Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Jesus Loves Me: The Simple Poem that Reached the World
Transcript
- 0:00One of the most powerful truths in the whole world is carried in one of the smallest sentences.
- 0:21Three simple words have crossed oceans, slipped into hospital rooms, comforted frightened
- 0:25children, steadied missionaries, and has been sung in churches across the world.
- 0:30Jesus loves me.
- 0:33Simple enough for a child, strong enough for a soldier, deep enough for eternity.
- 0:40But behind that simple song stands a story of two sisters whose quiet faithfulness still
- 0:46blesses the world, Anna and Susan Horner.
- 0:51Welcome to another edition of Traveler's Tales produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:55I'm Greg Dowdy.
- 0:56Thank the Lord for men and women in past generations who were surrendered to Christ.
- 1:02Their contribution to the kingdom of God must not be forgotten.
- 1:07Anna and Susan Horner were born into privilege in New York.
- 1:12Their early years were marked by comfort and culture.
- 1:15But when disaster struck their family, everything changed.
- 1:19The fortune vanished, the comforts faded, the future looked uncertain.
- 1:25They moved to Constitution Island across from West Point and lived in what many would have
- 1:30considered reduced circumstances, even poverty.
- 1:35But here is what makes their story so remarkable.
- 1:38When their resources diminished, their ministry did not.
- 1:43Rather than withdrawing into disappointment, they poured themselves into gospel work.
- 1:49Each week they would row their small boat across the river to bring cadets from the
- 1:53United States Military Academy to Bible classes.
- 1:57It almost sounds comical, two women in a rowboat with an open Bible in hand with a handful
- 2:04of young men in uniform.
- 2:06No platform, no spotlight, no applause, just steady faithful service.
- 2:12And over time, those cadets would carry the influence of those Bible lessons around the
- 2:17world.
- 2:19Susan Horner was a gifted novelist.
- 2:22Her book, The Wide, Wide World, became one of the most popular novels in the 19th century.
- 2:28In one scene, a dying child needs comfort.
- 2:32Susan needed a simple song for that moment in the story.
- 2:36So she turned to a poem that her sister, Anna, had written, Jesus Loves Me, This I Know.
- 2:44Later it was set to music by William Bradbury, and that poem became one of the most recognized
- 2:50hymns in Christian history.
- 2:53It has been sung in countless languages, learned at many a mother's knees.
- 2:58It has been whispered at hospital beds.
- 3:00The song, Jesus Loves Me, deeply impacted Amy Carmichael, a little brown-eyed girl who
- 3:06would eventually become a missionary, all flowing from the pen of a woman living quietly
- 3:11on an island.
- 3:13That's the power of a simple truth rooted in Scripture.
- 3:17John 3.16 declares the love of God for the whole world.
- 3:22Romans 5.8 reminds us that in a demonstration of His love, Christ died for us while we were
- 3:29yet sinners.
- 3:30The Warner sisters did not create that truth.
- 3:34They simply carried it, and carried it faithfully.
- 3:37For decades, Anna and Susan ministered to West Point cadets.
- 3:42Their influence was so deeply respected that they became two of the only civilians ever
- 3:48buried in the West Point Cemetery with military honors.
- 3:53They never commanded troops, nor did they ever wear a uniform, but they were used by
- 3:58God to influence lives with the gospel of Christ.
- 4:03Their story reminds us that influence is not measured by visibility.
- 4:08It is measured by faithfulness.
- 4:11You may not write a hymn that is sung around the world.
- 4:15You may not publish a best-selling novel.
- 4:17You may not row across a river to reach soldiers for Christ.
- 4:22But you do have something, an ability, an opportunity, a place where God has planted
- 4:27you.
- 4:28And the question is not, how much do I have?
- 4:31The question is, will I yield what I have?
- 4:35The Warner sisters lost their fortune, but they did not lose their focus.
- 4:40They made the most of what they had and entrusted it to the Lord.
- 4:44And here is a stirring truth.
- 4:47God delights in using simple faithfulness to bring about eternal impact.
- 4:52A children's song, a Sunday school lesson, a quiet Bible study, a rowboat crossing a
- 4:58river.
- 4:59Small things in faithful hands can become mighty tools in God's purposes.
- 5:05So let me ask you, where has God placed you?
- 5:09In a classroom?
- 5:11In a church nursery?
- 5:12In a neighborhood?
- 5:14In a workplace?
- 5:16Don't despise the simplicity of your assignment.
- 5:19Jesus Loves Me may seem elementary, but it carries the depth of heaven, and the love
- 5:25declared in John 3.16 is still the message this world needs most.
- 5:31May the lives of Anna and Susan Warner stir us to cheerful, steady faithfulness, to use
- 5:37our abilities, our opportunities, and even our limitations for the glory of Christ.
- 5:43Because when love for Christ guides a life, even a simple song can circle the world.
