- 1:18Speaker 2: Kenyon on the line of Wired to Hunt Fame. Mark,
- 1:23Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you, thank you, gentlemen.
- 1:25Speaker 4: It's good to be here.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Yeah, it's we were just talking before we start recording
- 1:29Speaker 5: that this might be like season seven or eight or
- 1:32Speaker 5: nine of Reugh Fresh.
- 1:34Speaker 4: As a mini series of Wired Hunt.
- 1:35Speaker 5: I don't know exactly what it is, but it's We've
- 1:37Speaker 5: been doing this a long time and I'm very excited
- 1:40Speaker 5: that it's still going and that you guys are at
- 1:42Speaker 5: the helm helping keep this this part of the ship
- 1:45Speaker 5: afloat because this is one of my personal favorite things
- 1:48Speaker 5: we do every year. So thanks for being back, gentlemen.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Absolutely, man, it's a lot of fun.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It's cool getting to talk to people around the country
- 1:55Speaker 2: and of course getting to talk to you from time
- 1:57Speaker 2: to time to hear the Michigan viewpoint on on things.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And I think that was a question I wanted to
- 2:02Speaker 2: ask you, thinking about, you know, the history of Retfresh radio.
- 2:07Speaker 2: You know, you remark that this is one of your
- 2:08Speaker 2: favorite things that comes out. Do you have a situation
- 2:13Speaker 2: that you can remember where information given on Retfresh directly
- 2:17Speaker 2: impacted a hunt and maybe brought you a bug?
- 2:21Speaker 5: Hmmm, that's a good question, and off the top of
- 2:24Speaker 5: my head, I don't know if I could think of
- 2:27Speaker 5: a like specific situation where, like, man, what I heard
- 2:30Speaker 5: this day impacted my hunts, you know, right away, and
- 2:33Speaker 5: I killed the deer because of it. But it definitely
- 2:35Speaker 5: is like I make a I don't listen to I
- 2:39Speaker 5: don't listen to my own podcasts obviously because.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I don't want to hear myself. Schever, Joe, I'll take
- 2:43Speaker 4: that back.
- 2:44Speaker 5: I occasionally do re listen to like really old archival ones,
- 2:47Speaker 5: and I just like fast forward the intro where I
- 2:49Speaker 5: talk for a long time because I want to hear
- 2:51Speaker 5: like just that guest is I don't remember the stuff,
- 2:54Speaker 5: but in the season, like I'm not listening to new
- 2:56Speaker 5: stuff of course, So what I do listen to those.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I do like to listen to every brought fresh radio
- 3:00Speaker 5: because you're hearing from you know, four or five different
- 3:03Speaker 5: people across the country. They've got different ideas. They're seeing
- 3:06Speaker 5: things that maybe I'll be seeing soon or maybe I
- 3:09Speaker 5: just saw. And I'm curious of compare notes. So I
- 3:12Speaker 5: can't think of a specific example right now. I can
- 3:14Speaker 5: tell you, like two thousand percent it has helped me.
- 3:18Speaker 5: It has like kept me, you know, keeping ideas fresh
- 3:20Speaker 5: in my mind, or gave me a new idea or
- 3:23Speaker 5: pointing me in a direction that maybe just got me
- 3:25Speaker 5: thinking about something that I was able to apply later
- 3:28Speaker 5: down the road. So yeah, like the idea of what
- 3:31Speaker 5: this thing, what we wanted this thing to be. However
- 3:34Speaker 5: many years ago it was that we started this, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 5: mini series. It has absolutely become that thing, like the
- 3:40Speaker 5: thing that I want. You know, It's like every week
- 3:43Speaker 5: I like to text my buddies or call a couple
- 3:45Speaker 5: of friends saying, hey, what are you seeing?
- 3:46Speaker 4: What what are you doing?
- 3:47Speaker 5: What's how's that call front impacting you? Or what do
- 3:50Speaker 5: you think about this moon phase? Or man, how's the
- 3:52Speaker 5: drop and impacting your dear sidings? Right, I'm sure you
- 3:54Speaker 5: guys have got a bunch of buddies that you're kind
- 3:55Speaker 5: of you know, John with back and forth and comparing notes,
- 3:59Speaker 5: and this is a way to do that, but on
- 4:01Speaker 5: a weekly scale with a much wider network.
- 4:05Speaker 4: So we all are really lucky that we get to
- 4:07Speaker 4: tap into this, I.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Think every week, and you know, I'm certainly enjoying and
- 4:11Speaker 5: benefiting from it. So what was it like if you
- 4:14Speaker 5: don't mind me stealing your thunder and asking you guys
- 4:17Speaker 5: a question?
- 4:18Speaker 4: Now, you know, what was the experience like for you
- 4:20Speaker 4: guys last year?
- 4:21Speaker 5: Because you for years, right, you guys were occasionally guests
- 4:25Speaker 5: on Refresh Radio and like sharing what you were seeing
- 4:28Speaker 5: with people when Spencer called you, and maybe you listened
- 4:31Speaker 5: to some episodes of Refresh Radio.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Back in the day and use that to get some ideas.
- 4:35Speaker 5: What was the experience like last year being put into
- 4:39Speaker 5: the driver's seat and all of a sudden you were
- 4:41Speaker 5: hosting the miniseries. You were you know, asking people questions.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Did that ended up?
- 4:46Speaker 5: You know, was it did you learn more because of that?
- 4:49Speaker 5: Or was it did you just blaze over and forget
- 4:51Speaker 5: it all?
- 4:52Speaker 3: What was that? Like? No, I think it was a
- 4:54Speaker 3: learning experience, man, I feel like, so there was this
- 4:58Speaker 3: weird thing that happened, which you actually, I think this
- 5:01Speaker 3: is off air, but we were talking about some one
- 5:03Speaker 3: week stuff and you kind of had the same sentiment
- 5:07Speaker 3: where we were out in the field, like the first
- 5:11Speaker 3: week in November and there was some pretty sluggish movement.
- 5:15Speaker 3: And you know, if you were just hunting with your
- 5:20Speaker 3: buddies in a certain area of the US and you
- 5:23Speaker 3: saw that sluggish movement in early November, you might just
- 5:26Speaker 3: be like, oh, they're nocturnal, it's too hot. Whatever, you know,
- 5:30Speaker 3: you or just whatever. You may not really understand this,
- 5:32Speaker 3: but I mean legitimately, one thing we learned last year
- 5:36Speaker 3: through doing Retfresh was that the like a big portion
- 5:40Speaker 3: of the US actually had I mean like a late rut.
- 5:44Speaker 3: I mean it was legitimately a week behind or more
- 5:47Speaker 3: in a lot of places. It seemed like, I mean
- 5:49Speaker 3: across the board, we heard that that was the case.
