- 0:00Speaker 1: And the fact that he let George come back and
- 0:02Speaker 1: was like, it's cool man, no big deal. No it wasn't. Hey, everybody.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:26Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a lifelong Hallmark movie fan.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm Wendy and I now hate Valentine's Day.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Today we're discussing Welcome to Valentine, the third installment in
- 0:36Speaker 1: Hallmark's Love Youary lineup. If you want to connect with
- 0:39Speaker 1: us outside of the podcast, we would love for you
- 0:41Speaker 1: to follow us on Instagram. We are both at Girls
- 0:44Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark and at Megan and Wendy.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You can also jump into our Facebook group where we
- 0:50Speaker 2: had a big conversation about this movie. It's at Girls
- 0:53Speaker 2: Gone Hallmark on Facebook.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And just a quick reminder that we produce not one,
- 0:57Speaker 1: but two podcasts, so you can also find Wendy and
- 1:01Speaker 1: I at Long Story Short with Megan and Wendy. That's
- 1:04Speaker 1: a women's lifestyle podcast. Would love for you to take
- 1:06Speaker 1: a listen over there. Let's jump into Stump Hallmark News
- 1:11Speaker 1: and Notes. Okay, this is a reach, Okay, but one
- 1:18Speaker 1: of the movies in the March lineup is called The
- 1:20Speaker 1: Love Club Colon Nicole's penpal.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Come to find out that is part of a four
- 1:26Speaker 1: part series. It has already aired in Canada. There are
- 1:30Speaker 1: three other movies. We don't have official release dates on
- 1:33Speaker 1: when Hallmark will be dropping those movies, but much like
- 1:36Speaker 1: the Wedding Veil, it centers around four women and their
- 1:42Speaker 1: stories tie in a little bit.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Are we looking forward to this movie?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Well, I guess I'm going to have to see how
- 1:50Speaker 1: the first one goes. I'm not not looking forward to it.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I mean, Hallmark does love a series, though.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Well, I feel like we're kind of in a lull
- 1:57Speaker 2: for Hallmark right now, Like, yeah, it's like February and March,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and then when we get to Spring and summer, where
- 2:05Speaker 2: like we get going again. But so are we gonna
- 2:08Speaker 2: see like a bunch of acquired movies?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Well you say that, but March's lineup is like Tyler Hines,
- 2:16Speaker 1: Christopher Poulahaw, Paul Campbell. I don't think they're just feeding
- 2:21Speaker 1: a filler right now.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Maybe I just feel like this weekend was filler and
- 2:26Speaker 2: so I'm crouchy about it.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I will remind you that last week's movie you called
- 2:31Speaker 1: one of your top five of all time I.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Still stand by it right now, Okay. Listener Michelle had
- 2:37Speaker 2: commented in our Facebook group that she wondered if I
- 2:41Speaker 2: only really liked it because I am headed to Paris
- 2:44Speaker 2: in the next couple of months, and she might be right,
- 2:47Speaker 2: so right, but I think it was still a great movie.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I still liked it. I will rewatch it in like
- 2:54Speaker 2: six to nine months and see where I am. Like
- 2:56Speaker 2: you said, Hellmark News Real Light right now. A Homemark
- 3:01Speaker 2: Channel movie titled titled spring Breakthrough is filming on the
- 3:04Speaker 2: campus of spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama this month.
- 3:09Speaker 2: According to the Alabama Film Office, Goldman Casting LLC is
- 3:15Speaker 2: seeking background extras for twelve hours of work for one
- 3:19Speaker 2: hundred and twenty five bucks.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Hey, I would do that in a heartbeat if they
- 3:23Speaker 1: were local.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Would you one hundred and twenty five dollars for twelve
- 3:27Speaker 2: hours of like standing around?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 3:29Speaker 2: I guess I would do it for a day just yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 3:33Speaker 2: yeah I might too. I might too.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It would not be doing it for the money. Finally,
- 3:36Speaker 1: a Hallmark, in an effort at cross promotion, has released
- 3:40Speaker 1: a loveary playlist on Spotify. It is called Love Youary.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It has fifteen songs, including songs like Until I Found
- 3:49Speaker 1: You by Steven Sanchez.
