Transcript
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the D show we normally do, where we taste and rank some beer.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: How's it going tonight, Brett?
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Who's this new guy over here?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I was like, you are not Phil.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Who are you?
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I'm not Phil.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Which is sad for me, I suppose.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Well, sad, I mean, bad for him.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: He's not here.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: He doesn't get any beer.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Sorry, Phil.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Wah wah.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: So our our guest tonight filling in for Philly Boy is uh the the brewmaster for steeple brewing in Hastings, Nebraska, uh Damon Jensen Heitman.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Damon, welcome to the show.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Welcome, welcome.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: It's good to be here.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think this is gonna be fun.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Beer has all been provided to me, so I mean you can't ask for more than that.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I'm generally happy to show up.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: The table, the table is strewn with fermented beverages.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: All has been prepared.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And we have somebody who actually knows actually.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Uh so on that note, uh let's hop into uh what we're going to be drinking tonight.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Uh Brett, what do we got?
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: This is one uh from a mana.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, I overthought a man.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Coming out of millstream brewing.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It's just this like, hey, there's a man uh over there.
- 1:39unknown: Uh okay.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: The sad thing is, this is like our first double dip brewery.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: We've said this once already.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: I know, and I'm overthinking it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: A mana Iowa, millstream brewing, and it is the knee high hefeweisen.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: What do we think?
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Is that my turn?
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Just awkward silence.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: That's you know, I I don't know.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know, you know.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: This is we're off on the right foot here.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Uh so Hefeweisen, Damon, would you give us a little insight on but before we get into like tasting and talking about the taste of beer, what what is a what is a Hefeweisen?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Hefeweisen generally is a a type of um a Weiss beer.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Uh so this is German.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Um by origin, a Weiss beer just means uh white beer or just a really light um beer in terms of color.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Uh Hefeweisen is a wheat beer, so it's um should probably be at least 50% wheat, uh malt in the in the grain profile.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And oftentimes the yeast uh gets left in it.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Um so uh and it's a different strain of yeast um as well.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of the but that's kind of the basics of the of the profile.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Well, if you guys haven't taken a sip yet, I would say go ahead and take a sip.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then let's uh we'll talk a little bit about flavor and and uh smell we're getting here.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: This is a nice change for us.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: Like this is a light, a nice light beer that has a lot of flavor to it.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, in our defense, we've been doing a lot of pickle beers and very strong.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: So many pickle beers.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're drinking the weird stuff.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it, appreciate, appreciate the endorsement there.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: But yes.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, I mean, the first thing I get on this is like when you when you take a little smell of it, you do get some banana notes up front.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I don't feel like that comes through on the palate so much.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I think the clove comes through on the palate somewhat.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Uh it's it's a it's a fairly well balanced beer flavor-wise to me, though.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the website describes it as the light banana and clove aroma on this hazy pale Hefewizen.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Welcomes you to the welcome, welcomes you to spring in Iowa.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Wheat in the gist wheat in the grist leans to a creamy and thick body with a smooth finish.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know, like when I think spring in Iowa, I don't really think banana.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: Well, that's you are from there.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Not a thing that it was like, oh hey, it's a spring.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: It's time for the banana harvest.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Uh but they make it work.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: It's it's yeah, like, yeah, this seems like really very sort of true to style of uh Heavizen.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: It's got that really distinct flavor that comes pretty much all from the yeast.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Um that gives it that sort of clove kind of it tastes kind of peppery to me, the the more it lingers on my palate.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Um and it also I should stop saying um.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: You're fine.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: It's our first time.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: No, no, no.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Well, here, but I hear publicly fairly frequently.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: It also I I noticed a change in flavor as it warmed up.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Which would it and I thought actually it tasted better the warmer that it got.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: But yeah, when we first tried it, it was very cold and it almost had like a bite to it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: It was it has like kind of a sharp taste at yeah when it first was coming out.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Now, after it sat for a little bit, really mellowing out.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Is it pretty common from your experience that the German style beers typically tend to taste better when they're warmer?