- 5:51Speaker 3: And I don't know, there's so many variables, right, like
- 5:54Speaker 3: it could be you know, a million different things from
- 5:57Speaker 3: whether temperatures to moon or whatever. But and we travel
- 6:02Speaker 3: a lot too, so we were seeing that in multiple states,
- 6:04Speaker 3: multiple areas. But to be able to have those guys
- 6:07Speaker 3: say hey, for some reason, like you know, the teens
- 6:12Speaker 3: of November were way better than the first you know,
- 6:15Speaker 3: ten days, and it just kind of it makes you
- 6:18Speaker 3: feel like you're a little less on an island. And
- 6:20Speaker 3: then yeah, I also think that like there's a huge
- 6:24Speaker 3: inspiration factor here on this podcast where it's like, uh,
- 6:30Speaker 3: you may you know, you get so wrapped up and
- 6:32Speaker 3: works a lot of times that you just kind of
- 6:34Speaker 3: forget to check the weather and be excited about what's coming,
- 6:38Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, you know you're working,
- 6:40Speaker 3: you're building a house, you know you're a framer or
- 6:41Speaker 3: whatever you might be. You got the podcast going on
- 6:44Speaker 3: refreshing somebody's you know, in your neck of the woods
- 6:47Speaker 3: or where you're going to end up being in November,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and they're like, well next you know, you ask them
- 6:51Speaker 3: scale one to ten, what what's the next week look
- 6:54Speaker 3: like for you? You're like, well, there's a cold front
- 6:56Speaker 3: coming in, and all of a sudden you just HiPE
- 6:58Speaker 3: and you start making plans and it is It is
- 7:00Speaker 3: inspirational where like you want to get in the woods
- 7:02Speaker 3: because you figure out like maybe things are happening and
- 7:06Speaker 3: you got too busy for a little bit there, or
- 7:07Speaker 3: even just a guy may be like hey, and you
- 7:10Speaker 3: you kind of a loaded this earlier, but like, hey,
- 7:13Speaker 3: since this is happening, you can kill a deer in
- 7:17Speaker 3: this way and you didn't think about that until then,
- 7:20Speaker 3: And all of a sudden you're like, yeah, let's let's
- 7:22Speaker 3: try that next week.
- 7:23Speaker 5: You know, yeah, well, you guys have talked about this
- 7:26Speaker 5: for years. The benefit of like having a hunting buddy
- 7:29Speaker 5: with you just is like throwing new ideas at you
- 7:32Speaker 5: right just to like trigger different thoughts or that you're
- 7:34Speaker 5: hearing what they're doing and that makes you think maybe
- 7:36Speaker 5: I should just rethink, you know, get out of your
- 7:38Speaker 5: own little tunnel vision a little bit. I've always felt
- 7:41Speaker 5: like this podcast kind of functions in that kind of
- 7:43Speaker 5: way because every single week you're getting five different hunting
- 7:46Speaker 5: buddies ideas for the week or perspective from that week,
- 7:49Speaker 5: and it's the same kind of thing.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Can just like get you out.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Of your own head and get some new stuff into
- 7:55Speaker 5: the mix, and that sometimes is all you need to
- 7:57Speaker 5: get point in.
- 7:58Speaker 4: The right direction.
- 7:59Speaker 5: So there's a long winded way of saying, I'm excited
- 8:02Speaker 5: for what's coming this week and all these nice couple
- 8:06Speaker 5: of months.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I think that hype is a big part
- 8:08Speaker 2: of what makes this fun, you know, like the best part, dude.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Oh man, It's just like right now we're on the
- 8:14Speaker 2: cusp of like why to hunting. Some people are even
- 8:17Speaker 2: already doing it, you know, and we'll talk to those
- 8:19Speaker 2: guys here in a minute. But there's like this aspect
- 8:23Speaker 2: of you know, kay Tyler's talking about like around the country,
- 8:25Speaker 2: there's also like this upwelling of just all of us
- 8:28Speaker 2: people who are deer hunters that are all just kind
- 8:30Speaker 2: of starting to get excited. And one of the things
- 8:32Speaker 2: that I noticed last year was that people would and
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm not because I think that people's ratings.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Are their ratings.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I don't try to like read too much into it, right,
- 8:42Speaker 2: But you hardly ever have anybody who's like, oh it's
- 8:45Speaker 2: it wasn't very good.
- 8:46Speaker 3: It's like a two.
- 8:47Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:47Speaker 2: They'll be like, oh, it's not very good. It's like
- 8:49Speaker 2: a five. And it's like that's because you love to
- 8:51Speaker 2: deer hunt man. Even when it's not good, it's still
- 8:53Speaker 2: pretty good, you know. So it's a little bit encouraging
- 8:56Speaker 2: when you start hearing those numbers, you know, because I
- 8:57Speaker 2: could I can remember doing this. Some people like it
- 9:00Speaker 2: was okay, I'll give it like a seven. I was like, hey,
- 9:02Speaker 2: seven is pretty good, man, I.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Say that too. There a couple of times, Casey where
- 9:08Speaker 4: you were trying to get people to be a little
- 9:09Speaker 4: more realistic, like, come on, really.
- 9:11Speaker 6: This is.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Maybe I try to be a realist, but you know, man,
- 9:17Speaker 2: that internal optimist just shines through sometimes.
- 9:19Speaker 3: So I appreciate it.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So, you know, I think that's why we asked the
- 9:23Speaker 2: questions and don't just ask for the ratings, right, so
- 9:26Speaker 2: you get a little bit more insight into that stuff.
- 9:28Speaker 5: So, right, I love that just you get the color,
- 9:31Speaker 5: you get, you know, a prediction of what they're expecting
- 9:34Speaker 5: is coming week or what they just experienced last week.
- 9:36Speaker 5: But then also, you know, I've always found my favorite
- 9:39Speaker 5: thing is like hearing a specific person's you know, particular
- 9:45Speaker 5: ideas for how they dealt with like this, so circumstances,
- 9:47Speaker 5: like what did you think about this very specific thing?
- 9:50Speaker 4: Or you know, I love the details in this show.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Like a lot of long podcasts, like my regular shows, right,
- 9:56Speaker 5: you can talk to some thee for an hour and
- 9:58Speaker 5: a half and you're kind of all over the place
- 10:00Speaker 5: stories and yeah, yeah, yeah, and that's great. But what
- 10:03Speaker 5: I've always liked about Rough Fresh is like when you
- 10:05Speaker 5: can be like, man, all right, there was cold weather
- 10:08Speaker 5: three days ago the hit Nebraska. How did that impact
- 10:12Speaker 5: things for you in the eastern part of the state,
- 10:14Speaker 5: Like I can sew think, those very specific things just
- 10:18Speaker 5: shine a different kind of light that you can then
- 10:20Speaker 5: apply to you know, your own your own hunts.
- 10:23Speaker 3: So yeaheah, I love it, yeah exactly.
- 10:26Speaker 2: And speaking of applying things to your own hunts, Mark,
- 10:28Speaker 2: if I remember right, we did this intro episode last
- 10:30Speaker 2: year and you kind of had a theme for this
- 10:33Speaker 2: season that was and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 10:35Speaker 2: but essentially it's like a back to basics or maybe
- 10:41Speaker 2: I don't know how to how to say this show
- 10:42Speaker 2: but not.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Cool values like what what getting back to? Like why
- 10:46Speaker 3: you do this?
