Latest / That Car Show / Midnight at the Oasis
Transcript
- 0:00We're going to go really quickly but carefully for the next two
- 0:03miles, and that's because it was an active shooting range.
- 0:06This week it's a That car show, crew show and the gangs all
- 0:10here. Dan survived an off road trip
- 0:13across the damn desert from LA to Las Vegas, only to be held
- 0:16captive in a dark tunnel orchard by one of Elon Musk's foot
- 0:19soldiers. Lindsay pitches of some 2 car
- 0:22solutions that somehow don't involve a Pontiac Aztec.
- 0:26I'm still mad about losing car Bingo back in 1986.
- 0:29What does peak Ford mean to you? I bet you'll never guess where
- 0:33we end up. And no, it's not 19 O 8.
- 0:38Do us a favor and make sure that you are subscribed to that car
- 0:40show on your favorite platform. Take a minute to leave a rating
- 0:44and a review. Tell your friends, tell your
- 0:47enemies. It's that car show.
- 0:52That car show is brought to you by Sheffield Watches.

- 1:02enthusiast communities. Sheffield offers a wide
- 1:05selection of watches, many inspired by the iconic designs
- 1:08of its 1960s dive models, most notably the one that Jay's
- 1:11appearance gave him in 1970, which ignited his lifelong
- 1:14passion for watches. Sheffield watches are high
- 1:17quality, reasonably priced and a great value.

- 1:37Well, welcome back to that car show.
- 1:39I'm Lindsay and this week the gang is all back together.
- 1:43Both of the guys are with me, Ryan and Dan.
- 1:46Hi guys. How are you?
- 1:46It's. Good to see you just back from
- 1:49my shift at Best Buy. I haven't done any stunts at any
- 1:54movies and stuff, so I feel like I might be letting you guys down
- 1:57tonight. Yeah, but a good show last week.
- 1:59Thanks. Robert, thank you.
- 2:02Yeah, but I feel like you were out doing your best impression
- 2:06of a stunt driver because you had a pretty interesting road to
- 2:10Cela, which I also want to hear about.
- 2:12But can you tell us a little bit about the very adventurous, very
- 2:17exciting route that you took to get to this very unique event?
- 2:21Yeah, So we went to Seema the hard way and I, I say the hard
- 2:25way and I say we, I was actually a a passenger Princess from the
- 2:29journey. So I didn't actually drive, but
- 2:31I was kind of in a leadership role.
- 2:34But Seema obviously is the world's biggest automotive trade
- 2:37show, takes place once a year in our favorite place, Vegas.
- 2:43And we organized a rally where we decided that we would go to
- 2:47SEMA but not do tarmac, so not at.
- 2:50All. Well, I think we traveled 200
- 2:53miles of which probably about 30 miles with tarmac.
- 2:56It's pretty yeah, that counts no as no tarmac for sure.
- 2:59Yeah. And if you think about it, it
- 3:01was long days. It was like 9-10 hour days.
- 3:05Wow. In the desert.
- 3:06Wow. So for what is normally like a
- 3:09four hour or five hour drive. Yeah.
- 3:12So, yeah, so we we met in Palm Springs, we had 27 rigs of
- 3:18different kinds and types and there was everything from the
- 3:22folks that have got, you know, all the set up, the people in
- 3:25stock, Defenders and Lexuses. Alexis is the Lexi we're going.
- 3:31To go with Lexi here at that car show that's.
- 3:33Right. It's official.
- 3:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:36So we, we had a great tour guide, a guy called Martin.
- 3:40He'd done the route the week before, so he knew what to
- 3:43expect, but none of us did. We set off from Palm Springs.
- 3:48We ventured out to this track and he said to us like, we're
- 3:52going to go really quickly but carefully for the next sort of 2
- 3:56miles. And that's because it was an
- 3:58active shooting range, so either side of the track, people are
- 4:01allowed to shoot their guns. So we were safe.
- 4:05But yeah, it was interesting. That's a.
- 4:09Pretty wild lead in or he's like nothing to be alarmed, just with
- 4:13a quickness. Nothing to see here, move along.
- 4:16Right. So then we got.
- 4:18One way to light a fire under your butts, right?
- 4:21Definitely. Don't mind the live ammo.
- 4:23Carry on. Yeah.
- 4:26Definitely something that we wanted to get through, but then
- 4:28everyone aired down. So we we took this very
- 4:32seriously in terms of, you know, down to 20 PSI, you know,
- 4:36convoying. We all had rugged radios, so
- 4:39rugged radios and sponsored and given us radios.
- 4:41So the whole convoy was, you know, talking to each other as
- 4:44we were kind of taking this trip.
- 4:47It was I was a passenger in a modified F-150 so almost like a
- 4:52pre runner trophy truck type thing.
- 4:55But. But it was, yeah, a lot of fun,
- 4:57a lot of camaraderie. We spent the end of day one or
- 5:02stayed overnight at auto camp in Joshua Tree.
- 5:05So if you're not aware, this is a, and I think there's a few of
- 5:09them around the US, but it's Airstreams.
- 5:11Oh. How fun.
- 5:13So you allocated your Airstream. So it's a bit of blamping, yeah.
- 5:17Exactly. You're offering, Yeah.
- 5:19I was kind of hoping for a Four Seasons, but sadly that didn't
- 5:22turn out. So yeah, we were clamping for
- 5:25the night. Each each caravan had its own
- 5:28fire pit. So but it kind of felt well
- 5:31deserved after day one. Day 2, we had to be on the track
- 5:36at 7:00 AM. That was the only way we would
- 5:38get to Vegas before sunset. Oh my gosh.
- 5:42So another day of off roading, tighter trials.
- 5:46There were a couple of trials that were just completely open
- 5:49and we were able to just go for it in the middle of the trip.
- 5:52We got to this like farm and it was an active farm that did like
- 5:59animal feed, but in, in essence, you had like a number of massive
- 6:04green circles, which is where they were irrigating and
- 6:07watering. But this was in like in the, it
- 6:09was like coming across an Oasis. Like it was just unbelievable.
- 6:14I'll be very careful. It was a farm shaped Oasis a.
- 6:17Farm shaped Oasis, but it was just like the aerial views of
- 6:21this is desert, desert, desert and just these green patches,
- 6:25but big patches. And then eventually we rolled
- 6:29into Sema in time, which was great.
- 6:32But the valets, the valet looks were like what, what?
- 6:36What have you guys brought? Right.
- 6:38You're expecting us to deal with this?
- 6:41Yeah, so that was that was our adventure pre seamer.
- 6:45So can I, can I interrupt real quick?
- 6:46Is this something you enjoyed off roading?
- 6:48I mean, you are traditionally sort of an on road, a tarmac
- 6:52guy. Were you, were you tempted by
- 6:53the taste of an off roading nuts and honey?
- 6:56I mean, is this maybe you didn't have that commercial in the UK,
- 6:58but is this something you would you could see doing yourself and
- 7:02and pursuing again, was this? Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:06It's, I think having a guide, it really makes it right.
- 7:10Yeah, so we we had a really great guide and you know Martin
- 7:15and the team kept us safe. There was various points where
- 7:18they would spot for us. There's one bit where we kind of
- 7:21got to this gully and there was like a big steep sandy hill and
- 7:26they would basically coach each each car through that.
- 7:30And what was interesting is the the actual the car that did the
- 7:32best in that specific thing apart from the pre runner was a
- 7:36stock defender on Steely's. Really.
- 7:40So. Well, how timely that's.
- 7:43Right, you can share that. Story with people.
- 7:45You might be meeting Lindsay. That's amazing.
- 7:48I was going to ask you, were there any standouts kind of one
- 7:50way or another? And so would you?
- 7:52Was it like a dune, basically like a sand dune?
- 7:54Yeah, like a like a big steep sandhill.
- 7:58I guess that's a dune, is it? Yeah, yeah.
- 8:01We call them Sandhills in the UK.
- 8:02I don't know if that's formal or not, but I do.
- 8:04That's not as foreboding. I don't.
- 8:06Know yeah, and there's definitely I mean, nobody says
- 8:09my favorite movie was Sandhill, but here we go.
- 8:13Those are cranes, right? But you did the, you know, the
- 8:17very best part about this was, was that you did it in someone
- 8:19else's vehicle, right? That's I think the best kind of
- 8:22off roading is when you're off roading in someone else's truck,
- 8:24right? Yeah, yeah, it's like boats,
- 8:26isn't it? Exactly.
- 8:27It's like a lot There is, there really is.
- 8:30You know, I was looking back through some of my like defender
- 8:33off roading footage today and it really does make all the
- 8:36difference like I think you experienced and having a guide,
- 8:39it's just sort of this because I don't know, have you done much
- 8:43off roading before this? A little bit, but nothing like
- 8:47in the UK is like green landing and things like that.
- 8:49So which is is not really the same level of rugged terrain.
- 8:53Is it as remote as you were on this trip?
- 8:58I think different remotes, but yeah, I mean on this trip our
- 9:01cell phones didn't work the whole time.
- 9:03Really. How you know?