- 3:52Speaker 2: That was in the Sweeter than Chocolate. Indeed, Well, here's
- 3:56Speaker 2: a hot tip. They should make a Spotify playlist for
- 3:59Speaker 2: The Way Home, which has had much better music in it, in.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Fact, created by the Hallmark Channel. I know home playlist.
- 4:07Speaker 1: It features only ten songs at this point, but all
- 4:11Speaker 1: the hits that we've heard this year's Love by David Gray,
- 4:14Speaker 1: Summer Girls by LFO, baby one more Time.
- 4:16Speaker 2: There, she goes, that's exciting.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was rewatching those episodes with my daughter last night
- 4:23Speaker 1: and in the scene when they're in the field to
- 4:24Speaker 1: meet Lefo, she goes, what song is that?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Oh God, your teenager would really love that song today?
- 4:32Speaker 1: I think I think she would.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Moving on, let's do a quick synopsis. But do we
- 4:43Speaker 1: need to talk about this synopsis?
- 4:47Speaker 2: Well, I used the one from the Hallmark Channel, which
- 4:53Speaker 2: let me read it, and you can tell me if
- 4:55Speaker 2: this is the one we need to talk about.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:58Speaker 2: After losing her apartment and her job right before Valentine's Day,
- 5:02Speaker 2: Olivia is introduced to George, who takes her on a
- 5:04Speaker 2: cross country road trip that has them reevaluating life's priorities.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Well, I will tell you that Hallmark has edited that.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I just picked it up like yesterday, I think so
- 5:18Speaker 2: in their press release.
- 5:19Speaker 1: First of all, eagleye Hallmark watcher. Mike is our unpaid assistant,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and he had reached out initially regarding the IMDb synopsis
- 5:34Speaker 1: because the IMDb synopsis says something odd. And then I
- 5:39Speaker 1: looked at the Hallmark Channel press release for this movie
- 5:42Speaker 1: and it says something similar. It's a week away from
- 5:45Speaker 1: Valentine's Day and Olivia loses both her boyfriend and her
- 5:50Speaker 1: job in the same week.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Oh interesting, Yes, And then.
- 5:58Speaker 1: There's more. George agrees to take Olivia to her destination
- 6:02Speaker 1: in exchange for a free night's stay in her hometown. Oh,
- 6:06Speaker 1: never part of the discussion. Since she's low on Cashi
- 6:09Speaker 1: agrees to take turns driving so he can get to
- 6:12Speaker 1: Los Angeles in under five days. There's never that discussion.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The two strangers set out on the open road, both
- 6:19Speaker 1: on their way to being who they think they're supposed
- 6:21Speaker 1: to be. This is to me a different movie than
- 6:24Speaker 1: what we saw.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Do you think, oh, this is kind of like what
- 6:29Speaker 2: came first, The Chicken or the Egg. Do you think
- 6:32Speaker 2: like the synopsis came first? And the movie turned out
- 6:36Speaker 2: totally different, or do you think they cut some stuff
- 6:39Speaker 2: out of the movie.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I have to assume things were cut from the movie.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Because there was never talk of her having a boyfriend, right, no, no, never, yeah, yeah, all.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Right, let's do some news and notes.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Okay. This movie was previously titled Valentine Nebraska, uh until
- 7:01Speaker 2: recently actually, because when we wrote our preview on our
- 7:07Speaker 2: website Magano Windy dot com, we have it titled as
- 7:10Speaker 2: Valentine Nebraska.
- 7:13Speaker 1: So this movie was set in the actual town of Valentine, Nebraska,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but it was filmed in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
- 7:23Speaker 2: During December, which you can tell like it's very cold,
- 7:26Speaker 2: like you can see especially tying the parade, like the
- 7:30Speaker 2: townspeople are bundled up. Maybe that's why they're a parade
- 7:35Speaker 2: only consisted of one float.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I liked the parade.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Oh get out, Oh my god, stop you did not?
