Latest / Foul Territory / Jim Bowden's Front Office Unfiltered: Trade needs for teams, Giants selling BIG, Suspend Devers?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Okay, let's get the trade talk going here. It's front
- 0:11Speaker 1: office unfiltered. We're going to be talking to Jim Boden
- 0:14Speaker 1: more frequently over these next six weeks. JBR resident GM
- 0:17Speaker 1: joining us, and he laid out basically what every team
- 0:21Speaker 1: needs heading into this trade deadline, both in the Athletic
- 0:24Speaker 1: and on the latest episode of GM Territories. So, JB,
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm going to start with the team that's popped up
- 0:28Speaker 1: over the past twenty four hours based on Buster Posey
- 0:30Speaker 1: admitting like, yeah, this is done. Put a fork in us.
- 0:33Speaker 1: We're open for business. Call us, let's start making deals.
- 0:36Speaker 1: But not just the Giants angle who wants some of
- 0:38Speaker 1: his guys? Where could you see a Robbie Ray, Luisa
- 0:41Speaker 1: Rise or a Matt Chapman go.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, great, questions in the San Francisco Giants right now?
- 0:46Speaker 2: Really one of only there's only two teams in baseball
- 0:50Speaker 2: that are more than seven games out of the playoffs, right,
- 0:52Speaker 2: the Giants and the Rockies are the only two, right,
- 0:55Speaker 2: And so for the Giants, obviously, Buster Posey wanted the
- 0:59Speaker 2: word out there clearly that Logan Webb is the only
- 1:02Speaker 2: player he won't talk about. But he's got a problem
- 1:05Speaker 2: because a lot of the assets he wants to move,
- 1:08Speaker 2: like Raphael Devers, it's not movable because of the contract.
- 1:11Speaker 2: So we'll see how much he's willing to pay down
- 1:14Speaker 2: on some of these deals. But you know, you talk
- 1:15Speaker 2: about Devers, he's got seven years, two hundred and twenty
- 1:18Speaker 2: five million left, and we saw how we acted in
- 1:21Speaker 2: Boston when they asked him to change positions, and then
- 1:24Speaker 2: we saw what happened when they tried to pinch run
- 1:26Speaker 2: for him. I can't see another team willing to take
- 1:30Speaker 2: on that kind of money or anything close to it
- 1:32Speaker 2: and take the headaches that come with him as well.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Matt Chapman's thirty four years old, four years left on
- 1:38Speaker 2: that contract. Agent decline is there. Although he's playing better recently,
- 1:43Speaker 2: gms aren't going to look at that contract and take
- 1:46Speaker 2: that on either, so they're in a difficult position. I
- 1:49Speaker 2: do think Robbie Ray gets moved. I think he's the
- 1:51Speaker 2: most obvious of all of them, and you know, there
- 1:54Speaker 2: are a lot of teams that are looking for a
- 1:56Speaker 2: fourth or fifth type starter where he would be an upgrade.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So I definitely think he gets moved.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I hear that.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Lewis rise, there are teams that have interested in him
- 2:06Speaker 2: as well, and because he's improved defensively thanks to the
- 2:09Speaker 2: hard work with Ron Washington, the fact that he can
- 2:11Speaker 2: play first base, second base, dh create traffic. Yes, he
- 2:15Speaker 2: doesn't have power, nor does he have speed, but the
- 2:18Speaker 2: traffic's important for some of these lineups. So I think
- 2:21Speaker 2: Ray and a Rise are the most likely to go.
- 2:24Speaker 2: But we'll see.
- 2:25Speaker 3: You never know.
- 2:26Speaker 2: In this game, We've seen a lot of contracts we
- 2:28Speaker 2: didn't think would get moved that eventually do get moved.
- 2:31Speaker 2: But I think Buster Posey's got a lot of work
- 2:33Speaker 2: in front of him.
- 2:35Speaker 4: DoD Buster Posey play his hand too early in a
- 2:38Speaker 4: sense of not that they're going to trade, because I
- 2:41Speaker 4: don't really care, you know, I think everybody should be
- 2:43Speaker 4: trading right away, but playing his hand saying I don't
- 2:46Speaker 4: want Web or was it a genius move? Or I
- 2:48Speaker 4: don't want to trade Web or is that a genius move?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Making Web look more valuable than he already was as
- 2:55Speaker 4: one of the better pitchers in the game.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Buster is being honest and trans parent
- 3:00Speaker 2: with everybody. I don't think he moves Web. I don't
- 3:03Speaker 2: think he'll talk about Web. You know, I know there
- 3:05Speaker 2: are a couple of gms I've talked to that have
- 3:07Speaker 2: inquired and Buster has told them the same thing. He
- 3:10Speaker 2: said publicly, I'm not going to move web. That's our
- 3:12Speaker 2: race and that's what that's what you build around. So yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 2: I take him for his word on this one. I
- 3:17Speaker 2: don't think he's playing games. And I think the reason
- 3:20Speaker 2: why it's okay for him to come out and say
- 3:22Speaker 2: what he's saying is it's just too obvious for everybody.
- 3:25Speaker 2: This is not a good baseball team. This is not
- 3:28Speaker 2: a team that can figure it out. And he wants
- 3:31Speaker 2: to make sure that everybody knows that he is selling
- 3:34Speaker 2: because understand this, right, we don't have this is going
- 3:37Speaker 2: to be a buyers and seller's trade deadline. That's not
- 3:40Speaker 2: what this is. This is going to be contender to
- 3:42Speaker 2: contender trades. San Francisco right now is the only team
- 3:47Speaker 2: out there that has assets that are saying they're available,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and he wants to do it early because what happens
- 3:54Speaker 2: when you get to August third, there'll be five or
- 3:56Speaker 2: six more teams that are going to join him, probably
- 3:59Speaker 2: as at that point. He wants to get ahead of
- 4:02Speaker 2: the curve. And remember when he traded for Devers. He
- 4:05Speaker 2: got ahead of the curve, so he's kind of got
- 4:07Speaker 2: a track record of looking at his teams in June
- 4:10Speaker 2: and figuring out what he wants to do and where
- 4:12Speaker 2: he wants to go ahead of everybody else.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I'm going to the Yankees here real quick. I want
- 4:17Speaker 5: to talk about them in their needs right handed hitting catcher.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Of course, as they've been talking about Austin Wells have
- 4:24Speaker 5: been struggling Escara Ali Sanchez. They need to find somebody there,
- 4:29Speaker 5: for sure. I'm a little more concerned about the bullpen.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Who do you Is there anybody out there that you
- 4:35Speaker 5: think the Yankees as of now could be looking forward
- 4:39Speaker 5: to build that bullpen up a little bit better so
- 4:41Speaker 5: they can make a push towards the playoffs.
