- 0:32what is going on everybody
- 0:33welcome to lunch with the
- 0:34Clydesdale we are cooking
- 0:35it up Cajun because it's
- 0:37Wednesday and we missed
- 0:39last week and I need a
- 0:40little something spicy this
- 0:41week so how y'all are
- 0:44what's happening um never
- 0:48did I think this morning
- 0:49when I woke up and got out
- 0:50of bed that I would be
- 0:51having a conversation about
- 0:53Mary Steenburgen that would
- 0:55delay the start of this broadcast
- 1:01And yet, here we are.
- 1:03And here we are.
- 1:06I mean, dude, like I said,
- 1:07she's been everybody's mom
- 1:10on camera a whole lot.
- 1:11I just looked it up.
- 1:12She's seventy two.
- 1:13She looks good for being
- 1:14seventy two years old.
- 1:15Like.
- 1:17Yeah, I am.
- 1:19one of my, like when I'm not in the cross,
- 1:22when I'm trying to escape
- 1:22from the CrossFit news,
- 1:24like one of the podcasts I
- 1:26listened to is Ted Danson
- 1:27has one called where
- 1:28everybody knows your name.
- 1:30And he basically just has
- 1:31friends of his on and she is his wife.
- 1:35And so she does appear on
- 1:36that a handful of times, but it's,
- 1:40I really love that podcast.
- 1:41And yeah, not how we got on,
- 1:45not how we got on the subject.
- 1:48No, not at all.
- 1:50But I mean, we came full circle.
- 1:55We came full circle.
- 1:56So you were on a boat.
- 1:58I was on the Norwegian Encore,
- 2:01as a matter of fact.
- 2:02Sailed out of Seattle, up to Anchorage,
- 2:06Alaska,
- 2:07on to... Where was the second stop?
- 2:10Uh...
- 2:12Third one was in Ketchikan.
- 2:13The second one was in a
- 2:15place that doesn't sound
- 2:16like a real name.
- 2:16It'll come to me in a minute.
- 2:18And then one stop in Victoria,
- 2:21British Columbia,
- 2:21and then back to Seattle.
- 2:23Seven days.
- 2:25Seven days.
- 2:26God, it's dogged.
- 2:27What was the name of that
- 2:28second place that we stopped at?
- 2:30It doesn't sound like a real name.
- 2:31It sounds like somebody made up.
- 2:32I'm sure it's some sort of Alaskan.
- 2:34What's that?
- 2:36Juno?
- 2:38No, not Juno.
- 2:38The second one.
- 2:39You know Juno was named after a person?
- 2:43Uh, no, it was some,
- 2:44it's somebody's last name.
- 2:45The reason why I know that
- 2:46is because I was telling
- 2:48him my father-in-law picked
- 2:49us up from the airport
- 2:51Monday and he was asking us about it.
- 2:54I mean, obviously I said, uh,
- 2:57let me tell you something.
- 2:58I said, all of the,
- 3:00like every tour guide that
- 3:01we had for like excursions and whatnot,
- 3:04like the people that we
- 3:05talked to going here, there and yonder,
- 3:07uh,
- 3:08They were all either
- 3:09extremely knowledgeable and
- 3:10very good at their jobs,
- 3:12or they made it up as they
- 3:14went along so well that you
- 3:15couldn't tell the difference,
- 3:15one or the two.
- 3:16But one of the things we
- 3:18found out was that Juno was named after a,
- 3:21if I remember right,
- 3:22it was a gold prospector
- 3:23whose last name was Juno.
- 3:26And he was so bad at his job
- 3:28that he ended up being one
- 3:30of the people that helped
- 3:31to form the town, in a nutshell.
- 3:36which was bananas crazy to
- 3:38me when we found that out.
- 3:40Gosh, dog, it is driving me nuts, Scott.
- 3:44I'm going to catch a can.
- 3:46Take a week's vacation, man,
- 3:47and your brain just shuts off.
- 3:50Oh, absolutely.
- 3:51To the point where, like,
- 3:53so when we did get service,
- 3:54when I was able to get
- 3:55service on my phone, I mean,
- 3:56now and again,
- 3:56we get text messages from friends of ours,
- 3:58right?
- 3:58And I'm a coach at my gym.
- 4:03One of my best friends is
- 4:03also a coach at a gym.
- 4:05His wife texted our little
- 4:07group that we have and was like,
- 4:08I need the code to get in
- 4:10the door to the gym.
- 4:11Nobody's here and I'm about
- 4:12to pee my pants.
- 4:14By the time I saw it,
- 4:17it dawned on me that it
- 4:19would not come immediately to mind.
- 4:21We got a keypad to get in
- 4:23the gym and I went,
- 4:26even if I had saw this in time,
- 4:29I don't know what it is right now.
- 4:34It just – I was in the
- 4:35fitness center on the boat,
- 4:36and like the – it just – it
- 4:40wouldn't come to mind at all whatsoever.
- 4:42Just like the name of this
- 4:43town I'm trying to think of
- 4:44that we stopped in.
- 4:45What I find with like key
- 4:46codes and stuff like that
- 4:47is I almost – it's almost
- 4:50like muscle memory.
- 4:52My thumb knows the code, but my brain –
- 4:56may not know the code does
- 4:57that make sense hundred
- 4:59hundred percent yeah that's
- 5:01why I she ended up getting
- 5:02it um but it I thought the
- 5:05same thing I was like if I
- 5:06was standing in front of
- 5:06the door I could do it but
- 5:09like I am however many
- 5:11thousands of miles away and
- 5:12I have absolutely no idea
- 5:14like it's drawing a blank completely
- 5:17Yeah,
- 5:17we have like an eight-digit state ID
- 5:20when I log into work,
- 5:22and that's my username for everything,
- 5:25right?
