- 0:00Drop the vape pen, get yourself some gold paint.
- 0:04This week on that car show, it seems to be all about Ryan and
- 0:08the cars he's driven. But I promise you, it definitely
- 0:10isn't. He talked about one particular
- 0:13car. What was the phrase you use,
- 0:14Ryan? Or Lindsey Sublime.
- 0:16It was sublime which car he called sublime.
- 0:21He also talked about driving a Diablo car that dreams are made
- 0:25of. We talked about the comparisons
- 0:27to the Jamaric Way video. Apparently not sublime though,
- 0:30sorry. Not sublime.
- 0:31That wasn't sublime. We also gave the team a
- 0:35challenge and it's all about what was peak Porsche.
- 0:38If you get back in time, what year would you go to?
- 0:41So listen to our answers on that.
- 0:43We talk a little bit about how the journalist world, the
- 0:46automotive journalist world feels like they've been done
- 0:49wrong by the fact that GM are doing away with Apple CarPlay.
- 0:53Is it such a big deal? I don't know NX is coming back.
- 0:57We talked a little bit about that and then finally plans for
- 1:01SEMA Land Rover shows and driving more exotics.
- 1:05All that and a whole lot more on this weeks that car show.
- 1:08That car show is brought to you by Sheffield Watches.
- 1:11Sheffield is the storied watchmaking brand that was
- 1:13revived a couple of years back by her good friend Jay Turkbus,
- 1:16and it's seen wild success in both the car and watch
- 1:19enthusiast communities. Sheffield offers a wide
- 1:22selection of watches, many inspired by the iconic designs
- 1:25of its 1960s dive models, most notably the one that Jay's
- 1:28appearance gave him in 1970, which ignited his lifelong
- 1:31passion for watches. Sheffield watches are high
- 1:34quality, reasonably priced in a great value.
- 1:36Sheffield has truly become the car guy and cargals watch of

- 1:51car show sent you. Welcome to this week's episode
- 1:55of that car show, and it's another crew show.
- 1:57Hey, gang, how you doing? Hey, hey.
- 1:59Great. How are you?
- 2:01Good, good. I'm going to apologize to our
- 2:03audience straight away because I feel like we're going to be
- 2:05living vicariously through Ryan for this episode.
- 2:08He's been up to all sorts of great staff and I feel very
- 2:11jealous. But yeah, before we do that, I
- 2:14wanted to talk about the new Subaru concepts that have just
- 2:17come out. So it's the Japanese Audio show
- 2:20this week and they released a couple of concepts, but in
- 2:25particular, have you guys seen the STIB?
- 2:28Yes, and it looked a bit familiar.
- 2:33It looked very familiar. The first thing is they they've
- 2:35done it wrong. They've done the launch wrong.
- 2:38So it looks like they've chosen World Rally Blue as the color,
- 2:41OK. And we all know that with World
- 2:43Rally Blue, you have to have gold wheels.
- 2:46True. The the other thing if you look
- 2:50at. The back of it, no gold wheels.
- 2:52No gold mill. It's it's a a miss Subaru.
- 2:55Come on, have you learned nothing over the last 25 years
- 2:58of having the STIWRX and all that sort of good stuff?
- 3:01There'll be a lot of vape smoke inhaled in anger today.
- 3:06That's right. That's right.
- 3:07Well, that's the opposite of like what do they say?
- 3:09Simplify your life by making decisions once.
- 3:11Like that decision was made a long time ago and we all support
- 3:14it. Like why are we mixing it up?
- 3:16It's a no brainer. It's no brainer.
- 3:18The car actually looks I, I don't know about you guys, but I
- 3:20look especially from the back, it looks like the Honda Civic
- 3:26Type R took a GR Corolla out on a date after they'd met on
- 3:30Tinder. They went to a cheap hotel, put
- 3:33on some Barry White, and the love child was the B concept STI
- 3:38because like, I can see bits of both cars.
- 3:40Yeah. Right.
- 3:42Very distinctly. Yeah.
- 3:44Particularly from the back, yeah.
- 3:46Yeah, it's interesting. It does say, I think on one of
- 3:48the stickers it does say it's going to be a boxer engine.
- 3:51Oh. So I did wonder whether they
- 3:53were going to share engines with other manufacturers that they
- 3:56may have shares in. Interesting.
- 4:00Well, and they, it's a concept. So at this point, it's pie in
- 4:05the sky. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:08It's very. Good.
- 4:09I mean it Really. I mean it.
- 4:11It it's a good looking thing. It looks, you know, futuristic
- 4:14it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:14The seats are amazing. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:18But I and it was a, it's a manual, which is great.
- 4:22That's always good. I mean, they're sticking with
- 4:25it. Got to appreciate that, right?
- 4:26They are saying that it's very close to production in terms of
- 4:30the actual product. So let's keep our fingers
- 4:33crossed, Let's hope they get some gold paint in the factory
- 4:37and. We, you know Dan, they say it's
- 4:39the metallics are the best ones to huff.
- 4:41Just saying. What does that mean?
- 4:44I don't know. It sounded really good.
- 4:46I I grew up watching cops, and it was always a metallic paint,
- 4:49right? That yeah, you know, covering
- 4:51the faces. Yeah, you got those.
- 4:52Amazing. Well, this was before social
- 4:54media, but talk about a picture that would have been made for an
- 4:56image that would have been made for social media.
- 4:58Just the metallic. Did you see those?
- 5:00There's your ad. There's your ad right there.
- 5:03Yeah. Go drop the vape pen, get
- 5:06yourself some gold paint. Go for a drive, but I think for
- 5:11me that's a yes, Make it and people will buy it A. 100
- 5:14percent, 100%. I guess the nearest thing that
- 5:17we have to that in real life right now is the GR Corolla.
- 5:20We've talked about that quite a few episodes, but Ryan seeing is
- 5:24believing, and you've finally been able to get behind the
- 5:26wheel. Is that right?
- 5:27It's over there somewhere. Yeah, You know, thank you,
- 5:29Toyota. I, I think I'm the, the last car
- 5:31car journalist in the country to drive the thing, but I wanted to
- 5:35drive the 25 before the 26 came out.
- 5:37And you know, I'd heard such wonderful things.
- 5:40But the other thing is everyone I know that bought 1 sold it
- 5:44within a year or two. With the exception, guilty,
- 5:50yeah. Yeah, but you're one of a
- 5:52handful of friends who did that exact same thing.
- 5:54And and so I figured, well, there must this must be flawed
- 5:58in some way. It must not be this perfect
- 5:59thing. You know, I had read about, but,
- 6:02and I gotta say so I took delivery of this thing.
- 6:05You know, I guess it was Monday and you know, the Toyota people
- 6:08rolled up and this one's in this beautiful dark Gray, which we
- 6:12probably be the color I would go for.
- 6:13It's a good looking thing. You know, it's got the the boxed
- 6:16fenders. It's it's, it looks good.
- 6:18It looks, you know, looks the part.
- 6:20And I drove it around a bit for the first day or two and just
- 6:23really wasn't blown away. It's a pokey thing around town,
- 6:26right? It's a single turbo, right?
- 6:29And like any single turbo, it can be a little on off around
- 6:31the city and didn't think a whole lot about it.
- 6:34Rides a little flinty, you know, and then I took it to the
- 6:37canyons and it's just, it's sublime.
- 6:41It's you know, so it's all-wheel drive.
- 6:43It's this single turbo, it's a manual.
- 6:45It's 300 horsepower, 295 LB feet of torque.
- 6:47You know, most of you listening know all this, but there's
- 6:49something about that recipe that just comes together so well.
- 6:52It's light on its feet. It's just, you know, when you're
- 6:56in the canons, you stay in that power band.
- 6:57You're always up above 4000 or whatever.
- 7:00It, the handling is amazing. It's it it corners flat, you
- 7:05know, it's it's a little sloppy compared to like a Porsche GT
- 7:08car, right? There's a little fat on the
- 7:09bone, but for 55 grand or whatever this the sticker is on
- 7:13this thing. I mean, if if I were looking for
- 7:16A1 car solution where I needed something my, my, you know, my
- 7:2013 year old could, you know, right in the back, we could take
- 7:22on a family trip. You know, the seats are great.
- 7:25Toyota has completely revamped their seats now Toyota seats are
- 7:28great. They used to sort of bend you
- 7:29into this, you know, C position and terribly uncomfortable.
- 7:33Could never buy a Toyota. Now the the seats across, you
- 7:36know, the line are great, but this thing, this would be my
- 7:38single car solution because I can take this to the canyons and
- 7:42and have that feeling of satisfaction, right.
- 7:45It isn't my GT4 right. It's not going to hit the same
- 7:48limits. You're not going to be carrying
- 7:49the same speed, but it's damn good for what it is.