- 4:42Speaker 6: Are we a little too early right now?
- 4:44Speaker 2: And talk no Todd the answers to triple A. You
- 4:47Speaker 2: don't have to make a trade. It's Carlos so Granier
- 4:49Speaker 2: right there was one hundred and one hundred and two.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Whatever it is.
- 4:52Speaker 2: They're putting him in the role, They're putting him in
- 4:54Speaker 2: high leverage situations. They are getting him ready. He is
- 4:57Speaker 2: their guy to set up Bednard. So they don't have
- 5:00Speaker 2: the trade for it. Now just for the fans, the
- 5:03Speaker 2: listeners do understand I got the needs. These aren't my
- 5:07Speaker 2: opinion of the needs of the teams. These come directly
- 5:10Speaker 2: from the GMS and the presidents of twenty nine of
- 5:13Speaker 2: the thirty teams. I never heard back from the Angels,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but the other twenty nine teams where I mentioned the needs,
- 5:19Speaker 2: it's coming directly from them. And obviously it's subject to change.
- 5:22Speaker 2: When I talked to Arizona, they were talking about a
- 5:24Speaker 2: left hand hitting, power hitter and bullpen. But since then
- 5:29Speaker 2: two starting pitchers went down, so obviously starting pitching becomes
- 5:32Speaker 2: a need for them.
- 5:33Speaker 3: So it's always subject to change. But getting back to.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The Yankees, they're very clear right and hitting catcher Ryan
- 5:39Speaker 2: Jeffers of the Twins is the name that keeps being
- 5:41Speaker 2: bandied about the most once he gets back from the
- 5:43Speaker 2: IL and then you know, Brian Cashman always wants to
- 5:46Speaker 2: build a bullpen up and so you know, I don't
- 5:48Speaker 2: know where he's going to go, but I do know
- 5:51Speaker 2: the first solution is Legronier in the minor leagues. He's
- 5:54Speaker 2: an exciting arm. I got the same him in spring training.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I got goosebumps just looking at him and he's got
- 5:59Speaker 2: the makeup and character to match. He's a guy that's
- 6:02Speaker 2: going to be able to handle the big league, So
- 6:04Speaker 2: look forward to that. And then in terms of relievers,
- 6:07Speaker 2: you know a name that keeps coming out as a
- 6:09Speaker 2: kind of a depth play is Antonio Sanzatela of the
- 6:12Speaker 2: Colorado Rockies and Seth Halverson, his teammate. Both those guys
- 6:17Speaker 2: have good arms. There's a lot of scouts that have
- 6:19Speaker 2: been watching those two guys and at some point they're
- 6:21Speaker 2: probably going to get moved between now and the deadline,
- 6:24Speaker 2: and they could be fits for the Yankees as well.
- 6:26Speaker 1: It's a must read article just for what JB is
- 6:29Speaker 1: talking about. It's not just like JB coming up with
- 6:31Speaker 1: ideas for the teams, which he can do very well,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but directly getting information from the teams. Besides the ciaaka
- 6:38Speaker 1: the Angels, they just can't tell anyone what they're doing
- 6:40Speaker 1: right now, but that's okay. We have an idea of
- 6:42Speaker 1: what they should do, like trade some of their guys
- 6:45Speaker 1: that they often don't trade at the deadline. I digress.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I had a follow up for you, though, JB, before
- 6:50Speaker 1: I went on a tangent. So my question for you
- 6:52Speaker 1: revolves around ealders Chapman. We actually just were busy last week,
- 6:55Speaker 1: didn't get to this topic. But why do you think
- 6:57Speaker 1: the Yankees would kind of publicly rule him out already
- 7:00Speaker 1: based on how they had a little mix up a
- 7:03Speaker 1: few years back. And I get it, he's on the
- 7:05Speaker 1: Red Sox. The Red Sox trading their guy to the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yankees and them help that helping them win a World
- 7:10Speaker 1: Series or something.
- 7:10Speaker 7: It's very unlikely.
- 7:11Speaker 1: But my point is he's one of the best closures available, Like,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you can't make amends on something from years ago.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Hey, you can make amends if you want. I mean,
- 7:19Speaker 2: but just go back in history. Right, It's twenty twenty two.
- 7:23Speaker 2: You're in the middle of a pennant race and during
- 7:26Speaker 2: the season, your closer goes and gets a tattoo and
- 7:30Speaker 2: gets an infection and then can't pitch for you. I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you could have gotten a tattoo in the off season.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So then you have a mandatory workout as you're getting
- 7:39Speaker 2: ready for the playoffs, and he doesn't show up, and
- 7:42Speaker 2: he gets on a plane and he goes to Miami,
- 7:45Speaker 2: and so who should be apologizing to who? So they
- 7:47Speaker 2: left him off the postseason roster, which was the right
- 7:50Speaker 2: decision to make. And now Chapman says they'd have to
- 7:53Speaker 2: Apollo or Brian CASHMSS apologize to me before I would
- 7:57Speaker 2: be traded there, Like what No? So I think there
- 8:02Speaker 2: are times in baseball where you can burn your bridges
- 8:05Speaker 2: and that that bridge is gone. So they're not going
- 8:09Speaker 2: to trade for Chapman. They don't want to relive it.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I do think a role as Chapman has changed quite
- 8:14Speaker 2: a bit in the last four years. I think he's
- 8:16Speaker 2: grown up. I don't hear stories about him being out
- 8:19Speaker 2: at three am smoking cigars anymore. You know, he's figured
- 8:23Speaker 2: it out. He's throwing strikes. He's one of the best
- 8:25Speaker 2: closers in the game, you know. Personally, to me, I
- 8:28Speaker 2: just want to win, So I would forgive him if
- 8:30Speaker 2: I traded for him. But I think there's some bad
- 8:33Speaker 2: blood there that's hard to take away. When you didn't
- 8:36Speaker 2: win the World Championship in twenty two and you look
- 8:39Speaker 2: back at what he did to the team, I think
- 8:42Speaker 2: that stays with you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: For a while.
