- 0:09Speaker 1: don't Hive sports show right here on Radio Folks Done.
- 0:19Speaker 1: On today's show, we have a massive roundup of local
- 0:21Speaker 1: cricket scores as most teams have just one game to
- 0:24Speaker 1: go if the weather's nice, then we've got news about
- 0:34Speaker 1: our local football teams. Five k your Way Park Run,
- 0:38Speaker 1: tourist venues, the Done Thompson Mile, an ultramarathon in the
- 0:49Speaker 1: dark in Wales, rugby and hockey fixtures, and some netball news.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Are we going to start the show with a belter?
- 1:05Speaker 1: I love starting the show on a real good note
- 1:09Speaker 1: Oven' no this phrases this one.
- 1:13Speaker 2: This is Wax and Bridge to your Heart. But build
- 1:44Speaker 2: a Bridge to your Heart by Wax.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I hope you had that turned up really really loud
- 1:50Speaker 1: in the office, annoying everybody. What a belter of a tune?
- 1:53Speaker 3: Eh?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Love it? Actually? Do you know what wax? It's only
- 1:57Speaker 1: two guys. Actually one was Graham Goldman from ten CC
- 2:03Speaker 1: and the other one was Andrew gold remember him. He
- 2:06Speaker 1: wrote a song called Lonely Boy, a bit of like
- 2:09Speaker 1: a story song.
- 2:09Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I might dig it out of
- 2:12Speaker 1: the playlist later but we better get on with some
- 2:15Speaker 1: sport now because we have got a massive report coming
- 2:18Speaker 1: up about cricket. What is coming. Saturday is the last
- 2:23Speaker 1: one of the season for most of our clubs. Some
- 2:25Speaker 1: have finished already, so I've prepared a comprehensive roundup of
- 2:29Speaker 1: all our local clubs and a summary of where they
- 2:32Speaker 1: stand in their respective divisions. So let's start with Folks
- 2:35Speaker 1: the first eleven. Well, they played their cricket in the Championship,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which is the second tier of the Kent Cricket League.
- 2:43Speaker 1: They traveled to which the ball who batted first and
- 2:46Speaker 1: making really having a bad day with the bat and
- 2:49Speaker 1: could only make forty four or not out, so they
- 2:51Speaker 1: lost the game by one hundred and thirty six runs,
- 2:54Speaker 1: leaving them in seventh place out of ten. Their last
- 2:57Speaker 1: game on Saturday is at home to Canterbury are fourth,
- 3:01Speaker 1: so there are no real issues here. Both teams are
- 3:04Speaker 1: going to stay in his Championship for another season. So
- 3:08Speaker 1: I do mention Folkston first eleven nearly every time I can,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but they have got, believe it or not, four other teams,
- 3:15Speaker 1: so we're going to give them a little mentioned a
- 3:17Speaker 1: little update now. In Division six in the Hurricane Section.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Folkston's second eleven's game at home against Moat Cricket Club
- 3:26Speaker 1: was incomplete, probably due to the weather. Folkston batted first,
- 3:30Speaker 1: making two hundred and sixty four for four, then made
- 3:33Speaker 1: ninety seventh to three. Now the Seconds, like the first eleven,
- 3:37Speaker 1: are in seventh spot out of ten. Their last game
- 3:40Speaker 1: is away to Nonnington, who are fourth in Division ten.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Shepherd Section is the third eleven. Believe you or Not
- 3:48Speaker 1: are also seventh. Last Saturday, they travel to Reculver and
- 3:53Speaker 1: beat them by one hundred and twenty four runs Anthony
- 3:56Speaker 1: Stanley corn Bole just two runs short of his century
- 3:59Speaker 1: on Well, what a shame, what a waste they folks.
- 4:03Speaker 1: In thirty eleven's last game is at home to already doomed.
