- 0:00Speaker 1: Now joining me on the line right now is the
- 0:02Speaker 1: member for Nemajira, Bill Yan.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Bill. Let me try that again.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Good morning to you, Bill.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Good morning Katie, and good morning to your listeners up
- 0:13Speaker 3: there in Darwin.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Now, Bill, I know that earlier in the week we
- 0:16Speaker 1: obviously spoke to Fawn, the mother of a fifteen year
- 0:19Speaker 1: old boy who was attacked by a group of youths
- 0:22Speaker 1: with a machete in Alice Springs actually sorry, an axe
- 0:25Speaker 1: in Alice Springs while going for.
- 0:27Speaker 2: His afternoon walk.
- 0:29Speaker 1: There has been quite a development for Fonn who's been
- 0:32Speaker 1: off of work in Darwin, which is going to allow
- 0:35Speaker 1: her to relocate.
- 0:36Speaker 3: This is good news, sure is like Fon and his
- 0:41Speaker 3: son have been on edge ever since that first attack
- 0:44Speaker 3: Monday week ago, and then of course the second one
- 0:46Speaker 3: where the kids came to his school on that Friday
- 0:49Speaker 3: afternoon and tried to get to him again. So yeah,
- 0:53Speaker 3: Fon's son has said he's been doing it really tough.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And of course you imagined as a mum, you want
- 0:58Speaker 3: to make sure you put your kids. So we spoke
- 1:00Speaker 3: to Health and After about getting her transfer to Darwin
- 1:04Speaker 3: so she can start again. So live somewhere at least
- 1:09Speaker 3: you feel safe and the young fellow feels safe and
- 1:11Speaker 3: health have come to the party, and you've offered her
- 1:14Speaker 3: a transfer up to Darwin now, which is absolutely great
- 1:17Speaker 3: news for Fun and her son.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Oh thank goodness.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I mean it was pretty heartbreaking stuff to hear from
- 1:23Speaker 1: Fawn earlier in the week and hear what her young
- 1:25Speaker 1: fella had been through. And I think that anybody who
- 1:28Speaker 1: has seen that vision that's been doing the rounds on
- 1:31Speaker 1: social media that shows what had allegedly gone on, it
- 1:36Speaker 1: was horrifying stuff.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it certainly was scary. Ok, absolutely a horrific,
- 1:43Speaker 3: horrific attack. And I can't begin I don't think anybody
- 1:47Speaker 3: could begin to know how that Eckner and her son
- 1:50Speaker 3: actually felt so usual. Now, of course for the finders,
- 1:54Speaker 3: she's got to get herself for darl of course, single
- 1:57Speaker 3: mom with a teenage boy. Now, she's got to realize
- 2:00Speaker 3: CADO life from Alice up to Darwin, and sadly that
- 2:04Speaker 3: does become cheap. So I've just been talking to her
- 2:06Speaker 3: this morning and she's now trying to figure out financially
- 2:11Speaker 3: how she's going to be able to do that. So
- 2:13Speaker 3: she's got to lift a life up out of here
- 2:16Speaker 3: and move sixteen hundred k's north and got to find
- 2:19Speaker 3: someone to live in new school for a son, and
- 2:23Speaker 3: none of it, certainly it's certainly made to change, and.
