- 0:00Do you look like a table lamp Riccata? I look like a table lamp. Yeah, with those headphones on
- 0:07Do you need them? No, I don't really know who's becoming that. No, I know. I could do that one
- 0:14Yeah, that's not
- 0:16Not
- 0:17Or the whole sort of just you know
- 0:21Yeah, nice. No, that doesn't work either
- 0:24If I don't have the headphones on I can't hear the sort of insightful insightful comments that you both make
- 0:29Let's have a look at rivals
- 0:36Right, let's get straight into it tonight, Victor Matfield and Sir John Kuhl and
- 0:41Was it a penalty?
- 0:44I think
- 0:46Officials got something right. I was really happy. I was really worried that they're going to change it
- 0:51But I think while I'm to do officials think a good call under pressure
- 0:57Industrial there. I thought they made the wrong decision. Yeah, look, I
- 1:01I'm pleased Victor went first because he's been to more racks than me
- 1:06I think
- 1:08One of the things that's important is to look at it in real time and I've seen it 50 times in real time
- 1:15When they slow it down I think a couple of things
- 1:20I don't think he got
- 1:23Behind the ball. So I think he was offside anyway coming in from an angle rather than coming in through the gate
- 1:30And I thought it was instantaneous. I thought it was a hugely courageous decision. I think I think what it's what it's sort of
- 1:40Overshadowed for me was the Australians were outstanding
- 1:44But really only for
- 1:4765 minutes of the game
- 1:49You know a 25
- 1:515 lead or what 23 5 lead
- 1:55You know is absolutely no way you should lose a test from that. So the last 10 minutes of the first half and probably the last
- 2:0310 minutes of the of the second half for me
- 2:06Was the difference not that ruck, you know
- 2:09I thought they were outstanding, but then
- 2:12Two quick tries from the Lions and you know what it's like Victor you're going at half time if the Lions go in at half time
- 2:1920 23 5 or whatever it was
- 2:22You know the the whole conversation is different the whole vibes different
- 2:26You know Farrell said after the game is going to say the same message, but like
- 2:31I just thought you know I looked up and all of a sudden boom test was you think oh they're back into it
- 2:36They're going to win
- 2:37Yeah, I just just back to the incident. I think these two things that you need to have a look at
- 2:43Firstly, did he hit him on the head or on the neck? I don't think he did
- 2:49It was nice on the top and the second thing you'd not allowed to do a croc roll anymore. So
- 2:55I think
- 2:56He wings straight. It was a very hard hit. That's what you won
- 3:00That's what you teach your forwards to really get stuck in you one guys to pop out like that. That's like the
- 3:06Ultimate for any Ford if you get a clean like that. So that very well, but I'm with JK as well
- 3:12um
- 3:13This game
- 3:14Make me think a lot about our 2009 second test against the British and Iceland's at Loftus where
- 3:21You win the first test
- 3:23You feel like you over the other team and you pitch up at the game just not mentally
- 3:29Quite there. I think that's what the
- 3:31Lions probably did
- 3:34Yes, they were motivated, but they knew there was a third test. There's a back door
- 3:39um
- 3:40Somehow they just mentally not 100% there and Australia is Australia and everything to play for it was do or die for them
- 3:47They came out and of course when you came out like that, there's always a bit
- 3:53Difficult to get into the test match, but I think once the Lions just got through that
- 3:592030 30 minutes face we could see who is the best team of the two and yeah, they came through
- 4:06And well done to them. They they were under pressure
- 4:10They focus and also I think Australia. I didn't understand why they made some of the changes so early in that second off
- 4:18Garlock
- 4:19Wolf skeleton was unbelievable for me just these
- 4:24Physical presence in the game. I mean even in that
- 4:28little fight they had or push that bad
- 4:31um
- 4:32You're just starring over everyone and that's what you want in a game. You want that forward to just be there
- 4:38And that's a presence and I wouldn't have taken off that early
- 4:42I couldn't believe it either victor what surprised me is this is one of the biggest games of
- 4:51You know recent history playing the Lions for players
- 4:55And I thought valentinean skeleton made a huge difference
- 5:00I would not have put them on the GPS like I listened to the after match
- 5:05um
- 5:06Press conference and two things stood out to me um
- 5:10Like just run them till I can't run anymore would be my theory
- 5:14um
- 5:15Because I always remember I played with a guy called Peter Fatiolova who was like
- 5:20The worst trainer in the best player
- 5:22But he would just go and go and go and keep going
- 5:26So it's a once in a lifetime. I wouldn't have taken them off
- 5:31Second thing is what surprised me about
- 5:34Um the press conference was the Australians were talking like they are a second tier nation
- 5:41Developing um, you know young players getting better. That is just bullshit. This is Australia
- 5:48This is one of the best teams in the world. This is you know
- 5:52Two-time buddy
- 5:54Will cup champions. I just don't understand um the dialogue at the moment, you know
- 6:00I think that the dialogue should be
- 6:02Is super rugby now
- 6:05Is super rugby now preparing
- 6:07New Zealand and Australian teams for test match rugby like the six nations in the northern hemisphere does
- 6:14Um, you know would Australia be a lot better after playing the championship
- 6:19But coming out and saying oh, we're a young team, you know
- 6:23We're still learning our style of play that is not acceptable from our top tier nation as far as I'm concerned
- 6:30And I think you've got to be really careful with that dialogue
- 6:34For me, Australia
- 6:36Are our cousins. I felt for Australia because I would have loved to see them winning and it go to a
- 6:41To you know the last game this week. So I was pretty gutted for them
- 6:46But you know, I don't like listening to them saying we're a developing side as young guys in the test match arena
- 6:53No, I wouldn't like if it was South Africa. I'd say too bad if it was New Zealand would say too bad like what are you talking about where top tier nations?
