- 0:01Speaker 1: On that note, which is not to satisfy, but on
- 0:04Speaker 1: that note, do you feel that Zoe and John had
- 0:08Speaker 1: actual feelings for each other or was the Manhunter versus
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Green Lantern.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Stroke game just an all time classic? And what's up, y'all?
- 0:29Speaker 2: And welcome to another.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Episode of the For All Nerds show.
- 0:32Speaker 2: As you know, we are always bringing you the heat.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And tonight is no exception because we have the one
- 0:39Speaker 1: and only Justin Britt Gibson in the spaceship tonight. Temple
- 0:44Speaker 1: University graduate, major writing credits on The Strain, Into the Badlands, Counterpart, Banshee,
- 0:51Speaker 1: a gold medalist in the men's freestyle, Muscle Twirl.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Mustache twirl.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Mustache twirl.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Not muscle. I mean, maybe muscle too, you know? You
- 1:02Speaker 1: don't know. You don't hear no weights out there. But
- 1:05Speaker 1: you probably know him as the co-executive producer and the
- 1:09Speaker 1: writer on one of the biggest and blackest shows that
- 1:13Speaker 1: ever hit HBO, Lanterns.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Welcome to the spaceship, Justin.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Thank you, y'all. Thank you. Beam me up. Beam me in. Aubrey,
- 1:22Speaker 4: I'll do it. Let's do it. I'm ready. All right.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, thank you for joining us.
- 1:27Speaker 1: You know, I, right off the bat, we're fresh off
- 1:31Speaker 1: episode six, which you co-wrote with, you know, friend of
- 1:34Speaker 1: the show, Damon Lindelof. It's titled bad optics, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and speaking of bad optics, did you feel your black
- 1:42Speaker 1: heart slipping away when you wrote a white woman asking
- 1:45Speaker 1: a black man for reparations?
- 1:49Speaker 4: Oh man. Uh, I did not feel my heart slipping away.
- 1:53Speaker 4: I felt like I had to write it, man. Like
- 1:54Speaker 4: that just felt like, you know, I just felt like that.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I just, we, we all felt like that was the
- 2:00Speaker 4: appropriate line for the scene, especially because the line before was,
- 2:04Speaker 4: we're not all, we're not racist, John, you know? And
- 2:07Speaker 4: so it's that moment of like, Oh, putting someone at
- 2:09Speaker 4: ease and then just throwing it right back, you know?
- 2:11Speaker 4: And just like, I love a show where a character
- 2:14Speaker 4: keeps you guessing, you know? Um, And Maggie was one
- 2:17Speaker 4: of those characters we were just like, what if we
- 2:19Speaker 4: did this with this character? And the thing about characters
- 2:24Speaker 4: on those, like what you would call like a supporting character,
- 2:27Speaker 4: sort of like whatever, someone in the background. And this
- 2:29Speaker 4: is such a credit to Damon and the team is
- 2:33Speaker 4: this idea of like characters that you think have nothing
- 2:36Speaker 4: to do with the show. So, in episode five, she's
- 2:40Speaker 4: a little girl with the watch. And it just sort
- 2:45Speaker 4: of feels like this throwaway scene where John's being this
- 2:47Speaker 4: sort of like, you know, after all of the devastation
- 2:50Speaker 4: that he and Hal brought to Rushville, he sort of
- 2:52Speaker 4: apologizes to her. And it was like, how do we
- 2:56Speaker 4: make that character important and matter to the actual show?
- 3:00Speaker 4: And so bringing her full circle into episode six was
- 3:04Speaker 4: the great solution to that. And yeah, I mean, I
- 3:07Speaker 4: always love writing scenes like that. I know maybe that
- 3:09Speaker 4: sounds crazy to some people, but when you've had as
- 3:12Speaker 4: many experiences as we all have had, it's like, you
- 3:14Speaker 4: have to, you got to write the truth. Right. You know,
- 3:18Speaker 4: I've heard people say shit like that before, you know
- 3:20Speaker 4: what I mean? So that's like, I'm not making this up,
- 3:22Speaker 4: you know? And so to me, it was just like, like,
- 3:27Speaker 4: if you're not, if you're not writing the truth, what
- 3:28Speaker 4: are you writing? You know, in any scene, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 4: I think it's really important. So I, and I give
- 3:34Speaker 4: credit to, you know, I give credit to everybody for
- 3:37Speaker 4: embracing that, you know, because yeah, I think a lot
- 3:40Speaker 4: of times, you know, you look at old TV shows
- 3:42Speaker 4: and it's like characters talk a certain way and it,
- 3:46Speaker 4: you know, it's not to say that the show wasn't good,
- 3:48Speaker 4: but sometimes it may not have felt honest, you know? And,
- 3:53Speaker 4: you know, it's 2026, these characters have evolved and just
- 3:57Speaker 4: because she says that doesn't necessarily mean she's racist either,
- 4:00Speaker 4: you know what I mean? She might just be fucking
- 4:01Speaker 4: with John, you know? So that's what I like about
- 4:05Speaker 4: writing is just like getting in these people's heads, you
- 4:08Speaker 4: know what I mean?
- 4:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 4: My first experience was on a show called Deadwood. I
- 4:13Speaker 4: was a writer's apprentice for this guy, David Milch, who
- 4:16Speaker 4: is this big TV legend. And he did NYPD Blue,
- 4:20Speaker 4: Hill Street Blues, big time guy. And he said something
- 4:24Speaker 4: to me that I'll never forget. And he said, you
- 4:27Speaker 4: got to put the character shoes on, you know, and
- 4:30Speaker 4: if you can put the character shoes on, forget about structure,
- 4:33Speaker 4: forget about anything. They'll tell you where to go, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 4: and so. That always stuck with me. So whenever I
- 4:40Speaker 4: enter any scene, that's the first thing I do. I
- 4:41Speaker 4: try to put this character shoes on. That's how I
- 4:43Speaker 4: start walking through the scene.
- 4:46Speaker 2: That is a bar.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Let me tell you, all the writers out there, my
- 4:50Speaker 1: man just dropped.
- 4:52Speaker 2: That is something to hear right there. So pay attention.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 4:57Speaker 5: And I really like that you mentioned the truth and
- 4:59Speaker 5: honesty a lot. And I found that very interesting because
- 5:02Speaker 5: at any point, does anyone tell the truth in this series?
- 5:05Speaker 5: Like it's the lies, the lies, the lies everywhere.
- 5:08Speaker 3: And I'm tired.
- 5:09Speaker 4: So.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I mean, and, and, and to your point, I could
- 5:13Speaker 3: put myself in the character shoes, right?
- 5:14Speaker 5: Like even just from a point of view perspective, you know,
- 5:17Speaker 5: from John's standpoint, like this is mentally, emotionally exhausting.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Everybody's a liar, including himself, but everybody's a.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Liar from the viewer standpoint. You know, it's, it's, it's cinema, right?
- 5:26Speaker 5: You know, it keeps our head on a swivel. It's, it's,
- 5:28Speaker 5: it's entertaining.
- 5:29Speaker 3: The mystery threads are there, but as we're watching, like,
- 5:33Speaker 3: are we supposed to.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Believe what we're seeing in terms of like, if we're John,
- 5:36Speaker 5: is he our point of view or is it some
- 5:39Speaker 5: from some other direction?
- 5:40Speaker 4: I mean, that's, that's a really good question. I mean, I,
- 5:44Speaker 4: I can only speak for myself because, you know, of
- 5:47Speaker 4: my own experience on the show, but, but, but to me,
- 5:50Speaker 4: John was always the point of view of the show,
- 5:52Speaker 4: you know, it's like, you know, this is, I mean,
- 5:56Speaker 4: because of, because of the way the story is sort
- 5:59Speaker 4: of being structured as it is. And every John is
- 6:02Speaker 4: pretty much in every scene, um, I would say there's
- 6:07Speaker 4: an argument to be made that he is the sort
- 6:11Speaker 4: of lens through which we see all this. Sort of
- 6:14Speaker 4: like the journey. And I think that's also credited to
- 6:16Speaker 4: the audience feeling so drawn and connected to him. I
- 6:19Speaker 4: think there are obviously people who might feel like it's
- 6:24Speaker 4: Hal's show. And that's also fair too because there's a
- 6:29Speaker 4: way to look at it where is it like, is
- 6:32Speaker 4: it sort of Hal speaking from is it Hal sort
- 6:36Speaker 4: of remembering all this stuff? There's a whole bunch of
- 6:38Speaker 4: ways to read it. But to me personally, like this
- 6:41Speaker 4: was always sort of like this, well, it was a two-hander,
- 6:45Speaker 4: but a two-hander probably a little more from the perspective
- 6:49Speaker 4: of John than it was from Hal.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Speaking of John and Hal, like there's a lot of
- 6:55Speaker 6: connection between how both of them are moving and the
- 6:57Speaker 6: decisions that they make, which kind of makes sense with
- 6:59Speaker 6: both of them being recruited to be Green Lanterns. But,
- 7:03Speaker 6: So specifically, we see during his interview with The Guardian
- 7:06Speaker 6: and his phone call with his brothers that John seems
- 7:10Speaker 6: to like never quite have felt at home. And given
- 7:13Speaker 6: what we know about Hal and his life and now death,
- 7:16Speaker 6: that there's like a sort of loneliness and isolation that
- 7:19Speaker 6: ties both characters together. Should we think about that as
- 7:23Speaker 6: like what comes with living fearlessly? Or is this a
- 7:25Speaker 6: characteristic that you think that applies to Green Lanterns only?
- 7:29Speaker 6: Or perhaps maybe just characters living similarly?
- 7:33Speaker 4: I think it could be all of the above, you know?
- 7:35Speaker 4: I mean, to me, I think there's definitely an argument
- 7:39Speaker 4: to be made about what it is to be a
- 7:42Speaker 4: Green Lantern, right? Because it's sort of like, you know,
- 7:44Speaker 4: from the beginning, Hal has sort of said, look, this
- 7:46Speaker 4: is all about, you know, I think it was episode
- 7:48Speaker 4: four where he talks about no attachments, right? And this
- 7:51Speaker 4: idea of like, this is, the job is everything and
- 7:54Speaker 4: everything else falls away and sort of this idea that,
- 7:57Speaker 4: you know, that this isn't a job for someone who
- 8:00Speaker 4: wants a family or someone who wants to like, carry
- 8:03Speaker 4: on in a relationship. I mean, it wasn't until, uh,
- 8:06Speaker 4: how it went back to look Rushville and lost the
- 8:08Speaker 4: ring that he even had some semblance of that with Carrie.
- 8:11Speaker 4: And he obviously had a previous relationship, uh, prior to
- 8:15Speaker 4: our story beginning, uh, with, with Carol Ferris, but that was,
- 8:18Speaker 4: that was, that was the past, you know, and that
- 8:20Speaker 4: didn't work out as we saw when we went, when
- 8:22Speaker 4: we went to the funeral scene and, um, and, and
- 8:24Speaker 4: bad optics. And so, um, I definitely think there's an
- 8:28Speaker 4: argument to be made that this isolation is something that
- 8:31Speaker 4: it's something you accept, you know, it was kind of like,
- 8:33Speaker 4: What is it? One of the best movies about this
- 8:36Speaker 4: idea of the job and the acceptance of isolation is heat. Right.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Where De Niro is like, you know, you know, no attachments.
- 8:44Speaker 4: You know, it's just it's a it's a samurai life.
- 8:46Speaker 4: You know, I think the same is sort of applicable
- 8:49Speaker 4: to being a lantern or any superhero for that matter.
- 8:52Speaker 4: You know, I mean, think about Peter Parker. You know,
- 8:54Speaker 4: I mean, this is a guy who. basically had to
- 8:58Speaker 4: in the latest movie is sort of still reckoning with
- 9:00Speaker 4: the fact that he had to erase the entire world's
- 9:03Speaker 4: memory so that they wouldn't know who he really is
- 9:05Speaker 4: because he's trying to protect his friends. You know, that's
- 9:07Speaker 4: going to make you lonely. You know, Superman. I mean,
- 9:11Speaker 4: look at Batman. I mean, everybody is pretty much isolated
- 9:15Speaker 4: in some shape or form in this genre. And I
- 9:18Speaker 4: think that that sort of opens the doors of a
- 9:20Speaker 4: sort of conversation of like, what are the sort of
- 9:22Speaker 4: like with with all this with all this power, but
- 9:26Speaker 4: what are the side effects of that? And what is
- 9:29Speaker 4: it that I lose in the process of protecting everybody,
- 9:32Speaker 4: you know? So yeah, definitely there is a, I think
- 9:36Speaker 4: that's well observed and, you know, I think isolation is
- 9:40Speaker 4: a theme that I think you could, you would find
- 9:43Speaker 4: as a through line through all of superhero mythology, you know?
- 9:46Speaker 4: I think that's probably also why we love seeing, you know,
- 9:50Speaker 4: when they team up, like, you know, whether it's X-Men
- 9:53Speaker 4: or the Justice League or even Hal and John together,
- 9:56Speaker 4: you know, we love seeing people together because you're like, oh,
- 9:58Speaker 4: they got, like, somebody you know they have a buddy
- 10:02Speaker 4: now they have a buddy now even if they hate
- 10:04Speaker 4: each other um yeah so to me um that's that's
- 10:09Speaker 4: a really well observed that's that's well observed portia no
- 10:11Speaker 4: i i definitely believe that's that's that's that's that's in the.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Text Going back, we were talking about movies and stuff
- 10:19Speaker 1: before we even started the show, but what was your
- 10:21Speaker 1: first exposure to geek culture, or when did you realize
- 10:25Speaker 1: that you yourself were a geek?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Wow. That is a really good question. Probably the first
- 10:36Speaker 4: movie I saw in theaters when I was a baby.
- 10:40Speaker 4: My mom and dad took me because they were tired
- 10:42Speaker 4: of sitting at home listening to me cry. It was Ghostbusters.
- 10:46Speaker 4: And I kind of remember it, but not really. You know,
- 10:51Speaker 4: I was, I was in diapers, but it was, I
- 10:55Speaker 4: think that was, I think that was my first exposure,
- 10:58Speaker 4: but movie or just anything, period. Oh, anything. I mean,
- 11:04Speaker 4: anything was He-Man, you know, I mean, nice. Anything was He-Man.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I mean, my mom, when I was a kid, I had,
- 11:10Speaker 4: I was, I was a Saturday morning cartoons kid. It
- 11:12Speaker 4: was like bowl of cereal. He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and
- 11:18Speaker 4: Away I Go. So that was sort of my first
- 11:20Speaker 4: exposure in terms of being a geek. My parents, I
- 11:25Speaker 4: still remember. The first movie I remember seeing in theaters
- 11:28Speaker 4: as a kid was the Transformers animated movie.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Man.
- 11:33Speaker 4: And that was, talk about a hard-ass movie. They just
- 11:37Speaker 4: actually re-released it. That's a hard-ass movie because when you're
- 11:40Speaker 4: a kid, You're expecting a Transformers cartoon. You're just expecting
- 11:45Speaker 4: another episode of Transformers, but over the span of 90 minutes.
- 11:49Speaker 4: These motherfuckers put all these kids in the theater and
- 11:53Speaker 4: they kill Optimus Prime within the first, what was it,
- 11:57Speaker 4: like 40 minutes.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Or something like that?
- 11:59Speaker 4: No, 15. 15?
- 11:59Speaker 1: It takes no time. It's the establishing incident. Optimus Prime's dead.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Optimus Prime is dead. They kill him. They straight up
- 12:07Speaker 4: kill Optimus Prime. And you're a kid in the theater. Like,
- 12:11Speaker 4: it was traumatizing. Traumatizing. But at the same time, I
- 12:17Speaker 4: will say I appreciate that move because of its boldness.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Because it showed, and I think this is something we
- 12:24Speaker 4: don't do as much now, but this idea of, like,
- 12:27Speaker 4: when you kill somebody off their stakes, you know? When
- 12:30Speaker 4: they killed Optimus Prime, I was like, he's coming back, right, Mom?
- 12:34Speaker 4: My mom's like, he's dead, son.
- 12:37Speaker 1: First of all, I'll tell you this. I remember that
- 12:40Speaker 1: movie so distinctly because it was the first movie I
- 12:42Speaker 1: ever rode the bus to see by myself. I was
- 12:44Speaker 1: a little kid and I rode it to see myself.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And so I had to ride home on the bus
- 12:48Speaker 1: by myself.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Oh, no. That must have been the saddest ride of
- 12:54Speaker 4: your life.
- 12:55Speaker 2: You know, it was like if they had the, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 2: the TV show.
- 12:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Match your heart out, man.
- 13:09Speaker 1: So on that, what was your first exposure to Green
- 13:12Speaker 1: Lantern then?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:13Speaker 4: My first exposure to Green Lantern was probably the Justice
- 13:18Speaker 4: League cartoon.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:21Speaker 1: The greatest.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Yes. It was so funny. Damon would bring these. He'd
- 13:28Speaker 4: show us these clips from the old cartoon that I
- 13:30Speaker 4: didn't even remember until he started showing some. And it
- 13:33Speaker 4: was like. all this like it's like feedback loop where
- 13:36Speaker 4: I was just like oh my god I can't remember
- 13:38Speaker 4: I can't I can't like believe this is what I'm
- 13:40Speaker 4: seeing right now um but yeah no that was my
- 13:43Speaker 4: first exposure to Green Lantern and my he you know
- 13:46Speaker 4: Hal Jordan was kind of like a you know he
- 13:49Speaker 4: was third fourth on the team or whatever so he
- 13:52Speaker 4: was like kind of like the guy behind the guy
- 13:55Speaker 4: but I always thought he was I always thought he
- 13:57Speaker 4: was cool he wasn't he obviously because I was you know,
- 14:00Speaker 4: a kid at the time and I was obsessed with
- 14:02Speaker 4: like Batman and Superman. I wasn't actually as aware. And
- 14:06Speaker 4: now I say that Green Lantern fans are the most,
- 14:09Speaker 4: you know, they're the most sophisticated because y'all saw him
- 14:12Speaker 4: before everybody, you know, like.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I, Hey, I raised my hand. I was, he was
- 14:18Speaker 1: my favorite as a kid, like off break. Like I love,
- 14:20Speaker 1: I just thought the idea was so cool. Like you
- 14:22Speaker 1: get this ring and you could create anything.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Like that was like the illest shit ever to me. Like, yeah.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 5: No, and you guys have done a fabulous job of, like,
- 14:31Speaker 5: tapping into not just, like, the fans of Green Lantern
- 14:35Speaker 5: and comic book fans, but, like, the general Discord across everyone.
