Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Good morning everybody.
- 0:01Speaker 2: This is Gil and today I'm going to bring you
- 0:04Speaker 2: the third and final part of the Mail Gibson Joe
- 0:07Speaker 2: Rogan interview. To say that I enjoyed this interview would
- 0:13Speaker 2: be an understatement. Mel Gibson is just one of those dudes.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 0:20Speaker 2: He has a quirky way about him that you just
- 0:24Speaker 2: have to like. And I like the honesty. There's no
- 0:29Speaker 2: predisposed agenda. This is his honest take on just about anything.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So we're gonna review this well might I'll cut in
- 0:38Speaker 2: a little bit here and there, but this is the
- 0:39Speaker 2: third and final part of the Mail Gibson Joe Rogan Interview.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'll hope you enjoy it, and i'll give you my
- 0:44Speaker 2: thoughts on it when it's completed later.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Without you having to know what to do. It was
- 0:52Speaker 3: a weird thing. He did it firstly with my son,
- 0:56Speaker 3: who he got him for a couple of weeks and
- 0:58Speaker 3: like he said, I'm about to show you something and
- 1:00Speaker 3: I went out there and he blindfolded me. He had
- 1:02Speaker 3: these two swords and he was doing all this, you know,
- 1:05Speaker 3: this crazy stuff. I'm like, what I said, how did he?
- 1:08Speaker 3: How did he learn that so fast? He said it
- 1:10Speaker 3: was in him, and I'm like, whoa, And then he
- 1:14Speaker 3: started to he started to do a thing that he
- 1:15Speaker 3: taught me how to harness this energy and to actually
- 1:20Speaker 3: begin what seemed to be almost like involuntary movement, and
- 1:26Speaker 3: depending on the hand mode you took, it would create
- 1:29Speaker 3: a style of kata or self defense. I used to
- 1:34Speaker 3: do like some I used to do a crude martial art,
- 1:36Speaker 3: not crude, but like a hard martial art. It was
- 1:40Speaker 3: cho kushenkai way back karate. Yeah, yeah, I think it's Korean.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It's Japanese it is, Yeah, I.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Can't remember, but it's like, you know, I didn't stick
- 1:50Speaker 3: with it, but it was. But but he he, he
- 1:55Speaker 3: got this whole other approach of breathing and visualizations that
- 1:59Speaker 3: would actually draw energy into your lower chakras and then you,
- 2:05Speaker 3: you know, you'd release the energy and it would create
- 2:08Speaker 3: this kind of movement. And I showed it to a
- 2:10Speaker 3: friend of mine who was a martial artist, and I said,
- 2:13Speaker 3: tell me about the footwork I'm doing here and what
- 2:15Speaker 3: I'm doing, and he looked at me, he says, that
- 2:17Speaker 3: looks really good to me. I said, it was kind
- 2:19Speaker 3: of like, what's that really soft kind of march? It
- 2:23Speaker 3: was like that I was doing stuff like that. It
- 2:25Speaker 3: was crazy and it was really a great release. But
- 2:28Speaker 3: it was about visualization and breath. Yeah, and the release
- 2:34Speaker 3: of those that energy that you pent up from all
- 2:38Speaker 3: around that you visualized coming manifesting itself in you.
- 2:43Speaker 4: There's got to be something to all that stuff. People
- 2:45Speaker 4: have been practicing tai chi for a long time. They
- 2:48Speaker 4: wouldn't be practicing to save movements for all these years
- 2:51Speaker 4: if it didn't do something.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty interesting. Yeah, it keeps people young and healthy.
- 2:56Speaker 3: They do it, and you see groups of people out
- 2:58Speaker 3: in Asia sort of out there in groups do it
- 3:01Speaker 3: all in unison. It's like it's a good thing. Exercise.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Yeah, what do you do now for exercise?
- 3:08Speaker 3: Oh gosh, I'm terrible. I've been I've come off, I'm
- 3:11Speaker 3: falling apart. I got this, I got dead dead guy's
- 3:15Speaker 3: parts of my shoulder. I've got, you know, cadaver parts.
- 3:17Speaker 3: And this shoulder fell apart. This shoulder fell, a hip,
- 3:20Speaker 3: a foot. Was terrible. I couldn't walk for about a
- 3:24Speaker 3: year almost really, and so you know, you fall down.
- 3:28Speaker 3: That's partially why I had to go and see Breck
- 3:30Speaker 3: at a sort of get the couch potato stuff off
- 3:34Speaker 3: but you know, I lift weights and I do some
- 3:37Speaker 3: you know, walking and stuff like that, like really get
- 3:41Speaker 3: your heart right up and stuff like that. So you know,
- 3:45Speaker 3: I'm trying. Hey, I'm you know, I'm sixty nine years old,
- 3:48Speaker 3: so it's like it's getting to be like seven decades
- 3:52Speaker 3: or you know. Yeah, but I want to stay fit
- 3:56Speaker 3: if I can.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So at this point, I didn't know that he had
- 4:01Speaker 2: any type of martial arts training. But I'm fifty five,
- 4:04Speaker 2: he's sixty nine. I fought professionally. I've had forty fifty
- 4:09Speaker 2: pro fights and boxing, MMA, tie boxing, kickboxing, and a
- 4:13Speaker 2: lot of people don't know that. But I don't make
- 4:15Speaker 2: that known because I don't find it a point of
- 4:19Speaker 2: conversation often. But I know what he means when he
- 4:23Speaker 2: says his body's breaking down. It just so happens that
- 4:26Speaker 2: my body's breaking down. But I'm still training and I'm
- 4:30Speaker 2: still participating hard sparring, I do jiu jitsu. But I
- 4:36Speaker 2: understand exactly where he's coming from. And more and the man,
- 4:39Speaker 2: the more and more I hear Mel Gibson, the more
- 4:42Speaker 2: I like about Mel Gibson. There's just something about him
- 4:45Speaker 2: that I just absolutely like.