- 4:07Speaker 1: They're all doomed Westgate on Sea in Division eleven Shepherd
- 4:12Speaker 1: Section Folks and fourteen, who are fifth out of eight
- 4:16Speaker 1: teams in that division were They fielded first against Nelson
- 4:20Speaker 1: Cricket Club from Thanet, who made one hundred and sixty
- 4:22Speaker 1: eight for nine Folkston. Then they made one hundred and
- 4:27Speaker 1: sixty nine for nine, so they won the game by
- 4:31Speaker 1: one wicket. This week they are at home to top
- 4:34Speaker 1: of the table Ashford second eleven, who looks certain to
- 4:38Speaker 1: win that division even if they lose on Saturday. In
- 4:41Speaker 1: Division twelve, Shepherd Section Folkston a fifth eleven who are
- 4:45Speaker 1: sixth out of seven teams. Not so good there, but
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's only a little league and it's it's mainly youth teams, youngsters,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and that they lost the top team at Street End,
- 4:54Speaker 1: who come from Justice side of Canterbury. The fifth eleven's
- 4:57Speaker 1: last game is a way to Chestfield, which means a
- 5:00Speaker 1: trip close to Whitstaball. So there you are. That's the
- 5:04Speaker 1: up to date news from the Folks and five teams.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So we're going to go through the rest shortly. But
- 5:10Speaker 1: I had to. I had to dig this one out
- 5:12Speaker 1: of the playlist and talking of ten c C which
- 5:15Speaker 1: we were a bit earlier, this is a Dreadlock holiday.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I don't like cricket, m.
- 5:44Speaker 4: I love.
- 6:00Speaker 1: CEC. There you know, that's about the only song I've
- 6:04Speaker 1: around that I think's got a mention of cricket. Put
- 6:08Speaker 1: cricket in the playlist and nothing comes up. So there
- 6:11Speaker 1: we go. Then CEC Dreadlock Holiday, so it's talking to crickets.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I've split this up into two this week because they've
- 6:17Speaker 1: got so much to get through, so you're gonna excuse
- 6:20Speaker 1: me a seconds. They a little cough off here, then
- 6:23Speaker 1: just clear my throats because moving on to our other
- 6:26Speaker 1: local teams. Now, Siptom Park, well they run two Saturday teams,
- 6:31Speaker 1: whereas all the others run are just one and not
- 6:33Speaker 1: forgetting that most of them run Sunday and thriving youth teams.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So let's let's crack on with Siptom Part. The first eleven, well,
- 6:41Speaker 1: they're currently fourth out of ten in Division five Hurricane Section.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Now they beat Tunbridge by four wickets. Their last game
- 6:48Speaker 1: is at home against Batchild who are bottom of the table,
- 6:52Speaker 1: and they're already doomed. We're all doomed for a relegation.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Now the second eleven have finished all their fixtures and
- 6:59Speaker 1: have ended up in second place with promotion. Samdbridge, who
- 7:03Speaker 1: are in third, have also finished, so it looks like
- 7:05Speaker 1: straight End will win the league with one game to go.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I mean, this is all happening. In Division twelve Shepherd Section,
- 7:13Speaker 1: the Seconds did go out on a high though they
- 7:15Speaker 1: beat Chestfield by seventy one runs. In Division nine Shepherd Section, Siltward,
- 7:21Speaker 1: who are fifth out of ten, lost by just two
- 7:24Speaker 1: runs to worth. Siltward then made two hundred and thirty five,
- 7:28Speaker 1: just two runs short in the very last over, So
- 7:31Speaker 1: what tenth finish that must have been to the game
- 7:34Speaker 1: their last game. Silta's last game is a way to
- 7:36Speaker 1: Herne Bay, who have already won the league and can't
- 7:39Speaker 1: be caught. So on to our last two teams, well,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Hawkins and Hive. They played each other at Hawkins last Saturday,
- 7:47Speaker 1: one that I did make a point of going up
- 7:48Speaker 1: to see now. Before the game, Hawkins were top of
- 7:51Speaker 1: the table and needed just nine points to win to
- 7:55Speaker 1: win the league. Again, They've only just got the one
- 7:58Speaker 1: game to go this Saturday. Now the scoring is such
- 8:01Speaker 1: that you can get twenty points for a win, but
- 8:04Speaker 1: if I have beat them comprehensively, Hawkins can still pick
- 8:08Speaker 1: up four points for losing. Then Hive would have to
- 8:11Speaker 1: hope that they were well beaten the following week in
- 8:13Speaker 1: their last game, But the weather gods played a different
- 8:17Speaker 1: They had a different idea. I've batted first and made
- 8:21Speaker 1: two hundred and two all out Grant Channel, making seventy two.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Hawkins then took to the crease and made twenty six
- 8:27Speaker 1: for two before the heavens opened and the game was abandoned.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So this meant, ironically, after all those points permutations that
- 8:35Speaker 1: I was working out, both teams received ten points each,
- 8:39Speaker 1: which was enough for Hawkins to win the league. Now
- 8:42Speaker 1: the question is would I have have beaten them on
- 8:45Speaker 1: the day. Well, unfortunately we will never know where they
- 8:49Speaker 1: were looking good high They made a good start. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: you know the weather always plays a part in cricket,
- 8:54Speaker 1: doesn't it. This Saturday, Hawkins's last game is away at
- 8:59Speaker 1: Lawrence and Highland Court, and Hive's last game is at
- 9:02Speaker 1: home against Canterbury and if they win this at least
- 9:05Speaker 1: they will get promotion for coming in second place. Now
- 9:09Speaker 1: I must just add that I was chatting to scorer
- 9:11Speaker 1: John Osborne, who was actually a member of the Hive squad,
- 9:15Speaker 1: as there was a bit of a mix up over
- 9:16Speaker 1: the start time. I mean, normally the home team do
- 9:19Speaker 1: the scoring, but as a seasoned scorer, John had other ideas.
