- 0:02Pod. Today will journey through the
- 0:05captivating saga of Mars 1, the ambitious venture that aimed to
- 0:09make humans and interplanetary species by establishing a
- 0:12permanent settlement on Mars. In the glow of this plan, the
- 0:17Dutch Notforprofit foundation launched by Boz Landsdorp and
- 0:21Arna Wielders shone brightly. When it first took to the world
- 0:24stage in 2011, their vision was nothing short of bold.
- 0:28A Oneway mission to Mars, sidestepping the complexities of
- 0:32a return voyage focusing on establishing A sustainable human
- 0:35colony on our neighboring planet.
- 0:38However, the path to Mars was strewn with obstacles.
- 0:41From an overwhelming financial goal of $6 billion to
- 0:45technological challenges and ethically charged decisions.
- 0:48Mars One face significant headwinds and despite their
- 0:52groundbreaking approach to space exploration, their mission, much
- 0:55like a Martian dust storm, eventually settled.
- 0:58In 2019, Mars One declared bankruptcy, leaving the dream of
- 1:03a permanent human settlement on Mars unfulfilled.
- 1:06But every story, every venture, every dream, regardless of its
- 1:10outcome, leaves behind a legacy. So today we dive into the rise
- 1:15and fall of Mars One, exploring the lessons learned and
- 1:19discussing how these experiences might influence the future.
- 1:23Of our multiplanetary aspirations, we'll hear from our

- 1:33Dutch entrepreneurs, Boss Land Store and Arna Wielders, both
- 1:38bringing unique experiences and skills to this venture.
- 1:41Boss is an entrepreneur with a background in mechanical
- 1:44engineering. And before Mars One, he
- 1:46cofounded Ampics Power, a company specializing in the
- 1:49development of wind energy technology.
- 1:52Landsdorp left Ampics Power to start Mars One when he realized
- 1:55the potential and feasibility of a one way mission to Mars.
- 2:00As a CEO and cofounder of Mars One, Landsdorp became the face
- 2:04of the project, frequently speaking at conferences and in
- 2:07media interviews about the mission.
- 2:09Our nose wielder is a physicist and engineer with experience in
- 2:13space systems. And before cofounding Mars One,
- 2:16Wielders worked for various space organizations.
- 2:19He worked at the European Space Research and Technology Center,
- 2:22part of the European Space Agency, or ESA, or ESA, and was
- 2:26involved in several ESA projects.
- 2:29He also cofounded Space Horizon, a company dedicated to space
- 2:32tourism. As the chief technical officer
- 2:34of Mars One, Wielders was responsible for the overall
- 2:38technical design and implementation of the Mars 1
- 2:41mission. And despite their passion and
- 2:43commitment to Mars One project, they have some hurdles to
- 2:46overcome. The venture was criticized and
- 2:48overly optimistic timelines, technology assumptions, and lack
- 2:53of adequate funding. Mars One was an ambitious
- 2:56project that sought to establish a permanent human settlement on
- 2:59Mars, a bold and audacious goal that pushed the boundaries of
- 3:03human possibility. And at the heart of the
- 3:06initiative was a vision to go where no human has gone before.
- 3:10To tread new ground in space exploration and to define what
- 3:13humanity could achieve in terms of interplanetary colonization.
- 3:18We'll explore the origins, the successes and challenges, and
- 3:21the legacy of Mars One will provide insights into the
- 3:24intricate nature of the space exploration venture.
- 3:28Mars One was a Dutch notforprofit foundation
- 3:30established in 2011 by Boslandsdorp and Arno Wielders.
- 3:34The company sought to revolutionize space exploration
- 3:37by pursuing A1 Way mission to Mars.
- 3:40They plan to select, train and send 4 astronauts on their
- 3:44pioneering journey every two years starting in the twenty 20s
- 3:49and the missions cost was estimated to be $6 billion.
- 3:53The founders aimed to source this funding from sponsors and
- 3:57media rights sales. Now, the underlying belief of
- 4:00the Mars 1 mission was that humanity needed to become a
- 4:03multiplanetary species like Elon, Musk says, both for our
- 4:07survival and to satisfy our innate curiosity and desire to
- 4:10explore. Mars, due to its proximity and
- 4:13its similarity to Earth in terms of day length and surface area,
- 4:17was chosen as the ideal destination for this ambitious
- 4:21undertaking. Mars One had a unique approach
- 4:24to this endeavor, though. They sought to simplify the
- 4:27mission by making it a one way trip, eliminating the need for
- 4:31complex return journey technology.
