Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22Happy Wednesday. Just one more day of Mini Scroll
- 0:27for the year. Today I have four stories for
- 0:29you guys and every single story is an update.
- 0:34So if you guys don't know the full context of like each of
- 0:38these stories, just scroll back. I'm always talking about them
- 0:41just like an episode or two before this.
- 0:43But it doesn't make sense for me to like reiterate every single
- 0:46story or like rehash every single story that I'm going to
- 0:49cover here because most of them I've covered just in the last
- 0:53couple of days. I never know how much context to
- 0:56give you guys, first of all, on like updates to stories, but
- 0:59also on who different creators are.
- 1:02I was thinking about that when I was prepping this and I was
- 1:05thinking like, well, people know who like Dave Portnoy is like
- 1:08probably, but there will be a subset of you guys that like
- 1:11might not know who he is. So if I'm just like, oh, and
- 1:13then Dave, people might be like, who the fuck is Dave?
- 1:16So if you guys have, I don't know, any recommendations or
- 1:19feedback or like preferences on that, let me know.
- 1:23I think the vast majority of our audience here like is very
- 1:27online. So you guys know who I'm talking
- 1:29about when I say someone's name. You typically know who that is,
- 1:32but I would be open to your feedback.
- 1:35OK, so the first story that I have for you guys is that
- 1:37Matilda Jerf has returned to social media following the
- 1:40workplace allegations with a new statement.
- 1:44So Matilda has made a new statement on her Instagram grid
- 1:47about the allegations that she fostered a toxic work
- 1:49environment and bullied previous staff.
- 1:52Again, this is one of those stories that I talked about for
- 1:54a very long time, 2 episodes ago.
- 1:56So go back and listen. Her statement is 4 tiles so I
- 2:00won't read all of it because that would be very long.
- 2:02But she says over the past few days I've been quiet on social
- 2:05media. My highest priority has been to
- 2:08meet with the JERF Ave. team and speak to them.
- 2:10I am fully aware that my words here are not an answer or a
- 2:13solution for me. It's important to write this
- 2:16directly to you. Then she goes on to say to
- 2:18anyone who I've hurt or let down.
- 2:20I want to start off by saying that I'm genuinely sorry.
- 2:23When I started Durf Avenue, I never expected that the company
- 2:26would be what it is today with so many team members and so much
- 2:30responsibility. I wasn't ready.
- 2:32I had never let A-Team prior to this.
- 2:34I had never built a company prior to this and under a lot of
- 2:37stress, high tempo, and nitivity.
- 2:40I'm sorry you guys. That's one of my words.
- 2:42If you guys have been listening to this podcast for a long, long
- 2:44time, like anonymity, I said it right there, but there's certain
- 2:48words like the Itchys, I just like struggle.
- 2:51Like I can read it, I can write it, but I cannot say it out
- 2:55loud. Naivety, naivety, naivety, you
- 2:57know what I mean? I failed to be the leader and
- 3:00colleague I wish to be along the way.
- 3:02And for that I am so, so sorry. Then she went on to explain very
- 3:05similar to what I said. The CEO already said that they
- 3:08were going to be doing like hiring external HR.
- 3:11I don't think they're like replacing management, but like
- 3:13hiring a more experienced management team, introducing
- 3:17monthly anonymous surveys to collect feedback.
- 3:20So she kind of just explained what the actions the company is
- 3:23going to take will be moving forward.
- 3:26OK, so her saying that she wasn't ready for this
- 3:31responsibility for this role. I mean, I agree with that.
- 3:35She was really young when this happened, when all of this like
- 3:37happened. I mean, she pursued it,
- 3:38obviously, but you know, she was really young when she started
- 3:41the company and it blew up really quickly.