- 2:25Speaker 1: None of it through any fault of her own. You know,
- 2:27Speaker 1: all that we try and do as parents is try
- 2:30Speaker 1: our best to keep our children safe. And you know
- 2:33Speaker 1: what her sons had to endure has been absolutely horrendous.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So essentially she is She told us she's looking for
- 2:40Speaker 1: a removalist.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Do you know if she's going to need any other
- 2:44Speaker 2: help with the move?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Well, I'm not sure case of course it's going to
- 2:50Speaker 3: come at a cost. For removal us is number one.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Finding somewhere to live up there is certainly going to
- 2:56Speaker 3: be number two. She's got a short term option, of
- 2:59Speaker 3: course with a friend, but of course that's not going
- 3:01Speaker 3: to be a long term option for her, So she's
- 3:04Speaker 3: going to need someone to live of course, a school.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I said, for remember that should be pretty straightforward. But
- 3:11Speaker 3: it comes down to that that cost of picking up
- 3:14Speaker 3: your life, as anyone that's move needs, you're going to
- 3:17Speaker 3: pick your life up from one place. And she's been
- 3:19Speaker 3: here what for over eight or nine years? I think,
- 3:23Speaker 3: so you accumulate a bit, yeah you do, and move
- 3:26Speaker 3: it north to Darwin and maybe in the persons may
- 3:29Speaker 3: have to store some stuff. So yeah, yeah, she's going
- 3:32Speaker 3: to she's she's even talking today about maybe have to
- 3:35Speaker 3: go and try and get a loan to help get
- 3:38Speaker 3: the money to be able to move. So that sucks,
- 3:42Speaker 3: and that's and it's really sad that what has happened
- 3:45Speaker 3: in our town has forced her into this position and
- 3:47Speaker 3: now is not only has it sort of turned her
- 3:50Speaker 3: life upside there because els was a home, but now
- 3:52Speaker 3: it's going to cost her a lot of money to
- 3:54Speaker 3: provide that safe environment.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well, Bill, we've got a lot of very generous people
- 3:59Speaker 1: that listen to this show. So if there is anybody
- 4:02Speaker 1: out there listening that does think that they may be
- 4:04Speaker 1: able to help Fond in some way, please feel free
- 4:08Speaker 1: to give us a call eight nine four one one
- 4:11Speaker 1: four nine. You can also get in contact on the
- 4:13Speaker 1: text line if you'd like, bell can I ask We
- 4:18Speaker 1: just literally got off the phone to the mayor of
- 4:20Speaker 1: Mount iSER before chatting with you this morning. Now, she
- 4:25Speaker 1: told us that they're in a situation now that since
- 4:27Speaker 1: January this year, they've had more than five hundred people
- 4:31Speaker 1: come across the border from the Northern Territory to mounta
- 4:35Speaker 1: iSER to access alcohol.
- 4:37Speaker 2: She reckons that they're up to five hundred.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And sixty nine, and that as those service providers on
- 4:43Speaker 1: the ground speaking to the people that are sleeping rough
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the Leichhardt River and staying in the Leichardt River
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you know, enjoying a drink, that they are saying
- 4:52Speaker 1: that they're they're from the NT.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It's a pretty.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Bad situation, isn't it when you you know, like we're
- 4:59Speaker 1: obviously I was screaming out, and now it seems like
- 5:01Speaker 1: poor old maun ISAs you know, coppying some of the brunt.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Those numbers are pretty staggering, Ky. That's I knew that
- 5:10Speaker 3: there'd been a number of people have left Alice Springs
- 5:12Speaker 3: when the restrictions first came in, but I didn't know
- 5:16Speaker 3: that high. But well, things are certainly better than all springs,
- 5:20Speaker 3: I said, Oh, I put my hand up and say
- 5:22Speaker 3: things are definitely better here with the restrictions. But so
- 5:26Speaker 3: those chronic drinkers were the ones that there really after
- 5:29Speaker 3: that access to alcohol now moving across the Queensland, it's
- 5:32Speaker 3: now become man, was the problem. I certainly feel for
- 5:36Speaker 3: the people of man Eyes and for the mayor over there. Certainly,
- 5:39Speaker 3: I don't think intention from us here and Alis that's right,
- 5:43Speaker 3: the problem somewhere else.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And she was very complimentary, you know, very complimentary
- 5:48Speaker 1: of the mayor as well of Alice Springs and said that,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, she admires the fact that he stood up
- 5:52Speaker 1: and what he's done. And I know that she's going
- 5:55Speaker 1: to be writing to her state government but also to
- 5:58Speaker 1: the you know, to the federal government to sort of
- 6:00Speaker 1: say there needs to be a bit of a national
- 6:02Speaker 1: approach here to some of these issues, particularly in regional towns.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, we've always had people going from Northern Territory
- 6:11Speaker 3: and around Central Australia across them out Eyes to get
- 6:14Speaker 3: access to alcohol and bring them back. I think a
- 6:16Speaker 3: lot of the groad runners go to Eyes and pick
- 6:19Speaker 3: stuff up from here and bring it back. Also a
- 6:21Speaker 3: lot of people I know we've moved up to Darwin
- 6:24Speaker 3: through Tannet Creek and Catherine and I've been told that
- 6:27Speaker 3: there's a number of people I've gone south and even
- 6:31Speaker 3: people of Kuba Pedia refuse and service to people from
- 6:35Speaker 3: Central Australia to take away alcohol there. So it is
- 6:41Speaker 3: a bigger picture, Katie, certainly is. And when you've got
- 6:45Speaker 3: problem drinkers and people are adicted to alcohol, they'll do
- 6:47Speaker 3: anything to get access. So I think you're right. It's
- 6:51Speaker 3: probably more of a I suppose a national issue. Now
- 6:56Speaker 3: we're doing a little bit better here in Central Australia.
