- 0:01Speaker 1: Talk to nicely.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It happened as the bell rang, finally signaling a long-awaited recess. But,
- 0:11Speaker 2: as we got to our feet, another message played over
- 0:13Speaker 2: the speaker system.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Students of Recall Hall, please remain seated. The school has
- 0:19Speaker 1: been put on lockdown. No one is allowed to leave
- 0:22Speaker 1: under any circumstances.
- 0:23Speaker 2: We all groaned in annoyance, hardly a soul taking the
- 0:27Speaker 2: message seriously. Whatever drill we assumed the school was putting
- 0:31Speaker 2: us through, none of us were having it. Only then
- 0:34Speaker 2: did I glance outside to see three armored military vehicles
- 0:38Speaker 2: approaching the school at high speeds. Within a minute, dozens
- 0:42Speaker 2: of soldiers poured out with heavy equipment and metal plates,
- 0:46Speaker 2: running up to our windows. One by one, they started
- 0:50Speaker 2: boarding them up, drilling the plates in front of our windows,
- 0:53Speaker 2: making any thought of escape impossible.
- 0:56Speaker 1: What's happening?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Leo asked from the back of the class. The teacher
- 1:00Speaker 2: didn't answer. He looked just as confused as the rest
- 1:04Speaker 2: of us. He went to his desk and pulled out
- 1:06Speaker 2: a phone, calling the principal, but he didn't answer. We're
- 1:11Speaker 2: just going to stay here, alright? Let them deal with
- 1:13Speaker 2: the situation, then we can leave. I dug my mobile
- 1:17Speaker 2: phone out from my bag, only to find that I didn't.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Have any signal.
- 1:21Speaker 2: While the school always had crappy service, I'd never been
- 1:24Speaker 2: left without the possibility to call out. Whatever the soldiers
- 1:27Speaker 2: had done, it had blocked off our only means of
- 1:30Speaker 2: contacting the outside world. I can't call anyone, I said,
- 1:34Speaker 2: holding up my phone. The other students, even Mr. Morgans,
- 1:38Speaker 2: pulled out their phones, each of them with the same result.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Everybody keep calm. It'll be all right, Mr.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Morgan said unconvincingly.
- 1:46Speaker 2: We just need to wait here for them to help.
- 1:49Speaker 2: His words were interrupted by frantic screaming coming from the
- 1:52Speaker 2: hallway and heavy footsteps running just outside the door. We
- 1:56Speaker 2: all sat in silence, listening intently to the commotion.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Going on outside.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Then, one by one, the screams were silenced, replaced by
- 2:06Speaker 2: distant gurgles. By then, some of my classmates had started crying,
- 2:12Speaker 2: while others sat frozen in fear. Fuck this shit, I'm leaving,
- 2:16Speaker 2: one of the students said. It was Jack, the class
- 2:20Speaker 2: has had. He'd always been a daredevil, claiming nothing could
- 2:24Speaker 2: scare him. But even for him, This was ridiculous beyond belief.
- 2:28Speaker 2: He ran for the door, pulled it open, and started
- 2:31Speaker 2: running down the hall. Mr. Morgans was too slow to
- 2:34Speaker 2: stop him. He just rushed over to pull the door closed.
- 2:38Speaker 2: We all sat back, ready for another bout of screams,
- 2:41Speaker 2: but they never came. By all means, it seemed like
- 2:45Speaker 2: Jack had made it to safety. But how he'd possibly
- 2:48Speaker 2: leave the school, we didn't know.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He made it? Leo called from the back.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It sounds like he's fine.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Another one chimed in.
- 2:57Speaker 2: As the news of his escape hit us, more of
- 2:59Speaker 2: the students started feeling confident we could get out with him.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Whatever the military had blocked the school for, it wasn't
- 3:06Speaker 2: to keep us safe, so staying in one place might
- 3:08Speaker 2: end up getting us all killed.