- 7:52And I'm so glad that I'm, you know, I got the chance to drive
- 7:55it like it should be driven and and I will be back because I
- 7:58really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it, you know,
- 8:01I, I boy, I, I pulled on some, some cars with a lot more
- 8:04horsepower in the canyons. It was just, you know, so much
- 8:07so that they came up and said, wow, that car can hustle and
- 8:11right, I'm, I'm sold. I'm, I'm, you know.
- 8:15High price, yeah, High price. What did you so you, you owned
- 8:19one for a year or so, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 8:22I mean it's. Similar.
- 8:24For for 50 grand brand new you, I don't think you can get a
- 8:27better car. I think we talked about it on
- 8:29previous podcasts. The Civic Type R is technically
- 8:32a better car, but it's not as much fun.
- 8:35Yeah, yeah. And this car is fun.
- 8:37That car can be fast, as we know, and not be fun.
- 8:39And this car is fast enough and it is fun.
- 8:43And it's just, I mean, I was laughing.
- 8:45I mean, it was it, it brought me joy, right?
- 8:47It's, I want to say that house cleaning woman, right?
- 8:49I mean, this thing brought me joy.
- 8:50I'm not going to throw it out. It's Yeah.
- 8:52And I'm going to use it every day.
- 8:54You know, it's, it's good. It's very good.
- 8:56You have Marie Kondoed your garage, your ideal garage, and
- 9:00that would be part of it or that would be it.
- 9:02Yeah, it'd be amazing. Third car for me.
- 9:04Honestly, I don't know if I could.
- 9:05Well, I love that it's the option like that.
- 9:07It would give you the option. Like you said, there's not a lot
- 9:10of cars that could be A1 car solution.
- 9:12Yeah. And you know, and I'll be
- 9:14honest, I was not expecting the word sublime to be used to.
- 9:17Just neither was I. This is not the car I thought it
- 9:19was going to be. So what did you think leading up
- 9:22right? What was your You looked at the
- 9:23car, What did you think? Yeah, yeah.
- 9:25I don't love the way it looks. I think I probably prefer the
- 9:28looks of the Type R, to be honest.
- 9:30I'm probably, I've owned a Honda.
- 9:32I've never owned a Toyota. I think that Honda still
- 9:36probably has a better, you know, shift linkage and clutch feel
- 9:39and all that. One of the things I struggle a
- 9:41little bit with this car that does sort of fit into the the
- 9:44profile or the kind of car I thought it would be is that's a
- 9:46little, it's a little, like I said, a little tough to drive
- 9:48around town, right. With the clutch, you know, you
- 9:51get that sort of that Chuck, Chuck, Chuck sometimes if you're
- 9:53not just on it and in just the path of the clutch and all that
- 9:56sometimes makes it a little difficult if you're not on it to
- 9:59sort of get to get that arc. But I thought it was very much
- 10:02going to be an on off car, sort of a really feel like a tuner
- 10:06car, right? And thought it might not be the
- 10:09complete package. And I thought it would maybe
- 10:12feel a little heavy. Well, we all we've all driven,
- 10:14you know, career twos versus career fours or career 2.
- 10:17I mean, DD that's what is that 964?
- 10:19But but a career S, say versus a 4S or something, right?
- 10:23And you feel that weight in the front end and it's a different
- 10:25kind of car. Obviously there's not a there's
- 10:27not a rear wheel drive version of this car, but it it didn't
- 10:32carry that weight in the same weight was very balanced.
- 10:34I played around a little bit with the with the track setting
- 10:37and all that. Honestly, I think I prefer
- 10:38driving with a 5050 split. Maybe that's just how I started
- 10:42pushing it. But and I was on it.
- 10:44I mean, I was, I was on it and it was good And and like I said,
- 10:49much more a much more finished car I think than what I was
- 10:53expecting Dan and. Yeah, Lindsay, would you, would
- 10:56you ever consider one? I would love to drive one first.
- 11:00I feel like have to make an informed decision, obviously.
- 11:03And, you know, I'll never turn down the chance to drive
- 11:06something new. But I love the idea that it has
- 11:09a functional backseat because I could take my whole family and
- 11:13it sounds like even the dogs. So, you know, that's a big
- 11:16selling point for me. Like I've said before, that's
- 11:18one of the things that I really love about the X3 is like with
- 11:21it being a manual, in a lot of ways it's the best of both
- 11:24worlds because it's still an engaging driving experience.
- 11:26But I know I can take everybody in it.
- 11:28So yeah, I would definitely consider it.
- 11:32What about the noises, Ryan? The did you, the first time you
- 11:35heard it, do the dump valve thing?
- 11:37Yes yes, I think I texted you right away.
- 11:40You did this is so cool. I almost wish it were a little
- 11:43louder, right? That said, I had to turn the car
- 11:47off in car line at my daughter's school because it was it was a
- 11:50little I was a little boy racer, right?
- 11:53You know, most of. Your request or her request?
- 11:57She didn't want me to pick her up in the car.
- 11:59I did not get that request. She's she's cool with a Porsche,
- 12:03but you know, but I think you know the other kids know what
- 12:06that is right. I think this doesn't seem as
- 12:09special, right. No one really bad to deny, but I
- 12:13do love the way it sounds. I wish the red line was a little
- 12:15higher. I wish there was a little more
- 12:17sound in the cabin. I do love the blow off valve
- 12:19sounds. I mean, that's you know, it's,
- 12:22it's that's, that's a good, that's good stuff.
- 12:23I mean, and I know I now know why, you know, these kids in
- 12:26town and they're whatever WRX is that are tuned or these guys in
- 12:29their diesel pickup trucks or are making these sounds
- 12:32constantly because it's fun. But I think that if it were
- 12:37mine, this is a car that I think I probably would tune a little
- 12:40bit. You know, our buddy Johnny
- 12:41Lieberman has tuned his car to high heaven.
- 12:43He's done all sort of sorts of iterations, right, with, you
- 12:46know, conjunction with with aftermarket, you know, outfits
- 12:49and stuff. This does as good as it is, it
- 12:52does seem like a blank slate, probably unlike any other car
- 12:55I've ever driven, right? It seems like it's probably
- 12:57capable even of so much more as wonderful.
- 12:59This is as wonderful as it is in the canyons.
- 13:01It could use a little more smoothness, a little more grunt
- 13:04down low around town. It is kind of a clunky thing to
- 13:07drive like in stop and go traffic, right.
- 13:10That said, it's good enough where I you know, if I needed A1
- 13:13car solution, I could handle that and I would still have a
- 13:16lot of fun and and the weekends and in Colorado, it's all-wheel
- 13:18drive. Get yourself some snow tires.
- 13:20Done and done. This is your car.
- 13:22They're supposed to be amazing in car parks in the snow,
- 13:25obviously with snow tires, not with just summer tires.
- 13:29Is it snow in Seattle? Yeah, it does.
- 13:32It does occasionally and. When it does, you really need it
- 13:35high. Price from Ryan, yeah.
- 13:37Can I ask why you sold your car? And I know that it's not just
- 13:40the car. There are other factors.
- 13:41You made a move from Seattle. Do we have to keep talking about
- 13:44the fact I sold mine? Come on.
- 13:46This What if we promised this is the last time because I had the
- 13:49same question. OK.
- 13:51Oh, well, it was logistics, like I was moving down to states.
- 13:56Yeah, yeah, I had truck full of stuff to take down.
- 14:00I had the Audi, you know, I was going to be moving to LA, which
- 14:05is, it's probably not a great car for Lai mean, I know it's
- 14:08not right. That's the traffic that you get
- 14:10in LA. It would be a great weekend car
- 14:13in LA. Yeah.
- 14:15So yeah, I, I, it's, it's probably the one car I've owned
- 14:18I still think about quite regularly.
- 14:21And it, it was for me, it used to give me a little adrenaline
- 14:24rush sometimes. Just an injection adrenaline.
- 14:27It was, yeah. You drive it like an asshole,
- 14:29like, I mean, you just do, right?
- 14:31I mean it it, it, it goes you on to push it and.
- 14:33To. Make noises and into, you know,
- 14:36digging deep and, you know, around the corners and city
- 14:39streets and all this. I mean, it's just it, it really
- 14:41pushes you to, I don't know, to, to push it.
- 14:46You know, do we now have descriptions per car?
- 14:48Right, So last week it was. If you're driving the Mustang
- 14:51GT, you're a Dick head. If you're driving the Corolla,
- 14:54you're an asshole. You know what are you in the
- 14:57Porsche GT? Four.
- 14:58That's. I think we're developing a new
- 15:00scale and it's going to be an organic development.
- 15:03We'll just it'll be a living document, as they say.
- 15:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll see what happens.
