more than three days. We have a six week long
- 10:42Speaker 12: season in Oregon. Back home so.
- 10:44Speaker 1: How many turkeys you guys a loud three? Really?
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:48Speaker 12: One per day, three per season.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Are you turkey numbers holding up?
- 10:54Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:55Speaker 12: They are. Our turkeys are doing really well.
- 10:59Speaker 1: When you when you're when you say that that there's
- 11:04Speaker 1: a trick to it, do you feel that there's a
- 11:06Speaker 1: trick to how you set him out? Yeah?
- 11:10Speaker 12: Yeah, absolutely, you know you want them to be visible
- 11:14Speaker 12: for sure, And I think it's really important that you
- 11:18Speaker 12: go into your hunt knowing that. Okay, my goal is
- 11:23Speaker 12: to decoy a bird, right, So my mindset isn't that
- 11:27Speaker 12: I want to get a bird however I possibly can.
- 11:30Speaker 12: It is I want to draw a bird into the
- 11:32Speaker 12: decoy before I shoot it.
- 11:34Speaker 1: If you want to spur it at decoy, you know.
- 11:37Speaker 12: I mean not necessarily, because sometimes I might just be
- 11:39Speaker 12: using a hand decoy, Like if I'm archery hunting, for example,
- 11:43Speaker 12: I've had better success with just a single hand decoy
- 11:46Speaker 12: because the bird is more likely to either come in
- 11:50Speaker 12: full strut and he's not moving versus you know, when
- 11:56Speaker 12: you put a gobbler decoy out. Oftentimes the bird's responses
- 12:00Speaker 12: is that they're very aggressive when they come in. They
- 12:03Speaker 12: come running in, they come you know, kicking the shit
- 12:06Speaker 12: out of the decoy and you're sitting there and you're
- 12:09Speaker 12: waiting for the bird to stop, and you know general
- 12:13Speaker 12: rule of thumb, I would say, I need a good
- 12:15Speaker 12: five seconds to get drawn back, you know, find my
- 12:19Speaker 12: my aiming point, and then let my arrowfly. And that
- 12:22Speaker 12: can be really difficult if you've got a bird that
- 12:24Speaker 12: is so pissed off at your gobbler decoy that he
- 12:26Speaker 12: just won't stop, you know, eating the hell out of it.
- 12:29Speaker 12: So I've found that shooting a bird in full strut
- 12:34Speaker 12: is ideal, and actually the most ideal is when you
- 12:37Speaker 12: can get a bird to climb up on top of
- 12:39Speaker 12: your hand decoy. So we make a decoy called our
- 12:42Speaker 12: mating hand decoy. She's actually laying on her belly and
- 12:46Speaker 12: she's she's in a breeding position. It's a very natural
- 12:50Speaker 12: looking breeding position and it's really effective because it's super
- 12:54Speaker 12: stable and it's it's one of my favorite.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Well they climb up there, Yeah, don't you think that
- 13:01Speaker 1: I'm surprised he doesn't show up and think, like, man,
- 13:03Speaker 1: there's no way that just laying out there a breeding
- 13:09Speaker 1: position real quick? Usually do you think that.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I hunt?
- 13:17Speaker 1: So one of the places that hut my buddy, Uh
- 13:20Speaker 1: Doug Durren's place for the youth season, and and uh
- 13:25Speaker 1: sometimes you get where uh you get where gobblers won't
- 13:30Speaker 1: come out. You know, they'll know that decoys out there.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Do you think when a gobler won't come out and
- 13:35Speaker 1: it just wants to like watch that decoy and then
- 13:38Speaker 1: shy off from a gop from a male decoy, do
- 13:41Speaker 1: you think is that he don't buy it or you
- 13:42Speaker 1: think that he don't want to go out and tussle
- 13:44Speaker 1: with it.
- 13:46Speaker 12: I would say, I mean, it's just if it's is
- 13:49Speaker 12: one of our decoys. I mean, is it a realistic
- 13:51Speaker 12: looking decoy we're talking about, or.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Just say like whatever, yeah, like yeah, one of your decoys.
- 13:56Speaker 12: Yeah, in that situation, I would say, you know, assuming
- 14:00Speaker 12: that you know, your height is good and he didn't
- 14:03Speaker 12: see somebody move or pick you out or call terribly yeah, yeah,
- 14:09Speaker 12: then yeah, maybe he's just not in the mood to
- 14:12Speaker 12: challenge another.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Bird because uh, the way he's got set it up.
- 14:16Speaker 1: He's got like this trail cam and we'll set up
- 14:21Speaker 1: and sit and he'll he'll be like, oh yeah, every
- 14:23Speaker 1: day that bird comes out and does whatever, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 1: And then so me and my kids go out there
- 14:28Speaker 1: and we set up like a you know, a pack
- 14:31Speaker 1: of them and uh using that using a half strutter,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and he might come down and see that and not
- 14:41Speaker 1: like it. But if it's just a hen right out now,
- 14:45Speaker 1: I was warm. If that bird doesn't want to get
- 14:46Speaker 1: his ass kicked.
- 14:47Speaker 8: Sometimes I would say that it's the difference because then
- 14:49Speaker 8: the other ones, you know, and then you might get
- 14:51Speaker 8: one just runs out there like.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Totally intent on fighting that thing. Yeah, you know, like
- 14:57Speaker 1: they got different moods or whatever.
- 14:59Speaker 12: You know what I'm saying, right, And that's why we
- 15:01Speaker 12: make gobbler and hen decoys and multiple different poses. You know,
- 15:06Speaker 12: you see our strutter decoy over there, and he's a
- 15:08Speaker 12: very dominant that's a very dominant pose right there, and
- 15:12Speaker 12: any gobbler that season knows that he's asserting himself. Whereas
- 15:16Speaker 12: that one over there, which I'm going to call the
- 15:18Speaker 12: half strut bake because that's really what it is, and
- 15:21Speaker 12: that way Dave doesn't kill me. Somewhere along the lines,
- 15:26Speaker 12: that got called the three quarter shrud Jake, and it
- 15:29Speaker 12: got printed on a UPC label and put on five
- 15:33Speaker 12: hundred boxes shipping to bass pro shops.
- 15:36Speaker 1: He was three quarter strudding.
- 15:37Speaker 12: He's actually half strutting. That's the intention of that decoy.
- 15:41Speaker 12: So we're going to call it the half strut, Jake,
- 15:43Speaker 12: even though it technically, if you look on our website,
- 15:46Speaker 12: it's called the three quarter.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Shread, Jake, tell me about the unhappiness. You just think
- 15:51Speaker 1: it's goofy to say something's three quarter strutting, three quarter
- 15:55Speaker 1: crow rams.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I mean, I you know, I mean I put a
- 15:59Speaker 3: lot of effort in to the poses and make sure
- 16:01Speaker 3: I try to make him as accurate as possible and
- 16:03Speaker 3: everything like that, and that is a half strut, Jake.
- 16:07Speaker 12: I think what you have to realize here, Steve, is
- 16:09Speaker 12: that Dave he studies birds obviously a lot, and and
- 16:14Speaker 12: their anatomy, and there are you know, there there are
- 16:19Speaker 12: other there are other poses that would be close more
- 16:23Speaker 12: closely resemble a three quarter Strutchach. In other words, he
- 16:27Speaker 12: there are poses between that decoy that are closer to
- 16:31Speaker 12: a bird that's in full strut like that one right there,
- 16:34Speaker 12: It would be more appropriate to call a three quarter
- 16:37Speaker 12: stretch ache.
- 16:37Speaker 1: You know those shirts to show like the evolution to man. Yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 1: we should do one of make it like ten steps
- 16:46Speaker 1: toward full strut. Yea with the fractions. Yeah, the first
- 16:50Speaker 1: one be like hanging out and then at the end
- 16:53Speaker 1: of the turkey in full strut, and it just shows
- 16:56Speaker 1: him'd be great decoy guy. We should cancel that about that,
- 17:01Speaker 1: we should cancel that that future man and just do
- 17:07Speaker 1: the thing on the way to the thing to.
- 17:09Speaker 10: Help people be able to describe what they're seeing. Like
- 17:12Speaker 10: if I'm telling the story, I'm like, man a turkey
- 17:14Speaker 10: with seven eight strut.
- 17:17Speaker 1: How often do you how often do you see that?
- 17:19Speaker 1: You know, when Jake's come in, Jake's come in and
- 17:21Speaker 1: get nervous about Jake's come in and get nervous about strutters?
- 17:27Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about.
- 17:28Speaker 12: They can, they can?
- 17:29Speaker 1: What do you think that what's going on in your head?
- 17:33Speaker 12: I would say that most of the time, Jakes are
- 17:35Speaker 12: probably intimidated by a strutter decoy if they're not gonna
- 17:40Speaker 12: approach it. But I've had I've had even individual Jakes
- 17:44Speaker 12: come up and attack our strutter. That's what I'm likely
- 17:46Speaker 12: to happen.
- 17:46Speaker 1: That's what I was going to get to next, is
- 17:48Speaker 1: when you get a handful of them and they're going
- 17:51Speaker 1: to take it on.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I've had situations where I was hunting one big
- 17:56Speaker 3: Tom and he absolutely would not come in because there's
- 17:59Speaker 3: three jakes and my decoys, and I couldn't get rid
- 18:01Speaker 3: of the jakes. I'm finally I'm like, maybe I should
- 18:03Speaker 3: just start shooting the jakes or something that's gonna be frustrating.
- 18:07Speaker 3: But it's like with everything too, even with the dear dycoy.
- 18:09Speaker 3: I've had bucks step out and see the dear decoy
- 18:13Speaker 3: and I'm super excited, and I'm like, I know it's
- 18:15Speaker 3: a buck that has been aggressive before, and then it's
- 18:18Speaker 3: just like on this day, he just doesn't want to
- 18:20Speaker 3: deal with it. And I always thought that individuals were
- 18:24Speaker 3: in their certain pecking order turkeys or deer, and that
- 18:28Speaker 3: that that's how they'll always be. But even their mood
- 18:31Speaker 3: can change within the hour or day to day and
- 18:33Speaker 3: stuff like that.
- 18:35Speaker 1: There's no situation where like, at a minimum, you're gonna
- 18:38Speaker 1: use a hen, right, and then there's no situation. Have
- 18:43Speaker 1: you ever set out have you? Do you ever use
- 18:46Speaker 1: no hen and.
- 18:48Speaker 12: Just a gobbler decoy? Yeah, maybe it's happened before. If
- 18:55Speaker 12: it has happened, it was probably because I was just
- 18:58Speaker 12: trying to move really quickly and I only felt like
- 19:01Speaker 12: I had time, you know, maybe to grab one decoy
- 19:04Speaker 12: and and set one decoy, because the draw of a
- 19:07Speaker 12: gobbler decoy is that, you know, if you have an
- 19:10Speaker 12: aggressive bird, oftentimes that that might be the only tool
- 19:15Speaker 12: you have to draw him away from his hens, is
- 19:20Speaker 12: to threaten him with another gobbler who's who's challenging him.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Then he might kind of he might want to come
- 19:26Speaker 1: in rough.
- 19:26Speaker 12: Yeah, because if a bird has five hens with him
- 19:29Speaker 12: and he sees another hen, you know, sure he might.
- 19:32Speaker 12: He might gobble at you, but he's he's not gonna leave.
- 19:36Speaker 12: He's not going to leave the real deal. And so
- 19:41Speaker 12: just generally speaking, I would say that you're gonna have
- 19:44Speaker 12: better success with a gobbler decoy if a birds end up.
- 19:48Speaker 1: One of the things I like watching is uh, I
- 19:51Speaker 1: like watching the hen come up to a hen and
- 19:55Speaker 1: how they get like gradually really pissed. At first they're
- 19:59Speaker 1: like purring at it, and pretty soon like hey, what's
- 20:02Speaker 1: your problem? And then they're like packing it. I've had
- 20:06Speaker 1: them come in and like lay down next to it,
- 20:10Speaker 1: you know, like thinking they're hanging out and then get
- 20:12Speaker 1: mad at it and pack it. You watch them go
- 20:14Speaker 1: through this whole little friendship.
- 20:15Speaker 12: Yeah, it's crazy, you know, keeps.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Everybody entertained with your decoy. I know some tombo Yeah yeah, okay.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I was hunting my boy one time and we had
- 20:24Speaker 1: we just had all we had. We had a DSD
- 20:26Speaker 1: hen and the hen came out and I'm not kiddy
- 20:29Speaker 1: man like laid down with it, just set there forever,
- 20:34Speaker 1: laid down not moving and then got irritated at it
- 20:39Speaker 1: and like purred at it, got eyeball to eyeball with it.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Was just not getting what it wanted out of it,
- 20:46Speaker 1: packing at it, you know, bullying it because the.
- 20:50Speaker 10: Hen wasn't saying anything back. I don't know, I can't
- 20:54Speaker 10: tell questions. It wasn't responding.
- 21:00Speaker 1: And that in that same spot where that happened, we
- 21:02Speaker 1: had a KYO come over and roll that thing, which happens, yeah,
- 21:06Speaker 1: which happens pretty frequently, come out and roll it. They
- 21:12Speaker 1: more reliably roll the decoys than like a predator caller decoy.
- 21:18Speaker 1: They'll charge it a lot of times, you know, it's
- 21:20Speaker 1: just a predator caller sitting there with a little tail waving.
- 21:23Speaker 1: They'll charge it and then they'll change their mind. But
- 21:26Speaker 1: the decoys they go for it. I think cause it
- 21:28Speaker 1: looks like they get there and it looks like what
- 21:29Speaker 1: they're expecting. It doesn't look like a plastic box with
- 21:34Speaker 1: a chunk of tail hanging off it. And then do you, uh,
- 21:38Speaker 1: do you change, like, do you change your setup? You
- 21:41Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about youth season? You seasons always
- 21:44Speaker 1: real early. When I talk about having having like where
- 21:47Speaker 1: you see like a bird, he seems like he doesn't
- 21:49Speaker 1: want to duke it out, you know, and he's like
- 21:52Speaker 1: a little bit shy about coming up to his strutter decoy.
- 21:56Speaker 1: But that's early, right, you would still be snow on
- 21:59Speaker 1: the ground. So do you change how you set your
- 22:02Speaker 1: decoys throughout the season?
- 22:04Speaker 12: Sure, I mean that it changes as the season progressives,
- 22:11Speaker 12: but it also you know, it can it could depend on,
- 22:14Speaker 12: you know, an individual bird that I might be going
- 22:16Speaker 12: after or so it's not necessarily what I'd use for
- 22:25Speaker 12: decoys doesn't necessarily correlate with the time of the season.
- 22:29Speaker 12: A lot of times back home, our birds are still
- 22:32Speaker 12: pretty flocked up during the youth hunt because that's the
- 22:36Speaker 12: weekend before our season. Sure, we're April fifteenth, and the
- 22:40Speaker 12: Saturday and Sunday prior to April fifteenth is the youth hunt.
- 22:45Speaker 12: So you know, I mean a lot of times we'll
- 22:46Speaker 12: be setting up on you know, maybe the roost is
- 22:49Speaker 12: holding thirty forty birds, and a week or two later
- 22:53Speaker 12: there's only you know, maybe fifteen. So a lot of
- 22:58Speaker 12: times during that youth hunt, you're actually not hunting too
- 23:03Speaker 12: many individual gobblers, but there's lots of groups of you know, three,
- 23:07Speaker 12: four or five birds running around and they're pretty dang aggressive.
