- 0:11I was born to kill it.
- 0:12I was meant to win.
- 0:14I am down and willing,
- 0:15so I will find a way.
- 0:16It took a minute,
- 0:17now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:19When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:20you decide to stay.
- 0:21That's how it winters made.
- 0:22Stick a fork in the heater
- 0:24on my dinner plate.
- 0:25I walk into the fire like it's
- 0:32What is going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:35My name is Scott Schweitzer.
- 0:36I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:38We're here to celebrate and
- 0:40highlight the athletes of
- 0:41the 2024 Legends Masters CrossFit Games.
- 0:46And I'm so honored and
- 0:47privileged to have with me five-time,
- 0:49now six-time CrossFit Games athlete,
- 0:53Kenzie Riley.
- 0:54What's going on, Kenzie?
- 0:56Hey, your average Thursday night.
- 1:00There you go.
- 1:00Me hiding in the garage
- 1:02trying to do a phone call.
- 1:04There you are.
- 1:07So when we were messaging back and forth,
- 1:10you asked if our paths had crossed.
- 1:12And I'm going to tell my
- 1:13embarrassing story that
- 1:15makes me look really, really bad.
- 1:18So we were both at the games.
- 1:22I want to say it was 2022.
- 1:222022, I think.
- 1:23Okay.
- 1:23Yeah.
- 1:28You were there pushing a stroller.
- 1:30I ran up behind you and I
- 1:35thought you were Jen dancer.
- 1:37Yes.
- 1:39Yes.
- 1:41And I felt like this tall
- 1:44when you turned around and
- 1:46I realized you are not Jen dancer.
- 1:48You are in fact, Kenzie Riley.
- 1:50Well, if it makes you feel any better,
- 1:53you're not the only person
- 1:54to ever get that confused.
- 1:56Apparently we are.
- 1:58look like and but I don't
- 2:01know there's something that
- 2:03gives the same vibe
- 2:04apparently so I've not
- 2:05gotten that um that only
- 2:07time so well I had her and
- 2:09sam on the show just right
- 2:10before that talking about
- 2:12motherhood and having the
- 2:15baby and um and so like all
- 2:18that the stroller
- 2:19everything clicked in I was
- 2:20like oh it's got to be jen
- 2:22and then I get there and
- 2:23boom nope it was kenzie
- 2:24No, I do remember that, but like I said,
- 2:28I've had that happen to me a couple times,
- 2:30so whatever.
- 2:32And you know what?
- 2:33I know Jen, and we're cool, and I like her,
- 2:36and she's awesome,
- 2:37so I could think of worse
- 2:38people to be confused for, so...
- 2:41you're, you're both incredible athletes.
- 2:42What an honor.
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:45Um,
- 2:46so you are the first athlete I've had
- 2:49on this week that has been
- 2:51to the games before
- 2:52everybody else I've had on
- 2:54is going as a rookie.
- 2:56Oh, can,
- 2:58what advice would you give to the
- 3:00rookies going to the
- 3:02CrossFit games for the first time?
- 3:04Oh, geez.
- 3:06Well, it kind of depends on,
- 3:07I think what stage of life you're in.
- 3:09Um,
- 3:10For me going as a rookie when I was,
- 3:12oh my gosh, I was like 29.
- 3:13I was almost 30 my very first year.
- 3:18And being in a completely
- 3:19different part of my life with, you know,
- 3:23less obligations and more
- 3:24time to just focus on training.
- 3:25So I think it depends on how
- 3:26big of a part CrossFit
- 3:28plays in your life and how
- 3:30big piece of the pie it gets.
- 3:34but it's really easy to just
- 3:35get overwhelmed and sucked up.
- 3:36And I, this is me talking to myself,
- 3:38not to other people, but like to enjoy,
- 3:40like everyone says, Oh, enjoy it.
- 3:42But like, but like actually enjoy it.
- 3:44And remember like,
- 3:45it's just working out and
- 3:48putting so much like
- 3:48pressure on yourself and
- 3:50like being so worried about
- 3:53things really robs you of the,
- 3:57the fun that we like, we're,
- 3:58we're supposed to enjoy this.
- 3:59Like,
- 3:59that's what I always have to remind
- 4:00myself instead of, you know,
- 4:03feeling like, oh gosh,
- 4:05I have to warm up again.
- 4:07Oh gosh, another event.
- 4:08Is this over yet?
- 4:09Like inevitably that's the
- 4:10attitude kind of,
- 4:11I think once you get into the weekend,
- 4:13but just remember like, damn,
- 4:15this is awesome.
- 4:15And like,
- 4:16I get to do this and I like to do
- 4:18this and it's just working out.
- 4:19I do this all the time.
- 4:20I do this every day.
- 4:22Let's go have some fun with this.
- 4:23Cause yeah,
- 4:26it can easily get turned into
- 4:27something that's not supposed to be.
- 4:29Don't take it too seriously,
- 4:30I guess is what I'm saying.
- 4:32have you done any masters
- 4:34competitions or is this your first one?
- 4:36I think technically it's my first one.
- 4:40Well, I don't know.
- 4:42I competed with me,
- 4:45Elijah Muhammad and I did a,
- 4:48a team competition.
- 4:49And I don't know if we're in
- 4:51the masters division or the open division,
- 4:53but we're both masters athletes.
- 4:54So
- 4:55I think it must've just been
- 4:56regular division.
- 4:58No,
- 4:58I haven't really messed too much with
- 5:00masters.
- 5:01Cause I've ever since I've
- 5:02been master's age,
- 5:03I've either been pregnant
- 5:04or too close postpartum to
- 5:07really like can compete at
- 5:09least in like a game, the game season.
- 5:12So I'm just trying to think
- 5:12on like a local level,
- 5:14which I don't get too many
- 5:15opportunities with that.
- 5:16So I don't know.