- 10:46Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Not trying too hard for the wrong reasons, right, And
- 10:50Speaker 2: it seems like that really paid off for you. I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 2: you had a great season last year. You killed some
- 10:54Speaker 2: really nice bucks man, so congrats on that. And so
- 10:58Speaker 2: giving forward to this year, are are you continuing on
- 11:02Speaker 2: and trying to kind of expand upon that approach or
- 11:06Speaker 2: do you look at this season differently?
- 11:08Speaker 4: So so.
- 11:11Speaker 5: I'm trying to avoid the sophomore slump. So if if
- 11:15Speaker 5: last year, like I was, my hunting buddies, like another
- 11:17Speaker 5: group chat called it fun season, like hashtag fun season.
- 11:20Speaker 5: Whenever they're like joking, they're referring to like my year,
- 11:23Speaker 5: like the what I was trying to do just get
- 11:25Speaker 5: back to having fun and everything.
- 11:27Speaker 4: So fun season was a huge success last year.
- 11:30Speaker 5: I can already feel like some of the old just
- 11:34Speaker 5: things about me like kind of coming back in like
- 11:37Speaker 5: I can find I can see myself like ah, man,
- 11:39Speaker 5: you know, would be really kind of fun to hold
- 11:42Speaker 5: out for that like big, big giant and maybe that
- 11:45Speaker 5: one buck only and or maybe I gotta go to
- 11:48Speaker 5: Illinois because I didn't get after like a really certain
- 11:50Speaker 5: specific kind of deer.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Like all these things that you know, I.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Like to do that are fun to do, but could
- 11:55Speaker 5: like put you know, more pressure or more whatever on me.
- 11:59Speaker 5: I want to like maintain some like moderation across what
- 12:03Speaker 5: I do instead of becoming a freak, which I think
- 12:05Speaker 5: has always been like my one of my kryptonites. So
- 12:09Speaker 5: I want to maintain the fun season spirit and not
- 12:12Speaker 5: fall back into my old way. So that's the biggest thing,
- 12:14Speaker 5: is like not get too hung up on any one
- 12:16Speaker 5: thing too much. Just have fun with it. And I
- 12:22Speaker 5: mean that's that's really it. I mean, I just I
- 12:24Speaker 5: felt really good about last year. What I guess I
- 12:27Speaker 5: realized though, is like not every year is going to
- 12:30Speaker 5: go that well, right. I mean, so I've constantly reminded
- 12:33Speaker 5: myself this past year is like you can do everything
- 12:35Speaker 5: right and you're still gonna have some of those years
- 12:38Speaker 5: where you know, things just don't fall into place the
- 12:40Speaker 5: right way.
- 12:40Speaker 4: So last year I did.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Them some things right and things did fall my way.
- 12:45Speaker 5: This year, I might do it all right, and it
- 12:46Speaker 5: just cars might be different, so I need to make sure.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Like I'm okay with that.
- 12:51Speaker 5: But all that said, you know, I've been organizing my
- 12:54Speaker 5: my hunts and my plans and stuff around getting some
- 12:57Speaker 5: more time with friends and family while still doing some
- 13:00Speaker 5: great hunts.
- 13:00Speaker 4: So I'm really excited about that.
- 13:02Speaker 5: And you know, this is really everything that I had
- 13:06Speaker 5: last year going into it.
- 13:07Speaker 4: It's just trying to maintain it this year. I'm not
- 13:09Speaker 4: changing the script. I just want to like make sure
- 13:11Speaker 4: it wasn't a fluke.
- 13:12Speaker 5: I want to show some consistency and that continue to
- 13:15Speaker 5: kind of mature as a hunter, enjoy it, really keep
- 13:18Speaker 5: keep that good thing going, and you know, we'll see
- 13:21Speaker 5: where the cards fall. But but yeah, I'm it's a
- 13:24Speaker 5: very long winded way of saying I'm excited to have fun.
- 13:27Speaker 5: I'm excited to do some hunt with my dad, excited
- 13:29Speaker 5: to do some more hunting with our buddy Hilliard. I'm
- 13:32Speaker 5: excited to get after some local deer but also do
- 13:34Speaker 5: a couple of fun trips. And man, it's almost here.
- 13:37Speaker 5: I leave for my first trip next week, so Costa.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Man, that's cool. Your first trip is next week.
- 13:43Speaker 2: If people are listening the week this comes out, there
- 13:46Speaker 2: is a awesome hunt from you from last year. That's
- 13:50Speaker 2: one of the bucks were alluding to that just came
- 13:51Speaker 2: out for one week in November.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Right, yeah, Yeah, So then you go.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Check that out if they If they haven't, we'll put
- 13:57Speaker 2: a link to that in the description as well so
- 14:00Speaker 2: that they can take a look at that. It sounds
- 14:02Speaker 2: like you've got some new territory opened up to you
- 14:05Speaker 2: there as well, So y'all kind of got a little
- 14:08Speaker 2: bit excitement going there. Tyler and I just got back
- 14:13Speaker 2: from a little bit of a trip but haven't got
- 14:15Speaker 2: to do any white tail hunt yet. I think our
- 14:17Speaker 2: first white tail hunt's going to be at the end
- 14:18Speaker 2: of September, and we're pretty stoked for that. In fact,
- 14:21Speaker 2: that's like one of my favorite times of the year
- 14:23Speaker 2: to hunt. Not everywhere has a season opened, but it's
- 14:26Speaker 2: like you still have that summer pattern going and those
- 14:30Speaker 2: deer are just so predictable. So I'm pretty excited about
- 14:33Speaker 2: the white tail season.
- 14:34Speaker 7: Man.
- 14:34Speaker 2: I think that we're all slated for something good to
- 14:37Speaker 2: happen now in what amounts who knows, right, Because like
- 14:41Speaker 2: you said, the interesting thing about deer is that no
- 14:46Speaker 2: matter how many variables you think you control, the deer
- 14:49Speaker 2: still do what they want to do. And I think
- 14:52Speaker 2: that's why we're able to talk to four people around
- 14:55Speaker 2: the country every week and get you know, interesting takes
- 14:57Speaker 2: because Tyler and I were talking about it well ago, man.
- 15:00Speaker 3: The neat thing about whitetail is they're all different.
- 15:02Speaker 2: You know, like you can look at a mule deer
- 15:05Speaker 2: that is a big one, but it looks like all
- 15:08Speaker 2: the other big ones usually you know, it's a four
- 15:09Speaker 2: by four that has a big old frame. Or you
- 15:12Speaker 2: look at an elk, you know, like a six or
- 15:13Speaker 2: six is a big one, and they're awesome and they're
- 15:15Speaker 2: one of my favorite creatures.
- 15:16Speaker 3: But whitetail are so unique.
- 15:19Speaker 2: You know, Tyler's got a bunch of deer on the
- 15:21Speaker 2: wall right now that we're looking at, and not on
- 15:23Speaker 2: one of them looks like the other one. And they
- 15:25Speaker 2: come from all over the country. There's so many different
- 15:28Speaker 2: hunting opportunities for them in so many different seasons that
- 15:30Speaker 2: stretch from you know, July into February, right, And that's
- 15:34Speaker 2: really what makes this thing feel like a big old campfire,
- 15:38Speaker 2: right because we're all doing this kind of our unique
- 15:40Speaker 2: way in different parts of the country. But we're all
- 15:42Speaker 2: hunting the same critter and it makes things very exciting.