- 5:26I've had it for twenty-two years.
- 5:30Like, literally,
- 5:30I just go to like the nine
- 5:32pad and just
- 5:33tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick.
- 5:35Like, there's no even thought.
- 5:38The brain doesn't even tell
- 5:39my fingers what it is.
- 5:40My fingers already know.
- 5:41It's not.
- 5:42Your brain's not even
- 5:43involved at that point.
- 5:44Yeah.
- 5:46Yeah,
- 5:46as far as conscious thought is concerned.
- 5:48No.
- 5:51Alaska is absolutely incredible.
- 5:55I can't think of a better way to put it,
- 5:56at least the parts that we saw,
- 5:57which wasn't a whole lot of
- 5:58it because the place is so
- 6:00they always talk about the
- 6:01fact that like landmass wise,
- 6:03it's the biggest state in the union,
- 6:05right?
- 6:06So we were going to bingo
- 6:09one day on the boat and we
- 6:11got there early to get our
- 6:12cards and whatnot.
- 6:14Wow.
- 6:14And they were having a presentation.
- 6:15Party time.
- 6:16Party time on the cruise.
- 6:17My wife is a bingo freak, dude.
- 6:21They played twice.
- 6:22We went twice.
- 6:24Boy, I played at least twice.
- 6:25They played three times.
- 6:25Did you get crazy and go dauber?
- 6:27Like ink dauber?
- 6:29No, there's no dauber on the boat.
- 6:31Oh, no.
- 6:31It's actually,
- 6:33so they give you the card
- 6:34with all the numbers on it.
- 6:36And you got to punch it in
- 6:37and like fold it down.
- 6:38But don't tear it off.
- 6:39Because if you do it, boy, it's cold.
- 6:42I know this because he told
- 6:43us seventeen different times.
- 6:49Anyway,
- 6:51they were having a presentation on
- 6:52Alaska.
- 6:53Dude, just if it has the tweet.
- 6:54I know, dude.
- 6:55It just threw me off completely.
- 6:59They had a presentation on
- 7:00Alaska beforehand, right?
- 7:02And one of the things the
- 7:03dude said was like,
- 7:04everybody knows it's the biggest state,
- 7:06but to give you an idea of how big it is,
- 7:11they put it over the US map
- 7:13and it took up a third of the state.
- 7:18Excuse me, of the country.
- 7:20It was absolutely insane.
- 7:22We didn't see...
- 7:23I mean, we saw three towns.
- 7:24And actually,
- 7:25we didn't even get off in
- 7:26Ketchikan because we
- 7:30weren't going to be there real long.
- 7:31It was a twenty minute car
- 7:32ride into town from where
- 7:34we had to dock at.
- 7:35And then it was going to be
- 7:36like an hour boat ride back.
- 7:38Got there early in the
- 7:38morning and we had a balcony room.
- 7:41And literally, I saw it,
- 7:45looking out the window,
- 7:46seeing this coming into port.
- 7:47Okay,
- 7:47we're docking because I was already up.
- 7:49And you look out the window
- 7:50and it was raining sideways.
- 7:54And it was forty-five degrees.
- 7:56And Jennifer was like, absolutely not.
- 7:59And then the people that
- 8:00were on the boat that we
- 8:01knew that actually went into town,
- 8:05came back and said,
- 8:06y'all made the right call.
- 8:08It was absolutely miserable.
- 8:11But other than that, dude, like,
- 8:14it's flat where I live, right?
- 8:16It's there's,
- 8:18so like anytime I get to see mountains,
- 8:20especially mountains with
- 8:21snow on top of them and whatnot,
- 8:23it's something for me,
- 8:25but it's unspoiled.
- 8:28It's got, like,
- 8:28I can't think of a better way to put it.
- 8:30Like there's not stuff everywhere, right?
- 8:33It is just mountains and
- 8:35ocean or mountains with
- 8:36trees on them and snow, glaciers,
- 8:40glaciers were absolutely incredible.
- 8:41I mean, the whole thing was,
- 8:45I would like to go back not on a boat,
- 8:48like maybe fly into Juneau
- 8:49because you cannot drive
- 8:50into Juneau and stay and do
- 8:54a lot more hiking and stuff like that.
- 8:56The world's second largest
- 8:58rainforest is in Alaska.
- 9:00Did you know that?
- 9:01I did not.
- 9:01Because I didn't.
- 9:03Yes, sir.
- 9:04I'm learning all about
- 9:05Alaska history today.
- 9:06Well, I mean, you can be asked.
- 9:11um but yeah it was uh it was
- 9:14awesome glacier bay see a
- 9:16bunch of glaciers really
- 9:18the boat just goes in for a
- 9:19couple hours and does a
- 9:21bunch of turning and
- 9:22whatnot so everybody on the
- 9:22boat gets an opportunity to
- 9:23see uh was I mean it was
- 9:27wild it really really was I
- 9:30don't see like that it's
- 9:31got I mean it gets cold at
- 9:33my house for like three
- 9:33days out of the year
- 9:36So, I mean,
- 9:37just be around a place where
- 9:38you can see all the snow and everything.
- 9:39We did the train ride up
- 9:43into the mountains and then
- 9:44back like three thousand feet up.
- 9:47And so I saw some of the
- 9:48guys at the gym when I was coaching.
- 9:49You got to ride the pool or express?
- 9:53Yeah, just pretty close.
- 9:54I mean, we had snacks.
- 9:58We had snacks and we drove
- 9:59through some pretty frozen country.
- 10:03But.
- 10:05looking at it,
- 10:05being on it and really
- 10:08thinking about like the
- 10:09engineering that it took to
- 10:12blast chunks of this
- 10:14mountain out without
- 10:15bringing the mountain down
- 10:17on top of your head, by the way,
- 10:20and then laying the track
- 10:21and getting everything going there.
