• 0:03
Speaker 1: They told us that we needed to stop letting our
• 0:05
Speaker 1: people use their microwave to heat their pee.
• 0:08
Speaker 2: Then they hop on a golf cart and start driving
• 0:11
Speaker 2: around the facility in mascot costumes, flipping off every security
• 0:16
Speaker 2: camera they can find. This is the Bad Hire, the
• 0:20
Speaker 2: show with the best stories about the worst employees.
• 0:23
  Speaker 3: We fired him.
• 0:24
Speaker 2: Of course, people are crazy.
• 0:26
Speaker 3: It's like an hr nightmare.

Speaker 2: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
• 0:44
Speaker 2: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they're cautionary
• 0:48
Speaker 2: tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started,
• 0:54
Speaker 2: all right, Hi everyone, and welcome to The Bad Hire
• 0:57
Speaker 2: The Podcast. We're hiring disasters, meet guaranteed firings. I'm back
• 1:03
Speaker 2: today with Nathan and Emma. Yes you do, you're good?
• 1:13
  Speaker 4: All right?
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Ready for some stories?
• 1:15
Speaker 2: You ready for some stories? All right? Every week we
• 1:18
Speaker 2: dive into the wildest, the weirdest, and the most jaw
• 1:21
Speaker 2: dropping hiring fails from offices, job sites, organizations, nonprofits, you
• 1:27
Speaker 2: name it, wherever that bad hires happen, so you know,
• 1:32
Speaker 2: send it to us. Don't forget. We have a contest
• 1:35
Speaker 2: running this year. Send us your stories that enters you
• 1:39
Speaker 2: into the contest. It should be a bad hire story.
• 1:41
Speaker 2: It could be a bad interview. It could be a
• 1:43
Speaker 2: bad first day on the job. It could be a
• 1:45
Speaker 2: bad just a flame out after some period of times something,
• 1:48
Speaker 2: you know what, you know, those stories you love to tell.
• 1:50
Speaker 2: We think, we think everybody's got a story, especially in
• 1:53
Speaker 2: the recruiting and hiring business. Everybody's got a story, probably
• 1:56
Speaker 2: lots of them that you love to tell when you're
• 1:59
Speaker 2: hanging out, uh with your friends. So we want to
• 2:02
Speaker 2: hear those stories. People love to hear them, and so
• 2:06
Speaker 2: send them in. What We'll send them into the badhire
• 2:08
Speaker 2: dot Com. What we're gonna do will select the best
• 2:12
Speaker 2: after the end of the year. The winner gets ten
• 2:14
Speaker 2: thousand dollars. All right, nice, sound good? Yeah? All right,
• 2:18
Speaker 2: all right, I've I've I've just got one today. So
• 2:22
Speaker 2: but it's a couple of little stories rolled into one,
• 2:27
Speaker 2: so I'll kick it off.
• 2:29
Speaker 5: Interesting, okay, Oh, it's probably like a couple of like, oh,
• 2:38
Speaker 5: I hired these three people, and this person did this,
• 2:40
Speaker 5: this person did this.
• 2:41
Speaker 2: Maybe I don't know, you're predicting my stories. This is
• 2:47
Speaker 2: the story of the greatest job exit I've ever heard.
• 2:53
  Speaker 1: It's good interrm.
• 2:54
Speaker 2: I like that. So as a recruiter, So I, as
• 3:00
Speaker 2: a recruiter, place a guy in a role, not just him,
• 3:04
Speaker 2: him and his best friend.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: Always a bad idea of.
• 3:09
Speaker 2: Same company, same contract, and it's perfect. They love the job,
• 3:14
Speaker 2: the company loves them. Everybody's winning. You're thinking, all right,
• 3:20
Speaker 2: this is what is supposed to look like. Fast forward
• 3:23
Speaker 2: to the end of the contract. The company extends both
• 3:26
Speaker 2: of them full time offers like rollover offers. Basically, we
• 3:31
Speaker 2: want you here permanently. Right, that's a dream scenario for
• 3:34
Speaker 2: everybody involved. The only catch is that the rollover process
• 3:38
Speaker 2: is taking a little longer than they expected. And this okay,
• 3:42
Speaker 2: so this was over ten years ago, right, So it's
• 3:46
Speaker 2: in the middle of nowhere. Court records apparently weren't online
• 3:50
Speaker 2: in that location, so the background check literally required someone
• 3:56
Speaker 2: to go pull paperwork by hand at the time. So
• 4:00
Speaker 2: the company's working on it. So I guess they're saying,
• 4:04
Speaker 2: we didn't do one previously, so they are just contractors before,
• 4:08
Speaker 2: and we didn't screen our contractors before we send them
• 4:11
Speaker 2: to you. Uh so the company's working on it. But
• 4:13
Speaker 2: these two guys decide they're done waiting on their background checks,
• 4:18
Speaker 2: and instead of passking okay, instead of asking HR, instead
• 4:22
Speaker 2: of being patient, instead of doing anything remotely normal, they
• 4:27
Speaker 2: choose complete chaos. So they are somehow fined. Where the
• 4:31
Speaker 2: company stores the company mascot costumes.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: Okay, do you get one of them?