- 9:24Speaker 1: He had his laptop and it's scoring equipment in his
- 9:27Speaker 1: car and he stepped in at the last minute. Now,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I was also chatting to his daughter Emily, who all
- 9:32Speaker 1: of a sudden disappeared for a while and then came back.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And when I looked to look again. She was all
- 9:36Speaker 1: kitted up ready to bat. She was standing in as
- 9:39Speaker 1: high that there's some last minute players who couldn't make it,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and I must have been. After chatting to her unless
- 9:45Speaker 1: she approached the wicket, I found myself getting really nervous
- 9:48Speaker 1: for her, the only lady in the whole squad out
- 9:52Speaker 1: of the two teams. Really But anyway, so I said
- 9:57Speaker 1: to her dad, aren't you nervous for Emily? Well, he
- 10:00Speaker 1: told me that she played in the first team before,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but he always worried the most that she would be
- 10:06Speaker 1: clean bolted on the first ball, which didn't happen anyway.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Emily stayed in for a couple of overs but was
- 10:13Speaker 1: caught behind by former guests of the show wicket keeper
- 10:16Speaker 1: Terry Dunham, when a ball just snicked off a bat.
- 10:19Speaker 1: But I thought she was a very brave young lady. Well,
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's the cricket done and dusted for today. I'll be
- 10:25Speaker 1: reporting back next Thursday on how all these teams fared
- 10:29Speaker 1: on the very last day of the season. And I've
- 10:31Speaker 1: just checked the weather forecast and you know what, it
- 10:33Speaker 1: looks quite nice. So with a bit of a luck,
- 10:36Speaker 1: all the games will be played, all the loose ends
- 10:38Speaker 1: will be tied up and we'll let you know what
- 10:40Speaker 1: goes on next week. Right now, and in the meantime,
- 10:44Speaker 1: let's have a little bit of Robbie and let me
- 10:46Speaker 1: entertain you. Robbie Williams nineteen ninety eight, let me entertain you. Okay,
- 11:17Speaker 1: So we turn our attentions to a local football now,
- 11:20Speaker 1: folks and in Victor earned themselves two thy two hundred
- 11:23Speaker 1: and fifty pound by beating seven Oaks three nil in
- 11:26Speaker 1: the first round qualifying of the FA Cup at Ashford's
- 11:29Speaker 1: Homelands ground, and in the next round they have a
- 11:32Speaker 1: tough home game against Maidstone United, but quite where the
- 11:35Speaker 1: venue will be is undecided. As we all know now, folks,
- 11:40Speaker 1: in Victor is undergoing a change from grass to three
- 11:44Speaker 1: G and so the pitch isn't ready. We've been playing
- 11:47Speaker 1: technically our home games at Margate, but I haven't seen
- 11:51Speaker 1: all the fixtures. But I mean if Margate have been
- 11:55Speaker 1: drawn at home that day or Ashford drawn at home
- 11:57Speaker 1: that day, then I don't know what's going to happen,
- 12:00Speaker 1: So we just have to wait and see that one. Meanwhile,
- 12:03Speaker 1: it's back to a league action as in Victor welcome
- 12:06Speaker 1: Whitehawk to Margate's Hotsdown Park, our home ground for that week.
- 12:11Speaker 1: On Saturday the sixth Fivetown still in a sort of
- 12:14Speaker 1: a bad streak of form after a good start. Last
- 12:17Speaker 1: week they lost a one nil to Faversham Strike Force
- 12:20Speaker 1: and this was played at Whitstable Town's ground. And on
- 12:23Speaker 1: Saturday it's home to Fisher Then Tuesday it's home again,
- 12:27Speaker 1: this time to Larkefield and New Hive. It's a chance,
- 12:30Speaker 1: there's two games very close together. It's a chance to
- 12:32Speaker 1: pick up some points. Serve really. But thanks to the
- 12:35Speaker 1: good start to the season, they are currently ninth out
- 12:38Speaker 1: of nineteen in the NLG Kent County League Premier Division.