- 7:42Speaker 1: I did?
- 7:43Speaker 2: I have so many problems with it, oh god, oh god.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So this movie has a lot of Hallmark newcomers involved,
- 7:49Speaker 1: including or Stephen Brogrin. He has fifteen directing credits, lots
- 7:53Speaker 1: of de grassy mm hmm, and then Lifetime movie style
- 7:57Speaker 1: titles like Obsessed to death, and he does have a
- 7:59Speaker 1: Christmas be titled A Chance for Christmas, but that wasn't
- 8:03Speaker 1: Hallmark right, indeed, it was not right.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Writer. The writers of this movie are total newcomers as well,
- 8:11Speaker 2: Jin Bashian and Stephanie abel Horowitz. Jin Bascian, I hope
- 8:18Speaker 2: I'm saying her last name correct is known for improv
- 8:21Speaker 2: and sketch comedy, and she has two other writing credits
- 8:24Speaker 2: on her IMDb, including a short called This Remains in
- 8:28Speaker 2: a to B original movie called Frankie Meets Jack starring
- 8:32Speaker 2: Joey Lawrence and The Dearly Departed, and hash Yes Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Both Jen Bascian and Stephanie abel Horowitz both have a
- 8:42Speaker 1: number of non writing credits. As you mentioned, Jen has
- 8:46Speaker 1: fourteen acting credits and Stephanie has nine director credits, so
- 8:49Speaker 1: they're just getting their writer feet wet right. And Stephanie
- 8:52Speaker 1: abel Horrowitz, she has She's written a couple of shorts
- 8:56Speaker 1: and an episode of a Disney Plus show called launch.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Pad, which I haven't heard. We watch on the Disney
- 9:01Speaker 2: Plus around here, but I haven't heard of this show,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and a movie called Sometimes They Think About Dyane, which
- 9:06Speaker 2: has really decent IMDb reviews Oh yeah, it's about like depression.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Our lead actors are not new to Hallmark. Catherine Davis,
- 9:16Speaker 2: who plays lead Olivia, has twenty three acting credits, including
- 9:19Speaker 2: Hallmark's A Christmas Carousel, and lead actor Marcian Tarciuk, if
- 9:28Speaker 2: we're saying it rictly, please reach out, he has twenty
- 9:30Speaker 2: nine acting credits, including very recently Christmas at the Golden
- 9:34Speaker 2: Dragon are Italian Christmas Memories, as well as a role
- 9:38Speaker 2: in the Hannon Swinson Mysteries being revived. In twenty twenty three,
- 9:43Speaker 2: I read an article that he described this movie Welcome
- 9:47Speaker 2: to Valentine as quote Harry, when Harry meets Sally with
- 9:50Speaker 2: a Southern American flair. Huh huh is right?
- 9:56Speaker 1: What's your first impression of Welcome to Valentine?
- 9:59Speaker 2: My first this impression is goodbye.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Yeah, impression is miss Hacky sucks.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Who's miss Hacky the old lady villain?
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yes?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Oh god, jeez, Louise, Okay, I want to just before
- 10:19Speaker 2: we get into it, I just want to say that
- 10:23Speaker 2: I have given a lot of thought about reviewing this movie,
- 10:26Speaker 2: and some of our listeners of this podcast have come
- 10:31Speaker 2: back with critiques that we can sometimes be too hard
- 10:35Speaker 2: on movies where people work really hard on and so
- 10:39Speaker 2: on and so forth, right, So I just please take
- 10:45Speaker 2: that into consideration. I have given this movie and my
- 10:49Speaker 2: notes a lot of thought. I don't want to come
- 10:51Speaker 2: in and like bash it completely because I know there
- 10:55Speaker 2: are a lot of people that spend a lot of
- 10:57Speaker 2: money and take a lot of time and heart and
- 11:00Speaker 2: soul and whatever to make these movies.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I hear you, and I think that's a great point.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I have also thought about this movie. Here's what I
- 11:08Speaker 1: don't like. I don't like watching a movie, and as
- 11:11Speaker 1: I watch it, I know that I'm not going to
- 11:13Speaker 1: be able to read about this movie. M I feel
- 11:16Speaker 1: like I'd rather just skip it, right. Yeah, So, yes,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I acknowledged that this was the product of a lot
- 11:23Speaker 1: of hard work from a lot of people, and I
- 11:26Speaker 1: think sometimes what happens if you look at that synopsis,
- 11:30Speaker 1: it seems clear to me that things were cut from
- 11:33Speaker 1: this movie and this perhaps was not the movie that
- 11:36Speaker 1: any one person intended.