- 9:05Which was really nice, believe it or not.
- 9:08Yeah, it's a nice break, right? Yeah, The reason I asked if you
- 9:12enjoyed it is I've done a couple of these adventures, right,
- 9:16these organized things and I I absolutely love it, right.
- 9:18It's a slower pace. It's it's, you know, yeah, I
- 9:21don't know. It's and I always come back from
- 9:23these things thinking, well, I'm going to go buy a Land Rover or
- 9:26a Forerunner or something. Of course I never do because
- 9:28real life. But I absolutely could see
- 9:31getting into it. And glad to glad to hear that
- 9:34you enjoyed it too. I think the one thing for me is
- 9:37you develop more of a camaraderie.
- 9:39So, you know, imagine if you're doing AI, don't know a track
- 9:42session or you're doing a rally, you're not going to get to that
- 9:45same level of camaraderie because you haven't overcome
- 9:48these things together, right? Yeah, what?
- 9:51Was the strangest thing you saw out in the desert.
- 9:54See any UFOs or anything? Well, I think it was that Oasis,
- 9:57like just coming across the Oasis and then we had to like go
- 10:01around it respectfully. So we slowed down and we took
- 10:05took a ride, but it's just really surreal.
- 10:07Like, you know, green, the greenest, whatever it was, the
- 10:11greenest you've ever seen. So you've got all these like,
- 10:14great, you know, Sandy and. And then just green, bright
- 10:17green, Yeah. Yeah, no crops, better places
- 10:19for that deserts, but yeah. Right.
- 10:22Yeah, They might be doing something right if they're still
- 10:24in business. Yeah, You know, they were just
- 10:27trying to make you feel at home. They're like, we need some crop
- 10:29circles for Dan and so we're going to put a farm here.
- 10:34There's still a thing crop circles like it's all you heard
- 10:37about there for. Yeah.
- 10:38OK. All right.
- 10:38Yeah. And it was people doing it,
- 10:41wasn't it? It was people messing with
- 10:42people. That's what they ultimately like
- 10:45believe that's that was the final answer for now until we
- 10:47hear otherwise. But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:50So is that I wonder if it's like artisan animal feed and they're
- 10:54like right. But was this grown in the
- 10:55deserts of Nevada? Was this from the Oasis farm?
- 11:01Because that is all that my dogs will eat.
- 11:03Come on. Yeah.
- 11:04The only thing that. Sound like a That whole stretch
- 11:06was a date shake, right? That's pretty wild, but OK, so
- 11:14defenders and the pre runner trophy truck, those were the
- 11:18winners. Yeah, and the Jeeps did really
- 11:21well. It was like 3392 Jeeps.
- 11:24Is it 392? It's the ones with the HEMI
- 11:26engines where they're like, this is the last version of it.
- 11:29And then they go, and here's a new, a new last version of it,
- 11:31right? But they did very well as well.
- 11:35You know, if you've got anything that you can just unlock the
- 11:39sway bar, you know, you can go down to the low, you can crawl
- 11:45across these rocks, you're going to do really well.
- 11:48Not a lot of Tiguans in that crew, huh?
- 11:50I didn't see any. I think there was a couple of
- 11:52like wrecks on the side of the, you know, the tig ones that
- 11:55never made. It.
- 11:57Vaguely resembled a Tiguan that had attempted going to see me
- 12:00the hard way. Well, I love the name of the
- 12:02rally. Like that in itself puts a smile
- 12:04on your face and you know you're in for a good time.
- 12:07OK, so you had this epic adventure to then kick off Yet
- 12:10another epic adventure of a very different sort.
- 12:13So what did you think of Seema? Like tell us.
- 12:16Everything. My mind was blown.
- 12:21Have you both been to Seema? I have not.
- 12:25OK, you. You've been Ryan.
- 12:28I went a couple years ago. We at the time was doing the
- 12:31steering committee and we had a sponsor Swiss Tracks and we
- 12:35thought we had won the lottery when they said here, take our,
- 12:37our passes, our, our exhibitor passes to go to Seema.
- 12:41Oh wow. But you know, I, I, in
- 12:43retrospect, I had no way they were probably so ready to give
- 12:47them up. But I think for me, what colored
- 12:50my experience was sort of the event before the event.
- 12:54We flew, we somehow got diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport,
- 12:58which I think might be the worst airport in the continental US.
- 13:02And then we had to find a rental car along with the rest of the
- 13:05airport when all the flights were delayed or cancelled for
- 13:08some reason and then drive. So it was already like dark out.
- 13:11And then we had to find the rental car, then drive to Vegas.
- 13:15And we got a late start because we had to wait 3 or 4 hours
- 13:17before our Pelican cases came down on the carousels.
- 13:21And if you've ever stood and stared at a luggage carousel for
- 13:25any length of time, it's hypnotic, especially after three
- 13:27hours. And eventually, you know, they,
- 13:30they appeared, we got in the world's stinkiest rental car.
- 13:33I don't know if you've ever rented a car from like one of
- 13:36those cheaper rental outfits, like a dollar or a fox or a, you
- 13:40know, thrifty, you know, well, this was from one of those.
- 13:44So the car had almost certainly like transported a dead body at
- 13:47some point in time. It just maybe multiple.
- 13:50Bodies, yeah. Yeah, to dispose of in that
- 13:53desert. So I will admit that by the time
- 13:54we finally got to SEMA, I at least was cranky and tired.
- 13:58And the last thing I needed was, you know, hotel room with, you
- 14:03know, the the drifting 24/7 and the Dan I.
- 14:07And if this is this was my impression.
- 14:09I felt like I was at a party where I didn't know anyone,
- 14:12right? It was overwhelming.
- 14:15There was it was there was too much.
- 14:18I didn't really speak the language for the most part.
- 14:20Certainly there was some crossover, but I just didn't
- 14:24really feel like it's kind of like Vegas, right?
- 14:27You're a Vegas person or you're not a Vegas person.
- 14:29And I think seems kind of the same way.
- 14:30And I don't think I'm a Sema person at heart.
- 14:33That said, we did have some fun. We did the boring tunnel tunnel,
- 14:37which I think you did as well, which which I appreciate only
- 14:41for like the the relative calm and solace of being in a Tesla,
- 14:44you know, in a in a cave beneath Vegas.
- 14:48But yeah, it's one of those like maybe every five year things for
- 14:51me, if that, yeah. It was.
- 14:55I didn't get. Any solace in the Tesla because
- 14:58the lady in front thought she was auditioning for the voice so
- 15:02Lord. You're trapped.
- 15:03I was. Trapped in a tunnel with a lady
- 15:06who was singing some sort of thing that represented music and
- 15:10I literally had no way to escape.
- 15:12So that was my traumatic boring tunnel experience.
- 15:17Well, OK, so. For those who don't know, which
- 15:20I am one of those because you get in line to get in the cars
- 15:24and they just pair you with whoever you're in line with
- 15:28because how did you end up with, yeah, you know, the next opera
- 15:31Sayer has? Built a tunnel network
- 15:33underneath Vegas right as part of his boring company.
- 15:37Is it a? Network, Dan, Or is it a tunnel?
- 15:40I think we're. Being met right here.
- 15:41Because is it a network? No.
- 15:42OK, because. They're opening up, I think in
- 15:44two months time they're opening up the airport.
- 15:46So the airport will go straight downtown, OK.
- 15:49So I would class that as a network.
- 15:51Well, the airport. Is kind of downtown, shall we
- 15:53say? It's a a budding network, a
- 15:55budding. Network A growing network.
- 15:58Of tunnels. It didn't, if I recall.
- 16:00Yeah, you kind of have to take it because there aren't a lot of
- 16:02options, right, To get from like one end to the other, right.
- 16:06The conference room. Yeah.
- 16:07I. Mean you can walk like is your
- 16:10other option, but but it's interesting because they haven't
- 16:13quite yet got the autonomy. So at the moment it's drivers.
- 16:19And then when you go in the tunnel, you don't realize it as
- 16:21a passenger, but it's all lit with special lighting and the
- 16:25lighting is giving the driver signals.
- 16:28So if the lighting goes red, slow down.
- 16:32If the lighting goes green, speed up so you're oblivious to
- 16:35it initially. But I started talking to a
- 16:37different lady who wasn't singing like a banshee and she
- 16:42was explaining what all these lights meant in the tunnels.
- 16:45Interesting. It's.
- 16:46Not just for a show, no. No, it's not just there for your
- 16:49entertainment. It was.
- 16:51Yeah, well. Maybe be glad you had the
- 16:55singing because I kept waiting for something to happen.
- 16:57Like it was like a like a dark ride in an amusement park.
- 17:00I kept waiting for something like jump out some the boiling
- 17:04tunnel. Jumps or something.
- 17:05Yeah, yeah. Like I just, it kind of was.
- 17:08I mean, I guess the name kind of says it all.
- 17:11That was a little boiling. Tunnel, yeah.
- 17:13Interesting, but the. Show the size of the show.
