- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:15this Monday, the 28th of July as we crack open a new week and
- 0:20keep on working our way through. Yeah, this amazing book of
- 0:24Deuteronomy. I hope you guys have been
- 0:26enjoying it as much as me. And we have got two more full
- 0:30weeks and then we will round it out and a couple of days the
- 0:33week following that. But this week is the last week
- 0:36that we are going through the commandments 1 by 1.
- 0:39And today we are in the last commandment, the last of the 10
- 0:43commandments, which is you shall not covet anything that belongs
- 0:47to your neighbour. So this is where Moses is
- 0:50expanding. What does it mean to have human
- 0:52rights, the privileges of being a human being in God's people?
- 0:57What does that look like? And it's not just desiring the
- 1:00thing or not desiring the thing that your neighbour has, but
- 1:03also people's right to justice, you know, their their right to
- 1:06basic food and shelter and, and to have a family and be fairly
- 1:10treated. You know, basically, these are
- 1:12the things that we tell our kids they've got to do to each other
- 1:15so that we have the basic rules of law around us.
- 1:19That is what this final section is going to be talking about
- 1:23before Moses will say some final words next week and tie it all
- 1:27up. And then we'll see the narrative
- 1:28continue as they enter the promised land.
- 1:31But let us sit down and expand and open up what God's law looks
- 1:36like as his people enter this promised land.
- 1:39As we read together Deuteronomy chapter 25,
- 1:53suppose two people take a dispute to court, and the judges
- 1:57declare that one is right and the other is wrong.
- 2:00If the person in the wrong is sentenced to be flogged, the
- 2:03judge must command him to lie down and be beaten in his
- 2:06presence with the number of lashes appropriate to the crime.
- 2:10But never give more than 40 lashes.
- 2:12More than 40 lashes would publicly humiliate your
- 2:15neighbour. You must not muzzle an ox to
- 2:19keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.
- 2:23If two brothers are living together on the same property
- 2:26and one of them dies without a son, his widow may not be
- 2:29married to anyone from outside the family.
- 2:32Instead, her husband's brother should marry her and have
- 2:35intercourse with her to fulfil the duties of a brother in law.
- 2:39The first son she bears to him will be considered the son of
- 2:43the dead brother, so that his name will not be forgotten in
- 2:46Israel. But if the man refuses to marry
- 2:49his brother's widow, she must go down to the town gate and say to
- 2:52the elders assembled there, My husband's brother refuses to
- 2:56preserve his brother's name in Israel.
- 2:59He refuses to fulfil the duties of a brother in law by marrying
- 3:02me. The elders of the town will then
- 3:05summon him and talk with him. If he still refuses and says I
- 3:10don't want to marry her, the widow must walk over to him in
- 3:14the presence of the elders, pull his sandal from his foot and
- 3:18spit in his face. Then she must declare this is
- 3:22what happens to a man who refuses to provide his brother
- 3:25with children. Ever afterward in Israel, his
- 3:30family will be referred to as the family of the man whose
- 3:34sandal was pulled off. 2 Ezraelite men get into a fight
- 3:39and the wife of one tries to rescue her husband by grabbing
- 3:42the testicles of the other man. You must cut off her hand.
- 3:46Show her no pity. You must use accurate scales
- 3:51when you weigh out merchandise, and you must use full and honest
- 3:55measures. Yes, always use honest weights
- 3:58and measures so that you may enjoy a long life in the land
- 4:01the Lord your God is giving you. All who cheat with dishonest
- 4:06weights and measures are detestable to the Lord your God.
- 4:11Never forget what the Amalekites did to you as you came from
- 4:14Egypt. They attacked you when you were
- 4:16exhausted and weary, and they struck down those who were
- 4:20straggling behind. They had No Fear of God.
- 4:24Therefore, when the Lord your God has given you rest from all
- 4:27your enemies in the land He is giving you as a special
- 4:30possession, you must destroy the Amalekites and erase their
- 4:35memory from under heaven. Never forget this.
- 4:49Our Lord, you are a gracious God, a God who cares about
- 4:53justice in not just the big international movements in your
- 4:58world, but in the small everyday things, in the rights that a
- 5:03widow has not to be forgotten by society, for people not to be
- 5:07cheated as they go about their daily shopping errands in the
- 5:11markets. Lord, you want to see justice
- 5:15prevailing in all corners of every part of our world, or to
- 5:20pray that we would continue to have your heart for justice,
- 5:26that you would move our heart by the injustices of our world so
- 5:30that we can truly bring your Kingdom here in all the agency
- 5:34that we possess. We love you, Jesus, and we thank
- 5:39you that as well as bringing justice, you brought grace,
- 5:43grace that covers over all of our sins and brings us before
- 5:47you perfect through everything you've done for us.
- 5:50So we lift you up and praise you and pray all of this in your
- 5:54precious name, Amen.