- 7:01So that really surprised me the the changes and the dialogue
- 7:06If you're one of the top nations, I just don't think you
- 7:09um
- 7:11Get opportunity to say we're building um you're building super rugby you're building your local competition
- 7:17That's where you get
- 7:18Youngest opportunity
- 7:20When you're a taste match you pick your 15 base players or your 23 base players and I mean then you must make sure your mixes right
- 7:28You've got young
- 7:30Players coming through you've got few older guys
- 7:34With a lot of experience. So that's all about I'm in selection. I mean there is people in Australia
- 7:41That's played close to 100 taste matches. That's available. So if they want to say listen
- 7:45We know the experience enough just go pick one of those guys things. So
- 7:50Yeah, unfortunately
- 7:52I don't think you get that opportunity to say listen
- 7:56We have talked to your nation. We're building a taste match label especially if you're not if you plan the British eyes lines
- 8:01I mean, that's the biggest thing in 12 years in any of South Africa New Zealand
- 8:07um
- 8:07Rapid Canada. So you should be ready for it. I
- 8:12Think it's fair to say that if either New Zealand or South Africa had been in this situation that Australia was in
- 8:18And that hadn't been a penalty against us. We'd probably be making the same noises
- 8:22So, you know, that's understandable. But what are the things
- 8:26That they can change they can't change the way the referee rules every rack
- 8:31But what are the things that they can change to make sure that they win against the lines?
- 8:36You've got to close out the game in the first half you've got to
- 8:40Have a better
- 8:42Kicking game in the last 10 minutes once they score that first try you've got to try and work for a penalty get another three points
- 8:49Um, you know, that last 10 minutes for me was the costing of the test match
- 8:55I agree with Victor and I don't know what's happening with us because we're tend to be agreeing too much but
- 9:00um, you know, I felt the lines were
- 9:03Pretty pretty poor in their discipline. They were turning over ball. They were trying to create stuff
- 9:09Um out of nothing instead of building it
- 9:11So, you know, for me
- 9:13Australia
- 9:14I don't think we used to that intensity and I get back to super rugby again versus
- 9:22versus the northern hemisphere competitions
- 9:24It seemed to me that you know, you think about the lines and the defense and the
- 9:31the pressure that they sort of
- 9:34Talk in the first half and yet
- 9:37There was a passage of play just before the lines played those two games and it looked like Australia out on their feet now
- 9:45Um, are they fit enough? Of course they fit enough, but you cannot actually train in intensity. You've got to live it
- 9:50You've got to own it. You've got to play it. You've got to feel it. You've got to understand what it's like to go to the well
- 9:55But it looks like they played with such intensity within they just run out of juice in the last 10 minutes
- 10:01Of the first half um, and then I agree with with the changes
- 10:06I think that valentine not coming out after half time and will skeleton getting taken off early
- 10:11Really made a difference the guys that came on actually thought performed okay, but it's not those big bodies
- 10:16You know valentine and skeleton were making some real inroads really bending
- 10:21You know really bending their defensive line and once you bend the defensive line it changes the whole
- 10:26Aspect from backs, you know some are like time liner can then can then have front foot balls start
- 10:32Having a bit more time to make his kicks and stuff like that
- 10:35So that's where I think they lost it around
- 10:3880 minutes of intensity at test match rugby, you know
- 10:42You lose games in one moment
- 10:45And I think Australia probably had 15 minutes of
- 10:50Dropping their intensity
- 10:52Yeah, that's actually interesting we again we talk about experience and
- 10:56They're sitting with a guy like James O'Connor
- 10:59Yes, I know he hasn't been maybe that successful at test match level
- 11:03But I mean going to the crusaders coming on for them closing out games
- 11:09Isn't he a guy with experience that maybe should be on the bench and if you need some experience to close out a game
- 11:16He's the right guy or even to open it up
- 11:18I thought he was really good for the crusaders whenever he came on in the last few minutes
- 11:23Of games to win the games for them especially with these vital kick all just to close out the game. So
- 11:30I'm sure this is a game of interest
- 11:33I mean we saw in a World Cup three one point victories and you the World Cup
- 11:38And that's about dealing with those pressure moments in a game
- 11:42And most of the time when you've got those pressure moments you want
- 11:46Guys with a little bit of experience guys will stay calm
- 11:50Under pressure being there making their right decisions and that's again. I mean
- 11:55skeleton Valentini those are big