- 14:39Speaker 5: We have really literally just mentioned on an episode just
- 14:42Speaker 5: the fact that y'all have brought in an audience of
- 14:45Speaker 5: people who would never have watched this if they just
- 14:48Speaker 5: read it as, quote, regular.
- 14:49Speaker 3: Comic book show, right? Like, you have.
- 14:52Speaker 5: really dive deeply into just humanity and the psyche of, of,
- 14:57Speaker 5: you know, just, just groundedness of what could be, you know, otherworldly.
- 15:01Speaker 5: So as you're, as, and, and I, I know you've
- 15:04Speaker 5: seen the responses online, good, bad, all in between.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Like, did you, at one point, did you look up
- 15:10Speaker 3: and like, yo, we are cooking with grease.
- 15:11Speaker 5: Like when you were in the writing room, like there's
- 15:14Speaker 5: had to be a point where you're like, nah, this
- 15:15Speaker 5: is it.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Or were you still like, I don't know.
- 15:17Speaker 4: I wish I could, I wish I could sound so confident,
- 15:21Speaker 4: but it's that thing where, when you're in it, there,
- 15:24Speaker 4: there is a, I mean, you have to obviously operate
- 15:27Speaker 4: from a place of confidence in the story you're telling,
- 15:29Speaker 4: but as far as what the reception was going to be,
- 15:33Speaker 4: I was, we're all shocked. I am shocked because no,
- 15:37Speaker 4: because it's a, you know, you know, the audience has
- 15:42Speaker 4: never been more vocal than they have. They are now.
- 15:45Speaker 4: And that's for a reason, you know, like we have
- 15:48Speaker 4: platforms where we can talk about this and forums and
- 15:51Speaker 4: podcasts and, you know, uh, social media, all of this
- 15:54Speaker 4: stuff allows us to have these conversations more openly. And
- 15:58Speaker 4: so it's, it's, it's, it's both, it's both, uh, an
- 16:01Speaker 4: empowering time to tell stories like this, but it's also
- 16:04Speaker 4: a terrifying time because you don't want to let people down. Um,
- 16:07Speaker 4: and so, um, at the time we were telling the story,
- 16:11Speaker 4: I think there was a, especially because we kill Hal
- 16:14Speaker 4: Jordan in the first episode, I think there was this
- 16:17Speaker 4: feeling of like, People are not going to, there are
- 16:21Speaker 4: going to be a lot of broken hearts, you know?
- 16:23Speaker 4: I mean, there are a lot of, Hal Jordan, if
- 16:24Speaker 4: Hal Jordan is your favorite superhero and has been for decades, right,
- 16:31Speaker 4: for the OGs, and the first episode of this show
- 16:35Speaker 4: that you've probably been waiting for on some level because
- 16:38Speaker 4: of just the fact that this is a story about
- 16:40Speaker 4: the Green Lanterns, and to come at the end of
- 16:43Speaker 4: that episode and see your guy in the bleachers with
- 16:47Speaker 4: a bullet in his head, that's tough. That's real tough.
- 16:51Speaker 4: And I am my, I have empathy for those people
- 16:53Speaker 4: because I would, I would feel the same way. I mean,
- 16:56Speaker 4: I felt that way when I, we were talking about
- 16:58Speaker 4: this earlier. I felt that way about Optimus Prime, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 4: that was, that was devastating. But it's also the fact
- 17:08Speaker 4: that we've had so many fans be heartbroken and still
- 17:12Speaker 4: love the show, despite the move is really heartening, you know,
- 17:16Speaker 4: and that's where I feel like, man, we, we, we, we,
- 17:20Speaker 4: the hard work paid off because we really worked, we
- 17:22Speaker 4: really worked hard to find a way to both honor
- 17:26Speaker 4: Hal Jordan in the, in the forward story, but also
- 17:30Speaker 4: really sort of really, and it wasn't just for shock value.
- 17:34Speaker 4: It's a really, you know, we made that Tom, Tom King,
- 17:38Speaker 4: Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy, they, they put that in
- 17:41Speaker 4: the pilot for a reason. And it sort of becomes
- 17:44Speaker 4: the catalyst for this greater story to become such a,
- 17:47Speaker 4: It's such a huge part of John's story, you know?
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And so, no, we're all, like, we're all heartened by
- 17:56Speaker 4: the reception. We couldn't have predicted or envisioned this at all. Like,
- 18:00Speaker 4: this is just, like, incredible. So I'm so grateful for
- 18:05Speaker 4: the fans. I'm so grateful for the love. And I'm
- 18:08Speaker 4: so glad everybody loves the show, you know? And even
- 18:10Speaker 4: if you don't, I'm glad you're still watching and engaging,
- 18:13Speaker 4: you know? Because that's cool, too, you know? Mm-hmm. I
- 18:18Speaker 4: hate watching things, you know?
- 18:21Speaker 3: It's all about the optics, right?
- 18:23Speaker 4: Right, right, right.
- 18:24Speaker 5: I was going to say, people hate watching our podcast
- 18:26Speaker 5: and be like, thank you for the views because they
- 18:27Speaker 5: still count.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, you know?
- 18:30Speaker 5: You know, and that's interesting that you said you were
- 18:33Speaker 5: actually surprised by the reception.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I mean, because... you guys are, you are being.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Very successful at what I didn't think was possible was
- 18:41Speaker 5: to make this a centerpiece. Like we've seen for years,
- 18:43Speaker 5: it's been Batman or Superman or some combination thereof, or Martha,
- 18:47Speaker 5: that is the centerpiece of the DC universe. So for
- 18:51Speaker 5: it to be Green Lantern, and that's not necessarily, even
- 18:53Speaker 5: though it's a very popular cast, it's not necessarily the,
- 18:56Speaker 5: anyone in the street's top tier DC character, I think
- 18:59Speaker 5: that shows the leaps and bounds that you guys are
- 19:01Speaker 5: making to really create a very effective universe. And even
- 19:07Speaker 5: in doing that, and all the different people you're bringing in,
- 19:09Speaker 5: all the different topics you're bringing in this series, We're
- 19:12Speaker 5: six episodes in, as Benjamin said earlier, and people are
- 19:15Speaker 5: still getting upset when this show mentions race, whether it's indirect, direct.
- 19:20Speaker 5: As you are kind of synthesizing people's reactions and all
- 19:24Speaker 5: this stuff, like, what do you think about that?
- 19:26Speaker 3: That whole thing about.
- 19:27Speaker 5: People being like, oh, here we go again about race. Oh,
- 19:29Speaker 5: why do you got to bring race in it? Like,
- 19:31Speaker 5: are people missing the point or is there something more
- 19:34Speaker 5: that you feel?
- 19:35Speaker 4: I don't even think people are missing the point. I
- 19:37Speaker 4: think whenever you talk about race, you have to sort
- 19:39Speaker 4: of radically accept that some people are going to be
- 19:41Speaker 4: uncomfortable or turned off. You know, that's just that's just
- 19:45Speaker 4: been my experience. I'm not going to speak for everybody else.
- 19:48Speaker 4: But for me, I mean, my mom. is a journalist.
- 19:52Speaker 4: My dad's a journalist. My mom and dad have written
- 19:55Speaker 4: heavily on race. My mom was a columnist for Washington
- 19:58Speaker 4: Post for the last she's been she was a columnist
- 20:01Speaker 4: for 20 years and she wrote a lot about race
- 20:03Speaker 4: and she got a lot of love. She got a
- 20:05Speaker 4: lot of flowers and, you know, she got some arrows,
- 20:08Speaker 4: you know, and I think When you're writing about something
- 20:11Speaker 4: that is always going to be wrapped up in the
- 20:15Speaker 4: fabric of a very complicated history, you're going to get
- 20:18Speaker 4: reactions like you get sometimes good, sometimes bad. But I
- 20:22Speaker 4: think I just I've been taught by my parents to
- 20:26Speaker 4: you just have to accept it. Right. And you've got
- 20:28Speaker 4: to be brave. If you don't talk about it, you're
- 20:30Speaker 4: going to you're going to feel like. You didn't speak
- 20:32Speaker 4: your truth, right? So it behooves you to talk about it.
- 20:38Speaker 4: And it's not about being on the nose. It's about
- 20:40Speaker 4: sometimes you're just, there are moments in this show where
- 20:45Speaker 4: it's unavoidable, right? Because we're talking about a Black man
- 20:49Speaker 4: replacing a white man, you know, as a superhero, right?
- 20:55Speaker 4: As the Green Lantern. How do you not talk about race, right?
- 20:59Speaker 4: There's just no way around it. If you didn't talk
- 21:02Speaker 4: about it, people would still be drawing those same conclusions, right?
- 21:06Speaker 4: They would be having those same conversations on their own, right?
- 21:10Speaker 4: And again, this is credit to Damon, who whenever there's
- 21:13Speaker 4: an issue, whenever there's something that you know or suspect
- 21:17Speaker 4: is on the surface visually, run at it, you know
- 21:20Speaker 4: what I mean? Address it, you know? That's why we
- 21:25Speaker 4: did what we did with Aaron when it came to
- 21:28Speaker 4: skin color, you know, because we knew Canonically, Jon Stewart
- 21:33Speaker 4: in the comics is darker skinned, right? And the fact
- 21:36Speaker 4: that Aaron doesn't have the same complexion as Jon Stewart
- 21:39Speaker 4: meant we have to talk about it because we know
- 21:42Speaker 4: that that's going to be something people are talking about.
- 21:45Speaker 4: And I think that's where actually social media and this
- 21:50Speaker 4: sort of instantaneous audience reaction is helpful because it allows
- 21:54Speaker 4: us as storytellers to go, okay, we know this is coming.
- 21:58Speaker 4: So what are we going to do about it?
- 22:01Speaker 2: Because you heard that as soon as Aaron was cast. Yeah.
- 22:04Speaker 4: I mean, as soon as he was cast.
- 22:05Speaker 3: As soon as.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 5: But it also is kind of annoying as a Black
- 22:10Speaker 5: person in America to hear something like that.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Because it's like.
- 22:13Speaker 5: And it's not a, oh, let's take what we can
- 22:15Speaker 5: get attitude. It's a, y'all are really complaining about this. Like,
- 22:19Speaker 5: we got an unambiguously Black man in place.
- 22:22Speaker 3: And it's just like, oh. But, like, it's even.
- 22:24Speaker 5: We had a similar reaction even when the most recent
- 22:28Speaker 5: young lady was cast as Storm.
- 22:30Speaker 3: They said, oh, well, she's not dark enough. And I
- 22:32Speaker 3: looked at that child and I said, wait a minute.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Are y'all dead ass right now? It's almost like you
- 22:37Speaker 3: can't win.
- 22:39Speaker 5: No matter what approach you do, even if it's good
- 22:43Speaker 5: intention and all the stuff behind it, or not even
- 22:45Speaker 5: just good intention, an intention behind it, a plan behind it.
- 22:49Speaker 3: It's just like, oh, no, not good enough.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Again, radical acceptance. You just accept, you know, that when
- 22:55Speaker 4: you get into this job as a writer, especially when
- 22:57Speaker 4: you're doing IP, like the massive IP that has all
- 23:01Speaker 4: the historical connotations that it has and all the fan
- 23:04Speaker 4: base that it does, you're just going to, you have
- 23:07Speaker 4: to accept the fact that you're not, everybody's going to
- 23:08Speaker 4: be happy. Right. But if you try to please everyone,
- 23:12Speaker 4: you'll please no one, you know, that's the thing. That's
- 23:15Speaker 4: why it's more important to just go, what story, this
- 23:18Speaker 4: is what I love about the IP space and whether it's,
- 23:22Speaker 4: James Gunn doing his, the DCU, you have Matt Reeves
- 23:25Speaker 4: doing his version of Batman. Like what I love about
- 23:28Speaker 4: this time period is that we are able to see
- 23:31Speaker 4: these superheroes through the purview of different creators and filmmakers
- 23:36Speaker 4: and to get their perspective, you know, and I think
- 23:38Speaker 4: that's the beauty of this sort of multiverse that we've
- 23:41Speaker 4: created in the IP space, you know, because you're not
- 23:44Speaker 4: going to please everyone, but you know what's great about it?
- 23:46Speaker 4: the more versions of these characters you have, the more
- 23:49Speaker 4: versions you can say, well, you know what? I prefer
- 23:51Speaker 4: Andrew Garfield or I prefer Tobey Maguire. I prefer, you know,
- 23:54Speaker 4: you can have your own squad, you know? And so
- 23:57Speaker 4: you can pick and choose. And so I think, I think,
- 24:02Speaker 4: I think like all the better, but, but, but yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 4: as a, as a, as a, as a writer, as
- 24:07Speaker 4: a director, as an actor, you just have to, you
- 24:11Speaker 4: have to accept the fact that you're going to disappoint people,
- 24:13Speaker 4: you know, and that's okay.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 24:15Speaker 6: Speaking of playing in the IP sandbox as a writer,
- 24:20Speaker 6: can you tell us a little bit about Zoe's point
- 24:22Speaker 6: with her mini speech on adversity in episode five? And
- 24:29Speaker 6: on the show, as we were watching it, we were
- 24:31Speaker 6: talking about it. We talked about how it kind of
- 24:34Speaker 6: felt like a bit of a discussion about Struggle Olympics
- 24:37Speaker 6: and spoke to the Manhunter's lack of understanding about the
- 24:40Speaker 6: Black experience, kind of letting it in more with the
- 24:43Speaker 6: greater BIPOC struggle idea. like that whole crucible and forging
- 24:48Speaker 6: through the fires of oppression to make us better people.
- 24:52Speaker 6: Like we're all doing it together, kind of a melting
- 24:53Speaker 6: pot kind of thought process.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Could you share like thoughts behind that?
- 24:58Speaker 6: Like as y'all were writing it and the intention behind, like,
- 25:02Speaker 6: is it her as a character or, kind of trying
- 25:05Speaker 6: to use a way to kind of make an overture
- 25:07Speaker 6: to John and playing with him?
- 25:09Speaker 3: Or is it as a manipulative kind of way?
- 25:11Speaker 1: Or is it.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Just actual feelings that she's feeling in that moment?
- 25:14Speaker 3: And Justin, I gotta jump in.
- 25:16Speaker 5: I hated that shit so bad. That shit pissed me off.
- 25:20Speaker 2: It's smooth.
- 25:21Speaker 3: I was like.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Can't lie, me too. I was sitting there like, what
- 25:24Speaker 2: is this broad talking about? She out her damn mind.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I can't believe John eating this nonsense up.
- 25:31Speaker 3: This was my question. Portia and I was actually on
- 25:34Speaker 3: that episode.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry.
- 25:36Speaker 3: I'm going to let you answer the question.
- 25:37Speaker 5: But Portia and I was on that episode where we
- 25:39Speaker 5: were like, what the fuck is Zoe on right now?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Like, it just felt wild. Like, no, this is not
- 25:45Speaker 3: the same. And, you know.
- 25:47Speaker 4: You chose this.
- 25:48Speaker 2: It felt like white men with dreads.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That's how I always feel. You know, whenever I see
- 25:52Speaker 1: white men with dreads, sorry, y'all. I just feel like
- 25:54Speaker 1: y'all can cut it at any time and you white.
- 25:56Speaker 1: You know, I cut this at any time.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I'm still.
- 25:59Speaker 3: It's a choice to, you know, combine it down. It's
- 26:04Speaker 3: a choice. But she did that. So to the writer, you.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Justin, please enlighten us.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Well, I love I love I love your I love
- 26:13Speaker 4: your opinions. I love what you I love your reaction,
- 26:16Speaker 4: because the the intent behind it was this. Zoe is
- 26:21Speaker 4: not from this planet. Right. Right. It's always from somewhere else.
- 26:24Speaker 4: And so her speech was more about this idea of
- 26:27Speaker 4: wherever she goes, she chooses that form, you know? So
- 26:30Speaker 4: there's always a version of adversity on any planet she
- 26:33Speaker 4: goes to. Right. So for this version of adversity in her,
- 26:37Speaker 4: our planet adversity was connected to race. Whereas on another planet,
- 26:41Speaker 4: it could have something to do with something completely different.
- 26:44Speaker 4: Her whole point of that speech was this idea of whatever,
- 26:47Speaker 4: whatever species or whatever planet that I, I, I, I visit, um,
- 26:54Speaker 4: I will take the form of the, the, the, the
- 26:56Speaker 4: species or, or the race that is that, that, that,
- 26:59Speaker 4: that is considered less than, you know, because edge over,
- 27:04Speaker 4: and it gives me sort of, it gives me some,
- 27:06Speaker 4: a perspective that I wouldn't normally have if I started in,
- 27:10Speaker 4: and I took the form of like, say, you know, uh, uh,
- 27:14Speaker 4: an elite, right. So that was the intent behind it. But, but,
- 27:18Speaker 4: but your, your, your, your reaction is well taken because
- 27:22Speaker 4: I can see how that could be. You could, you
- 27:24Speaker 4: could read it one way and say, what the fuck
- 27:26Speaker 4: is she on? But, but, but, but, but to get
- 27:29Speaker 4: deeper into the, for her, this is someone who has
- 27:33Speaker 4: learned to feel over time. Right. You know, like she
- 27:36Speaker 4: has learned to love, you know, one of my favorite, the, the, the,
- 27:40Speaker 4: and one of the characters or movies that I kept
- 27:45Speaker 4: thinking about with Zoe was Blade Runner. You know, this
- 27:47Speaker 4: idea of replicants and how they're not really, you know,
- 27:52Speaker 4: so their programming is this one thing, but as they
- 27:54Speaker 4: start to learn what it is to be human, they
- 27:57Speaker 4: become more human by association. And that's sort of what
- 28:00Speaker 4: Zoe's story was about. That's what I love about Porna's
- 28:04Speaker 4: performance is she really tried to calibrate the performance in
- 28:10Speaker 4: a way where you understood that she was always at
- 28:13Speaker 4: war with this thing, with her programming, but how she
- 28:15Speaker 4: actually felt as she took the form of a human being.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Right.
- 28:20Speaker 6: But how about her talking to John specifically about it? Like,
- 28:23Speaker 6: what was her point in just, like, bringing that to
- 28:26Speaker 6: John's plate?