- 4:47Speaker 3: So let's keep going I'm just you know, it's just
- 4:50Speaker 3: trying to push the old man off, and he's various
- 4:53Speaker 3: methods to do it, you know.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what it is. Keep the body as young
- 4:57Speaker 4: as he possibly can. Yeah, yeah, and demand a lot
- 5:00Speaker 4: from it. That's what I do. I just demand a
- 5:05Speaker 4: lot and make sure I recover.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I think a lot of it's about meditation too. You know,
- 5:11Speaker 3: you can actually get into a good headspace that kind
- 5:15Speaker 3: of cools you out and stops the stress even no
- 5:17Speaker 3: matter what's going on. I'm gonna have to do it
- 5:20Speaker 3: tonight when I find out whether I still have a
- 5:22Speaker 3: home or not.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, if anything looks demonic, it's the fires in
- 5:26Speaker 4: Los Angeles. I remember one time we were filming Fear
- 5:30Speaker 4: Factor and we had to drive home. We had to
- 5:32Speaker 4: cancel a shoot or ended early and drive home because
- 5:35Speaker 4: the fires had hit. And this is like up. We
- 5:38Speaker 4: were off the five and driving home for fifty minutes
- 5:42Speaker 4: on the highway. The right side of the highway was
- 5:45Speaker 4: in flames, like Lord of the Rings, like saurn Is
- 5:49Speaker 4: coming over the top. It looked fucking insane. Looks it's biblical.
- 5:53Speaker 4: It looks insane.
- 5:54Speaker 3: And you got to be careful too, because You could
- 5:56Speaker 3: die if you can't breathe, or if the car in
- 6:00Speaker 3: front of you catch fire and the wind blows this
- 6:02Speaker 3: way and all the cars catch fire and you can't
- 6:04Speaker 3: get off the road because to the right of you's
- 6:06Speaker 3: on fire, to the left us on fire, and the
- 6:08Speaker 3: fire's coming up the highway.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, people have died that way, and.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It can happen to any YEP. I got hung once
- 6:15Speaker 3: by mistake, and it was I was on a film
- 6:20Speaker 3: set and I was had my neck and a noose
- 6:23Speaker 3: and I was directing the film, so I was I'm
- 6:25Speaker 3: on a ladder and I'm like, so, I'll just be
- 6:29Speaker 3: hanging here like this man. And then the next thing
- 6:31Speaker 3: I knew, I was waking up. I was on the floor,
- 6:33Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So that's what I'm talking about, how quirky meil Gibson is.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He goes from talking about the biblical look of the
- 6:44Speaker 2: fires too, and Joe rogues explaining what happened to him
- 6:48Speaker 2: on his way home, and Meil Gibson just automatically just
- 6:50Speaker 2: switches gears and goes, I got hung up.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I got hung on a movie set once.
- 6:56Speaker 2: And it's just that quirkiness in this guy that just
- 7:00Speaker 2: absolutely makes me like, like love it.
- 7:05Speaker 1: He's just there's something about him. Man.
- 7:07Speaker 3: We did I was fortunate enough to work with with
- 7:12Speaker 3: Horry on Gracie thirty nine years ago. Yeah, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 3: he'd just come from Brazil. Well, I remember when you
- 7:18Speaker 3: were doing Lethal Weapon. It was the first time I'd
- 7:20Speaker 3: ever seen jiu jitsu in a movie, a leg choke
- 7:22Speaker 3: on film. Yeah, he taught Yeah, Horriyan taught me. The
- 7:24Speaker 3: leg jokes to you grab your foot and you okay,
- 7:28Speaker 3: and it was it was cool, but it was. Now
- 7:32Speaker 3: my girlfriend does it, and she's like a purple belt,
- 7:34Speaker 3: so I've really yeah, I've learned.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Not to talk about she's legit.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, she's legit purple belts.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Purple belt is basically a black belt. You just need
- 7:41Speaker 4: a little bit more time.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yep.
- 7:43Speaker 4: If you can get I always tell all jiu jitsu students,
- 7:45Speaker 4: if you can get the purple belt, you are a
- 7:47Speaker 4: black belt. You're going to be a black belt.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Oh she will.
- 7:48Speaker 4: You just got to stay on that path.
- 7:50Speaker 3: No, she is, she's obsessed with it and she's you know,
- 7:53Speaker 3: as I say, I don't talk back to her.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I think the purple belt is the hardest belt to
- 7:57Speaker 4: get to. It is because it's just like in the beginning,
- 8:00Speaker 4: you're just getting crushed. That's jiu jitsu, especially for women.