- 10:24Just that in and of itself,
- 10:26like the stuff that mankind has done is,
- 10:29it's my, it truly is mind blowing.
- 10:32And I was back in the, you know,
- 10:35early nineteen hundreds,
- 10:36whatever it was in Gold Rush time,
- 10:38because before that, where the train was,
- 10:40it was just a path that
- 10:42people use going up the mountain.
- 10:45And I was telling Jennifer, I was like,
- 10:46the first people that came
- 10:47up here had absolutely no
- 10:51idea where they were going.
- 10:53They just trusted in the
- 10:54fact that this looks like a path.
- 10:56We should go this way.
- 10:58And it's at the top of Scott,
- 11:00there was that the blue ice,
- 11:02the blue light glacier ice
- 11:04that it's so frozen and so
- 11:06dense that the only light
- 11:07that shines through it is
- 11:08blue was on the top of that
- 11:10mountain in a frozen lake
- 11:12right on the side of us.
- 11:15It's cold.
- 11:18It's cold.
- 11:19We did this in the end of May,
- 11:20the beginning of June,
- 11:21it was nine degrees at home.
- 11:24It was not nine degrees on
- 11:25top of the mountain.
- 11:26So the fact that people did
- 11:28it with pack mules and
- 11:29basically just walking up there.
- 11:33They were tougher.
- 11:34They were tougher than us back then.
- 11:35Oh, God, yes.
- 11:36Not even close.
- 11:38T-Bird says,
- 11:38come to Canada to the Rocky
- 11:40Mountain in Alberta.
- 11:41It would be cheap for you
- 11:42with the American dollar
- 11:43being so much better than ours.
- 11:46I've heard this beautiful there.
- 11:47And it's actually pretty
- 11:49much like straight up from
- 11:50where my daughter is now.
- 11:51Right.
- 11:52Like from Montana up, it's.
- 11:55So, yeah,
- 11:57that'd be something that's really cool.
- 12:00Yeah,
- 12:00and so I can now say I've been to Canada,
- 12:03albeit for an hour and a half or so,
- 12:06when we got off the boat in Victoria,
- 12:11got off, walked up to Fisherman's Wharf,
- 12:15hung out over there for a little bit,
- 12:16like saw what they had to see right there,
- 12:19walked a little bit further in every town,
- 12:20came back because that was
- 12:22our second to last date and we were done.
- 12:26I love going places, but I hate traveling.
- 12:30Does that make sense?
- 12:34The getting to there is what sucks.
- 12:37Usually the getting to there
- 12:40I can even tolerate because
- 12:41there's the excitement of getting there.
- 12:43The getting from there is like the worst.
- 12:47so monday my monday travel
- 12:49day wasn't wasn't bad
- 12:50coming home um we got to
- 12:52the airport saturday to fly
- 12:54up there and we were
- 12:56supposed to leave at noon
- 12:59and arrive in seattle by
- 13:01like six six thirty and
- 13:02when we got to the airport
- 13:06no it was not jeff it was
- 13:10not the few canadians that
- 13:12we interacted with seemed
- 13:13pretty nice how about that
- 13:15they seem they seem friendly enough
- 13:18But yeah, Saturday on the way going,
- 13:21as soon as we got to the airport,
- 13:22the guy that was checking
- 13:24our bags was like,
- 13:25your plane is already
- 13:26thirty five or forty minutes late,
- 13:28something like that.
- 13:29He said it might only leave
- 13:31you twenty minutes to make
- 13:32your connecting flight.
- 13:35Y'all will probably be
- 13:36better off getting on if I
- 13:37put you on a different flight.
- 13:39The problem is that the
- 13:40different flight had a two
- 13:41and a half hourly over in Phoenix.
- 13:44So we ended up getting to Seattle.
- 13:47I think that's how we got to
- 13:48the airport or got to the hotel.
- 13:49Rather, it was nine thirty,
- 13:52ten o'clock that night.
- 13:54And we were done by that point.
- 13:55Like we flew from New Orleans to Phoenix,
- 13:59stayed in Phoenix until we had to leave,
- 14:02flew from there to Oakland,
- 14:04sat on the runway in Oakland,
- 14:06like don't get off the
- 14:07plane type stuff because
- 14:08this plane is going on to Seattle.
- 14:11So that was another hour and
- 14:11a half just literally
- 14:13chilling inside the airplane in Seattle,
- 14:16in Oakland before we flew on to Seattle.
- 14:20I don't recommend that.
- 14:21I don't.
- 14:24it's more than one layover
- 14:25like I'm I'm out here's a
- 14:27couple hundred extra bucks
- 14:28I'll just yeah we have a
- 14:31whole lot of options at
- 14:32that point so that was the
- 14:34best one um that that we
- 14:35could possibly do and the
- 14:36dude shout out to you that
- 14:38that did it I got it done
- 14:40for us because he just told
- 14:43us and it was like
- 14:45this is probably a better
- 14:46option in terms of literally told him,
- 14:48Hey man, you're the expert.
- 14:49Like if you say this is going to work,
- 14:51then that's fine.
- 14:52When they get into town late, it's like,
- 14:54it doesn't matter.
- 14:54We're not actually leaving
- 14:55until tomorrow anyway.
- 14:57So, so we ended up doing.
- 15:01Well, I'm glad you had a good time,
- 15:02brother, but we,
- 15:04we have to keep this pretty
- 15:05short today because I do
- 15:07have one o'clock meeting.
- 15:08Um,
- 15:10I have to ask you as a CrossFit addict,
- 15:12when it comes to podcasts,
- 15:14you watch all of them.
- 15:16You're also,
- 15:17you don't have the
- 15:18self-service you normally have.
- 15:21How long,
- 15:22how many days did it take you to
- 15:23stop shaking?