- 8:46Speaker 4: When my puppy Bella has something wrong, I'm not going
- 8:49Speaker 4: to go around googling what to do.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Yeah, Kratz, let's have a better plan.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Today's episode is sponsored by the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Program.

- 9:41Speaker 1: The ASPCA is not an insurance and is not engaged
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the business of insurance.
- 9:46Speaker 4: I got more of a general question as we keep
- 9:48Speaker 4: going to teams, but you hit on the fact that
- 9:51Speaker 4: the Yankees may want a right handed hitting catcher, And
- 9:54Speaker 4: you talked about Jeffers, what is the hardest need to fill?
- 9:59Speaker 4: Because when I look catchers that have moved at the deadline,
- 10:02Speaker 4: we're talking about guys that are like kind of backups
- 10:05Speaker 4: that then may have to fit into a role. So
- 10:08Speaker 4: I think catching is an outfield because everybody trades for
- 10:12Speaker 4: bullpen arms, but what position or what area of need
- 10:15Speaker 4: and then we could hit other teams? Is the hardest
- 10:18Speaker 4: to fill at the trade deadline in general? Obviously, a
- 10:21Speaker 4: year to year can change.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Yeah, every year is different.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I keep hearing from teams how hard it is to
- 10:27Speaker 2: get a right handed hitting middle of the order back.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I hear that more than anything else from people this year.
- 10:33Speaker 2: You know, I found the needs to be fascinating. And
- 10:35Speaker 2: I don't mean to digress here, but the thirty teams,
- 10:39Speaker 2: did you notice only eight teams are looking for starting pitching,
- 10:42Speaker 2: Like normally that numbers twenty or twenty two. There was
- 10:46Speaker 2: only eight, and some of the teams that are obviously
- 10:50Speaker 2: need another starter. The answer was bullpen. We'll just get
- 10:53Speaker 2: bullpen arms and figure it out from there. I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 2: the game has changed a lot. I get it, but
- 10:57Speaker 2: I thought that was kind of fascinating. But to answer
- 11:00Speaker 2: your question, I would say, based on what the gms
- 11:02Speaker 2: are telling me, right hand hitting corner outfielder is really
- 11:07Speaker 2: hard to get right now.
- 11:09Speaker 4: So I assume that's what you were gonna say, and
- 11:12Speaker 4: that's why I'm gonna go to the Phillies. Is that
- 11:14Speaker 4: need going to be able to be filled by one
- 11:17Speaker 4: of the most aggressive gms in our game in Dombrowski
- 11:20Speaker 4: for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if he can fill it. I
- 11:24Speaker 2: don't know where he would. Here's one of the problems
- 11:27Speaker 2: that he has. Right There are some players like Joe
- 11:31Speaker 2: Adell of the Angels that would be a nice fit
- 11:33Speaker 2: and they should be selling, But for whatever reason, GM's
- 11:37Speaker 2: tell me they're not selling. So you know, where do
- 11:40Speaker 2: you fill that need? Byron Buxton would be a really
- 11:44Speaker 2: good fit for the Philadelphia Phillies. But Jeremy Zola's telling
- 11:48Speaker 2: teams he's not trading bucks, then he has no trade rights.
- 11:50Speaker 2: He's got the Twins tattooed on his body.
- 11:53Speaker 3: It looks like he's not going anywhere.
- 11:56Speaker 2: The San Francisco Giants really don't have that piece for him,
- 11:59Speaker 2: So I don't know where that is. The other issue
- 12:02Speaker 2: that Dave has. He doesn't have a lot to trade, right.
- 12:06Speaker 2: I mean, yes, he's got a couple of prospects that
- 12:08Speaker 2: he could move, but unless he wants to move and
- 12:11Speaker 2: Andrew Painter or Aiden Miller, it's going to be a
- 12:14Speaker 2: difficult fill because even this major league team has a
- 12:17Speaker 2: lot of average or below average players on it, So
- 12:21Speaker 2: I think it's going to be very difficult for him
- 12:23Speaker 2: to fill. But I will never ever bet against Dave
- 12:26Speaker 2: Dombrowski at the trade deadline.
- 12:28Speaker 4: You've mentioned tattoos twice, so maybe hey, maybe no comment needed,
- 12:32Speaker 4: no answer need, but maybe Jim has gotten a tattoo
- 12:34Speaker 4: recently so he's thinking about it. But would Dombrowski and
- 12:39Speaker 4: what you know of Bryce Harper, would he move to
- 12:42Speaker 4: the outfield to be able to fill that need at
- 12:46Speaker 4: first base? And if that's the case, who could be
- 12:49Speaker 4: a possible first base addition? If Bryce Harper is willing
- 12:52Speaker 4: to move to the outfield, which he said he would,
- 12:54Speaker 4: if they were able to sign like a Pee.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Alonzo, yeah, well getting Pete Alonzo anytime soon? Yeah, So
- 13:03Speaker 2: look again, I think Bryce Harper would do whatever it
- 13:06Speaker 2: takes to win.
