- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37There's a purpose in all these things and God is ultimately
- 0:40glorified. And one day this enemy of our
- 0:43souls and the enemy of the Kingdom of God will be one day
- 0:46in that final judgement cast into the lake of fire forever
- 0:50and ever and ever to bother or hassle anyone again.
- 0:54But he's always working to trouble the church.
- 0:56His big focus is to destroy the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 1:00The good news is Jesus Christ says I will build my church and
- 1:05the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
- 1:08I was recently encouraged by a friend who shared with me that
- 1:11we need not fear the devil in his schemes.
- 1:14He said that gates are a defensive structure, something
- 1:17used to prevent or withstand an attack.
- 1:21If hell has gates, that means that Christ and all of heaven
- 1:25along with him is on the attack. Pastor Clark reminds us today
- 1:30that while we ought to be wary of the devil and his Wiles, to
- 1:34be vigilant, but we should also walk in confidence knowing that
- 1:38we've already been given the victory through Christ.
- 1:41Now here's Pastor Clark in the Book of Psalms Chapter 32 with
- 1:45today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:49He promises He'll never leave us or forsake us.
- 1:51Sometimes we feel like God, where are you?
- 1:53I felt like that at times. I'm sure you have too.
- 1:55You're going through something. You're like, Lord, where are you
- 1:58in all this? But He's there, He's always
- 2:00there. He promises never to leave us.
- 2:02He walks through it with us. I like what Psalm 32 says.
- 2:06He says, behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
- 2:10on those who hope in His mercy to deliver their soul from death
- 2:13and to keep them alive. And in falling.
- 2:18Our soul waits for the Lord. He is our help and our shield,
- 2:22for our heart shall rejoice in Him because we have trusted in
- 2:25His holy name. Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon
- 2:28us, just as we hope in you. He says that in these trials, in
- 2:33the midst of these trials, they're rich.
- 2:35And James says in chapter 2, verse 5, Listen, my beloved
- 2:39brethren, has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in
- 2:43faith and heirs of the Kingdom which He promised to them who
- 2:47love Him? I think about the Christians in
- 2:49Haiti. You've seen them on TV, haven't
- 2:51you? They have lost everything.
- 2:53They didn't have anything to begin with.
- 2:55One of the most poor countries in the world.
- 2:58They have this horrendous earthquake that wipes out over
- 3:03200,000 people. Many of them lost their
- 3:06children, their spouses, their loved ones, their friends and I
- 3:11was blown away to see them assembling together, raising
- 3:15their hands and worshipping God. Poor inheriting the Kingdom of
- 3:21God. He speaks about the adversary,
- 3:24the devil, and he is a real being.
- 3:28He is interested in destroying all of our lives.
- 3:31The Bible tells us the devil has come to seek and to kill and to
- 3:35rob and to destroy. He is involved in this world
- 3:40every day to keep it from knowing the truth of Jesus
- 3:43Christ. He is sending his emissaries out
- 3:47all the time to prevent you and me from growing and the grace
- 3:50and the knowledge of God. He wants us to be stunted,
- 3:53immature Christians. He wants us to live without our
- 3:56inheritance in this world, not experiencing the Kingdom of God
- 4:00within. He'll do everything he can to
- 4:03destroy your faith. The Lord allows him to work.
- 4:07That's the mystery. And the purposes of God are
- 4:10sometimes very, very complex for our human frail minds to
- 4:14understand. But the Bible tells us that
- 4:15God's ways aren't our ways. Neither are his thoughts.
- 4:18Our thoughts for his ways are so much higher than our ways, and
- 4:22His thoughts so much higher than ours.
- 4:25There's a purpose in all these things, and God is ultimately
- 4:28glorified. And one day this enemy of our
- 4:30souls and the enemy of the Kingdom of God will be one day
- 4:34in that final judgment cast into the lake of fire forever and
- 4:37ever and ever to bother or hassle anyone again.
- 4:41But he's always working to trouble the church.