- 23:11Speaker 12: You put a gobbler decoy out and it doesn't really
- 23:13Speaker 12: matter what it is, they're going to come attack it.
- 23:16Speaker 1: What's the most decoys you ever set out at one time?
- 23:18Speaker 1: You'll put a whole flock out, like you're hunting geese.
- 23:22Speaker 12: Probably the most that I've ever put out is maybe five,
- 23:28Speaker 12: five or so.
- 23:29Speaker 3: But when we go hunt with Matt Winners, he puts
- 23:32Speaker 3: out like twelve.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Oh dude, they're tel turkey decoys.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And we have we have several customers that
- 23:38Speaker 3: do that and they just every time they're just shocked
- 23:41Speaker 3: at how well it works. And I'm kind of surprised
- 23:43Speaker 3: that it works that good because it's like, all of
- 23:45Speaker 3: a sudden, the flock of turkeys is, you know, encountering
- 23:48Speaker 3: a whole new.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Flock and yeah, they're like I thought I was the flock.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, let's go mingle. But yeah, it's pretty fun
- 23:56Speaker 3: when you, uh, when we have done that. Matt is
- 24:00Speaker 3: the one who really turned that on the first time
- 24:02Speaker 3: we ever went. He's in Kansas. The first time we
- 24:04Speaker 3: ever went to go hunt with him, he wanted to
- 24:06Speaker 3: impress us of how many DSDs he had and he
- 24:08Speaker 3: had them all out in his yard and.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Then you wanted to show you what a good customer
- 24:11Speaker 1: he was.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, actually yeah, And he's just been h he's
- 24:17Speaker 3: been buying up first light gear the last couple of
- 24:20Speaker 3: weeks and weeks. He's just like a great supporter of
- 24:23Speaker 3: DSP and anything that we do.
- 24:24Speaker 2: He's just a great guy.
- 24:25Speaker 4: We love it.
- 24:26Speaker 2: We love him all right.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Give me, like, give me the just give people like
- 24:32Speaker 1: the setup. If people aren't gonna try to figure a
- 24:36Speaker 1: whole bunch of stuff out and they're not gonna buy
- 24:38Speaker 1: a dozen and they're just starting out, what do they
- 24:43Speaker 1: want to put out? They want to put out a
- 24:45Speaker 1: strutter and a hen like, just like give it like
- 24:47Speaker 1: the straightest, most most you know, idiot proof setup for idiots.
- 24:55Speaker 12: Well, like I always I asked him first you know
- 24:59Speaker 12: about their hunt. First off, are you a shotgun hunter
- 25:03Speaker 12: or are you an archery hunter?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Shotgun?
- 25:05Speaker 12: Okay, you're a shotgun hunter. Then I get a hen
- 25:07Speaker 12: in at Jake decoy.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Hending to Jake, Yeah really yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 10: Three quarter strut.
- 25:14Speaker 1: So you just if you're telling someone like, okay, let me,
- 25:17Speaker 1: let me give you the profile of the guy. There's
- 25:20Speaker 1: a guy. Let's just say there's a guy that knows
- 25:23Speaker 1: he's got access on some field and it's not a
- 25:27Speaker 1: big spot. He's got access on forty acres and now
- 25:30Speaker 1: and then he notices on his way to work he'll
- 25:32Speaker 1: see some turkeys out in the field and he thinks
- 25:35Speaker 1: to himself, Man, I'm gonna go out in that field
- 25:37Speaker 1: on O ME day and I'm gonna sit there. And
- 25:40Speaker 1: that's as much as he knows.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a perfect Jake and a hen Hen guy that,
- 25:46Speaker 3: like some of the guys, will will start him off
- 25:48Speaker 3: with a strutter. If they have like a big boss
- 25:51Speaker 3: Tom that they've been having, you know, trouble with, that's
- 25:54Speaker 3: the time to put a strutter.
- 25:55Speaker 2: But it's also.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Trouble well, like they're just they just have been able
- 26:00Speaker 3: to get him to go to commit by any other
- 26:04Speaker 3: way or with other decoys or something like that. But yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 3: I mean a half stritch jake and a upright hand
- 26:10Speaker 3: is a great I mean people have done that for
- 26:14Speaker 3: years and years just starting out and had great success
- 26:17Speaker 3: with it. And we've had quite a few people at
- 26:19Speaker 3: the beginning just put out just an upright hand only
- 26:21Speaker 3: and start with that. But if you can afford two decoys, uh,
- 26:25Speaker 3: Jac and Hen just really covers it. And then after that,
- 26:30Speaker 3: if you want to improve your odds and you start
- 26:32Speaker 3: adding in at least like confidence poses like feeders and
- 26:37Speaker 3: printers and that kind of that, that kind of helps
- 26:40Speaker 3: a lot.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Do you.
- 26:42Speaker 1: My buddy' Zuck when he's putting them out, he likes
- 26:44Speaker 1: to put him out where he's like, well, yeah, but
- 26:46Speaker 1: they I could picture him walk in toward that corner,
- 26:50Speaker 1: and you make sure that that they look like they're
- 26:53Speaker 1: traveling in direct yeah, into that.
- 26:56Speaker 3: Yeah, we made a striding hand just for that purpose,
- 27:01Speaker 3: and when some people a little by, three or four
- 27:03Speaker 3: of them just for that reason. So we're just trying
- 27:08Speaker 3: to offer everything and give you lots of options so
- 27:11Speaker 3: that everyone's confused.
- 27:14Speaker 10: Is there any decoy company that makes realistic looking feet
- 27:18Speaker 10: turkey feet.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I don't think so. I mean, I don't know why.
- 27:24Speaker 10: That's the only part of any decoy that's not realistic.
- 27:29Speaker 10: But I mean, by the time they get that close,
- 27:31Speaker 10: it's probably two heats in the grass. But I mean,
- 27:33Speaker 10: you know they've they've all got the state coming down.
- 27:35Speaker 10: And I mean a turkey turkey feet are kind of bright,
- 27:39Speaker 10: you know that bright pink. I just wondered if there's
- 27:42Speaker 10: like if you could and it maybe maybe it's it's
- 27:45Speaker 10: not a factor.
- 27:46Speaker 3: But there are some things that I can't tell you.
- 27:51Speaker 3: I can't say right now, but we we we agree it.
- 27:57Speaker 10: Could be like a detachable bipod. I bet I don't
- 28:01Speaker 10: have any inside intel here.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I'll shut out. Oh, I can tell what Dave can't say. Yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 1: I mean I've detected not can tell. I can't tell you.
- 28:09Speaker 10: I've got some ideas, But.
- 28:11Speaker 3: I mean, feet are a huge part of birds like
- 28:14Speaker 3: Mallard ducks.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Even sitting on the water.
- 28:16Speaker 10: You can see feet are huge, a huge part of it.
- 28:19Speaker 3: And Canada geese, especially the large race white cheek geese,
- 28:24Speaker 3: the feet are a huge.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Part of it.
- 28:27Speaker 3: And and I've fought that battle with the DSD forever,
- 28:30Speaker 3: like wanting to have full legs and feet. So we
- 28:33Speaker 3: have legs, but we don't have feet. But the feet
- 28:34Speaker 3: are really a big part of a goose.
- 28:36Speaker 10: How about a little battery pack where they move like this.
- 28:40Speaker 1: So it's you're saying that the feet means something to
- 28:42Speaker 1: a bird. Well, picture that you saw a dude standing
- 28:45Speaker 1: on a field with no legs, but he was hovering.
- 28:50Speaker 1: But it's really normal.
- 28:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, because like in our goose hutting, a
- 28:54Speaker 3: lot of our goose setting is about landing birds and
- 28:56Speaker 3: having them walking around the decoys. So we somehow we'll
- 29:00Speaker 3: use small spreads but get birds to land, and then
- 29:02Speaker 3: those are our decoys while we try to get other
- 29:04Speaker 3: birds come in in case we want to look for
- 29:06Speaker 3: a like ban or net collar out of the air.
- 29:08Speaker 3: And it's like, it's probably okay that the decoys don't
- 29:12Speaker 3: have feet while the birds are coming into land. If
- 29:15Speaker 3: you wanted to shoot at the first flock that came in,
- 29:18Speaker 3: it's probably fine land. But once they land they're walking
- 29:21Speaker 3: around the decoys. It does seem like, I mean, the
- 29:24Speaker 3: decoys hold birds really well, but it does seem like
- 29:27Speaker 3: it's just not right that all the decoys are like
- 29:29Speaker 3: hovering there on a post.
- 29:31Speaker 2: It bothers me. I don't know if it bothers the birds, but.
- 29:34Speaker 3: It'd be kind of cool to have the complete bird
- 29:37Speaker 3: for sure.
- 29:41Speaker 1: But usually they're like sitting in grass. But anyways, I
- 29:44Speaker 1: got what you're saying.
- 29:45Speaker 13: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 29:57Speaker 1: In your guys line up, when did you start making
- 29:59Speaker 1: turkey decoys? Because you all everything like you were like
- 30:01Speaker 1: all geese all the time, and then you moved into Brad.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Is the d S historian, and he's good with dates
- 30:07Speaker 3: and stuff, and it's all a blur to me.
- 30:09Speaker 12: So, Brad, it was in eight with our upright hand.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It was in eight with our upright So can we
- 30:18Speaker 2: edit that out?
- 30:19Speaker 1: Who's the who paints the Is there a turkey painting specialist?
- 30:24Speaker 12: I mean our whole paint crew paints them.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm saying, is there like, is it divided
- 30:30Speaker 1: out or to the same people that paint geese paint turkeys.
- 30:33Speaker 12: Oh that's correct, Yeah, that's how we do it.
- 30:35Speaker 1: It's divided out.
- 30:37Speaker 12: So if they paint geese, they also paint.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Okay, and they get sick of I They kind of
- 30:43Speaker 3: get sick of painting this one thing for for a
- 30:46Speaker 3: long long time and they actually like a little bit
- 30:48Speaker 3: of variety.
- 30:49Speaker 2: They don't mind going.
- 30:49Speaker 3: From turkeys to geese and back to you know, turkeys
- 30:53Speaker 3: and then the deer or something like that.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Got it kind of monot monotonous.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Otherwise, when they paint him, is it a small what
- 31:01Speaker 1: is the tool? Is a small airbrush they use?
- 31:04Speaker 3: They use big touch up guns and then small airbrush
- 31:08Speaker 3: and then a lot of hand painting too, hm so,
- 31:12Speaker 3: and then there's stencils, stenciling.
- 31:14Speaker 1: I don't want a dog in any particular decoy company,
- 31:17Speaker 1: but I remember we used to when we were younger.
- 31:21Speaker 1: We'd buy like a certain brand of decoys, and a
- 31:23Speaker 1: lot of times you'd see where they did it was
- 31:25Speaker 1: automated or something, because the they'd miss yeah, like the
- 31:31Speaker 1: white patch, Yeah, the spot, Yeah, like the white man
- 31:36Speaker 1: would be around the bag. It's like, yeah, that's so.
- 31:42Speaker 1: But when someone buys one, it's been like there's been
- 31:45Speaker 1: a dude painting on it.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 1: I don't think people realize that.
- 31:48Speaker 10: Yeah, No, I don't know for sure.
- 31:50Speaker 12: And there's probably been like five people that contributed to
- 31:53Speaker 12: that one decoy because we don't we don't have like
- 31:57Speaker 12: individual stations where somebody paints a decoy from start to finish,
- 32:01Speaker 12: you know, and put a base later on, and then
- 32:04Speaker 12: you know, progressively, step by step it'll move down to
- 32:11Speaker 12: the next person and so on and so forth until
- 32:14Speaker 12: it's fully painted.
- 32:15Speaker 1: You ever seen But none of those guys wear braids
- 32:17Speaker 1: and stuff? Do they? With the little palette?
- 32:22Speaker 13: We know.
- 32:25Speaker 1: That'd be a good ad campaign. Man's add with a
- 32:28Speaker 1: brain and a palette doing some touch ups on it.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Put some happy little wattles on a turkey.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Well, I was just gonna say, like that, like on
- 32:37Speaker 3: the like on the streutter, for example, all that red
- 32:42Speaker 3: is all painted by hand brush and the entire body colored,
- 32:46Speaker 3: every bit of pearls and irid essence on that that's
- 32:50Speaker 3: all painted by brush by hand.
- 32:53Speaker 1: How long does it take to paint a decoy start
- 32:55Speaker 1: to finish.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:57Speaker 12: That's you know, we get asked that so often.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And we have no idea. We don't want to I
- 33:02Speaker 2: don't want to know.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But you don't add it up now.
- 33:05Speaker 3: I mean maybe Greg does. But yeah, we're working on
- 33:09Speaker 3: a new decoy right now. That's really really difficult to
- 33:12Speaker 3: paint that. I can't I mean I can't really talk
- 33:14Speaker 3: about it because we're not positive that will come out
- 33:16Speaker 3: with it.
- 33:16Speaker 2: But it's really really difficult to paint.
- 33:18Speaker 3: And it's like, oh man, if we figured out how many,
- 33:20Speaker 3: I mean, well, we'll never make a profit with it.
- 33:23Speaker 1: What it supposed to look like? What kind of animal?
- 33:26Speaker 1: A bird? A bird one that goes quack like a
- 33:31Speaker 1: Himalayan cock of the rock.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it's a a temis tragopan.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 1: What makes it hard the positions into the kind of.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Bird it's it's a Mallard duck is what we're working
- 33:43Speaker 2: on right now.
- 33:44Speaker 3: And it's just a lot of you know, there's just
- 33:47Speaker 3: there's a lot of airbrushing, a lot of color.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Can I ask a dumb question and don't that's not
- 33:57Speaker 1: going to offend people?
- 33:59Speaker 4: How much?
- 33:59Speaker 13: Does?
- 34:00Speaker 8: Doesn't matter? But I'm not I'm not excited. Don't know,
- 34:04Speaker 8: like if the paint's awful a little bit while the
- 34:06Speaker 8: birds pick it up, or does it matter ten percent
- 34:09Speaker 8: of time?
- 34:10Speaker 10: We've just we have just.
- 34:14Speaker 3: We just decided a long time ago to just make
- 34:17Speaker 3: making things as accurate as we possibly can. And I've
- 34:19Speaker 3: made fish replicas my whole life. And my mentor was
- 34:23Speaker 3: honestly the best fish replica artists on Earth, Ron Pittard,
- 34:27Speaker 3: and he just taught me that you just don't You
- 34:32Speaker 3: just don't stop until something's deadly accurate, and then it
- 34:36Speaker 3: It has made a huge, huge, huge difference. So you know,
- 34:40Speaker 3: I don't know for sure how much it really matters
- 34:42Speaker 3: or whatever, but and it's it's not all about oh,
- 34:45Speaker 3: like I'm doing it for me or anything like that.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Like it's like, shit, no, we want we want birds
- 34:51Speaker 2: super super super close. We want to make quick, clean kills.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Everything we do is mostly for our own hunting, and
- 34:57Speaker 3: it's to be as absolutely as effective as we can.