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean it uh it certainly could be.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Uh I just didn't know if it was like because I mean when you think of going to Germany and drinking beer, you tend to get warmer beers.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And so I just curious.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Certainly a more European thing, right?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: That the beer gets served or consumed at a warmer temperature than what a lot of Americans are are used to.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So but yeah, the certainly with this one, the the warmer it got, the more it I think Brett, your spot on like the more it kind of smoothed, smoothed out a little bit.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I liked it more as it as we went along for sure.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Uh so color-wise, we talked a little bit about Hefeweissons tend to be light, very light beers.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: I think it certainly fits the bill.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Um, tonight we actually have some clear glasses at the table.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Normally we don't have clear glasses at the table, which leads to a little awkwardness when we get to this point.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: It's like did somebody check when you were pouring it.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: What was the pour like?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Uh but as far as malt on this, uh being a wheat beer, uh it doesn't have like an overly strong malt profile.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: I'm not tasting like toastiness or anything like that in this one.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Uh no, none of that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I I wouldn't.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: None of that sort of caramel or you know, yeah, no, none of that stuff.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: It's it's light, it's clean, it's yeah, it's it's uh it's close to kind of excuse me, kind of a yeah, that's sort of summer beer, right?
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And I and I think uh in in almost a little bit of a preview of our challenge rating later, there's not a lot of distinguishable hop flavor.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Like you don't get a punch of bitterness in there.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: You do taste a little hops in there, but not much.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: And maybe a little bit of yeast flavor, but again, not much there, which makes this just a very bull a very approachable beer in a lot of ways.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, most of the hop is just gonna is gonna be largely for aroma, actually.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Um, it's gonna give you some of that sort of um pepperier kind of aroma as well.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: I don't know what hops they threw in here, but and I don't know if we mentioned this, but this this beer does check in at a 5.7 uh ABV um at a 12 on the IBU scale.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: So the IBUs certainly make sense because there's not a lot there.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: 12?
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: I know I feel like 12 is high, really.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: That's um and I and I almost feel like the 5.7 feels high because I don't I don't this could be a sneaky beer in a lot of ways to me.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Um, and we've had some beers on this show where the triple IPA comes to mind.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that one comes to mind first first and foremost.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Uh but yeah, I I mean all around this this is uh a very like I said, a very approachable beer and and uh lines up pretty well with your typical have a vice.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: And so we're uh let's move on at this point.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, we're moving.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Oh no, we're not moving on.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, hang on.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: Before we get there, we gotta talk about the can.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: That's lingering.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: We do need to talk about the ingus.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Let's linger on this.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Uh a little kid on the can with a nice big black Angus steer or bowl of some sort.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Boy, nothing says Iowa and or Nebraska than a big old black Angus steer.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Yes, like you fit you fit the bill.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: But but again, uh bananas and steers probably not connecting to them.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: I I'm not I'm not judging choices here.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Steers.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: You know, this is not our first animal on a can.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: No, we've got to be.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: We've also had a gyrating giraffe.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Yes, we have had a gyrating giraffe.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: The just for the record for everybody listening, the steer is not gyrating or it is on two legs in any form or fashion.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: But disclaimer.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Check out that episode.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: It's a little bit more about the gyrating grip.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, so now let's okay, what do you got?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: So half a bison, also uh a style of beer that a lot will oftentimes get served with an orange wedge, sure.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or some sort of a citrus wedge as well, uh, which yeah, I think would work really well for that.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: Come on, Ross.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Where's our oranges?