- 4:44His big focus is to destroy the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 4:48The good news is Jesus Christ says I will build my church and
- 4:52the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
- 4:55The enemy can take everybody out, but it can't stop the work
- 4:59of God moving on. And many of these people had
- 5:03given their lives in this day and Smyrna for the sake of the
- 5:06gospel. But it hasn't stopped the
- 5:08movement of the gospel 2000 years later.
- 5:11He speaks about these people that are enemies of God and
- 5:15they're tools of the devil. It says these folks say they are
- 5:18Jews and they are not two different kind of Jews.
- 5:22Jews that have a heart for Messiah.
- 5:26Jews who are waiting. Jews, even at the time of Christ
- 5:29crucifixion, were sensitive, even though they couldn't
- 5:31understand that he at this time was the one they were waiting
- 5:35for. They had a vulnerable, a
- 5:37vulnerability of softness. Many of them eventually did come
- 5:41to believe on Christ. Because the early church was
- 5:43made-up primarily of Jews and they carried the worship of the
- 5:47synagogue right into the New Testament.
- 5:49Many of the symbolism and the pictures and the art and the
- 5:52design of the priestly garments and robes were carried through
- 5:56from the Jewish temple. It's interesting as we're
- 5:58reading right now in Exodus, isn't it the, the, the specific
- 6:01detail on how God wanted that Tabernacle built, the colors,
- 6:07the, the length of the, the material that was used, the
- 6:10embroidery and the, the symbolism, the type at this,
- 6:14this mind blowing of the, of the beauty of, of God and and his
- 6:17Kingdom, his church. But there were obviously as
- 6:21there is today, not any Jews but Gentiles who cannot stand the
- 6:25gospel of Christ and they are the enemies of the gospel.
- 6:30I would say organizations like the ACLU, they are dead set
- 6:36against our freedoms as Christians and the message that
- 6:41we proclaim the person we believe in and trust in his Lord
- 6:45and Savior. Many, many people today on the
- 6:49liberal side of the agenda that are pushing all these teachings
- 6:55of of really ungodliness are against what we do here, what we
- 7:01do as churches in these last days, standing on the scriptures
- 7:05and teaching the word of God. And so because of the large
- 7:09population of Jews in Smyrna, the Christians were really
- 7:12overrun by all these people that wanted to destroy them.
- 7:16It was a tough place to be a Christian in.
- 7:19They were the main enemies of the gospel.
- 7:22Verse 10, he says to them again, don't fear these things which
- 7:25you are about to suffer. Luke chapter 12, verse 4, Jesus
- 7:30says to the disciples, my friends, do not fear those who
- 7:33kill the body and after that have no more that they can do,
- 7:38but fear the one who has the power to cast 1 into hell.
- 7:43So Christ himself reminding us that we're not to fear what man
- 7:48can do to us. You know, there's this element
- 7:51of fear that we all have, a fear of disease, fear of failure,
- 7:56fear of financial ruin, fear of losing job.
- 8:00We all, we all struggle with a certain type of fear, but a fear
- 8:03of knowing that you're in the jail cell tonight.
- 8:06This is your last night on earth.
- 8:08And you know, tomorrow you're going to be thrown to the lions
- 8:11or you're going to have your head cut off because of your
- 8:13faith. And you're probably walking
- 8:15around pacing in the cell saying, Lord, I really believe
- 8:18you. But I really have to go through
- 8:19this. Is there another way out of
- 8:20this? You know, would you mind if I
- 8:22just, you know, I really believe in you, but would you mind if I
- 8:24just told him I didn't? I'm sure those things would go
- 8:29through all of our minds and our hearts, especially when our
- 8:32families maybe were at home and we knew that we wouldn't see
- 8:35them again until the next life. The struggle of having to wait
- 8:42for the Lord to bring everything to a final culmination in the
- 8:45last day. But I think about martyrs.
- 8:47I think about Stephen, the first martyr in the New Testament in
- 8:50Acts Chapter 7. This is what happened after he's
- 8:54being accused of treason and he's speaking out and
- 8:57proclaiming the gospel with all his heart, all his mind, all his
- 9:01soul is strength, such conviction and fervor and love
- 9:04in his heart for the people he's speaking to.