- 28:27Speaker 4: Her point to bringing it to John was feeling like
- 28:29Speaker 4: she had a connection with John, you know?
- 28:31Speaker 3: All colors gotta sit together.
- 28:32Speaker 4: She was like, it was a little bit of that, like,
- 28:34Speaker 4: you could see it as manipulative, but I think from
- 28:36Speaker 4: Zoe's perspective, she was like, you of all people would
- 28:39Speaker 4: understand this. I mean, look around.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Yeah. you know, on that note, yeah, of course it's
- 28:46Speaker 1: not too satisfied, but on that note, do you feel
- 28:50Speaker 1: that Zoe and John had actual feelings for each other
- 28:52Speaker 1: or was the Manhunter versus the Green Lantern stroke game,
- 28:56Speaker 1: just an all-time classic?
- 29:00Speaker 4: I think, I think it's a little bit of both.
- 29:02Speaker 4: I think that John came in strategically as, as, Hey.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Man, Hey, I get it.
- 29:11Speaker 4: And John came in, you know, he came in like
- 29:14Speaker 4: with a plan and an objective. You know, John from
- 29:16Speaker 4: day one was like, oh, you know, John's a thinker.
- 29:19Speaker 4: You know, he comes in, he looks at it, he
- 29:20Speaker 4: looks at a place. He's from the military. I mean,
- 29:22Speaker 4: he's this is a guy who's done operations where he's
- 29:25Speaker 4: had to embed himself in different countries in order to
- 29:29Speaker 4: get in. You know, I think from John's point of view,
- 29:31Speaker 4: going into Rushville was no different. This was an operation.
- 29:34Speaker 4: I got to get to know the people. And I
- 29:36Speaker 4: think strategically aligning himself with someone like someone like Zoey.
- 29:40Speaker 4: was just like, how do I get to know this place?
- 29:41Speaker 4: And then he finds out, obviously, that she's married to Macon.
- 29:43Speaker 4: And he's like, OK, maybe I can find a way
- 29:45Speaker 4: to use that. But of course, over the course of
- 29:49Speaker 4: the series and especially in episode four, you start to
- 29:52Speaker 4: realize there is a little bit of that going on.
- 29:55Speaker 4: You know, it's like any great detective story where the
- 29:58Speaker 4: detective is is on the case, they get involved with
- 30:02Speaker 4: somebody and they develop feelings that they didn't know they
- 30:06Speaker 4: had for this person, but realize that they're still on
- 30:09Speaker 4: the case at the same time. So it's a little
- 30:11Speaker 4: push and pull of which way is up and all
- 30:13Speaker 4: that stuff. But, but yeah, it's, but, but, but I
- 30:16Speaker 4: think John, it just, it got a little messy for John,
- 30:18Speaker 4: but at the end, he still did what he had
- 30:20Speaker 4: to do. You know, he was, you know, he's, he's
- 30:23Speaker 4: an operator.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Everything you said there, he embedded himself, you know, got
- 30:27Speaker 1: to know, You know, he came in, got to know
- 30:30Speaker 1: people biblically, you know. He's an operator.
- 30:32Speaker 3: He's a smooth operator.
- 30:34Speaker 2: He's an operator.
- 30:35Speaker 4: I feel like.
- 30:37Speaker 3: He can't help himself. Since you said in bed, I
- 30:39Speaker 3: just started laughing.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Like, oh, my God.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Strategically, yeah.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Biblically, you know, yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 5: But on that point, it kind of also speaks to
- 30:48Speaker 5: something that I was thinking. Like, when you said, like,
- 30:50Speaker 5: because Zoe chooses that. because to have an edge on
- 30:54Speaker 5: people or things or places, it's just like, this is
- 30:57Speaker 5: more about thrill of the hunt. I mean, yes, Manhunter,
- 30:59Speaker 5: the word hunt is in the name, but is this
- 31:01Speaker 5: solely about the thrill of the hunt? Like, why do
- 31:03Speaker 5: you choose to choose the hard mode, you know, the
- 31:06Speaker 5: extra hard mode?
- 31:07Speaker 3: Like, because.
- 31:10Speaker 4: Because I think that's the best way to learn about
- 31:13Speaker 4: people because you're going to learn shit about people. I mean,
- 31:16Speaker 4: you're going to, when you face adversity, you learn shit
- 31:19Speaker 4: about this world that other people who don't will never learn.
- 31:22Speaker 4: You know, that's that's just life. And that's not against
- 31:26Speaker 4: people who haven't learned it. But, you know, as black people,
- 31:29Speaker 4: you learn a lot about humanity and how they feel
- 31:32Speaker 4: about you and how they feel about the world. then
- 31:34Speaker 4: you wouldn't then then you would if you weren't, you know,
- 31:37Speaker 4: and the same for everybody. I just think when you
- 31:39Speaker 4: start from the bottom, you're going to get the bottom right.
- 31:42Speaker 4: You're going to get what it's like to see you
- 31:45Speaker 4: sort of have this perspective of you see the worst
- 31:48Speaker 4: in people.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:50Speaker 4: Because people are going to treat you a certain way.
- 31:52Speaker 4: They're going to treat you in ways that people who
- 31:54Speaker 4: don't treat other people, you know. And I think I
- 31:57Speaker 4: think and I so so I was looking at that
- 32:00Speaker 4: that as a way to sort of weaponize her, her.
- 32:04Speaker 4: sort of her programming in a way that I thought
- 32:06Speaker 4: would be interesting. We thought would be interesting for the
- 32:09Speaker 4: character and not just sort of like, oh, I just
- 32:12Speaker 4: came here. I learned all that. It just gave her,
- 32:14Speaker 4: I think it gave her another layer of sort of
- 32:22Speaker 4: dimensionality and pathos that you wouldn't normally see in a
- 32:24Speaker 4: character like that.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Not to be on, like I have an agenda, but
- 32:29Speaker 3: I kind of, I'm still on this level.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Please have the agenda, please.
- 32:32Speaker 3: It's where I am right now. It's where I live.
- 32:35Speaker 6: Is the whole isolation idea with her because she is
- 32:39Speaker 6: like the lone manhunter on this planet as far as
- 32:41Speaker 6: she knows, as far as we know. And she chooses
- 32:45Speaker 6: to take the form of someone in a place that
- 32:47Speaker 6: could isolate her very easily, knowing that she's supposed to
- 32:51Speaker 6: be hiding out from a universe of people who are
- 32:54Speaker 6: willing to take her out in the first place.
- 32:56Speaker 1: So.
- 32:57Speaker 6: And it's like, I'm getting this overture about how many
- 33:01Speaker 6: different people within this story kind of like they are,
- 33:04Speaker 6: they feel isolated and they are also kind of isolating themselves.
- 33:09Speaker 6: And the way that we as viewers who have not,
- 33:12Speaker 6: I don't know, the way the world is today, it's
- 33:14Speaker 6: very easy to be connected and also be disconnected at
- 33:17Speaker 6: the same time. And, like, who does that, like, is
- 33:20Speaker 6: there a greater kind of appeal and engagement that you're
- 33:22Speaker 6: looking for as you're writing these characters? Because you could
- 33:25Speaker 6: even say the same thing for Aaron and for Marcus. Like,
- 33:29Speaker 6: they grew up in the same household as the chosen brother,
- 33:32Speaker 6: but they all have their own different things that how
- 33:35Speaker 6: they feel isolated from their parental units in some way.
- 33:38Speaker 3: And even the parents are not fully functioning.
- 33:41Speaker 1: So.
- 33:42Speaker 6: was that i'm doesn't it how intentional was that i
- 33:45Speaker 6: guess like how much of that work is putting behind
- 33:47Speaker 6: it or pulling these characters and their like motivations together so.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Portia that is a very for that i'll call that
- 33:54Speaker 4: 8k read of it because that's not something that i
- 33:56Speaker 4: was like i i personally was aware of you know
- 33:59Speaker 4: when we were writing it um but i think that's
- 34:01Speaker 4: a beautiful sort of um galaxy you know you you
- 34:06Speaker 4: just went full galaxy brain on that because i that's
- 34:09Speaker 4: that's what i love about shit like this is like
- 34:11Speaker 4: y'all start reading this and these are things we didn't
- 34:14Speaker 4: necessarily talk about in the room you know um as
- 34:17Speaker 4: far as like because we always looked at john as
- 34:20Speaker 4: the one who was isolated in that family you know
- 34:23Speaker 4: but for you to read even deeper that his isolationism
- 34:29Speaker 4: and the fact that he was being chosen by his
- 34:31Speaker 4: parents isolates his brother's It's something that I didn't personally,
- 34:37Speaker 4: I'm not gonna speak for the room. I didn't personally
- 34:39Speaker 4: observe when we were writing it, but I think that's
- 34:42Speaker 4: a beautiful observation because it, and it's absolutely true. You know, when,
- 34:46Speaker 4: when someone in, you know, if anyone on here has siblings,
- 34:49Speaker 4: you know, that there are situations where, whether it's because
- 34:53Speaker 4: you're the middle child or you're the last child, you know,
- 34:57Speaker 4: there's always that feeling of resentment between siblings, you know,
- 35:00Speaker 4: I'm the first. And so, And my brother will talk
- 35:03Speaker 4: about how, man, and my brother's an actor. His name
- 35:05Speaker 4: is Daryl Greg Gibson. He was in, I'm going to
- 35:08Speaker 4: give him a shout out. He was in Euphoria. He
- 35:10Speaker 4: played Bishop. He's been in The Wire.
- 35:11Speaker 1: The Wire.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Judas and the Black Messiah.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 35:18Speaker 4: And he used to, you know, and he'll be the
- 35:19Speaker 4: first to admit this. He used to resent the fact
- 35:21Speaker 4: that he was the second born. And for that reason,
- 35:24Speaker 4: he had to create his own identity because I was
- 35:27Speaker 4: considered the good kid. So I got to be the
- 35:30Speaker 4: bad kid, you know.
- 35:32Speaker 3: So were you the chosen one in the family?
- 35:34Speaker 4: I wouldn't say I was the chosen one. No, because
- 35:37Speaker 4: I wouldn't say that. He might say that he felt
- 35:39Speaker 4: like that was the case. But I mean, I have
- 35:43Speaker 4: my own perspective. You know, Daryl is an actor. He's
- 35:46Speaker 4: a performer. He was always performing. So from my point
- 35:49Speaker 4: of view, the spotlight was always on him. Right.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 35:52Speaker 4: You know, so. You know, and my mom did an
- 35:56Speaker 4: incredible job. She's one of the most considerate people. She
- 35:59Speaker 4: is the most considerate person I know next to my
- 36:01Speaker 4: wife because she just made sure all of us felt seen,
- 36:05Speaker 4: you know. But even then, you're going to have a
- 36:08Speaker 4: child at some point or another who's going to feel like, well, who's,
- 36:12Speaker 4: you know, that's just being a sibling. It's like, you know,
- 36:14Speaker 4: we're fighting for it, you know.
- 36:15Speaker 1: I do want to go back to what Portia said,
- 36:19Speaker 1: because like you said, that was such a great point.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And Also, it's just the fact that like, you know,
- 36:26Speaker 1: they're all isolated. John feels like, you know, he's the
- 36:29Speaker 1: chosen one. His brothers hate him for it. But everyone,
- 36:33Speaker 1: you know, is going through this trauma of it. And
- 36:37Speaker 1: I personally, it like, I think that's why I could
- 36:41Speaker 1: not stand what Zoe said in that instance is because
- 36:44Speaker 1: it's so real, you know, and that's why it bothered
- 36:47Speaker 1: me so much, you know, because when she's.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Like, oh, you know, you learn more from the bottom,
- 36:51Speaker 2: like you.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Said, I'm like, well, yeah, but why, you know, I don't,
- 36:56Speaker 1: I don't want to have to learn more, but you know, it's,
- 37:00Speaker 1: you know, so that, that really did hit me. And
- 37:02Speaker 1: that's why, you know, Portia and you, and thank you for,
- 37:05Speaker 1: you know, breaking that down because it really, I think
- 37:09Speaker 1: the truth of it, like you said, writing truth will
- 37:11Speaker 1: hurt people. And that one really did hurt me because
- 37:14Speaker 1: it's like, yo, I don't want to have to feel that,
- 37:16Speaker 1: you know?
- 37:16Speaker 4: No, I really appreciate that. And I'm sorry that that,
- 37:19Speaker 4: and I, I've had this conversation before, you know, and I'm, my,
- 37:23Speaker 4: I'm sorry that that created that reaction that it had,
- 37:26Speaker 4: you know, because.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Oh no, but that's what we shouldn't be sorry.
- 37:30Speaker 4: No, but I mean, you know, like, I don't, you know,
- 37:32Speaker 4: it's like, it's like, there are things that you just
- 37:35Speaker 4: feel in the moment. You feel like you got to
- 37:37Speaker 4: put on the page. Right. You know, in that moment
- 37:39Speaker 4: to me, that's what Zoe, you know, and Damon, you know,
- 37:43Speaker 4: Damon and I in the room, we all talked about,
- 37:44Speaker 4: I mean, that's just, that's what you feel like Zoe
- 37:48Speaker 4: that that's, that's Zoe's experience, you know? And, a lot
- 37:51Speaker 4: of times you're gonna write you're gonna write shit and
- 37:53Speaker 4: this is when you know you talk about cooking it's
- 37:56Speaker 4: like yeah when you know something is working is when
- 37:59Speaker 4: you're writing a character that you as an individual probably
- 38:03Speaker 4: wouldn't fuck with but you're writing them in a way
- 38:06Speaker 4: where you're like no but you got a point you
- 38:09Speaker 4: know i mean that's that's the that's i mean think
- 38:11Speaker 4: of i mean he did such an amazing i mean
- 38:14Speaker 4: i think one of the greatest hat tricks um in
- 38:19Speaker 4: sort of our comic lore as it pertains to cinema
- 38:22Speaker 4: was what Ryan did with Killmonger, you know? And they
- 38:26Speaker 4: sort of really made a character who had the best
- 38:30Speaker 4: of intentions, made us question and wonder, are Wakandans the
- 38:38Speaker 4: bad guys here? You know? Like, do I agree with...
- 38:42Speaker 4: I mean, Killmonger.
- 38:44Speaker 4: He's spitting bars here. He wasn't wrong. We're still saying
- 38:47Speaker 4: he wasn't wrong.
- 38:49Speaker 3: He was wrong, but he wasn't all the way wrong.
- 38:52Speaker 4: He wasn't all the way wrong. And they make.
- 38:54Speaker 1: Him do egregious things just so it's like, okay, he
- 38:58Speaker 1: chokes our grandmas. He quotes you know, he quotes literal
- 39:02Speaker 1: Nazis and it's like, you know, he has to do that.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Otherwise, otherwise you might be on his side.
- 39:07Speaker 1: And, and yeah. And that's like, that's why I, you know,
- 39:10Speaker 1: I love it, but I also feel the influence of like,
- 39:12Speaker 1: you know, corporate because it's like, oh man, man, in fact,
- 39:15Speaker 1: he's really right.
- 39:16Speaker 2: You know, he could have been a revolutionary.
- 39:18Speaker 1: He's over here liberating the museum.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Like we can't have people too hype about the museum
- 39:22Speaker 3: artifacts going backward.
- 39:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Kilmarnock is a thousand percent right. You know, like, oh,
- 39:27Speaker 1: let me make him choke a grandma. So, you know, like, yeah.
- 39:32Speaker 4: But it's, it's, it's, I mean, but that is the,
- 39:34Speaker 4: I think that's, and that's what I love personally about
- 39:37Speaker 4: storytelling is when It incites me and it may not
- 39:41Speaker 4: be a reaction I like, you know, or it makes
- 39:43Speaker 4: me a little uncomfortable or it disappoints me in a way,
- 39:46Speaker 4: because I think it creates this engagement with the story
- 39:48Speaker 4: that you wouldn't otherwise have if it was just this
- 39:50Speaker 4: sort of like bad guys has a couple of lines.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Bad guy gets killed. Good guy walks off into the
- 39:56Speaker 4: sunset and away we go. I mean. I love it
- 39:59Speaker 4: that we can have these conversations in this space, you know,
- 40:03Speaker 4: that it doesn't have to be reserved for the movies
- 40:06Speaker 4: we grew up with, which I love, like the just
- 40:08Speaker 4: the message movies that we can put some of these
- 40:11Speaker 4: messages in comic book stuff. You know, I think that's
- 40:15Speaker 4: I think that's that's incredible. Yeah. And it's great, you know?
- 40:17Speaker 6: And even then, they're not heavy-handed. Like, you sprinkle in
- 40:19Speaker 6: a little bit episode one, and then we come back.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Episode three, see how we feel about that.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Like, it's the play. You said they're pretty heavy-handed, but
- 40:26Speaker 2: people are also dumb. Yeah, I mean, that's the thing.
- 40:29Speaker 3: I'm like, you know, it's crazy.
- 40:31Speaker 4: I mean, I honestly, it's true, though. Like, we didn't,
- 40:36Speaker 4: this whole, we didn't set out to make a Black
- 40:38Speaker 4: show or a woke show. We just, it was just like,
- 40:42Speaker 4: this is a part of the conversation. We got to
- 40:44Speaker 4: put it in here. I honestly believe if we didn't
- 40:48Speaker 4: talk about this stuff in the show. I don't think
- 40:51Speaker 4: people would, would, would fuck with it as much.
- 40:54Speaker 3: No, it would be disingenuous.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Wild.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yes.
- 40:57Speaker 5: You told me, you told me John Stewart, black man,
- 41:01Speaker 5: number one, got put in the middle of Rushville, Nebraska.
- 41:03Speaker 5: And I was not like, even when I was like,
- 41:06Speaker 5: when he realized the guy was an alien, cause he
- 41:08Speaker 5: had no reaction to the Barack Obama, Barack.
- 41:12Speaker 3: Hussein Obama question.
- 41:13Speaker 5: Like you, like I, I feel you what you said earlier, Justin,
- 41:16Speaker 5: just the fact that there's certain things that like in
- 41:19Speaker 5: the context of this being quote real people, in america
- 41:22Speaker 5: they have to act a certain way they have to
- 41:24Speaker 5: react a certain way there have to be certain questions
- 41:26Speaker 5: asked or it's not going to feel real it's not
- 41:28Speaker 5: going to at least feel true to the story.
