Speaker 1: Chapter one, Sire's prescription. Sire had counseled him on the
• 0:06
Speaker 1: voyage out, for he had repined ceaselessly at what he
• 0:10
Speaker 1: called their banishment to the Asiatic station to wait till
• 0:14
Speaker 1: they arrived. He had never regarded service in Japanese waters
• 0:18
Speaker 1: as banishment, he said, and he had been out twice before.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: Pinkerton had just come from the Mediterranean. For lack of
• 0:28
Speaker 1: other amusement, continued Sire with a laugh, you might get
• 0:33
Speaker 1: yourself married, and Pinkerton arrested him with a savage snort.
• 0:40
Speaker 1: You usually merely frivolous, Sire, but to day you are
• 0:44
Speaker 1: silly without manifest offense. Sire went on, when I was
• 0:50
Speaker 1: out here in eighteen ninety the story of the pink Geisha. Well, yes,
• 0:59
Speaker 1: admitted sire. Patiently, excuse me, then till you are through.
• 1:05
Speaker 1: He turned to go below. Heard it have you a
• 1:10
Speaker 1: thousand times from you and others. Sire laughed good naturedly
• 1:15
Speaker 1: at the gallant exaggeration, and passed Pinkerton his cigarette case.
• 1:20
Speaker 1: Ah ever heard who the man was? No, he lighted
• 1:26
Speaker 1: his cigarette. That has been your own little mystery. Apparently apparently, yes,
• 1:34
Speaker 1: we all know it was yourself. It wasn't, said Cyrus steadily.
• 1:41
Speaker 1: It was my brother. He looked away. Oh he's dead.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Beg pardon. You never told us that he went back
• 1:53
Speaker 1: couldn't find her. And you advise me also to become
• 1:57
Speaker 1: a subject for remorse. That's good of you. It's not
• 2:01
Speaker 1: quite the same thing. There is no danger of you
• 2:05
Speaker 1: losing your head, for he glanced uncertainly at Pinkerton, then
• 2:10
Speaker 1: ended lamely. Any one, the danger would probably be entirely
• 2:15
Speaker 1: with the other person, thanks, laughed Pinkerton. That's more comforting,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: and yet used, sire. You are hard to comfort humanely speaking,
• 2:31
Speaker 1: Pinkton smiled at this naive but quite exact characterization of himself.
• 2:37
Speaker 1: You are, continued Sire, hesitating for the right word, impervious exactly,
• 2:46
Speaker 1: laughed Pinkerton. I don't see much danger to myself in
• 2:49
Speaker 1: your prescription. You have put it in rather an attractive light.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: The idea cannot be entirely distributable. If your brother Jack
• 2:58
Speaker 1: used it, we lower class fellows used to call him agamemnon.
• 3:02
Speaker 1: You remember, it is not my prescription, said Sire, briefly,
• 3:08
Speaker 1: leaving the deck. Chapter two, mister B. F. Picqaton and
• 3:15
Speaker 1: his way, but Pinkaton not only got himself married, he
• 3:21
Speaker 1: provided himself with an establishment, creating his manage in quite
• 3:25
Speaker 1: his own way and entirely for his own comfort. With
• 3:29
Speaker 1: the aid of a marriage broker, he found both a
• 3:32
Speaker 1: wife and a house in which to keep her. This
• 3:35
Speaker 1: he leased for nine hundred and ninety nine years. Not
• 3:39
Speaker 1: he explained to his wife later that he could hope
• 3:42
Speaker 1: for the felicity of residing there with her so long,
• 3:45
Speaker 1: but because being a mere barbarian he could not make
• 3:49
Speaker 1: other legal terms, he did not mention that the lease
• 3:53
Speaker 1: was determinable. Nevertheless, at the end of any month by
• 3:57
Speaker 1: the me neglect to pay the rent. Details were distasteful
• 4:01
Speaker 1: to Pinkerton. Besides, she would probably not appreciate the humor
• 4:05
Speaker 1: of this. Some clever Japanese artisans then made the paper
• 4:11
Speaker 1: walls of the pretty House I proof, and with their
• 4:14
Speaker 1: own adaptations of American hardware, the openings cunningly locable. The
• 4:19
Speaker 1: rest was Japanese. Madame Butterfly laughed and asked him why
• 4:24
Speaker 1: he had gone to all that trouble in Japan, to
• 4:28
Speaker 1: keep out those who are out and in those who
• 4:31
Speaker 1: are in. He replied with an amorous threat in her direction.
• 4:37
Speaker 1: She was greatly pleased with it all, though, and went
• 4:40
Speaker 1: about jingling her new keys and her new authority like toys.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: She had only one small maid to command, until she
• 4:48
Speaker 1: learned that among others to be excluded were her own relatives.
• 4:53
Speaker 1: There had been what her husband called an appalling horde
• 4:57
Speaker 1: of these at the wedding. They had come with lanterns
• 5:00
Speaker 1: and banners and disturbing evidences of good will. And he
• 5:04
Speaker 1: asked her, when she questioned him, whether she did not
• 5:07
Speaker 1: think there would be a trifle wearisome. You think so,
• 5:12
Speaker 1: she asked, In turn, emphatically, said her husband. She grew pale.
• 5:19
Speaker 1: She had not expected quite such an answer. A Japanese
• 5:23
Speaker 1: would have said no, but would have left an interrogation
• 5:26
Speaker 1: in one's mind. He laughed consolingly. Huel anisan, which meant
• 5:33
Speaker 1: only elder sister. There are no terms of endearment in
• 5:37
Speaker 1: the Japanese language. You will have to get along without ancestors.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: Think of the many people who would like to do
• 5:44
Speaker 1: that and be comforted who she had never heard of
• 5:49
Speaker 1: such a thing. M people, for instance, whose ancestors have
• 5:54
Speaker 1: perished on the gallows, or in America have practiced trades.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: She did not understand as often she did not, and
• 6:03
Speaker 1: he went on, I shall have to serve in the
• 6:06
Speaker 1: capacity of ancestors. Let us say ancestors at large, and
• 6:11
Speaker 1: the real ones will have to go or rather not
• 6:14
Speaker 1: come again. He had the joke to himself. His wife
• 6:18
Speaker 1: had gone away to cry. At first, she decided to
• 6:22
Speaker 1: run away from him, but this, she reflected, would not
• 6:26
Speaker 1: probably please her relatives, since they had anonymously agreed upon
• 6:30
Speaker 1: the marriage for her. Besides, she preferred to remain. She
• 6:35
Speaker 1: had acquired a strange liking for Pinkerton and her new
• 6:38
Speaker 1: way of life. Finally, she undertook a weak remonstrance, a
• 6:42
Speaker 1: very strong one, in fact, for a Japanese wife. But
• 6:46
Speaker 1: Pinkerton encouraged her pretty domestic autonomy. Her airs of authority
• 6:51
Speaker 1: were charming, and they grew more and more so. Mister B. F.
• 6:57
Speaker 1: Piccaton it was this among us the things he had
• 7:00
Speaker 1: taught her to call him. I like, if you permit
• 7:04
Speaker 1: my august ancestors visit me. I like very much, if
• 7:10
Speaker 1: you please permit that unto me. Her hair had been
• 7:14
Speaker 1: newly dressed for the occasion, and she had stuck a
• 7:17
Speaker 1: poppy in it. Besides, she put her hand on his
• 7:21
Speaker 1: arm a brave thing for her to do, and smiled
• 7:24
Speaker 1: wistfully up at him. And when you know what Tortusan's
• 7:28
Speaker 1: smile was like, and her hand at its touch, you
• 7:32
Speaker 1: will wonder how Pinkerton resisted her. However, he only laughed
• 7:37
Speaker 1: at her good naturedly always, and said, no, we can't
• 7:42
Speaker 1: adopt the whole regiment of back numbers. You know you
• 7:46
Speaker 1: are back number enough for me. And though he kissed her,
• 7:50
Speaker 1: she went away and cried again, And Japanese girls do
• 7:53
Speaker 1: not often cry. He could not understand how important this
• 7:58
Speaker 1: concession was to her. It must be confessed that he
• 8:01
Speaker 1: did not try to understand. Sire, with a little partisanship
• 8:07
Speaker 1: explained to him that in Japan, filial affection is the
• 8:10
Speaker 1: paramount motive, and that these ancestors, living and dead, were
• 8:16
Speaker 1: his wife's sole link to such eternal life as she
• 8:19
Speaker 1: hoped for. He trusted that Pinkton would not forget this.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: He would provide her a new motive, then, Pinkton said,
• 8:28
Speaker 1: perhaps meaning himself, and a new religion, if she must
• 8:32
Speaker 1: have one himself again. So when she, at his motion,
• 8:37
Speaker 1: diffidently undertook to clothe on the phantoms which made up
• 8:40
Speaker 1: her religion, Pinkerton expounded what he called the easier Western
• 8:45
Speaker 1: plan of salvation. Seriously too, considering that all his communications
• 8:50
Speaker 1: to her were touched with whimsy. This was inevitable to Pinkerton,
• 8:56
Speaker 1: after all, she was quite an impossible little thing outside
• 9:00
Speaker 1: of lacquer and paint. But he struck deeper than he knew,
• 9:05
Speaker 1: for she went secretly to the church of the missionary
• 9:07
Speaker 1: who served on the opposite hill, and heard the same thing,
• 9:11
Speaker 1: and learned moreover that she might adopt this new religion
• 9:14
Speaker 1: at any time she chose, even the eleventh hour, she
• 9:18
Speaker 1: went out joyously, not to adopt his religion, it is true,
• 9:23
Speaker 1: but to hold it in reserve if her relatives should
• 9:25
Speaker 1: remain obdurate. Pinkerton, to his relief, heard no more of it.
• 9:32
Speaker 1: Chapter three a moon goddess truly, but his wife's family
• 9:39
Speaker 1: the word has a more important application there than here
• 9:43
Speaker 1: held a solemn conference, and as the result of it,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: certain of them waited upon Lieutenant Pinkerton, and with elaborate politeness,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: intimated that this course had theretofore been quite unknown in Japan.
• 9:58
Speaker 1: This was their oblique way of saying that it was unsatisfactory.
• 10:02
Speaker 1: They pointed out, with patient gravity that he would thus
• 10:06
Speaker 1: limit his wife's opportunities of reappearing on Earth in a
• 10:09
Speaker 1: higher form of life. Pinketon smilingly remarked that he was
• 10:14
Speaker 1: not sure that it would be best for his wife
• 10:17
Speaker 1: to appear on Earth in a higher form. She would
• 10:20
Speaker 1: probably accomplish mischief enough in this very charming one, as
• 10:24
Speaker 1: she was in fact doing. Do you know, he continued
• 10:28
Speaker 1: to the spokesman, that you look exactly like a lacked
• 10:32
Speaker 1: tragedy mask I have hanging over my desk. One must
• 10:36
Speaker 1: have seen one of these masks to appreciate this. But
• 10:40
Speaker 1: they all laughed good naturedly as their host had designed,
• 10:44
Speaker 1: and quite forgot their errand, and Pinkerton labored that they
• 10:48
Speaker 1: should remember it no more. This was quite Japanese in
• 10:52
Speaker 1: the politest way possible. He made them drink his liquors
• 10:55
Speaker 1: and smoke his tobacco in the generous Western fashion, either
• 11:00
Speaker 1: of which operations was certain to make a Japanese very ill.
• 11:04
Speaker 1: This was thoroughfull like Pinkerton. They protested a deal of
• 11:08
Speaker 1: friendship for Pinkerton that night, but at the final conference,
• 11:12
Speaker 1: where Chochou's son was solemnly disowned, none were more gloomily
• 11:16
Speaker 1: unfriendly than they who had eaten and drunken with him.
• 11:21
Speaker 1: I did the very best I could for you, little
• 11:23
Speaker 1: moon goddess, said Pinkerton to his wife. But they were
• 11:27
Speaker 1: proof against my best wine and tobacco. She bent her
• 11:32
Speaker 1: head in reflection a moment. Ah, you mean I begin
• 11:38
Speaker 1: to learn you, mister B. F. Pickeaton. You mean they
• 11:42
Speaker 1: not prove Ah, and Pinkerton delightedly embraced her. You are
• 11:49
Speaker 1: no longer a back number, he said, Aha, that's what
• 11:56
Speaker 1: I think. Now, I beg you. I know what is
• 12:00
Speaker 1: that back number? Well, people like I was exactly, but
• 12:08
Speaker 1: not people like I am. No, you're up to date,
• 12:15
Speaker 1: I expect. I ought to be sorry, she sighed hypocritically.
• 12:22
Speaker 1: Exactly why my moon mate account. They outcasting me. Everybody
• 12:29
Speaker 1: think me most best wicked in all Japan. Nobody speak
• 12:34
Speaker 1: to me no more. They all outcast me, except just you.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: That's why I ought to be sorry. She burst into
• 12:44
Speaker 1: a reckless laugh and threw herself like a child upon him. Ha ha,
• 12:49
Speaker 1: But that's exactly why I am not who was you, Slye?
• 12:55
Speaker 1: It is not inside me. That's sorry me. I'm more's
• 13:00
Speaker 1: best happy female woman in Japan. May be in that
• 13:04
Speaker 1: whole world what you think. He said honestly that he
• 13:10
Speaker 1: thought she was, and he took honest credit for it.
• 13:15
Speaker 1: And of section one, chapter four, Trouble meaning joy. And
• 13:23
Speaker 1: after his going in the whimsical Delight they had practiced together,
• 13:28
Speaker 1: she named the baby when it came Trouble. Every Japanese
• 13:32
Speaker 1: baby begins with a temporary name. It may be anything.
• 13:36
Speaker 1: Almost for the little time, she was quite sure he
• 13:40
Speaker 1: would like the way she had named him, Trouble meaning joy.
• 13:44
Speaker 1: This was his own oblique way. As for his permanent name,
• 13:48
Speaker 1: he might have several others before. That was for him
• 13:51
Speaker 1: to choose when he returned, And this event was to
• 13:55
Speaker 1: happen according to his own words, when the robins nested
• 13:58
Speaker 1: again and spring and the robins had come. All this
• 14:04
Speaker 1: to explain why Madame Butterfly and her baby were reclining
• 14:08
Speaker 1: on the immaculate mats in attitudes of artistic abandon instead
• 14:12
Speaker 1: of keeping an august state, as all other Japanese mothers
• 14:16
Speaker 1: and babes were at this moment doing. American women, we
• 14:20
Speaker 1: are told, assume more fearless attitudes in the security of
• 14:24
Speaker 1: their boudoirs than elsewhere. Japanese women, never their conduct is
• 14:30
Speaker 1: eternally the same. It must be as if some one
• 14:33
Speaker 1: were looking on always. There is no privacy for them
• 14:38
Speaker 1: short of the grave. They have no secure boudoirs. But
• 14:43
Speaker 1: Madame Butterfly, through the courtesy of her American husband, had
• 14:47
Speaker 1: both these. It will therefore be argued, perhaps that she
• 14:51
Speaker 1: is not a typical Japanese woman. But it is only
• 14:54
Speaker 1: Lieutenant Pinkerton's view about which we are presently concerned. He
• 14:59
Speaker 1: called her an American refinement of a Japanese product, an
• 15:03
Speaker 1: American improvement in a Japanese invention, and so on. And
• 15:08
Speaker 1: since he knew her best, his words concerning her should
• 15:11
Speaker 1: have a certain ex cathedral authority. I know no more.