• 4:38
  Speaker 3: Company?
• 4:39
Speaker 2: They put them on. Then they hop on a golf
• 4:42
Speaker 2: cart and start driving around the facility in mascot costumes,
• 4:47
Speaker 2: flipping off every security camera they can find. They parked
• 4:52
Speaker 2: the car, walk off the job, and they are never
• 4:55
  Speaker 2: seen again.
• 4:56
Speaker 3: I'm not going to sound like our comments on our
• 4:58
  Speaker 3: videos right now.
• 4:59
Speaker 6: That is not They.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Were days away from full time offers, and they chose
• 5:06
Speaker 2: an all the time bad higher exodents.
• 5:08
Speaker 6: Just did not wait for two days. They blew up
• 5:10
  Speaker 6: their careers.
• 5:11
Speaker 3: There's no way that actually happened.
• 5:14
Speaker 1: If this was you, we need you to comment.
• 5:18
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that was me.
• 5:19
Speaker 3: If you submitted this story on Reddit ten years ago.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: No, no, no, I think you said that it was
• 5:24
  Speaker 2: ten years ago.
• 5:25
  Speaker 6: This story.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: If you submitted this story on Reddit and just said
• 5:28
Speaker 3: that it happened ten years ago. Please let us know
• 5:31
Speaker 3: if it's actually real.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: We want to know this has really happened.
• 5:35
Speaker 1: Yeah, like it said, instead of doing anything sane or normal,
• 5:38
Speaker 1: here's what handles every time we say or that can't
• 5:41
Speaker 1: be true, right, or I don't think this one's true
• 5:44
  Speaker 1: or someone.
• 5:44
Speaker 3: That's probably the first one where I've been like, there's
• 5:46
Speaker 3: no way that's all.
• 5:47
Speaker 2: The others, it's been a couple more like okay, first
• 5:50
Speaker 2: one for me, you know which one it really got me.
• 5:52
Speaker 2: It was the one where there's like, hey, we changed
• 5:54
Speaker 2: the rule book, you know, the employees. So the guy
• 5:58
Speaker 2: said I get three warnings writing anyway, you know, and
• 6:02
  Speaker 2: I was like, okay, I think that's like I couldn't
• 6:05
Speaker 2: believe that one. It's like some folklore hr story told you.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: It's like a joke. Yeah, joke, right. But every time
• 6:12
Speaker 2: you every time we uh say oh that can't be true,
• 6:17
Speaker 2: there's like always someone it says, no, I had something
• 6:21
Speaker 2: exactly like that happened too, which is also like this
• 6:24
Speaker 2: unlimited and that's what that's what's been wild about all
• 6:26
Speaker 2: them one is getting submitted to us.
• 6:28
Speaker 6: It's like, okay, well this person.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: I guess could be like submitting a completely fake story
• 6:32
Speaker 1: to try and win the contest. I guess you could
• 6:34
Speaker 1: do that, but the sex with somebody's lived experienced, I guess,
• 6:38
Speaker 1: so maybe you'd verify somehow. But it's not just pulled
• 6:40
Speaker 1: from Reddit. I guess somebod these are pulled from Reddit
• 6:42
Speaker 1: and stuff like that. But yeah, that's crazy, all right,
• 6:46
Speaker 1: they sound very dumb.
• 6:48
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 6:49
Speaker 1: I've got one quick story, and then we got a
• 6:51
Speaker 1: couple video clips of stories that people have been submitting
• 6:55
Speaker 1: their stories and asking to be a guest on the show,
• 6:57
Speaker 1: but when they're in some other state far away from
• 6:59
Speaker 1: where re record here in North Carolina, I just pulled
• 7:02
Speaker 1: them onto a riverside clip, so we record on riverside
• 7:06
Speaker 1: just like zoom. So if you do have a story
• 7:08
Speaker 1: and you actually want to be on the podcast as
• 7:11
Speaker 1: a guest, we can't make it to our studio in
• 7:13
Speaker 1: North Carolina, just hit us up and we'll have you.
• 7:15
Speaker 2: At the very least, we've posted a couple of full.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: Length episodes of like the full recorded virtual episodes, but
• 7:22
Speaker 1: the very least, we'll take your stories and have them
• 7:24
Speaker 1: here on the show. So anyways, you got a couple
• 7:25
Speaker 1: of those two. But first, I've got one quick story.
• 7:28
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 7:29
Speaker 1: At my company, we had a drug testing facility that
• 7:32
Speaker 1: we sent our people to that was about five minutes
• 7:35
Speaker 1: away from our office. One day, we get a call
• 7:38
Speaker 1: from the gas station that shared a parking lot with
• 7:41
Speaker 1: the drug testing facility.
• 7:43
Speaker 6: They told us that we needed.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: To stop letting our people use their microwave to heat
• 7:47
Speaker 1: their pee because somebody had heated it so long and
• 7:51
Speaker 1: it had turned black and they had to evacuate the
• 7:54
Speaker 1: gas station due to the smell.