- 41:30Speaker 4: So i mean thank you and also let's be honest
- 41:33Speaker 4: let's keep it a buck i mean nobody said complained
- 41:35Speaker 4: when kevin costner was hanging around with native americans and
- 41:38Speaker 4: dances with wolves you know what i mean it's like
- 41:41Speaker 4: how many show how many movies and shows where a
- 41:43Speaker 4: white man goes to a strange land You know, how
- 41:46Speaker 4: much do we talk about race or culture in those
- 41:49Speaker 4: shows or movies.
- 41:50Speaker 6: You know? It took so long for people to say
- 41:52Speaker 6: anything about, was it Tom, was it, no, Tom Cruise,
- 41:57Speaker 6: who was doing the Great Wall stuff?
- 41:59Speaker 2: Last Samurai.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Last Samurai.
- 42:00Speaker 3: And it took years for online discourse to be like,
- 42:03Speaker 3: so are we going to talk about this? Yeah, to
- 42:05Speaker 3: be like, actually, maybe that wasn't the best thing.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 42:07Speaker 5: Like, that wasn't the best thing. I mean, listen, in
- 42:10Speaker 5: the words of Pocahontas' father, these white men are dangerous.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And like I said, my favorite quote and what I
- 42:17Speaker 1: say again and again on this show is that when
- 42:20Speaker 1: it's politics you.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Agree with, you don't notice it and you don't say anything.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And the problem is 95% of the time, the politics
- 42:27Speaker 1: presented in television and all media are from a white
- 42:31Speaker 1: man's perspective. So you're trained to not disagree with it.
- 42:34Speaker 1: You're trained to accept that that is the way and
- 42:36Speaker 1: that it is. So when you're presented with a different perspective,
- 42:39Speaker 1: suddenly it's shocking and everything, you're like, oh my God, you.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Know, these girls have opinions.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. And when you hear the argument that like,
- 42:50Speaker 4: I don't think the IP space is the place to
- 42:53Speaker 4: talk about stuff like that. It's, it's, it's like, guys,
- 43:00Speaker 4: this was in, if you look at the, like Jon Stewart,
- 43:03Speaker 4: when he was created in the 1970s was a full
- 43:07Speaker 4: on reaction to the fact that that we didn't have
- 43:10Speaker 4: any black green lanterns or that many black superheroes to
- 43:13Speaker 4: begin with. And he was created by a white man.
- 43:17Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 43:19Speaker 3: Who created Black Panther? Like, think about it.
- 43:22Speaker 4: Come on, you know, it's like, he was a reaction
- 43:25Speaker 4: to the civil rights era. So I'm just, you know, yes,
- 43:29Speaker 4: you can have your feelings, but it's, and yes, you
- 43:31Speaker 4: can object, but it's like, I just think it's disingenuous
- 43:35Speaker 4: not to talk about it.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 43:37Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 43:38Speaker 5: I just wanted to go back to, you know, the
- 43:40Speaker 5: writing on this and particularly how people are interpreting things.
- 43:43Speaker 5: On the other side of things, like, you know, we
- 43:44Speaker 5: have the political stuff and all that, but what about, like,
- 43:46Speaker 5: how do you feel about some of the speculation that's
- 43:48Speaker 5: been happening? Like, do you feel a type of way
- 43:50Speaker 5: when people are worried about Anton being like a red lantern, right?
- 43:54Speaker 3: That's out the window now. He is now in Kansas somewhere.
- 43:57Speaker 1: But, you know.
- 44:00Speaker 5: Maybe that black portal has something to do with Black
- 44:02Speaker 5: Lanterns or, you know, maybe that's a reach.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Maybe not. I don't know. Maybe you'll tell us. Maybe
- 44:07Speaker 3: you won't.
- 44:08Speaker 5: Do you feel a way about people like making broad
- 44:11Speaker 5: speculation or just watching for what the show is on screen? Like,
- 44:16Speaker 5: how do you feel about it? And then also, I
- 44:18Speaker 5: know you in there sitting there writing like, oh, this
- 44:20Speaker 5: is a red herring. And you're just like, I got
- 44:21Speaker 5: these niggas. They're going to take this bait and run
- 44:25Speaker 5: with it.
- 44:27Speaker 2: She's related to Batman.
- 44:28Speaker 1: She's from Gotham.
- 44:31Speaker 3: That was Barbara Gordon on the phone.
- 44:36Speaker 4: Well, I mean, uh, first of all, uh, the way
- 44:42Speaker 4: I feel when I see the speculation is delight. And
- 44:46Speaker 4: the reason I know when I, the reason I feel
- 44:48Speaker 4: delight and I mean, this is that it is, um,
- 44:55Speaker 4: to me, it sort of undergirds a larger truth for
- 44:58Speaker 4: me is that everybody's a storyteller. And when you do
- 45:03Speaker 4: your job and you tell a story, you immediately are
- 45:06Speaker 4: going to conjure your own ideas of where the narrative
- 45:10Speaker 4: is going to go, you know? And that's what I
- 45:12Speaker 4: think is a beautiful about the speculation. I was like, oh, cool.
- 45:15Speaker 4: I didn't, you know, I'll see people saying, I think
- 45:17Speaker 4: it's going to go this way. I think it's going
- 45:19Speaker 4: to go that way, whether they're right or wrong. I'm like,
- 45:21Speaker 4: that's a good pitch, you know? And so to me,
- 45:25Speaker 4: It illuminates this beautiful idea that every one of y'all
- 45:28Speaker 4: watching is a storyteller. You know, you're engaging with the story.
- 45:32Speaker 4: And if you're really dialed in, you're going to start
- 45:35Speaker 4: telling your own version of story. We all do it,
- 45:37Speaker 4: you know? Yeah. So I love the speculation because it
- 45:42Speaker 4: just shows that y'all are starting to tell your own story.
- 45:46Speaker 3: Do you ever get scared? Like, like, damn, they're going
- 45:47Speaker 3: to figure out the whole season before we get there.
- 45:49Speaker 4: You know, it's just, again, radical acceptance. But, but, but,
- 45:55Speaker 4: but no. And I love seeing, I mean, that's, that's,
- 45:57Speaker 4: that's fun for me. I mean, that's fun for us. We,
- 45:59Speaker 4: we love, I love seeing the different theories. I mean,
- 46:03Speaker 4: that just means audience engagement is the best, you know,
- 46:07Speaker 4: it just means people are really locked in. So it's,
- 46:10Speaker 4: it's a, it's a gift.
- 46:12Speaker 6: I want to say one, I feel like people just
- 46:15Speaker 6: heard here from a writer from the lanterns that you
- 46:18Speaker 6: are an advocate for fan fiction. And so whatever they're
- 46:21Speaker 6: doing over there, you're down. You may not read it,
- 46:24Speaker 6: but you're down with it.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Yeah. No, no. I mean, it's a, it's a great outlet,
- 46:29Speaker 4: you know? I mean, if you really feel drawn to characters,
- 46:32Speaker 4: you're going to, I mean, honestly, uh, fan fiction. I mean, you,
- 46:38Speaker 4: it has, it has certain like connotations, but like, I
- 46:43Speaker 4: think if I'm being paid to adapt a story that
- 46:46Speaker 4: already exists, that's in itself my version of fan fiction
- 46:50Speaker 4: in a way. If a story of a Green Lantern's
- 46:54Speaker 4: already been told, if a story about Star Wars has
- 46:56Speaker 4: already been told, if a story of any of these
- 47:00Speaker 4: characters that have already been created by these brilliant people
- 47:02Speaker 4: have been told, I don't mean to denigrate it. I'm
- 47:07Speaker 4: trying to uplift this word. It's fan fiction. It's your take.
- 47:11Speaker 6: It's like a new way to look at canon. Like
- 47:14Speaker 6: it's tangents off of canon.
- 47:16Speaker 3: They're all canon, just different levels of it.
- 47:19Speaker 5: So it sounds like you're saying there could be multiple
- 47:22Speaker 5: things true at the same time.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Who would have thought of that?
- 47:25Speaker 1: Wow.
- 47:28Speaker 3: Interesting. Just, you know, responding out there to all the
- 47:31Speaker 3: things people say online.
- 47:32Speaker 2: That's all.
- 47:34Speaker 3: There's a little angel halo for you.
- 47:37Speaker 6: As we're talking about writing, though, because I'm a huge
- 47:40Speaker 6: mystery lover.
- 47:41Speaker 3: I think all of us here are.
- 47:42Speaker 6: One thing that kept coming to me as the story
- 47:45Speaker 6: is unfolding in front of us is how did y'all
- 47:48Speaker 6: approach it in the writing room? Was the story written
- 47:51Speaker 6: chronologically at first and then worked in reverse order to
- 47:53Speaker 6: determine what we would see first as viewers? And what
- 47:58Speaker 6: were the deciding factors behind what was filmed or left
- 48:01Speaker 6: in early pages? We learned from Vanessa that Bernadette had
- 48:05Speaker 6: a little scene in the library where she was doing
- 48:07Speaker 6: research before we see what happens with her training John.
- 48:10Speaker 6: So what are the decision-making processes behind what gets shown
- 48:14Speaker 6: and what got kind of left behind?
- 48:17Speaker 4: You know, so Chris Mundy, our showrunner, he, you know,
- 48:19Speaker 4: and this is true of any showrunner, you start by saying,
- 48:23Speaker 4: you start to build out the structure of the season.
- 48:27Speaker 4: You go, okay, this is where we have to go.
- 48:30Speaker 4: These are the characters. You start with the characters and
- 48:33Speaker 4: you sort of like, you know, line them up and
- 48:35Speaker 4: then you go, OK, then you go, OK, what's what's
- 48:37Speaker 4: John got to do in this episode? What's Hal going
- 48:40Speaker 4: to do in this episode? And how and how does
- 48:42Speaker 4: it serve the overall objective of where these characters are going?
- 48:46Speaker 4: You know, the pilot. So the pilot was written first.
- 48:50Speaker 4: And Chris, Damon and Tom sort of had this pilot written,
- 48:56Speaker 4: you know, you get to the end of it. find
- 48:58Speaker 4: out that in 2026, Hal Jordan's been killed, right? So
- 49:03Speaker 4: it's like, where do we go from here? And that's
- 49:05Speaker 4: where the writers come in, Vanessa, Bree, myself, we get
- 49:11Speaker 4: brought in and now we're looking at sort of the overall,
- 49:14Speaker 4: like how do we help and sort of aid this
- 49:17Speaker 4: story and sort of build this trajectory that gets us
- 49:20Speaker 4: to this end game, you know? And structurally it's interesting
- 49:24Speaker 4: because Chris initially had envisioned this show as a, it
- 49:29Speaker 4: wasn't told linearly. So we were going to, we were
- 49:33Speaker 4: each episode would kind of bounce in and out of time.
- 49:36Speaker 4: And it was a really cool structure for the show.
- 49:39Speaker 4: I understand why it works this way as well. But initially,
- 49:43Speaker 4: Chris wanted to sort of play with time, like episode five,
- 49:47Speaker 4: which was the Rushville episode. That was initially going to
- 49:51Speaker 4: be episode seven. So you were it was going to
- 49:56Speaker 4: be you were going to be basically like what happened
- 49:58Speaker 4: in Rushville, what happened in Rushville all the way to
- 50:01Speaker 4: episode seven. Right. Yeah. And that was one that was
- 50:04Speaker 4: one way to do it. it was just as effective
- 50:08Speaker 4: though to go like, but if we do it this way,
- 50:11Speaker 4: which was more of like sort of the true detective structure,
- 50:16Speaker 4: you do Rushville and now you do sort of like
- 50:19Speaker 4: a reset, right? So now you're coming into episode six
- 50:22Speaker 4: and you're like, man, okay. So John's got it. Now
- 50:25Speaker 4: John's on the case, you know, now John's back in Rushville.
- 50:29Speaker 4: He's deciding whether or not he's going to stay. And
- 50:31Speaker 4: then he gets sort of organically pulled back into this mess.
- 50:34Speaker 4: And now he's here to sort of, finish whatever it
- 50:38Speaker 4: is he started with.
- 50:39Speaker 1: How man it's really dope and interesting hearing you talk
- 50:44Speaker 1: about this because one you were talking about you know
- 50:47Speaker 1: how fan fiction is kind of like how everyone is
- 50:50Speaker 1: storytellers and it's like reminds me because you know i've
- 50:52Speaker 1: worked in one writer's room and i'm so like i
- 50:57Speaker 1: don't want to say jealous but also like wow that's
- 50:59Speaker 1: like to have chris tom and damon you know sitting
- 51:03Speaker 1: there and then vanessa you And you said Brie and
- 51:07Speaker 1: then there's, you still had staff writers below you, right?
- 51:11Speaker 4: No, that was, that was, it was, that was it.
- 51:14Speaker 4: It was, yeah, that was, it was a pretty small room.
- 51:17Speaker 4: We had, we had a, and then we had, um,
- 51:20Speaker 4: you know, a couple of like, uh, uh, assistants who
- 51:23Speaker 4: were very integral and very helpful as well. You know,
- 51:26Speaker 4: we had, uh, this, uh, Damon's guy, Joaquin Lopez. We
- 51:30Speaker 4: had this other great writer who was our writer's assistant,
- 51:33Speaker 4: Noah Selman. We had, um, we had, we had, um,
- 51:38Speaker 4: we had Allie, we had, we had Brittany Worthington. We
- 51:41Speaker 4: had all of these like great minds come together. And
- 51:44Speaker 4: Chris is a very, um, generous showrunner. So, you know,
- 51:48Speaker 4: Allie Lucci, one of the, um, you know, not only
- 51:51Speaker 4: was she assists Chris, but she's sort of like, you know,
- 51:54Speaker 4: it's like an apprenticeship. So she learns how to write
- 51:57Speaker 4: through this experience and she's a writer herself. And so,
- 52:00Speaker 4: you know, we would hear pitches from the other assistants
- 52:02Speaker 4: as well. Um, And sometimes they might make it into
- 52:05Speaker 4: the shows. This other guy, Ashish Chand, really cool guy.
- 52:09Speaker 4: So it's a real collaboration. I mean, in a giving
- 52:13Speaker 4: in a generous writer's room, even the assistants are allowed
- 52:16Speaker 4: to chime in. And sometimes those pitches will make it
- 52:19Speaker 4: on the board. But I just wanted to finish up, Portia.
- 52:23Speaker 4: I apologize for not finishing answering your question. As far
- 52:26Speaker 4: as things that fell on the cutting room floor, like
- 52:29Speaker 4: you just, you have to, not to, not to, not
- 52:33Speaker 4: to crib how, but you got to go with your gut.
- 52:35Speaker 4: And sometimes these things just have to go, you know,
- 52:37Speaker 4: and we had things we shot that didn't make it.
- 52:39Speaker 4: There was a whole animated sequence that was going to
- 52:43Speaker 4: be in five where we were going to learn about
- 52:47Speaker 4: Zoe's origins and sort of the style of, you remember
- 52:51Speaker 4: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, that whole thing. We
- 52:55Speaker 4: were trying to do some, we were going to do
- 52:57Speaker 4: something similar where while John was sort of, in that
- 53:00Speaker 4: coma and being healed, he was going to be sort
- 53:03Speaker 4: of like immersed in Zoe's world. And he was going
- 53:07Speaker 4: to learn how he was learning about her journey from
- 53:10Speaker 4: being created as a man hunter to her relationship with Anton,
- 53:15Speaker 4: to how she got to Rushville and killed Albin Sur
- 53:19Speaker 4: and all that stuff. But because of time, because of
- 53:21Speaker 4: all this other stuff we had to, we had to
- 53:23Speaker 4: cut it. It was, it was a darling we had
- 53:25Speaker 4: to kill, but. It was something that I was really
- 53:28Speaker 4: proud of, but unfortunately it didn't.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Make the final cut.
- 53:30Speaker 3: Was it filmed?
- 53:32Speaker 4: I think we filmed a little bit of it, but
- 53:35Speaker 4: it was one of those things where I can't remember.
- 53:38Speaker 4: I mean, look, we started on this show in the
- 53:43Speaker 4: summer of 2024, you know, started writing on the show
- 53:47Speaker 4: and then production was beginning of 2025. So it's been a,
- 53:51Speaker 4: it's that thing where that's also the thing. It's like,
- 53:54Speaker 4: it's been a couple of years and you're like, How
- 53:56Speaker 4: did that?
- 53:57Speaker 3: Where did that one thing go?
- 54:00Speaker 6: I'm just saying if it dropped later on as a
- 54:04Speaker 6: little short online, I would, I would came out.
- 54:07Speaker 4: No, I mean, it was, it was, I was really
- 54:09Speaker 4: proud of that scene. Cause you know, you really, it
- 54:12Speaker 4: was a really cool way to sort of understand Zoe's
- 54:15Speaker 4: origins and, and do it. And there's not, not just a, um,
- 54:19Speaker 4: And to sort of do this little almost like mini move.
- 54:22Speaker 4: I love when you do like little mini movies within
- 54:24Speaker 4: movies like Kill Bill with like the issue thing.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Yes.
- 54:28Speaker 4: Some of my favorite. Yes. So good. And so we
- 54:33Speaker 4: were like, what if we did this for Zoe? And
- 54:35Speaker 4: I think it would have deepened your understanding of her
- 54:37Speaker 4: character a little bit.
- 54:39Speaker 1: But, you know.
- 54:41Speaker 4: Gotta kill your darling.
- 54:42Speaker 3: One gets away. That's all right.
- 54:43Speaker 5: It reminds me, I don't know if you've ever seen
- 54:45Speaker 5: the Animatrix, but it was like that library, the compendium.
- 54:48Speaker 4: Come on.
- 54:49Speaker 2: That's like the best version of The Matrix.
- 54:51Speaker 5: Of The Matrix, to really understand the detailing between, you know,
- 54:55Speaker 5: the reading between the lines on everything. Like, that would
- 54:58Speaker 5: have been insane. I have to, I want to second Portia.
- 55:01Speaker 5: If you guys do have that film somewhere, you might
- 55:04Speaker 5: want to, you know, I.
- 55:05Speaker 3: Might pay for it.
- 55:06Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 55:07Speaker 3: I'm just saying.