- 15:27Believe it or not, I was good, dude.
- 15:31It's actually, and you forget about it,
- 15:34but like once you don't
- 15:35have service for a little
- 15:37while and you just kind of,
- 15:39focused on being present in the moment,
- 15:40it's way better than what we normally do.
- 15:44Like,
- 15:48obviously we didn't get to do our
- 15:49show Wednesday.
- 15:51That kind of sucked.
- 15:52But beyond that,
- 15:53I was just usually mostly
- 15:55taking my picture,
- 15:56using my phone to take
- 15:57pictures while we were
- 16:00wherever we were and to as
- 16:02a timer and for a music
- 16:04player for when I went and
- 16:05worked out in the fitness center.
- 16:08Other than that, it was a time piece.
- 16:11I've gotten to where I have
- 16:12a couple times a day where
- 16:14I take an hour break from my phone.
- 16:17I put it away and I don't do
- 16:18anything with it for a couple hours.
- 16:23Unless it's like a big weekend,
- 16:24I need to know what's going
- 16:26on for something.
- 16:27But generally,
- 16:28and one of those times is
- 16:30like dinner time,
- 16:31the hour around dinner time.
- 16:33Phone goes away.
- 16:34I'm present with my wife.
- 16:36We talk about what's going
- 16:37on and things like that.
- 16:38And it is a whole lot better.
- 16:39But I want to talk a little
- 16:42bit about the weekend.
- 16:43We've talked about it a lot
- 16:44with the Sunday show and
- 16:46yesterday when I got back.
- 16:49But one thing I didn't
- 16:49really get to talk about
- 16:50was the whole Brookwell situation.
- 16:54And there's been a little
- 16:55bit of kind of fun updates to it,
- 16:57I guess.
- 16:58Fun in my opinion, not like...
- 17:01Woo-hoo-wee-hee is fun, but like,
- 17:03you know.
- 17:03Right.
- 17:05Not roller coaster fun.
- 17:06So I was watching Boys Interrupted,
- 17:08and they had Dave Castro on.
- 17:11And in that conversation,
- 17:12it came out that when they
- 17:15gave Brooke the penalty,
- 17:17she indicated that she was
- 17:19done competing to Dave and crew.
- 17:25Now, she had just heard this news.
- 17:28was getting penalized she
- 17:29was not going to make get
- 17:30her ticket to the games
- 17:31through the um in affiliate
- 17:33semi-final but dave made it
- 17:35clear that she kind of came
- 17:37back with well I'm never
- 17:38competing again then but
- 17:42she showed up at syndicate
- 17:43so apparently that was just
- 17:47an emotional response to
- 17:49right and we all you know
- 17:51when something gets hit we
- 17:52get hit with something hard
- 17:53we all say stupid stuff right
- 17:56So I just found that to be funny,
- 17:58and I found it odd that
- 18:01Dave would share that.
- 18:03Right.
- 18:08I don't know.
- 18:11And Lito says, was that a threat?
- 18:14Like her saying that,
- 18:16were they going to change
- 18:17their mind and reinstate the reps?
- 18:19Yeah.
- 18:21That's the kid.
- 18:22No, I'm not competing.
- 18:23You're not going to have me as an athlete.
- 18:25That's the kid playing
- 18:27basketball who doesn't get
- 18:29a foul that he wants or
- 18:30something like that in the playground.
- 18:31I'm taking my ball and I'm going home.
- 18:34Okay.
- 18:36We'll just get another ball.
- 18:40Again, I've said dumb things.
- 18:43A hundred percent.
- 18:44I'm with you on the fact
- 18:46that Castro just put that
- 18:48out there for everybody is kind of wild.
- 18:52I mean,
- 18:54He did say,
- 18:55I'm not a fan of these people
- 18:57as a person whatsoever.
- 18:59He's also said he is friends with Brooke.
- 19:03Yeah.
- 19:04I mean, that's obvious, dude.
- 19:05That's been going back since forever.
- 19:08I just think it... I'm taking my ball.
- 19:11I'm not sure I want my
- 19:12friend sharing that on a podcast,
- 19:16but it's a really fun podcast.
- 19:20Jason and Dallin dog on Castro hard.
- 19:25do not give him any breaks
- 19:28to his credit dude he eats
- 19:29that kind of up like the
- 19:31couple times he's been here
- 19:32lately he's been on savan
- 19:33where he went to savan's
- 19:34house and like he's doing a
- 19:36podcast at like savan light
- 19:39lights into him and he just
- 19:40sits there with a smile on
- 19:41his face and takes it or
- 19:43gives as good as he gets
- 19:44either way um so I kudos to
- 19:48him for that you know and
- 19:49not being feeling some kind
- 19:51of way about it like awesome
- 19:54his uh his weekend review
- 19:57this week when he was
- 19:58talking about uh when he
- 19:59started about being on
- 20:00there and like hopper I
- 20:03think he said by the first
- 20:04time he met hopper and
- 20:05hopper was saying call me
- 20:06flopper to my face and he
- 20:08was like I don't even know
- 20:09who you are because the one
- 20:13who was in the chat is cave
- 20:14dastro and hopper thought
- 20:16it was dave castro yeah
- 20:19so but it's a good one but
- 20:21on to back onto Brooke
- 20:22Wells real quick before we
- 20:23move on um you know the big
- 20:26story of the weekend was
- 20:27she refused the interview
- 20:29uh with Taylor on the floor
- 20:32my first reaction to that
- 20:33was I'm surprised they were surprised
- 20:42You had to go into it.
- 20:44If you were realistic at all,
- 20:45you had to go into it knowing that.
- 20:48And, and,
- 20:49and maybe it's my background that
- 20:50tells me I've asked Brooke
- 20:52Wells for interviews after events,
- 20:55countless times.