- 35:00Speaker 3: We honestly don't give a shit about you know, how
- 35:02Speaker 3: pretty the decoys are, whether they were carved by a
- 35:05Speaker 3: world class carver or anything like that. We just we
- 35:07Speaker 3: just love to hunt and as effectively as we can.
- 35:10Speaker 10: So, I mean, I think but realism is a big
- 35:13Speaker 10: deal with turkey decoys. Yeah, I mean big deal because
- 35:16Speaker 10: guys were the real serious guys years ago and some
- 35:19Speaker 10: still today are are using actual turkey mounts, have real
- 35:23Speaker 10: turkey feathers, and if you're if you're trying to get
- 35:26Speaker 10: him in close, yeah it's it's a big deal.
- 35:28Speaker 1: You're just hoping it don't rain.
- 35:31Speaker 10: Yeah, they get wet.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Oh there's so many guys that they'll say like, wow,
- 35:36Speaker 3: we don't like turkey decoys or turkey decoys don't work
- 35:38Speaker 3: that well and stuff like that. And we've seen a
- 35:40Speaker 3: lot of footage of birds coming in and they're just
- 35:42Speaker 3: like hanging up and hanging up like crazy, and they're like, yeah,
- 35:44Speaker 3: I see, you know, turkey decoays don't work that good,
- 35:47Speaker 3: but they're using some brand of turkey decoys.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It just looks horrible.
- 35:52Speaker 3: And it's like, well, that's the problem, and that's telling
- 35:54Speaker 3: us a lot, and that's kind of driving what we do.
- 35:58Speaker 2: And it's like most.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Of the time, if we can get those guys to switch,
- 36:02Speaker 3: then good things happen.
- 36:04Speaker 1: But I think on anything that's real persnickety and it
- 36:07Speaker 1: has a ton of components, people can always say, well
- 36:09Speaker 1: does that matter, does that matter? Does that matter? And
- 36:11Speaker 1: be like, I can tell you that the sum total matters.
- 36:15Speaker 1: And perhaps there's parts within this whole approach that if
- 36:19Speaker 1: you pulled out it wouldn't affect the outcome, but it's
- 36:21Speaker 1: not discernible. You can't pick the pieces apart. Meaning if
- 36:25Speaker 1: someone says, like, just camouflage really matter, I'm like, you're
- 36:29Speaker 1: never gonna say I would have gotten that had I
- 36:32Speaker 1: not been wearing camo exactly. It's like, I don't know
- 36:37Speaker 1: in every situation if if you call a bull in
- 36:41Speaker 1: or call a turkey in, and you go like, okay,
- 36:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna rerun the universe and start manipulating
- 36:49Speaker 1: slight different things like I wasn't wearing a glove, my
- 36:54Speaker 1: turkey was a little shittier, and then my decoy is
- 36:58Speaker 1: a little bit shittier looking, and then run the scenario
- 37:01Speaker 1: to the point where you identify the exact thing that
- 37:03Speaker 1: had to be right or wrong to make it work.
- 37:06Speaker 1: You don't get there. But if everything's right and you
- 37:10Speaker 1: just know it works, I don't really care about what
- 37:14Speaker 1: parts might have been superfluous. Yeah follow me, Yeah, where
- 37:22Speaker 1: that globe? I don't know. I just got the turkey.
- 37:25Speaker 11: Yeah yeah.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Yeah. That's like with goose hunting.
- 37:29Speaker 3: A lot of it like the hide is so so
- 37:31Speaker 3: so important, and you know, the calling isn't is important
- 37:34Speaker 3: if if you're calling at all, and so it's like
- 37:38Speaker 3: everything really has to be right and you wouldn't want
- 37:40Speaker 3: to start removing any any part and start taking chances.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Yeah, It's like there's no way in the world you
- 37:48Speaker 1: would say that I would have gotten that gobbler if
- 37:51Speaker 1: my decoy wasn't as high quality.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Well, and then also, like Brad is alluding to, you know,
- 37:59Speaker 3: it's like, well, you could probably get a gobbler, but
- 38:03Speaker 3: what do you come into ten yards and really interact
- 38:06Speaker 3: like crazy with the decoy and just have this breathtaking moment.
- 38:09Speaker 3: It's like, well, maybe he would have came into thirty
- 38:11Speaker 3: yards and you could have you know, dumped in with
- 38:13Speaker 3: a shotgun or whatever. Just depends on what level of
- 38:17Speaker 3: really fun and excitement you want to take it to.
- 38:20Speaker 1: I sent you guys that video last year of a
- 38:22Speaker 1: bunch of a bunch of gobblers mounting your posturing him.
- 38:27Speaker 2: Yeah, we try to look away when that happens, but
- 38:30Speaker 2: it's like.
- 38:30Speaker 1: It's kind of hard too.
- 38:32Speaker 12: I supposed to watch that.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Yeah, get your.
- 38:34Speaker 12: Head out of the gutter.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Oh I got one. I got one last bird question,
- 38:38Speaker 1: one last turkey question. If if the paint job's so
- 38:42Speaker 1: realistic and all that, why is there what's up with
- 38:45Speaker 1: using a real fan or not a real fan? I
- 38:47Speaker 1: can't tell if it matters.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah, we've we wanted to make an artificial fan. We
- 38:52Speaker 3: still want to just because it's so durable, because those
- 38:55Speaker 3: are a pain to deal with for sure. But you know,
- 38:59Speaker 3: we haven't been able to make an artificial fan that
- 39:03Speaker 3: really has the right finish and and translucency and and
- 39:06Speaker 3: all that stuff. And and we haven't seen any available
- 39:11Speaker 3: that are that way too. And you know, we have
- 39:13Speaker 3: a spectrometer and we use it occasionally. We probably should
- 39:16Speaker 3: use it more or whatever, but so we can kind
- 39:18Speaker 3: of check the finish and and the reflection on a
- 39:23Speaker 3: real bird or a real fan compared to a decoy
- 39:26Speaker 3: and all that stuff. And we just haven't been able
- 39:29Speaker 3: to come up with a real fan that that's durable,
- 39:34Speaker 3: but we'd love to, you know.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, have you ever thought about doing like map
- 39:38Speaker 1: spinners and buying and selling fans.
- 39:44Speaker 2: There's already a company that does that.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Does you can call them up and buy a Turkey fan?
- 39:48Speaker 3: Well, we we've we sent some customers to them, but
- 39:51Speaker 3: most of our customers will have a you know.
- 39:54Speaker 1: I can stack them, dude, I like every year, I
- 39:57Speaker 1: like go through and and sort them, take the bad ones,
- 40:01Speaker 1: get rid of them, promote the good ones.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I was just dusting off my fan pile the other
- 40:07Speaker 1: day thinking about coming up.
- 40:09Speaker 12: Yeah, turkeys are Turkey fans are one of those things
- 40:11Speaker 12: like I find my stuff every time I clean a bird.
- 40:13Speaker 12: It's sick so hard for to throw it away, you know.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Mm hmm. So you think that. Uh so when you're
- 40:20Speaker 1: setting up, when you guys are setting up, you're setting
- 40:22Speaker 1: up with a real fan if it's a full struck bird,
- 40:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, for sure. Huh you know that some uh
- 40:29Speaker 1: you know that fanning. Some states are starting to come
- 40:32Speaker 1: out with rules about creeping up on turkeys with a
- 40:35Speaker 1: turkey fan.
- 40:36Speaker 12: Yeah, yep.
- 40:38Speaker 1: I think Wisconsin you can't do that anymore.
- 40:40Speaker 12: And I think maybe even in Kansas you can't reap.
- 40:43Speaker 12: But don't quote me on that.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Can't move how they spelled it out, You can't move around.
- 40:48Speaker 1: There's some rule you can't like move around with it.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and a lot of people have been reaping
- 40:53Speaker 3: where they they'll take even ardi KOI and get behind
- 40:56Speaker 3: it and start crawling around. And and I've never done myself,
- 41:00Speaker 3: but I've even my some of my turkey partners have
- 41:03Speaker 3: done it. And they'll do it like with three or
- 41:06Speaker 3: four guys all behind strutters and crawl, you know, crawling up.
- 41:11Speaker 3: And they've had like this huge bunch of toms just
- 41:14Speaker 3: come in and just it's like, you know, it looks
- 41:17Speaker 3: like the Civil War or whatever, you know, and come
- 41:20Speaker 3: in and just start thrashing them and everything, and then
- 41:23Speaker 3: they jump out with shotguns and all that stuff.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 41:26Speaker 3: It sounds kind of crazy and it sounds kind of dangerous.
- 41:28Speaker 3: But yeah, that's that's.
- 41:29Speaker 1: I think that's why there. I think that's why states
- 41:32Speaker 1: are clamping down on it. It's just the risk factor.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we don't want people to do that, for sure.
- 41:38Speaker 1: There's no way, like like I might, there's no way
- 41:40Speaker 1: I'll let my kid crawl around with a turkey fan
- 41:42Speaker 1: on his head, because then my wife be home at
- 41:45Speaker 1: what like once she got to understand, you know, if
- 41:50Speaker 1: he got whatever sprayed by a load of shotgun shells
- 41:55Speaker 1: or load of pellets, and then was asking me about
- 41:58Speaker 1: what happened, and I was like, oh, I told him
- 42:00Speaker 1: to take a Turkey's fan and crawl around out in
- 42:03Speaker 1: the fields just over his face. She's just gonna get mad.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's for sure, So.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I don't do it.
- 42:11Speaker 10: I've got a I've got a design idea for your
- 42:13Speaker 10: turkey fan. Okay, I can't tell it. Okay, it's that
- 42:16Speaker 10: good Okay, I like it.
- 42:20Speaker 1: Uh, Clay, I want you and you and Phillips to
- 42:22Speaker 1: do heat us up with a little turkey calling actions
- 42:24Speaker 1: turkey calling, tell me what you're putting in your mouth?
- 42:27Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 42:27Speaker 10: This so this is I just got these from Jason
- 42:30Speaker 10: this morning. This is the what is this, Jason? That
- 42:34Speaker 10: the tripping hen? Yep, they're usually a little better after
- 42:37Speaker 10: you warm them up a little bit, warm them up
- 42:41Speaker 10: like body temp. I mean, like for a couple of days.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I'm with you. Yeah, that's got a word for.
- 42:48Speaker 1: I can't remember what it is.
- 42:57Speaker 10: I can't hear myself.
- 42:58Speaker 1: It's tough. Your headphones off.
- 43:13Speaker 4: It's a good gobble.
- 43:14Speaker 2: That's great, sounds good.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Your gobbles a little too high pitch?
- 43:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I got a real white call.
- 43:19Speaker 12: Have you ever heard of hen try to gobble?
- 43:23Speaker 1: You know? No, I know people talk about this, but no.
- 43:28Speaker 12: Yeah, it's it's extremely high pitched.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Trying to gobbler. Is it just a hen vocalization?
- 43:33Speaker 12: For sure. I've seen them actually like throw their head forward.
- 43:36Speaker 3: And two years ago I had a Hen come in
- 43:41Speaker 3: in full straut and I was filming by myself.
- 43:45Speaker 2: That was pretty cool. I haven't seen that happen too much.
- 43:48Speaker 1: But it phelps youat this up?
- 43:51Speaker 8: Well you what's your little bird app that you? You
- 43:53Speaker 8: say this isn't a woodpecker? You're no, I'm I just
- 43:58Speaker 8: want to remind you because you're gonna say that it's
- 44:00Speaker 8: not a woodpecker, but I whatever this is I got
- 44:04Speaker 8: Oh goodness.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Are you really trying to do it? I feel like no,
- 44:08Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 44:09Speaker 8: I was just bringing up that I called this woodpecker,
- 44:12Speaker 8: but you reminded me last time that it wasn't.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Okay, sound ideas on. You're not gonna trick it. Hold on,
- 44:19Speaker 1: you don't think it's gonna pick up. He's not gonna
- 44:21Speaker 1: trick it, really do you'll trick so do some hand calling. Okay,
- 44:26Speaker 1: I got it up. It says listening for birds. You'll
- 44:28Speaker 1: trick it with a hen call. Because I can trick
- 44:30Speaker 1: it with a hen call. You gotta get better than that.
- 44:46Speaker 1: I think it's something with being in a room or something. Okay,
- 44:50Speaker 1: phelps you hit it, you stop from it. You hit
- 44:52Speaker 1: We're gonna hit the new woodpecker. Call no, no, hit turkey.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Call?
- 44:54Speaker 1: Oh no, who just did something? He no, I just
- 44:58Speaker 1: took a minute. I got wild turkey. I think it's slow.
- 45:01Speaker 1: I think it's because I finally started calling I'm a
- 45:03Speaker 1: little better than Clay. You call it, okay, hit it, Okay,
- 45:11Speaker 1: he's banging it, Clay, that's a new call. Try something different.
- 45:28Speaker 1: You're not getting it, Phelps, but didn't bring it then,
- 45:45Speaker 1: so I think we got No, it's not that we
- 45:47Speaker 1: just got a problem.
- 45:48Speaker 2: What's the cut? I don't know. It's Jason the what
- 45:51Speaker 2: the cut?
- 45:51Speaker 8: I think he's got. We actually split a bat wing
- 45:54Speaker 8: on that one, so it's a split down the middle.
- 45:56Speaker 8: And this is a combo cut with we nicked the
- 45:58Speaker 8: second layer a little bit on the open side.
- 46:00Speaker 1: On this one.
- 46:02Speaker 8: This is a really really light call, like all prof
- 46:04Speaker 8: and then that one's a little bit yeah, I mean
- 46:06Speaker 8: by light call so we can layer in. You know,
- 46:09Speaker 8: most of your tricky calls, there are a lot of doubles,
- 46:11Speaker 8: but I would say the majority of your tricky calls
- 46:13Speaker 8: are going to be triple three pieces of latex. So
- 46:16Speaker 8: like when this one be an ultra light the new
- 46:18Speaker 8: Rain series, it's got prof you know, prophylactic, profilactic, and
- 46:22Speaker 8: a very light piece of latex on top that's cut.
- 46:26Speaker 8: So this call is going to call way lighter than
- 46:28Speaker 8: like a call that Clay has, you know, like three five.
- 46:32Speaker 8: You know, now you're stacking latex. It's almost twice as
- 46:34Speaker 8: thick as this for every piece. So it's to try
- 46:36Speaker 8: to you know, have a louder you can cut on
- 46:38Speaker 8: that call up better located, a little bit louder where
- 46:40Speaker 8: this is going to be more of your real intri kate,
- 46:42Speaker 8: you know, low volume bubble clucks, yelps.
- 46:44Speaker 1: But lighter is easier for beginners to learn. You don't
- 46:48Speaker 1: have to learn how to force as much air.
- 46:49Speaker 8: Yeah, and you know you can get into like different
- 46:52Speaker 8: styles of tricky callers, you know, like the old school
- 46:54Speaker 8: guys they call like a huff style where you're using
- 46:55Speaker 8: like a lot of diaphragm, a lot of air. Where
- 46:58Speaker 8: like these new calls, it's like just real light air.
- 47:00Speaker 8: You're not having to just you know, get rid of
- 47:03Speaker 8: so much so much air. O can't rip on that
- 47:05Speaker 8: one a little bit. This No, no, not the woodpecker yet.