- 15:46Speaker 5: And it's next to college football this time of year.
- 15:49Speaker 5: It's the best dang thing out there.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Golley Man Sparty must have had a good first week.
- 15:54Speaker 4: It was.
- 15:54Speaker 5: It was okay, but I'm still I'm still I'm still
- 15:56Speaker 5: hyped about it.
- 15:57Speaker 3: It was you know, there's something to be this.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Iired from the Spartans this year, but I'm maintaining hope
- 16:03Speaker 5: for mediocrity.
- 16:04Speaker 3: We'll be They're not sitting in you know, prime territory,
- 16:07Speaker 3: if you know what I mean.
- 16:07Speaker 4: So, no, not this year, but we'll good bye on
- 16:11Speaker 4: season one season.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Okay, So how many how many de are you gonna
- 16:14Speaker 3: shoot this year? How many bucks?
- 16:16Speaker 4: Oh?
- 16:16Speaker 5: Dude, two is probably realistic. You know, I'd be really
- 16:23Speaker 5: I'd be happy if I can get two good ones
- 16:25Speaker 5: on the ground. I could shoot up to four. I
- 16:29Speaker 5: think I've got four up to I think five buck
- 16:32Speaker 5: takes probably when it's all said and done, But being realistic,
- 16:36Speaker 5: two would be pretty solid, certainly possible more, but well,
- 16:40Speaker 5: I'm gonna try to manage my expectations and say two
- 16:42Speaker 5: across all those trips at all at least happen.
- 16:46Speaker 3: That's the most conservative thing I've heard you say.
- 16:48Speaker 4: More. You're rubbing off on the t.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Well, I'm gonna kill five, Mark, not to try to
- 17:00Speaker 3: up you, but I just doing my optimistic thing this year.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I gotta, I gotta do it because if I'm gonna
- 17:04Speaker 3: hang out with KC, you know, just try it.
- 17:06Speaker 2: You can't do anything, but Mark, I think you're gonna
- 17:08Speaker 2: con Moordan that just so you know, but I appreciate
- 17:10Speaker 2: your conservatism there, and you're gonna have an awesome season.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Tyler, five is a good number. That's a good over,
- 17:15Speaker 3: a nunder. That's what number I was in high school?
- 17:17Speaker 3: Was it?
- 17:18Speaker 5: You guys, you guys fling them like I believe you're
- 17:22Speaker 5: gonna make it that.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah, well you shoot at shoot at might be like twelve,
- 17:26Speaker 2: you know, So it's a numbers game, that's right, man,
- 17:31Speaker 2: you have enough airs in the air. One I'm gonna
- 17:32Speaker 2: land here or later. It's just joking, everybody, just joking.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But if you did listen to Mark's podcast recently, we
- 17:38Speaker 2: did say Tyler and I both are confident at fifty
- 17:40Speaker 2: yards in a certain situation. So you know that's not
- 17:44Speaker 2: for everyone and not every not every fifty yard opportunity
- 17:47Speaker 2: is one you should take, but you know, under the
- 17:49Speaker 2: right conditions. I think I put my over and under
- 17:53Speaker 2: at six. Being an alchemist, I am let's go. We
- 17:55Speaker 2: have a couple more draws to come out still, it's
- 17:58Speaker 2: maybe might help out with some tag allocation there and Florida. Yeah,
- 18:06Speaker 2: but uh man, I think that it is. I shot
- 18:09Speaker 2: five last year, and I'm not trying to I'm not
- 18:14Speaker 2: trying to brag because the last one is onber November eighth,
- 18:16Speaker 2: and then I hunted like two months after that didn't
- 18:19Speaker 2: kill one, so it was kind of front loaded. I'd
- 18:22Speaker 2: like to spread them out a little bit more this year.
- 18:24Speaker 5: And uh yeah, I believe in you, Casey. I gotta say,
- 18:31Speaker 5: like I I go back to defend my prediction.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Two of like my big films.
- 18:36Speaker 5: That I'm doing this year aren't even me hunting. It's
- 18:39Speaker 5: me mentoring other people. So I'm actually like not even
- 18:42Speaker 5: going to be with the trigger for a lot of
- 18:44Speaker 5: the season of parts. So I'm actively handicapping myself, keeping
- 18:48Speaker 5: me from being at the same level as you, Casey.
- 18:50Speaker 5: So I want to make sure I know what you're
- 18:52Speaker 5: thinking in the back of your mind. You're saying that
- 18:54Speaker 5: five six bucks, and you're getting taller and taller and taller.
- 18:58Speaker 5: Uh so I just got to make sure you remember
- 19:00Speaker 5: or that if I weren't mentoring, it'd.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Be right up the six seventh.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I can count those.
- 19:07Speaker 2: So let's let's go with your since you are the
- 19:09Speaker 2: fresh maker, mister minto himself, are you? So if you
- 19:14Speaker 2: count those, let's just say how many bucks are you
- 19:17Speaker 2: going to be at the helm for or the trigger?
- 19:20Speaker 3: My mentor shoot does a lot of times, that's that's true.
- 19:23Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think I think the the
- 19:28Speaker 8: two new hunters I'm with, I think one of the
- 19:29Speaker 8: two will shoot a deer during the early October hunt
- 19:33Speaker 8: I'm doing with them, and then my dad.
- 19:35Speaker 5: I'm guiding my dad basically trying to help him get
- 19:37Speaker 5: a deer at the end of October, and I'm feeling
- 19:39Speaker 5: really good about the stuff we've done to have that
- 19:42Speaker 5: ready for him.
- 19:43Speaker 4: So so yeah, I think.
- 19:44Speaker 5: We'll get two more across that, and then I am
- 19:47Speaker 5: doing actually more mentor hunts in December, and I'm sure
- 19:49Speaker 5: we're gonna kill a dough or two during that thing,
- 19:51Speaker 5: so you know, and.
- 19:52Speaker 4: If we're including does, I'm going to kill at least
- 19:55Speaker 4: two to four dos.
- 19:56Speaker 5: So let's give me my two bucks, my four does,
- 19:59Speaker 5: and my three mentees. So now we're talking nine. So
- 20:02Speaker 5: I'm claiming credit for nine this year.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Let's go to I'm all about it.
- 20:07Speaker 4: So yeah, there we go.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Okay, so guiding your dad, what kind of fee you're
- 20:11Speaker 3: getting for that or is that just uh, that's.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Just like I'll get a better Christmas present maybe this.
- 20:16Speaker 3: Year, probably a fly rod or something.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's the basic good ask.
- 20:22Speaker 3: For I hear the White River fly rods are the
- 20:24Speaker 3: way to go, man. I don't know if you've ever
- 20:26Speaker 3: seen that ticket. Yeah, just check them out.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I will.