- 20:57She has told me no every time.
- 20:59And I have never been,
- 21:02I've never dogged her
- 21:03publicly on anything like
- 21:05her burpee standard or whatever.
- 21:08Right.
- 21:10I always chalked it up as
- 21:12she has one point eight
- 21:13million followers on Instagram.
- 21:15I'm a little peon.
- 21:17She doesn't need me.
- 21:19And so she doesn't want to
- 21:20waste her time giving me sixty seconds.
- 21:23Yeah.
- 21:25But I've been I've gotten
- 21:26the no thank you a ton of times.
- 21:29And there's really only two
- 21:29athletes that have done that to me.
- 21:32So like.
- 21:34One,
- 21:34I wasn't shocked she did it because
- 21:36she's done it to me a million times.
- 21:39she has like one or two
- 21:40people that she was willing
- 21:41to talk to after events.
- 21:44Cause she knows that they're it's safe.
- 21:47And she knows that they have
- 21:49a big enough following
- 21:50where it's going to matter for her.
- 21:53And so there's that.
- 22:00So, um, so yeah, I just,
- 22:04I was surprised they were surprised, um,
- 22:08I would say in the moment,
- 22:10I would say in the moment,
- 22:14I don't know if it was
- 22:16necessarily a surprise to me, like, oh,
- 22:19she didn't want to talk.
- 22:20Okay, well,
- 22:21and probably not knowing what
- 22:22to do with it,
- 22:23because they did say if
- 22:24somebody didn't want to talk,
- 22:25that that was fine.
- 22:27That's their prerogative,
- 22:28and everybody's right is not to.
- 22:30But I think right there in the moment,
- 22:32especially after,
- 22:33I don't see she's on her redemption arc,
- 22:35but she didn't make
- 22:38The other thing that she was in,
- 22:39and now she's winning.
- 22:40She's kicking everybody's ass and whatnot.
- 22:43And it probably would be a
- 22:44little shocking for me at that point.
- 22:46I don't give a damn who's
- 22:47doing the interviewing that
- 22:48she wasn't wanting to talk
- 22:49and maybe come up and be like, yeah,
- 22:51I am winning because I am that good.
- 22:54Because if you go listen to
- 22:55some of the stuff they talked about,
- 22:56it's like everybody knows
- 22:58that she can do and that she is fit.
- 23:02And so like, hey,
- 23:03you're actually showing it now.
- 23:05Why wouldn't you want to come up there?
- 23:07That's how I would look at it.
- 23:08Why wouldn't you want to
- 23:09come up here and be like, yeah,
- 23:10this is kind of what I do.
- 23:12I've been doing it for ten years now.
- 23:15And shut up the voices.
- 23:17So to be fair, on the stream,
- 23:18they didn't really talk
- 23:19about it live as it was happening.
- 23:22There was a brief thing where...
- 23:25john or bill asked why we
- 23:27didn't get brooke after the
- 23:29heat that she won and it
- 23:32was relayed back to them
- 23:33from taylor to somebody
- 23:34else that he asked and she
- 23:36said no thank you and that
- 23:38was pretty much it on the
- 23:39live broadcast it was the
- 23:41post um show after the
- 23:44broadcast more about
- 23:48talking about why she said
- 23:49no I didn't get to see any of that
- 23:57that's the type of person
- 23:58she is isn't it do you all
- 24:00think alex kazan would have
- 24:01refused the interview if
- 24:02the same thing had happened
- 24:03to her no no no uh
- 24:15Alex is a whole different person though.
- 24:16I feel like Alex Kazan is an
- 24:18old soul trapped in a
- 24:19twenty-three year old body.
- 24:22I really do believe that.
- 24:23Just judging,
- 24:24talking to her in interviews and whatnot,
- 24:26she's seen, I don't want to say wise,
- 24:27but mature beyond her years for sure.
- 24:31There are so many people
- 24:33that love to talk to anyone
- 24:37wanting to do an interview
- 24:39with them after an event.
- 24:41Like I said,
- 24:42there's really only been two
- 24:43that have refused me outright.
- 24:46And then a couple of times
- 24:47where like the transition
- 24:49time between this event and
- 24:50the next event was really
- 24:51fast and they needed to get
- 24:53back to do a cool down or whatever.
- 24:54And they explained that
- 24:57what's crazy is like when I do them,
- 24:59I minor less than sixty
- 25:00seconds unless the person
- 25:02I'm interviewing starts
- 25:04going into a story that's much longer.
- 25:06Right.
- 25:07but my goal is to be less
- 25:09than sixty seconds.
- 25:10Them explaining they need to
- 25:12cool down actually takes
- 25:13longer than it would have
- 25:14been to answer my one question.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:18Right.
- 25:20But regardless,
- 25:20everybody has been super
- 25:21cool that I've approached
- 25:23after events about talking
- 25:25about different things.
- 25:26I mean, Ariel Lowen,
- 25:29she'll just lean on the
- 25:32barrier and just sit there
- 25:34and talk to me for ten minutes.
- 25:37Like it's, it's insane,
- 25:39but legitimately just like this and just,
- 25:43yep.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:44I've seen that.
- 25:46And she'll do that when I'm
- 25:47not interviewing her like that.
- 25:49And other athletes do that too,
- 25:50where they just stop by and chat.
- 25:51So, you know,
- 25:57but I just wanted to say like,
- 26:00they're making a thing out
- 26:01of Brooke saying no.
- 26:02Brooke has said no before
- 26:04without people dogging her burpees.
- 26:08So I just wanted to kind of
- 26:09like make that clear too,
- 26:11that she is not an athlete
- 26:13that talks a lot to anybody
- 26:15after an event.