- 8:03Speaker 4: It's so difficult for women because they don't have the
- 8:05Speaker 4: physical strength that the men have. Because you can kind
- 8:08Speaker 4: of get away with a lot if you're a big,
- 8:09Speaker 4: strong guy, you can get away with a lot of shit.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But then by the time you get the purple belt,
- 8:13Speaker 4: like man, you have to have real technique and you
- 8:16Speaker 4: have to have a real understanding of what's going on.
- 8:19Speaker 3: She got a good mind, and I think she's like
- 8:22Speaker 3: like a chess player. M It is like that because
- 8:25Speaker 3: I know from fighting with her she wins arguments when
- 8:30Speaker 3: she's wrong.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Sometimes you let them win though, right you have to
- 8:36Speaker 4: just like you gotta walk away.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Oh yeah, sometimes you gotta go Okay, it's my second
- 8:40Speaker 3: thought on my first action.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yeah, but she got the
- 8:46Speaker 4: purple belt. That's amazing.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Good for her, it's good for her.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, a woman black belt. That's an unbelievably exceptional woman.
- 8:55Speaker 4: They can get to that because they have to roll
- 8:56Speaker 4: with men, and it's just well, she needs to get
- 8:58Speaker 4: a disadvantage dudes, and.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And she's like, you know, she she's done some exceptional
- 9:04Speaker 3: things I've heard, so it's like, yeah, it's pretty.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Good, that's awesome.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I didn't follow it up. You can
- 9:13Speaker 3: still do it now. I'm a more baseball bat gun
- 9:15Speaker 3: kind of guy. I'm in trouble edge just like you
- 9:18Speaker 3: know that kind of stuff.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Well, be careful with that. In California. You can't wind
- 9:22Speaker 4: up being in jail.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true.
- 9:23Speaker 4: You wind up using it to protect yourself and they'll
- 9:26Speaker 4: lock you up.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yes, it's which is also evil. Yeah, that happens a bit.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yeah m hm, oh well it's yeah, there's a perverse
- 9:36Speaker 3: nature in our society right now with the law.
- 9:39Speaker 4: And when you look at your life now and you're
- 9:41Speaker 4: on your third act, as you're saying, like, what what
- 9:44Speaker 4: do you look forward to these days? Is it creating things?
- 9:48Speaker 4: It's creation?
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I think it is. It's about creation. And
- 9:53Speaker 3: I figure I'm not I'm pretty average at most things,
- 9:59Speaker 3: but I'm good at a couple of things. You know.
- 10:03Speaker 3: I know how to tell a story on film. I
- 10:05Speaker 3: know how to do that.
- 10:06Speaker 4: I don't know what.
- 10:07Speaker 3: That's a weird place to be, but I think a
- 10:12Speaker 3: lot can be achieved by art an image, and you
- 10:17Speaker 3: can convey a lot without actually having to say it.
- 10:21Speaker 3: You can do things to affect people emotionally or spiritually,
- 10:27Speaker 3: even without being overt. I always like to reference just
- 10:35Speaker 3: a shot that and it's in a Ridley Scott movie, right,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and you don't know why it works but or why
- 10:44Speaker 3: it's effective on some level, but it's kind of a
- 10:47Speaker 3: profound effective shot. And it's that first shot in the
- 10:51Speaker 3: Gladiator movie where he's running his hand over the wheat,
- 10:54Speaker 3: right with that music and stuff. Why does that work?
- 10:59Speaker 3: I don't know, you can't explain it, but it works well.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Really, Scott is a master. Yeah, that's a that's a
- 11:07Speaker 4: visionary human being. He sees things, he knows how to shoot. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 4: and that is that's really good.
- 11:15Speaker 3: It's a valid pursuit I think in storytelling. If you
- 11:19Speaker 3: can do that everything every time he goes out there,
- 11:22Speaker 3: it's a it's eye candy. It's a feast for the eyes,
- 11:25Speaker 3: you know.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Do you have different goals with like different projects, Like
- 11:28Speaker 4: obviously flight Risk is entertainment. It's fun.
- 11:31Speaker 3: It's entertainment. Yeah, and yes, different goals And it was
- 11:36Speaker 3: the other thing too, is it's like we're living in
- 11:38Speaker 3: a different time now in the film world. I mean,
- 11:40Speaker 3: everything's upside down and you have to compete in a
- 11:45Speaker 3: medium where you have less time, less money, do it fast,
- 11:50Speaker 3: do it now, And it's like, wow, can I do that?
- 11:52Speaker 3: I always had the luxury of, like, you know, a
- 11:54Speaker 3: big budget and three thousand people on horses and all
- 11:57Speaker 3: this kind of stuff or you know, and was able
- 12:00Speaker 3: to take my time with stuff. But I had twenty
- 12:03Speaker 3: two days, and here you got to tell the story
- 12:08Speaker 3: in twenty two days. So I felt the challenge of
- 12:11Speaker 3: being able to do that and being able to make
- 12:14Speaker 3: something that really got people that they could watch it
- 12:18Speaker 3: and enjoy it, you know. And I'm glad you saw it.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I'm glad you liked it. And that's all I want.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I just want people to have a nice little ride
- 12:26Speaker 3: of fun ride entertainment. But yes, you have different goals
- 12:29Speaker 3: with things. I mean, the next thing I'm going to
- 12:31Speaker 3: tackle is more profound for me. It's going to take
- 12:34Speaker 3: more out of me.