- 20:29Speaker 3: It's it's good stuff anyway. This week, so we're going
- 20:32Speaker 3: to talk to you, uh and get some reports from
- 20:35Speaker 3: you throughout the season from different states. So I'm pretty
- 20:37Speaker 3: excited about that because you obviously have a lot of
- 20:39Speaker 3: different things going on this year, and you're gonna see
- 20:42Speaker 3: a lot of deer hunting, a lot of deer, a
- 20:44Speaker 3: lot of deer woods. But this week, uh, in particular,
- 20:47Speaker 3: there's only so many states open. So we've got Alex
- 20:51Speaker 3: comstock from North Dakota. Mark has them from South Carolina,
- 20:55Speaker 3: which is a muggy place to be right now. I'm sure. Uh,
- 20:59Speaker 3: Chad Rye from Tennessee and Reed Struggle from Kentucky a
- 21:02Speaker 3: good buddy of ours. So uh, that's kind of what
- 21:05Speaker 3: we're going to look at this week, and we're gonna
- 21:07Speaker 3: switch it around and get some different reports next week.
- 21:10Speaker 3: You'll be moving pretty quick into different states. So I'm
- 21:14Speaker 3: really looking forward being that I'm not I don't have
- 21:17Speaker 3: an early season or at early September hunt this year
- 21:20Speaker 3: for white tails, and really it's going to be making
- 21:22Speaker 3: me itch, if you know what I.
- 21:23Speaker 5: Mean, I do, You're going to be You're gonna be
- 21:26Speaker 5: struggling these next couple of weeks while you're hearing all
- 21:28Speaker 5: this deer hunside.
- 21:30Speaker 4: I already feel bad that I'm not out.
- 21:31Speaker 5: There for like that September one. I can't imagine having
- 21:33Speaker 5: to wait till the end of the one.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Well, next year, we're taking you, no matter what. It
- 21:39Speaker 3: sounds like a plan. I'm excited.
- 21:40Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, cool, dude.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Well, let's hear the reports from the guys around the
- 21:43Speaker 2: country and Mark, we'll talk to you in a couple
- 21:45Speaker 2: of weeks.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Sounds good.
- 21:48Speaker 2: On the phone, I've got Mark Haslam. He is in
- 21:50Speaker 2: South Carolina. I've been hunting some deer mark what's happening, dude?
- 21:54Speaker 6: Now much just just went through a hurricane. So that's
- 21:59Speaker 6: past and I'm back in the woods trying to get
- 22:01Speaker 6: over some Bucks.
- 22:03Speaker 4: That's cool.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Does that hurricane effect kind of just what goes on
- 22:06Speaker 2: normally there? Like, is that going to change the way
- 22:08Speaker 2: to react?
- 22:10Speaker 4: Well?
- 22:11Speaker 3: What it did was it It pretty.
- 22:13Speaker 6: Much came through all day yesterday and so the day before,
- 22:17Speaker 6: they were the evening before, in the morning of in
- 22:20Speaker 6: the morning after, they were hunker down pretty tight. So
- 22:24Speaker 6: I'm hoping that these next couple of days we've got
- 22:27Speaker 6: some cool attempts that should be out feeding pretty hard.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that's cool. So what have you been doing to Target?
- 22:34Speaker 2: But y'all have a really early season, right, so you've
- 22:35Speaker 2: been hunting for a little while, that's right.
- 22:38Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 6: We opened in the lower half South Carolina August fifteenth,
- 22:42Speaker 6: and this Bucks only, so we have to we legally
- 22:45Speaker 6: have to hart target Bucks this time of year until
- 22:47Speaker 6: September fifteenth. So what I'm doing is either king king
- 22:52Speaker 6: in on destination food sources in the evenings, I'll get
- 22:57Speaker 6: close to them, not on them, but just a little
- 22:59Speaker 6: bit off trying to catch them, trying to cut them
- 23:01Speaker 6: off in the mornings.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I will.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Clam usually right outside of some bedding and trying to
- 23:08Speaker 6: catch them coming back into bed.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Are there any native or natural at least food sources
- 23:14Speaker 3: that you're can in on it all right now?
- 23:18Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 23:18Speaker 6: We we've we've gotten so much rain in the south
- 23:22Speaker 6: this summer that uh, and it's it's still rolling through
- 23:25Speaker 6: with this hurricane. So really, any if someone has any
- 23:30Speaker 6: kind of early successional growth, you know, rag weed, uh, briars,
- 23:36Speaker 6: black bears, any anything like that, just walk through it,
- 23:39Speaker 6: take a look at it and see if it's any
- 23:42Speaker 6: kind of you know, snippers there with any kind of brow. So, yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 6: it's uh, the via right now, they are absolutely hitting ag.
- 23:51Speaker 6: But a lot of our corn is being harvested right now.
- 23:55Speaker 6: So if if if they were going to corny, they're
- 23:59Speaker 6: probably shifting over to peanuts or soybeans like that.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Okay, So, and I'm guessing some of that early successional
- 24:06Speaker 3: growth there's going to be probably betting in those areas too,
- 24:10Speaker 3: some huh, So I would I would suppose since you
- 24:13Speaker 3: said you're hunting mornings near betting, you're kind of you're
- 24:17Speaker 3: kind of catching them maybe browsing before they get back
- 24:20Speaker 3: to bed and then close to bed there are you
- 24:23Speaker 3: able to pretty consistently get in before they're in those
- 24:26Speaker 3: areas in the morning.
- 24:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I'm trying to get in and get
- 24:32Speaker 6: set up, like thirty forty five minutes before first light.
- 24:36Speaker 6: But what I found is that a lot of time
- 24:39Speaker 6: Bucks they will linger a little bit longer rather than
- 24:44Speaker 6: like go groups this time of the year do groups.
- 24:46Speaker 6: So a lot of times be the first back into
- 24:48Speaker 6: bed and bucks will kind of linger around. But if
- 24:51Speaker 6: you have some some thin and open pines or some
- 24:55Speaker 6: timber that's been burned or has some early successional growth,
- 24:59Speaker 6: you've got for them to kind of linger through, you know,
- 25:04Speaker 6: finish up, finish up browsing before they go back to bed.
- 25:08Speaker 6: If you've got some stands that are wide open with
- 25:10Speaker 6: very little and you can just kind of see right
- 25:12Speaker 6: through it, they're gonna be probably starting through those pretty quickly.
- 25:17Speaker 3: It last light, gotcha.
- 25:19Speaker 2: So with the hurricane moving through in Velvet starting to
- 25:22Speaker 2: come off around the country. Uh, on a scale of
- 25:24Speaker 2: one to ten, what do you predict buck movement to
- 25:27Speaker 2: be like over the next week.
- 25:29Speaker 6: I think it's gonna probably remain how it has been
- 25:32Speaker 6: about maybe a six or seven, you know, not really
- 25:35Speaker 6: they're still in that summer yeah, I mean they're still
- 25:38Speaker 6: in that summer pattern of just bedding and eating, and
- 25:42Speaker 6: that's really all they're doing. Every day on my on
- 25:46Speaker 6: my cell cams, I'm getting like a.
- 25:48Speaker 4: New buck every day.