• 15:18
Speaker 1: And she and the maid, and the baby too were
• 15:21
Speaker 1: discussing precisely the matters which have interested us hitherto Pinkerton,
• 15:26
Speaker 1: his baby, his imminent return, et cetera. Tooto's son, with
• 15:31
Speaker 1: a deft jerk that was also a caress, brought the
• 15:34
Speaker 1: baby into her lap as she sat suddenly up, Ah,
• 15:39
Speaker 1: you you think he's just like any other baby. But
• 15:43
Speaker 1: he's a miracle, yes, she insisted belligerently. The Sun Goddess
• 15:49
Speaker 1: sent him straight from the bridge of heaven because of
• 15:52
Speaker 1: those prayers. So early, oh, so very early in the morning. Oh,
• 15:57
Speaker 1: that is the time to pray. She turned the baby
• 16:01
Speaker 1: violently so that she might see his eyes. Now did
• 16:05
Speaker 1: anyone ever hear of a Japanese baby with purple eyes?
• 16:09
Speaker 1: She held him over against the dwarfed wisteria, which grew
• 16:13
Speaker 1: in a flat bronze coral at the Tokonoma full of
• 16:16
Speaker 1: purple blossoms. She addressed the maid Suzuki, who stood by,
• 16:20
Speaker 1: happy as herself, apparently aware that this subject must always
• 16:25
Speaker 1: be discussed vehemently as purple as that answer me without giggler?
• 16:31
Speaker 1: Is it not so? Speak? I will have an answer?
• 16:37
Speaker 1: Then the maid laughed out a joyous snow. If she
• 16:40
Speaker 1: cherished the Eastern reservations concerning blue eyes and pink cheeks,
• 16:44
Speaker 1: it was a less heinous offense to lie about it
• 16:47
Speaker 1: a little than to assert it in politely. Besides, neither
• 16:51
Speaker 1: she nor anyone else could resist the spirits of her
• 16:54
Speaker 1: pretty mistress, and these spirits had grown joyously righteous since
• 16:59
Speaker 1: her marriage. And did unfettering, nor yet so bold of
• 17:03
Speaker 1: his head, say so quickly she insisted with the manner
• 17:08
Speaker 1: of pinkerton such as example. The mate also agreed to this,
• 17:14
Speaker 1: and then Choto San flung the kicking youngster high above her,
• 17:19
Speaker 1: turned abandonedly over on her back in charming, if forbidden postures,
• 17:24
Speaker 1: and juggled with him there. But ah, you will have here,
• 17:28
Speaker 1: will you? Not as long and glittering as that of
• 17:31
Speaker 1: the American women? I will not endure the else. She
• 17:36
Speaker 1: became speciously savage speak, thou beggar speak, goo goo, said
• 17:44
Speaker 1: the baby, endeavoring diligently to obey. She shook him threateningly. Ah,
• 17:51
Speaker 1: you making that nonsense with your parents? Now, what is
• 17:56
Speaker 1: that you speaking with me Japanese? If it is I?
• 18:01
Speaker 1: She threatened him direly, but he had evidently already learned
• 18:05
Speaker 1: to understand her. He gurgled again, Listen, no one shall
• 18:10
Speaker 1: speak anything but United States languages in these houses. Now
• 18:15
Speaker 1: what you think you're gone? Go right outside, Shouji, first
• 18:19
Speaker 1: thing you do that. She resumed her own English more ostentatiously.
• 18:24
Speaker 1: She forgot it herself sometimes and pretended to pitch the
• 18:28
Speaker 1: baby through the fragile paper wall. Also, there's one thing
• 18:33
Speaker 1: averybody got ray complex account. It is his house, his wife,
• 18:38
Speaker 1: his baby, his maiden, his money. Oh, averything is his
• 18:45
Speaker 1: And he say those times he gone way that, except
• 18:48
Speaker 1: we all talking those United States languages. When he come,
• 18:52
Speaker 1: he gon't bounce us all. Well, I don't get meself
• 18:57
Speaker 1: bounce mister trouble, and you got look look out. You
• 19:00
Speaker 1: don't uh huh say me. I think if we're doing
• 19:06
Speaker 1: all those things, he as us. He's gone take us
• 19:09
Speaker 1: at those United States America and live in his castle.
• 19:14
Speaker 1: Then he never can bounce us. Uh huh. Chapter five,
• 19:22
Speaker 1: A Song of Sorrow and Death and Heaven. A bird
• 19:26
Speaker 1: flew to the vine in the little porch, Ah, Suzuki,
• 19:32
Speaker 1: but the maid had withdrawn. She clapped her hands violently
• 19:35
Speaker 1: for her to return. Now, why do you go away?
• 19:40
Speaker 1: When her momentary anger fled, and she laughed when birds
• 19:45
Speaker 1: flying to the vistaria, Go quickly, little maiden, and see
• 19:49
Speaker 1: if he's a robin, and if he has completed his
• 19:51
Speaker 1: nest Quickly. The maid returned and said that he was
• 19:57
Speaker 1: indeed a robin, but that he had no necessary yet.
• 20:01
Speaker 1: Oh how is his slow, Suzuki. Let us find another robin,
• 20:08
Speaker 1: one that is more industrious and domestic. Ha ha ha ha.
• 20:14
Speaker 1: They are all alike, said the girl cynically. They not
• 20:20
Speaker 1: say so, Susuki giggled, affirmatively. When her mistress took so
• 20:26
Speaker 1: violently to English, she preferred to express herself in this
• 20:30
Speaker 1: truly Japanese fashion. Inform me, if you please, how much
• 20:35
Speaker 1: nearer beggary we are today than yesterday? Susuki the girl
• 20:40
Speaker 1: had exact information for her on this subject. She said,
• 20:43
Speaker 1: they had just seventeen yen fifty four cent turin alas alas,
• 20:51
Speaker 1: how we have wasted his beautiful monies. That's shame. But
• 20:56
Speaker 1: he will not permit that we starve a count He
• 21:00
Speaker 1: know we have no one except him, We all outcasted. Now,
• 21:06
Speaker 1: look how that is bad. So just when it is
• 21:09
Speaker 1: all gone, he will come with more like the stories
• 21:13
Speaker 1: of all kazabu, Oh, like story of uncombed Dronen, who
• 21:18
Speaker 1: make a large oath that he gone be huge fool.
• 21:21
Speaker 1: Well if he dress his hair until his lord arrives
• 21:24
Speaker 1: back from the banishment, lo, when they're cutting his head
• 21:29
Speaker 1: off him, a county don't come his hair. His lord
• 21:32
Speaker 1: arrive back and say what they're doing with him and
• 21:36
Speaker 1: reward him great deal, a county constant until he most dead.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: So just when we gone out on the street, maybe
• 21:46
Speaker 1: to find him, you with trouble on your back, me
• 21:49
Speaker 1: with my Sami sen standing up before all the people,
• 21:53
Speaker 1: singing funeral songs with faces oh about most so long,
• 21:59
Speaker 1: she illustrates liberally, said, garments here all ruffled, so dancing
• 22:04
Speaker 1: little so she indicated how she should dance, and saying
• 22:10
Speaker 1: out very loud, oh ye, people listen for the loaf
• 22:15
Speaker 1: of all the eight hundred thousand gods and goddesses. Behold
• 22:19
Speaker 1: we a poor widow and the bebby what God purple eyes,
• 22:23
Speaker 1: which had husband whid gone off at United States America
• 22:27
Speaker 1: to neighver return no more neighver except you have seen him. No,
• 22:34
Speaker 1: see this is what I think. Oh, how that is
• 22:38
Speaker 1: most terrible? We giving up all our august ancestors and
• 22:43
Speaker 1: gods and people and country, oh avery thing, just for him.
• 22:49
Speaker 1: And now he don't never come no more. Oh how
• 22:53
Speaker 1: that is said? Is it not? Also he don't even
• 22:57
Speaker 1: divorce us so that we can marry with nothing the
• 23:00
Speaker 1: man's and get some food. He he don't even think
• 23:04
Speaker 1: about us, not little bit he forgetting us. Alas, but
• 23:11
Speaker 1: we got to keep his house nine hundred and ninety
• 23:13
Speaker 1: nine years. Now, think about that, and we're gonna starve
• 23:19
Speaker 1: before except you giving us ah um just one cent,
• 23:26
Speaker 1: two cent, maybe five sen all for the loave of sorrow,
• 23:31
Speaker 1: for the loave of constancy, for the loave of death,
• 23:35
Speaker 1: just one cent. Will you please pity us in the
• 23:41
Speaker 1: name of the merciful Quanon, we beg look to move
• 23:46
Speaker 1: your hearts in the inside you were gone, sing you
• 23:50
Speaker 1: a song of sorrow and death and heaven. She had
• 23:55
Speaker 1: acted it all with superb spirit, And now she snatched
• 23:59
Speaker 1: up her summi sense and dramatized this also. And so
• 24:03
Speaker 1: sure was she of life and happiness that this is
• 24:06
Speaker 1: the song of sorrow and death. She sang Hikari no okei,
• 24:11
Speaker 1: kiharu no nobe, nivo, sakura, Nohanna, sakari, mure kuru, hito
• 24:17
Speaker 1: no tanoshikini, shibashi uki yo ya vasururam. Sunshine on a
• 24:24
Speaker 1: quiet plain in spring, the perfume of the blossoming cherry blossoms,
• 24:29
Speaker 1: the joy of the gathering crowd filled with love, forget
• 24:33
Speaker 1: the care of life, and then as always, abandonment and laughter.
• 24:40
Speaker 1: Ah ha ha, what do you think, little maiden, there's
• 24:45
Speaker 1: good song about sorrow and death and heaven. Ah what
• 24:50
Speaker 1: do you think? Speak say so? She tossed the samisen
• 24:56
Speaker 1: to its place and sprang savagely at the maid. If
• 25:00
Speaker 1: that mister b f Picaton see us doing Alec does
• 25:04
Speaker 1: ventured the maid in the humor of her mistress. Oh
• 25:09
Speaker 1: you see his eye flame and scoorge like lightning. Oh
• 25:14
Speaker 1: he snatches away to the house. So so so the
• 25:20
Speaker 1: baby was the unfortunate subject for the illustration of this.
• 25:23
Speaker 1: He began to whimper, rockabye baby off in Japan. You're
• 25:28
Speaker 1: just a picture of a fan. This was from Pinkerton.
• 25:33
Speaker 1: She had been the baby. Then, ah, little beggar. He
• 25:37
Speaker 1: didn't know. He can't make those poetries for you. He
• 25:41
Speaker 1: don't suspect of you. Whichever, well, I bet you we
• 25:45
Speaker 1: gon't have some fun when he do. Oh, Suzuki, some
• 25:49
Speaker 1: day when the Emperor go abroad, we will show him.
• 25:53
Speaker 1: You got say the way she changed her voice to
• 25:56
Speaker 1: what she fancied an impressive male bustle whole heaven, descend
• 26:01
Speaker 1: the jewler, everlasting, great Japan. The first of your subjects
• 26:05
Speaker 1: taken his eye out. Those were blue heaven. Whence you
• 26:08
Speaker 1: are descent Hence the Emperor look on him. Then he
• 26:13
Speaker 1: stop and look. He can never get enough luks. Then
• 26:17
Speaker 1: he make trouble A large prince and me. He just
• 26:22
Speaker 1: say unto me, continue that you bring out such sons
• 26:27
Speaker 1: ha ha, what do you think? The maid was frankly skeptical.
• 26:36
Speaker 1: At least you kin do like the old Nakodo, wish
• 26:39
Speaker 1: you for you are most beautiful. Tu Tu San dropped
• 26:44
Speaker 1: the baby with a reckless thud and sprang at her again.
• 26:48
Speaker 1: She gripped her throat viciously, then flung her laughing aside.
• 26:53
Speaker 1: Speak concerning marriage once more, and you die. And that's
• 26:57
Speaker 1: not a thing you got No at United States America,
• 27:01
Speaker 1: if one is merry, one god, stay merry, oh for
• 27:05
Speaker 1: Aver and Aver. Yes, nobody cannot get himself divorced except
• 27:12
Speaker 1: in a large courthouse and jail. That's way with he,
• 27:17
Speaker 1: that mister b F. Pickeaton, and me, that missus b F. Picketon.
• 27:23
Speaker 1: If he evera goone divorce me, he could take me
• 27:26
Speaker 1: at those large jail at that United States America. There's
• 27:30
Speaker 1: a lot of trouble. Hence he rather stay merry with me. Also,
• 27:35
Speaker 1: he'd like be merry with me now. Look, he'll leave
• 27:40
Speaker 1: me a most large slot money in Japan. He give
• 27:44
Speaker 1: me his house for livingside for nine hundred and ninety
• 27:48
Speaker 1: nine year. I cannot go home at my grandmother account.
• 27:52
Speaker 1: He make them out cast me, say, you little foolish
• 27:57
Speaker 1: he coming when the robins nest again? Oh mah, what
• 28:01
Speaker 1: you think? Say so? The maid should have been excused
• 28:06
Speaker 1: for not being always as recklessly jubilant as her mistress,
• 28:11
Speaker 1: But she never was. And now when she chose silence
• 28:14
Speaker 1: rather than speech, which was both more prudent and more polite,
• 28:19
Speaker 1: she took it very ill. Chapter six, Divine foolery. If
• 28:28
Speaker 1: Pinkerton had told her to go home, even though she
• 28:31
Speaker 1: had no home to go to, she would have been
• 28:34
Speaker 1: divorced without more ado. Perhaps she was logical, for she
• 28:39
Speaker 1: reasoned as he had taught her. She had never reasoned
• 28:42
Speaker 1: before in considering that as he had distinctly told her
• 28:46
Speaker 1: not to do so, it was an additional sure tea
• 28:48
Speaker 1: for his return. Chocho's san again took up the happier
• 28:53
Speaker 1: side of the matter. The baby was asleep, and also
• 28:59
Speaker 1: what you think we'd had a doing when he come?
• 29:02
Speaker 1: She was less forcible now because less certain. This required
• 29:06
Speaker 1: planning to get the utmost felicity out of it. What
• 29:10
Speaker 1: she always strove for me. I think I don't know,
• 29:17
Speaker 1: the maid confessed diplomatically, a ha ha, you do know,
• 29:22
Speaker 1: of course you do know. Which ever, well, I gon't
• 29:26
Speaker 1: tell you the plan had been born and matured that
• 29:30
Speaker 1: instant in her active little brain just recollect'tis a secret
• 29:35
Speaker 1: among you and me. We don't tell that mister trouble hosh,
• 29:40
Speaker 1: he don't can keep no secret. Well listen, we're gone
• 29:45
Speaker 1: watch with that spying glass till his ship get in.