- 11:59Moment players and you want him there for the last few minutes and sometimes
- 12:04Yes, GPS can say something but the presence on the field
- 12:09Just giving confidence to everyone around you. Unfortunately the GPS gone show that
- 12:14I wonder if they asked them
- 12:17You know, I wonder if they said well you got another 10 minutes or
- 12:22This pre-plan stuff. I think you got to be very careful of in big moments like like those, you know
- 12:29So he didn't look completely exhausted when he came off to me
- 12:33I don't know what what what are they saying in Australia Ricardo? You're in Sydney at the moment
- 12:37They actually gone away from the Ruck and started talking about how they can win the next test
- 12:43No, it's still made me about the Ruck
- 12:46You know, it's probably got another six years to go. I'd say they're talking about the Ruck here
- 12:51Um
- 12:52Is anyone ever asked you during a test match with a
- 12:56Is it time for you to come off? What would you say?
- 12:58I was a winger mate, so we didn't really do anything that much besides look good
- 13:02So you have to ask Victor plus in my day
- 13:05You weren't allowed to when we started you weren't allowed to make replacements only replacements for injuries
- 13:09That's how old I am. So yeah, I was very fortunate. So I think
- 13:14Of mine is in 27th test. I probably played close to 1110 80 minutes. So
- 13:20Yeah, so normally when it was a tight game
- 13:23And again because I was part of the leader group you want your leaders to be on the field you want your guys
- 13:29calling the line out guys
- 13:32Making vital decisions in the game on the field in the last 10 20 minutes
- 13:37Because that's when you can really win a game or even run away with a game. So
- 13:42Yeah, I never wanted to come off the field
- 13:45Yes, these times we get bugged in the game, but two three more minutes and you're back in it
- 13:51So I did you think not one of those two guys look
- 13:56That they needed to come off after they can go more. So
- 14:00Yeah, it's a difficult thing that was probably pre-planned. I haven't played the previous test
- 14:06So it's really difficult, but yeah, I'm a guy
- 14:09You want your big moment players there at the end of the game
- 14:13Can you just explain that like for me
- 14:15Hard work and getting tired is getting a mover to the studio here and and I was exhausted by the time I'd move my chair around
- 14:22But when you play a test match
- 14:25Surely you're exhausted a lot earlier than the 80th minute and you just have to keep
- 14:31Dragging yourself up and going you know what I just need to battle through this is is you can you explain to our our viewers our listeners
- 14:38What that feelings like I think from a from a coaching point of view Ricardo what they would have been looking at at skeleton is
- 14:46How quickly is getting into the defensive line whether he's starting to miss a couple of tackles
- 14:52Um, whether he's getting to rucks and being a guard dog instead of hitting them. So they'd probably be looking at some
- 14:59some technical stuff
- 15:01Um, and then I'll let Vic down to the the the sort of
- 15:05Player stuff, but that's what the coach has been looking for
- 15:08Um, I should imagine I didn't see that. I'd probably have to go and re-look at the game again
- 15:13I didn't see that from Will skeleton. So that's why I'm saying they might have been looking at GS piece GS
- 15:19You know
- 15:20GPS stats instead of actually some of the game stuff, but I'm you know, joe smits are pretty experienced coach
- 15:25I'm pretty sure we would have been looking at technical performance
- 15:29What do you reckon? Something that I've seen now especially working with Japan and our days it wasn't that technical as well
- 15:35JK we were still a coach just had a
- 15:38needed to have a feeling about it
- 15:40Be say say very hard on it
- 15:43coaches can see
- 15:45At Japan you've got let's try a read and a goal for a player, a goal just when a player works
- 15:51I would 23 meters to get into position to do something and a radius if they don't get up
- 15:57Let's say within two seconds or they walk the first three steps and that started to show so
- 16:03these days they do have
- 16:05much more
- 16:07Infer that they can use when they make
- 16:10Substitutions, but again, I've said it as well. There's certain players
- 16:15That when you put them in a bleep there's they can't I mean they fall out first
- 16:19They put them in a test match and they's important rocks to hit or turn out to make the tackles make they in front
- 16:25They just keep going so and
- 16:27Yeah, I think you need to look at that you can't just look at the stats sometimes as well if a player goes through
- 16:34Those few men after this really tired
- 16:38If you know the game again be a bit lazy, but still be in the right place at the right time. So because you understand the game so
- 16:47Yes, the stats is important, but you also need to have a feel for the game and a feel for what's happening in the test match
- 16:54What do you need?