• 7:57
Speaker 6: So that's the whole story.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: So I guess people are trying to cheat on their
• 8:02
Speaker 1: drug tests because like when you do a drug test,
• 8:05
Speaker 1: they see if it's warmed, because you can't just like
• 8:07
Speaker 1: bring in somebody else. And so people were trying to
• 8:10
Speaker 1: cheat by sneaking over to the gas station, micro waving
• 8:13
Speaker 1: the pea, and then sneaking back in with someone who's cleaned.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: I have never been into a gas station that has
• 8:18
  Speaker 3: a marketwave where.
• 8:21
Speaker 6: Seven elevens they have, like the hot dogs, they got
• 8:23
  Speaker 6: the pee, it's.
• 8:23
Speaker 2: All right there. You know what this no, you know
• 8:26
Speaker 2: what this tells me about you. It's like someone always
• 8:31
Speaker 2: goes and gets your stuff for you're in your car
• 8:34
Speaker 2: and you're like, can you get me you know, a
• 8:39
  Speaker 2: coffee drink?
• 8:40
Speaker 3: And I'm not going in by myself.
• 8:43
Speaker 1: Especially not this one. That's stay away from this, guess
• 8:46
Speaker 1: a microwaving every kid station.
• 8:50
Speaker 3: I have just never noticed at.
• 8:51
Speaker 1: Least seven eleven. To be fair, I don't really eat there,
• 8:54
Speaker 1: so I never I don't think I ever used it before.
• 8:56
Speaker 1: What you have walked, I think you have to work
• 8:58
Speaker 1: in construction to eat there, for sure.
• 9:00
  Speaker 2: I mean there's they're like.
• 9:01
Speaker 3: Is that a big construction.
• 9:04
Speaker 2: No, No, it's if you go into a circle K
• 9:08
Speaker 2: circle case of like turned it into those right.
• 9:12
Speaker 1: They have like the eighty nine cent burritos, which are amazing,
• 9:15
Speaker 1: But initially they started out.
• 9:17
Speaker 2: Building like way you can get hot dogs, and they
• 9:19
Speaker 2: started building other food stuff. And you know, a lot
• 9:22
Speaker 2: of construction any a lot of outdoor you know where
• 9:26
Speaker 2: you you might be, you might be dirty, right, so
• 9:31
Speaker 2: you don't you're not going to go sit in a restaurant.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: Maybe you don't want to run through a drive through.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: You can come here. You can kind of load up
• 9:37
Speaker 2: on you know, your your energy drinks, plus grab something.
• 9:41
Speaker 7: I've been into gas stations where obviously they're before I've
• 9:45
Speaker 7: been obviously, I've been into the gas gas stations where
• 9:50
Speaker 7: like they have like the warmers in there with the
• 9:53
  Speaker 7: food on it.
• 9:53
Speaker 3: Is that what they're talking.
• 9:56
Speaker 1: The talk adjacent to there? Yeah, so you're you're right,
• 9:58
Speaker 1: there's they got the Taketo's and the pizza if you
• 10:00
Speaker 1: had like a seven eleven or something like that. But
• 10:02
Speaker 1: then we're kind of around the corner some places how
• 10:05
Speaker 1: to place it, like the whole thing you can pump
• 10:06
Speaker 1: your own nacho cheese nachos. Next to that is like
• 10:10
Speaker 1: the is the microwave for like again like the frozen
• 10:13
Speaker 1: burritos or something like that.
• 10:14
Speaker 2: Marcus, he's there all the time, right, Yeah, he likes it.
• 10:19
Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, that's not That's not the first spot
• 10:23
Speaker 3: I go to where I go into a.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: Gas st It's all open at midnight a year round,
• 10:29
Speaker 1: like all day, twenty four hour.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: The last time my buddy was in town, we ended
• 10:32
Speaker 2: up at one like a minute. Sounds fun before we
• 10:35
Speaker 2: dive back into the chaos on the bad hire. This
• 10:38
Speaker 2: episode is brought to you by be Checks. Hiring shouldn't

• 11:15
Speaker 2: h e X dot io. All right, but we got it. Okay,
• 11:20
Speaker 2: I'm bad. Wait, so we're gonna do We're gonna do
• 11:24
Speaker 2: a couple of riverside reacts. Is that right? Do a
• 11:26
Speaker 2: couple of segment reacts?
• 11:27
  Speaker 6: No?
• 11:27
Speaker 2: No, I call these segments. I don't know. Come come
• 11:29
Speaker 2: to a segment on the show. Talk to her. Sure,
• 11:31
  Speaker 2: we'll interview you.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: This is an episode with Steve. Steve is amazing. He's
• 11:35
Speaker 1: one of my favorite guts I've talked to. He's out
• 11:37
Speaker 1: in Los Angeles and he cool background. Yeah, he is
• 11:41
Speaker 1: a very cool background. I think we might post more
• 11:43
Speaker 1: of his clips, like on our social media and stuff
• 11:45
Speaker 1: like that. But this is one of the stories that
• 11:47
  Speaker 1: he told me.