- 47:09Speaker 8: I liked you did a woodpecker. The perf not real
- 47:21Speaker 8: good this morning, Clay, you're digging around. I know what
- 47:23Speaker 8: you got nowt Now he's got the casper, which will
- 47:28Speaker 8: be like our ultra light.
- 47:31Speaker 1: Like ghost cuts like.
- 47:31Speaker 14: Kiki's Merlin's Merlin's perking right up on that one.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So it likes a little higher pitch call. Well, like
- 47:49Speaker 1: I said, it likes everything when you're outside.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Well, I remember the.
- 47:53Speaker 1: One time you were sitting on a tree and you
- 47:54Speaker 1: had like forty two birds going no, like like, I
- 47:57Speaker 1: think it's something weird happens when you're outside any like
- 48:00Speaker 1: any kind of turkey column, it will usually like picker,
- 48:02Speaker 1: start bringing it. Yeah, now let me see your let
- 48:04Speaker 1: me see your woodpecker. So this is our new guy
- 48:06Speaker 1: work with James Harrison again. But I want, I want
- 48:08Speaker 1: Clay tell them our woodpecker problem, the woodpecker debate.
- 48:11Speaker 10: Which one man about I rebuild woodpeckers.
- 48:16Speaker 1: About my blue jay call and all that.
- 48:19Speaker 10: Oh just like just just like shot shot gobbling calls shot.
- 48:24Speaker 1: I'll tell you what me and Clay's debate is about
- 48:26Speaker 1: shot gobblin.
- 48:27Speaker 4: I think that.
- 48:31Speaker 1: I think that a good shot gobble is something that
- 48:33Speaker 1: gets shot gobbles. Yeah, Clay thinks a good shot gobble
- 48:36Speaker 1: is something that sounds exactly like accurate, like a bird
- 48:40Speaker 1: an owl. Right, I don't care if it sounds like
- 48:44Speaker 1: I had, Like I like, hey, if you want shot gobbles.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I've said, so you'd be you.
- 48:54Speaker 10: Want if you want to about two different things.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Now, I'm moderate. If we're talking about turkey hunt we're
- 49:00Speaker 1: talking about turkey decoys, We're talking about turkey calls. Okay, right,
- 49:05Speaker 1: we're talking about turkey hunting, right right, So set in
- 49:08Speaker 1: the scene talking about turkey hunting. Okay, we're here to
- 49:11Speaker 1: talk about turkey hunting. Yes, been talking about turkey hunting.
- 49:14Speaker 1: Shot gobbles are elicited by in my view, shock op
- 49:18Speaker 1: gobbles are best elicited by like sudden, very sharp, disruptive sounds.
- 49:28Speaker 10: Correct, Yeah, okay, Okay, are you done?
- 49:31Speaker 1: He is not that turkey is not sitting there thinking God,
- 49:37Speaker 1: was that a real albel He's not, but he when
- 49:41Speaker 1: he gobbled, he gobbles, he gobbles quicker and he can think.
- 49:46Speaker 10: Yeah, I agree with you. The difference between what you're
- 49:51Speaker 10: doing and what I'm trying to do and what I
- 49:54Speaker 10: appreciate and realism and all levels of woodsmanship is the
- 49:58Speaker 10: difference between in casting and fly fishing. The difference because
- 50:04Speaker 10: when I go into the woods, it's it's it's like
- 50:07Speaker 10: it's like now, not necessarily me. I'm not the best
- 50:10Speaker 10: out hooter nor the best turkey caller. But you go
- 50:13Speaker 10: down with some of some of these guys from Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas.
- 50:18Speaker 10: These guys that man, they out hoot with their mouth.
- 50:21Speaker 10: They sound like a turkey. I mean, you just fit
- 50:23Speaker 10: into nature. So it is really a stylistic thing.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I could go out and do a spin casting.
- 50:28Speaker 1: Fly casting.
- 50:29Speaker 10: I mean it's the same thing like.
- 50:31Speaker 1: You think, you think a really good bad you think
- 50:33Speaker 1: there's you think a really good bass fisherman style, a
- 50:36Speaker 1: really good bass fisherman that can land that that can
- 50:38Speaker 1: land three eight times.
- 50:40Speaker 10: That was a great analogy. You see what I'm saying.
- 50:42Speaker 10: I mean it's like in the woods. I don't want
- 50:45Speaker 10: people to know, Wow, Steven Ell just slammed his.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Cardiff or has an air horn.
- 50:51Speaker 10: Ye, you're like, you just want to sound like I
- 50:53Speaker 10: was what I was resenting.
- 50:55Speaker 1: And I resent this more than your take on owl
- 50:57Speaker 1: hooting and all that. No, I appreciate it, good owl hoot.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I'm saying, I don't think it in terms of getting
- 51:03Speaker 1: a gobble.
- 51:04Speaker 10: I don't think it does.
- 51:05Speaker 1: I take offense at your thing that you were going
- 51:08Speaker 1: to go down some path that like that that somehow
- 51:12Speaker 1: fly casting is somehow like more poetic or.
- 51:18Speaker 10: When when I'm in the woods, I want to I
- 51:21Speaker 10: want to be I don't want someone on the next ridge.
- 51:24Speaker 1: To go that dude just out and you think spin
- 51:26Speaker 1: fishing is louder.
- 51:30Speaker 10: I thought this was going to be the best analogy
- 51:32Speaker 10: ever done.
- 51:34Speaker 1: Would both of you go just what.
- 51:35Speaker 10: People say, like you're you're going to the river to fish.
- 51:39Speaker 10: A spin caster is just trying to get the job done.
- 51:42Speaker 10: A fly fisherman is trying to do as are bobbing
- 51:46Speaker 10: their heads here. So I'm just saying, yeah, you can
- 51:49Speaker 10: get a turkey to gobble all different ways. I agree
- 51:51Speaker 10: with that, but there's some there's some art, there's some
- 51:54Speaker 10: new craft inside of you know, your crow call, your
- 51:59Speaker 10: alcohol play.
- 52:00Speaker 1: It took my croll call and wrote this is a
- 52:02Speaker 1: blue jay call on it?
- 52:04Speaker 4: Oh disrespect?
- 52:06Speaker 1: Yeah, well no, because it is. That's all Him'm trying
- 52:07Speaker 1: to replicate it.
- 52:09Speaker 10: See that would have helped me the first time I
- 52:11Speaker 10: heard him blow it, if I would have known he
- 52:12Speaker 10: was trying to do a blue jay.
- 52:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:16Speaker 8: We had this conversation multiple times just at the show, like, well,
- 52:18Speaker 8: what's the difference between the wood alt hooter and the
- 52:21Speaker 8: pro I said, well, the wood owt hooter actually sounds better.
- 52:24Speaker 8: It's cheaper, but for a hunting call, I want to
- 52:26Speaker 8: be able to crank that thing up, not sound quite
- 52:29Speaker 8: like an owl, but be able to reach the next
- 52:31Speaker 8: ridge over and get that response and still kind of
- 52:33Speaker 8: sound like, you know, the best alcohol we can build.
- 52:35Speaker 8: And so there's there's a lot of that, like just
- 52:37Speaker 8: being the best hunting call. But then like you know,
- 52:39Speaker 8: we had that conversation with Dave, like not willing to
- 52:42Speaker 8: cut any corners and just be the absolute best decoy
- 52:44Speaker 8: where on calls, especially you know, shock gobble calls in particular,
- 52:49Speaker 8: I'm willing to cut a few more corners where like,
- 52:52Speaker 8: you know, the new triple locator, it's twice as loud
- 52:54Speaker 8: as anything out there. Yeah, I could have made it
- 52:56Speaker 8: maybe a touch more accurate, but it's just dialed in.
- 53:00Speaker 8: It still sounds like the woodpecker. It still sounds like
- 53:02Speaker 8: an owl scream, but I designed it for more volumes,
- 53:05Speaker 8: so maybe we lost a little bit of that quality.
- 53:08Speaker 2: So that's fly fishing. But it's like you're on.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, trying.
- 53:13Speaker 2: To cut it's still technically fly fishing.
- 53:16Speaker 8: So you're you're gonna you're gonna blow on a pilliated call? Yeah,
- 53:19Speaker 8: or what are our hunting piliated woodpecker?
- 53:21Speaker 1: Call?
- 53:21Speaker 8: Is very loud, you guys are Day's probably gonna really
- 53:25Speaker 8: hate it.
- 53:25Speaker 4: But uh but I don't know.
- 53:28Speaker 8: We had this in Kansas last year and it did
- 53:30Speaker 8: not pick up, and so I'm a little but there's
- 53:33Speaker 8: a lot of weirdness about what picks up and don't
- 53:34Speaker 8: pick up because what I found, like.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Like outside inside is a big difference.
- 53:41Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Okay, Oh that sounds good though, man, pick up.
- 53:52Speaker 8: My favorite thing to do is like come down out
- 53:54Speaker 8: of my office. I think all the workers are just
- 53:56Speaker 8: down there putting stuff together, and.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Just hit them with a woodpecker call.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Hit it again. That sounds good though, Oh yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 8: And then this, uh James Harrison, the out hooter, you know,
- 54:10Speaker 8: wins all the contests.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Matter of fact, you know our olhooter.
- 54:12Speaker 4: He just told me.
- 54:13Speaker 8: Out of the twenty nine people calling it the Grand
- 54:16Speaker 8: National Championship, twenty four of them, I think, O, what
- 54:19Speaker 8: ol hooter? Out of twenty nine, that's seriously yeah, like
- 54:22Speaker 8: legit phelps out hooter.
- 54:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:25Speaker 8: And then we got the al scream, which this is
- 54:27Speaker 8: his thing. Twenty four out of twenty nine guys are
- 54:29Speaker 8: using your ol hooter. According to James Harrison on the
- 54:31Speaker 8: stage at the NWTF convention, do.
- 54:34Speaker 1: You think it's fair that they could be using any
- 54:36Speaker 1: kind of call at all for I mean for a competition.
- 54:40Speaker 1: What do you mean fair?
- 54:41Speaker 8: Fair as in like, uh, I would think if you
- 54:44Speaker 8: were having an al hooting competition, you'd have to also
- 54:47Speaker 8: have a no just raw voice.
- 54:50Speaker 10: Well, that's a whole different competition, and they.
- 54:53Speaker 15: They've them more towards the calls they have. Man, Hey,
- 54:58Speaker 15: in Arkansas, Bentonville, Arkansas, March ninth, we're having a natural
- 55:03Speaker 15: voice out hooting contest at the Black Burbonanza. We are
- 55:06Speaker 15: making it into the world's premiere natural voice out hooting contest.
- 55:11Speaker 1: So so you're so they divide out natural voice. Yeah,
- 55:14Speaker 1: that's all we do. Okay, hit me, hit me with one.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Clay Oh, I.
- 55:22Speaker 10: Could never do him on call. I had a guy
- 55:24Speaker 10: to show the other day come up to me and
- 55:26Speaker 10: was like, hey, Clay, give me an alhot. It was terrible.
- 55:29Speaker 10: I was embarrassed.
- 55:30Speaker 1: I was like, get here home, everybody be quiet, give
- 55:34Speaker 1: me another one.
- 55:49Speaker 10: So I didn't pick up.
- 55:50Speaker 1: No, it's not doing well. No, because I know you're
- 55:53Speaker 1: I know yours pick up and what was killing Clay
- 55:55Speaker 1: or what was killing Seth Morris is we are calling? Uh,
- 55:59Speaker 1: we were calling owls.
- 56:00Speaker 12: You were there.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Seth was there and he could just get the owl
- 56:04Speaker 1: to come in, get the owl to answer, but the
- 56:06Speaker 1: app wouldn't pick it up, and he had to keep
- 56:08Speaker 1: messing and messing and messing, and he had to change
- 56:10Speaker 1: his call so the app would pick up, and it
- 56:13Speaker 1: wound up being in the in the gurgle at the end. Oh,
- 56:17Speaker 1: he had to manipulate his own girl. He had to
- 56:20Speaker 1: like customize it to try to get picked off by
- 56:22Speaker 1: the app. But outside yours picks off. But I don't know.
- 56:25Speaker 11: Yeah, do that one again.
- 56:36Speaker 1: I want to hear that again. That sounds good.
- 56:38Speaker 4: Doctor Woodpecker, do the il scream.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Let me hear the I want to hear the woodpecker. Get.
- 56:41Speaker 1: I want to to pill.
- 56:42Speaker 8: I'll scream. Will just be like a pitch break. You've
- 56:44Speaker 8: all heard the owl scream like early in the morning.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Now here's why I think before you do this, I
- 56:48Speaker 1: think that like sure sounded like a bird.
- 56:50Speaker 4: That's great.
- 56:51Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking about. Forgetting gob It's like it's
- 56:55Speaker 1: like it's so all of a sudden, and it's so
- 56:59Speaker 1: you can't ignore it, yep, because the thing is, how
- 57:01Speaker 1: many times in most places, if you're sitting there waiting
- 57:04Speaker 1: for you to light out, first thing you're gonna hear
- 57:06Speaker 1: in a lot of airs, you're gonna hear a northern
- 57:07Speaker 1: cardinal and he's gonna be the first thing in the morning.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And then you're gonna hear crows, right, they're just gonna
- 57:16Speaker 1: be like if you're paying attention, there's always a carverywhere
- 57:19Speaker 1: going off, and I just think it loses its.
- 57:22Speaker 8: Yeah, where that's where the woodpecker, Like you do the
- 57:24Speaker 8: pretty and like when you're out hunting, you can literally
- 57:28Speaker 8: hit the first one and be done and get the
- 57:29Speaker 8: same response like he's already gobbling from that one.
- 57:32Speaker 4: You know.
- 57:32Speaker 8: But back to Clay's point, I want to be somewhat
- 57:34Speaker 8: accurate and like finish out sounded like a woodpecker, so
- 57:37Speaker 8: you finish Hey, could.
- 57:38Speaker 1: It not be?
- 57:39Speaker 10: I think there's an argument to be made that realism
- 57:43Speaker 10: might make a difference, because like, if you're hunting a
- 57:46Speaker 10: super smart, wary bird that's had four years of hunting pressure,
- 57:50Speaker 10: and you walk up there with an air horn and
- 57:54Speaker 10: and he's heard he's not coming, the truck pull up
- 57:57Speaker 10: and maybe he gobbles at it, but he's and I mean,
- 58:00Speaker 10: I don't he doesn't have the brain power to think, oh,
- 58:02Speaker 10: that's Steve Arnell over there, but he's just like maybe
- 58:06Speaker 10: you know.
- 58:07Speaker 1: That's the thing I do wonder about. Is I wonder
- 58:09Speaker 1: about the difference because we're talking. That's two things. That's
- 58:12Speaker 1: eliciting a gobble okay, And then there's is he gonna
- 58:15Speaker 1: come over like does he just did he just add
- 58:17Speaker 1: something to his knowledge base where it's like that wasn't
- 58:20Speaker 1: the real I gobbled? But yeah, I used to get
- 58:23Speaker 1: mega gobbles off of a rabbit distress call. I mean
- 58:28Speaker 1: mega like way off gobbles. But then I'm thinking, Okay,
- 58:32Speaker 1: he gobbled, But is he really gonna come mosying over
- 58:35Speaker 1: here later? Like you know, look, habits die, Yeah, well
- 58:38Speaker 1: you do like a rabbit, I would just go right
- 58:41Speaker 1: and you get gobbles. But is he is he then
- 58:44Speaker 1: put in his head like that to me, is not
- 58:47Speaker 1: an area I'm going to go to. I think over
- 58:50Speaker 1: yonder where the rabbits die. Yet Yeah, that's no mount
- 58:53Speaker 1: of hand calling, no mount of hand calling from that area.