• 29:48
Speaker 1: Then we're gone. Put cherry blossoms averywhere and if to night,
• 29:53
Speaker 1: we're gon't hang out about most one thousand lanterns about
• 29:57
Speaker 1: most one thousand. Then we wait just when we see
• 30:02
Speaker 1: him coming up that hill so so so so, she
• 30:07
Speaker 1: lifted her kimono and strode masculinely about the apartment. Then
• 30:13
Speaker 1: we hide behind the shoji where there are holes to peep.
• 30:17
Speaker 1: She glanced about to find them, alas they all meant
• 30:21
Speaker 1: the chat, but she savagely ran her finger through the paper.
• 30:27
Speaker 1: We soon make some ah ha ha ha. So she
• 30:31
Speaker 1: made another for the maid. They illustrated this phase of
• 30:35
Speaker 1: her mood with their eyes at the holes. Then we
• 30:38
Speaker 1: lie quiet like mice and make believe we gone way
• 30:43
Speaker 1: bet and we leave little note gone away forever, sayonara, butterfly,
• 30:50
Speaker 1: No that's too long for him. He get angry those
• 30:54
Speaker 1: ways on the first word, and say those remark about
• 30:57
Speaker 1: debil and hell and all kind loud lngs witches. There's
• 31:01
Speaker 1: time before he getting too angry to rush out and
• 31:05
Speaker 1: jump all round his neck. Uh huh. This was also illustrated,
• 31:11
Speaker 1: but alas the maid was too realistic, say not you
• 31:17
Speaker 1: jump round his neck just me. Chocho's son paused ecstatically,
• 31:24
Speaker 1: but the maid would not have it. So she had
• 31:26
Speaker 1: seen them practice such divine foolery, very like too reckless children,
• 31:31
Speaker 1: But never had she seen anything with such dramatic promise
• 31:35
Speaker 1: as this. Oh and what he say? Then? She begged
• 31:40
Speaker 1: with wild interest, and what he'd do? Madame Butterfly was
• 31:46
Speaker 1: re energized by the maid's applause. Ah, she sighed, he
• 31:52
Speaker 1: don't say, just he kiss us all about three seven
• 31:57
Speaker 1: ten a thousand times and embarrass us two thousand time.
• 32:02
Speaker 1: Bout moss. That's what he'd do till we God make
• 32:06
Speaker 1: him stop a count. He might might kill us. That's
• 32:12
Speaker 1: very bad to be killed. Kissing. Her extravagant mood infected
• 32:17
Speaker 1: the maid. She had long ago begun to wonder whether,
• 32:21
Speaker 1: after all, this American passion of affection was altogether despicable.
• 32:26
Speaker 1: She remembered that her mistress had begun by regarding it thus,
• 32:30
Speaker 1: Yet now she was the most daringly happy woman in Japan.
• 32:34
Speaker 1: Say more, the maid pleaded Chocho's son had a fine fancy,
• 32:40
Speaker 1: and the nesting of the robins could not, at the
• 32:42
Speaker 1: longest be much longer delayed. Now she let it ry
• 32:45
Speaker 1: it well. She was making it up as she went.
• 32:51
Speaker 1: When that's all done, he look round those ways, like
• 32:55
Speaker 1: he doing most always, and he sees something and he say, oh,
• 33:01
Speaker 1: ell loo, ell loo, where you got that child? I say, ah, oh,
• 33:11
Speaker 1: I think maybe you lick on one and I buy
• 33:15
Speaker 1: him off a man within one, no baby with those
• 33:18
Speaker 1: purple eye and bald hairs. And he asked me what
• 33:22
Speaker 1: you pay? Americans always ask what you pay? I say, oh,
• 33:28
Speaker 1: let me see. I think two yen and twusen. There's
• 33:33
Speaker 1: too much for bald baby. What you think. But there's
• 33:37
  Speaker 1: a time he's saying, I bet you there's a liar,
• 33:42
Speaker 1: and you're fooling among me. Then he getting angry, and
• 33:46
Speaker 1: I hurry and say, one last time, that's right, I
• 33:50
Speaker 1: told you little life for a fun. I didn't pay
• 33:54
Speaker 1: nahhing for him, except say then I whisper a thing
• 34:00
Speaker 1: inside his ear, just a little thing, and he see
• 34:04
Speaker 1: hah hah hah. Then he say once more a last time. Ah,
• 34:11
Speaker 1: what she thinks, Suzuki. But the girl would not diminish
• 34:14
Speaker 1: her pleasure by guessing, God Almighty, that's all things you know,
• 34:22
Speaker 1: questioned the maid, reproachfully and all things you do. She
• 34:27
Speaker 1: had a right to feel that she had been defrauded
• 34:29
Speaker 1: out of a property movement. Ah, what would you have?
• 34:33
Speaker 1: That is more? Just joy and glory forever more. That's enough.
• 34:39
Speaker 1: What you think? You know? That song tis life. When
• 34:43
Speaker 1: we meet tis death when we part. Her mistress had
• 34:48
Speaker 1: grown plaintive in those two lines. I hear him sing
• 34:52
Speaker 1: that murmured the maid comfortingly. Her spirits volted up again.
• 34:59
Speaker 1: But ah ah, you ever hear him sing. She snatched
• 35:04
Speaker 1: up the Sammi sen again, and to its accompaniment, saying
• 35:07
Speaker 1: in the pretty argonne he had taught her, making it
• 35:10
Speaker 1: as grotesque as possible, the more to amuse him. I
• 35:15
Speaker 1: call her the Bell of Japan, of Japan. Her name
• 35:18
Speaker 1: is Ochocho San, Chocho San. Such tenderness lies in her
• 35:23
Speaker 1: soft almond eyes. I tell you she's just I chibun,
• 35:27
Speaker 1: that's me. Uh huh ha ha. Say you think he
• 35:31
Speaker 1: ever going away again? When he got that little child
• 35:35
Speaker 1: and the sammi sen and the songs and all the
• 35:38
Speaker 1: joy and me and another richly joyous laugh. Oh you
• 35:46
Speaker 1: and the samisen and joy poof, said the maid. But
• 35:50
Speaker 1: the child, that's not a kind thing, except he grow
• 35:55
Speaker 1: up and go way after his father. She was odiously
• 35:59
Speaker 1: unsatisfyed fight she would leave nothing to fate to heaven shaka,
• 36:05
Speaker 1: but out of her joyous future her mistress satisfied even
• 36:08
Speaker 1: this grisly doubt. Ah, but we can't have more like
• 36:14
Speaker 1: steps of a leather up up up and all purple eyes,
• 36:18
Speaker 1: oh avery one and all males. Then if one go away,
• 36:24
Speaker 1: we got another another another. Then how can he that
• 36:30
Speaker 1: mister B. F. Picaton ever go away? Uh huh y
• 36:36
Speaker 1: ate Okoto son. If you was this a no doubt,
• 36:40
Speaker 1: it will never be known. Stop that's another thing you
• 36:45
Speaker 1: got call me Ototo son and missus Benjamin Frank Gadlin Piccaton.
• 36:51
Speaker 1: Say you notice how that sound grand when my husband
• 36:55
Speaker 1: speaking it? That a ways? Yes, most like I was
• 36:59
Speaker 1: a empress. Listen, I tell you another thing, which is
• 37:04
Speaker 1: not a secret among you and me. Just I think
• 37:08
Speaker 1: it is more nice to be called that away, just
• 37:11
Speaker 1: missus Benjamin Frangalin piccaton than heaven descended female ruler everlasting
• 37:19
Speaker 1: great Japan. Uh huh, say, how I look if I
• 37:24
Speaker 1: an empress? What you think she imitated a pose and
• 37:29
Speaker 1: expression of her empress? Very well? If your face a
• 37:33
Speaker 1: little longer, you look exag like, said the mate. But
• 37:39
Speaker 1: her mistress was inclined to be more modest. Ah. No,
• 37:45
Speaker 1: but I tell you who look like an emperor? Just
• 37:49
Speaker 1: ezag that mister B. F. Pickerton when he got that
• 37:53
Speaker 1: unicorn upon him with gold all up in front and
• 37:57
Speaker 1: down behind, and at this gentle treason, there was no
• 38:02
Speaker 1: protest from the patriotic maid. End of Section two, chapter seven,
• 38:10
Speaker 1: how he didn't understand her. Whichever, the baby continued to sleep.
• 38:16
Speaker 1: He rather justified the praises of his mother. He was
• 38:19
Speaker 1: as good as a Japanese baby, and as good looking
• 38:22
Speaker 1: as an American one. Somebody was without There was a
• 38:27
Speaker 1: polite and subdued clattering of clogs in the entrance. Gomena'say,
• 38:33
Speaker 1: I beg your pardon. It was a familiar deprecatory voice,
• 38:38
Speaker 1: accompanied by the clapping of hands. Trotousan smiled wearily and
• 38:43
Speaker 1: called the maid, Oh, suzuki gorod nakodo, his is without shaka,
• 38:49
Speaker 1: and all the gods defend us now. The two exchanged
• 38:53
Speaker 1: glances of amusement, and the maid proceeded to admit him.
• 38:57
Speaker 1: Madame Butterfly received him with the odious leg of ceremony.
• 39:00
Speaker 1: Her independent life with Pinkerton had bred, she was imperially indifferent.
• 39:06
Speaker 1: The go between pointed out, how sad this was to
• 39:09
Speaker 1: as beautiful a woman as she. Is It a trouble
• 39:13
Speaker 1: to you, she asked, perking her head aside. The Nakodo
• 39:18
Speaker 1: only sighed gloomily. Madame Butterfly laughed, Poor, nice little old man,
• 39:25
Speaker 1: said she, with spacious pity in politest English. Do not
• 39:29
Speaker 1: trouble about me. Do not arrive any more if it
• 39:32
Speaker 1: pains you, I must. You have no parents now, nor
• 39:37
Speaker 1: any one. You are outcast. Ah, but will you not
• 39:44
Speaker 1: permit me to suffer the lack? But you will never
• 39:48
Speaker 1: be married again? Well? Yes again? Then how terrible? He
• 39:57
Speaker 1: took this quite seriously and became what cheerfu? Yes, a
• 40:02
Speaker 1: beautiful woman like you must have a husband. Yes, thanks,
• 40:07
Speaker 1: I got one. Do you perhaps mean more. I mean
• 40:12
Speaker 1: a Japanese husband. Oh ah, that will have me a
• 40:17
Speaker 1: month and then divorce me, and then another and another
• 40:21
Speaker 1: and another. She was becoming belligerent. How is it better
• 40:26
Speaker 1: with you now? She recovered her good humor. At America,
• 40:32
Speaker 1: one is married forever except the other day. Uh huh,
• 40:37
Speaker 1: what you think your marriages are? Not so? She had
• 40:41
Speaker 1: been speaking indifferently both languages, and now the Nakodo, who
• 40:45
Speaker 1: was not apt at English, begged her to explain this
• 40:48
Speaker 1: in Japanese. She did so. YAMADORI has lived long at America,
• 40:53
Speaker 1: and he says it is not Thus is it not
• 40:57
Speaker 1: safe to rely upon his excellent wisdom? No, for I
• 41:01
Speaker 1: which am foolish, a wiser than both you and he.
• 41:05
Speaker 1: I know you just guess everybody, God, stay merry in
• 41:10
Speaker 1: United States America. No one can get divorced except he
• 41:14
Speaker 1: stay in a large courthouse, all full judges with long
• 41:18
Speaker 1: faces and bald on their heads, long long time, maybe
• 41:23
Speaker 1: two four seven years now. Just think about that, how
• 41:28
Speaker 1: that is tiresome. That's why no one don't get no divorce.
• 41:32
Speaker 1: They too tired to wait. First. The men he got,
• 41:37
Speaker 1: go and stand before those judge and tell all he
• 41:40
Speaker 1: think about it, then the woman she got, then some
• 41:44
Speaker 1: lawyers quarrel with those judge, and then the judges get
• 41:48
Speaker 1: jury and ask them what they think about it, and
• 41:52
Speaker 1: if they don't know, they all get put in jail
• 41:55
Speaker 1: till they get done thinking about it, and whether they
• 41:58
Speaker 1: gon't get divorced or not. Uh huh, where did you
• 42:02
Speaker 1: learn that? Asked the old nakodo. Aghast oh ah, that
• 42:08
Speaker 1: mister B. F. Piccaton. She assumed the grander air that
• 42:14
Speaker 1: mister Benjamin Frank Gelin Pickaton my husband. She smiled engagingly
• 42:20
Speaker 1: and held out her pretty hands as who should say,
• 42:23
Speaker 1: is not that sufficient? It was so evidently the invention
• 42:28
Speaker 1: of Pinkerton that it seemed superfluous to make the explanation.
• 42:32
Speaker 1: The nakodo said purtly that he did not believe in it,
• 42:36
Speaker 1: not believe what mister B. F. Pinkerton had said. Chochos
• 42:40
Speaker 1: Sun was exasperated the engaging smile had been wasted. She
• 42:45
Speaker 1: flung the blue eyed baby up before him. Well then,
• 42:49
Speaker 1: do you believe that? She laughed, almost malignantly. The marriage
• 42:55
Speaker 1: broker gulped down this fearful indignity as best he might.
• 42:59
Speaker 1: He hoped there were not going to be any more
• 43:01
Speaker 1: such women in Japan as the result of foreign marriages. Still,
• 43:06
Speaker 1: even this phase of the situation had been discussed with
• 43:09
Speaker 1: his client. But Yamadori, who was bred to the law,
• 43:13
Speaker 1: tells me that our law prevails in such a matter.
• 43:16
Speaker 1: The marriage havn't taken place here. She gave a gasp
• 43:20
Speaker 1: and cried like a savage, wounded animal. Yamadori lies. The
• 43:26
Speaker 1: nakodo was silenced. She crushed the baby so fiercely to
• 43:29
Speaker 1: her breast that he began to cry. Sh she commanded harshly.
• 43:35
Speaker 1: He looked up for an incredulous instant, then burrowed his
• 43:38
Speaker 1: head affrightedly into her kumuno. She turned upon the nakodo
• 43:42
Speaker 1: in magnificent scorn. Oh, you fool, well you think he
• 43:48
Speaker 1: never arrived back? That's what you think? In secret? He
• 43:52
Speaker 1: he do. She snatched a photograph from an easel at
• 43:56
Speaker 1: the Tokonoma, tore the child from his hiding, and held
• 44:00
Speaker 1: them up together. Her purpose was quite evident. The nakodo
• 44:05
Speaker 1: was thoroughfully frightened. She recovered her poise and her control
• 44:09
Speaker 1: of the situation. Now what you think, ha ha ha,
• 44:13
Speaker 1: say I bet you all monies he gone come most
• 44:18
Speaker 1: one million smiles for see that child. That's what I
• 44:21
Speaker 1: all times praying, Shaka and the august ness is for
• 44:25
Speaker 1: one child exact like him. Well, say I got him.
• 44:30
Speaker 1: And now that mister Benjamin Frank Garlin Piccarton he got
• 44:35
Speaker 1: come back hoory even if he don't like he cannot
• 44:39
Speaker 1: stand it, but he do. Like all her passion was
• 44:44
Speaker 1: gone now and her shurt gladness returned. She was naive
• 44:48
Speaker 1: and intimate and confidential again. Say, first I pray this
• 44:54
Speaker 1: large American God, that huge God Almighty, but there's no use.