- 15:09It's a great car, guys. I, I really, I, I would
- 15:11encourage anyone to go drive one, but, but make sure you, you
- 15:14take it out of the city, right? If you take it on a test drive,
- 15:16go and take it on a back Rd. You know, if you live somewhere
- 15:19where your commute is on some twisty roads, this is your car,
- 15:22right? This is not a stop and go
- 15:24traffic car because it's get it's a little frustrating, you
- 15:26know? Yeah, brakes are amazing.
- 15:30Yeah, brakes are fantastic. And you slotted rotors from the
- 15:32factory or that's kind of cool, right?
- 15:35How many miles did it have on it?
- 15:36Because the other thing for you right is the brakes were
- 15:38amazing, but it was a press car. Yes, yes, yeah.
- 15:42It had about 5900 miles when I got it.
- 15:44I've got about 6100 sixty 100 on it now in that first the first
- 15:49corner on the first Canyon when I laid into the brakes, I and I
- 15:52felt that shoved back. I was really impressed.
- 15:55You know, you both know this. You both have, you know,
- 15:56variations of the car. I do the Porsche where the the
- 15:59brakes are wonderful, but that you got to get into them right.
- 16:03And this car was a little more on off and you know, I don't
- 16:06know what's better, but it was different and gave me all the
- 16:09confidence in the world. Just it's it's it's a neat
- 16:13thing. I I just every kid in a tuned
- 16:17WRX, you know, gives you a nod, you know, I get.
- 16:20Kids respect you got. Kids respect, you know I need
- 16:24more. Hey, that is worth its weight in
- 16:26gold. And then you can throw out the
- 16:28hello fellow kids. Yeah, then they see the the
- 16:32white beard, right? But just in closing, a wonderful
- 16:35car, worth every penny, a wonderful, you know, only car
- 16:39solution for, for just about anyone unless you are really in
- 16:42stop and go traffic somewhere. Yeah, this is, this is hard to
- 16:45be. What else would you spend your
- 16:46$55,000 on? Right, on a new car.
- 16:49Yeah. Well, and Dan, I mean to Ryan's
- 16:51point, like you took yours on several Rd. trips, right?
- 16:55Yeah. And it were comfortable and you
- 16:57had fun and. Yeah, I I drove the the Civic
- 17:00Type R, which I think is really the only, I don't think I love
- 17:04Subaru, but I don't think the WRXTR is a competitor to it
- 17:08because I don't think it has enough horsepower.
- 17:10That's it, That's it. So I think it's the Civic Type R
- 17:13and you're going front wheel drive or the GR Corolla and
- 17:16you're going all-wheel drive. But yeah, it was.
- 17:18It's serious versus fun, and I always went for fun.
- 17:23Well, this is, I think, the one case where the all-wheel drive
- 17:25might be the more fun car, right?
- 17:27Yeah. So, yeah, you don't do that very
- 17:29often. Well, and I think has there been
- 17:32like Ryan, you mentioned, you know, it was, it was encouraging
- 17:37you to sort of take like even neighborhood roads safely, of
- 17:41course, but like take corners, you know, more spiritedly than
- 17:45you might in another car. Has there been another sort of
- 17:50sleeper car or a car that you guys weren't expecting to feel
- 17:54that way and that you caught like in the moment you were
- 17:57like, oh, I want to kind of be a little more spirited, like has
- 18:00there been another car that has made you feel that way?
- 18:02I think the only car that it can kind of draw a parallel to is
- 18:05the AMG, the CLA, is it the 53 or the 55?
- 18:11It's whatever the the top CLA and the CLA is a car that in
- 18:15lower trims isn't too impressive.
- 18:17And I wasn't, I didn't have high hopes, but I enjoy driving that
- 18:20more than the larger AMG's short of like the GT, right?
- 18:25That was another car that made me feel like a like a like and
- 18:28also, yeah, Hoon, you know? I think we have another.
- 18:31We have another notch on the scale.
- 18:34Guys, to be in a car, sorry, there's the last thing I'll say,
- 18:36but this car has got me kind of kind of excited.
- 18:38It's a it's a neat car. You know, not all cars you drive
- 18:42or get to driver like this, right?
- 18:44This car really has made an impression on me.
- 18:46And the fact that you can actually shift our Porsches, you
- 18:49know, you can take, what, first gear to 58 miles an hour or
- 18:52something. This is a car in town.
- 18:53I'm not just in 1st and 2nd gear all the time.
- 18:55And that's kind of fun too. Yeah.
- 18:57That is nice. Very good.
- 18:58Well, we talked last week about that coffee shop I discovered
- 19:02down in Malibu. Yeah, I'm gutted because I
- 19:04didn't go this week and. Go down.
- 19:07There, there was a zinger. It's just parked outside the
- 19:12coffee shop and also a Tuttle. 911 K Really.
- 19:15Yeah. So you talk about LA cars and
- 19:19you know, special cars. Like you don't see those
- 19:21anywhere, let alone a coffee. Shop.
- 19:23Yeah, yeah, huh. Yeah, that's a that's A2 car
- 19:27solution. It is indeed.
- 19:30So anyway, I need to get back there.
- 19:31I got to. I'm heading to Sema this week,
- 19:33but I need to get back to that coffee shop and see what else is
- 19:36going to be there. I saw the pictures over from the
- 19:40weekend and I thought, oh I really hope Dan was there
- 19:43because I want to hear what it was.
- 19:44Like, yeah, I wasn't, but it was interesting because also I saw
- 19:47that Larry Chen has just recently driven A Zinger.
- 19:50I saw that too, Larry. Could be, could have been,
- 19:53because it was the same one. Yeah, OK, yeah.
- 19:57Or another automotive journalist.
- 19:59So yeah. Yeah, he was posting some zinger
- 20:02content too, if I'm right that mistaken, So.
- 20:05We will have to investigate without making this all about
- 20:09Ryan. You went from one extreme to
- 20:12another because you went from a modern day, I guess hot hatch to
- 20:16an old school a Lamborghini. How was that?
- 20:21So I just submitted the article to Autoblog tonight.
- 20:24So hopefully by the time you are hearing this, the show the the
- 20:27article will be, we'll have posted as well.
- 20:31So this is a 1991 Diablo. So the second year I think it
- 20:34was of the Diablo. And for those in the know,
- 20:37apparently this is the one you want because it's early, you
- 20:39know later they you know, have more power all-wheel drive and
- 20:42all this. But but this is an early car.
- 20:44No electronic nannies. You know it's got those big 335
- 20:48series tires in the back, you know that look like rolling
- 20:50barrels. It is a so I don't want to give
- 20:54away too much of the article, but I likened it to what I call
- 20:57it a cigarette boat, right? All fiberglass and horsepower.
- 21:00And it really is that, you know, build quality isn't, you know,
- 21:04wasn't what it is now at Lamborghini, right?
- 21:08You know, we were driving in the analog clock in the dash decided
- 21:13to fly out upon acceleration. You know, I mean it's, it's it's
- 21:19little things like that that, but if you if you look past that
- 21:23stuff, it is a hell of a thing because as much as I love the
- 21:28Corolla GR, there is no power down low right to get in a car
- 21:32where all the power is down low right and then it just goes and
- 21:36goes and goes right up to red line.
- 21:38It's it's a great feeling. It's it's what all cars kind of
- 21:41used to feel like right in a way, obviously not like a
- 21:43Diablo, but all cars you used to have AV6 or AV8 and you know,
- 21:47and they would which is so much more tractable around town now.
- 21:50Now this car I barely fit in. Actually, I fit OK, I'll take
- 21:53that back. I fit in OK, I have plenty of
- 21:55headroom had the seat all the way back.
- 21:58You sit in and I don't know if you've driven a Diablo, either
- 22:02of you, but. Not yet.
- 22:04The the shoulder belt and the lap belt are are two different
- 22:07pieces. And so the shoulder belt you
- 22:10attach up by your shoulder and then the lap belt is like a
- 22:14standard lap belt, but you bring it from the center to the
- 22:16outside. And then you're presented with
- 22:18not one, but two receivers. And I don't know why there are
- 22:22two places to plug this lap belt and I have no idea because
- 22:25they're about two inches from one another.
- 22:27So I don't know if you know, it's like, you know, you let a
- 22:29little out at the waist, you know, after, you know,
- 22:31Thanksgiving or you know what that option is there for.
- 22:34That was odd. And the car is just filled with
- 22:36little peculiarities like that, right?
- 22:38Like why in the hell did they do it this way?
- 22:40Right where it could have, you know, one of you mentioned the
- 22:43simpler solution, right? Like, why are we complicating
- 22:46this? But that said, you know, you get
- 22:49in you, you turn the key, it's a dog leg first, which you know,
- 22:52you've got to sort of be paying attention to, but it roars to
- 22:55life and it's just, you know, nothing sounds like that car
- 22:58like or nothing, I should say nothing sounds like AV 12 right
- 23:01through a gated manual and it just goes and it's it's it's got
- 23:05manual steering. When was the last time you drove
- 23:08a car with manual steering, you know?
