- 0:00Speaker 1: Three hold-up men rob and beat two Los Angeles supermarket operators,
- 0:04Speaker 1: sending Detective Sergeant Joe Friday and Officer Frank Smith to
- 0:09Speaker 1: robbery detail. Witness descriptions and a chain of leads point
- 0:14Speaker 1: toward an obvious suspect, until that man appears to have
- 0:17Speaker 1: an airtight alibi in Phoenix. Friday and Smith follow those
- 0:22Speaker 1: leads from the LAPD robbery detail day watch, checking the
- 0:26Speaker 1: evidence behind that contradiction. On November 17th, 1953, NBC presented Dragnet,
- 0:34Speaker 1: episode 222, Big Flight, with Jack Webb as Friday and
- 0:39Speaker 1: Ben Alexander as Smith. Chesterfield was the sponsor. And now,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the original broadcast.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Dragnet.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen. The story you are about to hear
- 0:54Speaker 3: is true.
- 0:55Speaker 4: The names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're
- 1:05Speaker 4: a detective sergeant. You're assigned a robbery detail. Three hold-up
- 1:09Speaker 4: men have robbed and beaten two supermarket operators in your city.
- 1:13Speaker 4: You've got a good description of the thieves. Your job,
- 1:16Speaker 4: get them.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It was Tuesday, November 3rd. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 1:25Speaker 2: We were working the day watch out a robbery detail.
- 1:27Speaker 2: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Chief of Detectives
- 1:29Speaker 2: Thad Brown. My name's Friday. We'd gotten a hot shot
- 1:32Speaker 2: call about a robbery and it was 9.46 a.m. when
- 1:34Speaker 2: we got to the corner of Lockwood and Barton Avenues.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The Lockton Market.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Officer back there.
- 1:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Friday and Smith, Central Robbery.
- 1:45Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, I'm Jackson, Unit 387.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You answered the call?
- 1:48Speaker 5: Yeah, we got here a couple of minutes ago.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Where's the victim?
- 1:50Speaker 5: Back room there.
- 1:51Speaker 3: He's pretty bad off.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Ambulance attendant's with him now.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 1:54Speaker 6: My partner's checking the neighborhood. If there's nothing you need
- 1:57Speaker 6: me for, I'll give him a hand.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Yeah, make a 211 report for your lead, will you?
- 2:00Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Looks like there was quite a fight. Yeah, stuff all
- 2:06Speaker 3: over the place. Come on.
- 2:11Speaker 5: What do you got in that bottle?
- 2:12Speaker 6: It sure stinks.
- 2:13Speaker 3: I got to clean up these cuts.
- 2:14Speaker 6: I'll try to hold still.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Ow! Hey, take it easy, huh?
- 2:19Speaker 6: Yeah, something you want?
- 2:20Speaker 3: We're out of central robbery. Is this the victim? Yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 3: a couple of cuts.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Nothing serious.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Tell him about Andy.
- 2:24Speaker 6: He's the one who really got it.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Who's Andy? The other clerk.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Pretty rough.
- 2:28Speaker 6: Looks like it might be a fractured jaw.
- 2:29Speaker 3: He's on the truck now.
- 2:31Speaker 6: Now, let me get this tape on you now, huh? Ow!
- 2:37Speaker 6: That should do it. Might be a good idea if
- 2:39Speaker 6: you saw your doctor.
- 2:40Speaker 5: Yeah, what about Andy? We're going to take him down.
- 2:42Speaker 6: To Georgia Street receiving.
- 2:44Speaker 5: You going to call me and let me know about him?
- 2:45Speaker 6: It might be better if you call them.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 2:48Speaker 5: I'll see you guys, huh?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, all right. Thanks. Yeah, sure.
- 2:54Speaker 6: Boy, that one guy really clouded me.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Hurt. Mm-hmm.
- 2:57Speaker 3: What did he feel after telling us what happened here?
- 2:59Speaker 5: Three of them.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Three.
- 3:00Speaker 7: He came in and held up the place, clouded me
- 3:02Speaker 7: and Andy.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Sure hope he's going to be all right.
- 3:04Speaker 6: What's your name, sir?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Cliff Hall. You own the store, do you?
- 3:08Speaker 6: No, me and Andy run it, though. We'd like to
- 3:09Speaker 6: buy it.
- 3:10Speaker 3: What time did these men come in?
- 3:12Speaker 6: Must have been around 9.30, around in there.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Did you give the officers or answer the call or
- 3:16Speaker 3: description of the men?
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that was the first thing they asked me.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Go ahead, please.
- 3:19Speaker 7: I was getting the money ready for the bank deposit.
- 3:21Speaker 7: Andy was back here stacking bottle cases. These three guys
- 3:24Speaker 7: came in. First off, I thought they were customers.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 7: A couple of them walked to the back of the place.
- 3:28Speaker 7: I thought they were picking out stuff. The other one
- 3:30Speaker 7: kind of stood around by the cash register where I was.