- 4:34By using existing technology and adopting an incremental
- 4:37approach, Mars 1 aimed to gradually build up the necessary
- 4:41infrastructure of Mars for long term human habitation.
- 4:45The project strategy consisted of sending initial unmanned
- 4:48missions, deploying living units, life support units and
- 4:52supply units to Mars. These units would then be set up
- 4:56by robots to create a habitable settlement before the arrival of
- 5:00the first crew. The crew would be
- 5:02self-sufficient, relying on in situ resource utilization or I
- 5:06SRU, particularly extracting water from Martian soil and
- 5:11producing oxygen for breathing. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
- 5:15That's exactly what Elon Musk wants to do with SpaceX and
- 5:19Starship. Now Mars One adopted an open
- 5:22call for volunteers. Willing to embark on a one way
- 5:26mission to Mars? You would leave Earth.
- 5:29You would fly to Mars. You would spend the rest of your
- 5:32days on Mars. You would never see anybody from
- 5:34Earth again. This unprecedented selection
- 5:37process attracted applicants from diverse backgrounds from
- 5:40around the world. After rigorous selection
- 5:42process, Mars One aim to train these individuals extensively in
- 5:47the simulated Martian environment right here on Earth.
- 5:50They prepare them for the harsh conditions and isolation.
- 5:54They would experience on Mars now.
- 5:55Despite its innovative approach and vision, Mars want to face
- 5:58significant challenges and criticisms.
- 6:01The foremost concern was the mission's feasibility given the
- 6:04technological, financial and logistical hurdles.
- 6:08Critics questioned whether the mission could be accomplished
- 6:10with the proposed budget and the reliance on unproven
- 6:13technologies like insitu resource utilization, making
- 6:19water out of Martian soil. Moreover, the ethical
- 6:22implications of sending humans on a one way mission raised
- 6:25concerns considering the psychological impact of
- 6:28permanent isolation at the potential of death on the Red
- 6:32Planet. The open call selection process
- 6:35and the proposal to televise the mission also face criticism for
- 6:39potentially exploiting the participants of reducing a
- 6:42complex science venture to just a reality show now despite these
- 6:47challenges and criticisms though.
- 6:49Mars One sparked a global conversation about space
- 6:52exploration and interplanetary colonization.
- 6:54It inspired individuals worldwide to dream about the
- 6:57possibilities of space travel and prompted serious discussions
- 7:00about the feasibility and ethics of colonizing other planets.
- 7:04When Mars One opened the application process for
- 7:07astronaut selection in April of 2013, they received a
- 7:10significant number of applications from aspiring Mars
- 7:13settlers around the globe by the end of the application process
- 7:17in August of 2013. Mars One reported having
- 7:20received over 200,000 applications, although this
- 7:24number was highly disputed and some sources suggest the actual
- 7:28number was quite lower. The application process was part
- 7:31of Mars One's fundraising strategy.
- 7:34Applicants were charged an application fee which varied by
- 7:37country, and the fee was intended to be inversely
- 7:40proportional to the gross domestic product of the
- 7:42applicants country, ranging from $5 to $75.
- 7:47The total amount of money raised from the application process
- 7:50isn't quite clear. Even if one took the lowest
- 7:54application fee of $5, if 200,000 applicants were indeed
- 7:58received, this would amount to at least $1,000,000 USD.
- 8:03However, due to the uncertainty about the actual number of
- 8:06applications and the variable application fee, it's difficult
- 8:10to provide a precise figure for the total funds raised through
- 8:13this process. These applications came from a
- 8:16wide variety of backgrounds and places, showcasing the global
- 8:19interest in space exploration in the appeal of the Mars 1 mission
- 8:24Now Sue and PN. An American applicant, Sue was
- 8:28one of the 100 finalists. She works as a software engineer
- 8:31and had a keen interest in space exploration.
