- 0:00Speaker 1: The Morning Show with Preston Scott. Good to have you
- 0:02Speaker 1: with me. I am thrilled to talk about this topic.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Joining me is Clint Patterson and Mark Evans. Clint is
- 0:09Speaker 1: the son of Roger Patterson. And for those of you
- 0:11Speaker 1: that don't know, Roger Patterson's a guy who captured something
- 0:15Speaker 1: on film that has been the source of legend, perhaps.
- 0:20Speaker 1: And Mark is the director of a documentary called Capturing Bigfoot.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And I just gave it away. Clint, Mark, welcome to
- 0:26Speaker 1: the program. How are you?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Doing great.
- 0:28Speaker 3: How you doing?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Good.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Clint, let's start with you. What do you remember first
- 0:35Speaker 1: and most about the day your dad came back with
- 0:38Speaker 1: that film?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. They pulled into the driveway, and I
- 0:44Speaker 2: was out in the yard doing something, goofing around, and
- 0:48Speaker 2: they unloaded the horses. out of this truck and they
- 0:52Speaker 2: come over and handed me, my dad come over and
- 0:54Speaker 2: handed me the lead ropes to the two horses to
- 0:57Speaker 2: go put them away. And he goes, we got one
- 0:59Speaker 2: on film. And I can remember, I just went, wow,
- 1:03Speaker 2: they finally did it. Cause that's what he was out
- 1:06Speaker 2: to do. And, uh, when he, when he said we
- 1:09Speaker 2: got one on film, he turned, he turned away from
- 1:12Speaker 2: me in hindsight is, is, you know, he, he didn't
- 1:16Speaker 2: look me in the eye and, uh, because he knew.
- 1:20Speaker 4: What they had done.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You know, they had hoaxed it.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Clint, how long had he been looking for this evidence?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Oh, I think, you know, at that time, at least
- 1:32Speaker 2: probably five or six years.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And so this was the culmination of years of looking.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And what was his, I mean, what was his visceral
- 1:43Speaker 1: reaction to the fact that he had this so tangibly
- 1:46Speaker 1: now recorded on film?
- 1:48Speaker 2: Well, I mean, he was out to prove that they existed.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I know that for a fact, and he believed that
- 1:55Speaker 2: there was something out there to prove. I mean, he had...
- 2:00Speaker 2: bought dark guns with tranquilizers. He had bought a big
- 2:04Speaker 2: old international truck that he was going to transport one in.
- 2:08Speaker 2: He was going to take it to the San Diego Zoo,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and they were going to observe it and then see
- 2:15Speaker 2: what it was, and then they were going to turn
- 2:17Speaker 2: it loose after they observed it. He was out to
- 2:22Speaker 2: definitely make sure that people that have seen something He
- 2:28Speaker 2: was going to validate what they had seen, and he
- 2:32Speaker 2: wanted to capture one and prove it to everybody.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Clint Patterson with me. That's the voice you're listening to now,
- 2:38Speaker 1: the son of Roger Patterson. He's the man who has
- 2:42Speaker 1: arguably the second most famous film in American history, the
- 2:46Speaker 1: first being the Zapruder film, The Assassination of JFK. This
- 2:50Speaker 1: is right behind it. You say Patterson film. People know
- 2:53Speaker 1: what that is. Mark Evans, the director of this documentary
- 2:57Speaker 1: capturing Bigfoot. Mark, when does this get on your timeline
- 3:01Speaker 1: and your radar as something you want to be part of?
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know what? We even say in the
- 3:07Speaker 3: film it's the second most scrutinized footage behind this Bruder film.
- 3:10Speaker 3: But somebody brought up to me just yesterday, and I
- 3:13Speaker 3: kind of agree with them, that it probably is the
- 3:15Speaker 3: most famous footage of all time because... of the massive
- 3:18Speaker 3: industry that created it. It's not like you've got bumper
- 3:21Speaker 3: stickers and yard signs of Kennedy assassination, right? Like you
- 3:25Speaker 3: do this Bigfoot film. But, you know, I've known about
- 3:29Speaker 3: the Patterson film since I was a kid. My dad
- 3:31Speaker 3: had kind of told me some stories about it, but
- 3:34Speaker 3: I never was setting out to make a film about it.