- 12:42Speaker 1: New Romney traveled to Maidstone United's Galahas Stadium and the
- 12:47Speaker 1: beat Cuxton two to one there Cuxton a sharing. That's
- 12:50Speaker 1: a great ground share, isn't it? At the Gallahut This
- 12:54Speaker 1: Saturday they're at home to a long Lane FC. And
- 12:57Speaker 1: last week I was watching Hawkins play cricket against Hive.
- 13:01Speaker 1: But next door, and I mean literally next door, is
- 13:04Speaker 1: Hawkins Town's football ground, so I nipped over there and
- 13:07Speaker 1: watched most of the second half of their game against
- 13:09Speaker 1: Tandon Town, which by this time. I was just getting
- 13:12Speaker 1: a little bit niggerli towards the end, but Hawkins beat
- 13:15Speaker 1: them six' to. Two this Week, hawkings you're a home.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Again it's their turn to Play. Cuxton Now hawkins is
- 13:22Speaker 1: sit on top of the, table Whereas New romney are
- 13:24Speaker 1: slowly recovering after their poor start in fourteenth place out of.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Nineteen so last week in THE Fa cup there were
- 13:32Speaker 1: some Familiar kent teams'. Names Deal town Beat cobham two,
- 13:36Speaker 1: nil earned themselves another home, tie this time Against egghamtown
- 13:40Speaker 1: from The Combined Counties. League chathamtown Beat marlow four nil
- 13:45Speaker 1: And Ashford united Rains park At vale at two, nil
- 13:49Speaker 1: which luck of the drawer means That chatham now Play.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Ashford they meet each other at The Homeland. Stadium Ian
- 13:56Speaker 1: Ashford ramsgate lost two one To Cray, valley SO crayfa
- 14:00Speaker 1: away trip To Chertsey, town who play in The Southern
- 14:03Speaker 1: League Premier. Division now forgive me If i've missed any
- 14:06Speaker 1: of perhaps a Local kent team that you, support BUT
- 14:09Speaker 1: i just want to tell you about last SEASON'S Fa VARs, Winners,
- 14:13Speaker 1: whitstaball who played their football in The Southern Counties East Football,
- 14:17Speaker 1: league which is better known as The Skeffold league and
- 14:20Speaker 1: on paper they faced a massive. Challenge they were drawn
- 14:23Speaker 1: away against second Place Dullige hamlet from The Ishmien Premier,
- 14:27Speaker 1: league which is two divisions, higher And dallas always seem
- 14:31Speaker 1: to be knocking on the door of. Promotion so there
- 14:34Speaker 1: was no surprise WHEN i checked which the ball were
- 14:36Speaker 1: too nil down at, halftime but a massive surprise WHEN
- 14:40Speaker 1: i saw the full time. Finish it was a free

- 14:52Speaker 1: and we can look at the wider picture about THE
- 14:55Speaker 1: Fa cup and perhaps by then we might know when
- 14:59Speaker 1: folks or where folks then will be. Playing, okay back
- 15:02Speaker 1: to the music now from nineteen and ninety in touch

- 20:28Speaker 1: in the fifty k. Walk Don thompson lived in High
- 20:32Speaker 1: he was a teacher At Southland school In New romney
- 20:35Speaker 1: and in his latter years a member of The Folkston
- 20:37Speaker 1: Athletic club as it was. Then he started out as a,
- 20:41Speaker 1: runner but after an, injury turned his hand to. Racewalking
- 20:45Speaker 1: his claim to fame is winning the gold medal in
- 20:47Speaker 1: the nineteen Sixty. Olympics his training methods became stuff of
- 20:51Speaker 1: journalistic legends his attempt at fifty k in the nineteen
- 20:55Speaker 1: fifty Six olympics In. Australia he failed there when he
- 20:59Speaker 1: withdrew due to. Dehydration so he, thought, Right i'm going
- 21:03Speaker 1: to have to try something, Different so at home in,
- 21:05Speaker 1: hive he switched an Electric he switched on an electric
- 21:10Speaker 1: fire and run a bath to try and recreate the
- 21:12Speaker 1: warm atmosphere expected In. Italy but it wasn't, enough so
- 21:16Speaker 1: he added a paraffin heater with a boiling kettle on
- 21:19Speaker 1: top of it to create more hot. Steam and he
- 21:22Speaker 1: left it for a while and then returned to the,
- 21:24Speaker 1: room which was like a, hot steamy. Sauna, perfect he,
- 21:27Speaker 1: Thought so he did around thirty minutes of, exercise which