- 3:10Speaker 1: While Mr.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Morgans demanded we stay back, he couldn't fight us all,
- 3:14Speaker 2: so a group consisting of four students, including myself, decided
- 3:18Speaker 2: to leave. Leo took the lead, sticking his head outside
- 3:21Speaker 2: the door and signaling that it was all clear. We
- 3:25Speaker 2: ducked into the hallway in silence, making sure it was empty.
- 3:28Speaker 2: The place was eerily quiet, a stark contrast to both
- 3:32Speaker 2: its usual self and the screaming we'd heard moments earlier.
- 3:36Speaker 2: We unanimously decided to head in the opposite direction of
- 3:39Speaker 2: the sound, which also went towards the main exit. While
- 3:42Speaker 2: we all figured the main exit was blocked, we were
- 3:45Speaker 2: hoping one of the ventilation shafts had been forgotten, and
- 3:48Speaker 2: the only vent entrance we knew about was situated near
- 3:51Speaker 2: the main doors. If Jack had made it outside, that
- 3:55Speaker 2: would be the only way. As we walked down the hall,
- 3:58Speaker 2: the light suddenly went out. It appeared that the electricity
- 4:02Speaker 2: had been cut because even the ventilation system fell silent,
- 4:06Speaker 2: meaning the whole building had lost power. The only light
- 4:09Speaker 2: we had then came from our mobile phones, but it
- 4:12Speaker 2: hardly provided any comfort. Then, I slipped and hit my
- 4:16Speaker 2: head on the ground. It hurt, and as I went
- 4:19Speaker 2: to rub the back of my head, it felt wet.
- 4:22Speaker 2: At first, I was worried I might have cracked my
- 4:24Speaker 2: head open, but then I realized that my entire back
- 4:27Speaker 2: was wet. Leo shined his flashlight at my back, immediately
- 4:31Speaker 2: gasped as he realized I was covered in blood. The
- 4:35Speaker 2: only issue was, it didn't belong to me. The entire
- 4:38Speaker 2: hallway was covered in blood. The floor, the walls, and
- 4:42Speaker 2: the ceiling. Maybe we should turn back, Lee said. No,
- 4:46Speaker 2: we need to get out, Tyler argued back. We kept going,
- 4:50Speaker 2: slowly moving forward in silence. Until we finally saw the exit.
- 4:54Speaker 2: As suspected, the doors had been sealed shut by the
- 4:57Speaker 2: same metal plates. But next to the door stood a
- 5:01Speaker 2: ladder leading up to the vent. Probably the one Jack
- 5:04Speaker 2: had used to escape. Tyler rushed to the front and
- 5:07Speaker 2: started ascending the ladder. As he got to the vent,
- 5:10Speaker 2: he froze in place.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Jack?
- 5:13Speaker 1: He said quietly. He's in there? I asked. Yeah. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: he's not moving.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Then Tyler started tugging on Jack's legs. and tumbled back
- 5:23Speaker 2: as he pulled half his body out of the vent,
- 5:25Speaker 2: falling onto the ground and knocking himself out for a moment.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Jack was dead, which meant that the monster had either
- 5:32Speaker 2: climbed inside the vents, or there were several of them.
- 5:37Speaker 2: We should go back to the classroom and wait for help,
- 5:40Speaker 2: Elise suggested as she stared at what was left of Jack.
- 5:43Speaker 2: None of us could disagree, so we got Tyler back
- 5:46Speaker 2: on his feet and started quietly walking back. praying not
- 5:50Speaker 2: to garner the attention of whatever monstrosity had been unleashed
- 5:53Speaker 2: within our school. When we finally got back, we found
- 5:58Speaker 2: the door to our classroom broken and smashed to pieces.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We stood frozen outside until I finally got the guts
- 6:06Speaker 2: to check inside, holding the other back to protect them
- 6:10Speaker 2: from what I knew was coming. The entire room was
- 6:13Speaker 2: smeared with blood, with chunks of flesh lying on the floor.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Every single person in the classroom had been killed. torn
- 6:20Speaker 2: to shreds by an unknown entity. Had we not left
- 6:23Speaker 2: to look for a way out, we'd all be dead too.
