Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Mitch mccanna is in the States for US this morning.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Which the deal, well, I say deal, but it hasn't
- 0:05Speaker 1: been signed by the Chinese yet, but Trump's pretty warm
- 0:08Speaker 1: on it, the trade deal with China.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. Good morning to you, Ryan. It's interesting
- 0:13Speaker 2: though Donald Trump has called this a deal, but really
- 0:16Speaker 2: it's a bit of a framework to continue working on
- 0:18Speaker 2: a deal down the road. So they've had talks in
- 0:22Speaker 2: London in the last couple of days, China and the
- 0:24Speaker 2: United States, and they've come up with this framework to
- 0:27Speaker 2: work together in the coming months. While they sought all
- 0:30Speaker 2: these trade issues out. Now, there are a couple of
- 0:32Speaker 2: things each side wants. The United States wants these rare
- 0:36Speaker 2: earth minerals from China. They're used for all different types
- 0:39Speaker 2: of things. They're used in cars for windshields and magnets.
- 0:42Speaker 2: They're also used in defense equipment. So Donald Trump says, yes,
- 0:45Speaker 2: they will get some of that. And what China wanted
- 0:48Speaker 2: was the United States to ease up on the way
- 0:50Speaker 2: it's treating Chinese international students. Donald Trump says that will
- 0:54Speaker 2: happen as well, but we don't have a lot of
- 0:57Speaker 2: detail around this. So there's one other thing China wants,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and that is the US to continue exporting semiconductor chips
- 1:05Speaker 2: to China, which is really important to China. But we
- 1:07Speaker 2: don't know if that's going to happen. So a lot
- 1:09Speaker 2: of unclear sort of detail around US. But Donald trump'sys
- 1:14Speaker 2: a deal of some sort has done.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, And I suppose the most important thing is the
- 1:19Speaker 1: talking and Trump's saying, you know, our relationship is on
- 1:21Speaker 1: the men. Now, the protests, what's going on? What's the latest?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Anything kicking off while we were sleeping?
- 1:28Speaker 3: Not yet.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We are expecting large protests again across a number of
- 1:32Speaker 2: US cities in the coming hours. It's only mid afternoon
- 1:35Speaker 2: here in the United States at the moment, but since Friday,
- 1:38Speaker 2: three hundred and thirty people have been arrested in Los Angeles,
- 1:40Speaker 2: more than two hundred and forty in San fran a
- 1:43Speaker 2: dozen in Austin, and there was about thirty people arrested
- 1:46Speaker 2: in New York last night. But this isn't just playing
- 1:48Speaker 2: out on the streets. It's also playing out online and
- 1:51Speaker 2: on TV. Between Donald Trump and the Governor of California,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Gavin Newsom, who held us sort of national speech last
- 1:59Speaker 2: night that all the TV networks took live and some
- 2:01Speaker 2: people are suggesting he might be using this as an
- 2:03Speaker 2: opportunity to position himself as the leader of the opposition
- 2:08Speaker 2: here in the US. Of course, the Democrats are in disarray.
- 2:10Speaker 2: They don't have a clear leader. Some are seeing this
- 2:12Speaker 2: as Gavin Newsom's chance to do that ahead of the
- 2:14Speaker 2: twenty twenty eight election.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Good luck, what having last time they elected a liberal
- 2:20Speaker 1: Californian governor as their party leader. Hey, thanks so much
- 2:24Speaker 1: much good to have you on the show. Mitch McCann
- 2:26Speaker 1: our US correspondent.
