- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, The
- 0:08Shape, SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink,
- 0:13and I'm your host, Will Walden. So SpaceX had a recent Starship
- 0:18System test and it marks an important, albeit very complex
- 0:23point in its development journey.
- 0:25Despite the loss of the Super Heavy booster and the Starship
- 0:28spacecraft during the IFT 2 flight, SpaceX remains
- 0:32optimistic, viewing the event as a valuable learning opportunity
- 0:35for advancing its multi planetary ambitions.
- 0:38Now SpaceX in a statement emphasizes the significance of
- 0:41the test for gaining crucial data to enhance starships
- 0:44reliability. This incident underscores the
- 0:47challenges of SpaceX faces and perfecting the technology needed
- 0:50for future space missions, including colonization of other
- 0:54planets like Mars and beyond. Now the Starship system is not
- 0:58only a key player in Spacex's grand vision for space travel,
- 1:01but also a critical component in NASA's Artemis program.
- 1:04This program aims to return US astronauts to the moon, a feat
- 1:08not achieved in over 50 years or five decades.
- 1:11And this one's different. They're going to establish
- 1:14permanent lunar outpost, the Artemis 3 mission scheduled for
- 1:19late 2025 but possibly being pushed on even further Plans to
- 1:23utilize the Starship spacecraft and the recent test flight
- 1:26failure has raised concerns about meeting this deadline,
- 1:30although the NASA officials maintained an optimistic
- 1:32outlook, valuing the lessons learned from each one of these
- 1:36tests. IFT 1, IFT 2 and soon, probably
- 1:39February of 2024 IFT 3. Let's go back to the second test
- 1:44flight of the Starship. The system demonstrated
- 1:47significant improvements over its first attempt.
- 1:49The successful ignition of all 33 engine and the survival of
- 1:54the launchpad against immense thrust are notable achievements.
- 1:57However, this mission also faced critical failures that hindered
- 2:00its full execution. Now the Super heavy booster is
- 2:03unexpected explosion after detaching from the Starship and
- 2:06the subsequent loss of signal from the Starship capsule
- 2:09highlight key areas for improvement.
- 2:11These events prevented SpaceX from testing vital landing and
- 2:15reusability maneuvers. Now Elon Musk, the SpaceX CEO,
- 2:19has acknowledged the complexity of ensuring safe re entry and
- 2:23landing for the Starship. This aspect remains one of the
- 2:26most challenging hurdles in the vehicle's development.
- 2:29Reusability is a cornerstone of all of Spacex's strategy, but
- 2:34essentially the Starship system needs this in order to complete
- 2:38the goal to get to the lunar surface.
- 2:41Now successfully recovering and reusing both the Starship
- 2:44spacecraft and the Super Heavy booster is crucial for frequent
- 2:47and cost effective lunar missions.
- 2:49The orbital refueling of Starship is also a critical step
- 2:52for lunar missions. Given the immense fuel
- 2:55consumption during loss, over a dozen tanker missions may be
- 2:59required to refuel a single Starship for its lunar journey.
- 3:02Just recently, in a talk with NASA, a SpaceX representative
- 3:07said it would take about 10 refuels for the Starship and the
- 3:10lunar mission. Now, achieving a moon landing
- 3:13with Starship involves multiple development milestones,
- 3:16including hundreds of satellite missions, tanker version
- 3:19testing, and an uncrewed lunar landing.
- 3:22Spacex's approach to edit this out, Spacex's approach to
- 3:27development embraces the risk of explosive failures as a path to
- 3:31rapid learning and also improvement of the Starship
- 3:33system. Comparatively, NASA's
- 3:36traditional development approach, characterized by
- 3:38extensive ground testing, contrasts with Spacex's more
- 3:42experimental and cost effective method.
- 3:45The difference in approach reflects the varying priorities
- 3:48and methodologies of government and now private sector space
- 3:51exploration with SpaceX. Now, when the broader context of
- 3:54lunar Landers, SpaceX Starship competes with Blue Origins Blue
- 3:59Moon, another contender for future Artemis missions, each
- 4:02company faces unique challenges in the respective designs and
- 4:06strategies for Moon landings. Now, the current initiatives to
- 4:10send humans back to the Moon through programs like Artemis
- 4:13mark a shift from NASA's historic Apollo missions.
- 4:17Unlike Apollo, which was primarily focused on achieving
- 4:19the first lunar landing and established American dominance
- 4:22in space during the Cold War, the Artemis program aims for a
- 4:26sustainable and long term presence on the Moon.
- 4:29This new era in lunar exploration is not about
- 4:32repeating the past. What about laying the new
- 4:34groundwork for future space endeavors, including potential
- 4:37missions to Mars? And a key difference between the
- 4:40Apollo program and current lunar missions is the emphasis on
- 4:43sustainability and also reusability in space travel.
- 4:47While Apollo missions were essentially one off ventures,
- 4:50the Artemis program, with the help of technologies like
- 4:53Spacex's Starship, seeks to establish a continuous human
- 4:56presence on the Moon. This approach involves
- 4:59developing infrastructure for repeated trips, permanent lunar
- 5:02bases, and technologies that can be adapted for future Mars
- 5:05missions, representing a significant advancement from the
- 5:08Apollo era. Apollo basically sent humans to
- 5:12the moon and brought them back to Earth.
- 5:14We're going to set up an infrastructure for future
- 5:17generations with the Artemis program, and the Artemis
- 5:20missions also differ in their collaborative nature.
- 5:23The Apollo program was a largely national effort, driven by the
- 5:27geopolitical context of the 1960s, the Cold War, and in
- 5:31contrast, Artemis is more international and commercial,
- 5:34involving partnerships with various countries and also
- 5:36various private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
- 5:40This collaborative approach not only spreads the financial
- 5:43burden, but also brings together a diverse range of expertise in
- 5:46technology, making the mission more robust and inclusive.
- 5:51The technological advancement since the Apollo era also play a
- 5:54critical role in shaping the Artemis missions.
- 5:57Today's spacecraft, lunar Landers, and other space
- 5:59technologies benefit from decades of innovation in
- 6:02material science, computing, and engineering.
- 6:05These advancements enable more ambitious missions, such as
- 6:08establishing a permanent base on the Moon and eventually sending
- 6:11humans to Mars, which were beyond the scope of the Apollo
- 6:14program. The Artemis missions therefore
- 6:16stand as an important milestone in the ongoing evolution of
- 6:20space exploration. Now, looking ahead, SpaceX plans
- 6:23to ready the Starship system for another test flight within
- 6:26weeks, Should be about mid January, late January.
- 6:30For this, however, the timeline is uncertain given the need for
- 6:33a thorough analysis of the recent test data and regulatory
- 6:37approvals from the FAA and the FA.
- 6:39Involvement in investigating the recent test flight and its role
- 6:42in approving future launches adds another layer of complexity
- 6:46to Spacex's timeline. The duration of these regulatory
- 6:49processes remains unclear. SpaceX is hoping to get FAA
- 6:54clearance by February. Spacex's recent Starship test
- 6:57represents a significant but mixed step in the journey
- 7:00towards advanced space exploration.