- 5:17Wait, yes, I did crash crucible,
- 5:21which is like a competition down here,
- 5:24which J.R.
- 5:24Howell and like,
- 5:26they're friends with like Hiller and Sevan,
- 5:28like anybody who watches that podcast, um,
- 5:30might be familiar with him, but his gym,
- 5:32like Jason Hopper, I didn't believe,
- 5:34believe trains out of,
- 5:36it's just a couple hours from me.
- 5:38Um, and they do a great competition.
- 5:40So I did that in like
- 5:40October in the master's division.
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:43My Sunday night co-host, uh,
- 5:45competed against you, Jamie.
- 5:47Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally.
- 5:49Yep.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:51And so we watched the stream
- 5:52the whole weekend, uh, and did,
- 5:55did little wrap up shows from it, uh,
- 5:56just because, and it was so good.
- 5:59Quite a show.
- 6:00Oh yeah.
- 6:01It was, it was a great competition.
- 6:03Um, he's great.
- 6:04So any,
- 6:05any opportunity anybody has to go compete,
- 6:07uh,
- 6:08he has does like one or two events a
- 6:09year.
- 6:09It's definitely highly recommend.
- 6:12So you're in North Carolina.
- 6:15What part?
- 6:16I'm in Charlotte in.
- 6:17Yep.
- 6:18Yep.
- 6:19Charlotte proper.
- 6:21My wife has a lot of family there.
- 6:23So we've,
- 6:23we've been there for family reunions,
- 6:25different things like that.
- 6:26So I'm very familiar with
- 6:28the Charlotte area.
- 6:29Oh, that's cool.
- 6:30I don't hear that too often.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:34It's a nice, it's, it's a nice place.
- 6:36I don't think it's,
- 6:38but I'm not like from here.
- 6:40I've only lived here like
- 6:41seven years going on eight years,
- 6:44which is kind of a long time.
- 6:46But I'm from the Midwest.
- 6:48I'm from Illinois.
- 6:49Okay.
- 6:50Born and raised.
- 6:51So this is just a venture we
- 6:53went on to kind of do
- 6:55something different besides
- 6:56live in Illinois our whole lives.
- 6:57Yeah, I'm in Columbus, Ohio.
- 6:59Oh, yeah.
- 7:01So midwest myself.
- 7:03Yeah.
- 7:03And I love them.
- 7:04I mean, we go back and I'm always like, oh,
- 7:06I kind of miss it,
- 7:07but I don't really miss the winters.
- 7:10And, you know, I wanted to just do like,
- 7:14we were just like, dude,
- 7:15let's not live here forever, you know?
- 7:17So who knows what the future will hold,
- 7:18but we're here and we like
- 7:19it and we're not going
- 7:21anywhere anytime soon,
- 7:22but we're not like born Southern.
- 7:24We're not Southerners, you know,
- 7:25it's not like in us, but it's, you know,
- 7:29we like to pretend we are sometimes.
- 7:30I moved to Northern Florida
- 7:32for four years and I couldn't,
- 7:34I couldn't deal with the Southern way.
- 7:35Like it,
- 7:38it's just much slower than I'm
- 7:40accustomed to.
- 7:40And if you like it and that's your,
- 7:43your style, good for you.
- 7:44I just couldn't live in that
- 7:46style very long.
- 7:47And honestly though,
- 7:49I was thinking about this earlier.
- 7:50I'm like, dude, I'm not like,
- 7:52I'm not Southern in my core.
- 7:53Um,
- 7:55But my kids are going to be
- 7:58born and raised Carolina kids.
- 8:01And I'm just like,
- 8:02is my kid going to have an accent?
- 8:04Is he going to have the
- 8:05mountains and the beach in his heart?
- 8:07Because I've got cornfields
- 8:09in my heart because that's
- 8:10what I grew up around.
- 8:11And so I'm like,
- 8:12I wonder if he'll resonate with this.
- 8:13Even though we don't have those roots,
- 8:16is he going to have those roots?
- 8:17So I'm curious to see if
- 8:18they're going to be like
- 8:19true Carolinian children.
- 8:22So what was your background
- 8:25that got you into this CrossFit world?
- 8:27So I was a swimmer the
- 8:31majority of my childhood, like 15 years.
- 8:33I swam for a couple of years in college,
- 8:36super burnout by that point in time.
- 8:39And I don't know.
- 8:42That's my background.
- 8:44Oh, yeah.
- 8:46I made it two months into my
- 8:48freshman year.
- 8:49Exactly.
- 8:50Yeah, I did it because I was like,
- 8:53this is what I do.
- 8:54But I like hated it so much.
- 8:55I was so over it.
- 8:57I didn't know what I didn't.
- 8:58That was my problem,
- 8:59as I didn't know what to do
- 9:00if I didn't do it.
- 9:01I was like, this is who I am.
- 9:02This is what I do.
- 9:04Which is now my problem with CrossFit.
- 9:06But it becomes just, like, yeah, a part of,
- 9:10like, your identity, kind of.
- 9:12So, yeah, I had that, like, aerobic base.
- 9:14So coming into CrossFit,
- 9:16I was 25 when I walked in
- 9:17my first CrossFit gym.
- 9:18Like, I was super late to the game.
- 9:21So, yeah,
- 9:22I spent about five years in
- 9:23between swimming and CrossFit where I,
- 9:25like...
- 9:26did a lot of gym workouts, group exercise,
- 9:30marathon, like half marathoning,
- 9:32just thinking I was really
- 9:34fit because I just like did
- 9:35a whole bunch of gym rat shit.
- 9:37But I was never like training.
- 9:38I'd never like lifted heavy,
- 9:40touched a barbell, done a full depth,
- 9:43like back squat, like with any weight.
- 9:45Like I didn't,
- 9:47like I didn't like know any
- 9:48of that stuff.