- 12:36Speaker 4: This is the Resurrection story.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and I even have to change my entire life
- 12:41Speaker 3: to do it. How so, you can't go into a
- 12:47Speaker 3: project as profound in nature as that without somehow preparing
- 12:55Speaker 3: yourself for it. It's like it's like preparing for a fight.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It's like you have to be fit for the fight.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And yes, so you have to spiritually prepare yourself for that.
- 13:05Speaker 3: And and that's that's going to take some sacrifice. And
- 13:10Speaker 3: because you know, well, you know, I profess this, and
- 13:14Speaker 3: I profess that I'm not a great example of Christianity.
- 13:17Speaker 3: You know, I'm just you know, I'm flawed and I
- 13:20Speaker 3: make a lot of mistakes. But I have to try
- 13:23Speaker 3: and be better somehow in order to go in and
- 13:26Speaker 3: make that film. So what does that mean? I think
- 13:30Speaker 3: I know what it means. You know.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Well, one of the things that I thought was fascinating
- 13:34Speaker 4: was reading and listening to Jim Caviezel talk about his
- 13:37Speaker 4: experience playing Christ in your film.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Yeah, just truly.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Change that guy's the course of his whole life.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Well, it was fascinating to watch him work, actually, and
- 13:48Speaker 3: most of the time I just like backed away because
- 13:52Speaker 3: he was doing something that And I've seen a lot
- 13:55Speaker 3: of people portray Jesus in films, right, and I never
- 14:00Speaker 3: buy it. You can't quite buy it. Something creeps in
- 14:05Speaker 3: the color, that's not something, something's not right or discordant.
- 14:11Speaker 3: And some of them are pretty good, but you never
- 14:14Speaker 3: quite believe it all the way.
- 14:15Speaker 4: What was the Woolen defa movie?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Oh? That was a Scorsese film, right? What was that
- 14:21Speaker 3: called The Last Temptation? That's right, that's right, which, interestingly enough,
- 14:26Speaker 3: I was in a hotel in the Savoy and I
- 14:29Speaker 3: had food poisoning. I was near dead from I ate
- 14:32Speaker 3: a bad oyster in London and I was dying in
- 14:35Speaker 3: a hotel room and I couldn't even leave. It was
- 14:39Speaker 3: the worst. I think it was like salmonella or something.
- 14:42Speaker 3: And I saw this cord on the side of the
- 14:44Speaker 3: bed and I pulled it and all of a sudden
- 14:47Speaker 3: a door opened up in a butler like Jeeves came in.
- 14:50Speaker 3: He says, yes, sir, and I'm like, whoa. I said,
- 14:53Speaker 3: I'm really sick. I said, what do you think I
- 14:56Speaker 3: should eat? Might I suggests some warm cums me in
- 14:59Speaker 3: a cup of He said, okay. So this butler took
- 15:03Speaker 3: care of me in this hotel. But while I was there,
- 15:05Speaker 3: says he calls the room and she says, came here,
- 15:07Speaker 3: I want to talk here. So I go in and
- 15:09Speaker 3: talk to Martin and he's in his room and all
- 15:12Speaker 3: the windows, the screens are drawn. He's got eighteen different
- 15:14Speaker 3: TVs going on at the same time in this dark room,
- 15:17Speaker 3: and he's talking to me about the Last Temptation of
- 15:19Speaker 3: Christ and he wants me to play Jesus and I said, whoa,
- 15:22Speaker 3: I'm not doing it. And I sort of got out
- 15:31Speaker 3: of there, and then I went back to my room
- 15:32Speaker 3: and they changed my room. Now this is really weird.
- 15:35Speaker 3: They had changed my room and moved my stuff, and
- 15:38Speaker 3: they told me they were going to do it, but
- 15:40Speaker 3: I forgot. So I'm using a key to get into
- 15:43Speaker 3: my room and it won't work, and the door opens
- 15:45Speaker 3: up all of a sudden, and it's Keith Richards in
- 15:47Speaker 3: this underpants standing there staring through me like, and there's
- 15:51Speaker 3: a girl in a mink coat walking around a mink
- 15:53Speaker 3: coat and nothing else walking in the background, and Keith
- 15:57Speaker 3: Richard's standing there in his underpants with a spliff, and
- 16:00Speaker 3: I'm like, I tried to explain that I thought it
- 16:04Speaker 3: was my room, but it wasn't you know. It was ridiculous.
- 16:06Speaker 3: I'm twenty six years old. And he just looks at
- 16:08Speaker 3: me like he shuts the door in my face. I said, well,
- 16:13Speaker 3: that was my that was my meeting with Keith Richards.
- 16:15Speaker 3: He slammed the door in my face. So I was like,
- 16:18Speaker 3: it's fantastic, you know anyway, But what he's he did
- 16:24Speaker 3: something I think that nobody else did. And I think
- 16:27Speaker 3: he pulled it off because I totally like believed it.
- 16:30Speaker 4: I believed it too.
- 16:31Speaker 3: And it was like, what did he do? He emptied
- 16:35Speaker 3: himself out, Yeah, and he invited something else in and
- 16:41Speaker 3: he left it. He just he didn't try anything. He
- 16:44Speaker 3: just he emptied himself out and he meditated and he
- 16:48Speaker 3: let christ in.
- 16:50Speaker 4: That role seemed to have had a profound effect on him.