- 23:10It's been a little bit. I think the closest thing would
- 23:13I can liken it to would be a Lotus Elise with 2 1/2 times the
- 23:16horsepower. And that's really what it felt
- 23:19like. But everyone gives you a thumbs
- 23:21up. No one hates on this car, right?
- 23:24Like it it is, it is a it is an experience just to see it.
- 23:27You know, I, I had the feeling out driving around that most of
- 23:30the people seeing it probably never actually seen one in
- 23:33person. I go into detail in the article
- 23:34about the first time I tried to take the car out and it broke
- 23:37down and some of the characters we met along the way.
- 23:39But you know, everyone has thoughts on a Diablo and you
- 23:45know you, you drive it and it grows on you and you want one
- 23:48and you know it. These things are going for about
- 23:50250 grand right now. I don't know if it's where I put
- 23:54my 250 grand. But also, like a boat, it's
- 23:58really great when your friend has one, right?
- 24:00Just to say it sounding more like get a friend with a Diablo.
- 24:04That's I think that's the move. You know, I don't know anyone
- 24:08who has a Diablo as a second car even right.
- 24:10You know, it's like a fifth car or a sixth car, but what a good
- 24:13fifth car or sixth car It is. It is it's it's a tremendous
- 24:17thing. If you ever get a chance, do
- 24:19drive one, because I think by the time even the mercy Lago
- 24:22came around, it was a different car, right, probably for better,
- 24:26but a different car. And that Diablo was just a
- 24:28moment in time. Read the article for more
- 24:30because I kind of nerd out on it.
- 24:33It was. I will always remember the the
- 24:36video for Cosmic Girl or Jamiroquai where the car is
- 24:39racing and someone heard the story behind that is that
- 24:44someone had driven it and crushed it in some way where the
- 24:48windscreen got smashed. So if you actually watch the
- 24:51video, he's driving the car without a windscreen.
- 24:54Oh, interesting. Yeah, I.
- 24:56Don't want those little behind the scenes tidbits?
- 24:58Yeah. There we go.
- 24:58Yeah. But yeah, how do you fit in
- 25:00there with that hat? That's fine with the horns.
- 25:03Very carefully. Should have got the right stuff.
- 25:06Guys, it's it's amazing again and then I'll shut up.
- 25:09But drive one if you get a chance, just sit in it.
- 25:12Just just commune with it because they don't make cars
- 25:15like that. They hardly made them.
- 25:17Then it's a special. The car's got an edge.
- 25:21It is just it is, it is living. It is living.
- 25:24Driving What's next? Are you allowed to say?
- 25:27Yeah, I'll tell you what the space did here first.
- 25:31Well, maybe we get people to comment what should what?
- 25:33Should Ryan OK, because. The theme here, right, is that
- 25:36you're driving cars from your youth that were posters on your
- 25:40wall. Exactly.
- 25:41Poster cars. Yep.
- 25:42And you've already driven Cara GT?
- 25:44Yep. Diablo.
- 25:46Yep. What else 350-5355?
- 25:50Yeah, I guess that's that's just those 3.
- 25:53So we're talking 90s ish. Yeah, early 90s, you know.
- 25:57Yeah, Yeah. So let us.
- 25:58Know what Ryan should drive next?
- 26:00I guess the Courgy, yeah, group Courgy T came a little bit
- 26:03later, but that was, yeah, that's a forever car, right?
- 26:06So. Yeah, OK.
- 26:07We will watch this space and maybe you reveal next week
- 26:10what's next. He's going to be impressed.
- 26:12Yeah, Is it Italian? Give us one clue, one there.
- 26:15We go yes, yes it is. Well, it's not the F40 because I
- 26:19know that's in the shop, but we will see.
- 26:21The F40 is back baby. But.
- 26:25I'm not saying that's the one. No.
- 26:27But you're not saying it's not the one there's.
- 26:29Some other good ones in there too.
- 26:31Next week, next week. I thought based on we got a lot
- 26:35of good feedback last week about the VW comments we made.
- 26:38So I thought we would do a slightly different question for
- 26:41the group and hopefully you guys have done some research because
- 26:44I gave you the question in advance.
- 26:46I've got a wonderful question, wonderful answer, but I know
- 26:48that Ryan believes he's right, and I think Lindsay believes
- 26:51she's right. I mean, I obviously am.
- 26:54Yeah, someone. Else go first though I've done
- 26:56way, way too much talk. So let me give you the question
- 27:00and then we can discuss. So you've stolen Doc Brown's
- 27:05DeLorean and you decide to go back in time and visit a
- 27:09dealership during peak Porsche. So we're talking the best time
- 27:15to buy a Porsche. What year do you set the clock
- 27:18and why? And what is your justification
- 27:21for that year? So, Lindsay, do you want to?
- 27:23Go first yes. And I like I like that this that
- 27:29this, you know, scenario little thought experiment starts off
- 27:33with some light automotive crime with an icon and Hollywood and
- 27:38cars. I really appreciate it.
- 27:42And so my where the year that I'm setting the clock to is 1973
- 27:49because I would like to go back and see the 2.7 liter Rs in
- 27:54dealership because I, I don't know what it was like at the
- 27:59time when that car came out. I think most of us would agree
- 28:03that if you had to pick like the Porsche, that is one of the top
- 28:06contenders. So I think it'd be really
- 28:08fascinating to see that in the moment it was introduced and
- 28:13kind of see it in real time, knowing the sort of legend, you
- 28:18know, I don't know if legend is the right word, but knowing how
- 28:22it is thought of today and how revered it is, I think it'd be
- 28:26really interesting to sort of see where that started.
- 28:30Does Doc Brown's car have a trailer hitch?
- 28:33It does now. He's very clever.
- 28:37Yeah. Imagine, like at the time, I
- 28:40wonder if people knew what they were looking at when they walked
- 28:43in because sometimes some of these cars, these, these
- 28:46legendary cars, at the time, they're not considered
- 28:49legendary. And even to a point where
- 28:50sometimes they don't even sell a lot of.
- 28:52Right. People are like, what is this?
- 28:54I don't want it. Why would you ever?
- 28:55And then, you know, decades later they're like, wait, that
- 28:58was the peak or that was the penultimate or you know, I mean,
- 29:00I think I may be misremembering, but I think there was a little
- 29:04bit of that with the 959 because it was such a huge technological
- 29:08achievement, but it was different and people were kind
- 29:09of like, you know, it takes like people need a moment to process
- 29:14it. So I'd be curious, obviously it
- 29:16wasn't wouldn't be the same as it is now, but were there people
- 29:21that like recognized it for what it was at the time or was it
- 29:24sort of a sleeper? And like only with hindsight, we
- 29:27look back and realize what a big deal it was.
- 29:30So I would love to, you know, see that in action.
- 29:34Nice. I don't feel like.
- 29:37Going sorry, I was just going to say I don't know that the 73 Rs
- 29:40was nearly as appreciated in time and period as it is now.
- 29:43And in fact, I, I, I seem to recall some stories about, you
- 29:47know, these cars sitting, you know, other things.
- 29:50Yeah, tomfoolery to to sell the things.
- 29:53I would not be surprised if that was the case.
- 29:55That's why I think it'd be, yeah.
- 29:56Like. You know, that would be my guess
- 29:59and I think it'd be interesting to to especially because if you
- 30:02could walk into a dealer and see one with the benefit of knowing
- 30:06what we know and just be like, this is wild.
- 30:08And I kind of have this amazing secret and nobody knows.
- 30:12Yeah, yeah. And you think what else was in a
- 30:14Porsche dealership in 73 was it would have been a 9/14, right?
- 30:19Yeah. Obviously you're 911.
- 30:21Was the 912 still being made in 70?
- 30:24No, probably not. But maybe when did the 928 come
- 30:28out? Well, that would have been.
- 30:30Don't know. I'm going to look that up
- 30:32because now I want to know. We can ask our research.
- 30:33Our research assistant. So that was 77, I would have
- 30:38guessed earlier. Yeah, OK, interesting.
- 30:41But, you know, right around the corner, you know, interesting.
- 30:44It's a great answer because, I mean, I think that the general
- 30:46lineup was also pretty solid, right, Right.
- 30:50Except for those 9 fourteens, but you've come around on this.
- 30:53High. Yeah.
- 30:54Very high, Ryan, what are you going with?
- 30:56Let's hear the next right. Answer Well, I'm glad you went
- 30:58further back than I did, but I knew right away what year, and
- 31:04for me it's 2011 because think about 2011.