- 3:33Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Well, after he was there for.
- 3:35Speaker 7: A minute and I see the other two aren't picking
- 3:37Speaker 7: up nothing, I asked him if there was something I
- 3:38Speaker 7: could get for him.
- 3:39Speaker 6: That's when he pulled out a gun.
- 3:40Speaker 3: What about the other two?
- 3:41Speaker 7: Oh, it worked like they had some kind of signal.
- 3:43Speaker 7: As soon as the one in front pulled his gun,
- 3:45Speaker 7: the other two did too. The fellow asked me to
- 3:47Speaker 7: put all the money in a paper bag. Got the
- 3:49Speaker 7: bag from up in front there. Took it right out
- 3:51Speaker 7: of the stack and handed it to him. He said
- 3:53Speaker 7: for me to put the dough in it.
- 3:54Speaker 3: You recall his exact words?
- 3:56Speaker 2: What? The way he said it, the words he used.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You recall them?
- 3:59Speaker 6: Let me see. I think it was... Put all the
- 4:01Speaker 6: dough in this bag. Don't say anything.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Just do as I say.
- 4:04Speaker 6: That was the way he said.
- 4:06Speaker 2: What'd you do then?
- 4:07Speaker 6: Like he said.
- 4:08Speaker 7: He had that gun pointed right at me. I could
- 4:09Speaker 7: see the other two guys. I wasn't going to do
- 4:11Speaker 7: anything but what he told me. I put the money
- 4:12Speaker 7: in the bag. I thought they'd leave the place, but
- 4:15Speaker 7: that's when Andy came out. I guess he wondered what
- 4:17Speaker 7: the other two were after. You see, from where he was,
- 4:19Speaker 7: he couldn't see the guns. He walked out to them,
- 4:22Speaker 7: asked if there was anything special they were looking for.
- 4:25Speaker 3: What happened then?
- 4:26Speaker 7: Then he saw what was happening. Saw the guns and
- 4:29Speaker 7: he tried to throw the guys out. I don't know
- 4:30Speaker 7: why he did it. Andy's like that. He gets an
- 4:32Speaker 7: idea in his head and there isn't anything that'll shake
- 4:34Speaker 7: it loose. He tied into those two guys. Almost had
- 4:36Speaker 7: him whipped, too, even with the guns. The guy that
- 4:39Speaker 7: was with me saw what was going on and yelled
- 4:40Speaker 7: back at him, told him not to shoot. He ran
- 4:43Speaker 7: back and laid his gun alongside Andy's head. It all
- 4:45Speaker 7: clouded him right along in here. Andy dropped like a
- 4:48Speaker 7: sack of potatoes and the three guys ran.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Out of the store. How much money did they get,
- 4:52Speaker 3: do you know?
- 4:53Speaker 6: I hadn't finished up with the bank statement yet.
- 4:54Speaker 7: I'd just be guessing, but I'd say about $ 8, 000... Might
- 4:58Speaker 7: run to.
- 4:58Speaker 6: 8'5, but that's about it.
- 4:59Speaker 5: I see.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Now, if you could just give us a description of
- 5:01Speaker 3: the man. All three of them?
- 5:02Speaker 2: If you could, yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 7: The one who was with me must have been about 5'11.
- 5:07Speaker 7: Kind of dark complected, had straight black hair.
- 5:09Speaker 3: What color were his eyes? Brown. He have any marks
- 5:12Speaker 3: or scars you could see? No. Clean shaven?
- 5:15Speaker 7: Yeah, he had a real dark beard. Looked kind of
- 5:16Speaker 7: like he had some kind of talcum powder on.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Do you remember how he was dressed? Let's see.
- 5:22Speaker 6: Dark blue suit, gray top coat, gray hat.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Was he wearing a tie, do you know?
- 5:27Speaker 6: Yeah, a gray tie with maroon stripes. You know, kind
- 5:29Speaker 6: of diagonal. A thin tie.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Anything unusual about him? Make it easier for us to
- 5:33Speaker 3: identify him?
- 5:34Speaker 6: No, I don't think so.
- 5:35Speaker 3: How about the gun he was carrying? What kind was it?
- 5:37Speaker 6: I couldn't see the name.
- 5:38Speaker 2: No, sir.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I mean, was it an automatic or revolver?
- 5:41Speaker 5: Oh, an automatic.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Looked like a big caliber.
- 5:43Speaker 3: I'd say.
- 5:43Speaker 5: 45.
- 5:45Speaker 7: One of the other fellas had a revolver, but the
- 5:46Speaker 7: guy with me.
- 5:47Speaker 6: And the small one had automatics.
- 5:49Speaker 3: You know if they drove a car?
- 5:50Speaker 7: If they did, I didn't see it. Might have had
- 5:52Speaker 7: it parked right out in front for all I know.
- 5:53Speaker 7: I told you, I was busy when they came in.