- 9:06He's speaking to them about who Jesus is and what he did for
- 9:09them. It says that people were so
- 9:11angry they clenched their teeth. They just like, let me, Adam,
- 9:15let me get rid of him, just like they wanted to get rid of
- 9:17Christ. And it says, but he being full
- 9:20of the Holy Spirit. And that's the key, guys.
- 9:23No matter what we're going through in life, the struggles,
- 9:26the fears, the anxieties, the pressures at work or home or
- 9:29wherever, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we're
- 9:34overcomers. But when we're filled with our
- 9:37own vanity and pride and our own fear, we're basket cases.
- 9:42Stephen's full of the Holy Spirit.
- 9:43He gazes into heaven and God gives him a vision.
- 9:46He sees the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand
- 9:50of God. I love that Christ stood up.
- 9:53He it says right now he's seated at the right hand of Father ever
- 9:56living to make intercession for us, his Saints day and night.
- 9:59He's praying for us all the time.
- 10:01But there's a limit, isn't there?
- 10:02What he's going to allow to happen to his kids.
- 10:05And so he sees what's going on with Stephen and he couldn't
- 10:08help but to stand up. And one day he's going to stand
- 10:11up and not only stand up, but come back and put all things in
- 10:14order and he's going to destroy wickedness from the face of the
- 10:17earth, and no one will ever raise their hand to one of his
- 10:21children again. What a day that'll be.
- 10:24When are Jesus? We shall see when we look into
- 10:27his face, the one who saved us by his grace, the old song, what
- 10:31a day, glorious day that will be.
- 10:33And so Jesus, he stands in the right hand of the Father.
- 10:38And Stephen says, look, I see the heavens opened and the Son
- 10:41of man standing at the right hand of God.
- 10:47What a privilege he was given. And as they began to stone him,
- 10:52he's calling on God, and he's saying, Lord Jesus, receive my
- 10:56spirit. He kneels down and he cries with
- 11:00a loud voice. Lord, do not charge them with
- 11:04this sin. And when he had said this, he
- 11:06fell asleep. He went to be with the Lord.
- 11:08What love, huh? You know, the the example of
- 11:11martyrs, they're not proud and they're not hating the people
- 11:13that are killing them. Their hearts are breaking for
- 11:16the people that are taking their lives.
- 11:19And that's the love of Jesus Christ.
- 11:20I think of what he said when he was being crucified on the
- 11:23cross. He said, Father forgive them for
- 11:26they know not what they do. All of us are responsible for
- 11:29crucifying Christ. We know we're guilty and we know
- 11:33it's our sin that caused him to die.
- 11:36And he says to his Father, Father, forgive all those people
- 11:41for they know not what they do. And and then we see Stephen, a
- 11:45stunning example of the person of Jesus Christ and his witness,
- 11:50his testimony, his countenance. Lord, don't charge us to them.
- 11:54Don't charge us sin to them. I think of the the gospel and
- 11:59the Beatitudes when Jesus says love your enemies, pray for
- 12:04those who despitefully use you and say O manner of evil about
- 12:07you for my name's sake. Guys, if we're not loving
- 12:11people, the people that drive us nuts, the people that mess our
- 12:15lives up, the people that hurt us the most and wound us the
- 12:20greatest, if we don't love them, then we aren't like Stephen, are
- 12:25we? We're not like Jesus.
- 12:27We need to say to the Lord, when people do things to us, Lord,
- 12:32don't charge this sin to their account on my behalf that we
- 12:37love them. That's the gospel.
- 12:39That's what Christianity is, isn't it?
- 12:42Not a bunch of words. It's real action, real love.
- 12:46First Peter 314 says even if you should suffer for righteousness
- 12:50sake, do not be afraid of their thoughts or be troubled or their
- 12:56threats or not to be afraid. And the, the definition of
- 12:59fearlessness, being fearless is not necessarily a total absence
- 13:04of dread. You know, when you're facing
- 13:06something that you know, man, you're, you're scared and you
- 13:09don't know how you're going to get through it.