- 31:10So 2011. If you know, you know, your
- 31:12Porsche history was sort of in the end of the 997 and you were,
- 31:16you were in the right in the middle of the point twos, right,
- 31:18the dot twos. And, and you know, I'm really
- 31:21realizing that those are really my favorite modern Porsches.
- 31:24You know, our pal Tom Moran just took delivery of his Rs 4.0 and
- 31:28you know, being in that thing like that is that is it that is
- 31:31the alpha and the Omega that is the car that said, you know, the
- 31:34lesser 990 sevens are equally wonderful.
- 31:36It's just the right size, you've got the right visibility.
- 31:38They're just fantastic. And the, and the point twos for
- 31:41me with the GT3 and all that, it's really when it sort of came
- 31:44together for me. So, so 2011 was an interesting
- 31:47year because you were really at the end of the nine and seven,
- 31:50you know, the 99 on the corner. But you had some wonderful
- 31:54models outside of that GT34-O because you had the Turbo S that
- 31:59was just made, I think for 2011 and 2012, which is an
- 32:02exceptional, exceptional thing. And I think buy one now because
- 32:06those are only going to go up and up and up.
- 32:08The GTS, we often forget about the GTS.
- 32:11The 997.2911 GTS, that was a neat car, had the center lock
- 32:15wheels. I think it had 385 horse.
- 32:19No, that was the standard. I think it had close to 400
- 32:22horsepower. That was a really, really cool
- 32:24car too. You could get a four, you could
- 32:26get a cab. That was another one.
- 32:29Also the GT2 Rs, I believe that was right about that time.
- 32:33I may be off a couple years. We talked about those Volkswagen
- 32:35things. It was overwhelmingly positive,
- 32:39but we also had a lot of people correcting us.
- 32:40Oh, well, that car came out one year before, one year after.
- 32:43So, but that was at the, you know, in the mix at the time for
- 32:45sure, you know, but that, but that was that was it for me.
- 32:49That was the first year of the of the second Gen.
- 32:52Cayenne as well. 2011 is when that was introduced, you could
- 32:55get a diesel, right? That was a that was a great year
- 32:59for Porsche, right? And, and so 2011 for me, if I
- 33:03could do a George Costanza and make a bed under John Dicey's
- 33:06best, just soak all that in the 2011 in for a day or two, I'd do
- 33:11it because I keep coming back to that time.
- 33:13Those are my favorite modern Porsches.
- 33:15And it's not like Volkswagen. It's not like we've really
- 33:19fallen. I just think we were really,
- 33:21really focused in 2011. So, well, like you said, that
- 33:25would have been like, I wonder how many other times in the
- 33:27history of the company there were so many models at the same
- 33:31time that would have held your interest.
- 33:34You know, given that it's our like, what's interesting for us?
- 33:37Yeah, that'd be interesting to know for sure.
- 33:39All right, Dan. Well, initially I was going to
- 33:44go for 1995 because I was actually doing an internship at
- 33:49Porsche at the time in the. UK.
- 33:52And we launched the turbo and the 4S at the same time, but
- 33:57I've not gone for that. I want to take you further back
- 34:02and it's around 198687. OK.
- 34:07You are walking into the dealership, you get hit by a big
- 34:12wave of Cologne like someone's wearing like Old Spice or
- 34:17something, right? With a you know, the slick back
- 34:19sales guy you walk in is. He sniffing a little bit.
- 34:24Is it it? Could be he's got white powder
- 34:26coming from his nose. Right.
- 34:28I appreciate that you're setting the stage with so much detail.
- 34:31It's. Kind of like everyone.
- 34:32Remember why it's like smell O vision.
- 34:34Yeah, you are looking like Joey from Friends.
- 34:39You're wearing your Porsche hat, your Porsche jacket, everything
- 34:43that says I own a Porsche. Even though you don't own a
- 34:46Porsche. You've got the world's biggest
- 34:49telephone. So you're walking in with a
- 34:51mobile phone that is bigger than a brick.
- 34:54Yeah, and. Yeah, early adopter.
- 34:59Yeah, not having to worry about Adm.
- 35:02This is way before everyone thought about, hey, we can, we
- 35:05can con people out even more money.
- 35:08So there's no Adm or any of the cars.
- 35:10Well, they were struggling a little bit even, right?
- 35:12Yeah, yeah. So you walk in front of the tow
- 35:15room and you see the 9/11 turbo convertible and it's just in
- 35:23guards red. You know, there weren't multiple
- 35:25colors. You pretty much had like 5
- 35:27colors to pick from and there it is like and it's on a turntable
- 35:31and it's kind of going around. Fuchs wheels?
- 35:33Are we talking Fuchs wheels? What are we talking BBS?
- 35:36OK, Fuchs alloys, you know, dark hard talk.
- 35:39A dark convertible cover and the big wing on the back.
- 35:43The whale tail. Remember the whale tail.
- 35:47And then you realize you can't afford it.
- 35:50But what you do walk away with is you walk away with a
- 35:53brochure. Back then, brochures were
- 35:56amazing. Like you would get these
- 35:59brochures that had so much love and attention gone into them and
- 36:03they would give them out if you were lucky.
- 36:05So you could get this brochure of the car and you'd walk away
- 36:07and you're like, hey, I don't own the car, but I've just had a
- 36:09great experience. And then you have one more piece
- 36:12of memorabilia where you're like, obviously I've been to the
- 36:16dealership because I have this. Yes, that's a Goodyear, Dean.
- 36:21I thought maybe going to say you walk away at a 944 of some
- 36:24variety. Maybe yeah, you can't afford.
- 36:26It that was your consolation? Or the 928 you've just bought
- 36:29the 9028, it's been traded in. That's that's right.
- 36:32That would have had a sticker price even higher maybe than
- 36:34that. I don't have to look that up,
- 36:35but but yeah, that those that was, you know, I we talk about,
- 36:40you know, what cars mean and what they symbolize and, you
- 36:42know, and, and, you know, aspirational cars and all that.
- 36:46And I think for a lot of us, that would have been the car
- 36:49that really was on our radar or on our wall.
- 36:52You know, that was definitely Wall St. bro.
- 36:55You know what was the movie with Wall Street?
- 36:59It was Wall Street. But I mean, it was literally
- 37:01well. You set it up right?
- 37:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:04Shiny suits and all that. And I've told this story before.
- 37:08We had a neighbor that it wasn't a convertible, but he had a
- 37:10turbo right at about that same time, black silver BBS wheels
- 37:14seemed to have more than one girlfriend and was he was, he
- 37:20was swinging bachelor for sure. And, you know, you know, we were
- 37:24driving minivans or whatever at the time.
- 37:25And and and, you know, that car was just in such contrast to
- 37:29what we were driving, what most people were driving in my town.
- 37:31I mean, that guy, you know, he had it figured out and that I I
- 37:36think that's when those cars really the people maybe that
- 37:39were driving those cars really changed from, you know, who had
- 37:42driven Porsches historically, right?
- 37:45Yeah, Yeah. That was a, that was a time of
- 37:48transition for Porsche for sure. And I, I would argue that we've
- 37:51continued to almost sort of carry that, yeah, that in that
- 37:54same direction in a way. Was that was that Gordon Gecko?
- 38:00Gordon Gecko. That's I was.
- 38:01Like yeah, the best name, but I couldn't think of who it was.
- 38:04I had to check as well because I remember that there was a
- 38:06Porsche in weird science. Did you guys ever see weird?
- 38:09Science. Oh yeah, I.
- 38:10Think it was a nine 28100% at 9:11 so.
- 38:14In a Mondeal, I think, right? Wasn't it a foreign deal as
- 38:17well? Yeah, yeah.
- 38:18I love that movie. That's a great, that's a great
- 38:21call back. That was it.
- 38:24The reference, yeah, but let us know if you agree or disagree
- 38:28with us. Let us know what you think in
- 38:30the comments. Was peak Porsche.
- 38:32Is it? Have we completely missed the
- 38:33mark? Or did Lindsay get it right?
- 38:36Or did Ryan get it right? Or did I get it close to right
- 38:39but couldn't actually buy the car?
- 38:43I got the brochure. I got the.
- 38:44Yeah, I like that you threw a curveball in.
- 38:47Yeah. The journalists of the world
- 38:50seem to be an uproar and I don't really understand why.
- 38:53So I think GM have recently announced that they're no longer
- 38:57going to be supporting CarPlay or the Google equivalent.
- 39:03And there's been lots of different journalists
- 39:05complaining about this. I've seen it on LinkedIn, I've
- 39:07seen it on Instagram. And I guess my question to you
- 39:11guys is, would we actually care if we still had navigation?
- 39:16We still had the ability to skip through music?
- 39:19Like would you miss CarPlay now? Yes and no, because I think
- 39:24you're right. If you still have all the
- 39:25features available, it's really nice.