- 11:38Speaker 2: To make, but was maybe a compromise I see, or
- 11:43Speaker 2: maybe it was just really rushed and getting to market.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Perhaps, so let's talk about what we did.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Like, Okay, I'm gonna start the supporting cast stood out
- 11:53Speaker 2: to me. Oh, did I steal your thunder? So sorry,
- 11:57Speaker 2: specifically Sophie Bistelle, who plays roommate Tess, and she gives
- 12:03Speaker 2: one of the best lines in the movie, which I
- 12:04Speaker 2: am going to mention in a few minutes. Also, mechanic
- 12:09Speaker 2: toe truck driver Ronald I thought was very funny.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 12:14Speaker 2: And finally, the young actor Bagan Hoffman, who plays Mickey
- 12:20Speaker 2: I enjoyed quite a bit. And I have a question
- 12:22Speaker 2: for you.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Did you know that the actor who plays Mickey also
- 12:28Speaker 2: plays young Danny in The Way Home?
- 12:32Speaker 1: No?
- 12:33Speaker 2: Yes, oh, yes? And I wanted to ask your opinion.
- 12:40Speaker 2: How old do you think Mickey's character was supposed to be.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good question.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Eight. I thought he played much younger.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Uh huh.
- 12:50Speaker 2: And I wondered if you thought this character could have
- 12:55Speaker 2: possibly be been written as neuro divergent. Oh, interesting, it
- 13:01Speaker 2: was never mentioned.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I don't think that isn't the case.
- 13:06Speaker 2: It was just an observation I.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Placed to work on is Valentine's I enjoyed the character
- 13:14Speaker 1: of Mickey actually quite a bit. I agree with you
- 13:17Speaker 1: on the supporting cast. I also liked Andrea Davis as
- 13:22Speaker 1: Barbara May, Kara Duncans, Vanessa. Here's what I think about
- 13:27Speaker 1: the supporting cast versus the lead actors. I really liked
- 13:32Speaker 1: Catherine Davis, who plays Olivia in this movie. The problem,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I think is that so much of this movie is
- 13:38Speaker 1: about or supposed to be about her budding romance, and
- 13:44Speaker 1: I wasn't sold on that relationship, right, I didn't believe it,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and so I think that obviously reflects on my feelings
- 13:54Speaker 1: about her. But I really enjoyed her. I think she's
- 13:58Speaker 1: cute as hell. I just think that the relationship chemistry
- 14:03Speaker 1: wasn't there for me. And I think George is kind
- 14:09Speaker 1: of a jerk in this movie, you think intentionally, right, Yeah,
- 14:14Speaker 1: that's the character description, and he doesn't break out of
- 14:20Speaker 1: it soon enough or often enough for me to buy
- 14:25Speaker 1: into him.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Right. I have some thoughts on that in my wish
- 14:28Speaker 2: for category.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And so I like the characters, the supporting characters more
- 14:35Speaker 1: than the lead characters. Not so much a reflection on
- 14:39Speaker 1: the acting, right, but I cared more about the supporting.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Characters one hundred percent. I feel the same way I.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Loved the cute onnth wardrobe in this movie, Like if
- 14:51Speaker 1: you're making a Valentine movie. Make a Valentine movie the
- 14:53Speaker 1: same way our Christmas movies have everyone in an ugly
- 14:56Speaker 1: sweater at one point and everyone drinking hot chocolate. Particularly
- 14:59Speaker 1: or Olivia's wardrobe was just like a week long Valentine
- 15:03Speaker 1: Day fashion show. I really enjoyed it. It didn't feel
- 15:07Speaker 1: twee or precious to me. M M. I just thought
- 15:11Speaker 1: she looks great.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I didn't even notice it, and That's something I really noticed,
- 15:16Speaker 2: especially in a movie that I don't particularly like, because
- 15:18Speaker 2: I'm searching for something to like about it. I liked
- 15:23Speaker 2: Olivia's art, and I thought the rendering of Big Red
- 15:27Speaker 2: was quite cool. I thought that was neat, and then
- 15:30Speaker 2: I thought, oh, I wonder if I can commission somebody
- 15:33Speaker 2: to like because my dad has cars like that. I
- 15:35Speaker 2: wonder if I could commission somebody to draw something like
- 15:37Speaker 2: that for my dad. But then I thought, I wonder
- 15:39Speaker 2: if they just made it in Canva, you know, like
- 15:42Speaker 2: pixelated it, or did something.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I really was like, was there an AI like draw
- 15:47Speaker 1: this car in this style? I wondered that too, But
- 15:50Speaker 1: you can definitely commission.