- 21:30Speaker 1: made him feel rather, faint and he was just thinking
- 21:33Speaker 1: it was the heat and the, humidity but it was
- 21:36Speaker 1: in fact carbon monoxide fumes from the paraffin, heater which
- 21:39Speaker 1: are potentially LOW i, threatening the same as exhaust. Fumes,
- 21:43Speaker 1: now if you ever see a story about To Don
- 21:45Speaker 1: thompson in, print this will most certainly be the one
- 21:48Speaker 1: you're going to. Read, now The italian crowd loved, him
- 21:52Speaker 1: and because he was just five' five they nicknamed Him,
- 21:55Speaker 1: ill topolino which these roughly translated me as the. Little,
- 21:59Speaker 1: mouse now his mum she made him a hat with
- 22:02Speaker 1: material cover in the covering the back of, his neck
- 22:05Speaker 1: similar to the ones worn By The French. Foreign, legion
- 22:08Speaker 1: now When the olympics came round and used, to, say,
- 22:10Speaker 1: oh well here we. Go again i'd expect they dust
- 22:12Speaker 1: me off and drag me, out AGAIN those, tv people
- 22:15Speaker 1: and they want to do an. Interview now in his,
- 22:18Speaker 1: latter years he Joined Folks In athletic club and back
- 22:20Speaker 1: in the DAY when i, was running myself And missus
- 22:23Speaker 1: ferrett would often take ourselves off to some obscure part
- 22:26Speaker 1: of the country to run a ten K and i
- 22:28Speaker 1: can't believe the number of times that we bumped into
- 22:30Speaker 1: down In his Folks. And vest my lasting Memory of
- 22:34Speaker 1: don is sharing a table with him and his wife
- 22:37Speaker 1: down at the Boat in. Pool restaurant you remember that
- 22:39Speaker 1: Boat In. Pool restaurant this is where the club Had their,
- 22:43Speaker 1: christmas do and he bought his gold medal Along and
- 22:46Speaker 1: i'm sure it would be the Only time i've ever
- 22:49Speaker 1: Handled an olympic. Gold medal so it's nice to see
- 22:52Speaker 1: the Club remembering don. Every year and it was Fitting That,
- 22:55Speaker 1: tina ekke who, knew him she explained his story to
- 22:59Speaker 1: the club members before they ran, their miles as there
- 23:02Speaker 1: were many younger members may not have been aware of,
- 23:05Speaker 1: his achievements and it's good to know that his, legacy
- 23:08Speaker 1: continued so Basically The Don, thompson mile and they all
- 23:11Speaker 1: started off together down the far end By The hide
- 23:15Speaker 1: imperial and run back so that there was, time keeping
- 23:19Speaker 1: was coordinating the start time and the, finish times and
- 23:25Speaker 1: so forty six of them were charging along. The promenade
- 23:28Speaker 1: as if that, wasn't enough there was a group Of
- 23:30Speaker 1: a blister sisters who were, GETTING together i, do believe
- 23:33Speaker 1: to celebrate the life of one of their. Former members
- 23:37Speaker 1: so there was lots of them. Out there it's like the.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Twenty five, it, was uh, it was. It was it
- 23:43Speaker 1: was quite a. Pleasant evening we just dodged one, really
- 23:46Speaker 1: heavy serious SHOWER and i think the wind was was pushing.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Him along now just ADD when i add That Basically
- 23:54Speaker 1: don thompson was a. Race, walker NOW when i Was
- 23:57Speaker 1: in cyprus With The Paporse, running club attended a race
- 24:01Speaker 1: walking session and was talked to. Racewalk PROPERLY when i,
- 24:05Speaker 1: say properly there are rules that you do have to
- 24:08Speaker 1: follow Very strict one foot must be on the ground at.
- 24:11Speaker 1: All times AND what i was talking to the coach
- 24:16Speaker 1: that was taking us on, this session he said that
- 24:19Speaker 1: a lot of walkers are disqualified in the last fifty
- 24:23Speaker 1: yards when they've seen the finish and they start going,
- 24:27Speaker 1: for it and that's when they break. The rules and
- 24:30Speaker 1: if they break the rules in those last fifty minutes,
- 24:33Speaker 1: fifty yards. That's it. They're out they. Are disqualified so
- 24:37Speaker 1: it was. SO funny i just reminded. Of you there
- 24:39Speaker 1: must have been about thirty of us racewalking Around The
- 24:41Speaker 1: Coral coral Bay. Car park and for all these people