• 11:48
Speaker 8: It was a kid who came in looking for a
• 11:50
Speaker 8: tech spot and he literally went from high school to
• 11:54
Speaker 8: a ninety day coding camp. He never went to college,
• 11:57
Speaker 8: never got a job, never worked anywhere, straight out high school,
• 12:00
Speaker 8: three month coding camp. I had an interview with him.
• 12:02
Speaker 8: You wanted one hundred and forty thousand dollars to start,
• 12:05
Speaker 8: and this is eight years ago, and even today that's
• 12:07
Speaker 8: as a starting salary. I think one forty's probably on
• 12:10
Speaker 8: the high side. And I said, look, I'm not doubting
• 12:13
Speaker 8: that you're able to do this, but you've never had
• 12:15
  Speaker 8: a job. I said, I don't know how you're going
• 12:17
Speaker 8: to be as an employee. You have zero references, you
• 12:20
Speaker 8: have zero experience, and you look good on paper. You
• 12:23
Speaker 8: check all the boxes you know, regarding software development. But
• 12:25
Speaker 8: I just in good conscience, I can't hire you right now.
• 12:28
Speaker 8: And I said, look, the other thing you should be
• 12:30
Speaker 8: aware of is when you come into an interview, it's
• 12:32
Speaker 8: going to be slanted towards the employer. You're there to
• 12:35
Speaker 8: kind of serve their needs initially at least. Yeah, they're
• 12:37
Speaker 8: going to compensate you, but that's the balance. You do
• 12:39
Speaker 8: the work they pay you, and it can't be the
• 12:41
Speaker 8: first thing out of your mouth is what are my
• 12:43
Speaker 8: days off? Or can I work?
• 12:44
Speaker 2: You know, certain days.
• 12:45
Speaker 8: From home you didn't know.
• 12:46
  Speaker 2: And again I didn't.
• 12:47
Speaker 8: Hold men in the personally, I'm just trying to help them.
• 12:49
Speaker 8: But I said, you straight out of high school and
• 12:51
Speaker 8: you have zero experience with a work and the money
• 12:53
Speaker 8: you're asking for is pretty healthy. I said, I'm not
• 12:56
Speaker 8: going to hire you. I might hire you at half
• 12:57
Speaker 8: that and maybe you can come back in six months
• 12:59
Speaker 8: or a year when you've got something under your belt,
• 13:01
Speaker 8: but I just can't do it. It was shocking to me.
• 13:04
Speaker 8: That's where we are and this is you know, la
• 13:06
Speaker 8: and it's kind of the tech stuff. But again, your
• 13:08
Speaker 8: choice as a company, as a hiring person to bring
• 13:11
Speaker 8: somebody on your team, you don't always have to say.
• 13:13
Speaker 2: Us, okay, they're a lot crazy, but yeah, that's crazy.
• 13:17
Speaker 1: So at eighteen, or maybe maybe twenty two.
• 13:20
Speaker 3: Especting that much out of right out of high school
• 13:23
Speaker 3: was just insane to me.
• 13:25
Speaker 2: At did a three month coding camp and I'm good
• 13:28
Speaker 2: wing to be the top.
• 13:30
Speaker 3: Three months is enough. It's also crazy because I did
• 13:33
Speaker 3: a lot of that in college.
• 13:34
  Speaker 6: And it's still I.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: Like Steve, but he did say the kid checked all
• 13:38
Speaker 2: the boxes, and I'm like, wait, he's just out of
• 13:42
Speaker 2: high school and he went to a three month coding camp.
• 13:44
  Speaker 9: Yeah.
• 13:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe on paper, it's like, do you know how
• 13:48
Speaker 2: to do this? I know I do that. Do you
• 13:50
Speaker 2: know how to do this?
• 13:50
  Speaker 5: Yeah?
• 13:50
Speaker 1: I know I did, But what's your experience? It's like, oh,
• 13:53
Speaker 1: I did a coding camp I found on YouTube.
• 13:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a fun thing to say, oh, yeah, I
• 13:58
  Speaker 3: can do that.
• 13:59
Speaker 2: Now we've had we actually have hired developers out of both.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: We actually ran an experiment one time and hired out
• 14:07
Speaker 2: of a coding camp and out of like four degree
• 14:12
Speaker 2: university degree. And and I think we found out they're
• 14:16
Speaker 2: both talented. Both could write code. Yeah, in the end, So,
• 14:21
Speaker 2: you know, I think there's it's it's up to the student,
• 14:24
Speaker 2: you know, what they might be looking for for year,
• 14:26
Speaker 2: experience and opportunity to grow. And I learned a lot
• 14:30
Speaker 2: more than just everything, you know, compressing too, and.