- 15:53Speaker 2: I know, isn't that a good idea?
- 15:55Speaker 1: You really should remember I did that one for my parents.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Yes, exactly, I hadn't seen my.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Yeah, same artists. Who's a friend of ours? I was
- 16:04Speaker 1: wondering settings on Etsy. I bet she would do a
- 16:06Speaker 1: car I don't know.
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'll have to reach out to her.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:11Speaker 2: In this movie, there were some lines that definitely had
- 16:14Speaker 2: me laugh out loud. One of them was while George
- 16:19Speaker 2: and Olivia during their first meeting at the art gallery,
- 16:23Speaker 2: they were talking about artists and he goes nice nerdy
- 16:26Speaker 2: name drop.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I enjoyed that.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Also, during that same time, they were her roommate and
- 16:32Speaker 2: Olivia were checking out the hot guys and they referenced
- 16:35Speaker 2: one of the guys as Dreadlock Denzel, which I thought
- 16:38Speaker 2: was quite funny, and he is credited as such on IMDb.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I saw that. I loved that.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And finally, when Olivia and George were talking about Valentine,
- 16:49Speaker 2: Nebraska and George says something about like DJ Cupid's been
- 16:53Speaker 2: in some sick beats tonight, it made me laugh. I
- 16:57Speaker 2: felt that there were there were some I'm like fresh,
- 17:03Speaker 2: I don't want to say like fresh language, but like
- 17:08Speaker 2: have we heard the word sick? And I'm a Hallmark
- 17:11Speaker 2: movie right, Dreadlocked Denzel, Like if.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Some Denzel was great, laughed out loud, wrote it down.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Right right, all right? I have one more, okay, and
- 17:21Speaker 2: it has to go back to the actors. You enjoyed,
- 17:25Speaker 2: Catherine Davis. I enjoyed actor Mark Ian oh Man, tarsiic
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh Tartari. Yeah, sorry. I liked him in the two
- 17:36Speaker 2: movies from Christmas, and every time I see him, I go.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Oh, is that Jeremy Jordan.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I'd like to.
- 17:42Speaker 2: See those two in a movie where they play brothers
- 17:45Speaker 2: because I feel nice they look very much alike.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Oh I I feel a fake movie poster coming on, like.
- 17:52Speaker 2: That idea brothers in love, Ooster, there's in love, a
- 18:01Speaker 2: national park romance. Let's talk about what we wished for.
- 18:06Speaker 1: There was not nearly enough road trip in this road
- 18:08Speaker 1: trip movie for me. Oh god, see.
- 18:10Speaker 2: That's what I worry about, that there's gonna be too
- 18:12Speaker 2: much green screen and a road trip movie because.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We've seen it. Sure, sure there want to see a
- 18:17Speaker 1: well done road trip. Let me tell you here's what
- 18:20Speaker 1: ruined it for me. When he said no food or
- 18:22Speaker 1: drink in the car, I was mad. I was like,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I don't want to ride in a car without a snack.