- 13:07Speaker 3: That's that's how I've always felt about him.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I think if I was Dave, I'd feel more comfortable
- 13:12Speaker 2: leaving at first base. He's done really well there and
- 13:15Speaker 2: has found a home. But yeah, if you could go
- 13:17Speaker 2: out and get that first baseman to fill that void, fine,
- 13:21Speaker 2: But again there's it's not like this market is filled
- 13:24Speaker 2: with available first.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Baseman, you know.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I mean, it's again not something that there's a lot
- 13:30Speaker 2: of inventory of. So I don't know where he gets it.
- 13:34Speaker 5: I want to talk a little about Raphael Devers a
- 13:37Speaker 5: little I call it a little saga that's going on
- 13:39Speaker 5: in San fran Buster Posey, you've been there before.
- 13:41Speaker 6: Man, You've you're a jack all trade.
- 13:43Speaker 5: You've been every in my opinion, I feel like you've
- 13:47Speaker 5: been in every position in baseball.
- 13:48Speaker 6: But you know, just see in your face.
- 13:50Speaker 5: My question is, how would you've handled that? Is it
- 13:53Speaker 5: your place to even figure that out? Is it the
- 13:55Speaker 5: manager's job? Like you know, he didn't want to come
- 13:58Speaker 5: off first base the other day, and now Pepe, his
- 14:00Speaker 5: ex coach, is saying stuff on Instagram or Twitter or
- 14:04Speaker 5: whatever or X whatever you call it. How would you
- 14:06Speaker 5: have handled that as a GM, knowing that you've been
- 14:08Speaker 5: there before.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I would have suspended him for a game without pay,
- 14:12Speaker 2: and I would have let the union file aggrievance against me,
- 14:15Speaker 2: and I would let the arbitrators decide. That's what I
- 14:18Speaker 2: would have done. What he did was disrespect the manager,
- 14:23Speaker 2: the bench coach, and his teammates and the organization from
- 14:27Speaker 2: top to bottom. And you can't let a player get
- 14:30Speaker 2: away with that. I'm sorry, you just can't. Not the
- 14:33Speaker 2: major league level, not the minor league level, that disrespect.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I couldn't believe that he did it. It was childish
- 14:39Speaker 2: on his part. I don't understand his thought process. Manager,
- 14:43Speaker 2: pinch runs for you, walk off the field, that's it.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And he even told the teammate that was Pincher running
- 14:48Speaker 2: for him, no go back, to go back to the dugout.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And then to make matters worse when he came into
- 14:52Speaker 2: the dugout and Jace Tinler, the bench coach, tried to
- 14:56Speaker 2: pat him on the back, he moved his back away
- 14:59Speaker 2: from him. It was just it's uncalled for. And you know, look,
- 15:02Speaker 2: I also think there's a layer of the manager and
- 15:06Speaker 2: the coaching staff doesn't have the respect of some of
- 15:08Speaker 2: the players in there. Devers obviously one of them. But
- 15:11Speaker 2: this isn't the first event with Devers, right, we saw
- 15:14Speaker 2: the way he treated Craig Breslow in Boston, which is
- 15:17Speaker 2: why Craig Breslow traded him. So this is a Devers
- 15:21Speaker 2: issue and problem. But I think to answer your question
- 15:24Speaker 2: as a GM, it's that situation was public. You have
- 15:29Speaker 2: to do something about it, and I think suspending one
- 15:32Speaker 2: game without pay, which is a lot of money for Devers,
- 15:35Speaker 2: would be the appropriate action.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And I thought the tweet from Alex Corre's former manager
- 15:41Speaker 1: was very telling. You do not see that often where
- 15:44Speaker 1: someone's trying to be like, see see what I was
- 15:46Speaker 1: putting up with when people are trying to say was
- 15:48Speaker 1: it the Red Sox fault? Was it Dever's fault with
- 15:50Speaker 1: that whole divorce? So my follow up for you too
- 15:52Speaker 1: pronged here. One is how does Buster Posey not have
- 15:55Speaker 1: a conversation with him as of yesterday afternoon when he
- 15:58Speaker 1: spoke to reporters, it's been days? And then how does
- 16:00Speaker 1: Devers go days without speaking to media and then basically
- 16:03Speaker 1: blaming the media.
- 16:05Speaker 7: For this whole situation.
- 16:07Speaker 1: It's like, dude, he's like saying, oh, well, I was
- 16:10Speaker 1: hurt and then we were just trying to clarify that
- 16:12Speaker 1: you've been playing baseball for twenty seven years. Whatever it is,
- 16:16Speaker 1: don't you know, if you're slower than someone else, it's
- 16:18Speaker 1: the ninth inning. In that situation, you're gonna get pinch
- 16:20Speaker 1: run for like its just the whole thing just smells.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's disgusting right now. Look, I'm not going to
- 16:26Speaker 2: tell Buster Posey how to do his job. You guys
- 16:29Speaker 2: asked me what I would have done when I was GM,
- 16:31Speaker 2: and I told you there are some presidents in GMS
- 16:34Speaker 2: that would not have gotten involved. They would have left
- 16:37Speaker 2: it up to the manager to handle it. However, he
- 16:40Speaker 2: wanted to handle it, and I'm guessing that's what Buster
- 16:43Speaker 2: Posey decided to do. He probably didn't want to go
- 16:46Speaker 2: around Tony Vytello. I just would have done it differently.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I would have done it with Tony Vitelo. I would
- 16:51Speaker 2: have brought him in to the office, suspend him for
- 16:54Speaker 2: a game, let him know the seriousness of it. What
- 16:57Speaker 2: bothered me about Dever's comment is obviously whatever conversation Tony
- 17:03Speaker 2: Voytello had with him, he obviously didn't make it strong
- 17:07Speaker 2: enough because for Rafael Devors to say, well, that's why
- 17:10Speaker 2: I don't talk to the media, because they blow it up.