- 3:43And I as somebody who runs a company that is literally like a
- 3:46fraction of the size of Derf Ave. like, and I'm also, I'm not
- 3:53ten years older than her, but I'm like maybe 767 years older
- 3:56than her. And I had corporate experience
- 3:58before this, you know, I don't know if Matilda has ever had
- 4:01corporate job before. I don't know if she just has
- 4:03always been an influencer. I don't really know her
- 4:05background. But you know, like I had some
- 4:07experience in like, you know, the workplace in the corporate
- 4:10world. But it is a whole different ball
- 4:12game to be like running your own company and managing people when
- 4:16you don't have somebody who's like teaching you how to manage
- 4:19people as well. And you might not have like the
- 4:20right mentorship. And yes, I, I was not ready.
- 4:24I believe she was not ready to, but just say that like you were
- 4:28not ready for this and therefore you bullied your employees is so
- 4:34delusional. I would hope that my team has
- 4:36never felt that just because I've like made tons of mistakes
- 4:40and have no idea what I'm doing half of the time that that
- 4:43doesn't translate into me, you know, fostering a toxic work
- 4:47environment for them and like putting them down and body
- 4:50shaming them and being so exclusive.
- 4:52But they can't use the same toilet as me and then getting
- 4:54them to like scrub the toilet if they use it like that behavior.
- 4:58I understand. She's saying she was like really
- 5:00overwhelmed and stressed and I believe all of that stuff.
- 5:03But the problem is like that's not how you take that out on
- 5:06people. I think the bigger problem here
- 5:08is what I said initially when I reported on this story is that
- 5:10obviously this is just like a case of I think we see this a
- 5:14lot. She's absolutely not, you know,
- 5:16unique in this where these kind of founders, whether they're
- 5:19influencers or not, they become influencers through being these
- 5:22founders. You know, like the, I think the
- 5:25ego just goes to your head. And when you think about like
- 5:28male entrepreneurs and the culture that we see from that,
- 5:31like whether it's in tech or like e-commerce, like whatever,
- 5:34the founder Bros are probably just as toxic, to be honest.
- 5:41And if you think about the egos that are going on there, it's
- 5:45not like an exclusively like Matilda thing.
- 5:48However, she is incredibly visible.
- 5:51She, like I said before, has built this platform.
- 5:54I said this a couple days ago. She built her platform off of
- 5:57being really sweet and touting these kind of inclusive values.
- 6:03And so she has farther to fall. I definitely don't think the
- 6:06story of, you know, a founder being egotistical and toxic to
- 6:12their staff and taking all of that out on their staff and
- 6:15making their staff feel like little and bullying them and
- 6:17whatever. Like, I don't think that's a
- 6:19unique story in like the entrepreneurship, like founder
- 6:23world at all. But I think her excuses for why
- 6:28she did what she did are just not acceptable.
- 6:31OK. And the next story that I have
- 6:33is that Grace O'Malley has quit Barstool following her falling
- 6:37out with Brianna Chicken Fries. So yesterday, Grace took to
- 6:41Instagram Stories revealing that she has left Barstool Sports
- 6:45after her podcast with her former BFF Brianna Chicken Fry
- 6:50is ending. And you know, they had a massive
- 6:52falling out. Again, I covered this on the
- 6:54podcast. So she wrote on Instagram
- 6:56stories. I wanted you guys to hear it
- 6:58from me first that this is my last day at Barstool.
- 7:01I'm so grateful for everyone at the company and today for taking
- 7:04a chance on me. I'm just as surprised as you
- 7:07are. There are no typos in this
- 7:09statement. So Dave made two response videos
- 7:12on TikTok. The first one, he confirmed that
- 7:15Grace quit and that she still has a year on her contract, but
- 7:18she decided to quit. He did not fire her.
- 7:20And then the second, he was like very heated and he was sharing
- 7:24all these private text messages between himself and Grace.
- 7:27I think he's tired of the narrative that the fans have
- 7:31created that he is like completely on Brianna's side and
- 7:35is like throwing Grace under the bus.
- 7:37And he was trying to prove that that's not the case, that
- 7:40throughout this whole process, like he has been supporting
- 7:43Grace and he wants her to succeed and he's let her kind of
- 7:46just like make her own decisions and do whatever she wants.