- 9:49But when I came into CrossFit,
- 9:50I was like aerobic base.
- 9:52That was not the problem.
- 9:53Coordination,
- 9:55Like, I'm a pretty, like,
- 9:56just naturally coordinated kind of human,
- 9:58like, body awareness and coordination,
- 9:59like, rhythm.
- 10:01Like, okay, so Olympic lifting, I could,
- 10:02like, pick that up a little bit.
- 10:04And some things just clicked.
- 10:07But I was just, yeah, I don't know.
- 10:10One of my old swim teammates
- 10:12was the one that told me to try it.
- 10:14And then my cousin actually
- 10:16was into it too.
- 10:17So I just kept hearing about it.
- 10:18And I was like,
- 10:20I don't even know where you
- 10:21go to do this.
- 10:22You have to like, I Googled it up,
- 10:23like CrossFit gym.
- 10:24Like, is this a place you go?
- 10:25Like,
- 10:26I didn't really understand the
- 10:26concept of it being
- 10:27different than like a gym, but yeah,
- 10:31that was 2012.
- 10:33And by 2013, I was like, yeah,
- 10:36like where's, is there a competition?
- 10:38Can I like go compete in this somewhere?
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:41Yeah, it's funny.
- 10:42I had a girl that went to
- 10:45the Olympic trials in swimming on Friday.
- 10:48And she's 34 years old,
- 10:51and she uses CrossFit to train.
- 10:53She only gets in the pool one day a week.
- 10:56Yeah.
- 10:58And she CrossFits five days a week.
- 11:00Now, she's a sprinter.
- 11:02And she found that her body
- 11:04responded to that way more
- 11:06than doing a bunch of pool time.
- 11:09And she, at 34 years old,
- 11:11made the Olympic trials.
- 11:13Really?
- 11:14Yeah.
- 11:15That's awesome.
- 11:16Yeah.
- 11:17Is this somebody I should know?
- 11:18Who is this?
- 11:18Am I competing against her?
- 11:19Her name is Caitlin Johnson.
- 11:21What's her name?
- 11:22Caitlin Johnson.
- 11:23Oh, I've definitely heard of her.
- 11:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:25Yeah,
- 11:26and she's dabbling in CrossFit comps too.
- 11:27She's done Wadapalooza, TFF,
- 11:30some of those things as well.
- 11:32Yeah, it's crazy.
- 11:33Cause I, and I remember when I started,
- 11:34like basically as I was
- 11:36like phasing out of my like
- 11:37runner girl era that I thought I was,
- 11:39I was definitely not,
- 11:41but I didn't know what else to do,
- 11:42but I would like do these
- 11:42half marathons and like,
- 11:44train for half marathons.
- 11:45Anyways.
- 11:46Um, I was like,
- 11:47I had one in October and I
- 11:49started crossfitting in
- 11:50like July and I wasn't like
- 11:53ever really doing,
- 11:54I would do like one longer
- 11:55run a week and just
- 11:57crossfit the rest of the time.
- 11:58And I like had the best, like best,
- 12:01like half marathon
- 12:02experience run feeling good
- 12:04of my time that I was a runner.
- 12:07Um, and I was like,
- 12:08I really didn't like train
- 12:09running really.
- 12:11Um, so yeah,
- 12:12I fully believe that that's possible.
- 12:16So you're a registered dietitian.
- 12:18You've surrounded yourself
- 12:20with health and fitness by
- 12:21being an athlete and your
- 12:23career is nutrition and all
- 12:27of that stuff.
- 12:29Growing up,
- 12:29was that always your desire or
- 12:31was it just because you
- 12:32were always in sports?
- 12:34Um, you know, that's a funny question.
- 12:37Cause it's definitely, yeah,
- 12:39it's kind of like a saga.
- 12:41Um, because I think,
- 12:41I think a lot of people that come into,
- 12:44I mean, in this space in general, um,
- 12:46like nutrition and fitness
- 12:47go hand in hand.
- 12:48And of course I started out, um,
- 12:51like I've always been an athlete.
- 12:52Like that's, like I said,
- 12:54like always something I
- 12:56felt very like called to like
- 12:59called to be and just like a
- 13:01part of me and it was very
- 13:02natural for me to always
- 13:03want to be like training
- 13:06doing exercise making
- 13:07myself better trying to be
- 13:09better than how I was like
- 13:10that's like that's just
- 13:11comes to me naturally I
- 13:12don't know what that's
- 13:13about genetics or like just
- 13:16personality but for me
- 13:18that's not hard to do so
- 13:20whenever especially
- 13:21whenever I was like in college I
- 13:23Like, I would be, like, I was, like,
- 13:26the girl at the rec all the time.
- 13:27Like, that's where people knew me from.
- 13:29Because I was, like,
- 13:31I was just working out all the time.
- 13:33That was, like,
- 13:33the one thing I always wanted to do.
- 13:34And it's, like, I'm going to college.
- 13:36I got to pick something that I, you know,
- 13:38like, I would love to be an athlete.
- 13:40Like, ideally,
- 13:40if I could just work out all
- 13:41day and get paid for it, that was, like,
- 13:43the one thing I actually want to do.
- 13:44But.
- 13:45That's not a major option.
- 13:46You know, you can't pick that in college.
- 13:48So I was like, well,
- 13:49what's something close?
- 13:50Like clearly I'm not going
- 13:51to be in like I'm not
- 13:53making my sport a career.
- 13:54So I was like, well, it's something close.
- 13:57And I played along with
- 13:57round of like athletic training,
- 14:00of course, like physical therapy.
- 14:01You see a lot of physical
- 14:02therapists in like the CrossFit space.
- 14:04But I knew I wanted to do
- 14:04something that I could like
- 14:05work in athletics.
- 14:07Like I want to be in athletics,
- 14:08even if I wasn't doing it.