- 16:53Speaker 3: It did as a human being, oh absolutely, and.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Kind of fucked him up in his career a little
- 16:59Speaker 4: bit because people associated him entirely with that film, and
- 17:04Speaker 4: then they associated him with Christianity, and then they associated
- 17:07Speaker 4: him with right wing politics.
- 17:09Speaker 3: And yeah, yeah, and then you know, he got sidetracked
- 17:13Speaker 3: by a few guys. I mean there's some people out there,
- 17:16Speaker 3: like they're get in your ear and it's like Cassius,
- 17:19Speaker 3: you know, talking about right and they get you to
- 17:22Speaker 3: just make a speech somewhere and then you know it's
- 17:24Speaker 3: like you know, people throwing eggs act Yeah, and you wonder,
- 17:28Speaker 3: you know, should I even be saying this? And so
- 17:32Speaker 3: he stepped on a bunch of land mines. But yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 3: it did have a profound effect on him. But I
- 17:38Speaker 3: think he was he was already mostly there anyway, And
- 17:42Speaker 3: I noticed that because I when I was trying to
- 17:44Speaker 3: cast that, I thought, who could play this? And I
- 17:46Speaker 3: saw the opening shot from Terry Mallick's film, which is
- 17:49Speaker 3: The Thin Red Line, and it was just a big
- 17:55Speaker 3: close up of the feasil and there was something otherworldly
- 17:59Speaker 3: and childlike going on there in the close up, and
- 18:02Speaker 3: I thought, who's that guy? He's amazing. Of course, he
- 18:05Speaker 3: couldn't keep the blue eyes. He had to he had
- 18:07Speaker 3: to trade him out, so I changed the color of
- 18:09Speaker 3: his eyes to brown and and all that stuff, so
- 18:12Speaker 3: it looked like he came from the region, right, But
- 18:17Speaker 3: amazing what he already had a quality and ethereal kind
- 18:22Speaker 3: of otherworldingness, space cadet quality. Yeah, and he's still kind
- 18:27Speaker 3: of liked that.
- 18:28Speaker 4: He's still like, wow, Yeah, he's won. I wish I
- 18:32Speaker 4: had met him, or I haven't met him still, but
- 18:35Speaker 4: I wish i'd seen him before. And then after you
- 18:39Speaker 4: had to see, like what did that role change him?
- 18:42Speaker 4: Because it seemed to have strengthened his faith.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Sure, it did. Yeah, yeah, he got He got in
- 18:47Speaker 3: real type with it, and I think he had some
- 18:49Speaker 3: experiences while he was doing it. He suffered a little,
- 18:54Speaker 3: you know.
- 18:54Speaker 4: And then he had struck by lightning.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Well there's two times there was these lightning strikes happening
- 18:59Speaker 3: on that, you know, And there was this guy with him.
- 19:04Speaker 3: He was a young fella, one of the assistants on
- 19:06Speaker 3: the film. His name was Yan and old Jan was like,
- 19:11Speaker 3: he's like six foot two Italian, Northern Italian guy. You know,
- 19:15Speaker 3: if he tripped in the street, women would slide under him,
- 19:18Speaker 3: you know. It was that kind of stuff. The guy
- 19:20Speaker 3: was like a babe magnet, right, and I think he
- 19:24Speaker 3: was taking full advantage of the gifts he had. But
- 19:28Speaker 3: he got hit by lightning. The first time getting people.
- 19:31Speaker 3: We were out on the hill and there was a
- 19:32Speaker 3: lightning storm like with the crosses and stuff.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Oh Jesus.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And this guy called Chieppo. He was a grip and
- 19:40Speaker 3: he never spoke a word to me the whole time.
- 19:42Speaker 3: He's just a quiet kind of guy. And I figured, oh,
- 19:45Speaker 3: he doesn't know English, you know. But he came up
- 19:48Speaker 3: to me and in perfect English, he said, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 3: I think you should get all the people off the hill,
- 19:53Speaker 3: we could be struck by lightning. And I thought, oh,
- 19:55Speaker 3: that's a good idea. Let's get off the hill. So
- 19:57Speaker 3: we're moving off the hill, everybody's getting off, and this
- 20:01Speaker 3: kid gets hit through the umbrella. This Yon guy, he
- 20:04Speaker 3: gets zapped by lightning. Right, but he's twenty two, and
- 20:07Speaker 3: he goes to the disco all night and Dad, ut,
- 20:11Speaker 3: you know, he's doing the whole you know, twenty two experience.
- 20:15Speaker 3: And he comes back next day he's like, yeah, it
- 20:17Speaker 3: was great. And then he was with Jim the second
- 20:20Speaker 3: time it happened. But this time I found him in
- 20:23Speaker 3: a Fiat bambino with his knees up around his ears,
- 20:26Speaker 3: like waiting for the third strike. He was like this,
- 20:29Speaker 3: this just doesn't happen twice in the third strike and
- 20:32Speaker 3: he says, I have to change my life.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So it was prediling. That movie must have had a
- 20:39Speaker 4: profound effect on a lot of people, right, yeah, because
- 20:42Speaker 4: you were doing something that wasn't just a film. It
- 20:46Speaker 4: was yeah, verite kind of yeah, and it was strengthening
- 20:51Speaker 4: people's faith. That film was a I mean profound success,
- 20:55Speaker 4: and a lot of people dismissed the idea of it,
- 20:57Speaker 4: even you know, especially in Hollywood. I mean you had
- 21:00Speaker 4: a self.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Fund all that, right, Yes, it was self funded. And
- 21:04Speaker 3: it was a very strange experience, that one because I
- 21:07Speaker 3: put the money and I thought, well, maybe I'll break even.