- 16:56On the park
- 16:58Especially for those last 23 minutes
- 17:00Victor how you played a lot of 80 minutes. How did you
- 17:04Drag you'll sorry ask around where you were exhausted and you still had 10 minutes to go and they're the most intense most important 10 minutes of the game
- 17:13Few really exhausted is always the prop that needs to go down for little injury
- 17:19So that you can be all right
- 17:21They can't go on without the props, especially if there's a scrum so you just delay it a little bit
- 17:26But yeah, I can't really remember being a test match
- 17:32Where I was so tired that I didn't want to go on that wasn't part of my game
- 17:36I know it got like buckets was always he was never scared of the position
- 17:40He was just scared of when he was going to get tired. So you probably do get different players
- 17:46Um
- 17:47After the game 3 I mean one game in 2010 and
- 17:51New Zealand to be the intensity was just so high and the contact was just unbelievable
- 17:56Where you think whoa and I still do this um
- 18:00But yeah fitness wise luckily I was never there that I felt and I need to come off
- 18:06The the only time Ricardo I really noticed it was actually my first test and I got told during the week by some of the elders
- 18:13You know Andy Hayden and Andy Dalton and those guys said look jk
- 18:18Um the intensity will be amazing. There'll be times in the game when you are
- 18:22Absolutely physically hurting and you just need to go to the well and if you can't go to the well you won't be here too long
- 18:30And um and it was true
- 18:32I remember just before half time we're playing France and they were playing a pretty expansive game
- 18:37And I'd never run so much in all my life and actually was leaning on my knees and my legs were trembling
- 18:44um
- 18:45And I remember like like it was yesterday thinking are you good enough
- 18:50Now we will know and I just
- 18:53Had to get through it but it was in the same breath
- 18:56I got through it pretty quick something happened and
- 18:59You know, I think if you concentrate on that stuff too much
- 19:03You've got to take your mind away from the pain and the way from the hurting and go
- 19:07I need to do my next job. I need to chase the ball as hard as I can and stuff like that and then the mind
- 19:13You know
- 19:14I actually did a quite a bit of work on it afterwards and you know
- 19:18They say that you've still got 80% of energy when your mind tells you it doesn't want to go anymore. So
- 19:24um
- 19:25You know, I think it's I think it's really interesting. I think there's another thing that
- 19:30We're not talking about and is
- 19:32Are we happy that our rules are such that some of the biggest games are being
- 19:38Decided by a TMO
- 19:41Um
- 19:42All the rules that we now have, you know, can we avoid that in any way
- 19:47Do we need to look at the rulebook and get rid of some
- 19:50Um, what are we doing? Are we happy that the third test might be decided by a referee
- 19:56Um, or the law
- 19:58Is that a good or bad thing? So, you know, I walked away
- 20:02Um, and that was an amazing test match, you know
- 20:06Australia were bagged all week including us bagging them
- 20:10Um, and they came out and you know, they performed for 65 minutes and it was a great test match to watch
- 20:17So half the crowd
- 20:19Would have walked away absolutely gutted and then that well probably three quarters and looked like a lot of lines members
- 20:25But you know, they walked away esthetic, but it was came down to uh to a decision
- 20:32And how do we how do we change that was it the right decision? Yep. I think it was
- 20:37Um, but it's still a decision of TMO
- 20:40I mean, I didn't even notice, I don't know about you Victor, but I did when I was watching I didn't even notice
- 20:44Um, you know, I don't like I don't like when a player does that soccer
- 20:51You know, um, and I think there was a bit of that in it which I don't agree with the who like I
- 20:58Well, I'm not criticizing the player for you genuinely was hurt normally when you generally get hurt
- 21:04You don't even think about throwing your arms in the air because it too bloody sore, but I didn't like that action
- 21:10Um, and it seems to be coming into our game because of the law and do we want that you know a lot of the times
- 21:17Our leaders that are really quick to stand up and say, you know, we're values and you know a game blah blah blah
- 21:22But are we creating spaces for that stuff now concerns me a wee bit
- 21:29No, no, maybe come back on the previous point uh about
- 21:33In games when you're that tired. I just think as a team as well
- 21:39There's certain things in a game that gives you energy gives you momentum and a game
- 21:44And I think that is something that a team must know when you've lost momentum in a game
- 21:50What's our go to what do we do to get almost that momentum back?