- 6:27Speaker 1: What are we going to do? Elise asked. I don't know.
- 6:31Speaker 2: We just have to keep looking for a way out.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We can't stay here. We turned to walk in the
- 6:36Speaker 2: opposite direction, hoping to find shelter, or maybe even an
- 6:40Speaker 2: escape through the basement. But as we turned to run,
- 6:44Speaker 2: we heard a bizarre sound shatter the silence around us.
- 6:48Speaker 1: What was that? Tyler asked with a shaky voice. It
- 6:52Speaker 1: was the thing. It has to be.
- 6:55Speaker 2: The darkness felt more overwhelming than ever, but we had
- 6:58Speaker 2: to keep going. We ran through the halls, occasionally coming
- 7:02Speaker 2: across streaks of blood. As we turned a corner, we
- 7:06Speaker 2: heard Elise scream for her life.
- 7:08Speaker 3: No! Help me!
- 7:10Speaker 2: She'd been snatched by a mangled appendage that wrapped itself
- 7:13Speaker 2: around her leg. It stretched endlessly far into the darkness.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Belonging to a being that was too far away to see.
- 7:21Speaker 2: We tried to grab onto her, but she was slipping
- 7:23Speaker 2: away too fast. We could hear the bone within her
- 7:26Speaker 2: leg get crushed to pieces as she slipped away from
- 7:28Speaker 2: our grasp.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Elise!
- 7:31Speaker 2: Tyler yelled as he started to run after her. Leo
- 7:34Speaker 2: tried to follow, but I pulled him back.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Don't do it. We can't help her. Tyler! Leo yelled,
- 7:41Speaker 1: hoping to bring her back to us. It was too late.
- 7:46Speaker 1: He too got.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Entangled in the many dark appendages, his body being crushed
- 7:50Speaker 2: almost instantly under the pressure. They were dead, and there
- 7:54Speaker 2: was nothing me and Leo could do about it. So
- 7:57Speaker 2: we kept running, turning around corners blindly in an aimless
- 8:01Speaker 2: attempt at escape. We'd gotten lost in the vast hallways
- 8:04Speaker 2: of the school, and there were no obvious ways out.
- 8:08Speaker 2: At least, we came to another set of doors that
- 8:11Speaker 2: led out into freedom. But they were locked, Defeated, I
- 8:15Speaker 2: just collapsed onto the ground. But Leo wasn't ready to
- 8:19Speaker 2: give up. He kept hammering on the boarded-up windows, and
- 8:22Speaker 2: in the distance, we could hear the monster come closer.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Within minutes, he'd be dead. Then, as he hammered for
- 8:30Speaker 2: the last time, the metal panel suddenly vanished, letting light
- 8:34Speaker 2: in for the first time. The doors blew open, and
- 8:37Speaker 2: a team of heavily armed soldiers came running into the building.
- 8:40Speaker 2: They threw something I could only describe as military-grade Molotovs
- 8:44Speaker 2: before one of them turned to us. Is there anyone
- 8:47Speaker 2: else left? No, they're all dead, I stuttered. With that,
- 8:53Speaker 2: they pulled us out and sealed the doors back up.