- 8:34PN's motivation to apply for Mars One came from her dream to
- 8:37explore the unknown and to contribute to humanity's
- 8:40understanding of the universe. Ryan McDonald, The British
- 8:44physicist. McDonald was also among the 100
- 8:47finalists. He was studying physics at the
- 8:49University of Oxford at the time of his application and was
- 8:52fascinated by the prospect of contributing to human knowledge
- 8:55about Mars. He saw Mars One as an
- 8:57opportunity to be a part of the groundbreaking mission that can
- 9:00change how we understand our place in the universe.
- 9:03Diana Masani Patel, British pharmacist and scuba diving
- 9:06instructor, was another of the 100 finalists.
- 9:10She was motivated by a sense of adventure.
- 9:12And the desire to inspire the next generation of explorers.
- 9:16Now it's important to know that while these applicants were
- 9:18willing to leave their lives on Earth for a one way ticket to
- 9:21Mars, the Mars 1 mission faced significant criticism and
- 9:25skepticism over its feasibility, the ethics and lack of a clear
- 9:29plan for the safety and wellbeing of the crew.
- 9:32A glaring obstacle to Mars One's plans was the substantial
- 9:36financial requirements. The missions cost was estimated
- 9:40at a whopping $6 billion. And Mars won in to raise these
- 9:44funds through a mix of sponsorship, media rights,
- 9:47crowdfunding and private investments.
- 9:49However, is the mission progressed, it became evident
- 9:52that the organization was struggling to generate the
- 9:54necessary capital. The idea to fund a significant
- 9:58part of the mission through the sale of media rights, turning
- 10:00the astronaut selection process and subsequent life on Mars into
- 10:04a reality show, received a mixed reactions.
- 10:07But critics argued it trivialized the serious nature
- 10:09of space exploration and carried ethical implications.
- 10:13Meanwhile, potential sponsors and investors were hesitant.
- 10:16Aware of the high risks associated with the mission.
- 10:19The Mars 1 mission proposed to use rockets and spacecraft
- 10:22available commercially from established aerospace companies.
- 10:26This meant they didn't have to develop and build their own.
- 10:29Which would have been an immensely complex and expensive
- 10:32undertaking. In their initial plan, they
- 10:33proposed using the Falcon Heavy rocket manufactured by SpaceX to
- 10:37launch their payloads to Mars. Falcon Heavy is one of the most
- 10:41powerful operation rockets are in the world, capable of lifting
- 10:44significant payloads to Mars. For the actual spacecraft, they
- 10:48proposed using a modified version of Spacex's Dragon
- 10:51capsule. The Dragon capsule had already
- 10:54been used successfully to ferry cargo at this point.
- 10:58To and from the International Space Station, but there's been
- 11:01no cruise to the International Space Station when Mars One was
- 11:05in play. Now, it's important to note that
- 11:07while Mars One stated their intention to use these vehicles
- 11:11at the time of the missions cancellations, no contracts had
- 11:14been signed with NASA or SpaceX or any other aerospace
- 11:18companies. And for the missions, Lander and
- 11:20Rover Mars One partnered with Lockheed Martin, which had
- 11:24extensive experience in building and operating spacecraft.
- 11:28Or NASA's Mars missions. What are the more ambitious
- 11:31elements of the Mars One plant was a use of life support system
- 11:34to manufacture fuel on Mars for the use of vehicles and
- 11:38machinery which would have required an advanced level of in
- 11:41situ resource utilization technology.
- 11:43At the time of the missions proposal, such a system was
- 11:46still in the development phases and not yet proven.
- 11:50Now Mars 1 proposed to use existing technology in vehicles
- 11:52wherever possible. It also relied on several
- 11:55unproven technologies. Systems at the time, and its
- 11:58inability to fully address these technological challenges was a
- 12:01significant factor in the missions ultimate failure.
- 12:04Mars One hinged on the belief that it could only use existing
- 12:08technology to create a livable outpost on Mars.
- 12:11However, this overlooked the significant technological
- 12:14advances still required for such a mission, the dependency on as
- 12:19yet unproven technologies for longterm life support and
- 12:22radiation protection. Was a major concern.
- 12:25The timeline proposed by Mars One was also criticized as
- 12:29overly optimistic. The plan involves sending
- 12:31multiple uncrewed missions to set up a habitable environment
- 12:35and life support systems, all before humans sent foot on Mars.