- 5:56Speaker 7: When they left, I was too worried about Andy to
- 5:57Speaker 7: pay any attention to him. The way they hit him,
- 6:00Speaker 7: a terrible thing, right along here.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Oh, excuse me a minute. I got some aspirin here
- 6:03Speaker 5: in the drawer.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 6:05Speaker 6: I sure hope Andy's going to be all right. We've
- 6:07Speaker 6: been together a long time. Can't get over that little guy,
- 6:11Speaker 6: the one who hit me. I should have taken him.
- 6:13Speaker 6: But the big one, he's a tough looking, a real fighter.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Well, this isn't going to help much. Huh? He's going
- 6:17Speaker 3: to lose this one.
- 6:25Speaker 2: We got the descriptions of the other two men and
- 6:26Speaker 2: a supplementary local broadcast was gotten out. The two officers
- 6:29Speaker 2: who'd answered the call found a woman in the neighborhood
- 6:31Speaker 2: who'd seen three men leave the vicinity immediately after the robbery.
- 6:35Speaker 2: She said that she was parked in a car half
- 6:37Speaker 2: a block from the store on the same side of
- 6:38Speaker 2: the street. She explained that about 9.20 a.m., a car
- 6:41Speaker 2: had pulled into a parking place in front of her.
- 6:44Speaker 2: She'd seen three men leave the car and walk down
- 6:46Speaker 2: the sidewalk in the direction of the Lockton Market. About
- 6:49Speaker 2: ten minutes later, the men came back to the car.
- 6:51Speaker 2: They appeared to be in a hurry. One of the
- 6:53Speaker 2: men was upset and arguing.
- 6:54Speaker 3: With the other two.
- 6:56Speaker 2: She told the officers that they'd gotten into the car
- 6:58Speaker 2: and driven off toward Hollywood Boulevard. We asked her to
- 7:00Speaker 2: describe the three men. The description she gave us matched
- 7:03Speaker 2: the one we'd gotten of the thieves. She gave us
- 7:05Speaker 2: a description of the car, and another supplementary broadcast was
- 7:08Speaker 2: put out. We asked her to come down to City
- 7:10Speaker 2: Hall to go through the mug books to see if
- 7:11Speaker 2: she could give us a positive identification. The report from
- 7:14Speaker 2: Georgia Street Receiving Hospital indicated that the victim of the slugging,
- 7:17Speaker 2: Andrew Rich, was suffering from a fractured jaw and a concussion.
- 7:21Speaker 2: He was given emergency treatment and removed to the county hospital.
- 7:25Speaker 2: The crime lab crew came out and they went over
- 7:26Speaker 2: the store for physical evidence. They were able to lift
- 7:29Speaker 2: three partial fingerprints from the counter next to the cash register.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Dean Bergman in latent prints explained that the partials were
- 7:35Speaker 2: not enough for identification, but that if we apprehended the
- 7:38Speaker 2: holdup men, he'd be able to tell us if they'd
- 7:39Speaker 2: left the impressions. 10.27 a.m. We took the victim Clifford
- 7:43Speaker 2: Hall and the woman who'd seen the car to the
- 7:45Speaker 2: mug room. They went through the mug books, but they
- 7:47Speaker 2: were unable to come up with an identification. We had
- 7:49Speaker 2: the stats office make a run on the M.O., They
- 7:51Speaker 2: came back with a list of 17 names of men
- 7:53Speaker 2: who at one time or another had used the same
- 7:55Speaker 2: method of operation. The list was split, and Sergeants Meade
- 7:58Speaker 2: and Leitner worked with us in checking the names out. Thursday, 3.48 p.m.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Frank and I got to the sixth name on our list.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Jerry Evanston, that right?
- 8:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:07Speaker 3: It's sure dark in this hall.
- 8:09Speaker 2: We ought to wash the windows, let some light in.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, here we are. Why not be in? Yeah, we'll
- 8:18Speaker 3: try it again. Now let's talk to the manager. Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 8:27Speaker 5: Who is it?
- 8:29Speaker 3: Manager, we want to see you a minute.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Mr. Mann.
- 8:39Speaker 6: What do you want?
- 8:40Speaker 5: A sleep?
- 8:40Speaker 3: Come on, Emerson, open up.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, well, get out of here, please.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Come on, come on. Watch it, Joe.
- 8:44Speaker 7: All right.
- 8:46Speaker 2: All right, come on, Emerson, get up.
- 8:48Speaker 5: What are you doing, McQueen? Look, you got no right
- 8:51Speaker 5: to come busting in here like this.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you're so clean. What are you putting that trouble for?
- 8:54Speaker 5: I get scared, that's all. I just get scared.
- 8:56Speaker 8: How do you feel if somebody woke you up and
- 8:59Speaker 8: shoves their way into your room?
- 9:00Speaker 5: You ain't gonna stand around and just let them do it.
- 9:04Speaker 3: He's clean, Joe.
- 9:04Speaker 8: I told you that. Look, I got no trouble and
- 9:07Speaker 8: I don't want none. You check with Galloway, he'll tell you.