• 44:58
Speaker 1: He don't know me where I live. Then I pray
• 45:01
Speaker 1: Shakha and all the crimier of the augustness in the
• 45:04
Speaker 1: god house. I think they don't hear me, account they
• 45:08
Speaker 1: outcasted me when I marry with that mister B. F. Picaton,
• 45:12
Speaker 1: But she smiled at her pretty celestial cajewelry. I pray
• 45:17
Speaker 1: them so long and so much more than they ever
• 45:20
Speaker 1: been prayed with before that they feel good all times,
• 45:24
Speaker 1: and there was finality in this and is use and
• 45:30
Speaker 1: maybe I'm not all outcasted. Don't tell him. He he
• 45:35
Speaker 1: laugh upon my gods and say they just would and
• 45:38
Speaker 1: got no works in them. And he all times called
• 45:41
Speaker 1: the augustness's bag numbers. Just he don't know till he
• 45:45
Speaker 1: find out, uh huh. If he returns, he will probably
• 45:51
Speaker 1: take the child away with him. That is his right,
• 45:54
Speaker 1: chanted his sad face, Nakodo. But nothing could ruffle Madame Butterfly. Now,
• 46:00
Speaker 1: she laughed sibilantly at this owl like ignorance. Oh how
• 46:05
Speaker 1: you don't know things, How you don't understand me what
• 46:11
Speaker 1: I mean? Whichever, of course, he take that child away
• 46:15
Speaker 1: with him, of course, and me me also, and Zuzuki,
• 46:20
Speaker 1: uh huh, and we go and live in his castle
• 46:23
Speaker 1: for ever and ever. The improbability of changing the girl's
• 46:28
Speaker 1: point of view began to dawn upon the slow intellect
• 46:31
Speaker 1: of the nakodo. At least Yamadori wishes for a look
• 46:35
Speaker 1: at meeting I have promised him. Will you not grant this?
• 46:41
Speaker 1: Chocho San shook her head at him knowingly. And if
• 46:45
Speaker 1: I do not, he not, gon't pay you one present?
• 46:48
Speaker 1: She laughed wildly, and the Nakodo, by a grin admitted
• 46:52
Speaker 1: the impeachment. Well, the spirit of mischief possessed the girl, say,
• 46:58
Speaker 1: I don't care. Let him come. He like for see me,
• 47:03
Speaker 1: I like for see him, And if I say I
• 47:06
Speaker 1: gone marry him, he got hoary and marry me right away.
• 47:10
Speaker 1: Uh huh, what do you think about those? The nakodo
• 47:15
Speaker 1: said delightedly that that was precisely what he sought. Yeaes,
• 47:20
Speaker 1: But suppose they put me in a large jail and
• 47:23
Speaker 1: got look out between bar so she illustrated, And don't
• 47:28
Speaker 1: get gnawhing for it. He gon't stay all times behind
• 47:32
Speaker 1: my side and comforting me, hold my hand, let me
• 47:36
Speaker 1: weep upon him. I don't know. Maybe they cut my
• 47:41
Speaker 1: head off me then he got git his hate cut
• 47:44
Speaker 1: off too, and go the road to meddle together with
• 47:48
Speaker 1: without those hate. Oh how that is terrible. And suppose
• 47:54
Speaker 1: she whispered it horridly that mister b f picaton ha
• 47:59
Speaker 1: ha ha right. The nakoda was not sure how much
• 48:05
Speaker 1: of this was meant seriously. They were extremely unusual humors
• 48:10
Speaker 1: to him, but she had consented to the meeting, and
• 48:12
Speaker 1: he promptly took her at her words. When then will
• 48:17
Speaker 1: it please you to have me bring yamadori when you like,
• 48:21
Speaker 1: nice little old friend? The nakoda fixed that day a week.
• 48:27
Speaker 1: As he was going, cho Cho San laughingly asked say
• 48:32
Speaker 1: how often he been merry. But twice the Nakoda replied virtuously,
• 48:39
Speaker 1: and both times divorce. He admitted that this was the case,
• 48:45
Speaker 1: and both times just on visit from United States America,
• 48:49
Speaker 1: just little visit. So long she spread her hands under
• 48:55
Speaker 1: her laughing gaze, it seemed best to admit it. Oh,
• 48:59
Speaker 1: he he just marry another for fun whenever he think
• 49:03
Speaker 1: about it. Then he forget it when he don't think
• 49:06
Speaker 1: about it, and marry another. Say so. He heard her
• 49:10
Speaker 1: laugh again as he left the courtyard. But he had
• 49:13
Speaker 1: confidence in the ability of Yamadori to accomplish his purpose
• 49:17
Speaker 1: if he could be brought into contact with her. He
• 49:20
Speaker 1: was one of the modern pension princes of Japan. A
• 49:23
Speaker 1: desirable matrimonial article and preternaturally fascinating Chapter eight, The bright
• 49:33
Speaker 1: red spot in Chawt's cheeks. The look at meeting came
• 49:38
Speaker 1: about as planned. There was a distinct air of state
• 49:41
Speaker 1: about Madame Butterfly's house on that day. The baby and
• 49:45
Speaker 1: all the frivolities that attended him were in banishment. The
• 49:49
Speaker 1: apartment had been enlarged by the rearrangement of the shoji
• 49:53
Speaker 1: at the head of it. Statosk in her most brilliant attire,
• 49:56
Speaker 1: said Tooto's son. Japanese women are a pomplished actresses, and
• 50:01
Speaker 1: looking in upon Chorto San just at the moment of
• 50:04
Speaker 1: Yamadori's arrival, one would not have known her. She was
• 50:08
Speaker 1: as unsmiling, as emotionless as the daibutsu. The grave ceremonies
• 50:13
Speaker 1: attending the advent of a candidate for matrimony went forward
• 50:17
Speaker 1: with almost no recognition from Choto San until they had
• 50:20
Speaker 1: come to the point where they might seat themselves before
• 50:23
Speaker 1: her to inspect and be inspected. Then she struck her
• 50:28
Speaker 1: fan against her palm, and Suzuki appeared and set the
• 50:31
Speaker 1: tobacco bond between them. Yamadori suggested somewhat the ready made
• 50:36
Speaker 1: cloth inevitable evidence of his transformation. Otherwise he was the
• 50:41
Speaker 1: average modern Japanese with high gibbeted trousers, high collar, high hat,
• 50:46
Speaker 1: and eye glass. He might not converse directly with Chocho San,
• 50:51
Speaker 1: especially concerning the business at hand, but he was not
• 50:54
Speaker 1: prohibited from conferring with the Nakodo about it in her presence.
• 50:59
Speaker 1: The rule of the quorum for such an occasion simply
• 51:02
Speaker 1: decreed that she should be blind and deaf concerning what
• 51:05
Speaker 1: went on the convenience of the arrangement is obvious. The Nakodo,
• 51:10
Speaker 1: the representative of both parties, was happily permitted, on the
• 51:14
Speaker 1: part of the one to regard what was happening as
• 51:17
Speaker 1: if it had not happened, and on the part of
• 51:20
Speaker 1: the other, as if it had. She is quite as
• 51:24
Speaker 1: beautiful as you said, remarked Yamadori. After a careful inspection
• 51:29
Speaker 1: with his glass, the nakodo nodded virtuously and filled his pipe.
• 51:34
Speaker 1: His client lighted a cigarette. Tucho's son did not even smile.
• 51:40
Speaker 1: And her father, you say, was on the Emperor's side
• 51:43
Speaker 1: in the Satsuma rebellion. The marriage broker satisfied his client
• 51:48
Speaker 1: to the last particular of her father's bloody sacrificial end
• 51:52
Speaker 1: at Yokoji, and you have told her faithfully of me.
• 51:57
Speaker 1: He paused on the last word to note its effect.
• 52:00
Speaker 1: Ponchocho san, there was none, and he hastened to add cumulatively,
• 52:05
Speaker 1: and my august family. He paused again, but again there
• 52:10
Speaker 1: was no sign from the lady of the house. She
• 52:13
Speaker 1: was staring out over his head. And have offered her
• 52:17
Speaker 1: my miserable presents to each of these, the broker answered, lugubriously. Yes,
• 52:23
Speaker 1: then why in the name of gods does she wait?
• 52:28
Speaker 1: The Nakodo explained with a sigh that she had declined
• 52:31
Speaker 1: his presence. I will send her others. They shall be
• 52:35
Speaker 1: a thousand times more valuable. Since I have seen her,
• 52:38
Speaker 1: I know that the first must have been an affront.
• 52:42
Speaker 1: She kept her eyes up, but Yamadori unquestionably smiled in
• 52:46
Speaker 1: the direction of Trochosan, as if she were a woman
• 52:49
Speaker 1: of joy. The light of battle came into the stony
• 52:53
Speaker 1: eyes of the girl. She clapped her hands almost viciously.
• 52:57
Speaker 1: The little maid appeared. Tea, she said. The maid brought
• 53:02
Speaker 1: the tea, and with that splendid light of danger still
• 53:05
Speaker 1: in her eyes, trocho San served it with the air
• 53:08
Speaker 1: of a princess. She put on in an instant all
• 53:11
Speaker 1: the charms of her masmay she gave back. Smile for
• 53:15
Speaker 1: smile now, and jest for jest. She begged Yamadori, with
• 53:19
Speaker 1: the most charming upward inflections to put away his cigarette
• 53:23
Speaker 1: and take her shipowpipe. And he did it. That was Japanese,
• 53:27
Speaker 1: She said, her cigarettes were not, was it not so?
• 53:32
Speaker 1: With a resistless movement toward him, she let him touch
• 53:35
Speaker 1: her hands. In the passage of the cups, she enveloped
• 53:39
Speaker 1: him with the perfume of her garments. She possessed him
• 53:42
Speaker 1: wholly in one dizzy instant. I will give her a
• 53:46
Speaker 1: castle to live in, said Yamadori breathlessly. The nakodo sighed
• 53:52
Speaker 1: trotchro San refilled his pipe with an incomparable grace. Ah,
• 53:58
Speaker 1: she permitted her lips to breathe very softly. She shall
• 54:02
Speaker 1: have a thousand servants. There was no audible response from
• 54:07
Speaker 1: the nakodo, but his eyes gleamed avidly. Georchful. San returned
• 54:11
Speaker 1: the pipe, smiling dazzingly. It seemed almost yes, with her
• 54:16
Speaker 1: everything her heart can wish, cried Yamadori recklessly. The nakodo
• 54:22
Speaker 1: turned beseechingly toward the girl. She lifted her eyebrows. He
• 54:27
Speaker 1: did not understand. As she passed him, she laughed, Is
• 54:32
Speaker 1: it enough? Still? He did not understand. Have we earned
• 54:37
Speaker 1: the present? She whispered, I will give a solemn writing,
• 54:41
Speaker 1: added Yamadori fervidly. She still fancies herself perhaps married to
• 54:47
Speaker 1: the American, sighed the Nakodo. Yamadori laughed disagreeably. If your
• 54:54
Speaker 1: excellency would condescend to explain, Oh, she is not serious.
• 55:00
Speaker 1: A sailor has a sweetheart in every port, you know.
• 55:04
Speaker 1: Chocho San whispered something to the Nakodo. She still smiled.
• 55:09
Speaker 1: But she is perhaps his wife, answered he obediently. Yes,
• 55:15
Speaker 1: said Yamadori, as if they were the same. Choto San
• 55:19
Speaker 1: whispered again. But the child there is a most accomplished child,
• 55:24
Speaker 1: said the Nakodo. Yes, said the traveled Japanese. With the
• 55:29
Speaker 1: same smile and the same intonation, there was a distinct silence.
• 55:34
Speaker 1: Choto San smiled more vividly, but her nostrils moved rapidly
• 55:38
Speaker 1: in and doubt. The Nakodo grew anxious. Yamadori cast his
• 55:43
Speaker 1: eyes towards the ceiling and continued, A sailor does not
• 55:47
Speaker 1: know the difference. In no other country, our children esteemed
• 55:51
Speaker 1: as they are here in America. It is different. People
• 55:55
Speaker 1: sometimes deny them. They are left in a basket at
• 55:59
Speaker 1: some other person door, but the person does not receive them.
• 56:03
Speaker 1: They are then cared for by the municipality as waves.
• 56:07
Speaker 1: It is shameful to be such a child. There are
• 56:09
Speaker 1: great houses and many officers in each city for the
• 56:12
Speaker 1: care of these. They are an odious class. By themselves,
• 56:16
Speaker 1: and can never rise above their first condition. Then Nakodo
• 56:21
Speaker 1: glanced discounce at his client. He had not the slightest
• 56:24
Speaker 1: objection to a man who would lie a little to
• 56:27
Speaker 1: win his cause, but to lie too much was to
• 56:29
Speaker 1: lose it. I myself knew a man whose child became
• 56:33
Speaker 1: a cripple. He sent him to the mayor of the city,
• 56:37
Speaker 1: saying that as the cars of the city had injured him,
• 56:40
Speaker 1: the city must bring him up. He was sent to
• 56:43
Speaker 1: the poor house, and afterward to the stone quarries. It
• 56:47
Speaker 1: was a most piteous sight Toocho's son bent again to
• 56:51
Speaker 1: the ear of the old man. There was a tremor
• 56:53
Speaker 1: in her voice. Now had he eyes of purple? Asked
• 56:58
Speaker 1: the Nakodo. He was beautiful of face, but surely eyes
• 57:03
Speaker 1: of purple are not desirable. Yamadori brought his own down
• 57:07
Speaker 1: from the ceiling and leveled them a Touto son. She
• 57:10
Speaker 1: still smiled, but there was a bright red spot in
• 57:13
Speaker 1: each cheek. Now, but he was misshapen, and he was
• 57:17
Speaker 1: never known to laugh. I saw many such I saw
• 57:21
Speaker 1: a child whose father had deserted it, and the mother,
• 57:25
Speaker 1: Madame Butterfly, clapped her hands again. The maid appeared promptly.
• 57:29
Speaker 1: She had expected the summons. Suzuki good, Suzuki, the excellent gentleman.
• 57:35
Speaker 1: The august, she swept a royal gesture toward them, who
• 57:39
Speaker 1: have done as the honor to call. They wished to
• 57:41
Speaker 1: go hurriedly their shoes, will you not hasten them? With
• 57:46
Speaker 1: a final brilliant smile, she turned her back upon them
• 57:49
Speaker 1: and left the room. Your story of the rejected child,
• 57:53
Speaker 1: did it? Reproached the nakodo on the way. I had
• 57:57
Speaker 1: not got to the worst, said his client ruefully. I
• 58:01
Speaker 1: meant to cite an example exactly to suit her own kiss.