- 7:48Sorry, I should say Dave Portnoy, who is the owner of
- 7:50Barstool Sports. I don't know if I said that.
- 7:53So that's an example of the context.
- 7:55So yes, so he made this video and then he also was addressing
- 7:59because a lot of people have been saying that the reason why
- 8:01he took Brianna's side is because she looks so much like
- 8:05his ex-wife and she does like before some of the more recent
- 8:10work that she's had done, they do look very similar.
- 8:13So everyone's like maybe Dave has like a soft spot in his
- 8:16heart for Brianna because she looks like his ex-wife.
- 8:19Maybe he has like a crush on her.
- 8:20Like I don't know. I think it's just more so
- 8:23Brianna has worked for Dave for like 5 plus years.
- 8:26I think it's very clear that Dave plays favorites at
- 8:28Barstool. It's on a very, you know, above
- 8:31board HR friendly workplace. I think he just has like this
- 8:36long history and now friendship with Brianna.
- 8:39And so, you know, he hasn't known Grace or been working with
- 8:42Grace for nearly as long. I know he's really trying to say
- 8:45that he's not taking favorites or picking sides, but like he is
- 8:49obviously, I know he also gave they gave Grace the opportunity
- 8:53to speak her side of things on the podcast.
- 8:55However, I do think just from an optics perspective, he should
- 8:59not have allowed Brianna to talk with him on their joint podcast
- 9:06about another employee without her also being there to share
- 9:10her side of the story. I think that was like really
- 9:12unprofessional. Again, not that I think that
- 9:15Barstool Sports is like the beacon of professionalism, but,
- 9:18you know, I think that's where like people got that from.
- 9:22If Brianna had just told that stuff, like everything she was
- 9:25talking to Josh and Dave about, If she had just told that story
- 9:28either just to Josh or like, I don't know, on her own channel
- 9:31somewhere else, or she had somebody else talking to her on
- 9:33BFFS, not Dave, then I think that everything would not have
- 9:37blown up to the level that it did.
- 9:39But that's obviously why everybody thinks that Dave took
- 9:41Rihanna side. I'm also not surprised that
- 9:43Grace quit. I think her comedy career is
- 9:45about to take off and the Internet loves her.
- 9:48So I think it's the right time for her to go out on her own.
- 9:51OK, The next story that I have for you guys is that Tricia
- 9:54Paytas has finally confirmed she will not be publishing her
- 9:58interview episode with Jeffree Star on just Trish.
- 10:02So we have been waiting for like, I don't know, maybe six
- 10:05weeks. It's been a while since Tricia
- 10:08interviewed or like had Jeffrey on her podcast and the Internet
- 10:12exploded. Everybody was so shook to see
- 10:15the videos of them together because what we actually did a
- 10:17deep dive, a full deep dive a few weeks ago into the like
- 10:20messy friendship breakup between Tricia, Jeffrey and Shane and
- 10:24how like by sister and all of that, like played a role.
- 10:27So go listen to that if you guys need to know the lore.
- 10:30But basically, yes, they were going to, I guess, like hash it
- 10:34out or like show that they're on kind of better terms or
- 10:37something. In this podcast.
- 10:38It was right after Jeffrey did canceled and him doing canceled
- 10:41that was not well received by the audience.
- 10:44You know, like Tana and Brooks fans were like, what the hell?
- 10:47And I think people who are fans of Trish were even more shook
- 10:50because Jeffrey was a really bad friend to Trish.
- 10:53And people kind of felt like, come on, Trish, like you're
- 10:56trying to, she's having this like, quote UN quote
- 10:59Renaissance. And like, you know, I think she
- 11:01is trying to very much rehab her image.
- 11:03And in a lot of ways it's working.
- 11:06Despite how we might feel about that.