- 21:10Speaker 3: And it was then I got these messages back all
- 21:13Speaker 3: the majors wouldn't distribute it. So I was thinking, nobody
- 21:17Speaker 3: will distribute it. Okay, I guess I've I've lost you know,
- 21:21Speaker 3: the money, but it was worth the experience. And so
- 21:26Speaker 3: one guy was left in the room at the end
- 21:28Speaker 3: when the when the dust settled. It was some guy
- 21:30Speaker 3: he I'll distribute. And he had a little company called
- 21:33Speaker 3: New Market and they distributed like one or two films before,
- 21:37Speaker 3: and I think it was a Charlie's Thoron movie called
- 21:41Speaker 3: a Monster about that horrible serial.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, And.
- 21:45Speaker 3: He said I'll do it, and you know, it was
- 21:48Speaker 3: just really basics. I went and I met the exhibitors
- 21:53Speaker 3: and you know, and this guy was like the distributor.
- 21:56Speaker 3: This little company was just him and a toothless dog
- 21:59Speaker 3: and a fax and an assistant and it was like, okay,
- 22:02Speaker 3: what's all the smoke and mirrors about this? With between
- 22:05Speaker 3: the distribution and exhibition I met, I made handshake deals
- 22:08Speaker 3: with all the exhibitors. Yeah, we'll show this, I said, okay,
- 22:13Speaker 3: and then we put it out there and it went out.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Nobody expected it to do much, but it did phenomenally well.
- 22:20Speaker 3: And and there was this kind of thing in town.
- 22:26Speaker 3: In the town, they said, did anyone just see that?
- 22:29Speaker 3: Then we'll just see what that guy did. Can't let
- 22:32Speaker 3: that guy do that again? And yeah, we don't want
- 22:35Speaker 3: anyone doing that, you know, because it sort of walked
- 22:38Speaker 3: around the entire system yes and scored.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Right. So there was two things. There was resistance to
- 22:45Speaker 4: the Christianity aspect of it and promotion of Christianity, and
- 22:49Speaker 4: then there was resistance to the fact that you went
- 22:51Speaker 4: outside the system.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Well, I had no alternative, right, because no major would.
- 22:56Speaker 4: Back it because of the Christianity aspect of it.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I guess yeah. Well, Rubert Murdoch said, you know, he
- 23:00Speaker 3: wanted to and then he said yeah, and then somebody
- 23:04Speaker 3: advised him and said he'd be out of business in
- 23:06Speaker 3: five years. Rubert Murdoch, Wow, in five years if he
- 23:09Speaker 3: distributed that, if he yeah, And I was like, wow,
- 23:12Speaker 3: if he's scared, what I'm like, I'm gotta I'm gonna
- 23:15Speaker 3: crash and burn here. But it actually did.
- 23:17Speaker 4: All right, it did phenomenal.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, And then again I tried to uh and I went,
- 23:23Speaker 3: I went with a studio on Apocalypto, but and that
- 23:26Speaker 3: didn't work out so.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Well, it didn't Well.
- 23:29Speaker 3: It was interesting. The film was a film with it
- 23:34Speaker 3: had no stars, it was in another language, and it
- 23:39Speaker 3: came out on a weekend with another film that had
- 23:43Speaker 3: Leo Leo in it, and another film that had Cameron
- 23:46Speaker 3: Diaz in it. And so those three films came out
- 23:51Speaker 3: on the same weekend, and the one with no stars
- 23:53Speaker 3: and without the language won the weekend monetarily, it won
- 23:57Speaker 3: the box office by a narrow mark margin on the
- 24:01Speaker 3: other two. And the second week out, Disney pulled the
- 24:06Speaker 3: screens real yeah, so I thought, oh, that's funny, Well,
- 24:12Speaker 3: screens are gone. I guess there's another agenda because that
- 24:18Speaker 3: was another self funded one.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Did they pull the screens because they had movies that
- 24:21Speaker 4: they had already made deals with?
- 24:23Speaker 3: I think so, But you know, it's just it's just politics,
- 24:26Speaker 3: and you know, and I think perhaps the distribution deal
- 24:31Speaker 3: on that wasn't as good as right something else or
- 24:34Speaker 3: you know, so it's you know, it's all business.
- 24:36Speaker 4: It's a phenomenal movie though.
- 24:38Speaker 3: It's a great film. Yeah, and it did better afterwards.
- 24:41Speaker 4: In DVD and streaming and all that.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I did well.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 4: I watched it again like two years ago. Yeah, I
- 24:48Speaker 4: hadn't seen it in a while, and I watched it again,
- 24:50Speaker 4: and I forgot a bunch of aspects of were like, god, damn,
- 24:52Speaker 4: it's a good movie.