- 55:08Speaker 4: I'll have to talk to Chris about that one because, yeah,
- 55:11Speaker 4: I don't remember where we were. uh in terms of
- 55:15Speaker 4: the process of that it was obviously written and we
- 55:18Speaker 4: had um some i saw like early drawings which were
- 55:22Speaker 4: so beautiful by this artist whose name is escaping me
- 55:25Speaker 4: so i apologize but it was it was a beautiful
- 55:28Speaker 4: and the director uh gita she she was so down
- 55:31Speaker 4: for this she was so down and so excited to
- 55:34Speaker 4: to to put this in the show um yeah but
- 55:38Speaker 4: um hey you know sometimes it.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Happens I just love to hear the fact that you guys,
- 55:43Speaker 5: even as much as you're already pushing things, you're pushing
- 55:45Speaker 5: the envelope, even just on the medium-style use.
- 55:47Speaker 3: Like, it's already, for a lot of people, wild to
- 55:50Speaker 3: see a superhero.
- 55:53Speaker 5: story used in this format, this kind of true detective format,
- 55:57Speaker 5: you know, gritty down to earth, but then also to say, oh,
- 55:59Speaker 5: there could have been an animated sequence, right? So it
- 56:02Speaker 5: reminds me of just like, even when it comes to
- 56:05Speaker 5: you as an, as an artist, right?
- 56:06Speaker 3: You're creative.
- 56:07Speaker 5: You, you are things that are going to impact you
- 56:11Speaker 5: as you, you know, grow.
- 56:13Speaker 3: How did you experience?
- 56:14Speaker 5: Is there, has there been like a project, like a
- 56:16Speaker 5: TV show or film, anything that really creatively can change
- 56:20Speaker 5: your concept of story writing and vision? And to that,
- 56:24Speaker 5: I got to add two things to that.
- 56:28Speaker 3: Athena and RRR.
- 56:29Speaker 5: I don't know if you've ever heard of these, but
- 56:31Speaker 5: you need to get into them if you haven't. But please,
- 56:34Speaker 5: is there something that, besides The Matrix, obviously.
- 56:36Speaker 3: That really like.
- 56:37Speaker 4: That inspired me. Yeah.
- 56:39Speaker 5: And not just inspired, but like really just altered your
- 56:42Speaker 5: brain chemistry where it's just like, wow, this is where
- 56:45Speaker 5: I can really take storytelling.
- 56:47Speaker 4: Okay. The reason I'm saying wow is because I am a,
- 56:51Speaker 4: I was raised by a film. So my mom, before
- 56:53Speaker 4: she was a columnist, was a film critic. So I
- 56:55Speaker 4: watched a ton of movies growing up. And I went
- 57:00Speaker 4: to film school. I used to just gobble them up.
- 57:04Speaker 4: I used to have my... I was the kid with
- 57:06Speaker 4: the Netflix discs getting mailed to me back and forth,
- 57:10Speaker 4: just popping them in. I love movies. I love TV.
- 57:14Speaker 4: But movies were always my first passion. Movies. Okay. Wow. Okay.
- 57:19Speaker 6: So.
- 57:22Speaker 4: When I was a kid, this is going to be
- 57:24Speaker 4: a little long, but it's multi-prong. When I was a kid,
- 57:28Speaker 4: the TV show that made me want to work on
- 57:30Speaker 4: television as a medium was Miami Vice. Because it was
- 57:35Speaker 4: the first TV show that didn't look like a TV show.
- 57:38Speaker 4: It was stylish. I mean, this was like Lionel Richie
- 57:43Speaker 4: and all these other people doing music and the clothes
- 57:46Speaker 4: and the colors and the vibes and the grit. Um,
- 57:52Speaker 4: it was just some, there was something very cinematic about that.
- 57:55Speaker 4: That was so resonant to me. Um, and so Miami
- 57:58Speaker 4: vice blew my mind and also because, you know, Philip
- 58:01Speaker 4: Michael Thomas, he was, you know, you had a black
- 58:03Speaker 4: partner in that show and you seeing a black man,
- 58:05Speaker 4: you know, in Miami looking dope as fuck. You're like, man,
- 58:09Speaker 4: like we can do that too. Okay. You know, and
- 58:13Speaker 4: around the same time Beverly Hills cop came out, you know,
- 58:16Speaker 4: and so you're seeing a funny guy. be dope as fuck. Right.
- 58:20Speaker 4: I mean, Eddie Murphy, I don't, I still don't know
- 58:22Speaker 4: if there's anyone like Eddie Murphy where you had someone
- 58:26Speaker 4: who could be equal parts, like funny and sexy at
- 58:30Speaker 4: the same time. And so that became a part of
- 58:34Speaker 4: the soup to blow, but blow my mind and like
- 58:38Speaker 4: reframe the way I look at storytelling. Wow.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:41Speaker 4: Okay. Okay.
- 58:42Speaker 3: And if it is the matrix, that's fine.
- 58:44Speaker 6: No, no.
- 58:44Speaker 4: I mean, it's, it's, it's one, I would say for me,
- 58:49Speaker 4: I'm going to get a little pretentious here, and I
- 58:52Speaker 4: apologize in advance, but there is this movie called Breathless
- 58:56Speaker 4: from the 1960s from Jean-Luc Godard, and it's from the
- 58:59Speaker 4: French New Wave. And the way he tells stories, because
- 59:03Speaker 4: the French New Wave was all about breaking through barriers
- 59:05Speaker 4: and sort of telling stories in a new way that both...
- 59:10Speaker 4: honored the conventions of a lot of hollywood storytelling but
- 59:13Speaker 4: telling it in a fresh and almost um progressive way
- 59:17Speaker 4: and the way he tells the story and the way
- 59:19Speaker 4: he shoots the frame and the way he does things
- 59:22Speaker 4: is there's almost like it almost feels like you're watching
- 59:24Speaker 4: like improvisational jazz or something Wow. On a visual level.
- 59:28Speaker 4: But but he was one of the first filmmakers when
- 59:31Speaker 4: I was in film school where I was like, oh, shit,
- 59:33Speaker 4: you can do this differently.
- 59:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:35Speaker 4: So, yeah, Breathless was a big one for me. Another
- 59:39Speaker 4: one that blew my mind in that same respect is
- 59:41Speaker 4: this samurai film called Sword of Doom. That is this.
- 59:47Speaker 4: It's on the criteria. It's on criterion.
- 59:49Speaker 3: OK.
- 59:49Speaker 4: Got to see it. And what I loved about that
- 59:52Speaker 4: movie was it was told from the perspective of the villain.
- 59:57Speaker 4: So the villain in the story is the protagonist. Right.
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: And so you are basically stuck with this guy for
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: like 120 minutes, who is just the devil with the sword,
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: you know, and the fucked up thing about that movie,
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: as you get deeper into the movie, you start rooting
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: for him, you know, and he's doing horrible things. You know,
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: this is, he is not a good guy, but because
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: you're stuck with him, you start to go, huh, like
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: I kind of see where he's coming from. I kind
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: of see, you know what I mean? And it's manipulative
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: in the best kind of way as he's laying waste
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: to all these like well-meaning, like heroic samurai, you know?
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: And so to me, that was like, cause I thought
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: before that, you know, I think Scarface is probably the
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: most popular text for this idea where you're like, you're
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: with the villain. Um, but sort of doom like took
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: me there and I was just like, I can't believe I,
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: I didn't know you could do this or you could
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: make me empathize with a monster, you know? And so
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: from a character perspective that blew my mind. Um, and then, um,
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: I mean, this is, this is, this is some typical shit.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: I think the Godfather two is one of the best
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: movies I've ever made. I mean, The way Francis Ford
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: Coppola tells that story where you come out of the
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: first movie and you think you know everything about this family.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: And then the first thing that he does is go
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: to the past. And now you're meeting Marlon Brando's character
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: as this scared child in Sicily. And then you're going
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: on this journey where he... goes to Ellis Island and
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: he talk about isolation. He is alone. He's got nobody,
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: you know, and then he sort of comes up, he
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: becomes Robert De Niro, one of the most beautiful performances
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: in cinema history. And then he builds this empire. And
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: I was just like, I did. And while Coppola is
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: telling this story, he's telling the present story of Michael's
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: Al Pacino character at the same time. And so there's these,
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: there are these beautiful, that sort of mirror each other
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: as you're watching sort of Michael sort of contend with
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: sort of the mafia that he has now taken over
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: while also watching sort of the halcyon days of the
- 1:02:19Speaker 4: mafia that his dad built and created from the ground up.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: So that blew my mind. The idea of telling two
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: stories simultaneously in one movie was to me groundbreaking. And
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: it was just like, Let's let's let's see more of that.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: I mean, you guys are doing that on lanterns right now.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: There's a lot of those different concepts being being applied and.
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: Again, successfully.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: We were talking about that before the show that that
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: fade when he fades back to go to the past.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: The first time I saw that and every time I
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: just think about it, I get chills. It's just like
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the Godfather 2 is just.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: No, it ain't right. It ain't right.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: It ain't right.
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: It ain't right. No, it's not.
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: It's not, you know? And then there's the obvious ones.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: Like to this day, like you look at stuff like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: I mean, when I was a kid and I first
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: saw Star Wars, you know, just the, it's the shot.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: It's the, you know, it's the two sons, you know,
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: and you're just like. white fuck.
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: It could be two sons.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: Just stuff. And so, and there's always, and then, you know,
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: you just, and that's what I love about the medium
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: is when you see those movies and television shows that
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: push us forward, it constantly is reframing the way you think.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: I think about the first time I saw the dark
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: night in theaters and, The first time that, you know,
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: when Batman does the thing on his motorcycle or hits
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: the wall and goes the other way, and you're just like.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: What the fuck?
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: So it's a Fast and Furious level.
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I was like, wait a minute.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: I was like, wait.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: A minute, what? Okay. And then the same goes for
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: like the raid and the raid too, like to see
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: fights the way they shot them in that movie to
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: feel like, because Gareth Evans has this really cool way
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: of shooting fight scenes that I've never seen before. And
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: I'm sure someone else has done it, but he was
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: the first person I see, I saw do a work.
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: When a character gets punched, the camera goes down with it,
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: you know? So you feel like you're actually in the fight,
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: you know?
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: Like there's something so incredibly deeply immersive about that experience
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: that I love and I thought I'd never seen before.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean... This is what I love about
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: this medium. I'm always having my mind blown, but those
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: are just a few. I mean, I could go for hours.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: We have to ask, have you seen Athena? Yeah, have
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: you seen Athena?
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: I haven't seen Athena. I have seen RR, but I
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: haven't seen Athena.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: No, Athena, bruh.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: Because you know what type of timing we on right now,
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: you gotta watch that.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: I'll tell you this.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: One of my best friends, Awate, he's a rapper, writer,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: incredible artist. He calls me up after he, I'd seen
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: it already.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: And I was like, you got to watch this shit.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: He calls me up and for 45 minutes straight, he
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: rants to me. He's so mad.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: And the only reason why, and then after 45 minutes,
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: I'm like, yo, watch it. Chill, bro. Chill. The only
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: reason you're saying this is good. This movie is that
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: goddamn good. And he's like, yes, but it would have
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: been perfect if they just done this.
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: And it's funny.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: But it is because it is.
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: Because after that happened Ben watched it and of course
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: he became the telling me for 45 minutes Tatiana you
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: need to like on my ass about it so I
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: was like okay and there's a making of it on
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Netflix that like the making of it because it's one
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: of them films where it's like I'm sitting there watching
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: it because you know I'm same as you man I
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: went to film school everything you know writer director everything
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: so I'm sitting there like okay they probably did this
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: shot like this and then you watch the making of
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: it and it's like no they did it 10 times
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: harder than.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: That you know like it's the most difficult way you
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: can imagine they did it and that's how they just
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: it like the first 15 minutes is maybe 17 minutes
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: is one shot yeah and it is and they're doing
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: a lot where i'm like how you know it's like
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: you know it's edited but it's like where are they
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: doing the edits where like It's like when you saw
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the raid, you know, when they're passing the camera, you know,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: back through the car, like that sequence when they, you know,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: when the dude's on the outside of the car and
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: he passes the camera through the car to another guy
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: on the other side of the car. It's like, what
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: the fuck? Come on, man.
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: Who would think of this?
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: No, I mean, I mean, another, I'm going to check
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: out Athena. Thank you all for the recommendation. I love
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: this shit. Yeah, I've never even heard of this.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Yeah. That's it's, it's one of my, it became, it's
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: like there was RR. It became one of my favorite movies.
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: What country is it out of?
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: It's out of France.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: Director has a new joint coming with a Chris Evans
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: and you might've seen this video. He did, he did
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: a video a couple months ago where it's like a
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: little something for a Swedish dude. And it's this white
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: guy at the school with all these kids wilding out
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: and doing this, like, syncopated dance routine.
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: Oh enter the void into the void.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Um uh it's the name of the group uh generation
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: is the name of the group yeah yeah they did.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: The soundtrack to athena it's athena is just one man
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: it's one of them like it's one of my all-time
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: he has a new film with chris evans coming out
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: um in a couple months the director oh.
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I can't wait no i mean And then obviously the
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: other one for me was that I can't get out
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: of my head to this day is Mad Max Fury Road.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I stopped talking to, not a friend, more of an associate,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: but I would not stop talking, but I stopped taking
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: his opinion seriously when he told me he didn't like
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: that movie. I can never trust anything he ever said.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: You just brought something. I'm going to ask y'all a question.
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: Each of y'all have to answer it honestly and truthfully.
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: Did you ever lose a friend over an opinion for
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: a movie that they had that you loved?
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: Well, that one right there.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: You did it already.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: You did.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: I'm not saying you lost a friend.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Yeah, but I definitely stopped taking anything they said seriously.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but has there, and maybe it's not even, maybe
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: that's too far. Maybe losing a friend is harsh, but
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: did someone say something about, come on, there's got a movie,
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: TV show, comic book, whatever it is where someone didn't
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: fuck with it and their opinion made you go, I
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: don't know about this person.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: Not me, because they wasn't my friends to begin with.
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: They were more like associates. You know, people that I
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: know very well.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: But nah.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: They got good taste. There's certain friends that I just
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: don't talk to about things. Because I'm like, I don't
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: feel like having to try.
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: I'm not going to try, actually. I'm going to have
- 1:08:47Speaker 6: my thoughts. You have yours. And we're going to be good.
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: One of my big dividing lines is for dating. Megan
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: Thee Stallion and Beyonce. If you're gonna say something about
- 1:08:59Speaker 6: Megan Thee Stallion or Beyonce I know I know where
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: I sit we know where you stand.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: And I'm good I'm yeah that's a good litmus test
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: wait a minute you've been on dates with people who
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: don't fuck with Megan Thee Stallion or Beyonce well not
- 1:09:12Speaker 5: just not fuck with them because that's okay if you're
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: not a fan of the music it's how you proceed.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: With these women and how you react.
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: Especially Megan Especially how you react.
- 1:09:24Speaker 5: To certain things happening to each of these women. What
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: is your reaction to it? And that tells me everything
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: I need to know about you.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: I've definitely had to question a lot of friends over
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: their opinions on Megan, R.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Kelly, men.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Yeah, men. Yeah, I know.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Women do it too.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Women do it too. I have mid-friends who do it.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: I'm like, I can't take y'all seriously anymore.
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's tough.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: It's tough. It's tough. You know what I mean? It's tough. I, yeah, I've, I've,
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: I've definitely, I've definitely been on dates in the past
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: where I went to a movie with somebody and they didn't,
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: I was like, I just don't think this.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: Is going to work.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: This ain't going to work.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: This isn't going to work out.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: I got to slide out of here.
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: And it's not, I mean, look, we're all tied to
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: our opinions. Opinions are right. And I love opinions, but man,
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: It's tough, you know? Because, again, like, if you feel
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: a real connection to something, like a story or a
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: movie or a comic book or a piece of music,
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: and you're with somebody who not only dislikes it but
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: has a really strong allergy to it for whatever reasons
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: they have, like, it's tough. It's tough.
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: Because then it's, like, on a fundamental level. Like, yes,
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: everyone has different opinions and thoughts and stuff, but.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: It's, like.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: Look, I'm joking.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: But it's, like....
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: You're not seeing eye to eye on something very core
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: to my being.
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: And it's just like, I don't know if I can
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: fuck with you like that.
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Right. But again, on the other end, you know, differences
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: make the world go around, you know, like sometimes like,
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: you know, I've dated people who loved reality shows that
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: I didn't really, like, I remember I dated someone who
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: loved law and order special victims unit. Right. And for
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: the longest time I was like, the law and order.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: And then, Because I was already with this person, I
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: think it was like a couple months in, I kind
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: of got into it. I'm not going to lie. I
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: was like, okay, Mariska Hargitay. You know? So sometimes you
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: learn some shit, you know? Yeah.
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: The police procedural drama. I'm going to post a new
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: vantage point on things. However, if you have a loudly wrong...
- 1:11:35Speaker 6: way of like we're just not going to.
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: Jail you're talking about like what you're talking about is
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: like this is probably this is probably veering off into
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: a like your like where you stand is not where
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: I stand.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: And that's probably the problem.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: And that's different that's different than an opinion.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Fury Road is whatever but when you start saying you
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: know Megan Thee Stallion was lying through everything you're like
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: oh god you're one of those you're one of those
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: oh god I gotta.
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: Go That started with, I'm not a hotep, but, you know.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: Grand rising queen. I'm like, I'm out of here. I'm
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: fucking out of here, bro.
- 1:12:15Speaker 6: Speaking of things that are happening, pop culture, things that
- 1:12:18Speaker 6: we just know, you have described yourself as a pop
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: fiend and the gold medalist of men's freestyle mustache twirl.
- 1:12:27Speaker 6: And you did also just name Miami Vice being one
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: of your influential things.
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: I can see it in your shirt. I can see
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: it a little bit in your style, right? Would you
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: say that....
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: Your style infuses your work and vice versa, whether it's fashion,
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: personal grooming, decor, etc. And how does it influence, as
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: you write, does it influence your characters?
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: How do you see that working for you?
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: John had that purple label on.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Yeah. John put that shit on in this episode.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: First of all.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: The turtlenecks.
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: The turtlenecks, too.
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: And that's from the Justice League, too, by the way.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: He looked just like how.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: John was like, I'm coming back to this town letting
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: y'all motherfuckers know. He was like, man, with the number
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: two Caesar face. Oh, my God.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Yo, his fade was fucking impeccable.
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: That was clean.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: I ain't had a fade in forever. And I was like, damn,
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: I want to go.
- 1:13:23Speaker 4: Get a fade. Credit to the barber work on that show.
- 1:13:27Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: Because sometimes we get the wrong barbers on our sets,
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: you know, and they fuck us up, you know.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: You get the Tyler Perry wigs.