- 58:56Speaker 1: It's going to feel right to me because I just
- 58:58Speaker 1: log that as like I gobble to it, but you're
- 59:02Speaker 1: not could talk me to go in there?
- 59:03Speaker 8: Yeah, the same reason like Eastern Washington, Kyle Howell's work
- 59:06Speaker 8: great for locating, especially later in the day. But you're like,
- 59:09Speaker 8: if you want to try to call that burden, like
- 59:10Speaker 8: in my mind at least the picture in painting, like,
- 59:12Speaker 8: why is this burd gonna come home all the time?
- 59:14Speaker 4: Man?
- 59:14Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 59:15Speaker 3: The only thing I would add is like I do
- 59:16Speaker 3: agree that there's something to be said for a short
- 59:19Speaker 3: call to get a shot gobble, because then you can
- 59:21Speaker 3: hear them gobble, you know, which is like if you
- 59:24Speaker 3: do a long drawn out call, it's like, hey, well,
- 59:26Speaker 3: I mean maybe you guys don't have a problem I
- 59:28Speaker 3: do with my hearing, like I gotta stop quickly. It's
- 59:30Speaker 3: I can hear him. But also then you know where
- 59:33Speaker 3: he's at, you could go, you could go to him.
- 59:35Speaker 3: And then I also agree one hundred percent with what
- 59:37Speaker 3: you're saying about how they kind of can't help themselves.
- 59:40Speaker 3: Like if you watch you know, three Tom's gobble, and
- 59:43Speaker 3: it appears that they're gobbling at exactly the same time,
- 59:47Speaker 3: but if you watch carefully, it's always one of them gobbled. First,
- 59:50Speaker 3: you know, there's two ors just a split second behind,
- 59:53Speaker 3: and that is just sort of an involuntary response, and
- 59:56Speaker 3: that can be the same thing I think with the
- 59:57Speaker 3: shot gobble.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Okay, hit the so oh I want to I want
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: to add on that. The thing that causes tension between
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: me and my turkey hunting friends is it they think
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: that I start walking too quickly after making my shot
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: gobble noise, Joannie gets irritated. I don't give it enough beats.
- 1:00:17Speaker 8: But I'm like, he would have already gobbled. Yeah, I'm
- 1:00:19Speaker 8: on team Renela on this one.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: Like shot you don't need to stay in there for
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: a minute.
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: Even five ten seconds, Like that's too much. If he gobbles,
- 1:00:26Speaker 8: it's on his own. I'll do it, I'll go I'll
- 1:00:30Speaker 8: be like on.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm walking on set, man, That's why I walked
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: till twenty I'm like, dude, you might hear a gobble,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: but it's not never related.
- 1:00:41Speaker 16: Dear.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you're just regular listening. You're not listening.
- 1:00:46Speaker 13: Man.
- 1:00:47Speaker 10: The best turkey hunters that I've ever hunted with do
- 1:00:51Speaker 10: very little early morning shot goblin. I mean I think
- 1:00:57Speaker 10: there's a there's more.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Depends so much on the air area, man.
- 1:01:01Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, just just the patients that I see in
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: some of these guys that I mean, they're not well
- 1:01:07Speaker 10: known people, just like really good turkey hunters. Man, they
- 1:01:11Speaker 10: let that turkey gobble on his own most of the time.
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: And I mean they carry a shot gobble or can
- 1:01:15Speaker 10: owl or crow with their mouth and and use that.
- 1:01:19Speaker 10: But I would say the number one way to identify
- 1:01:23Speaker 10: a beginner or novice turkey hunter is how much they're
- 1:01:27Speaker 10: shot using shot gobble.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: It's too dependent. Sure, if you're in a high density
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: area whatever. If you're like out in the never ending
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Ponderosa pine grassland stuff right and you and it's cute,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: you're gonna go miles between anything.
- 1:01:45Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And I think we're talking about too.
- 1:01:49Speaker 11: It's just kind of hunt.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Yeah, You're like, you're like somewhere out in this ten
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: square miles there might be a gobbler. And if I'm
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: gonna find a bird over the next two days, I'm
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: gonna have to hunt very aggressively and try to get
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: a because any mine is sitting here listening is like
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to find a bird. Yeah. It's just different.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:08Speaker 10: More of what I'm talking about is back East hunting.
- 1:02:11Speaker 10: Hunting a bird that you maybe you know, the smaller ground,
- 1:02:14Speaker 10: you might be spending your whole morning in a you know,
- 1:02:18Speaker 10: a square mile or less or you know, maybe one
- 1:02:20Speaker 10: hundred and sixty acres. Man, you're gonna be You're gonna
- 1:02:23Speaker 10: play the patient game, all.
- 1:02:26Speaker 8: Right, go on, So I'm gonna try the James Harrison
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: is a pro with this thing, but we developed it
- 1:02:30Speaker 8: as an oul screamer as well.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Oh that gets them.
- 1:02:37Speaker 8: I mean just once again, just big loud bursts. Like
- 1:02:39Speaker 8: I said, I probably just did that call. No justice,
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: that's his side. I was more I want a woodpecker call.
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: But now that right there is for getting gobbles, just
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: high pitched. What you do with them, what you call
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: that the spincaster, no what like that gets a gobble.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: What you do with them afterward is up to you.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: But that's gonna get a gobbyl Yeah, And that's that's
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: why I in this call. Like I said, we could
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: have way more or maybe not on the ile screamers.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I had been on the woodpecker.
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: You know, I had more accurate sounds, but then we
- 1:03:04Speaker 8: kept adding more volume, made it loud because like I say,
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: I'm I'm a hunter at heart. I just want these
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: things to answer, so I can start the game and
- 1:03:10Speaker 8: then go from there. There's two contests. There's two tournaments.
- 1:03:14Speaker 8: I'm trying to figure out how to conduct. I want
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: to have a world I want to have a glassing invitational.
- 1:03:23Speaker 10: I love that where you have set out, not set.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Out, Okay, I want it to be real. So I
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: want to have a glassing invitational where you go to
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: a good area and there's judges and to score a point,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: you so to find an original find, you put a scope.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: You put a spotting scope on it, and the judge comes, looks,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: verifies to find and that's like one hundred points now
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: one betted next to it or whatever those are fifties
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: or twenty fives. Once you make a find, the judge
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: sort of like declares that that find area closed or
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: everyone's operating out of a little structure like a little.
- 1:04:08Speaker 10: Beach tent, so they have the opportunity to find it.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: So you don't know, so all the competitors can't tell
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: where someone's looking. So figure that out, and like you
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: get a point, and you set up at daybreak and
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: you have till eleven, and it's like the World Glassing Championship,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: like it I love it to be a great compound competition.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: The other exciting to watch. No, I would love it.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: I would love it.
- 1:04:33Speaker 10: I could be like a golf commentator.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I thought about it, hide little things out, but I
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: don't think it should be like that, because stuff pops.
- 1:04:41Speaker 10: If everybody was looking at the same landscape, it would
- 1:04:44Speaker 10: be fair.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: No, but you want to be an area, and I
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: know I know right where I would hold it. I
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: know right the hill, I know the mount, the peak
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: I would go to to conduct it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 10: Dude, listen, I'll be one of the commentators. I will
- 1:04:58Speaker 10: on the live stream and then we'll have have like
- 1:05:00Speaker 10: roped off with people along the sides, like a golf tournament,
- 1:05:03Speaker 10: and every time somebody does a find will and I'll
- 1:05:06Speaker 10: be like, oh, that was a beautiful fine.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: By the other, my other tournament is the World Shot
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Gobbling Invitational. And I don't know how to conduct it.
- 1:05:17Speaker 10: Hmmm. Yeah, you'd have like categories like just a listening
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: freestyle unlimited freestyle. It's freestyle unlimited listening gobbles. I don't
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: know how to make it equal though.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: Another nail bitter.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, who can elicit the most? It have to
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: be like days long to rule out to rule out
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: incidentals or not not to rule incidentals, to rule out
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: the freaks. It had to be ten days, you know,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: big commitment to be like, oh, he just got the
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: good spot that morning. But over time you're gonna see
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: you're Over time, you're gonna see a champion emerged, a trend,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: someone that just can listen gobbles, and it's probably going
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: to be, unfortunately, a dude with an airhorn.
- 1:06:05Speaker 10: It's going to put to rist all of our theories.
- 1:06:08Speaker 10: If you can figure out how to give away a
- 1:06:10Speaker 10: truck at both of those you, I am.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Going to do the glassing the glassing invitational. I'm serious about.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: I think you could pull off a glassing invitational for sure. Oh, Dave,
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: you know another thing I wanted to ask about. Just
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: change the subject a little bit. You guys are you
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: guys decoys are? Tell me about American made decoys.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: All our Treky decoys are made in America, always have been.
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: And uh, it's difficult, and it's expensive, and.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: But the quality is really good. They're super durable.
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: And we love our crew and they're good, they're good people,
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: and that's just how we decided to do it.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: And and but you could, there would have been an
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: easier way to do it. Like, it's not like out
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: of necessity.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Yeah, oh my gosh, I mean like we're I mean,
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: we're I'm almost the only USA MA Turkey decoy.
- 1:07:07Speaker 10: There might be a few Q the national anthem phill, but.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Most decoys are pain are what overseas.
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: They're blow molded, you know, polyathlene made in China, and
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: you know there's nothing wrong with that. It makes the
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: lightweight and and inexpensive and all that stuff.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: But can you pull that mic a little bit closer?
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: Dave?
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Sorry, Mike, microphone close. I'm sorry, You're good, Thank you?
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Oh Dave? How much you've been here? And have you
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: been hearing most of everything today?
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: Much better without the without the headphones? He that no, No,
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: I did.
- 1:07:43Speaker 13: A dog.
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but yeah, it is. We're able to make like
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: a really really super durable decoy, which is kind of nice.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: I mean, like, we have one video of Brad shooting
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: a decoy and it's on purpose, It wasn't an accident
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: or anything. He's shut out of decoy with heavy shot
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: from ten yards away and goes and picks up the
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: decoy and you absolutely cannot find a mark on it
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: anywhere and you pick it up. He picks it up
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: and shakes it and it's just absolutely full of shot.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: But it's and I've shot several well, not several, I
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: guess twice. I've shot through Tom's and had the arrow
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: go into the decoy kind of you know the arrow, Yeah,
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: and then pull the arrow, pull the arrow out, and
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: and you can't really see where the arrow was.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: It's like that Arnold Schwarzenegger had to fight in uh yeah,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: that silver guy.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, terminator, Yeah, you heard him.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: It just goes back to normal.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's not quite like that, but almost the same. Yeah.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: But when you started out, you know, why does it
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: wind up being overseason and why not? I mean people
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: launch them overseas, like if you if you started when
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you start out, you're just making a few of them, right,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: So obviously when you were making a few of them yourself,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: you like you didn't even think about whether you'd make
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: them overseas or make them in America because you're just
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: making a handful. Yeah, and there's some point at which
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: it would just you'd have to decide that it would
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: now make sense to have a manufactured elsewhere or not. Right, Yeah.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: I mean so far, we haven't had any major, major
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: plans to make any Turkey decoys overseas, but it might
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: be something that we'd offer, like especially if we could.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: You know, we just want to offer as many different
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: options as possible for people, so you know, you can
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: make it lighter weight and less expensive. So and the
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: thing is is, like like our half strut Jake, we
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: had a guy that just loved that decoy and thought
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: it was the greatest thing ever. And he kind of
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: told us that he he made this offer to us
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: where he would promote it and but he would need
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: like this huge percentage of all the sales, and we
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: kind of told him to take a hike. And next thing,
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: you know, he took it straight to China and did
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: a really really hard campaign, like got to the point
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: where he had most people convinced that we uh copied him.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: It took us.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: Three years of literally like one by one content contacting
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: people that were just you know, promoting his decoy like crazy,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: of telling him the truth and setting them straight, and
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: took us three years to recover from from that. And
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: they eventually he eventually went out of business and all
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: that stuff because people are basically good and our customers
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: are are unbelievably great to us and they stood by
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: us and you know, learn the truth and everything like that.
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: So we we deal with that.
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: And there's we have other decoys where you know, these
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: companies that we've known of for a long long time
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: and all of a sudden they have a Turkey decoy
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: and it's just like, it looks so much like our decoy.
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: It's just ridiculous and that that happens and it's kind
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: of flattering, but it's kind of annoying too and stuff
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: But and those are.
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: All made overseas, so that's a little bit difficult because
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: now all of a sudden they're able to charge a
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: lot less for it. And the thing is, it's like
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: because we make decoys uh in America and have made
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: goose decoys in America, so we have to we do
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: have to charge a lot because the materials are very
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: very expensive, like that material that's so durable is super
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: super expensive, and so we do have to charge a
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: lot unfortunately for our for our decoys. So then the
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: competitors they've really benefited from that because now they they'll
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: make it a Dey and China and they'll be like, well,
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: you know, DSD is charging you know, you know, two
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: hundred dollars for a Turkey decoy, so we could probably
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: charge one eighty or something like it, whereas our costs
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: are dramatically different.
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: But you guys don't like, you don't package and tell,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: you don't like overtell that it's all designed and made
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: in America. I mean, you're sure, says DSD decoy's USA,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: but I could be they're based in the USA.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, we probably should push that a little harder.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Especially especially if people are trying to bone you over.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean point taking, Yeah, we probably should.
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: My idea for the tail fan was American flag.
- 1:12:48Speaker 17: Yeah yeah, Paul with with with f HF you guys, uh,
- 1:12:56Speaker 17: you guys got you guys fight it all the time
- 1:12:59Speaker 17: on made in America.
- 1:13:00Speaker 12: We do.
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: And we're sort of in the same boat with Day
- 1:13:04Speaker 6: where we started out. I started out making this in
- 1:13:07Speaker 6: a spare bedroom, so certainly wasn't going to have anything
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: made overseas. I was doing custom work and really kind
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: of started in the tactical world where that was much
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: more of a thing like hunting versus tactical. The customers
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: typically want to see a US made product, I think
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: in the tactical space. In the tactical space for.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: Sure, because you're dealing with people who are like, like
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: by definition like patriot, patriotic.
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: Yeah, patriots and preppers and just tactical guys former military,
- 1:13:39Speaker 6: current military that kind of stuff, law enforcement, and then
- 1:13:43Speaker 6: moving into the hunting market. I think it's come to
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: a point now where there is a significant amount of
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: the customers that do want to see a US made product,
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: But there's also a lot and we deal with it
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: all the time where people are like, well, I can
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: buy buy it for twenty dollars on Amazon, you know,
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: something that's close or a direct copy like Dave talks about,
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: And you know, it just depends on the customer really
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: and what they put as important to them.