- 14:10um and so dietetics got in
- 14:13the mix in my brain um and
- 14:16so I ended up going that
- 14:17route just to try and stay
- 14:19in the sport realm and um
- 14:22so I knew I wanted to work
- 14:23in athletics but the whole
- 14:26time I just really wanted
- 14:27to be the athlete
- 14:29um but this is as close as I
- 14:31could get so um luckily
- 14:33it's worked out though that
- 14:34I can because I do work in
- 14:36most I get to work with a
- 14:37lot of athletes um being
- 14:39kind of now also still
- 14:41waving the flag of athlete
- 14:42myself obviously at
- 14:44different degrees
- 14:45throughout the past few
- 14:46years but um it allows me
- 14:48to kind of like walk the
- 14:49walk and talk the talk have
- 14:51the experience relate to
- 14:53the individuals um
- 14:55know so I get to to kind of
- 14:58have that as a unique kind
- 15:00of um twist to to my
- 15:03profession as a dietitian
- 15:04so um yeah it's always been
- 15:08natural for me um but also
- 15:10kind of to add to that
- 15:11story I also went through a
- 15:13pretty aggressive bout of
- 15:15eating disorder when I was
- 15:17in high school um in my
- 15:19freshman to sophomore year
- 15:20of high school and
- 15:23that drug on, I would say for a good bit,
- 15:26I mean,
- 15:26probably the better half of a
- 15:27decade where it was, you know,
- 15:29varying stages and phases
- 15:32of a disordered eating situation.
- 15:35And once I started CrossFit
- 15:37and started eating and
- 15:38performing at a high level
- 15:39and eating to perform and
- 15:41really understood what that meant,
- 15:42I learned a lot about, again,
- 15:44athletics and sports and
- 15:45nutrition and how it works together.
- 15:47So that made me better able
- 15:49to be like a sports specific dietitian.
- 15:52So
- 15:53So you were all work together.
- 15:55You were battling an eating
- 15:58disorder while you were
- 15:59studying dietetics in college.
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:02It's super embarrassing.
- 16:03Like to like, yeah,
- 16:05like now I can talk about
- 16:07it and like admit that.
- 16:09But at the time it's like,
- 16:10you never want to admit that.
- 16:11Cause it's like, no,
- 16:12who wants to get advice
- 16:13from someone who doesn't
- 16:14have their own shit together kind of,
- 16:15you know,
- 16:15and not to sound like rude to
- 16:17anybody else that, you know,
- 16:19is in a situation like that,
- 16:20but it was insecurity of mine.
- 16:22Right.
- 16:22So yeah.
- 16:23I knew that's why I got a nutrition coach.
- 16:26I got somebody to help me because I knew,
- 16:29even though I knew it
- 16:31because I was a professional,
- 16:32I was not doing myself any
- 16:34service by helping myself
- 16:37by clearly struggling.
- 16:39So I view it in a different perspective.
- 16:42I think you understand it
- 16:44more than anybody else
- 16:45because you fought that
- 16:46fight and you overcame it.
- 16:50Yeah, no,
- 16:51I now get to speak about it and
- 16:53like really help people.
- 16:56So from where I'm at in my life now,
- 16:58I feel like I've lived like
- 16:59several lives.
- 17:01So I've got, you know,
- 17:02this eating disorder
- 17:04history that I have taken
- 17:07some specialty education around.
- 17:08So I try and like I semi
- 17:11specialize in that.
- 17:11Also, you see a lot of that, unfortunately,
- 17:13in our sport and in sports in general,
- 17:16just a big struggle with that.
- 17:19Aesthetics versus
- 17:20performance versus just
- 17:23shit we learn or like
- 17:26absorb through the world
- 17:28and how we're supposed to
- 17:29feel about food and our bodies.
- 17:30So there's a lot of that going on.
- 17:31So I get to play that role
- 17:33and kind of have that scope.
- 17:34And then I also have just performance,
- 17:36high level, like serious athlete scope.
- 17:42And then also as a mom who's
- 17:44gone through pregnant
- 17:45postpartum experience,
- 17:46I also kind of have that experience.
- 17:47So I have a few different
- 17:50hats in my practice.
- 17:52So that's something I'm
- 17:54super grateful for.
- 17:55And I love working with a
- 18:00variety of people in all those realms.
- 18:02Are you still with M2 or are
- 18:04you out on your own?
- 18:05No, I work for M2.
- 18:06They're my...
- 18:09I started – like,
- 18:10that's where I started in this space.
- 18:13Mike, who – Mike Malloy, who started M2,
- 18:16he was my – like,
- 18:18my nutrition coach that
- 18:19helped me understand a
- 18:20little bit more eating at a
- 18:22high level of performance.
- 18:23And so I will always, like,
- 18:25wave that flag because that's my, like,
- 18:29origin story kind of in all
- 18:31of this space.
- 18:33But I also work for a local
- 18:34company here in Charlotte doing –
- 18:38Yeah.
- 18:38Another, another dietetic job.
- 18:40Cause with them too,
- 18:41I'm a nutrition coach here in Charlotte.
- 18:44I'm working with a company
- 18:45that's specifically RD licensed.
- 18:48So I get a, I get a,
- 18:50get a lot of like the
- 18:51sports action still like with them too.
- 18:54Cause that's a lot of people
- 18:55are coming through the
- 18:56CrossFit space and through
- 18:57sports specific.
- 18:59But yeah, here locally,
- 19:00I get to work with another
- 19:01gamut of people.
- 19:03Yeah.
- 19:03Mike is one of the nicest
- 19:04people I think I've ever
- 19:05met in this life.
- 19:06And he's so smart.
- 19:09I've learned so much from
- 19:10him and I'm so glad that he
- 19:12turned that into what he, yeah,
- 19:13he's built like something really awesome.
- 19:15All the M2 coaches are, we, he,
- 19:19he teaches us a lot.