- 39:27But I think there is, you know, we get used to a certain system
- 39:31and I think there's a universality to Google or not
- 39:35Android Auto, but CarPlay, you know, for me, and just knowing
- 39:40that you can, it's like going to Starbucks, you know what you're
- 39:43going to get, you know, And so if you get into a car and, you
- 39:46know, you can get in, if it's got car play, you already can
- 39:49just start using it without having to learn it.
- 39:51Yeah. So there's that part of it.
- 39:52But, you know, I would hope that whatever they're moving towards
- 39:56is relatively intuitive. And so pretty quickly you'd be
- 40:00up and running. So I think I'd get over it.
- 40:03Yeah, right. Yeah, I think I'm actually a
- 40:06case study because, you know, we have this pole star and it was
- 40:08the first car that we'd had I guess that where where Apple
- 40:13Play wasn't automatic. And what I mean by that is it
- 40:15has Apple Play, but Apple Play isn't wireless.
- 40:18You've got a plug in through the USB and so you just got in the
- 40:21habit of not using it. And so Polestar, Volvo, whatever
- 40:26has their own version, which is no less good, does all the same
- 40:31stuff. And we've just gotten in the
- 40:33habit, I guess of of using that. You know, it's got its own
- 40:37navigation, all that. So I don't miss it.
- 40:39I've never felt inclined to go get a cord to plug in the phone
- 40:42so I could use Apple Play. There's nothing that Apple Play,
- 40:45I don't think offhand can do that that their proprietary
- 40:49system doesn't. That said, when I bought my
- 40:52portion, I bought the GT 4, you know, I wasn't going to pay for
- 40:56portion navigation, right? So that was a workaround for me
- 40:59to be able to plug in again. You've got to plug it in, but
- 41:02you know, it just I've gotten in the habit and, and, and I use it
- 41:05there, right, play music and the the few times I listen to music
- 41:08in the car. So I, I don't know, I think at
- 41:10one time it would have been more important to me.
- 41:12I'm a Mac guy, you know, I iPhone, you know, MacBook,
- 41:15whatever, but I, I, I don't know that it's as important as it
- 41:19used to be. I think it's time as they never
- 41:21really well, they take that back.
- 41:23I think recently they did push it forward, but for the longest
- 41:26time it never really changed, right.
- 41:28So I don't know. I wouldn't lose any sleep over
- 41:31it. Dan, you.
- 41:33It's a weird one. I like I I guess the only thing
- 41:36I would miss is sometimes I will use Siri so I will.
- 41:42Be like hey. Siri text blah blah blah or Hey
- 41:45Siri navigate me to here or Hey Siri, you know what was the
- 41:49score in the soccer or the football and my Siri is now
- 41:52going off but. Too much than I do for you.
- 41:56Yeah, it's it's listening too much.
- 41:59I I actually begrudge the fact that my car has car play but
- 42:03doesn't have wireless car play. That's what I want because I
- 42:06just had a McCann loaner for 24 hours and that you didn't even
- 42:10have to plug in and it's like it looks like the same, you know,
- 42:14screen. It looks like come on, Porsche,
- 42:16just sort it out so. It's so close, right?
- 42:20Yeah, yeah. But I think as long as I had my
- 42:21music and as long as I had clear navigation, I don't care what
- 42:25platform it is. Yeah.
- 42:27Yeah, I think well and so I saw that they were discontinuing it,
- 42:30but I haven't seen the comments. Can you share like what some of
- 42:33the complaints were with the people that were upset about it
- 42:36going away? We'd.
- 42:36Have to go dig them up. What do?
- 42:40I imagine it's something along the lines of, you know, what
- 42:44does it cost? You know, like, why do you know,
- 42:46why not just keep it going right?
- 42:48I mean, what is this pennies or you, you know, it's something
- 42:50we've always used or it's, I think the argument for probably
- 42:54a lot of people is that generally it's going to work
- 42:57right like. Yeah.
- 42:59And well and like you said or like Dan was saying, the
- 43:02interface with your phone is pretty handy like to being able
- 43:05to use Siri. But I think, I mean, my guess
- 43:07would be it's data-driven because I used to work for a
- 43:10company that was providing the like our system and it was a car
- 43:18play competitor, but the OEMs owned all the data.
- 43:22And that was one of the complaints about Apple and
- 43:25Google is that if they plug that into their cars, you get the
- 43:30universal functionality, but they don't get the visibility
- 43:33into the user data. So the appeal of using their own
- 43:37platform or working with a company that has built one, they
- 43:41get to see all of their user data, which is invaluable to
- 43:44them. So that that would be my guess,
- 43:46it's a. Good.
- 43:47I've got so I'm connected to a few car journalists on LinkedIn
- 43:51and this is Yuri. So if you don't know Yuri, he's
- 43:54one of the hosts of the Straight Pipes, which is a very
- 43:57successful YouTube channel. Yuri and Jacob.
- 44:01Hey, and we're going for a drive.
- 44:03That's their channel and Yuri has said GM getting rid of
- 44:08CarPlay and Android Auto across all models in the future.
- 44:11Dang big mistake. Someone please control Z this
- 44:16real quick. That's.
- 44:17Clever. Yeah, he's clearly not happy
- 44:19about it. You know what pisses me off
- 44:21more, if I may, is, you know my one complaint about this GR
- 44:26Corolla? It's got a charging pad that
- 44:28doesn't do a damn thing. You can get it just so 2 seconds
- 44:31later the light starts flashing. I I've taken the case off, I've
- 44:34taken the put the case on. I've tried my new whatever
- 44:37iPhone 17, whatever this is, I've tried an old iPhone.
- 44:39It doesn't do squat. You know other cars, they seem
- 44:43to either work or not work. To me that's a much more
- 44:45important feature, and especially if you've got
- 44:48wireless properly right, you need to have that charger.
- 44:51Yeah, that's true. Well, those are.
- 44:53Warm. Yeah, phone warmer, right?
- 44:55No, you're right. Yeah, exactly.
- 44:57I mean, how else is your phone supposed to stay warm in the
- 44:59winter? But that's one of those things
- 45:01where you see it and you get excited because you're like, oh,
- 45:03the ES. And then to have it not work, it
- 45:05feels like doubly frustrating because you're like, I was
- 45:07promised this amazing thing and now not only is it here, but it
- 45:11doesn't work. And there are plenty of cars
- 45:13that do it just fine. You can throw that phone,
- 45:15however, and it charges and others.
- 45:16You got to get it just right. In fact, I got so frustrated I
- 45:19went into the GR forums, which I know is not where you want to go
- 45:22for 1000 reasons, right? And the solution seems to be
- 45:27take some foam core. In fact, you could download a
- 45:30template. You take this foam core and you
- 45:32fit it in the in this in this tray and it holds your phone in
- 45:36just the precise position to charge.
- 45:39So it's a position thing, I guess.
- 45:40But I don't want a piece of foam core hold my car.
- 45:44I mean, come on. Like, I love that there's a
- 45:47solution, but it's like, yeah, that that cheapens it a little
- 45:51bit. Janky is the word.
- 45:52Yeah, I. Love the fact that Ryan was so
- 45:55frustrated by this he went on to the GR forums.
- 45:59For a car that he's going to have for a week, Yeah.
- 46:02But that tells you how bad it was.
- 46:03Yeah. Or how frustrated.
- 46:05You have this car. How long?
- 46:07I may not give this one back, but I've had it for three days.
- 46:11Now we know. That's why he's on the forum on.
- 46:12The TR Corolla. My driveway has a gate.
- 46:15Come get me Toyota. I like this thing.
- 46:17I like it a lot except for that. It's like before I decide
- 46:20whether I'm returning the keys or not, or attempting to keep
- 46:23them, let me see if I can fix this charging pad thing.
- 46:25And now that I have oops, can't find the keys.
- 46:28That's it would stop. Your phone is always out of
- 46:30charge, just buy a damn cable. I like the sleek look intended
- 46:36by the designers. Thank you there.
- 46:38We go you don't want to spoil their aesthetics.
- 46:40I'm not an Uber driver, at least not yet.
- 46:42So I think we should probably mention very briefly that last
- 46:46week we announced a competition and you could win another
- 46:51Sheffield Watch. We're not going to tell you how
- 46:53on this episode, but if you listen to last week's episode,
- 46:56we were very clear on how you could win it.
- 46:59But we've already had some good entries.
- 47:00So thank you to everyone that's given us and it's people that we
- 47:04don't know in their amazing comments.
- 47:05So thank you very. Much that's.
- 47:06Right, the competition is heating up too.
- 47:10I think you just sort of let on to how to do it.
- 47:12But let's say, let's say that. Yeah.
- 47:17It was a good hint, like what is Ryan going to be driving next?
- 47:20It was a solid hint, but you got to go listen to the episode.