- 13:12When you're fearless, it doesn't mean you don't have a sense of
- 13:14dread or what if or you know that's human stuff.
- 13:17But rather it's the refusal to succumb to the intimidation of
- 13:21the circumstance of trial so that the threats of harm do not
- 13:26turn you back from your loyalty and faith in Christ, no matter
- 13:29what. He speaks about this warfare in
- 13:32verse 10. Do not fear these things which
- 13:36are about to come upon you. The testing, the persecution.
- 13:42The devil, he says clearly is about to throw some of you into
- 13:45prison that you may be tested. He says you will have
- 13:49tribulation for 10 days. You know, the devil is, it's
- 13:55interesting his, his influence. On one hand, he's a destroyer.
- 14:01On the other hand, God uses them in some sense to be a
- 14:04sanctifier. Isn't that ironic?
- 14:08Because like in Job, a book that Christians don't like to read,
- 14:14the worst of things happen to this guy, right?
- 14:19And there was a conversation in the 1st chapter where God's
- 14:22talking to Satan. Where you been?
- 14:24Oh, I've been roaming up and down on to and fro, going all
- 14:26around, you know, and this subject comes up about Job.
- 14:31He's a man of great faith, a man who would never deny and always
- 14:36be faithful. And Satan saying, well, you
- 14:39know, it's easy for him. You got a hedge around him.
- 14:41Nothing can touch his life. I bet if you took that hedge
- 14:45down and gave me some opportunity to mess with him,
- 14:47he'd curse you. Well, Job never cursed God.
- 14:53He struggled through the circumstances and the trials.
- 14:56His heart was broken at times. He had questions.
- 15:01God can handle the questions when you want to ask him.
- 15:04Doesn't mean you're going to get an answer.
- 15:06But he did give Joe some pretty profound answers.
- 15:09Were you there when I hung the universe in space and suspended
- 15:13the stars? He just begins to talk about his
- 15:16great creative power and his incredible miraculous ability to
- 15:19create all this out of nothing. And I can just see Joe because
- 15:23he's hearing that. I get it, Laura.
- 15:26I get who am I? Who is any of us the question of
- 15:30greatness of our God, but the testing will make us stronger in
- 15:36the Lord. When you guys go through trials,
- 15:39I know it's not something you want to jump up and down and be
- 15:41excited about, but it says in James 1/2, it says my brother
- 15:45encountered all joy. When you fall into various
- 15:47trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience,
- 15:52it's going to make you more like Jesus.
- 15:55It really, it really does. And all of us who have been
- 15:58through trials and testings and difficulties, we're becoming
- 16:02more like him. But whenever we fight the trials
- 16:06and we try to run away from them, we don't want to deal with
- 16:09it. We have to later on go back and
- 16:12go through perhaps something different in order to learn what
- 16:15it is that the Lord wants us to learn.
- 16:18Jesus tells us in the Gospels in Matthew 5.
- 16:21Blessed are you when there reviling and persecuting you and
- 16:26they're saying all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.
- 16:29Rejoice and be exceedingly glad for great is your reward in
- 16:32heaven for so they persecuted the prophets who were before
- 16:36you. So when you got people that
- 16:37really hate you because of your stand for Christ or they want to
- 16:41make comments about you because they don't think you're perfect
- 16:44enough or whatever, just smile, enjoy it because great will be
- 16:49your reward when you are given persecution and criticism and
- 16:55remarks about your walk with the Lord and your faith.
- 16:58That's a wonderful thing to have the privilege of, of, of
- 17:01hearing. And if you accept it lovingly
- 17:04and pray for the people that are saying these things about you,
- 17:07he promises a great reward in heaven.
- 17:10First Peter chapter 1, If you flip over there just for a
- 17:13minute, so much of this parallels the the writings of
- 17:16some of the other apostles. First, Peter, I want you to read
- 17:19this for yourself first. Peter, chapter one, verse 6
- 17:23through 9, it says in this you greatly rejoice, though now for
- 17:28a little while if need be, you have been grieved by various
- 17:30trials. Some of you today I know are in
- 17:33various trials and you're grieved about it.
- 17:36You don't like what you're experiencing.