- 8:55Speaker 2: That was pretty much it. They loaded us into a
- 8:58Speaker 2: vehicle and drove us to an isolated field hospital set
- 9:02Speaker 2: up inside some warehouse. Once they'd confirmed we didn't carry
- 9:06Speaker 2: any strange infections, we were put through a series of interviews.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But nothing came of it.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Because the school was gone the next day, burned to
- 9:15Speaker 2: the ground, and removed as if it never existed. And
- 9:19Speaker 2: the hundreds of deaths were claimed to be caused by
- 9:21Speaker 2: a crazy fire. All of it got brushed under the rug.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But I can't hide the truth anymore. Even if they
- 9:28Speaker 2: kill me, I need to get this story out. People
- 9:31Speaker 2: deserve to know. Hey you, would you like to get

- 9:50Speaker 2: will be my last transmission. If you're hearing this, please
- 9:52Speaker 2: know that I did my best to save you all.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I've run out of food, and there's just no cure
- 9:55Speaker 2: to this plague. When I die, my body will be
- 9:56Speaker 2: located at... Please burn the place to the ground. and
- 10:18Speaker 2: pour concrete atop of the remains. There's no solution. Please,
- 10:23Speaker 2: do not open the door. I'm so sorry for what
- 10:26Speaker 2: we have created, but as long as I die inside
- 10:29Speaker 2: this building, it means you all get to live. In
- 10:32Speaker 2: the beginning of 2012, I joined a group called Sano Project,
- 10:36Speaker 2: a bunch of scientists funded by an unknown prospector. Our
- 10:40Speaker 2: goal was simple and concept only, to produce a vaccine
- 10:44Speaker 2: that would immunize people via aerosol droplets, We'd been given
- 10:48Speaker 2: a heap of different substances and pathogens to achieve the
- 10:51Speaker 2: desired effect. We'd be using mice for the experiment, but
- 10:55Speaker 2: due to the high risk of accidental contagion, we were
- 10:58Speaker 2: put into lockdown for the duration of the experiment, which
- 11:01Speaker 2: was only supposed to last six months. Food and supplies
- 11:05Speaker 2: would be delivered using an isolated lift, taking everything we
- 11:08Speaker 2: needed underground into an airlock. When we started, there were
- 11:12Speaker 2: six of us, with Professor Jenkins in the lead. He
- 11:15Speaker 2: was an old, and equally odd fellow, but he was
- 11:18Speaker 2: the top in his field. There was no one more
- 11:21Speaker 2: suited for the job, and the five of us that
- 11:23Speaker 2: worked under him greatly admired the man. Still, outside of
- 11:27Speaker 2: work hours, he confined himself to his room with lab
- 11:30Speaker 2: reports and an endless pile of books about exotic infectology. Honestly,
- 11:35Speaker 2: as much as I enjoyed working under such a great mind,
- 11:38Speaker 2: he scared me at times. He seemed overly enthusiastic about
- 11:42Speaker 2: the experiment part, and less so about saving lives. For
- 11:46Speaker 2: the first five months, work went on as normal. We
- 11:49Speaker 2: combined different pathogens and tried to create harmless fragments from
- 11:52Speaker 2: their protein capsule, aerosolizing them as a vaccine, hoping the
- 11:56Speaker 2: mice's bodies would absorb them. It was an endless stream
- 11:59Speaker 2: of disappointment, as the poor animals kept dying. Then, at
- 12:05Speaker 2: the end of the six-month contract, Professor Jenkins created something
- 12:09Speaker 2: new entirely. While it wasn't anything near what we wished,
- 12:13Speaker 2: he'd managed to invent something no one thought possible. He'd
- 12:16Speaker 2: mixed a strain of highly infectious virus with a bacteria.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It was a miracle with limitless harmful potential. And it
- 12:24Speaker 2: terrified us. Still, his explanation somewhat lulled half the staff
- 12:29Speaker 2: into a false sense of security. His idea was that
- 12:32Speaker 2: the right mix of pathogens, he could invent a virus
- 12:35Speaker 2: that integrated itself into the human genome, which then started
- 12:39Speaker 2: producing a new type of defense mechanism entirely, something separate
- 12:43Speaker 2: to the immune system. To us, it sounded like a
- 12:46Speaker 2: ludicrous fever dream, but the higher-ups were convinced by his ramble,
- 12:50Speaker 2: basically forcing us to stay under lockdown for another six
- 12:53Speaker 2: months as we worked on Professor Jenkins' new personal pet project.