- 21:54But also once you get momentum the whole team gets energy um
- 21:58I've seen a lot with actually the all Blacks and the Crusaders
- 22:02If they lose it sometimes they just go to a metal rack and they start picking gold
- 22:05Just to get something back in the game with the balls we have certain things
- 22:10I mean when you have to go out you have to defend
- 22:13Wide wide place you don't get off the line you don't
- 22:16Make the eats behind the advantage and then you get tired then you must say listen guys
- 22:20We need to meet some back in this game
- 22:22What's our go to we do we go to to take control back of this game and
- 22:28That's something that teams probably need to work on is to say listen
- 22:32This is what we need when we lose control over game when we lose momentum
- 22:36Why do we do to get back into the game and to to get energy because if you're in the front fruit when things go well
- 22:42No one thinks about being tired. That's when you're under pressure when that happens
- 22:47It's coming on to you
- 22:49That you feel tired so
- 22:52No, it's all about what you can do to
- 22:54Firstly, get the momentum back and secondly to get that energy back so
- 23:00Um, yeah, that's very important in gaps
- 23:03So just to clarify I think Valentini had an injury. I think that was one of the reasons why it's replaced
- 23:08I think another point is that
- 23:10Josh Smith's done an amazing job to get Australia from where they were say that the world cup to where they are now
- 23:16and
- 23:18Also when you looked at that rack there was probably about five or six things that could have been penalized
- 23:23You know, you know, and and you're talking about the dive and you know where they're sealing off and and all that stuff
- 23:29But all the people that were claiming
- 23:32Calling for a penalty are probably the same people that are saying
- 23:36We need to speed the game up
- 23:38There's too many penalties, you know, so we can't have it both ways
- 23:41But whether the things I want to clarify is that you guys both said that this will be three zip to the lines
- 23:47Do you still think that?
- 23:50Just on that first and I mean that that's a reality and that's something
- 23:54Jacob's been talking about if I go back to any rock
- 23:58And I want to find a penalty approach. I'll be able to find a penalty not to make it a try
- 24:03So we must be very careful
- 24:06To go back to something the old time and look because if you look for something the chances are
- 24:1260% there's something you'll find to just allow it try um
- 24:17Will it be three no
- 24:20I'm not sure
- 24:22I still think the Lions but I've been in the 30th match as well where you've
- 24:28One that this year is especially like that one
- 24:31You celebrate or Tuesday. It's very difficult to pick it up for the last test match
- 24:35So it will be interesting to see what Ferrell will do
- 24:39Will he still go to the same team or will he say to a few of the other guys listen guys?
- 24:44Here's your opportunity to get a big victory in
- 24:48And the British and Iceland's test match
- 24:50Allie go the same team because I know the celebrations would have been big
- 24:55It was been party all Saturday all Sunday and sometimes it's very difficult to pick yourself up after that for the test
- 25:04Yeah, I mean I've made history. I think
- 25:07um
- 25:08I saw some media saying if this if this Lions team wants to be great and go into legend
- 25:14Greece that is then they have to win the third test
- 25:16And I don't disagree with that because I think everything that Victor said is so true
- 25:21um
- 25:22You know
- 25:23Your partying you've made history your childhood dreams have come true
- 25:28um and you know you are
- 25:33relaxed for sure
- 25:35So I think if uh
- 25:37Ferrell would make some changes I reckon I think he would
- 25:41Make some changes for that reason for no other reason is that put a bullet up under a few boys and and give them the opportunity to bring energy
- 25:50And to be part of of something very special
- 25:54It's a bloody hard decision for a for a coach, right?