- 25:49Speaker 3: That's us shut us velvet.
- 25:51Speaker 6: So we're probably we're definitely more than half half our
- 25:56Speaker 6: bucks have been shed shed a velvet. So there's still
- 25:59Speaker 6: with some peered up in battler groups, and pretty soon
- 26:04Speaker 6: they're gonna start shifting into that next you know, pre
- 26:06Speaker 6: right phase.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yeah, exciting time of year, man, delvit comes off. You
- 26:10Speaker 2: actually know what you got and I can look forward
- 26:12Speaker 2: to some good days to come.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Mark.
- 26:14Speaker 6: We thanks, thank you for the report, dude, absolutely thanks
- 26:17Speaker 6: for having me on.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 26:19Speaker 3: All right on the phone now, I've got Chad Rice
- 26:22Speaker 3: from Cruiser Saddles. Chad, what's been going on?
- 26:24Speaker 4: Man?
- 26:26Speaker 7: Oh, not a lot, man, Just trying to stay in
- 26:29Speaker 7: some ac and beat this heat in Phennessee right now.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Yeah. See, yeah, it's hot, but you know, ain't Texas
- 26:36Speaker 3: hot or nothing down there. We know what it's like
- 26:39Speaker 3: up there. I mean, it's y'all got that y'all got
- 26:42Speaker 3: that dry heat.
- 26:42Speaker 7: We got that wet steam heat.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I don't know. I feel like we're closer than golfs
- 26:46Speaker 3: than y'all are, but who knows.
- 26:49Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 26:50Speaker 3: The it is dry right now. I can tell you that.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I mean, you can't walk with it kicking up a
- 26:54Speaker 3: dust storm where we're at. We need rain bad, but
- 26:57Speaker 3: I know it. Man. So you've been out hunting a
- 26:59Speaker 3: little bit. You guys have really early season, or at
- 27:02Speaker 3: least it starts pretty early and have a chance to
- 27:05Speaker 3: get velvet. In fact, one of our buddies, Hunter went
- 27:08Speaker 3: up there and made a video with you last year
- 27:10Speaker 3: on a velvet buck. But you've been out doing the thing. Man,
- 27:13Speaker 3: What have you been keen on on what you've been seeing?
- 27:17Speaker 7: Yeah? Man, So Tennessee's got an early velvet seasons just
- 27:20Speaker 7: three days long there. It was last weekend and unfortunately
- 27:26Speaker 7: we had a heat wave and the average temp all
- 27:31Speaker 7: weekend was probably like between ninety five.
- 27:34Speaker 3: And one hundred degrees. So that's hot.
- 27:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean we hunted. Me and the guys in
- 27:41Speaker 7: the shop there. We hunted all weekend and not much
- 27:45Speaker 7: to speak for. It was just, you know, super hot.
- 27:48Speaker 7: We were having deer on camera the week before and
- 27:52Speaker 7: then this heat wave came.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Through and pretty much shut them down.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Man, So were they still showing because you've been sending
- 27:57Speaker 3: me those pictures. Have they been showing up like after
- 28:00Speaker 3: dark now or did they just change their patterns or
- 28:02Speaker 3: what do you think?
- 28:04Speaker 7: You know, I feel like they just changed their patterns.
- 28:07Speaker 3: You know, where we were.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Hunting them at and where we're getting them on camera
- 28:10Speaker 7: was on top of these ridges and stuff, and there's
- 28:14Speaker 7: not much water up here, and we're pretty close to
- 28:17Speaker 7: the lake where we're hunting. So I feel like they
- 28:20Speaker 7: dropped down in these cool draws and kind of hung
- 28:24Speaker 7: out by some water.
- 28:25Speaker 2: So if you were gonna so target Bucks like right now,
- 28:30Speaker 2: would you still say like water is the key?
- 28:34Speaker 3: I would say water is a big factor right now.
- 28:37Speaker 3: For sure. It is.
- 28:40Speaker 7: Like I said, it's super hot, it's cool to off
- 28:42Speaker 7: since last weekend, but it's still average like eighty five
- 28:46Speaker 7: to ninety degree days.
- 28:48Speaker 3: So water I think is a big factor right now. Yeah,
- 28:52Speaker 3: So what do you think.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Buck movement looks like going forward for like the next
- 28:56Speaker 2: week and we're looking at still more of that just
- 28:58Speaker 2: you know, not time movement waiting on some cooler camps.
- 29:02Speaker 7: Yeah, man, from what I'm seeing on camera, we're getting
- 29:05Speaker 7: a lot of nocturnal movement, a lot of bucks moving
- 29:08Speaker 7: that night. And you know, we don't we can't hunt
- 29:12Speaker 7: again until the end of September. But you know, if
- 29:16Speaker 7: you're in Kentucky or anywhere else that opens early, I
- 29:20Speaker 7: would I would definitely say water, try to try to
- 29:23Speaker 7: maybe get close to bedding, and.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's your best bet.
- 29:29Speaker 2: I think right now, what do you think the movement
- 29:31Speaker 2: is on a scale of one to ten for bucks.
- 29:35Speaker 7: M probably probably around a five, I would say, I wouldn't.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I would say it's.
- 29:42Speaker 7: Even lower during the day, maybe early morning hours, late evening.
- 29:46Speaker 7: They're still gonna move a little bit. But uh, you know,
- 29:50Speaker 7: like I said, movement on our cameras has been it's
- 29:54Speaker 7: definitely slowed down quite a bit.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you a good cold front this time
- 29:59Speaker 3: of year and do a lot, But if you don't
- 30:01Speaker 3: get that, man, it's uh, it can be a tough
- 30:03Speaker 3: time of year, you know, so absolutely, you know, depending
- 30:06Speaker 3: on where you're at in the country and what hurricanes
- 30:08Speaker 3: are happening or whatever else. That's kind of the main
- 30:11Speaker 3: the main thing that can adjust your climate. And make
- 30:14Speaker 3: for a better hunt. So, uh, Chad, I appreciate your friendship.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I appreciate you doing this with us this week, and
- 30:21Speaker 3: hopefully we'll get you back on when the rut is
- 30:24Speaker 3: kicking or something like that.
- 30:25Speaker 7: Again, absolutely, boys, I appreciate it as always.
- 30:43Speaker 3: All right, now on the phone, I've got Red Struggle.
- 30:45Speaker 3: He's been out in Kentucky doing a little hunting public land.
- 30:47Speaker 3: Got some private land stuff going to I guess in
- 30:50Speaker 3: the area. Man, what has been going on?
- 30:53Speaker 9: How's it going, y'all? It's uh, it's hot, it's hot,
- 30:56Speaker 9: and uh, we're waiting on we're waiting on a card fronts.
- 31:00Speaker 9: That warm weather from down south has made it up somewhere.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been slipping around. Wait, we've been sending it
- 31:05Speaker 3: y'all's way all summer. I don't know why it hasn't left,
- 31:07Speaker 3: but you know, maybe it's just like you know, it's
- 31:10Speaker 3: like a fire man. You know. Once the hotter it gets,
- 31:13Speaker 3: the more you can feel it from distance, you know.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So that's what you are getting right now as from Yeah,
- 31:21Speaker 3: so you've you did some hunting this weekend in Kentucky? Man,
- 31:24Speaker 3: what was it like?