• 14:33
Speaker 3: You actually to prove your abilities to them.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: That's probably. Yeah, there's something about going you know, there's
• 14:39
Speaker 2: something about going to school that says to me about
• 14:41
Speaker 2: someone I'm capable of getting up, going, you know, going
• 14:44
Speaker 2: to class, getting things done, not only in subjects I love,
• 14:47
  Speaker 2: but in subjects I don't. Right, that's a huge one.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: If I love coding and I go to a coding
• 14:51
Speaker 2: boo camp, like, man, I just landed and the stuff
• 14:54
Speaker 2: I love. I was like, but you know, work every
• 14:56
Speaker 2: day is not exactly stuff you love. You still to
• 15:00
Speaker 2: get it done. You still got to get an a
• 15:01
  Speaker 2: on it.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's like, not that I know anything about coding,
• 15:04
Speaker 1: but imagine that having some years under your belt of
• 15:08
Speaker 1: actually actually doing in the real world, like for an
• 15:11
Speaker 1: actual company, would probably speak volumes to someone who's hiring
• 15:14
Speaker 1: for someone like that, versus.
• 15:15
Speaker 3: Definitely going through like a coding camp. You have probably
• 15:18
Speaker 3: have certain prompts that you have to go through. So
• 15:20
Speaker 3: I feel like it's very organized as compared to like,
• 15:25
Speaker 3: if you're in the real world and doing some type
• 15:27
Speaker 3: of coding, then it's going to be different every day
• 15:29
Speaker 3: compared to what you're doing if you're just doing a
• 15:32
Speaker 3: simple little yeah you know prompt.
• 15:35
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, dude, doing a prompt in camp or you know,
• 15:39
Speaker 2: even so, what's next? What do you got?
• 15:41
Speaker 1: I got one more story with Veronica, who's also in hiring,
• 15:45
Speaker 1: and she was telling me about a story who did
• 15:49
Speaker 1: not go as planned. I guess I lead as the
• 15:52
Speaker 1: leading Okay, I guess that's how they all are, but
• 15:54
  Speaker 1: this is Veronica.
• 15:55
Speaker 9: I had this great candidate who absolutely nailed the interview process.
• 16:00
Speaker 9: You know, great energy, super personable, asked very thoughtful questions.
• 16:05
Speaker 9: You know, the type of candidate that you're in a meeting,
• 16:07
Speaker 9: you're in a call, and everybody gets off and it says, okay,
• 16:09
Speaker 9: when can he start?
• 16:11
Speaker 2: It was that great.
• 16:12
Speaker 9: We made an offer, accepted immediately. He stayed in touch
• 16:16
Speaker 9: with me throughout, and we tend to hire a couple
• 16:19
Speaker 9: months prior to their start date because we have firm
• 16:21
Speaker 9: start dates. I was surprised and actually liked that he
• 16:24
Speaker 9: stayed in touch, constantly checking in during the background check,
• 16:28
Speaker 9: excited messages about his start date, and genuinely pumped up
• 16:31
Speaker 9: to be here, to be joining the team. Fast forward
• 16:34
Speaker 9: to his first week of work. I get a message
• 16:37
Speaker 9: from his GM, the general manager, that stops me cold.
• 16:41
Speaker 9: He's like, he's missing. He's not late, not logged off early,
• 16:45
Speaker 9: but missing. He hadn't showed up for training for two
• 16:48
Speaker 9: days straight and so I'm thinking that can be right.
• 16:51
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 16:51
Speaker 9: The GM asked me if I heard from him. I said, no,
• 16:53
Speaker 9: unfortunately I haven't. He didn't text me or anything, which
• 16:56
Speaker 9: was already strange. Then the GM, the general manager, dropped
• 17:00
Speaker 9: the next bomb. They reached out to his emergency contact,
• 17:03
Speaker 9: his mother, and she hadn't heard from him in two
• 17:05
Speaker 9: days either. Even says that she filed the police report.
• 17:09
Speaker 9: At that point, you know it's no longer hiring issue,
• 17:12
Speaker 9: is more of a human issue. Months go by, we
• 17:14
Speaker 9: don't hear back from him or no updates. We eventually
• 17:19
Speaker 9: reopened the position one day. Months later, Curiosity got the
• 17:23
Speaker 9: best of me and I said, let me just do
• 17:25
Speaker 9: a cool Google search because I want his name. I
• 17:28
Speaker 9: was like, let me see if I can find some information.
• 17:30
Speaker 9: And there it was in a newspaper article, smiling featured
• 17:35
Speaker 9: promoting his brand new business, inviting people to join him
• 17:38
Speaker 9: in his new big endeavor. And it was at that
• 17:41
Speaker 9: moment I realized something. Sometimes candids don't ghost you, they
• 17:45
  Speaker 9: vanish and rebrand.
• 17:50
Speaker 6: You're interested so interesting.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: She told me that story, and I was like, what,
• 17:55
Speaker 1: Like he disappeared and then just kind of his.
• 17:57
Speaker 3: Mom fought a police. Then Slider, he's like, oh.
• 18:01
Speaker 1: Here he is a start up.
• 18:02
Speaker 2: Now two days of training, well, now there's two things
• 18:06
Speaker 2: crazy right. Two days of training and he realized, oh,
• 18:08
  Speaker 2: I don't like corporate bro.
• 18:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, just the employer, but ghosted.