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I you know, I have there's some tangerines.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Bring in there's some tangerines up in the bridge.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I missed the bell.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry, my bad.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I apologize.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: I didn't necessarily mean to call you out on that, but I'm glad that's it.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Well, somebody's gotta do it, so it might as well be Brett to start, but it you shady wise did it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: It fit well with the banana.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I think it would play really well with that actually.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Would it overpower the banana?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: I don't feel like boom, boom, boom.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Typically, there's not enough orange in that slice that it overpowers the beer.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: It's more like accentuates what's in the beer.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: Brightens it.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in a lot of ways.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: So okay.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Have you guys said your piece?
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Are we okay to move on?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Now I wanted like triple check before we move on.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Can we?
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Can we?
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Can we where are we going after this?
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I reserve the right to go back, but that's fine.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's let's move uh into uh let's bring the DD back into this.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, because after all, this is part of a bigger DD world that we live in.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Uh Brett, you're starting us off tonight.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Where are we finding this beer?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: What beer what beer?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: What pub?
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: So we are going to the bustling town of Burdusk.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Berdusk, Berdusk, I can't pick words tonight.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Uh Burdusk, and we are going to the Grumbling Griffin.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Which um the local bartender, beer tender uh at the Grumbling Griffin is named Pip Mosswick.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: He's a gnome that gave up smoking.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Pip Mosswick gave up smoking.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: He gave up smoking.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: He would love a nice fat cigar, a nice fat stogie.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: And he gave it up.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: So he This was like like on doctor's recommendation.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: He he welcomed a child into the world.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Why did he give it up?
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: He was getting that cough.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: He was getting a smoker's cough.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: So he gave up smoking the stogies, uh, and instead went to into brewing beer.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: But he still wanted a little bit of that that that flavor.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: So he made a clove beer named the second wind wheat.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Ooh, okay.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: Okay, sure.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: So it's it's giving him a second second wind in life.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Damon, do you do you want to go next?
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Am I going next?
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: I can do it first if you like.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I I don't care.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: You you let's go.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Let's see what you got.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Uh so I d I don't know any of the towns.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: It's fine.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna describe to you the town where I think that this pub is located.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: Uh first of all, it's uh it's a it's a it's a river town.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: If there is a D D equivalent of Pittsburgh.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Uh-oh.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Shout out to our fans in Pittsburgh.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: It's that it has that kind of an ethos, this town, right?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: It's it's on the river, there's mill work being done, uh, they're you know grinding flour, or you know, whatever you do in a thing you grind in in a mill, right?
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Or or cutting lumber, I suppose.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Do they have saws?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, they got saws.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Uh it's it's that sort of a blue-collar kind of uh kind of a town.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Not Daggerwood.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Daggerford.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: That's what exactly what I was looking at.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Daggerford.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Daggerford?
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Daggerford.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: It's a lot smaller than Pittsburgh, but it it fits the bill.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: F-O-R-D?
- 13:10unknown: Yeah.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Daggerford.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, so we're in Daggerford.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Now, is this a halfling's dagger or kind of a dagger to last week's episode?
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I'm not even around that much.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's gotta be it's gotta be a halfling because it's only a town of about 300, so it's a small town.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that that I like that.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: It should be mini Pittsburgh.
- 13:36unknown: Okay.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Really mini Pittsburgh.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: And the name of the tavern is the Wanderer's Soul.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Ooh, I like that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Um, the Wanderer's Soul.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that we were supposed to come up with a name for the beer table.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: You can if you want.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: If you want to.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: I I mean we can leave it at that too.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I think that's still pretty good for your first run.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: But the wanderer's soul, and I think that it's um I think it's an inn.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, sure.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: You know, where there's a couple of rooms above.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: It's probably the only inn in Daggerford.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: To be let.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Sure, certainly.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So it's the Wanderer's Soul.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And then the name of the beer is Bertha's Kling.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Bertha's Bertha's Kling.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Okay, what's the story behind this?