- 47:23Yeah, listen to the last week's episode and the best of luck in
- 47:27entering the competition. Yes.
- 47:29The episode was called Milking It and we are milking it.
- 47:31There you go. Funny, funny, funny.
- 47:35That car show is proud to partner with Drake Motor Cars.
- 47:39Drake Motor Cars is Denver's premier destination for exactly
- 47:42the kinds of vehicles that we like here at that car show.
- 47:45Think Velocity Broncos, Audi Rs Sixes, Acura NSXS, and air
- 47:50cooled Porsches. You can see they're complete and
- 47:53constantly changing inventory at drakemotorcars.com and check out
- 47:57their amazing online reviews from all across the country.
- 48:01But our friends at Drake need your specialty car too.
- 48:03A sign of a good business is when there are more customers
- 48:06than inventory. So reach out to Drake too, if
- 48:08you've got a great enthusiast car that just doesn't get driven
- 48:11like it used to. Find out more at
- 48:13drakemotorcars.com and let them know you heard about them on
- 48:17that car show. The NSX is coming back, and I
- 48:21don't mean the new old NSX, I mean the original, the one that
- 48:25was worked on by Senna and it is coming back via Pinum Farina,
- 48:30which is a bit weird because I don't know.
- 48:31Did Pinum Farina design the original NSA I've.
- 48:33Never heard that but. I do not think so, but I could
- 48:36be corrected. And a company called Jazz
- 48:39Motorsport, OK, and they're going to use existing chassis.
- 48:44So this is a common trick. Singer do it.
- 48:47The guys at HWA, the effects that do Mercedes, essentially,
- 48:52if you're using an old chassis, you get to use the VIN from that
- 48:55chassis. So technically it's not a new
- 48:58car. Technically you don't have to
- 49:00crush it. You don't have to put it through
- 49:01safety tests. You know, you're already kind of
- 49:04starting ahead of the game, if you will.
- 49:06But they're going to put carbon fiber bodies of the NSX body on
- 49:12top of these old chassis. Is that something that appeals?
- 49:16What's the price point? Yeah, I I can't see them being
- 49:20less than half a million. I know.
- 49:22And at that price, no, not really did they make.
- 49:25I mean we talked about Singer and how they're going to vacuum
- 49:27up all the 96 fours, but they did make a lot of 96 fours even
- 49:30though they made relatively few 96 fours, you know, versus all
- 49:33of 9/11 production. But what are we talking with NSX
- 49:35numbers? Because I never, you know, I
- 49:38don't remember seeing a ton of NSF NSX's back in the day
- 49:41somewhere. NSX is a car week this year than
- 49:43it had up to, you know, that point in my life.
- 49:46I just, I wonder how big that pool is.
- 49:48Obviously they're not, you know, going to go through too many of
- 49:51them, but you can still get a good NSX, right for 400 grand,
- 49:57maybe a little bit less. 100 grand, yeah.
- 50:00So the the coupe is so obviously they started in the 90s the
- 50:05coupons. In. 1990 They made about 9009.
- 50:101000. They then went to the Targa mid
- 50:1290s and they made 8 1/2 thousand.
- 50:16And then they were like special editions like the Type R, which
- 50:21were very much less than 500 each time.
- 50:24So, you know, there's, there's, I guess there's what, 1415
- 50:28thousand chassis out. There, yeah, they made them for
- 50:30a long time. Potentially like for the ones
- 50:33that have survived to the state, yeah.
- 50:35So carbon bodies, I assume there's some some meddling with
- 50:40the with the motors and. Transmission and suspension.
- 50:45Yeah, yeah, I'm sure they're wonderful.
- 50:49But again, you know, we've talked about this before if
- 50:50you've got a half $1,000,000 to spend.
- 50:53Right. Is that where you're going to
- 50:54put it? Yeah.
- 50:56Well, I feel like it's, but again, it's that would be like a
- 50:59fifth car maybe. Or maybe I just need to be
- 51:02friends with someone who has it as a fifth or sixth car.
- 51:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love the NSX, the original
- 51:08NSX, the the newer one didn't really hit me until about the
- 51:11Type S or whatever late in the game, but that original NSX is a
- 51:14truly beautiful car. I've never driven one, but you
- 51:19know, all of a sudden they just, they just are really, really
- 51:23appealing to me, right? Just at the same time, right,
- 51:25Like, you know, the the prices are going up, but they're
- 51:28wonderful. I do wonder if I'd want more
- 51:29power, but it's not nothing. It's just time that you have
- 51:34more taste. Let's.
- 51:36Try yeah, I don't know, it's it's I, I, I I'd almost rather
- 51:41have just a really good original and then money for, you know,
- 51:45for other cars or. Something.
- 51:46Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards too.
- 51:48I got to sit in an original and it was really cool and they're
- 51:53very unique. Obviously, if you've gotten to
- 51:55get up close, you know that. So I would love to drive one,
- 51:57but I think if I was in the market for one, I would be
- 52:00looking for just a good example of an original.
- 52:03Yeah. I sat in the there's a really
- 52:05limited edition Type R and it wasn't available in North
- 52:08America and it was only available in Europe and Japan.
- 52:12But the two things that struck me with that is the seating
- 52:15position was too high. So you couldn't like even
- 52:20someone who's maybe, I don't know, half a foot, I don't know,
- 52:24someone shorter than me wouldn't be able to drive it with a
- 52:26helmet on. OK.
- 52:29The seating position was just too high.
- 52:31And were they? Was it a different seating
- 52:33position than just the regular ones?
- 52:35Yeah, it's like a proper sports seat, like a proper race seat,
- 52:39like a fixed part. Yeah, it has the smallest gear
- 52:42knob of any car I've ever seen. So I challenge anyone to show me
- 52:47a smaller gear knob than than the NSA.
- 52:51In 3rd jokes here our. Next contest.
- 52:54Yeah, which was amazing. You could always just use two
- 52:58fingers and enter the gear like it was not.
- 53:02Yeah, it was not conducive to, you know, proper shifting.
- 53:06Interesting. OK, yeah, no more jokes on that
- 53:09one. Just let this one go, yeah?
- 53:13Yeah, it needed, I don't know, it needed car Viagra moving
- 53:19carefully on. That car show is not sponsored
- 53:22by Bluetooth, but we are open to discussions.
- 53:24Yes, yeah. Well, I was thinking if we can
- 53:26get a few more sponsors and we're obviously very grateful
- 53:29for the sponsors we have and maybe we could buy a group GR
- 53:32Corolla and pull it between them.
- 53:35You know, we'll keep it in LA, let's say, because that's
- 53:38geographically the the nearest from Seattle, from Denver and
- 53:42from Orange County. Right.
- 53:44When you look at, yeah, critical mass, that's the most central
- 53:47and we're happy to wrap it in a blue tube livery should they be
- 53:49interested there. We go, right?
- 53:52Yeah. Let us know if you want to
- 53:53sponsor us and help us get closer to a company car.
- 53:56This sort of lozenge shaped a question for you.
- 53:59If we were to do that, what would the vanity plate read?
- 54:03Depends on the sponsor, isn't it?
- 54:05Yeah. Yeah, because you can get, they
- 54:08did a limited like Johnny's got one.
- 54:10The blue is really limited edition, like it was only
- 54:13available in like one or two years.
- 54:14I see. I want to say it was just the
- 54:16first year. Yeah, and it was a refresh back
- 54:19to they did it on the normal Corolla for like 1 year.
- 54:21OK, so you could do that and then have blue chew BLUCHEW.
- 54:27Yeah, it's yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:31Our phone lines are open. You, I think you've got more
- 54:34letters and numbers in California.
- 54:36We've only got 6. Yeah, we have 7 in California.
- 54:39That makes it a little tougher, but is.
- 54:40That so symmetrical can't read as well in Denver.
- 54:45They're all you know. The vision's a little blurry.
- 54:47You. Know they're like, listen, the
- 54:48comprehension cut off is 6. We're we're capping it,
- 54:52otherwise they're gonna be too overwhelmed.
- 54:55Yeah, I'm just grateful when I see a license plate on a car in
- 54:57Colorado. And if you live here, you know
- 54:58exactly what I mean. So yeah, what's that?
- 55:01What's that Instagram account? Is it Plates of Destiny or?
- 55:05So urban under score plates I think.
- 55:07Under score Plates of Destiny better.
- 55:09Yeah, perhaps we should set up Plates of Destiny.
- 55:12So it's like a Mormon thing. It comes with a magic wand and
- 55:15its own spaceship, and once you reach a certain level, you get a
- 55:19you get a robe. Shoot Harry Potter and the
- 55:22Plates of Destiny. There we go.
- 55:24Harry learns to drive. That's the that's the
- 55:26unpublished secret secret sequel or whatever.