- 12:57Speaker 2: We followed orders, making countless hybrid pathogens, all in the
- 13:01Speaker 2: hopes that it might lead to a cure for all infections.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I repeatedly voiced my concerns, but the rest were too
- 13:07Speaker 2: afraid of reprisals to take my side. Then, halfway into
- 13:12Speaker 2: the second term, The professor called me into his office.
- 13:15Speaker 2: He looked unbelievably tired, as if he'd been awake for days.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I hadn't seen him much lately, as he'd always confined
- 13:22Speaker 2: himself to his office while he did grunt work. I've
- 13:25Speaker 2: finally done it, Carl, he said ecstatically.
- 13:29Speaker 1: A vaccine?
- 13:30Speaker 2: But we haven't even started the aerosolized trials yet?
- 13:33Speaker 1: I asked, confused. He chuckled. We won't need trials. Not
- 13:39Speaker 1: for this. What are you talking about?
- 13:42Speaker 2: I thought you would get it, Carl. Have you even
- 13:45Speaker 2: looked around the world lately? We create cures for everything
- 13:48Speaker 2: from basic infections to cancer and genetic mutations. We keep
- 13:53Speaker 2: people alive decades past their supposed lifespan.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And for what?
- 13:57Speaker 2: To finally destroy the planet? To let our sheer numbers
- 13:59Speaker 2: be the inevitable downfall of mankind? He went to the door,
- 14:05Speaker 2: locking it before removing the key. I felt adrenaline surge
- 14:09Speaker 2: through my body. And though I knew something horrible would
- 14:12Speaker 2: come next, I hadn't the faintest clue what. I've created
- 14:17Speaker 2: something that will save us all, but I need someone
- 14:19Speaker 2: to start it all.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Someone younger, healthier than myself.
- 14:24Speaker 2: With that, he plunged a syringe into my neck before
- 14:26Speaker 2: I could react. I pulled it out as fast as
- 14:28Speaker 2: I could, but whatever its contents, it had been injected
- 14:31Speaker 2: into my bloodstream. What the hell? I started to say
- 14:35Speaker 2: before the world.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Went black before me.
- 14:38Speaker 2: As I was left unconscious, I couldn't tell whether I
- 14:41Speaker 2: had died or if I was just sleeping. It all
- 14:44Speaker 2: felt so quiet around me, but also warm.
- 14:47Speaker 1: It was an odd.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Sensation, almost as if pressure was building up within me,
- 14:52Speaker 2: getting ready to explode. Then, as if no time had
- 14:56Speaker 2: passed at all, I awoke once more, lying on the
- 15:00Speaker 2: cold floor of Professor Jenkins' floor. He was sitting behind
- 15:03Speaker 2: his desk with labored breathing. Ah, you're finally awake. That
- 15:09Speaker 2: means it has finally begun. He struggled to get out
- 15:13Speaker 2: between breaths. I sat myself up and looked over at
- 15:17Speaker 2: the professor. His skin looked oddly red, with flakes forming
- 15:21Speaker 2: from ruptured blisters all over his body.
- 15:23Speaker 1: What did you do?
- 15:25Speaker 3: I gave you the cure. The only thing that can
- 15:28Speaker 3: destroy humanity. My creation. It'll save this planet from us.
- 15:35Speaker 2: His head started sinking as more blisters formed on his body.
- 15:39Speaker 2: On his arm, chunks of flesh had rotted straight off.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He was infected with something, the same thing he'd given me.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Don't worry, Carl. You're the only one that can withstand
- 15:49Speaker 3: this disease. That's why you're special. Because you'll be the
- 15:54Speaker 3: one that is remembered as Patient Zero.
- 15:58Speaker 2: He passed out on his desk, barely breathing. Then I
- 16:02Speaker 2: heard knocks on the door as the rest of the
- 16:04Speaker 2: crew were starting to get concerned.
- 16:06Speaker 1: No, wait! I tried to yell, but it was too late.
