- 0:00Bonjour et bienvenue at Learn French with Alexa, the podcast.
- 0:04The podcast. Now, in this podcast, I'm going
- 0:08to read you a short passage in French based on a fun fact about
- 0:13me, Alexa Polidoro. And you may think, "Well, who
- 0:17are you?". Just in case the algorithm has
- 0:21taken you to me, well, I'm Alexa from Learn French with Alexa,
- 0:25and you are here to learn some French, just in case you don't
- 0:29know what you're doing here. Anyway, quite simple, I'm going
- 0:34to read you a fun fact about me, and we are going to ask you, or
- 0:40we, as in I, myself and I, are going to ask you a question
- 0:44based on this. So what we are going to do is
- 0:47read it the first time, then I will ask you a question based on
- 0:52this very fun fact of mine. Okay?
- 0:54Are you ready? Now, the focus of today's
- 0:59passage is about adjectives, okay?
- 1:01So try to spot the adjectives. So listen really carefully to
- 1:06the text, and try to spot the adjectives, if you can.
- 1:09If you cannot, it's okay. I'm going to point them out in a
- 1:13minute. Okay.
- 1:14Écoutez attentivement. Il y a plusieurs choses que je
- 1:19déteste dans la vie. En voici deux.
- 1:22D'abord, c'est d'avoir des chaussettes mouillées.
- 1:26Il n'y a rien de pire que de marcher dans l'eau en
- 1:29chaussettes. Pour moi, la sensation est
- 1:33tellement désagréable que je dois les enlever tout de suite.
- 1:38Et puis, je n'aime pas quand les gens ne respectent pas mon
- 1:42espace personnel. Il n'y a aucune raison de se
- 1:47coller aux autres. Okay.
- 1:51So this is another fun fact about me.
- 1:55Did you get it? Now, the question is going to be
- 1:59quite leading, and you're going to understand what the text is
- 2:02about. Here's the question.
- 2:04Qu'est-ce que je déteste le plus ?
- 2:07Now, if I start a question with 'qu'est-ce que,' it means what
- 2:15is it, okay? Now, literal translation is what
- 2:18is it that. Qu'est-ce que.
- 2:22What is it that je déteste, I detest or hate, le plus, the
- 2:28most. Okay?
- 2:29Now, listen to the text a second time and answer this question:
- 2:32Qu'est-ce que je déteste le plus ?
- 2:35What is it I hate the most? Here we go.
- 3:14Okay. Now we've listened to the text
- 3:17twice. We know the question: Qu'est-ce
- 3:18que je déteste le plus ? What is it I hate the most?
- 3:23What did you hear? Hmm.
- 3:27I heard the word 'chaussettes' twice when I read it.
- 3:32Chaussettes. That means socks.
- 3:34But what is it I hate the most about socks?
- 3:38Now, the adjective 'mouillées' here is really important.
- 3:43Mouillées means wet. Mouillées.
- 3:47Chaussettes mouillées. Wet socks.
- 3:51Now, usually in French, and this is what you have to understand,
- 3:54is that the adjective comes after the noun, except for some,
- 3:59and there is an exception to the rule, okay?
- 4:03Now, in this case, chaussettes mouillées is wet socks.
- 4:06So mouillées is wet, and chaussettes is socks.
- 4:09Okay? Mouillées.
- 4:12Mouillées. Can you say that?
- 4:14Mouillées. So les chaussettes mouillées is
- 4:16one of the things I hate the most.
- 4:19Don't ask me why. I don't know why, okay?
- 4:22Je déteste avoir les chaussettes mouillées.
- 4:26Okay? Pourquoi?
- 4:27Parce que c'est une sensation désagréable.
- 4:30Now, here's another adjective. Désagréable.
- 4:35Désagréable, c'est le contraire d'agréable.
- 4:40Agreeable. Désagréable, disagreeable.
- 4:45And do you know what is the second thing I hate the most?
- 4:50Did you hear 'mon espace personnel'?
- 4:53Yes. My personal space.
- 4:58Okay? Quand les gens ne respectent pas
- 5:04mon espace personnel. It's when people, les gens, ne
- 5:09respectent pas, do not respect. Here you've got the negation
- 5:13'ne,' and then the verb 'respectent' and 'pas,' which is
- 5:17not. Ne pas.
- 5:20When they do not respect my personal space.
- 5:25Okay? And then I add on to the text
- 5:29'il n'y a aucune raison de se coller aux autres'.