- 17:15You can't comprehend how big. It's almost like an airport,
- 17:20like a big airport. And there's outside and inside,
- 17:24so big convention halls inside and then there's at least 2
- 17:29tracks with continuous rubber being burnt.
- 17:34So people are either doing, you know, drift examples or they're
- 17:38like, there was just so much going on.
- 17:43I, I probably did about 18,000 steps a day.
- 17:48So my feet were absolutely, you know, shot to pieces.
- 17:54A few highlights though. Subaru did reveal the new Gym
- 17:59Carner car. So Travis Pastrana has been in
- 18:04Australia. It was a bit of a badly kept
- 18:07secret because I ended up being with Travis a few months ago.
- 18:11And he said, yeah, I'm about to film this Gym Carner.
- 18:14And I said, oh, where is it? And he went, I can't tell you.
- 18:16And then about 10 minutes later, he bumped into a buddy of his
- 18:20who he'd worked with on Gym Carner.
- 18:22And just when they finished talking to each other, when this
- 18:25guy said to Travis, I'll see you in Australia then.
- 18:30So that was out of the bag. But it's a Subaru brat.
- 18:35So I think the video goes live in a couple of weeks, OK.
- 18:39That's pretty cool. That's good.
- 18:41See, that gets me excited, right?
- 18:42Yeah, I. Like that.
- 18:44So that was revealed. The Hoonigan folks had a big
- 18:49courtyard with. I think Hoonigan is now part of
- 18:52a wider company that does all sorts from wheels to suspension.
- 18:57So under the umbrella Hoonigan they had all the different
- 18:59sections. Leah Block had her GR Corolla
- 19:04incidentally. Ryan, are you missing yours?
- 19:08I think I've thought about it daily, honestly, and I'm
- 19:10actually writing an article for Autoblog about it now,
- 19:13tentatively titled Can an Old Man GR Corolla?
- 19:18You need to go dot dot. They're great, right?
- 19:22Well, I also have an. Asterisk because, you know, I'm
- 19:24not quite ready to to join that right category, that
- 19:28demographic. But no, it was fantastic.
- 19:32It was a fantastic car. But no, we want to go drive the
- 19:33Type R Civic and all its competition.
- 19:35So sorry, yeah. So Leah's car was there.
- 19:38She's modifying a GR Corolla. Nice, nice.
- 19:41So a couple of the chem block cars, so the 43 Institute were
- 19:46there, which is great. And they they do great work.
- 19:49They're obviously a charity in Ken's name.
- 19:52And then you just go through different holes with different,
- 19:55it's a bit geeky. So if you're not really into the
- 19:58trade stuff. So there's a whole hole on tires
- 20:02and all it is is different tire companies and they might have a
- 20:05show car or two, which is pretty cool.
- 20:07But then they've got the machines for fitting the tires,
- 20:11another hole for detailers. So the Grios, yeah, You know,
- 20:15all those sorts of folks have got different stands, yeah.
- 20:19So you can remember you can. Really dive deep in whatever
- 20:22your area of interest is. Yeah, and.
- 20:25Like. Very granular it sounds like.
- 20:28I remember going into some of these halls though and just
- 20:30praying that no one would come up to me and like want to like,
- 20:32speak the language with me. Scan your badge.
- 20:34They want to scan your badge, right?
- 20:36Oh. That's right, that's right,
- 20:37that's right. I think the.
- 20:39Points. What do they do?
- 20:40They level. Up if if they What's that all
- 20:42about? You just get.
- 20:43Spam. So they e-mail.
- 20:45You after they've scanned your badge.
- 20:48And so there weren't many manufacturers there, but there
- 20:51was a big Toyota presence. How interesting.
- 20:55Yeah, so. That was pretty cool.
- 20:57They launched the the new Rav 4 GR edition, which doesn't have a
- 21:03It's not a fully blown GR. So I think they call it GR
- 21:08edition or something. So in essence, it's a ramp 4.
- 21:10It's got Corolla suspension on it, I believe, but no change in
- 21:14the engine. But it's got like a little
- 21:15spoiler at the back like you need to look it up.
- 21:18But it it was a cool car. Yeah, it was the official launch
- 21:23I think. Spoiler.
- 21:25That's how you know it's good. That's right.
- 21:27And. Obviously needs the downforce
- 21:29being, you know, SUV with a right height and a.
- 21:32Right. It was good matter.
- 21:36Was it the the Mitsubishi Pajero or whatever?
- 21:39Right. You know the you know it's good
- 21:41enough for the Rav 4 GI. So I think you're right.
- 21:45It's like Vegas. You don't want to go every year.
- 21:47Yeah. Yeah, what?
- 21:49What is it about Vegas? I mean, it's like the strip club
- 21:51of cities, right? You just feel like you're just
- 21:53getting like scammed at every, you know, you have to be on.
- 21:57Guard. Yeah, I work too.
- 21:59Hard for my money and everyone says Vegas is like crazy, crazy
- 22:02expensive now, right? Like they just they tack on fees
- 22:05for this and for that. And you know, I just, I don't
- 22:08know, maybe it's fun when you're on the company dime, but just of
- 22:11all the places you can spend your time, Vegas is just not you
- 22:15got to you got to go once, right?
- 22:16You got to go once, do it right. Yeah, because you can't explain
- 22:20it like you have to experience it, which it sounds like SEMA is
- 22:24a bit like that, like you can't fully appreciate it unless
- 22:26you've experienced it yourself. I think we can agree they both
- 22:31elicit very strong reactions. They're very polarizing.
- 22:34Like, like you said, Ryan, people either love him or hate
- 22:36him. And I think people say that
- 22:37about Vegas as well. So the one thing I kept seeing
- 22:42on Instagram from like other car journalists and things and
- 22:45people who had maybe never been there before, maybe had been
- 22:48there 10 times, was they didn't really have anything to say to
- 22:51like, illustrate their photos. So the phrase I saw over and
- 22:55over again was, well, Sema's a wrap.
- 23:00So there wasn't any like and I went that's that's not typical
- 23:04of SEMA. So I wonder if it was just this
- 23:06year. Usually they're like, well we
- 23:08saw XYZ or this was notable or. There were good builds.
- 23:13Yeah, that's the other thing seems.
- 23:15Famous for right the builds right far apart.
- 23:17It's not like all the builds are in one place, if I recall right.
- 23:20So you kind of have to, it's kind of a scavenger hunt to find
- 23:22the good stuff, right? And you know, it's, it's the
- 23:26seamless scavenger. Hunt So Dan, did you see like
- 23:29did you get a chance to check out some of the builds and what
- 23:31did you see and what were your thoughts?
- 23:33Yeah, there. Was all sorts of crazy builds.
- 23:35So one was a lowered Hummer. I think it had six wheels, but
- 23:41it was almost like a dragster Hummer.
- 23:44The one that I really liked was they did an F40 and completely
- 23:48modernized the F40 and that looked really, really cool.
- 23:51So that was probably. My highlight and you were into.
- 23:54It Yeah. So.
- 23:56Which which Hummer model did they modify?
- 24:00It was like a. Civilian H3.
- 24:02Is that the? Yeah, that's a.
- 24:05Tiny one. Right.
- 24:06Yeah, this thing. Was tiny.
- 24:08Oh yeah, so that would. Be 3.
- 24:10Yeah, interesting. Yeah, yeah, what an.
- 24:12Interesting choice to do that too.
- 24:14So it was, it was like slammed. Really slammed.
- 24:17Like it almost looked like a dragster.
- 24:19Yeah. Yeah, it was super weird.
- 24:21Super weird. Yeah, in a while they were
- 24:23smoking when they. Created that any.
- 24:25RWB Porsches or liberty walk in cars or things I.
- 24:28Think I Shouldn't I send you a picture?
- 24:29That was a golf. A golf coloured RWB, Yeah.
- 24:33And then next to that was Jorge's friend, our our friend
- 24:37Jorge from Tormenti Tarmac. Yeah, his friend has got a a
- 24:40Violet 355 convertible. Nice.
- 24:44Oh, nice, so that's. Violet.
- 24:47And what did you think of it in that color I loved?
- 24:49It it was great. Yes, nice.
- 24:52Yeah. And did you see this is how
- 24:55little I know about SEMA actually.
- 24:57So I have to go so I can learn about it, but I don't know if
- 24:59they do the big trucks every year.
- 25:01They're like really over the top, yes.
- 25:04No, they did. There was a whole line of them
- 25:05and some of them were like, yeah, you were just looking at
- 25:08their navels right there. It's just, yeah, that's.
- 25:10What has always struck me in the pictures is like, not only are
- 25:13they just outrageous builds in general, but the height, they're
- 25:16all raised up so high. Crazy, so I'm.
- 25:20Sorry, what is above your shoulder there?
- 25:22I, I, I, I see something. If you're watching this, maybe
- 25:25you see it too. It is.
- 25:28It's a fabulous new sign that our friend of the show Tory made
- 25:35happen. So it's a sign of our logo.
- 25:38That's excellent. That's excellent.
- 25:39Right now I'm always seeing Dan's head, but right for the
- 25:41rest of. Dan and I right now.