- 24:53Speaker 3: It's just primal, yes, And I think I love primitive stuff,
- 24:57Speaker 3: you know, and primal emotions. I mean, basically, it's a
- 25:02Speaker 3: guy just trying to get back home to save his
- 25:04Speaker 3: wife and kid, and he's got a lot of obstacles
- 25:07Speaker 3: in the way, like jaguars and bad guys chasing him
- 25:10Speaker 3: and trying to skin him and trying to rip his heart. Yeah,
- 25:14Speaker 3: it's pretty cool.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 25:16Speaker 3: And I sat in a room with my assistant. He said,
- 25:18Speaker 3: what do you want to do next to Chase movie?
- 25:20Speaker 3: I said, He said, well, so we found out where
- 25:23Speaker 3: the Mayan canoes and Columbus and all that, and then
- 25:25Speaker 3: we just started making the story up in the room
- 25:28Speaker 3: and we wrote it. Wow. Yeah, some assistant man. He
- 25:33Speaker 3: actually wrote he actually tapped it out.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Hmmm.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 25:38Speaker 4: So when you're making this Resurrection movie. Now you also
- 25:43Speaker 4: have this obligation. There's this you're doing a very similar
- 25:48Speaker 4: thing that you were doing with the Passion of the Christ,
- 25:51Speaker 4: where this is this is a profound story. Yes, when
- 25:55Speaker 4: you put something like that together, how do you choose
- 25:57Speaker 4: who's going to be the next Jesus? You use him again, CAVISO. Yeah,
- 26:02Speaker 4: I know it's twenty years later. It's twenty years later,
- 26:05Speaker 4: but yeah, but it's the right guy.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's it's supposed to be three days later,
- 26:10Speaker 3: but he got twenty years older. And I think I
- 26:15Speaker 3: have to use a few techniques that they've started to
- 26:18Speaker 3: get really good with the CGI.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, I'm gonna pause it right there for one second.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Listen.
- 26:24Speaker 2: If he does the movie about the Resurrection, which is
- 26:28Speaker 2: hopefully he gets to that point that he does it,
- 26:32Speaker 2: I will watch it, no doubt whatsoever.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Here's my only issue. Passion of the Christ. We watched
- 26:39Speaker 1: it in.
- 26:40Speaker 2: The theater and it was disturbing. I've never watched it again.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I've seen it one time. I've never seen it again.
- 26:51Speaker 2: It was that disturbing to me. It hurt my heart.
- 26:55Speaker 2: It made me feel something that was just an immaculate
- 27:00Speaker 2: made movie and to be honest with you, I think
- 27:03Speaker 2: I want to watch it again.
- 27:05Speaker 1: So today is a good day.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I think tonight, when I'm laying in bed, I might
- 27:09Speaker 2: put it on and watch it.
- 27:11Speaker 1: But that is one movie that I loved.
- 27:13Speaker 2: I thought it was excellent, but I only watched it
- 27:16Speaker 2: one time in the theaters and I've never watched it
- 27:18Speaker 2: again because I thought it was that disturbing. Anyway, the
- 27:22Speaker 2: plans are to do a movie with The Resurrection. I
- 27:26Speaker 2: think he would get the funding for that, and that
- 27:28Speaker 2: would be just an immaculate blockbuster, so let's continue.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I have ideas about how to do that, and ideas
- 27:36Speaker 3: about how to evoke things and emotions in people from
- 27:42Speaker 3: the way you depict it and the way you shoot it.
- 27:45Speaker 3: So I've been thinking about it for a long time.
- 27:49Speaker 3: So it's not going to be easy, and it's going
- 27:51Speaker 3: to require a lot of planning, and I'm not wholly
- 27:58Speaker 3: sure I can pull it off. To tell you the truth,
- 28:00Speaker 3: it's really super ambitious. But I'll take a crack at
- 28:04Speaker 3: it because that's what you got to do, right, walk
- 28:06Speaker 3: up to the plate, right. So I think I can
- 28:10Speaker 3: get it. But it's not about me, you know, It's
- 28:15Speaker 3: about something else.
- 28:17Speaker 4: Well, if anybody can do it, you can do it.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Well, I hope. So, yeah, it's it's a it's trying
- 28:23Speaker 3: to find that the way in that's not like cheesy
- 28:28Speaker 3: or obvious, but that actually it's almost like a magic
- 28:32Speaker 3: trick in a sense. It's diversion. It's obfuscate this show
- 28:39Speaker 3: that look over here, you know, I don't.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's do you have a title?
- 28:46Speaker 3: Uh? Yeah, it's just like the Resurrection of the Christ.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It's like, so that's a title, and yeah, it's uh,
- 28:58Speaker 3: it's very ambitious, that's all I'll say. It just it
- 29:01Speaker 3: took a long time to write. It's really ambitious and
- 29:03Speaker 3: it goes from like the Fall of the Angels to
- 29:05Speaker 3: the death of the Last Apostle.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Do you have a start date?
- 29:09Speaker 3: I don't have a start date. I just have to
- 29:11Speaker 3: begin pre production and see what happens. And it's it's
- 29:16Speaker 3: just going to roll in its own time. It's taken
- 29:19Speaker 3: its own time. I thought it was late. I think
- 29:21Speaker 3: taking too long. It's taken too long, but it's probably
- 29:24Speaker 3: just right. Yeah, it's when it's supposed to be.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah, well if you believe that that's true. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 29:33Speaker 3: I hope you're right.
- 29:34Speaker 4: I think my int are that I'm right.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Yeah, And if I was going to trust anybody with
- 29:39Speaker 4: that story, it would be you.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know. It's a massive thing, and theologically
- 29:47Speaker 3: it's it's something that you have to really look at
- 29:52Speaker 3: and make correlations that that ring true, because it's not
- 30:05Speaker 3: all written.