- 17:12Speaker 2: No one's blowing up anything out of proportion, nobody. All
- 17:16Speaker 2: we're doing is reporting what we saw you do. That
- 17:19Speaker 2: is it, nothing more, nothing less, That's it. And you
- 17:24Speaker 2: know that kind of actions too. I mean it destroys
- 17:26Speaker 2: the organization when you have two hundred and twenty five
- 17:28Speaker 2: million left on a contract. I mean, who wants to
- 17:31Speaker 2: trade for Rafael Devers after what he did in Boston
- 17:34Speaker 2: and not what he's done in San Francisco. So yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 2: it's unacceptable. I don't think the manager handled it well.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I don't think the GM or the president or the
- 17:43Speaker 2: player handle it well.
- 17:43Speaker 3: The whole situation sucks.
- 17:46Speaker 1: You know why I are enjoying this minute because we're happy, Krats.
- 17:48Speaker 1: We're happy because we're wearing mac welded.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Yes, I'm six with five and nobody can give me
- 17:54Speaker 4: tall clothing, but mack Weldon allows me to have it.
- 17:58Speaker 4: So I don't really have to care about how I look,
- 18:01Speaker 4: and I still look good Because I don't put a
- 18:03Speaker 4: lot of time into what I do to pick out
- 18:05Speaker 4: my clothes.
- 18:06Speaker 8: Mac Weldon takes care of it for me.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Classic always in style, made from the world's most comfortable
- 18:11Speaker 1: performance materials. Summer gets sweaty. Don't let unnecessary sweat spots emerge.

- 18:31Speaker 1: heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool as you look.

- 18:35Speaker 1: Go to Mackweldon dot com and get twenty percent off
- 18:37Speaker 1: your first order of one hundred and twenty five bucks
- 18:39Speaker 1: or more with promo code foul. That's m A C
- 18:42Speaker 1: K W E L d O N dot com code foul.
- 18:47Speaker 6: All right.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Regarding your article, I'm reiterating what you said before. We said,
- 18:51Speaker 4: this is what you found out from the GMS, and
- 18:54Speaker 4: one of the things that GM said was Cleveland needs
- 18:57Speaker 4: a power back. I think everybody sees that is a
- 19:00Speaker 4: power bat available anywhere because you said it is contender
- 19:05Speaker 4: to contender. Is there a power bat that the Guardians
- 19:09Speaker 4: could possibly go and get as their need that would
- 19:12Speaker 4: then add to the team that they currently have, which
- 19:15Speaker 4: is now in second place as of today.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and you're going back to the same Philadelphia question
- 19:19Speaker 2: and you know, as of now, probably not right. If
- 19:22Speaker 2: Houston Astros were to drop out of it, do the
- 19:24Speaker 2: Phillies and Guardians come after Christian Walker as an example, Yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 2: that probably makes sense, But Houston's not going to trade
- 19:32Speaker 2: Christian Walker unless all of a sudden they take a dive.
- 19:36Speaker 2: You know, you're going to have to get a team
- 19:38Speaker 2: like the Angels that are if they were smart, they
- 19:41Speaker 2: would trade their assets and turn one asset into four
- 19:45Speaker 2: because they're never going to contend the way they operate,
- 19:48Speaker 2: it's never going to happen unless they try to take
- 19:51Speaker 2: individual assets in times of by three or four prospects.
- 19:55Speaker 2: But the Rockies don't have a lot to deal, the
- 19:58Speaker 2: Angels don't, the Giants. So then the question becomes, you know,
- 20:02Speaker 2: is there anybody know does Lewis Arise help Cleveland a
- 20:06Speaker 2: little bit? It doesn't really fit what they need, so
- 20:10Speaker 2: I'd probably say no. And then you have to wonder
- 20:13Speaker 2: we have to go contender to contender. You know, is
- 20:16Speaker 2: there a way we can fit? Should we circle back
- 20:19Speaker 2: to Arizona and can tell Marte as an example, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 2: maybe they move him now if they were to drop
- 20:25Speaker 2: out of it. But again, every team is within seven
- 20:29Speaker 2: games of the playoffs except two right now, and so yeah,
- 20:31Speaker 2: it's difficult now for Cleveland, though keep in mind, you
- 20:35Speaker 2: know they're playing without Jose Ramirez, Ainhal Martinez and Chase
- 20:38Speaker 2: the latter. They need those three guys back. That was
- 20:41Speaker 2: their three best hitters when they all went down. Manzardo's
- 20:44Speaker 2: starting to hit, which is positive as well. But yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 2: to answer your question right now, there's not a lot
- 20:49Speaker 2: of bats that are available, and that's why everyone keeps
- 20:53Speaker 2: saying that's the hardest thing to get right now.
- 20:55Speaker 4: So Cleveland is essentially in the same spot that you
- 20:59Speaker 4: wrote about that the Tigers are in just to get healthy,
- 21:02Speaker 4: is answer. Did that answer surprise you from the league
- 21:06Speaker 4: in the sense that the league thinks this is a
- 21:08Speaker 4: good team and all they need to do is just
- 21:10Speaker 4: get healthy, or do you feel like it was just
- 21:12Speaker 4: kind of a I don't think they really have a
- 21:15Speaker 4: need they need to trade.
- 21:17Speaker 3: So let me go through it.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Because there's only three teams that kind of fit that
- 21:21Speaker 2: mob that said healthy, right, so Los Angeles Dodgers were
- 21:24Speaker 2: one of them. And I love the answer because that
- 21:27Speaker 2: is the truth.
- 21:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 21:28Speaker 2: If Will Smith goes down, no worries I have Dalton rushing.
- 21:30Speaker 2: If glassnow goes on the DL with with a two
- 21:34Speaker 2: seven six era, I'll have Robleski put up the same era, right,
- 21:38Speaker 2: or I'll go get Eric Lauer if I have a need.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So the Dodgers literally just need to be healthy now.