- 9:09Speaker 8: I'm home every night at 9 o'clock, every night.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Where were you this morning? Huh?
- 9:13Speaker 2: This morning, where were you?
- 9:14Speaker 5: What time?
- 9:15Speaker 3: You just tell us what you did starting when he
- 9:16Speaker 3: got up.
- 9:17Speaker 6: I was up all night. I got a virus or something.
- 9:20Speaker 6: I couldn't sleep.
- 9:21Speaker 8: Take a look there in the dresser. You can see
- 9:22Speaker 8: the stuff I've been taking. I haven't been out of
- 9:25Speaker 8: this room, not for a couple of days.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Can you prove that?
- 9:27Speaker 6: Why?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Can you?
- 9:29Speaker 5: No, there wasn't anybody here.
- 9:31Speaker 3: You get any phone calls?
- 9:32Speaker 2: No.
- 9:34Speaker 8: I don't know what this is all about, but you
- 9:35Speaker 8: guys are leaning on me for nothing. Now, you talk
- 9:37Speaker 8: to Galloway. He'll tell you I've been working.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Well, look here. I'll show you.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Where are you going?
- 9:40Speaker 5: I just want to show you something I got in
- 9:42Speaker 5: the drawer.
- 9:42Speaker 2: You stay right there.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I'll get it for you.
- 9:44Speaker 6: Okay, I got nothing to hide.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Take a look in the top drawer there, left-hand side. Yeah.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Please, what you mean?
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it. Now, take the rubber band off and look.
- 9:55Speaker 5: You'll see I'm telling you the truth.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Now, you see?
- 10:00Speaker 6: It's all the check receipts I've gotten from where I work.
- 10:02Speaker 5: You look at them. I'm working every day and I'm
- 10:03Speaker 5: home at night, oh, 9 o'clock every night.
- 10:06Speaker 3: How about it, Joe? Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 5: Now, you see?
- 10:09Speaker 3: You haven't been out of this room all day, huh?
- 10:10Speaker 2: Not a minute.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Now, come on. What's all this about, anyway?
- 10:13Speaker 6: What are you guys after?
- 10:14Speaker 2: We figured maybe you could tell us. Yeah?
- 10:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:17Speaker 6: I'm sorry. Without you telling me what you want, there's
- 10:19Speaker 6: nothing I can give you.
- 10:20Speaker 3: You see any of the boys anymore?
- 10:21Speaker 5: You mean the fellas I knew before I fell?
- 10:24Speaker 3: That's right.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Not if I can help it.
- 10:25Speaker 6: I'm trying to stay away from them.
- 10:26Speaker 3: See any of them lately?
- 10:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:28Speaker 6: I saw Alex a couple days ago.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Alex?
- 10:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:32Speaker 8: Alex Finley. I knew him when I was up in Q.
- 10:34Speaker 8: He came in where I was working. Did you talk
- 10:36Speaker 8: to him at all? I just said hello. Past couple
- 10:38Speaker 8: of minutes talking about some of the guys we knew.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Seeing the rackets now?
- 10:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Is he on parole?
- 10:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I think so.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Did he give you anything?
- 10:45Speaker 8: Oh, a couple of rumbles, but if I turn them
- 10:47Speaker 8: over to you, I don't want a credit for them.
- 10:49Speaker 8: You don't know where you got them.
- 10:50Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:51Speaker 8: Alex tells me there's a gang that's going to start
- 10:53Speaker 8: working here in town, market jobs.
- 10:54Speaker 2: How many men?
- 10:56Speaker 6: From what Alex says, there's four, all heavy guys.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Finley with them?
- 10:59Speaker 5: No, I don't think so. He told it to me
- 11:01Speaker 5: that he just heard it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Did he say anything about who the four men are?
- 11:04Speaker 5: No, I don't think he knew.
- 11:05Speaker 6: He just said they were heavy and they were starting
- 11:07Speaker 6: to work.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You know where we can get in touch with Alex?
- 11:09Speaker 5: No. Well, you might check with Galloway at the parole office.
- 11:12Speaker 5: He might have it.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Yeah, we will.
- 11:13Speaker 8: I'll probably see him again. I'll try to get the
- 11:15Speaker 8: information if I can. Well, what does you want to know?
- 11:19Speaker 6: Who the guys are?
- 11:19Speaker 3: That's right.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:21Speaker 8: Now, like I told you, though, I don't want any
- 11:23Speaker 8: credit for it. I'm in real trouble if it gets
- 11:25Speaker 8: around that I'm playing footsie with you.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 11:27Speaker 5: I'll try to find out when they're going to start working, too.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Well, don't you worry about that.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Huh?