- 19:20We learn a lot.
- 19:22So that's why we're,
- 19:23we're a really great
- 19:25company with good coaches
- 19:26is he puts a lot into his
- 19:27coaches to learn and
- 19:28understand and be better.
- 19:30So yeah, he's amazing.
- 19:33I read somewhere in one of
- 19:34your bios that you found
- 19:37after you got pregnant and
- 19:39you weren't competing as much,
- 19:41you'd kind of found peace
- 19:42in a 60 to 90 minute a day
- 19:44workout and with no pressure.
- 19:48Now you're being an athlete again.
- 19:50Are you still in that 60 to
- 19:5290 minutes a day or have
- 19:53you upped the volume?
- 19:54Dude, I add another kid in the mix.
- 19:56So no, we're,
- 19:57we're honestly down in volume.
- 19:59Like 60 minutes is asking a
- 20:00lot these days.
- 20:01So yeah,
- 20:02Oh yeah.
- 20:03For the better part of this year,
- 20:04it's like 35,
- 20:07anywhere between 35 to 60 minutes, um,
- 20:11depending on the day and
- 20:12what I have going on.
- 20:13I work out in my garage.
- 20:14Sometimes I really love when
- 20:15I can get to the gym.
- 20:17Um, so I, if anything,
- 20:18I've been trying to get to
- 20:19the gym more as I prep for the games,
- 20:22like making sure I'm in the
- 20:23gym using different implements,
- 20:24not just like what I have
- 20:26in my low ceiling garage.
- 20:28Um,
- 20:29Or I even work out at the
- 20:30YMCA where I can drop my
- 20:31kids off and they watch
- 20:32them for an hour for me and
- 20:33I go use whatever sort of,
- 20:35they've got a rower, they got dumbbells.
- 20:37So it's like some version of that.
- 20:42Yeah, it's a total random mix.
- 20:47But yeah,
- 20:48having a second child has for
- 20:50sure downed the volume, if anything.
- 20:57So the stress down the volume of training.
- 21:00So with two kids, both young, um,
- 21:05two jobs kind of, um,
- 21:08and a husband as well.
- 21:10How do you balance all this stuff?
- 21:13You know, that's the thing is I,
- 21:16I'm doing it all good,
- 21:17but I'm not doing any of it.
- 21:18Great.
- 21:19I think is like the real
- 21:20best way to put it.
- 21:21Like the third mother that
- 21:22said that to me this week.
- 21:24That's,
- 21:25and I think it's just the way that
- 21:26it is and you can have it all.
- 21:29Like I tell people like you
- 21:30can't have it all, you can't do it all,
- 21:32but
- 21:33None of it is going to be, like,
- 21:36to the best of your abilities.
- 21:37And I'm okay with that
- 21:40because I choose to be able
- 21:41to have it all.
- 21:42Like, I can't make up my mind.
- 21:44I have a really hard time
- 21:47with decision making.
- 21:48So I just keep doing all the things.
- 21:51And unfortunately, like,
- 21:53there are some things you
- 21:53can't sacrifice.
- 21:54Like, I can't just not work.
- 21:55But I love to just not work, of course.
- 21:57Unfortunately, my household,
- 21:58this is not a choice.
- 22:01You know, my husband is amazing.
- 22:02He has a great job as a teacher,
- 22:04but he has a great job as a teacher.
- 22:05So I will always be working
- 22:08to some degree to support my family.
- 22:11And CrossFit does not pay that bill.
- 22:13So I will continue being a
- 22:15dietitian until further notice.
- 22:17Yeah.
- 22:19But, yeah,
- 22:20it's because I want to do it all
- 22:22and I refuse to miss these
- 22:25years with my kids.
- 22:26I refuse to, yeah, not support my family.
- 22:29And I refuse to give up on
- 22:31doing something that gives
- 22:32me a feeling of, like,
- 22:33accomplishment and purpose.
- 22:36And I don't love to hurt anyone.
- 22:39I really don't even like to hurt anymore,
- 22:42but I find myself in this
- 22:43position where I've
- 22:44qualified for the CrossFit games, um,
- 22:46with making myself hurt minimally.
- 22:49And so, yeah, um, I don't know.
- 22:53I just still like to work
- 22:54out and it still gets me to
- 22:55where it still gets me here.
- 22:58So now it's a question of if
- 22:59I want to hurt, if I'm willing to, um, to,
- 23:03to make this worth it, I guess, but no,
- 23:05there is no balance.
- 23:06Um, all the balls are in the air.
- 23:09But I don't know how.
- 23:12It's probably not good.
- 23:15Like my brain and my nervous
- 23:18system are probably not at peak health.
- 23:23But in some aspects,
- 23:24it's a season of life and
- 23:26you are modeling good
- 23:28behaviors for your kids.
- 23:30Oh, yeah.
- 23:31I mean,
- 23:31I think that it's funny because I know,
- 23:34like, we hear,
- 23:35because we're surrounded by
- 23:36this stuff all the time and in this space,
- 23:38like, we see and hear, like,
- 23:40so many kids at gyms and, like,
- 23:42people's kids, like, on pull-up bars and,
- 23:44like, oh,
- 23:45my kid's going to grow up knowing this.
- 23:47And it's like, well,
- 23:48I feel like that's more
- 23:49kids than not that I see.
- 23:50That's because that's all I
- 23:51see because that's what's
- 23:52on my algorithms and that's
- 23:54who my friends are and all of that.
- 23:56But, like...
- 23:56when you look at like the
- 23:57greater picture like when I
- 23:59think about the kids and my
- 24:00friends or my the kids the
- 24:03friends in my kids classes
- 24:05I'm like I know these kids
- 24:06don't see this so for my
- 24:09son to be like yeah I swing
- 24:10on these rings and I you
- 24:12know he he's like mom I
- 24:13want to do your workout
- 24:14like you know like that's
- 24:16not a normal thing I think
- 24:17for kids to to see and do
- 24:21so the fact that it's just
- 24:22something that they're just gonna
- 24:24Just be like, yeah,
- 24:25that's how it is at my house.