- 31:26Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yes?
- 31:26Speaker 9: Or so the opener partnered up with a buddy. We
- 31:30Speaker 9: decided for some reason to go a mile in on
- 31:33Speaker 9: public into a semi new area. We knew it from
- 31:36Speaker 9: turkey hunting, but uh, didn't have much luck. It's it's
- 31:41Speaker 9: it's been warm. So opener was on Saturday. Thursday, we
- 31:46Speaker 9: had a south wind roll in bringing warm weather. The
- 31:51Speaker 9: wind switched to an east Friday, which would have been
- 31:54Speaker 9: awesome to hunt, but Saturday it was hot south when
- 32:01Speaker 9: not much going on, real humid, you know, high of
- 32:04Speaker 9: in the mid eighties that day. Low in this you know,
- 32:07Speaker 9: mid sixties in the morning, which was nice, but it
- 32:09Speaker 9: wound up quick, so had no luck there and had deer.
- 32:14Speaker 9: We blew one out early. You know, this time of
- 32:16Speaker 9: year is so.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Tough on that morning hunt. So that's uh, it's.
- 32:20Speaker 9: Kind of what we ran into on the public.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Yeah, so what are you actually targeting? You you trying to
- 32:25Speaker 2: go in and find some food sources or are you
- 32:26Speaker 2: going to bed in areas?
- 32:27Speaker 3: Like why'd you go that far into the woods?
- 32:29Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 32:30Speaker 9: So the goal was actually on that area to get
- 32:33Speaker 9: close to private. There's a couple of ridgetops up there
- 32:37Speaker 9: and we had water just basically on the other side
- 32:41Speaker 9: of the ridge from us. So we're trying to get
- 32:43Speaker 9: them gone from the private seat. Hit some ag, hit
- 32:47Speaker 9: that water source, go to bed, and I think we
- 32:51Speaker 9: kind of bumped some out getting in there early because
- 32:54Speaker 9: that one frock came came in. But they're on the
- 32:58Speaker 9: acorn started dropping. They're not raining yet.
- 33:01Speaker 10: I haven't found any you know hot real hot oaks,
- 33:05Speaker 10: one of those Warren Womac you know feed trees, but
- 33:09Speaker 10: we are looking for them because that's there.
- 33:12Speaker 4: They're going to be on those acuns.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Here for sure. So you know, you as far as
- 33:18Speaker 3: like what your the patterns you're hunting right now and
- 33:21Speaker 3: what you're going to be going in hunting the future.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Is there going to be a change here like in
- 33:25Speaker 3: the next week as to what you're gonna be hunting
- 33:28Speaker 3: over or is it the same? Yeah?
- 33:30Speaker 9: So similar On the private, things change a little bit.
- 33:34Speaker 9: We are allowed to have the mineral sites and feed
- 33:37Speaker 9: in Kentucky, So on my private I've got some feed
- 33:41Speaker 9: out and uh on my cameras. When we have those
- 33:45Speaker 9: north wind days, I've got my cameras lighting up quite
- 33:49Speaker 9: a bit. I actually went in hunted the haunted the
- 33:52Speaker 9: private the next day on a hard south wind and it.
- 33:58Speaker 3: It was tough.
- 33:58Speaker 9: It ended up kind of being the slack wind. There
- 34:01Speaker 9: was not much going on at all. Thermals were all.
- 34:05Speaker 9: It was just swirly.
- 34:06Speaker 4: It was no good.
- 34:07Speaker 9: You know, I saw a young bachelor group on the
- 34:12Speaker 9: way out. You know, they're still hanging around. But I've
- 34:14Speaker 9: got some deer and hardhorn already on camera, have some
- 34:18Speaker 9: in velvet. It seems the more mature bucks are starting
- 34:20Speaker 9: to split out of their bachelor groups. But my target
- 34:23Speaker 9: going forward is still gonna be based around ag and
- 34:27Speaker 9: trying to find a hot feed tree, because that's you know,
- 34:31Speaker 9: I think where those mature bucks are gonna be.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, man, that's sounds like an encouraging week coming up.
- 34:38Speaker 3: So that's good.
- 34:39Speaker 2: If you had to predict the buck movement on a
- 34:43Speaker 2: scale of one to ten for the upcoming week, what
- 34:45Speaker 2: would you give it.
- 34:47Speaker 9: Yeah, So Wednesday, I've got a nice thunderstorm afternoon coming.
- 34:52Speaker 9: It's gonna switch to a north wind. We're dropping down
- 34:55Speaker 9: into degrees. It's gonna get down to the seventies. We've
- 34:58Speaker 9: got some knots in the fifties coming up this weekend,
- 35:00Speaker 9: big north wind. So I think this upcoming weekend is
- 35:05Speaker 9: going to be killer Friday, Saturday, Sunday is gonna be
- 35:08Speaker 9: really good. I would say movement wise, it's gonna be
- 35:13Speaker 9: you know, probably like a six or seven. Just because
- 35:16Speaker 9: of that switch we're going from the south wind hot
- 35:19Speaker 9: it's gonna change. I think, really it's gonna be pretty good.
- 35:23Speaker 9: I got a high hope for this weekend.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, Man, September cold fronts can be deadly. Man.
- 35:29Speaker 3: I think I've seen in the past where you know,
- 35:31Speaker 3: people have really done well on those things. So that's
- 35:34Speaker 3: that's a hopeful and optimistic prediction there, man. And I'm
- 35:38Speaker 3: very glad that you, uh you gave it to us.
- 35:41Speaker 3: I appreciate your time today read and uh, I hope
- 35:44Speaker 3: you have a killer week next week, man, of course.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Appreciate y'all. Hopefully we'll get one on the get one
- 35:49Speaker 9: on the ground. I'm trying to kill my first year
- 35:51Speaker 9: with a traditional bow, all right, So we're we're we're
- 35:54Speaker 9: getting after any of them. They all better duck fast,
- 35:57Speaker 9: you know.
- 35:57Speaker 7: But we are, we are.
- 36:00Speaker 3: It should be good, so I appreciate it. Good providence,
- 36:02Speaker 3: young man. All right on the phone, now, I've got
- 36:05Speaker 3: Alex Comstock from Whitetail DNA. What's going on, man, how
- 36:10Speaker 3: much are you guys doing? Doing pretty good? It's a
- 36:13Speaker 3: it's a fairly cool day here. It might even be
- 36:15Speaker 3: hotter where you're at than it is here in Texas.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Today we've got some rain and a cool a little
- 36:19Speaker 3: cool front. So ninety three here, what are you looking at?
- 36:22Speaker 11: Oh you might have us beat today. We're at eighty
- 36:25Speaker 11: eight right now. But it's cooler today than it's been
- 36:27Speaker 11: the last handful of days.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, well that's cool man. So with h with
- 36:33Speaker 3: the last few days being hot and then now a
- 36:36Speaker 3: colder day, what's what's the movement been like? Yeah, so
- 36:39Speaker 3: far it's been pretty bad.