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: But the part I don't get about it is when
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: you talk about the cost thing, how you're talking about
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: shipping it halfway around the world, Like, how does that
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: you'd think that if you took a person from outer space,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: like you take a guy comes from Mars and you're like, hey,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: I want to ask you question, what do you think
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: costs more me to sell a thing here in Montana? Okay,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: it was made in America, Or would it cost more
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: if I had it made on another continent halfway around
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: the world and then scent it over here. That person
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: would say, oh, it'd be a lot cheaper to make
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: it here. Why would you mail it all the way
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: across the world.
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: Well, I think that it probably used to be. The
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: biggest thing is the labor costs overseas. You can just
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: you know, people, I don't know what they're our wages
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: in China or Bangladesh, but it's certainly not as much.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: As a dollar or two.
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: The people that are making stuff here in the US,
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: and all of our stuff is made here, and so
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: you know, the factories we use are paying their people
- 1:15:13Speaker 6: well and treating their people well, and they have you know,
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: their middle class jobs, and many of those have disappeared
- 1:15:21Speaker 6: over the years.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: Where you know, it used to be.
- 1:15:24Speaker 6: The textile market, you know, mills, sewing, everything was done here.
- 1:15:29Speaker 6: And this was brought in, you know, as far back
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: as right after the Revolutionary War for reasons for like
- 1:15:35Speaker 6: national security and just independence to have all of that
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: stuff done here locally, just like weapons manufacturing, All of
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: that stuff was brought here. But you know, starting in
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: the eighties, I just disappeared out of the country. So
- 1:15:50Speaker 6: it's really hard to find factories in the US that
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: can do a good job of it at scale, at
- 1:15:55Speaker 6: the scale we need especially. I mean many of these places,
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: you know, they will take in order, but they want
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: you order half a million of something in order to
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: make it worth their time, whereas you know, we're just
- 1:16:08Speaker 6: not at that scale, and the costs are significantly higher,
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: and it just makes it very hard, you know, both
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: the materials as well as that the labor to actually
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: put something together. You know, we do our best, again
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: sort of coming from that tactical world in the even
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: the Bay Amendment compliance stuff, which is a defense requirement
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: for buying military gear, you know, made in the US,
- 1:16:39Speaker 6: many of the materials have to be made here, and
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: so we do our best to source those materials here.
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: Being that they're sourced here, they don't have to go
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: overseas to be put in place. But we do struggle
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: sometimes define the best materials in the US, because I
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: don't know whether we.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Say the best materials in the US, you mean the
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: best materials produced in.
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: The US, correct, And there are some things that just
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: aren't made here anymore. Certain things, or if they are
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: made here, they may not be as good because that
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: technology has been exported over the last thirty years and
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: there just isn't a way to get it made here.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: A stupid example is our zipper poles. Like I almost
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: bought a machine to make our little molded zipper poles
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: on a cord, because there's maybe one of your listeners knows,
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: but I cannot find a place anywhere in the US
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: to have those made. The only closest thing I found
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: was a machine that I would have had to order
- 1:17:43Speaker 6: from China and get here to make those one at
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: a time. And they just mold a zipper pool.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: What party talking about just.
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: The poles on.
- 1:17:51Speaker 6: I mean that's why I use bump the cord and
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: the knotted cord on all the zippers because I mean
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: on our little pouches, we do a little plastic zipper pool.
- 1:18:00Speaker 8: Yeah, And you mean there's no one in America making
- 1:18:03Speaker 8: that or that you.
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: Found, not that I've found.
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: I mean you can find a piece of cord with
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: some shrink tube on it, but you know, like a
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: molded nice you know, something you can put a logo
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: in and you know, make it look nice. There just isn't.
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: That's just one example. But there are fabrics that we use,
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: and we use a few of them that are made overseas,
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: but many of those are done that way because, you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: to be honest, many of the best, like bag manufacturers,
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: are in Vietnam because that's where all the technology is,
- 1:18:33Speaker 6: it's where all the talent is over there. It is
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: a considered a good job. It's a professional job to
- 1:18:41Speaker 6: have that job, and these people work in the industry
- 1:18:43Speaker 6: for a long time and get good at it. In
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: the US, it's very hard to find the labor to
- 1:18:49Speaker 6: do that, and so, you know, to be honest, you know,
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: many of the factories end up hiring folks who have
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: immigrated to this country or brought that expertise with them, yeah,
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: or you know, have had family members that work, you know,
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: have worked in that industry for years and kind of
- 1:19:05Speaker 6: come up with it.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: But those are fewer and fewer and fewer, it seems like.
- 1:19:08Speaker 6: So it's just a it's a weird self perpetuating problem
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: trying to find find both the materials as well as
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: the labor and the talent to get that done in
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: the States. And it's expensive.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: So if if everything, if everything of f HF gear
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: is made in the USA. Does that Does that mean
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: that you can't buy but you can still buy a
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: material made somewhere else or is that not true? Yeah?
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: I mean technically.
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: For us to say made in the USA, you know,
- 1:19:40Speaker 6: virtually all of it has to be here, and we
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: do our best to source everything locally, you know, domestically,
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: like I said, like zipper poles.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: You know, there's.
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: Please reach out if you know somebody who will make those,
- 1:19:53Speaker 6: but you know, for the most part we do our best.
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: And then you know, there's the difference would be like
- 1:19:59Speaker 6: assembled in the say, where you might have you know,
- 1:20:02Speaker 6: components like say the shoulder harness and the pouch made
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: in two different countries and brought here and put together,
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: and that would be assembled in the US. Or if
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: you bought everything, all of your materials from overseas sources
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: and brought those here and sewed them together, that might
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: be assembled in the US. The other option would be
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: in it. We've struggled even with production companies. We had
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: one for a while that went out of business. Thankfully,
- 1:20:31Speaker 6: unbeknownst to us, they were sending stuff to Mexico.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: We were on the slide.
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: Yeah, we were making and paying for them to make
- 1:20:42Speaker 6: it in the US. And this was one product years
- 1:20:46Speaker 6: and years ago when I was still in my basement,
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: but they were the last one that came out of
- 1:20:51Speaker 6: the box. I found a little tag on it that
- 1:20:53Speaker 6: I think they used to get through customs that said
- 1:20:57Speaker 6: made in Mexico. And I'm like really, and I'm like,
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: you dirty rats, because they gave me a price for
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: USA made or NAFTA compliant or you know, Asia pricing,
- 1:21:10Speaker 6: and I paid for the US made stuff. And they
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: figured out this little guy in his basement can probably
- 1:21:16Speaker 6: wouldn't know the difference, and he'll pay us a little
- 1:21:19Speaker 6: more if we get it made somewhere.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: And they went out of business.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: Yeah, they went out of business.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: If when you look at the at that the doppel
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: bag you're working on, it has the I know, you
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: mess around with a bunch of different fabrics, yep. And
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: and uh, you'd give me bags and I'd bring them
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: back to you after you're broken. Well, I'd be like,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: you know, the bag baggage handler or brade and whatever
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: this stuff happens to him mostly that yep. I mean,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: anything you ever gave me would wound up being that
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: the guy, it looks.
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: Like it got stuck stuck in the conveyor We got
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: jammed in the conveyor belt.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: And then you uh settled on that sale cloth. Where's
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: that made?
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: That is made overseas. That specific fabric is made overseas.
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: Part of the reason I chose that is because of
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: the color availability. Availability of the fabric again becomes a challenge.
- 1:22:07Speaker 6: And that bag is actually a mix of US fabrics
- 1:22:09Speaker 6: and the sailcloth, but it's one hundred percent recycled, and
- 1:22:12Speaker 6: it's done in a facility over there that I mean,
- 1:22:16Speaker 6: as you guys probably where almost all recycling is done overseas.
- 1:22:19Speaker 6: Half the stuff you throw in your recycle bin either
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: ends up with the landfill or on a boat to
- 1:22:24Speaker 6: go get recycled.
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: O kinceled. Like the recycling chain is like an overseas chain.
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: That's a whole other. Yeah, get down the YouTube and
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: go down that rabbit hole.
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: But where it's actually happening.
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: Yeah, most of it is done overseas.
- 1:22:40Speaker 6: And so this specific factory is recycling, and this this fabric,
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: it's a polyester you know, using recycled bottles and whatnot,
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: is one hundred percent recycled. The film is recycled as
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: well as the adhesive is a non solvent based adhesive
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: that actually works better with UV resistance and it's actually
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: more waterproof. So in this case, I think for this application,
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: it was just a better fabric to use. But yeah,
- 1:23:11Speaker 6: that one ends up being overseas, although the base of
- 1:23:14Speaker 6: it is a US base.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: Bottles it is.
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: Yeah, how do you buy the stuff? It's like like
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: rolls of it is, so we do. We have a
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: little different procedure than most whereas I do all the
- 1:23:33Speaker 6: design and development stuff here in house in Bozeman, so
- 1:23:35Speaker 6: I'm able to kind of reach out to these manufacturers
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: and get small parts and pieces. When I first started,
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: I mean I was buying stuff on eBay and just
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: random stuff who knows where it was coming from.
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: Trying to buy materials.
- 1:23:48Speaker 6: Yeah, because most of these big companies, especially in the US,
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: they have such high minimums that it kind of prevents
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: the the little guy from ordering. You know, I even
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: here in Bozeman, I wouldn't want to order, you know,
- 1:23:59Speaker 6: roll and rolls of fabric. You know, I need five
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: to ten yards of it and it'll last me a
- 1:24:03Speaker 6: few months to just build some samples to get to
- 1:24:07Speaker 6: you know, you and I and Jason to test out
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: and see if it's going to work. But then once
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: we kind of settle on that material from these producers,
- 1:24:16Speaker 6: then we send it to our production facility who takes
- 1:24:19Speaker 6: the specs that we give them and uh, you know
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: people that we can our sources are spelled out to
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: them and then they do the bulk ordering and.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: Put everything and the solers. What are the main states
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: or stuff gets sold that's made in America.
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: I'd say the biggest location is southern California. We don't
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: use anybody there anymore, we have, but you know, right
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: around LA, the San Diego area seems super busy. All
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: along the eastern seaboard there probably South Carolina, you know,
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: up in New England. And then we have facilities as
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: well that we use, like in Minnesota as well as
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: uh Indiana kind of that Midwest state. But really I
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: mean that you see it like locally and Bozeman, it's
- 1:25:18Speaker 6: very hard to find people to work those jobs, be
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: able to pay them a wage that allows them to
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: stay here. You know, even Mystery ranch is here, SIMS
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: is here.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: You know, they they've started to move a lot of
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: that bulk production outside the area.
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: And I don't know about SIMS specifically, but you know
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: mystery ranch is bulk production is all over the country,
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: or you know, they're certainly their military line is all
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: US made, but their hunting line is made in Vietnam,
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: which as I said, as I said before, the they
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: have probably the most talented best as an aggregate sewers
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: in the world. And it's just because that equipment and
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: talent pool is there, and so I think it can
- 1:26:12Speaker 6: start coming back to the US. But you know, it
- 1:26:14Speaker 6: has to be done by companies like US using those facilities,
- 1:26:20Speaker 6: because if we you know, there aren't companies like US
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: using the facilities in the US, they're eventually gonna go
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: out a business and go overseas as well.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: If you had to put a just like a fine
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: point on it, or I guess it's more like a
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: rough point on it. Making it in America, it's like
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: sewing goods, like making making a backpack, binal harness whatever
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: in America makes it cost what percent higher?
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: I don't know the answer because I've never actually quoted
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: anything in the US, or I'm sorry, in China, or.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: You never out of curiosity just asked them.
- 1:26:52Speaker 6: I haven't, but I get emails constantly from companies over
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: there that will send me pictures of my harness as
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: well as editor harnesses that say, hey, we make these,
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: we could make yours for you and it will be
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: you know, pennies on the dollar. And if you look
- 1:27:08Speaker 6: at Amazon, I mean you can see, you know, search
- 1:27:12Speaker 6: biny harnesses on Amazon and you'll come up with many
- 1:27:15Speaker 6: that look very similar. Once you get them in your hand,
- 1:27:17Speaker 6: you'll realize there's a quality difference. But there's copies of
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: all the major brands. For you know, our harness is
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: one of the most expensive harnesses on the market, and
- 1:27:29Speaker 6: I think it's because it's the best and it takes
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: a long time to make. You know, ours retails at
- 1:27:36Speaker 6: one eighty five and you can find a pouch that
- 1:27:40Speaker 6: you can wear on your chest for you know, eighteen
- 1:27:43Speaker 6: dollars that's made overseas. And you know, even some of
- 1:27:47Speaker 6: the retailers, even some of the big optics companies, you know,
- 1:27:55Speaker 6: provide a free harness with their with their optics that
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: you know they're they're getting the job done.
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: You can hold it, it'll hold it on your store
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: on it.
- 1:28:04Speaker 10: It's a difference between spin fishing.
- 1:28:07Speaker 13: And it is.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: You guys make like pelves game calls you had, you
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: traditionally started out like just founder base. You started off
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: by hat you just like buy necessity made him here. Yep, yeap,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: it made him. And then I mean we went through
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: that evolution. We are.
- 1:28:22Speaker 8: We are sourced both domestically and overseas, and we've tried
- 1:28:26Speaker 8: to move as much back you know, like the Easy Sucker.
- 1:28:28Speaker 8: We moved back into the States, and we're leveraging like
- 1:28:31Speaker 8: a very big partner.
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: We've given a lot of work.
- 1:28:33Speaker 8: But USA Manufacturing, Like as much as I would love
- 1:28:37Speaker 8: to move everything here there, to be honest, they're a
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: bigger pain in the ass to work with, just like
- 1:28:43Speaker 8: Paul alluded to, they don't you know, I feel like
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: we're crushing it in the game call world, right, but
- 1:28:48Speaker 8: ten thousand piece order of this plastic part, they don't
- 1:28:51Speaker 8: want anything to do with that.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: They want you to order one hundred thousand, five hundred thousand.
- 1:28:54Speaker 8: We just don't have that buying capacity or the need
- 1:28:56Speaker 8: for it, and so you just kind of get thrown
- 1:28:58Speaker 8: through the ring or your prices come back high. And
- 1:29:00Speaker 8: then I'm left with like a business decision, like do
- 1:29:03Speaker 8: you want to sell a woodpicker call for seventy and
- 1:29:04Speaker 8: ninety nine or do you want to sell it for
- 1:29:06Speaker 8: thirty two ninety nine where it should be, you know,
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: And so a lot of times we do our best.
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: Like our new unleashed V two tube, as far as
- 1:29:13Speaker 8: I know, it's maybe one of the only blow molded
- 1:29:15Speaker 8: like tubes inside the USA, but due to the Federal
- 1:29:18Speaker 8: Trade Commission rules, because I put a k neoprene sleeve
- 1:29:21Speaker 8: on it that comes from overseas and it's it's an
- 1:29:23Speaker 8: essential part in the definition of it, all of a sudden.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: It can't be you know, made and ada, you know.
- 1:29:29Speaker 8: So you got to like balance all these like FTC
- 1:29:32Speaker 8: rules and like make sure you're following the rules, you know.
- 1:29:36Speaker 8: But we try, we we we make an honest approach.
- 1:29:39Speaker 8: I do get a quote on everything we build USA
- 1:29:42Speaker 8: and you know, offshore, and there are times where we
- 1:29:45Speaker 8: just have to pick and choose.