- 7:00Speaker 3: It was really long way to go.
- 7:01Speaker 1: It is good to hear that, you know, hopefully things
- 7:04Speaker 1: start to calm down a little bit in Central Australia.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Goodness knows you need it. Bill.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Just a quick one on a separate topic. I know
- 7:12Speaker 1: that you'd raise concerns about access to some popular fishing
- 7:15Speaker 1: spots on the show last year. Is there any updates
- 7:17Speaker 1: on Shady Camp? And we were hearing about gates band locks?
- 7:21Speaker 1: Have you heard much?
- 7:23Speaker 3: Oh? Now those gates, Katie, I said, I've done some investigations. Yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 3: about back, because I've heard the same thing too. What
- 7:29Speaker 3: there is is some gates on the Point Stuart Road
- 7:34Speaker 3: in there around the entrance to one of the stations.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And that's because they closed that Point Stuart Road down
- 7:41Speaker 3: during the wet so no one can go down wreck
- 7:43Speaker 3: the road but also get stuck down there. So those
- 7:46Speaker 3: gates went in recently to keep that area off limits
- 7:50Speaker 3: during the wet Hopefully they'll be reopening as soon as
- 7:53Speaker 3: they can because with the upgrade that road, it means
- 7:56Speaker 3: they're going to be able to open up road earlier.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Shady Camp. Well, Shady Camp is still open, and the
- 8:01Speaker 3: government came out and along with NLC and said the
- 8:05Speaker 3: new permit system is in place. I think you've got
- 8:08Speaker 3: to register to give into some of those areas. But
- 8:11Speaker 3: I have anecdotally heard that the Shady Camp area under
- 8:16Speaker 3: that the beds and banks and some of those land
- 8:20Speaker 3: claims that may be hands over by the end of
- 8:23Speaker 3: this year as part of one of those settlements. So
- 8:27Speaker 3: I had to wait here waiting here further about that.
- 8:29Speaker 3: But that's, of course, that's a federal thing. Through the
- 8:32Speaker 3: Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Linda Bernie, she gets final say
- 8:36Speaker 3: on what happens there.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So we'll wait to hear about that.
- 8:39Speaker 1: One.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Catch up with Dave Tavello and all the players in
- 8:43Speaker 3: that space, just to find out what's going on and
- 8:46Speaker 3: have listened to what they think.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Hey, Belle, while we were talking, I did
- 8:51Speaker 1: get a message from someone in the rural area saying
- 8:55Speaker 1: that she's going to donate five hundred dollars to form
- 8:59Speaker 1: to help her move.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So that's a lovely star. Yeah, that is a lovely start.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So we'll make note of that and we'll get in
- 9:07Speaker 1: contact with you and let you know who it is
- 9:09Speaker 1: and how we can make that happen.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Oh thanks Cartie, and look, thanks everybody happing down for
- 9:14Speaker 3: helping on there, because yeah, single mom put it in
- 9:17Speaker 3: a horrible position and really needs to help. So yeah,
- 9:22Speaker 3: goes out with people with Darla.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thanks so much, Bill for your time this morning.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Mate. We'll catch up with you again very soon.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Cheers Katie, and thank you to your listeners, and thanks
- 9:33Speaker 3: everybody happing down.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Thank you.