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: Ew.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: Hey.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Give you that bowl cut. Put a bowl on your
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: head and just meh.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: Hey.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Hey.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: That's tough. Everybody looking like God.
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: Come on, man.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Like Black Guy Gardner. Black Guy Gardner.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: That was the style for little kids on black sitcoms
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: was the bowl cut.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Put a bowl on their head, sip, and then, you know.
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: I don't know if you watch anime, but Rock Lee.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: That's Rock Lee right there.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Oh my God, from Naruto.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: Just Google that real quick. You know what I'm talking about.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: You know some deep cuts. Okay.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: But no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but yes, please answer.
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: Like, yeah, does your personal style, grooming, decor, anything, like,
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: does that seep into your writing of these characters?
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: I mean, I don't see how it couldn't, you know?
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: I mean, it's, when you grow up watching movies and
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: these people become your icons, you know, you can't help
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: but sort of go, wow, that nigga can dress. Like,
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: I want to fucking, I want to fit like that,
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: you know? And then, like, I mean, yeah, so Miami
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: Vice was a big one for me. You know, my mom,
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: I was always talking about my mom, I got some
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: John issues, I guess, too, but She she she was
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: a fashion reporter for a while. And so she covered
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: fashion for a little year. So I was one of
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: those kids. I couldn't walk outside if I wasn't matching.
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: You know, mom was like, hey, that's not matching. Let's
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: let's match, you know. And so I had, you know,
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: because fashion was a big part of my mom's life,
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: I think by extension, it became part of my life
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: and my brother's life. I mean, my brother, he's got
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: a thing with Balenciaga now and all this other stuff.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: And so. you know uh fashion is definitely a thing
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: that like you know it's another form of expression you
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: know and it's an art you know you get up
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: in the morning like and there are days i'm like
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: i don't want to think about it so i just
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: throw on some black and get going and then there
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: are days where you're like feeling fun you're like have
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: a little fun you know throw some shit together you
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: know yeah dude so you know it's almost like fashion
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: is like this uh it's like this head-to-toe mood ring
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: you know it's like this is how i'm feeling today
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: and i'm gonna dress how i'm feeling and um you know,
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: there are definitely, uh, I would say people that influence
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: like the way I dress, um, for sure. Like, man,
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: like I went through a period, like really fucked with, uh, like, uh,
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: like I was really into like Steve, I was watching
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: all these Steve McQueen movies. And so like, you know,
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: like bullet and Thomas crown affair and all this stuff.
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: And this dude had six shades and his fit, he
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: had the turtlenecks and he had all that stuff. Super clean.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: And so he was one. And then obviously, I mean, as, as,
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: When you talk about like and then when I lived
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: in Philly at the time, I really couldn't afford the fit.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: But like I had to go to the vintage stores
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: to sort of throw it together. But like, you know,
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: like John Richard Roundtree and Shaft, you know, like, yeah,
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: you walk in in that cold weather, you want a
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: long jacket, you know, you want to pop a collar
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: a little bit. So for sure that and then, you know,
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: it's like. Who else? Like a little later on, like,
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: I mean, you know, Brad Pitt's always a clean fit.
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: You know, that dude, he can dress. And Cheadle in
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: the Oceans movies has some clean fits. It's definitely like,
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: I always appreciate costumes and I'm definitely one of those people,
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: it's like when the costume designs aren't up to par
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: with the movie because you've got these beautiful people on screen,
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: it almost feels like a waste, you know? So yeah,
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: fashion is definitely something. I just, yeah, again, I just,
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: as an expression of, I love it. I'm actually working
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: on a project. It's early stages about the fashion world.
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: That's really exciting. So I love that stuff. That's just,
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: you know, and it's such a, it's always, I like
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: worlds that I'm not familiar with as much as I
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: admire fashion. It's a mysterious world to me because it's a,
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: it feels like this exclusive club, you know, and they're
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: all hanging out together and they're all looking good and
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: all that other stuff. So yeah, fashion is definitely a
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: part of it. And then in terms of style, like
- 1:17:17Speaker 4: I just, As it pertains to film and television, I
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: love a stylist. You know, I think John Woo, as
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: when I was a kid, was one of the first
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: filmmakers that really taught me about the idea of what
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: it means to be a stylist as a filmmaker, because
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: he had the slow motion. He had the doves. He
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: had all this stuff. It just it felt like and
- 1:17:39Speaker 4: Tony Scott, too, you know, like True Romance, Man on Fire. uh,
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: Top Gun, like people who really make their style a
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: part of the texture of the movie. I so appreciate,
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: you know, so it's, it's just hand in hand. I mean, it's, it's,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: it's impossible because as a filmmaker or writer or storyteller
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: or an actor, um, when you watch anything, the people
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: that inspire you the most, they're there, they become this
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: sort of compendium of inspiration. So you are as an artist,
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: just the sum of your inspirations, right? So if you
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: admire this, you admire that, you are an expression of
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: all those inspirations and more.
- 1:18:19Speaker 6: Do you notice any of those influences in Lanterns for
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: you as you're writing? Like, do you see yourself using it?
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: I mean, subconsciously, yeah. Right. You know, you just it's
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: not like you necessarily think about it in the moment.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: It's just like the way I think is I think
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: in like because I've seen so many movies or TV shows,
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: I just think in scenes I go, well, that was
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: a great scene. I like how they did that. Let
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: me try my version of that scene. you know um
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: i really like that action sequence let's try our version
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: of that sequence doing this you know um like we
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: like a lot of like i'm sure people watching it
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: will see like uh in in in lights out in
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: episode five we you know i'm you know gita was
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: using visual references from um children of men to yeah Um,
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: no country for old men when Alice outside the diner,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: you know, the way she even positioned the bot, the
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: dead bodies look just like the guys that are outside
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: that truck. When, uh, Josh Brolin comes across that stash
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: of money. And so, I mean, this is the beauty.
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: You just get to be a geek on set. You're like,
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: on any of the shows you work on, I worked
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: on this really cool show called Into the Badlands and
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: it was like a martial arts show. And you got
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: to talk to the fight choreographers and you were like, hey,
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: you remember, and it's so fun because you feel like
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: you've met your people all over again. You don't feel
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: like you're talking some strange language to someone. You're just
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: like talking like we talk now. You're like, oh, you
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: remember that scene and enter the dragon. Like we want
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: to do a bird and they're like, I got you buddy.
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: I've seen it. I worked on this show called Banshee
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: for Cinemax and Jonathan Tropper, the showrunner is a huge
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: action movie geek. I mean, this guy, We had so
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: much fun. We would talk about a fight scene and
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: he'd just pull up his computer. We'd watch Jean-Claude Van
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: Damme shit, Steven Seagal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Lee, all this stuff.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: It's just like, again, we're all just stealing from each other.
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: That's what good artists do, right? You steal. They steal.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Can you believe that Mikayla Cole is doing Bloodsport? Bro.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: I cannot wait.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: Mikayla, yes.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: I cannot wait. I'm so, like, intrigued. Bloodsport is, like,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: You know, one of those.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Sacred text.
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: Yeah, sacred text. I know it by heart, man. I've seen,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: you know, every fight I could probably tell you exactly,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: you know, every shot, how it goes.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: And the fact that she's a huge fan is so
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: hilarious to me.
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: She's going to kill it.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Her mind is crazy, bro.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: She's fucking brilliant. And so it's like, I can't, I'm
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: so like, yo, what is this going to be? I
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: cannot believe it. I'm just like, where, like, you know,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: because it's like, because she's done, I mean, what she's
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: done is so different than Bloodsport.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: So it's like, you know, what?
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: But at the same time, it makes total sense.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Because there's so much, first of all, I love her
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: as an actress. Yes. Like, there's so much physicality that
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: they put into their work that it completely makes sense. And,
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: I don't know if she's been studying fight choreography or whatever,
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: but I cannot wait to see what she does with that.
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: It's going to be incredible.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: Absolutely incredible. All right.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: One last one before we get to our rapid fire questions.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: And this is something that I just want to commend you.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: You know, we talked to Vanessa about it and one
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: of the greatest things about this show. And like we were,
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: you even mentioned earlier is like, you know, one, it
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: gives us all these different things to talk about. Like
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: we've been talking forever. Now we could keep going forever,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: but it's like, And something that I realized about it
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: is that it's blackness, you know, it's because when you
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: insert this stuff into a regular, any regular genre fiction, whatever,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: it just brings a level of humanity and sides and
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: viewpoints that you don't normally get to see. So you
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: get all these conversations and like, you know, some of
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: the things that I've loved the most, like in this
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: latest episode was, john you know arguing with his brother
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: over funding his mixtape and like you know that felt
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: real like you know maybe you funded a mixtape in
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: your time and then you know we got our nick
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: you know we we got a almost a negro please
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: yeah you know and it's just these moments so i
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: just want to thank you and you know are you really.
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Responsible for the first negro please in the dcu.
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: I mean, that was something that Vanessa and I were
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: talking about together. And again, I can't remember, but it
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: was something about like, John's got to go there. Again,
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: we're mining for the truth here. And he's having, I mean,
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: in that episode, he's having a really hard day. And
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: there is that thing when you're doing it where you're like,
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: has any superhero show done some shit like that? Where
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: it's just a little thing that you know is so
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: authentic to your own experience. And you're like, are people
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: gonna get this? And the response has been so overwhelming
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: that I'm so glad we did do it. And it just,
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: but it also just felt, it wasn't to do it
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: just to do it. It felt natural to the scene
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: and it felt natural to where John was in that
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: moment where he was.
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: Like, yeah like if you don't call me on my.
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: Phone right like I'm up to my I'm up to
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: I'm up to here right now you know what I
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: mean like we've all been there with family you know
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: what I mean we're like you're in the middle of
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: something and you just need this one thing to happen
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: and that person makes an excuse and you're like.
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: Man like What the fuck?
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: Are you serious?
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: No.
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: And so I just, I'm so glad. I'm so glad
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: people love that moment because there was so talk about intention.
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: There was so much intention.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: You know, it was really important. And I think it
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: was really important to John because he's not just the group.
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: He's not just John Stewart. He's not just the Green Lantern.
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: He's an African-American man living in America. And so it's like,
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: he's got to talk like that, you know? And so
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: it was really important. that, that we, that, that came across,
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: you know? Yeah.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: I'm glad that that was the conversation and then that
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: it just went through as well because it was, again,
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: very genuine moment. Um, it probably was maybe the first
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: nigga please movement in, uh, for the superheroes. They did
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: mention that they did use the word in, um, Black Lightning.
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: Robert Townsend's character was talking about Black Lightning and called
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: him a house nigger.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: Oh, shit.
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: Meteor Man.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: I remember in the A, Robert Townsend gets all the flowers.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Look, I tell people all the time, hollywood.
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: Shuffle hollywood shuffle.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Thank you brother you are it's like it's it's sacred
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: text if you if you want to work in hollywood
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: if you want to i don't give a fuck what
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: you want to do in life hollywood shuffles should be
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: in your top 10 movies it's just like it's yeah.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: Do the jerry curl come.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: On man how how it starts shrinking every time like
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: they cut away and then they go back to them
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: and it's smaller and smaller it's like What the fuck, Robert?
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: I screamed on him. He came out of a club
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: in DC once. I was handing out flyers and I
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: just like probably threw the flyers on the ground and
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: sat there being like, you know, for 10 minutes, talk
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: about Hollywood shuffle to this man.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: Wow. No, he's, he's, he's one of the, he's one
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: of the, he's one of the goats. He's one of
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: the OGs. Like, God, I love that movie. I got
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: to go back and watch that.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Oh God. I made Tatiana watch it, you know?
- 1:25:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: Incredible.
- 1:25:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: Portia, if you haven't seen Hollywood Shuffle, you've got to
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: correct that ASAP.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: I've seen Meteor Man.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: No, but got to see Hollywood Shuffle.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: You know what's crazy about Hollywood Shuffle, too? I'm sure
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: this is very intentional, too. I saw so much of
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: Hollywood Shuffle in Atlanta. Yes. In Atlanta, where it was
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: just like, you know Donald loves Robert Townsend. I was
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: just like, again, this is what you love when you're,
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: you're like, you see artists taking their influences and putting
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: it in their own soup, you know? And like, I
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: was like, man, um, I thought about Hollywood shuffle a lot.
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: Cause that's, that movie sort of seamlessly is a just
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: fucking hilarious, but the way it talks about what it
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: is to be a black actor in Hollywood, um, and
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: dealing with all the stuff that he dealt with at
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: the time.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: It's a, that's a, man and it just doesn't change
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: that's what you know her it's just to this day
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: if you watch hollywood shuffle it it's everything they're talking
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: about is still relevant you know it's just.
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: So sad too man this movie has a date this
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: movie hasn't aged a fucking year.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Man no yeah yeah it's.
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: Weird i mean it's weird it's weird i mean yeah
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: no it's it's weird to think about even like You know,
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: when you work with younger people who are like, oh, man,
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: we're doing can you believe how much we're doing out here?
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: I'm like, do you remember the 90s?
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: When we were really doing it.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: Wow. Like a different world, you know, like hanging with Mr. Cooper,
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: Family Matters, Cosby Show, all this shit was like. prime time.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: UPN is a black-ass market.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: UPN!
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: Come on.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: We had BET, UPN.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: You know, we had, like, several networks, plus we were
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: killing it on NBC. The WB.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: Remember?
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: One whole side of the WB.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Now we got, you know... I mean, Fresh Prince?
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: My God. One of my favorite Fresh Prince episodes to
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: this day is the Bell Bib DeVoe. Do you remember
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: the Bell Bib DeVoe episode? Mm-hmm.
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: I don't remember the episode.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: Oh, I mean, we could go on, man. Like, yeah,
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: it really does start to, you look back, you like,
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: I know there was a lot of terrible things happening
- 1:28:15Speaker 4: back then, by the way, you know, obviously, you know,
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: race riots and Ronnie King, all this shit. But man,
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: like I think back to even just the, like the
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: music scene, it was truly this Renaissance. I mean, it
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: was like this, I mean, the internet was new. Everything
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: just felt brand. It was just like, It almost did
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: feel like you were in this so this like time
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: of promise and like everybody was doing their thing everybody
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: has something going on and um it's not to say
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: that doesn't feel like that now but it truly at
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: least in through my like you know young eyes who
- 1:28:47Speaker 4: were very naive at the time it just felt like
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: such a special time you.
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: Know it's a different texture like it's a feeling like
- 1:28:53Speaker 6: it's like not just aesthetically just as a feeling in
- 1:28:56Speaker 6: the air just completely different yeah yeah.
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: Still waiting for the next boomerang, the boomerang type of movie.
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: I mean, boomerang is like... I have a white friend
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: telling me, when do we get another boomerang? You know,
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: like a movie like that, you know, where it's just like.
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: A Black-owned company, you know, and brothers and sisters out there, like,
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: doing well, being successful, you know. I mean, you see
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: it on TV, but, like, it wasn't... It's not on
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: film like it is.
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: It's not on film, yeah.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: Like, it was. Like, that was... We were... I just...
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: I mean, talk about feeling centered, you know, like, wow.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: I've also come to terms that, like, when you mentioned
- 1:29:34Speaker 5: this stuff like that, like, that required a literal certain time,
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: certain place in time.
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: Like, when you talk about economics.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: You're talking about society, politics, everything had to be that
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: way for that to exist. And now that that's gone, like,
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: not to say that you'll never get something else that's
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: just as great. It's just that specific flavor, that specific texture,
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: you'll never be able to touch again because that time
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: no longer exists anymore.
- 1:29:58Speaker 3: So, and it's sad, but it's also just like, but it's.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: Also like, you know, then at the same time we
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: have things like, I, like I would say, you know,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: we have things like lanterns or, you know, one of
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: my other ones from recent is Andor, you know, where
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: I'm like, yes, which is why I'm like, I never
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: had no, I never had no Andor growing up. You know,
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: I'm the greatest Star Wars thing in the world. And
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Andor to me is the greatest Star Wars thing ever made.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: And there was nothing like that. You know, there was
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: nothing close to that as a kid.
- 1:30:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: I would have been a different person if I'd grown
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: up with Andor. I can't imagine, you know?
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, that's another thing going back to the
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: sort of influences and the sort of things where you're like,
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: it reframed. I mean, what Tony did with Andor reframed
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: how I saw that galaxy. It was just.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: And it's like, you know how it is? It's like
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: the little details that go a long way when he's...
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: I think it's in the first three, four episodes when
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: he's hiding... from one of the TIE fighters and it
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: kind of flies over. And it was just like, I've
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: never seen it that way. And it's like one TIE
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: fighter and you're like, I've never seen it shot that way.
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: And it was the scariest the Empire ever was to me.
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: You were like, oh, these motherfuckers ain't fucking, this is terrifying.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: This isn't a fantasy. this is some authoritarian, terrifying black
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: bullshit that these guys are caught up in.
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: The way they were meant to be looked at. You know,
- 1:31:18Speaker 5: it wasn't just like, oh, the bad guys. No, this
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: is an authoritarian dictatorship that will kill you on sight.
- 1:31:25Speaker 6: But that's what reframes your mind of what you've seen before. Like,
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: you know, now that you're like, I've been seeing it
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: from the point of view of someone who is always
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: going to win someone who's never really had to worry
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: about the same things that the lay person in the
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: universe has to. And now that I'm seeing it from
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: like just any person, not the hero, not a Jedi,
- 1:31:42Speaker 6: just a regular person. It's like a completely different understanding
- 1:31:46Speaker 6: of it. So of course your brain is just kind
- 1:31:48Speaker 6: of like, wait, do you?
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: And you know, with what you know about Darth Vader,
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: and palpatine but never actually seeing them right it's like
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: this sort of this sort of unseen specter of like
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: evil and menace and and and power you're just they're
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: they're that much scarier for it you know like it's
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: like jaws you don't see the sharp right you're just
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: like yo.
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: The music and then to see the evil just in
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: in regular people too because that's something with darth vader
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: and the emperor you know they're like wizards you know
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: there's some space wizards so it's like okay whatever but
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: when you see the evil and bureaucracy and you see
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: you know like the slow not even the slow turn
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: to fascism like just how fascism just continually digs its
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: claws in deeper it's like and or is man yeah
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: uh we we ran up on gilroy and like we're
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: still trying to get him on the show but i
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: screamed on him you know we were like i let
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: him know you know motherfucker you did that yeah no.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: He really did he really did that was that i
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: i am i am i i share the opinion with
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: you as well like that's probably the best thing of
- 1:32:59Speaker 4: star wars i've seen next to empire and maybe empire
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: just because of like nostalgia.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: Yeah you know but yeah.