- 30:07Speaker 4: Do you consult with someone like a biblical scholar?
- 30:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, Oh my goodness, yeah yeah yeah. And
- 30:14Speaker 3: of course you know, there's your own a thing that
- 30:18Speaker 3: comes into it from having read the book a few times.
- 30:22Speaker 3: You read the book a few times, and it's amazing
- 30:27Speaker 3: how your memory, how there's these recessive files somewhere in
- 30:30Speaker 3: the background, how you can correlate this piece to that
- 30:33Speaker 3: piece over there. And that's important because juxtaposition is everything
- 30:37Speaker 3: with this story and what it means in a bigger picture.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 3: So it's hard to explain, but it's quite involved.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Yeah, well I can only imagine.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Yeah, And I don't know that you can do it
- 30:54Speaker 3: in a foreign language because the concepts are too difficult now,
- 30:58Speaker 3: so that you may have to resort to the vernacular.
- 31:02Speaker 3: So that that at least is clear.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Is that up for debate right now with you?
- 31:08Speaker 3: Yeah it is. I'm thinking like, eh, but look have
- 31:11Speaker 3: you seen these apps now where they have this AI
- 31:14Speaker 3: stuff where the guy's talking German and then he switches
- 31:16Speaker 3: to French and then he's Spanish and then Chinese. Have
- 31:19Speaker 3: you seen that? And his mouth moves and it's the
- 31:22Speaker 3: same voice. I mean, it's crazy what they do.
- 31:25Speaker 4: So, so are you going to use that kind of
- 31:27Speaker 4: a tool you think you could? Will you begin it
- 31:30Speaker 4: in Aramaic or in Hebrew?
- 31:33Speaker 3: Maybe? Yeah? Arameic is really the kick, isn't it? But
- 31:37Speaker 3: you know, I think I think I'll write I've written
- 31:40Speaker 3: it in English, but I wrote the last one in
- 31:43Speaker 3: English too and translated it. But and then the people
- 31:47Speaker 3: had to learn to speak it because there was I
- 31:50Speaker 3: think there's only about four hundred people that actually speak Aramaics. Wow,
- 31:54Speaker 3: and apparently they understood it. So I was happy about that. Wow,
- 31:57Speaker 3: So that was good. Yeah, four thousand people. Sorry, that
- 32:02Speaker 3: makes more sense.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Yeah, sorry, I've like to preserve those four hundred people.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Yeah, not many people speaking Latin still, but but that's
- 32:11Speaker 3: quite well known.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Well, I can't wait to see it, man. And I
- 32:16Speaker 4: just want to say I appreciate you very much all
- 32:18Speaker 4: all the stuff that you've done. You've made some really
- 32:22Speaker 4: awesome pieces in your life. You really have. Thanks. Yeah, yeah, thanks,
- 32:27Speaker 4: some great stuff.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I'm blown away by where you got to
- 32:32Speaker 3: with this, which is like, didn't you start off just
- 32:36Speaker 3: smoking a spliff on a couch with a guy?
- 32:38Speaker 4: And yeah?
- 32:40Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah it's amazing.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pretty bizarre.
- 32:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:44Speaker 4: I'm not exactly sure how it happened.
- 32:46Speaker 3: No, that's good.
- 32:47Speaker 4: I just kind of kept doing it.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Yeah okay, yeah, yeah, I'm a fan.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 32:51Speaker 3: I watch it all the time.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Thank you. There was no plan to do it, I'll
- 32:55Speaker 4: tell you that. No, it still kind of isn't. I
- 32:59Speaker 4: still kind of do it the same way.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Okay, every day you wake up.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I just look at my phone. I'll go online.
- 33:05Speaker 4: I say, who do I want to talk to?
- 33:07Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 33:07Speaker 4: This guy might be interesting?
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, okay that's really who's next? You get some
- 33:13Speaker 3: pretty interesting people. Yeah. I was amazed at that. I
- 33:20Speaker 3: can't remember his name now, Terrence what he's all into?
- 33:24Speaker 4: Terrence Howard? Yeah, yeah, the actor.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I had a bunch of stuff going on.
- 33:28Speaker 4: I was like, whoa, yeah, oh he's out there.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, okay, So the interview is almost over, but
- 33:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna interrupt right there. Terrence Howard, if you haven't
- 33:39Speaker 2: seen his interviews on YouTube or anywhere else, this guy
- 33:44Speaker 2: is a freaky smart, intelligent guy who's trying to rewrite
- 33:50Speaker 2: mathematical principles. He's just amazing. So if you get a chance,
- 33:57Speaker 2: I'm gonna plug this one. If you get a chance,
- 34:00Speaker 2: listen to Terrence Howard's interview with Joe Rogan and in Actuality.
- 34:05Speaker 2: I am going to review that one next because if
- 34:09Speaker 2: you haven't heard it, you need to hear it.
- 34:12Speaker 3: And it's so interesting.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Because as great of an actor as this guy is,
- 34:16Speaker 2: he is brilliant, mathematically, brilliant with scientific principles. I mean,
- 34:21Speaker 2: it's just something that you can't even he would never
- 34:24Speaker 2: expect from him. So we don't have much longer in