- 25:59Because you normally have a tendency to stay loyal, which is part of the DNA of us as people
- 26:04So
- 26:05Yeah, and I think just getting back to to what Victor said, you know
- 26:08I think the ceiling off rule when I talk about getting rid of summer rules
- 26:12And I don't know if Joel Judge came out in
- 26:15And um actually protected his his referees or came on
- 26:20Line did he record? I know that Nigel Owens who I've got a lot of respect for came out in
- 26:25And went through it really clearly. I don't know if Joel Judge did um
- 26:30But I think ceiling off if you watch northern hemisphere versus southern hemisphere rugby and
- 26:35And um, you know
- 26:36Selling off in northern hemisphere is is way more common than the southern hemisphere
- 26:41So I don't know how you judge that rule if you go back to every single ruck
- 26:47I guarantee that
- 26:48What the Lions did the Australian team did early in the first half you know sealed off
- 26:54Or hit a guy on the shoulder and this is the this is part of the problem of our
- 26:59Of our of our laws and how we interpret them. So for me the problem is
- 27:04You know a referee needs to stay consistent like
- 27:08Like uh victor said there's 18 different decisions that a referee needs to make at every ruck
- 27:14And while we're sitting there on the couch
- 27:16Enjoying it and you're having another pirate um, you know what happens is
- 27:22We sit there and we've got the slow motion. It's like the TMO
- 27:26But the game is so fast and so physical that decision-making is
- 27:31Sometimes
- 27:33Just about impossible. You are just reacting and I don't think we're taking that into a game
- 27:37Like Bodie getting sent off for reaction for the accidental knock on
- 27:42You know, we've got to look at some of this stuff and try and stay take it out of it
- 27:46And we've got to join got to join the the hemispheres
- 27:49So if you watch northern hemisphere rugby the ruck is refereed differently
- 27:54And I think that's part of the challenge of
- 27:56You know northern and southern hemisphere teams playing you need to adjust to the ref
- 28:01And it was a northern hemisphere ref. So he's going to get um, he's gonna give away all net
- 28:09You know sealing off a lot more because that's what he's used to in the northern hemisphere
- 28:13And that was that was awesome
- 28:14But the question was is it gonna be three zipped to the lines like I don't know if you heard that bit but can you give me an answer?
- 28:21Yes, it is
- 28:23Farrell changes his team
- 28:26I agree with Victor, you know if you pick someone like O'Connor you got to play him
- 28:32He's in the team as an older member
- 28:35I agree with what he did with the crusaders he came on a cup of times
- 28:38He kicked a pinch goal
- 28:40So I would be having him on the bench to go on with the last 15 minutes
- 28:44I think I think line is really improving. I think this test was way better than his first test
- 28:49I think he's got a lot of courage. I think he's got a really good kicking game
- 28:53Obviously his goal kicking is really good. So
- 28:56What he'll be looking at and what is old man to be looking at because I played with his old man a lot
- 29:01You know in the last 10 minutes of the first half as a first five did he control the game as well as he should and he might not have had the ball
- 29:08He might not have had the occasion to
- 29:11But as as a young first five those are the types of things you need to look at
- 29:16But I would use I would use Connor. I would use him for sure and I'd bring him on and try and win the last test
- 29:22But I think if Farrell has the courage to change a few players to create
- 29:28Some excitement and some focus and stuff. I think they've just got too much firepower
- 29:35Okay, well there's been a lot of the words I agree with you Victor
- 29:38I agree with you JK this week
- 29:40So I'm going to disagree and I'm going to say Australia is going to win and
- 29:44Because I don't think the lines are is good. I think under pressure
- 29:48They showed that they've got some some weaknesses and I think Australia have got some
- 29:53Mongrel in them this week that they're going to win the game, but let's
- 29:56Let's look at this and I just challenge you there
- 30:00Yeah, they were absolutely unbelievable under pressure you muppet
- 30:04The line they were 2335 down and they came back to 2317 under pressure. That is pressure
- 30:12The only thing they did do well is they they actually did what they need to do under pressure
- 30:18How many skill eras that they make any under pressure?
- 30:22How many skill eras did they make on that test compared to the previous? That's mental mate. That's mental
- 30:26That's that's been overconfident going into it. I think it's going to be too easy. I think so just going to happen, but
- 30:34You gotta I can't leave them I'm with JK on this to come back in that test match to come in that last last minute to school
- 30:41The try I mean everyone don't give those trade-offs a chance to win that test match
- 30:46Under the pump in the last minute you have to go through how many phases to score the try and you do it
- 30:51That's handling the pressure pretty well
- 30:54So you guys are so easy to rock up and get it. It's the only way to get a decent answer out of you
- 30:59Can you can you tell me Victor what you think of the South African squad? There's some bigger missions from that squad for the rugby championship
- 31:06Yeah, it's a few interesting
- 31:09Decisions the biggest one for me is probably Thomas the toy
- 31:13I thought Thomas the toy is probably the best
- 31:15Tilted prop in
- 31:18The Northern hemisphere
- 31:20In the club season the hasn't given me opportunity at Tilted anybody might lose it
- 31:26So that's really interesting for me and then the two guys that were there for the first World Cup
- 31:33I'm a bimbi in Lucania Am all of a sudden not the animals so
- 31:40We knew there's going to be a change of the god at least for it as well
- 31:45Few interesting guys that's left out some other guys getting an opportunity
- 31:50And but yeah, I think this squad looks good
- 31:54I think we still got a lot of depth in that squad
- 31:58But I still think there's one or two guys that probably will be changed throughout the year
- 32:03Even when we get to the end of the year as well
- 32:06What about Faf the clerk? Was that a surprise?