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: Wow i mean andor is was a whole ass wow
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: i mean yeah no i'm just fucking yeah.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Or like you said, Atlanta, like, you know, Atlanta is
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: just something like a friend of mine.
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: He's never seen it. He's a black man. I know.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: And he's, you know, and so I'm about to do
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: a podcast where he watches the first time. And then,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: you know, I watched an episode and we because I'm like,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: how have you never seen this? And this is just
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: such an important thing, you know, that.
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: And those actors. I mean, I know Lakeith's kind of
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: a friend and the stuff that Lakeith and Brian. Donald,
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: all those guys were doing like, I love, you know,
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: I love about Lakeith in that show, especially was that he,
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: he embodied a version of a, of a, of a,
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: of a black person that I'd never seen on television before, you.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: Know, everybody really.
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: I mean, that's actually, thank you.
- 1:33:53Speaker 2: It's true.
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: You know, it was just like, wow. Like he, he
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: was doing shit in that where I was like, It's
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: almost like he's almost like Floyd in True Romance, but
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: it's almost like, but he's black. It was just like, yo.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: He's like this mystical figure who might not really be there.
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: Yeah. And they're like, yo, what does he do? I
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: talked to him.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: It's this whole show, A Dream of His.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: You know, it's all this.
- 1:34:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: And then like, you know, Tyree, like being an insecure
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: gangster rapper, you know, it's This is the.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: Guy with the heart of gold, right?
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Who really doesn't believe in himself, you know, but he's
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: putting on this front all the time. And yeah.
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: Yeah. And I, you know what I like, what was the,
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: I liked the season where I know a lot of
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: people didn't love it. I liked the season where they
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: went to Europe. I thought that was fun.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: There's not, there's not a minute of Atlanta that I
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: don't think is the greatest show ever made. You know, that's,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: I don't, I don't understand what people are talking about.
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: It's like, you know what? There's not everything is like
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: you said, it's intentional. Like, when people started bugging out
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: about the last season when they weren't focused on the characters,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: I'm like, we're losing recipes, man.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: Like, what? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: This is just, this is perfection.
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: You know, every minute is perfection.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: There's not, yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: It's so good.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: Yeah. All right.
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: Well, you have, you know, this has been one of
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: the best ever.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: I can't even say you survived the interview segment, but
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: we do have our brat segment, our rapid fire questions.
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: So Justin, are you ready?
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: All right, let's go.
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: All right. I probably know the answer, but we're going
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: to do it anyways. Star Wars or Star Trek?
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: Star Wars. Oh, yeah.
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: Winning by the way you were yeah you both told
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: that and also you were attached to a star wars
- 1:35:43Speaker 5: project would you be do you want to get back
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: on that will you have an opportunity to get back
- 1:35:50Speaker 5: on that.
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: If they'll have me yeah sure why not you know
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: i had a great time with damon um telling the
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: story that we were telling and it was oh it
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: was special it was real that hurts um and it
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: it hurts in the best kind of way because as
- 1:36:06Speaker 4: much as it hurts that it didn't, it didn't actually
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: come to fruition. Knowing the story that we were telling
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: with the intentions that we have with the deep, like
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: I mean, long conversations about what we could do with
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: it and the characters we were building. I mean, we spent,
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: we spent two and a half years on that project.
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: And so it was, it was a true labor of love.
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: And I am, immensely proud of what we what we
- 1:36:37Speaker 4: created you know it's sometimes these things happen you know
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: but uh but but i still treasure that time with
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: that with with damon and the other uh and and
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: we also had uh as uh who helped us along
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: a little who helped us along um in that process
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: her name was reina mcclendon she's a writer as well
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: um it was it was real special you know it's
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: just To have an opportunity, because it was one of
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: those things like Star Wars is something as a kid
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: you grow up with, you idolize. And then for one day,
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: for someone to call you, I mean, Damon just hit
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: me up one day. He's like, hey, you want to
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: run a Star Wars thing? My God.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: My God today. My jealousy levels right now.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: You're like, how do you, how do you, like, there's
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: only one answer to that question, you know?
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: What? And to go on that journey with him to this,
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: I mean, we're closer friends because of that experience. And
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: I treasure him and that experience to this day, even
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: if it didn't end the way we wanted it to.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: It was beautiful while it was happening.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: And I'll always love Star Wars.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Always.
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: And you kind of.
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: Go ahead. No, no, no. So, yeah, this is all
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: to say if they would ever have me, absolutely. They
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: would do it. Yeah.
- 1:37:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: And aesthetically, you're giving a Lando Calrissian kind of thing
- 1:37:58Speaker 5: right now. So I would say that you're well suited.
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: Absolutely. Thank you. Thank you. Hey, shout out to. Yeah.
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: I mean, speaking of which, I was I got to
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: know a friend of mine now, Justin Simeon on that
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: because he was doing. Yes.
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:38:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: The show at the time and the shit that he
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: was doing with Lando.
- 1:38:19Speaker 3: Oh, man. The things we could have had.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: Didn't we almost.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Have it all?
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: Next question. Which color of the ring would you want
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: to receive if you were a lantern?
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: Green.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: Okay. And that's willpower, right?
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: Yeah. That's willpower. But I had to think about it
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: for a second.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: Oh, what?
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: You're going to get the red? You got to get
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: the anger management out?
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: I'm going to get the green. I'm going to get
- 1:38:52Speaker 4: the green.
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: Okay. Jon Stewart or Hal Jordan?
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: Jon Stewart.
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: Do you like Hal Jordan? I love Hal Jordan.
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: No, I love Hal Jordan. I think Kyle is... First
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: of all, it was one of those things when we
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: were writing him, we hadn't cast the character yet. And
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: you sort of read it. And when I was reading...
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: Chris Damon and Tom's script, you know, I had certain
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: actors in mind, but once we realized that we got Kyle,
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: it was like, he's the guy.
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: Like, that's it.
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: It just, he is Al Jordan. And he's done incredible
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: work with that. And so I love Al. I mean,
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: he cracks me up.
- 1:39:36Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:39:36Speaker 5: I'm very glad to hear that. You know, one of
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: the writers of the show does not have a personal
- 1:39:40Speaker 5: vendetta against Al.
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: Look at that!
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I gotta, I gotta be honest y'all like,
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: and I know this is rapid fire and I'm violating
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: the rules right now, but you know, we love, we
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: love how, you know what I mean? Like this idea.
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: And again, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I,
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: I don't, and this goes for any character you write.
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: I don't personally go into a project writing someone I hate.
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: That's just like, that's just not in my, that's not
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: in my, that's not on my tool belt, you know, even,
- 1:40:12Speaker 4: even characters that I find, I look, I are supposed
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: to be loathing and despicable. You find a way, because
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: if you can't find a way to empathize with them,
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: you're not going to find a way to write them effectively,
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: you know, and with, with, with depth. And so, and that's,
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: those are, those are villains. I'm talking about how Jordan,
- 1:40:33Speaker 4: I love how Jordan, you know, and this idea that
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: we hate how Jordan, because, We're writing him a certain
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: way or he's too cranky or this and that. I mean,
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: the guy's been Green Lantern for decades. Why wouldn't he be?
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: It just felt like that's where he is at this
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: point in his career. You know, like you do a
- 1:40:48Speaker 4: job long enough.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: It's not pretty.
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: It ain't pretty.
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: Who is your favorite member of the Wu-Tang Clan?
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: Inspector Dad.
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Didn't expect that one.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: Yeah. Inspector Jack. He's my favorite lyricist. I mean, I
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: love them all, but as a lyricist, he is, he's
- 1:41:13Speaker 4: a fucking Ronin.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: This is true.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: And he got played because his first album would have
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: probably been a lot better if not.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: For RZA's flood.
- 1:41:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: Yeah. I still, yeah.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: Couldn't we had it all.
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: You gotta, you gotta cue the way to use it.
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: You know, soundbite.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: Um, Yeah.
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: During episode six, John is pitching his arcs to the
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: city officials, the builders who want to build a stable
- 1:41:41Speaker 5: of people. They asked John if he's up for the
- 1:41:44Speaker 5: challenge to pitch it to the military leader.
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: And he says, yes, all the way up. Was that
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: a Fat Joe Remy Ma reference?
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: What's that? I'm not going to lie and pretend that
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: it was, but.
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: You could. You could.
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: I could.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: I could.
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: I can't remember.
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: At what point that was, that was, cause that, you
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: would have to ask Damon. You have to ask Damon
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: that question. Cause Damon wrote, that was a scene. The
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: way we work in the room is we, we sort
- 1:42:14Speaker 4: of split up the scenes when you're co-writing and Damon
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: wrote that scene. So, but that's a good call. I
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: didn't even, I didn't even think about that.
- 1:42:25Speaker 3: This is what we do on the show, man.
- 1:42:28Speaker 6: So we've talked a bit about your different projects that
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: you've worked on. Of the stories that you've written for,
- 1:42:33Speaker 6: which would you most like to live within and which
- 1:42:35Speaker 6: would you least likely want to live within?
- 1:42:38Speaker 3: Bonus points, you tell us who.
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: You would be, what kind of role you would play
- 1:42:41Speaker 6: within that story.
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: Stories I would love to live within would probably be...
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: I probably have to say Into the Badlands only because
- 1:43:04Speaker 4: that probably means that I would be some kind of
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: martial artist with some kind of prowess. And, you know,
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: I could get rough and tumble. But also at the
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: same time, I wouldn't want to live because it's the apocalypse,
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: you know? So that's a good question. You know what?
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: I'll say the one I would like to live in
- 1:43:26Speaker 4: the most is Counterpart. because there will be two of me.
- 1:43:31Speaker 4: And have you guys seen counterpart?
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: Oh, counterpart for the JK Simmons.
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Yes. So man, I started it and then I realized
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: it was canceled. I got mad and I didn't want
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: to watch the work.
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: It was so good.
- 1:43:43Speaker 4: I'm so proud of that. So that's, that's just created
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: by my, um, so that show is created by my,
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: by my dear friend of mine, Justin Marks, who create,
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: he just, he's a, he's on Shogun now. He's the
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: runner of Shogun. And, um, Counterpart is one of those shows.
- 1:43:57Speaker 4: So it's about sort of the cold war between two
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: parallel universes. Okay. For, for every, for, so there's, there's
- 1:44:05Speaker 4: two Porsches, there's two Tatianas, there's two, you know, Ben's
- 1:44:09Speaker 4: just like, it's that thing. And so, and it's about
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: this sort of spy agency that sits on top of
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: this sort of the bridge between these two worlds and, Oh,
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: so so in one world, you're living one life and
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: the other one you're living in completely different life. And
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: it sort of asks the questions all of it sort
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: of central question is so much about the sliding doors
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: of it all. If I had gone down this road,
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: what would my life look like and vice versa? And so.
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: And it's all at the center of it. J.K. Simmons
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: plays this sort of low level spy who gets caught
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: up in this sort of Cold War that's going on
- 1:44:42Speaker 4: and discovers that, you know, he didn't even know he's
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: working for an agency that was overseeing this thing. He
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: didn't know there were two worlds. And so he gets
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: caught up in this and away he goes. And J.K.
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: discovers the other version of him. So he I mean,
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: the other version of sort of like hard and special
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: ops stuff that he is so terrified of and. It's
- 1:45:02Speaker 4: a really fun show. So I would say that would
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: be the world I want to live in the most
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: because I would love to meet the other version of me.
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: Of you, right.
- 1:45:09Speaker 4: And see where that guy went. And maybe I would
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: regret it. Maybe I would regret it. But my curiosity is,
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: I would have to listen to my gut and go,
- 1:45:22Speaker 4: I'd have to check it out.
- 1:45:23Speaker 3: Well, shit, I would have watched that show.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: I don't know about it. I watched the pilot and
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: probably a couple episodes after that.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: I loved it.
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: But then I was like, oh, man.
- 1:45:32Speaker 6: I read a book with a similar startup premise. It
- 1:45:35Speaker 6: was a parallel universe setup. And it was kind of
- 1:45:38Speaker 6: like there was a travel component related to it, like
- 1:45:41Speaker 6: a space-time travel component. into the other universe and what
- 1:45:45Speaker 6: they find out is that like the rich people have
- 1:45:48Speaker 6: the ability to like use it the most and so
- 1:45:51Speaker 6: they're kind of like killing off all the poor people
- 1:45:54Speaker 6: in the different universes to make to power the thing
- 1:45:57Speaker 6: more and it just kind of it's kind of apocalyptic
- 1:45:59Speaker 6: it's kind of it's like it's called a space between
- 1:46:01Speaker 6: worlds it's really it's really fun to read that's some
- 1:46:04Speaker 6: wild shit.
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: Thanks for the rep yeah um the world i would
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: not want to live in even though I loved working
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: on the show is the strain. Cause I'm trying to
- 1:46:12Speaker 4: get by vampire viruses and all kinds of terrible things happen.
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: I'm good with that, you know, but that's credit to Guillermo,
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: Guillermo Carlton and Chuck Hogan, those guys, that was, that
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: was actually my first TV job. And it was, it
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: was an incredible experience. I learned so much from those.
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: I got to shadow Guillermo for a couple of days as,
- 1:46:34Speaker 4: as he directed this, the episode.
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: And, Wow.
- 1:46:39Speaker 4: The stories are true. That guy's a genius. He's, he is,
- 1:46:41Speaker 4: he is a one of one. Um, and, um, no,
- 1:46:45Speaker 4: it was so funny. I, this is a little tidbit
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: about Guillermo. So there was a day we were choreographing
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: a fight scene. And, uh, I remember talking to the
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: stunt man and, you know, Guillermo sent me, I was like, Oh,
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: go talk to the stunt man and figure out this
- 1:46:56Speaker 4: fight scene. I'm like, okay, great. So I'm talking to
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: the stunt man and we spend hours like choreographing this
- 1:47:02Speaker 4: fight scene and it's really elaborate and there's all these
- 1:47:05Speaker 4: different moves. And the stuntmen finally present the fight scene
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: to Guillermo. And Guillermo goes, or you could just grab
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: the gun and shoot the guy in the head. And
- 1:47:18Speaker 4: that was the scene. And it was like, and we
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: look at the stuntmen, they were like, let's shoot it.
- 1:47:26Speaker 5: Sometimes the best answer is the most simplest one.
- 1:47:30Speaker 4: Sometimes it's the simplest one I had, but that was
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: a fun one, but I do not want to live
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: in that world. No, thank you. Ballad.
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: When you walk into a room, what shit do you
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: just want to come blasting on, you know, let you
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: know I'm here?
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:47:42Speaker 3: Think about like on WWE, a wrestler walks out, their
- 1:47:45Speaker 3: music hits.
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: Probably just because it's the song that's most in my
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: head on any given basis. And it's enduring is Warning
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: by Biggie.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: Why is that most in your head?
- 1:47:59Speaker 4: Yo! No, bro. I can't explain it, bro.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: You feed the Roddy's gunpowder?
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: Yo, it's just something about that song, man. And I
- 1:48:08Speaker 4: don't mean anybody harm, but man, like, that's a song
- 1:48:13Speaker 4: when I was a kid, when I was trying to, like,
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: hide myself up like for some reason that was the
- 1:48:17Speaker 4: song you know and it just it just never.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: Left Man, when I realized that he was doing both voices,
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: you know, that's when I was like, oh, Biggie different,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: you know? Look at him. Look at him.
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: Look at the thing that's zooming into his head.
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: That's when I was like.
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: Who the fuck is this?
- 1:48:35Speaker 4: Paging me at 5.46 in the morning. Back at the morning.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: Now I'm yawning. Wipe the cold off my eyes.
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: See who this is paging me and why.
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: Why?
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: It's like a pop from the barbershop. It's like, what the, yeah.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: What the fuck again?
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: I remember one time I, it was this other rapper.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: I want, I can't remember his name, but he was,
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: he was breaking down how rap, you know, starts off
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: and it's like, you know, ABC two plus two equals four.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: And then he was like, and then you get to
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: warning and it's like writing out an algebra equation. Who
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: the fuck is this? Page five, 46 in the morning.
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: And it's like, He's doing these double internal rhymes and
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: then his rhythm is one thing. And it's like.
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: That's science, man.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:49:22Speaker 2: No, it's goddamn genius.
- 1:49:27Speaker 5: In any medium, books, TV, film, whatever. What character's demise
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: hurt you the most?
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: I'm trying to think the character that made me cry
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: the most. Broke my heart. Can I give you two answers?
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:49:40Speaker 4: When I was a kid and this is me telling
- 1:49:43Speaker 4: the truth because I'm going to be honest. Muppet Christmas
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: Carol Tiny Tim just broke me when I was a kid.
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: Broke me. I know he came back, but, you know,
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: he was dead for me. You know, it was Kermit's kid.
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: I don't know why. That was the first time I
- 1:50:01Speaker 4: cried in a theater.
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: It broke me.
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: I love that you're talking about the superior version of
- 1:50:08Speaker 6: A Christmas Carol.
- 1:50:09Speaker 3: Not just any version. It's the Muppets.
- 1:50:12Speaker 4: It's the Muppet Christmas Carol.
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: Yes, thank you.
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: That one definitely, definitely broke me. And then the other one,
- 1:50:22Speaker 4: The Demise That Killed, that really fucked me up was, wow,
- 1:50:25Speaker 4: there's so many. Probably Denzel and Man on Fire.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: Creasy.
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: Creasy.
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: Creasy bear.
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: Creasy bear.
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: Oh, don't.
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: Oh, I can't.
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Oh, my heart. That broke me. And then, you know,
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: like Maximus, that broke me too. I mean, I should
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: have saw that one coming, but for some reason.
- 1:50:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: Yeah. He was kind of dead at the beginning. Yeah,
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: he was just like kind.
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: Of dead at the beginning. All right. um but yeah
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: maybe he's trying to get out of this one yeah
- 1:51:01Speaker 4: no oh um yeah and then uh as a kid
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: um uh death of superman uh comic book wise.
- 1:51:10Speaker 5: Comic yeah that was hard those are good ones yeah
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: yeah we ask the hard questions here at for all
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: nerds yeah that's.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: What we do here i'll never forget reading that comic
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: i was like y'all y'all are really gonna do this.
