It was breathtakingly close at Imola in both qualifying and in the race. Max Verstappen won from the pole for Red Bull-Honda but the McLaren-Mercedes drivers pushed him all the way, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri proving that the updated 2024 McLaren can also shine on a circuit very different from Miami. Ferrari were the third-best team, still lacking a little top speed, but the recent updates at Mercedes left Lewis Hamilton and George Russell fighting only for the minor places.