• 58:06
Speaker 1: Luckily she turned us out when she did. Then what
• 58:09
Speaker 1: do you mean, sir, demanded the suitor, in sudden wrath. Oh,
• 58:15
Speaker 1: said the broker in polite haste. I was beginning to
• 58:18
Speaker 1: feel ill. The irony of this escaped the client. Still,
• 58:23
Speaker 1: Goro would have had a less opinion of Yamadori, if,
• 58:26
Speaker 1: having lied once, he had not lied again in defense
• 58:29
Speaker 1: of the first. Though Yamadori came no more. He had
• 58:34
Speaker 1: brought the serpent to Madame Butterfly's Eden, and of section three,
• 58:40
Speaker 1: chapter nine about birds. One day she took her courage
• 58:47
Speaker 1: and the maids too for that matter in both hands
• 58:50
Speaker 1: and called upon the American conseil. She saw the vice consiol.
• 58:55
Speaker 1: There was a west wind and it was warm at Nagazaki.
• 58:58
Speaker 1: He was dozing when he woke. Madame Butterfly was bowing
• 59:03
Speaker 1: before him. At a little distance was the maid with
• 59:06
Speaker 1: the blond baby strapped to her back. He was unable
• 59:10
Speaker 1: to account for them immediately. Good night, said Tacho San,
• 59:15
Speaker 1: smiling amiably. The consol glanced apprehensively about night. Not night,
• 59:23
Speaker 1: is it? They both discovered the error at the same instant.
• 59:27
Speaker 1: Ah no, no, no, that's mistake me. I'm little raddle.
• 59:33
Speaker 1: Excuse us? Does not nice make mistake? We got call
• 59:39
Speaker 1: you good morning? I expect or how do what you think?
• 59:44
Speaker 1: Whichever you like, he answered, without a smile. Then Tchachu
• 59:50
Speaker 1: San waited for something further from the concil. Nothing came.
• 59:55
Speaker 1: She began to suspect that it was her business to
• 59:57
Speaker 1: proceed instead of his. I I think maybe you don't
• 1:00:02
Speaker 1: know me, she questioned, to give him a chance. Oh
• 1:00:07
Speaker 1: yes I do, declared the conseil. In fact, everybody knew
• 1:00:12
Speaker 1: her for one reason and another, her baby, her disowning
• 1:00:16
Speaker 1: her beauty, her American marriage. You are Choto's son. The daughter,
• 1:00:23
Speaker 1: he forgot her father's name, though he had often heard it.
• 1:00:26
Speaker 1: You used to dance, did you not? Aha? See, that's
• 1:00:31
Speaker 1: what I think. You don't know me which ever, I
• 1:00:35
Speaker 1: Nobody's daughter. Just missus Benja no missus frang Gailin Benjamin No, no,
• 1:00:43
Speaker 1: no Missus Benjamin Frang Gailen Picaton everybody else outcast me
• 1:00:51
  Speaker 1: A ha ha i e I little more rattle. Oh.
• 1:00:57
Speaker 1: The Consil was genuinely surprised, and for the first time
• 1:01:01
Speaker 1: looked with interest at the child. Toutoussan to aid him
• 1:01:05
Speaker 1: took trouble from the maid. Finally, he politely asked her
• 1:01:09
Speaker 1: what he could do for her. I got ask you
• 1:01:12
Speaker 1: a thing. She returned the baby to the maid, proceed
• 1:01:17
Speaker 1: said the Conseil. You know about birds in your country? Yes? Something? Ah,
• 1:01:26
Speaker 1: that's what I think. You know averything. That's why your
• 1:01:30
Speaker 1: country send you here a count you bear wies. You
• 1:01:35
Speaker 1: do me too much honor, laughed the Conseil. You don't know.
• 1:01:41
Speaker 1: She was distinctly alarmed. Everything. No, only a few things,
• 1:01:47
Speaker 1: But you know about birds, robins, just little robins. Her
• 1:01:53
Speaker 1: inflections denounced a crime not to know. He was not
• 1:01:57
Speaker 1: proof against this or against these? Oh, yes, he said,
• 1:02:01
Speaker 1: of course, Aha, of course that's what I all times singing.
• 1:02:08
Speaker 1: That's mistake by you. They could laugh together now. Ah,
• 1:02:13
Speaker 1: tell me then, if you please. When do those robin
• 1:02:17
Speaker 1: nest again? Me? I think it is later than in Japan?
• 1:02:22
Speaker 1: Is it not a count? Just the count? The robin
• 1:02:25
Speaker 1: nesting again? Just now in Japan? The consul said, yes,
• 1:02:31
Speaker 1: because the girl so evidently desired it, not because he knew. Ah,
• 1:02:37
Speaker 1: that's what I think. Later, mulge, later than in Japan?
• 1:02:42
Speaker 1: Is it not again? Her fervid emphasize obliged him to
• 1:02:47
Speaker 1: say yes, somewhat against his conscience, and say, when somebody
• 1:02:54
Speaker 1: getting mary with another body at your America, don't he
• 1:02:57
Speaker 1: god stay merry usually yes, decidedly, yes, even sometimes when
• 1:03:04
Speaker 1: he doesn't wish to, and don't matter where they live,
• 1:03:08
Speaker 1: not at all. Ah, how that is nice? Say you
• 1:03:15
Speaker 1: know all about that? What do you think? Well? I
• 1:03:20
Speaker 1: know more about that than about ornithology. You see, I've
• 1:03:24
Speaker 1: been married, but I've never been a robin. The joke
• 1:03:28
Speaker 1: passed quite unnoticed. She put her great question, and no
• 1:03:34
Speaker 1: one can get divorced from another except in a large
• 1:03:38
Speaker 1: courthouse full judge. Yes, laughed the consil. That is true,
• 1:03:44
Speaker 1: and that take a very long time, Yes, nearly always.
• 1:03:50
Speaker 1: The laws delay, and sometimes they get inside of jail.
• 1:03:55
Speaker 1: She was so avid that she risked the very great
• 1:03:58
Speaker 1: discourtesy of an interruption, and that too without a word
• 1:04:02
Speaker 1: of apology. Susuki was for an instant ashamed for her.
• 1:04:07
Speaker 1: Occasionally that happens too. I believe every doubt had been
• 1:04:11
Speaker 1: resolved in her favor. And if they got a nice
• 1:04:15
Speaker 1: baby yate, don't they? Ah? Don't everybody like that? I
• 1:04:22
Speaker 1: did very much. Mine is a fine boy. Say he
• 1:04:28
Speaker 1: looked like you, purple eye, bald hairspink cheek. I'm afraid
• 1:04:33
Speaker 1: he does fraid glad ben Oh fraid mean glad. Yes,
• 1:04:43
  Speaker 1: that's why mister b f piccaton talking. Don't mean what
• 1:04:47
Speaker 1: he say, and don't say what he mean a zach.
• 1:04:51
Speaker 1: The concil laughed, but he could not quite understand the
• 1:04:54
Speaker 1: drift of her questioning, if people have a nice baby
• 1:04:58
Speaker 1: alike that they don't give him away? Not to no
• 1:05:01
Speaker 1: be no be, they don't like what you think I
• 1:05:07
Speaker 1: should think. Not for a moment he looked savage as
• 1:05:11
Speaker 1: a young father can Chochousan's face glowed. She stood consciously
• 1:05:16
Speaker 1: aside that the consul might the better see the baby
• 1:05:19
Speaker 1: on Suzuki's back. He understood and smiled in the good
• 1:05:23
Speaker 1: fellowship of new parenthood. He made some play with the
• 1:05:26
Speaker 1: child and called him a fine fellow. Ah, you never
• 1:05:31
Speaker 1: see no such baby, I expect in the largesse of
• 1:05:36
Speaker 1: his fellowship, he declared that he had not. He had
• 1:05:39
Speaker 1: only recently been engaged in putting the same question to
• 1:05:42
Speaker 1: his friends. She had hoped, indeed, that he would go
• 1:05:45
Speaker 1: on from that and say more the subject so abundantly
• 1:05:49
Speaker 1: merited it. But she now remembered that, in her haste
• 1:05:53
Speaker 1: to satisfy her doubts, she had neglected all those innumerable
• 1:05:57
Speaker 1: little inquiries which go to make up the graceful game
• 1:06:00
Speaker 1: of Japanese courtesy. Though she might neglect them with Pinkerton,
• 1:06:04
Speaker 1: she must not with a stranger who was obliging her.
• 1:06:10
Speaker 1: Chapter ten, gentle lying, Ah, how is that health? Also?
• 1:06:17
Speaker 1: I am sorry I woke you up, excellent, and that
• 1:06:21
Speaker 1: I interrupt your languages. That is not happy for the
• 1:06:25
Speaker 1: most exalted health to be wake up and interrupt. Therefore,
• 1:06:30
Speaker 1: I pray your honorable pardon, And how is that health?
• 1:06:36
Speaker 1: The consul said that he was quite well, ah, how
• 1:06:40
Speaker 1: that is nice, and you always sleeping well, most honorable?
• 1:06:45
Speaker 1: He nodded, yes, I hear you sleep. Oh that's not joke. No, no, no,
• 1:06:53
Speaker 1: he had laughed. But she would never do that. But
• 1:06:56
Speaker 1: I do snore, I believe sometimes times. He was not
• 1:07:02
Speaker 1: proud of even this. Of course, oh just like gentle breezes.
• 1:07:09
Speaker 1: He said that he could not do better than adopt
• 1:07:11
Speaker 1: this charming euphemism. Also, how old you getting there? Soon? Thirty?
• 1:07:20
Speaker 1: A Japanese always adds a few years. She therefore thought
• 1:07:23
Speaker 1: him younger, and her veneration obeated accordingly. But he was
• 1:07:27
Speaker 1: in fact older. That's also nice, very nice. I wish
• 1:07:33
Speaker 1: I saw old that mister B. F. Pickett, and he
• 1:07:36
Speaker 1: liked me more if older, I think, she sighed. I
• 1:07:41
Speaker 1: don't know about that. The American point of view differs,
• 1:07:45
Speaker 1: but he would not meddle. How old are you pray?
• 1:07:50
Speaker 1: This was only the proper return for her courtesy. Besides,
• 1:07:54
Speaker 1: the consul was enjoying the usually dull game of the
• 1:07:57
Speaker 1: korum to day, the girl was pecum in a most
• 1:08:00
Speaker 1: dazzling fashion. Me I bowt bout what he had said
• 1:08:07
Speaker 1: made her doubt a little. The Japanese idea bout most
• 1:08:11
Speaker 1: twenty seven. When the chresanthemum blooms again, she was seventeen, Yes,
• 1:08:18
Speaker 1: bout most twenty seven, with a barely perceptible rising inflection.
• 1:08:23
Speaker 1: He acquiet in the fiction, but smiled at the way
• 1:08:26
Speaker 1: she hung her head and blushed. This was not the
• 1:08:29
Speaker 1: Japanese way of telling one's age or any other gentle ee,
• 1:08:34
Speaker 1: you got a grandmother, she proceeded, two, alleged the conseil,
• 1:08:40
Speaker 1: that's verres splendid, and she is well in her house too?
• 1:08:45
Speaker 1: Which one she passed a joke if she saw it.
• 1:08:49
Speaker 1: No Japanese will make his parent the subject of one.
• 1:08:53
Speaker 1: The old one, always the old one first, The conseil
• 1:08:58
Speaker 1: felt queerly chidden she was well at last, accounts that's nice,
• 1:09:04
Speaker 1: and the young one the same. And now about yours, alas,
• 1:09:12
Speaker 1: I have not the same happiness like you. I got
• 1:09:15
Speaker 1: no ancestors. Whichever they all angry. Accounts that mister b
• 1:09:19
Speaker 1: f Picqaton so they outcast me out the family. He
• 1:09:24
Speaker 1: don't like that they live with him. Account they bag numbers.
• 1:09:28
Speaker 1: He an me gone be only bag number, he said,
• 1:09:31
Speaker 1: He big boss back number me just little boss bag
• 1:09:34
Speaker 1: number me. I don't got ancestors before me, no behind
• 1:09:39
Speaker 1: me now, hence they don't show me the way Tomato.
• 1:09:43
  Speaker 1: When I die, well, me, I don't care whichever I
• 1:09:48
Speaker 1: got husband and Babby. There's most best nice in Japan,
• 1:09:52
Speaker 1: maybe in the whole world, and I can go at
• 1:09:55
Speaker 1: Nirvana by another road. Uh huh if I most the
• 1:10:00
Speaker 1: kindly console better than she understood both the effect of
• 1:10:03
Speaker 1: the separation of her from her ancestors and the temperament
• 1:10:07
Speaker 1: of Pinkerton. He undertook, notwithstanding his resolution not to meddle,
• 1:10:12
Speaker 1: a tentative remonstrance. She listened politely, but he made no impression.
• 1:10:18
Speaker 1: You must not break with your relatives. If Pinkerton should
• 1:10:21
Speaker 1: not should well die, you know you would indeed be
• 1:10:26
Speaker 1: an outcast. If your own people would have nothing to
• 1:10:30
Speaker 1: do with you, nobody else would. It must, of course
• 1:10:34
Speaker 1: be known to you that your marriage with Pinkerton has
• 1:10:37
Speaker 1: put you in unfortunate relations with everybody, the Japanese because
• 1:10:41
Speaker 1: you have offended them, the foreigners because he has. What
• 1:10:45
Speaker 1: would you do in such a case? Me, I could
• 1:10:50
Speaker 1: thence maybe or or die. But she laughed as she
• 1:10:55
Speaker 1: said it. Then she acknowledged his rebuking glance. Excuse me,
• 1:11:01
Speaker 1: that's not nice. Well, it is not so easy to
• 1:11:05
Speaker 1: die as it was before he came, she sighed happily.
• 1:11:10
Speaker 1: The consul was curious why. He asked, why he make
• 1:11:16
Speaker 1: my life more sweet? But that is no reason for
• 1:11:20
Speaker 1: quarreling with your family. But they don't want me because
• 1:11:25
Speaker 1: my husband don't want them. Henceforth, I got go away
• 1:11:29
Speaker 1: from my husband if I want them, and if I
• 1:11:32
Speaker 1: want him more better, I got go away from them.
• 1:11:36
Speaker 1: No matter which ever, I got go away from someone. Well,
• 1:11:41
Speaker 1: I want those husbands more better than any say, there's
• 1:11:46
Speaker 1: a phony. They make me merry with him when I
• 1:11:49
Speaker 1: don't wish him. Now I am merry with him. They
• 1:11:52
Speaker 1: don't wish him. Just after my father he killed hisself
• 1:11:57
Speaker 1: sticking with short swords. That's how we're getting so poor.
• 1:12:01
Speaker 1: Oh very poor me. I go and dance little so
• 1:12:06
Speaker 1: we don't starve. Also, I think if somebody wish me,
• 1:12:09
Speaker 1: I get married for a while. A count that grandmother
• 1:12:12
Speaker 1: got have food and clothings. Well those were grandmother. She
• 1:12:17
Speaker 1: asked the old Nakoto about it. She liked me get
• 1:12:20
Speaker 1: merry with someone. He say, man's just ask him other day,
• 1:12:25
Speaker 1: can he get him nice wife? And he don't know
• 1:12:28
Speaker 1: none nicer. She paused to let the council make sure
• 1:12:33
Speaker 1: of this fact, which he did, and then acknowledged the
• 1:12:36
Speaker 1: appreciation she had provoked with a charming smile. Whichever he say,
• 1:12:42
Speaker 1: he think I don't like him, a County America jin.