- 18:26Speaker 1: That's the only enjoyable part about a road trip is
- 18:29Speaker 1: wearing your comfy clothes, sit in the car and eating
- 18:31Speaker 1: snacks the entire time.
- 18:32Speaker 2: I can't even imagine road tripping in that car because
- 18:35Speaker 2: I'm sure it doesn't have a shoulder belt. It's probably
- 18:37Speaker 2: just a lap seat belt. In that car, it probably
- 18:39Speaker 2: has no radio, it doesn't have serious ExM. You can't
- 18:43Speaker 2: plug in.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Your phone, and it's you know, it's loud as hell
- 18:47Speaker 1: to know.
- 18:50Speaker 2: It's not a comfortable ride. No, I would agree die.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Climb in when it's your turn to sit in the
- 18:55Speaker 1: back seat of that car and.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Clip over the over the sea. Oh my gosh, oh
- 19:01Speaker 2: my goodness for me, I thought, and you mentioned this before.
- 19:06Speaker 2: The two lead characters, and let me be clear, characters
- 19:10Speaker 2: not actors, were super unlikable to me. I was not
- 19:14Speaker 2: rooting for them at all. You have to give me
- 19:18Speaker 2: something redeemable that makes me want these two characters to
- 19:21Speaker 2: be together. And if I could throw it back to
- 19:25Speaker 2: last week's of Paris Proposal, that movie started out where
- 19:29Speaker 2: the male character was a little like, not very nice, right,
- 19:36Speaker 2: but he ends up redeeming himself because you know, he's
- 19:41Speaker 2: got this other family stuff going on. But then he
- 19:43Speaker 2: like is vulnerable with the lead actress and like there's
- 19:46Speaker 2: this whole like then you end up rooting for them
- 19:49Speaker 2: this movie. George is like a super tool, especially when
- 19:55Speaker 2: he unloads on Ronald for the like mistake of the
- 19:59Speaker 2: jumper case bulls or whatever.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yes, was so out of line.
- 20:05Speaker 2: I would have been like, pound sand dude, you're on
- 20:07Speaker 2: your own, Like, get out of my driveway. There's no
- 20:11Speaker 2: way he was such an asshole.
- 20:14Speaker 1: One hundred percent agree.
- 20:19Speaker 2: I thought Olivia was quite bitchy. Okay, so like their
- 20:23Speaker 2: like bans together wasn't even like fun to watch. It
- 20:26Speaker 2: was just like mean jabs at each other, and I
- 20:28Speaker 2: was like, oh, these two people hate each other.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Poke poke yeah, yikes to me. At one point, I
- 20:35Speaker 1: had the thought that I have occasionally watching Hallmark movies
- 20:38Speaker 1: is that they've been put into like a random Hallmark
- 20:40Speaker 1: movie generator and then they just spit out like an
- 20:43Speaker 1: AI generated list of tropes. It felt like they were like, well,
- 20:49Speaker 1: here's what we need. We need a small town girl
- 20:51Speaker 1: in the big city who's struggling, and we need a
- 20:54Speaker 1: dude who is expected to take over the family business,
- 20:57Speaker 1: but that's really not what's in his heart. And while
- 21:00Speaker 1: all of those things are fine. None of them, to me,
- 21:04Speaker 1: were fully developed enough to make me care about any
- 21:07Speaker 1: of them.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I liked Olivia's art when we see that car. I
- 21:12Speaker 1: needed to see more of Olivia working as an artist.