- 12:39Now, this timeline, given the complexity of the tasks, seemed
- 12:43very farfetched, and sending humans on a oneway journey to
- 12:46Mars raised significant psychological and ethical
- 12:50issues. Mars One applicants were
- 12:52volunteering not just for an exploration mission, but for a
- 12:55lifetime on an alien planet. The potential psychological
- 12:59stress and the ethical implications of sending
- 13:02individuals on a journey with such high risks and no return
- 13:06raise serious concerns about the mission's moral standing.
- 13:09Human spaceflight to Mars presents unique psychological
- 13:13challenges. An interplanetary journey to
- 13:15Mars, as proposed by Mars One, would entail an isolation and
- 13:19confinement period of up to nine months during the voyage,
- 13:22followed by a potentially permanent state on an alien
- 13:25planet millions of miles away from Earth.
- 13:28These conditions can give rise to a host of psychological
- 13:31issues, including but not limit to loneliness, depression,
- 13:35anxiety, and interpersonal conflicts.
- 13:38The isolation from friends, family, and familiar
- 13:40surroundings can intensify feelings of loneliness.
- 13:43And can lead to depression, the confinement of the spacecraft
- 13:47with limited room to move and lack of privacy and create
- 13:51tension and conflict among the crew.
- 13:53Prolonged periods of monotony, broken only by high stress
- 13:56situations, can cause cognitive and behavioral issues.
- 14:00Furthermore, communication delays with Earth ranging up to
- 14:0324 minutes round trip, can create feelings of isolation and
- 14:07frustration and can challenge the crew's problem solving
- 14:10abilities. Because immediate support or
- 14:13advice won't be available to them in a pod arrival on Mars,
- 14:17the astronauts will be faced with a bearing and harsh
- 14:19environment drastically different from Earth.
- 14:22This alien landscape, combined with the realization of a
- 14:25permanent stay, may further exacerbate feelings of
- 14:28isolation, homesickness and stress.
- 14:31Astronauts on a mission to Mars will require a unique blend of
- 14:34skills to cope with these challenges though, including
- 14:36technical and scientific expertise, excellent problem
- 14:39solving skills. And robust psychological
- 14:42resilience, the selection, the training and support of these
- 14:45pioneers would be paramount to the success of the mission and
- 14:49the wellbeing of the crew. This all culminates in the
- 14:53bankruptcy in the end of Mars 1. Mars One went bankrupt in 2019
- 14:59and it was because Boss Lansrup did a debate against MIT
- 15:04researchers. So.
- 15:06US, The cofounder of Mars One and MIT Massachusetts Institute
- 15:11of Technology researchers had an event.
- 15:13There was a debate. It revolved around a critical
- 15:15study by MIT graduate students which analyzed the feasibility
- 15:20of the Mars 1 mission plan. They use publicly available
- 15:23information about Mars One and the life support requirements of
- 15:26a crude mission to Mars. They found out that with the
- 15:29current technology, sustaining life on Mars would be
- 15:32challenging due to issues. Like the overproduction of
- 15:35oxygen from plants in the habitat and the need for a
- 15:38significant number of spare parts for the life support
- 15:41system in every spots to the study, Boz Landsdorp claimed
- 15:45that Mars One had solutions to these issues and the criticism
- 15:49was based on assumptions that did not apply to the missions
- 15:52plans. Landsdorp did not, however,
- 15:55provide detailed explanations of counter arguments to all the
- 15:58points raised by the MIT team. And Landsdorp invited the
- 16:02researchers for a public debate to discuss these findings.
- 16:06The debate took place at the 2015 Mars Society Convention,
- 16:10where the MIT team and Landsdorp presented their points of view.
- 16:14The debate further highlighted the questions and challenges
- 16:17around the Mars 1 mission, and the criticism from the MIT team
- 16:21was a part of broader skepticism that the Mars 1 mission faced
- 16:24with various scientists, engineers, and space
- 16:26enthusiasts. The mission was seen as
- 16:29underestimating the complexity. And cost of a human Mars
- 16:32mission. These criticisms and challenges,
- 16:35along with financial difficulties, eventually led to
- 16:39the demise of the Mars One endeavor.