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: And like I said, I'm.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: Proud and I try to keep everything here.
- 1:29:49Speaker 8: But there's just business decisions where unless you're willing to
- 1:29:53Speaker 8: try and sell something for ten times all of your competition,
- 1:29:57Speaker 8: you're just going to be stuck going that way. Yeah,
- 1:30:00Speaker 8: but you know, all of our Turkey calls. All of
- 1:30:02Speaker 8: our wood tricky calls made in the USA, with the
- 1:30:05Speaker 8: majority of our woods USA source. You know, I don't
- 1:30:07Speaker 8: want to be, you know, accused of cutting down the
- 1:30:10Speaker 8: South American rainforw it, you know, so we try to
- 1:30:12Speaker 8: tack and back Jason not on necessarily, He's talked about
- 1:30:15Speaker 8: a lot of the woods.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: He's like, oh, it's a nice wood, but man, it's yeah.
- 1:30:18Speaker 8: You don't want you don't want that, you know, So
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: we avoid that. We try to bill as much as
- 1:30:22Speaker 8: we can. You know, we started that acrylic deer call line.
- 1:30:25Speaker 8: You know, we source a lot of made in the USA,
- 1:30:27Speaker 8: a crilic. We do source some acrylic from off shore,
- 1:30:29Speaker 8: but it's just it's depending on colors and time. So
- 1:30:32Speaker 8: we're we're doing the best we can and making an honest,
- 1:30:36Speaker 8: uh truly honest approach at keeping everything we can have
- 1:30:39Speaker 8: made here and when dollars and cents, I'm willing to
- 1:30:41Speaker 8: spend a little bit more for USA made because, as
- 1:30:44Speaker 8: you mentioned, the logistics of putting on a boat, timelines,
- 1:30:47Speaker 8: you know, language barriers, stuff that I sometimes struggle with.
- 1:30:52Speaker 8: I'm willing to pay you know, up to two hundred
- 1:30:53Speaker 8: three hundred percent more if I can justify it for parts,
- 1:30:56Speaker 8: but it's not always the option. But yeah, we we
- 1:30:59Speaker 8: fight it on every single new project where we're going
- 1:31:02Speaker 8: and then pricing.
- 1:31:03Speaker 6: It's a good point in that, like having it made
- 1:31:05Speaker 6: here allows smaller companies like us to be a little
- 1:31:08Speaker 6: more nimble and be able to move and pivot things.
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: You know, like for instance, if had we put that
- 1:31:15Speaker 6: big bag that got cut on the conveyor belt into
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: production and realized too late that you know, maybe we shouldn't,
- 1:31:23Speaker 6: you know, make ten thousand of those. They aren't sitting
- 1:31:25Speaker 6: on a boat on the way over here. You know,
- 1:31:27Speaker 6: we can quickly switch material and have that one on one,
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: I have the cell phone number of the guy who's
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: going to make that happen, and just get it done
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: the same day versus you know, kind of this skype
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: call to somebody who there's a language barrier with YEP.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: That's helped us a lot too, to just be nimble
- 1:31:46Speaker 3: and quick and be able to come up with a
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: product quickly. Yeah, because we're molding, you know, we're molding ourselves,
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: you know, sculpting at molding it and casting the parts
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: and painting and working out the paint. So some we
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: can come up with a new decoy pretty quickly, as
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: you know, the market changes, the populations change, or you know,
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: hundreds inches change, and that's kind of nice to be
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: able to do that well.
- 1:32:07Speaker 12: And and also we're making small daily batches of decoys,
- 1:32:13Speaker 12: whereas you know, if you're importing, you know you're buying
- 1:32:18Speaker 12: container loads, and so you could get an order of
- 1:32:21Speaker 12: five thousand decoys only to find out that, you know,
- 1:32:26Speaker 12: there's there's some huge quality issue there, and now you
- 1:32:29Speaker 12: have a whole container load of decoys, you know. Whereas
- 1:32:35Speaker 12: for us, we stay small, and I mean we literally
- 1:32:38Speaker 12: can walk out into the shop and take a good
- 1:32:41Speaker 12: look over our product every day, and and we're we're
- 1:32:47Speaker 12: really tight on on quality control that way.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: So I could call you guys and say I want
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: you to go out and find me the nicest one
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: out there.
- 1:32:54Speaker 10: Oh yeah, I thought he was going to say he
- 1:32:56Speaker 10: could walk out in the shop and yell at somebody
- 1:32:59Speaker 10: this juggie.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: We could do that, and that that Doffel bag though,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: what do you call the Doffel bag or pit Duffel?
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: Just because it opens up into a big can you
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: can you peel by you?
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: Not yet?
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Okay, that's the nicest Dolf bag. I think we're made
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: by man.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: Well, it's relatively simple, but it great.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: But it seems like it's gonna float away as far
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: as light.
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: Yeah, and that that's the other benefit of that fabric
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: because it's ultra light, and the film and the coating
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: on that allows it to just, yeah, be ultra durable.
- 1:33:32Speaker 6: Like I said, I'm not gonna color a waterproof bag,
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: but you know, very water resistant and h and tough
- 1:33:40Speaker 6: like that material itself is, you know, just reinforced. And yeah,
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: it's gonna be I think it'll be a good bag.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: But you gotta make what you're gonna make a bunch
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: of sizes, three sizes.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: Maybe still gotta argue with the.
- 1:33:55Speaker 6: Internal uh corporate about how many about how many sizes
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: as we can make.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Give me the arguments. What are the arguments?
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: Well, give me the pro and con Well, I don't
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: know that there are.
- 1:34:05Speaker 6: I don't have any cons. I want to make a
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: larger one. That's uh, you know, it end up being
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: the one you have is like a sixty liter defel.
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: I want to do a thirty of sixty and a
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: ninety leader does Yeah, and uh, I think that'll be
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: perfect We've already made the ninety. We've tested it. Uh,
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: I made one, but we've traded around the shop and
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: used it for flights here and the air and send
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: me over a thirty man. Yeah, I need to make
- 1:34:28Speaker 6: I've yet to make one of those, but we're actually
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: having all three of them priced currently at production to
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: make sure that we.
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: Are able to do that quickly.
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: Can I give you hot tip?
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: Absolutely, If you do three, I'd call it the one ten,
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: two twenty and three thirty. Hey, you go conno beears
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: because that's the three conn be sizes. Like I mean,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: there's all their goofy stuff. There's like one eighties and
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: sixties that's going to sixties. There's one sixties, two eighties,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: but no one pays attention the one ten, the two,
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: twenty to three thirty.
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: Then I'll confuse everybody.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: What are the numbers mean? Like, it's long story. There's
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: nothing to do with that. That's nothing to.
- 1:35:03Speaker 12: Do with you.
- 1:35:03Speaker 10: That's always good.
- 1:35:06Speaker 12: That is a long story.
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: Can I ask do they have like backpack straps on them?
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: They do?
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:35:12Speaker 6: The backpack straps are the handles and you can kind
- 1:35:16Speaker 6: of figure basically decide where you want those, but yeah,
- 1:35:20Speaker 6: they're they're comfortable backpack. Like the giant one I made.
- 1:35:25Speaker 6: I've used in airports as well, and if you got
- 1:35:28Speaker 6: to walk real far. I mean that one was one
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: hundred and forty leaders or something that was a huge
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: but which is why I got caught on the conveyor
- 1:35:35Speaker 6: belts everywhere. But and it wasn't as comfortable as this one.
- 1:35:39Speaker 6: This one actually feels like it's wearable. Yeah, it's certainly wearable,
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: you know.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 1:35:44Speaker 8: So the one I have is sixty, yes, thirty sixty
- 1:35:47Speaker 8: ninety dude, Yeah, thirty.
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: Won't confuse anybody.
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: So what's up apex belts? With Turkey season coming up?
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: So that is uh, it's funny.
- 1:35:58Speaker 6: We just got done with the show and had to
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: kind of explain to people that the U the foundations
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: we came out with, the belt, the hydration pack both
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: are multiple use items. Just happens with the and I
- 1:36:13Speaker 6: say multiple use, How do I best explain that there?
- 1:36:16Speaker 6: I use it as a range belt, a hiking belt,
- 1:36:20Speaker 6: hunting belt, edition whatever, fishing. I scouted all summer in.
- 1:36:23Speaker 7: It, all season, all pursuit.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I was using mine for buck ratlin yep.
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: But being that we're launching that here in the spring,
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: figured we would include some accessories or launch some accessories
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: about the same time. So we have the box call
- 1:36:39Speaker 6: pouch coming out with it. It's a The belt itself
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: is a three piece belt, so it's really expandable, kind
- 1:36:45Speaker 6: of designed to be a one size fits most belt.
- 1:36:48Speaker 6: Got kind of an internal frame sheet molly attachment. Those
- 1:36:51Speaker 6: who are familiar with the battle belt will.
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: Kind of be familiar with the idea of a padded
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: imagine like the belt of a big frame.
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Pack without a backpack. Let's go a way of putting it.
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: Has suspenders available, has a folding seat that kind of
- 1:37:09Speaker 6: tucks up out of the.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Way and yeah, is that out now or not out
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: it is?
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, we I think.
- 1:37:13Speaker 6: Sweet launched that and you don't even notice you're wearing
- 1:37:16Speaker 6: that a super you know, minimal. We've seen interest from
- 1:37:20Speaker 6: that from predator hunters, Turkey hunters as.
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: Well as well. My old turkey vest had a seat
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: and I like a seat, but all day walk around
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: that seat bang in the back your knees drives you insane, man.
- 1:37:31Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's you know what we kind of heard
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: from customers is like one they're usually a pain to
- 1:37:35Speaker 6: stow if you're going to stow them up behind it.
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: And if you don't stow it, the yeah, they hitch
- 1:37:39Speaker 6: you in the calves the entire rest of the day.
- 1:37:41Speaker 6: So this one tucks away easily using magnets. You can
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: hook it to a backpack even we did a video
- 1:37:47Speaker 6: recently on social just hooked it to my trouser belt
- 1:37:50Speaker 6: and to my bino harness and don't have any belt
- 1:37:53Speaker 6: worked out well, so you can kind of customize and
- 1:37:56Speaker 6: tailor that whole system to fit your style.
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: In the pot call pouch, we did the pot call pouch.
- 1:38:01Speaker 6: We call it echelon right and left just because they're
- 1:38:04Speaker 6: kind of a triangle shape with the point facing forward.
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: You would that's how you figure out right and left.
- 1:38:10Speaker 12: Ye.
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: And if you're inclined to leave all your shit out
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: in the woods, this is a good little thing to
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: have with you. Yeah, easy to it encourages not leaving
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: all your junk in the woods, easy to put stuff in,
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: easy to get in and out of quickly because you
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: can actually operate out of it. It's a pot call holder,
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: but it opens out yep, So when you're sitting there,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: it's actually just as good to have it there. This
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: is lay it in the leaves next to you, which
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: is what I used to I just kind of hide
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: my stuff in the leaves and then later i'd go
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: back and try to find where.
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: I put it. I need to put some more lanyard
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: loops on that thing. But yeah, it's uh just the
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: way it sits open.
- 1:38:47Speaker 6: Yeah, you can kind of just like our chest ri
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: you can just open open it and work out of
- 1:38:52Speaker 6: it and put everything.
- 1:38:52Speaker 4: Back where it goes.
- 1:38:53Speaker 6: It's got the spots for you your putt and peg
- 1:38:57Speaker 6: as well as scratch pads all that stuff.
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: We found out.
- 1:38:59Speaker 6: Its shows that actually uh conceals a handgun in there
- 1:39:02Speaker 6: pretty well as well. We had numerous people ask and
- 1:39:06Speaker 6: actually like to wear mine. It's all where the the
- 1:39:09Speaker 6: right or I'm sorry, the left one. So the triangle
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: faces forward on your left. I wear that on my
- 1:39:15Speaker 6: right side for cross draw. Well it creates, uh, it
- 1:39:18Speaker 6: creates like a wing of sorts where when you sling
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: your shotgun, it sits right behind there and creates at
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: the weapons catch.
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: So it's good.
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: It actually works out really well in that respect. But
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: I think that covers that.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: So how about the is the is the the morale bag?
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: It is available now. Yeah, and it's just the same
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: way by those people are stupid.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: If they don't, people I think need to be educated
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: to what they are.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: They're all over in the tactical world.
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: You know, guys use them for mag dump pouches, you know,
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: putting down empty mags or whatever we've found we've been
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: using them for, like rifle hunting. If you need to
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: stow your gloves quick instead of putting them inside your
- 1:39:59Speaker 6: coat or draw opping them as you're moving, you just
- 1:40:01Speaker 6: stuff them in that bag. It's just a you know,
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: it gets the size of like a chew can rolled up.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like a big ass bag that hangs from
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: your belt, but it rolls up like a chew can.
- 1:40:11Speaker 8: Well you don't you know, you wouldn't know it was there. No,
- 1:40:13Speaker 8: And the way it's undo it and it opens up
- 1:40:15Speaker 8: and you can you can put like eight meals or
- 1:40:18Speaker 8: the morals in there.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Yep. Absolutely.
- 1:40:20Speaker 6: And it's got a mesh bottom on it, so you know,
- 1:40:22Speaker 6: if you are putting stuff that's dirty or wet, you know,
- 1:40:25Speaker 6: it still drips out the bottom. It doesn't collect, and
- 1:40:28Speaker 6: then it's removable so you can it's mollied onto your belt.
- 1:40:32Speaker 6: The attachment system we use, and it just you can
- 1:40:35Speaker 6: unhook it and empty it, do whatever you need to.
- 1:40:38Speaker 7: It's a drop bag too, so it's out of your way.
- 1:40:41Speaker 6: Yeah, and it's sits underneath the way it is attached,
- 1:40:44Speaker 6: sits underneath your existing pouches, so it doesn't take up
- 1:40:47Speaker 6: extra room on your belt. And so if you don't
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: need it, you really don't even notice it's there.
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: So all the everything people need to hunt turkeys is
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: available on there, it is.
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:40:56Speaker 6: And again that's you know, because of the timing of
- 1:40:59Speaker 6: launching all this stuff, we focused on turkeys to start with,
- 1:41:02Speaker 6: but you know, the plan would be to have a
- 1:41:04Speaker 6: whole lot of different stuff coming out that will attach
- 1:41:06Speaker 6: and any of our old existing pouch is still attached
- 1:41:08Speaker 6: to it now, like you said, I use it fishing
- 1:41:12Speaker 6: at the range, you know, all over the place.
- 1:41:14Speaker 10: But the Scott's shoulder straps too, it does.
- 1:41:16Speaker 6: It has kind of the same geometry as the first
- 1:41:18Speaker 6: light elastic suspenders. Or you could attach it to the
- 1:41:26Speaker 6: hydration pack and use your hydration pack as your shoulder yoke.
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: But so, but you can buy it all you can
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: buy right now. Right It's like they came, did they
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: sell out, came out not for sale.
- 1:41:38Speaker 6: We did a soft launch in December December, and then
- 1:41:43Speaker 6: we did limited colors then and they did sell out.
- 1:41:46Speaker 6: Some of those sold out right away, and then we
- 1:41:49Speaker 6: relaunched them here just a couple of weeks.