- 25:43There we go. You got the best side exactly.
- 25:47Dan's not always with us, so now he's with us twice right now
- 25:49tonight in. Spirit.
- 25:52That's right. That's very cool.
- 25:53Though yeah, it is. It turned out really well.
- 25:56It's super fun. And yeah, did a little, did a
- 26:00little remodeling of the studio and that was one of the first
- 26:03pieces to go up. So yeah, it's.
- 26:05And they will be available on our Amazon store just in time
- 26:08for the holidays. That's.
- 26:11Right, they're at the top of everyone's gift list.
- 26:13Obviously we love it. Well, I think, I think bottom
- 26:18line, I have to go to see my next year so that we've all been
- 26:21one for the team. I was going to say I will take
- 26:23one for the team. Dan's off the hook.
- 26:24Ryan doesn't have to go again yet.
- 26:26Well, now they're not going to. Let me back.
- 26:29That's right. No, you have to pitch it as
- 26:32like, listen, my first experience was not, I was not as
- 26:36you'd hoped. So I'd like to come back and
- 26:38let's try again. And this was the first year they
- 26:41actually let like civilians in, right?
- 26:43Like that was the other thing about this year.
- 26:45So I wonder if that, you know, change things.
- 26:47They were, sort of. Finding their rhythm or
- 26:48whatever, yeah. I think that.
- 26:51Was part of it because I would always see the pictures before,
- 26:54but it was like you said, it was sort of a very closed set for a
- 26:58long time. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:59You had to. I wonder how that'll change
- 27:01things, but I know. Well, I, I will go check it out
- 27:04next year and let you know and we'll see.
- 27:07But Ryan, it sounds like you are going to have a pretty
- 27:10interesting Speaking of roads to events, you're going to have an
- 27:14interesting trip on your way to Thanksgiving.
- 27:17So can you share about the new the chariot that you'll be
- 27:21enjoying? Well, because we're.
- 27:22Crazy. We drive to most holidays,
- 27:26family things, right? So we'll be driving from Denver
- 27:28to to Wisconsin this year. Please don't break into my
- 27:31house. We have a very advanced security
- 27:34system and a dog. But who will be in a kennel?
- 27:37But anyway, we're driving from Denver to to Milwaukee and a
- 27:44Genesis AGV 70. It's the 3.5.
- 27:48So it's the six cylinder. It's a 3.5 turbo.
- 27:50Genesis has a very generously allowed me to, to do that.
- 27:55And you know, you guys know this, but often times when you
- 27:57get a press car, you're sort of sort of unspoken, but you're
- 27:59limited to 500 miles. So to put like 2500 miles on a
- 28:02car is, is, is really very good of them.
- 28:05And so I will report back. I, I really like the, the G90
- 28:10sedan, the big, you know, massage seats, you know, for
- 28:14position massage sheets and everything else car.
- 28:16I don't know if this will be quite to that level, but it
- 28:19should be fun and looking forward to it.
- 28:21So I'm sure I have lots of, lots of things to say about it.
- 28:23And, you know, it's certainly nicer than anything we would
- 28:27have ended up with from Hertz. So I'll tell you that.
- 28:29And, and with, with, with flying and all that, you know, we're
- 28:32kind of looking like the geniuses right now too, right.
- 28:34So instead of that, yeah, cheapskate.
- 28:36So no kidding. Back looking forward to.
- 28:38It Yeah, I. Think it's going to be a pretty
- 28:40epic adventure, yeah. It should be good but anyone
- 28:43listening if you have any points of interest or like photo spots
- 28:47between Denver and Milwaukee you think I should stop and take a
- 28:50picture of for the inevitable auto blog article when I'm back.
- 28:55That's true, please do Fort Cody.
- 28:58Either of you heard of Fort Cody?
- 28:59It's this I have not. It's this Old West themed, I
- 29:05don't know, roadside attraction somewhere in western NE that
- 29:10Buffalo. Is it Buffalo Bill?
- 29:12Buffalo Bill Cody? Is that the the guy?
- 29:15Anyway, it's this. It's this very.
- 29:16Old school, like, you know, tourist trap where it looks like
- 29:20a stockade and then you go in and it's, you know, it's all
- 29:24like, you know, crap from China, you know, and candy and stuff.
- 29:27But we'll probably stop there. You know, I think the world's
- 29:31largest covered wagon is somewhere along the way.
- 29:34So maybe that's another stop. But anyone listening any any any
- 29:38suggestions, questions, please do let us know and we're going
- 29:42to. Start a Go Fund Me a Go Fund Me
- 29:45page for Ryan's daughter so we can get a Netflix subscription
- 29:48for her so she doesn't have to go to all these attractions
- 29:52sheets. Today are so spoiled.
- 29:55Let me tell you. You know, I mean, we used to
- 29:56look forward of stops like that because, I mean, how many times
- 29:59can you play, you know, car bingo with those little red, you
- 30:02know, translucent sliders, right?
- 30:04Yeah, used to play license plate games, right?
- 30:08Yeah, that was like the height of entertainment, you know, when
- 30:11you were Rd. tripping. Wasn't there a beetle?
- 30:13Game You saw a beetle where you could punch your brother.
- 30:16Oh. Yeah.
- 30:17Punch buggy or slug bug? Yeah.
- 30:19Yeah, you're right. Yeah, 1 headlight out and you
- 30:21know that kind of thing. And oh, that sounds.
- 30:23Like a? That sounds like a more advanced
- 30:25version than we played. It was more.
- 30:27Violent time. Well, and I mean, when you're
- 30:31talking about the the license plate game, when you had that
- 30:35little, you know, cardboard thing with the sliding red, that
- 30:38was kind of an advanced, you know, fancy version of that too,
- 30:41as opposed to just yelling out the state.
- 30:43It's it's true. But like, some of those cards
- 30:45are better than others. Do you remember this?
- 30:47Oh yeah. Like some you cannot win on to
- 30:48save your life, right? Highly specific stuff that you
- 30:53know, so we never have. This so I've got no idea what
- 30:56you guys are talking about. Oh my.
- 30:58God, OK, you know I'm. Trying to find one on eBay
- 31:01because it was, it was this little cardboard like, you know,
- 31:058 by 11 or whatever piece of cardboard kind of two layers and
- 31:09it had the different states. And the whole intent was
- 31:13obviously to keep you busy on a road trip.
- 31:14But you're looking at the cars that you're passing and as you'd
- 31:17see a state that you hadn't seen before, it had this thin red,
- 31:23like vellum almost or something, and you'd slide it to cover
- 31:26almost. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:27With a little yeah, one each. Yeah, everyone.
- 31:30Had one and you just. I mean if.
- 31:32Your family was fancy, We just had one.
- 31:35We also had. One that was like roadside
- 31:37attraction. So like if you pass a church or
- 31:39whatever, but then some of the stuff was really subjective,
- 31:41like, you know, you're like is. That a hill or is that a
- 31:44building? So you know that just started
- 31:48arguments and but so this. Is where the family dynamics
- 31:51reveal like the success of the game depended on your family
- 31:54dynamics. Like is everybody?
- 31:57Well, that's it, You're already. In the back of a 48 horsepower
- 31:59Volkswagen Dasher, right? And then you throw, you know,
- 32:02automotive bingo on top of it. It's amazing any of us survived
- 32:05so right. This feels oddly specific, but I
- 32:09think this. Is a therapy session for Ryan.
- 32:12It always is. That's the beauty of car people,
- 32:17right? Yes.
- 32:19Well, Dan, it sounds like you. So you came back from SEMA and
- 32:23then you got to experience something new at Universal
- 32:27Studios that it was again automotive themed as is customer
- 32:31watched. I didn't.
- 32:32Get to experience, unfortunately.
- 32:33So next year there's a new ride coming to Universal Studios.
- 32:36Yeah. So I now being a resident in
- 32:39California, you can get a discounted season pass that's.
- 32:43Right, so I thought. I would get a discounted season
- 32:45pass and went yesterday and they've got a new ride which is
- 32:50called Fast and Furious Hollywood Drift I believe.
- 32:55And if you've been to Universal Studios, it's an interesting set
- 32:58up. It's like a multi level piece of
- 33:01land. So the first part of the park is
- 33:05at a certain level and then everything else you have to take
- 33:08either escalators or elevators down to the other part of the
- 33:12park. So it's on a multi level and
- 33:16then you've got all the sound stages and you've got the Jaws
- 33:19experience and all that sort of stuff.
- 33:21But anyway, if you picture this, imagine these escalators that
- 33:25are going down and it's multiple escalators.
- 33:27It's not one. You kind of go down one set, you
- 33:29walk along, go down the next set.
- 33:31Weaved in between these escalators is a roller coaster.
- 33:35And at the moment they were just sending test mules around it,
- 33:38but next year it's going to be open.
- 33:41And the theme is Fast and Furious.
- 33:43So in in essence, you're doing a roller coaster and it's not a
- 33:47fixed roller coaster. So what I mean by that is it
- 33:49pivots on its center axis. So in essence, drifting.