- 26:17Now, if it was, you know, back in the day,
- 26:20Nikki or Bella or any of
- 26:23those people that are hired
- 26:25by CrossFit interview.
- 26:27And she did talk to Bella.
- 26:29Yeah.
- 26:30But that's one of the old
- 26:32guard people that get hired
- 26:34to do that by CrossFit.
- 26:37She does those,
- 26:38but if you are back in the back,
- 26:40she doesn't stop and talk much.
- 26:43Knowing, not knowing, but seeing,
- 26:49realizing that Taylor's got
- 26:50the microphone of all
- 26:52people and he's sitting there going in,
- 26:55not knowing what he's asked
- 26:56or talked to other people
- 26:57about or not caring about
- 26:59that or whatnot.
- 27:00And being Brooke,
- 27:01I probably wouldn't want to
- 27:02talk to him either because
- 27:03let's be honest,
- 27:05one thing me and Taylor
- 27:06Self have in common is that
- 27:07we're not exactly sure what
- 27:08we're fixing to say next.
- 27:10Like what's fixing to come
- 27:11out of our mouths at any given point.
- 27:13So, yeah, that would make sense to me.
- 27:15Like, no,
- 27:15of course she doesn't want to
- 27:16talk to him.
- 27:17Why?
- 27:18At what point does that seem
- 27:19like a good idea?
- 27:20No,
- 27:20we're going to go ahead and move on and
- 27:22get on to the next thing.
- 27:23Oh, here's somebody I know.
- 27:25Here's Bella.
- 27:27She's safe.
- 27:27I know, I know what,
- 27:29or I didn't necessarily know,
- 27:31but I know probably what
- 27:32she's going to ask me or
- 27:33what she's going to say.
- 27:34I'm going to talk to her.
- 27:35Yeah.
- 27:40Um, so that's that.
- 27:42I just wanted to kind of point that out.
- 27:44A couple,
- 27:45one other thing I did want to point out,
- 27:46cause this kind of goes
- 27:47hand in hand is yesterday.
- 27:49I announced that I had found the real, uh,
- 27:54the real road to the games.
- 27:57And that is Andrew Hiller
- 27:58stuff that he's doing now.
- 28:02And I want to carefully say this.
- 28:09There's some thought that
- 28:11he's getting this with
- 28:12athletes that aren't tainted by agents,
- 28:19right?
- 28:20Yeah.
- 28:20You get just better flow, better stuff,
- 28:23whatever.
- 28:24It's not coming through a
- 28:25screen at that point.
- 28:27I think that's discrediting
- 28:29the work that Andrew has put in on these.
- 28:33Right.
- 28:34And I, and I wanted to,
- 28:35I wanted to put the reason
- 28:37these are so good.
- 28:39One,
- 28:40Andrew has built a relationship with
- 28:41these athletes where they
- 28:43feel comfortable in talking to him.
- 28:47That, that is key.
- 28:48Yeah.
- 28:49Two, two, he sees the stories.
- 28:54He's not there just to see
- 28:55what protein they use and
- 28:58what workout they're doing today.
- 29:00He wants to know the whys.
- 29:02He wants to know where, why, how.
- 29:09And then you get the stories, right?
- 29:11And that's what makes them
- 29:13deeper than what CrossFit
- 29:15is putting out now.
- 29:17And this is an example I used.
- 29:18I was talking to Andrew the other day.
- 29:21And Austin Hatfield wrote to the games.
- 29:24I didn't learn a thing new
- 29:26from him that I hadn't seen
- 29:29in a Hiller video or any
- 29:32other video about Austin.
- 29:37What I wanted to know more of,
- 29:38this relationship with his grandfather,
- 29:41that he comes down and eats
- 29:42breakfast with him every single day.
- 29:44Every day.
- 29:45Why does he do that?
- 29:46What has he learned from his grandfather?
- 29:49What are the things his
- 29:50grandfather has taught him
- 29:51that take him through the day?
- 29:55Does that make sense?
- 29:57Oh, yeah.
- 29:57No, absolutely it does.
- 29:59Absolutely it does.
- 30:00Dude,
- 30:00you can get their training content
- 30:02off of YouTube or Instagram
- 30:03or wherever they're posting
- 30:04to at any given point in time.
- 30:06That's not hard to do.
- 30:08And it's not super interesting.
- 30:10They're all doing thrusters
- 30:11and burpees and double
- 30:12unders and muscle ups,
- 30:13every single one of them.
- 30:15I'm with you.
- 30:16Like, give me an actual story.
- 30:17And that's what Andrew is really,
- 30:18really good at.
- 30:19Right.
- 30:21Going in and seeing hip and
- 30:22steals rings in his living
- 30:24room and then in a
- 30:25staircase and talking about why.
- 30:30And what's cool about the
- 30:32ones in the living room,
- 30:32because his shoulder mobility is so bad,
- 30:34which was the point of
- 30:36emphasis on the original Hiller video,
- 30:40dogging him for his mobility.
- 30:42It's so he can stretch his
- 30:44shoulders out while he's watching TV.
- 30:49like it was a full circle
- 30:50moment that you only get if
- 30:52you can follow the story
- 30:54from something that, that, you know,
- 30:57we talk about the hero's
- 30:58journey a lot in
- 30:59storytelling and the hero's
- 31:01journey is there's a tragic
- 31:03event that the hero has to overcome.
- 31:05And that tragic event was
- 31:07hip and steel shouldn't
- 31:07have qualified for the
- 31:08games that year because his
- 31:09movement standards were terrible.
- 31:12And he acknowledged that.
- 31:14Now we come full circle on
- 31:15that hero's journey.
- 31:17And here he's installed
- 31:18rings in his living room at
- 31:21close to seventy years old
- 31:23to improve his shoulder
- 31:24mobility every night while watching TV.
- 31:27So that gives you that full circle story.