- 16:09Speaker 1: They'd already barged in.
- 16:11Speaker 2: What the hell happened to the professor?
- 16:13Speaker 1: One of them asked as they went to check on him.
- 16:15Speaker 1: It was too late.
- 16:17Speaker 2: They'd already breathed the same air as us, which meant
- 16:20Speaker 2: they would be dead in a couple of hours at most.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Only a minute after they touched him, the first crewman
- 16:25Speaker 2: started coughing violently.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Then the second.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Third, and before the hour had passed.
- 16:30Speaker 1: They were all dying.
- 16:32Speaker 2: They called for help. No one came, because they didn't
- 16:35Speaker 2: want to release the contagion. I was the only healthy one,
- 16:39Speaker 2: which led the administration to believe that there might be
- 16:41Speaker 2: a cure in my blood. They demanded blood samples be
- 16:44Speaker 2: taken from me. But as the crew fell unconscious, I
- 16:47Speaker 2: had to make a decision. If I let any sample
- 16:49Speaker 2: escape this lab, the pathogen would be out there. So
- 16:53Speaker 2: I did the only right thing. I disabled the only
- 16:56Speaker 2: entrance into the lab, putting myself.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Into eternal lockdown. What are you doing, Carl?
- 17:01Speaker 2: One of the security guards said over the loudspeakers. We're
- 17:04Speaker 2: sending in a hazmat team to save your sorry ass.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Open the damn door.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I can't. You'll get infected, he said. No, I won't.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I'm not going to die from this. But everyone that
- 17:15Speaker 2: gets near me will. If I open this door, I'll
- 17:18Speaker 2: start the spread to the outside world. There's no other way.
- 17:21Speaker 2: But then I heard him cough through the radio, which
- 17:24Speaker 2: is when it hit me that the professor had opened
- 17:26Speaker 2: up the vents, allowing the toxic air within to mix
- 17:30Speaker 2: with theirs.
- 17:31Speaker 3: What the hell is happening to me?
- 17:33Speaker 1: The security guard said over the radio.
- 17:35Speaker 2: He was dead, just like everyone else within the building. Listen,
- 17:39Speaker 2: you need to seal down the building.
- 17:41Speaker 3: No, I can't.
- 17:43Speaker 2: If you don't do it now, everyone is going to die.
- 17:47Speaker 2: He left the radio. And I could only pray that
- 17:50Speaker 2: we weren't too late. Even the hazmat team was coughing
- 17:53Speaker 2: their lungs out. They'd been infected before they even came
- 17:56Speaker 2: down here. The only one immune was myself. Because I
- 18:00Speaker 2: was the ultimate carrier.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I locked it down. I.
- 18:03Speaker 1: I.
- 18:04Speaker 2: The security guard said over the radio with his last breath.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Everyone died shortly after that. With the building on permanent lockdown...
- 18:13Speaker 2: I was alone. That was seven months ago. Since then,
- 18:17Speaker 2: I've been working on finding a cure for myself, but
- 18:20Speaker 2: I'm just not smart enough. Supplies have run out, and
- 18:24Speaker 2: as I'm typing this, my vision has gone blurry with
- 18:27Speaker 2: hunger and thirst. I'm going to die soon, but as
- 18:30Speaker 2: long as the contagion remains within this building, it will
- 18:34Speaker 2: have been worth it. We were just chilling in front
- 18:39Speaker 2: of the television. idly watching the colorful images without thinking
- 18:43Speaker 2: too much about its actual content. That had always been
- 18:47Speaker 2: our usual routine, to get home, not speak, and just
- 18:52Speaker 2: turn our brains off for the evening. But on that
- 18:55Speaker 2: night in particular, all of our phones went off within.
- 18:58Speaker 1: 15 seconds of each other.
- 19:01Speaker 2: We all jumped to attention in confusion, checking our phones simultaneously.