• 18:13
Speaker 2: I'm sorry mom, mom too. Yeah, what could he have started?
• 18:20
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 18:20
Speaker 1: It's some kind of text startup about vanishing and disappearing
• 18:24
Speaker 1: for the world. I guess, I don't know.
• 18:26
  Speaker 3: That's very strange.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: She's weary. And then and then to the ghost my mother.
• 18:34
Speaker 2: I'd have had to go. I'd have had to have
• 18:36
Speaker 2: been disappeared for like three months from my mom would
• 18:38
Speaker 2: have considered called the cops. Yeah, heard from him. He
• 18:42
Speaker 2: might be dead. He must he must be busy. Yeah,
• 18:46
Speaker 2: his mom called the cops after two days. Yeah. Yeah,
• 18:49
  Speaker 2: I mean that's that's a man. I'm telling you right now.
• 18:52
Speaker 2: That's well, that's what that's. Someone is connected to their mom.
• 18:56
Speaker 2: You're talking like two three times a day. She's in
• 18:59
Speaker 2: I didn't hear about the second day. She's like, oh,
• 19:01
Speaker 2: this is this is a cop batter. This my son
• 19:04
Speaker 2: days call me that the he's probably dead. Yeah, this
• 19:08
Speaker 2: is your mom. You take your often, you talk to
• 19:12
Speaker 2: your mom? What every day? Every day?
• 19:15
  Speaker 6: Oh?
• 19:15
  Speaker 7: Yeah, I can't have to.
• 19:17
Speaker 2: Oh that's right, Yeah, I guess. So that was.
• 19:22
  Speaker 6: She literally said.
• 19:23
Speaker 3: She literally said the other day, if if she was
• 19:26
Speaker 3: ever like on a game show, and the question was
• 19:29
Speaker 3: you have to call one person and if they pick up,
• 19:32
Speaker 3: if they pick up the phone, you win like X
• 19:33
Speaker 3: amount of dollars. She said that she would call me.
• 19:35
Speaker 3: I will always pick up the phones.
• 19:37
Speaker 2: Great. Is that true?
• 19:38
  Speaker 3: Yeah it is, Yeah, it's it's And if I don't
• 19:42
Speaker 3: call right back, It's.
• 19:43
Speaker 2: Twelve forty nine on the Saturday night, I'm most likely awake.
• 19:49
Speaker 2: You're hanging with your friends. Yep, right downtown Charlotte. Boom
• 19:54
Speaker 2: phone rings, yep, true. Mom.
• 19:57
Speaker 3: I would immediately answer because I would think something's wrong.
• 19:59
Speaker 3: She's never up l Let's see what it would make
• 20:02
Speaker 3: me think something was wrong. So of course I would answer.
• 20:03
Speaker 6: Let's see what about that.
• 20:05
Speaker 2: She would be like, where are you at? What do
• 20:07
  Speaker 2: you do?
• 20:08
Speaker 3: He's got my location?
• 20:09
Speaker 2: Okay, yes, she's in the middle of downtown Charlotte. She's worried,
• 20:15
Speaker 2: look about your dad.
• 20:16
Speaker 6: Let's see what she has to say about She's around
• 20:18
  Speaker 6: the corner.
• 20:19
Speaker 2: He would the world.
• 20:21
Speaker 3: I don't know if he would worry, if he if
• 20:23
Speaker 3: he could see where I am, and he's not going
• 20:25
Speaker 3: to call and say where are you right, it's not
• 20:29
Speaker 3: gonna waste his time.
• 20:30
Speaker 1: If that gets stop sharing their locations with me, so
• 20:33
Speaker 1: something would be I guess like your mom would call
• 20:35
Speaker 1: the cops after yes, the day, after two days, Hello.
• 20:37
Speaker 2: Would to take her? What do you mean, Helen, would
• 20:40
Speaker 2: it take her call the cops? Yeah? Probably one day. Yeah,
• 20:47
Speaker 2: probably your choice as fast as our brand ambassador there, Yeah,
• 20:52
Speaker 2: started his own gig. That was very random.
• 20:55
Speaker 1: I mean the fact that you'd ghost your employer that
• 20:58
Speaker 1: you're talking to is like one thing, but like your
• 21:00
Speaker 1: family doesn't hear from you, and you're like, I started
• 21:02
Speaker 1: a company, yeah, for someone who was so.
• 21:04
Speaker 2: So like really all about it the whole time. It
• 21:07
Speaker 2: feel like it'd be so easy to go to the
• 21:09
Speaker 2: GM and go instead of just ghosting the guy, just
• 21:11
Speaker 2: be like yeah, you know what. After two days of training,
• 21:14
Speaker 2: I realized this isn't for me. Yeah you know, yeah, Yeah,
• 21:18
  Speaker 2: I'm going to rent a m I'm going to rent
• 21:19
Speaker 2: a Lamborghini and pretend it's mine and go on social
• 21:22
Speaker 2: media see if I can.