- 24:27It's super awesome.
- 24:28And whether they decide they
- 24:30like it and want to do it
- 24:32is a different story,
- 24:32but it's not going to be
- 24:33something weird for them to
- 24:35be exposed to.
- 24:36And I think more and more
- 24:38that's happening.
- 24:39Again, it's just because I see that in my,
- 24:41you know, my surroundings, but I love it.
- 24:43So I will definitely, yeah, absolutely.
- 24:47No regrets on that being a
- 24:48byproduct of it.
- 24:50How old are the kids?
- 24:52Four and one and a half.
- 24:56So we're in the real crazy little times.
- 24:58So the four-year-old is
- 24:59getting close to a point where he,
- 25:02is it a he?
- 25:03Yeah.
- 25:04That he'll want to work out
- 25:05with mom and that he'll
- 25:06want to do some of these things.
- 25:08That's my hope.
- 25:09I ask him all the time or
- 25:10he'll say he wants to do a workout.
- 25:12Like his attention span is like a fly.
- 25:15Yeah.
- 25:15So he says he wants to do it
- 25:16and he'll do like one squat
- 25:18and then he'll like pick up
- 25:19his baseball bat and like
- 25:19run over and do something
- 25:20else and like run back.
- 25:21And like he's all he's dude,
- 25:23he's like a ping pong ball.
- 25:24So, yeah,
- 25:26whenever he like has the
- 25:27attention span to want to
- 25:28like actually do something.
- 25:31And he says and he wants to watch me.
- 25:32The thing is,
- 25:33he'll watch me because he's
- 25:34like my little Velcro child.
- 25:37Um,
- 25:37we're very close bonded to where I'm like,
- 25:40okay,
- 25:40I'm going to go outside and grab a
- 25:41workout.
- 25:42You got the kids.
- 25:43Oh yeah.
- 25:43Like I'm going to turn on
- 25:45the TV and then we'll like, go do this,
- 25:46blah, blah, blah.
- 25:47So in my mind,
- 25:48like my husband's got this
- 25:49covered and I've come out
- 25:50here and we've got a little door, um,
- 25:52for our cat to come in and
- 25:53out of the garage from the
- 25:54inside of the house.
- 25:55And I'm like in the middle
- 25:57of like trying to get my
- 25:58workout on and like the
- 25:59door opens and like a
- 26:00little hand comes out, blah, blah, blah,
- 26:02blah, blah.
- 26:03And I'm like,
- 26:04Oh my gosh.
- 26:05Like, or just like, yeah,
- 26:06I see like little hands
- 26:07reaching out the door and
- 26:08then it's like so distracting.
- 26:10But at that point I'm like, screw it.
- 26:12And I'm just like, come out,
- 26:13just come out here, whatever.
- 26:15And it's definitely like chaos.
- 26:17And I'm like, buddy,
- 26:18why don't you go inside with dad?
- 26:19And he's like, I just want to,
- 26:21I just going to sit here
- 26:22until you're done.
- 26:23I'm just going to sit here and watch you.
- 26:24And I'm like, whatever.
- 26:25Okay.
- 26:26So yeah.
- 26:28I mean, yeah,
- 26:28he sometimes like gets on my
- 26:29rower and like,
- 26:31like right before I'm supposed to be like,
- 26:32sometimes he's like in the way,
- 26:34but I'm also, and I told my husband this,
- 26:36cause I think I heard Jason Kalipa say,
- 26:39I never want to tell my kids.
- 26:40I think what he was saying
- 26:42is he would get up and
- 26:44always work out super early
- 26:45in the morning.
- 26:46Cause he never wanted to tell his kids.
- 26:47I can't, I have to go to the gym.
- 26:49Like if they want to do something,
- 26:50like I can't cause I've got
- 26:52to work out and like make
- 26:53them feel like they're a less priority.
- 26:55So if I'm working out in here,
- 26:57I never want to make them
- 26:58feel like this is more
- 27:00important than them and
- 27:01they can't be a part of it.
- 27:02Or, you know,
- 27:03like if it's going to cramp
- 27:05my style because my kid is
- 27:07on my equipment or whatever,
- 27:09I'm just like,
- 27:10I can take 10 seconds and
- 27:11like move them over and
- 27:13like explain it or move it around.
- 27:15Like, I don't care.
- 27:17Like, what's that costing me?
- 27:18Nothing.
- 27:19But like for me to feel like,
- 27:22I'm making them feel less by
- 27:25excluding them.
- 27:26Like that makes me feel worse, you know?
- 27:28So I,
- 27:30I let it be chaotic because of the
- 27:33bigger picture of what it really is.
- 27:35And not that like my workout
- 27:36is going to be ruined.
- 27:37Cause that's not important.
- 27:39Yeah.
- 27:40That that's special.
- 27:41And so who are you taking
- 27:43with you to the games?
- 27:45Everyone.
- 27:46Well, everyone in my house.
- 27:48So, yes, everyone's on deck.
- 27:52Unfortunately, we are not in a like, oh,
- 27:54we'll just call grandma and
- 27:55grandma can come stay for
- 27:57the week situation.
- 27:59Actually,
- 27:59my in-laws are going to be on a cruise.
- 28:01I was going to I tried to
- 28:02recruit them to Birmingham
- 28:03to come to come and be on
- 28:05hand and they're going to be gone.
- 28:08So we have some friends here who are big,
- 28:13big CrossFit fans, big Kinsey fans,
- 28:15and spend a lot of time with my kids.
- 28:17So they're going to come and
- 28:19hopefully run some
- 28:20interference on child watch
- 28:23duty so that my husband
- 28:24doesn't have to do all of it.