- 36:41Speaker 5: I'd give it.
- 36:42Speaker 11: I don't know, like a's three out of ten, it's
- 36:46Speaker 11: been h. We've had quite a few guys in camp,
- 36:48Speaker 11: so you've been able to cover quite a few different areas,
- 36:51Speaker 11: and we're spread out from probably the furthest furthert people
- 36:56Speaker 11: away from each other, probably an hour and a half away,
- 36:58Speaker 11: Like we're covering ground. But we had one guy killed
- 37:02Speaker 11: last night, two people shot bucks, So I mean starting
- 37:04Speaker 11: to pick up a little bit.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Which is nice.
- 37:06Speaker 3: That's cool man.
- 37:07Speaker 2: So if you're hunting early season top patterns, does the
- 37:11Speaker 2: heat almost increase the efficiency on that, or would you
- 37:15Speaker 2: like to see the cooler weather come in.
- 37:18Speaker 11: I mean, there's probably no world in which I prefer
- 37:20Speaker 11: one hundred degree temps. Yeah, I've taken the cooler temps
- 37:26Speaker 11: every day of the week. I mean, you know, it's funny.
- 37:28Speaker 11: Last year out here opening week, we had a huge
- 37:31Speaker 11: cold snap right at the beginning of season, and I
- 37:34Speaker 11: think it actually the movement kind of shut off. And
- 37:37Speaker 11: then this year we had a huge heat wave, and
- 37:40Speaker 11: I just wanted it to be consistent temperatures to keep
- 37:42Speaker 11: these bucks on their patterns. But I just can't seem
- 37:45Speaker 11: to catch your break with the weather, I guess.
- 37:47Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 37:48Speaker 3: So, do you have anything that you feel like is
- 37:50Speaker 3: kind of patterned right now?
- 37:53Speaker 9: You know, I've got one buck.
- 37:54Speaker 11: I mean, there's a couple bucks that we've got daylighting
- 37:58Speaker 11: every so often. The one buck probably a three or
- 38:02Speaker 11: four year old ten pointer that's daylighted three of the
- 38:05Speaker 11: last four nights in the last hour, and so he's
- 38:09Speaker 11: also been there a bunch in the middle of the night.
- 38:11Speaker 11: And so I'm hoping with the cold front that's upcoming
- 38:15Speaker 11: in the next couple of days here that he shows
- 38:17Speaker 11: up and I can can lays an arrow throw them.
- 38:20Speaker 3: What kind of pattern is he on?
- 38:22Speaker 11: So he's coming out of a standing cornfield into the
- 38:26Speaker 11: edge of a of a bean field.
- 38:27Speaker 4: With some oaks around, dropping a corns pretty much.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Oh that sounds picturesque, that does, man? That's that standing
- 38:34Speaker 3: corn is always tricky for me. Man, I don't. I
- 38:36Speaker 3: don't love being around it much because you have deer
- 38:39Speaker 3: that'll bet in it, and you have deer that'll feed
- 38:41Speaker 3: in it, and if there's a pivot there, they water
- 38:43Speaker 3: in it. So it can get real tricky sometimes to
- 38:45Speaker 3: figure out the movement patterns. You know, it's tough.
- 38:48Speaker 11: I mean, I had a one of my top shooters
- 38:50Speaker 11: after the other day and it's right along the edge
- 38:53Speaker 11: of a standing cornfield, and I had one deer I
- 38:56Speaker 11: could just hear slowly moving through the corn and I
- 38:58Speaker 11: just had that gut feeling of this, but never got
- 39:00Speaker 11: to see what deer was, never shown himself.
- 39:02Speaker 4: That hurts.
- 39:03Speaker 2: So when you're in North Dakota, the days are pretty
- 39:07Speaker 2: long still this time of year. What time do you
- 39:09Speaker 2: have to leave your stand to go play a complete eighteen?
- 39:11Speaker 2: And then what time do you have to be back
- 39:13Speaker 2: in your stand for the evening?
- 39:15Speaker 3: Hunt? Well, we only did nine. Oh gotcha. There was
- 39:20Speaker 3: a little bit of seriousness that question.
- 39:21Speaker 2: It's kind of funny that you're getting some golf, and
- 39:23Speaker 2: I appreciate that, but you know, in all seriousness, like
- 39:28Speaker 2: you don't want to go to the stand and just
- 39:29Speaker 2: sweat your tail off all day. What time are you
- 39:31Speaker 2: getting in there for an evening hunt?
- 39:33Speaker 11: Yeah, we're not, like we're gonna leave today maybe four
- 39:36Speaker 11: four thirty. By the time we're in and setting ready
- 39:38Speaker 11: to rock, it's about five thirty and sunsets at like
- 39:41Speaker 11: eight fifteen. So it so we're getting I mean, most
- 39:45Speaker 11: of these deer, if they're hitting on camera in daylight,
- 39:48Speaker 11: it's typically in the last I mean, shoot fifteen to
- 39:51Speaker 11: twenty minutes.
- 39:53Speaker 3: We really don't have I mean.
- 39:54Speaker 11: But in contrary, you know which kind of contradictions what
- 39:57Speaker 11: I'm saying, both guys at shot Bucks last night killed
- 40:00Speaker 11: or shot Bucks at like seven and seven fifteen, so
- 40:03Speaker 11: a full hour before sunset.
- 40:07Speaker 3: So going forward with the weather change that just happened
- 40:11Speaker 3: or any other factors you may have, or are you
- 40:13Speaker 3: gonna focus on the same same patterns that have been
- 40:17Speaker 3: you've been seeing on cameras or in you're scouting or
- 40:20Speaker 3: are you gonna change things up.
- 40:22Speaker 11: We're gonna stick with it and just essentially hope that
- 40:25Speaker 11: uh this you know we're going from. It was one
- 40:27Speaker 11: hundred and like two yesterday, whereas tomorrow the highs I
- 40:30Speaker 11: think sixty four. So we're just gonna hope that that
- 40:33Speaker 11: gets those deer up moving a little bit earlier and
- 40:37Speaker 11: kind of hunt the scene patterns essentially.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Well that with that being said, if you're gonna rate
- 40:42Speaker 2: the Butt movie going forward this week from a scale
- 40:44Speaker 2: of one to ten, what would it be.
- 40:47Speaker 3: I'm gonna give her.
- 40:48Speaker 9: I'm gonna give her a six.
- 40:50Speaker 11: I'm gonna I'm trying to get I'm trying to get
- 40:52Speaker 11: over a five, and uh if it's a six, I'm
- 40:56Speaker 11: gonna be a happy campus.
- 40:57Speaker 4: Put it that way.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Nice dude.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Well, hey, I know that you have a lot of
- 41:00Speaker 2: history up there in North Dakota and you kind of
- 41:01Speaker 2: got it figured out. So I'm rooting for you. I
- 41:03Speaker 2: hope you have a really good hunt this evening. Man, Hey,
- 41:06Speaker 2: appreciate it. Hopefully I'm hoping the same thing.