- 19:07Speaker 2: All it had been was a simple message. but one
- 19:10Speaker 2: carrying a crystal clear meaning. Emergency alert. This is a
- 19:16Speaker 2: message to the citizens of Newport. Do not leave your homes.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Stay inside and don't open the door to anyone, not
- 19:24Speaker 2: even your own family or friends. This is not a test.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Stay inside. Turn off the lights.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Our minds raced, but none of us were able to
- 19:35Speaker 2: speak a single word. I looked over at my dad,
- 19:39Speaker 2: who'd put on his glasses to make sure he read
- 19:41Speaker 2: the message correctly. My mother seemed worried, her eyes filled
- 19:46Speaker 2: to the brim with panic.
- 19:48Speaker 1: What is this? My dad asked. finally asked.
- 19:52Speaker 2: While the message was clear, it didn't really explain the situation.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It was the first and only emergency alert we'd ever
- 20:00Speaker 2: received in our small town. Apart from the occasional test message,
- 20:06Speaker 2: it was real. Something dangerous was on its way, and
- 20:10Speaker 2: we hadn't the faintest idea what. I went over to
- 20:13Speaker 2: the window, only to see each and every one of
- 20:16Speaker 2: our neighbors begin to turn the lights off. Within a
- 20:20Speaker 2: couple of minutes, the entire neighborhood had turned dark, leaving
- 20:25Speaker 2: us confused in a haze of ignorance. I'm calling the police,
- 20:29Speaker 2: Dad said as he dialed the number. It started to ring,
- 20:33Speaker 2: and Dad put the phone on speaker. But, Instead of
- 20:37Speaker 2: a person picking up, he just received an automated message.
- 20:42Speaker 3: We're experiencing heavy call volumes at this time. Please, do
- 20:45Speaker 3: not hang up.
- 20:46Speaker 2: You will be redirected to one of our dispatchers shortly.
- 20:50Speaker 3: What is going on?
- 20:51Speaker 1: Mom asked.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 20:53Speaker 1: This is.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Dad said before trailing off. I still stood by the window,
- 20:59Speaker 2: watching the empty neighborhood, wondering if anyone would defy the
- 21:02Speaker 2: message and go outside.
- 21:04Speaker 1: In the meantime.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Dad was trying to call the police again. After the
- 21:09Speaker 2: third attempt, he tried to reach his coworker instead, who
- 21:13Speaker 2: lived further downtown. Hey, David, did you get the same
- 21:17Speaker 2: message as us?
- 21:18Speaker 1: Dad asked.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's bizarre. Most people are staying inside though. A
- 21:22Speaker 2: few went out on the street to mess around, those idiots.
- 21:25Speaker 2: They seem fine, but I don't know.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Wait, what's that?
- 21:30Speaker 2: Dad waited patiently as David went silent on the other
- 21:32Speaker 2: end of the line. I think the military is out
- 21:35Speaker 2: on the street. but they look odd. They're all wearing
- 21:38Speaker 2: gas masks, but they have three eyes. I don't even
- 21:43Speaker 2: know what kind of weapons they're carrying. Can you take
- 21:46Speaker 2: a picture and send it to us?
- 21:49Speaker 1: I'll try. Hold on.
- 21:52Speaker 2: A few seconds passed, and another beep could be heard
- 21:55Speaker 2: from my dad's phone, signifying that we'd received a picture.
- 21:59Speaker 2: My dad quickly opened it, but what greeted us was
- 22:02Speaker 2: little more than a tangled mess of colors from a
- 22:04Speaker 2: clearly corrupt photograph. David, the picture isn't showing up.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Try again.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it doesn't work.
- 22:12Speaker 2: The camera won't save the pictures correctly. Aloud, Screech took
- 22:16Speaker 2: over the line, shoving us all to the ground as
- 22:18Speaker 2: we held our hands tightly over our ears. Though it
- 22:21Speaker 2: came from the phone, it was an impossible sound that
- 22:24Speaker 2: should have blown the speakers to smithereens in a second.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Once the sound had subsided, we could still hear someone
- 22:31Speaker 2: frantically breathing on the other end.