- 21:44Speaker 2: When Detroit says it, they said it in a kind
- 21:46Speaker 2: of a different fashion. They said it like, I want
- 21:49Speaker 2: to see what this team can do for the next
- 21:51Speaker 2: six weeks. I want to get this team healthy and
- 21:54Speaker 2: see if we can get back in the race, and
- 21:56Speaker 2: then we'll make the decision. So it wasn't saying we
- 21:59Speaker 2: don't have you know, we're not going to have a
- 22:02Speaker 2: need when we get to the trade deadline. It was,
- 22:04Speaker 2: you know, my question was what is your biggest need today?
- 22:07Speaker 2: That's how I worded it, And the Tiger's answer was
- 22:10Speaker 2: more like, you know, let me get Scooba back pitching
- 22:12Speaker 2: every fifth day, let me get the bullpen healthy, let
- 22:16Speaker 2: me get this team back to where it is, and
- 22:18Speaker 2: then a month from now, I'll know what we have
- 22:22Speaker 2: to do, what we may need or if we do sell.
- 22:25Speaker 2: So that was kind of how they responded to that.
- 22:28Speaker 2: A team like Seattle, you know, I want to get
- 22:30Speaker 2: healthy because like, Okay, yeah, they need another reliever, but
- 22:34Speaker 2: we have Kate Anderson, We have Ryan Sloan in our
- 22:37Speaker 2: system ready to go whenever we need that. Now, I
- 22:40Speaker 2: would argue that Seattle could use one more bat to
- 22:42Speaker 2: kind of put with Raleigh and Roe, blest A, DH
- 22:45Speaker 2: and right field. But they didn't see. They don't see
- 22:47Speaker 2: it that way right now. That may change in a month,
- 22:50Speaker 2: you know, we'll have to wait and see. But again,
- 22:52Speaker 2: when I wrote this article, I had talked to every
- 22:55Speaker 2: front office within twenty four hours of that article posting.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You mentioned Derek Klawer and we talked about a little
- 23:01Speaker 4: bit yesterday. I'm perplexed at how the Dodgers were the
- 23:06Speaker 4: only team that said, you know what, I think Eric
- 23:10Speaker 4: Lawer could give us some value and he's starting in
- 23:12Speaker 4: this rotation.
- 23:13Speaker 8: How is a GM does that.
- 23:16Speaker 4: I don't want to say fall through the cracks, but
- 23:18Speaker 4: I guess I'm saying fall through the cracks for everybody else.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean especially teams like the Chicago White Sox,
- 23:26Speaker 2: the Saint Louis Cardinals, the San Diego Padres. You know,
- 23:29Speaker 2: there are teams the Washington Nationals. I mean, there are
- 23:32Speaker 2: teams that really stood out to me. And when the
- 23:34Speaker 2: Dodgers signed them, I just kind of laughed, like, there
- 23:37Speaker 2: goes Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes again. I even talked
- 23:41Speaker 2: to a couple of friends recommending Lower. You know, the
- 23:45Speaker 2: problem sometimes in some of the front offices right now
- 23:48Speaker 2: is that their artificial intelligence or their analytics or algorithms
- 23:53Speaker 2: don't like pitchers that throw ninety as the top end
- 23:57Speaker 2: of their.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Fastball for whatever reason.
- 24:00Speaker 2: But Lower is one of those guys that you know,
- 24:02Speaker 2: we've seen success with him. He's left handed, he fits in.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You put him in a rotation between a couple guys
- 24:09Speaker 2: that throw really hard, and you know it's screws hitters up.
- 24:13Speaker 3: So yeah, I could.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Not believe that when Lower became a bit. First of all,
- 24:17Speaker 2: I couldn't believe Toronto gave up on I know he
- 24:19Speaker 2: had a slow start, but I was surprised that they
- 24:22Speaker 2: gave up on him because you never get enough pitching.
- 24:25Speaker 2: But then for the Dodgers to beat the other twenty
- 24:28Speaker 2: eight teams to get him like that just can't happen.
- 24:31Speaker 3: But it did.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Wait four boxes for a moment. Then I'll ask the
- 24:35Speaker 1: last question. I just want to get Kratz's reaction, because
- 24:38Speaker 1: he texted me something while you were talking, JB. Go
- 24:40Speaker 1: ahead say it, Kratz, It's worth it.
- 24:42Speaker 4: But then the Mets start senga, who's throwing ninety nine?
- 24:45Speaker 4: So I guess the AI algorithm says, oh, well, ninety
- 24:49Speaker 4: nine is so much.
- 24:50Speaker 8: Better than what my eye says.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Is lower who helped the Blue Jays make it to
- 24:56Speaker 4: the playoffs last year? Gym Like, I'm so anyway, sorry,
- 25:00Speaker 4: I get I get infuriated when there's obvious things in
- 25:02Speaker 4: front of me.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I do too, And you know, to me, I just
- 25:06Speaker 2: want outs and I want to win, yes, And I
- 25:09Speaker 2: don't care how you get me the outs or how
- 25:11Speaker 2: you get me the wins.
- 25:13Speaker 3: But create creativity is so.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Important and different looks in different shapes, sizes, velocities. I
- 25:20Speaker 2: mean I had closers back in my day that one
- 25:24Speaker 2: roll age relieves that didn't have good stuff, Like Jeff
- 25:27Speaker 2: Brantley had an eighty nine min hour fastball and he
- 25:30Speaker 2: would throw by people the top of the strike zoner
- 25:33Speaker 2: right down the middle of the plate like Danny Graves
- 25:36Speaker 2: would impact closer and.
- 25:37Speaker 3: It was a sinker. Like you know it's outs. I
- 25:41Speaker 3: want outs.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Look, we all know what the stuff is. We all
- 25:44Speaker 2: know what the velo is the spin rates, the shapes,
- 25:47Speaker 2: the sizes, the breaks. We measure everything.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I get it.
- 25:51Speaker 2: What I like to do is I like to see
- 25:52Speaker 2: the guys that get outs, and then we can go
- 25:54Speaker 2: back and look at how they're getting the outs. But
- 25:56Speaker 2: let's get the outs, let's get early count outs, let's
- 26:00Speaker 2: mis bats, let's let's get you know, that's what you
- 26:03Speaker 2: need to do. And whether it's lower or senga, you know,
- 26:07Speaker 2: sometimes stuff is the best way to go. But at
- 26:09Speaker 2: the end of the day, the last team that wins
- 26:12Speaker 2: is the one that gave up the less amount of runs.