- 55:29Yeah, it's. The new JK Rowling book Harry.
- 55:32Works on a plate. What have you guys got coming
- 55:35up? Can you share or anything?
- 55:36Sure. Ryan, what do you oh, I, I'm,
- 55:40I'm looking forward to the LA Auto Show, which is going to be
- 55:43here before we know it. I'm looking forward to getting
- 55:47your impressions of SEMA. I have not been but once, and
- 55:50that was a couple of years ago. It was overwhelming.
- 55:53If you're really, really lucky, you can take the Boring
- 55:55Company's underground Tesla. Oh.
- 55:58That's right. Whatever you call it, yeah, it's
- 56:01super exciting, the reason they call it the Boring Company.
- 56:04But there's that. And yeah, I'm just curious to
- 56:08get your take because there are halls and halls of dent pulling
- 56:14equipment and, you know, yeah, terrible Chrome wheels and
- 56:21polishing machines and yeah, so you name it, make sure you get a
- 56:25map because you want to go to the right places unless you're
- 56:28into that kind of thing. You want to see like the new
- 56:29cars. You want to see the concepts you
- 56:31want to see. Well, in the builds, the like
- 56:33crazy city builds, that's. It Is there a Tori VW in there?
- 56:38No, not this year. Not this.
- 56:40Year, then we get his legacy carries through.
- 56:43Right, exactly. I mean, I feel like there's a,
- 56:45you know, the spirit of Tories builds will be at all these
- 56:48events. Hopefully he's inspiring other
- 56:51other builds. Hopefully.
- 56:52But yeah. So Dan, do you know what you're
- 56:54going to be doing there? I haven't been either and I'm
- 56:56really curious to hear what you think.
- 56:58I don't know. I'm very grateful to the folks.
- 57:00They've given me a media pass so nice because, you know, they
- 57:04changed the model a couple of years ago.
- 57:06So it used to be that you had to be in the industry to go.
- 57:09Right. And now they've changed the
- 57:11model so there's one day that's open to the public and they do a
- 57:13nice festival and live bands and all that sort of good stuff.
- 57:18But I don't think I'm going to be around for that because I
- 57:20think that's the Friday and that's the day I drive back from
- 57:22Vegas. You'll have a great time.
- 57:25I'm looking forward to seeing lots of friends making
- 57:27connections. Already had a few party invites
- 57:31so it's all about networking and having a little bit of fun.
- 57:37Right. And that's the way to do it.
- 57:39So what are you the most? What are you most looking
- 57:41forward to? It's just the builds I think,
- 57:43you know, Yeah, you see occasionally on Bring a Trailer
- 57:46or something, the egg Sema build, and you know, this is
- 57:49always after the fact, whereas you're going to be seeing it
- 57:51first hand. They'll be announced and
- 57:53launched at the show. Yeah, yeah, do.
- 57:56You think Lindsay is that right? I haven't.
- 57:58And every year I see the pictures and I think, OK, next
- 58:01year I have to get there because I, I don't remember if it was
- 58:04last year or the year before, but there were, it seemed like
- 58:07more trucks than usual. Or I think there was like a
- 58:09special truck theme or something.
- 58:11And some of those builds, like between the size of the wheels,
- 58:16you know, the intricacies, the size of the tires, and then the
- 58:19intricacies of the paint jobs and the, you know, accessories,
- 58:25it was just like, really a feast for the eyes.
- 58:27So I'm curious. For the people.
- 58:29Right. So I'm curious to hear what it's
- 58:32like, you know, for real, Dan, what you think?
- 58:34And do we know if you're staying at the Drift Hotel yet?
- 58:37I think I am staying at the Drift Hotel.
- 58:40Unfortunately, I'll be driving there and back in a brand new
- 58:44F-150 Tremor. So I will let you guys know.
- 58:48Lindsay, that's the car of the Pacific Northwest, maybe?
- 58:51Or right. It's certainly a potential dream
- 58:55car for me, so I'm curious to hear what you think.
- 58:58Yeah, All right. You be careful, Dan.
- 59:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:04Have all the fun. And a marvelous time.
- 59:07Yeah, absolutely nice. Yeah, Big thank you to Ford for.
- 59:11Yeah, that's awesome. I'm jealous.
- 59:13Very kind of them. And yeah, I'll let you know
- 59:15opinions and yeah, I'm excited to because this is like 1 down
- 59:19from the Raptor, but it's also off road worthy in terms of, you
- 59:24know, it's not, you know, one of the the the builds that they
- 59:27have that is kind of less is more on road.
- 59:30This is off road. So it's going to be exciting
- 59:33are. You going to be able to get out
- 59:34into the desert at all? Maybe, maybe, maybe before.
- 59:39We'll see. And Lindsay, what are you up to?
- 59:44You're going to. Do a defender event.
- 59:45Am I allowed to talk about that or do we hold on that tool?
- 59:49Yes, I will be doing a defender event, so stay tuned for
- 59:52stories. I would anticipate there's going
- 59:54to be some more off roading, which I love and the defenders
- 59:57are just oh so capable of doing and yeah.
- 1:00:00So I'm looking forward to sharing that with you guys.
- 1:00:03That'll be fun, since the driving season here seems to.
- 1:00:08I'm you know, there may be a sunny day here and there, but at
- 1:00:11least last weekend was not conducive for going for drives.
- 1:00:13So it is. What's the name of the event?
- 1:00:17Because there's a band playing, isn't there Quite a cool band?
- 1:00:21They have bands like throughout the event, so it's called
- 1:00:24Destination Defender Nice, and it's put on by a Jaguar Land
- 1:00:27Rover as a celebration of the Defender.
- 1:00:31What is interesting is they're slowly wearing you down to buy
- 1:00:33one. Maybe not even not Even so
- 1:00:37slowly. Yeah, it's like eventually we
- 1:00:41keep invited her into these events.
- 1:00:42She'll buy one, I'm sure. She will.
- 1:00:43Yeah. Like it's a matter of time,
- 1:00:45trust me. Well, have fun, that'll be
- 1:00:47great. Thanks.
- 1:00:48Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it.
- 1:00:50Yeah, it's a car that like you see on the road and you kind of
- 1:00:53want it and you, it's just, they're just beautiful and like,
- 1:00:56go anywhere. They really are well, and it's
- 1:00:58kind of like, Brian, you were talking about A1 car solution.
- 1:01:01I think, you know, obviously no car does everything, but I love
- 1:01:07people talk, you know, people that drive at the racetrack.
- 1:01:10There's a lot of talk about like if you can drive your car from
- 1:01:14home to the track, drive it on the track and then drive it
- 1:01:16home. There's a certain like, and
- 1:01:20maybe it's just personal, but it's like you feel a little bit
- 1:01:22triumphant of like look at how capable this car is.
- 1:01:26And it's, you know, it's capable on the track and it's fun to
- 1:01:28drive. And I can also drive it on the
- 1:01:31street. And I feel like the Defender is
- 1:01:34a bit of that for off roading because they're so nicely
- 1:01:38appointed. They have all the features and,
- 1:01:40you know, bells and whistles you could want.
- 1:01:41They're comfortable, obviously great visibility because of the
- 1:01:44height. So you can drive them to the
- 1:01:46trailhead, tear up the trails and then drive them home in
- 1:01:49comfort. And I feel like that's not all
- 1:01:52cars can do that. And that's one of my favorite
- 1:01:54parts about them, especially because they are so capable off
- 1:01:57road too. So yeah.
- 1:01:59Big fans of Land Rovers here on that car show.
- 1:02:01Yeah, again, like Land Rover. Like Land Rovers.
- 1:02:05Kudos to them because they're putting on a set of experiences
- 1:02:09which is very different to any other car company, right?
- 1:02:12You know, to have this kind of festival that's not really, it
- 1:02:16looks like Sarah Price will be there.
- 1:02:18So, Sarah, we work. With the well, because she's
- 1:02:22doing, she is driving one of the Land Rover sponsored defenders
- 1:02:26in the Dakar Rally. Yeah, very good.
- 1:02:30Well, enjoy, enjoy. Looking forward to hearing
- 1:02:33reports back. I will bring all the stories.
- 1:02:37I think we're at a show, aren't we folks?
- 1:02:40Indeed, it's looking that way. Yeah, who wants to leave us with
- 1:02:43the phrase, the pace? Ryan's pointing, but I think we
- 1:02:48may all be. It's like Zoom where?
- 1:02:50He's not pointing at me, is he? There's only one person who does
- 1:02:53this right? It's.
- 1:02:54Great. Turned it into an art.
- 1:02:56Yeah. Well, thank you both.
- 1:03:00Yes, well, thank you so much for joining us.
- 1:03:02We're that car show. And remember, always be driving
- 1:03:05and we'll see you next week.