- 28:25Yeah, so it's mostly us, our family,
- 28:31and then our two friends and kids.
- 28:35truthfully and then all my
- 28:37misfit squad like all like
- 28:38so I'm still coached and
- 28:41associated with misfit
- 28:42which is also like another
- 28:43half job that I do I do
- 28:44some remote coaching um for
- 28:46them so yeah add that to
- 28:48the list um so they'll be
- 28:51there so I've got a big
- 28:52like team of of not like
- 28:55family but like my fitness
- 28:57family um so they'll be
- 28:59there but as far as like oh and like
- 29:03No one's uprooting their
- 29:06life for the Masters games,
- 29:09I don't think.
- 29:09No one's traveling from Charlotte,
- 29:11I really don't think,
- 29:12outside of my two friends.
- 29:14So I don't know.
- 29:16I also haven't really broadcasted it.
- 29:17So maybe I should be trying
- 29:19to recruit some spectators, but whatever.
- 29:22I've said this a couple times.
- 29:25Like,
- 29:25I don't know if people even realize this.
- 29:28The athletes from 35 to 49...
- 29:32have a collective 3 million
- 29:34followers on Instagram.
- 29:39And so people like they're
- 29:41not giving the masters
- 29:42credit that they have
- 29:43followers and they have
- 29:44people that are fans, but they really do.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:47I mean, it's not, it's not nothing,
- 29:49you know?
- 29:51Yeah.
- 29:53If a third of those people
- 29:54watch the stream,
- 29:56that's a successful stream.
- 29:58I mean, that's a lot.
- 29:59Yeah, for sure.
- 30:00I agree.
- 30:01I mean,
- 30:02it doesn't sound like a lot
- 30:03compared to the Open Division.
- 30:06Do the math on those followers, you know?
- 30:08So it's, you know, it pales in comparison,
- 30:10but it's also like, you know, yeah,
- 30:13what does success mean for
- 30:15this competition?
- 30:16And if they, yeah,
- 30:18if they want some viewership and...
- 30:21I guess, yeah,
- 30:22there's people out there supporting.
- 30:24It's just a lot of,
- 30:25I think people that are related to me,
- 30:27a lot of friends and family, not a lot of,
- 30:31I do.
- 30:32I still have a pretty, honestly, I,
- 30:35I never was trying to have
- 30:36the biggest following.
- 30:37I never really tried to make
- 30:40a career and a big paycheck
- 30:42off of my social media ads
- 30:45and posts and sponsorships
- 30:47a little bit here and there
- 30:47over the years.
- 30:48But yeah,
- 30:49Nothing crazy.
- 30:49I'm not trying to launch a
- 30:50brand or anything, so I never really gave
- 30:54a lot of that, my energy.
- 30:57And even since going through
- 30:58this phase of change of life,
- 31:00now I have a lot of mom content.
- 31:02Yeah, I lose some followers,
- 31:03but I gain some mom
- 31:04followers and people that
- 31:06care about that.
- 31:06So I'm not even sure who's
- 31:08out there giving a crap
- 31:09about what I do on social media anymore,
- 31:11but I just put out there
- 31:13what I want to put out there,
- 31:13not what I have to contractually anymore.
- 31:16So whoever's hanging around for that,
- 31:18I appreciate them.
- 31:19And
- 31:20I know that they really do
- 31:21like what I'm serving
- 31:23because it's been kind of
- 31:25all over the place over the
- 31:26last few years.
- 31:27So in regards to kind of like, yeah,
- 31:29that following and that support,
- 31:31like not that you asked,
- 31:32but just kind of naturally
- 31:33came up in this conversation.
- 31:34But like, I know the people that,
- 31:36that do care, like, like actually care.
- 31:38And it's not just like for, you know,
- 31:41other reasons that people
- 31:42are following me.
- 31:42So.
- 31:43Right.
- 31:44Real is always better.
- 31:46Apparently I don't, I like,
- 31:47I can't even keep up with that crap.
- 31:50Yeah, I'm saying like R-E-A-L.
- 31:52Oh, sorry.
- 31:53Real.
- 31:55Real is always better.
- 31:57No, that's what I've always said.
- 31:59Like, you know, what is this like,
- 32:00you know, quality over quantity.
- 32:02So I'm just like,
- 32:03I may not have a ton of
- 32:05people following me,
- 32:06but I know that the people
- 32:07that I do like I'm engaged
- 32:09with and like they
- 32:11appreciate what I'm
- 32:13bringing and I appreciate
- 32:14them for appreciating me.
- 32:16So I just try and I hope to
- 32:19be relatable is all.
- 32:21So that's hopefully what
- 32:23people are getting because
- 32:24that's all I got.
- 32:26I heard John Woolley talk about it,
- 32:28who was Make Wads Great Again,
- 32:30lost his account, had to start a new one.
- 32:33He was like,
- 32:33I had a half a million
- 32:34followers that weren't engaged.
- 32:36They just were like passive people.
- 32:39And he wanted to,
- 32:41in the recreation of the new channel,
- 32:43he wants it to be different
- 32:44and to be more engaged.
- 32:46He doesn't care about that big number.
- 32:47He just wants to have a real
- 32:49relationship with the
- 32:50people that are following him.
- 32:52Yeah.
- 32:52I was going to say that's,
- 32:54that's like a tricky too, because I don't,
- 32:55I don't even look at, I don't analyze,
- 32:57I don't look at the analytics.
- 32:58I don't look at the, like, again, I,
- 33:01I don't have no reason to,
- 33:02but I understand like
- 33:03engagement is different
- 33:04than just follows.
- 33:06And it's like, what's more important, um,
- 33:09you know, views or likes or this or that,
- 33:11like I hear about that
- 33:12stuff all the time and,
- 33:12or subscribers or not subscribers,
- 33:14but they're being watched,
- 33:15but they're not being subscribed.