- 32:09He's actually been quite on the edge of the squad for the last three four years
- 32:14He didn't play a lot of rugby last year
- 32:16So they probably had to decide between him and Quibis Rhinach
- 32:21To be almost that experienced scram off and Quibis play well
- 32:26I mean Faf played brilliantly when he came on I had a big impact
- 32:30I think with Quibis being there last year as well
- 32:34Coming back to South Africa to play in South Africa as well
- 32:37You probably just got the nut ahead of Faf
- 32:40I mean there's a really important point of difference
- 32:42I mean the South Africans can leave someone like Faf out
- 32:46Whereas the all blacks have lost Nigel Hotham through injury
- 32:50And that's left us a big hold JK
- 32:52Ah has it
- 32:54Yeah, I think you're talking about well
- 32:58What about our bluesman
- 33:00Finlay Christie totally Finlay Christie's been our second and our first choice up until
- 33:07Razor got in touch or got the got the game. So
- 33:12um
- 33:12I think that you just pick him straight away and you are covered for your third. So
- 33:19Um, I think Hotham's a really good young player and you know, he's injured which is a shame
- 33:23But I think Finlay Christie could come in as third halfback and we don't lose anything
- 33:28Um, I he'll have a point to prove apparently
- 33:31He might have signed overseas
- 33:33But I think in this case of Hotham's out what's he out high angle strain or something
- 33:38Out for a while then you just pick him for the rest of the season where you go
- 33:42So I'm not too concerned about that. I think um
- 33:46You know, I think some of the other injuries
- 33:49I hope obviously they said Barrett's on the mend
- 33:52I think um, you know for me up front
- 33:57We've got um
- 33:59Old mate injured the prop. What's his name? Lomax. Yeah, Lomax. I should have known that
- 34:05Um, so that's that's a bit more of a concern for me than than third halfback. So I think Lomax and you know
- 34:11If you're coming up against South Africa as as Victor has just said if you can leave out some of those
- 34:18some of those front row is that a big
- 34:20Amazing props then front row is going to be a massive and dare I say this Victor
- 34:25Dare I say this that the scrum against South Africa and the line-out is going to be fundamental to our winning. So
- 34:32Um, I think Lomax is a is a bigger bigger loss
- 34:35Lomax has been very good for the all blacks and
- 34:39Actually the all blacks is the one team. We didn't really get the upper hand in the scrubs
- 34:45Uh
- 34:46We've been interesting to see with walker low coming in there now. He's been really good
- 34:50uh
- 34:51For the balls
- 34:53Very strong as well, but we've seen it these days that don't use a scrum as a starting point any more to play from
- 35:01Almost every scrum these first try and get a penalty and after that to play away. So uh
- 35:06Yeah, the set this will be very important and then last year our line-out is actually built with under pressure from the all blacks as well
- 35:13Uh, we've got
- 35:14Louis the young for back
- 35:16Uh, one of the curious man of the match
- 35:18Uh, we've got Franco Mossett in that five position as well. So it will be interesting to see
- 35:23If Russia is going there with the older guys or if he's giving the
- 35:28Young
- 35:29Young says the opportunity to play in a big taste match against all blacks. All those are always straight up
- 35:36Funny how you know we automatically feel that the rugby championship is to be decided between New Zealand and South Africa
- 35:42But we're going to have an Australian team that's coming off the back of a pretty competitive line series
- 35:47And an Argentinian team that beat the line. So it's shaping up to be a hell of a series
- 35:52Oh, I think I think the the the team that's at biggest risk is South Africa
- 35:58Because they haven't had the games that they need to start the championship. So
- 36:05They've got Australia and I think Australia have like
- 36:09Regardless of the
- 36:10Regardless of the the decision the result this week
- 36:15You know, they'll be a better team for that
- 36:18We've played a pretty good French side, you know, I think Victor you should be worried because
- 36:23You might be a little bit underdone for your first test
- 36:26Maybe you should be worried because you struggle to be to see a French city but
- 36:33Think whatever you want. I think the bots will be prepared
- 36:36I also think it's great that we start in South Africa. I think Australia is actually
- 36:42We'll probably see
- 36:45That they improve as much as we think
- 36:49In the rugby championship again because you need to be consistent you play four five tough games in a row
- 36:55And that's the same thing for Argentina. We know Argentina can beat any team on any day
- 37:02But can they do it three four weeks in a row and that's the thing that you need to ask and that's the same question that
- 37:07Australia will have to answer so
- 37:10I think we fortunate that we start in South Africa
- 37:13But up a little bit momentum and then come over to New Zealand and
- 37:18Break that long-standing record at Indian Park
