- 0:00Welcome to North Shore News and Interviews on Amherst Island Radio.
- 0:13Each week we keep you updated on newsworthy events, happenings, and conversations that
- 0:18we've had with people in the local community and beyond.
- 0:25The first ever Bath Art Fest is taking place Saturday, September 14th, hosted by the Hive
- 0:29Artist Collective in Centennial Park.
- 0:32Over 30 artists will be featured from 10am to 4pm alongside live music.
- 0:36One of the owners of the hive, Amanda Lloyd, explains how the day will be set up.
- 0:40We're setting it up a little differently than other art festivals.
- 0:43We're calling it kind of like a home village vibe.
- 0:46So all of the tents are going to be on the perimeter of the park and facing the center
- 0:51and then in the center is going to be the music.
- 0:54We're going to have this painting for kids.
- 0:56We have a big raffle.
- 0:57Most of the hive artists have donated a piece to be raffled off.
- 1:02Lloyd describes some of the other types of vendors that will be at the event.
- 1:05We have jewelers, we have ceramists, we have potters, we have some fabric artists too who
- 1:12are going to be there so you can shop your heart's content there and then maybe wander
- 1:17down into the village for some coffee and some food and some more shopping experience.
- 1:24Amanda Lloyd explains the experience they hope to create and notes some of the local businesses
- 1:28involved.
- 1:29It's a village day.
- 1:30That's what we just want everyone to come out and hang out at the village.
- 1:33Have a hang out by the water, you know, to bring the kids down.
- 1:36We really want people to come in, check out local artists, but then take a stroll down
- 1:42to the village because we wouldn't be able to run this without the businesses who kind
- 1:48of have sponsored us.
- 1:50So we're hoping people will go down to the commons, books on me, the lodge for coffee.
- 1:57Lloyd also noted they hope to make it an annual event.
- 1:59Bath Art Fest will take place rain or shine.
- 2:02For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.
- 2:07This is North Shore News.
- 2:13The L&A Studio Tour takes place this year, September 7th and 8th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- 2:18each day.
- 2:19It will be the first time studios are hosting live music along with the event.
- 2:23The L&A Studio Tour gives participants the chance to meet artists in their studios and
- 2:27homes, learn about their artistic process, and purchase new artwork from the artists.
- 2:31The event features over 32 artists located in 17 studios throughout the county.
- 2:36The L&A Studio Tour is a self-guided tour leading through rural areas with historic
- 2:41towns, villages, and hamlets.
- 2:43Amanda Lloyd, one of the owners of the Hive Artist Collective in Bath, notes the four
- 2:47members they'll be featuring in their studio.
- 2:50The L&A Studio Tour is really cool.
- 2:52So they have over 30 artists a part of that program.
- 2:57And so only four of the Hive members will be showing in our gallery.
- 3:02So you'll really get a chance to see a little bit more from myself, Amanda Lloyd, David
- 3:09Slack, Lisa Leskin, and Shannon Dickey.
- 3:12Lloyd describes the rest of the weekend and where to find other artists in the county.
- 3:16The rest of the tour, you'll be able to see other Hive artists in their actual studios
- 3:23and other artists, local artists in their studios from NapaNee and from Amherstview,
- 3:30Bath.
- 3:31It's a really, really cool, fun weekend to kind of take a local adventure.
- 3:39Lloyd, note some of the fun activities happening in the studios throughout the tour.
- 3:44You get to meet the artists and all of them have different cool things running in their
- 3:47studios like Little Raffles and Giveaways.
- 3:50And a lot of the studios have music.
- 3:53We have music all day, which is really cool for both days, Saturday and Sunday.
- 3:57Lloyd describes the welcoming nature of artists in their studios.
- 4:00All the artists just love chatting about their art.
- 4:03So it's always fun to have people come in and, you know, we get a chance to talk to
- 4:10the community and get to know us.
- 4:12And yeah, we just want to be, we just want to share.
- 4:15That's all we want to do.
- 4:17For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.
- 4:22This is North Shore News.