- 26:14Speaker 8: Obviously, isn't that where the value is?
- 26:16Speaker 4: Right now, Jim, if you were to start an organ
- 26:19Speaker 4: not start an organization, but take over an organization and say,
- 26:22Speaker 4: you know what ownership says, we want to win, I say,
- 26:25Speaker 4: I want to win all the things that you're preaching.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Isn't that where major value is because everybody else is
- 26:31Speaker 4: just the same sheep, just just going in the same direction.
- 26:35Speaker 4: And then a team like the Dodgers gets get you know,
- 26:38Speaker 4: all this money, but then they make a move like this.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Isn't that the things that separate you from the best
- 26:44Speaker 4: of the best, Because that's what you want to be.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think when you it's it's not just
- 26:50Speaker 2: the Dodgers. You know, people look at the Dodgers, they
- 26:52Speaker 2: don't really understand how they build teams that a lot
- 26:55Speaker 2: of people don't understand the value of Alex call or
- 26:59Speaker 2: or the value of an Eric Lauer.
- 27:01Speaker 3: The Dodgers really get it.
- 27:03Speaker 2: They understand baseball makeup, character, baseball IQ. They understand what
- 27:09Speaker 2: player's best assets are and what role they can be
- 27:12Speaker 2: used to win games. Eric Neander a Tampa Bay is
- 27:16Speaker 2: a genius. Peter Bendix comes from that tree, the freedman
- 27:19Speaker 2: Neander now Bendicks tree.
- 27:21Speaker 3: They get it. I mean, there's a reason why.
- 27:23Speaker 2: The Marlins are the winningest team in baseball in the
- 27:27Speaker 2: month of June. Peter Bendix knows exactly what he's doing.
- 27:31Speaker 2: They understand the human element. That's not in the scouting report,
- 27:35Speaker 2: it's not in the metrics, it's not in the analytics.
- 27:39Speaker 2: And they understand what a player can bring to the table,
- 27:43Speaker 2: what the assets are, what the weaknesses are. They try
- 27:46Speaker 2: to avoid players' weaknesses and just make sure they harness
- 27:51Speaker 2: the straints and put them in the right position and
- 27:53Speaker 2: the right role to succeed and That's why a lot
- 27:57Speaker 2: of small market teams that have great leaders can I mean,
- 28:00Speaker 2: look at heinm. Bloom's influence on Saint Louis or Paul
- 28:04Speaker 2: Deboni's influence on Washington, and look at all the young
- 28:08Speaker 2: players that are developing better that they they provide a better,
- 28:12Speaker 2: more detailed plan for each of their players than they
- 28:16Speaker 2: had in the previous administrations.
- 28:18Speaker 3: And it shows up krats.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Mint Mobile plans still just fifteen bucks a month, and.
- 28:27Speaker 8: You're getting a ton from that fifteen dollars.
- 28:30Speaker 1: That's right, And we've talked about this for a while.

- 29:19Speaker 1: for details. Yeah, Roblesk, he's a good example too. He's
- 29:23Speaker 1: not striking out the world with his stuff. Last one
- 29:26Speaker 1: for you, JB, because we didn't have you on since
- 29:28Speaker 1: this happened. What's your take on the MLB proposal to
- 29:32Speaker 1: cut down rounds of the draft, not allow high schoolers
- 29:34Speaker 1: to enter international draft, the whole deal? Your take and
- 29:39Speaker 1: also what the industry thinks about something like this, and
- 29:43Speaker 1: even like why they would throw all that out there
- 29:45Speaker 1: because obviously some people are like, wait, you're cutting a
- 29:48Speaker 1: lot here.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Yeah, isn't it a great idea?
- 29:52Speaker 2: Like if I if I was an owner of a
- 29:53Speaker 2: team and I thought, instead of me having to spend
- 29:56Speaker 2: the money to develop players in the minor leagues, I'll
- 29:58Speaker 2: just had the colleges do it dead and they'll be
- 30:01Speaker 2: on their dime and not my dime because I get
- 30:03Speaker 2: no assets I get no revenue from the minor league games,
- 30:07Speaker 2: right unless I own the minor league team, I don't
- 30:09Speaker 2: get any money. I just have an expenditure. Why don't
- 30:12Speaker 2: I What we're witnessing the last two or three years
- 30:15Speaker 2: is the colleges are developing players better or at least
- 30:18Speaker 2: as good as the major league teams are.
- 30:21Speaker 3: That's just clear.
- 30:22Speaker 2: When these guys like Jack cagleone and Travis Bozana and
- 30:24Speaker 2: these guys get to the big leagues as quick as
- 30:26Speaker 2: they do, the development has been great. Now the colleges
- 30:30Speaker 2: are getting TV money, radio money, there's a lot of
- 30:33Speaker 2: money coming in. They're getting money from NIL. So the
- 30:38Speaker 2: players are getting paid, the colleges are getting paid. There's
- 30:42Speaker 2: all kinds of money there, So why don't they pay
- 30:45Speaker 2: for it? And we'll cut down the number of minor
- 30:48Speaker 2: league teams we have, and we'll have guys, we'll use
- 30:51Speaker 2: the model of the NFL, and we'll have guys go
- 30:54Speaker 2: from college basically for a year or two and the
- 30:57Speaker 2: miners if that, and then right to the big leagues.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Let someone else pay for it. So I totally understand
- 31:03Speaker 2: what the teams are trying to do there in terms of,
- 31:06Speaker 2: you know, taking the draft from twenty to twelve. I'm
- 31:08Speaker 2: actually okay with that if if I were a player,
- 31:13Speaker 2: you know, if I don't go in the first twelve
- 31:15Speaker 2: rounds and I get to pick where I play and
- 31:17Speaker 2: have that choice instead of having to be drafted by
- 31:21Speaker 2: the Angels or the Pirates or you know, a small
- 31:24Speaker 2: market team. If I wanted to be a Yankeer Dodger
- 31:26Speaker 2: and they wanted me after the twelfth round, I get
- 31:28Speaker 2: to pick where I go. I'm not sure that isn't
- 31:31Speaker 2: a good thing for some of the players. And as
- 31:33Speaker 2: far as the teams go, you know, most of the
- 31:36Speaker 2: guys that get to the big leagues are being drafted
- 31:37Speaker 2: in the first twelve rounds. I mean, you know, Scouty's
- 31:40Speaker 2: gotten really more precise than it ever has been before.