• 21:23
Speaker 3: Get a Yeah, you think you would speak up after
• 21:25
Speaker 3: like after, she said he had followed up multiple times
• 21:28
Speaker 3: throughout the whole hiring cross what she said was a
• 21:31
Speaker 3: month long thing, months long process, because she said that
• 21:34
Speaker 3: they would it would tell them like their start date
• 21:38
Speaker 3: will be months from now.
• 21:39
Speaker 2: There's been a couple of stories where like the company
• 21:43
Speaker 2: someone ghosted and the company actually got worried. I think
• 21:45
Speaker 2: we were talking about the other day. I was like,
• 21:46
Speaker 2: what it did culture that company? Their first response was
• 21:49
Speaker 2: to be worried for the person. Yeah, you know, to
• 21:52
Speaker 2: do a wellness check.
• 21:53
Speaker 1: And you know, I think anytime we have a story
• 21:57
Speaker 1: on this show about somebody ghosting somebody, that always seems
• 22:01
Speaker 1: like the most relatable one because I think anything in
• 22:04
Speaker 1: the recruiting and hiring world that has to do with
• 22:06
Speaker 1: ghosting and like just never hearing back from somebody you
• 22:08
Speaker 1: thought it was going well on either side, whether it
• 22:10
Speaker 1: say the candidate or like, the happens all the time.
• 22:14
Speaker 1: And I've been there before, Like I was looking for jobs,
• 22:16
Speaker 1: like oh this is going so well, Like I nailed
• 22:18
Speaker 1: that interview, and the you just like never hear from
• 22:20
  Speaker 1: them again.
• 22:20
Speaker 2: I ghosted, do what I think?
• 22:22
Speaker 6: That's why That's why I had to follow it back.
• 22:23
Speaker 6: I showed up at your doorstet like, hey about that
• 22:26
Speaker 6: job ghost on me?
• 22:28
Speaker 2: Stalked me on my Lamborghini. That's so funny, all right,
• 22:33
Speaker 2: it was up today? Is this you?
• 22:36
  Speaker 6: Yeah?
• 22:36
Speaker 4: I think so all right, I've got two stories. I'll
• 22:41
Speaker 4: start with this one. I haven't reread this one before
• 22:48
Speaker 4: beginning this episode, so I don't really remember.
• 22:51
Speaker 2: So we'll see how it goes.
• 22:52
  Speaker 6: We'll see.
• 22:53
Speaker 2: So we're expecting a lot of stumbling with long words.
• 22:55
  Speaker 3: Maybe, I don't know.
• 22:56
  Speaker 2: We'll see.
• 22:57
Speaker 3: Today I had to fire an employee who was with
• 23:00
Speaker 3: me for almost exactly a year. I have a team
• 23:02
Speaker 3: of fourteen employees. We had several verbal warning conversations in
• 23:07
Speaker 3: different iterations, and I saw improvement at first. Recently we
• 23:10
Speaker 3: had some major issues with them arriving late, running behind
• 23:13
Speaker 3: with clients, and charging inappropriately. We had written warning meeting.
• 23:17
Speaker 3: We had a written warning meeting, which was met with
• 23:20
Speaker 3: a lot of defensiveness from the employee. For context, it's
• 23:23
Speaker 3: a hair salon today. I asked them if they were
• 23:27
Speaker 3: going to finish their client in time or if they'd
• 23:28
Speaker 3: be running behind. They assured me they'd be finished on time.
• 23:33
Speaker 3: They were a full half hour late for their next
• 23:35
Speaker 3: client and charged the first client, who who they had
• 23:38
Speaker 3: spent seven hours with incorrectly. I had my manager meet
• 23:42
Speaker 3: at work and we met with the stylists and let
• 23:45
Speaker 3: them go. They acted surprised, but we reminded them of
• 23:48
Speaker 3: every meeting we had leading up to it. Frankly, I
• 23:51
Speaker 3: was very sad to have let them go, but it's
• 23:53
Speaker 3: not sustainable. The morale has already been low, and I
• 23:56
Speaker 3: know this would be a big, a big blow. It's
• 23:59
Speaker 3: a small team and several of them are very good
• 24:01
Speaker 3: friends with the with the person who.
• 24:03
  Speaker 2: Was just fired.
• 24:06
Speaker 3: I'm not sure how to show up for the team
• 24:08
Speaker 3: to let to let wait see now now, I'm already
• 24:13
Speaker 3: struggling to let them know this really shouldn't have been
• 24:16
Speaker 3: a surprise for the person who got fired. I know
• 24:19
Speaker 3: I have to be vague. I don't want anyone to
• 24:20
Speaker 3: be worried about their job. And then it just ends
• 24:23
Speaker 3: with the question any tips for getting morale up and
• 24:26
Speaker 3: making sure the team still trust us.
• 24:30
Speaker 2: Wait to go back?
• 24:31
Speaker 6: Was that a seven hour haircut that they gave?
• 24:35
  Speaker 3: I think I think it's probably a color, some type
• 24:38
  Speaker 3: of color.
• 24:39
  Speaker 1: Seven hours.
• 24:39
  Speaker 2: I would tell you that I don't think that Emma's
• 24:41
Speaker 2: surprised at all, and.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: It's like, okay, yeah, sometimes sometimes hair appointments take really long.