- 3:36Speaker 3: It really, the story really just fell in my lap.
- 3:38Speaker 3: And that started in June of 2022. You know, I
- 3:43Speaker 3: didn't know Clint. I wouldn't know him for a year
- 3:45Speaker 3: after that. And this is when I get an email
- 3:47Speaker 3: from somebody I didn't know saying that, hey, I've got
- 3:50Speaker 3: this Bigfoot footage on a 16 millimeter film reel that's
- 3:53Speaker 3: been locked in my dad's safe for 50 years. My
- 3:56Speaker 3: parents have passed. I want to know a little bit
- 3:58Speaker 3: more about what's the story with this Bigfoot on this reel.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And so at first I was just helping her get
- 4:06Speaker 3: the film scanned so she could see it, and it
- 4:08Speaker 3: just raised so many questions because it was very similar
- 4:11Speaker 3: in many ways to the famous Patterson film, but the
- 4:15Speaker 3: codes on the film... indicated that it was shot prior
- 4:19Speaker 3: to the famous film. And with all these similarities just
- 4:23Speaker 3: raised a lot of questions. And, you know, it was
- 4:26Speaker 3: six to nine months of kind of research and development
- 4:28Speaker 3: before I realized, oh, this might be a film worth pursuing.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And during that time, I was reading about Clint's dad
- 4:34Speaker 3: and his friends that were these cowboys from Yakima, Washington.
- 4:38Speaker 3: And I thought this was just an incredible story of
- 4:41Speaker 3: how they went about filming this Bigfoot and the aftermath.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I mean, it's just a a wild story that took place,
- 4:49Speaker 3: and that's really what kicked off this whole project.
- 4:52Speaker 1: When you started the project, Mark, how would you categorize
- 4:56Speaker 1: yourself on the topic of Bigfoot?
- 5:00Speaker 3: Um, certainly not in the field at all. Uh, I'm
- 5:05Speaker 3: from Washington state. I live in Washington state. So it's
- 5:07Speaker 3: just part of the culture out here and, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: people have a lot of fun with it, but I'm
- 5:11Speaker 3: not somebody that was ever, you know, had ever really
- 5:13Speaker 3: looked into it or certainly not somebody that, you know,
- 5:17Speaker 3: is out in the field trying to find one. um, just,
- 5:20Speaker 3: you know, like, like most people in Washington state, it's
- 5:22Speaker 3: just kind of everywhere. And we're, we're proud of it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You know, like I grew up with the Seattle supersonics
- 5:27Speaker 3: and there was a Sasquatch mascot, right. So more, more
- 5:29Speaker 3: of that kind of thing, but certainly digging into the story. Um,
- 5:33Speaker 3: what I found compelling was, was less about, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 3: the Bigfoot, but it was about the people that were
- 5:38Speaker 3: trying to figure out if it existed or not.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Did you come into it as skeptic on the topic though,
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the existence of Bigfoot, or was it kind of
- 5:45Speaker 1: like one of those things that Well, you grew up,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and it's sort of a tradition and a legend of
- 5:49Speaker 1: the area. This is kind of interesting because of the
- 5:52Speaker 1: people involved. And did your research, did your digging change
- 5:57Speaker 1: anything for you?
- 5:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't say I remember ever really thinking about it,
- 6:00Speaker 3: whether I thought Bigfoot was real or not. I do
- 6:02Speaker 3: remember when my son was little, he'd talk about it
- 6:06Speaker 3: a little bit, and maybe my mindset was like, well,
- 6:10Speaker 3: it's probably not real because it's never been actually proven
- 6:14Speaker 3: that it is. But, you know, there are all these
- 6:17Speaker 3: stories out there, and, you know, you can take people
- 6:19Speaker 3: at their word. Now, certainly during the making of this film,
- 6:22Speaker 3: we definitely, you know, figured out a lot more about
- 6:26Speaker 3: the Patterson Bigfoot film and whether that was real or not,
- 6:28Speaker 3: whether that was a real Bigfoot. But as it relates
- 6:31Speaker 3: to just Bigfoot in general, I mean, I don't know.