• 1:12:46
Speaker 1: He also remarking with me that he a barbarian and
• 1:12:49
  Speaker 1: a beees. Well me, I say I don't want him.
• 1:12:54
Speaker 1: I frayed bees. But everyone else they say yea yea ah.
• 1:13:00
Speaker 1: Yes he got moany, and for just a little while
• 1:13:03
Speaker 1: I got in during him. So I say, bring me
• 1:13:07
Speaker 1: that beast, and lo, one day the old Nakodo he
• 1:13:11
Speaker 1: bringing him for look at meeting. Well, she paused to laugh,
• 1:13:17
Speaker 1: And so infectious was it that the council adventuriously joined her.
• 1:13:22
Speaker 1: At first, I think him a god. He's so tall
• 1:13:26
Speaker 1: and beautiful, and got on such a blue clothes, all
• 1:13:30
Speaker 1: full golden things. And he don't sit way way off
• 1:13:34
Speaker 1: and just talk, she laughed abundantly. He made my life
• 1:13:40
Speaker 1: so very joyous. I think I never been that happy.
• 1:13:45
Speaker 1: She had an excess of demareness. Oh, just at first
• 1:13:49
Speaker 1: I frightened. A count he sits so close with me
• 1:13:53
Speaker 1: and hold my hand, and as if it made satin.
• 1:13:57
Speaker 1: Uh huh, satin. Look. She gave them both to him.
• 1:14:04
Speaker 1: They were deliciously pretty, but the Consil was embarrassed by
• 1:14:07
Speaker 1: his possession of them. She began slowly to withdraw them,
• 1:14:11
Speaker 1: and then he let them go with regret. I beg
• 1:14:14
Speaker 1: your august pardon. I just singing in the inside me
• 1:14:18
Speaker 1: and speaking with the outside. That's not nice. You don't
• 1:14:22
Speaker 1: care nothing about that? Those what he thought, she meant
• 1:14:28
Speaker 1: the hands, and perhaps she did just those little story. Yes,
• 1:14:35
Speaker 1: I do, declared the consol with some relief. It is
• 1:14:39
Speaker 1: a charming story, and it was for to Chusan's eyes
• 1:14:44
Speaker 1: and hands took part in its telling, as well as
• 1:14:46
Speaker 1: her lips. You mean you like here more? Yes, she
• 1:14:52
Speaker 1: reflected an instant. I think there is no more, just yes,
• 1:14:58
Speaker 1: just after a while. I never give it frightened, no more,
• 1:15:01
Speaker 1: no matter how close nor how he hold my hand.
• 1:15:05
Speaker 1: But then you, I beg pardon. You were married? I
• 1:15:09
Speaker 1: think you said so? Oh yea, she replied, as if
• 1:15:13
Speaker 1: that had made little difference in their situation. I marry
• 1:15:17
Speaker 1: with him. I think his ship was then ordered to
• 1:15:20
Speaker 1: have she nodded, alas he got go and serve his country.
• 1:15:26
Speaker 1: But he gone come back and keep on being merry
• 1:15:29
Speaker 1: with me? What you think the consul contrived to evade
• 1:15:34
Speaker 1: the interrogation? Is that why I asked about the robins. Yes,
• 1:15:40
Speaker 1: he gon't come when the robins nest again, he he
• 1:15:45
Speaker 1: don't never expect we got this nice baby a count.
• 1:15:48
  Speaker 1: I don't tell him. I don't can tell him. I
• 1:15:51
Speaker 1: don't know where he is. But me, I don't tell
• 1:15:56
Speaker 1: if I know a count. He rushed right over here
• 1:15:58
Speaker 1: and deserted his country, and henceforth getting a large trouble
• 1:16:03
Speaker 1: maybe with that president United States America and that large
• 1:16:07
Speaker 1: goddess liberty independence. What you think Chapter eleven, The most
• 1:16:15
Speaker 1: beast nice man. It was quite superfluous to point out
• 1:16:20
Speaker 1: such of her ideas as had birth in the fertile
• 1:16:23
Speaker 1: brain of Pinkerton. Certainly he had enjoyed his married life
• 1:16:27
Speaker 1: with her, but it was for another reason than hers,
• 1:16:30
Speaker 1: the consul could observe. He thought, how exquisitely amusing it
• 1:16:34
Speaker 1: had been. It was too exactly in Pinkerton's line to
• 1:16:38
Speaker 1: take this dainty, vivid, eager, formless material and molded to
• 1:16:43
Speaker 1: his most wantonly whimsical wish. It was perhaps fortunate for
• 1:16:47
Speaker 1: her that his country had had need of him. So
• 1:16:49
Speaker 1: soon after his marriage, however, the consul informed her that
• 1:16:54
Speaker 1: her fears of trouble for Pinkerton from the sources mentioned
• 1:16:57
Speaker 1: were entirely groundless. But this, to his surprise, was not
• 1:17:02
Speaker 1: pleasing intelligence. She liked to believe, as he had let
• 1:17:06
Speaker 1: her believe, that Pinkerton occupied a large space in the
• 1:17:10
Speaker 1: affairs of his country. That he was under the special
• 1:17:13
Speaker 1: patronage of the President and the Goddess of Liberty was
• 1:17:16
Speaker 1: perhaps her own corollary, but it fitted his character as
• 1:17:20
Speaker 1: she had conceived it. To her, he was a god, perhaps,
• 1:17:25
Speaker 1: but let it be understood that the Japanese god is
• 1:17:28
Speaker 1: neither austere nor immaculate. Well, whichever, she said, in some disappointment,
• 1:17:36
Speaker 1: there's a surprise on him when he come. He all
• 1:17:39
Speaker 1: times joking with me. I make one joke upon him.
• 1:17:43
Speaker 1: There's good joke. What do you think? The Conseil shook
• 1:17:47
Speaker 1: his head. The matter began to have a sinister look.
• 1:17:51
Speaker 1: But the girl's faith was sublime. Ah ha, you. Her
• 1:17:56
Speaker 1: inflection was one of pity for his ignorance. That's a count.
• 1:18:01
Speaker 1: You don't know him. You're shaking your nice head. He
• 1:18:04
Speaker 1: joking all times. Sometime I don't know if he joking,
• 1:18:09
Speaker 1: except he stop, looks solemn and laugh. Then he make
• 1:18:14
Speaker 1: the house reddle. Oh, maybe you think I don't joke too. Also,
• 1:18:19
Speaker 1: well there's mistake. I make joke just like him. Jest bad.
• 1:18:25
Speaker 1: One time I make joke with him. Bout runway to
• 1:18:28
Speaker 1: that grandmother a count. I don't care for him no more.
• 1:18:32
Speaker 1: Well what you think he say, Hello, let's see how
• 1:18:37
Speaker 1: you can run fast? Ha huh ha, there's little joke
• 1:18:42
Speaker 1: upon me. Now I can't have the largest joke upon him.
• 1:18:47
Speaker 1: Say you got tell him, if you please, Augustness, that
• 1:18:52
Speaker 1: I couldn't wait. It was so long, long long, I
• 1:18:57
Speaker 1: got tired. So I am merry with a great and
• 1:19:01
Speaker 1: wise prince name Yamadori Okio, and live in a huge
• 1:19:06
Speaker 1: castle with one thousand servants and and all my heart
• 1:19:10
Speaker 1: skin wish uh huh. Also that I gone way to
• 1:19:15
Speaker 1: his castle with his purple eyed babby to never return
• 1:19:19
Speaker 1: no more. Neiver, you can't tell him that I would
• 1:19:24
Speaker 1: prefer not to have a hand in any further That
• 1:19:27
Speaker 1: is any deception, the concil objected gravely. The girl was
• 1:19:32
Speaker 1: amazed and reproachful. Ah don't you like joke? I think
• 1:19:39
Speaker 1: avery American. Do that's not nice for me? I got
• 1:19:43
Speaker 1: be sorry I telling you all those alas, how that
• 1:19:48
Speaker 1: would be nice for you. You see him get angry
• 1:19:52
Speaker 1: so quick She smoothed her hands together. And then he
• 1:19:57
Speaker 1: say those remark about debil and hell and rush up
• 1:20:00
Speaker 1: the hill this way. She again lifted her kimono and
• 1:20:04
Speaker 1: acted recklessly across the apartment. But my dear madam, she
• 1:20:10
Speaker 1: came at him with a voice and movements that were
• 1:20:12
Speaker 1: resistlessly caressing. He perceived how useless it would be to
• 1:20:17
Speaker 1: protest further. He acknowledged her protean fascination. Ah, please august
• 1:20:23
Speaker 1: nest to tell him it will be that nice for me. Ah,
• 1:20:28
Speaker 1: you gon't do it, yes, say so. The consil had
• 1:20:33
Speaker 1: capitulated to her voice and eyes. This was evident to her. Ah,
• 1:20:38
Speaker 1: thanks most excellent, You're the most best nice man in
• 1:20:43
Speaker 1: the world, she paused guiltily. Even this purely Japanese euphemism
• 1:20:49
Speaker 1: might be conjugal treason. Except laughed the conseil. Except confessed
• 1:20:56
Speaker 1: the girl with drooping head. A smile began to grow
• 1:21:00
Speaker 1: upon her lips. When she raised her face. It was
• 1:21:03
Speaker 1: a splendid laugh. How we have fun seeing him rush
• 1:21:07
Speaker 1: up that hill at the house, she was frankly dissembling.
• 1:21:11
Speaker 1: So she illustrated again, back and forth across the apartment.
• 1:21:17
Speaker 1: After that, Ah, after that, Well, I make everything correct.
• 1:21:24
Speaker 1: She was radiantly certain that she could. The concil remembered
• 1:21:29
Speaker 1: the saying of the Professor of Rhetoric that no comedy
• 1:21:32
Speaker 1: could succeed without its element of tragedy. Well, Pinkton might
• 1:21:37
Speaker 1: have meant to return to her. Any other man probably would.
• 1:21:42
Speaker 1: He would not have been quite certain of himself, only
• 1:21:46
Speaker 1: that stuff about the robins souted like one of his
• 1:21:49
Speaker 1: infernal jokes. He probably supposed that she knew what he
• 1:21:53
Speaker 1: meant farewell, but she had not so construed it. Unless
• 1:21:57
Speaker 1: Pinkerton had changed, he had probably not thought of her again,
• 1:22:02
Speaker 1: except as the prompt wife of another man. He never
• 1:22:06
Speaker 1: explained anything. It was his theory that circumstances always did
• 1:22:10
Speaker 1: this for one, and it was therefore a saving of
• 1:22:13
Speaker 1: energy to permit circumstances to do it. There was a
• 1:22:17
Speaker 1: saying in the navy that if any one could forget
• 1:22:19
Speaker 1: to played game or a spent bottle more quickly than Pinkerton,
• 1:22:23
Speaker 1: he had not yet been born. Providing her with a
• 1:22:27
Speaker 1: house and money meant nothing, He would probably have given
• 1:22:30
Speaker 1: her all he had, whether it were a dollar or
• 1:22:33
Speaker 1: a thousand. But on the other hand, if she had
• 1:22:36
Speaker 1: been one of the sudden and insane fancies which occasionally
• 1:22:40
Speaker 1: visited him, the case was altogether different, and altogether like Pinkerton.
• 1:22:45
Speaker 1: For in the person of a fascinating woman, the emotion
• 1:22:48
Speaker 1: might survive the absence in question. For himself, he was
• 1:22:52
Speaker 1: quite sure, had he been Pinkerton, of course, that it
• 1:22:56
Speaker 1: would have survived something greater. And finally, his own view
• 1:23:00
Speaker 1: prevailed with him as if they were Pinkiton's, and he
• 1:23:03
Speaker 1: believed that he would be delighted to return and resume
• 1:23:06
Speaker 1: his charming life with her on Higashi Hill. He thereupon
• 1:23:10
Speaker 1: told her that Lieutenant Pinkerton's ship was under orders to
• 1:23:13
Speaker 1: stop at Nagazaki the government rendzvous for the Navy about
• 1:23:17
Speaker 1: the first of September to observe and report the probabilities
• 1:23:21
Speaker 1: of war with China, and he was instantly glad that
• 1:23:24
Speaker 1: he had told her. The girl's superb joy was expressed
• 1:23:28
Speaker 1: in a long, indrawn sigh and then silence. But something
• 1:23:33
Speaker 1: had to be said or done. I I like as
• 1:23:38
Speaker 1: you another thing, again, dissembling as if the talk were
• 1:23:41
Speaker 1: still at the trivialities where it began, certainly, said the
• 1:23:46
Speaker 1: Consil with a smile. But won't you have a chair?
• 1:23:51
Speaker 1: He had noticed that she was trembling. She sat up
• 1:23:54
Speaker 1: unsteadily on the edge of it, and then she forgot
• 1:23:57
Speaker 1: what she had meant to ask. Say she was still
• 1:24:02
Speaker 1: at sea, But suddenly a thought flashed in her eyes.
• 1:24:07
Speaker 1: All babbies that you're America got those purple eye h yes,
• 1:24:12
Speaker 1: very many of them, said the Conseil, with a little
• 1:24:15
Speaker 1: surprise at her direction, and and also bald of their heads,
• 1:24:22
Speaker 1: all of them, I believe. At first, he smiled, and
• 1:24:26
Speaker 1: the girl smiled back at him engagingly, say, augustness, he
• 1:24:32
Speaker 1: can't come for see those baby what you think? Her
• 1:24:37
Speaker 1: words were like caresses, But the rapture growing surely in
• 1:24:41
Speaker 1: the girl's face now was not reflected in that of
• 1:24:44
Speaker 1: the conseil. Concern for her outweighed her fascinations for the moment,
• 1:24:50
Speaker 1: I I hope, so she cut off his doubting incontinently,
• 1:24:56
Speaker 1: say maybe you also don't think gon't take us live
• 1:25:01
Speaker 1: in his large castle at United States America, She challenged, reproachfully,
• 1:25:07
Speaker 1: did he tell you that he would? That he had one. No,
• 1:25:12
Speaker 1: he don't tell me na thing, he laughed when I
• 1:25:16
Speaker 1: ask him, like the house gone fall down? But what
• 1:25:20
Speaker 1: you think? The consul answered her quite briefly. He knew
• 1:25:26
Speaker 1: that he hurt her, but his impotent anger was at Pinkerton.
• 1:25:30
Speaker 1: He had not thought him capable of that. If I
• 1:25:33
Speaker 1: were to advise, I should ask you to consider seriously
• 1:25:37
Speaker 1: Yamadori's proposal. If he has really offered himself, it is
• 1:25:41
Speaker 1: a great and unusual opportunity for you, for any girl
• 1:25:45
Speaker 1: in in Japan. You think those you? She looked at
• 1:25:52
Speaker 1: him for an amazed and reproachful instant, then gathered her
• 1:25:55
Speaker 1: kimono in her hand and pushed her feet into her clocks.