- 21:15Speaker 1: All I knew was the struggle, right, she didn't want
- 21:18Speaker 1: anybody to look at her art. She wasn't successful as
- 21:21Speaker 1: an artist. But show me her being an artist, make
- 21:25Speaker 1: me believe it. I just wanted something to care about.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I cared again more about the lives of the supporting characters.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I kind of wanted Olivia to end up with Ronald
- 21:34Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Oh really yeah, because they have history, right, you know.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And he's a nice dude, and the fact that he
- 21:41Speaker 1: let George come back and was like it's cool man,
- 21:43Speaker 1: no big deal. No, it wasn't cool, man. I agree.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Like they were like when they went to the get
- 21:50Speaker 2: milkshakes or whatever, it was like too. They were growing
- 21:54Speaker 2: out one hundred percent, and I enjoyed that. I was like,
- 21:57Speaker 2: here's the smallest part of this movie that I kind
- 21:59Speaker 2: of like, like these two together, sure, but like George
- 22:04Speaker 2: just treated Ronald like shit. Like George prior to that moment, no.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Say something potentially problematic sure. I think there is a
- 22:17Speaker 1: problematic portrayal in this movie when you look at the
- 22:24Speaker 1: relationship that the people of color have in this movie
- 22:27Speaker 1: to other characters.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Go ahead, I'm listening. I hear what you're I feel
- 22:32Speaker 2: what you're gonna put down.
- 22:34Speaker 1: For example, the Ronald getting yelled at scene made me
- 22:37Speaker 1: really uncomfortable. Felt like a.
- 22:40Speaker 2: White man yelling at a person of color who was
- 22:43Speaker 2: helping him out.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Yes, you need to help him. Yes, miss Hackeye overseeing
- 22:48Speaker 1: the work that Vanessa was doing and telling her she
- 22:53Speaker 1: was doing it wrong and essentially telling her she shouldn't
- 22:56Speaker 1: be the one doing it, and ultimately sabotaging the work
- 22:59Speaker 1: that she was doing. I would have felt differently about
- 23:03Speaker 1: that character perhaps if we weren't looking at a troubling
- 23:09Speaker 1: skin color dynamic in Yes, Yes, I absolutely agree that way. Yep.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I thought so too while watching it, and I was like,
- 23:17Speaker 2: I don't know how thank you for putting it into words,
- 23:19Speaker 2: because I didn't know how to quite I.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Don't know that it got well. It just made me
- 23:23Speaker 1: uncomfortable to watch, and it put, quite frankly, the white
- 23:28Speaker 1: people in this movie in positions of power that they
- 23:31Speaker 1: had not earned. Yes, and I did not enjoy the
- 23:36Speaker 1: way that made me feel, or the way it looks great.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Great take, I feel the same way in a sharp
- 23:43Speaker 2: left turn. I'm just going to tell you that I
- 23:44Speaker 2: could not get excited for a Valentine's Day parade that
- 23:47Speaker 2: consisted of one float, some dollar store decorations, and a
- 23:51Speaker 2: villain who was pissed that she was replaced after thirty years.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I wo those dogs on that float were real cute.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I was impressed.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Okay, dog's fine, fine, ain't but they, oh my god,
- 24:01Speaker 2: when they were she was like setting up the lighting
- 24:05Speaker 2: and they were all excited to do their like big
- 24:07Speaker 2: lighting thing, literally is paper decorations on this like scaffolding,
- 24:12Speaker 2: and then they turn on one string of lights and
- 24:14Speaker 2: they're like, oh I.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Did need more lights in them. Ugh.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It just was poor execution, I thought.
- 24:21Speaker 1: But you know, it's the equivalent of the town Christmas
- 24:23Speaker 1: tree lighting when the Christmas tree is the size of
- 24:25Speaker 1: the one in my living room.
- 24:26Speaker 2: I know, I get it if you're telling me this
- 24:29Speaker 2: is their big thing that like Christmas is just a
- 24:33Speaker 2: warm up to Valentine's Day, and this is it. It is
- 24:37Speaker 2: a fail. Let's talk about did you see that I
- 24:40Speaker 2: have two things, One actual did you see that? And
- 24:44Speaker 2: one I'm annoyed by this comment.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Okay, you go first. Well, I did a little Google
- 24:51Speaker 1: Maps work. The drive from New York City to Valentine,
- 24:54Speaker 1: Nebraska would be a twenty two hour drive that assumes
- 24:57Speaker 1: no stopping. Wow, we never see Olivia driving. We only
- 25:02Speaker 1: ever see George driving. Be We never see them like
- 25:05Speaker 1: stop for a hotel, because then they'd have this weird like,
- 25:08Speaker 1: oh one room or two, I have no money, how
- 25:10Speaker 1: are we going to do this? We never see them
- 25:12Speaker 1: stopping for a meal. Did they drive through the night.