- 33:54Oh, the the actual cars that you ride in, yeah, drift you through
- 33:59the roller coaster, and I believe that'd.
- 34:00Be different themed cars. They've only shown that in like
- 34:04static images. These were all painted the same
- 34:06color, but so I think A-Team outing middle of 26 to Universal
- 34:12Studio where we we go do some drifting, evaluate.
- 34:15The drifting, yeah. We need to meet up with our new
- 34:18buddy Robert Nagle, and he can ride with us and then he can.
- 34:21There we go. The.
- 34:22Technique of the roller coasters and drifts, that's true.
- 34:26Escalators. Yeah, well, that's cool.
- 34:28So that reminds. Me of something I was going to
- 34:30ask you about Sema Dan, because I know Ryan had shared that part
- 34:33of his experience was he had the IT sounds like it's like the
- 34:37Vegas version of Monaco where instead of being right on top of
- 34:40the racetrack, he was right on top of the drifting in his
- 34:43hotel. So was that your experience too,
- 34:46Dan? Because we had wasn't and I.
- 34:48Think that's because so Ryan, I think you're a Marriott guy,
- 34:52aren't you? Yeah, Yeah.
- 34:54So there was a Marriott right next to the the tracks, and
- 34:58luckily I stayed in a place called the Westgate, which was
- 35:01kind of around the back. And it wasn't.
- 35:03But I think if I'd have stayed in the Mario, I would have had
- 35:05that same experience. Yeah.
- 35:07Yeah, it drove us to drink, I'll be honest.
- 35:09I mean. Any excuse?
- 35:11Come on. Yeah, I know.
- 35:15We weren't sure. Right.
- 35:17Yeah. It gave you good cover.
- 35:19Yeah, I know. Well, I'm.
- 35:21I'm glad that you did not have that experience, Dan.
- 35:23And maybe that explains a little bit also why your experience was
- 35:27more positive than Ryan's and Ryan, now you know where to stay
- 35:30when you go back. That's right.
- 35:31So that you can have you can get yourself a break from the
- 35:35drifting without having to go into the boring tunnel.
- 35:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:40I know. Well, Speaking of the boring
- 35:43tunnel, Tesla has started to do car rentals for $60.00 a day.
- 35:48So are they renting them? Do you guys know they're renting
- 35:51them directly to consumers? Are they giving them to car
- 35:54rental companies? Do we know?
- 35:56Well, that didn't work. Speaking of Hertz, right?
- 36:01I saw an article. In the New York Times and
- 36:05apparently there's a wider issue going on right now where
- 36:07electric cars aren't selling. Obviously September was tariffs.
- 36:13So I don't know whether this is a longer term strategy, but
- 36:16Tesla have obviously got all this allocation of cars on their
- 36:20forecourts. So they've actually make them
- 36:23available so you can rent them for $60.00 a day.
- 36:27So as an alternative to Hertz or you know those other folks.
- 36:32And it's interesting because I wonder if this is something
- 36:34where they actually become a business model that car.
- 36:36Show is proud to partner with Drake Motor Cars.
- 36:40Drake Motorcars is Denver's premier destination for exactly

- 37:02But our friends at Drake need your speciality cart too.
- 37:04A sign of a good business is when there are more customers
- 37:07than inventory. So reach out to Drake too.
- 37:09If you've got a great enthusiast car that just doesn't get driven
- 37:12like it used to. Find out more at
- 37:15drakemotorcars.com and let them know you heard about them on
- 37:18that car show. Because it is the perfect rental
- 37:22car for most situations. Unless you're driving across the
- 37:25country or something. It's that's what a Tesla is
- 37:28great for. You fly into LAX and get a Tesla
- 37:30and you go and it's exactly the car you want when you drive
- 37:33around LA and you look like. Everybody else, yeah.
- 37:38I I got in a a lift last night. We had it's the Rocky Rocky
- 37:43Mountain automotive press had a gathering at brews beers not too
- 37:47far. I didn't want to drive and so I
- 37:49I got a lift and I think I must have been the first passenger
- 37:54ever in this lift car was a brand new Tesla Model 3 with the
- 37:57white seats. And I'm thinking, that's how I
- 38:01knew it was new, right? Until.
- 38:04They were white. And it was a pretty good
- 38:06experience. It was, I hadn't been the last
- 38:09couple rental, you know, Tesla's I'd had were beaten.
- 38:11They had like 60,000 miles because I don't think they're
- 38:13replacing them. But this was a brand new model.
- 38:16It was really, really nice, a great experience until the guy
- 38:18went the wrong way down a one way street.
- 38:20I never started honking at us and I snapped to attention and
- 38:23and but a nice enough vehicle. But that's your point, Dean, I
- 38:27think, you know, everyone's hurting and you know, I think we
- 38:31all saw this article about Polestar.
- 38:33Polestar just did a stock split to boost the value of the stock
- 38:38and now the stock is at $0.22. Well, and they did that.
- 38:43Like, yeah, it that's a reverse stock.
- 38:45Split. That's what it was.
- 38:46Not the way. You want to go that's.
- 38:48What it was, what it was never a good.
- 38:51Sign go buy your. Pole star stock while you you
- 38:54can. I, I don't know, you know, when
- 38:55our lease is up in July or whatever, what we're going to
- 38:57do, where we're going to go right from here because we
- 38:59really like the thing. And yeah, and I'll, I'll, I'll,
- 39:03I'll, you know, go to my grave saying that I think for most
- 39:05people in most places and electric is the is the superior
- 39:09daily driver drivetrain. I just don't see us going back
- 39:12to a, you know, and I see car for daily duties.
- 39:16Yeah. So I don't know where we'll go
- 39:17from from here. Well, and this is.
- 39:19Your family's first EV correct it is it.
- 39:21Is, yeah. Can I just say that the that car
- 39:25show are not financial experts and no advice should be taken on
- 39:30stocks to buy or sell with our insight please you could you
- 39:34could buy. Thousands of shares and and
- 39:36feel. But what if it goes to $0.11?
- 39:40But. Yeah, you.
- 39:43Know it's. Well, it's, I mean, it's, I
- 39:47don't, I don't know off the top of my head if there has been a
- 39:50company that has been saved by a reverse stock split.
- 39:53But it is, you know, they don't, they don't do that without being
- 39:57under duress a bit. And it's.
- 39:59Writing's on the wall and it's too bad because it's a great
- 40:02product. I, I really do believe it's a
- 40:04great product. You know the the whole *2 that
- 40:06we had was built in China and so obviously we know, you know how
- 40:09that's all playing out and why they stopped selling them.
- 40:11But of course there's the model 3 and the other one caught the
- 40:13Model 3, but the pole *3 rather and then the four and I think
- 40:17A5. So I mean, they have great
- 40:18products in the pipeline. And I think, you know, pole
- 40:20Star's a fantastic alternative if you would, you know, if you
- 40:24you'd be driving a Volvo, but you want to drive electric,
- 40:26right? I mean, you're not a Tesla
- 40:27person, right? I think a pole star's a great
- 40:29car. So, you know, it'd be really
- 40:32kind of sad if they go away in the USI think they'd be they'd
- 40:36continue to be sold elsewhere in the in the country.
- 40:37But I don't know. It's.
- 40:40Didn't you write an? Article about SO they're one of
- 40:42the only companies that are doing a roadster, so maybe that
- 40:45gets shelved. Yeah, well, Tesla was also doing
- 40:49a Roadster. But you.
- 40:51Right, get to see that. No, I know.
- 40:53And it's a beautiful thing, right?
- 40:54It's a it's a, it's AI think a coupe and A and a roadster and
- 40:58it's a fantastic looking car. It's one of those few cars that,
- 41:01you know, if everything goes as planned, it's going to look just
- 41:03like the the production car is going to look a lot like the
- 41:05concept car. So think like, you know, when
- 41:08the Audi TT came out and like, oh damn, that actually looks
- 41:10quite a lot like the, you know, the concept car or the original
- 41:13boxed or whatever. And this is a car that really
- 41:15does look exceptional and I think will will stay true to the
- 41:17concept, but we'll see. You know, I mean, it's, it's
- 41:20also a $200,000 car. So I don't think, I don't think
- 41:23any lease deal is going to be good enough to put that in my
- 41:26garage. But well, it's not.
- 41:28Really a family. It's not really a family car.
- 41:31So you're off the hook for a few years in terms of, like, Ryan,
- 41:34why haven't you put your money where your mouth is?
- 41:36Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 41:38Exactly. Yeah, I don't know.
- 41:39And maybe if the company goes, you know, goes out of business,
- 41:42at least here in the States, you know, maybe we'll be able to
- 41:44keep the car very, very inexpensively, too.
- 41:46And maybe we'll have this pole star for a long time.
- 41:48We'll be able to service the damn thing.
- 41:51I'll be up poking at it with a Phillips head screwdriver up on
- 41:53my left trying to get electric the next.
- 41:57Ocean. Where do we take it though?
- 41:58Oh. Bad.
- 41:59Well, hopefully that did you see who's the guy that does that?
- 42:03Rich rebuilds on YouTube. He just got a free Fisker Ocean.