- 31:30The Erica follow stuff this
- 31:32week that Andrew did with
- 31:34her on a FaceTime.
- 31:37laying down on a bed after
- 31:39the syndicate with her
- 31:41coach and just shooting the
- 31:44breeze with Hiller and
- 31:46being open and transparent
- 31:47and honest about everything
- 31:49that went wrong over the weekend,
- 31:51that when she qualifies for the games,
- 31:54that tragic event of missing the games.
- 31:57We've got the fail from last year.
- 31:59We've got the thought I had it this year,
- 32:01but I don't.
- 32:03And then when she makes it,
- 32:04it's going to be epic.
- 32:07Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 32:11She's failing upwards, right?
- 32:14She failed, she failed again, but better.
- 32:18Like she's, she's stacking them on,
- 32:20stacking them on, stacking them.
- 32:22It, it, Rich falling off the rope.
- 32:25It's, you know, that was a,
- 32:26that was a story.
- 32:28That was a thing.
- 32:29Erica-
- 32:31And CrossFit back in the day
- 32:32took those risks on people.
- 32:34We've got a Tia Wright story
- 32:35that never did come to that epic climax,
- 32:39but you have to take your
- 32:40chances because the three
- 32:42that did come to the Brooke
- 32:45Entz one that actually
- 32:47ended up at the games, right?
- 32:49Yeah.
- 32:52I can't confirm from the one
- 32:54time that I actually got to
- 32:55meet Andrew in person.
- 32:56He is extremely easy to talk to.
- 33:00It's ridiculous.
- 33:01Like, we had on the same shoes.
- 33:04We talked for five minutes
- 33:04about our shoes being the same.
- 33:08And then the next day,
- 33:09because I was at Southland camp,
- 33:11the next day I brought him
- 33:14a C-IV because I had like
- 33:16six of them in my bag.
- 33:17And you would have thought I
- 33:18gave him a winning lottery ticket.
- 33:21He was like, is this for me?
- 33:23I said it.
- 33:25yeah I don't know if you had
- 33:26any I haven't had six seven
- 33:28in my bag I know you love
- 33:29them this is the one I'm is
- 33:31this your favorite flavor
- 33:32uh yeah currently he's like
- 33:36a little kid he really
- 33:37really was and I think that
- 33:39part of him knowing how to
- 33:42conversate with people and
- 33:43knowing how to get stories
- 33:44out of them and whatnot is
- 33:45what's making him so good
- 33:46at doing that con that type
- 33:47of content that he's doing
- 33:48you know even his other
- 33:50videos even his no rep
- 33:52videos his natty or not
- 33:53videos and whatnot
- 33:54He understands how to put
- 33:57together a story to where
- 33:58it's engaging and it's
- 34:02something you actually want to watch.
- 34:03Like,
- 34:03he knows how to grab you right from
- 34:04the start.
- 34:05And then some, you know,
- 34:07some hits are better than others.
- 34:08But like going back to the
- 34:09Hayley Adams video, when he put that out,
- 34:11dude,
- 34:11like people lost their minds because
- 34:15nobody had ever seen Hayley
- 34:16like that before on any piece of content.
- 34:18Mayhem, CrossFit, whatever.
- 34:21It took Andrew Hiller going
- 34:22on there and spending,
- 34:24whatever it was with her,
- 34:25to get that kind of story out of him.
- 34:28That's a rare thing.
- 34:29But I would challenge you,
- 34:30watch that today compared
- 34:33to the stuff he's putting
- 34:33out today and look at the
- 34:36development in his storytelling.
- 34:37Oh, yeah.
- 34:38Absolutely.
- 34:40One hundred percent.
- 34:42That was, I would say, the first one.
- 34:44One of the first ones that
- 34:45was probably... I think it
- 34:45was the first one.
- 34:47And then it's getting,
- 34:49and it's getting better
- 34:50every single time.
- 34:51He learned from his mistakes.
- 34:53He gets better.
- 34:54He puts out another one and it just,
- 34:56I mean, it's, it's insane at this point.
- 34:58He needed the Haley Adams
- 34:59one to get the credibility in that,
- 35:01in that area.
- 35:04Did the hip and steel one.
- 35:05I am, I have,
- 35:06I gained so much respect for
- 35:09Dave heaven steel after watching that,
- 35:11because now I actually know.
- 35:15I actually know what's going
- 35:16on with the dude.
- 35:17I actually know that he does care.
- 35:19It's not just that he just
- 35:20does shit just because he
- 35:22thinks he can get away with
- 35:23it or whatnot.
- 35:23Like, no, he actually does give a shit.
- 35:26That's a big deal.
- 35:26I'm so glad because I've
- 35:28known Dave since my
- 35:30volunteering days when he
- 35:32was first winning the CrossFit Games.
- 35:35And he's always been such a nice guy.
- 35:39And when the Andrew stuff first came out,
- 35:42like he came to me
- 35:44And he wanted to know if I
- 35:44would give him a platform
- 35:46to talk about it on the show.
- 35:48And I, and I basically said,
- 35:51I don't want to just give
- 35:52you a place to make excuses.
- 35:53Like your movements weren't good.
- 35:56Like, are we willing to talk about that?
- 35:58And, and with some back and forth,
- 36:01like it just, it never panned out.
- 36:03And
- 36:05So it's,
- 36:06and I'm just really grateful that
- 36:08they've kind of patched
- 36:09this all up and he's come on and said,
- 36:12hey, my movement wasn't good.
- 36:14And Hibbensteel's defense on that,
- 36:16you know, trying to come on your,
- 36:17he wasn't really,
- 36:18he wasn't ready to have a
- 36:19real conversation about it.
- 36:22He couldn't have been.
- 36:23Otherwise it would have
- 36:24happened here instead of
- 36:25with Hibbensteel.