- 17:37You don't like what you're going through.
- 17:40But the purpose of this is in verse 7 that the genuineness of
- 17:43your faith being much more precious and gold that perish,
- 17:46though it's tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor and
- 17:50glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
- 17:53In other words, is our faith real?
- 17:56If it's real, it'll last the trial, it'll get through the
- 18:01difficulty. It won't abandoned the gospel of
- 18:05Jesus Christ. It'll get stronger and closer to
- 18:08the Lord. What's the scripture say?
- 18:11Though he slay me, yet I will trust him.
- 18:16That's someone who knows who God is, someone who loves God and
- 18:21knows, hey, this body going to last 7080 years at best.
- 18:26But my Lord and my God, I will be with him for all eternity.
- 18:31For Peter says whom having not yet seen you love, though now
- 18:34you do not see him yet you believe you rejoice with joy
- 18:38inexpressible and full of glory receiving the end of your faith,
- 18:43the salvation of your souls. He talks about this ten days of
- 18:47of trials and it's not so much we're just going to have 10 days
- 18:50of problems here and everything is going to be cool.
- 18:52Now there was actually in the sense of we take a literal
- 18:55perspective of what he's he's representing here.
- 18:58There was a wave of persecution that began and continued to the
- 19:023rd century unlike any other time of persecution on the face
- 19:05of the earth, unlike any time up until the soon coming
- 19:08tribulation that will fall upon this earth in Christ timing.
- 19:14There was 10 actual empires, emperors that persecuted the
- 19:18church throughout the first 3 centuries.
- 19:20And so we believe this is what this is referring to.
- 19:24And it's important to realize that we all want everything to
- 19:27go great in our lives, right? I mean, that's just human
- 19:30nature. No pressure, no hassle.
- 19:32Martyrdom, boy, God bless those people.
- 19:35Not here in America. Let that stay over there in
- 19:37Indonesia and China and Afghanistan and Sudan.
- 19:40Not here, but I don't know where we're going as a country.
- 19:44It doesn't seem like we're going in the right place right now.
- 19:47And if things don't turn around, if Christians don't stand up for
- 19:49the truth and that our light is not hid under a basket, but it's
- 19:53seen in the workplace, the marketplace, the community.
- 19:57If we're not preaching and being using the freedoms we have,
- 20:01we'll lose the freedoms. And but we're not, we're not
- 20:05promised to be protected from martyrdom.
- 20:07I can't stand here today and tell you this.
- 20:09Keep believing in Jesus and love Him.
- 20:12And you'll have no problems in your life.
- 20:14Joel Osteen will tell you that. I can't tell you that.
- 20:16The Bible doesn't tell you that, does it?
- 20:18In the world you will have tribulation, Jesus says, would
- 20:21be of good cheer. I've overcome the world.
- 20:24And so Jesus says, be faithful unto death, and you'll receive
- 20:27the crown. James 112 says blessed is a man
- 20:31who endorsed temptation. For when he has been approved,
- 20:34that means when he's been seen as being faithful, he will
- 20:37receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those
- 20:41who love him. And he promises that these folks
- 20:45in Smyrna, if they endure, when they're tested, he will give
- 20:49them the crown of life and they will not have to deal or be hurt
- 20:55by the second death. Revelation 2040 talks about
- 20:58that. You flip over there.
- 20:59We'll get to that down the road. But 2014, it says the death,
- 21:04then death in Hades, it's the end of time.
- 21:07We're cast into the lake of fire.
- 21:10This is a second death, and anyone not found written in the
- 21:12Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
- 21:17No call to repent in this church.
- 21:19How would you like to be a member of the church in Smyrna?
- 21:22Any hands raised? You'd rather be in Ephesus or
- 21:27Laodicea? They're rich and everything's
- 21:30going great. And Jesus says that you know
- 21:32you're naked and poor, wretched and blind.
- 21:34How many months have joined the Church of Smyrna here?