- 33:16Like, I don't even know, but, um,
- 33:19But yeah, there's something to that.
- 33:21What I do.
- 33:22Yeah.
- 33:23It's so frustrating, but yeah.
- 33:25Yeah.
- 33:26I know.
- 33:26That's what I'm saying.
- 33:26Like, and then,
- 33:28and then you get algorithms
- 33:29and things get blocked and you know, like,
- 33:34yeah, I don't even, it's AI and things.
- 33:37I don't know.
- 33:38Some people buy followers,
- 33:39some people buy subscribers.
- 33:41So you don't even know what real is.
- 33:43Like you have no idea if
- 33:44you're doing good or bad
- 33:45because you don't know what's real.
- 33:47Technology is getting
- 33:48terrifying just with all of
- 33:51it and algorithms.
- 33:52And like I said, like what I,
- 33:55even when you try and then
- 33:57people don't like,
- 33:58sometimes they're just going to like,
- 33:59things aren't going to be
- 34:00seen because of algorithms.
- 34:03And so I'm just like, I don't know.
- 34:04Why am I caring?
- 34:05Why am I trying?
- 34:07So.
- 34:08So I want to,
- 34:09I want to thank you a ton for
- 34:11taking out the time to do this.
- 34:12I know you're super busy and
- 34:14I really appreciate it.
- 34:16We are going to be in Birmingham.
- 34:19We got access to behind the scenes.
- 34:21We're going to do a full
- 34:22behind the scenes documentary,
- 34:24just like they do for the elite athletes.
- 34:26Yes.
- 34:27I love those.
- 34:30Yeah.
- 34:31We're going to have fun.
- 34:32Ellie Hiller and myself will
- 34:34be backstage hanging out in
- 34:36the warmup areas, the corrals,
- 34:38just chatting with people
- 34:40to find out how the weekend's going.
- 34:42And then we'll have some
- 34:43videographers getting some
- 34:44footage from the floor and
- 34:46Great.
- 34:47Yeah,
- 34:47I don't know what the deal was on media.
- 34:49I heard there's a kerfuffle with media.
- 34:52You know,
- 34:52those media passes are not very
- 34:55well freely given these days, I hear.
- 34:57It's a lot of issues with
- 35:00the media situation.
- 35:01So I never know what to
- 35:02expect with coverage.
- 35:04And I don't even care what I
- 35:06look like because I don't
- 35:06think anyone's taking my picture.
- 35:08Yeah.
- 35:09So I can tell you this will
- 35:10be fully live streamed.
- 35:12Okay.
- 35:13They actually got Sean
- 35:14Woodland to call it since
- 35:16he wasn't good enough to do
- 35:18the games this year.
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:21He's going to do the Masters.
- 35:22So I think that's a win-win
- 35:24for the Masters athletes.
- 35:25Yes.
- 35:25Yes.
- 35:27So full stream.
- 35:28I negotiated this like four
- 35:30months ago with the
- 35:32organizers of legends.
- 35:34So we'll be back.
- 35:35We're not going to interfere
- 35:36with the live stream.
- 35:37We're just doing our own
- 35:38little documentary thing.
- 35:39So you'll have some,
- 35:40a couple of things to watch.
- 35:41And when you get back,
- 35:43Yes, because people always ask, you know,
- 35:45all my sweet friends at home,
- 35:46they're like, how can I watch this?
- 35:48And I'm like, I don't even know.
- 35:50Like,
- 35:50I don't know what sort of coverage
- 35:51there's going to be,
- 35:53what heats they're going to cover,
- 35:54if there's going to be
- 35:55commentation or if it's
- 35:56just like a camera propped
- 35:57up like in the rafters and
- 35:58you can just like squint
- 35:59and maybe like see where I like.
- 36:01I have no idea what to
- 36:02expect with the coverage.
- 36:04Yeah.
- 36:05Okay, well, that would be great.
- 36:07Because people always want
- 36:09to watch me do competitions.
- 36:10And I'm like,
- 36:11you can never see me even at the like,
- 36:13even at the games.
- 36:13I'm like, Oh, look, that's my ponytail.
- 36:16That's like right in front of Tia's head.
- 36:17But you can't tell it's me
- 36:18because it's on Tia.
- 36:19But that's my ponytail that
- 36:20keeps like coming in the frame.
- 36:22Like, there I am.
- 36:25Well,
- 36:25now that they know that you're not
- 36:26Jen Dancer,
- 36:26we'll definitely chat backstage.
- 36:29Yeah, but I mean,
- 36:31she's not going to be there, though,
- 36:32because Sam was not he's
- 36:34not doing the Masters this year.
- 36:35So if as long as she's not there, then,
- 36:37you know, it's definitely me.
- 36:38If you if you see somebody
- 36:39who looks like me,
- 36:40it's only me this time.
- 36:42You'll probably have the athlete badge on.
- 36:44So my name might be on my shirt.
- 36:46So that will also help you.
- 36:48There you go.
- 36:50Kenzie, this has been awesome.
- 36:53I hope you got a little break from,
- 36:54from the action inside the house.
- 36:57You know what?
- 36:57We did this in perfect time.
- 36:59I can still go in and make
- 37:00sure I show my face and
- 37:02they lose their mind one
- 37:03more time before they have
- 37:04to go to sleep.
- 37:04So perfect.
- 37:06Awesome.
- 37:06We'll have a great rest of your night.
- 37:07Thank you for doing this and
- 37:08we'll see you in a burping cam.
- 37:10All right.
- 37:10Yep.
- 37:10See you soon.
- 37:11Bye.
- 37:12And everybody in the chat,
- 37:13thank you for being here.
- 37:15Sorry, I lost my mouse.
- 37:17White on white is not good for old eyes.
- 37:19We'll see everybody next
- 37:20time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 37:22Bye, guys.