- 31:44Speaker 2: So you know, I'm actually, I'm actually fine with the
- 31:47Speaker 2: proposal from the from the team perspective.
- 31:54Speaker 8: You can push back.
- 31:56Speaker 3: You can push back here.
- 31:58Speaker 4: My pushback is you need to subscribe to foul territory
- 32:01Speaker 4: because I said exactly what the teams are doing. Now,
- 32:04Speaker 4: all of a sudden, you get free agents who are
- 32:05Speaker 4: not ever twenty six, they're always twenty eight to twenty nine,
- 32:10Speaker 4: and you don't have to pay that extra price too.
- 32:12Speaker 4: That's the long play for the for major League Baseball.
- 32:15Speaker 4: In my opinion, Oh, there's no doubt.
- 32:18Speaker 2: I mean, you're taking a teenager away from getting to
- 32:22Speaker 2: the big leagues. I mean, to me, it's a lot
- 32:24Speaker 2: of fun when a Bryce Harper or a Juan Soto
- 32:27Speaker 2: makes it to the big leagues as a teenager. That's
- 32:30Speaker 2: a really big deal, and you're taking it away. Look,
- 32:33Speaker 2: this is a club proposal, this is an agreement by
- 32:36Speaker 2: the players. I mean, if I'm on the player side,
- 32:38Speaker 2: I want nothing to do with this, nothing to do
- 32:41Speaker 2: with this. But from an owner's perspective, I mean they're
- 32:44Speaker 2: running a business. I understand that proposal. I would love
- 32:48Speaker 2: to have the colleges pay to develop my players. Saves
- 32:52Speaker 2: me a lot of money.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, And my pushback, JB, is that none of that
- 32:57Speaker 1: is going to happen high schoolers.
- 32:58Speaker 7: You're still going to enter their not going to cut
- 33:00Speaker 7: down round all of that.
- 33:02Speaker 1: The only thing that I think we should actually be
- 33:03Speaker 1: paying attention to is something that was close to getting
- 33:05Speaker 1: done LASTCO round, which is the International Draft. I'm fine
- 33:08Speaker 1: with that. I can't say I'm the expert on that topic.
- 33:11Speaker 1: The only thing that bothered me, That led me to
- 33:12Speaker 1: a rant, and I don't do it often here, but
- 33:15Speaker 1: was the stipulations they came out with, how they can
- 33:18Speaker 1: help to prevent the crime that goes on in some
- 33:20Speaker 1: of the Latin American countries with these ten eleven year
- 33:23Speaker 1: olds and their trainers right them working with the government,
- 33:27Speaker 1: they could be doing that now and for the past
- 33:29Speaker 1: long time, you know. To me, it just sounded like, hey,
- 33:33Speaker 1: we get the draft, we get what we want. Now
- 33:34Speaker 1: will help the situation down there. And I just felt
- 33:37Speaker 1: like there were two different cases. That's actually the biggest
- 33:40Speaker 1: thing I took out of this was wait, now we
- 33:41Speaker 1: have ideas to fix this, but we didn't for twenty years.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 2: No, I totally get your point there, Scott, agree with it.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I think my problem with it is, Okay, so if
- 33:50Speaker 2: you're an international player, you can go to the big
- 33:54Speaker 2: leagues at age eighteen, but if you go if you
- 33:57Speaker 2: live in the United States, you can't go until you're twenty.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I don't get that. I also have never believed that
- 34:03Speaker 2: two drafts is the way to go. I've always believed
- 34:05Speaker 2: it's a worldwide draft.
- 34:07Speaker 3: That's the way we.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Should be going. I think there should be one amateur
- 34:10Speaker 2: draft that takes place that includes everybody. Put everybody on
- 34:15Speaker 2: the same playing field. I think that's more fair. It
- 34:19Speaker 2: just is you're gonna have certain slotting. But what if
- 34:23Speaker 2: the player in the third round drafted by the Blue
- 34:28Speaker 2: Jays in the American amateur Draft is a much better
- 34:33Speaker 2: player than the player that's in the third round and
- 34:36Speaker 2: the international draft in the same spot, and they're both
- 34:39Speaker 2: automatically going to get the same money. Like, that's not
- 34:42Speaker 2: really fair in my opinion. So my preference would be
- 34:45Speaker 2: not just an international draft, one draft, worldwide draft. Put
- 34:49Speaker 2: everybody in the same pool with the same age, whatever
- 34:53Speaker 2: the age restriction is going to be, if it's seventeen
- 34:56Speaker 2: or eighteen, whatever it's going to be, but treat everybody
- 34:58Speaker 2: the same regardless of where they're one.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think that's a good topic in the
- 35:02Speaker 1: off season to go over is the whole draft situation,
- 35:05Speaker 1: because also, just for me the fan perspective, two drafts
- 35:08Speaker 1: gets confusing.
- 35:09Speaker 7: I just want one like NBA.
- 35:11Speaker 1: There's guys you've never heard of from Europe, but it
- 35:13Speaker 1: just makes more sense to have it all tied together.
- 35:15Speaker 7: So I think there's great points there. JB.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Good stuff. Thanks for the extended time. We had a
- 35:18Speaker 1: lot to get to We'll catch you soon. Sounds good, guys,
- 35:22Speaker 1: Thank you. That's ja Jim Boden. JB is also running