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: Ago with all the colors, so you can get it
- 1:41:54Speaker 8: right now, just get it. Yeah, absolutely, And what else
- 1:41:58Speaker 8: is coming up next?
- 1:42:01Speaker 7: Pit Duffle in June. We've got.
- 1:42:05Speaker 6: A hip quiver YEP, kind of an interesting hip quiver
- 1:42:10Speaker 6: that I think is different than any of them I've
- 1:42:12Speaker 6: ever seen on the market. Ambidextrous kind of use and uh,
- 1:42:19Speaker 6: you know, there's a lot of companies out there doing them,
- 1:42:21Speaker 6: but none's ever been done like this.
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: So that'll be the summer launches. You probably know more
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: than me.
- 1:42:29Speaker 16: Yeah, we have a bit of a quiet year after
- 1:42:32Speaker 16: Apex Belt System, just given the nature of last year
- 1:42:36Speaker 16: we had I don't even know how many new products
- 1:42:38Speaker 16: with the fob. So we'll have one more launch this
- 1:42:41Speaker 16: year and then we're kind of grinding on twenty twenty
- 1:42:44Speaker 16: five stuff.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: So and how are you coming on our on our
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: secret uh our work entitled Rio Loco. Yeah, I was there,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: remember when they're named that thing? Well he needs. He
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: needs to do a bunch of research on this. Yes,
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: I have the only one in existence right now. Oh
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: and also felts, what's up with the moose call?
- 1:43:08Speaker 12: We got it.
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: You and you and Clay asked a lot, but we
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: have to make a little divergence.
- 1:43:14Speaker 8: It's just it's unsustainable to build it the way you
- 1:43:16Speaker 8: guys wanted and be like this ultra I won't say ultram,
- 1:43:21Speaker 8: it's not not ultra premium, but it just can't be
- 1:43:23Speaker 8: produced one at a time and a big giant.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: I want you in there just making one at a time.
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: When you get one done, let someone know, like the
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: original days, like I just just made this one. It's
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: up for sale, like just all day web maintenance. But no,
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: it's it's coming.
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: We finally found somebody that would injection mold it with
- 1:43:45Speaker 8: the right plastic makeup and a huge like fiberglass fill,
- 1:43:49Speaker 8: so it'll be very, very similar to what what you
- 1:43:52Speaker 8: guys used. We made it a little bit thinner. Some
- 1:43:54Speaker 8: of the other reviewers wanted a little more resonation out
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: of it, and so were a little.
- 1:44:00Speaker 10: Who else is better?
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: Mosing? Do they want it?
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: They want, but they want to be able to rake
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: brush rake. They wanted to be a little more hollow
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: when they're raking brush.
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: And then they want, but i'll talk to you.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: There's some reasons why.
- 1:44:11Speaker 10: We all see big bulls.
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: And then they got that you're taking our color suggestion.
- 1:44:17Speaker 8: Right, Oh yeah, yeah, we picked your It was weird
- 1:44:20Speaker 8: that the name has green in it, but it was
- 1:44:21Speaker 8: the most accurate. It was like some weird sage green
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: color that they could cast.
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: But yeah, it'll be meaning that your call looks like
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: a paddle, but yeah, it'll be like that could be
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: really good. Does it have the read in it or
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: is it just we're going to work on it.
- 1:44:31Speaker 8: We we got some other changes to it, but yeah,
- 1:44:34Speaker 8: we'll have that. We'll have that read read in there
- 1:44:36Speaker 8: as an accessory. But nine people will probably just voice call,
- 1:44:40Speaker 8: but we'll we'll have that as an option, okay, and.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: Then uh, and then real quick before we wrap up
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: review for me, what what hot new turkey products are out?
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: And then then I want the DSD you guys do
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: the same, So Turkey calls.
- 1:44:50Speaker 8: This year we got the new triple locator Hawk Scream,
- 1:44:53Speaker 8: I'll scream Woodpecker call. We brought back working with Steve Morgenstern,
- 1:44:58Speaker 8: one of the greats in the in the friction ca world.
- 1:45:00Speaker 8: We've got two signature series, so we went with I'm
- 1:45:03Speaker 8: gonna get this wrong. We went with Mulberry and a
- 1:45:05Speaker 8: red slate, and then we went with like a very
- 1:45:07Speaker 8: specific specked out hard slate in Babinga. So we have
- 1:45:11Speaker 8: two of.
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: Those pots coming.
- 1:45:14Speaker 8: And then we've got the new Rain series that we
- 1:45:15Speaker 8: partnered up with Chris Parrish, probably the all time winning
- 1:45:19Speaker 8: his tricky caller and great, great you know guy that
- 1:45:23Speaker 8: that we work with on the Turkey call side on
- 1:45:25Speaker 8: a three pack of those really light, more intricate diaphragms.
- 1:45:28Speaker 8: This year we've got a new reverse tapered striker. I
- 1:45:31Speaker 8: think I can talk about it now, a reverse tapered striker.
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: So like, oh, by the way, why'd you give Clay
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: a pack of calls?
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: We didn't give me a new pack of calls.
- 1:45:39Speaker 8: Don't need Clay gave me credit for that. I don't
- 1:45:41Speaker 8: know where he dug those up when he got here.
- 1:45:43Speaker 10: Oh yeah, you didn't give those to me. Somebody else did.
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: But then we've got like you know, strikers forever have
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: been like you know, they usually get bigger as they.
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: Go out to the bell.
- 1:45:54Speaker 8: But like you can see on this one, it actually
- 1:45:55Speaker 8: gets skinnier back towards where we make the connection on
- 1:45:59Speaker 8: the on the end, a lot more vibration you can
- 1:46:02Speaker 8: actually fill it in your striker, and so we're getting
- 1:46:04Speaker 8: a little bit more once again.
- 1:46:06Speaker 4: Morganstern had that idea. So we're gonna bring that guy
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: out this year.
- 1:46:09Speaker 8: And everybody talks about you always hear everybody talk about
- 1:46:12Speaker 8: diamond wood strikers, you know, wake up the cheapest calls.
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: And we finally found a company that has.
- 1:46:18Speaker 8: Yeah, like that's that's the best striker material you can
- 1:46:21Speaker 8: in my opinion, and a lot of tricky hunter's opinions
- 1:46:23Speaker 8: you can use. We finally found somebody that had like
- 1:46:26Speaker 8: the original recipe to diamond wood. Everybody, you know a
- 1:46:29Speaker 8: lot of people have tried to imitate it but haven't
- 1:46:31Speaker 8: got it right. And so we're back to like the
- 1:46:33Speaker 8: original diamond wood.
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: What is the strikers.
- 1:46:35Speaker 8: So it's just a bunch of laminated short really you know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 8: thin veneers, and they put a bunch of phenolic resin
- 1:46:41Speaker 8: and then put it under like crazy amounts of pressure.
- 1:46:44Speaker 8: So even though it's wood, it's also got a lot
- 1:46:46Speaker 8: of phenolic in it, and so it's you know, fairly waterproof.
- 1:46:50Speaker 8: It will it will saturate out, but like just that
- 1:46:53Speaker 8: thing will wake up a ten dollars pot call that
- 1:46:56Speaker 8: you got it Walmart and have, Yeah, that's yours. It
- 1:47:00Speaker 8: does look like you put it in there backward. Yeah, no,
- 1:47:03Speaker 8: it's it was designed that way. I need to write
- 1:47:05Speaker 8: reverse ta Yeah we did. It wasn't like it wasn't
- 1:47:08Speaker 8: a reject off of the machine. You need to write
- 1:47:09Speaker 8: reverse taper. It feels good in your hand. Yeah, it's
- 1:47:12Speaker 8: it's it's good.
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: It's good.
- 1:47:15Speaker 8: You can build a real marginal pot call and throw
- 1:47:17Speaker 8: out striker in with it and you're like, bam, is
- 1:47:19Speaker 8: that right? And then uh, tell me about the triple
- 1:47:21Speaker 8: locator again. So hawk scream it's got three settings on
- 1:47:25Speaker 8: the band, So if you set it closest to the
- 1:47:28Speaker 8: front of the yeah, we got this, and then we
- 1:47:29Speaker 8: also have it in like a more custom fancy lamine.
- 1:47:32Speaker 8: You got the oul screamer in the middle setting, and
- 1:47:35Speaker 8: then all the way back we've got that affiliated woodpecker
- 1:47:39Speaker 8: just located on one.
- 1:47:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:47:41Speaker 8: Loud, extremely loud, you know, with the intention hunters, the
- 1:47:45Speaker 8: hunter's call just to get them to locate. Are you
- 1:47:47Speaker 8: still selling Clay's acorn call?
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: We are, We're about out.
- 1:47:51Speaker 8: We we did that rerun and really didn't talk a
- 1:47:53Speaker 8: whole lot about it, and I think we're we're getting
- 1:47:55Speaker 8: down into real low two digit inventory left and that's
- 1:47:58Speaker 8: gonna be the last run ever.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: We've made some improvements.
- 1:48:02Speaker 8: Yeah, we got two material improvements and uh uh yeah,
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: I'm gonna the.
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: One little issue collectors.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: Are you going to retire it? Yeah? Well, so Clay,
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: we did something cool.
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: We wanted to use white oak, and we realized like
- 1:48:16Speaker 8: the finishing of white oak was a giant pain in
- 1:48:18Speaker 8: the ass at times.
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: So we had to we had to go back and
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: you know, change them over.
- 1:48:24Speaker 10: But the structure of the call, that being an inhale
- 1:48:26Speaker 10: exhale dobly buck grunt, I mean, that's the acorn grunner,
- 1:48:31Speaker 10: but the oak acorn grunner.
- 1:48:33Speaker 8: Is gonna go The oak part is gonna go away.
- 1:48:35Speaker 8: We're gonna switch it over to a crylic. How many
- 1:48:37Speaker 8: do we make of those total in the two different runs?
- 1:48:40Speaker 8: At twelve hundred total, and then you don't have if
- 1:48:44Speaker 8: you want to get one. We sold a bunch of
- 1:48:46Speaker 8: them there at the Portland Show. People loved them and yeah,
- 1:48:49Speaker 8: it's it's pretty unique, great sounding call. You blow on
- 1:48:51Speaker 8: one and I'll take that.
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: Well, speaking of a collector's I mean not had me
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: there night. There was a huge mistake. My buddies were
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: over because my birthday and someone's like, hey, can we
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: open this bottle of whiskey?
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: Oh don't well?
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: I was well, I was like, I don't care. We
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: could drinking, and you know that they opened it. I
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: didn't realize back there when we had that that barrel
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: of meat eater bourbon. Oh it was them. It was
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: the bottle that said one, and I had like, you.
- 1:49:22Speaker 10: Were never going to use it, I know, but dude,
- 1:49:27Speaker 10: they got it.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: You've got a little chunk change for that. If it
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: was if you have send it to my collection, it
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: would still be sitting up there unopened. Once I realized
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: what happened, Yeah, it's going now have gone.
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: But this is the like whiskey is meant to be drinking.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: You know, my good friends and what's better than the
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: fiftieth birthday party? It was my old was my oldest friends,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: was like my o G friends. They drank it.
- 1:49:51Speaker 4: So it's fun, all.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: Right, Dave, you do the same thing. What's the hot
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: new ticket. The hot new DSD items for spring turkey
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: which is coming up.
- 1:49:59Speaker 3: New for of this spring is that we finally made
- 1:50:02Speaker 3: a pack that's designed to carry DSD turkey decoys. It's
- 1:50:06Speaker 3: a fly down pack and was designed by our own
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: Scott Sprucker, and it.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: Is I mean, rather than putting them in a big
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: gunny sick yeah, rather.
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: Than putting the the you know, the straps around your
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: neck and it's like you put to this way and.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: To this way, we're going to get across some getting strangled, yeah, which.
- 1:50:26Speaker 4: We've all done that.
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: This is a really comfortable pack that's lightweight, has a
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: divider in it so it easily carries a jake and
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: a hen half strut jake and a hen and maybe
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: maybe a little more than that, and then there's also
- 1:50:41Speaker 3: a chest rig and they can be worn together. And
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: the chest rig is basically to hold everything, every essential
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: thing that you need for turkey. Anningh did you bring
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: me one of those packs?
- 1:50:54Speaker 10: Does it have a nose it replaces your turkey your
- 1:50:57Speaker 10: turkey vest.
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and.
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: It has a yeah, and it has a pad, uh
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: seat pad.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: Really yeah, I just want the backpack.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: It's not it's not quite the utility about that. That's
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: what I was.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: It's a bag. I want the bag to carry the
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: decoys in a guny sex. Yeah you can.
- 1:51:15Speaker 3: You can put the decoy within its bag in the backpack,
- 1:51:19Speaker 3: or just take it out of its bag and put it.
- 1:51:20Speaker 3: Put it in the backpack because it's it protects the
- 1:51:23Speaker 3: whole decoy, so that makes it super fast, super fast
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: set up.
- 1:51:26Speaker 4: That's what I want.
- 1:51:27Speaker 12: And you can buy it, Steve is just the backpack
- 1:51:30Speaker 12: or just the chest pack, or you can get the pair.
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: And you guys are all in stock. People are gonna
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: have any problem to go to buy their decoys for
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: the spring.
- 1:51:39Speaker 12: Yeah, so far we're we're caught up.
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, good man.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: I'm getting excited, like Turkey's coming. I mean it's here
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: for the you know people down south. Yeah, I'm excited.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: I get this time. I get like where I all.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: I do a mental transition and I just start putting
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: junk away, Like if I had ice fish and stuff out,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: it's done, trap and stuff, put it away, just start
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: clearing the deck yep. Like I lose interest in everything,
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: and it's like Turkey time.
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an exciting time.
- 1:52:19Speaker 12: And then one thing I might add to that, Steve
- 1:52:22Speaker 12: is our preming hend was so popular last year and
- 1:52:26Speaker 12: so many of our customers were actually buying multiple preening hens.
- 1:52:29Speaker 12: It we're now offering it as a as a twin pack.
- 1:52:32Speaker 12: You can get two preen hens and save a little money.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: That way sweet.
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: So that was a decoy we came out with kind
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: of late, so a lot of people used it last
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: year and it we were really super happy with it.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: Did you bring one of those?
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we do, We've got one here. Oh it's like
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: it's like almost.
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just.
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: Steve happy related.
- 1:52:56Speaker 10: You know, do you think when a big guy work
- 1:53:00Speaker 10: comes up to two preening decoys, he's gonna go, what
- 1:53:02Speaker 10: are the chances both of those ladies are preening at
- 1:53:05Speaker 10: the same time?
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: But I will say this.
- 1:53:09Speaker 3: In our observations, it's it's it was amazing the number
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: of times that four or five hens are preening together
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: and they're preening the same group of feathers at the
- 1:53:19Speaker 3: same time. And so that's what's so amazing about this
- 1:53:22Speaker 3: decoy is that that is a sign of turkeys that
- 1:53:25Speaker 3: are one hundred percent relaxed, like they will only do
- 1:53:28Speaker 3: that do feather maintenance when they're just completely feeling safe.
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: So it's the opposite of the decoy where they're all
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: standing exactly vertical armed the side of their head. Yeah,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: looking in the same direction. Yeah, that's great man. All right, Well,