- 11:31Speaker 2: We already know that. 4.10 p.m. We got in touch
- 11:37Speaker 2: with Fred Galloway at the state adult parole offices and
- 11:39Speaker 2: we checked on Jerry Evanston. From what the record showed,
- 11:41Speaker 2: the story Evanston had told us was true. His parole
- 11:44Speaker 2: officer had reported him working and apparently living up to
- 11:46Speaker 2: the conditions of his release. We left him one of
- 11:49Speaker 2: our cards and asked him to call us in the
- 11:50Speaker 2: event he heard from Alex Finley. 4.21 p.m. We checked
- 11:54Speaker 2: back into the office and we met with Sergeants Meade
- 11:56Speaker 2: and Leitner.
- 11:57Speaker 3: They told us that they'd checked out.
- 11:58Speaker 2: The names on their half of the list without results.
- 12:01Speaker 2: We sent a teletype up to George Brereton, CII, Sacramento,
- 12:03Speaker 2: giving him the description of the holdup men and listing
- 12:05Speaker 2: the M.O.
- 12:06Speaker 5: That they'd used.
- 12:07Speaker 2: We asked him to run the information through their files
- 12:09Speaker 2: and forward any information they came up with. 5.19 p.m.
- 12:13Speaker 2: We went out to get something to eat and then
- 12:14Speaker 2: we checked back into the office.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Good dinner, huh, Joe? Yeah.
- 12:18Speaker 2: I never saw a guy could eat so many enchiladas
- 12:20Speaker 2: as you. Yeah, I can't help it.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Get started on them.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Can't seem to stop.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 3: You got any soda in your locker?
- 12:26Speaker 2: No.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You got trouble again? You know I always do when
- 12:29Speaker 3: we have enchiladas. You ought to remember that when you
- 12:30Speaker 3: order a half a dozen. I suppose so.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I get it. Robbery Friday, yep. When was that?
- 12:39Speaker 3: You're pretty sure, are they? Has the lab been called yet?
- 12:44Speaker 5: Yep.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Okay.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Right, thanks. Oh, that's a break.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 12:49Speaker 3: They just found the getaway car.
- 12:50Speaker 2: 6.47 p.m., we left the office and drove out to
- 12:57Speaker 2: where the car had been found. It was parked on
- 12:59Speaker 2: Lockwood Avenue, five blocks from the market that had been robbed.
- 13:03Speaker 2: The radio car officers who spotted it had called the
- 13:05Speaker 2: office immediately when they saw a brown paper bag in
- 13:07Speaker 2: the back seat bearing the printed name Lockton Market. A
- 13:11Speaker 2: crew from Leighton Prince came out and went over the car.
- 13:13Speaker 2: They were able to come up with a single print
- 13:15Speaker 2: from a man's index finger. Bergman compared it with the
- 13:18Speaker 2: partials found at the market. They matched. We checked the
- 13:21Speaker 2: white slip in the car and found that the vehicle
- 13:23Speaker 2: was stolen... The report on it had been filed at 10.37 a.m.
- 13:26Speaker 2: that morning. We talked with the people in the immediate vicinity,
- 13:29Speaker 2: but none of them were able to tell us anything
- 13:31Speaker 2: about the people who'd parked the car. However, we did
- 13:33Speaker 2: come up with an elderly man who told us that
- 13:35Speaker 2: he'd seen three men get into another car at about 9.45
- 13:38Speaker 2: that morning. He said that he remembered it because the
- 13:40Speaker 2: driver of the car had pulled into a parking space
- 13:42Speaker 2: and stopped the motor. Another automobile had parked directly in
- 13:45Speaker 2: front of the car, and the driver of the first
- 13:47Speaker 2: machine had moved so that there was no one in
- 13:48Speaker 2: front of him. The man went on to say that
- 13:51Speaker 2: a few minutes after the driver pulled into the second
- 13:52Speaker 2: parking place, three men had come around the corner, gotten
- 13:55Speaker 2: into the car, and the four of them had driven off.
- 13:58Speaker 2: The witness was unable to give us a description of
- 14:00Speaker 2: the car other than to say that it was a
- 14:01Speaker 2: late model Plymouth or Ford. The only description he could
- 14:04Speaker 2: give us of the men was that one of them
- 14:06Speaker 2: was large and was wearing a gray top coat and
- 14:08Speaker 2: a hat, and that one.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Of them was small. 8.40 p.m.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Frank and I went back to the office and checked
- 14:13Speaker 2: out for the night. The following morning at 8.02 a.m.,
- 14:16Speaker 2: I checked back in for work. Hi, Joe. Morning. Kind
- 14:20Speaker 2: of cold out. Yeah. You look happy this morning.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I didn't sleep a wink last night, Joe. Not a wink.
- 14:27Speaker 3: What's the matter? Stomach.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Next time I even think about eating enchiladas, stop me,
- 14:31Speaker 2: will you, Joe? Yeah, sure. Any mail come in?
- 14:35Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 14:35Speaker 5: I just got in.
- 14:40Speaker 2: There's an ad here from that store over on West 6th.
- 14:42Speaker 2: They're having their annual sale. Yeah?
- 14:44Speaker 3: I want to try to get over there. I'd like
- 14:45Speaker 3: to get me a new suit for Christmas. Yeah, there's
- 14:49Speaker 3: a special delivery from Bracken.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Huh?