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: Hell, man, they killed Optimus Prime. They're going to kill
- 1:51:26Speaker 3: your nigga, too.
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: Damn.
- 1:51:29Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: We should have known by then.
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: Should have known.
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: I mean, they said it. It's in the title.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely.
- 1:51:37Speaker 3: You're like, for sure. They don't mean that.
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: I was like, this is a gimmick. This is a
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: marketing gimmick, y'all.
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: This is Ben talking about all over again. Hell, really, Dan?
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: Mine is Alpha Flight, and it's on the cover. It says,
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: in this issue, someone dies. And I'm like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: And then, you know, they killed someone and I'm like,
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: Michael Jackson, me.
- 1:52:05Speaker 6: A good story gets you just like we are in
- 1:52:08Speaker 6: Lanterns and getting hurt by things. We kind of got
- 1:52:12Speaker 6: off of music, but I want to go back a
- 1:52:13Speaker 6: little bit. What is your favorite Tame Impala song?
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: And why is it on Currents?
- 1:52:21Speaker 4: Oh, man. Uh, my favorite Tame Impala song was the
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: first time. Cause I love all, I love a lot
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: of them, but, um, solitude is bliss. That song hits.
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: Have you seen the video for solitude is bliss? Okay.
- 1:52:40Speaker 4: Go back and watch that video. That video is fire.
- 1:52:44Speaker 4: And you want it like thematically, we're talking about solitude.
- 1:52:47Speaker 4: We're talking about isolation. Like that's, that's, that's a visual,
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: but what the director does is a visual manifest. It's
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: a perfect encapsulation and manifestation of like what it means
- 1:52:59Speaker 4: to feel like just this complete and utter devastating, like
- 1:53:03Speaker 4: sense of solitude. And it's a beautiful song, you know,
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: when it goes hard. I love, I love that song. Okay. Okay.
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: We know more we're for all nerds.
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: Since we're doing music I wanted to ask what is
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: Vanessa had the Outkast episode what is your favorite Quimini,
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: Southern Playlistic.
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: Stankonia or.
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: AT Aliens alright this is a multi-pronged answer I would say,
- 1:53:43Speaker 4: I would say AT aliens, but speaker box and the
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: love below.
- 1:53:49Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: Oh, okay. Okay.
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie.
- 1:53:53Speaker 4: I'm not going to lie. Go with the double. I
- 1:53:56Speaker 4: fuck with the double album.
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:53:59Speaker 4: It's like, it's like a, it's a double feature, you know? And, and,
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: and there's no song on here. There's no song to me.
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: I read an album on like skip ability to say,
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: if I'm not skipping a song, That's a perfect album.
- 1:54:13Speaker 3: That's an album.
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: Because there'll be albums where, to me, the best album
- 1:54:17Speaker 4: is not necessarily the album with the best song on it.
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: it's the album that has the consistency of great songs.
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:54:24Speaker 3: It was like curated in a certain way.
- 1:54:25Speaker 6: So kind of like, you just want to keep listening
- 1:54:28Speaker 6: to the album.
- 1:54:29Speaker 3: I got to go back and listen.
- 1:54:31Speaker 2: To Speakerbots again.
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: Cause Love Below is my, is incredible, but Speakerbots, I
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: only know like, you know, some of the joints on it.
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: Oh, it hits, it hits, it slaps.
- 1:54:40Speaker 4: It's real good. And, and, and, and to that, to
- 1:54:42Speaker 4: that end, I also love, I think the best albums
- 1:54:46Speaker 4: and you know, this, we all know this because we
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: see it often a lot now, When you get 10 tracks,
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: you know those tracks are going to be fire. Less
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: is more. If you get an album that took three
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: years to come out and you get 10 tracks.
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: You know it's going to be fire.
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: True indeed.
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:55:02Speaker 6: 100%.
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:55:03Speaker 3: Okay. This might be the last one. If you have
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: any one superpower, what would it be?
- 1:55:08Speaker 4: I'm going to go with, I'm going to go with telepathy.
- 1:55:13Speaker 4: I think I'm going to go with telepathy.
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: Ooh. Yeah.
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. I fuck with Xavier, man. You know, like
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: professor X shit. Like there's some, I don't know. It's
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: just like, I think that maybe that's the writer in me.
- 1:55:26Speaker 4: You just want to know what's on everybody's mind and
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: who they are. And, you know, there's just something about that,
- 1:55:33Speaker 4: that like, um, I mean, and I mean, as people,
- 1:55:36Speaker 4: we have it, you know, it's like when I see a,
- 1:55:38Speaker 4: you know, when I nod to another brother down the street,
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: that's telepathy. Right. You know, when you see each other
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: at the mall, you see each other at the airport.
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: In a foreign country, you see each other, you do that.
- 1:55:47Speaker 4: That's telepathy.
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: We do speak to each other.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: Have you ever seen the reboot? And I tell everybody
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: how great this show is. The reboot of Saved by
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: the Bell.
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: No, no.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: All right. I didn't watch the original that much. The
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: reboot is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen.
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: And there's this one scene where there is a Latina woman.
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: There's a Black dude and a Latina girl. They're both
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: in high school. And the Black dude's gotten in trouble
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: and he's in the principal's office. And a Latino woman
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: runs in and she's like, and it's like, you know, subtitles,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: what happened? And he's.
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: Like, racism happened.
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: It's just, he just does this like, What do you
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: think happened? It's like the pure telepathy between people of color.
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: Racism happened.
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: So I guess we already have that superpower, but to
- 1:56:40Speaker 4: have that level of it on a superhero level, that
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: would be on an extraordinary level. Yeah. That would be insane.
- 1:56:50Speaker 6: You said as a writer, and it made me think about,
- 1:56:52Speaker 6: there's been discourse, I don't know if you ever watched
- 1:56:55Speaker 6: or read the manga for Apothecary Diaries, but they've shown,
- 1:56:59Speaker 6: because the main character, she's all about poisons and stuff,
- 1:57:02Speaker 6: and she's always thinking. You're seeing her thought bubbles most
- 1:57:07Speaker 6: of the time, or you're hearing her internal thoughts in
- 1:57:08Speaker 6: the anime. You're not actually seeing her talk as much.
- 1:57:11Speaker 6: And so they did edits where they just showed her
- 1:57:14Speaker 6: in the scene, her speaking lines, just, just her speaking lines,
- 1:57:18Speaker 6: no internal monologue.
- 1:57:20Speaker 3: And so she's like, why does everyone find me terrifying?
- 1:57:22Speaker 3: She barely speaks.
- 1:57:24Speaker 6: She only speaks, but she has something very poisonous to
- 1:57:28Speaker 6: explain to everyone.
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: She's like, oh yeah.
- 1:57:30Speaker 6: So obviously they died by, you know, you're like, oh,
- 1:57:36Speaker 6: that's what you were thinking?
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:57:37Speaker 3: Like, it's crazy.
- 1:57:39Speaker 6: So it's interesting that you're thinking as a writer, like
- 1:57:42Speaker 6: those thought bubbles that we see as we read, they're
- 1:57:44Speaker 6: not there.
- 1:57:45Speaker 3: Like you have to kind of like, you would have
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: to have.
- 1:57:47Speaker 6: Telepathy to get that internal feature of what's going on
- 1:57:50Speaker 6: in someone.
- 1:57:51Speaker 4: Well, Portia, to your point too, I think telepathy, not
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: to get cheesy, but like, would be such a, if
- 1:57:57Speaker 4: we all had it, it would be such a gateway
- 1:57:58Speaker 4: to better understanding each other, right? You know, it would
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: be the ultimate lease, the ultimate sort of like, empathy
- 1:58:05Speaker 4: hit where you're just like, yo, why this person fucking,
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: why this person's fucking with me but if you had
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: it you could understand what's going on with them you'd
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: be like oh that's why that person's fucking with.
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: Me yeah you know like he's had a terrible ass
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: day in a terrible life whatever you know he's stressed oh.
- 1:58:17Speaker 4: Man it's just like so i maybe maybe that's that's
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: a yearning for telepathy in the time like this where
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: we could better understand each other you know um So, yeah,
- 1:58:28Speaker 4: I don't know. That's me. There's some cooler ones out there,
- 1:58:30Speaker 4: but I think on a day-to-day basis, that would probably
- 1:58:33Speaker 4: be the one.
- 1:58:35Speaker 2: Look at Justin, doing it for humanity.
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: Hey, all day.
- 1:58:39Speaker 3: That's going to be his tagline going forward.
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: Doing it for humanity.
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: I'm a people person. I love y'all.
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: Tatiana's over here like, I choose powers of villainy. Yes! Yes!
- 1:58:58Speaker 4: Does that mean you're like, are you a Sith Lord
- 1:59:02Speaker 4: or are you a Jedi?
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: It's too cold so it's.
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: Seductive though the fashion they do put that shit on.
- 1:59:15Speaker 4: I'm not gonna lie dude I wasn't even fucking with
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: him until Darth Maul hit the scene I was like
- 1:59:20Speaker 4: I thought Darth Vader was a badass for sure like
- 1:59:22Speaker 4: I thought he was badass but it wasn't aspirational And
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: then I saw Darth Maul with those two lightsabers. And
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: I was like, oh, man.
- 1:59:29Speaker 3: Y'all got me fucked up.
- 1:59:33Speaker 2: These dudes still fucking with one lightsaber. This man over
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: here got it. They spinning, nigga. They spinning.
- 1:59:39Speaker 6: The Nightsisters have nice gear. The Nightsisters are always, I'm like,
- 1:59:42Speaker 6: what's going on with them?
- 1:59:44Speaker 3: Those are some interesting fits.
- 1:59:46Speaker 4: They're fashionable.
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: Darth Maul, the name and his brother. It's like savage
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: old press. Like, come on, bro. Like, what a name.
- 1:59:54Speaker 6: And then there's his mother.
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: It's stripped from the bloodline is what I'm saying.
- 1:59:59Speaker 5: Listen, and in more recent history, if you watch the Acolyte,
- 2:00:01Speaker 5: you'll know why I don't want to be a Jedi.
- 2:00:04Speaker 4: Oh, I mean, I get it. I get it. I see. Yeah.
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: All right. All right. Justin, you have survived for all nerds.
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: I mean, more to survive.
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: You have thrived. Thank you for joining us.
- 2:00:23Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: Absolutely incredible.
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: Please, you know, let the people know if you want to,
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: where they can find you at.
- 2:00:31Speaker 4: Find me at Justin Monty on Instagram. That's kind of it.
- 2:00:36Speaker 4: You know, I'm on I have a Twitter account. I apologize.
- 2:00:40Speaker 4: I don't really use it anymore. I X.
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: I'm a dad.
- 2:00:44Speaker 4: I'm a dad.
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: I mean, it's tough.
- 2:00:48Speaker 4: It's tough to keep. It's tough to keep up. But
- 2:00:50Speaker 4: I try my best on. I try to do my
- 2:00:52Speaker 4: best on Instagram. That's where you can find me.
- 2:00:54Speaker 3: Anything you could plug before you go?
- 2:00:57Speaker 4: Oh, you know, I did. I don't know if it's
- 2:01:01Speaker 4: credited or uncredited, but I did a rewrite on the
- 2:01:03Speaker 4: Thomas Crown affair that comes out next year.
- 2:01:05Speaker 3: Oh, nice.
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: Congratulations.
- 2:01:08Speaker 4: Check it. I saw, I've seen a cut. It's a
- 2:01:11Speaker 4: beautiful movie. Mike B did his thing. Yes. He is
- 2:01:17Speaker 4: everything that y'all think he is. He's out there killing it.
- 2:01:22Speaker 4: And that was a really fun movie to write on.
- 2:01:28Speaker 4: And I can't wait for people to see it. Because
- 2:01:31Speaker 4: speaking of the idea of seeing movies about You know,
- 2:01:34Speaker 4: whether it's something like a boomerang where it's like a
- 2:01:36Speaker 4: black owned company, like Thomas Crown owns his. He is.
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: OK.
- 2:01:40Speaker 4: You know, he is. But he also happens to be
- 2:01:44Speaker 4: a gentleman thief. It's I can't wait for people to
- 2:01:48Speaker 4: see it. So, yeah, I'm excited. I did a little
- 2:01:51Speaker 4: bit of work on that. That was that was a
- 2:01:53Speaker 4: lot of fun. And so, yeah, I'm excited for people
- 2:01:55Speaker 4: to see that. And yeah, yeah, yeah. Keep watching, y'all.
- 2:02:00Speaker 3: I'm excited. Respect to you, brother.
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 2:02:02Speaker 4: Thank you. Thank you.
- 2:02:03Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 2:02:05Speaker 4: Appreciate y'all. Thank you for having me. I really appreciate it.
- 2:02:07Speaker 4: I love what y'all and honest to goodness. I love
- 2:02:09Speaker 4: what y'all do for real. Like this is necessary. I mean, y'all, y'all,
- 2:02:13Speaker 4: y'all do a service, you know? So this is, it's
- 2:02:16Speaker 4: important because, uh, you know, it's a lot of kids
- 2:02:18Speaker 4: out there, especially growing up who just, they, they get
- 2:02:22Speaker 4: made fun of for the shit that they're into and
- 2:02:24Speaker 4: all this stuff. So for y'all to see them, you know,
- 2:02:27Speaker 4: to have these platforms, uh, have these forums. Like, it's...
- 2:02:30Speaker 4: Y'all doing God's work, so I appreciate y'all.
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: Thank you, man.
- 2:02:33Speaker 6: We can't do it without the work that y'all do,
- 2:02:35Speaker 6: so thank you for putting all that energy into the
- 2:02:38Speaker 6: work that you put out.
- 2:02:39Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:02:40Speaker 1: And I thank you so much because, like, you know,
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: I reached out to Damon when we saw that you'd
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: written the episode because we did the same with Vanessa.
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: You know, Damon has been a good friend and he
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: hooked us up and he was like, you know, both
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: of your parents are journalists, so he's like, it might
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: be tougher than it was to get Vanessa on the show.
- 2:02:56Speaker 2: So when.
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: you know, he turned around and was like.
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: Hey Ben, here's Justin, you know, hook it up. You know,
- 2:03:01Speaker 2: I was like, Oh shit.
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: You said yes.
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: So, you know, for you to, yeah, for you to
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: check this out and appreciate what we do, you know,
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: it means everything.
- 2:03:09Speaker 3: You cool people's man. You cool.
- 2:03:11Speaker 4: No, you know what I appreciate the most. And I mean,
- 2:03:14Speaker 4: I appreciate the hard questions. I love that y'all ask tough,
- 2:03:17Speaker 4: tough questions, you know, because a lot of times you get,
- 2:03:20Speaker 4: you watch podcasts and they bring on writers, creators, and
- 2:03:22Speaker 4: they don't, they just kind of like, you know, oh,
- 2:03:25Speaker 4: I love this and I love that and I love
- 2:03:27Speaker 4: this and I love that. And for y'all to actually
- 2:03:29Speaker 4: engage with the work and ask us tough questions, that's
- 2:03:32Speaker 4: the kind of discourse I'm here for. So I really
- 2:03:34Speaker 4: appreciate y'all doing that.
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: Oh, no, thank you because that is, Literally, I get
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: mad watching other interviews. I'll be like, why are you
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: wasting this person's time?
- 2:03:45Speaker 5: All I got to say is, Justin, if you can
- 2:03:48Speaker 5: impart that energy to your colleagues in the field.
- 2:03:52Speaker 2: Especially when we come out on the door. You know,
- 2:03:56Speaker 2: we got to shoot these shots.
- 2:03:57Speaker 4: We got to. Please. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll do what
- 2:04:01Speaker 4: I can. I'll do what I can. Just saying, you know.
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: Or anyone else you feel that we need to talk
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: to or would be great here, you know, we would
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: love to. Because like you say, Atlanta's just been phenomenal.
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: You know, I'm going to hit Damon again because I
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: keep being like, you know, he hasn't been on since Watchmen.
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: And he keeps trying to dodge me. But I'm like, brother,
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: you are coming back on this show.
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: Stop it.
- 2:04:22Speaker 4: I mean, let me, you know, Damon, you know, Damon,
- 2:04:26Speaker 4: when he goes into the cave to work, he's in
- 2:04:28Speaker 4: the cave.
- 2:04:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I get it.
- 2:04:30Speaker 4: I get it. I got it.
- 2:04:31Speaker 1: And I love him and appreciate him so much that
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: I'm like, yo, do, do you brother, you know, like,
- 2:04:36Speaker 1: cause I'm just such a, you know, like I'm so
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: appreciative of that man.
- 2:04:40Speaker 4: No, you should see him. It's crazy. And I mean
- 2:04:43Speaker 4: this y'all like when you're in the room, when I,
- 2:04:45Speaker 4: when I, when I started hanging out with him and
- 2:04:46Speaker 4: started building a story with him and his superpower, his
- 2:04:49Speaker 4: superpower is like const, his constructs are the pitches. Cause
- 2:04:53Speaker 4: you'll sit with the dude and he'll just be like,
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: what if it was this? And you're like, That only
- 2:04:58Speaker 4: took you, how did you come up with that in
- 2:04:59Speaker 4: 30 seconds? What's happening? You know, pitches that I've seen
- 2:05:03Speaker 4: other writers take, you know, you might spend a whole day,
- 2:05:06Speaker 4: this guy, it's just, and you're just like, bro, what's
- 2:05:09Speaker 4: going on? So I, but, but I think with that
- 2:05:13Speaker 4: comes this idea of like, he really just has to
- 2:05:15Speaker 4: lock in.
- 2:05:15Speaker 6: So.
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:05:17Speaker 4: But yeah, you should get Brie on the show. She's
- 2:05:19Speaker 4: a real, she's a fun hand.
- 2:05:20Speaker 3: We keep hearing about her.
- 2:05:22Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. She worked on Penguin, you know?
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: Oh, shit.
- 2:05:25Speaker 2: We got to, because I got to.
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: That made me love Batman. Like, I didn't like, you know,
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: the Matt Reeves Batman as much until I saw Penguin.
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: And then it was like, okay, you know, this is,
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: This universe really got something here.
- 2:05:37Speaker 4: Yeah, no, you got to holler. I'll link y'all. Hopefully
- 2:05:40Speaker 4: she'll do it. I'm putting her on the spot now.
- 2:05:42Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:05:43Speaker 2: Right? It's on air now. Yeah. Can't avoid it.
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: All right.