- 6:34Speaker 3: There's a lot of stories we heard that are pretty compelling.
- 6:36Speaker 3: So I'm probably a little bit more... uh, open to
- 6:40Speaker 3: the idea than I was when we started the project,
- 6:43Speaker 3: but I'm still kind of, you know, down the middle,
- 6:45Speaker 3: as far as that goes.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Mark Evans with me, director of the documentary, capturing Bigfoot,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Clint Patterson, the son of Roger Patterson, who filmed the, well, Clint,
- 6:55Speaker 1: what do you think he filmed?
- 6:57Speaker 4: I know what he filmed. I mean, when, uh, Mark,
- 7:02Speaker 4: And Tamir showed me the footage that they found that
- 7:05Speaker 4: had been put away. I go, my dad was such
- 7:08Speaker 4: a perfectionist that he would have done several practice runs
- 7:13Speaker 4: leading up to the famous footage.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And I know what he filmed. He filmed Bob Hieronymus
- 7:19Speaker 2: in a suit. And it pulled off. It got its
- 7:24Speaker 2: own legs and took off. And all of a sudden,
- 7:27Speaker 2: my dad's on Johnny Carson and Merv Griffith and Art
- 7:32Speaker 2: Linkzider and all these shows. I go, my dad's famous.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And you know what? A lot of people got to
- 7:39Speaker 2: say after watching it and stuff that, oh, it can't
- 7:43Speaker 2: be a man in a suit. Well, I got to
- 7:46Speaker 2: a point where when I knew it, I had to
- 7:49Speaker 2: tell the truth.
- 7:50Speaker 1: What has the reaction been, Clint? And Mark, feel free
- 7:53Speaker 1: to jump in here. This thing debuted on Prime Video
- 7:58Speaker 1: back on October 20th, and now it's had a few
- 8:01Speaker 1: days to percolate. It's in some theaters. What reaction are
- 8:04Speaker 1: you getting to it?
- 8:06Speaker 2: I know at the end of the show when the
- 8:09Speaker 2: credits start rolling and stuff, it's just applause and hugs
- 8:14Speaker 2: and handshakes. A lot of people are really enjoying what
- 8:19Speaker 2: they get to watch.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, the response is all over the board.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I think documentary film lovers are absolutely falling in love
- 8:27Speaker 3: with the film because of Clint and his dad and
- 8:30Speaker 3: the characters and this just emotional journey. And then you've
- 8:33Speaker 3: got people that are interested in the Bigfoot subject, and
- 8:36Speaker 3: they're split because there's a lot of passion, let's just say,
- 8:40Speaker 3: in the subject matter.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And and we've got people, you know, saying, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 3: what an amazing film. It's the best documentary I've ever seen. It's,
- 8:48Speaker 3: you know, hands down the best Bigfoot documentary I've ever seen.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And it proves this and it proves that. Or you
- 8:52Speaker 3: have other people saying, oh, sorry, guys, you didn't prove anything.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So it really, you know, our goal was to make
- 8:58Speaker 3: a great film. Clint wanted to tell the truth. And and,
- 9:02Speaker 3: you know, we definitely hit our goals, you know, that
- 9:06Speaker 3: we were going for with this film.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Mark, Clint, thanks very much. We appreciate you making time
- 9:10Speaker 1: for us this morning, and best of success in your futures.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Thanks a lot.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I really appreciate it.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Mark Evans, the director, Clint Patterson, the son of Roger Patterson,
- 9:19Speaker 1: who filmed Bigfoot, or didn't film Bigfoot, but filmed somebody
- 9:25Speaker 1: portraying Bigfoot. We just broke a lot of hearts right there.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's The Morning Show with Preston Scott.