• 24:47
Speaker 3: It depends on how what type of color you're doing,
• 24:50
Speaker 3: Like definitely, if you're like bleaching it, you'll probably have
• 24:53
Speaker 3: to go through it several times because the first round
• 24:55
Speaker 3: of bleach probably make it look young.
• 24:58
Speaker 2: And you can have a cut, you have your hair, you.
• 25:00
Speaker 3: And then style, yes, so that takes a long time
• 25:03
Speaker 3: time and then they're doing your hair and then they
• 25:08
Speaker 3: probably styling, and then.
• 25:10
Speaker 2: They can do then they can do the die whatever
• 25:13
Speaker 2: the color, and then.
• 25:14
Speaker 1: It's just sitting like in the hair chair from like
• 25:18
Speaker 1: it like for like a nine to five, just like
• 25:20
Speaker 1: sitting there just like there's like work on my head
• 25:21
  Speaker 1: the whole time.
• 25:22
Speaker 2: It's like a long time. Yeah, well yeah, it takes
• 25:26
Speaker 2: six minutes of your haircut, I think, right, yeah, it
• 25:29
Speaker 2: was size and get out of there.
• 25:31
  Speaker 1: Yeah that's crazy.
• 25:33
Speaker 3: Oh gosh, all right, uh my next story you ready, Okay,
• 25:39
Speaker 3: all right, let's hear it.
• 25:41
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 25:42
Speaker 3: We hired a senior engineer let's call him Bob. Bob
• 25:45
Speaker 3: based on a long resume and one repeated claim. Whenever
• 25:48
Speaker 3: we asked how much of a project he done, the
• 25:51
Speaker 3: answer was always all of it. For a small company,
• 25:54
Speaker 3: that sounded perfect, But once Bob started, things unraveled fast.
• 25:58
Speaker 3: His code wouldn't compile because he insisted header files were
• 26:01
Speaker 3: optional quote unquote optional in hardware.
• 26:05
  Speaker 2: Reviews.
• 26:05
Speaker 3: He'd randomly reroute boards and add components, just because months
• 26:10
Speaker 3: in he still needed constant help with basic tools, and
• 26:13
Speaker 3: his simple code task turned into a total rewrite that
• 26:16
Speaker 3: made everything worse. That's when we realized something was off.
• 26:19
Speaker 3: Later I met one of his former co workers who
• 26:21
Speaker 3: casually mentioned he had written all of the code at
• 26:24
Speaker 3: Bob's startup. Turns out, when Bob said he did all
• 26:27
Speaker 3: of it, he meant he told other people what to do.
• 26:30
Speaker 3: Manager lesson learned always ask what all of it actually means.
• 26:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good advice. Yeah, so what did you do?
• 26:39
Speaker 6: Oh, it's all it's all been done.
• 26:41
Speaker 2: It's been done by somebody.
• 26:43
Speaker 3: Yeah, what did you do all of that?
• 26:45
Speaker 2: Yes, I have whites people do it. Yeah, we've had that.
• 26:49
Speaker 2: And the story where the real similar The guy was
• 26:52
Speaker 2: supposed to be a coding expert and he was like, well,
• 26:55
Speaker 2: I had seen people do it, so I assumed, oh, yeah,
• 26:58
Speaker 2: I've seen tip tiktoks about coding.
• 27:00
Speaker 6: I know all about it.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: Yeah three months, Yeah, I could get it done. I'll
• 27:04
  Speaker 3: figure it out.
• 27:05
Speaker 2: I did the whole thing.
• 27:06
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 27:06
Speaker 1: That's also a common theme where it's just people over
• 27:09
Speaker 1: stating what they know how to do in one way
• 27:11
Speaker 1: or another, like they either completely make it up or
• 27:15
Speaker 1: they go and read it and read some of these
• 27:17
Speaker 1: threads for people who talk about getting jobs, and they
• 27:19
Speaker 1: will straight up tell you, oh, just lie and say
• 27:22
Speaker 1: you can do it all once they once.
• 27:23
Speaker 2: You, here's how you wou'd you get there? They can't
• 27:26
  Speaker 2: fire you.
• 27:26
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, here's how I lied on my resume and
• 27:30
  Speaker 3: got the job.
• 27:31
  Speaker 2: Wow, it's right, that's crazy, it's nuts. Yeah, I don't know,
• 27:38
Speaker 2: all right. I always ask what all of it means?
• 27:40
Speaker 2: How much of that? How much of the social media
• 27:43
Speaker 2: you're doing now, how much of all of the social
• 27:47
Speaker 2: media posting that you're doing? Now, that's what does all
• 27:51
Speaker 2: of it? We're saying.
• 27:53
Speaker 1: Last time, if if, if you see a snarky reply
• 27:55
Speaker 1: to your snarky comment, that's Emma being snark.
• 27:58
Speaker 2: That's Emma doing all of it. Yeah, that's right, all right,
• 28:02
Speaker 2: But that's it for us today. That was good, good
• 28:06