• 1:26:00
Speaker 1: Go before Suzuki, she said gently to the maid to
• 1:26:04
Speaker 1: the conseil, sorrowfully good night. At the door, she turned,
• 1:26:09
Speaker 1: with the ceremonial sweep of her draperies, looked and came
• 1:26:13
Speaker 1: hurrying back. All the joy had returned to her face
• 1:26:17
Speaker 1: at the sincere regret almost pain she saw upon his.
• 1:26:21
Speaker 1: She impulsively grasped his hands, both of them once more different.
• 1:26:28
Speaker 1: Good night, augustness, and her voice was very soft. Aha
• 1:26:34
Speaker 1: ha ha, me I just a fool, yeaes you you
• 1:26:40
Speaker 1: the most best nice man in all the whole world.
• 1:26:45
Speaker 1: She paused, smiling up at him. He understood that she
• 1:26:49
Speaker 1: wished to repeat their pretty play upon the phrase excerpt.
• 1:26:54
Speaker 1: She nodded and laughed, except she hurried after the maid,
• 1:27:02
Speaker 1: laughing back at him confessingly as she went. And after
• 1:27:07
Speaker 1: all the consil was glad it had ended thus, for
• 1:27:10
Speaker 1: joy is better than sorrow, always and everywhere. When they
• 1:27:15
Speaker 1: again reached the pretty house on the hill, chochou San
• 1:27:18
Speaker 1: looked ruefully back over the steep road they had come. Oh,
• 1:27:22
Speaker 1: how that was tiresome, Suzuki. But he when he comes,
• 1:27:26
Speaker 1: it will be just one, two, three great strides. How
• 1:27:32
Speaker 1: he will rush up that hill it cost us so
• 1:27:34
Speaker 1: much sweat to climb, like storm with lightning and thunder
• 1:27:39
Speaker 1: flash flash, flash boom, boom boom, And here he is
• 1:27:45
Speaker 1: all for just little me. Then how he will stamp about,
• 1:27:50
Speaker 1: not removing his boots, spoiling the mats, smashing the fusuma,
• 1:27:55
Speaker 1: shaking the house like earthquake. Animal. Where is she? Huh?
• 1:28:00
Speaker 1: Mans told me she gone and merry with a fool
• 1:28:03
Speaker 1: YAMADORI gone me my purp ie baby away. Then I
• 1:28:08
Speaker 1: jump round his neck before he getting too angry, and
• 1:28:12
Speaker 1: hold his hand and say close with his ears, how
• 1:28:16
Speaker 1: do mister b F Pikaton? Huh, what do you think Suzuki?
• 1:28:23
Speaker 1: And Suzuki said in English too, that's most best nice
• 1:28:27
Speaker 1: thing I ave. I see end of section four, chapter twelve,
• 1:28:36
Speaker 1: like a picture of Punchosai. From that time until the
• 1:28:42
Speaker 1: seventeenth of September, not a ship entered the harbor, but
• 1:28:45
Speaker 1: under the scrutiny of the glass that Lieutenant Pinkerton had
• 1:28:49
Speaker 1: left at the little house on Higashi Hill to read
• 1:28:52
Speaker 1: his signals aboard, and there were very many of them,
• 1:28:56
Speaker 1: for the war was imminent. Faith had begun to strain
• 1:29:00
Speaker 1: with unfaith. After the first it was very long. But
• 1:29:04
Speaker 1: on the seventeenth his ship came into the bay. So
• 1:29:07
Speaker 1: great like a bird did she come, that the glass
• 1:29:10
Speaker 1: did not find her until her white and gold mass
• 1:29:13
Speaker 1: veered to make an anchorage. Then all at once the
• 1:29:17
Speaker 1: gilt name on her bow was before Cho Troussan's eyes.
• 1:29:21
Speaker 1: It was tragically sudden, with a hurtling cry, she fell
• 1:29:25
Speaker 1: to the floor. The little maid with Eastern intuition understood,
• 1:29:30
Speaker 1: but she said nothing and did what was best. Both
• 1:29:34
Speaker 1: she and her mistress and all the world for that matter,
• 1:29:38
Speaker 1: lew the comfort of this speechless, sympathetic service, and presently
• 1:29:43
Speaker 1: she was better and could talk. I I didn't know
• 1:29:48
Speaker 1: I saw glad softly laughed Trochusan, But the maid had
• 1:29:54
Speaker 1: known what to expect. You gone dress little now, please,
• 1:29:58
Speaker 1: oh Cussan, you can't sleep, little please, just little rest sleep.
• 1:30:06
Speaker 1: She drew her mistress's eyelids down and lightly held them.
• 1:30:10
Speaker 1: Chochou San shook her off and sprang up, revivified. Rest
• 1:30:15
Speaker 1: sleep not till he come. Rest, Peace, sleep, beauty, chanted
• 1:30:24
Speaker 1: the maid persuasively, but her mistress would not. Now hassen
• 1:30:30
Speaker 1: like you got eagle's wings and a thousand feet. It
• 1:30:34
Speaker 1: will not be one hour, not one half till he
• 1:30:37
Speaker 1: will be here. My pink kimono, whidest obi kansachi for
• 1:30:43
Speaker 1: my hair, and and poppies. I will be more beautiful
• 1:30:47
Speaker 1: than I have ever been. Flowers alas there are no
• 1:30:52
Speaker 1: cherry blossoms. How that is sad, seem like we cannot
• 1:30:56
Speaker 1: be gay without them. In the month of the cherry,
• 1:31:00
Speaker 1: we were merry, but chrysanthemums, all of them, and lanterns.
• 1:31:05
Speaker 1: If it be black night, mowst one thousand. Hah huh,
• 1:31:11
Speaker 1: his house shall be gayer than it has ever been.
• 1:31:14
Speaker 1: There shall neighver again be such good occasion? Rece is beauty,
• 1:31:20
Speaker 1: urged the maid, holding up the mirror to her. Ah
• 1:31:23
Speaker 1: t Suzuki, I am beautiful, as beautiful as when he
• 1:31:28
Speaker 1: went away. The maid was silent, the Japanese silence, which
• 1:31:32
Speaker 1: is not a scent. Chocho San snatched a metallic mirror
• 1:31:37
Speaker 1: out of her hand. I am, she cried savagely. Say so.
• 1:31:43
Speaker 1: She brandished a heavy mirror over the girl's head. I
• 1:31:47
Speaker 1: ask you to rece peace. Sleep that way, get beautiful
• 1:31:52
Speaker 1: once more? Oh, once more. The mirror crashed to the floor,
• 1:31:59
Speaker 1: and she to tears. Just you've been too trouble, Now
• 1:32:04
Speaker 1: you've gone rest little, urged the comforting maid. Oh all
• 1:32:10
Speaker 1: the gods, I cannot. I cannot till he come. I
• 1:32:14
Speaker 1: shall die before. She sorrowfully recovered the mirror. No, no, pitiful, kwanon,
• 1:32:22
Speaker 1: I am no longer beautiful. Waiting and doubting make one
• 1:32:26
Speaker 1: soon sad and old. And how long we have waited?
• 1:32:30
Speaker 1: How long? Oh shaka? But now I am happy, happier
• 1:32:35
Speaker 1: than I have ever been. Therefore shall I be more beautiful?
• 1:32:39
Speaker 1: Than I have ever been again, For happiness also is beauty. Ah, Susuki,
• 1:32:45
Speaker 1: be kind with me. She got on her knees to
• 1:32:49
Speaker 1: the maid and laid her head at her feet. An
• 1:32:52
Speaker 1: ecstatic thought came to her, Susuki, you shall make me
• 1:32:56
Speaker 1: beautiful to day and tomorrow the gods shall now we
• 1:33:00
Speaker 1: have not even time to pray them, not time to rest,
• 1:33:04
Speaker 1: will you not? Can you not? Ah? You most? She
• 1:33:10
Speaker 1: pulled the girl down to her and whispered the last
• 1:33:13
Speaker 1: words in her ear, with her arms about her, and
• 1:33:17
Speaker 1: the girl did let us not inquire how she had
• 1:33:21
Speaker 1: never yet withstood that tone and that caress. There was
• 1:33:24
Speaker 1: a certain magic in her deft fingers, and her mistress
• 1:33:28
Speaker 1: had it all. No daintier creature need one ever wish
• 1:33:31
Speaker 1: to see than this bride awaiting anew the coming of
• 1:33:34
Speaker 1: her husband. And when it was all done, they each
• 1:33:38
Speaker 1: took a final delighted look into the mirror. It was
• 1:33:42
Speaker 1: too small to show the whole figure, but they moved
• 1:33:44
Speaker 1: it up and down and round about until every portion
• 1:33:47
Speaker 1: had been seen. They both pronounced it very good. Stand
• 1:33:52
Speaker 1: just that way, begged the maid, going the length of
• 1:33:55
Speaker 1: the apartment, to observe, just like those no porcelains of
• 1:34:00
Speaker 1: king Ko San, she declared, just like those old picture
• 1:34:05
Speaker 1: of Punchosai retorted Toto san, meaning anything but that, but
• 1:34:11
Speaker 1: in the way of women in the world over. A
• 1:34:13
Speaker 1: few more touches were necessary and it was finished. Now
• 1:34:18
Speaker 1: the flowers for his room. Take them all. Oh everyone,
• 1:34:22
Speaker 1: we shall not need them again. Go go go uh huh,
• 1:34:28
Speaker 1: and trouble make a picture of him. He will be
• 1:34:32
Speaker 1: troubled no longer after today. He can't get new name.
• 1:34:36
Speaker 1: Maybe Joy Joy. Her commands were obeyed. Within the appointed hour.
• 1:34:42
Speaker 1: The house was decked as for a festival, and not
• 1:34:45
Speaker 1: a flower remained upon its stem. The baby had indeed
• 1:34:49
Speaker 1: become a picture, and saw had Tooto Son and the
• 1:34:52
Speaker 1: maid and the house. Then they hid behind the shoji,
• 1:34:56
Speaker 1: recklessly making peep holes with their dampened fingers. As they
• 1:35:00
Speaker 1: had planned. There was one very low down for the
• 1:35:03
Speaker 1: baby so that he could sit on the mats, which
• 1:35:06
Speaker 1: he did not choose to do, and one each for
• 1:35:09
Speaker 1: the others. Chocho sn sang as she fixed herself at
• 1:35:12
Speaker 1: her peep hole so as not to disarrange her finery.
• 1:35:16
Speaker 1: Ragabye baby off in Japan. You just the picture of
• 1:35:20
Speaker 1: a fan. The maid tossed a baby like a ball
• 1:35:24
Speaker 1: into her lap, laughed Madame Butterfly. Once more, everything was
• 1:35:31
Speaker 1: at last quite as they had planned it. Now let
• 1:35:35
Speaker 1: him come, she said, in a charming defiance. Let him
• 1:35:39
Speaker 1: come quickly. And then the hour passed, Then two four
• 1:35:46
Speaker 1: night fell. They ceased to chatter. Later came perfect silence,
• 1:35:52
Speaker 1: then that other silence of the dead of the night.
• 1:35:56
Speaker 1: The pulses of terror quickened. Suzuki noiselessly delighted the lanterns. Later,
• 1:36:02
Speaker 1: at the shivering gesture from her mistress, she lighted the
• 1:36:06
Speaker 1: undon in the room, and then the hibachi. She had
• 1:36:09
Speaker 1: grown very cold. All night they watched, He had the
• 1:36:14
Speaker 1: careless habit of the night, But he did not come.
• 1:36:18
Speaker 1: And all the next day they watched, and many after,
• 1:36:21
Speaker 1: quite silent. Now always the baby wondered at this, and
• 1:36:25
Speaker 1: would look inquiringly from one to the other. It was
• 1:36:29
Speaker 1: very strange to him, this new silence. The house had
• 1:36:32
Speaker 1: been full always of their laughter and chatter, the patter
• 1:36:36
Speaker 1: of their feet, the sighing of the shoji. They did
• 1:36:39
Speaker 1: nothing now but watch and eat, a little, sleep, a
• 1:36:42
Speaker 1: little less and less of these. Finally, cho Cho's son
• 1:36:47
Speaker 1: could no longer hold the glass. She lay on the
• 1:36:50
Speaker 1: mats with the baby while the faithful handmaid watched. Every day,
• 1:36:55
Speaker 1: the faded flowers were replaced by purchased ones, cheaper and
• 1:36:59
Speaker 1: cheaper ones. The last money went for this and the
• 1:37:02
Speaker 1: candles which renewed the lights on the lanterns each night.
• 1:37:06
Speaker 1: These were not a thousand, were not a dozen. Now
• 1:37:11
Speaker 1: she did not think of going to him in destroying
• 1:37:14
Speaker 1: her Japanese conventions. This was the one thing that had
• 1:37:17
Speaker 1: been left in honor Yoshoku Mibia Bunko, the young Lady's
• 1:37:23
Speaker 1: old book of the Quorum. She had read that the
• 1:37:26
Speaker 1: only woman who seeks a male is a yujo, a courtesan.
• 1:37:31
Speaker 1: In a week, a passenger steamer came into the bay.
• 1:37:34
Speaker 1: They took no interest in her, but the next day,
• 1:37:37
Speaker 1: quite by accident, they saw him for the first time.
• 1:37:42
Speaker 1: He was on the deck of the strange ship. A
• 1:37:44
Speaker 1: blond woman was on his arm. They watched quite sleeplessly
• 1:37:48
Speaker 1: all that night. A few more lanterns were lighted. On
• 1:37:53
Speaker 1: the following morning, the warship had disappeared from the harbor.
• 1:37:58
Speaker 1: Chocho's son was frightened. The sinking at her heart. She
• 1:38:02
Speaker 1: now knew to be blacked out. Her little, unused, frivolous
• 1:38:06
Speaker 1: mind had not forecast such a catastrophe. There might have
• 1:38:10
Speaker 1: been a reason she had conceived for his detention aboard
• 1:38:13
Speaker 1: his ship. He was never very certain. She had not
• 1:38:17
Speaker 1: been sure that he was with her until the day
• 1:38:19
Speaker 1: before the position of the vessel had been unfavorable for observation.
• 1:38:25
Speaker 1: Chapter thirteen. The Good Consul's compassionate, lying demoralizations set in.
• 1:38:33
Speaker 1: Even the comfort of the maid was dulled. They decided
• 1:38:37
Speaker 1: that Chu Troussan should go to see the Good Consil,
• 1:38:39
Speaker 1: while the maid and the baby remained at home to
• 1:38:42
Speaker 1: welcome him. If perhaps he had not gone with the warship,
• 1:38:46
Speaker 1: they had already created this hope. The maid helped her
• 1:38:50
Speaker 1: down the steepest part of the hill. Nevertheless, when she
• 1:38:54
Speaker 1: arrived at the consulate, she was quite breathless. The consul
• 1:38:58
Speaker 1: was alone. There were no frivol That is now each
• 1:39:01
Speaker 1: knew that the other understood me. I got little hard illness.