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Well, see, that's my what I'm thinking.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: So when I when I tasted the beer, the the taste sort of hung around.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: And I got the the longer that it hung around, I got more of that sort of clove kind of peppery sort of flavor.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: And I think Bertha is she's just she's just kind of always, she's the person who's just kind of always just kind of hanging around and just kind of always the person who's always looking for somebody to sort of draw into conversation, whether they really want to or not.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And and just the sort of person that you you really have to extricate yourself from the conversation.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, and and be okay with I'm is now it's time for me to just walk away.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Because Bertha's gonna be fine.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: She's gonna be fine, somebody else talk to talk to.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: That's you don't really need to worry about she's not gonna finish the conversation.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: No, no, she'll when you show up, she'll pick it right back up.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna miss it, miss a bit.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna be a problem.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: So uh the wanderer's soul is where you can find this tasty brew known as Bertha's Kling.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: That's that's pretty dang good for your first run.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: I'm impressed.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Nicely done.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Ross, where are you taking us?
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: So, full disclosure before I go, Damon has played DD with us, so he is not completely new to this game.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: No, uh, he may not have known that Daggerford existed before today, but uh I'm not sure we did.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: He well, well, you know.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: It's a small town.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: It just it just depends.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Depends on the night.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Uh I just know that town where Strahd?
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Straud?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Strahd, yeah, Strahd, yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: He was trying to ruin everything.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Barovia.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: You were you were around in Barovia for a while.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Just keeping the people down.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: He was.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Still, still is.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Still is.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, still?
- 16:16unknown: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: No, but I mean, at least that campaign we didn't actually get.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: You guys didn't take care of that?
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: We didn't know still working.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: We need to introduce Strahd to Bertha.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Let's just talk his ear out.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: How to kill Strahd.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Introduce him to Bertha.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: Two sessions.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: So, my beer, we're gonna travel to the underhome, which is the dwarven capital of Fey Rune.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, here you will find the Dwarven Cloud Bloom Ale at the Iron Beard Brew Iron Beard Brew Hall.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: And the interesting thing is, is the bananas are the high commodity for them.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Like, fights get started when the bananas come in because they have to lock those bad boys down.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: So they send like three or four of the dwarven thugs down.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: You're saying the people go bananas?
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Yes, the dwarves go bananas over the bananas.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Yes, you are absolutely correct.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Do you have a rim shot sound effect?
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I I I mean it's called Brett.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: Good job, Brett.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Uh so that's as deep of my as my story goes.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Um Okay.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: That's all I got for tonight.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: I mean now, why is it a brew hall?
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, Damon wins.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean well, he does win.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: You're absolutely right.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: He comes in and shows us up.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, why is it a brew hall?
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: I I mean I think you just feel like the the dwarving culture leads lends itself well to brew halls.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Like they gather in the evenings there.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: There's probably several of these, but this is the one where they they they're locking elbows.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, where they're singing songs, and that's where you find this beer.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: So it's like people show up for this.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: So singing songs, getting in fights on occasion, things like that over bananas.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Do they make it there?
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Because those like they go out and they they now where are the bananas coming from?
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, from the south of Favorin.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: This is like up in the north where it's cold, so it's like they have to import bananas.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: But it's a it's a tropical zone in the south?
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: More tropical than in the north for sure.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Enough so that there's some bananas coming in.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Maybe they don't come, I mean, probably way south, but at some point enough to grow some bananas, I would think.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: They come in on a banana cart.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: There's a banana salesman.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Thank you for that.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: What's the name of the banana salesman, Ross?
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: I did not come away.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Um Slim?
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Banana Jazz.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Does his cart play a song when it comes in?
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Absolutely it does.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Can the next thing that you make in garage band being the banana cart song?
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I'll get to work on that mental note.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Banana cart song.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: His logo is the banana boat little baby with the sunscreen.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: The Chiquita lady.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: He comes in with a banana.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Oh gosh.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's let's rate this beer.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: So on a scale of so the scale that we use on a scale of one to 20, uh, one being cream males, your domestics are gonna fall into down there as far as like approachability.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: 20 on the other end is gonna be Imperial Stouts, uh, probably like double IPAs, things like that that are very hoppy and hard for for non-crap beer drinkers to really get into.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: Where does this one fall on the scale, guys?