- 42:08Was able to fix it with a new key for 20 bucks.
- 42:10At least that's the click baity title.
- 42:12Whatever. Would you take a free Fisker
- 42:14Ocean either of you? Yes.
- 42:16Free. OK, yes.
- 42:18If it's free, yeah, because I think I would.
- 42:21And sorry, Lindsay, go on. No, I mean.
- 42:23I feel like that's one of those things where if it's free,
- 42:25obviously you pay insurance and that kind of thing and like for
- 42:29as long as it runs. And if you know, ideally,
- 42:32obviously if something happens, you're able to figure out some
- 42:34kind of a solution for a fair amount of time.
- 42:37But I think that's one of those things that you just do for the
- 42:40sake of the plot. You're like, wait, you're going
- 42:41to give me a fester ocean, right?
- 42:43That's all I get. One right like.
- 42:45For the podcast, for my life, you're just like, that's one of
- 42:48those stories of like, yeah, somebody handed me this car.
- 42:50So here we are. Like, why would you say no
- 42:53really? Because if it, if it breaks and
- 42:55it's unrecoverable, like, OK, you didn't pay for it.
- 42:58It's not like you're losing a bunch of money.
- 43:00And you got to enjoy it for as long as you got to enjoy it.
- 43:04And you know, the whole history story, like is such an up and
- 43:08down story. And you get to be a tiny part of
- 43:10it and enjoy one of their products for as long as it
- 43:12works. So.
- 43:14But yeah. So, Dan, what would you say I
- 43:16was? Saying I think you'd strip it
- 43:17for spares and put them all on eBay.
- 43:19Well. People are going to need them.
- 43:22Yeah, or you could. Turn the seats into like a desk
- 43:25or a sofa or something. Oh, that's true, Upcycle.
- 43:29It Yeah. Yeah, so.
- 43:31OK, so that's what I would do. I would take it, drive it for as
- 43:34long as it worked, then part it out and possibly create the
- 43:37world's first Fisker Ocean love seat.
- 43:42That's what I wouldn't feel bad about.
- 43:44I always, like, cry a little bit on the inside whenever I see,
- 43:46like, a really good car that's turned into one of those, right,
- 43:49You know? Yeah.
- 43:50Or like something that's rare. There aren't that many examples.
- 43:53And you're like, oh, you cut it in half to make yeah.
- 43:56Crimean Ocean. Exactly.
- 44:00Yeah. Well, so Dan, you mentioned that
- 44:04you had seen an interesting Top Gear episode since we last all
- 44:07were together. And I wondered if you could
- 44:09share a little bit about that, because I'm very curious what
- 44:12the result was, who was the winner.
- 44:14So take it away. Yeah, this.
- 44:16Was kind of, I guess on the back of it sounds like some of our
- 44:20friends in England may be doing an SUV who have never done an
- 44:23SUV before. I'm talking about the Formula
- 44:26One world champions. And apparently next year is
- 44:30there's an SUV coming. It's going to be a hybrid.
- 44:33But that led me down a bit of a rabbit hole.
- 44:35And Tom Ford, who is a famous Top Gear presenter, he did a
- 44:42video to be. Confused with the designer, Tom
- 44:43Ford. That's right, the guy who makes.
- 44:45The handbags. It's not the handbags Tom Ford.
- 44:48It's the other Tom Ford whose nickname is Wookie, which is
- 44:51super weird because when you get emails from him that just says
- 44:53Wooks and you're like, how do I respond to that, dear Mr. Wooks?
- 44:58But yeah, he took a Ferrari Pro Sangui and he took an Aston
- 45:05Martin DBXS. So the DBXS is the newest Aston
- 45:09Martin, which basically is quicker than the seven O 7.
- 45:13So it's up from the seven O 7 in terms of power and stuff.
- 45:17And he went to the UK's narrowest and steepest road and
- 45:23pitted them against each other. And I would encourage everyone
- 45:27to watch the video, so I won't give too much away.
- 45:30But the interesting things for me were the Ferrari has a
- 45:33suspension from Multimatic. Now, if you guys are familiar
- 45:37with Multimatic, what else have they worked on they.
- 45:41Worked on the Mustang GTD, yes. So it's interesting that the
- 45:47Italians are now working with the Canadians to get the best
- 45:51possible suspension. But he was raving about that.
- 45:56He was less raving about the options list on the Ferrari
- 46:00because I think there was something like $135,000 of
- 46:03options. Yeah.
- 46:04And that's. Just obscene.
- 46:06I mean I. Get it was a press car, but and
- 46:10then he was raving about the usability of the the Aston, you
- 46:14know, the fact he's got a decent sized trunk.
- 46:16Watch the video because the Ferrari does a really cool thing
- 46:19with his back seats. So if you want to put the back
- 46:22seats down, you can. But it looks really cool and
- 46:26watch the video for the net result.
- 46:27But yeah, I think McLaren if they go into that market.
- 46:31Oh, I've said it. Whoops, McLaren.
- 46:33If they go into that market, then they've got some very stiff
- 46:36competition to go up against just well and that.
- 46:39Yeah, like you said, they've announced their models for the
- 46:42next few years I think and one of them is going to be a 4 door
- 46:46sedan. Is it so?
- 46:48Which McLaren? I thought it was an SUV.
- 46:53Oh, is it? OK. 4 door SUV.
- 46:55So yeah, either way, I think the question stands either way,
- 46:59would either of you be interested in A4 door McLaren
- 47:03sedan or a four door McLaren SUV?
- 47:06Ryan, what do you think? No, not.
- 47:08Really, not really. I love McLaren.
- 47:11I, I, you know, I love their cars, you know, don't know if
- 47:15I'd buy one of the sports cars either, but we need to create a.
- 47:18List don't we have things that is better to have a friend owned
- 47:22than we own? There you go.
- 47:23Boats. We've got SUV's, we've got
- 47:25Mclarens. Yeah, right.
- 47:26What's a? Brendan.
- 47:30Right, an off road vehicle about McLaren.
- 47:34Yeah, we'll just keep it's a, it's a living document.
- 47:37We'll just keep adding to the list.
- 47:39Yeah. But Dan, what do you think?
- 47:41Would you be interested in a McLaren SUV?
- 47:45I, I, I would love, I've never driven A McLaren.
- 47:47I'd love to drive a McLaren. You know that everyone raves
- 47:50about the driving. I hope that the build qualities
- 47:53got better because I think early on, like it used to be, I don't
- 47:56think it's the case anymore. It used to be that there was a
- 47:59stat that said that McLaren customers less than 5% bought a
- 48:04second McLaren. Really.
- 48:06That's that's I mean I. Do I feel that's wild?
- 48:11Wow. But I.
- 48:12Think that's got better like 7%, right?
- 48:15I don't know the I don't know the numbers, but I think the
- 48:17qualities got better 6. Seven.
- 48:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's a 50% gap.
- 48:22Daughter's cringing. From across the house, Yeah,
- 48:24let's say Ryan. You're so hip.
- 48:26See, we can hang with the young people.
- 48:29Pretty sad, isn't it? Yeah.
- 48:31Oh man. Yeah, would you?
- 48:32Guys, you, you just know it's a no and it would.
- 48:35Not with my own money. I'd take one, you know.
- 48:38Right Again. At NF Fisker.
- 48:39Ocean. Yeah, I was going.
- 48:40To say this is that's our other living list is like, what would
- 48:44you take if somebody's handing you a free 1?
- 48:45Sure. McLaren SUV Fisker Ocean not
- 48:48drawing. Any analogues just for the
- 48:51recording? No, Yeah, the IT will.
- 48:53And it sounds like it's since it's a list of two, it's which
- 48:57SU VS would you accept if someone is handing them to you?
- 49:00Those are the 2. But Speaking of twos, I have
- 49:04been having a funny experience since car week.
- 49:07And I don't know if this has happened to you guys but I find
- 49:09myself I'm moving through the world with sort of like 2 car
- 49:13solution colored glasses on unexpectedly.
- 49:16And it started at the zinger party at car week when I
- 49:21happened to go out to the car park and Matt Farah's beautiful
- 49:26Myers Banks was out there, the beautiful blue right next to AGT
- 49:3040 that was almost a matching blue.
- 49:33And I went, Oh my gosh, that would be a really funny 2 car
- 49:36solution. Like what if that was your
- 49:38garage? What would that look like?
- 49:40What would that feel like? And ever since then I've started
- 49:43to see pairs of cars together and I'm like, well, that's an
- 49:45interesting 2 car solution because I feel like that's
- 49:49that's such a catch all in the car community as everybody goes
- 49:51like, OK, but what's your two car solution?
- 49:54So I wanted to start with Dan, what is your like in a perfect
- 49:59world, what is your ideal 2 car solution?
- 50:02And then are there any funny ones that you've seen when
- 50:04you're out and about lately? Yeah, I.
- 50:07Think 2 car solution is something for the weekend is
- 50:10something for the week, yeah so maybe a singer for the weekend
- 50:150. There we go.