- 37:22Ricardo actually I called you a map it before but you actually do look like that girl that sits up in the
- 37:27Sits up in the
- 37:30In the in the in the balcony in the balcony and heckles people that a little bit like you but I think
- 37:37Um to talk about your statement before and to sort of add to Victor's statement. I think that you know
- 37:46If the Lions aren't that good then we will see
- 37:51On Australia's results in the in the championship
- 37:55You know, they're going to grow from this um
- 37:58And
- 38:00The Lions
- 38:02You know
- 38:03We're not the side that we think they are I disagree with you. I think they're unbelievable side. I think that they've got
- 38:10pressure players right across the park
- 38:12But it's a massive championship for Aussie
- 38:15Joe Smith's leaving you know, I agree. I think they've come on leaps and bounds
- 38:19But I don't like them chat talking like they're
- 38:21Like they're a
- 38:23Second Nation they need to get that out of their dialogue
- 38:26And they need some really big results in the championship. Otherwise, it's been um
- 38:32You know, for me, it's a real concern. I love when Aussie is strong. I love when they win test matches
- 38:39I don't like that they're doing one off, you know
- 38:43Like and New Zealand. We've been a little bit guilty of that in the last few years
- 38:46And maybe it's because everyone's so much better but I just think
- 38:51That
- 38:52If Australia cannot perform at the highest level it really puts the whole southern hemisphere
- 38:58under pressure
- 39:00To understand what our competition is
- 39:03Preparing our players for if test match rugby is the ultimate
- 39:08So that's my biggest worry. I'm really intrigued
- 39:10About the championship. I'm really intrigued to see where we are all against victors South Africa because
- 39:17They are world champions. They have just won the under 20 world cup
- 39:21Although they they've bought everyone to death
- 39:24With malls and shit, but you know, they've got you see that back three of us
- 39:29Okay, they're still in the ball Victor. I don't give them the ball mate
- 39:36And ever give me the ball
- 39:39But he more more more more
- 39:44But you know South Africa are the pinnacle South Africa are the you know the level and last year
- 39:51I think we let opportunity go
- 39:54You know in South Africa. I thought we had them on the ropes and and couldn't quite finish them off
- 39:59So this championship for me is a massive one around who's got the depth
- 40:04How we're looking for the next world cup
- 40:06All right, we got it just again. I think we haven't given enough credit probably to Australia and to Josh
- 40:13We said he's a great coach and if someone can
- 40:16Do something for Australia record would be him. So
- 40:20I mean the way they came back after that first test is just unbelievable and
- 40:26They were really up for it. They were physically up for it. I think they were well prepared
- 40:32And but unfortunately
- 40:35You need to be mental tough and
- 40:38Just for me at this stage feels like they're very happy with the game that they're glad
- 40:43But like Jake I said they were
- 40:453-5 up and home and home you can never lose that and that's where they need to grow
- 40:51If they want to beat South Africa if they want to beat New Zealand consistently
- 40:57You need to be mental tough and you can't so
- 41:00Leads like that especially at home
- 41:02Away to do certain things
- 41:05Right, I think on that note we've had so much agreement with you too
- 41:08The good thing is that you can always disagree on who the best team is between South Africa and New Zealand
- 41:14And you both don't like Australia. So appreciate that. Thank you
- 41:17I can just send you the world rankings if you want to
- 41:20So that I have to argue we know is the number one
- 41:23And I can send two World Cup through that
- 41:26Want to mention the World Cup in every show we do
- 41:30Of course double the world champion. Sorry. I cannot wait to win the next one
- 41:38What if we win the triple
- 41:40Oh
- 41:42And you're going to do two shows a week for me to mention I don't I don't even want to think about that Victor. I do not even want to think about that now
- 41:52I was going on the cup the other day actually Victor thinking
- 41:58Um
- 41:59You know this rivalry between New Zealand and South Africa what so the Africa has achieved
- 42:04um
- 42:06You know, it is absolutely amazing and what I love about it is that
- 42:12Um, we need to take that mantle back. We need to do everything we can we need to look at you copper you
- 42:19Understand what's going on. You know, I keep asking you about your development and all that sort of stuff
- 42:23You're under 20s just one
- 42:26So you must be immensely proud, but it really annoys me. So is that are you cricket fans?
- 42:33Yeah, we've been watching this
- 42:35Master's that you see ABDA Villiers hitting 100 or 41 and then 100 or 38
- 42:40Now what's the masters?
- 42:42So seniors like the legends
- 42:44They playing in the UK at the moment ABDA Villiers is just killing it wrong
- 42:51Smashing them all over I did see that we beat South Africa this week in the cricket
- 42:57Is it yeah
- 43:00That's a bubbly
- 43:04I need to run. Thank you