- 14:51Speaker 3: Probably those mugs we asked for. I'll see.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah, there's six of them.
- 14:58Speaker 3: You want to get in touch with Cliff Hall? We
- 14:59Speaker 3: can drive over and have him take a look at them. Yeah.
- 15:01Speaker 2: You got any other pictures? Yeah, we can mix them up.
- 15:03Speaker 2: I'll call Hall.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I sure hope we get an ident. We haven't got
- 15:10Speaker 2: much to go on.
- 15:12Speaker 3: There's got to be a break someplace. We've got to
- 15:14Speaker 3: find it.
- 15:15Speaker 2: From what Finley said about the gang starting up an operation,
- 15:17Speaker 2: it doesn't sound like just one job. No.
- 15:19Speaker 3: They start on a string, they can do a lot
- 15:21Speaker 3: of damage. Well, it doesn't give us much choice, does it?
- 15:23Speaker 2: No. We've got to get to them. 8.27 a.m. Frank
- 15:30Speaker 2: and I left the office and drove over to talk
- 15:32Speaker 2: to the victim, Cliff Hall. We showed him the mug
- 15:34Speaker 2: shots George Brereton had sent us. He picked one out
- 15:37Speaker 2: and said that he was positive that the man in
- 15:38Speaker 2: the picture was the one who'd held him up. The
- 15:40Speaker 2: name on the mug shot was Harold Bishop. According to
- 15:43Speaker 2: the record Brereton had sent us, Bishop had been convicted
- 15:45Speaker 2: twice on violation of 211 PC.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Armed robbery. 9.20 a.m.
- 15:50Speaker 2: We drove over to the county hospital and showed the
- 15:51Speaker 2: pictures to the other victim, Andrew Rich.
- 15:53Speaker 3: He picked the.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Mugshot of Bishop as the suspect who'd robbed and beaten him.
- 15:57Speaker 2: The notation on Bishop's picture gave us the information that
- 15:59Speaker 2: he was on parole at the time. We returned to
- 16:01Speaker 2: the office and put in a call to Fred Galloway
- 16:03Speaker 2: at the state adult parole office. Yeah, Fred, this is
- 16:05Speaker 2: Joe Friday.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Yeah, fine. We'd like some information on a Harold Bishop.
- 16:12Speaker 2: San Francisco number 82609. Two sixes.
- 16:17Speaker 3: That's right.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Male, white, Caucasian. We got a mug from Braden. No,
- 16:22Speaker 2: he says he's on parole. Yeah, if you will.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Thanks a lot. He's checking the master file now. Me
- 16:28Speaker 3: and Leitner are standing by if we need him. When
- 16:30Speaker 3: we get this address, we're going to have to move fast. Yeah. Yeah, Fred.
- 16:33Speaker 2: When was that? Well, how's his report there? I see. No,
- 16:40Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, I suppose. All right, Fred.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Well, you can tell Meaden Lightner to relax. Bishop's got
- 16:49Speaker 2: an out-of-state parole. He's living over in Phoenix. Well, he
- 16:52Speaker 2: still could be getting into California. No, not likely. Huh?
- 16:54Speaker 3: Fred checked with his parole officer.
- 16:56Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 16:56Speaker 2: He's got a job, and he's been reporting to his
- 16:57Speaker 2: parole officer every month. We asked Fred Galloway at the
- 17:08Speaker 2: state parole office to contact Bishop's parole officer in Phoenix
- 17:12Speaker 2: and check him closely.
- 17:13Speaker 3: The report came.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Back that the suspect had a job with a small
- 17:16Speaker 2: contractor and that he'd been working regularly. He'd also been
- 17:19Speaker 2: giving monthly reports to his officer. We'd had a suspect
- 17:23Speaker 2: identified by two of his victims, and yet if the
- 17:25Speaker 2: information we'd gotten was correct, it would have been a
- 17:27Speaker 2: physical impossibility for him to have committed the robbery. We
- 17:31Speaker 2: got a copy of his jacket and looked over his
- 17:33Speaker 2: past records. We found that Bishop had been arrested for
- 17:36Speaker 2: armed robbery the first time 18 years previously. He'd been
- 17:39Speaker 2: brought to trial and acquitted. The next arrest was 10
- 17:42Speaker 2: months after his trial. He'd been convicted and served six
- 17:45Speaker 2: years at San Quentin. He'd been released, and within six months,
- 17:48Speaker 2: Bishop had been picked up again. This time, he was
- 17:51Speaker 2: sent to Folsom Penitentiary. While he was there, he appeared
- 17:54Speaker 2: to be a model prisoner, and after serving four and
- 17:56Speaker 2: a half years, he'd been placed on parole. After leaving
- 17:59Speaker 2: the prison, he'd requested and been granted an out-of-state leave.
- 18:03Speaker 2: In checking Bishop's M.O., we found that it matched exactly
- 18:06Speaker 2: that of the thieves who'd held up the Lockton Market.