- 50:17I think I want to say McLaren F1, so maybe a Stinger for the
- 50:20week and a McLaren F1 for the weekend, right?
- 50:23Well, that's along the lines of like a Myers Max and AGT 40.
- 50:26It's like, yeah, hey, it doesn't have to be practical.
- 50:30It has to be fun and you have to love it.
- 50:31So I love that idea. And so have you seen any funny
- 50:36pairings out and about? What was?
- 50:39I'm just trying to think what was on the stands.
- 50:40So I went to one of the detail companies stands and they had an
- 50:45S2000 from Fast and Furious and then they had a busy Moto 935
- 50:51Electric that was on the Sonic stand.
- 50:55So that would be a very cool 2 car solution.
- 50:58Yeah, it would. That would be really unique.
- 51:00I know I think it's interesting because you go OK, could you do
- 51:03daily life if you had these two things?
- 51:06What would that look like and I mean I'm game to find out, you
- 51:11know. So Ryan, what's your ideal 2 car
- 51:14solution and have you seen any funny pairings lately?
- 51:17Yeah, you. Know let's do a A2 door cabrio G
- 51:22wagon like Doug Demiro Oh yeah and GT3 touring that's that
- 51:28would be really all I would need those two cars special if I was
- 51:32living in some wonderful place like Southern California.
- 51:34I think that'd be kind of ideal funny 2 pairing cars.
- 51:39There is someone in the neighborhood that has like an
- 51:41old like a a 47 Chevy pickup truck and also has a 930 turbo.
- 51:50And those are the only two cars I've ever seen at that house.
- 51:53And yeah, yeah, one of them gets St. parked.
- 51:56The other gets parked under a portico.
- 51:58I'm not quite sure what's in the garage, but those are the only
- 52:01two cars I've seen. And he seems to be or she seems
- 52:04to be doing OK with those too. So I love.
- 52:07That the 9:30. Has a handicap placard on it
- 52:10too, so wow. So we have.
- 52:12So many questions, I know I. You need to become friends with
- 52:17that guy. Poor lady, I didn't.
- 52:19Want to say it right? You're like.
- 52:23Car occasionally, that's right, that's right.
- 52:25Yeah, yeah, as a matter. Of fact, and it's me walking
- 52:28back and forth in front of your house.
- 52:31Yeah. Well, those are both.
- 52:34Really good combos, Yeah, I think so.
- 52:36What are you? So the one I saw another one
- 52:39today and this is what reminded me of kind of I keep seeing
- 52:42these pairings. The one I saw this morning was
- 52:45an ID buzz and then a 718 boxer S and I was like, well, those
- 52:49are like again, could be A and really either of those could be
- 52:53the weekend car or the daily. So you could you could live a
- 52:56lot of life with those two. And then I actually saw a Nissan
- 53:02Murano convertible in this beautiful sort of like sea green
- 53:06metallic Unicorn color where I was just like, this is amazing.
- 53:10And there was a replica vintage MG right next to it.
- 53:13And I'm like, all right, what would life look like if that was
- 53:16your garage? Yeah.
- 53:17Yeah, yeah. So there's some, you know, and
- 53:20then I saw a Saturn Vue and Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra Park
- 53:24together in a driveway the other day, and I was like, boy, that's
- 53:27a blast from the past that. Was a good two car solution for
- 53:31someone at one time. Yeah, right.
- 53:33And. It's again, you look like your
- 53:35neighbor with the questions. I'm like that was A2 car
- 53:38solution of a certain time period and it is currently for
- 53:40these people. So, you know, also interesting,
- 53:43there's a whole new. Bingo game you can create that's
- 53:46so you pull together all those combos and the kids are in the
- 53:49car for hours trying to find the combos.
- 53:51Yes, yes. Porsche car bingo, right.
- 53:54There's a 924 S, right? I mean, you know, I never
- 53:57thought I'd see one of those, right?
- 53:59Yeah. Then in the center square,
- 54:00you've got a, a GT3 because those are everywhere now, right?
- 54:04You know, but. That's how you win.
- 54:06They're like. Yeah, so.
- 54:09I know well and I think, but I think my favorite actually is
- 54:12one that I didn't see but someone sent to me.
- 54:16There was a high performance driving event out of Willow
- 54:18Springs last weekend and I got a picture from the hotel parking
- 54:22lot in the morning and it was these two and I think they're
- 54:25like 90s era single cab lowered short bed Chevy pickups, both in
- 54:32insanely bright pink, different pinks parked right next to each.
- 54:39I mean, commit to the bit right? Like the Barbie lifestyle.
- 54:43So anyway, so it's it kind of makes your drives interesting as
- 54:48you're, you know, going through your day, you go like, all
- 54:51right, what if that was my garage?
- 54:52And it's sort of, you know, we're all out and about and it
- 54:55sort of adds a little fun to your drives, even if it's just,
- 54:59you know, running errands. But I thought it was really fun
- 55:02the other day when we did the hopped in the DeLorean for a
- 55:05little time capsule action. We stole the DeLorean.
- 55:08Didn't we? We did, but we kept our ability
- 55:13to time travel, apparently. So this week I thought we could
- 55:17chat about a brand that is near and dear to my heart.
- 55:21Ford, of course. So same premise.
- 55:25Right. For those of us just tuning in
- 55:27now, so the premise is if you could go back to any time period
- 55:32in the Ford manufacturing, you know all of the products, where
- 55:37would you go? Like what do you feel like is
- 55:39peak Ford? And Ryan, I would love to hear
- 55:42your answer first. Well, Lindsay, asking me about
- 55:46my favorite Ford year is a little like asking me about ham
- 55:50radios or my favorite Harry Potter book, because I have no
- 55:54real experience with any of these things.
- 55:56I didn't grow up with Fords. I've never owned a Ford.
- 56:00I don't know that I ever will own a Ford.
- 56:03That's shots fired. Huh.
- 56:06That said, I love me a Ford GT of any vintage.
- 56:10I think 2005 would be a really Goodyear to go back in time and
- 56:14pick one of those up when they were being sold at a discount.
- 56:17And I do have a thing for the 5.0 LX Fox body Mustangs.
- 56:22Give me a final year, you know, Fox body LX trim, cloth seats,
- 56:27manual. That'd be pretty fantastic. 65
- 56:32GT 350 would be fantastic, right?
- 56:35I mean, these are just so good. I think those are, that's a car
- 56:37that transcends, right? You know, find me a Porsche
- 56:40person who doesn't like one of those.
- 56:41They're just so good. But for someone who's not a Ford
- 56:45guy, and I should say I have absolutely nothing against
- 56:48Fords. I just don't have any experience
- 56:51with them. I guess.
- 56:53Take me at 88 miles an hour to 1992, because when I think of
- 56:58Ford, it's the Ford lineup from that era that just says Ford to
- 57:04me. So some highlights of 1992 or
- 57:06the aforementioned Fox bodies. I think 93 was the last year of
- 57:09those, right? They're trying to transition
- 57:11into that next Gen. You could also get the new Crown
- 57:16Victoria, a car that was made for 20 goddamn years and one
- 57:20that you can still occasionally see in police fleets, especially
- 57:22in California, right? Thirteen years after the last
- 57:26one rolled off the assembly line.
- 57:28You could get the Aerostar that year.
- 57:30Oh, AKA the space shuttle on wheels.
- 57:34You can get the big boy Bronco too.
- 57:36I think that was the fifth generation that had just come
- 57:38out that year, right? 82 The F series was at the top
- 57:42of its game. It was still something the
- 57:45Marlboro Man would drive, right? I mean, it just had that sort of
- 57:48vibe. The OG probe, right?
- 57:51Not the Mazda probe. In there.
- 57:54Yeah, I mean, I guess they were both Mozzworth, that was right
- 57:56there. I think that came on 88 or 89.
- 57:58So that was still lurking around, tempting the
- 58:00Appalachian, uh, enthusiasts on a budget.
- 58:02I guess what else was? Well, there was a.
- 58:05Taurus, the Taurus the show. The SHO, right?
- 58:08Yeah. And that was the facelifted one,
- 58:09like Conan O'Brien drove, you know, used to drive, right?
- 58:13The Tempo was a car that was available.
- 58:15It was 92, the Tempo. Was also there, yeah.
- 58:20The Thunderbird, the personal luxury car.
- 58:23Yeah. And you know what?
- 58:24All of these models shared one thing in common.
- 58:27It was that same stupid little Ford radio with a little chiclet
- 58:29buttons. Every single one of those cars
- 58:31had the same radio. So I think that's why in 1992 is
- 58:36peak Ford for me. There we go.
- 58:38That's. An amazing answer.
- 58:39Yeah, Dan, you're up next door. Actually it's it's two years
- 58:45later. So he's kind of 90. 4:00-ish
- 58:50This is peak Clarkson. Clarkson is still quite young
- 58:54looking and he's got this massive bouffant of big hair and
- 58:58Ford have given him for a year a Ford Escort Cosworth.
- 59:05See, you had. A different we did.