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: This one's tricky.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna give it two numbers.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: What?
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: Your number again?
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: No, I'm gonna give two numbers.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Well, it's it is an option now.
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: So we're adjusting the rules on the fly.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: When we poured it and it was really cold, I would give that like a 15.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: After it mellowed out, I would drop it way down to a seven.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Because I think the the bite of a 15, it would uh shock a lot of non-craft beer drinkers.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: After it mellows out, it's a lot more approachable.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it it almost presents as sour.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Right at right at the start.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is yeah, which is a totally different sort of a thing.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I'd agree, I also agree that it is kind of a tricky because it's an interesting style, because if you just saw it in the glass, it's it's it's it's really light.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: It's got a little bit of a of a cloud, sort of a haziness, and that that's from the wheat that's in it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Um I would I think I'd put it at maybe uh I think I'd put it at I'm gonna go with nine.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Nine.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is my number somewhere pretty close to the middle, because that yeast is just a different kind of yeast than someone who's n who's only gonna go for a cream ale or like if they're gonna go into craft beer, like that's gonna be different enough to make a person think, ooh, I'm not so sure about this.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: We're all over the board on that.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're it's giving me pause a little bit, only because and I hold on, hold on.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Time out.
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: What was your before you go any further?
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: Say your number.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: What was your first guess?
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: Uh my my gut was a six.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: But see, also where where I struggle a little bit is like taking myself out of the equation.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: So like trying to imagine myself as somebody just having a craft beer for the first time and taking a sip of that.
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's not as low as some of the ones that we've had.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: Um I I I I I would probably leave it as a six, but I definitely get the high end when it's cold, and it does present some sour notes to it, and I get that.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Um high end when it's cold, I'd say 12, 6, 6 after it mellows out.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: I I think it's a good beer.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I think it's still approachable for somebody that's that wants to get into it.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: It's not too too overpowering in any way, though.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: So uh now that we've kind of established our ranking on this, yay or nay, this is for you, not necessarily for everybody else.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Yay, nay on this beer, guys.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: What does yay mean?
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Yay means you would drink this again.
- 22:18unknown: Okay.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Nay means no bueno.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: Damon, where are you coming at?
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is a yay.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: I think that's that's pretty clear.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: It's a good one.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: I'm going yay as well.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: And I think this is a good one for somebody to graduate to.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Like if you're just coming into the world of craft beers and you're buying like the domestic equival equivalent to what somebody has, this is a nice maybe one or two steps up to get you into a little bit more unique styles that can still be approachable.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I I I agree with that.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: I it's yay for me too, but I I like your description there because I think that's a good point.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: It's like if you get in with like a creamy or something, you want to experiment a little bit flavor-wise.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Like it, it's the you can push yourself to it.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: The banana and clove is not a normal beer flavor per se.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: So it's like you have to go out of your comfort zone a little bit to try this.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: And I I think it's a good one to try, it's a nice next step.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: All right, Brett, if uh anybody wants to find the Nehigh Hefeweizen, how would they go about doing that and finding more information?
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: You can find them at millstreambrewing.com or on all sorts of social media.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, look out for it hitting shelves soon.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: It is a brand new release for this spring.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a good one.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Check it out.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and shout out to Millstream for being our first double dip brewery they were on a while back and now uh back with another beer.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, hopefully we taste some more Iowa beer in the future.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: And also, thank you to Damon for joining us tonight on loan, if you will, uh, to use some soccer vernacular uh from Steeple Brewer.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Hey, I've been paying attention to Arsenal lately, so you're on loan from Steeple for some podcasting, right?
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to know what my loan fee was.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Uh well, beer, free beer.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: More free beer.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: How about that?
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: I need a new agent.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: You can talk to your bots, that's fine.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, stay tuned for more beer reviews in the future.