- 18:09Speaker 2: The time of approach was the same. The number of
- 18:11Speaker 2: men used was the same. The method of leaving the
- 18:13Speaker 2: scene was exact. We had a suspect, and yet he
- 18:16Speaker 2: couldn't have committed the crime. Three weeks passed. On Saturday,
- 18:20Speaker 2: November 26th, the thieves hit again. In checking with the victims,
- 18:23Speaker 2: they identified the mugshot of Bishop. We put in a
- 18:26Speaker 2: long-distance call to the Phoenix Police Department and asked them
- 18:28Speaker 2: to check on the suspect. We got word back that
- 18:30Speaker 2: he was in their city. They told us that he
- 18:32Speaker 2: wasn't at work due to a virus infection. They went
- 18:34Speaker 2: on to say that they checked with his landlady and
- 18:36Speaker 2: that she told them that Bishop hadn't left his apartment
- 18:38Speaker 2: at all on the day of the theft. Monday, November 28th.
- 18:42Speaker 3: We got our first break in the case.
- 18:44Speaker 5: I'll get it.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Robbery, Smith.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, Jerry. Uh-huh. You sure about that? Sure. Where?
- 18:56Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 18:57Speaker 3: How about the rest of them?
- 18:58Speaker 5: Yeah, just a minute.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Toss me that pad, will you, Joe? Yeah, here.
- 19:03Speaker 3: You go.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Okay, Jerry, go ahead.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. How do you spell that? L-A-L-E-A-H-Y?
- 19:11Speaker 2: Uh-huh, I got it.
- 19:14Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 19:15Speaker 3: You know the address?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:20Speaker 9: Okay, thanks, Jerry.
- 19:21Speaker 2: We'll get in touch with you.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Jerry Evanston.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Remember the guy we.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Talked to over on South 7th?
- 19:26Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, the way he tells it, we aren't too
- 19:28Speaker 3: far off. What do you mean? He saw Bishop in
- 19:29Speaker 3: town last Saturday.
- 19:35Speaker 2: We put in a call and we found that there
- 19:37Speaker 2: were two major airlines with flights to Phoenix. The flight
- 19:40Speaker 2: time they listed was one hour and 35 minutes by air.
- 19:43Speaker 2: If Bishop caught the last flight leaving Phoenix, he could
- 19:45Speaker 2: arrive in Los Angeles at 11.20 p.m., the night before
- 19:48Speaker 2: he planned.
- 19:48Speaker 3: To commit a robbery.
- 19:49Speaker 2: The next day, he would be in Phoenix. day after
- 19:50Speaker 2: the holdup, he could catch a plane from the Los
- 19:52Speaker 2: Angeles International Airport that would have him back in Phoenix
- 19:54Speaker 2: at 8.25 p.m. By doing this, he would be absent
- 19:57Speaker 2: from his work only one day, and he could schedule
- 20:00Speaker 2: his flight so as not to hit on the days
- 20:01Speaker 2: when he had an interview with his parole officer. Tuesday,
- 20:04Speaker 2: November 29th. A meeting was held in Chief Thad Brown's office.
- 20:08Speaker 2: It was decided to put a special stakeout on the
- 20:10Speaker 2: airport and wait for the suspect to come into town.
- 20:12Speaker 2: At that time, he'd be followed and taken into custody
- 20:15Speaker 2: as he prepared to commit another robbery. The names of
- 20:17Speaker 2: the three other men Jerry Evanson had given Frank as
- 20:20Speaker 2: having been involved in the holdups had been checked through
- 20:22Speaker 2: R & I. All three of them had arrest records.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Surveillances were placed on their homes and they were kept
- 20:26Speaker 2: under constant watch. Monday, December 12th, 11.15 p.m. Frank and
- 20:31Speaker 2: I relieved the stakeout at the airport.
- 20:33Speaker 5: There's a bench over there.
- 20:34Speaker 3: We can keep all the gates in view.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Wonder when he's going to hit again. I don't know.
- 20:43Speaker 3: The last couple of weeks have sure dragged by, haven't they?
- 20:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Anything on the other three guys?
- 20:48Speaker 2: Well, I talked to Pinky Meade this morning. He and
- 20:50Speaker 2: Lightner staked out at Lay's apartment. How are they doing? Nothing.
- 20:53Speaker 2: They're parking the car.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Down the street. From what they say, he's like a clock.
- 20:56Speaker 2: He comes in at 5 a.m., leaves at 9 p.m.
- 20:58Speaker 2: every day.
- 20:59Speaker 3: You got a cigarette?
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Here you go.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Joe.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Bishop.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Let's let him get outside. Yeah. I wonder if he's
- 21:14Speaker 3: got any luggage. I'll go bring it up outside.
- 21:17Speaker 2: We can wait for him there.
- 21:18Speaker 3: All right, come on. You see him?