- 22:33Speaker 1: David, what happened? Thank you.
- 22:36Speaker 3: They killed, killed them all.
- 22:37Speaker 2: They shot them with these weapons, just shredded them to pieces.
- 22:40Speaker 2: All the, that's his, his, he stuttered. David, you need
- 22:45Speaker 2: to hide, dad yelled. But they're, they're just standing there.
- 22:50Speaker 2: It's like they're frozen in place.
- 22:51Speaker 3: I don't understand.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Why are they doing this?
- 22:54Speaker 1: Why are they? His words froze in his throat. Oh
- 22:59Speaker 1: my God. They saw me.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They're coming towards me. They're Dad tried to call David back,
- 23:08Speaker 2: but no one responded. Our house felt dead silent, only
- 23:14Speaker 2: interrupted by the intermittent beeps produced by the calling phone.
- 23:18Speaker 2: My mom wandered nervously around the house, and I just
- 23:21Speaker 2: stared at the window, paranoid that something might break through
- 23:25Speaker 2: the door.
- 23:27Speaker 1: He's gone.
- 23:28Speaker 2: David, pick up the damn phone. Dad mumbled to himself.
- 23:33Speaker 2: That's when I saw them. walking down the street. They
- 23:37Speaker 2: weren't moving normally, and their steps were too quick, each
- 23:41Speaker 2: movement snapping into place. They were wearing strange uniforms that
- 23:46Speaker 2: might have looked like military uniforms in the dark. But
- 23:49Speaker 2: once they got closer, it was clear they weren't even human.
- 23:55Speaker 2: One of the neighbors' doors shut open. and the Johnsons
- 23:57Speaker 2: came running towards the military, thinking they were finally safe.
- 24:02Speaker 2: But no sooner had they been spotted by the marching
- 24:05Speaker 2: creatures before.
- 24:06Speaker 1: They lifted their weapons.
- 24:08Speaker 2: The same screech filled the neighborhood, almost knocking me to
- 24:11Speaker 2: the ground as the air literally started to vibrate. The
- 24:15Speaker 2: family screamed in agony for a moment, but within seconds,
- 24:19Speaker 2: their bodies just started disintegrating until all that was left
- 24:24Speaker 2: was a pile of flesh that resembled minced meat I
- 24:28Speaker 2: wanted to scream, but before I got the chance, my
- 24:31Speaker 2: dad put his hand over my mouth.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Do you want to die?
- 24:34Speaker 1: Keep your mouth shut, he whispered.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Just that mere sound briefly turned the creature's attention in
- 24:42Speaker 2: our direction. But once we fell silent, they just stopped.
- 24:47Speaker 2: There they stood, as if frozen in time. For minutes,
- 24:52Speaker 2: all we could do was stare at them in shock. Then,
- 24:56Speaker 2: One of the neighbor's automatic lights turned on, triggered by
- 24:59Speaker 2: the cat returning home. The same second, the creatures all
- 25:03Speaker 2: turned to the house, raising their weapons and firing. As
- 25:06Speaker 2: the loud sound rang through the house, my dad grabbed.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Me and my mom.
- 25:10Speaker 2: We were taking the opportunity to flee to the basement,
- 25:12Speaker 2: where we prayed we might be safe at least for
- 25:15Speaker 2: a while. We never even saw what happened to the
- 25:18Speaker 2: neighbor's house. We just heard the screams of agony as
- 25:20Speaker 2: they all fell to pieces. Now we're just hiding down here,
- 25:25Speaker 2: without food, without water. We've tried to call for help,
- 25:29Speaker 2: but no one is picking up. Whether it's because they're
- 25:33Speaker 2: dead or hiding, we don't know. So I'm sending this,
- 25:38Speaker 2: a hopeless call for help. If anyone out there receives this,
- 25:43Speaker 2: please save us. We don't have much time left. Thanks