- 25:15Speaker 1: George drove twenty four hours straight without a break, never
- 25:18Speaker 1: letting Olivia drive his precious car. I needed some more
- 25:22Speaker 1: of the logistics there of what was going on.
- 25:24Speaker 2: They just want us to call that stuff. Yes, you're
- 25:27Speaker 2: just hoping people don't understand geography and.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Know much over a green screen, Get that out of
- 25:32Speaker 1: the car and move on.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, I have one. There was a Pride flag
- 25:36Speaker 2: hanging on a coffee shop in the downtown area Valentine,
- 25:39Speaker 2: which I thought was pretty distincing.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Cool.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Obviously that was not actually Valentine, Nebraska, but you know, Ontario, Canada,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and I'm annoyed by this next little bit of dialogue.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I'm sure nobody else caught it, but here it is.
- 25:58Speaker 2: George has big at the shop where Ronald was like
- 26:02Speaker 2: looking it over, and George says, tell me the name
- 26:06Speaker 2: of another body shop. And as a girl who grew
- 26:08Speaker 2: up in the body shop business, family owned body shop business,
- 26:13Speaker 2: a body shop makes repairs to the body of the car,
- 26:20Speaker 2: whereas a mechanic makes repairs to the engine. So he
- 26:24Speaker 2: should have been like, give me another mechanic or another whatever,
- 26:27Speaker 2: not another body shop. It just drives me crazy. And
- 26:30Speaker 2: I know nobody else caught it, but body shops now
- 26:35Speaker 2: have a bad stigma from years and years and years back.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And I'm just here to tell you, Oh interesting, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 2: because there's that whole idea that body shops are made
- 26:46Speaker 2: up of, you know, uneducated men who hang naked calendars
- 26:53Speaker 2: up in their workspace, you know what I mean. And
- 26:56Speaker 2: it's just not like that. I'm here to tell you
- 26:58Speaker 2: it's just not like that. Please google the details and
- 27:02Speaker 2: get it right.
- 27:03Speaker 1: However, there is zero chance that Ronald the town mechanic,
- 27:07Speaker 1: is going to screw up the placement of the jumper cables.
- 27:10Speaker 2: No, but I mean in that moment if he was distracted. Sure,
- 27:15Speaker 2: anybody can make that kind of error, But you're right,
- 27:18Speaker 2: Ronald's not gonna mess it up. All right.
- 27:21Speaker 1: What did you rate this movie?
- 27:23Speaker 2: I gave it one star?
- 27:24Speaker 1: Oh I gave it to why why? I mean recording characters?
- 27:31Speaker 2: Oh, I gave it. I gave it one for them. Okay, sorry,
- 27:35Speaker 2: I'm sorry. Now next week it looks like we're gonna
- 27:38Speaker 2: get a remake of the nineteen eighty seven movie Mannequin.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I swear to you. I'm watching the preview and I
- 27:44Speaker 1: was like, it's Hallmark making Mannequin seriously, right, which, by
- 27:48Speaker 1: the way, love that movie.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I hope, I hope it's good. I do do.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I'm so nervous.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I mean, let's see Clay come to life.
- 28:00Speaker 1: And The Way Home is back this week, so we
- 28:02Speaker 1: will be back with a recap of episode five of
- 28:05Speaker 1: The Way Home tomorrow. Thank you for listening to this
- 28:08Speaker 1: episode of Girls Gone Hallmark. If you enjoy these episodes,
- 28:12Speaker 1: we'd love for you to leave us a five star
- 28:13Speaker 1: rating and a review, and we will be back tomorrow
- 28:16Speaker 1: with another episode. Thanks for listening. Bye bye, h