• 1:39:07
Speaker 1: I think the girl panted in excuse of her lack
• 1:39:10
Speaker 1: of ceremony and a consul's pitying stare. She looked very ill,
• 1:39:15
Speaker 1: but her smile was still tragically bright. The Consul placed
• 1:39:20
Speaker 1: her a chair. She declined it. There was a moment
• 1:39:23
Speaker 1: of conscious silence. Then he went hesitatingly to his desk
• 1:39:28
Speaker 1: and got an envelope containing money, a large sum. He
• 1:39:33
Speaker 1: silently handed her this. She looked at him in appealing inquiry,
• 1:39:38
Speaker 1: but she did not take the money. It is only
• 1:39:42
Speaker 1: only in remembrance of the past. He wishes you to
• 1:39:46
Speaker 1: be always happy, as he says he is. He confidently
• 1:39:51
Speaker 1: hopes for your good wishes and congratulations. There was moisture
• 1:39:55
Speaker 1: in the Conseil's eyes, only questioning in hers. He sudden
• 1:40:00
Speaker 1: saw that she did not understand. He decided that she
• 1:40:04
Speaker 1: never should. He did not speak again, nor did she
• 1:40:07
Speaker 1: for a space. Then Happy, Happy, she murmured dizzily. But
• 1:40:17
Speaker 1: how can I be happy if he do not come?
• 1:40:20
Speaker 1: How can he be happy if if he do not come?
• 1:40:27
Speaker 1: The Consul was silent. He still held the money toward her.
• 1:40:31
Speaker 1: She tried to smile a little to make him think
• 1:40:34
Speaker 1: she was indifferent. Concerning his answer to the question, She
• 1:40:37
Speaker 1: was about to ask, ah, oh ah, you told him
• 1:40:43
Speaker 1: about that joke, that little joke we make on him.
• 1:40:49
Speaker 1: The consol pretended ignorance. She explained that about me gone
• 1:40:54
Speaker 1: merry with Yamadori and take his baby away. He had
• 1:40:59
Speaker 1: to answer, now, Oh, that was too too foolish to
• 1:41:05
Speaker 1: talk about seriously. Pinkerton had been glad to hear it.
• 1:41:11
Speaker 1: But you told him, she hoped, now he had not. Well,
• 1:41:20
Speaker 1: he looked out of the window. He would not strike,
• 1:41:23
Speaker 1: but she would be struck. But but you told him.
• 1:41:30
Speaker 1: She had raised her voice piteously, Yes, answered the consil, dully,
• 1:41:37
Speaker 1: wondering what he could say next. She gasped and wiped
• 1:41:41
Speaker 1: her dry lips. Yes, that's right, that's what I asked
• 1:41:47
Speaker 1: you do. And what he say? She questioned huskily. The
• 1:41:54
Speaker 1: Consil was willing to lie as deeply as the occasion
• 1:41:57
Speaker 1: might demand. The war wind the girl's faceted him. He
• 1:42:01
Speaker 1: saw in her attire the pitiful preparations to welcome the
• 1:42:05
Speaker 1: husband he now knew to be a craven, and in
• 1:42:08
Speaker 1: her face what it had cost to wait for him.
• 1:42:11
Speaker 1: But in specie the lie was difficult. Well, he began uncertainly.
• 1:42:18
Speaker 1: We it all happened about as you had supposed. He
• 1:42:23
Speaker 1: got very angry and would have rushed right up the
• 1:42:26
Speaker 1: hill as you thought, Only only what next? The wish
• 1:42:32
Speaker 1: to lie had grown upon him wondrously as he went on,
• 1:42:36
Speaker 1: But invention flagged. The despatches on his desk caught his eye.
• 1:42:42
Speaker 1: Only he was not permitted a moment's leave while in
• 1:42:45
Speaker 1: the harbor. He had all these dispatches to prepare for
• 1:42:49
Speaker 1: for his government the war. You know, all in cipher.
• 1:42:55
Speaker 1: He showed them to her. A brilliant thought came into
• 1:42:58
Speaker 1: his head. They're all in his handwriting. He had not
• 1:43:04
Speaker 1: written a line of them. His ship was ordered away
• 1:43:07
Speaker 1: suddenly to China. But he'll be back. Here's some of
• 1:43:11
Speaker 1: these fine days. And then the rest was for her.
• 1:43:16
Speaker 1: At any rate, he could lie no more. All all
• 1:43:21
Speaker 1: the gods in heaven bless you, she said, Sinking with
• 1:43:26
Speaker 1: the reaction, she reeled, and he put her into the chair.
• 1:43:31
Speaker 1: Her head fell limply back, and her pallid face looked
• 1:43:34
Speaker 1: up at him with the weary eyes closed. But there
• 1:43:37
Speaker 1: was rest and peace on it, and it was still
• 1:43:40
Speaker 1: very beautiful. Some one was approaching in haste, and he
• 1:43:44
Speaker 1: drew a screen before her. Chapter fourteen, The Blond Woman.
• 1:43:51
Speaker 1: A woman entered mister Sharpless, the American Consil. She asked,
• 1:43:58
Speaker 1: while crossing the threshold. The conseil bowed, Can you reach
• 1:44:03
Speaker 1: my husband at corber By telegraph. I think so? Who
• 1:44:08
Speaker 1: is your husband? He took up a writing pad as
• 1:44:11
Speaker 1: he spoke Lieutenant Pinkerton of their one moment. For God's sake,
• 1:44:18
Speaker 1: it was too late. The eyes of the little woman
• 1:44:21
Speaker 1: in the chair were fixed on his. They even tried
• 1:44:25
Speaker 1: to smile a little wearily at the poor result of
• 1:44:28
Speaker 1: his compassionate lying. She shook her head for silence. I
• 1:44:33
Speaker 1: beg your pardon. I am, I am ready, said the
• 1:44:37
Speaker 1: conseil roughly. He made no other explanation. Proceed I should
• 1:44:44
Speaker 1: like you to send this telegram. Just saw the baby
• 1:44:47
Speaker 1: and his nurse. Can't we have him at once? He
• 1:44:50
Speaker 1: is lovely? Shall see the mother about it to morrow.
• 1:44:54
Speaker 1: Was not at home when I was there to day.
• 1:44:57
Speaker 1: Expect to join you Wednesday week. Begg yo tomar, may
• 1:45:01
Speaker 1: I bring him along? Adelaide. As she advanced and saw
• 1:45:05
Speaker 1: Trocho San, she stopped in open admiration. How very charming,
• 1:45:11
Speaker 1: how lovely you are, dear? Will you kiss me, you
• 1:45:15
Speaker 1: pretty plaything? Tchrocho Sun stared at her with round eyes,
• 1:45:21
Speaker 1: as children do when afraid. Then her nostrils quivered and
• 1:45:26
Speaker 1: her lids slowly closed. No, she said, very softly, Ah, well,
• 1:45:33
Speaker 1: laughed the other. I don't blame you, they say you
• 1:45:37
Speaker 1: don't do that sort of thing two women. At any rate,
• 1:45:41
Speaker 1: I quite forgive our men for falling in love with you,
• 1:45:44
Speaker 1: thanks for permitting me to interrupt you. And mister sharpless,
• 1:45:49
Speaker 1: will you get that off? At once? Good day? She
• 1:45:53
Speaker 1: went with the hurry in which she had come. It
• 1:45:56
Speaker 1: was the blonde woman they had seen on the deck
• 1:45:58
Speaker 1: of the passenger steamer. They were quite silent after she
• 1:46:02
Speaker 1: was gone. The conseil still at his desk, his head
• 1:46:06
Speaker 1: bowed impotently in his hands. Chochou Sun rose presently and
• 1:46:11
Speaker 1: staggered toward him. She tried desperately to smile, but her
• 1:46:15
Speaker 1: lips were tightly drawn against her teeth. Searching unsteadily in
• 1:46:20
Speaker 1: her sleeve, she drew out a few small coins and
• 1:46:23
Speaker 1: held them out to him. He curiously took them on
• 1:46:26
Speaker 1: his palm. They are his all that is left of
• 1:46:31
Speaker 1: his beautiful money. I shall need no more give them
• 1:46:35
Speaker 1: to him. I like if you also say I sorry, no, no, no, glad,
• 1:46:43
Speaker 1: glad glad, She humbly sighed me. I I wish him
• 1:46:51
Speaker 1: that happiness seemed like he wished for himself and and
• 1:46:55
Speaker 1: me me I shall be happy, May be tell him
• 1:47:01
Speaker 1: I shall be happy. Her head drooped for a moment.
• 1:47:06
Speaker 1: When she raised it, she was quite emotionless, if one
• 1:47:09
Speaker 1: might judge from her face, Thank him that, mister B. F. Pickerton,
• 1:47:16
Speaker 1: also for all that kindness he have been unto me.
• 1:47:20
Speaker 1: Permit me to thank you, augustness, for that same you you.
• 1:47:27
Speaker 1: She could smile a little now at the pretty recollection.
• 1:47:30
Speaker 1: Then the tears came slowly into her eyes. You the
• 1:47:35
Speaker 1: most best nice man in all the whole world. She
• 1:47:40
Speaker 1: closed her eyes a moment and stood quite still. The
• 1:47:44
Speaker 1: conseil sat below his breath. Pinkerton on all such as
• 1:47:48
Speaker 1: he good night, said Chochosan, And at the door, looking back, sayonara,
• 1:47:56
Speaker 1: and another tired smile. She staggered a little as she
• 1:48:00
Speaker 1: went out alance. You also have seen her, wailed the
• 1:48:06
Speaker 1: intuitive little maid as she let her mistress in. And
• 1:48:10
Speaker 1: she is more beautiful than the sun goddess, answered chou Chusan.
• 1:48:14
Speaker 1: The maid knelt to take off her shoes. She sing,
• 1:48:18
Speaker 1: me just a plaything. She generously tried to smile at
• 1:48:24
Speaker 1: the maid who was weeping. She touched her hair caressingly
• 1:48:28
Speaker 1: as she knelt. Don't weep. For me, little maiden, A
• 1:48:32
Speaker 1: count her disappoint a little disappoint. Don't weep for me.
• 1:48:38
Speaker 1: A little while ago you asked me to rest peace, sleep,
• 1:48:43
Speaker 1: she said, after a while wearily, Well, go away, and
• 1:48:47
Speaker 1: I will rest now. I wish to rest, sleep, long,
• 1:48:54
Speaker 1: long sleep. And I pray you look when you see
• 1:48:58
Speaker 1: me again, whether I be not again beautiful again as
• 1:49:02
Speaker 1: a bride. The maid did not go once more. She
• 1:49:07
Speaker 1: understood her mistress. But I think you loath me, The
• 1:49:13
Speaker 1: girl sobbed. Therefore, go that I suffer no more, Go
• 1:49:20
Speaker 1: that I rest peace, sleep, long, beautiful sleep. Go, I beg.
• 1:49:28
Speaker 1: She gently took her hands and led her out. Farewell,
• 1:49:33
Speaker 1: little maiden, she said, softly, closing the shoji don't weep.
• 1:49:42
Speaker 1: Chapter fifteen, When the robins nest again, she sat quite
• 1:49:48
Speaker 1: still and waited till night fell. Then she lighted the
• 1:49:52
Speaker 1: undon and drew her toilet glass toward her. She had
• 1:49:56
Speaker 1: a sword in her lap as she sat down. It
• 1:49:59
Speaker 1: was the one thing of her father's which her relatives
• 1:50:01
Speaker 1: had permitted her to keep. It would have been very
• 1:50:05
Speaker 1: beautiful to a Japanese to whom the sword is a soul.
• 1:50:09
Speaker 1: A golden dragon writhed upon the superb scabbard. He had
• 1:50:12
Speaker 1: eyes of rubies and held in his mouth a sphere
• 1:50:15
Speaker 1: of crystal, which meant many mystical things to a Japanese.
• 1:50:20
Speaker 1: The guard was a coiled serpent of exquisite workmanship. The
• 1:50:24
Speaker 1: blade was tempered into vague shapes of beasts at the edge.
• 1:50:28
Speaker 1: It was signed Ikesada to her father. It had been
• 1:50:33
Speaker 1: honor on the blade, with this inscription to die with
• 1:50:37
Speaker 1: honor when one can no longer live with honor. It
• 1:50:42
Speaker 1: was in obscure ideographs, but it was also written on
• 1:50:45
Speaker 1: her father's chaimo at the shrine, and she knew it
• 1:50:48
Speaker 1: well to die with honor. She drew the blade affectionately
• 1:50:54
Speaker 1: across her palm. Then she made herself pretty with vermilion
• 1:50:59
Speaker 1: and powder and perfumes, and she prayed humbly, endeavoring at
• 1:51:03
Speaker 1: the last to make her peace. She had not forgotten
• 1:51:07
Speaker 1: the missionary's religion, but on the dark road from death
• 1:51:11
Speaker 1: to Maido, it seemed best now to trust herself to
• 1:51:14
Speaker 1: the compassionate augustnesses who had always been true. Then she
• 1:51:19
Speaker 1: placed the point of the weapon at that nearly nerveless
• 1:51:22
Speaker 1: spot in the neck known to every Japanese, and began
• 1:51:26
Speaker 1: to press it slowly inward. She could not help a
• 1:51:29
Speaker 1: little gasp but the first incision. But presently she could
• 1:51:33
Speaker 1: feel the blood finding its way down her neck. It
• 1:51:37
Speaker 1: divided on her shoulder, the larger stream going down her bosom.
• 1:51:41
Speaker 1: In a moment she could see it making its way
• 1:51:44
Speaker 1: daintily between her breasts. It began to congeal there. She
• 1:51:49
Speaker 1: pressed on the sword, and a fresh stream swiftly over,
• 1:51:52
Speaker 1: and the other redder, she thought, And then suddenly she
• 1:51:57
Speaker 1: could no longer see it, drew the mirror closer. Her
• 1:52:02
Speaker 1: hand was heavy, and the mirror seemed far away. She
• 1:52:06
Speaker 1: knew that she must hasten. But even as she locked
• 1:52:09
Speaker 1: her fingers on the serpent of the guard, something within
• 1:52:13
Speaker 1: her cried out piteously. They had taught her how to die,
• 1:52:17
Speaker 1: but he had taught her how to live, nay, to
• 1:52:20
Speaker 1: make life sweet. Yet that was the reason she must die,
• 1:52:26
Speaker 1: strange reason. She now first knew that it was sad
• 1:52:30
Speaker 1: to die. He had come and substituted himself for everything.
• 1:52:36
Speaker 1: He had gone and left her nothing, nothing but this.
• 1:52:42
Speaker 1: The maid softly put the baby into the room. She
• 1:52:45
Speaker 1: pinched him, and he began to cry, Oh, pitiful, Kwannon. Nothing.
• 1:52:53
Speaker 1: The sword fell dully to the floor. The stream between
• 1:52:57
Speaker 1: her breasts darkened and stopped. Her head drooped slowly forward,
• 1:53:03
Speaker 1: her arms penitently outstretched themselves towards the shrine. She wept,
• 1:53:09
Speaker 1: Oh pitiful Quannon. She prayed. The baby crept cooing into
• 1:53:15
Speaker 1: her lap. The little maid came in and bound up
• 1:53:19
Speaker 1: the wound. When Missus Pinkerton called next day at the
• 1:53:24
Speaker 1: little house on Higasche Hill, it was quite empty. End