- 59:07We had. Different Fords in the UK, which
- 59:09is why I think I've got more of a love than maybe you have, Ryan
- 59:12and the Mark. So we had in the 80s you had
- 59:16Group B which was, you know, all about, you know, whatever the
- 59:20rules were, you would interpret them to whatever.
- 59:22And the RS200 came. But then when the Coswith the
- 59:25escort Coswith came, it wasn't even an escort, it was a Sierra
- 59:29because they had to take the body length and make it an
- 59:32all-wheel drive car for rallying at Group A.
- 59:34So you know, so this was a this was a beautiful little car with
- 59:40a big spoiler on the back. You know, it had all-wheel
- 59:43drive. It had a, you know, legendary
- 59:45Cosworth badge on the back and you'd have it in like a Mallard
- 59:49green or something like that. So that would be for me, that
- 59:53would be peak. And I think they they started in
- 59:5692, but 94 was when they kind of got to perfection.
- 1:00:00Interesting. Yeah, that's a good.
- 1:00:04I mean, I was thinking it's interesting that you both went
- 1:00:06very similar time periods, but such different answers and such
- 1:00:10different, you know, experiences with the brand because of
- 1:00:13growing up in different countries.
- 1:00:16And Lindsay, you grew. Up with Ford.
- 1:00:18So this is going to this is the this is the answer I'm really
- 1:00:20curious about because, you know, Ford tattoo.
- 1:00:24Act. That's right.
- 1:00:26I really went back and forth because of like I've had
- 1:00:31personal experience with so many different models of the brand,
- 1:00:34but I kind of went back to my perspective on the Porsche
- 1:00:38answer with picking kind of an epic moment in the brand's
- 1:00:42history. And so I would want to go back
- 1:00:46to like the Shelby era of for so the mid 60s, you know, 646566
- 1:00:54when that program was coming together with the Mustangs and
- 1:00:58the Cobras. And I realized, you know, you
- 1:01:00could the purists would argue that might not be, you could
- 1:01:03argue it's not Ford. But listen, it was integral to
- 1:01:07the program. They were working together
- 1:01:09closely at that point. And I feel like there were so
- 1:01:13many historical moments, like, you know, we were just talking
- 1:01:16to Robert Nagle about the Lamar races where they raced the Ford,
- 1:01:19the GT 40s. And like, I feel like that era
- 1:01:23of the company, you still like, there's so many stories that
- 1:01:27came out of that. So many prominent figures in
- 1:01:30automotive like Pete Brock and Ken Miles and Carroll Shelby and
- 1:01:34all of that was like, you know, there's just so many stories and
- 1:01:39big moments and like really shaped the history of the
- 1:01:43company, even to the point like when I was at the GTD reveal a
- 1:01:47couple years ago when Jim Farley was introducing the car, he
- 1:01:51talked about even in 2023, he said, we're turning away from
- 1:01:56Shelby. But it's not like we still love
- 1:01:59Shelby. And that's been such a part of
- 1:02:01the company. This is a new direction from us
- 1:02:03that we're really excited about. And yeah, that's not about
- 1:02:06Shelby, but also he's still in the discussion or those cars are
- 1:02:10still in the discussion even now.
- 1:02:11So I think it would be really, really interesting to get an in
- 1:02:17person window into what that time period was like and you
- 1:02:22know, all of those discussions and be there when those cars
- 1:02:25were being developed so. So surprising.
- 1:02:28No one. That's my answer, no.
- 1:02:30That's a great answer. I, I, I, I think I've seen a
- 1:02:32picture of like a transporter, like a race transporter from
- 1:02:35that era just filled with all those great cars, right?
- 1:02:38And just I want to go back and just drive that whole thing.
- 1:02:42So I'm pretty sure one of our family friends drove that
- 1:02:44transporter, of course. That's awesome.
- 1:02:47Yeah, we. Have a good family friend who
- 1:02:49his job. He was one of the original
- 1:02:51Shelby employees and ultimately he was hired to do, and I don't
- 1:02:57know, I think it was AI may be miss speaking, but I think it
- 1:03:00was a type of a publicity tour. And he drove the big rigs and
- 1:03:03they transported the cars around the US and there were I think
- 1:03:08maybe 3 big rigs that did that, but he was one of them.
- 1:03:11And yeah, that's, I think all, you know, all those guys have
- 1:03:15such amazing stories. So to get to to get to be in
- 1:03:19that moment for a little bit would be pretty epic.
- 1:03:23Yeah, yeah. Was died.
- 1:03:24In the wool Ford person, we blew all that.
- 1:03:27I think you couldn't have chosen another year really, right?
- 1:03:31Right. I.
- 1:03:32Know I was like OK do I go back to 85 because that's when the
- 1:03:36Bronco that I learned to drive was made.
- 1:03:39It was much older when I learned to drive in it, obviously for
- 1:03:42those trying to do the math. But anyway, that's neither here
- 1:03:46nor there. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:47Yeah, a little disappointed neither one of you said nineteen
- 1:03:49O 8 when the Model T was brought to the market.
- 1:03:52We didn't want to. Steal your Thunder because we
- 1:03:54thought considering you share the same birthday right, we were
- 1:03:59helping. You'd share some personal
- 1:04:00stories from the time, but you came up with a model.
- 1:04:02Eight kids, you know, by the way, happy birthday, Dan.
- 1:04:06I think it was just your birthday.
- 1:04:09I think you were. I think you might be, too.
- 1:04:12What rotations around the sun? Oh, behind you I'm yes, getting
- 1:04:18closer towards Ryan's age and nowhere near Lindsay, but the
- 1:04:22right that's. That's the best part about
- 1:04:23aging, right? You never catch up, right?
- 1:04:25You're out. No, you're.
- 1:04:27Like I'm just going to pause here and wait for you guys.
- 1:04:29That's. Right, I think you get
- 1:04:30backwards. After 30, don't you?
- 1:04:32That's right. That's right.
- 1:04:33Yeah, that's right. I mean, that's what.
- 1:04:34I'm doing. I for it's worth that I don't
- 1:04:38see any white and you were your beard stubble there so I think
- 1:04:41you're there we go yeah it's. Amazing.
- 1:04:43You might. Be giving a bit.
- 1:04:44Isn't it? Yeah.
- 1:04:45Yeah, exactly. That British?
- 1:04:47Constitution. Yeah, but we hope you had an
- 1:04:51amazing birthday. Yeah, and thank you very much.
- 1:04:53That was Universal Studios, Yeah, that's.
- 1:04:56I mean, that's a good way to celebrate, absolutely.
- 1:04:58But yeah, I mean, I think I think that's that's it for this
- 1:05:03week. You guys, unless we have any
- 1:05:04other pressing topics that have I'm.
- 1:05:07Excited about next week? Yeah, I know.
- 1:05:11We have the auto show coming up and we get to see each other in
- 1:05:14person. We in LA.
- 1:05:18If you're at the show, come say hello.
- 1:05:21That's right. We'll be there on the Thursday,
- 1:05:22which is the press day. We'll be joined by our good
- 1:05:26friend Jorge Aquino. We'll also be joined by Michael
- 1:05:30Lasasso, who is the the business behind this podcast and doesn't
- 1:05:35always get the the front of house, you know, but he'll be
- 1:05:39with us as well. So it should be a it should be a
- 1:05:41great a great few days, shouldn't it?
- 1:05:43Yeah, it would be a. Lot of fun.
- 1:05:45And I've been promised a delicious Mexican meal, so.
- 1:05:50Dan, are you? Recommended it because I haven't
- 1:05:52I was going. To say, are you cooking, Dan?
- 1:05:55El Taco Bello or something. Which you've never.
- 1:05:59Actually eaten. If my memory serves me, I'll.
- 1:06:02Never have a Taco Bell. And if I ever do have a Taco
- 1:06:05Bell, it's the one just outside San Francisco because there's
- 1:06:08one on the beach. Oh.
- 1:06:11Cantina. Just to the West of San
- 1:06:14Francisco. Yeah, I.
- 1:06:16Think they serve alcohol? They.
- 1:06:17Still have one of the cantinas is still open.
- 1:06:20I think so, and that's the only Taco Bell I'll ever have.
- 1:06:24Well, I mean, authentic it's not, but, you know, it is part
- 1:06:28of the fabric of Southern California.
- 1:06:30Yeah. Crab beef came right from the
- 1:06:31ocean, yeah. The triangle of of cuisine.
- 1:06:37You can either have it authentic, cheap, or convenient.
- 1:06:40But you can't have all three, no?
- 1:06:42Yeah, exactly. Well, for all of us here at that
- 1:06:47car show, thank you so much for joining us this week and thank
- 1:06:49you guys. It was great to be all together
- 1:06:52as a crew. And yeah, so thank you to all of
- 1:06:56our listeners. Drop us a line and let Ryan know
- 1:06:58if there are any spots that he needs to stop on his road trip
- 1:07:01to take pictures with the Genesis.
- 1:07:04Let us know what the snarkier the better.
- 1:07:06Right. Yeah, the weirder the the more
- 1:07:09Ryan's daughter will roll her eyes.
- 1:07:11Those are the suggestions we're looking for.