- 4:28Loyalist Township announced that Deputy Mayor Nathan Townend was elected to the Association
- 4:33of Municipalities Ontario Board in the rural caucus.
- 4:37There were nine candidates vying for four spots during the 2024 to 2026 term.
- 4:42Townend will be representing Loyalist Township and Lennox and Addington County.
- 4:47Townend describes the work that the Association does.
- 4:50The Association of Municipalities of Ontario, so AMAL, is basically the association that
- 4:56represents and advocates for the over 400 municipalities in the province.
- 5:01And so the main work that they do is advocacy work, you know, issues that are kind of across
- 5:06the board that municipalities face and advocate the province, because we are creatures of
- 5:13the province as municipalities, advocates to the province on municipalities behalf, and
- 5:18also develops policy, you know, to advise the government on policy that the government
- 5:25themselves is implementing, you know, so it's kind of a commentary on government policy,
- 5:31but then also suggesting policy, you know, that positively addresses the challenges that
- 5:39municipalities face.
- 5:41Townend explains the type of work he'll be doing as a member of the board.
- 5:44When you're a member of the board in whatever caucus you're elected to, I'm elected to
- 5:49the rural caucus, so I'm particularly representing rural issues.
- 5:54You know, when you're on the board, you are essentially working to develop policy and
- 6:01also advocate for municipalities to the province.
- 6:06Townend describes the benefits of the county and township having a member on the board.
- 6:10The benefit to Loyalist Township and to Lenox and Addington County is obviously having someone,
- 6:17someone you trust and someone you know understands your issues being at that table, essentially,
- 6:22and it's good to have someone from Eastern Ontario there.
- 6:24So between myself, Robin Jones, the president-elect, is from Westport.
- 6:31Brian Patterson is on the large urban caucus.
- 6:33He's the mayor of Kingston.
- 6:36Krista Lowry is the chair of rural caucus.
- 6:39She's from Mississippi Mills, so, you know, that's a couple of people right there that
- 6:42are from Eastern Ontario, and I'm obviously one of those too.
- 6:46We're Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative.
- 6:58Ontario Culinary, along with the Culinary Tourism Alliance, are hosting a Feast On event
- 7:03featuring six chefs from the area happening this fall at McKinnon Brothers Brewing Company.
- 7:08Feast On the Farm, a taste of southeastern Ontario, takes place Saturday, September 28th, from
- 7:135 to 8 p.m.
- 7:15Feast On is a certification program for restaurants and purveyors in Ontario.
- 7:20Ontario Culinary says the program recognizes businesses committed to sourcing Ontario-grown
- 7:24food and drink.
- 7:25The other part of their aim is to make it easier for food lovers to find local food.
- 7:29Each chef will be showcasing their creations using seasonal produce and ingredients from
- 7:33the region.
- 7:34The array of different dishes will also be paired with local craft beverages.
- 7:38Marketing manager for the Culinary Tourism Alliance, Gabrielle Mueller, explains the
- 7:42goals behind their Feast On events.
- 7:44The goal really is to celebrate the unique taste of place of southeastern Ontario.
- 7:49All the chefs that are featured at the Feast On the Farm event are Feast On certified.
- 7:54So really we're celebrating chefs that are going the extra mile to source seasonal and
- 8:00Ontario-based produce, meats, and other ingredients.
- 8:05And really we just want to take this time to celebrate that.
- 8:08It's harvest season.
- 8:09It's all you can eat.
- 8:11So inviting folks to come on out and eat and taste how much better things taste when they're
- 8:17in season.
- 8:18Mueller notes the range of local beverages that will be on hand as well.
- 8:21I do want to shout out our local drink producers.
- 8:24Of course McKinnon Brothers Brewing, they're hosting us.
- 8:26So we will be serving up their craft beverages as well as craft wine from Carlow Estates Winery
- 8:32in Prince Edward County, Hardway Cider, and Mohawk Soda.
- 8:37So it should be a real all around great time.
- 8:40For Amherst Island Radio and the Local Journalism Initiative, I'm Ted Evans.