- 21:37I don't think any of us want to join that church because of what
- 21:40they went through. But look at the promise that God
- 21:42said they're going to have. See the problem with us as
- 21:45humans? We're looking at like the here
- 21:47and now. We need to have a vision of
- 21:49eternity, guys, right? Because all this stuff here
- 21:53today isn't going to last. What's going to last is what's
- 21:58going to be in eternity. Souls, humans, people who are
- 22:02saved, heaven and earth will pass away.
- 22:05But he that does the will of God, the word of God abides
- 22:08forever. I pray though, that we have a
- 22:11kind of heart like Smyrna, though, guys, not Ephesus, but
- 22:14be hot. Be hot for the Lord in the
- 22:18trials that you go through. Let the Lord make you deeper and
- 22:23more faithful and more radical in your commitment and your love
- 22:26for him. And I love the fact that this
- 22:29church wasn't given the admonition of needing to repent.
- 22:31Because when you're in trials, you don't need to repent because
- 22:35you're, you don't, you don't know 1 needs to tell you to
- 22:37repent. You are repenting, right?
- 22:39The first thing that happens when we go through a trial.
- 22:41Is there anything, Lord, in my life that you need to deal with?
- 22:44And if there is, here it is. I give it to you.
- 22:46I want what you want. I don't want my way.
- 22:48I want your way. And, and then man, your, your
- 22:52life as a Christian is astounding.
- 22:54And so God knows when to bring the trials and he knows what
- 22:59he's doing in all of our lives, whether we think he does or not.
- 23:02I don't want to see anybody have to deal with the second death
- 23:06being thrown into the lake of fire and hell forever.
- 23:09If you've never put your faith in Jesus Christ, this is not
- 23:12made-up here. What I'm talking to you guys
- 23:14about this is the word of God. Your soul's weigh in the
- 23:18balance. You hear the gospel, you hear
- 23:20the message, you hear the truth of Jesus Christ.
- 23:23The day is a day of salvation. If you're here today and you've
- 23:26never said, Lord, I'm a Sinner and I need Jesus to be my
- 23:30Savior, Just quietly in your own heart, just let the Lord do
- 23:34that. Let him save you.
- 23:37Just submit to him that you're a Sinner.
- 23:38It's real simple. And that you want him to save
- 23:40you and that's, that's it. And then He'll Holy Spirit comes
- 23:43into you, and He begins to show you the way to walk and makes
- 23:46things clear. We are digging into the Book of
- 23:51Revelation here on Living Waters of Grace.
- 23:53Pastor Clark is tackling this challenging book as we try to
- 23:57discern the messages that are within its pages.
- 24:01There's so much imagery and at times you're not always sure
- 24:05what's literal and what's metaphorical.
- 24:07At one point there's a reference to an adulterous woman riding on
- 24:12a beast. And as someone else mentioned,
- 24:14at one point it almost sounds like a rodeo from hell.
- 24:18And in actuality it kind of is. You learn about the downfall and
- 24:23demise of a sinful and rebellious world, falling down
- 24:27in worship to someone who is the anti hero, the enemy, Satan
- 24:33working his insidious ways into the minds of fallen people.
- 24:38It's sad and it's heartbreaking, but it's a classic story of good
- 24:43versus evil. Thankfully, we know how this
- 24:46story ends. Jesus wins, Jesus reigns, and
- 24:52evil is conquered once and for all.
- 24:56We pray and trust you've received Jesus as your Savior.
- 25:01But if you haven't, don't wait until the events in Revelation
- 25:04become what's happening on the streets.
- 25:07None of us wants you to be there at that time.
- 25:11Instead, we'd love for you to be with us in heaven as we
- 25:15celebrate the marriage supper with Jesus as his bridegroom.
- 25:21To get a better understanding of where we are in the Book of
- 25:24Revelation, to listen to any messages before or after this
- 25:28one, you can find them at our website,
- 25:31calvarychapelonline.com. That's it for today's edition,
- 25:37but we hope you'll want to hear Pastor Clark teach more from the
- 25:40Book of Revelation. It can be exciting to think
- 25:44about the future for believers, but it can feel a bit harrowing
- 25:48for those who don't believe. Come hear more next time on
- 25:51Living Waters of Grace.