- 5:32There is no reason, aucune, as in not at all, no reason to
- 5:39stick to someone else or to be really close.
- 5:43De se coller. Now, coller means to glue or
- 5:47stick, okay? De se coller.
- 5:49So it's to stick right up against other people, les
- 5:55autres. Okay?
- 5:56So to answer the question: Qu'est-ce que je déteste le plus
- 6:01? Je déteste les chaussettes
- 6:04mouillées parce que la sensation est désagréable.
- 6:08Et la deuxième chose, je déteste quand les gens ne respectent pas
- 6:15mon espace personnel. Now, here's my question.
- 6:19I'm going to read the text again.
- 6:23What do you hate the most ? Qu'est-ce que vous détestez le
- 6:27plus ? Here's the text again.
- 6:31Listen really carefully. Il y a plusieurs choses que je
- 6:37déteste dans la vie. En voici deux.
- 6:40D'abord, c'est d'avoir les chaussettes mouillées.
- 6:44Il n'y a rien de pire que de marcher dans l'eau en
- 6:48chaussettes. Pour moi, la sensation est
- 6:52tellement désagréable que je dois les enlever tout de suite.
- 6:58Et puis, je n'aime pas quand les gens ne respectent pas mon
- 7:02espace personnel. Il n'y a aucune raison de se
- 7:07coller aux autres. OK.
- 7:10Now we've read this text three times.
- 7:14How much of it do you understand?
- 7:17And could you write down what you hate the most?
- 7:21Ce que je déteste le plus. What I hate the most is.
- 7:27Ce que je déteste le plus, c'est...
- 7:30And then you tell me. It could be anything.
- 7:33This is only two of many things that I hate the most.
- 7:37And you will hear about that because I have some really odd
- 7:43quirks. Now, let's have a look at the
- 7:45text one last time and we are going to translate it together.
- 7:50Il y a plusieurs choses que je déteste dans la vie.
- 7:53There are several things I hate in life.
- 7:56En voici deux. Here are two of them.
- 8:00D'abord, c'est d'avoir les chaussettes mouillées.
- 8:04Firstly, I hate having wet socks.
- 8:07First is d'abord. Il n'y a rien de pire que de
- 8:12marcher dans l'eau en chaussettes.
- 8:14There is nothing worse, pire, worse, than walking through
- 8:19water in socks. En chaussettes.
- 8:21In your socks. Pour moi, for me, la sensation
- 8:27est tellement désagréable que je dois les enlever tout de suite.
- 8:33The feeling is so unpleasant that I have to take them off
- 8:40straight away. Tout de suite.
- 8:42Straight away. Et puis, and then or secondly,
- 8:49je n'aime pas quand les gens ne respectent pas mon espace
- 8:52personnel. I don't like it when people
- 8:56don't respect my personal space. Il n'y a aucune raison de se
- 9:01coller aux autres. There is no reason to stick
- 9:04right up against other people. Don't you think?
- 9:08Of course, this is my personal opinion, by the way.
- 9:13And I can imagine that some people would enjoy the
- 9:17chaussettes mouillées... or not. I don't know.
- 9:19Tell me. I want you to tell me what you
- 9:22hate the most. OK?
- 9:23Or is it just me and my funny pet peeves?
- 9:28Right. Now, the adjectives that I
- 9:32wanted you to have a look at were mouillées as in wet,
- 9:36chaussettes mouillées, désagréable, disagreeable,
- 9:40personnel, espace personnel, personal space.
- 9:44Again, here the adjective comes after the noun.
- 9:48There are many adjectives that come before the noun and there
- 9:52are rules. And I follow all of that at
- 9:55Learn French with Alexa, my complete and very popular
- 9:59Complete French Course on my website
- 10:02learnfrenchwithalexa.com. See, I sponsor my own podcast.
- 10:10Well, you may as well. Now, remember, all adjective has
- 10:14to agree in gender and number with the word it is related to.
- 10:19If chaussette is feminine, then mouillée will be feminine.
- 10:23If chaussettes is feminine plural, mouillées will have to
- 10:27reflect that feminine plural. In my case, mouillées ends in
- 10:31'-ées'. You can't hear it, but it's
- 10:33definitely written like that. Otherwise, it's a spelling
- 10:36mistake. And for more like this, keep on
- 10:39listening. We are Learn French with Alexa.
- 10:42We are everywhere. Literally everywhere.
- 10:47Bisou bisou!