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, there he is. Getting into that cab.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Come on.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Frank and I got in our car and.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Followed the cab taken by the suspect. We followed him
- 21:39Speaker 2: out of the airport grounds and then up La Brea Avenue.
- 21:41Speaker 2: The cab turned right on Washington Boulevard and headed for
- 21:43Speaker 2: downtown Los Angeles.
- 21:45Speaker 3: We pulled up to a stoplight. Still got him?
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah, he's still up ahead in front of that blue Mercury.
- 21:49Speaker 3: See him? Yeah. You got the number of the cab? Mm-hmm.
- 21:52Speaker 3: 2974- There's the light. All right, let's go.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Better try to pick it up a little, Frank. Cap's
- 22:04Speaker 2: pulling away from us. Yeah.
- 22:06Speaker 3: You think he's seen us? No. Can't you close in
- 22:10Speaker 3: a little?
- 22:10Speaker 2: Traffic's too heavy.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Can't use a siren.
- 22:12Speaker 2: We'll tip him.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Still see him?
- 22:16Speaker 3: Yeah. There's a break.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Guy had to make it a right turn.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Now we're right behind the cap. Yeah. I'll close in now.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Good.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Watch it, Frank. That guy pulling out of the alley.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Hold on. As we drove down the street after the
- 22:35Speaker 2: stoplight had changed, a car had failed to make a
- 22:37Speaker 2: boulevard stop coming out of an alley, and we'd hit
- 22:39Speaker 2: it broadside. The damage done to both cars was considerable,
- 22:43Speaker 2: and we'd lost our suspect. Frank got to a phone
- 22:45Speaker 2: and called the office. He gave them the number of
- 22:47Speaker 2: the cab that Bishop was in and asked for a
- 22:49Speaker 2: traffic investigation card. The office started a search for the
- 22:52Speaker 2: missing suspect. Lieutenant Jack Smyers told us to proceed to
- 22:55Speaker 2: the apartment of Tom Leahy to wait for further development.
- 22:58Speaker 2: In the meantime, a citywide broadcast went out carrying the
- 23:00Speaker 2: description of Bishop and the other three men.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Involved in the theft.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Frank and I arrived at the apartment and we relieved
- 23:06Speaker 2: Meade and Leitner. We had the manager of the place
- 23:08Speaker 2: let us into Leahy's room.
- 23:09Speaker 3: We waited. 1.30 a.m., 2.30, 4 o'clock, 5.30 a.m. Frank
- 23:11Speaker 3: and I had been on duty for over 21 hours.
- 23:18Speaker 2: At 5.45, the phone in the apartment rang once and
- 23:21Speaker 2: then it quit. That was the arranged signal between us
- 23:23Speaker 2: and the office. Frank put in a call. Lieutenant Smyers
- 23:26Speaker 2: told us that Officers Max Herman and Ed Benson were
- 23:28Speaker 2: on the way out to relieve us.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Fifteen minutes later, we heard somebody in the hall. Joe? Yeah,
- 23:33Speaker 3: probably Benson and Herman.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I'll get it.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Watch it, Joe. Look out, the gun's coming up for you.
- 23:41Speaker 5: You all right, Joe? Yeah, come on.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Sam? No. You want to take that side? Right. Watch it.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Behind the elevator shaft, Joe.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I see him.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Get away from me, cop.
- 24:04Speaker 2: You're in trouble, Bishop.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Don't build any more for yourself.
- 24:06Speaker 5: I got nothing to lose.
- 24:07Speaker 9: Been healthy again.
- 24:07Speaker 5: I'll be up at the joints for life.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Don't cost no more to kill you.
- 24:09Speaker 2: There's no way off this roof, Bishop.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Throw that gun out here and you follow it.
- 24:12Speaker 6: You're out of your mind, cop.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Give it up, Bishop.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Now, come on. Throw that gun out.
- 24:16Speaker 6: I'm going out, cop.
- 24:16Speaker 2: If you try to stop me, I'll blow your head off.
- 24:24Speaker 2: You all right, Joe? Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 3: How is he? I'd better call an ambulance.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Yeah. What's that fit out of his pocket?
- 24:29Speaker 5: Wait a minute.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Something he'll never use.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 24:34Speaker 2: Airplane ticket to Phoenix.
- 24:44Speaker 9: Albert Martin Kruger, Harold Nelson Bishop, Thomas Nagel Leahy, and
- 24:48Speaker 9: Charles Everett Lee were taken into custody and brought to
- 24:51Speaker 9: trial for two counts of robbery in the first degree.
- 24:54Speaker 9: They were convicted and received sentence as prescribed by law.
- 24:57Speaker 9: Robbery in the first degree is punishable by imprisonment in
- 25:00Speaker 9: the state penitentiary for a period of not less than
- 25:03Speaker 9: five years. Because of his previous record, Thomas Nagel Leahy
- 25:07Speaker 9: was given the maximum sentence and is now serving life
- 25:10Speaker 9: imprisonment in the state penitentiary, Folsom, California.