- 11:07It is working in a lot of ways. And, you know, having Jeffrey
- 11:12star somebody who is like, so deeply problematic, not that
- 11:15Trish is not, but like, so, so deeply, unapologetically
- 11:19problematic. I think that's the difference.
- 11:22Jeffrey doesn't give a flying fuck like how offensive he is.
- 11:26He does not care that he is like hurt so many people over the
- 11:30course of his career. I think people see Tricia's
- 11:34redemption as her trying to make right and having remorse.
- 11:39So anyways, that's like a whole other kettle of fish.
- 11:42But yes, so people were like, why would you have Jeffrey star
- 11:46on your podcast? Like this is just going to set
- 11:47you back. And yes, she basically spoke on
- 11:50her podcast now and just said after seeing the reception that
- 11:54everybody had, like the feedback that everybody was sending in
- 11:57about this and then talking to Jeffrey on the podcast about
- 11:59drama again. And she said she felt there were
- 12:01so many hurt feelings around drama get in and she didn't want
- 12:05to, like, bring up any old drama and, like, hurt anyone else in
- 12:08the process. She was like, I didn't even know
- 12:10these people. Like, I was not part of it.
- 12:11So I didn't really want to get involved.
- 12:13And yeah, I think it was mostly just she knew that she would
- 12:17kind of isolate, like a large portion of her audience who was
- 12:19saying, like, Trish, please, why did you do this?
- 12:22Please don't publish this. All right.
- 12:24And the last way that I have for you guys last update is that
- 12:27Hallie Kate has addressed the backlash about her clothing hall
- 12:31return. So I wanted to close the loop on
- 12:34this. This is like so minor and I know
- 12:36a lot of you guys already know this, but I was confused
- 12:39yesterday when I reported on the story.
- 12:40I thought maybe she was sent the clothes or I thought maybe it
- 12:43was like a paid partnership. No, she bought these clothes
- 12:47with her own money and then returned them.
- 12:51OK, like, welcome to shopping. So she was saying that she had
- 12:56to make this video. She was actually crying in half
- 12:58of it, which was really sad because she was saying, you
- 13:01know, like this. It's really hard to just, like,
- 13:03constantly see so much, like, feedback about yourself.
- 13:06And it does, like, get to me. I wish it didn't, but it does.
- 13:09And yeah, she was saying that when she was.
- 13:11So this was in 2022. So a few years ago, she was
- 13:14like, I was a different person than I am now.
- 13:17Like, I would just shop endlessly.
- 13:19I assume this is when she started making like, good, good
- 13:21money. She's like, I would go into
- 13:23stores. I would just buy anything that I
- 13:25wanted to, like, see, and I wouldn't try it on.
- 13:28And then I would just go home and like, she'd make content
- 13:30with it. She'd do hauls, She'd do try
- 13:32ONS, whatever. And then she would return
- 13:34whatever didn't fit her or she didn't like.
- 13:36So that makes this whole scenario even crazier to me.
- 13:41You guys know how I feel about it if you listen to yesterday's
- 13:43episode. But the fact the fact that the
- 13:47original creator was trying to say to her like it's not that
- 13:50deep girl when she's the one that's like taking photos of her
- 13:53in public and like posting them on the Internet to like end like
- 13:55a gotcha moment. I just can't.
- 13:57I was like, that makes it even crazier to me.
- 14:00The fact that Hallie bought these clothes with her own
- 14:02money. It was not a brand sponsorship.
- 14:04It was not sent to her. She was not selling PR like I
- 14:07can't crazy. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 14:11mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 14:14Please remember to rate review and subscribe.
- 14:16Please star rate US on Spotify. We're trying to get to 500 by
- 14:19the end of the year. I don't know if we're going to
- 14:21make it, but we're going to try. I love you guys and I will talk
- 14:26to you tomorrow for the last mini scroll for three weeks.
- 14:30But there will still be a deep dive.
- 14:32Like I said, it will be with Alex and Annabelle.
- 14:34So you guys will get to meet some of my team, which is
- 14:36exciting. OK, bye.