- 36:27instead instead of with uh
- 36:28with andrew so yeah
- 36:31blessing for that like it
- 36:33took him a little bit of
- 36:34time but he was like okay
- 36:35let's have an actual
- 36:36conversation about what's
- 36:37going on and I can actually
- 36:39tell what tell what's going
- 36:41on without being defensive
- 36:42about it on my side uh
- 36:45andrew's getting very good
- 36:46at it he is obsessive and a
- 36:48perfectionist he does give
- 36:50a shit uh they have been
- 36:52still video changed so
- 36:53many's minds about him it's insane
- 36:56I feel Hiller has a very
- 36:57deep passion for CrossFit
- 36:58and he wants it to be the best it can be.
- 37:00I do not disagree with that at all.
- 37:02Yeah, no,
- 37:03that's a hundred percent correct.
- 37:06And it's evident in everything he does.
- 37:10This wasn't supposed to be a like,
- 37:13laud and kudos to hill or
- 37:14all show but um but I just
- 37:16wanted to point that out
- 37:17because the relationship
- 37:19building he does do is is
- 37:21really important in those
- 37:23videos and I think that he
- 37:25should get credit for that
- 37:29um finishing up with a
- 37:31couple other things we have
- 37:32a big lineup in norcal um they are um
- 37:39they are loading up that
- 37:41leaderboard with the people
- 37:42who are going to be there.
- 37:43The women's side is insane to,
- 37:46to say only two people are
- 37:47making it out of that side is, is crazy.
- 37:50The men's side is not as
- 37:51deep as I thought it was going to be.
- 37:54Like, yeah, because a legit shot, like,
- 37:59It's kind of that level of athlete.
- 38:01We're going to get Seth
- 38:02Stovall and Spencer Panchex
- 38:04and those types of athletes
- 38:07on the men's side unless
- 38:09somebody else comes in after.
- 38:13People are complaining about my font.
- 38:15I don't know if you guys have noticed.
- 38:17I change the font every single day.
- 38:18I was about to say, yeah,
- 38:20we get a new one every day.
- 38:22Yeah,
- 38:22just because I get bored with seeing
- 38:24the same thing, so...
- 38:26This looks like eight bit
- 38:27video game stuff.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:30I just, yeah, that's it.
- 38:33I just throw something new
- 38:35up every single day.
- 38:42Who would I like to see next
- 38:44on a Hiller video?
- 38:47So I think like the next one
- 38:50I want to see is somebody that
- 38:52take a shot on someone that
- 38:53they think is going to come
- 38:54up and do something amazing.
- 38:57Um, I would say somebody, I don't,
- 38:59I don't know who could very
- 39:01well be the next thing.
- 39:03You've got these teen girls, um,
- 39:05from the syndicate that all
- 39:06like we're having Reese Littlewood on,
- 39:08on Friday.
- 39:12Um,
- 39:12that's somebody that's going to be fun
- 39:13to watch.
- 39:14Um, I think on the men's side, there's,
- 39:16there's some young people coming up, um,
- 39:21Let me think about it.
- 39:22We'll talk about it later in the week.
- 39:31I never noticed until today
- 39:32old man complaining a lot.
- 39:35That's okay.
- 39:35That's what us old men do.
- 39:43Same, Ken.
- 39:43Not going to lie.
- 39:44I struggle to read the comments a bit.
- 39:52The only thing I try to stay
- 39:53away from is cursive.
- 39:58Yeah, that actually is hard to read.
- 40:00Especially IG handles.
- 40:04Tomorrow will be something
- 40:05different and you guys can
- 40:07give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
- 40:08The other thing that's going
- 40:10to be different tomorrow is
- 40:11I'm going to have a new thumbnail.
- 40:12Oh, I wonder why.
- 40:16Yeah, new thumbnail tomorrow for the show.
- 40:19I already have it developed, but
- 40:22to add cory and would have
- 40:24taken a little bit more
- 40:25work today um so I just
- 40:27went with our old cory one
- 40:30um and the old thing so
- 40:31I'll probably change even
- 40:32this background background
- 40:34um and go away from the the
- 40:37fonts on here too uh so
- 40:40we'll have something new on
- 40:42the background and on the
- 40:46So it's going to look a
- 40:47little different tomorrow.
- 40:48Make sure you see that when it goes out.
- 40:51Denise, you are so right about full swing.
- 40:53It is great to see the
- 40:54backstories of the rookies.
- 40:57I'm telling you,
- 40:59that is what Andrew is headed toward,
- 41:01is what full swing has done.
- 41:03And that's what I've been
- 41:03begging for CrossFit to do.
- 41:06And hopefully,
- 41:08we don't know what's going
- 41:09to happen with CrossFit in
- 41:09the next six months.
- 41:10I don't know what's going to
- 41:12happen with CrossFit in the
- 41:13next six hours.
- 41:16Sports are about storytelling.
- 41:18If you can't tell a story,
- 41:20it's never going to be a sport.
- 41:24People watch for the story.
- 41:26It's just a live story.
- 41:28Is the story going to play out?
- 41:29Is it not going to play out?
- 41:31We don't know.
- 41:36Bottom line.
- 41:39I appreciate Corey taking
- 41:40time out every week to share thoughts.
- 41:42There's something positive.
- 41:44Ken, you're a positive guy.
- 41:48but us old men, we,
- 41:49we get cranky on some days, you know,
- 41:52you sleep wrong and the
- 41:53neck hurts or something like that.
- 41:55And you just got to get through it.
- 41:59But guess what?
- 42:00You knuckleheads time to get back to work.
- 42:03I've got a meeting that I've
- 42:04got to run up the stairs for.
- 42:06I will see everybody
- 42:07tomorrow on lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 42:12Bye guys.
